EDITOR’SNOTES
Do You See a Theme Going Here?
O
ver the years, you may have noticed that TechShop follows a theme of fives. We bring you technicians’ Top 5 Tools every issue and the top five things to look for when buying a certain tool or piece of equipment. I’m not sure why we picked that number many years ago … maybe it’s a favorite number for me (my birthday falls on the fifth, I loved the Jackson 5…) or maybe it’s because readers are busy and they want things faster — “just give me the highlights.” Each issue of TechShop, the previously mentioned Top 5 Tools section features submissions from technicians who share what five tools help them most in the shop. In our December issues, we tally the votes and showcase the top-named companies. Perennial favorites are Mac Tools, Snap-on and Matco Tools, as well as GearWrench and Ingersoll Rand. See page 23 for this year’s winning companies. We will present each of them with a unique Top 5 Tool award. And to build on this theme, this year we’re highlighting the top five tools and equipment that were named. See pages 14-16. For this issue we’re taking the “five” theme even further. The TechShop team was recently in Las Vegas for the AAPEX and SEMA shows, so we thought we’d bring you what we thought were five of the most interesting items we saw at the shows. • SP Air’s pneumatic beveling machine (see page 30) has a three-blade cutting head that can cut straight and radius chamfers. • Chicago Pneumatic’s new line of cordless tools (see page 29) feature a high-performance battery with a runtime that’s two times higher than that of a standard lithium battery. • GearWrench spotlighted its new snap ring pliers (see page 16), dead blow hammers and a new and improved socket set. • Campbell Hausfeld highlighted its CH

Commercial Air Tools (see page 35) as well as the new FTC-60 impact wrench. • MAHLE Service Solutions announced its new TechPRO scan tool (see page 11), which includes J-2534 pass-thru capability. And a bonus one (since it won’t be available until early 2015, but is definitely worth mentioning): SK Hand Tool debuted its X-Frame ratcheting wrench (see page 30), with a completely reinvented ratcheting mechanism.
Second Annual Redline Rock Star Performance Award Also of awards note, at AAPEX, Redline Detection held a press conference announcing a call for nominations for the second Redline Rock Star Performance Award, which will recognize a rising technician for his (or her) commitment to his family, community and the industry. The winning technician will receive cash and prizes valued at $2,500. Additionally, the nominating individual will receive a prize valued at $250. Nominations are being accepted through Dec. 31 and can be submitted at http://redlinetech academy.com/nominate. The winner will be announced in January. Last year’s winner, Christian Opfer of SK Motorsport in Bellingham, WA, an ASE Certified Master Technician, was recognized for his extraordinary commitment to technical excellence and continued education in the field, as well as his community involvement. He was nominated by the owner of SK Motorsport, Steve Knowlton. TS

The Ghost of Code P0420 A Monitor Story
This article will document Diagnostic Trouble Code P0420 — Catalyst Efficiency Below Threshold. This code involves the integrity of the catalytic converter. This is a code that many have encountered, but once in a while you run across one that requires mention. This story begins based on a simple concept, the vehicle being tested is in an emissions state that requires all monitors on the vehicle to run and pass. Our subject vehicle is a 1998 Cadillac Eldorado. All monitors on the vehicle have run and passed except the catalyst monitor. The repair facilities in the area have advised the customer to keep driving the vehicle so that the enable criteria can be met and the monitor run. Once the criteria are met, the monitor can then run and hopefully pass. Figures 1 and 2 denote what was witnessed when the vehicle was scanned with a generic scan tool. The pictorials show that the MIL is not commanded on; all monitors have run except for the catalyst monitor. By this time, the Eldorado has been driven for well over a month.
Figure 2
A review of mode 6 data per our scan tool shows a concern toward the catalyst monitor. It appears it is run at idle on this vehicle. Figure 3 on page 8 shows the mode 6 data in reference to this vehicle. I decided to use one of the features of this scan tool — it has an option available to run a catalyst efficiency test at idle, but will not set a flag for the catalyst monitor. Our goal at this point is to get an opinion as to whether the catalytic converter is efficient or not. The catalyst test is run and it shows an efficiency rating of 39%; this is no doubt a failure status. Figure 4 shows the test results. It is interesting again to note that the catalyst monitor did not run on this vehicle, the question is “why not?” If a catalyst has degraded to the point where it no longer meets the compliance of OBD II standards, why did the monitor not run and fail this component? A little research is needed to answer this question. I

6,8 Pulling Codes 12/11/14 9:43 AM Page 8
PULLING CODES begin by going to a General Motors website that allows me to review limits for mode 6 data as well as failure criteria for this monitor based on year, make, model and engine family. The data shows a mode 6 range of -32.768 to +32.767 seconds. Our actual mode 6 data showed a value of +32.727 seconds. This was the reason for the red flag noted per the actual mode 6 Figure 3 data we reviewed for this vehicle.
Figure 4
Figure 5
I then proceeded to review failure criteria as well as time and frequency of this test. My review of failure criteria indicates that the system looks at “oxygen storage capacity” (OSC) to verify if the catalyst meets compliance, the table below denotes the data obtained. It is interesting to note that up to six tests per trip (EWMA) can be run in order to set the catalyst flag. OSC Time Difference (pass) Time and Frequency Greater than 0.12 seconds
questions answered. Figure 5 shows the catalyst data for this vehicle. A review of the catalyst data list shows one sample for EWMA. The test value needs to be greater than or equal to 0.12 seconds, but the actual test result was -0.03 seconds (failure). If the data was somewhat consistent in reference to these values, the catalyst monitor flag should at some point set and fail
Max of 6 tests per trip (EWMA)
I then decided to review scan data from a Tech 2 to see if it offered additional information in getting some

the monitor. A review of the emission test results two years prior shows that the catalyst monitor did not run at that time as well. It is the opinion of this observer that we should now check to see if any software updates may exist for this vehicle. A review of software calibrations shows that there is a reflash for catalyst response for our vehicle. The vehicle received a reflash and our goal was to allow the OBD II system to do its job, the monitor did run and fail. A code P0420 was stored in the controller’s memory. The catalytic converter was replaced with an OBD II-compliant converter and the monitor was rerun. The monitor then ran and passed. This Pulling Codes case is now solved. Potter succeeds Charlie Gorman, who became ETI’s executive manager in 2003 and led the company through many changes within the industry. Gorman is well known for his volunteer efforts to promote government/industry cooperatives as agencies seek to enforce and manage emissions legislation and regulations. Gorman will continue on at ETI for an interim period to ensure a seamless transition. “The board of directors sincerely appreciates his dedication and contributions over the years,” said Davis. TS

This allows for more strength and precision in any of the 216 positions the wrench offers. In fact, the new ratcheting mechanism is so strong that SK re-engineered the geometry of the handle to allow the technician to deliver maximum torque. SK Hand Tool Circle #68 for more information
