Although she isn’t using the same photographic style as these photographers she has looked at the work of Gregory Crewdson, Alex Prager and Thomas Demand to inspire her work. Her focus for this project is the fact that children are growing up too fast, and that they are “old before their time”. She is portraying this by getting children to use their pretend play toys in adult environments, to make the viewer question whether the child is taking part taking in adult activities, or not.

produced a number of short promotional films for companies and organisations, to help highlight the work they do so they can share it with other people. One organisation that I am passionate about promoting is the NHS. Specifically, within the area of mental health. Mental health is a broad area that is often misunderstood, avoided or ignored completely. To help raise awareness for some of the teams that work with people with mental health issues, I have produced a few promotional films that highlight the efforts and kindness of the staff working on or with mental health wards. The Allotment Project promotes a project that sees people with mental health issues come together to help plant and grow a number of plants. Having produced the film and met those involved, the project

seems to really give those that attend the allotments some much needed enjoyment and achievement. Being around people they know and trust also helps them to socialise in a way they may be unable to do otherwise. The Juniper Arts Project is another project by the NHS. The short film I have produced provides details on a refurbishment of a mental health ward. What makes this refurbishment so important is that those staying on the ward can create pieces of art which will then be placed around the ward. Currently, the ward has very little colour on the white walls, making the place seem dull. The art pieces are expected to brighten the place up to ensure the environment becomes more homely. Hopefully this can help achieve faster recovery times.

Project title: The Tale of the Shrill Carder Bumblebee Family.
Felicia M Jones Email: feliciam.jones@icloud.com Web: turquoisestagdesign.weebly.com
This book is both a physical and interactive document. The interactive book, uploaded onto issuu.com, has hyperlinks to the website www.bumblebeeconservation.org The Bumblebee has inhabited our world for almost 30 million years, that’s 24 million years longer than man. Now, man needs to understand that if the Bumblebee disappears from our lives we will be in deep trouble. We need to Save their Stripes!
The Bumblebee is found worldwide, but since the Second World War over three million hectares of lowland meadows have been converted into intensive agriculture, destroying much of the Bumblebees’ habitat. The Bumblebee Conservation Trust was set up in 2006 by David Goulson. It is a small charity that works tirelessly to raise the awareness of the plight of the Bumblebee. The Bumblebee Conservation Trust is my client. I have produced an interactive and physical book telling the story of the Shrill Carder Bumblebee that is faced with extinction. The book is inspired by the work of Beatrix Potter. It is called ‘The Tale of the Shrill Carder Family.’ It tells the story of Lizzy, a Queen Bumblebee by describing the lifecycle of this species that was formerly widespread across southern Britain. In order to raise awareness of the plight of the Shrill Carder Bumblebee, my anthropomorphic story book will reach a younger audience. This demographic is the future of Britain and by informing and educating, using the written word and naturally inspired imagery, one can provoke empathy and conservation behaviour. Once empathy is achieved, conservation behaviour will follow. As Dioum (1968) said, “we will conserve only what we love…”
FELICIA M JONES
Throughout my life, a love of nature and animals has influenced and inspired my artistic and design creativity. Today, I am a designer and illustrator who uses nature to inspire an informed response to creative productions. Childhood memories conjure up the sound of summer: The Bumblebee. On hearing a Bumblebee’s buzz, I am instantly transported back in time to long hot summer days and happy moments. The Bumblebee is an endearing insect who deserves my attention in order to raise the awareness of the plight of this wonderful, warm blooded and wild species.

Having recently completed an FDA in Digital Visualisation at Truro College, Jason is nearing the completion of a BA (Hons) in Applied Media. During his time at Truro College he worked towards developing illustration skills in a digital environment before transitioning into a more 3D orientated skillset. Jason has been working with content creation in real-time 3D worlds with a strong emphasis on Virtual Reality.
Jason Miller Web: solarisvoid.com
During his experiments in content creation, he became familiar with a 3D scanning technique known as photogrammetry. This technique allows for extremely life like reproductions of real world objects to be recreated in a 3D environment. Objects scanned in this way maintain realistic visual qualities. Rocks for instance may have had millions of years of erosion and weathering involved in shaping them; all of these subtle details are carried over seamlessly. Creating content for VR requires a wide range of skills and Jason has become extremely versatile in many aspects of the pipeline from initial sketches through to finalised hifidelity 3D assets optimised to run flawlessly in a real-time VR environment.

The ‘Deep Sea’ is the cold and dark environment of the ocean. Unlike in space where there is no air pressure, the water pressure at the deepest point of the ocean is more than 11,318 tons/square metre. This is equivalent to one person trying to support the weight of 50 jumbo jets! The use of underwater vehicles allows humans to explore the unknown depths. But more than 90% of the ocean and possibly thousands of alien like creatures still remain undiscovered. The ocean has so many wonders but sadly it is suffering. Six billion kilograms of garbage is dumped into our seas every year. There are an estimated 46,000 pieces of marine litter floating on every square mile of ocean. Most of this waste is plastic. With 50-80% of all life on earth found in the ocean it is no surprise that creatures become affected by the waste produced by humans. However it’s not too late to do some thing about the marine debris crisis.
As a consumer you have power: small changes create huge impacts. The film, ‘The Deep Sea’ explores the current crisis via a montage of plastic use in every day life. This plastic will take a minimum of 450 years to decompose. Degrading into smaller and smaller pieces, plastic is becoming a part of our food chain. Overall it is the huge corporations that need to change, starting with their packaging. As a consumer you are in charge of whom you give your money to and the products you support. I filmed par t of ‘The Big Spring Beach Clean’ promoted by Surfers Against Sewage who are targeting the marine litter crisis with various campaigns. These include ‘break the bag habit’ and ‘mermaid’s tears’ just to name a couple. ‘The Deep Sea’ encourages people to recycle and reuse, promoting a positive change to the world. Afterall, “A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.” Lao Tzu.

BA Applied Media Degree Catalogue 2016 | Truro College I have been interested in, and have taken part in, a variety of extreme sports since an early age. Skateboarding is my main hobby and I have integrated this sport into my own film work. Recently I have branched off from skateboarding and have taken a keen interest in other extreme sports creating promotional films that focus on a variety of activities during my time on the BA. This has allowed me to be creative with my film making. My first film focused on the mountain biking trails at Lanhydrock, where I was able to film on the trails, work for some amazing and talented people, even getting to experience the trails myself. Filming at Lanhydrock and then editing the footage made me realise how much I enjoyed producing creative promotional videos. I am currently working for Elm Farm and Bike Barn, near Redruth, where I am creating a promotional video focusing on the farm and bike trails. I have really enjoyed my time filming at Elm Farm as it offers an amazing bike shop, trails, a cafĂŠ, views and more. I always enjoy the post production phase so I can exhibit my skills in creating an effective, exciting and interesting promotional video that can be shared by the client through their website and social media.

The Tap Dancing Mermaid by Tessa Bide [picture courtesy Carn to Cove] Project
Having a keen interest in the theatre and arts scene in North Cornwall, my project aims to provide promotional material for Carn to Cove, Cornwall’s performing arts scheme for local communities. Carn to Cove is a registered charity that relies predominantly upon volunteers to fulfil their mission of bringing poetry, music, drama, and dancing into village halls, chapels and other small spaces in the rural communities of Cornwall. After meeting with director Claire Marshall I have received a positive response to my proposal and have started to work with her to produce a poster, flyer and short advert designed to be shared on social media. These are to be targeted at infant and junior school aged children and their parents, promoting the company and boosting their profile on social media which is an aspect of their marketing strategy which has been identified as somewhat lacking.

Bio In 2012 I decided to retrain after taking a career gap of 8 years in which I had my 3 children. I chose a two year foundation degree in Interior Design which proved to be an excellent experience, increasing my confidence and adding to my skills set. Eventually I decided that although I had enjoyed the course I did not want to pursue a career as an Interior Designer. As I was keen to achieve a full degree I moved across to the Applied Media BA course, after completing a bridging module to ensure the skills I had gained on the previous course would assist in this option. I have chosen to focus on the advertising and marketing aspects of media, using the skills I gained in the Interior Design course combined with the support of my lecturers and peer group.

Becoming a mother has inspired me to become a photographer; seeing life on a much deeper level. I have always longed to become a photographer. It was only when I became a mother that I truly picked up a camera. Being a mother and a photographer can be challenging, although my daughter is the one person that continually inspires me. I enjoy capturing our close relationship. The photographs are from my perspective and depict how I feel my daughter sees through her eyes, as much as my own. Project title: PND

This is an on-going project based upon women who have overcome post-natal depression. This is a concept close to me due to experiencing post-natal depression myself. Each image visually portrays every mother’s separate encounter with post-natal. Uniting women’s stories, to compile a collection of faces, retrospectively allowing closure for themselves and proving to others that it is possible to escape from the dark grey cloud that once lingered.

BA Applied Media Degree Catalogue 2016 | Truro College Project Title: Duchenne Muscular dystrophy is a genetic disorder that causes muscles to weaken. There are nine types of this disease and Duchenne is considered to be the most severe form. It passed down through the mother and usually only affects boys. There is still no known cure and though life expectancy has now dramatically increased, when Sophie’s Great Uncle Nicholas Gardner was born, living beyond teenage years was rare. Nicholas died when he was fifteen. His Mother, having not been aware that she was a carrier of the disease, told her remaining two daughters to never have children. The eldest Myrtle, (who wanted children) obeyed her but the youngest Heather, did not. Instead she went to a hospital to get tested. Heather’s test came back negative but she kept this information from everyone and went on to have two daughters; Shan and Julie. It is unknown to the family why Heather would not share her discovery that genetic testing for the disease was available. This vital information could have undoubtedly changed lives. Instead, the weight and worry of this tragedy has been passed down through the generations. Shan and Julie were separated at a young age, neither being raised by their mother, but have since reconnected. Through this new relationship questions were raised about the disease as Julie had given birth to two healthy boys. This revelation prompted Sophie to contact her local hospital where she discovered she only had a 1% chance of being a carrier.

The Future of Mining in Cornwall Led by Cornish engineer Matt this documentary demonstrates the ambition that Matt (and his business partner Nathan) have to re-open a mine in Cornwall. As ‘local lads’ who have studied at the Camborne School of Mines they are both qualified and determined to revive the mining industry not just as a business venture but also to benefit the local community. Matt (and Nathan) have invested time and money developing their business plan and are enthusiastic to make a start; but permission to proceed is depending on their ability to raise funds needed to secure the exclusive rights to mine. The risk is that as they struggle to raise the funds for their venture an international company with funds at the ready will beat them to it.

With a passion for celebrating the female body in all it’s forms and embracing what makes women individual, my work focuses on expressing ourselves creatively through feeling, fashion and creativity. This project aims to show how the way women dress and appear on the outside - including how they express their emotions through fashion - is their choice and that it is not for anyone else to tell them how to do this. After studying on the National Diploma at Truro College for two years I then moved onto the HND Moving Image and now the BA. My aim in all my films is to make them relatable and shareable on a variety of platforms, especially social media. Web: filmsbyfrank.weebly.com/

Inspired by dystopian fiction and philosopher Jean Baudrillard’s work on hyper-reality, his latest film, In Memoriam, follows a man who is kidnapped and forced to relive his chequered past through his own erased memories. It features themes of identity, morality and idealism and juxtaposes the bright and stunning Cornish landscape with the postmodern style of dark science-fiction. The film takes influence from Charlie Brooker’s Black Mirror which features a similar speculative look at the future, with a focus on technology and the dangers it poses. Other major influences included the work of esteemed science-fiction author Phillip K. Dick, and films such as Inception and Blade Runner, which feature similar ideas of memory manipulation and identity. Conor Wilson Web: iamconorwilson.co.uk Email: conor@iamconorwilson.co.uk

The philosophy of the BA Applied Media at Truro College is underpinned by the concept of ‘360 Degree Media’. This contemporary approach will ensure that students are fully equipped for the media Industries of the twenty-first century. The concept of ‘360 Degree Media’ has evolved in response to the requirements of production and consumption in a media industry continually in flux. It builds on the notion of media convergence, of technological change which brings all media closer together in methods and capabilities. ‘360 Degree Media’ incorporates not only the changes brought about by the shift in new media technologies but also the interrelationship of social, cultural, industrial, commercial and promotional environments. In essence this will allow the programme to create media practitioners who will understand the balance between their specialist knowledge and a wider awareness and understanding across media industries. This course is a third year top up that students have progressed onto from HE courses at Truro College such as FdA Photography and Digital Imaging, HND Moving Image and FdA Digital Illustration. http://www.truro-penwith.ac.uk/courses-explained/university-level/ www.truro-penwith.ac.uk/course/entry/applied-media-truro-collegefulltime/ baapmedia.wordpress.com
