WAYS OF SEEING BA APPLIED MEDIA CATALOGUE 2017
BA APPLIED MEDIA TRURO COLLEGE The philosophy of the BA programme is underpinned by the concept of ‘360 Degree Media’. This contemporary approach will ensure that students are fully equipped for the media industries of the twenty-first century. The concept of ‘360 Degree Media’ has evolved in response to the requirements of production and consumption in a media industry continually in flux. It builds on the notion of media convergence, of technological change which brings all media closer together in methods and capabilities. ‘360 Degree Media’ incorporates not only the changes brought about by the shift in new media technologies but also the interrelationship of social, cultural, industrial, commercial and promotional environments. In essence this will allow the programme to create media practitioners who will understand the balance between their specialist knowledge and a wider awareness and understanding across media industries. http://www.truro-penwith.ac.uk/course/entry/applied-media-truro-college-fulltime https://baapmedia.wordpress.com/
The 2017 graduation show of the BA Applied Media represents a diverse range of media and photography practices, from the work of Chris Hall who has documented the ever changing beauty of the sea to Jim Byrne who is looking at the impact of light and water on the landscape, his work being an emotional response to the environment he inhabits. Filmmakers Ben Ward, Jake Thomas and Luke Sterry are commenting on modern society and the impact it is having on individuals, while Danielle Page and Nykitta Mackenzie have used both film and photography to raise important issues and support local causes. Karen O'Dell is using film and photography to create a website that champions those who voluntarily give their time and support to local organisations. Katy Smith has also looked at the work of young volunteers who are supporting the arts at the Hall for Cornwall. Dan Philbrooks has produced a creative new music video for local band Blue River and Dan Smallwood is hoping to gain a following on Youtube with his films showing his knowledge of motorbikes and the Cornish roads he rides on. Print work includes Tom Griffin's illustrated book about his own experience with mental health issues, while Danny Parker and Taya Portlock have both produced print publications that showcase their photography and design skills but with very different audiences; Danny has created a new skate zine whereas Taya has produced a local magazine that celebrates arts and culture from around the region.

My photography is primarily focussed on the beauty of the Cornish coastline, the main subject being the ocean. By building on previous projects and by incorporating a critical awareness of the theory of the sublime, this series of images aims to explore seascape photography in an inventive and abstract way. Within this body of work, entitled ‘ SeaPaintings, there is an awareness of light, colour, form and repetition. There is a painterly quality to these images and what you see is an abstract interpretation of the scene before me. These photographs are truly unique.

Rag an moyha da Hidden beneath the profitable and illustrious tourist scene of St Ives, Cornwall is a community, a community that relies on the efforts of individuals who volunteer their time and their services. Their reasons for volunteering are countless; some volunteer to promote, ensuring that those who visit their town will return, yet others give their time to those who live there, to give them opportunities they may not have had. Whatever the reason, they volunteer for the greater good. My work has always related back to the community in which I live, a community that wouldn't survive without volunteers. This body of work looks in depth at a range of volunteers within the town and community of St Ives, in Cornwall.

Battle Scars is a South West based charity that provides support and counselling to help people recover from self-harm. They aim to also provide support to friends and family, giving them the tools and advice to help those they are close to on the path to recovery. Currently an unregistered charity, this short film has been created to help raise awareness. It aims to bring about recognition of the charity and to help raise the necessary funds to push the charity forward and get them registered, enabling them to reach out further to those suffering and that are in need. Magazines and fashion have always been a passion of mine. Flicking through my mum's fashion magazines at a young age, gazing at the glossy pages full of highly glamorised photo shoots and lavish clothes that one could only imagine wearing. It wasn’ t until I got a bit older that I started to read and collect magazines, Vogue being the main one, and from there an obsession began. Zines are the cool, passionately made and somewhat raw versions of magazines, focusing on subjects that are current and contain content that is perfectly suited for the millennial’ s. This is an ongoing Zine project, named ‘MOSS’ that includes fashion shoots, interviews and lifestyle articles that entwines into a blog on Instagram. In this day and age, it can be refreshing to hold a physical object instead of looking at a phone screen, however print today needs online content to fall back on. It is a way of equal balance.’

For my final project I have produced a promotional campaign in response to the current issue of equal gender pay. I took my inspiration for this from a recent Superbowl advert, as advertising is the industry I would like to work in. I have produced this campaign because it is something that I find important and with the hope of it raising awareness of this subject area as it is an on going issue that is not promoted enough within the media. I am also hoping that by producing this that it will encourage women to stand up for equality within their workplace.
I have created a short promotional film for the Hall For Cornwall’ s Young Volunteer Project. I've worked closely with the HFC to create this video to target a younger demographic and encourage them to get involved in volunteering at the theatre.

Project title: Wish. Throughout my life I have always been fascinated by stories, usually those by Hayao Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli. Even though I enjoy animated films I didn't wish to pursue animation but storytelling instead, writing scripts similar to those that fascinated me as a child. Spirited Away played a major role for me in finding a deeper understanding of movies. The movie looked at lost innocence, a child losing her name and identity and being thrown into the world of adulthood, with her gluttonous parents becoming pigs. Wish is a film in which a boy wishes away someone important to him, it's about a thought turned reality and the consequences of that thought.

ADDICTION In a world full of people who are addicted to consuming products, what would happen if their fixes are taken away. Four college friends who are each addicted to a certain product; phone, cigarettes, coffee and fast food, turn up to college one day to find not only the whole area abandoned but their favourite product has also disappeared. When the friends try to investigate the strange events, they slowly break down mentally and physically due to their own withdrawals and soon start to turn on each other. This is the most recent production of Ben Edward J. Ward. He is a 22 year old filmmaker who has created nearly 200 films since joining the BA Applied Media course 3 years ago.
