Six wheel spec’ing considerations Proper spec’ing your vehicles’ wheels can be relatively simple and straight-forward by following a manufacturer’s recommendations to achieve the longest life and performance from your wheels. The experts at Maxion Wheels, the world’s largest manufacturer of lightweight steel wheels, suggest fleet equipment specifiers can make wheels a ‘non-issue’ if they’d follow these spec’ing considerations to achieve long wheel life: • Tire size and maximum air inflation • Loads to be carried – wheel-carrying capacity • Duty cycle – linehaul, off-road, delivery stop and start • Axle pound rating • Warranty – five-year coverage and availability nationwide • Field service support from your wheel supplier To keep wheels clean and provide long-life and performance, most fleets have wheels refurbished. It’s recommended that fleets closely review the vendor’s refurbishing pro-
cedures emphasizing proper inspection, cleaning and re-painting of the wheels. Two key details in refurbishment: controlling paint mil thickness in the mounting area of the disc face and ensuring paint is fully cured. Corrosion remains a concern for fleets operating in harsh service environments, particularly on roads treated for snow or ice. One option to combat this severe service situation is to specify wheels with premium paint finishes. “Pay attention to the basics,” said Maxion’s director of North American sales, Denny Weisend. “Proper spec’ing and maintenance will enable the wheels to last the life of the vehicle.” Maxion Wheels www.maxionwheelsandrims.com Booth #62196
Kenworth T680 Advantage package designed to maximize fuel economy Kenworth has unveiled the Kenworth T680 Advantage truck, which the company said effectively integrates aerodynamics, powertrain and electronic efficiencies combined into a complete tractor/trailer package to maximize fuel economy. “To gain the optimum in vehicle fuel economy, the trucking industry must view aerodynamics, powertrains, drivers and trailers in concert. They all must be integrated to maximize vehicle fuel efficiency,” said Kevin Baney, Kenworth chief engineer. “The T680 Advantages shows the industry what’s possible when you integrate the total vehicle.” A full-size Kenworth T680 Advantage tractor-trailer is available for viewing at MATS outside the South Wing of the Kentucky Fair & Exposition Center, while a tractor and partial trailer are on display in Kenworth’s booth #30305. The Kenworth T680 Advantage is equipped with a 12.9-liter PACCAR MX-13 engine. The T680 was selected as the Advantage vehicle since it already possesses a number of standard features that make it Kenworth’s most aerodynamic model ever, the truck maker said. The 2013 PACCAR MX-13 is estimated to be up to 3.5% more fuel-efficient than the previous 2010 PACCAR MX engine. The MX-13 engine is paired with an Eaton UltraShift Plus automated manual transmission to maximize fuel efficiency, the maker added. Other features include: instantaneous fuel economy feedback on the dash; an electronic speed limiter and engine idle shutdown software that goes hand-in-hand with the T680 Advantage’s Kenworth Idle Management System; and the Bendix Wingman Advanced System with adaptive cruise and SmarTire Tire Pressure Monitoring System. The trailer aerodynamics complement the aerodynamics of the T680—all the way down to details such as trailer height, tandem location and even trailer rake. “The Utility trailer we have attached to our T680 Advantage truck features a trailer nose fairing, side skirts and a trailer tail—all EPA SmartWay-verified,” Baney said. “Combined, they can provide a significant fuel economy improvement, which will vary depending on use, road conditions and other factors.” A Laydon nose fairing fills the gap between the tractor and front of the dry van, providing an estimated 3% fuel economy improvement. In addition, the package includes Utility side skirts,
which have been SAE-tested to provide a 5% improvement in fuel economy, and the ATDynamics TrailerTail, which has been tested to provide more than a 6% improvement in fuel economy when driven at typical freeway speeds, Kenworth said. Save fuel, tires with automated lift axle on SAF-Holland tandem axle slider suspensions SAF-Holland is now offering Auto-PosiLift Axle Lift technology as an option on SAF CBX40 Tandem Axle Slider Suspension systems. This combines the proven CBX PosiLift axle lift feature with a unique electronic control unit (ECU) and air valve system on a tandem slider suspension, blending the brain and the brawn to increase fleet efficiency, the maker said. The CBX40 with Auto-PosiLift was initially developed for multi-stop beverage distribution fleets; other varying load fleet operations such as LTL (Less Than Truck Load), fleets back hauling empty, and food service also may reap the benefits of significant fuel savings, reduced tire wear and reduced toll charges. The combination of the CBX PosiLift feature with the ECU and air valve system creates a lift axle with automatic operation that complies with D.O.T. regulations. The ECU is pre-programmed by the trailer OEM to sense the load weight and as the trailer load weight diminishes or increases, the system automatically raises or lowers the front axle of the tandem slider suspension without driver interaction, SAF-Holland said.

For example, as when a portion of the load has been delivered the total capacity of a closed tandem axle suspension may no longer be required to carry the remaining load. This lower load capacity can sometimes amount to nearly 80% of a vehicle’s operation during the day. Operating with the tandem suspension in the single axle configuration (front axle raised) greatly increases fuel efficiency, vehicle tire life, suspension component life and brake/wheel-end service intervals. Randy Flanagan, SAF-Holland Trailer Systems director of sales and marketing, said, “The integration of proven Auto-PosiLift technology on our highly competitive and industry leading SAF CBX40 Slider Suspensions is a major step forward in providing our varying load fleet customers with a unique systems solutions that not only enhances the competitive position of their operation, but offers additional driver safety and convenience features.” SAF CBX40 Tandem Axle Slider Suspensions with Auto-PosiLift technology are now available throughout North America from most Trailer OEMs. SAF-Holland www.safholland.us Booth: #34335

Aerodynamic products pay for themselves FlowBelow’s Tractor AeroKit offers the first solution for addressing the drag-intensive area around the wheels of the tractor tandem, the maker said. According to FlowBelow, parked trailers significantly delay any return on investment for their aerodynamic products. Because tractors typically log more miles than trailers, the Tractor AeroKit achieves best-in-class ROI. Independent SAE J1321 fuel consumption test results indicate that a typical long haul tractor equipped with the AeroKit can expect to save about $1,800 per year in fuel costs. FlowBelow claims that the cost of the AeroKit can be recovered in about nine months for the average long haul trucking fleet. Product highlights include: • Fast and easy installation — no drilling or welding required • Instant and tool-free access to wheels • Lightweight and durable construction • Available in black or chrome The Tractor AeroKit is on display at the FlowBelow booth. Bergstrom helps buyers understand BTU ratings Bergstrom Inc. said it wants consumers to understand BTU ratings and how they are calculated in order to empower buyers to make informed decisions when shopping for a noidle system. Ratings in the no-idle marketplace currently range from 3,000 BTUs to as high as 30,000 BTUs. These discrepancies arise because there is no governing body that sets and enforces an industry standard. As a result, some manufacturers manipulate and inflate BTU numbers to entice buyers to their products. To help bring clarity to BTU numbers, Bergstrom conducted independent no-idle tests. “Competitors don’t exhaust the same testing procedures and credentials we do at Bergstrom,” said Alan Leupold, director of testing and development for Bergstrom. “The BTUs we share with our consumers accurately display how they will perform when you are on the road. Our competitors’ numbers won’t hold up.” Bergstrom encourages consumers to ask manufacturers how BTU evaporators are rated. According to Bergstrom, if the manufacturer can’t provide an answer, chances are they have manipulated the numbers using one of these methods: • Increasing air inlet temperature • Manipulating refrigerant temperature • Using blower manufacturer’s airflow stats to measure capacity • Rating performance at maximum air temperature and humidity • Neglecting to show time unit of measurement Bergstrom said it wants to create an even playing field to help consumers make intelligent decisions when comparing air conditioning systems. ZF offers ‘New Generation Damper’ clutch concept ZF said it is presenting products at MATS that boost the energy efficiency in trucks. According to the company, the remarkable feature of the new NGD clutch concept (short for “New Generation Damper”) is its powerful torsional vibration damping. Its use is particularly efficient if Class 8 trucks are equipped with thrifty engines, which at low engine speeds can produce stronger torsional vibrations, damaging the driveline in the long run. Beginning this month, ZF has been producing the technology for the U.S. market in a newly opened production section at the ZF location in Gainesville, Ga. The clutch, with a 15.5 in. diameter, features high-power ZF torsional damper technology. It prevents engine-induced rotational irregularities which are transmitted via the clutch to the driveline. These torsional vibrations can cause a higher noise and vibration level in the vehicle and damage the driveline. Many commercial vehicle engines, however, produce higher torsional vibrations in the low speed range— a side effect of fuel-efficient engine design. The NGD technology from ZF has the main function of decoupling these vibrations. ZF supplies the clutches both with manual wear compensation and “Twin XTend NGD”—the latter with a clutch pressure plate that automatically compensates wear on the clutch plates. As is the case with all clutches from ZF, the NGD series is made of harder steel, and the design of the spring seats is robust in order to make them more durable, according to the company. MGM has announced e•Stroke Brake Monitoring for air disc brake applications. According to the company, by building on the success of its patented e•Stroke Brake Monitoring system for drum brakes, MGM has now expanded Electronic Brake Monitoring to heavy-duty air disc brake-equipped vehicles. Air Disc brakes are notoriously difficult to visually inspect, the company said. To discern proper function or to perform any diagnostic task requires wheel removal with the associated labor costs and downtime. e•Stroke for air disc brakes provides realtime insight into brake function and status, virtually performing a brake inspection with each brake application. Whether used as a stand-alone diagnostic and safety tool, or integrating with vehicle diagnostics, on-board recorders, and AVM devices, e•Stroke provides valuable feedback for maintenance by enhancing safety while potentially reducing downtime and labor diagnostic costs. Today’s safety and maintenance programs are mandated to find more efficient ways to perform needed maintenance. The system for heavy-duty air disc brakes provides maintenance operations and drivers a reliable and efficient way to be proactive in brake safety, the company added. Spectra Premium offers radiator for Freightliner Cascadia New for MATS (stop by booth #62144) are Spectra Freightliner Cascadia Series Radiators, which feature: • All-aluminum design • Heavy gauge tubes for superior overall strength • Redesigned mounting brackets for durability According to Spectra Premium, latemodel trucks are much more demanding on the cooling system. They operate at higher temperatures and pressures, requiring a more robust Charge Air Cooler. Traditional Tube and Fin CAC is a standard design for most OE units and is designed to fit the manufacturer’s cooling requirements. On heavier applications, premature failures such as tube to header leaks sometimes have been observed. The bar and plate design is usually a better option for newer trucks, as it can withstand superior heat variations, the company noted. The bar and plate consists of fins pressed between aluminum sheets and fitted with a header and face bar. This stacking is brazed together, creating a single solid piece in allowing the tanks to be welded directly to the core. The heavy gauge side bars and end caps are the reason behind this design’s strength and longevity. This stronger and more robust design will contribute in reducing costs associated with warranty returns and replacements, according to the maker. Spectra Premium www.spectrapremium.com Booth: #62144

WABCO showcases air disc brakes at MATS WABCO Holdings Inc., a global technology and tierone supplier to the commercial vehicle industry, announced at MATS that series production trucks from Daimler Trucks North America (DTNA) are now on the road and fitted with WABCO’s breakthrough MAXXUS heavy-duty single-piston air disc brake technology. As previously announced, WABCO entered into a long-term supply agreement with DTNA in June 2012. As a result, MAXXUS brakes have been fitted to DTNA’s range of vehicles since February 2013. MAXXUS is currently available on Freightliner Cascadia, Coronado, Columbia, Business Class M2 and SD models, as well as Western Star 4700, 4800 and 4900 platforms. “Daimler Trucks North America is one of the leading manufacturers of commercial vehicles in North America, and we are proud to supply them with WABCO’s MAXXUS air disc brakes, a game-changing generation of high performance, low weight braking technology that significantly increases vehicle safety and efficiency,” said Nikhil Varty, WABCO President, Americas. “MAXXUS, being specifically tailored for the local market, is yet another example of WABCO’s differentiation through technology leadership and a further demonstration of the company’s commitment to serve North American customers.” WABCO’s MAXXUS represents the lightest and highest performing single-piston air disc brake for North America’s commercial vehicle industry. Superbly engineered and compactly designed, MAXXUS is more than 40 lbs. lighter than a comparable air disc brake when fitted to a 6x4 truck, thus boosting fuel efficiency and enabling increased transport payload, the maker said. MAXXUS air disc brakes have been specifically designed for the North American market and are well within U.S. Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards for stopping distance, offering stable braking with virtually no fading and excellent downhill performance. In addition, an adaptor plate enables the MAXXUS air disc brake to be fitted to standard drum brake axles. The company’s latest innovation in air disc brakes also offers significant maintenance advantages over comparable drum brakes as service intervals are longer, resulting in less downtime, and brake pad changes take less than half the time of lining changes on drum brakes. MAXXUS is based on WABCO’s breakthrough MAXX 22 single-piston technology, pioneered in Europe. MAXX 22 brakes are the industry’s lightest and highest performing single-piston air disc brakes and have already been adopted by major globally operating makers of commercial trucks and buses. Cummins emission solutions EcoFit Liquid-only urea dosing system unveiled Following the acquisition of Hilite International’s Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) division in July 2012, Cummins Emission Solutions added the EcoFit UL2 Liquid-Only Urea Dosing System to its engineered-components portfolio. “The acquisition gave Cummins Emission Solutions the opportunity to quickly expand its portfolio of engineered components with a proven urea dosing technology,” said Zach Gillen, general manager—Engineered Components at Cummins Emission Solutions. “And we believe the combination of Cummins system integration expertise, coupled with Hilite’s SCR component expertise, will allow us to better serve customers throughout the world.” The challenges to urea dosing are surpassed by the system’s unique dosing nozzle strategy. The dosing nozzle provides improved oxides of nitrogen (NOx) conversion efficiency rates through urea droplet sizes unrivaled by those of competitive airless systems, the company said, adding that with droplet sizes comparable to those of airassisted systems, the likelihood of urea droplets in the Decomposition Reactor is significantly reduced. As the only liquid-only doser on the market offering freeze robustness, urea can remain in the system at all times, even during freeze events. Keeping urea in the system prevents crystallization and clogging, eliminates the need for power at key-off for purging, allows quicker dosing at key-on and prevents damage to the system during intentional or unintentional power interruption of the vehicle.
