VANESSA LEAVER PROJECT Living in Cornwall I am mesmerised by the beautiful ocean surrounding us. It is calming, energising and connects my thoughts to nature, where many answers for today’s environment issues may be found. I care about protecting this special place and all the ocean creatures who live there. Our globally rare grey seals are extremely endearing with their huge eyes and characterful faces – they are easy to love. I want to inspire others to love them and care about protecting them too. I began to watch our local seals, photograph them with a zoom lens, and send photos of sightings to the Cornwall Seal Group Research Trust for their data records. I wanted to help more so I trained as a British Divers Marine Life Rescue marine medic. Now I help monitor seals who may need help, raise awareness about the dangers of pollution and disturbing seals in their haul out spaces, attend beach call outs for injured seals and help in the new seal pup hospital with the aim that one day they will be fully recovered and returned to the wild.

My images are a combination of seals from the Cornish Seal Sanctuary, wild seals who have popped up to look at me on their terms, and some of the amazing volunteers who help in many varied ways. If you are concerned about a seal keep your distance and please call BDMLR on 01825 765546. www.bdmlr.org www.sealalliance.org www.cornwallsealgroup.co.uk www.sealsanctuary.sealifetrust.org I care about giving a voice to nature to help to preserve and protect our threatened environments today for the future. I have produced work for a specialist conservation group working to promote Cornish nature. I would love to be more involved helping conservation projects with media content and enthusiasm, please contact me if I can help.

LUKE BARLOW PROJECT
Over the last year Luke has been traveling around various Cornish locations, particularly around the coast photographing the bays and beaches. Living in Cornwall his whole life has given him an in depth knowledge of the local area. This has allowed him to photograph the lesser-known areas of Cornwall, both in the day and at night.

For his final project, Luke focused on the south coast, western Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB). The aim of this project was to shed light on a lesser-known area of Cornwall as well as showing a new perspective of these areas with the use of drone photography. Luke is also looking to expand his knowledge of drone photography, and to start looking for new clients to work with.

PHOEBE JOHNS PROJECT
Back in September 2018 I started to further my interest in photography by starting the Access course in photography film and creative media. I decided this was something I could do for a career and something that really took my interest. After completing that course I started my foundation degree in photography and media, which I also enjoyed, and decided to go one step further. Now at the end of the BA degree I have expanded my knowledge and creative practice enough to get to where I am now. I feel I am able to show my thoughts and ideas through a more creative platform. This is more of the style I like to work in as I think it shows my personality and allows my work to respond to creative ideas.
For my Specialist Production I decided to produce a project that meant a lot to me, to expand on a subject I briefly looked at back in 2019. I named my project ‘Afterlife’. This project shows my ideas and beliefs about what happens to us after we leave this world. Many asked themselves if anything happens after you pass on, but we only really have our myths and theories to go on. After looking at different cultural beliefs through time it helped me to understand these meanings for other people, which allowed me to get to the ideas I have now. Through this project I would like to show how I feel about this topic and my own beliefs.

SAM NANCARROW PROJECT Over the last few years Sam has worked around the south west at various cycling events and races, where he has captured all the action. These photographs show the physical ability and emotions of the cyclists, as well as the landscapes that they compete in. Becoming part of the cycling community has allowed Sam to see all of the work that goes on behind the scenes to create events for cyclist to attend. This inspired Sam to show his photography from these races so the public can be inspired to grab a bike and ride. The work Sam is exhibiting is a
collection of his photographs from various different events and shoots throughout the south west. This work has the aim to encourage others to take up cycling and to get involved in their local bike community.

The graduation show of the BA Applied Media represents a diverse range of media and photography practices from short documentary films to fine art and sports photography, promotional content creation and print publications. This year’s work was made as we are emerging from the affects of Covid on our world. Whilst the previous two years of study were under lockdown conditions this year has allowed the students to get out into the county and produce work that represents our relationship with land and sea, the development of activities we might have pursued during lockdown and the more personal explorations of our relationship with life and death. The work on show at this year’s exhibition clearly demonstrates the wide range of creativity and media skills the students have gained through the three years of their studies at Truro and Penwith College. They have developed concepts and ideas that will be key for creative businesses throughout Cornwall or to develop their own work as creative media practitioners, adding to the rich cultural life of Cornwall and beyond.
The BA (Hons) Applied Media is a one-year top-up degree. Applicants must have completed a Foundation Degree or HND in a relevant subject. The course is suitable for students from varied media backgrounds including photography, content creation, film production, animation, advertising and digital visualization and graphic design.

BA APPLIED MEDIA baapmedia.wordpress.com
The Applied Media degree at Truro College has evolved in response to the requirements of production and consumption in a media industry continually in flux. It builds on the notion of media convergence, of technological change which brings all media closer together in methods and capabilities.
As large areas of the media have moved online organisations and businesses have more and more need for creative content for their websites and social media platforms. Therefore the course is designed to give students the skills and understanding to work in this context; whether that is working for the market or producing creative work that responds to our current ‘global village’ and its key ideas and concerns. The course has always welcomed a range of creative practitioners who wish to develop their own practice but broaden their media skills. These have included photographers, film makers, audio engineers, graphic designers, computer games designers and online content creators. The course incorporates modules that also investigate the interrelationship of social, cultural, creative, environmental, commercial and promotional environments and discusses the changes brought about by the shift in new media technologies. This allows the programme to create media practitioners who will understand the balance between their specialistknowledge and skills and a wider awareness and understanding across media industries.
