Detroit Diesel Corp. celebrates 75th anniversary Detroit Diesel Corp. kicks off its 75th anniversary festivities at MATS with an interactive exhibit at its booth. The company is showcasing a selection of its most recent innovations, including the Detroit DT12 automated manual transmission.

The booth features a Detroit Diesel innovation timeline, product videos and the story of Detroit Diesel as told through the eyes of employees, retirees and customers. Three Detroit Axle displays, four different Detroit engines and a Virtual Technician also are on display. In addition, a virtual plant tour, an engine assembly challenge and special giveaways are planned.

Eaton, Cummins announce powertrain package for heavy-duty truck market Diversified industrial manufacturer Eaton and Cummins Inc. unveiled a new powertrain package for the North American heavy-duty truck market, which the companies said is expected to deliver 3% to 6% fuel economy improvements, lower preventative maintenance costs, and total lifecycle cost improvements. The new product integrates an Eaton Fuller Advantage Series automated transmission with new Cummins ISX15 SmartTorque2 ratings. The product will be available in the fall of 2013 for linehaul, regional haul and less-than-truckload applications.

Six wheel spec’ing considerations Proper spec’ing your vehicles’ wheels can be relatively simple and straight-forward by following a manufacturer’s recommendations to achieve the longest life and performance from your wheels.

cedures emphasizing proper inspection, cleaning and re-painting of the wheels. Two key details in refurbishment: controlling paint mil thickness in the mounting area of the disc face and ensuring paint is fully cured.

Corrosion remains a concern for fleets operating in harsh service environments, particularly on roads treated for snow or ice.

One option to combat this severe service situation is to specify wheels with premium paint finishes.

“Pay attention to the basics,” said Maxion’s director of North American sales, Denny Weisend.

“Proper spec’ing and maintenance will enable the wheels to last the life of the vehicle.”

Kenworth T680 Advantage package designed to maximize fuel economy Kenworth has unveiled the Kenworth T680 Advantage truck, which the company said effectively integrates aerodynamics, powertrain and electronic efficiencies combined into a complete tractor/trailer package to maximize fuel economy.

“To gain the optimum in vehicle fuel economy, the trucking industry must view aerodynamics, powertrains, drivers and trailers in concert. They all must be integrated to maximize vehicle fuel efficiency,” said Kevin Baney, Kenworth chief engineer. “The T680 Advantages shows the industry what’s possible when you integrate the total vehicle.”

A full-size Kenworth T680 Advantage tractor-trailer is available for viewing at MATS outside the South Wing of the Kentucky Fair & Exposition Center, while a tractor and partial trailer are on display in Kenworth’s booth #30305.

The Kenworth T680 Advantage is equipped with a 12.9-liter PACCAR MX-13 engine. The T680 was selected as the Advantage vehicle since it already possesses a number of standard features that make it Kenworth’s most aerodynamic model ever, the truck maker said. The 2013 PACCAR MX-13 is estimated to be up to 3.5% more fuel-efficient than the previous 2010 PACCAR MX engine. The MX-13 engine is paired with an Eaton UltraShift Plus automated manual transmission to maximize fuel efficiency, the maker added.

Other features include: instantaneous fuel economy feedback on the dash; an electronic speed limiter and engine idle shutdown software that goes hand-in-hand with the T680 Advantage’s Kenworth Idle Management System; and the Bendix Wingman Advanced System with adaptive cruise and SmarTire Tire Pressure Monitoring System.

The trailer aerodynamics complement the aerodynamics of the T680—all the way down to details such as trailer height, tandem location and even trailer rake. “The Utility trailer we have attached to our T680 Advantage truck features a trailer nose fairing, side skirts and a trailer tail—all EPA SmartWay-verified,” Baney said. “Combined, they can provide a significant fuel economy improvement, which will vary depending on use, road conditions and other factors.” A Laydon nose fairing fills the gap between the tractor and front of the dry van, providing an estimated 3% fuel economy improvement. In addition, the package includes Utility side skirts,

which have been SAE-tested to provide a 5% improvement in fuel economy, and the ATDynamics TrailerTail, which has been tested to provide more than a 6% improvement in fuel economy when driven at typical freeway speeds, Kenworth said.

Save fuel, tires with automated lift axle on SAF-Holland tandem axle slider suspensions SAF-Holland is now offering Auto-PosiLift Axle Lift technology as an option on SAF CBX40 Tandem Axle Slider Suspension systems. This combines the proven CBX PosiLift axle lift feature with a unique electronic control unit (ECU) and air valve system on a tandem slider suspension, blending the brain and the brawn to increase fleet efficiency, the maker said.

For example, as when a portion of the load has been delivered the total capacity of a closed tandem axle suspension may no longer be required to carry the remaining load. This lower load capacity can sometimes amount to nearly 80% of a vehicle’s operation during the day. In June 2002, Jennifer debuted in the ARCA RE/MAX Series at the Kansas Speedway, finishing a respectable 16th position. In just her second national race, she finished 9th on the lead lap at Kansas Speedway on June 5, 2004. This was Cobb’s first race with a new team and car. She went to Nashville Super Speedway for the first time on qualifying day and after only about an hour of practice, qualified 9th out of 45 drivers. This was Cobb’s first time on a concrete surface track, and she finished 7th on the lead lap out of 41 starters. Her success in the 2004 ARCA RE/MAX Series events led to an opportunity to make her NASCAR Busch Series debut at Homestead-Miami Speedway in November of 2004. Balance Masters awarded 5-year government contract Sun-Tech Innovations, creator of the Balance Masters self-adjusting wheel-balancing system, has been awarded a five-year contract by the U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) to maintain vehicles owned by the Department of Defense and other government agencies.

Bergstrom helps buyers understand BTU ratings Bergstrom Inc. said it wants consumers to understand BTU ratings and how they are calculated in order to empower buyers to make informed decisions when shopping for a noidle system.

Ratings in the no-idle marketplace currently range from 3,000 BTUs to as high as 30,000 BTUs. These discrepancies arise because there is no governing body that sets and enforces an industry standard. As a result, some manufacturers manipulate and inflate BTU numbers to entice buyers to their products.

To help bring clarity to BTU numbers, Bergstrom conducted independent no-idle tests. “Competitors don’t exhaust the same testing procedures and credentials we do at Bergstrom,” said Alan Leupold, director of testing and development for Bergstrom. “The BTUs we share with our consumers accurately display how they will perform when you are on the road. Our competitors’ numbers won’t hold up.”

Bergstrom encourages consumers to ask manufacturers how BTU evaporators are rated. According to Bergstrom, if the manufacturer can’t provide an answer, chances are they have manipulated the numbers using one of these methods: • Increasing air inlet temperature • Manipulating refrigerant temperature • Using blower manufacturer’s airflow stats to measure capacity • Rating performance at maximum air temperature and humidity • Neglecting to show time unit of measurement Bergstrom said it wants to create an even playing field to help consumers make intelligent decisions when comparing air conditioning systems.

CAT Scale launches App for Android Smartphones CAT Scale Co. said it has developed an application for Android smartphones that will allow drivers to weigh their truck without leaving the cab. The new Weigh My Truck application allows drivers to weigh their truck, pay for the transaction via PayPal and get the weights displayed right on their smartphone. The app also will email a PDF copy scale ticket or weight information text file to up to five email addresses the driver specifies. If drivers need a hard copy scale ticket, they can still pick up a printed CAT Scale ticket at the fuel desk within an hour after weighing using the Weigh My Truck application.

The new application is currently being tested and will be available to the trucking public in June.

ZF offers ‘New Generation Damper’ clutch concept ZF said it is presenting products at MATS that boost the energy efficiency in trucks.

According to the company, the remarkable feature of the new NGD clutch concept (short for “New Generation Damper”) is its powerful torsional vibration damping. Its use is particularly efficient if Class 8 trucks are equipped with thrifty engines, which at low engine speeds can produce stronger torsional vibrations, damaging the driveline in the long run.

Beginning this month, ZF has been producing the technology for the U.S. market in a newly opened production section at the ZF location in Gainesville, Ga. The clutch, with a 15.5 in. diameter, features high-power ZF torsional damper technology. It prevents engine-induced rotational irregularities which are transmitted via the clutch to the driveline. These torsional vibrations can cause a higher noise and vibration level in the vehicle and damage the driveline. Many commercial vehicle engines, however, produce higher torsional vibrations in the low speed range— a side effect of fuel-efficient engine design. The NGD technology from ZF has the main function of decoupling these vibrations.

ZF supplies the clutches both with manual wear compensation and “Twin XTend NGD”—the latter with a clutch pressure plate that automatically compensates wear on the clutch plates. As is the case with all clutches from ZF, the NGD series is made of harder steel, and the design of the spring seats is robust in order to make them more durable, according to the company.

Cummins emission solutions EcoFit Liquid-only urea dosing system unveiled Following the acquisition of Hilite International’s Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) division in July 2012, Cummins Emission Solutions added the EcoFit UL2 Liquid-Only Urea Dosing System to its engineered-components portfolio.

Rand McNally said it has begun selling its TND 760 EOBR/fleet management solution at retail locations. Travel Centers of America (TA)/Petro, a full-service travel center company in the U.S. serving the professional driver community, is the first retailer to carry the TND 760 devices in its stores. Additionally, TA will offer professional installation services for the devices at select locations. Launched one year ago to the commercial transportation market, Rand McNally’s TND 760 is a compliant EOBR and mobile fleet management device that seamlessly integrates with a truck’s on-board computer.

Those who purchase the TND 760 device at TA can then sign up for a service plan (starting at less than $20/month) at randmcnally.com/activation. Installation of the device can be done in less than 30 minutes by plugging it in with a single cable and using the suction mount included in the package. Or, those who prefer may opt to have their device installed at 20 select TA locations beginning April 1. Installation services will be available at most TA locations in the near future.
