Beck/Arnley Celebrates 100 Years Beck/Arnley has had an exciting year celebrating the 100th birthday of the brand. Employees have banded together to support local charities including Habitat for Humanity, a residential facility for homeless families and several pet rescues. There have also been special employee events and a 100th Anniversary Car Sweepstakes featuring a custom Scion FR-S that was given away at AAPEX. Beck Distributing Corp. was founded in 1914 in New York City by a man in his 20s named Irving Beck. He saw a future in accessories and spare parts for motorcycles, which were starting to become popular. When WWI broke out, he landed a contract to supply the U.S. Army with sidecars, and by the beginning of WWII, Beck Distributing was established as one of the leading suppliers of motorcycle parts and accessories in the U.S. In the late 1940s, Beck saw another opportunity with the emergence of the import sports car in the United States. British carmakers were anxious to find U.S. distribution for their parts, so they went directly to the successful motorcycle parts distributor they had been selling to for years — Beck Distributing. Beck was now in the auto parts business. The next few decades saw rapid
expansion with the growing industry. Acquisitions included Arnley Brake Shoe Co., Brigham-St John Inc. and HNB Foreign Car Parts in Chicago. The largest impact was felt when Beck/Arnley joined forces

Left to right, Ross Proffitt, Sandy Norris, Fitchette and Jean Rivard. “It’s a fun way to celebrate 100 years of history and also build excitement about the future of the brand,” said Norris, director of marketing. The car includes thousands of dollars in upgrades done by Auto Pro of Nashville. Steve Forbes Headlines New AAPEX General Session “Look ahead, great times are to come,” said Steve Forbes, to a roomful of attendees during the new, free General Session Nov. 5 at AAPEX, as he kicked off his keynote address, “The Next Four Years: Navigating the Economy for Business Growth and Success.” Forbes is chairman and editor-in-chief of Forbes Media, and continues to lead the most successful business news magazine in America. He also is the author of a new book, Money: How the Destruction of the Dollar Threatens the Global Economy and What We Can Do About It. Forbes’ discussion provided insights into the nation’s economy, monetary policy and health care reform, but first he highlighted the results of the Nov. 4 elections and the positive things to come in the high technology sector, and in the areas of immigration reform, health insurance and tax reform as a result of the GOP majority in both the House of Representatives and the Senate. In addressing the economy, Forbes said that “we can’t seem to get out of second gear,” and that this “new abnormal” state that we’re in is the result of policy mistakes that hopefully will be corrected in the next few years. Next up, Forbes expressed his thoughts
on the nation’s monetary policy, asking “How do we get a higher standard of living? We need to buy, sell, specialize and invest.” But those transactions are best optimized when money has a fixed value. It’s harder to do commerce and invest in the future when the value of money is in a constant state of flux. The malaise created by unstable money afflicts not only the economy, but all of society, and creates chaos around the world. Those sentiments tie into Forbes’ new book, where he expresses that money is not only a

AASA Know Your Parts Launches New Diagnostics Campaign At AAPEX Demonstrations of the new dedicated micro website focused on the rotating electrical diagnostics for service professionals and quality parts were scheduled throughout AAPEX at the Know Your Parts Exhibit. Know Your Parts is the industry educational campaign managed by the Automotive Aftermarket Suppliers Association (AASA). The rotating electrical campaign is the second in a series of category-specific campaigns designed to educate technicians, shop owners, service writers and other industry repair professionals on the importance of running diagnostics and the value of installing quality premium parts. The campaign is funded and sponsored by AASA member suppliers: ACDelco, BBB Industries, CARDONE Industries, DENSO, Motorcar Parts, Remy International and Robert Bosch. The new campaign, created by Montgomery Advertising (MontAd), kicked off at AAPEX and will run through 2015. In addition to the dedicated micro website and the AAPEX exhibit, the Know Your Parts rotating electrical campaign will include a fully mobile optimized site, an app designed specifically for service professionals and a strong social component.

Aftermarket Auto Parts Alliance Holds Micro-Convention at AAPEX & SEMA Thirty technicians “walk through” at 2014 shows in anticipation of 3,000 who will attend in 2015 Last year, the Aftermarket Auto Parts Alliance announced that it was bringing its national convention to Las Vegas to run concurrently with the AAPEX and SEMA shows in 2015. In anticipation of that event, the Alliance conducted a trial walkthrough of the program at this year’s shows. “The opportunity for our customers to interact with our supplier channel partners at these two shows is a powerful opportunity for both of them,” said John R. Washbish, president and CEO of the Alliance. “Even with a crew like ours it’s a daunting task to bring 3,000 techs to the shows in 2015. We feel that we have a great plan, but it occurred to us that a trial run with a small group would be prudent.” To that end, the Alliance hosted owners

and technicians from 30 shops around the country on Thursday, Nov. 6 at AAPEX and Friday, Nov. 7 at SEMA. The idea is to test and refine the process to optimize the number of visits and maximize the information exchange. “It is a fantastic opportunity to learn directly from the source,” said Lee Ostendorf, owner of Tiremaxx Service Centers in Alexandria, MN. Attending the walkthrough with his son and partner Tyler, he went on to say, “And it’s really incredible how eager manufacturers are to hear about our experiences with their products. It really closes the loop for both of us.” The Alliance’s 2015 convention, dubbed “Aftermarket Jackpot,” will be held at the Mirage Hotel & Resort, Nov. 4-7, 2015. A three-person panel discussed key issues relating to “Aftermarket Access to OEM Education Resources” in a one-hour session during the NASTF Fall 2014 General Meeting, Wednesday, Nov. 5 during AAPEX. Jill Saunders of Toyota, Rob Morrell of WORLDPAC and Bill Moss of EuroService Automotive engaged with panel moderator Skip Potter of NASTF seeking a solution to a mismatch between inconsistent OEM resources and technician expectations. Training resources provided by automakers for their franchise dealer technicians are laid out in a strictly defined and structured learning “roadmap,” said Saunders, a product engineer for Toyota Motor Sales, USA and currently responsible for the development and support of the Techstream Diagnostic Scantool for all of North America and the U.S. Territories. Moss, owner of a four-bay service shop, EuroService Automotive, in Warrenton, Va., and currently serving on the boards of directors for both NASTF and the Automotive Service Association, countered that “independent technicians mostly consume education as a solution-based” event. “This disconnect is frustrating both the OEMs, who are already spending money to comply with laws and agreements, and technicians, who are unsuccessful in their search of specific training topics,” explained Potter, executive director of NASTF. Morrell, director of training for WORLDPAC since 2001 and currently serving as the independent co-chair for the NASTF Education Committee added, “Third-party trainers like us can greatly improve the quality and consistency of our training programs if we have access to existing OEM resources.” Charlie Gorman, one of the founding leaders of NASTF pointed out that the original intent of EPA service information laws was for OEM education resources to flow through these third-party aftermarket trainers, not necessarily direct-to-tech delivery. “But very few (OEM) licensing agreements are available to us,” Morrell continued. “They (OEMs) could make money from us.” Moss acknowledged that it is not the automaker’s responsibility to train the independent technician but, he said, “It’s valuable for us to have access (to OEM education resources) both directly from 54 AAPEX Product Plus | December 2014

the OEM website and through our traditional aftermarket trainers.” Saunders represents one of a growing number of OEMs who view independent service centers outside their franchise system (both aftermarket and other dealer franchises) as an opportunity to supplement the serviceability of their brand as aging vehicles outgrow the warranty period, transfer to second and third owners and move outside the convenient geographic reach of their franchise system. “It’s important for the Toyota brand to work with independents,” she said. Looking ahead toward reducing the frustration shared by OEMs and technicians over aftermarket access to OEM education resources, the panel agreed that NASTF has a role to play. “I think we’ve made a case today that the NASTF Education Committee’s effort to write a best practice document should help,” said Morrell. Moss added, “It’s the technician’s responsibility to the customer to be service-ready and that includes an obligation to stay current through continuing education. It’s up to us shop owners to make sure that happens.” The NASTF Fall 2014 General Meeting continued with a second featured-session, “Vehicle Diagnostics and Programming Under the MOU,” presented by Steve Douglas, senior director for Environmental Affairs at the Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers. “It’s actually a great time to be in the automotive industry,” he said, noting the progress into more efficient vehicles and expansion of diagnostic service technology onto off-the-shelf laptop computers connected to vehicles through improved versions of the J-2534 “black box.” NASTF’s Fall meeting wrapped up with reports by all six committees, led off by Claude Hensley, co-chair of the Vehicle Security Committee, revealing new initiatives by NASTF to keep the Vehicle Security Professional Registry safe from abuse and misuse. E-Tailing In The Auto Care Industry A Hot Topic At AAPEX Interest in the growing e-tailing trend in the auto care industry was evident at AAPEX 2014, as nearly 100 industry professionals attended “Distribution in the Age of E-Tailing,” a session in the AAPEXedu education program. Presented by Chuck Bean, The Martec Group; Bill Thompson, IMR; Jon Rubich, Insights2Action; and Ron Rossi, Auto Care Association on Tuesday, Nov. 4, the session covered: • E-tailing by customer type; • Total e-tailing market in 2013; • “New” e-tailing channels; • Professional technician research habits; • E-tailing purchase drivers; • Industry implications; and
“E-Tailing in the Automotive Aftermarket,” a digital study recently released by the Auto Care Association, analyzes the online retail market for sales of aftermarket parts and serves as the foundation for the association to provide a unified estimate of online sales within the aftermarket. The full report provides a comprehensive analysis of the e-tailing channel based upon a triangulated analysis of pre-existing studies, existing data, consumer and installer surveys and in-depth interviews within the auto care industry. During the Q&A portion of the session, participants acknowledged that the high-growth e-tailing trend is a reality in the auto care industry, and reported making strategic plans accordingly. Federated Kicks Off Holiday Season At AAPEX With $120,000 Donation To Toys for Tots With several United States Marines in attendance, Federated CEO Rusty Bishop presented a check in the amount of $120,000 to David Adamson, operations chief for the Marine Toys for Tots Foundation, during the Federated reception held Nov. 4 at AAPEX. “While our AAPEX reception is time to celebrate and say thank you to our members and suppliers, it is also time to remind everyone that there is still plenty of work to do to collect toys and donations for Toys for Tots,” said Bishop. Flanked by several U.S. Marines, Adamson presented a special award to Bishop in recognition of Federated’s support of the Toys for Tots mission during the Nov. 4 reception. “It was very gratifying to receive special recognition from this great organization for the hard work and generosity of Federated www.aapexshow.com
members and supplier partners. Together, I know they will once again make this holiday season brighter for those less fortunate,” said Bishop.
Adamson also was on-hand throughout AAPEX to share information about Toys for Tots with attendees, as well as collect donations for the worthy organization. The Car Care Council Women’s Board announced Jodi Kramer, vice president, United Marketing Inc., as the 11th annual Auto Care Woman of the Year. Bogi Lateiner, owner, 180 Degrees Automotive Inc., has been named the Female Shop Owner of the Year, while Kathy Jorge, Delphi Product and Service Solutions, has been selected as this year’s Auto Care Woman of Excellence. The announcement was made at the 2014 Women’s Board reception Nov. 4 at AAPEX. The Women of the Year awards are administered by the Women’s Board Career and Leadership Committee. The Woman of the Year is chosen based on her significant leadership and contribution to the auto care community throughout her career. Female Service Shop Owner of the Year is given to an outstanding woman who has a proven record of excellence in the automotive service industry, and the Woman of Excellence is the Women’s Board associate who has provided recent outstanding contributions to the auto care industry.
Auto Care Woman of the Year Jodi Kramer has been active in the industry for more than 25 years. After receiving her B.S. from Indiana State University, she entered the family business at United Marketing, and revived a sluggish automotive section for many major grocery and drug chains such as Rite Aid, CVS and SuperValu. She is also the founder of SHE4Life, a brand designed to help breast cancer patients and their families survive the financial, physical and mental burdens that accompany the diagnosis. A portion of the proceeds go directly to regional or local agencies and SHE4Life holds multiple successful events during the year. She also volunteers countless hours with Cancer Services in the Indiana area, and has been an active Women’s Board associate since 2011.

Bogi Lateiner is 100 percent owner of 180 Degrees Automotive Inc. and has been in the industry for seven years. She has grown her business from a one-person operation to a mostly female-staffed, million-dollar company without any advertising. Her shop is known for its unique design with a coffee-shop inspired waiting room, and is well-respected by her employees and customers. She serves as a host in her own TV show, “All Girls Garage,” and stays active in her community, including monthly car care classes. She is active in Ask Patty, Automotive Service Association and the Women’s Board.
Kathy Jorge has made an impact in the six years she has been in the auto care industry. She leads customer business planning and sales, and is considered an exceptional role model as an active member of the Delphi mentoring committee.

MEMA And AASA Partner With Federal Agencies To Safeguard Brands At AAPEX MEMA and AASA have a long history of partnering with federal enforcement agencies such as the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), Customs and Border Protection and the Department of Homeland Security to protect the intellectual property rights of automotive aftermarket suppliers and consumers from counterfeit motor vehicle parts. Association efforts have included education of enforcement agencies on the flow of motor vehicle parts and the markings that distinguish genuine parts. This partnership was in full force during AAPEX 2014. The National Intellectual Property Rights Coordination Center (IPR

Center) was an exhibitor at the event to showcase tools suppliers can use to prevent parts counterfeiting, and enforcement agents were available to answer questions or investigate complaints about counterfeit goods from AAPEX exhibiting companies. The Immigration and Customs Enforcement also introduced its public service announcement (PSA) about the safety hazards that counterfeit parts pose to the public during AAPEX. During AAPEX, MEMA and AASA worked with the IPR Center to close an exhibit that was displaying counterfeit grills and airbags. The exhibit was identified by an intellectual property investigator
for Hyundai, who saw the counterfeit airbag while touring the AAPEX show floor. The Hyundai representative notified the IPR Center, which then notified the MEMA intellectual property team on the show floor. Further investigations at the exhibit revealed counterfeit Hyundai, Toyota and Honda airbags and grills on display. FBI agents seized the goods and the exhibit was immediately shut down by AAPEX Show Management. MEMA and AASA will continue to develop and maintain these important relationships in order to help maintain the integrity of member company brands and the safety of the motoring public.
