The Allora & Calzadilla: KLIMA exhibition, a seven-month project that has drawn over 40.000 visitors, will come to a close on January 6th, 2025. The exhibition displays the recent work carried out by Jennifer Allora and Guillermo Calzadilla, leading figures of international contemporary art.
KLIMA highlights both the interdisciplinary and collaborative nature of Allora & Calzadilla’s practice, and the themes that run throughout their oeuvre: geological time and the evolutionary history of life on Earth, the postcolonial condition, environmental justice, climate debt, geopolitics and energy resources.
It also showcases the creation of the artists´ performancebased sculpture works, such as Entelechy (2020) and Lifespan (2014), which have been regularly staged throughout the course of the exhibition in collaboration with local musicians. On the occasion of the closing, these performances will take place in the Exhibition Hall on January 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 6th.
Additionally, The Great Silence (2014), the audio-visual work focused on the world´s largest single-aperture radio telescope, which has been part of the exhibition, will be screened on January 6th in the Auditorium.

ALLORA & CALZADILLA
Jennifer Allora and Guillermo Calzadilla have developed an experimental work that combines sculpture, performance, video, audio and photography. Based on a complex practice oriented towards research, the couple, based in Puerto Rico, critically treats the intersections and complicities between cultural, historical and geopolitical fact.
His work has been exhibited, among others, at the Museum of Modern Art in New York; the Neue Nationalgalerie in Berlin, the Tate Modern in London, the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao or the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam.
In 2011 they represented the United States of America at the 54th Venice Biennale International Art Exhibition.

Ixone Sádaba
Escala 1:1
Curator: Carles Guerra
Azkuna Zentroa kicks off its 2025 exhibition programme with Escala 1:1, a project by artist Ixone Sádaba.
Escala 1:1 is the product of the photographic research conducted by Ixone Sádaba (Bilbao, 1977) regarding the material, symbolic, and political legacy of the Lemoiz nuclear power plant. The remains of this facility which never became operational are marked by relentless and programmed decay. On the brink of disappearance, this concrete monolith encapsulates all the layers of its history and the potential future that its fragile state still allows us to envision.
Access to the area surrounding the plant remains restricted, as the legacy of a history defined by violence and civil unrest. Curated by Carles Guerra, this artistic project invites audiences to imagine new policies that would transform the plant into a focal point for a presentday public debate about memory.
Ixone Sádaba approaches this restitution exercise by screening life-sized fragments of the structures at the Lemoiz facility, recreating the complex with presumably unmediated views. By recreating the plant on a 1:1 scale inside the Alhóndiga, the project challenges the incomprehensibility of this immense space, albeit at the expense of a fragmented and incomplete presentation.
IXONE SÁDABA
(Bilbao, 1977) An artist and researcher, Ixone Sádaba earned a degree in Fine Arts from the University of the Basque Country and completed coursework in the Postgraduate Program at the International Center of Photography in New York. She currently lives and works in London.
With over 20 years of experience in the art world, has exhibited at major venues including the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao, the Reina Sofía National Art Museum in Madrid, the MoCCa Contemporary Art Museum in Toronto and the Contemporary Arts Center in New Orleans.
CARLES GUERRA
(Amposta, 1965) An art critic, professor, and researcher, Carles Guerra has held the post of Director at the Primavera Fotogràfica de Catalunya, Director at La Virreina Centre de la Imatge, Chief Curator at the Museu d'Art Contemporani de Barcelona (MACBA) and, from 2015 to 2020, Director at the Fundació Antoni Tàpies.
In addition to an extensive list of monographic exhibitions, he has curated projects such as 1979. Un monumento a instantes radicales and Antoni Tàpies. Biografía política y Tosquelles. Como una máquina de coser en un campo de trigo.

Ur Aitzak
Ur Aitzak, the sculpture set created over the last two years by artist Elena Aitzkoa as Azkuna Zentroa Associated Artist, is displayed in the Atrium.
During this time, the Atrium has been both her workshop and exhibition space, and has formed part of the dayto-day life of the Centre and of the people who make their way around it. Elena Aitzkoa has shared with them the details of the process, the techniques used and the poems that accompany each of the pieces.
Ciénaga estrellada, Arrebol, Luz cauce, Horizonte nuca, Cisne and Sombra clara have grown organically until they have generated an archipelago of forms that are now part of the Atrium of Cultures of the Alhóndiga.

Leticia Paschetta Foggy Playscapes
Artist and architect Leticia Paschetta is presenting a new proposal of her “ludic landscapes” at the Mediateka Gallery, a work based on spatial experiences that merge art, design and structural innovation.
Foggy Playscapes consists of hanging textile spaces into which bodies sink and rise at the same time in an indeterminate, changing, ludic and free movement.
“Fog and mist are fascinating concepts that have inspired artists throughout history. These notions have served to explore the nature of reality, memory, and perception, symbolising mystery, emotional states, uncertainty and identity. The boundaries between fantasy and reality blur to create an ambiguous and complex space where anything we are able to envisage is completed by our imagination”, as explained by Leticia Paschetta.
From this stage, she invites the audience to “play within the Ludic Space of FOG, between the unclear and the blurred, with whatever is sensed, appears, hides, is discovered, and surprises us.”

Abel Jaramillo
Ninguna noche en llamas
Abel Jaramillo concludes his residency at Azkuna Zentroa within the framework of Babestu, the Centre´s Creation Support Programme, with an exhibition of his work Ninguna noche en llamas.
It is a multidisciplinary project that takes moving images and the written word as its starting point to undertake storytelling, the narrative mechanisms of the story, the concept of transformation through language, and images that cross over and echo through different times.
Based on a series of stories that converse with fire, the artist works on a “modular film” that reflects on seeing and listening, the connections between places and times, and the narrative potential of fiction.

A visual artist whose work revolves around the cracks and margins of a story, narrations and poetry linked to specific contexts and political tensions projected in our day-to-day. His work tackles the construction of a story from the foundations, the production of fictions from historical events and the relationship between stories, territories, margins, and outskirts.

Ixiar Rozas
Erritmoen segida
Writer and researcher-in-residence at Azkuna Zentroa, Ixiar Rozas, works with voice and language, and their sounds. During her residency at the Centre, she is working on A Series of Rhythms, a continuum of prior zones. As part of this research, she will read Narrugorrik in its entirety over three evenings.
“Narrugorrik is a long-form book set to be published in 2025. It is composed of short texts, poems, and materials that have emerged from listening, from rhythm, from a way of breathing and energy. Reading it aloud while still in progress allows it to reach other listeners, other bodies, who hear the rhythm as it unfolds. And in so doing, uphold the writing” as explained by the author.

Dejabu Konpainia
Itzulera
Itzulera, Dejabu Company’s new stage project, is a theatre piece full of humour, poetry and action. It is also a self-fiction work, where the company members question the meaning of their creativity and identity. The company narrates their trip to Mexico in 2024 and how an unexpected incident changed the course of their adventure.
This work is structured like a live Road movie constantly playing around reality and fiction. In addition to stage actors, a filmmaker creates and projects live images, turning each performance into a once-in-a-lifetime experience. A story where the limits between what is represented and what is experienced become blurred, inviting the audience to join them on that journey and its outcome.
Dejabu delves into new stage narratives and devices enabling the audience to experience live arts in a different way.

Caspervek
Buster Keaton´s Sherlock Jr. (“El moderno Sherlock Holmes”)
Caspervek premiered their soundtrack for the film Buster Keaton's Sherlock Jr. in 2016, for a trio comprising violin, percussion and piano. In 2024, on the occasion of their performance during the Teatro Real season in Madrid, the composer Brais González modified the score adding new instruments as well as new musical sections to the work. This resulted in a work for flute, clarinet, trombone, percussion and piano, which explores the synchronic elements of Buster Keaton’s physical comedy.
Following last season’s success, the Galician ensemble returns to Azkuna Zentroa with a soundtrack in line with their usual approach of composing comedies by alternating swing and classical jazz, while also adding a few twists of the screw to the music style of detective films.

El Callejón del Gato, a leading performing arts company for children and young audiences, known for its commitment to innovative theatrical languages, presents a performance featuring puppets, objects and screenings. This performance shows that, no matter how different other cultures or individuals may seem, what brings us together is always stronger than what keeps us apart. We simply need to be guided by curiosity rather than prejudice.

Progreso. El último lugar sobre la tierra
An Antarctic iceberg sheds its final piece of ice and vanishes forever. A previously unseen gull soars over Greenland. In Nepal, a fast-food multinational drops 10,000 leaflets over the Himalayas. A plastic bottle washes up on the shores of an island in the Moluccan Sea. On the other side of the world, at the antipodes, an unknown tribe is uprooted. Progress has arrived.
The latest work by playwright Olatz Gorrotxategi is a studio piece that combines object theatre, audiovisuals, sound fiction, and theatrical text as performative languages to explore the universe and our place within it.
This performative work of Documentary Theatre is not a children's show, but rather a production designed to entertain and engage audiences aged 10 and above.

Her specialisation in ecosystems and population dynamics is the foundation of her work. Pupa, pupa, pupila. Masaje de la visión is part of her line of individual performances such as massages and other devices, based on body perception or what she calls “Dance movement 0”.
Masaje de la visión is a play in the form of a massage. An individual experience, an artistic "one-on-one” which reminds us that we continue to see in our dreams. A person who has reserved this time, someone who welcomes you and invites you to lie down on the massage table, to close your eyes and leave them behind, a touch always mediated by objects. Cinema-Literature Event: El amor de Feliz final a Nosotros
On Wednesday, 19 February, Azkuna Zentroa will host the advance screening of the film Nosotros, adapted from the novel Feliz final.
As part of this presentation, the Gutun Zuria Zabalik cinemaliterature event titled El amor de Feliz final a Nosotros will feature the participation of the director of the film, Helena Taberna, and the author of the novel, Isaac Rosa.
Nosotros reconstructs a great love story, starting from the end: Ángela and Antonio are a couple like so many others who fell in love, experienced joy, had children, fought to persevere, and stumbled many times.
“When I read Feliz final by Isaac Rosa, I felt deeply connected to this beautiful novel," says Helena Taberna. "I was aware of what a significant challenge it would be to make a film from such a complex novel, but that didn’t deter my desire to bring Ángela and Antonio’s story of love and heartbreak to life on screen.”
Isaac Rosa highlights the “radical and deeply personal way Helena constructs the story, rearranging and reordering time, exploring the visual and sound possibilities with sensitivity, to create a film unlike any other.”

These films are essential viewing more because of their impact on the history of cinema than the significance of their directors.
With this principle in mind, the second chapter of Classique = Moderne. A New History of the Zinemateka, offers us the opportunity to watch 12 masterpieces of cinematic production.

Artistic Residencies
Promote, Support, Share
Artistic creation thrives in spaces where experimentation, reflection, and dialogue with other ideas can flourish. This is the driving force behind Azkuna Zentroa's artistic residencies, designed as dynamic laboratories for mid-career artists. These residencies offer a supportive and collaborative environment, fostering mutual growth and exchange while respecting the unique rhythms of the creative process. The programme is thoughtfully structured to encompass every aspect of artistic creation including research, development, technical innovation, and a bold commitment to multidisciplinary approaches.
These initiatives serve as a means of connecting the local creative network with the international cultural scene within the Centre and around the city. Each project aligns with the Centre's programming and always includes a public-facing component, be it showcasing the finished work or sharing the creative process behind it.
The methodology, based on a preliminary approach, a process, and a production across diverse formats, facilitates the creation of creative material that broadens Azkuna Zentroa’s perspective on
Azkuna Zentroa - Alhóndiga Bilbao’s Artistic Residencies Programme is supported by the Etxepare Basque Institute
Society and Contemporary Culture, and contributes to the valuable body of work of the Centre expressed in films, exhibitions, podcasts, stage performances, and books.
2025: New Artistic Residencies
Each year, the Babestu. Creation Support Programme launches a call for proposals. This programme invites mid-career artists to submit projects and research that offer insights into the new artistic narratives. Of the 86 artists and collectives who submitted applications in the latest edition, Beatriz Sánchez, Estibaliz Sádaba Murguía, Inés García, and Ivonne Villamil were selected to conduct their research and develop their projects over the next year. At the same time, filmmaker Silvia Zayas and the Tripak theatre company were chosen from among the 56 submissions received in response to the latest call from Lanean, which supports performance-based projects.
These artists join the vibrant creative community at Azkuna Zentroa, which has welcomed and supported over a hundred artists in the past five years, fostering a space for artistic development and sharing.
The Collective Residents program in Azkuna Zentroa has the support of Urbegi.

ACuTe. Culture Testbeds for Performing Arts and New Technology - 2025
Ziomara Hormaetxe
LĀTTICE (provisional title)
The Basque choreographer Ziomara Hormaetxe will be completing the creation of L TTICE (provisional title) during this term. This new performative piece in motion, produced by Azkuna Zentroa, is part of the European project ACuTe. Culture Testbeds for Performing Arts and New Technology, in which the Centre is a strategic partner with the support of Creative Europe. European Commission.
Through an ongoing dialogue between body and technology, "this piece explores gravity as an omnipresent force that permeates the body in multiple layers: from the physical to the quantum, thus shaping the ways in which we experience space and movement," states the creator. The piece suggests "a journey through virtual spaces and multiverses, where each layer of reality unveils new possibilities for existence and connection, thereby broadening the ways in which contemporary collaborative narratives reshape our understanding of reality," explains Ziomara Hormaetxe.
L TTICE will be premiered on May as part of eszenAZ, the Live Arts Season at Azkuna Zentroa.
Babestu. Creation Support Programme - 2025
Beatriz Sánchez
Fórmulas de Cinética Doméstica [3]
Audiovisual creation and digital art are at the centre of Beatriz Sánchez's career. Her artistic practice blends traditional media such as drawing and sculpture with video, digital tools, and live performances.
In 2025, Sánchez will begin her residency at Azkuna Zentroa as part of the Babestu programme with Fórmulas de Cinética Doméstica [3], a project that keeps the focus on animation and the moving image whilst also returning to hands-on work, giving free rein to her imagination.
With Fórmulas de Cinética Doméstica [3], the artist envisions transforming her workspace into an experimental research lab where she will develop a series of mechanised sculptural artifacts. “These moving parts consist of engines, mini video projections, everyday objects, and figures, combining to form dynamic assemblies that seem to come to life (automatons)”, explains the artist. They are “lowtech, decadent, and poetic artifacts that precariously balance various fragile elements in an awkward mechanical dance.”

Estibaliz Sádaba Murguía
RUINAS (cuaderno de notas experimental)
Through her work, Estibaliz Sádaba Murguía aims to create a space for reflection and debate to facilitate an artistic and feminist exploration of the context in which we live.
In recent years she has focused her work on the relationship between women´s bodies and the inhabited space, examining how these two elements interact in both public and private environments, placing a particular emphasis on gender perspective.
During her Babestu residency, she will be developing RUINAS (cuaderno de notas experimental), a work that will include a set of texts, sounds and performances. To this end, the artist draws on the writing of poetic experimental texts and manifestos in the first person as a starting point, which will subsequently be developed through the aforementioned sound, graphic and performative resources. “These texts, along with their derivative products, aim to highlight the work that women have carried out within the domestic sphere, and reveal their discomfort (Friedan)”, as explained by Estibaliz Sádaba.

Inés García
El tacto del contacto
Sight, sound, and touch traverse the installations, sculptures, and recent experimental films of artist and filmmaker Inés García . Her latest project, El tacto del contacto, explores the development of cinematic language and its arrangement within the exhibition space.
The work, which began in 2024, captures the creative processes behind handmade objects such as a wooden bowling pin, a spherical cake, and lace embroidery. Her first “projection booth,” developed in collaboration with architect Diego Sologuren, will be expanded and solidified in 2025 during her residency at Azkuna Zentroa as part of the Babestu programme.
In El tacto del contacto the artist immerses herself with her analogue camera in “the art of working with the hands, where repetitive, rhythmic movements reveal a silent dialogue with time and material”. She conceives the editing of images “from a state in which a firm gaze attempts to understand the encounter with the image as though it were a tactile experience, an editing process that can be seen and heard as much as it is touched”. The ultimate goal is to create a new "projection booth" specifically designed for viewing one of the film pieces.

Ivonne Villamil Meteoro
Ivonne Villamil, a visual and sound artist, works at the intersection of art and science using accessible practices and technologies that focus on listening devices and methods. Her work explores the intimate connections between matter, memory, and territory, drawing from geophony, or the sounds of the earth.
Meteoro, a project she is developing as a resident of the Babestu programme, arises from the urgent need for social and cultural action and reflection on climate change.
“I aim to work collaboratively in the realms of sound and visual art, using listening methods and devices to capture atmospheric phenomena on earth and in the cosmos, employing open-source software, DIY methods, and low-tech field recording”, the artist explains. The goal is “to provoke immersive, experiential situations, encounters, and spaces that bridge art and science, connected to earth and cosmic sciences (meteorology, space weather, astrophysics)”.

Lanean Residency 2025. Support for Stage Processes
Silvia Zayas
Material girls
Artist Silvia Zayas will launch her new project, Material Girls, in 2025, as part of the “Lanean. Stage Processes Support Programme”.
According to the author, her work “draws on the autobiographical to explore the collective trauma inherited by a second generation of young girls. They are the daughters/nieces of ex-combatants (conscripted by the Portuguese regime) who recently returned from Guinea-Bissau and other former colonies after the war for independence from Portugal. The story is re-imagined through childhood memories filled with silences, syncretisms, and ghosts”.
The project will take the form of a “live piece developed through collective experiences with ex-combatants and women of my generation from various suburban and domestic settings in Porto. It will combine elements from childhood imagination, without hierarchies between elements”.
During her residency at Azkuna Zentroa, she plans to develop the formal and choreographic aspects of the project using live cinema devices, and share experimental bodily practices to generate mental imagery.
Tripak ENCOUNTERS
Two years after the premiere of Platea, Tripak has started outlining ENCOUNTERS (tentative title), their new stage project. Part of their creative process will take place in 2025 at Azkuna Zentroa within the framework of the Lanean programme, which supports live arts creation.
According to the Basque performing arts company, ENCOUNTERS "explores 'abandoned' spaces where we find overlooked human traces that, though grey, reveal a wildness. (...) The space we inhabit is an open interior where mundane, unremarkable objects lose their purpose in the open air, becoming discarded items that decorate the bedroom of an unknown host who welcomes us into its intimacy without ever looking at us”.
The residency at Azkuna Zentroa marks a starting point for this new project, where the team conjure up an envisioned place. “From there, we invent the remaining elements of the work - materials that gradually come together to create the scene, like a painting in motion,” they explain. #stage #theatre #newlanguages
Azkuna Zentroa Associated Researchers2024-2025
A programme aimed at supporting and fostering the analysis and production related to current creation, that favours the exchange between artistic communities, audiences and other professionals.
Rosa Casado
A multidiscipline artist and researcher, Rosa Casado’s work focuses on questions related to performance and critical spatial practice. In 2025 she is developing the sound and performative piece Here Be Dragons as part of La ilusoria estabilidad del suelo, a project undertaken in her role as an Associate Researcher at Azkuna Zentroa. Through this work, she explores which elements fade away, become blurred, or emerge when the terrestrial is considered from the perspective of the aqueous bodies covering the planet.
Here Be Dragons is an attempt to map the planet’s twilight areas. Above sea level, twilight refers to the space and time when the world sways between night and day. Whereas below sea level, twilight refers to the ocean’s intermediate area where little sunlight penetrates, a dark, cold, high pressure environment that is unimaginably vast, barely known, relatively unexplored and highly vulnerable, where the planet’s largest migration travels its waters daily in an immense wave of life.

Ixiar Rozas
Una serie de ritmos
As a writer and researcher, Ixiar Rozas works with voice, language and sounds. Her research is a continuum of previous spaces.
To listen to Una serie de ritmos and, right there, to hold the writing. That material contains a rhythmic breathing, a source of energy. And new fermentations will emerge from those compositions. There are ancient words that we use in Basque to denote nudity. And there are words, perhaps on the verge of disappearing, with their own phonetic variants and phonemes which can be heard echoing through the valleys. These materials will be deployed at Azkuna Zentroa to work with other artists and to continue sharing.
Artistic creation support programme that accompanies artists whose works represent an inspiring look at artistic languages.
Ça Marche
Ça Marche is a performing arts company founded in 2015 and based in Barcelona Its creative projects reflect on the dialogue between theatre, performance, movement and visual arts.
In their research as Associated Artists at Azkuna Zentroa they have worked on Incendis, a stage-installation setup that deals with historical, emotional, documentary and artistic aspects regarding fire and blazes.
They are likewise developing the Trabajos forzados stage project, which will be presented at Prototipoak Bilbao, the International Biennial of New Artistic Forms at Azkuna Zentroa. The piece questions the dynamics of language and its relationship with the body based on the idea of silence, both elected and imposed.

Idoia Zabaleta
Idoia Zabaleta (Vitoria, 1970) is a choreographer and biologist. Her research and production proposal entitled Zintza Lilura consists of the development of a device in relation to the bodily axis, holding fast, and balance, in which kinetic art, bodily health, and kinesiological tuning all converge. During the creation stage, she will work with artists from the Basque context, and the device will be tested with personnel from the Centre. The project concludes with the unveiling and testing by the community of different audiences at Azkuna Zentroa.
As part of this process, the work Pupa, pupita, pupila. Masaje de la vision will be presented in March at the Auditorium. This work is part of her line of individual performances such as massages and other devices, based on body perception or what she calls “Dance movement 0”. Further information on page 24.
