Eager aviators and wingless wonders will take to the skies again on May 3 … albeit briefly until a face full of water meets them to shatter their airborne dreams. Yes, one of the Kingdom’s favourite events of the year is back as the annual Birdman competition takes place at the British Club of Bahrain in Um Al Hassam. The competition is being organised by the Llongsteppers arm of the British Club, a popular members’ cycling group which organises entertaining events for charitable causes. Always an exceptional day out, the unique Birdman format traces its roots back to the UK where participants would jump off a pier in Brighton to see who could fly the furthest, and has been an annual staple of the British Club since 1994.
The Llongsteppers, comprising approximately 13 members, has a history of organising charitable endeavours. David Reid, the group’s Treasurer, explained: “We meet every few months and cycle around Bahrain socially, whilst also hosting events for charity. We recently held our annual Race Night and raised BD500 for the Migrant Workers Protection Society, and the Birdman promises to be even bigger as our flagship event.
“Birdman is one of the best days of the year; the costumes that are made, the laughter on the day and the fearlessness of the entrants never fails to astound me. Long may it continue and we always look forward to welcoming new aviators willing to take the plunge.
“We will be building a scaffold to jump off next to the British Club pool. It might not be as glamorous as Brighton but it’ll be a lot warmer! The competition is open to both children and adults, with participants encouraged to dress up in elaborate costumes. Prizes will be awarded for the longest jump as well as for the most creative fancy dress for both categories. We encourage everybody to dress as extravagantly as possible and of course, they can choose their own take-off music!”
Participants can register at the club from noon, with the first jump scheduled for 2pm. Attendees pay a nominal fee of BD1 to jump, and all proceeds will go to charity. The British Club will be open for all on the day and there will be Birdman merchandise on sale and raffles with a plethora of prizes.

REPRESENTING RUSSIA
The Kingdom of Bahrain and Russia will be celebrating 35 years of diplomatic relations in 2025. Recently, the Bahrain This Month team met with Russian Ambassador, HE Dr. Aleksey Skosyrev, who highlighted the cooperation between the two nations.
interview Bahrainthismonth.com 16 April 2024
YourExcellency, can you provide us with a detailed overview of your career up to this point and how you came to be appointed as the Russian Ambassador to Bahrain?
My journey in diplomacy began after I graduated from Moscow University in 1987. My first posting was to Iraq during the turbulent era of Saddam Hussein, where I witnessed the onset of the first Gulf War. Subsequently, I was stationed in Yemen during its unification war.
I then returned to Russia and I remember the Vice Minister saying: “Look, you’ve been to two wars, what do you want as a favour?” I said I wanted to go to Europe. So I was posted in Italy for three years, but there I felt a bit like a fish out of water, so I returned to the Middle East and never ran away. Since then, I took up a post in Washington before returning to Moscow as a Deputy Director of the Middle East Department. Finally, I ended up here in Bahrain as my first full ambassadorship a year and a half ago.
How would you describe the current state of relations between Russia and Bahrain as well as the broader GCC region?
I would say that we have remarkable relations in different spheres based on mutual understanding and respect. There are a lot of issues that we see eye-to-eye, especially with Russia and Bahrain calling for a more just and even multi-polar world order.
Both Manama and Moscow reject neo-colonial remnants, believe in traditional values and repulse those who are trying to impose a pseudo-universal neoliberal ideology. So, our political dialogue is very intense. Recently in March, there was a telephone conversation between President Putin and His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, and during the last year there were more than 50 exchanges of official delegations between the two countries.
Could you elaborate on the specific areas of economic collaboration between Bahrain and Russia, particularly in trade and investment?
The economic partnership between Bahrain and Russia encompasses a diverse range of sectors. Despite some objective challenges such as the COVID-19 pandemic, both countries are committed to enhancing bilateral trade and investment. Key areas of cooperation include agriculture, food industry, tourism and transportation. Efforts are underway to explore new avenues of collaboration and overcome existing barriers to trade. Furthermore, Gulf Air has just announced that further to daily flights to and from Moscow, the company will be adding a weekly flight to Sochi which is great news for our mutual tourism industries.
How does Russia view Bahrain’s position in the Middle East, and do you foresee further engagement between the two countries in this regard?
Bahrain occupies a strategic position in the Middle East, serving as a hub for trade and cultural exchange. Russia views Bahrain as a valued partner in promoting regional stability
and cooperation. There is immense potential for deeper engagement between our countries, particularly in areas such as infrastructure development, energy cooperation and cultural exchange. Both nations stand to benefit from closer collaboration in navigating the complex geopolitical landscape of the region.
What is Russia’s stance on the current security challenges facing the Middle East, and what initiatives is Russia undertaking to address these challenges?
Russia is deeply concerned about the security challenges confronting the Middle East, including conflicts, terrorism and instability. We believe in a diplomatic approach to resolving regional conflicts and have proposed initiatives aimed at fostering dialogue and cooperation among regional stakeholders. One such initiative is the Collective Security Council concept for the Gulf area, which seeks to enhance regional security through confidencebuilding measures and cooperative frameworks. With regard to the global energy market, how do you see Bahrain’s strategic position in the Gulf, particularly in relation to energy, and what opportunities exist for cooperation between Bahrain and Russia in this field?
Bahrain’s strategic location in the Gulf region, coupled with its focus on energy transition, presents significant opportunities for cooperation with Russia. Both countries have a shared interest in ensuring energy security and promoting sustainable development. Areas of potential collaboration include renewable energy, energy infrastructure and technology transfer. By leveraging each other’s strengths, Bahrain and Russia can contribute to the stability and growth of the global energy market.
What initiatives are currently in place to facilitate cross-cultural activities between Bahrain and Russia, and how do you envision enhancing cultural ties between the two countries?
Bahrain and Russia have a rich history of cultural cooperation, with initiatives ranging from art exhibitions to music festivals. Looking ahead, we aim to further strengthening of cultural ties through educational programmes, language exchanges and joint cultural events. By promoting cultural exchange, we can deepen the bonds of friendship and cooperation between our peoples.
In the last few years, we have witnessed many cultural events here in Bahrain and also in Russia. In December, there was the BahrainiRussian Cultural Forum and Museum Roadshow in Manama. Furthermore, it will be especially a great pleasure for me to watch Bahraini youth taking part in the World Youth Festival in Sochi this year, especially now with the aforementioned weekly flights facilitating easier travel.
In 2025, our countries will celebrate the 35th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations. In this regard, the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation plans to hold in
Bahrain a large-scale international project, ‘Russian Seasons’ which will include tours of outstanding theatres, symphony and jazz orchestras, opera soloists, exhibitions of major museums and more.
Regarding the Russian diaspora in Bahrain, how would you describe their contributions to Bahraini society, and what efforts are being made to support Russian citizens in Bahrain?
The Russian diaspora here plays a valuable role in contributing to the country’s social, economic and cultural life. Russian expatriates, of which there are approximately 600 registered in our consular section but number as many as 2000 including tourists and extended families, are engaged in various sectors, such as IT, technology, education, services and the arts. Efforts are underway to support them through cultural programmes, language courses and community events. By nurturing ties, we can strengthen peopleto-people connections and promote mutual understanding between Russia and Bahrain. What are your main priorities and objectives for furthering bilateral relations between Russia and Bahrain as we approach the 35th year of association next year?
As we look to 2025 and celebrating the 35th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Russia and Bahrain, my main priorities are to deepen political dialogue, expand economic cooperation and enhance cultural exchange. By building on the strong foundation of friendship and cooperation, we can unlock new opportunities for mutual benefit and prosperity. I look forward to working closely with our Bahraini partners to advance our shared goals and aspirations.
On a personal note, what have been the main challenges you’ve faced during your tenure in Bahrain, and how have you navigated them?
My main difficulty was bringing my cat to Bahrain! She is a beloved member of our family but Gulf Air does not let cats on board, just hawks and falcons. I would call for equality. On a more serious note, many would say the climate especially coming from Russia, but I have been in the region for so long that I am completely used to it and embrace it.
Is there anything else you’d like to add or any message you’d like to convey to the people of Bahrain?
I’d like to express my sincere gratitude to the people of Bahrain for their warm hospitality and friendship. The support and cooperation extended to the Russian Embassy and the Russian people here are deeply appreciated. As we look to the future, let us continue to strengthen our bonds of friendship and cooperation for the mutual benefit of our nations and peoples.

A BRUSH STROKE OF GENIUS!
Throughout Bahrain, few companies have made a vibrant splash quite like Jotun, with its colourful cans responsible for daubing the Kingdom’s buildings. Kristian Harrison sat down with Arun Menon, the Country Manager for Jotun in Bahrain, as he shared insights into a career painted with passion, discussed the company’s palette of achievements and explained why the future is a blank canvas.
Mr. Menon’s journey with Jotun began more than two decades ago, stemming from his roots in engineering and management in India. Graduating from Mumbai University, he embarked on a career path that would lead him to the colourful world of paints. “My first break was with a company called Kansai Nerolac, a prominent player in the Indian paint industry,” Mr. Menon reminisces. “In 2004, I ventured into the Middle East, starting my journey with Jotun in Dubai.”
Over the years, Mr. Menon has honed his skills across various sales roles within Jotun, culminating in his current position as Country Manager for Bahrain. His tenure has been marked by unwavering dedication to excellence, a trait reflected in Jotun’s formidable presence in the market.
For Jotun, innovation is not merely a buzzword but a way of life. “What sets Jotun apart is our relentless commitment to technological advancement and sustainability,” Mr. Menon states. Established nearly a century ago by a Norwegian whaling family, Jotun’s roots in marine coatings have evolved into a diverse portfolio encompassing four main categories: decorative, protective, marine and powder coatings.
This pioneering spirit stretches to the modern day, emanating from the company headquarters in Sandefjord, Norway and extending in broad strokes to its international branches.
“Jotun always aims to be the trendsetter in the industry. For example, when it comes to sustainability, we don’t believe in mere rhetoric,” Mr. Menon asserts. “Our products are backed by scientific rigour, ensuring that our claims align with tangible results. From zeroVOC emulsions to cutting-edge coatings, Jotun’s commitment to environmental responsibility resonates through every brushstroke.
“Furthermore, our Colour Trends collection is launched every year, keeping the innovation and trendsetting aspect in mind. Our global
team launches new shades every year inspired by nature and everything around us. For example, the 2024 collection, Canvas, is reflecting the beauty and nuances of nature’s own palette, and is designed to provide both aesthetic inspiration and practical insight.”
In a region teeming with competition, Jotun’s approach remains steadfast: focus on strengths and forge ahead. Mr. Menon explains: “We believe in charting our own course, guided by our core values of loyalty, care, respect and boldness. In fact, some people wonder why our logo is a penguin and that is because these animals embody everything about these values as resilient creatures in a harsh environment who stick together and bravely make their own path.”
With a team of approximately 35 dedicated professionals spanning diverse nationalities, colloquially dubbed ‘penguins’ within the company, Jotun’s Bahrain branch epitomises synergy and collaboration.
Always on the button with local trends, Jotun strives to inject a splash of vibrancy, offering a myriad of hues to adorn homes and structures alike in a region with a penchant for neutral tones.
Finally, Mr. Menon shares his vision for the future, buoyed by the wave of momentum Jotun has garnered in recent months. “Innovation will continue to be our guiding light,” he affirms. “Through strategic launches, proactive engagement and unwavering dedication, we aim to redefine the landscape of the paint industry. Colours may fade, but the legacy of excellence endures.”

LESSONS LEARNED
Education is undeniably one of the most powerful tools that one can be empowered with. In fact, Martin Luther King Jr. put it best when he said: “The function of education is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically. Intelligence plus character — that is the goal of true education.”
The Kingdom of Bahrain has been at the forefront of educational developments in the region for well over a century. Opportunities to educate the masses are supported in Bahrain and cover several aspects including early education, secondary education, higher education and vocational training in addition to unique on-the-job training for professionals.
This month, we shine a light on academic establishments and programmes in Bahrain that have contributed to the development of this vital sector.

PAVING THE WAY TO EXCELLENCE
In the classrooms and halls of St Christopher’s School Bahrain, a commitment to academic excellence and holistic development thrives under the leadership of Yasmine Dannawy, the Head of Senior School. With a passion for nurturing young minds and preparing them for the challenges of the modern world, Ms. Dannawy offers her insights into the school’s dynamic programmes and initiatives.
At St Christopher’s, academic rigour is intertwined with personalised pathways for success. The school offers the British National Curriculum, culminating in GCSEs for Year 10 and 11 students. As they progress into 6th form, pupils have the choice of three options; pursuing A Levels, a combination of A Levels and BTEC, or the IB programme.
“This comprehensive approach equips students with the knowledge and skills needed for success in higher education and beyond, with many securing scholarships and gaining admission to prestigious universities worldwide, including Ivy League and Oxbridge,” Ms. Dannawy explains.
Beyond academics, St Christopher’s Senior School boasts a vibrant array of extracurricular activities, with students having access to more than 65 sports teams, engaging in leagues across Bahrain. Additionally, the school offers diverse programmes in music, drama and the arts, allowing students to explore their passions and talents while complementing their academic pursuits. These activities foster teamwork, creativity and leadership skills, essential for their future endeavours.
St Christopher’s believes in the transformative power of experiential learning, and thus offers extensive overseas trips and exchange programmes, providing students with immersive experiences in service, culture
and STEAM disciplines. From conservation projects in Borneo to debating competitions at Yale University, these opportunities broaden students’ horizons, fostering global citizenship and empathy.
The school takes pride in recognising student achievements, from academic accolades to sporting triumphs. “Our students consistently excel, winning first place in various competitions and demonstrating exceptional talent in diverse fields,” Ms. Dannawy elaborates. “Furthermore, St Christopher’s prioritises student well-being through comprehensive support systems, including form teachers, guidance counselling and enrichment programmes focused on holistic development.
“In today’s rapidly evolving landscape, the school prepares students to navigate technological advancements and embrace global citizenship. Our curriculum integrates these elements across subjects, empowering students to think critically, adapt and thrive in a complex world. Through assemblies and school events, the community celebrates
diversity and encourages students to voice their perspectives, fostering a culture of inclusivity and empowerment.”
St Christopher’s fosters a strong partnership between school and home, welcoming parental involvement and engagement with an open-door policy, inviting parents to participate in workshops, meetings and initiatives aimed at enriching their child’s educational journey. This collaborative approach ensures that parents feel connected and supported in their child’s education and holistic development.
As the school continues to evolve, Ms. Dannawy envisions a future where every student thrives as a global citizen and leader. “Our rich and diverse community is built on the values of compassion, commitment, curiosity, creativity and courage,” she concludes. With a relentless focus on excellence and innovation, the school remains committed to empowering students to realise their full potential and make a positive impact on the world.

A LEADER OF EARLY LEARNING
Since being established in 2010, New Zing Kindergarten has been a guiding light for young learners in Bahrain. This month, we speak to its Director Rosemarie Abraham — a true icon in the education sector.
As the Director at New Zing Kindergarten, Rosemarie Abraham is dedicated to setting a clear vision, fostering strategic planning, team building, community engagement and continuous improvement in the establishment’s educational approach.
An icon in the education sector herself, she shares that her mother and aunt trained in Early Childhood education under Marie Montessori herself. “Continuing their legacy, inspiring my daughter and son, who assist me in managing our kindergarten both here and in India while serving over 100,000 children and positively impacting countless families over the last 40 years is an achievement that fills me with pride,” says Ms. Abraham warmly.
The kindergarten has contributed to the Kingdom’s educational landscape by integrating various educational philosophies, early childhood guidelines from nine countries and multiple learning theories while crafting its educational approach. “By staying up to
date we ensure our curriculum is comprehensive, emphasising equipping children with skills and values to thrive in a dynamic world,” she explains.
New Zing Kindergarten is equipped with age-appropriate teaching materials and diverse learning materials with an aim to provide a safe, nurturing environment for children to reach their full potential. Advanced safety measures, hygiene protocols, and transparent communication with parents and authorities ensure the safety and well-being of children.
Furthermore, the kindergarten fosters global citizens who respect and celebrate cultural diversity while honouring their own cultural heritage. “We celebrate Bahraini festivals, incorporate Arabic language and folklore, engage in arts and crafts activities inspired by
local traditions, and organise educational field trips to instil a deep appreciation for Bahrain’s rich culture and heritage,” she says. “Love is the cornerstone of our approach. Nurturing children with love fosters confidence, compassion, and resilience, setting us apart in our commitment to holistic development,” she concludes.

GET WELL SOON
A common misconception that most people have is that it is only medication that can better our health. While guidance from healthcare professionals is essential for our wellbeing, leading a healthy lifestyle goes hand-in-hand with this advice and is
With World Health Day taking place on April 7, we believe there’s no better time than now to prioritise our health. Bahrain This Month’s resident health buff, Edwin D’Souza, shares his easy-toincorporate lifestyle practices to improve your overall health.
paramount when it comes to maintaining good health and living a fulfilling life. Fortunately, there are numerous simple lifestyle practices that can significantly improve your overall well-being.
1. Increase Your Step Count for Cardiac Health
Walking is a low-impact exercise that can easily be incorporated into your daily routine. By increasing your step count each day, you can significantly improve your cardiovascular health. Studies have shown that regular brisk walking for at least 30 minutes a day can lower the risk of heart-related illnesses by up to 30 percent. According to several reports, walking boosts blood circulation, helps maintain healthy blood pressure levels, strengthens the heart, and reduces the risk of heart disease.
A great way to start is by being aware of your daily step count. There are several apps which can track your steps, or you can invest in a smart watch to do the same along with monitoring your heart rate. If you haven’t been walking in a while, there’s no need to be discouraged. A step count of under 5,000 is generally considered to be a sedentary lifestyle, so work to keep your step count over 5,000 with an overall aim of eventually building it up to 10,000 steps.
The fact of the matter is, you don’t have to wait to fall sick to make a change. Let’s explore eight easy-to-incorporate habits and their direct impact on various aspects of your health so you can ‘get well soon’.
2. Increase Water Intake for Improved Hydration
Staying hydrated is vital for overall health and well-being. Increasing your water intake can benefit your body in numerous ways. Water aids digestion, supports nutrient absorption, promotes healthy skin, regulates body temperature and helps remove waste from the body. Aim to drink at least eight to 10 glasses of water per day to maintain optimal hydration. By staying properly hydrated, you can improve organ function, enhance mental clarity and boost energy levels throughout the day. If you are someone who is always on the go, carry your water bottle along to stay hydrated.
3. Limit Highly Processed Foods
These days, we often find ourselves (unknowingly) consuming food that contains harmful ingredients. Highly processed foods, such as sugary snacks, fast food and processed meats, are often high in unhealthy fats, added sugars and sodium. These foods can increase the risk of obesity, heart disease and other chronic conditions. It is important to limit the consumption of these items in your weekly diet.
Moving towards nutrient-dense, whole foods like fruits, vegetables, whole grains and lean proteins helps you understand your meals better and keeps you aware of your food intake while providing your body with essential nutrients.
world health day Bahrainthismonth.com 34 April 2024
4. Prioritise Regular Exercise
Engaging in regular physical activity is crucial for maintaining good health. Exercise improves strength, flexibility, cardiovascular fitness and mental well-being. It reduces the risk of chronic diseases, boosts mood and supports weight management. Aim for at least 60 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise per day, such as jogging, cycling or dancing or any sort of sports that you enjoy.
The entire idea of getting a workout done is to enjoy what you’re doing and burn some calories at the same time. So, pick a fun activity with your friends, as by incorporating exercise into your routine you can increase muscle strength, improve bone density and enhance overall physical fitness.
7. Manage Stress Levels
Chronic stress can have detrimental effects on your health. Finding healthy ways to manage stress is essential. Chronic stress contributes to conditions such as high blood pressure, weakened immune function and mental health disorders. Practice relaxation techniques, such as deep breathing exercises, meditation or yoga. Engage in activities that bring you joy, such as hobbies, spending time with loved ones or engaging in creative outlets. By managing stress, you can improve emotional well-being, reduce the risk of stress-related ailments and lead a more balanced life.
5. Practice Mindful Eating
Mindful eating involves paying attention to the sensory experiences of eating, such as the taste, texture and aroma of food. It helps promote healthy eating habits, prevent overeating and improve digestion. Take your time to savour each bite, listen to your body’s hunger and fullness cues, and choose nutrient-rich foods that nourish your body. By practicing mindful eating, you can develop a healthier relationship with food, appreciate the flavours and make conscious choices that support your overall health.
Incorporating these easy lifestyle practices into your daily routine can have a profound positive impact on your overall health. Remember that these changes are incremental, and it is the collective impact of these practices that will lead to significant improvements. Start making small changes today and witness the positive impact they have on your overall well-being.
6. Get Sufficient Sleep
Quality sleep is essential for physical and mental health. Lack of sleep can lead to a range of health issues, including increased stress levels, impaired cognitive function, weakened immunity and weight gain. Aim for seven to nine hours of uninterrupted sleep per night. Create a calming sleep routine, such as avoiding electronic devices before bed, ensuring a comfortable sleeping environment and practicing relaxation techniques. By prioritising sleep, you can enhance memory, improve mood and boost overall well-being.
8. Cultivate Positive Relationships
Building strong, positive relationships is vital for mental and emotional well-being. Surround yourself with supportive friends, family and a strong social network. A major aspect in your relationships is your connection with your work environment. We don’t pay a lot of attention to the impact our work environment has on us in terms of relationships with the people we work with, always stay positive and have open ended discussions with your colleagues to promote a healthy work atmosphere. Positive relationships promote positive emotions, reduce stress levels, increased happiness, improved self-esteem and better overall mental health.
9. Create a Timetable
We all have a work timetable and we also had a timetable in our schools, why not one for our own health benefits?
Having a timetable for your daily plan and adding a simple hours’ time of workout can change a lot in your dayto-day life. A timetable helps in building structure around your day and helps you not to miss the small details in staying fit, for example; having a reminder to consume water at a certain time or eat a fruit at a certain time can help you build a habit until it is a part of your lifestyle. Taking time out of your day to stay fit is essential.

A Premier Destination
for Eye Care
In the Kingdom’s healthcare sector, few individuals stand out as prominently as Dr. Saad Al Khalifa, the esteemed Ophthalmologist in Chief at The Eye Infirmary in Seef.
With a career spanning more than two decades, Dr. Saad has dedicated himself to the pursuit of excellence in eye care. Ahead of opening a second branch in Janabiyah, he spoke to Bahrain This Month about The Eye Infirmary’s advanced services and commitment to leaving an indelible mark on Bahrain’s ophthalmology sector.
“We offer numerous services encompassing a wide spectrum of ophthalmic care, including comprehensive eye examinations to specialised treatments for medical and surgical retinal disorders, cornea and laser vision correction, glaucoma, Uveitis (intraocular inflammation), paediatric ophthalmology and eyelid, orbit, lacrimal system and cosmetic surgery.
Reflecting on his illustrious career, Dr. Saad Al Khalifa explains that his journey to mastering his field began as far back as 1992, where he began his Degree in Medicine at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, completing it in 1998. He then finished his Residency Training Programme in Ophthalmology at McGill University, Montreal, in 2004, before becoming certified by the Canadian Board of Ophthalmology and the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada in subsequent years.
His first major position in the Kingdom came in 2007 when he had the privilege of serving as a Consultant Ophthalmologist and Head of the Eye and Laser Centre at the Bahrain Defence Force Royal Medical Services, while also being a Senior Lecturer at RCSI Bahrain.
He truly found his calling, however, when he established The Eye Infirmary in April 2016, holding two fellowships, where he is the specialist of anterior segment, cornea, refractive, cataract surgery, medical retina and vitreoretinal surgeries. He explains: “I established The Eye Infirmary with a vision to provide comprehensive eye care services of the highest standard to the people of Bahrain.
“Ensuring optimal post-procedure care is paramount at The Eye Infirmary,” Dr. Saad emphasises. “The centre’s approach is to prioritise personalised care plans, regular follow-up appointments, patient education and accessibility to healthcare professionals to cater to all needs.”

AMAKING PROGRESS
April 2 is widely observed as Autism Awareness Day. Boardcertified Behaviour Analyst, Fifi Kiwan, enlightens us on some of the latest advancements in autism research.
utism Awareness Day serves as a vital platform to promote understanding, acceptance and support for individuals on the Autism Spectrum. With the rapid progress in autism research, this day plays an essential role in shedding light on the latest advancements in understanding autism, its causes and potential interventions. Let’s explore the significance of Autism Awareness Day and discuss some of the recent breakthroughs in autism research.
Understanding Autism
Autism, or Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), is a neurodevelopmental condition characterised by challenges in social interaction, communication difficulties and restrictive or repetitive behaviours. Autism affects individuals across a wide range, with varying degrees of severity. While the exact causes of autism remain unclear, research suggests a combination of genetic and environmental factors contribute to its development.
Autism Awareness Day
Autism Awareness Day, observed on April 2 each year, provides an opportunity to educate communities and promote acceptance and inclusion of individuals with autism. The day aims to dispel myths, reduce stigmatisation and emphasise the importance of early diagnosis and intervention. Through awareness campaigns, events and educational initiatives, Autism Awareness Day encourages society to create a more inclusive environment for individuals on the autism spectrum.
Recent years have witnessed significant advancements in autism research, enhancing our understanding of the condition and paving the way for improved interventions.
1. The Role of Genetics
One area of focus is genetics, as researchers have identified numerous genes associated with autism. This knowledge helps unravel the complex genetic architecture of autism and may aid in the development of personalised treatments.
2. Early Detection and Intervention
Another exciting area of research is early detection and intervention. Studies have highlighted the benefits of early diagnosis, allowing for timely interventions that can improve developmental outcomes. Early intervention programmes, such as Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA) and speech therapy, have shown promising results in enhancing
communication skills, social interactions and adaptive behaviours.
3. Technological Advancements
Advancements in brain imaging techniques, such as functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), have provided insights into the neural mechanisms underlying autism. These studies have revealed differences in brain connectivity and activity patterns in individuals with autism, contributing to our understanding of the condition’s neurobiology.
4. Environmental, Prenatal and Perinatal Factors
Furthermore, research is exploring the role of environmental factors in autism development. Investigations into prenatal and perinatal factors, such as maternal immune system activation and exposure to certain chemicals, may provide valuable insights into potential causes and risk factors.
Most importantly, Autism Awareness Day serves as a catalyst for promoting understanding, acceptance, and support for individuals on the autism spectrum. The advancements in autism research have yielded crucial insights into the condition’s causes, early detection and interventions. Genetic studies, early intervention programmes, brain imaging techniques and investigations into environmental factors have significantly contributed to our understanding of autism. With continued research, collaboration, and awareness, we can foster a society that embraces and supports individuals with autism, empowering them to lead fulfilling lives and reach their full potential.

AN OUT-OF-THIS-WORLD FOOD CRAWL
Nestled within the bustling streets of Bahrain Souq lies a culinary treasure trove awaiting discovery. Led by their friendly guide, Yusuf Bukhammas of the Pinkalien company, Kristian Harrison and other members of the Bahrain This Month team embarked on a gastronomic journey through the heart of Manama, immersing themselves in the rich flavours and aromas of Bahraini cuisine.
Assoon as we arrived at Bab Al Bahrain and saw Yusuf in his bright pink jumper with a hearty smile and an eagerness to take us on a hidden trail, we knew this would be a dining experience to remember. From savoury delights to delectable sweets, each stop along the tour promised a tantalising experience that left an indelible mark on my palate.
Our first destination, Baba Taher, welcomed us with open arms and a spread that promised to awaken our taste buds. As we settled into the cosy ambience upstairs, we were presented with a delightful array of traditional Bahraini fare. The Chickpeas spiced to perfection offered a wholesome and flavourful start, setting the stage for what was to come. The Special Omelette, generously stuffed with cream cheese, melted in my mouth with each bite. Accompanied by the rich flavours of Foul, an enticing blend of fava beans, tomato and sesame sauce, and Bahraini bread adorned with sesame seeds, this was a culinary symphony. The pairing of cheese and bread provided a comforting contrast of textures, while the aromatic Karak Tea, one of my favourite local
staples, served as the perfect accompaniment, warming both body and soul.
Next on our itinerary was Showaiter Sweets, a veritable haven for those with a sweet tooth. Here, we indulged in the pleasures of Bahraini Halwa, the traditional dish popular during Eid and other celebrations. We tried two types, the more traditional red one with pistachio sprinkled on top, and the golden Halwa with syrup which somehow was even sweeter. Paired with Arabic coffee (Gahwa), its rich and robust flavour profile complemented the sweetness of the halwa perfectly.
Our culinary odyssey continued, winding past clothing stores, jewellery outlets and souvenir shops, with a visit to Manama Sweets. Here, we were introduced to the vibrant and colourful world of Indian cuisine. More specifically, the Dahi Puri, a beloved Indian street food delicacy originating from Mumbai, which dazzled with its explosive combination of flavour and unique texture. Each bite was a tangible crunch filled with tangy yogurt, savoury chutneys and aromatic spices, creating a sensory experience like no other.
Our final stop at Heritage Village Restaurant was a fitting finale. Here, amidst the rustic charm of traditional Bahraini decor, we sampled an exquisite selection of dishes including cheese and bread drizzled with golden honey, offering a delightful balance of sweet and savoury notes. The rose milk Sharbat, affectionately dubbed the ‘Pinkalien Drink,’ was a refreshing revelation, while finally, the Bahraini dessert Balaleet, was an interesting mix of flavours with sweet noodles topped with an omlette.
This was certainly a dining experience like no other I’d done before, and we were extremely grateful to Yusuf for his expert knowledge and guiding hand. Pinkalien offers numerous tours, not just in the Souq, but all around Bahrain, so if you’re interested in your own gastronomic adventure then check out www.pinkalien.me or Instagram @pafoodtours.

20 Years of RACING in Bahrain!
The Bahrain International Circuit (BIC), renowned as The Home of Motorsport in the Middle East, celebrated a monumental milestone with its 20th Anniversary Bahrain Grand Prix, culminating in a weekend of unparalleled racing and entertainment that captivated a record sell-out crowd.
Drawing in a staggering 37,000 spectators on race day alone, surpassing the previous year’s attendance of 36,000, the historic event marked the highest singleday turnout in the race’s history. The fervour surrounding the Grand Prix extended beyond borders, with a total of 100,000 racing enthusiasts converging at the circuit over the course of the weekend, eclipsing the 99,500 attendance figure from the previous year.
Notably, the event also attracted more than 11,000 international fans, setting yet another record and underscoring its global appeal.
Under the spectacular, gleaming lights of the Bahrain International Circuit, the atmosphere reached fever pitch as Dutchman Max Verstappen stormed to victory in Sakhir. The three-time defending drivers’ world champion started from pole and dominated the 57-lap event, celebrating 20 Years of a Modern Classic as the first-ever F1 Saturday night race in Bahrain.
As a spectacular fireworks display dotted the night sky, Verstappen crossed the finish line with a 22-second gap, leading Red Bull teammate Sergio Perez to a sensational onetwo. They were joined on the podium by Carlos Sainz of Ferrari.
Away from the on-track action, the event saw the widest raft of entertainment programmes yet. The incredible line-up of colourful attractions included live performances by superstar artists, stage shows featuring worldrenowned cartoon characters, daring circus acts, thrilling carnival rides, lively roaming performers and much more.
The weekend was headlined by global superstar DJ and producer Diplo, who wowed audiences as they danced the night away in the post-race concert.
Reflecting on the triumphant event, Arif Rahimi, Chairman of Bahrain International Circuit, conveyed his heartfelt congratulations to Max Verstappen on his remarkable win, which
served as a fitting tribute to the circuit’s twodecade legacy in Formula 1.
“The race weekend has offered a fitting tribute to our 20 years in Formula 1,” Mr. Rahimi remarked. “The success of the event acknowledges the enduring popularity of the sport in Bahrain, the wider region and beyond. It is an exciting prospect to witness the growth and development of the event in the years to come, buoyed by the overwhelming support and enthusiasm of our fans. Already, thousands of early bird tickets have been purchased for our race in 2025.
“We can’t wait for next year!”
As the curtain fell on the 20th Anniversary Bahrain Grand Prix, it became clear that the event had not only showcased the pinnacle of motorsport excellence but had also underscored Bahrain’s position as a premier destination for international sporting events, promising an exhilarating future for Formula 1 enthusiasts worldwide.

FORZA FERRARI!
Ferrari stands as an enduring symbol of Italian passion, precision and performance. With each new release, the Maranello marque pushes the boundaries of engineering and design, captivating enthusiasts and aficionados alike. During a recent trip to Dubai, Kristian Harrison experienced two of Ferrari’s latest creations first-hand: the new Roma Spider and Purosangue, courtesy of Euro Motors Ferrari Bahrain.
Revving up two of Ferrari’s latest marvels, the Roma Spider and Purosangue, felt like stepping into the motoring version of Willy Wonka’s Chocolate Factory. Everywhere I looked, I was captivated by a sound, a design quirk or a luxury flourish that made me feel like I had won the golden ticket to petrolfuelled paradise.
First up was the Roma Spider, a convertible wonder that marries elegance with exhilaration. Slipping into the driver’s seat, I was greeted by a cockpit that oozed sophistication, like a swanky Italian lounge on wheels.
I was immediately enveloped in an atmosphere
of luxury and sophistication. The cabin exudes craftsmanship, with sumptuous leather upholstery (the terracotta in my model was a fine touch!), carbon fibre accents and intuitive technology at every touchpoint. The drivercentric cockpit places all controls within easy reach, emphasising the Roma Spider’s focus on the art of driving.
In fact, the centre console is reserved for little more than climate control, navigation and audio, with almost all buttons and toggles consigned to the wheel. That includes the ignition, which is a touch button to spur the Roma Spider into life with a purr that quickly escalates into a symphony of roaring cylinders. Thereafter, the thrill of 612 horsepower at my
command was like being handed the keys to a rocket disguised as a sports car.
Zooming through twisty roads and long highways alike, the Roma Spider danced with the agility of a ballerina, gracefully pirouetting through every corner. Its chassis is finely tuned, delivering precise handling and exceptional agility through every twist and turn, leaving me with the sense of conducting an orchestra of rubber and asphalt.
But don’t be fooled by its elegance; the Roma Spider is a party animal at heart. Switching into Sport mode unleashed its inner beast, transforming the serene cruiser into a firebreathing dragon.
motoring Bahrainthismonth.com 50 April 2024
Next on the agenda was the Purosangue, which represents Ferrari’s bold foray into a high-performance four-door utility vehicle. As soon as I opened the door, however, all of the doubts and questions just melted away. In contrast to the Roma Spider’s refined elegance, the Purosangue commands attention with its muscular stance and commanding presence. Yet, beneath its rugged exterior lies the soul of a thoroughbred, ready to unleash unparalleled performance at a moment’s notice.
The Purosangue’s spacious and meticulously crafted interior has room for four people and blends opulent comfort with cutting-edge technology. Supple leather adorns every surface, while brushed aluminium and carbon fibre accents add a touch of contemporary flair. Despite its SUV proportions, the driver’s seat offers a commanding view of the road ahead, instilling confidence and authority behind the wheel.
Firing up the engine, the Purosangue roars to life with a primal growl, courtesy of its potent powertrain – a glorious V12 engine delivering a staggering 715 horsepower. With such prodigious output, the Purosangue accelerates with relentless force. Yet, it’s not just straightline speed where the Purosangue excels; its sophisticated four-wheel-drive system and adaptive suspension ensure unparalleled agility and stability, even in the most challenging driving conditions.
Taking it off-road (or as off-road as a Ferrari can go), the Purosangue proved surprisingly
capable. Sure, it wasn’t designed for mud-slinging like a traditional 4x4, but it handled itself with confidence.
Speaking of brave ideas, the Purosangue completely forgoes ‘normal’ SatNav and instead makes it usable only with Apple CarPlay or Android Auto. Let’s face it –in-car satellite navigation options tend to be outdated very quickly and operate much slower and less efficiently than the ones on our phones, so it’s good to see such an esteemed brand take the courageous step into the future. But perhaps the most remarkable aspect of the Purosangue is its ability to blend practicality with performance. With ample cargo space and comfortable seating for four, it caters to the needs of both thrillseekers and families alike. Yet, true to its Ferrari lineage, the Purosangue never compromises on driving dynamics or excitement, delivering an exhilarating experience that transcends traditional norms.
Ultimately, with the Roma Spider and Purosangue, the joy of driving comes in spades. Whether you’re cruising along the highway with the wind in your hair or ferrying the family along city streets, these Italian stallions deliver a fun-filled fiesta that’s impossible to resist.

START-UP ECOSYSTEM
Why It’s So Important
For a long time now, some of the most often heard phrases are ‘start-up’ and ‘start-up ecosystem’. A robust start-up ecosystem is a clear sign of progress and development. Every country wants to promote and develop this apparently key component of economic development. Have you ever wondered why this is? Also, what exactly does it all comprise? If you have been curious about this, hopefully, this month, I can answer some questions.
What is this start up ecosystem everyone talks of?
Very simply, a system, is a series of processes that ensure that a desired output is achieved. For any business, this roughly boils down to a series of very critical sub-businesses. The first of course is the lifeblood – money. This has three broad stages that intermingle. First, the core funding, the sources of money that will allow the business to begin, to procure the basics like an office space, computers, basic equipment, license costs etc. This usually includes operating expenses for a year or until revenue starts to come in. Second, the operational money or the money that comes from revenues. Finally, we have the payments due to vendors or suppliers, staff, etc. Any software, technology or process that eases this flow of money to any entity, that is a key part of the ecosystem of the business.
Let’s expand this idea, to suppliers, to vendors, to how goods are transported, disturbed, stored. The logistics chain, the warehouse facilities. The list also includes human resources who can provide the skills needed for that specific business.
What makes the startup ecosystem so important?
Startups operate on very thin or even no margins initially. This means that every single cost adds up. It also means that the lack of any one prong of support, or if any single prong is
even marginally more expensive than planned, the business can be derailed. A well-planned startup plans for unit economics. And for this, everything adds up. The fuel consumed for every delivery, the salary of each driver, the fees shared with the payment system being used (visa, Mastercard, Tap, Benefit, etc.), the fees payable (if any) to app hosting platforms. The list is long and a bit daunting. The daunting part is because if a certain threshold for any component is breached, the unit economics and sometimes big picture economics, can get impacted quite adversely. The system needs to work coherently – almost all of it – for the business to succeed
Why is the startup ecosystem so important to a country or an economy?
The answer lies in volumes, systemic indicators and growth potential. When a country has volumes for a particular product, a lot of businesses can break even. Services can be provided easily. However, for the same systems to be able to provide margin efficient services, to small or very small players, that indicates a far deeper strength. Complimentary to
In last month’s edition of Bahrain This Month, Business Consultant
Pria Masson shared her tips for your startup’s success. Here are her thoughts on why the start-up ecosystem is important.
this, for the services to be able to provide to small players, they must be able to access funds and have clients. This is an intricate interplay between interest rates, returns and economic indicators. The result is a system healthy enough to cater to the lowest (almost) paying or performing players. Finally, a very miniscule percentage of startups turn into large businesses, I am not speaking of unicorns here (1bn+ valuations), but just companies large enough to become SME’s or MSME’s. A robust startup ecosystem improves those odds significantly, which, has an upward impact on the economy.
The beauty of a system is that it feeds itself often. For startups to succeed, they usually rely on other startups, and they work in a delicate balance in tandem. Whatever the format, the startup ecosystem indicates entrepreneurship ability, a healthy risk appetite and belief in the economy. That’s strength at a whole different level.

Ariana Grande Eternal Sunshine
Verdict:
Another bright spot for the pop superstar.
What’s the story?
Eternal Sunshine is the seventh studio album by American singer Ariana Grande. It is a pop and R&B album with dance music influences, particularly synth-pop and house, characterised by mid-tempo synthesisers, subtle guitar and string elements. Grande derived the album title from the 2004 romance film Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and conceived the album inspired by her personal life experiences.
Worth a listen?
Mostly a response to the headline-grabbing details of her relationships, the album takes listeners through the dissolution of one union (which ended in divorce) and the slow healing that was aided along by the sparks of another (which generated controversy too). The bulk of the lyrics are a direct reference to the drama, with Grande taking the high road with poise and class, while leaning into any negative perceptions with a wink and some sass. Those tabloid-fodder moments (like ‘The Boy Is Mine’ and ‘True Story’) add some fuel to the flames; however, Grande makes a concerted effort to maintain focus on personal growth through introspection on tracks like ‘I Wish I Hated You’ and ‘Don’t Wanna Break Up Again’.
Norah Jones Visions
Norah Jones named her eighth proper studio set Visions because many of the musical ideas occurred to her in the middle of the night, right when her consciousness was hazy: they weren’t fully realised so much as an apparition. That sense of dreaminess carries through to the finished product as it glides between modulated soul jams, languid ballads and hopeful pop tunes, each enlivened by flair that’s felt more than heard.
Jennifer Lopez
This Is Me…Now
A sequel two decades in the making, This Is Me…Now finds Jennifer Lopez returning to the territory she first explored on This Is Me…Then: namely, grappling with the strong emotions generated by her relationship with Ben Affleck. Lopez wrote and recorded This Is Me…Then while in the throes of her romance with the actor, releasing the album in November 2002 at what turned out to be roughly the midpoint of their initial union. By early 2004, their engagement was severed. The next two decades were filled with high-profile love affairs by both parties – they each started families with subsequent spouses – but the pair reconnected in 2021, leading to marriage in July 2022. This Is Me…Now chronicles this rekindling, and in no small way: the record is accompanied by a full-length film featuring a music video for each of the album’s 13 songs, plus there’s a documentary called ‘The Greatest Love Story Never Told,’ which borrows its name from a series of love letters written by Affleck to Lopez.
MGMT
Loss of Life
Their fifth studio album, Loss of Life, finds MGMT regaining their balance and evenly distributing the strange and the accessible across a set of songs that explore alien interpretations of soft rock, synth pop epics and the kind of psychedelic wonderment that has long been the centre of the band’s craft. Loss of Life is restrained for MGMT’s track record, still managing to express personality and abstract thinking (musical and lyrical) while keeping huge melodies in the forefront. It’s not a return to form, a return to pop, or really a return of any kind, just a continuation of the band’s blissfully weird frames of mind and a record that includes some of their strongest songs in years.

Tom Oldaker is a talented, dynamic football coach who is carving out a new career as a popular children’s author. After stints in his native UK, Australia and India, it was his time in Bahrain which really set him on the creative path. Kristian Harrison spoke to him to find out more about how the Kingdom inspired his first book, The Adventures of Alex the Pirate: Treasure Island, and his plans to write more stories in the future.
The Adventures of Alex
by Tom Oldaker
“Writing a book is not something I had ever intended to do!” Mr. Oldaker exclaims. “The idea was more spontaneous based on my experiences as a football coach. The concept of using animation and storytelling when delivering coaching sessions started while working for Little Kickers in the UK but developed and became more refined during my stint in Bahrain.
“This snowballed during my time working for Tekkers Academy in Bahrain. Part of my role involved taking sessions for the tots and U6 classes and I had to find ways to maintain engagement for long periods. Tekkers used a weekly theme which allowed coaches to animate the games and bring them to life which provided more meaning to each game.”
Mr. Oldaker quickly realised that engagement was much stronger if children were asked, for example, to follow a space theme and fly their spaceships through Outer Space rather than just dribble the ball around cones. Similarly, during pirate week, children were pretending to sail their ‘pirate ships’ across the pitch and collect their bounty – cones – and thus, Alex the Pirate was born.
“Seeing how successful these sessions were, I decided that writing a book linked to coaching would be a great way to encourage children to read more and become active,” Mr. Oldaker states. “I did some research and found a
publisher called Rowanvale Books who allowed me to self-publish the story. I also had an amazing illustrator called Chrissie Yeomans who was amazing at bringing my visions to life.”
Key to The Adventures of Alex’s success is that it appeals to children of all ages, not just the youngest ones. Whilst ostensibly aimed at children ages two to seven, the games are merely a guide and can be modified to suit the age, ability and number of children present. Mr. Oldaker himself has performed them to both a class of 30 beginners in a PE lesson and highperforming academy players alike. The book combines learning through reading and physical, technical, psychological and social development through games. The book is multi-purpose and can be used as a PE lesson, coaching session or as a book read at home between child and parent and then playing the games in the backyard where they can let their imaginations run free.
Mr. Oldaker’s journey does not stop here either. His next career step is taking up a coaching position with the Singapore Football Association, but he will also be publishing his second book, The Adventures of Alex the Astronaut: Alien Invasion , and he has an entire series planned out to cover more of Alex’s escapades.
to purchase the book is via Amazon, which also delivers to Bahrain”, Mr. Oldaker concludes. “People can also follow my Instagram account @tomoldaker, as I provide content on how to modify the games to suit the age, ability and number of children. I look forward to bringing you more of The Adventures of Alex in the near future!”

DRAGON’S DOGMA 2
Dragon’s Dogma 2 is an action role-playing game played from a third-person perspective. In the game, the player takes on the role of a character called the Arisen, a hero marked by a dragon who they must defeat, all while exploring the world they live in, taking on quests and fighting monsters, in the process being caught up in a geopolitical conflict between two kingdoms. To assist in this, the Arisen relies on allies called Pawns, nonplayable characters who join the player’s party – these characters are AI-controlled, but function like player-controlled avatars, able to assist in fights, provide information on enemies and give guidance to currently active quests.
WHAT IS IT?
WWE 2K24 is a professional wrestling sports video game developed by Visual Concepts and published by 2K. To celebrate WrestleMania 40 taking place this month, the 2K Showcase mode, ‘Showcase... of the Immortals’ is themed around notable matches from the history of WrestleMania, including recreations of their respective venues (such as SoFi Stadium for WrestleMania 39). It incorporates archive footage mixed into gameplay, and also features segments narrated by Cody Rhodes.
GAMEPLAY
Like its predecessor, WWE 2K24 features arcade and simulation wrestling gameplay. Several gimmick matches have returned to the franchise, such as ambulance, casket, gauntlet and special guest referee matches. The Backstage Brawl mode was updated with a larger variety of weapons and four-player multiplayer. New combat features include Super Finishers – which allows players to use all three of their finisher charges at once to perform a higherpowered move, the ability to dive onto groups of opponents, and new types of objects as weapons such as microphones and trash cans.
GRAPHICS
It doesn’t take long to see that the title for Best Looking Wrestling Game is still locked firmly in the hands of the 2K series. There are far fewer wrestlers that have outdated gimmicks this time around, and besides a couple of noticeable exceptions, all of the top stars look just like their real-life counterparts, from their signature hair dos to the details of their gear and tattoos. Referees even resemble the ones you can see on weekly television instead of just generic stand-ins.

Up to 64 players can battle it out in classic Star Wars locations with iconic characters from the movies that defined a generation. UPHOLDING BAHRAIN’S FOOD SAFETY
When it comes to food safety, ensuring the integrity of imported food products is paramount to safeguarding public health. Within the Ministry of Health in Bahrain, Nujood Khalifa Almuqahwi stands at the forefront of this crucial endeavour as the Head of Imported Food Safety. In this exclusive interview with WomanThis Month , she shares insights into her career journey, the Ministry’s overarching strategies for ensuring food safety, approaches to risk assessment, leveraging technology for monitoring and more
Ms. Almuqahwi’s career in the Ministry of Health began in 2007, starting as a health inspector and gradually progressing through various roles until she assumed her current position in 2014. Reflecting on her journey, she says: “My career path has been shaped by a blend of education, practical experience, advocacy and a genuine desire to contribute to the well-being of communities. My educational background includes a degree in Biology from the University of Bahrain, which laid the groundwork for my understanding of microbiology, biochemistry and epidemiology. I then achieved a Master’s in food safety and quality management from the UK, the specialised knowledge of which allowed me to delve into areas such as health policy, food science and food quality. To this day, a mixture of continuous learning and practical experience is vital to professional development.”
The Ministry of Health employs a range of strategies to ensure the safety of imported food products in Bahrain. Ms. Almuqahwi explains: “Given that approximately 90 percent of food in Bahrain is imported, these measures are crucial for maintaining high standards and minimising health risks.” These strategies include risk-based inspection services, public awareness campaigns, strengthening food safety management systems and fostering public-private partnerships.
enhance safety, and build consumer trust. Ultimately, by leveraging technology, Bahrain can stay ahead of emerging food safety challenges and protect public health.”
Transparency in the supply chain is essential for maintaining consumer trust and ensuring the safety of imported food items. As such, the Ministry of Health enacts measures such as clear labelling, quality assurance practices and supply chain traceability to help enhance transparency. By collaborating with suppliers and third-party certifiers, Bahrain ensures accountability and reduces the risk of food fraud or adulteration.
“ Transparency in the supply chain is essential for maintaining consumer trust and ensuring the safety of imported food items.”
Of course, food safety incidents do happen on occasion, but the Ministry has protocols in place to both minimise and combat them. According to Ms. Almuqahwi, multi-agency coordination, issuing alerts and recalls, and swift action to remove unsafe products from the market is the priority. “Our goal is to protect public health and minimise the impact of emergencies related to food safety,” she says. “By coordinating with other agencies and stakeholders, Bahrain can effectively address food safety incidents and prevent further harm to consumers.”
channels. “Prevention is key to ensuring the safety of imported food products,” she asserts. “By implementing preventive measures, Bahrain can proactively address potential risks and protect public health.”
In the face of emerging challenges in the global food market such as increased globalisation, climate change and food fraud, collaborative efforts and innovative solutions are required to tackle them. By strengthening international cooperation, adapting to environmental changes and enhancing consumer awareness, Bahrain can effectively address emerging food safety challenges and ensure the safety of imported food products.
Ms. Almuqahwi also encourages consumers to report food safety violations or concerns through hotline numbers, the Tawasul government website and the Tawasul SuperApp which serves as a communication app. “Consumer feedback is crucial for identifying potential risks and taking appropriate actions,” she says. “By actively engaging with consumers, Bahrain and the ministry can address food safety issues promptly and maintain public trust in its food safety regulations.”
All of these methods are in line with the ministry’s commitment to adhering to GCC and international standards to uphold food safety. Furthermore, the ministry’s collaboration with international food safety agencies and organisations such as the Codex Alimentarius Commission, WHO, INFOSAN and the GCC Standardisation Organisation allows it to harmonise standards, share information and enhance global food safety, she believes. By aligning with global best practices and standards, Bahrain ensures that its imported food products meet stringent safety requirements.
In discussing the Ministry’s approach to assessing and managing risks associated with imported food items, Ms. Almuqahwi emphasises the importance of rigorous testing and adherence to health policies. “We conduct physical tests and laboratory analyses to ensure that imported food products comply with safety standards,” she explains. “By prioritising risk-based approaches, the Ministry can identify and address potential hazards effectively.
“Technology plays a crucial role in enhancing the monitoring and safety standards of Bahrain’s imported food products. The ministry’s future plans include using the likes of big data, IoT, blockchain and predictive analytics in ensuring food safety. These advancements empower us to monitor imported food products more effectively,
To reduce the likelihood of food safety issues with imported products, she recommends a comprehensive approach that includes improved response mechanisms, collaboration with international partners, education and training, traceability systems, consumer awareness and effective communication
Finally, Ms. Almuqahwi offers advice to young Bahrainis interested in pursuing careers in health or government. “Pursue higher education, engage in continuous learning and remain passionate about serving others,” she advises. “By fostering a culture of excellence and dedication, Bahrain can cultivate the next generation of leaders in the field of food safety and public health.
Remember that a career in health or government is not just a job; it’s a calling. Be passionate, committed and dedicated to serving others.”
“
By implementing preventive measures, Bahrain can proactively address potential risks and protect public health.”

The Best of
Brews
There are few simple pleasures in life that are as beautiful as savouring a warm, well-brewed cup of tea. The duo behind Passion Tea Gardens, Monika Gorzna and Talah AlMutlaq, tell Farah Baig about how the brand makes tea rituals a reality for all.
Given the growing popularity of the ceremonial way of drinking tea, the process of brewing a warm cuppa can seem like a daunting task for some. The premium tea brand Passion Tea Garden bridges the gap between ceremonial tea drinking and convenience so all can enjoy this soothing experience.
“I was always aware of the health and beauty benefits of tea. So, when I moved to Bahrain 22 years ago and couldn’t find good tea, I travelled in search of some,” says Passion Tea Garden Managing Director and Tea Master, Monika Gorzna.
Her quest took her to Sri Lanka, India and China, and when the idea to start a tea brand came about, she decided to go one step further and address a market gap. “Baristas are well trained when it comes to coffee but tea is neglected. So, I don’t just supply the tea but rather train the team on different brewing techniques and create an experience tailored to the venue,” she says.
“With Passion Tea Gardens, people can enjoy a delicious cup of tea at several restaurants across Bahrain and even create their own tea ritual at home,” she adds.
Passion Tea Garden Partner, Talah AlMutlaq, joined the business in August 2023; together
the duo is taking the brand to refreshing heights. To experience Monika’s love for tea and encourage Talah’s connection with tea, they visited Darjeeling and explored four different tea gardens – two of which they ultimately collaborated with.
“It’s interesting because I was initially advised to stop drinking tea as I was seeing adverse effects. This trip changed that as I realised that it is the way you brew tea that matters. In Darjeeling, we tasted hundreds of blends of tea and I was perfectly fine,” says Talah. “To brew the perfect cup of tea, you need to add the right amount depending on your selection and steep it for three to five minutes.”
A curated selection of nearly 50 flavourful blends of tea sourced directly from tea gardens – the result of tea exploration trips – sets Passion Tea Gardens apart from regular brands. “To discover different teas, we learn the farming techniques, how they grow and explore tea drinking cultures. Currently, we find that any blends with Jasmine are very popular apart from our best seller, Natural Beauty,” says Monika.
While flavoured teas are growing in popularity, Monika believes that pure teas are delicious on their own. However, Talah has brought her own influence to the brand. “I love chocolate and
so we worked on the idea of a chocolate tea with real cocoa and stevia. People can enjoy this blend guilt-free while savouring its true flavour as it doesn’t have added sugars. People love it and the feedback has been amazing,” says Talah.
“I’m encouraging Talah to explore more flavours now. It’s refreshing for the brand and I’m excited to see what comes next!” says Monika enthusiastically.
Apart from their corporate offering, the brand offers gift boxes and custom blends depending on individual needs including those to promote wellness or aid with health concerns.
Passion Tea Gardens will soon be launching an e-commerce website, and can currently be found at select retailers and ordered online through Instagram @passionteagardens.

Secret Garden scents are known for pairing a flavoursome accord with a distinctive floral note. For the floral facet of Love Delight’s, the unmistakable aroma of warm almond and ripe cherries come together to complement the ‘Honey Glazed Pastry accord’. The result is the most enigmatically lustrous member of the Secret Garden Collection. Other notes contributing to this addictive fragrance include Ginger, Cinnamon, Jasmine, Rose, Vanilla Bean and Cocoa. Answering Your Daughter’s Biggest Questions
When raising your child, you might wonder which ‘coming of age’ questions you need to be prepared for. Ouiam El Hassani walks us through your daughter’s biggest questions about puberty and periods.
Puberty comes with a lot of changes for kids and a lot of questions. From what to expect from a first period to navigating mood swings, your tween may be looking for answers. Read on to learn how to answer your daughter’s most common questions about periods and puberty.
What happens during puberty?
Begin by explaining to your child that puberty is the period of time where your body goes through a series of changes as they transition from being a child to an adult. During puberty, a surge of hormones prompts a girl’s body to change. Her shape might become curvier as her hips widen. She might gain weight or have a growth spurt. Her breasts will start to grow. Be open about what your child should expect, including increased body hair, oily skin, growth spurts and mood swings.
When will I get my period?
The average age for a girl to begin menstruation is 12, with some girls starting as early as 8 or 9 years old. However, no one has a crystal ball, but this should give your daughter a general idea of when to expect her first period.
Let your child know that her period will start a few years after puberty begins. Explain that menstruation is the body’s way of gearing up to one day have a baby, when or if she chooses to. As much as you’re comfortable, you can explain the process of ovulation and how an egg is released every month from a woman’s ovaries. When the woman doesn’t become pregnant, the body sheds the uterine lining, which results in having a period. Explain that periods happen approximately every month, and the bleeding lasts for about three to five days, but everyone is different.

Which period products should I use? Will my period hurt?
Let your daughter know about the different options. She should feel free to try different products.
Here’s a tip: a period basket is a great way to celebrate your daughter getting her period. You can place pads, chocolates, their favourite tea, heating pad, yummy snacks, pain relievers and wipes in a basket so that your daughter’s period is a time of celebration.
Let your daughter know that experiencing some pain right before or during her menstrual cycle is common. The pain can feel like a bad cramp in the back or lower belly. Sometimes, she may also have nausea and diarrhea. You can explain to her that the reason for pain during her period is because her uterus (the organ that holds a fetus), contracts and releases a chemical called prostaglandins. Regular exercise, a warm bath, and heating pads help relieve discomfort, naturally.
Is it normal to feel weird about my body?
“Why do I feel more moody and emotional?”
Let your daughter know that there are lots of changes happening with hormones in her body leading up to and during her period. Her body is developing and so is her brain, so her emotions might be all over the place. She might be crying one minute and happy the next. She may be more sensitive or cry more easily than usual on certain days.
Lots of kids feel more self-conscious about their bodies during puberty. Reassure your child: let them know that whatever they are thinking or experiencing is normal. Everyone goes through it!
Remind your child that bodies come in all shapes and sizes. There is no one ‘right’ way to look. Your child may start to compare their bodies to others if they feel ‘behind’ or ‘ahead’ of their friend group. Validate and normalise their concerns and experiences.
Hopefully this guide makes answering your daughter’s questions about puberty and periods a little easier. And remember: so long as you’re accessible, present and approaching these topics with honesty, empathy and compassion, your child will feel safe and secure during this exciting transition.

Making ‘DesignedWorkplaces for Women’ A Reality
Dubai-based all-female agency, TishTash Communications, proves that staff benefits catering to the needs of women in the workplace reaps incredible results.
People across the world marked International Women’s Day on March 8 in grand fashion. However, the reality is that there is plenty of work that is yet to be done to achieve true gender equality. Global progress on women’s rights is “vanishing before our eyes”, the secretary general of the UN, António Guterres, warned, saying the increasingly distant goal of gender equality will take another three centuries to achieve. Women’s workplace equality is a key aspect in socio-economic deprivation and female empowerment. Still, in 2024, many workplaces are simply not designed with the needs of women in mind, or the many factors which would enable them to grow, flourish and achieve all that their male counterparts do.
The Dubai-based, award-winning independent communications agency TishTash, has created a 100 percent female workforce with a working environment designed especially for women’s needs. The agency’s commitment to designing a workplace for women includes the implementation of flexible working for all staff including a 4.5-day week, continued hybrid working, a ‘work from home country’ allocation each year and other benefits. The agency also boasts a myriad industry leading women’s health policies including paid leave for fertility treatments, menstruation and menopause. This is in addition to four women’s physio appointments which can be used during
pregnancy or up to six months after the birth of the baby. Further catering to the needs of women, the agency also provides four therapy sessions which support with pre- and post-partum depression. “Recent research by Bain & Company had 70 percent of GCC female respondents highlighting that gender bias and stereotypes represent one of their biggest challenges to workplace advancement, along with inadequate mentorship, training and support for work-life balance,” says CEO & Founder of TishTash Communications, Natasha HatherallShawe. “Organisations undergo a ‘tipping point’ in their journey toward gender equity success when women represent at least 30 percent of the total workforce. This effect is even more pronounced when women hold 30 percent or more of an organisation’s leadership roles.”
Proving that when these workplace needs are met, women can flourish, the agency has recorded phenomenal stats:
• 50 percent year on year increase for the past three years.
• 62 percent increase in turnover in the last 12 months (2022-2023).
• Significant client wins and international expansion.
• 45 percent of the team have been with the agency for more than 5 years.
• 8 percent company attrition.
• 45 percent of clients have been with the agency more than 4 years.
• Company achieved ‘Great Place to Work’ certification in 2023 with a score of over 95 percent.
Today the agency stands as a team of 68 women and is intended as a deliberate example of focus on the importance of policy change and operations that take into account the shocking statistics around the modern workplace for women and their workforce retention — an increase which benefits society as a whole, and not just the bottom line.
In a recent poll on the Woman This Month Instagram account, our followers voted unanimously that women should be granted paid leave to cater to women’s healthcare needs. Join the conversation, and follow @womanthismonth online.
