OCTOBER
we step into the autumn season, Bahrain This Month is thrilled to bring you a vibrant October edition, filled with exclusive interviews, engaging features and the latest happenings around the Kingdom.
One of the highlights this month is our special supplement, Germany in Bahrain. The deep-rooted ties between Bahrain and Germany are showcased through interviews and features, with the centrepiece being an exclusive conversation with His Excellency Clemens Hach, the German Ambassador to Bahrain. His insights into the evolving relationship between our two nations are both enlightening and inspiring. This issue also celebrates the long-standing friendship between Bahrain and Türkiye as we speak with Turkish Ambassador, Her Excellency Esin Çakıl. As her tenure in the Kingdom comes to a close, she reflects on her time here, the progress made across various sectors and her hopes for the future, particularly as Türkiye marks its 101st Republic Day.
Away from the diplomacy field, we were granted an exclusive and insightful interview with Dr. Hashim S. Hussein, who has led the UNIDO Investment and Technology Promotion Office (ITPO) since its establishment in 1996.
In her monthly Commerce op-ed, Pria Masson tackles a topic that many may find difficult but essential – what to do when money management goes wrong. Her piece on financial damage control provides valuable strategies for navigating tricky financial waters and offers practical steps to get back on track.
For motoring enthusiasts, Kristian Harrison brings you not one but two reviews this month, with both the Kia Seltos SUV and the Mercedes E-Class saloon having their day in the sun… literally! We also bring you the latest in Motoring News, included the announcement that Bahrain International Circuit will once again host F1’s pre-season test in 2025.
As the Kingdom springs back to life, the entertainment scene is buzzing this month, with a host of workshops, events and live performances that are sure to keep your calendars full. Happenings brings you a roundup of the best of Bahrain’s cultural and social offerings, ensuring you don’t miss a beat.
In the dining section, Edwin D’Souza checked out Downtown Rotana’s famed Village Brunch – a gastronomic feast that’s been the talk of the town. From sushi to roast stations and decadent desserts, this brunch promises a culinary journey like no other. Our Tablehopping feature also highlights the latest dining spots you must try this month.
As we get closer to our inaugural Woman of the Year awards in December, we have a special standalone issue of Woman This Month to check out, filled with the latest in fashion, beauty and inspiring stories. Plus, find out how preparations are going for what promises to be an incredible ceremony later this year!
As always, Bahrain This Month remains your guide to the very best that life in the Kingdom has to offer. Be sure to follow us on social media @bahrainthismonth and visit our website www.bahrainthismonth.com for more updates and features. We hope you enjoy this issue as much as we enjoyed putting it together.
Warm regards, George Middleton

Celebrating Diplomatic and Commercial Relations between Germany and Bahrain
Discussing Diplomacy, Energy & Cultural Exchange
As the German Ambassador to the Kingdom of Bahrain, HE Clemens Hach is in his third year of overseeing diplomatic relations between the two countries. With extensive experience in international crises and diplomacy, Ambassador Hach’s tenure in Bahrain is marked by fostering strong bilateral relations, enhancing business ties and promoting cultural exchange. Kristian Harrison sat down with him to discuss his career, the German-Bahraini relationship, and areas of mutual interest with a particular focus on renewable energy, education and trade.
Your Excellency, thank you for taking the time to chat with us! Can you tell us about your diplomatic journey to date and how you are finding your stint in Bahrain?
Thank you for having me. I’ve been in the diplomatic service for about 25 years. Throughout my career, I’ve had postings in Latin America, East Africa, the United States, and spent significant time at headquarters in Berlin, often working on international crises. For instance, I dealt with Afghanistan, Syria and Iraq when Daesh was
threatening these countries. My last assignment before Bahrain was in crisis prevention, peace building, and stabilisation, with a focus on West Africa. I came to Bahrain in 2022, and I am now entering my third year here.
Bahrain has been an incredibly welcoming place for me and my family. The island’s culture of hospitality is evident everywhere, making it a truly enchanting experience. Professionally, Bahrain’s diplomacy is impressive, punching above its weight, especially regarding efforts toward peace and reconciliation in the Middle East. This
environment has allowed me to build on the strong people-to-people relations between our two countries.
Bahrain is a relatively small country, especially compared to regional powerhouses like the UAE and Saudi Arabia. How does Bahrain maintain its strong standing in global diplomacy?
Bahrain’s strength lies in its principled and moderate stance, coupled with moral authority and leadership that has earned it credibility in diplomatic circles. Despite its size, Bahrain’s leadership makes bold decisions that contribute to peace and stability in the region. The country’s ability to maintain a balanced, pragmatic approach has solidified its role as a key player in Middle Eastern diplomacy.
What are the main areas of cooperation between Germany and Bahrain, particularly in business and the economy?
While Bahrain is a relatively small market, it offers a business-friendly environment with excellent regional connectivity. This has attracted several German companies, such as DHL, which has its regional headquarters here, and Hannover Re, one of the leading global reinsurers and a major player in Islamic reinsurance. German petrochemical giant BASF has a production facility in Bahrain and we also see engagement from smaller firms in the industry.
Beyond individual companies, strong ties between German and Bahraini businesses have developed through decades of partnerships, particularly within family-owned businesses. This cooperation strengthens our bilateral relations and creates lasting economic links.
Germany is known for its world leadership in renewable energy. How are you working with Bahrain on sustainability and renewable energy projects?
Germany has been at the forefront of renewable energy, and we’re eager to share our expertise with Bahrain as it pursues ambitious environmental goals, like net-zero carbon emissions by midcentury. We’ve collaborated on several initiatives, including a partnership between the German Technical Cooperation and Bahrain’s Supreme Council for Environment to establish environmental baselines.
On the technology side, the Fraunhofer Institutes in Germany are working with the University of Bahrain on solar panels adapted for hot climates. The research aims to improve the efficiency of solar panels in high temperatures, a significant challenge here in Bahrain. At the embassy, we’ve also installed solar panels in partnership with a Bahraini company, reducing our electricity consumption by about 20 percent.
Cultural exchange is another important part of diplomacy. What is the German Embassy doing to promote German culture in Bahrain?
This year, we are organising ‘German Weeks’ in Bahrain, starting with the Oktoberfest at the Diplomat Radisson Blu Hotel, Residence & Spa, Manama, and a German jazz concert at the Cultural Hall, coinciding with the Day of German Unity on October 3. Additionally, the big band of the German Armed Forces will perform on October 9, showcasing jazz, swing and even pop. We’re also partnering with Alosra to showcase German food products.
On a broader level, we contribute to cultural events such as the Spring of Culture and the International Music Festival, regularly bringing German music and art to Bahrain. These efforts help deepen the cultural ties between our two nations.
What can you tell us about the German community in Bahrain?
The German community in Bahrain is relatively small, with about 400 citizens, including those working in Saudi Arabia but living here. Many work at Bahraini or German businesses, and there is also a significant presence of German doctors. One of the most exciting developments has been the reactivation of the Bahraini-German Friendship Association, which promotes cultural and people-to-people exchanges. The association will also soon offer German language courses, further strengthening ties.
Germany is a popular destination for Bahrainis, both for tourism and education. What is the embassy doing to promote these sectors?
Germany remains a top destination for Bahrainis, especially for medical tourism and leisure travel, with Bavaria being particularly popular. Gulf Air now offers direct flights to both Munich and Frankfurt, making travel more convenient. Bavaria, with its mountains, lakes and castles, is a fantastic gateway to Europe.
In terms of education, Germany offers highquality, affordable education, with many courses available in English. Tuition fees are minimal, around EUR300 to EUR400 per semester, making it one of the most cost-effective places to study in Europe. We are working with the Bahraini-German Friendship Association to resume German language courses, which will open up further educational opportunities for Bahrainis.
Looking ahead, what goals do you hope to achieve during the remainder of your tenure?
One of my main goals is to strengthen people-to-people relations. The Bahraini-
German Friendship Association is a significant step in this direction, and I will continue to support its growth. Economically, we are exploring the creation of a European Chamber of Commerce to further promote business ties, not just between Germany and Bahrain, but with all of Europe.
On the political front, I am pleased with the strong relations we’ve built between senior officials in our two governments. I hope to facilitate more high-level visits from Germany to Bahrain during my remaining time here, further cementing our diplomatic ties.
Finally, is there a message you’d like to share with the German community in Bahrain?
I’d like to thank the German community for being ambassadors of Germany here in Bahrain. Your contributions to Bahrain’s development and your role in fostering German-Bahraini relations are invaluable. I look forward to continuing to work with you to further strengthen the friendship between our two countries.

RAISING SANITATION STANDARDS
Founded in 1962, Abdulaziz Hamad Al Saleh Company has grown from a modest trading enterprise into one of Bahrain’s leading suppliers of sanitary ware and plumbing products. With a long history of providing quality goods and services, the company has played a crucial role in Bahrain’s development, offering top-tier products for both the private and public sectors.
Initially focusing on the food and beverage sector, the company strategically shifted to importing infrastructure pipes and plumbing fittings to meet the Kingdom’s evolving needs. This decision marked a turning point, as Abdulaziz Hamad Al Saleh Company became the first in Bahrain to introduce Australianmade copper pipes and PVC plumbing fittings to the market.
One of the company’s key strengths is its partnerships with German manufacturers. Since the 1980s, it has cultivated a reputation as a trustworthy local partner, importing high-quality products from Germany, Australia and the UK.
German brands, in particular, have become a cornerstone of the company’s offerings, known for their advanced technology, stringent quality controls and innovative products.
The company’s dedication to quality goes beyond mere imports. Abdulaziz Hamad Al Saleh Company ensures each product
meets local standards through meticulous due diligence, including factory visits, technical evaluations and adherence to Bahrain’s governmental regulations. Their post-installation services, such as free third party system testing, further underscore their commitment to customer satisfaction.
The company has been involved in many well-known projects in Bahrain, starting from prestigious hotels, resort and Commercial Complex such as Jumeirah Royal Saray, Jumairah Bahrain Bay and Al Aali Complex to government sector such as Governmental Hospitals. Looking ahead, Abdulaziz Hamad Al Saleh Company aims to introduce new German brands to the Bahraini market while maintaining its reputation for excellence. The company’s vision is to maintain sustainability by continuously serving the Bahrain Market and contributing to neighbouring markets such as Saudi Arabia, the UAE and Qatar.
SHEER SOPHISTICATION
When it comes to the Mercedes E-Class, you know you’re stepping into a vehicle that oozes sophistication and style, but don’t be fooled – beneath all that luxury lies some serious engineering power… and an opportunity to have fun. Kristian Harrison drove the latest model in Bahrain and offers his thoughts.
The E-Class I had the pleasure of testing was the E 200 Sedan, sporting a 2.0-litre, 4-cylinder engine. This may sound modest, but with 204 horsepower on tap and a 0-100 km/h sprint of 7.5 seconds, it feels anything but tame. Pair this with a maximum speed of 240 km/h, and you’ve got a machine that doesn’t just glide – it surges. The 9G-TRONIC automatic transmission is a smooth operator, delivering gear changes as if it’s been practicing yoga – calm, fluid, and never in a rush, unless you command it by pushing the settings to ‘Sport’.
Driving through Bahrain has never felt more comfortable. Regional specification ensures that this car is more than ready for the heat, with the most radical air conditioning system I’ve ever seen. With a few presses of the touchscreen (more on that later) you can select a number of options (head, body, feet, etc.) or customise your own, and the car’s array of vents will automatically adjust by themselves. Genius! No more awkward reaching across the car whilst driving to rearrange them!
As for the suspension, the AVANTGARDE setup combined with an AMG sports package means a ride that balances comfort and agility beautifully. No more booking in for a back massage every time I navigate the speed bump hellscape of Saar!
The E-Class is packed with tech that feels borderline futuristic. The MBUX Superscreen
is the standout feature here – a staggering achievement that stretches from behind the steering wheel all the way to the passenger store with three distinct sections: the driver cluster with the usual barrage of gauges, shortcuts and controls; the main 12.3-inch central display where the car’s extensive range of infotainment and smartphone integration options are handled, and the OLED front passenger screen where one can amuse themselves with music, games and more.
There’s even a selfie and video camera perched on top of the dashboard – perfect for capturing those family days out without running the risk of a fine for using your phone or worse.
No stones are left unturned with the rest of the interior, with ARTICO man-made leather seats, a panoramic sliding sunroof, black piano lacquer trim and brown open-pore maple wood accents that provide an elegant contrast. The car also features active ambient
lighting with 64 colours, which is perfect for those moments when you want to feel like you’re driving in your own private lounge –because why not?
As with any Mercedes, safety is at the forefront. Blind Spot Assist, Active Parking Assist with Parktronic, and Collision Prevention Assist Plus are just a few of the features that ensure you stay safe no matter where the road takes you.
The Mercedes E-Class is the perfect blend of style, technology and performance. It glides effortlessly over smooth highways while still offering enough power to make the drive exciting. Not only that, but it’s packed with so much tech that it never lets you forget what driving should be: fun.

Leading the Way in
Eco-Tourism
As the world faces increasing environmental challenges, Germany is leading the way in sustainable travel through innovative initiatives that protect ecosystems, reduce carbon emissions and enrich local communities. Edwin D’Souza shares how Germany’s commitment to eco-conscious tourism is shaping the future of travel and inspiring adventurers to prioritise sustainability.
As global tourism expands, the industry is under increasing pressure to adopt sustainable practices that mitigate environmental concerns, such as carbon emissions, ecosystem degradation and overtourism. Germany is at the forefront of sustainable tourism, showcasing a variety of initiatives aimed at protecting natural and cultural heritage while encouraging tourism growth. Through these efforts, Germany is setting a global example of how to balance tourism with ecological and cultural sustainability.
Germany’s sustainable travel framework focuses on minimising the environmental impact of tourism by promoting eco-friendly accommodations, responsible travel practices and the preservation of local ecosystems and cultural heritage. It encourages travellers to make conscious choices throughout their journey from selecting green transportation and lodging to participating in low-impact activities. This not only conserves biodiversity and reduces greenhouse gas emissions but also helps sustain local communities and preserve cultural traditions.
Here are some of the key factors that make Germany a leader when it comes to eco-tourism:
NATURAL WONDERS
Germany’s national parks and nature reserves, including the Bavarian Forest National Park, are dedicated to promoting biodiversity and protecting ecosystems while allowing visitors to experience nature in a responsible manner. The country boasts 16 national parks and numerous nature reserves, many of which provide educational programmes, guided wildlife tours and sustainable accommodations. These initiatives not only allow visitors to connect with nature but also ensure that tourism does not come at the expense of environmental degradation.
CARBON-CONSCIOUS COMMUTING
Germany has long been a pioneer in sustainability, from reducing carbon emissions to developing efficient public transportation systems. Its comprehensive tourism policies have earned it recognition as one of the top sustainable travel destinations globally, making it a model for eco-conscious travel.
One of the cornerstones of Germany’s approach to sustainable tourism is its commitment to green mobility. Deutsche Bahn (DB), the national railway company, leads this charge by operating trains powered by renewable energy, providing travellers with an eco-friendly alternative to cars and planes. Germany’s extensive and efficient rail network connects cities and rural areas, reducing the environmental impact of travel while offering an accessible way to explore the country’s diverse landscapes. Urban centers such as Berlin, Munich and Hamburg also support sustainability by providing bike-sharing programmes, electric vehicle rentals and well-integrated public transportation networks, all designed to lower emissions and promote green travel.
ECO-FRIENDLY ACCOMODATIONS
Another vital aspect of Germany’s sustainable tourism offering is its focus on eco-friendly accommodations. Certified by organisations such as Green Key, EU Ecolabel and Bio Hotels, these establishments prioritise energy efficiency, water conservation and waste reduction, while offering guests a comfortable stay. They emphasise the use of locally-sourced organic food and operate with minimal environmental impact. Regions like Bavaria and the Black Forest are home to ecolodges and farm stays where visitors can engage in sustainable practices, such as organic farming and wildlife conservation, making their trips both immersive and eco-conscious.
Germany’s efforts in sustainable tourism illustrate how eco-conscious travel can be both enjoyable and impactful. Visitors to the country can indulge in its scenic landscapes, dynamic cities, and cultural heritage while actively participating in responsible tourism. Whether opting for green mobility, staying at eco-friendly accommodations, or engaging
ENVIRONMENT-FRIENDLY URBAN SPACES
Sustainable urban tourism is another key area of focus for Germany. Cities like Freiburg, often dubbed Germany’s greenest city, stand as testaments to sustainable urban planning, with pedestrian-friendly zones, green spaces and energy-efficient buildings. Cultural preservation plays a central role in Germany’s tourism strategy as well, with a strong emphasis on heritage tourism that supports local artisans, businesses, and cultural sites, ensuring that the country’s rich history is both shared and safeguarded.
in low-impact tourism activities, travellers contribute to the long-term preservation of Germany’s natural and cultural treasures.
As the urgency of climate change and environmental conservation intensifies, sustainable tourism is no longer just an option — it is essential for the future of travel.
Germany’s approach demonstrates how countries can safeguard their environment and cultural heritage while continuing to welcome visitors. By following Germany’s lead, travellers can inspire a global shift toward more sustainable travel choices, ensuring that future generations can enjoy the world’s beauty and diversity.
Celebrating the 101st anniversary of the Republic of Türkiye
As her tenure in the Kingdom comes to a close, Turkish Ambassador to Bahrain, Her Excellency Esin Çakıl, reflects on her time on the island, the progress made in various sectors and her hopes for the future. In this wide-ranging interview with Kristian Harrison, she discusses the successful diplomatic relations between Bahrain and Türkiye, the future of bilateral ties and her personal experiences representing her country.
Your Excellency, thank you for agreeing to this interview. Could you tell us about your diplomatic career journey so far?
I have been serving as the Turkish Ambassador in Bahrain, where I have always been welcomed with the warmest of feelings, for almost four years. As my tenure in Bahrain comes to an end, I would like to thank Bahrain This Month for its continuous support throughout my time here and for giving me one last opportunity to share my thoughts. There is a well-known saying that being a diplomat is not just a career path, it is also a lifestyle. You are far from home, but you are stepping into the dynamic and exciting world of international relations and contributing to the shaping of your country’s foreign policy.
I also feel lucky to serve in Senegal, Lebanon, the Netherlands and the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC). Among them, the TRNC has a distinguished place for me since I become a part of the immense efforts given by Türkiye to sisterly TRNC in all fields for their international visibility. During my career, I have accumulated a comprehensive portfolio ranging from Türkiye’s relations with NATO to energy policies and consular affairs.
What is the current state of relations between Bahrain and Türkiye? What are the main areas of cooperation?
Türkiye and Bahrain are two friendly countries bound together by deep-rooted historical, cultural, religious and socio-economic ties. Bilateral relations continue to thrive at an excellent level in all areas. Last year, we celebrated the Golden Jubilee of our diplomatic ties, a milestone that reflects the strength of our political, economic and cultural connections.
Over the past 50 years, our relations have significantly advanced across a wide range of sectors, including political sphere, tourism, trade, investment, healthcare, defence, education, energy and culture.
As one of the most recent developments that demonstrate our strong cooperation, we were proud to reassume the command of multinational counter-piracy task force CTF151, based in Bahrain, in July.
I believe there is immense potential for cooperation, particularly in areas such as youth affairs, investment and education. The relationship between Türkiye and Bahrain will continue to steadily grow and strengthen.
Are there any large-scale projects or high-level delegations planned for the near future?
The official visit of H.E. Prof. Dr. Numan Kurtulmuş, Speaker of the Grand National Assembly of Türkiye, to Bahrain earlier this year played a significant role in advancing our bilateral relations. There is a close contact between many of our institutions,
and I hope that such visits will continue to increase in the coming period.
In the near future, we will focus on the areas of economy, trade and investment. Delegations from the Investment Office of the Presidency of Türkiye and Foreign Economic Relations Board are set to visit Bahrain, where they will meet with representatives from the Kingdom’s public and private sectors in cooperation with the Bahrain Economic Development Board.
Also, the 8th meeting of the Joint Economic Committee between Türkiye and Bahrain, co-chaired by the Minister of Treasury and Finance of Türkiye and Minister of Finance and National Economy of Bahrain, will be held in Türkiye soon.
Turning to projects, over the past 20 years Turkish constructors successfully completed large scale operations in Bahrain. Among these were the extension of the Bahrain International Airport by TAV and the ALBA Line 6 expansion project by GAMA. Furthermore, last year, GETAS assumed the biggest solar panel project in the Kingdom.
Türkiye is one of the main tourist destinations for Bahrainis. What are the most popular places they like to visit?
Türkiye is a rare country where the influences of Asia, Europe and the Middle East are uniquely blended. Whether it’s the stunning beaches of Antalya and Bodrum, boundless valleys and rock carvings of Cappadocia or calming greenery of Bursa and Sapanca, Türkiye boasts a wealth of natural and cultural wonders.
With its historic landmarks, quintessential cuisine, festivals of art, celebration of faith and its famous cats, Istanbul is among the most visited cities by Bahrainis. Trabzon and Rize, located in the Black Sea coast, with their breathtaking mountains, are also among the most popular destinations.
As one of the world’s largest tourism destinations, Türkiye hosted almost 65,000 Bahrainis in 2023. After the visa exemption given to Bahraini citizens, I am sure that Türkiye will continue being the first tourism destination for Bahrainis.
What is the Embassy doing to promote Turkish culture in Bahrain?
I feel fortunate to serve in a country that holds such a deep appreciation for Turkish culture. I am grateful for the sympathy and interest of Bahraini people towards Turkish culture, cuisine, language and even TV series. As the Embassy, we support all initiatives that aim to further raise that awareness.
For instance, for the last three years we have facilitated a youth exchange programme, between Denizli Youth Centre and the Good Word Society of Bahrain. Yunus Emre Cultural Centre has been giving
Turkish language courses at the University of Bahrain for seven years. We occasionally meet with participants of the exchange programme and Turkish learners in Bahrain to listen their experiences and thoughts.
We also actively use social media, one the most important dialogue channels of our age, to promote Türkiye’s deep-rooted and vibrant culture.
How many Turkish citizens currently reside in Bahrain, and what sectors are they involved in?
There are around 2,000 Turkish citizens currently residing in Bahrain, and they have become esteemed and integral members of Bahraini society. Turkish expatriates contribute significantly across various sectors, including healthcare, engineering, academia, arts, skilled craftsmanship and business. I would like to take this opportunity to express my gratitude to the Turkish community in Bahrain for representing Türkiye in such a remarkable way.
As Republic Day approaches on October 29, what message would you like to convey to the Turkish community in Bahrain?
First of all, I would like to express my sincere appreciation to the Turkish community for the unwavering support they have shown to me and my colleagues at the Embassy, and making me proud with their presence and success during my tenure here.
I believe that we might broaden the definition of ‘home’ to encompass not just one’s physical location but also one’s nation of origin and emotional attachment. Therefore, Bahrain is now the second home of the Turkish community, who are only physically distant from Türkiye.
With these feelings, I sincerely congratulate Turkish citizens residing in Bahrain on the 101st anniversary of our Republic. I hope that our citizens will carry the same joy and happiness in their hearts throughout their lives as felt on the first day of the establishment of our great Republic.
Dr.
Propelling Development
Dr. Hashim S. Hussein has been at the forefront of driving Bahrain’s entrepreneurial ecosystem for over two decades, leading the UNIDO Investment and Technology Promotion Office (ITPO) since its establishment in 1996. In this interview with Bahrain This Month, Dr. Hussein sheds light on UNIDO’s initiatives, Bahrain’s achievements in entrepreneurship and the future of industrial growth.
Hussein, could you give us an overview of your career and how you came to head the UNIDO Investment and Technology Promotion Office in Bahrain?
It has been an honour to head this office since we established it in 1996. My background is in international management, having completed my Master’s and PhD in France, followed by further doctoral research in the US.
I joined UNIDO in 1991 and became the first industrial coordinator for the Gulf region. We quickly realised that private sector development was key to enhancing industrialisation efforts here, which led to
the creation of the ITPO in Bahrain. Today, we are part of a global network, with offices in eight countries including Japan, Italy, Germany, China, South Korea and Russia. Our focus is on mobilising investment and technology, and from Bahrain, we launched what’s known as the ‘Bahrain Model,’ now being implemented globally.
You recently met with Bahrain’s Minister of Social Development. Can you tell us how UNIDO is collaborating with the government on sustainable development?
We work closely with multiple ministries, particularly the Ministry of Finance and Economy, to align our efforts with Bahrain’s
broader development goals. Over the years, this collaboration has expanded to include the Ministry of Industry and Commerce, the Supreme Council for Women, and many universities. Our work is rooted in education, innovation and entrepreneurship, as we believe that fostering the right mindset early on is essential for sustainable development.
UNIDO Bahrain has played a crucial role in supporting youth and women. Are there any success stories you’d like to highlight?
One of our most celebrated success stories is Mrs. Huda Janahi, a trailblazing entrepreneur who entered our programme in 2001. She gained international recognition when
President George H. W. Bush praised her as a role model for women globally during the World Economic Forum in Davos. This is just one example of how our initiatives have empowered women and youth in Bahrain, thanks to His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa’s vision for economic restructuring, which prioritises these groups. Our efforts have helped millions of youth and women across the world, stemming from this initiative.
How do UNIDO’s projects in Bahrain align with broader regional and international goals?
Our focus is to support local development while also connecting Bahrain to the international community. We work on a range of programmes, particularly under the theme of ‘progress by innovation,’ which involves partnerships with organisations like the Economic and Social Commission of West Asia (ESCWA) and initiatives with countries like India, China and Italy.
The Bahrain Model, which addresses key challenges for SMEs such as access to finance and links between education and entrepreneurship, has become a globally recognised system, adapted to different regions, from the Arab world to Africa and beyond.
What role do investment and technology transfer play in Bahrain’s economic growth, and how does your office contribute?
Bahrain’s strategic position as a financial hub makes it an ideal location for facilitating investment and technology transfer. We work closely with the Ministry of Finance and international organisations to attract the right investments. We also focus on developing the local ecosystem by fostering partnerships between ministries, NGOs, financial institutions and universities. This holistic approach ensures that entrepreneurs have access to both the financial resources and technological tools they need to succeed.
How does industrial growth in Bahrain contribute to job creation, especially post-pandemic?
Industrial growth is critical to job creation, especially as Bahrain continues to embrace the Fourth Industrial Revolution. We are working on programmes focused on artificial intelligence, smart manufacturing and digitalisation.
Our partnerships with China, particularly with the city of Shenzhen, and India, through the Confederation of Indian Industry, are part of our efforts to bring cutting-edge technologies to Bahrain. These initiatives aim to help local industries transition to smart manufacturing, which will not only create jobs but also increase the competitiveness of Bahraini businesses globally.
How important is fostering regional cooperation between Arab and African countries in UNIDO’s mission?
Cooperation between Arab and African countries is a key focus area for us. Historically, there has been strong cultural and trade connections between these regions. Over the past 40 years, we’ve seen a growing number of dynamic entrepreneurs from both sides.
We are working to build institutions and programmes that encourage joint investment, research and education, particularly through platforms like our Virtual Innovation and Entrepreneurship Hub and partnerships with the Arab Bank for Economic Development for Africa (BADEA).
What do you see as the most pressing challenges for SMEs in Bahrain today, and how is UNIDO helping to address them?
Bahrain has a vibrant start-up ecosystem, but the challenge lies in ensuring the growth and sustainability of these businesses. We are focusing on helping SMEs embrace digitalisation and artificial intelligence to stay competitive. Additionally, given Bahrain’s smaller market size, it is crucial for local entrepreneurs to look beyond borders. Our focus is also on sectors like the creative and orange economy, which are among the fastest-growing industries globally and highly relevant to Bahrain’s talented youth.
As a global leader in investment and technology, what emerging industries do you think hold the most potential for Bahrain’s future economic growth? Industries tied to digitalisation, artificial intelligence and smart manufacturing are where we see the most potential. The education system needs to evolve to match these trends, ensuring that the future workforce is equipped with the necessary skills. We are already working with international partners, such as the International Youth and Innovation Organisation in China, to bring these technologies to Bahrain. The focus now is on aligning these efforts with global trends to drive Bahrain’s future growth.
Is there anything else you would like entrepreneurs in Bahrain to know about UNIDO’s work?
Our doors are always open. We work with the entire ecosystem in Bahrain, from government ministries to NGOs and universities, to support both emerging and established entrepreneurs. A unique initiative we’re running is the School Olympics for Innovation and Entrepreneurship, which encourages students to think globally while developing solutions for local challenges. This programme is part of our broader effort to embed entrepreneurship in the education system and prepare the next generation of innovators.

LUXURIOUS ITALIAN CRAFTSMANSHIP
Exploring the exquisite designs of Roberto Coin’s Domina, Venetian Medallions and Venetian Princess collections.
DOMINO COLLECTION
The inspiration for this very precious collection comes from far, far away. The game of dominoes was born in China in 1100. It was brought to Europe by Italians only 500 years later, and then spread to the entire world, becoming a traditional source of entertainment.
The jewels in the Domino collection are made of rows of identical elements that are repeated along the entire surface, just as in the elements of the game. The gold is treated like a precious stone and each element of the jewels are worked like a miniature artistic sculpture. The black and white diamonds that light up the entire collection give it a sense of depth. The result is a dazzling, pure light that will attract your gaze as well as an exotic sense of depth that will hold it.
The domino effect is a small movement that’s capable of triggering exponential energy. With this collection Roberto Coin reaches the same domino effect through a new approach to manufacturing, initiating a revolution in the world of gold.
With Domino, Roberto Coin has also celebrated the ancient know-how of Italian master goldsmiths in creating a design that’s essential but capable of infinitely multiplying the splendour of his jewels. A design that triggers the most precious domino effect we could have ever expected.
Roberto Coin’s creative designs are known for their unmistakable allure of uniqueness and style identity. These designs are brought to life at the hands of Italian craftsmen with each miniature masterpiece embellished with the famous ruby signature.
This season, we were drawn by the defined aesthetics and experimental designs of three of the brand’s beautiful collections. Let’s explore.
VENETIAN PRINCESS
The story of Venetian Princess is mythical and fascinating.
In fact, on the inside of each jewel is a complex structure of twisted threads that seems to want to remain hidden, revealing itself only to its wearer. This allure of mystery is the same that has always characterised the city of Venice with its countless legends and secrets, handed down generation after generation.
On the outside, the design is a re-interpretation of the decorations found on Venetian palaces and confirms the romantic look of the entire Princess family.
Venetian Princess is produced in all of the colours of gold and with an array of different decorations with stones that have become a trademark of Roberto Coin. After the first edition with black and white diamonds, able to create a mysterious allure, we can find pure white petals made in mother-of-pearl, black, shiny petals made of black jade, green petals made of malachite and others decorated with the blue of lapis lazuli.
The twisted thread detail that decorates all the jewels is produced in 3D, to guarantee perfection and maximum solidity, whilst diamonds are set by hand using a microscope.
The latest addition is the titanium version, which representant something completely inedited in the Roberto Coin’s creative world. Titanium petals are created using high-precision machines and then oxidised with a process to achieve the purest, most brilliant colour.
With this vast range of variety, Venetian Princess gives every woman the chance to find the look that best suits her, from the most fascinating and sensual to the most joyful and vivacious.
VENETIAN MEDALLIONS
Among the typical elements of the Venetian landscape, there are some lesser-known but equally significant ones. These are the patere, ornamental medallions made of stone or marble that recur on many façades.
They are romantic elements that visually narrate the stories of the family that used to live in the palace or convey a message to passers-by.
With the Medallions collection, Roberto Coin designs his own personal patere: a colourful wearable medallion with a floral motif illuminated by diamonds, symbolising the brand’s ever-growing creativity. Roberto Coin collections are available in 60 countries all around the world. Explore the collection that resonates with you at the Roberto Coin boutique located at Moda Mall. AGM
The AGM of the Bahrain Society (UK) was held at the Caledonian Club in London at the tail end of summer, under the chairmanship of Heather Harper, MBE, attended by HE Shaikh Fawaz bin Mohammed Al Khalifa, Bahrain’s Ambassador to the UK with the main speaker being HE Iain Lindsay, OBE, Adviser to the Bahrain Economic Development Board.
MONEY MANAGEMENT When Things Go Wrong
Over the last few months, Business Consultant, Pria Masson, has been speaking about how to manage money in many small ways from understanding your relationship with money, to understanding money and budgeting. This month, she takes a relatively unpleasant route, one where she discusses damage control with money. She walks us through what can go wrong, why it happens and how can you take steps, however difficult they may be, to get on a path to recovery.
Asearly as when we were in school, we all learned the basics of money and ‘breaking even’ when we earned and spent our pocket money. The principle was simple – our parents or care givers gave us a certain amount of money to spend and manage. If we ran out of it, we had to either find a way to earn more, go back to our parents and ask for more, or just make do until the next month arrived. That’s the principle of money, whether personal or
work related – you must manage with what you have or you’re in trouble.
What makes this challenging? Credit cards and loans in all their forms. They give you an option to spend more than you have today, assuming you will earn enough tomorrow to pay it back. Everyone aims to be able to complete this cycle, yet, calculations go wrong, unforeseen circumstances occur and financial stress builds.
Write It, Record It, Know It
The first step is to find out how to break even. The first step to do that, is to get into the habit of writing things down. Use notes on your phone, excel sheets, family WhatsApp groups – whatever works for you. But, have a clear, consolidated view of all your expenses. This means one place where you can see the expenses on every credit card and bank account that your family holds. Include in this the EMI on the loan and credit card debt accumulated. Similarly, in the same way and in the same place, know what your family income is including all earnings on investments,
This financial stress and burden are a common story across the board. It stems from many small and big decisions which somehow seem impossible to get a grip on. However, the threads that hold this chaos together are quite simple. Below are just some ways in which I would handle this, and these are in no way a comprehensive framework or specific advice. For that, you need a personalised expert opinion. Use this as what it is, a set of guidelines.
salaries, rent etc. Once you have the totals, that is your starting point.
Break It Down
Next, I would prioritise paying off credit card debt because it is one of the most expensive forms of financing. To do this, if you need to pull some money from savings abroad or sell some investments, it may be worth it depending on the amount involved and the earnings on those assets. If that is not an option, check and see if there is a cheaper source of financing available to you that can be used to pay off credit card loans. For
example, perhaps you can take a loan from your home country or locally here to pay the bank loan off. Again, it depends on the rate of interest involved. The basic idea is, pay off the most expensive debt and then move backwards from there.
Take It Slow
Finally, if you need to cut back on lifestyle, take it slow. Do not shock your family system unless you must. Make small cuts that will make a small difference each month. Just like compounding has a cumulative impact on how money grows, small savings, consistently can go a long way in keeping your finances healthy. As always, it’s not as easy as it seems on paper, because, almost all of us get triggered by money. Money is linked to self-worth, to lifestyle, to our childhood dreams and almost everything. Add to that, usually it’s the above factors at play for more than one person and can be very complicated. However, like I always say, let the numbers decide our actions not emotions. Trust the process, get the family

BAHRAIN BOURSE (BHB) RECEIVES AWARD

Bahrain Bourse has consistently demonstrated its dedication through initiatives that promote a fair, efficient, and transparent trading environment.
A prime example of this commitment is Bahrain Bourse’s collaboration with Abu Dhabi Securities Exchange (ADX). Following its strategic partnership with ADX, BHB and ADX announced the launch of the region’s first digital exchange hub – Tabadul in July 2022 to enable investors to trade directly on both exchanges through licensed brokers in both markets. This initiative was expanded to cover additional markets including Muscat Stock Exchange.

The International Finance Awards recognise outstanding achievement in the financial industry, honouring companies for their leadership, talent and strategic capabilities.
A specialist with over 25 years of experience in Tax & Legal services at PwC Middle East, Richard Bregonje, has stated that the Kingdom of Bahrain’s decision to implement a Domestic Minimum Top-up Tax (DMTT) at a rate of 15 percent on profits earned by Bahraini members of MNE groups sets a pioneering precedent within the GCC region, potentially serving as a model for neighbouring countries.
“This tax will not impact domestic Bahraini companies that are not part of Multinational Enterprises (MNE) groups, and the revenues generated could be utilised to improve public services, advance infrastructure development, and support major projects,” explains Mr. Bregonje.
“Bahrain’s decision to impose DMTT is a crucial step in the right direction, aligning with the
DOMESTIC MINIMUM TOP-UP TAX (DMTT) TO BE IMPLEMENTED FROM JANUARY 1
government’s policies and the economic recovery plans outlined in Bahrain’s Economic Vision 2030. The decision also represents an important shift towards reducing reliance on oil revenues, supporting economic stability and financial balance, especially given the volatility in today’s global oil market,” he adds.
PwC Middle East Senior Associate – Tax & Legal services, Fatima Alshamaa, describes the implementation of DMTT as a significant milestone in Bahrain’s tax landscape for multinational enterprises. The tax is applicable exclusively to Bahraini entities that form part of MNE groups with annual revenues of EUR750 million or more as per the consolidated financial statements
BAHRAIN AND HUNGARY’S BUSINESS BOOST
Relations between Bahrain and Hungary have reached a new high after Fareed Bader, Chairman of the Industry and Energy Committee at the Bahrain Chamber of Commerce and Industry, recently met with the Bahrain & Hungary Relations organisation to strengthen ties between Bahrain and Hungary. The discussion centred on joint cooperation in industrial innovation, particularly in energy conservation and carbon emission reduction.
Tamas Hovany, CEO of Bahrain & Hungary Relations, highlighted the organisation’s commitment to fostering economic collaboration and investment exchanges between the two nations. This aligns with the recently signed ‘Protection of Investments’ agreement, which aims to enhance bilateral investment protection.
A key focus of the collaboration is introducing advanced Hungarian technologies, such as a highly efficient steam generator designed to reduce energy consumption and environmental impact. Mr. Hovany emphasised the potential of this innovation to boost Bahrain’s industrial productivity and contribute to the Kingdom’s economic growth, with the possibility of registering the invention as a Bahraini patent. This would secure intellectual property rights and create new opportunities for local and international partnerships.
of the ultimate parent entity of the MNE. The DMTT does not apply to local Bahraini groups which do not have entities or establishments outside of the Kingdom.
Ms. Alshamaa adds: “Scheduled to take effect on January 1, 2025, this legislation provides multinational companies with a preparatory period to assess its impact on their operations. Companies are advised to undertake thorough evaluations and seek specialised professional consultations to ensure full compliance with the forthcoming requirements.”

EXPLORING THE VERSATILITY OF THE SELTOS
Driving through the streets of Bahrain, the Kia Seltos is ideal for those seeking a stylish yet practical vehicle for urban driving, long highway cruises and everything in between. Kristian Harrison found out how the comfy SUV blends performance with technology, packing in a plethora of features to complement its striking design.
Assoon as you step inside the Kia Seltos, the first thing you’ll notice are the innovative dual screens. They seamlessly combine the infotainment system at the centre and the driver cluster behind the steering wheel, providing a modern, unified visual experience. This setup is not only sleek but also highly functional, allowing drivers to access navigation, entertainment and vehicle information with ease. It’s a perfect fit for the tech-savvy driver who values convenience without compromising on aesthetics.
The SUV comes with two engine options: a fuel-efficient 1.6-litre petrol engine and a 2.0-litre engine for those wanting a bit more power. Either way, the Seltos is adaptable, offering a smooth ride with responsive handling, even on tight corners and uneven roads.
Kia has also equipped the Seltos with impressive technology to enhance your driving experience. The star of the cabin, aside from the dual-screen setup, has to be the Bose premium sound system. The funky, angular design of the speakers adds a fun, futuristic vibe to the interior, while the audio quality is exceptional, delivering deep bass and crisp treble.
In terms of comfort, the Kia Seltos caters to both driver and passengers. The seats are well-cushioned and supportive, with options for premium leather upholstery in higher trims. There’s ample headroom and legroom, even for backseat passengers, making longer drives around Bahrain a breeze. Additionally, the rear seats can be folded flat, expanding the cargo space.
Safety is another highlight of the Seltos. Kia has integrated several advanced safety features, including forward collision avoidance assist, lane-keeping assist and blind-spot detection. These systems work together to provide an extra layer of protection, especially in busy traffic or on
highways. Combined with the solid build of the car, these features offer peace of mind. Fuel economy is also worth mentioning. The Seltos is highly efficient, performing well in efficiency tests despite its SUV stature, making it an excellent option for those looking to save on petrol costs.
Aesthetically, the Seltos stands out with its sharp lines and distinctive tiger-nose grille, a signature of Kia’s design language. The car’s robust stance is further enhanced by LED headlights and sporty alloy wheels, giving it a presence that’s hard to miss.
Overall, the Kia Seltos is a well-rounded SUV that offers style, tech and practicality at a competitive price point. With its impressive digital screen, premium sound system and solid performance, it’s a vehicle designed for the modern driver.

With its V12 engine and solid gold coachwork, the Phantom III was both a powerful and luxurious choice for smuggling gold in the film. This Phantom, recognised for its role in Goldfinger, has become synonymous with the Bond franchise, reinforcing RollsRoyce’s legacy of elegance and innovation. The car’s unique design elements, like the ‘AU 1’ number plate, further cement its place in film history.

OLDEST BENTLEY T-SERIES RETURNS TO CREWE AFTER 59 YEARS
The oldest Bentley T-Series, a 1965 Shell Grey saloon, has returned to Crewe after nearly six decades. This iconic car, chassis number SBH1001, was the first T-Series off the production line and was featured at the 1965 Paris Salon de l’Auto.
Used as a company trials car, it was later discovered in storage, missing several key parts, including its entire interior. Recognising its historical significance, Bentley recommissioned the vehicle, preserving much of its original components.
The restoration was entrusted to specialists at P&A Wood, who faced numerous challenges, including a missing dashboard, damaged wiring and poor-quality crash repairs. The team sourced a donor vehicle to restore essential parts and meticulously worked to maintain the car’s authenticity. Key components, such as the drivetrain and engine, were found in surprisingly good condition, requiring only minor servicing.
Now restored, the T-Series joins Bentley’s Heritage Collection, where it will be displayed at the Crewe campus alongside 45 other historical vehicles. Kept in road-legal condition, this revitalised saloon completes Bentley’s heritage story of the 1960s and 1970s.
Here’s what’s coming to screens both big and small this month.

Post Malone
F-1 Trillion
What’s the story?
F-1 Trillion is the sixth studio album by American rapper and singer Post Malone. The album marks Malone’s transition to country music and features guest appearances from Tim McGraw, Hank Williams Jr., Morgan Wallen, Dolly Parton and more. Malone began exploring country music for the first time in 2023, before reaching out to collaborators to create this album.
Worth a listen?
F-1 Trillion is smoother than the blustering country of the 2010s, with sanded-down edges and aerodynamic verses that tumble pleasantly into hooks. These tricky little songs are powered by momentum, and yet they’re oddly wordy, overburdened by their ‘cleverness.’ You needn’t get too deep into the weeds of F-1 Trillion to sense that Post is shy about his place in country music in a way he never seemed to be in rap. Of the album’s 18 tracks, he handles three alone: a halfway-decent love song, a ballad for his daughter on her future wedding day, a synth-pop slow dance number perhaps left off his last record and gussied up with pedal steel. The rest are duets with country’s luminaries, then and now.
Oasis
Definitely Maybe (30th Anniversary
Deluxe Edition)
Fresh from breaking the Internet with their reunion announcement, Oasis’ debut album Definitely Maybe celebrates its 30th anniversary. The fastest-ever selling debut in the UK on release, this seminal album marked the point when Oasis became a cultural phenomenon. Including the classic singles Supersonic, Live Forever and Cigarettes & Alcohol, its songs sound as fresh and relevant as they did in 1994. This Limited-Edition Deluxe 2CD / Limited-Edition Deluxe 4LP includes the 2014 remastered album plus the previously unreleased and discarded original recording session from Monnow Valley along with outtakes from Sawmills Studios plus a demo of Sad Song featuring Liam’s vocal – all recently mixed for this release by Noel Gallagher and Callum Marinho.
Nick Cave Wild God
Nick Cave doesn’t do happy. He’s a remarkably literate and insightful songwriter, and he can be one of the most intense and magnetic performers you’re ever likely to see, yet even at his liveliest, his work looks to the dark side of the human experience. Wild God sounds like the work of a man who is still coming to terms with heart-breaking loss, and is utterly unashamed to show us his scars. At the same time, it sounds bold, impassioned, and very much alive, acknowledging the yin of grief and the yang of survival. It’s a potent celebration of life amidst chaos and cruel fate, and while it still doesn’t sound exactly happy, in its way it is the most optimistic album Cave has ever made.
Mercury Rev Born Horses
On Born Horses, Mercury Rev still has the power to deliver powerful musical experiences. Free jazz, torchy ballads and show tunes have all been a part of the Mercury Rev brew since the beginning, but on their first new music since 2015, they’re the main ingredients. This time, the band deploys them with a maturity and control that only heightens the album’s fusion of experimental sounds and genuine emotion. More grounded and yet more transporting than many of their later albums, Born Horses is ample proof that Mercury Rev are still making moving, thoughtful, exciting music.

WARHAMMER 40,000: SPACE MARINE 2
When the original THQ was dissolved, it looked like a sequel to Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine would never be possible. More than a decade later, Saber Interactive has rescued that series from obscurity and is ready to continue the fight. So far, the sequel looks like a brutal and satisfying action experience that combines an incredible sense of scale with gameplay that truly makes you feel like one of mankind’s greatest defenders. With PvE and PvP gameplay, an inspiring approach to post-launch content, and hordes of heretical enemies to mow through, Space Marine 2 could be one of the most cathartic games of the year.
