CELEBRATING A MILESTONE
In an exclusive interview with Bahrain
This Month, Indonesian Ambassador to Bahrain, HE Ardi Hermawan, reflects on a diplomatic journey spanning more than 30 years. On the occasion of Indonesia’s 79th Independence Day on August 17, he offers Kristian Harrison insights into bilateral relations, discusses future collaborations and reveals the Kingdom’s Indonesian community’s plans to celebrate this auspicious occasion.
Your Excellency, thank you so much for speaking to us. Firstly, can you tell us about your diplomatic career to date?
I was born in Padang, West Sumatra, but spent my youth in Surabaya, where I completed my undergraduate studies. Surabaya holds a special place in my heart, as it is where I met my wife. We are blessed with three daughters and two grandchildren. I earned my BA in International Relations from Universitas Airlangga in Surabaya and pursued postgraduate studies in Australia, obtaining a Diploma from the Australian National University and a Master’s degree from Monash University.
My first diplomatic posting was at the Indonesian Embassy in Paris in 1994, followed by assignments in Budapest, Tokyo and San Francisco. Before my current post in Bahrain, I served at the Ministry of Tourism of the Republic of Indonesia. I have also worked in several departments at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Jakarta, including the Directorate of European Affairs and the Human Resources Bureau.
Can you share some insights into the current state of Indonesia-Bahrain relations and any significant developments in recent years?
Politically, the bilateral relationship between Bahrain and Indonesia has never been better. Since establishing diplomatic relations in 1984, both countries have had no political issues hindering their relationship. They share much in common: Muslim majorities, archipelagic and seafaring cultures, and a commitment to peace and coexistence.
Currently, the two countries are closely coordinating for this year’s 2nd Political Consultation, a strategic platform for reviewing bilateral cooperation and exploring new opportunities. Indonesia welcomes Bahrain’s efforts to enhance engagement with ASEAN and the adoption of the ASEAN – GCC Framework of Cooperation.
Economically, our trade relations are stable with significant potential for growth. We are working on the potential reopening of direct flights to Jakarta by Gulf Air, which would enhance trade and tourism.
What are the key areas of cooperation between Indonesia and Bahrain, and how do you see these evolving in the future?
In politics, both countries support each other’s candidatures at various international organisations. Economically, trade and tourism are major areas of cooperation. Despite a stable trade balance and increasing tourist numbers, there is potential for stronger cooperation.
Education is another key area. Bahrain is a leader in Islamic economy and finance education, attracting Indonesian universities and institutions for collaboration. The Embassy is also working to intensify consular cooperation to better serve and protect Indonesian citizens in Bahrain.
The Embassy’s efforts are focused on building a robust and multi-faceted relationship that benefits both countries on various levels.
Indonesia is known for its rich cultural heritage. How is the embassy promoting Indonesian culture in Bahrain, and viceversa?
The Embassy participates in numerous cultural events annually, including the Bahrain Summer Festival and various school and community events. We also organise a Batik Fashion Show in Manama and collaborate with ASEAN Embassies in social and cultural activities, such as the ASEAN Bazaar.
We are exploring collaborations between artists, designers, galleries and museums from both countries to further cultural exchange.
What are the main economic ties and trade figures between the two countries, and what opportunities exist for Indonesian businesses in Bahrain?
In 2023, the total trade volume between Bahrain and Indonesia reached USD210.5 million. Bahrain exports petroleum gas, refined petroleum and aluminium to Indonesia, while importing cars, palm oil and textiles. Bahrain offers promising opportunities for Indonesian consumer goods, such as stationery, snacks and home appliances.
The Embassy is dedicated to fostering stronger connections between Indonesian and Bahraini businesses. We are hosting business forums and trade exhibitions to showcase Indonesian products and services, aiming to create more partnerships and joint ventures. By enhancing our economic ties, we hope to provide more opportunities for both Indonesian and Bahraini entrepreneurs, contributing to the prosperity of our nations.
How has the bilateral trade between Indonesia and Bahrain been impacted by the global economic challenges, and what measures are being taken to enhance it?
The global economic situation has caused a slight decline in our trade due to decreased Bahrain oil exports. However, non-oil sectors like services have seen growth, creating new opportunities. We are intensifying trade promotion through business matching activities and participation in trade events. Education and tourism are vital sectors for both countries. Are there any new initiatives or upcoming events planned to boost collaboration in these areas?
East Asian and Southeast Asian countries are not the most favoured destinations for Bahraini students, with only one currently studying in Indonesia. However, we are continuously promoting Indonesian educational institutions and cultural
exchange programmes to attract more Bahraini students.
For example, we are working on educational exchanges and scholarships to encourage Bahraini students to study in Indonesia. These initiatives not only promote academic excellence but also enhance mutual understanding and cultural appreciation.
How does the embassy support and engage with the Indonesian community and what consular services does it offer?
Based on data from LMRA, as of November 2023, the total number of Indonesian citizens in Bahrain is recorded as 6,965. Of these, 88 percent are women; 86 percent work in the domestic/informal sector; and 14 percent of the remaining individuals (958 people) are family members or Indonesian citizens employed in various sectors, including hospitality, cafes, restaurants, academia, IT professionals, consultants and more.
We offer consular services for Indonesian citizens, including assistance in resolving issues to return home as quickly as possible, providing a list of local lawyers and translators, assisting with document legalisation, issuing passports and obtaining outstanding salaries.
This year marks Indonesia’s 79th Independence Day. Can you share the significance of this milestone and any special plans to celebrate it in Bahrain?
On this historic and auspicious occasion, I extend my warmest greetings and share my
happiness with the Indonesian community and friends of Indonesia in Bahrain. It is my great honour to express my deepest appreciation and gratitude to His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, the Crown Prince and Prime Minister HRH Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, as well as the government and the people of the Kingdom of Bahrain for their kind wishes and messages of congratulations.
This year, the theme for Indonesia’s Independence Day is ‘Nusantara Baru, Indonesia Maju,’ which loosely translates to ‘New Nusantara, Go Forward Indonesia.’ This theme embodies the country’s transformation and progress, highlighting its dynamism, synergy and proactive approach to addressing global challenges.
We have planned various cultural and community events in Bahrain to celebrate this milestone and strengthen our ties with the local community.
Is there anything else you would like to share with our readers?
I understand that Indonesia is located far from the Gulf region, and many people here are primarily aware of its status as the country with the largest Muslim population. However, Indonesia has much more to offer. It is a G20 member and actively contributes to global peace by deploying over 25,000 personnel in 30 United Nations peacekeeping missions since 1957, and is deeply committed to supporting the Palestinian cause.
I want Indonesia to be recognised as a large, beautiful nation with a rich history and culture, abundant natural resources, industrious people, and as one of the world’s economic powerhouses. Above all, I want Indonesia to be known, like Bahrain, as a friendly and peace-loving country.

Advancing Historic Relations
In an exclusive interview with Bahrain This Month for its India in Bahrain supplement on the occasion of India’s 78th Independence Day on 15th August, His Excellency Vinod K. Jacob, the Indian Ambassador to Bahrain, discusses his distinguished diplomatic career, the multifaceted and historical relationship between India and Bahrain and its future prospects.
Your Excellency, thank you for speaking with us today. Could you give us a brief overview of your diplomatic career to date?
I joined the Foreign Service in 2000 and have since accumulated nearly 24 years of diplomatic experience. My career began with learning Mandarin in Beijing, where I had my first posting. I have had multiple postings in Beijing and have developed expertise in dealing with India’s South Asian neighbours like Pakistan, Afghanistan and Sri Lanka. My most recent role before coming here was as the Deputy High Commissioner to Sri Lanka from 2019 to 2023. I also have significant experience in multilateral diplomacy, having dealt with the United Nations and other international organisations.
You have been ambassador here for just over a year now. What are your key observations during this period?
This is my first tenure in this region, and I was quite new to it. However, the commonalities between India and Bahrain are striking. The historical connections between the Indus and Dilmun civilisations are evident in everyday interactions, trade, cultural exchanges and even in the movies. A significant aspect is that a quarter of Bahrain’s population is of Indian origin. This is the first country I have served where I have seen such a large and wellintegrated Indian community. The leadership in Bahrain is notably tolerant and liberal, making it easy for foreigners, including Indians, to live and thrive here.
What would you consider to be the key achievements and milestones of your tenure here in the last year?
2023 was significant as it marked India’s G20 presidency, and Bahrain provided substantial support during this period. Another notable achievement was receiving a royal pardon for nearly 100 Indian prisoners, which is a testament to the strong bilateral ties. Additionally, we have seen a greater convergence on important issues like climate change. This year also marks important anniversaries: the 25th year of His Majesty’s ascension to the throne, the 10th anniversary of his historic visit to India in 2014, and the 5th anniversary of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Bahrain in 2019.
Could you give us an idea of the current trade relationship and trade figures between India and Bahrain?
I had initially expected the bilateral trade to be around USD1.3 to USD1.4 billion, but it has exceeded that. From April 2023 to March 2024, Indian exports to Bahrain were around USD900 million, and Bahraini exports to India were about USD830 million, making it a nearbalanced trade relationship. This is a significant improvement from two years ago when the trade gap was USD150 million. The composition of trade has also evolved, with engineering goods, electronic goods and petroleum products now leading India’s exports
to Bahrain, reflecting a shift from traditional exports like rice and food items.
Are there any other sectors that you think might be ripe for increased potential?
Our relationship is truly comprehensive, covering trade, economic engagement, investment and people-to-people exchanges. Last year, one million Indian tourists visited Bahrain. The Indian Navy has also contributed to maritime security in the region, which is a newer area of cooperation. There is significant potential in technology, education and other areas.
Could you share the total number of Indians working or resident in Bahrain and the sectors they are involved in?
According to the government of Bahrain, there are 340,000 Indians here. They are active in various sectors, including business, financial services and education. This community is very law-abiding and serves as a force multiplier for the bilateral relationship.
Are there any specific areas of cultural exchange that you think will be explored this year and beyond?
Cultural exchange is a continuous and vital aspect of our relationship. Recent initiatives include the visit of the president of BACA to the 46th session of the World Heritage Committee of UNESCO in Delhi. We participate in programmes like Muharraq Nights and the International Music Festival, and we have started yoga and Hindi classes at the embassy. We are also promoting individual Indian states to enhance cultural and commercial ties.
Could you share the latest developments in the education sector as far as Indian education is concerned in Bahrain?
The Ministry of Education in Bahrain has been very supportive of our schools and students. Efforts are underway to expand cooperation to higher education, aiming for long-term university-to-university engagements. This will further strengthen our educational ties.
Are there any upcoming delegations planned either from Bahrain to Delhi or vice versa?
With a new government in place in India, we expect to resume high-level visits and exchanges soon. Both bilateral visits and engagements on the sidelines of international organisations like the UN General Assembly are anticipated. Bahrain is a key partner in our universal dialogue on sustainability in the context of the global south.
Are there any specific initiatives or plans that you would like to achieve this year?
We aim for incremental progress in our relationship, building on the achievements of the past year. We seek to deepen and broaden cooperation in various sectors, including science and technology, defence, education and maritime security. Our shared commitment to combating climate change, piracy and drug trafficking will also be strengthened.
Have there been any specific challenges you’ve faced over the last year, and how have you overcome them?
Our bilateral relationship with Bahrain is extremely friendly, with no significant issues. The only minor challenge was the export ban on onions imposed by India for domestic reasons. However, Bahrain was one of the few countries granted an exemption, reflecting our strong bilateral ties.
Historic relations between Bahrain and India go back 5,000 years. Is there a message you would like to give to the people of Bahrain and the Indian nationals resident here on the occasion of Indian Independence Day?
We are at a significant period of opportunity. India’s economy is growing rapidly, and Bahrain should leverage this for mutual prosperity. The historical ties between our countries can help us achieve greater economic growth and development together.
Outside of your ambassadorial work, do you have any specific hobbies or interests?
I have developed an interest in the Arabic language and enjoy speaking it publicly. I also play cricket with the Indian community here, which helps bring us together. Bahrain’s rich history and culture are fascinating, and I take every opportunity to explore this wonderful country.
Key Facts and Figures:

Fostering Lucrative Commercial Relations
The Bahrain India Society was established in 2008 by prominent businessmen from Bahrain and India, with HE Abdulnabi Alsho’ala as its founding chairman, and has been a cornerstone in fostering the deep-rooted relationship between the two nations. The non-political, non-profit organisation aims to enhance not only business links but also cooperation in politics, social affairs, science and culture. For our special India in Bahrain supplement, Farah Baig sat down with Vijay Boloor, BIS Treasurer, and Zahraa Taher, BIS Secretary General, who shared insights into the society’s evolution, its current focus and future plans.
“Given the long-standing presence of Indians in Bahrain, it was essential to create a platform for businessmen and entrepreneurs from both countries to interact and collaborate,” Mr. Boloor emphasises. This vision has guided the Bahrain India Society (BIS) since its inception, creating numerous opportunities for networking and cooperation.
Ms. Taher, who joined BIS in 2013-14, has been instrumental in shifting its focus towards business and economic activities. “When I joined, BIS was mainly focused on cultural activities. I saw an opportunity to improve business and economic ties, which are vital for both nations,” she explains. Her efforts have led to the organisation of business lunches, partnerships with banks and other initiatives that underscore the economic potential between Bahrain and India.
Membership growth and engagement are pivotal to the BIS’ future, particularly in a post-Covid environment, she believes: “We are focusing on increasing the number of members, especially enthusiastic members who see the potential in driving growth and creating collaboration. We want members who are active and committed in order to maintain the momentum we are currently experiencing.”
“The pandemic posed significant challenges, but it also presented unique opportunities.
Numerous delegations and interactions have been successful under the current board and we have managed to maintain and even enhance our activities thanks to our resilience and adaptability,” she adds.
The society plays an active role in fostering business connections, with a major event planned for later in the year. “In October, we will bring together key players from various industries,” Mr. Boloor states. “These events are crucial for networking and sharing success stories, providing a platform for members to interact, exchange ideas and explore potential collaborations. In fact, our periodical events feature high-level speakers and guests from ministries and organisations including the Ministry of Commerce, Tamkeen and the Labour Market Regulatory Authority (LMRA).”
BIS’ primary focus remains on trade and business links. “Economic opportunities is where we see the most potential for growth and collaboration between Bahrain and India,” Ms. Taher explains. “This strategic focus aligns with the broader objectives of enhancing bilateral relations through practical and impactful initiatives.”
Social affairs and cultural exchanges, though not the primary focus, are still part of the society’s agenda, however. “We have facilitated cultural exchange programmes that allow Bahrainis and Indians to experience each other’s traditions and customs,” Ms. Taher
reveals. “These programmes help in building mutual respect and understanding.
“Speaking of understanding, our board is very diverse, with members coming from various sectors such as communication, events, hospitality and law. This diversity allows us to approach our goals from multiple angles and create a more robust platform for our members.”
Furthermore, BIS has been proactive in organising seminars and workshops that address key issues relevant to both Bahrain and India. Just recently, the society conducted a workshop on renewable energy, which brought together experts from both countries to discuss potential collaborations in the sector.
Mr. Boloor is proud of these success stories, which highlight the wider impact of the society’s initiatives. “One of our major achievements was the collaboration between Bahraini and Indian IT firms, which resulted in a joint venture that significantly boosted the tech sector in both countries. Additionally, our efforts have led to increased trade delegations that facilitate direct business interactions and agreements,” he states.
In terms of political ties, BIS has played a supportive role in bolstering bilateral relations. “While we do not engage in
political activities, our efforts in strengthening economic and social ties indirectly contribute to the overall diplomatic relationship between Bahrain and India,” he explains. “This nuanced approach ensures that the society remains a respected and influential entity in both countries.”
Looking ahead, both are optimistic about the future of the society. “We have a clear vision and a dedicated team that is committed to driving growth and strengthening ties. Our focus will continue to be on creating opportunities for our members and fostering a collaborative environment,” Mr. Boloor states.
Ms. Taher echoes this sentiment, adding: “The potential for growth is immense. With the right strategies and active member participation, we can achieve great milestones and contribute significantly to special and fruitful relationship between Bahrain and India.
“As it moves forward, BIS remains a beacon of cooperation and mutual prosperity for both nations. With a clear vision and active member engagement, we truly believe that our society is set to achieve even greater success in the years to come.”
A Pillar of Support
The Indian Community Relief Fund (ICRF) was established in 1999 by the Embassy of India in Bahrain with the mission of ensuring the welfare of Indian workers in the region. Since its inception, the initiative has focused on serving the less fortunate members of the Indian community. Kristian Harrison spoke with ICRF Chairman, Dr. Babu Ramachandran, about how the organisation supports those who are less fortunate with a team of more than 300 volunteers.
Dr. Ramachandran’s involvement with ICRF stems from his long-standing commitment to community outreach. “I was drawn to ICRF’s selfless service and integrated into the organisation, believing in the power of teamwork over individual efforts,” he states.
Despite Bahrain being a welcoming place for Indian expatriates, several challenges persist. These include Indians being misled by false promises and living without proper legal visas, individuals living beyond their means leading to debt traps despite awareness campaigns, health neglect resulting in chronic diseases and depression and mental health issues due to isolation from family.
his recovery and return home. Additionally, a woman without birth certificates for her children was successfully sent back to India with the help of ICRF volunteers, the Indian Embassy and local authorities,” he states.
“The ICRF tackles these issues through various programmes,” Dr. Ramachandran explains. “Our medical camps, for instance, identify and manage chronic diseases among Indian workers, and our 24/7 helplines provide visa assistance, distress support for housemaids
ICRF operates inclusively, allowing any Indian to volunteer without regional, linguistic or ethnic restrictions. The organisation works closely with the Embassy of India, especially in supporting stranded workers and housemaids in need of temporary shelter. For example, in a recent fire
tragedy in Manama, ICRF coordinated with the Embassy and other associations to provide necessary assistance.
One of the ICRF’s most important facilities are its medical camps, with more than 160 conducted so far, benefiting thousands of individuals.
During the Covid-19 pandemic, they provided dry food rations, air tickets, face masks, antibacterial soaps and awareness flyers to underprivileged Indian workers. Other services include hospital and mortuary visits, immigration support, visits to labour camps and financial assistance for medical treatments and repatriation.
“All year round, we run numerous vital programmes,” Dr. Ramachandran reveals.
“Firstly, our Thirst-Quenchers programme raises summer health and safety awareness while distributing bottled water and fruits to workers. We are also running Gatekeeper Trainings under the banner of ICRF-LIFE (Listen, Involve, Foster, Engage) to train volunteers to identify and intervene in suicide risks and provide mental health support. Finally, the Family Relief Fund offers financial assistance to dependents of deceased workers, having distributed more than BD270,000 to more than 600 families.”
As ICRF celebrates its Silver Jubilee, Dr. Ramachandran envisions continued growth and outreach in the future. He acknowledges the contributions of past leaders and emphasises that “every day is a day of evolvement” for ICRF to better serve the Indian community in Bahrain.
“As a final note, I must extend my deepest gratitude to the volunteers, the Bahraini government, the Indian Embassy and our sponsors for their unwavering support,” he concludes. “We stand on the shoulders of these iconic community leaders.”

ENGINEERING THE BEST OF SOLUTIONS
For nearly half a century, Albarq Electrical Services has been a cornerstone in the Kingdom, offering a comprehensive range of electrical and engineering solutions. As part of our India in Bahrain supplement, Tanima Chakraborty, Chairperson of Albarq Group of Companies, highlights the company’s successes and extensive service portfolio.
“Albarq offers electrical installation, energy management, electrical design and engineering, testing and inspection, automation and control systems, project management, emergency electrical services and maintenance and repair,” Ms. Chakraborty says. This breadth of services ensures Albarq meets the diverse needs of residential, commercial and industrial clients, maintaining high standards of safety and efficiency.
Her journey with Albarq began after she completed her Master’s degree in Business Administration. She founded Biolights, providing electrical solutions efficiently and cost-effectively, which laid the foundation for her career in the industry. “Following my father’s passing, I stepped in as Vice Chairperson of Albarq and expanded my knowledge in electrical engineering with the help of various professional courses, along with the support of my business partners, mentorship from industry experts and building a robust network. Over time, I demonstrated my capabilities and became the Chairperson,” she says. Her leadership has seen Albarq grow, taking on projects of all scales across Bahrain.
When it comes to designing full-service electrical layouts, Ms. Chakraborty emphasises several critical factors: “Costeffectiveness, safety, efficiency and functionality are paramount,” she says. “Albarq’s designs adhere to EWA and international standards, ensuring future scalability and coordination with other systems like HVAC and IT for optimal performance.”
The process of wiring and installation for both residential and commercial projects is meticulous. For residential projects, Ms. Chakraborty explains: “It starts with understanding the client’s needs, followed by planning, obtaining approvals and conducting the wiring and installation.” She notes that common challenges include space constraints in older homes and balancing budget with compliance. In commercial projects, the complexity increases, requiring approval from consultants or contractors, coordination with EWA and adherence to tight timelines.
“Challenges often revolve around integrating large-scale systems and meeting tight project timelines within budget constraints while ensuring quality and regulatory compliance, and integrating electrical systems with building automation,” she reveals.
Albarq’s approach to emergency power solutions, such as generators, is comprehensive. The process starts with assessing the client’s power needs and site conditions, followed by planning, design and skilled installation. Regular maintenance and monitoring ensure reliability during power outages, providing clients with dependable backup power.
Staying at the forefront of the electrical industry requires continuous learning and adaptation. “We attend industry conferences, conduct training programmes and stay informed through online resources and client feedback, ensuring our services remain cutting-edge,” Ms. Chakraborty shares.
Safety is another core value at Albarq, with rigorous measures in place to protect employees and clients. “We adhere to international and local safety standards, provide continuous training and ensure the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) at all job sites,” she remarks. Regular inspections and maintenance of tools and equipment further ensure a safe working environment.
As a woman leading in a traditionally maledominated field, Ms. Chakraborty brings unique perspectives to her role. “Diversity drives innovation and creativity,” she says. She advocates for recognising the strengths both men and women bring to the table and emphasises the importance of collaboration for achieving balanced and effective leadership. “For women aspiring to leadership roles in the electrical or broader technical services industry, I advise them to be willing to take risks and step out of their comfort zone,” she advises. “Build strong technical expertise, seek mentorship and actively network to challenge stereotypes and support each other, fostering a collaborative environment.”
Looking to the future, Albarq aims to expand its service offerings by incorporating clean electricity and emerging technologies with a customer-centric approach, focusing on sustainability and exploring opportunities for geographic expansion.
Ms. Chakraborty takes inspiration from her Indian heritage. “The concept of ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam,’ meaning ‘The World is One Family,’ inspires me to cultivate empathy, compassion and kindness towards all people.”

Discussing current trends in the electrical and construction industries, Mr. Nair highlights the significant support from Middle Eastern governments for the industrial sector. “Our leaders are extending all possible support to the industrial sector. YEARS OF EXCELLENCE OF AMADGROUPINTERNATIONAL
Crafting Unforgettable Moments
When it comes to creating unforgettable experiences, few do it better than Mushtaq Ali, the Founder and Creative Director of Celebrations Events W.L.L. With a remarkable journey that spans more than two decades, he has transformed the event planning industry and now brings his expertise to Bahrain. In an exclusive interview for our India in Bahrain supplement, he shares the story behind his company, his motivations and what sets Celebrations Events apart.
Mr. Ali’s journey is rooted in his background as an interior designer. “Space planning comes to us by default. When I see a space, the mind starts working full time,” he explains. “This natural inclination towards spatial design seamlessly translated into event planning, where the challenge and excitement lie in transforming spaces within tight timeframes.
“Whether it is 10,000sqm or 2,000sqm, an event such as a wedding has to happen usually within 10 days. The ability to quickly conceptualise and execute large-scale designs has been the primary driving force behind the success of Celebrations Events, I believe.”
Originally based in Kolkata, India, before moving to Pune, Celebrations Events has now expanded its footprint to Bahrain, a strategic move driven by the desire to tap into the Middle Eastern market. “We chose Bahrain to be our second point where we could operate,” Mr. Ali explains. “Thanks to the help of the Bahrain Tourism and Exhibitions Authority (BTEA), this expansion has allowed us to bring 18-20 years of experience to a new market.”
One of the key motivations for his transition from interior design to event planning is the fast turnaround time and the diversity of projects. Unlike lengthy interior design projects that can take months or even years, event planning offers the thrill of rapid transformation and immediate results. This dynamic environment keeps Mushtaq and his team constantly engaged and creatively challenged.
At the heart of Celebrations Events’ philosophy is the commitment to turning clients’ dreams into reality. Mr. Ali emphasises the importance of understanding the clients’ vision and desires. “Our clients are so well-travelled that they have already decided where they will have the wedding and exactly what they want,” he notes. This client-centric approach involves listening closely to clients and leveraging Celebrations Events’ vast experience to tweak and enhance their visions.
His team also places great importance on working closely with reliable vendors and forming strong relationships with hotels as they mutually know what is needed to deliver.
When it comes to destination weddings, Bahrain offers a unique allure. Mr. Ali highlights the country’s pristine beaches and the support from the BTEA and Bahrain Economic Development Board (EDB). “Bahrain as a country is an obvious place to host a wedding, especially as hotels here are absolutely flexible,” he says. The support from local authorities has been instrumental in making Bahrain an attractive destination for weddings and events.
As Celebrations Events continues to grow, he remains optimistic about the future. “We assure you that we will be able to deliver 90 percent of what you dream and think about, whether it’s a social or a corporate event,” he states confidently. “We will do whatever is within our means to make things happen.”

Apple Centre in Bahrain to becoming an Apple Premium Reseller and Apple Authorised Service Provider.
iWorld Bahrain’s story began as the island’s inaugural Apple partner. A significant turning point came in 2013 when changes in Apple’s partner strategy prompted the company to rebrand as iWorld Connect. This rebranding was not just a change of name but a complete transformation to meet the challenges of a more competitive market and the threat of grey market suppliers.
The culmination of these efforts was the opening of the largest Apple Premium Reseller Store at the Avenues mall in 2018, a milestone that Mr. Mangle considers pivotal. “This store featured an Apple Authorised Service Centre, the only such one within a mall in Bahrain,” he explains. “The expansion continued with another premium store at City Centre Bahrain in 2021 and a major upgrade of the landmark Exhibition Road outlet to become an Apple Mono Brand Store.
Mr. Mangle holds a degree in engineering and a Master’s in Finance Management, complemented by completing the Entrepreneurial Edge programme at London Business School, which refined his leadership skills. With more than 30 years of experience, mostly at Almoayyed International Group, he has advanced through various roles to his current position as General Manager.
As such, customer service is the cornerstone of both his and iWorld’s success. The company employs a multifaceted approach to ensure that it not only meets but exceeds customer expectations. “Our staff undergo rigorous Apple-approved training and certification programmes to stay updated on the latest product features and troubleshooting techniques,” Mr. Mangle notes.
Moreover, iWorld’s stores are designed to provide an engaging environment for customers to explore Apple products. The inclusion of workshops and events further enhances customer experience, helping them make the most of their devices. “Our robust after-sales support includes warranty
services and advanced cybersecurity solutions,” Mr. Mangle elaborates.
A critical element of iWorld’s success is its dual expertise in retail and ICT system integration. Whilst iWorld focuses on Apple products and services, iWorld Connect excels in providing comprehensive ICT solutions across a wide range of technologies. “This positions us uniquely as one of the region’s leading ICT system integrators capable of delivering integrated solutions across diverse technologies,” he points out.
Specialising in Apple solutions for sectors like education, hospitality, healthcare and manufacturing, iWorld leverages Apple’s innovative technologies to excel in initiatives such as Apple in Education, hospitality management solutions and healthcare technology integration.
Looking ahead, Mr. Mangle is optimistic about the future, highlighting the transformative potential of advancements in AI, cloud computing, cybersecurity, and digital transformation. “By staying ahead of technological trends, iWorld is prepared to navigate the dynamic market and continue its legacy of excellence,” he asserts.

With more than 30 years in the automotive industry, Mohammed Zaki’s vast experience spans across the globe makes him an ideal fit for the General Manager of First Motors, the exclusive dealer of Hyundai, Genesis and Geely vehicles in Bahrain. Kristian Harrison sat down with him to find out more about his career and leadership style.
Born into a family with deep roots in the car business, Mr. Zaki’s career began in the United States, where he handled Nissan for 13 years. Following this, he moved to Warrington, UK, where he managed Volkswagen for seven years, and later transitioned to Bahrain. “I’ve been in Bahrain for 14 years, working initially with Zayani Motors before moving to First Motors about seven months ago,” he shares. “Bahrain is one of the safest countries with low crime rates and a welcoming community for expats. It’s a stress-free place, and I’ve decided to make it my home.”
Mr. Zaki’s extensive experience is not just limited to managerial roles. He is a graduate in automotive and heavy equipment engineering from Ferris State University in Michigan, USA, an academic background which laid a strong foundation for his practical experiences. “I saw an ad in the newspaper to sell cars, which caught my interest. Thankfully, I excelled in the field and gradually moved up the ranks,” he recalls. This progression saw him handling various brands and taking on increasing responsibilities, eventually leading him to his current role at First Motors.
The automotive industry has evolved significantly since Mr. Zaki started his career.
“The technology in the automotive industry is advancing rapidly, especially with brands like Hyundai and Genesis,” he notes. “They are premium brands, competing with and bettering its competitors in their segments, and they offer exceptional comfort and advanced technology.”
Managing three brands comes with its own set of challenges and opportunities. “I have managers handling each marque, and my role is to support them by negotiating with manufacturers on volume and pricing. It’s about having a good team that can drive the business forward,” he explains. “My leadership style emphasises teamwork and an open-door policy, allowing anyone in my team to approach me directly with ideas or concerns.” One of the key factors that sets First Motors apart is its commitment to customer service. “We were awarded International Dealer of the Year in 2023, a testament to our excellent customer service,” Mr. Zaki states proudly. “We follow up with our customers and resolve any issues immediately, ensuring they are satisfied not just
at the point of sale but throughout their ownership experience. If they are treated well, there is a good chance they may come back to us five or even 10 years later to upgrade, or recommend us to their family and friends.”
As for his future plans for First Motors, Mr. Zaki aims to increase the market share of Hyundai and Genesis in Bahrain. “My ultimate goal is to establish ourselves as the top brands in the country,” he declares. “I have an extremely strong relationship with our global headquarters in Korea and I know the manufacturers really believe in the Bahrain market and our team.”
Outside of his professional life, Mr. Zaki is actively involved in the community and enjoys singing and sponsoring various cultural events. “I love to network and meet people. I sponsor programmes across different languages and religions to create awareness for our brands,” he says. “I take an active participation in various societies, including the Bahrain British Business Forum and several Indian communities, as I love to help others and give back to this great country.”
Weaving Dreams into Tailored Perfection
In the heart of Bahrain’s booming industry revolution, a young entrepreneur Faizel Josh Rehman is weaving a unique story of ambition and cultural exchange. His company, Maxstar Uniforms is more than just a uniform garment supplier – it’s a testament to the burgeoning spirit of the region’s Indian expatriate community. We explore his entrepreneurial vision.
Maxstar Uniforms has become a leading provider of corporate and hospitality apparel, along with bespoke suits for both men and woman, effectively catering to Bahrain’s diverse clientele. But Maxstar’s success isn’t just centred on fabrics and stitching; it is the culmination of the vision of a young Indian entrepreneur who dared to dream big.
Mr. Rehman’s journey began in India, where a keen eye for design and a passion for textiles were nurtured from a very young age. Driven by an entrepreneurial spirit, he set his sights on the vibrant business landscape of Bahrain. Here, he saw an opportunity to fill a gap in the uniform market – a need for high-quality, custom-designed
uniforms that reflected the evolving corporate culture.
The successful business, Maxstar Uniforms, wasn’t built overnight. With unwavering dedication and a commitment to quality, Mr. Rehman meticulously built his brand. He prioritised the use of premium fabrics and employed skilled tailors to ensure each uniform embodied both comfort and style. This dedication to quality, alongside a keen understanding of client needs, has positioned Maxstar as a trusted partner for businesses across Bahrain.
Beyond impeccable tailoring, he recognises the power of a well-designed uniform. “I work closely with clients to understand their brand

briefed us on our treatments. Before making our way to the treatment rooms, we had a consultation with the doctor. The alternate medicine practitioners at SriSoukya are highly experienced and treat and manage myriad medical ailments that range from arthritis, sciatica, digestion issues, autoimmune disorders, postpartum treatments etc. Ayurveda treatments treat the root cause of the medical issue and not simply the symptoms.
With stress and other factors at play, hair fall has been a concern of mine in recent years. Hence, I opted for a relaxing head and scalp treatment. With room’s lights dimmed and soothing music playing in the background, I
After making me comfortable, the practitioner studied my scalp before warming up a fragrant concoction of oils. Carefully sectioning off my hair, it was applied thoroughly following which she gave me a soothing head massage. It took everything in me to not fall asleep during this relaxing experience. This was then left on my hair while she mixed herbs together to create a thick paste. The sensation of this cool paste being applied to my scalp and the lengths of my hair was phenomenal. Moringa, curry leaves, neem among other nutrient-dense ingredients are generally incorporated into the treatments. Later, I was shown to the bathroom where I was to wash my hair before rinsing it with two variations of
herbal water. It was then that I observed the instant effects of the treatment – my scalp was squeaky clean. Once finished, she combed and dried my hair before fumigating my hair with incense. She explained that this too was an essential part of the treatment, as it had therapeutic effects, but I was not one to complain as it smelled divine and remained in my hair until the next wash.
Meanwhile, my colleagues enjoyed a heavenly, 60-minute full body massage – the perfect way to relieve stress and soothe aching muscles. With knots expertly kneaded away by the skilled masseurs, every muscle was relaxed. The ambience was serene and calming, too, creating the perfect atmosphere for unwinding. Here’s what one of them had to say: “It was an hour of escape and rejuvenation. I left feeling refreshed and renewed, as if I had taken a mini-vacation. I highly recommend this experience to anyone seeking ultimate relaxation.”
After our blissful treatments, we explores the attached Ayurvedic medicine pharmacy where natural health supplements, over the counter ayurvedic skin, hair and body care products are available.
SriSoukya encourages all to experience and make preventative medicine and healing a way of life. We know for sure that we left feeling like we had taken care of our body, mind and spirit, and will soon be returning.

For Dr. Dutta, teaching has been a lifelong passion. Stemming from her tenure as a professor since 2002, she has consistently felt a deep-seated obligation to enhance the education sector. “Teaching has always been my passion, and I find the most satisfaction when I witness my students thinking beyond conventional boundaries to unlock their true potential,” she says.
In 2016, as she began facilitating her daughter’s academic journey, she felt overwhelmed by the myriad of decisions and paths that lay before her. In the absence of someone to guide her, she took the time to study and research the most effective higher education practices, adding to her expertise and knowledge from her years as an educator. “I started out by advising my daughter and her friends on parent forums, and soon I became the go-to mum on the topic,” she explains.
ENABLING ACADEMIC SUCCESS
Credible-I is a career and college consulting firm that has become a mainstay in the Kingdom thanks to its success in guiding many young adults towards their higher education dreams. As part of our India in Bahrain supplement, Dr. Arpita Dutta shares her entrepreneurial path in establishing this business, as well as what inspires and challenges her.
and directions to follow. Sometimes they may prefer a particular educational institution, but alternative institutions located in various regions of the globe that specialise in their desired field of study offer the opportunity to collaborate with highly knowledgeable professors who can significantly enhance their learning experience. This is where our experience and knowledge are valuable inputs in their decision-making process.”
The pair work closely with students to identify their unique strengths and help them use those strengths to develop a strong application. However, this process requires a lot of introspection and self-awareness.
In 2018, a close friend suggested that she should create a business and infrastructure to methodically support these students. With a focus on sincerity rather than financial gain, Credible-I was born.
However, doing all the work alone would have been an impossible task, so she sought out Jayati Chowdhury, an experienced English teacher and writer with a collection of published poems and an ongoing blog. Ms. Chowdhury works as an academic consultant for university applications to help with the rigorous process of creating essays to complement student profiles, which are crucial to successful admissions.
Central to Credible-I’s ethos is a focus on students’ individuality and unique needs. “Every child is special and has a life path that can suit them best, whether they know it yet or not,” Ms. Dutta argues. “The challenge is connecting their dreams to concrete steps
“Amidst the demands of academic assignments, homework and extracurricular activities, these children are deprived of the opportunity for introspection and selfdiscovery,” Ms. Chowdhury asserts. “Each individual has valuable life experiences that they frequently fail to recognise. I derive immense satisfaction from engaging in meaningful conversations with children, guiding them to gain clarity about their identity and aspirations. It’s gratifying to watch them grow through this process.”
Credible-I has received glowing testimonials from students and parents, with clients routinely being granted admissions to top schools both in the US and around the world, including Ivy League Schools and Imperial College London. With such a decorated track record behind them, they look forward to helping many more students connect with their dreams.

Mind Over Matter
Hemant Joshi, a three-time World Memory Champion and six-time Indian National Memory Champion, recently undertook the ambitious challenge of memorising 5,000 random digits for the Guinness Book of Records. Kristian Harrison spoke with him to find out more about his incredible achievements and methods.
“It had always been my ardent wish to do a demo in Bahrain in front of a live audience,” Mr. Joshi says. “I knew the stakes were high and the preparation was excruciating, but the desire to test my neurons was irresistible. On the day of the event, despite initial trepidation, a sense of calm prevailed and upon completing it I felt a deep sense of accomplishment and gratitude.”
Mr. Joshi’s memory techniques are rooted in ancient practices. “The most basic technique in memorising is to convert abstract data into concrete terms, mainly images, and place them in different locations,” he explains. This method, known as the ‘memory palace’, involves creating organised memory locations and using a coding system to store and recall data efficiently. “It is important to move inside your memory palace swiftly while simultaneously coding and decoding the data,” he adds.
Preparation for such feats requires rigorous training. “Before any major national or international championship, I normally spend four-to-five hours a day for a couple of months,” Mr. Joshi reveals. He utilises idle time, such as while on a treadmill or waiting in queues, to practice memory techniques. “There are three secrets to being an expert in any field: practice, practice and practice,” he says.
“There is no such thing as good memory and bad memory. There is only trained and untrained memory. Start with baby steps, then seek expert training and find a good mentor. For children, early introduction to memory training can significantly improve grades and career prospects,” he believes.
Remaining motivated in memory training, which Joshi describes as a “lonely sport,” is challenging. “It requires hard work, perseverance and loads of patience,” he notes. “You must set priorities and manage time effectively amidst numerous distractions.”
Mr. Joshi’s expertise as an NLP trainer has been instrumental in sharpening his sensory acuity and managing internal resources like creativity, confidence, conviction and courage.
Memorising and recalling ability, he believes, is an interplay of all five human senses.
As a professional speaker, Mr. Joshi prioritises the audience’s interests. “A good speaker treats audiences’ interests as paramount,” he argues. “It’s vitally important when learning memory techniques to perform confidently without relying heavily on notes or slides. Adding humour to your speech has a lasting impact too,” he adds.
His published literary contributions include From Survival to Significance: A Journey, a biography of the late Abdulla Nass, and Success at Your Doorsteps: It’s Knocking, a self-help book. He incorporates learnings from his education, experiences and NLP techniques in his writing.
Balancing his demanding fields, Mr. Joshi emphasises the symbiotic relationship between personal and professional lives. “It
is not just working hard that is enough; we need to work smartly,” he notes. He finds inspiration in biographies and religious texts like the Bhagavad Gita, Ramayana, and Mahabharata. He also credits his friend, Vikrantdada Chaphekar, for sustaining his interest in memory training.
Looking ahead, Mr. Joshi is working on a book on memory enhancement aimed at students, professionals, public speakers and elderly citizens, which he hopes to publish by March 2025. He also plans to publish a fiction manuscript next year and institutionalise training on soft skills development.
“I personally believe that God has given me a lot more than I truly deserve,” he concludes, whilst expressing gratitude to his wellwishers, trainers, mentors and friends for their love, guidance and encouragement. “I feel truly blessed.”

Founded in 2016 as a branch of the Ahmed Mansoor Al-A’ali (AMA) Group, Myna Water has emerged as a premium brand of mineral water in Bahrain. Kristian Harrison finds out how the brand has positioned itself as a top choice for consumers seeking highquality, locally-sourced bottled water under the leadership of CEO João Lopes.
The name ‘Myna’ holds significant meaning, reflecting the brand’s connection to Bahrain’s natural environment and heritage. “Myna in Arabic translates to ‘Our Water,’ encapsulating the values that are core to our brand identity,” Mr. Lopes shares. “This strong local connection is further reinforced by our commitment to maintaining the mineral balance in its water, tailored to Bahrain’s environment. The mineral balance in Myna Water maintains proper hydration, replenishing and regulating important bodily functions, making it an ideal daily drinking choice for consumers.”
In a competitive market, Myna Water distinguishes itself through an unwavering commitment to quality and customer service. Prioritising prompt attention to ad hoc needs, combined with rigorous quality controls and sustainability practices, sets Myna Water apart from its competitors.
“Our goal was to provide consumers with a refreshing product that exemplifies purity and safety,” Mr. Lopes explains. “This vision was
realised through leveraging Bahrain’s unique natural water resources. Our state-of-the-art production facility employs a multi-stage purification process, using reverse osmosis, UV sterilisation and ozonation. The water is then bottled in a fully automated, hygienic environment, preserving its premium quality.”
The AMA Group’s long-standing reputation in Bahrain significantly supports Myna Water. As a trusted local conglomerate with diversified business interests, the company’s involvement provides Myna with a strong foundation and instils confidence in consumers.
Despite its success, Myna Water faces challenges. “One of the key tasks is ensuring a consistent year-round supply to meet growing demand, especially during the hot summer months,” Mr. Lopes reveals. “To address this, we closely monitor demand and have invested in infrastructure upgrades to maximise extraction and production capabilities.
priority for our brand, which follows several initiatives and practices to minimise our environmental impact. We are committed to sustainable practices, including using energy-efficient equipment, minimising waste and exploring renewable energy sources. We also prioritise recycled and recyclable packaging materials, furthering our commitment to sustainability.”
Looking ahead, Myna Water has ambitious plans for product development, market expansion and community engagement. The company plans to expand its product offerings to include sustainable packaging for smaller packs, as well as flavoured and sparkling variants. Additionally, it is exploring opportunities to export the brand regionally and deepen its community engagement through initiatives that promote water conservation and the benefits of optimum water consumption in Bahrain.

The one-site approach allows older students to take part in supporting their younger peers on their educational journey.
BSB strongly believes in the happiness of the entire family and that this benefits students at school. Therefore, BSB is the only school in Bahrain with a full-time Parent Liaison Executive. They are on hand to settle BSB families, not just into the school, but into life in the Middle East, helping with everything from housing to activities, memberships, and the thousands of small tasks that can cause unnecessary stress at home. BSB parents also have unparalleled access to the school with special classes especially created for them, which include Arts, Pilates, Gardening, Arabic Language, Sound Healing, Yoga, and much more. BSB strongly believes that a happy family means a happy child and that a happy child will succeed at school.

ACME Gala
ACME hosted a gala event for employees and their families at the Gulf Hotel Convention Centre, themed “We are On Cloud”. The theme reflects the company’s achievements in the cloud business in particular as well the IT business in general. It was a fantastic opportunity for everyone to unwind, socialize and celebrate together.
Let’s Get Technical!
Bahrain Polytechnic has recently relaunched its apprenticeship programmes, aiming to address the skills gap in the local job market and provide more employment opportunities for Bahraini youth. Bahrain Polytechnic CEO, Ciarán Ó Catháin, told Bahrain This Month more about this initiative.
“These programmes are designed to meet the needs of our industry partners who are seeking skilled technicians,” says Mr. Ó Catháin. “Not everyone needs to go to university; there is a demand for well-trained technical staff in various sectors.”
The revamped apprenticeship programmes, which take inspiration from successful models in Europe and Singapore, include training in essential trades such as plumbing, electrical work, air conditioning and welding. The three-year curricula are structured to blend practical on-the-job training with theoretical instruction at Bahrain Polytechnic, ensuring a comprehensive learning experience.
Mr. Ó Catháin emphasises the importance of hands-on experience, stating that 70 percent of the programme is practical, allowing apprentices to apply their learning in real-world settings and ensuring they are job-ready upon completion.
The impact on youth employment is already visible. “We have seen significant interest from companies and have partnered with around 80 businesses for the initial phases,” Mr. Ó Catháin notes. “These partnerships not only provide
apprentices with employment but also ensure that industries have a steady pipeline of skilled workers.”
The programme also aims to foster entrepreneurial skills among young Bahrainis, with the potential for apprentices to start their own businesses, thus creating jobs and contributing to the economy. “We want our apprentices to see themselves not just as employees but as future employers,” he states.
Furthermore, the apprenticeship programmes are inclusive, allowing expatriates to enrol, albeit without the same financial support available to Bahraini nationals. “These programmes are a win-win for our students and our industry partners, providing valuable skills that are essential for Bahrain’s economic growth,” Mr. Ó Catháin concludes.
Bahrain India Society Dinner
Bahrain India Society hosted a dinner with the BIS board along with Indian Ambassador, HE Vinod K. Jacob, at the Brazil Rodizio Lounge, Adliya.
Ready to SUSHISAMBA!
The world-renowned restaurant SUSHISAMBA has been the talk of the town since it opened atop Conrad Bahrain Financial Harbour. With a fantastic blend of cuisines, a breathtaking view of the city and a vibrant atmosphere, Farah Baig was charmed by her SUSHISAMBA experience this month.
Bahrain’s burgeoning hospitality industry is constantly drumming up attention among diners with the opening of new restaurants across the island. While this might be the case, none have garnered the level of excitement as seen with the opening of SUSHISAMBA. The restaurant has a presence in Las Vegas, London, Dubai, Doha and Edinburgh; so, naturally, the addition of Bahrain to its roster is exciting.
The question one might ask now is: Ok, but what’s all the fuss about? Well, what I can tell you is that SUSHISAMBA has a very unique take on Japanese, Peruvian and Brazilian cuisine, all in a fun and creative atmosphere. All dressed up and ready to devour the experience, I made my way to the top floor of Conrad Bahrain Financial Harbour one evening. From the moment the elevator doors opened, I could tell it was going to be a memorable evening – the venue was absolutely buzzing. Upbeat music, the banter of happy diners and rich aromas filled the air.
Our warm hosts gave us a tour of the venue and revealed fantastic indoor and outdoor seating options, but with temperatures on the higher end, being seated indoors was the natural choice. As we scoured the printed set menus before us, it was clear that we had a veritable feast in store for us. Celebrating the fantastic night of dining ahead, we clinked our creatively concocted mocktails.
Now for the food. Starting off our experience were the delightfully crisp, thin and colourful Samba Chips and Edamame with sea salt and lime. These were followed by the Wagyu Gyoza with kabocha puree and sweet soy which was made with high-quality A5 Wagyu beef. Scooping up some of the puree with the dumplings, we took our first bite
to discover that they were exceptionally juicy. The dumpling casing was slightly crisp with a great mix of textures, and the flavour of the beef went well with the rich and creamy kobucha.
Next the Samba Salad which was a kaleidoscope of baby spinach, grilled kabocha, honey truffle ponzu, shavings of radish, carrot, apple and mango dressing. This salad was refreshing with its flavours elevated with a light, sweet and tangy dressing.
Bringing delicious Peruvian flavours to our palate next were the Yellowtail Taquitos with avocado and miso. The casing was perfectly crisp but let me tell you that these flavours were just perfection! The fish had the texture of ceviche and fresh citrusy flavours. This along with the freshness of finely chopped lettuce and radish came together beautifully.
Warming up our chopstick skills, we then tucked into the bowl of Shrimp Tempura. As with all of their dishes so far, SUSHISAMBA seemed to have perfected it. The spicy mayo gave the dish a fiery note while the black truffle vinaigrette added a new dimension of flavour.
As we waited for our next course, we admired the stunning views of the city right from our table and were able to spot iconic landmarks including the Bahrain World Trade Centre nearby and the picturesque Muharraq bridge in the distance.
Making its way to us in grand style was the Churrasco Rio Grande. Heads turned as this fantastic Brazilian platter of masterfully grilled ribeye, chorizo and picanha was set on our table – it was a meat-lover’s dream. Black beans, collard greens and a mango salsa served as the best toppings for these fine meats. Each meat was purely addictive with the ribeye being melt-in-your-mouth tender while the chorizo was just tasty and bursting with flavour. A slice of orange served as a palate cleanser before the next course. What we devoured as sides for this delectable feast were the Broccolini with pickled ginger, which had a delicate sweetness to it, and the Aji Rice. While each dish was absolutely sensational so far, there was one thing a night at SUSHISAMBA just would not be complete without – sushi. Like a dramatic Japanese fiesta, a magnificent platter of sushi with a rich variety of classic and more creative varieties was presented to us. Maki rolls, nigiri and sashimi for every preference were a sight to behold. Sampling the freshness of the fish first, we dipped the Toro Sashimi (tuna belly) in soy before taking a bite and it was sensational. The Unagi Nigiri with torched freshwater eel was absolutely irresistible with a drizzle of sweet soy, and one that I would highly recommend to anyone who visits.
Diving into SUSHISAMBA’s creative varieties now I just had to try the El Topo, which has been a crowd favourite for 25 years. It’s not everyday that you see melted mozzarella and crispy shallots on a sushi roll but those are precisely some of El Topo’s ingredients. This
ingredients and textures playfully combined in a roll that is purely delicious and remarkable.
The Tiger Maki came next with its luscious mix of crab meat, shrimp tempura, wasabi mayo, beetroot yogurt, eel sauce and furikake. Tiger Maki has grown to be a top seller and it’s quite clear why. Neo Tokyo with tuna, tempura flakes, aji pana and spicy mayo was delectable too!
For a festive finish, we were presented yet another platter… this time with mouth-watering desserts! A clear nod to Japanese cuisine was the assortment of mochi with a luscious white chocolate ganache which were cool and refreshing. The Chocolate Banana cake topped with a crisp plantain chip was just decadent with the sweet maple butter and ice cream.
Ultimately what grabbed our attention and epitomised SUSHISAMBA’s vibrant concept was the ‘Welcome to the Rainforest’. This beautiful bowl of dessert was almost too beautiful to tamper with and captured the essence of its name. This bowl features two perfectly crafted “pebbles” resting on “soil”. Except the pebbles were fashioned from exquisite Valrhona Chocolate and filled with creamy vanilla bean ice cream and strawberry mouse. Cracking into these and eating a spoonful was an experience and the flavour was sensational. This was relished with the “soil” which was a rick mix of almond and chocolate. Creative, colourful and absolutely unforgettable!
By the end of the night, it was clear that SUSHISAMBA doesn’t just serve you incredible food, but rather crafts exquisite experiences

the creative helm of acclaimed female chef, Mirsha Moreno. This modern Italian Osteria is renowned for bringing reinterpretations of Italy’s classic dishes to life, right here in Bahrain, so I looked forward to the experience.
Local, seasonal and fresh ingredients made in-house are key factors that make dining at Primavera special. We started our experience with a light Mediterranean Salad – a fine combination of roasted zucchini, bell peppers, crushed pistachios and the multi-awarded Marfuga Extra Virgin Olive Oil. After days of indulging, this was a welcome, healthy dish for the evening.
While we waited for our next course, we indulged in Primavera’s signature bread selection which includes Pane Carasau flatbread, grissini sticks, focaccia and sour dough bread rolls.
As a rich aroma filled the air, we discovered one of their gourmet Neopolitan pizza’s making its way to our table.
The Pizza Tartufo – topped with truffle-mushroom cream, grated scamorza cheese and mozzarella cheese and finished with truffle shavings – was spectacular. These premium ingredients topped dough fermented over two days making it the best pizza I’ve had in Bahrain. While great on its own, a drizzle of
Italian Indulgence
Few restaurants in the Kingdom have perfected their fine dining experience to the standard at Primavera located at The Ritz-Carlton Bahrain. As part of her gastronomical
escapades this month, Farah Baig indulged in Primavera’s delicious culinary creations and warm hospitality, while discovering its exclusive premium ingredients.
just outstanding.
Being a Mediterranean country, seafood is quite popular in Italy, and Primavera has found a way to blend this love for seafood with Bahrain’s bounty of fresh clams, hammour and more. The Spaghetti Alle Vongole features clams sourced from the local fish market and was remarkably light with fresh tomatoes and aromatic herbs bringing the dish together while allowing you to enjoy the flavour of each ingredient. The baked hammour served with a side of tortellinis was just delicious with each tortellini revealing a sweet tomato filling.
Satiating our craving for rich Italian food was the masterfully braised Wagyu Beef Cheek which was tender enough to pull apart with just our forks. Mashed potatoes, the traditional balsamic vinegar and a thick gravy complemented it.
The Ricotta Salad featuring their ricotta cheese which is made in-house was a creamy indulgence finishedwith a drizzle of traditional balsamic vinegar from Venturini Baldini, which has been aged for 25 years, and adds a unique sweet and sour flavour.
Next, elevated by Primavera’s art of culinary mastery were two decadent risottos: Risotto Verde and Risotto Al Funghi Selvatici. The Risotto Verde gets its name from its delicious greens including fresh Rocket, Kale and Spinach paste. Grated pecorino and parmesan cheese, sour cream and lemon juice added a pleasant creaminess to the dish. The Risotto Al Funghi Selvatici – a decadent mushroom risotto – was the perfect choice for those who love mushrooms. The bite of the mushrooms coupled with the perfectly cooked rice was
To sweeten our experience, we indulged in the Strained Strawberry Yogurt, Sicilian Cheesecake and Tiramisu from Primavera’s trolley. The cheesecake was devoured with the spoonful eventhough the clear favourite was the Tiramisu which can be made with your choice of ingredients, of course, with essential ingredients including the decadent marscapone and delicious cocoa nibs. The contrast of flavours and the playfulness of the ingredients made each dessert truly unique.
It goes without saying that Primavera’s new menu and warm hospitality make it a must-visit on the island. We’ve already planned

TheGreat Kebab Factory (TGKF) has perfected over 400 recipes since the concept came to life some 50 years ago. So, naturally, I was thrilled to learn that TGKF was ready to serve diners in Bahrain as a venture under JOZGROUP W.L.L.
My first impression was that the restaurant is incredibly inviting and tastefully decorated with royal blue furnishings and gold accents making it ideal for celebratory lunches or dinners, or even a mid-week indulgence. TGKF offers diners vegetarian and nonvegetarian feasts served at your table.
To whet our appetite, we were served a tomato shorba that was poured out of a kettle and into glasses. Despite being piping hot, it was refreshing even on a hot summer day.
Our host explained that dining at TGKF is meant to be a culinary journey and we were soon given our first taste of just that with TGKF’s signature dishthe Galauti Kebab. This beautifully plated kebab was served on freshly made flat bread. We were instructed to spread this smooth kebab, top it off with sliced onions and drizzle green

its blend of flavours and textures was just divine!
Next, we bit into the Punjabi Choosa – a perfectly marinated chicken drumstick. A lot of the kebabs are family recipes that have been perfected over time and feature TGKF spice mixes that have been imported from India. We appreciated the fact that the flavour penetrates all the way through which isn’t always the case with marinated meats.
its specialities. We enjoyed this as well as some rich chicken and mutton curries with the range of freshly-made naan.
All eyes were then on the smoked chicken tikka which was served off the skewer. It had a great smoky flavour and was juicy and tender. This, along with a host of kebabs, were relished with the range of chutneys and washed down with sips of expertly-crafted mocktails.
Tucking into some seafood, we relished the Fish 65 which was perfectly crisp and Hariyali Jinga (prawns) which had a hint of aromatic herbs. We savoured these with the range of condiments that are available at every table which includes green, tomato, and tamarind chutneys and raita (yoghurt).
The restaurant has several options for vegetarians (and Jain dishes too!) making the experience enjoyable for all. The Bharva Aloo which had a crisp exterior with sesame seeds showcased the culinary team’s prowess when it comes to making tasty vegetarian dishes. Its paneer, too, was soft and fresh and well prepared. Apart from its kebabs, TGKF is known for
While we were quite full by this point, a trio of dessert – Doodhi (white pumpkin) Halwa, Kheer (a light pudding) and Jalebi with Rabdi remained. The Doodhi Halwa, which was served in a cute, miniature pressure cooker was absolutely delicious. It had a creamy texture which went well with the light crunch of grated nuts. The Jalebi which is a favourite among TGKF’s diners was perfect for those with a sweet tooth – pure indulgence.
While several Indian restaurants may be dotted across Bahrain, it’s clear why
The Great Kebab Factory so special: it’s not your average dining experience… it’s a culinary journey!

A Thing of Beauty Genesis G
This July, I visited Salalah, Oman where I witnessed the grand unveiling of the redesigned Genesis G80 Series. For those who are yet to visit Salalah, the Khareef season (monsoon) turns the district into a beautiful, green paradise. It was here that journalists, influencers and brand partners from across the region converged as Genesis Middle East & Africa proudly unveiled the luxury sedans.
The G80 model represents the brand’s balance between tradition and innovation, showcasing its continued commitment to superior design, advanced technology, and top-tier hospitality. So, to commemorate the regional debut of the redesigned G80, the Korean luxury automotive brand hosted an immersive unveiling event. A lush green paradise, soothing rain, pure luxury and great hospitality all served as a fitting backdrop for us to discover the series’ design and technological advancements.
The Unveiling
Genesis recently debuted the newly designed G80 Series in Oman. Farah Baig shares her thoughts on the redesigned series following her experience with the luxurious vehicles against the picturesque
Held at an exclusive, custom-designed venue, the event showcased a profound experience in a stunning setting. The evening featured the unveiling of the G80 in the Royal & Sport trims. With design enhancements and exciting features in focus, we couldn’t help but look forward to the test drive the following day.
As a design-focused brand, Genesis has introduced fascinating models that embody the brand’s ‘athletic elegance’ design philosophy which is clear with the G80 too. Exploring the
quite literally a thing of beauty
Design and Technology Enhancements
During the unveiling, the front end of the G80 made quite the impression; the exterior of the G80 features a new dual-mesh design that accentuates the sophisticated look of the Two-Line Crest Grille, while the iconic Two-Line headlamps equipped with Micro Lens Array
(MLA) technology further emphasise the Korean
The 20-inch five double-spoke wheel design contributes to a dynamic aesthetic, reminiscent of an aircraft propeller, creating harmony with the parabolic line of the car’s side profile.
Rear diffusers with hidden mufflers sport a distinctive V-shaped chrome trim inspired by the Crest Grille, reflecting an eco-friendly aspect of the sedan in the age of electrification. We just couldn’t wait to get our hands on it the next morning.
Driving Through Salalah
I’ve already mentioned that it was Khareef season when we’d touched down in Salalah, but while the greenery was very welcome, the heavier than usual drizzle and occasional mist on the day of our test drive was not. We made our way to the briefing and explored the many features of the G80 Royal and G80 Sport ahead of our drives. We were divided into convoys and sets of three media personnel to each car, and were told that we would each have an opportunity to drive the Royal and Sport trims – what a thrill.
Walking out of the hall there may have been some frustration with the rain, but even then, I saw a silver lining; we may not be able to explore the full capabilities of the Sport trim, but we could get a real feel for the cars’ safety features. Besides, true luxury would keep you
distinguished ambiance for users. Spacious interiors and screens on the back of the driver and passenger seats allow you to indulge in entertainment during long drives. Driving along Salalah’s highways and routes along the Wadis allowed me to admire the many enhancements. The 27-inch-wide OLED display seamlessly combines the cluster and AVN (Audio, Video, Navigation) screen in a horizontal layout, extending to the centre fascia to enhance its high-tech sensibility. The touch-based HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning) system offers drivers ease of control, while the redesigned crystal-like Shift By Wire (SBW) ensures a comfortable grip and adds a feel of luxury.
I’d had my eye on from the night before. With windshield wipers on, I turned the gear dial into Drive and after carefully careening through the trickier of turns on the hills, put the pedal to the metal – instant thrill. The G80 Sport edition offers a dynamic and sporty appeal with its double-layered Crest Grille and expanded air intakes, but what makes it even more exciting are its enhanced driving performance capabilities. Its ability to pick up speed effortlessly and while minimising road noise was impressive and improved the overall luxury driving experience.
The G80 Sport 3.5 turbo engine model is equipped with Rear Wheel Steering (RWS), enabling smoother manoeuvering and enhanced agility. Additionally, it offers two powertrain options: a gasoline 2.5 turbo engine delivering 300 horsepower and 43.0 kgf·m of torque, and a gasoline 3.5 turbo engine producing 375 horsepower and 54.0 kgf·m of torque. The Electronic Limited Slip Differential (E-LSD) ensures stable control during highspeed driving which came in handy whilst driving on somewhat slippery roads.
Ultimately, what my passengers and I appreciated were the luxury sedan’s suite of advanced safety and convenience features; the OLED screen, for instance, has a camera display come up for your blind spot on the left when taking turns, which was a welcome feature on unfamiliar roads.

Let’s Get You Friendly MONEY and YOU
In this month’s edition of ‘Money and You’, Pria Masson acquaints us with inflation, value of money and other concepts that influence our money decisions.
I recently conducted a workshop on financial freedom for women and one of the things that stayed with me was a question: Are there certain businesses that just may not make money and that you should stay away from? What got me thinking was my own answer: Yes, if the numbers say so,
I will start with the most basic concepts that most of us know:
What is inflation and value of money?
Remember money acts as a tool to access goods and services. By extension, the value of money is how much you can buy. Earlier, I’ve mentioned that money is a finite resource. What this means is, the only way to increase money, is to earn it (including inheritance). However, money loses its value in more than one way. You could spend it or, if you keep it in a bank/cash, then over time, with inflation, the value of that money will go down. What that means is, if you could buy three outfits for that money when you kept it aside, you may be able to buy just two at the time that you wish to spend it. The adage, “money saved is money earned” only holds true if inflation doesn’t exist or if you convert that saving into an investment that earns more than inflation.
Why is money today worth a different amount than money tomorrow?
The other concept to remember is time value of money which says that “money today is worth more than money tomorrow”. Why is that? Because we do not know what the future holds, and we do not know the actual purchasing power of money in the future. We do know its value today. So, we assume that the risk of the unknown lowers the value of money in the future. Essentially, 100 needed in one year could mean you need to keep aside just approximately 90 (assuming 10 percent inflation).
What are interest rates?
It is nothing but the price of money based on a banks assessment of the specific risk that
because numbers don’t lie. 2+2=4 and that’s a universal truth. If you spend two and make nothing, that’s a loss of two. Numbers are a language that can be trusted always. Our relationship with money is one aspect, but, understanding the basics of money and numbers itself is non-negotiable.
you carry. Essentially, if you are a very low risk customer or a no-risk customer, you pay the lowest interest rate and if you are a startup with no collateral, you pay a higher interest rate.
How does all this add up?
If you need financing, personal or professional, use the above concepts to understand how much money you need depending on when you plan to spend that money. If there is a way to delay taking that money because you need it later, you may choose to take it now (as an added security measure) but, be aware that doing that adds a price. Finally, when planning for long term expenses and figuring out how much to need to save today, use the above concepts and then fill in inflation and use future rate calculators available online to realise how much you really need today.

LEADING LADIES FOR CHANGE
The Indian Ladies Association (ILA) was founded in 1956 by Leela Jashanmal and her friends as a place for Indian women to gather, indulge in creative activities and support each other as expats in Bahrain. ILA has grown from its humble beginnings to be an organisation renowned for its community outreach programmes, cultural shows and charitable initiatives. As part of our India in Bahrain supplement, ILA’s newly-elected Honorary President, Kiran Abhijit Mangle, tells us more about how ILA offers a platform for women to connect and contribute to Bahrain’s society.
Mrs. Mangle, who holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Economics and an MBA in Finance, brings a wealth of experience from various sectors including IT, oil and gas, and banking. Inspired by its mission and the impact of its work, she began her journey with ILA a few years ago. As the Honorary President, her goals are to strengthen community outreach, enhance personal and professional development opportunities and foster a more inclusive environment within ILA.
“This year, we want to focus on nurturing entrepreneurship in women and building stronger networks with the Bahrain community,” Mrs. Mangle explains. “One of our key initiatives is expanding the Sneha recreational centre, which offers free recreational and developmental activities for children with special needs, to expand its capacity and extending the Basic English Speak Easy course to a broader audience. We also have our ILA Connect Monthly Newsletter as a platform for sharing stories, recipes, poems and insights, fostering meaningful partnerships and promoting our sponsors.”
ILA’s mantra is to offer cultural and talent competitions, workshops and personal development sessions that promote growth while preserving Indian traditions. “Our commitment to community service allows members to make a meaningful impact,” Mrs. Mangle adds. “Additionally, we encourage leadership and skill development, providing opportunities for women to take on roles, hone skills and gain valuable experience.”
Some of ILA’s most important philanthropic initiatives are its outreach programmes, such as visits to old age homes, health camps and educational workshops for children. Most importantly, Sneha offers activities like yoga, ballet, dance, baking, painting and gardening free of charge and five days a week.
One of the most anticipated events on Bahrain’s social calendar is the ILA Dandiya Utsav, which celebrates the traditional Indian folk dance, Dandiya.
“This year, it will be held on September 20 at the Crowne Plaza Bahrain, featuring Disco Dandiya and Top Bollywood Dandiya and Garba songs by the renowned DJ Rahul,” Mrs. Mangle shares.
The event is expected to attract around 2,000 attendees from diverse cultural backgrounds across the GCC. In addition, ILA has a lineup of exciting events including a Thirst Drive for Workers Welfare, the launch of the ILA Connect Newsletter, health and wellness workshops and more.
ILA offers a plethora of activities to its members, including Empowering Women Entrepreneurs (EWE) with workshops, networking events, access to business incubator services, collaboration projects
and a mentorship programme. In addition, the ‘aaGaz’ Youth Empowerment Programmes provide leadership opportunities and skill development for young people while ILA’s Cultural Mosaic celebrates Indian culture through music, dance and art events.
Mrs. Mangle encourages all women of Indian origin in Bahrain to join the ILA.
“Together, we can achieve great things and make a positive difference in the lives of others. We continuously expand our programmes to have a greater community impact. Your support and involvement are crucial, so we invite everyone to participate in our events and initiatives.”
Women interested in joining ILA can apply for membership by visiting www.ilabahrain.com or contacting the association directly. Membership details include a registration fee and an annual membership fee, valid from January to December.
Noor Hamada’s journey as an artist began with a deep-seated family tradition of artistic talent. “Drawing is an inherited skill in my family,” she explains, tracing it back through generations. “My great-grandfather, despite losing his sight, was a skilled shipbuilder, while my grandfather Abbas was an art graduate from Egypt who carried his paintings worldwide.”
Inspired by the vibrant colours she encountered at markets as a child, Noor’s fascination with art and experimentation began early. As time passed, she was influenced more by personal experiences than specific artists. “I initially pursued realism in my work, and was drawn to its technical challenge despite a latent appreciation for abstract art. Over time, I embraced bold colours and innovative techniques, which marked a significant evolution in my artistic style,” she says.
When asked about her dream collaborations, Noor names Vincent Van Gogh and Gerhard Richter. Van Gogh’s emotional depth and vivid landscapes resonate deeply with her,
Art Imitating Life
Bahrain’s rising sketch artist, Noor Hamada, has been bringing art to life across the island garnering widespread attention. At a recent Woman This Month event, Shannan Peter Vaz chatted with Noor to find out more about her ingrained talent that was inspired across generations.
while Richter’s seamless blend of photorealism and abstraction continues to inspire her multifaceted approach to sketching.
Recognised as Bahrain’s first live fashion illustrator and first live wedding painter across the GCC, Noor attributes her popularity to her distinctive style and the enthusiastic recommendations of satisfied clients and admirers. Looking ahead, she aims to expand her artistic horizons through exploration of new mediums, international collaborations and mentorship initiatives aimed at inspiring the next generation of artists.
Noor’s sketches are characterised by a blend of realism, surrealism and abstract elements. Her ability to produce detailed fashion sketches in under eight minutes, as we witnessed firsthand at our event, showcases her proficiency and unique artistic flair.
“Early in my career, I faced challenges with the fast-paced demands of live sketching events,” she recounts. “However, through perseverance, innovation and commitment to
my growth as an artist, I developed techniques to efficiently produce over 80 sketches per event.”
Reflecting on her most rewarding experiences, Noor highlights collaborations with prestigious international brands such as Bahrain Jewellery Centre (BJC), Gucci, YSL, Bvlgari and Fendi, as well as exhibitions across the GCC, the United States, Finland (through the Civilisations Exhibition) and Egypt. Her accolades include the Shaikh Nasser bin Hamad Al-Khalifa Global Award for Youth Creativity, underscoring her global recognition and impact in the art world. Noor’s journey from inheriting a family talent to becoming an acclaimed sketch artist is a testament to her dedication and vision. Her impact on the global art community continues to grow, driven by a passion for innovation and a commitment to artistic excellence.
“As an artist, my advice to aspiring creatives is to embrace your unique style and continually seek inspiration from your surroundings. Never shy away from experimenting with different techniques and mediums, as this will help you discover your true artistic voice. Persistence and practice are key—every sketch, every painting and every challenge you face will contribute to your growth. Lastly, always stay passionate and dedicated to your craft, for it is through passion that your art will truly resonate with others,” she says.
Noor’s artistic journey is not just a personal evolution but also a story of artistic perseverance and creativity. As she continues to push the boundaries of her craft, her aspirations to further elevate her art and inspire others serve as a beacon for the future of Bahraini artistry.

Parenting a Child with ADHD
ADHD – it’s a term we hear more often these days, but that doesn’t mean that we all understand the full scope of it. Parenting columnist, Ouiam El Hassani, walks us through how we can understand and support our delightful, whirlwind children with ADHD.
Does your child resemble a miniature hurricane – constantly on the move and leaving a trail of unfinished tasks? Perhaps you find yourself repeating instructions like a mantra, only to be met with blank stares or impulsive actions. These could be signs of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), a common neurodevelopmental condition affecting millions of children worldwide. While raising a child with ADHD can be a whirlwind itself, understanding the condition and implementing positive strategies can create a nurturing environment for your child to flourish.
Imagine the brain as a complex orchestra. In a typical brain, different sections seamlessly work together to produce a harmonious melody. In children with ADHD, the communication between these sections can be disrupted, leading to difficulties with focus, organisation, and self-control.
ADHD manifests in three main ways:
Predominantly Inattentive Presentation: Children with this type have difficulty focusing, staying organised, and completing tasks. They may seem easily distracted and forgetful, often daydreaming or losing track of
conversations. Schoolwork can be a particular struggle, as focusing on lectures or completing assignments can be overwhelming.
Predominantly Hyperactive-Impulsive Presentation: These children exhibit excessive energy levels, fidgeting, restlessness, and difficulty waiting their turn. They might seem like they’re constantly “on,” rushing from one activity to another without completing any. Impulsivity can manifest in blurting out answers before questions are finished, making reckless decisions, or having difficulty controlling their emotions.
Combined Presentation: This is the most common type, and children display symptoms from both inattentiveness and hyperactivity-impulsivity. They may struggle to focus on tasks while also exhibiting excessive energy and impulsive behaviour.
Living with a child who has ADHD can be frustrating for both parties. Imagine the constant struggle to focus on homework battles, the exasperation of unfinished chores, or the social difficulties that arise from impulsive behaviour. However, with the right approach, you can empower your child to manage their symptoms and thrive.
Here are some points to consider, if you are raising a child with ADHD:
Embrace Structure and Routines: Children with ADHD benefit from predictable routines. Create clear schedules for waking up, bedtime, meals, and homework time. Visual aids like charts and calendars can be helpful reminders. Break down overwhelming projects into smaller, more manageable steps with clear rewards for completion. This predictability helps children with ADHD feel secure and in control.
Minimise Distractions: Create a quiet, clutter-free workspace to help your child focus. Limit screen time before homework sessions and turn off notifications on electronic devices. A calm environment reduces the barrage of stimuli that can overwhelm children with ADHD.
Positive Reinforcement: Focus on praising desired behaviours rather than dwelling on mistakes. Celebrate even small successes to boost your child’s self-esteem. This positive reinforcement system encourages your child to continue building positive habits.
Communication is Key: Talk to your child about ADHD in an age-appropriate way. Explain that it’s not a fault, but a difference in how their brain works. Encourage them to express their feelings and frustrations openly. Open communication fosters trust and understanding between you and your child.
Movement Matters: Physical activity is a crucial outlet for a child’s energy. Encourage regular exercise like sports, running, or even short activity breaks between tasks. Movement helps children with ADHD burn off excess energy and improve focus.
Seek Professional Help: A paediatrician or child psychiatrist can diagnose your child’s ADHD and recommend treatment options. This may include medication, behavioural therapy, or a combination of both. Medication can help regulate brain chemicals that contribute to ADHD symptoms, while therapy can teach coping mechanisms and organisational skills. Professional help creates a comprehensive approach to manage ADHD.
Take care of yourself: Parenting a child with ADHD can be demanding. Don’t neglect your own needs. Prioritise self-care, whether it’s reading a book, spending time with friends, or taking a relaxing bath. Consider support groups or online forums to connect with other parents facing similar challenges. Taking care of yourself ensures you have the
energy and emotional resilience to support your child.
Raising a child with ADHD requires patience, understanding, and consistent effort. There will be challenges and setbacks, but remember you’re not alone. By implementing these strategies, seeking support, and celebrating your child’s unique strengths,
you can create a nurturing environment where they can thrive. The journey ahead might be a whirlwind, but with the right tools and unwavering love, you can help your child navigate the storms and reach their full potential. Remember, your child is not defined by their ADHD, but by the boundless potential that lies within them.
Fireside Chat
British Chamber of Commerce Bahrain held a Fireside Chat with COO of Bahrain Fintech Bay, Suzy Al Zeerah, along with other professionals in the field.
Meal prepping has become a popular strategy for maintaining a balanced diet amidst busy schedules. We share our favourite version of a healthy quinoa bowl for your next meal prep.
WHAT’S FOR BREAKFAST
Quinoa Bowls
Among the various ingredients ideal for meal preps, quinoa stands out for its versatility, nutritional benefits and ease of preparation. This superfood breakfast bowl is a nutritious and versatile option for starting your day. This recipe combines protein-rich quinoa with fresh fruits, creamy Greek yoghurt, and crunchy nuts, providing a balanced mix of nutrients that will keep you energised throughout the morning.
INGREDIENTS
• 1 cup quinoa
PREPARATION
• 2 cups water or milk (can be substituted with almond milk, soy milk, or other nut milks)
• 1 cup Greek yogurt
• 1 cup mixed fresh berries
• 2 tbps honey or maple syrup (to taste)
• ¼ cup nuts (roughly chopped)
• 1 tsp vanilla extract(optional)
• Pinch of cinnamon (optional)
1. Place 1 cup of quinoa in a fine-mesh strainer and rinse under cold water for about 30 seconds. This helps remove the natural coating called saponin, which can give quinoa a bitter taste.
2. In a medium saucepan, combine the rinsed quinoa and 2 cups of water or milk. Bring the mixture to a boil over mediumhigh heat. Next, reduce the heat to low, cover the saucepan, and simmer for 15 minutes, or until the liquid is absorbed and the quinoa tender.
3. Remove the saucepan from the heat and let it sit, covered, for an additional 5 minutes. Fluff the quinoa with a fork.
4. In a bowl, place a portion of the cooked quinoa. You can serve it warm or let it cool down to room temperature, depending on your preference.
5. Mix the quinoa with Greek yogurt, vanilla and cinnamon, and top with a handful of mixed fresh berries for a burst of protein, antioxidants and vitamins.
6. Drizzle the honey or maple syrup over the bowl. This can be adjusted based on your preference.
7. Sprinkle the chopped nuts over the top. Your quinoa breakfast bowl is ready to serve. You can prepare multiple servings and store them in airtight containers in the refrigerator for up to three days, making it a convenient option for busy mornings. This recipe can be adjusted with a variety of fruit, including delicious bananas, apples, peaches or mangoes. Coconut shavings, chia seeds, cocoa nibs, flaxseeds and more can be alternated as toppings for a change in flavour. You can also swap the Greek yogurt for regular yogurt, dairy-free yogurt or cottage cheese. We hope you enjoy this recipe throughout this hot summer!

It’s been a huge year for my family; we’ve celebrated my eldest daughter’s 18th birthday, her new driving licence, and high school graduation from St Chris. I’ll be heading to Toronto to drop her off to university this summer. It’s been an emotional year!
If you could have one superpower, what would it be? I would love to be able to time travel. I’d be constantly re-living all the great times and fast-forwarding through the rough ones!
When going on vacation, do you opt for one that is relaxing or adventurous?
I have three kids - my life is an adventure! I’d definitely choose a relaxing vacation on a beach somewhere!

Would you rather be stranded in a desert or in Antarctica?
Neither! But if I had to choose - definitely the desert! I HATE the cold. That’s why I couldn’t stay in Canada.
Three things you never leave home without are: My phone, my credit card and my kids!
Your go-to comfort food is: My mum’s cooking.
