Azkuna Zentroa performing arts season 2020-2021

More than twenty two projects make up this new performing arts season, where local production stands out with two international premieres, two pieces produced within the framework of the Centre’s artistic creation accompaniment programme, along with pieces that were pending last spring. The programme starts in October with the premiere of Loser, by the Osa + Mujika company, created during the 2019 Contemporary Dance Residency at Azkuna Zentroa and at Dansateliers Rotterdam, through the collaboration and exchange agreement with the Dutch contemporary dance creation and exhibition Centre. It continues in November with the stage project by the choreographer Iker Gómez, Un día Cisne en el Teatro, where the Nowhere Theater company promotes social values and coexistence through dance. In December, works aimed at family audiences predominate, starting with the international piece W.A.M. - We are Monchichi, by Wang-Ramirez Company, within the framework of Dantzaldia, La Fundición dance programme. A production that uses humor to discuss multiple identities and the way in which they are modified by other people. This is followed by the artist Janet Novás and the composer Mercedes Peón, and their work, Mercedes máis eu, as a result of the exploration of both artists into the particular relationships that exist and that are established between ‘their dance and their music’. December ends the year with two works aimed at family audiences. The company El Conde Torrefiel presents the premier in the Basque Country of Los protagonistas,

and artist Macarena Recuerda Shepherd stages ¡AY!¡YA!. In the first act, the audience is immersed in a visual universe in which word, image and dance merge through different dramaturgical routes; in the second, it plays with excitement and the gaze. It is an exercise on the image that each person has of themselves and how it transforms. The new year begins with On Goldberg Variations / Variations, by the Mal Pelo company, a piece arranged as part of the public programme of Steve Paxton Drafting Interior Techniques exhibition, which had to be postponed. After the versions by Jurij Konjar and Ion Munduate around JS Bach’s Goldberg Variations, in this third performance the choreographic proposal showcases the particular musicality of each performer and the rhythmic and dynamic dialogue between the group and the space. Amalia Fernández inhabits the three Azkuna Zentroa buildings between January and February to create, within the framework of her Expografía Retrospectiva project, various itineraries through the performative installations that go over her career. It is a site specific piece aimed at revisiting past works and rediscovering them.

The performing arts season concludes with Prototipoak. International Meeting of New Artistic Forms that is held as a biennial, and that brings new artistic formats to the communities of audiences through projects that address everyday aspects. Hotsetan. Azkuna Zentroa’s experimental music and sound art programme Experimental sound artists and performers present their work as part of Hotsetan, Azkuna Zentroa’s experimental music and sound art programme, which showcases local artists who work with experimental sound and music, through concerts. Groups and artists taking part in the programme include: raeran, Myriam RZM, Matías Riquelme & Fernando Ulzión, Mudoh, Jana Jan, EC (Estanis Comella), Killerkume, Radithor and Testura.

In April we present the premiere of Makers, by AZ Associated Artist Oscar Gómez Mata, in collaboration with actor Juan Loriente. It is a work about light, time and love, traveling between comic overflow and emotional containment, between nonsense and truth. The MDV danza company by Mikel del Valle presents in June the piece Arquitectos del aire, with an ad hoc piece for the building, through three visions of contemporary dance revolving around movement understood as an architectural language.

Osa + Mujika arose from the artistic meeting of Jaiotz Osa and Xabier Mujika, which combines two creative worlds such as dance and scenography/wardrobe. Their work Loser is a reflection on the millennials, their social relationships, dependence on networks and society’s expectations. «I was always being told I was special. I also got told that I’d have everything I wanted in life, just because I wanted it. I crashed into the real world and immediately realised I was neither special nor would I have everything I wished for just because I wanted it. The need to show a problem free and perfect life, coupled with the need to accept a world which isn’t real in search of the path to cover the infinite emptiness, is what we the Millennials feel, as a criticised generation that hides the profound truth, namely, dissatisfaction». Through a very physical choreographic language, always starting with the body, Osa + Mujika explores new forms of expression, taking enormous care with the dramatics in addition to the movement and choreography. According to the artists, «the aim of this piece is to present a bona fide millennial, with all his/her characteristics. This character will fight for his/her dreams and aims, while at the same time it will experience great frustration and rage. The changes in these inner turmoils of the character will be reflected in the difference scenes of this piece. Thus, while some are filled with positivity and euphoria, in others failure is the protagonist».

The two make a team whose aim is to tell visual stories. The purpose is to create all these images running around in their heads, giving them shape and sense, and carry them out as both movement and in audiovisual format.

10 | eszenAZ. Azkuna Zentroa performing arts season 2020-2021

The Basque choreographer Iker Gómez presents Un día Cisne en el Teatro (A Swan Day at the Theatre), a stage performance that promotes social values and coexistence through dance. This piece is part of the ‘Proyecto Cisne’ (‘Swan Project’), an innovative concept that uses new technologies as a pedagogical tool to connect with different audiences. The project, developed by the company Nowhere Theater | Cía. de Danza Iker Gómez along with a group of specialised teachers, has three parts: a dance and creativity workshop aimed at a school-aged audience, a choreographic exhibition, and the presentation of an online Web 2.0 educational tool that aims to give visibility and bring dance to all audiences.

ARTISTIC SHEET Original idea and choreography: Iker Gómez Dancers: Rubén Cobas & Xana Llaneza Technician: David Sánchez Web 2.0 design: Digital Video Dance Art danza.ikergomez.es

The format of Un día Cisne en el Teatro is a workshopperformance combination divided into three parts with the participation of different audiences. The first part is the project’s web 2.0 site, which offers free access to the contents and interactive games about dance. The second part consists of practicing movement and choreographic memory as a starting point to develop creativity through dance. In this part, the artist invites participants to learn a specific choreography as an introduction to the concept of choreographic memory. And the third part consists of a stage performance of Un día Cisne en el Teatro, accompanied by a discussion between the audience, the performers of the piece and the choreographer. An innovative and educational performance adapted to our times.

Nowhere Theater | Cía. de Danza Iker Gómez. Since it was founded in 2007 by the Basque choreographer Iker Gómez, the company has created a total of six full-length stage productions. Three of the productions were selected for the National Dance Circuit of the Alternative Theatre NETWORK, positioning the company as one of the most relevant on the modern theatre scene. The company has participated in a variety of important festivals such as Temporada Alta, Festival BAD, MOV-s, Festival LOLA or Festival EN-tránsito in countries such as France, Italy, Mexico, Serbia, Brazil, Russia, Bulgaria and Greece. For the last five years, the company has focused on creating projects for visualising and approaching dance, and disseminating the wealth of knowledge that can be generated through it.

Shihiya Peng was born in Taiwan but lives in Paris. Marco di Nardo was born in Naples and lives in Berlin. How can we be together if everything makes us be far apart? How can we perceive the other when we are surrounded by walls? What language must we choose? How can we react to the mountain of cultural stereotypes? What is this dance of links and connections, of fissures and fusions? It is the dance of the cat and the mouse, a dance that explores antagonistic forces. Here, the bodies flirt with the irony, with the desire to be happy, with melancholy … Shihya Peng and Marco di Nardo transform themselves into two distorted mirrors, gradually revealing more than we had expected… They move one another, they fly, fall and become mutually exasperated. Then they get up and walk together… W.A.M. is a fable, a secret story, a universal, panoramic dance performed in sequences and accompanied by flashes of text by Fabrice Melquiot (who also collaborated in the play-writing). With each movement, with each jump and each chase, the dancers search their childhood memories for the country where they can live together, or live with others. A dance of combat to find harmony. Dantzaldia, the International Dance Festival organised by La Fundición, presents this performance at Azkuna Zentroa which is suitable for all audiences and has been seen by audiences all over the world. Honji Wang. German-Korean dancer, choreographer and artistic director. Is recognized as an artist who brings contemporary and hip hop together in an exceptionally organic fashion. Wang’s first collaboration with Sébastien Ramirez was in 2010. Soon after she became Co-artistic Director of Company Wang Ramirez and ever since the duo has been creating larger scale works that established them in the contemporary dance scene. Sébastien Ramirez. French-Spanish dancer, choreographer and artistic director. He specializes in the use of aerial work as well as choreographic rigging development. In 2007 he founded his company in Perpignan. He shares the Company’s Artistic Direction with Honji Wang and has collected several awards. Ramirez was appointed Associate Artist at L’Archipel, National Theater of Perpignan in 2014 and at Théâtre de la Ville in Paris in 2018.

MERCEDES MÁIS EU IS THE RESULT OF BOTH ARTISTS’ EXPLORATION OF THE SPECIAL RELATIONSHIPS THAT EXIST AND ARE CREATED BETWEEN «THEIR DANCE AND THEIR MUSIC».

The artist Janet Novás and the composer Mercedes Peón collaborate in this subtle stage performance about common sensibility. Together they explore the special relationships that exist and are created between «their dance and their music». From instruments, memories, songs and dances, concepts emerge in different states of latency. Some of them, with a pronounced socio-political content, are present in the materials, from the musical ‘objects’ to the biographical ones or the dances; others, somatic concepts or quantum experiences, appear in the pulses, the rhythms and the tones, in the voices and the dynamics, in the silences and in the forms. Mercedes máis eu looks at the collective but it does so from non-archetypal perspectives and sensitivities. The piece, in its feminine form, is a hybrid of music and dance replete with evocative images and sectioned by paintings, which allows it to inhabit different architectures or frames ranging from more scenic contexts to more museum-like ones. According to the creators, «to define Mercedes máis eu one must inevitably speak of desire. That desire that finds reasons to continue beyond the first encounter and turn into a renewed encounter, conversation, experience, affection... To persist in that desire, which is updated throughout the project, is to influence what happens to us at each encounter. But it also means investigating what is our own and what is common to us, what is beyond the subject and the territory. That living memory or archive that is updated with desire, removing us from our own immanence».

Janet Novás. Dancer, performer, choreographer and teacher. Trained in contemporary dance in Madrid, Brussels and Berlin, her work is the product of her own observation, experience and dialogue that uses her own body as her work implement, committed to a language of her own, shaping the emotional content and aesthetic simplicity that characterises her work. She currently collaborates with different artists such as Pablo Esbert, Mercedes Peón and the designers Zap&Buj, with whom she created her latest work I imagined five bodies and none of them were mine. Mercedes Peón. Galician composer, vocalist and instrumentalist, she works with traditional music using multiple technological tools. After studying Galician tradition for 25 years, in 2000 Peón recorded her first solo album, Isué. That was followed by Ajrú (2003), Sihá (2007), Sós (2011), and Deixaas (2018). She has received several awards for her work and is considered one of the most outstanding Galician artists of the early 21st century.

THE PLASTIC LANGUAGE OF EL CONDE DE TORREFIEL LEADS THE PUBLIC TO A VISUAL UNIVERSE WHERE WORD, IMAGE AND DANCE MERGE TOGETHER.

16 | eszenAZ. Azkuna Zentroa performing arts season 2020-2021

El Conde de Torrefiel, the artistic project headed by Pablo Gisbert and Tanya Beyeler, presents its first proposal for children and families, Los protagonistas (The protagonists). Framed in a visual universe in which word, image and dance merge, this new creation is a journey through a scenography, guided by a text in audio format, hoping to conquer the smallest sensibilities from the elements and uses with which their world is configured today. The plastic language and the audio environment lead the exploring public to discover themselves as protagonists of this other world, designed to live a journey where the perception of one’s own body and the image of each person become a game. In this sense, Los protagonistas offers an unpretentious aesthetic experience, without intentionality or doctrines. This new work focuses on the value of imagination and complicity. The perceptual experience of the body itself in relation to the different installations, stands out by means of a scenic journey through fantastic environments, where the perception of each person is adulterated by the space surrounding it. The journey through the innards of this impossible world calls, as in an analog video game, for each person to participate and rely upon the small group of which they will form part. Like an expedition of explorers in search for a hidden and prodigious place, they will have at their disposal only a few tools and their capacity for imagination within a scenographic labyrinth.

El Conde de Torrefiel. Artistic project directed by Pablo Gisbert & Tanya Beyeler. Its scenic pieces have a visual and textual aesthetic that results from an oscillation between literature, plastic arts and choreography. The company configures its pieces in the manner of an extensive ‘Essay of the Present’ that is divided into several installments. These are proposals that work the stage from an immediate temporality, formulating hypotheses that respond to the unknowns presented by the XXI century and the ways of representing them on stage

Macarena Recuerda Shepherd presents ¡AY! ¡YA! , a dance performance designed for family audiences. An illusion that leads to perceiving reality in different ways suggested by the imagination or caused by the deception of the sense of sight. ¡AY! ¡YA! is an exercise on the gaze. That illusion that occurs when the image that each person has of themselves is transformed into another, multiplies or takes on impossible forms. Bodies with various limbs, incomplete, transformable and moldable. As the artist explains, «the illusion is an effect that shows that our eyes are not video cameras that record everything that happens, but rather that our brain interprets and reworks the information that our senses provide us».

THIS CHOREOGRAPHIC PROPOSAL IS COMMITTED TO EACH INTERPRETER’S SPECIFIC MUSICALITY, AND TO THE RHYTHMICAL DYNAMIC DIALOGUE BETWEEN THE GROUP AND THE SPACE.

20 | eszenAZ. Azkuna Zentroa performing arts season 2020-2021

The Catalan dance company Mal Pelo has been researching and creating its own language for 30 years. Its personal relationship with the work of German composer Johann S. Bach began with BACH, a show which toured the world in 2004. As a first step in a deep and complete immersion process, Bach Project is a trilogy focused on the study of J.S. Bach’s music and its relation to choreographic writing. On Goldberg Variations / Variations is a show based on the Goldberg Variations / Variations musical proposal of the French-American pianist and composer Dan Tepfer, who interprets the Goldberg Variations of J.S. Bach combined with his improvised variations on the same harmonies. On Goldberg Variations / Variations is a framework of language lines which weaves a fabric around the work of J.S. Bach. Dance, John Berger’s voice, some own texts, the manipulated multifocal sound of the soundtrack, live voice and video screenings, meld together to create Mal Pelo’s approximation to the universe of J.S. Bach. The choreographic proposal is committed to each interpreter’s specific musicality, and to the rhythmical dynamic dialogue between the group and the space.

With the artistic direction of María Muñoz and Pep Ramis, Mal Pelo is a creative nucleus characterised by shared authorship and a trajectory based on researching movement and its dialogue with other disciplines. Since 1989 it has developed its own artistic language through movement, word, video, sound space and a special vision of stage space. For 30 years, Mal Pelo has upheld its interest in working with writers like John Berger and Erri de Luca, and creators like Baró d’Evel, Andrés Corchero, Steve Noble, Lisa Nelson, Niño de Elche, John Edwards, Alia Sellami, François Delarozière, Eduard Fernández, Leonor Leal, Marta Izquierdo, Faustin Linyekula, Cesc Gelabert, Carlota Subirós, Àngels Margarit, Lilo Baur, Cristina Cervià, Núria Font, Joel Bardolet, Nuno Rebelo and Agustí Fernández, among others. It has been running the Centro de Creación L’animal a l’esquena, in Celrà, Girona since 2001.

DIFFERENT SPACES OF THE THREE BUILDINGS OF AZ BECOME A STAGE FOR EXPOGRAFÍA RETROSPECTIVA, WHERE SIX PERFORMERS WILL ACTIVATE SEVERAL WORKS IN MUSEUM INSTALLATION FORMAT, THROUGH WHICH THE PUBLIC WILL TRANSIT.

22 | eszenAZ. Azkuna Zentroa performing arts season 2020-2021

The project Expografía retrospectiva (Retrospective Expography) by Amalia Fernández is a series of objectsituations, brought to life by performers, whose content is, in an installation version, the retrospective of the artist’s performance pieces. Amalia Fernández has been reflecting for a long time through her already created pieces. The artist ‘resists in a certain sense the projective tendency that always goes forward in the production of new work to, instead, revisit materials worked on and see what is new in them’, according to Associate Researcher at Azkuna Zentroa Isabel de Naverán. It is a «going backwards’ that she had already explored before», she adds.

ARTISTIC SHEET Autoría y dirección: Amalia Fernández Intérpretes: Catherine Sardella, Nines Martin, Javier Cuevas, Maia Villot de Diego, Nazario Diaz y Amalia Fernández.

To perform this project, Amalia Fernández carried out a residency from January 22 to February 6, inhabiting the three buildings of Azkuna Zentroa full of corridors, hallways and numerous hidden corners, unknown to the public. Based on this residency and research in spaces, she decides which fragments from her previous pieces can be revisited in those places. This site-specific project is completely linked to the place where it takes place, «as a material and physical architecture, as a place of work and production of the work of art». Thus, in this seven-hour non-consecutive piece, the three buildings of Azkuna Zentroa become the key space for the work’s dramaturgy, where six performers will use these spaces to activate various works in museum installation format, for which the public will be able to wander (enter and exit) as if it were a huge museum.

Amalia Fernández (Granada, 1970) has lived in Madrid since 1998. Despite having learned from many people, she considers Monica her teacher. A Valencian with whom she worked for 11 years at Cía. El Bailadero. In 2005 she began to work alone in pieces such as Matrioshka, Kratimosha or En Construccion; El resistente y delicado hilo musical, and Expografía, among others; and also in collaboration with artists such as Shichimi Togarashi with Juan Dominguez or Perrita China with Nilo Gallego. Amalia Fernández is also dedicated to teaching, leading laboratories for artists as well as being an Iyengar yoga teacher.

Expografía reflects on the transposition of theater-museum codes, and specifically also reflects on what happens when the individual (the performer in this case) becomes an exhibition object.

«THE MAIL ROLE OF MAKERS IS TO INVESTIGATE IN ORDER TO MAKE LIGHT. WE ARE DETECTIVES, WE TRY TO DETECT THE FEELINGS HIDDEN UNDER THE FEELINGS AND FIND A POETIC SOLUTION TO REALITY.». ÓSCAR GÓMEZ MATA.

Oscar Gómez Mata, along with the actor Juan Loriente, presents Makers, the piece created during his residency at the Centre as an AZ Associated Artist. Makers is a work about light, time and love, that travels between comic overflow and emotional containment, between nonsense and truth.

With regard to the creative process for this piece, the creator differentiates between its more epic side, where theatre is «a form of espionage, of investigation to spy on the world», and its more intimate part, «trying to detect the feelings hidden under the feelings». Makers, according to Oscar Gómez Mata, creates protocols to spy on reality. «This work is a story of overlapping layers, where we strip away what we believe to be the truth to discover something that we did not expect to feel». In Makers «there is surprise and suspicion. The propitious attitude of the Makers is defined in the words of the philosopher Daniel Innerarity: ‘... reality is complex, and when someone approaches it in a binary way, we have the obligation to be suspicious’».

Oscar Gómez Mata. Actor, director, author and set designer, his work in the theatre began in Spain in 1987 when he co-founded Legaleón-T, a company with which he continued to create shows until 1996. In 1997 he founded in Geneva the company L’Alakran, acting as director, creator and playwright for various works. He has been a regular professor at Manufacture - the French Swiss School of Theatre - since 2013. (HETSR) Winner of the 2018 Swiss National Theatre Award.

Juan Loriente. An actor from Cantabria, he is best known as a theatre actor, appearing regularly in the works of Rodrigo García and La Carnicería Theatre. He has also appeared in films such as La espalda de Dios (Pablo Llorca) or Smoking Room (Cesc Gay).

THREE VISIONS OF CONTEMPORARY DANCE WHERE MOVEMENT IS UNDERSTOOD AS AN ARCHITECTURAL LANGUAGE.

26 | eszenAZ. Azkuna Zentroa performing arts season 2020-2021

Arquitectos del aire, by MDV danza, is the creation of a multidisciplinary team that works with movement and spatial occupation from three different viewpoints, those of its choreographers: Mario Bermúdez (Jaén), Pol Jiménez (Barcelona) and Mikel del Valle (Bilbao). These are three visions of contemporary dance where movement is understood as an architectural language. Dance is the movement of the body in space, and architecture organises and prioritises space through construction. Both are forms of occupying space, filling the air over time. Three industrial buildings converted into cultural spaces are the source of inspiration for this project. Each building is located in the choreographer’s place of origin: Naves del Barranco in Seville, CaixaForum in Barcelona and Azkuna Zentroa in Bilbao. Spatial occupation is a common substrate in architecture and dance. There is an underlying geometry to bodies and space. A corporeal mass, a membrane, as a covering material, which generates atmospheres during movement, reaching different structural corners of the void. A metaphor that perfectly reflects the appropriation of the bodies in the space they occupy and converts the dancer into a receptacle of different spatialities through the use of choreography. Three buildings and three choreographic visions that cause us to reflect on the industrial heritage through a danced architectural journey.

International Meeting of New Artistic Forms Del 2 al 5 de junio De Wednesday a Saturday Tickets: Az Info and azkunazentroa.eus

PROTOTIPOAK. INTERNATIONAL MEETING OF NEW ARTISTIC FORMS IS CONCEIVED AS A WORK IN PROGRESS THAT BEGINS A YEAR AND A HALF BEFORE ITS PUBLIC PRESENTATION.

28 | eszenAZ. Azkuna Zentroa performing arts season 2020-2021

Prototipoak. International Meeting of New Artistic Forms, aims to bring new artistic forms closer to the citizenry through projects that address everyday aspects of city life. Held every two years as a Biennial, it is developed in collaboration with different institutions, organisations, groups and individuals. It counts with the participation of various artists and projects which, from the ‘site specific’ perspective, i.e. from the adaptation of their work to a proposed context, suggest new experiences to a variety of audiences. Although the public part of the project takes place between 2 and 5 June as a meeting, it is conceived as a work in progress that begins a year and a half before its public presentation, continuously changing and adapting to the current situation. In this sense, Prototipoak. International Meeting of New Artistic Forms follows the line of the Centre´s Programme Project by developing contemporary artistic languages, trying to open a ‘common’ space, where horizontal participation among artists, and among artists and communities, is the norm.

HOTSETAN IS AZKUNA ZENTROA’S EXPERIMENTAL MUSIC AND SOUND ART PROGRAMME, AIMED AT PRESENTING THE SOUND WORK OF LOCAL AND INTERNATIONAL ARTISTS AND FOSTERING MEETINGS BETWEEN CREATORS.

The sound artists Eraeran, Myriam RZM, Matías Riquelme & Fernando Ulzión and Mudoh present their work as part of Hotsetan, Azkuna Zentroa’s experimental music and sound art programme that showcases local artists working with experimental sound and music through concerts. Eraeran presents a series of short electro-acoustic pieces developed by Miguel A. García together with various local sound artists, conceived as a supplement to the creation and improvisation workshops. Their research focuses on collective sound creation using scores in varying degrees of freedom, from pure improvisation to performance, with musicians and artists using everything from traditional acoustic instruments to experimental electronic music. The performer and sound experimenter Myriam RZM offers a live performance based on improvisation with self-made DIY/DIT sound tools. According to the artist, «Since 2018 I have been developing this live performance based on improvisation with DIY/DIT tools, adapted to my interest in performative sound, combined with fx pedals and feedback, in action/interaction with my own body in movement». The work of the duo composed of the Chilean cellist, Matías Riquelme, and the saxophonist from Bilbao, Fernando Ulzión, is based on experimentation with sound from the perspective of free improvisation. Each presentation is unique, with each piece inspired by the time and the setting. On this occasion they present their latest work, La Trahison des Mots (Sluchaj, 2020)

Mudoh (Aitor Monje) is a combination of the Spanish word ‘mudo’ (mute), related to the instrumental nature of his music and the letter ‘h’, which is silent. Mudoh is electronic ambient music that uses software, instrument capture, field sounds and digital editing. At the end of the day there will be a concert of improvised music based on the manipulation of a Spanish guitar that is amplified, percussed, rubbed and played with various soundproducing objects and analogically processed with electric guitar effect pedals.

HOTSETAN IS AZKUNA ZENTROA’S EXPERIMENTAL MUSIC AND SOUND ART PROGRAMME, AIMED AT PRESENTING THE SOUND WORK OF LOCAL AND INTERNATIONAL ARTISTS AND FOSTERING MEETINGS BETWEEN CREATORS.

Hotsetan, Azkuna Zentroa’s experimental music and sound art programme continues on 17 March with a series of local artists who are active in experimental sound including Eraeran, Jana Jan, EC and Killerkume. Eraeran is back with a series of electro-acoustic pieces in which he investigates collective sound creation, working with scores in various stages of freedom ranging from pure improvisation to performance. Itziar Markiegi a.k.a. Jana Jan is a transdisciplinary artist, illustrator, noise maker and performer who experiments and creates graphic and sound collaborations and improvisations with different artists. She explores the creation and manipulation of sound, accumulation and feedback through improvisation and the creative use of error, DIY feelings and the body as an active instrument. The work of the artist EC (Estanis Comella) is based on the organisation and composition of elements in time and space, creating fragmented and experimental frameworks that form specific patterns, breaking away from categorisations and genres and bringing it all together in a single unit.

HOTSETAN IS AZKUNA ZENTROA’S EXPERIMENTAL MUSIC AND SOUND ART PROGRAMME, AIMED AT PRESENTING THE SOUND WORK OF LOCAL AND INTERNATIONAL ARTISTS AND FOSTERING MEETINGS BETWEEN CREATORS.

The Azkuna Zentroa’s experimental music and sound art programme, Hotsetan, continues on 28 April with Eraeran, Radithor, Testura and In Memoriam Jon Higging by Alvin Lucier, all proposals that explore using drones and sounds sustained over long periods of time. Eraeran (Miguel A. García) is back with a series of electro-acoustic pieces in which he investigates collective sound creation, working with scores in various stages of freedom ranging from pure improvisation to performance. Radithor is the pseudonym of Yeray Portillo, co-founder along with WLDV of the electronic music label, Eclectic Reactions; co-founder of the Distopia Club group/promoter; and manager, along Antton Iturbe, of fanzine Uhin. As a DJ and producer he has played at many venues and festivals such as Mugako Festibala, Vocoder Club, Femur Club, Club Le Larraskito, Fever, Dabadaba, Jimmy Jazz, Zarata Fest and MEM, among others. His work runs the gamut from experimental music to industrial music, IDM, techno, ambient or drone, and his live sessions are characterised by creating hypnotic and kinematic atmospheres through a combination of different tools. In 2021 he will publish his second work in physical format titled A Tierra. Next up is the Ander Mújika’s group, Testura. Following the break-up of Napoka Iria, Mujika worked on several projects before eventually retrieving the drafts he had kept in a drawer and getting to work drawing something that would be very much his own. Recovering the sketches drawn between 2017 and 2019, he cleaned them up and arranged them into a series of sound pieces and songs.

ging. Alvin Lucier In Memoriam Jon Hig

Alberdi Testura. Photo: Nora

In Memoriam Jon Higging by Alvin Lucier, performed by a local artist, is a composition for clarinet and sine wave. The sine wave passes slowly through the clarinet’s entire frequency range so slowly that the glissando is hardly noticeable. Meanwhile, the clarinet plays long tones, producing audible hits between the two sounds. Alvin Lucier (1931, USA) is a composer and sound artist, and one of the most influential figures in experimental music of the last half century. His work focuses on the exploration of sound as a physical phenomenon.
