UNVEIL VEIL in lock
So this year’s degree show is a little different to normal. Is it post-normal or the new normal? Only time will tell. All the work that the students have produced has been made under coronavirus lockdown and demonstrates the resilience, flexibility and creativity of our students. Maybe they were lucky that they are studying the media and under lockdown it has been the means by which we are communicating with the world outside our self-isolation, sharing what was previously secured by ticket prices, entrance fees and subscription payments, being entertained when the monotony of daily life in these unprecedented times gets us down and creating content to reach others trying to cope with this strange and sometimes scary limbo we find ourselves in. While this year’s group is only small, with 6 students on the BA Applied Media, they represent a wide range of creative media practices; we have a computer games designer who completed his FdA at Penwith before joining us at Truro to complete his degree, a film-maker and a graphics designer from the HND Moving Image course, a writer and illustrator from the English Studies FdA at Truro, a podcaster who having completed is FdA in Sports Science worked with Chaos Online radio in Truro and decided he wanted to change direction and develop media and audio skills on the BA and also a media make-up student who joined us from to widen her media skills set and complete her degree in Cornwall. We hope you enjoy looking at their work. You can access it via the show website https://baapmedia.wix.com/unveil As we are not having a physical show and cannot get the normal feedback we would be grateful if you could leave any feedback on the comment page of the exhibition website.
The BA (Hons) Applied Media is a one-year top-up degree. Applicants must have completed a Foundation Degree or HND in a relevant subject. The course is suitable for students from varied media backgrounds including photography, television and film production, animation, advertising and digital visualization and computer games design. The Applied Media degree at Truro College has evolved in response to the requirements of production and consumption in a media industry continually in flux. It builds on the notion of media convergence, of technological change which brings all media closer together in methods and capabilities. As large areas of the media have moved online organisations and businesses have more and more need for creative content for their websites and social media platforms. Therefore the course is designed to give students the skills and understanding to work in this context; whether that is working for the
market or producing creative work that responds to our current ‘global village’ and its key ideas and concerns. The course has always welcomed a range of creative practitioners who wish to develop their own practice but broaden their media skills. These have included photographers, film makers, audio engineers, graphic designers, computer games designers and online content creators. The course incorporates modules that also investigate the interrelationship of social, cultural, creative, environmental, commercial and promotional environments and discusses the changes brought about by the shift in new media technologies. This allows the programme to create media practitioners who will understand the balance between their specialist knowledge and skills and a wider awareness and understanding across media industries.

CARRIE FRANCIS Carrie is outgoing and creative and loves to work as part of a team and as an individual. Previously she has completed an FDA in special effects, hair and media make up. Carrie wanted to expand her media skills and learn additional techniques in order to pursue her career further. Upon completing this course Carrie hope’s to work within a media role, focusing on photography and makeup. Additionally, Carrie also has a huge interest in the marketing and advertising sector and would love to be able to apply her skills in this sector.
The images will represent what many individuals may be going but are quite often hidden. Make up can be used for positive purposes both for individual use and artistic purposes to visually represent issues. For some individuals make up can be used for comfort and to detract from these complications. Make up can also be used to hide or disguise, which reflects on the judgement society has on others. Carrie’s final images aim to question whether judgements should really be made based upon appearance,. After all, things may not always be as they seem. For her final project, Carrie focused on looking into domestic abuse and violence. During the COVID-19 crisis it has been brought to light that many people have been experiencing darker issues within their own homes. Through extensive research Carrie wanted to develop images that expose and represent these harrowing issues.

Artaya magazine is an online publication that centres around Japanese Art and Culture. Primarily targeted at a teenage demographic (12-18 years), the publication aims to educate young adults by highlighting the difference between Asian and Western cultures. The written material will provide insights about a broad range of topics from modern-day Japanese pop culture to art history, literature and more. Vicky’s love of Japanese pop culture stems from an appreciation of the animated films by Hayao Miyazaki. The Artaya magazine has enabled her to create a project that brings together all her various skills. Included within this first interactive issue are examples of her animation, illustration and written research. Vicky is hoping to increase her chances of recognition by entering her animated piece into the Watershed’s Depict Short Film Competition and by also creating printed copies of her publication to hand out at upcoming manga and anime conventions.
JED DOREAN-MITCHELL I’m 23 and love games. Since the age of 6 I have always been fascinated by the concept of games (from unlocking characters/weapons/buildings or even genres that doesn’t have that mechanic of levelling up). When I was 17, I wanted to understand what it meant to be a game designer, so 6 years ago I decided to ‘take the leap’ from gamer to designer. Ever since then I have not looked back, my knowledge of a game and the techniques used has quadrupled and my respect for developers has changed my evaluation of a game. I will now analyze every aspect of a game before giving feedback. I love to create game concepts on paper and then creating them for my own enjoyment. https://jd152909.wixsite.com/cornwallgames

JIM GODWIN Since first learning about the professional creative process of film and design at the age of 16, I have been consistently driven to find work in this field and express my ideas through these mediums. Through this, I feel I have gained an in-depth knowledge of many technical aspects of creative media production. My education in media has been gained entirely through Truro College, with a short period of time studying in Australia, where I learnt about more in-depth design theories such as ontological designing and how it is applied in our ever-evolving world. Although a lot of my further and higher education experiences have been film based, my true passion is with graphic design. Since starting higher education, I have started to engage with more indepth design theories and found a real interest in classical art forms, this led to a far deeper understanding of graphic design history and just how important it is for a designer to have a grasp on the movement of modernism.
For my final major production, my plan was to create a food magazine based in Cornwall, engaging with theories on contemporary magazine design and texts on the magazine publishing industry. Due to an unexpected pandemic, unfortunately my practical project has been compromised, this means I now needed a new direction as food vendors across the UK have either closed or switched to delivery only. To combat this issue, I constructed a contingency plan and developed a suitable idea. The food magazine has still gone ahead as I have altered the idea, the issue is simply based around the pandemic, entitled “The crisis issue. I have kept the theme of food but changed the page content from restaurants and take-away food venues to more home-cooking content, as well as insight into the pandemic and how local food vendors are coping with the crisis. https://jimgodwin07.wixsite.com/ portfolio
