locked down
So once again we found ourselves in lockdown, with lectures online and everyone trying their best to produce work using what was available in their immediate locale. This winters lockdown was especially hard on everyone and while the first lockdown was about sharing and community the third one seemed less positive as everyone hunkered down to endure the dark days in a kind of national hibernation. All the work that the students have produced has been made under coronavirus lockdown and demonstrates the resilience, flexibility and creativity of our students. We hope you enjoy looking at the students work. You can also access it via the show website https://baapmedia.wordpress.com/ degree-show/
The BA (Hons) Applied Media is a one-year top-up degree. Applicants must have completed a Foundation Degree or HND in a relevant subject. The course is suitable for students from varied media backgrounds including photography, television and film production, animation, advertising and digital visualization and computer games design. The Applied Media degree at Truro College has evolved in response to the requirements of production and consumption in a media industry continually in flux. It builds on the notion of media convergence, of technological change which brings all media closer together in methods and capabilities. As large areas of the media have moved online organisations and businesses have more and more need for creative content for their websites and social media platforms. Therefore the course is designed to give students the skills and understanding to work in this context; whether that is working for the market or producing creative work that responds to our current ‘global village’ and its key ideas and concerns. The course has always welcomed a range of creative practitioners who wish to develop their own practice but broaden their media skills. These have included photographers, film makers, audio engineers, graphic designers, computer games designers and online content creators. The course incorporates modules that also investigate the interrelationship of social, cultural, creative, environmental, commercial and promotional environments and discusses the changes brought about by the shift in new media technologies. This allows the programme to create media practitioners who will understand the balance between their specialistknowledge and skills and a wider awareness and understanding across media industries.

Ben Fletcher During lockdown I was feeling isolated in my small village of St Agnes. As well as living here I work full time in the area. Wanting to get out during the pandemic and take in the beauty around me, I took up landscape photography and it helped me escape the isolated feeling of the covid outbreak. I have focused this project on creating a book and large prints to show the beautiful coastal walks and scenic views from the parish. I’ve also spoken to locals to get their view on the parish during the last 12 months and how being blessed with living in this area have helped with positive mental health and escaping that isolation.
This whole project was done using just mobile devices. text, photos, and interviews all conducted on an ipad pro and Samsung s20 ultra. I used to be very much against the idea of mobiles becoming a big part of the photography industry but as of late I love the idea. I’ve grown to accept the change and the idea that everyone can create beautiful photos with whats in their pocket.

Branding communication has always been the biggest marketing priority of a business. Creative media was seen as a mere promotion. The pandemic has caused a sudden shift in how organisations integrate technology. Priorities have reversed. Now the ability to use technology in combination with media is core to a successful operation. This projects original brief shifted in context to COVID, from old direct marketing to modern models. This led me to push the client’s products virtually with an online learning platform and eCommerce store

Kerry Doherty At the start of Lockdown one of my best friends named James bought himself a small hatchback sports car. Upon being bored at home and not working for a few weeks due to regulations James made the decision to transform his Suzuki and customise it. James completely transformed the Suzuki in just a matter of weeks, whilst doing this he made an Instagram account to show people his process of the build. Fortunately, James gained an audience just shy of 1000 followers which gave him the inspiration to create a YouTube channel, so he could post videos to give his audience a better view of his car builds. Due to unfortunate circumstances, in-between filming of the Suzuki there was an accident meaning the Suzuki was unusable. Luckily it didn’t take long for James to replace his vehicle. We decided to carry on with the YouTube video but base it on introducing his new car the viewers. Kerry Instagram @kerrydohertyphotography James Instagram @southwestswift

Sweet scoop is a new and unique ice cream brand concept delivered to customers on four wheels. I feel that right now people have looked to takeaways to fill the void hospitality has left when restaurants closed for lockdown. Food vans in particular have been a convenient and successful source of al fresco dining whilst still keeping within the lockdown restrictions, and from this point forward I think it is time for the food truck industry to really take off. Sweet Scoop brings together the traditional ice cream van with the modern concept of the mobile food truck. https://alexnorrisgraphics.wixsite.com/drecklygraphics
