THE LAND OF THE RISING SUN
Japan has been a cornerstone of world culture, long been admired for its ability to blend ancient traditions with cutting-edge innovation. From its first settlement more than 30,000 years ago to its early imperial eras and its emergence as a global economic powerhouse in the 20th century, the nation’s influence on the world has been profound.
Ask anyone what the first thing they associate with Japan is, and you’d get a different answer every time. Whether it’s the timeless art of sushi, the elegance of the kimono, the beauty of cherry blossom, the mythology of the samurai and martial arts, to the global dominance of anime, video games, automotive exports and bullet trains, the beautiful island nation has left an indelible mark on the world.
Diplomatically, Japan has maintained strong international relationships, championing peaceful cooperation and cultural exchange. Bahrain and Japan established formal ties in 1972, building a relationship rooted in mutual respect and shared interests. Over the decades, this partnership has flourished, encompassing trade, technology, education and cultural dialogue.
This special JapaninBahrain feature explores the essence of Japan, shedding light on its cultural nuances, whilst also celebrating the richness of a thriving relationship with the Kingdom through the lens of people who shape its identity and build connections between the two nations.
Fostering Stronger Ties
As part of BahrainThisMonth’sJapaninBahrainfeature, Japanese Ambassador HE Okai Asako discusses the enduring relationship between Japan and Bahrain, highlighting diplomatic, cultural and economic collaborations that pave the way for a brighter, interconnected future.
How would you describe the current state of diplomatic relations between Japan and Bahrain?
Japan and Bahrain share a bond that dates back to 1934, evolving into a comprehensive partnership celebrated on the 50th anniversary of formal diplomacy in 2022. High-level visits, including King Hamad’s trip to Japan in 2012 and Crown Prince Salman’s attendance at Emperor Naruhito’s enthronement in 2019, underscore the mutual respect between our royal and imperial families. These exchanges reflect the strength of our relationship, which continues to explore new avenues of cooperation. I am optimistic about the future of this partnership, which is built on a strong foundation of trust and shared values.
How can Japan and Bahrain collaborate in technology, energy and trade?
Japan is a vital partner in Bahrain’s economy, financing over 20 percent of its electricity and water production through companies like Sumitomo, Kyushu Electric Power and Mitsui & Co. Our contributions extend to the industrial sector, with SULB’s joint venture with Yamato Kogyo leading structural steel production in the Middle East. Japanese firms such as Fuji Electric, Sumitomo and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries enhance Alba’s production, while JGC and Yokogawa provide cutting-edge engineering solutions for the oil and gas sector. Japanese vehicles dominate over 50 percentof Bahrain’s automotive market, supported by Toyota’s regional service hub.
Looking ahead, there is immense potential for collaboration in renewable energy, digital transformation and smart cities. Bahrain’s participation in the Osaka Expo 2025, themed ‘Designing Future Society for Our Lives,’ presents a unique opportunity to showcase Bahraini products and explore innovations that align with Vision 2030.
How can Japan assist Bahrain in addressing environmental challenges?
Japan has been a steadfast partner in Bahrain’s sustainability efforts since 2006, beginning with the Carbon Dioxide Recovery (CDR) plant at GPIC. Our commitment has deepened with recent projects like carbon capture and storage (CCS) initiatives with Bapco Energies and Alba. In 2023, Mitsui O.S.K. Lines signed an MoU with Bapco Energies to develop carbon transport and sequestration solutions, while Alba partnered with Daiki Aluminium Industry Company to establish a sustainable aluminium dross processing unit. Japan is also advancing water conservation technologies and promoting the use of hydrogen and ammonia as clean energy sources. These collaborations align with Bahrain’s upcoming National Energy Strategy, and I am confident that our joint efforts will help address pressing environmental challenges.
How does Japan contribute to Bahrain’s Vision 2030?
In addition to supporting sustainable development and economic diversification, Japan’s cultural exports, including anime, manga and video games, have become significant drivers of growth. Popular franchises like Pokémon and Studio Ghibli films resonate deeply with Bahrain’s younger population, creating new market opportunities.
The intellectual property sector, combined with advancements in AI and IT, offers Bahrain avenues to diversify its economy while fostering youth employment. Japanese startups such as Onigiri+, HARTi and SHIFT are already leveraging Bahrain’s robust regulatory framework and bilingual workforce to establish their presence.
Our collaborations with the Bahrain Economic Development Board (EDB) and Tamkeen ensure innovation remains a cornerstone of Bahrain’s Vision 2030.
What is Japan’s role in promoting stability and security in the Gulf region?
Japan values peace and security in the Gulf, recognising its global significance. The war in Gaza and the ongoing crises in Lebanon, Syria and Yemen are deeply concerning. Japan supports a two-state solution and has provided $2.6 billion in aid to Palestinians since 1993.
We also contribute to maritime safety, marking 15 years of counter-piracy operations off Somalia’s coast and in the Gulf of Aden. To date, 74 Japanese vessels and 55 maritime patrol aircraft have been deployed, ensuring safe passage for nearly 4,000 merchant ships.
Our defence cooperation with Bahrain has expanded through high-ranking visits and joint exercises under the 2023 MoU, reinforcing our shared commitment to regional stability.
What cultural initiatives strengthen ties between Japan and Bahrain?
The Japanese Embassy actively promotes cultural exchange through diverse initiatives. In 2024, events like the ‘I Love Sushi’ exhibition,
Anime and Tokusatsu film festivals, and Japanese festivals such as Hinamatsuri and Tanabata brought our cultures closer. The Japanese Society Festival, featuring Bon Odori and martial arts demonstrations, further enriched our bilateral ties.
Plans for 2025 include Ikebana workshops, a craft artisan exhibition and an expanded anime film festival in collaboration with Comic Con. Academic exchanges, including the establishment of Bahrain centre for Arabian Gulf Archaeology and Cultural Heritage, enhance mutual understanding.
Japanese cuisine’s growing popularity in Bahrain, reflected in Budoor Steele’s appointment as a Japanese Cuisine Goodwill Ambassador, is another testament to our cultural connection.
How can tourism between Japan and Bahrain grow?
Expo 2025 in Osaka is a pivotal opportunity to boost tourism. While Japan is increasingly popular among Bahrainis, Bahraini attractions remain under-promoted in Japan. Since 2019, the number of Bahraini visas to Japan has increased 2.4 times, reflecting a growing interest.
Japan prioritises attracting GCC tourists, with the Japan National Tourism Organisation opening a Dubai office to strengthen regional ties. Addressing gaps in cooperation between destination management companies will create seamless travel experiences.
Bahrain can also benefit from offering multicountry packages, attracting Japanese tourists to explore the region.
How can youth strengthen Japan-Bahrain relations?
Youth are essential to fostering stronger ties. The Japanese Government (MEXT) Scholarship and programmes like the Ship for World Youth build lasting connections. Internships with companies such as Yokogawa and E-Growth provide practical insights.
The Osaka Expo 2025 will also feature Bahraini youth volunteering at the Bahrain Pavilion, offering them unique opportunities to engage with global audiences.
What business opportunities exist between Japan and Bahrain?
Key forums like the Bahrain-Japan Business & Friendship Society and Japan-Bahrain Economic Cooperation Association promote economic ties. The 2022 Agreement on the Promotion and Protection of Investments is a significant milestone.
Collaborations with the Bahrain Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BCCI) and EDB continue to explore new investments, strengthening economic partnerships.
What has been your most memorable experience in Bahrain?
Bahrain’s warmth, cultural openness and emphasis on tolerance have left a lasting impression. Its rich history as a trading hub since the Dilmun era and its pearl industry heritage highlight the nation’s global significance.
Bahrain’s dedication to empowering women and youth, along with its commitment to peaceful coexistence, serves as a model for stability and progress.
How has Bahraini culture shaped you?
Adjusting to Bahrain has been seamless due to the warm welcome. Bahrain’s culinary diversity, especially its focus on seafood, feels familiar and enriching.
Learning about Bahrain’s historical crossroads of civilisations has deepened my understanding of its unique identity, blending tradition and modernity.

There is a Bahrain Japan Friendship Garden at Al Areen Park, with an area of 6833m² and home to 35 different species of plants!
Planting Seeds of Friendship
Designed to symbolise mutual respect and cultural exchange, the garden exemplifies a careful blend of traditional Japanese landscaping principles with elements reflecting Bahraini heritage. Nestled within Al Areen Wildlife Park, it also mixes cultural symbolism with environmental awareness.
Spanning 4,000 square metres, the first-of-itskind garden was inaugurated on February 18, 2015 by Her Royal Highness Princess Sabeeka bint Ibrahim Al Khalifa, wife of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa and Chairperson of the Advisory Council for the National Initiative for Agricultural Sector Development.
A key highlight of the garden is its impressive collection of over 35 plant and flower species, creating a vibrant yet peaceful atmosphere. The landscape is meticulously arranged to embody the harmony and simplicity characteristic of Japanese

garden design. Visitors can explore distinct sections, each with features that contribute to its serene ambience. These include the Bamboo Fence (Yotsumigaki), the Japanese Entrance Gate (Niomon), the Yukimi Stone Lantern, a uniquely designed Japanese Garden Pathway, a Waiting Room, a Handwashing Basin, a Wooden Pavilion, Turtle Island, Crane Bird Island, an Arch Bridge, a Multi-Storey Stone Tower, a Japanese Gate and even a Japanese Beach. Additionally, maps of both Bahrain and Japan are included, serving as a symbolic reminder of the connection between the two nations.
The garden has become a popular destination for those seeking a quiet escape or an opportunity to immerse themselves in a different cultural aesthetic. Its carefully designed layout encourages reflection and appreciation of the delicate balance between nature and artistic expression. The
presence of traditional Japanese elements such as stone lanterns and wooden pavilions creates an authentic experience that highlights Japan’s deeprooted respect for nature.
A project spearheaded by GPIC, the garden aligns with the company’s commitment to environmental sustainability. GPIC, a joint venture between Bahrain’s Bapco Energies, Saudi Arabia’s SABIC Agri-nutrient Investments and Kuwait’s Petrochemical Industries Co., has long championed eco-friendly initiatives. With a history of sustainable projects – including a fish farm, bird sanctuary and herbal garden – GPIC continues to integrate environmental responsibility with corporate innovation. Its role in establishing the Bahrain-Japan Friendship Garden underscores its dedication to fostering green spaces and promoting international cooperation.
This month, we explore how the Apparel Group is bringing iconic Japanese experiences to Bahrain, as it expands its ventures through Sushi Library and Asics in the Kingdom.
The Sushi Library, a contemporary Japanese restaurant concept, has quickly become a standout in Bahrain’s culinary scene. Following the success of its first branch in Marassi Galleria, the group has opened a second outlet in Juffair Square, with a third branch at The Avenues in the pipeline. Offering a creative fusion of Japanese flavours and modern dining, Sushi Library’s expansion highlights Bahrain’s growing appetite for diverse and innovative cuisines.
At the grand opening of the Marassi Galleria branch, guests were treated to tastings of signature dishes and lively cultural performances. “The opening of Sushi Library at Marassi Galleria reinforces our commitment to providing exceptional dining experiences for the Bahrain community,” said Neeraj Teckchandani, CEO of Apparel Group. With its focus on quality and customer engagement, the restaurant
aims to make Japanese dining accessible and enjoyable for a broad audience.
On the retail front, the renowned Japanese sportswear brand Asics is also making waves. Building on the success of its flagship store at Marassi Galleria, Asics is set to launch their two new outlets, with further expansions planned for this year. Known for its highperformance athletic gear and stylish designs, the brand is resonating with Bahrain’s active lifestyle enthusiasts.
The recent openings were attended by Her Excellency Okai Asako, the Japanese Ambassador to Bahrain, and Yusuf Yaqoob Lori, Director of Information & Follow-up at the Capital Governorate. Both dignitaries praised the ventures for fostering cultural and economic ties between the two nations. “Such initiatives reflect the
enduring friendship and shared values between Japan and Bahrain,” added HE Ms. Asako.
Apparel Group’s ambitious expansion underscores its dedication to enhancing Bahrain’s retail and dining options while contributing to the Kingdom’s economic growth. By combining world-class dining with premium retail experiences, the group continues to build cultural and commercial bridges between Bahrain and Japan.
As Sushi Library and Asics deepen their presence, they not only cater to local tastes and lifestyles but also celebrate the richness of Japanese culture. Their success reflects the growing potential for innovative concepts and international collaborations in Bahrain, paving the way for others in future.
Connecting Cultures, Building Futures
Since 2008, the Bahrain-Japan Business and Friendship Society (BJBFS) has bolstered ties between Bahrain and Japan. Its President, Nasser Al Arayedh, shares the organisation’s vision, successes and plans.
The Bahrain-Japan Business and Friendship Society (BJBFS) has been at the forefront of fostering economic and cultural ties between Bahrain and Japan since its inception in 2008. As President, Mr. Al Arayedh leads initiatives that enhance bilateral relations through organising events, facilitating business delegations and collaborating with Japanese counterparts. “I’ve been involved since day one,” he says. “Starting as Deputy President, I was later elected President and continue to work towards our shared goals.”
Initially established as the Bahrain-Japan Friendship Society, the organisation expanded its focus to include business in 2011. “Our goal is to strengthen bilateral relations by fostering friendship, understanding and cooperation across economic, cultural and social domains,” Mr. Al Arayedh explains. Over the years, BJBFS has grown into a platform for collaboration, with its vision firmly set on becoming a leading entity in these efforts.
The relationship between Bahrain and Japan dates back to the establishment of diplomatic ties in 1972. Mr. Al Arayedh highlights the strong foundations of
this partnership. “Bahrain-Japan relations are robust, characterised by significant governmental collaboration and vibrant grassroots interactions. Trade between our nations exceeded 197 billion Japanese Yen in 2023, with Japanese investments contributing to Bahrain’s energy sector.” Beyond commerce, cultural and educational exchanges have played a pivotal role in fostering mutual understanding.
BJBFS has been instrumental in bridging cultural and economic gaps. Recent initiatives include a virtual seminar, in partnership with JETRO, exploring the outlook of Japanese businesses in the Middle East. The society has also introduced Japanese expatriates to Bahrain’s rich heritage through historical tours of Manama and Muharraq, while visits to key facilities, such as the new Bahrain International Airport and Yokogawa’s industrial site in Hidd, have strengthened business relationships. “These initiatives reflect our commitment to fostering mutual understanding and collaboration,” he adds.
Opportunities for further collaboration between Bahrain and Japan are abundant. “Energy, particularly renewable resources, holds immense promise. Japan’s expertise in solar, wind and hydrogen technologies

aligns with Bahrain’s clean energy goals,” he notes. He also points to sectors like technology, innovation, healthcare and education as fertile grounds for cooperation.
Cultural exchange remains a cornerstone of BJBFS’s mission. Through events like traditional Japanese workshops, educational exchanges and businesscultural integration activities, the society creates a platform for meaningful connections. “These efforts are vital for building long-term friendships,” Mr. Al Arayedh says.
Bahrain’s youth are encouraged to seize opportunities presented by BJBFS. Exchange programmes, internships and participation in cultural events offer avenues to engage with Japanese culture and technology. “Our younger generation can gain valuable skills, build global perspectives and strengthen Bahrain-Japan relations,” he emphasises.
In closing, Mr. Al Arayedh congratulates Japan on its National Foundation Day on February 11 and extends his gratitude to Bahrain’s leadership. “Their vision continues to strengthen Bahrain’s ties with Japan and beyond,” he concludes.

The creation of specialised entities under HMD Consolidate, such as Contratech, Leap, Marinetech and Contratech International Trading (CIT), was driven by the need to offer tailored solutions. “Each entity was established to meet specific market demands, from MEP solutions at Contratech to marine services at
Marinetech,”’ explains Mr. Zaidan. “This approach has allowed us to expand our influence and deliver world-class services.”
Success for HMD Consolidate is measured through a blend of financial performance, client satisfaction and operational efficiency. “At the group level, we track growth by the scale of projects and our reputation in the industry,” Mr. Zaidan elaborates. “At the subsidiary level, we set clear, specific goals such as meeting project deadlines and managing costs.”
Looking ahead, the construction industry in Bahrain is primed for growth. “Infrastructure development and residential projects are booming, and we aim to be a key partner in these initiatives,” he says. A major success story within the group is Contratech International Trading (CIT), which has become the leading distributor of Hitachi Air Conditioners in Bahrain. Hitachi, a renowned Japanese brand with a legacy of excellence, was established in 1910 by Namihei Odaira in Hitachi City, Japan. What began as a modest machine repair shop has since grown into a global leader in air conditioning and cooling technology.

Elevating Guest Experiences
Darren Darwin, Cluster General Manager at Swiss-Belhotel Seef Bahrain and Swiss-Belsuites Admiral Juffair, shares insights into his leadership, innovations and the future of hospitality.
Mr. Darwin’s journey began in an unexpected setting – the military. “I joined at 16, which instilled discipline, communication and empathy,” he says. Transitioning into hospitality, his career started in his mother’s pub before an apprenticeship opened doors to Intercontinental Hotels in the UK. Over time, he gained global experience with hotel openings in regions like the Caribbean, Eastern Europe and Oman. Returning to the Middle East with Swiss-Bel International, he now oversees two dynamic properties in Bahrain.
Mr. Darwin’s leadership philosophy is rooted in aligning personal and professional values. “I lead by empowerment,” he explains. “Allowing my team to grow, take risks and learn from mistakes is key. I focus on the ‘moving average’ for success, rather than dwelling on bad days. I believe in excellence over perfection, and prioritise clear communication, understanding the team and rewarding recognition through praise or other means, to encourage growth and development.”
Transparency and regular communication form the backbone of his management style, ensuring consistency across Swiss-Belsuites Admiral, which caters to families, and Swiss-Belhotel Seef, a hub for corporate events. “Mastering the basics is essential before pursuing innovation,” he adds.
A focus on technology and sustainability underpins Mr. Darwin’s vision for the future. He highlights AI-driven tools, communication platforms like real-time guest messaging via CRM and BookingWiz to enhance interaction, and sustainable initiatives like composting and plastic-free practices. “Sustainability is more than a buzzword; it’s our responsibility,” he notes, mentioning ongoing explorations into hydroponic farming and energy conservation.
Mr. Darwin’s team adapts services to meet diverse guest expectations. For leisure travellers, local experiences and cuisine are prioritised, while corporate guests value efficiency and speed. “Execution of the basics, paired with continuous training, ensures consistency,” he explains. Innovative touches, such as locally inspired welcome drinks and cultural literature, enhance the Bahraini experience for guests.
Looking ahead, Mr. Darwin is optimistic about the cluster’s growth. “Swiss-Belhotel Seef is enhancing its corporate offerings including a new executive lounge,” he shares. Meanwhile, Swiss-Belsuites Admiral plans to introduce F&B concepts and entertainment tailored to its unique location near the Naval Support Activity Bahrain. “We’re also expanding outdoor catering and exploring technological advancements,” he says, underscoring Swiss-Bel International’s commitment to innovation.
Mr. Darwin’s focus remains on nurturing talent within his team. “I support career growth within Swiss-Bel Hotels and am confident our strong team will drive future success in Bahrain,” he states. Reflecting on the cluster’s achievements, he proudly highlights their leading market share and top ranking in the brand’s quality matrix.
As Swiss-Belhotel continues to grow in Bahrain, it’s clear that Mr. Darwin’s work isn’t done yet. “We’re also looking to integrate technological advancements and expand our portfolio, with new projects potentially coming to Bahrain in the near future,” he concludes.

FINTECH At The Forefront Of
The finance sector is undergoing a remarkable transformation, driven by the rapid evolution of financial technology, or Fintech. Essentially, this is a merging of finance with cutting-edge technology to create innovative solutions that make transactions faster, more secure and widely accessible. From mobile payment platforms and peer-to-peer lending to blockchain technology and cryptocurrencies, Fintech is reshaping the way individuals and businesses interact with money.
Cryptocurrency, one of the most talkedabout Fintech advancements, refers to digital currencies that operate on decentralised systems. Unlike traditional currencies, cryptocurrencies are secured through cryptography and rely on blockchain technology – a digital ledger that records transactions across multiple systems in an immutable and transparent manner. These innovations are designed to reduce dependency on
intermediaries, cut costs and enhance security, making them particularly appealing in an increasingly digitalised world.
As nations strive to adapt to these developments, Bahrain has emerged as a leading Fintech hub in the Middle East. Renowned for its forwardthinking policies and infrastructure, the Kingdom has established itself as a nurturing ground for Fintech startups and enterprises. The Bahrain Fintech Bay, launched in 2018, is at the forefront of this commitment, serving as a state-of-theart ecosystem for innovation and collaboration in the industry.
Furthermore, Bahrain’s regulatory framework stands out as one of the most progressive in the region. The Central Bank of Bahrain (CBB) has introduced a Regulatory Sandbox, allowing Fintech companies to test their solutions in a controlled environment. This initiative has paved the way for pioneering developments, from
open banking frameworks to advances in digital payments, cementing Bahrain’s reputation as a Fintech leader.
As the global shift towards Fintech accelerates, Bahrain continues to achieve key milestones. The Kingdom’s commitment to fostering financial innovation is evident in its partnerships with global Fintech players and its emphasis on integrating digital solutions into its banking and financial services sectors. This approach not only enhances its competitiveness but also aligns with its broader economic diversification goals under Vision 2030.
In this exclusive feature, we will delve deeper into the world of Fintech through interviews with industry leaders and experts. Their insights will illuminate the challenges and opportunities facing this burgeoning sector, offering a glimpse into how Bahrain is poised to shape the future of financial technology.

BenefitPay continues to refine its product to meet the demands of a diverse business ecosystem, from small enterprises to larger organisations. Its ability to cater to these varied needs is part of its success.
Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are at the heart of BenefitPay Merchant’s strategy. The platform is designed to be easy to integrate, enabling SMEs to accept payments quickly with minimal effort. Continuous support and maintenance ensure the service remains secure and reliable for users.

Security is another cornerstone of BenefitPay’s approach. With a focus on protecting both merchants and customers, BenefitPay employs stringent security measures to safeguard transactions and sensitive data.
BenefitPay Merchant has empowered businesses and individuals alike and we’re proud to be part of the Kingdom’s digital economy.”
- Hasan Khalid Abdulla
BenefitPay Merchant is constantly evolving. The company’s strategy includes rolling out new features that will further enhance the user experience. “Our goal is to make the merchant experience as simple and efficient as possible,” says Mr. Abdulla. Data analytics plays a crucial role in this evolution. By prioritising data integrity, BenefitPay ensures that its solutions are based on accurate insights into user behaviour.
Looking ahead, the future of digital payments in Bahrain appears bright. The widespread use of BenefitPay has made Bahrain one of the leading cashless societies in the region. The BenefitPay Merchant application has played a key role in this shift, aligning with Bahrain’s economic vision for 2030 and beyond.

Steering Bahrain’s FINTECH REVOLUTION
As Chief Executive Officer of Cryptos Consultancy, Ali Jamal discusses Bahrain’s progressive Fintech landscape as part of our exclusive feature, shedding light on innovation, blockchain trends and regulatory advancements.
What is the current regulatory environment for Fintech in Bahrain?
Bahrain has emerged as a frontrunner in Fintech innovation within the MENA region, largely due to its progressive regulatory framework. The Central Bank of Bahrain (CBB) has struck a remarkable balance between encouraging innovation and maintaining strong compliance and security measures. A standout initiative, the Regulatory Sandbox, provides businesses with a controlled environment to test innovative technologies such as blockchain and cryptocurrencies, allowing them to operate while adhering to regulatory standards.
An example of Bahrain’s forward-thinking approach is the licensing of crypto.com, which facilitated the launch of the region’s first crypto card in collaboration with MasterCard. This move significantly enhanced Bahrain’s standing as a leading Fintech hub. At Cryptos Consultancy, we leverage Bahrain’s favourable regulatory landscape to guide clients in navigating compliance requirements, enabling them to innovate with confidence and align with the highest regulatory standards.

How do you see the adoption of cryptocurrencies evolving among Bahraini businesses and individuals, and what challenges need to be overcome to increase its mainstream use?
Cryptocurrency adoption in Bahrain is on the rise, with increasing numbers of businesses integrating crypto payment solutions and individuals investing in crypto assets. The CBB’s proactive approach, including the Regulatory Sandbox, has been instrumental in supporting this growth. However, challenges like market volatility, a lack of widespread public education on the benefits and risks of crypto and the development of necessary infrastructure remain.
At Cryptos Consultancy, we assist businesses in navigating the complexities of the crypto landscape by offering tailored compliance strategies and risk management solutions. As the market matures, we expect greater institutional adoption, further supported by robust regulatory frameworks and infrastructure developments.
What types of cryptocurrency products or services are currently in demand in Bahrain, and how does Cryptos Consultancy position itself to meet these needs?

How is blockchain technology being utilised in Bahrain outside of cryptocurrency, such as in supply chain management, real estate or government services?
Blockchain technology is being applied across various sectors in Bahrain, extending well beyond cryptocurrencies. In supply chain management, blockchain improves transparency and traceability, reinforcing Bahrain’s strategic role as a logistics hub. In real estate, it is used to streamline property transactions, enhancing both security and efficiency. Moreover, Bahrain’s Vision 2030 includes blockchain integration into public services such as digital record-keeping and

What distinguishes Bahrain’s Fintech ecosystem from other GCC countries?
Bahrain stands out in the GCC and MENA regions for its forwardthinking regulatory environment, cost-effectiveness and initiatives like the Regulatory Sandbox and Fintech Bay. These programmes offer flexibility to both startups and established companies seeking to scale. Notably, Bahrain is the only MENA country where the Central Bank regulates and issues licenses for crypto-asset providers, granting them access to full banking services. This unique framework positions Bahrain as a dynamic gateway for both crypto and traditional financial services.
What role do Bahrain’s Fintech accelerators and incubators play in supporting startups, and how can Cryptos Consultancy assist startups in navigating these resources?
Bahrain’s Fintech accelerators and incubators, such as Fintech Bay, play a crucial role in supporting startups by providing mentorship, funding and access to a broad network. These resources are vital for helping startups refine their business models and scale effectively. Cryptos Consultancy supports these startups by offering expert guidance on regulatory processes, ensuring they meet compliance requirements while fully leveraging available resources to thrive in Bahrain’s Fintech ecosystem.
What are your thoughts on the integration of AI and machine learning in Fintech solutions in Bahrain?
AI and machine learning are poised to revolutionise the sector by enhancing predictive analytics, fraud detection and delivering personalised customer experiences. These technologies also support regulatory compliance through automated reporting and advanced risk management tools. At Cryptos Consultancy, we advocate for the integration of AI in Fintech operations, ensuring businesses implement these technologies in line with regulatory standards while driving innovation, security and efficiency.
Looking ahead, what key developments or innovations do you foresee shaping Bahrain’s Fintech sector in the next few years?

HISTORY & HOSPITALITY
Ethiopia is a land of profound history, vibrant culture and breath-taking landscapes. Kristian Harrison recently had the chance to visit the country, facilitated by Ethiopian Airlines, and explored the capital Addis Ababa’s treasures.
After a very comfortable direct flight from Bahrain to Addis Ababa and a smooth Visa process thanks to the kindness of the Ethiopian Consulate General in Bahrain, I was taken directly to the nearby Ethiopian Skylight Hotel, the largest in Africa and owned by Ethiopian Airlines, and checked into my spacious room. After a brief nap and meeting my friendly tour guide, Abush, it was time to explore!
The journey began at the National Museum, home to many treasures of Ethiopia’s past. The highlight was undoubtedly the fossilised remains of early hominids, the most famous of which is ‘Lucy,’ the partial skeleton of a specimen estimated to date to 3.2 million years ago. Another excellent exhibition was the section dedicated to Emperor Haile Selassie, one of Ethiopia’s most renowned rulers. It was an extraordinary experience to walk through the corridors of history and witness artefacts that have shaped Ethiopia’s identity.
That afternoon, I visited Unity Park, a beautiful complex in the centre of the city. Its unique charm lies not only in its expanses of greenery and historical artefacts, but also in its stunning wildlife exhibits, featuring rare animals like black lions, wildebeests, cheetahs and meerkats.
Day two began with a trip to Entoto, a mountainous escape offering panoramic views of Addis Ababa. As I stood at the viewpoint, the sprawling cityscape below with its towering skyscrapers, metro lines and bustling commuters showcased a modern, progressive city.
Whilst we were here, we stopped at the nearby Entoto St. Maryam Church which added a spiritual touch to the morning. Even more memorable was that I happened to gatecrash a wedding taking place there, so it was with delight that I got to see the assembled party chanting and applauding the happy couple!
Later, I visited the Ethnological Museum, an insightful repository of Ethiopia’s cultural diversity. Located within the former palace of Haile Selassie, the museum provided a look into the traditions and daily lives of the country’s many ethnic groups. The day ended with a delightful cultural shopping experience, where I picked up some colourful handcrafted souvenirs that encapsulated Ethiopia’s artistic heritage.
Dinner that evening was a particular delight. Traditional injera, a spongy sourdough flatbread, served as the base for an array of meat and vegetable curries. Bursting with flavour and a medley of textures, it was paradise in the palate, and even better when complemented by live performances of traditional music and dance.
On my final day, I explored the Coffee Museum at Hadero. Learning about coffee’s origins and its significance to Ethiopian culture was fascinating. From the meticulous hand-sorting of beans to the intricate roasting and brewing process, it showed the getting the perfect cup is truly an art form. The museum also highlighted the discovery of coffee in Ethiopia and its evolution into a global phenomenon. It was a reminder of how much this beloved drink connects people across the globe, yet remains rooted in its Ethiopian origins.
Whilst here, we also partook in a traditional coffee ceremony. Often accompanied by incense burning and snacks like popcorn, it remains a hospitality staple.
One of the major highlights of my tour was the exclusive tour of Ethiopian Airlines’ state-ofthe-art facilities. Living its motto of Bringing Africa Together and Beyond, Ethiopian has created Africa-wide and transcontinental air connectivity networks linking its main hub in Addis Ababa to the rest of the world. The airline serves 141 international passenger and cargo destinations, including 66 African cities, with daily and multiple flights with a minimum layover in Addis operating the youngest and the state-of-the-art fleet types such as A3501000, B787-900, B777, B737 Max and more.
As a veteran carrier serving a vast intra-African network, Ethiopian flies to more destinations in the continent than any other airline. Its four weekly flights from Bahrain offer a seamless connectivity to points in its vast networks in Africa, South/North America, Asian and Europe.
The experience was nothing short of remarkable. I visited its training facilities for pilots, engineers, cabin crew and air traffic controllers (featuring an awe-inspiring room with 180-degree screens and cutting-edge simulations to account for every possible emergency and situation). The cargo warehouse and maintenance depot showcased
the airline’s operational excellence as the largest airline in Africa, while the flight simulator training area allowed me to witness a simulated flight in action. The sheer scale of operations and the company’s commitment to being a hub of innovation and training, not just in Africa but the world, was truly impressive. Reflecting on my time in the wonderful country, a special mention must go to Abush and the team at Anbessa Travel, whose expertise and kindness elevated the entire trip.
As I reflect on my incredible journey, I am filled with gratitude for the opportunity to explore Addis Ababa, especially to Redi Yesuf, Country Manager for Ethiopian Airlines in Bahrain. The city definitely left a mark on me, and I am already excited to one day return to Ethiopia to venture beyond its capital and discover more of its natural beauty and cultural wonders.

Adriano and Karina:
L VE BEYOND BORDERS
Adriano and Karina’s enduring love story include chance encounters, overcoming life’s challenges and celebrating the power of connection on a globetrotting adventure.
Adriano and Karina’s story began in 2010 at a wedding anniversary of mutual friends. At the time, Adriano led the personnel department in Brasília, while Karina was starting her career. “I was very impressed when he spoke about principles and values,” she says. “To be honest, I fell in love with him at first sight.” She joined his team in the foreign service, and their professional relationship soon blossomed into a lasting friendship and, eventually, love.
For the couple, marriage is “not a finish line, but a starting point.” Adriano compares it to “a canvas to which we add colours and lights, a painting in constant development.” Their wedding was a small, intimate affair held in a romantic historical town in Brazil with just 15 guests. They continue to mark milestones with equally personal celebrations, such as dining at a new Italian restaurant in Bahrain.
Though life has brought challenges, they approach each obstacle with resilience.
“Frustrations will pass, but we remain strong,” Karina says. Disagreements are resolved through “the power of forgiveness and the ability to laugh at ourselves.” Their contrasting personalities also serve as strengths. “One’s weakness is the other’s strength,” Karina explains. Adriano encourages her to be more active, while she helps him stay organised and patient. “We have become each other’s mentors,” she adds.
Despite demanding careers, they prioritise time together. While hobbies like playing guitar and ballroom dancing have been paused, they still enjoy shared activities such as reading, exercising and entertaining themselves. Recently, their little cat, Nessie, has brought additional joy to their lives.
Their Catholic faith has deeply shaped their relationship. “Our union is not just a contract, but a sacred bond,” Karina says. This belief has strengthened their long-term goals, ensuring they remain aligned. “Every couple should reconcile their life goals, always looking in the same direction.”
One of their defining moments came during a year apart, with Karina in Colombia and Adriano in Italy. Reuniting at Christmas confirmed the resilience of their bond. “Nothing had changed between us,” Karina says. Adriano reflects on the COVID-19 pandemic as another turning point: “The isolation that separated so many couples brought us even closer.”
The happy couple continue to add chapters to their romantic story in the Kingdom as they pursue their diplomatic roles at the Brazilian Embassy in Bahrain.
Asako and Tomo:
A BOND STRENGTHENED BY L VE
From their first meeting on a golf course in Sri Lanka to navigating life’s challenges together, Asako and Tomo’s relationship highlights the importance of love, resilience and making time for what truly matters.
Asako and Tomo first met in Sri Lanka, where Tomo was running a business and Asako had just arrived as a diplomat. Tomo recalls the buzz in the Japanese community about the charming new diplomat, but it wasn’t until a golf competition that he got to know her. During the game, Asako struggled in a bunker, and her endearing expression, almost in tears, caught Tomo’s attention.
Asako found Tomo’s gentle nature soothing, especially as she often got too serious about her work. “Tomo has been a constant source of comfort,” Asako shares. “I appreciate him being close to me all the time.” He has followed her to various postings after their marriage, including to the Kingdom in her role as the Japanese Ambassador to Bahrain.
The couple share a love for golf and hot springs, which they believe strengthens their bond. They are members of the Royal Golf Club in Bahrain and enjoy playing golf together. Although Bahrain lacks hot springs, they make it a point to visit them in Japan whenever they return for their rejuvenating benefits. These activities not only provide physical
exercise but also offer relaxation, contributing to their overall well-being.
A particularly poignant moment in their relationship was when Tomo was diagnosed with progressive cancer. Asako was working at the United Nations in New York during the COVID-19 pandemic, which allowed her to work online from Tokyo and care for Tomo despite the 13-hour time difference. The timely detection and treatment of Tomo’s cancer were crucial, and he has since been in remission.
This experience underscored the importance of paying close attention to family health and acting swiftly when issues arise. Asako emphasises the significance of regular health check-ups and immediate action if any abnormalities are detected. “I am grateful for having met her, otherwise I am a dead man by now!” Tomo adds.

BETROTHED IN BAHRAIN
In another story of love found on our beautiful island, Alex Middleton shares how he got down on one knee to his beloved Nina Patel.
In our humble opinion, Bahrain is a community where relationships and love thrive. Having grown up in Bahrain for half my life, there was no other place that I envisaged ‘popping’ the special question to my girlfriend.
Considering that she was only visiting the special island for two days, planning had to be flawless. In terms of location, the Four seasons hotel offered the perfect setting, with a beach that provides incredible views of Bahrain’s majestic skyline. Naturally, ‘location’ was salient for the inevitable barrage of photos to be taken and posted.
After spending a luxurious rest and recovery day between the pools and spa, I shepherded her along the silky sand on the last sunset of 2024, and knelt down on one knee to expose my innermost vulnerability, last displayed at my most recent prostate examination. A wave of relief washed over me as she said ‘yes’, and the rest of the moment was encapsulated by a blissful blur. We had the privilege of being able to celebrate with close family and friends at a wonderful NYE event hosted by my uncle, toasting to the new year, and exciting new beginnings for us!

Chef’s Cut: Nguyen Minh Phuc
At Raffles Al Areen Palace Bahrain, Executive Chef Nguyen Minh Phuc blends tradition and innovation to craft exceptional dining experiences that highlight cultural authenticity, creativity and sustainability.
For Chef Nguyen, cooking is a deeply personal craft. “Cooking is an art for me, where each dish tells a story and evokes emotion,” he shares. His culinary journey has been guided by creativity and a desire to create memorable guest experiences. Returning to the Kingdom, a country he fell in love with years ago, offered him the perfect opportunity to reconnect with its peaceful beauty while contributing to the world-class offerings at Raffles Al Areen Palace Bahrain.
The resort’s culinary philosophy emphasises a harmonious blend of flavours, textures and colours inspired by Middle Eastern, Indian, Mediterranean and Asian traditions. By using locally sourced ingredients, Chef Nguyen and his team aim to create luxurious dining experiences that reflect regional culture while delivering exceptional quality. “Every dish is a testament to craftsmanship and our dedication to excellence,” he says.

coated in a salt crust and baked to perfection. “This method preserves the fish’s delicate flavours and moisture, creating an exceptional dining experience,” he explains. The dish embodies the resort’s commitment to quality and elegance, offering guests a refined taste of Bahrain.
Chef Nguyen is also passionate about sustainability, which he considers a core principle in his kitchen. “We focus on efficient food storage, using leftovers creatively, prioritising local and sustainably sourced ingredients and embracing energy-efficient cooking methods,” he says. These initiatives, combined with a conscious effort to reduce single-use plastics, ensure the culinary team minimises waste while enhancing the guest experience.
Collaboration with local farmers and distributors is integral to his sourcing practices, ensuring the freshest ingredients while supporting the regional economy. Chef Nguyen also embraces modern culinary trends, such as clean eating and wellnessfocused dishes, which align with the needs of Raffles Al Areen’s guests. “We offer healthy,
nutrient-rich dishes that are low in cholesterol, maintaining authenticity while meeting wellness goals,” he explains.
One of the chef’s most memorable moments at the resort was leading a catering event for the French Embassy in October 2024. “The guests were extremely impressed with the food, and a week later we received a booking for a VIP dinner at Palma restaurant,” he recalls. “This experience underscored the impact of my team’s hard work and dedication.”
For aspiring chefs, Chef Nguyen’s advice is simple but powerful: “Stay sharp, work hard and invest in yourself. Your success will depend on the effort, struggles and sacrifices you make today.”

Japan A Taste of
Maki Restaurant at Moda Mall offers a dining experience that goes beyond expectations, blending Japanese culinary traditions with imaginative twists. Kristian Harrison checked it out and was left amazed by its magical creations.
I already knew I was in for a treat as soon as I was greeted by the modern décor and friendly staff at Maki. Eager to tuck into the plethora of options on the menu, I started with the Chef Chopped Salad. The medley of tuna, salmon, avocado, tobiko and crispy tempura was as pleasing to the eye as it was to the palate. The peanut wasabi dressing brought a gentle heat, perfectly balancing the richness of the seafood with the peppery notes of rocket. It was the kind of dish that instantly awakened my appetite.
Next, the team placed the Fashion Blog Sashimi before me, a plate as beautiful as it was intriguing. The silky salmon was topped with a bold combination of mango salsa and balsamic glaze, its sweetness offset by the gentle spice of sriracha.
From there, I moved on to the Thea Nigiri Sushi, which had an air of elegance. Each piece was a delicate balance of buttery salmon, nutty brown rice and creamy avocado, tied together with unagi and a light drizzle of olive oil. The freshness of the cress garnish added a subtle crunch, creating a satisfying bite that felt comforting and refined.
Then came one of the true highlights, the Spicy Tuna Aburi Sushi. Watching the flame-torched tuna arrive was an experience in itself, and the dish lived up to the anticipation. The smoky, melt-in-the-mouth fish paired beautifully with the crispy filo and spicy sauce, creating a dynamic that lingered long after the last bite.
The Kaian Maki was a nice surprise when it made its way to the table. Each roll hit you with the earthy taste of shisho leaves, coupled with creamy avocado and pops of tobiko and the richness of black truffle pearls. The subtle zing of yuzu flakes gave the dish a bright, citrusy finish that kept it light despite its decadent elements.
The menu’s creativity shone again with the Shiitake Angus Burger Maki, a playful and satisfying fusion of tender Angus beef and fresh vegetables. Topped with pepper mushroom sauce and complemented by crispy sweet potato and beetroot, it was an unexpected delight that demonstrated Maki’s innovative approach to sushi.
To round off the occasion, the Black Angus Tenderloin Beef arrived, cooked to perfection and served with a fresh vegetable salad. The teriyaki glaze added a rich sweetness that complemented the meat’s natural depth of flavour. As more of a meat lover than a seafood aficionado, this was one of my favourites of the day!
Of course, no meal is complete without being washed down by a hearty beverage, and the Electric Lemonade was a refreshing companion, its zesty blend of lemon and blue curacao cutting through the richness of each dish.
Leaving thoroughly satisfied, Maki’s ability to reinvent Japanese cuisine with such flair and precision makes it a standout destination for those looking to be surprised and delighted with every bite. I can’t wait to return!

A Life of Cultural Connection
As the wife of the French Ambassador to Bahrain, Amélie Giraud-Telme has embraced her new life in the Kingdom. In this exclusive interview, she opens up to the importance of cultural exchange, resilience and empowering future generations
It’s not just about adjusting, but embracing what makes each place special. ”
Amélie Giraud-Telme
Raised in the picturesque region of Côtes du Rhône in southern France, Mrs. GiraudTelme remains deeply connected to her roots, particularly the family’s organic grape beverage heritage.
With a background in Human Resources, Mrs. Amélie spent over 15 years as an HR Manager before her life took a new direction upon meeting her husband. “I was not destined for a diplomatic life until I met him,” she admits. “However, since arriving in Bahrain in September 2023, I have embraced my role as a mother, finding joy in our children’s growth, especially as our daughter now speaks three languages.”
Having lived and worked in the UAE and Saudi Arabia, Mrs. Giraud-Telme’s exposure to different cultures has broadened her perspective. “Each country I’ve lived in has its own unique culture and dynamics,” she explains, emphasising the importance of cultural awareness and adaptability.
“It’s not just about adjusting, but embracing what makes each place special.
Adapting to life in Bahrain, Mrs. Giraud-Telme appreciates the warm and welcoming nature of the Bahraini people. “This island is a treasure, not just for its rich history but for the generosity of its people,” she says.
Passionate about causes close to her heart, Mrs. Giraud-Telme has actively engaged in the fight against breast cancer by organising a ‘Pink October’ conference at the French Embassy. She is also involved with the Bahrain Diabetes Society, focusing on Type 1 diabetes prevention and treatment as well as the Children and Mothers Welfare Society.
Though she left her career in HR behind, Mrs. Giraud-Telme has capitalised on her significant career to mentor students, helping them with career coaching, CV writing and interview
preparation. “I enjoy assisting them in developing their skills and navigating their paths,” she explains.
In her role as an ambassador’s wife, Mrs. GiraudTelme is involved in the relationship between France and Bahrain and is delighted to support many activities organised by the French embassy. “My main goal is to build on these ties in many sectors, particularly with young entrepreneurs,” she asserts. Her passion for collaboration and support for others extends to empowering young women to overcome obstacles and reach their full potential. “Perseverance and maintaining a positive mindset are key,” she adds.
On a final note, she expresses her appreciation for Bahrain’s hospitality. “Bahrain is an incredible place, and I am honoured to be here and dedicate myself to supporting our community and culture,” she concludes.
HETAL & DISHEN
Wedding Bliss
Weddings in Bahrain are a beautiful blend of heritage, culture and love. For Hetal Karani and Dishen Patel, it was about celebrating creating lasting memories with a stunning fusion of tradition and modern elegance.
Their wedding in the Kingdom allowed them to celebrate their routes – Hetal’s family has deep ties to Bahrain, dating back to the 1960s when her grandfather moved from Bombay to join the booming pearl industry. “Bahrain holds a special place in my family’s heart,” Hetal says. “It’s where my grandparents built lasting friendships and treasured memories, and the country has been part of our family’s journey ever since.”
Bahrain’s rich cultural heritage has always been a significant part of Hetal’s life and she and Dishen were determined to weave these elements into their wedding celebrations. The couple carefully chose Raffles Al Areen Palace Bahrain, a property that blends traditional Bahraini architecture with modern luxury. “We wanted our guests to experience Bahrain’s cultural identity from the moment they arrived,” Hetal shares. “From the arched doorways to the courtyards and the intricate details influenced by the Dilmun Civilisation, every corner of the venue reflects the essence of the region.”
“Bahrain is known for its warmth and hospitality,” Hetal explains. “We wanted our wedding to embody this spirit.” At their Sangeet, they featured local Bahraini talent, including a perfumer, sketch artist and Gahwa (traditional coffee), alongside delicacies like Luqaimat and Um Ali, giving their guests a true taste of Bahraini flavours.
Choosing Dandy Salvino as their wedding planner was crucial for Hetal and Dishen. “From the moment we met Dandy, we knew she was the one,” Hetal recalls. “She understood our vision and brought it to life in ways we hadn’t imagined.” A standout feature was the creation
of a unique Mandap, a Hindu pavilion for the ceremony, designed by Dandy. “It was an architectural challenge,” Hetal admits, “but Dandy approached it confidently and delivered a structure that had never been built before, perfectly complementing the resort’s architecture.”
Beyond the wedding day, Hetal and Dishen’s love story is also a celebration of their shared values and ambitions. Hailing from different backgrounds – Hetal from Dubai and Dishen from New Jersey, USA – the two met on a dating app and instantly clicked. “Our cultures may be different, but our values and ambitions align perfectly,” Hetal says. Their whirlwind romance culminated in a breathtaking proposal in Reykjavik, Iceland, where Dishen surprised Hetal with a helicopter ride to an active volcano site. “It’s a memory we’ll cherish forever,” Hetal says with a smile.
With their wedding now behind them, Hetal and Dishen are excited for the future, both personally and professionally, and are eager to continue making a difference through their shared philanthropic efforts. Their wedding in Bahrain, however, will always remain a beautiful and poignant reminder of the love, culture and heritage they’ve both embraced.
Blending Art, Culture and Family
Dandy Salvino, a renowned wedding decorator and designer in Bahrain, reflects on the memorable experience of planning Hetal’s wedding. Having previously worked with Hetal’s family, Dandy was honoured to help her craft a wedding that was both personal and profound.
“My role as Hetal’s wedding decorator and designer went beyond design. I was her guide and support system, ensuring her vision was realised in every detail,” says Dandy. From selecting venues to curating every artistic element, Dandy’s focus was on creating a wedding that reflected Hetal and her groom Dishen’s personalities. “Hetal became more than just a client; she became a friend, and I wanted to ensure her dream wedding came to life flawlessly.”
of the country, noting that the Bahrain Tourism & Exhibitions Authority has made destination weddings seamless and unforgettable. “Bahrain offers a unique canvas for wedding celebrations, with its mix of luxurious venues and warm, welcoming atmosphere.”
Dandy highlighted the country’s rich cultural heritage and modern appeal. “Bahrain is the perfect melting pot of history and innovation, making it an ideal place for weddings that celebrate both tradition and modernity.”
The design concept for the wedding was deeply inspired by Hetal’s ancestral ties to Bahrain, aiming to blend her family’s legacy with her love for art. “I wanted to weave Hetal’s history and heritage into the celebration,” Dandy explained. One of the key features was the artistic evening, where Hetal and Dishen’s favourite painters were showcased, reflecting their personal styles. The Sangeet was transformed into a “Tapestry of Life,” an installation that celebrated their cultural roots, while the reception evoked the grandeur of Mughalinspired aesthetics with a contemporary twist.
Dandy Salvino shared her heartfelt wishes for Hetal and Dishen, encouraging them to continue valuing their roots. “May you always cherish your heritage and pass on the legacy of love, family and tradition,” Dandy said. Reflecting on their wedding as a beautiful representation of their journey, she added, “Your wedding was a reflection of your values and love for family and I hope that love carries forward in your life together.” Dandy concluded with a wish for their future: “May your love story be like a tapestry, woven together to create something timeless and meaningful.”
Blending traditional elements with modern flair posed its challenges. Dandy elaborated, “It’s about understanding the couple’s essence and translating that into design. Balancing cultural authenticity with contemporary style requires a thoughtful approach, ensuring every detail feels purposeful.”
Bahrain itself played a significant role in the wedding’s success. Dandy emphasised the unmatched hospitality
Dandy Salvino expressed her heartfelt gratitude to Bahrain, a country that has significantly impacted her life. “I was once a stranger here, but Bahrain made it possible for me to share my vision and bring dreams to life,” she shares. Dandy also thanks her team, husband Lawrence, and collaborators for their unwavering support. “Together, we’ve created something extraordinary,”

Over the past 32 years, Divya Fashions has expanded to seven branches across Bahrain. The key to its success lies in offering a vast variety of high-quality fabrics at reasonable prices, ensuring there is something for every customer. The loyalty and support of the Bahraini community has been integral to the brand’s growth, with customers returning for the exceptional service and variety provided.
Being a family-run business, every member plays a vital role in the daily operations. The name ‘Divya’ is a tribute to Mr Badlani’s wife, Divya Badlani, adding a personal touch to the brand’s identity.

Hasham’s creative process begins with an initial client meeting. “After this, I start off with a mood board for the looks and style, followed by a personality board to layer it up,” he says. His sources of inspiration are varied, stemming from his motivation, self-love and years of expertise. Among his many accomplishments, one project stands out as particularly memorable – designing and styling a window display for New Look
Hasham Baig has carved a unique niche for himself in the Kingdom as a fashion stylist and art director. He shares his passions and inspirations with Woman This Month, gleaned from nearly 15 years of experience in the industry, and discusses his exciting plans for his fashion consultancy, La Mode.
Clothing’s flagship store on Oxford Street, London. “My creative ability to think out of the box made it stand out,” he recalls. “In fact, this is an important skill to have in this ever-changing industry as staying relevant requires constant vigilance. Research, research and research is vital, including exploring and looking at fashion forecasts through different resources.”
“Collaboration also plays a very important role in getting final executions done, whether it’s with photographers, makeup artists, clothes or accessories. It is teamwork that makes a masterpiece.”
Hasham believes Bahrain holds great potential for a thriving fashion scene. “Some people follow fashion, but some don’t due to cultural aspects or lack of exposure compared to Europe or other countries,” he observes. “Although Dubai is the leading fashion hub in the GCC, I believe Bahrain can achieve similar prominence in the future.”
As for his advice to budding stylists and aspiring art directors, he offers the three tenets: “Research, think out of the box and never give up.” He will put these into practice himself this year with his many projects in the pipeline, including on working on personal styling and designing wardrobes for professionals who struggle with daily looks according to trends and seasons.
Timeless Fashion Meets Sustainable Style
Becca’s Closet offers curated high-end vintage pieces while fostering a community committed to eco-friendly fashion. Edwin D’Souza chatted with owner Lani Price to discover her personal journey and dedication to redefine second-hand style.
Lani’s passion for high-end vintage fashion was inspired by a deep personal connection to her grandmother, Becca, who instilled in her a love for quality fabrics and expert stitching. “As a little girl, I would sit at my grandmother’s feet while she shared stories of her love for fashion,” she recalls. “She taught me etiquette, poise and grace.”
After her grandmother passed away, Lani opened several boxes of her belongings. Instead of feeling sadness, she found “luxurious fabrics and stunning pieces” that seemed to transcend time. “It was on that life-changing day that I developed a love for designer vintage,” she says, which eventually led to the creation of Becca’s Closet.
At Becca’s Closet, sustainability is paramount. Pieces are sourced from local stores, charities and even customers, with each item handpicked for its quality. “I focus on high-end brands of exceptional design and fabric,” she shares. “Most pieces have never been worn and are still with tags.” For preloved pieces, any damage is carefully repaired, ensuring a long life for the garments.
What sets Becca’s Closet apart from other second-hand brands is its commitment to luxury and accessibility. “I curate high-end pieces that are made for longevity,” Lani explains. “Designer clothes often have a higher chance of reusability because they’re built to last.” Additionally, the brand offers a rental service for evening gowns, encouraging customers to try new styles without
the commitment of one-time wear.
One of her proudest moments came when a customer, who struggled with body image, found a dress that made her feel beautiful. “When she tried it on for the first time, she cried and said: ‘I never thought I could ever look this beautiful again.’ That moment will stay with me forever,” says Lani.
Becca’s Closet also fosters a sense of community, with opportunities for customers to engage in workshops, volunteer and collaborate. “We achieve more together than we could alone,” she affirms.
By prioritising sustainability and high-quality fashion, Becca’s Closet is at the forefront of the growing ‘green’ fashion movement. “The future is bright for sustainable fashion, and I see Becca’s Closet as one of the innovators in this movement,” she concludes.
How to Dress this Valentine’s 2025, Whatever The Occasion! 5 Valentine’s Day Outfit Ideas!
Valentine’s Day is an amazing opportunity to make big plans and celebrate love in all its many forms. Whether you plan on spending the day with a significant other, friends or family, or riding solo, it’s a holiday that gives us an excuse to dress up and have fun. But it can be nerve-racking finding the right outfit to match the occasion and the frustration could leave you not wanting to participate at all.
Luckily, if you’re standing in front of your closet with big plans but zero Valentine’s Day outfit ideas, you’ve come to the right place. Don’t worry, save those frown lines. You are going to look amazing! From heart-shaped handbags to satin dresses and everything in between, here are the best tips on how to dress this Valentine’s Day, no matter the occasion!
The First Valentine’s
Your first Valentine’s day is always special: there is the excitement of the unknown mixed with a bunch of nerves, and, unfortunate for you, the tendency to overthink your clothing choices. When it comes to your outfit, it’s very important not to overdue it here. Simplicity is key! Let’s hold off on the pink-heart tights and “Forever Yours” sweater and save that for the second Valentine’s Day. Subtle and casual with a hint of festive is the way forward. Opt for form-fitting jeans, a neutral colored sweater with a pop of red or pink, and a statement accessory that screams “I embrace the day of love”! Top it off with a sultry red lip and you are guaranteed a winning outfit combination that will not disappoint.
The Stay-at-Home Hottie
Just say no to the granny panties!
Please! At least for one day. If your beloved partner has zero expectation for you to open the bedroom door in something beribboned or with little fabric, then a satin nightdress with a delicate lace trim is just what the love doctor ordered. If it’s just you and your partner, dining on the couch and watching Netflix in your pyjamas, upgrade that set to a silky pair to make the night more interesting.
If you’re celebrating solo, you go girl! Draw a warm bath, (add dried rose petals for a luxurious touch), and soak the night away. Put on your favorite robe, comfy slippers and give yourself some welldeserved “me time”. Feeling courageous? Buy that cheeky mini slip you’ve been coveting but were too afraid to purchase. Trust me, you’ll be happy you did once you see how amazing you look in it.
Galentine’s Girly
If Valentine’s Day is all about celebrating love, then let’s not forget some of the most important loving relationships in our lives: our girlfriends. If you’re lucky enough to have them, they will lift you up when you’re down and push you forward when you need a boost. With your girls you can be your most eccentric and authentic self, so go all out! Wear the big bows and the flowery dresses! Be as bold as you want be! Your girls will be right there to support you and tell you how stunning you look! Want to make Galentine’s day even more exciting? Opt for everyone to wear the same color. Or have everyone sport matching accessories in their hair. Sky’s the limit to where you can take this. Make it fun and unique, but most importantly, make it memorable!
The Getaway Gal
Perhaps you’re planning a weekend trip to Dubai or a staycation close to home. If you’re getting away from your daily life, habits and/or routine for Valentine’s Day then it’s the opportune time to dress away from your daily life. Be bold and try something new. If you’re normally a jeans and top kinda gal why not switch it up and try a classy shirt dress or playsuit. If you tend to dress conservatively for work then go for a more revealing but polished combo, like an off-shoulder maxi dress. And don’t be afraid to try a new color. Valentine’s Day is the perfect excuse to experiment with different shades of red and pink. The takeaway here is to step away from the norm and embrace the new—and what better way to do that than with your outfit on the day of love? Just make sure your clothing is comfy and loose! Traveling with clothes that are too tight is never ideal.
Single and Ready to Mingle
Whether you’re single and ready to mingle or singleand-leave-me-alone-thank-you-very-much, Valentine’s Day is the perfect day to celebrate your awesome self! If you’re looking to find your perfect match, the best way to attract someone is with confidence! Wear whatever makes you feel beautiful and your confidence will radiate—be it your go-to LBD, a vintage leather jacket, or your favorite pair of thighhigh boots… whatever it is, just be your authentic self. If you have no interest in pairing up, make this day all about numero uno. Pull out your designer purse, spritz on your favorite perfume, and get out there and explore. There’s a big beautiful world out there. Put those Jimmy Choo’s to work and start walking. Try a new restaurant or coffee shop. Visit a part of town that you’ve neve seen. Be open and be willing and enjoy every moment. This is your time and there are no limits.

Rising star Nadia Iqbal is making waves in the music industry with her powerful voice, modern style and upcoming collaborations, inspiring aspiring artists and shaping Bahrain’s vibrant sound scene.
Ms. Iqbal is a talented and dynamic artist whose journey started with a significant collaboration with NUH Production, a move that helped launch her career. It was here that her exceptional vocal talent was spotted by the renowned director Asif Masood, whose impressive portfolio includes collaborations with celebrated artists such as Ali Zafar, Rahat Fateh Ali Khan and Atif Aslam. Reflecting on her breakthrough, Nadia says: “I want to encourage minority talented females around the world. If I can do it, anyone else can do it!”
When it comes to her performances, Nadia embraces modern themes that resonate with today’s younger generation. “My music is a fusion of contemporary styles, and I love to use my platform to convey messages of empowerment and positivity,” she explains. “My upcoming album, a collaboration with Bollywood sensation Yo Yo Honey Singh, amplifies modern themes that suit the younger generation, and it is something I want to carry through to my future collaboration.”
Creativity, Nadia believes, is a result of continuous practice and self-care. “Creativity comes with practice; the more you pamper yourself, the more output you get,” she shares, offering insight into her creative process. This mindset has allowed her to evolve as an artist over time, gaining recognition and building a solid fan base. “There are many talent agencies out there. She’s set to perform alongside the legendary Panjabi MC and will also headline a three-day solo concert at La Rosa Hotel in Jufair this February. “I’m very happy to soon sign contracts with agencies in the UAE and the USA. Everything is in the pipeline,” she shares enthusiastically.

IN HER SHOES
If your shoes could talk, what story would they tell?
Teaching our children good hygiene practices is an important stage in their development. Ouiam El Hassani shares her tips on how to approach this occasionally awkward challenge.
As mums, we get how important it is to help our kids build good habits early on. When they hit those tween years, personal hygiene becomes a huge deal. (It starts that first time you get a whiff of some serious body odour coming from your once sweet-smelling baby!) Bringing up this topic can feel awkward, but with some smart strategies, you can have a candid conversation that steers your tween toward developing consistent personal hygiene routines.
Timing is key. Find a moment when it’s just the two of you without any distractions. A relaxed, private setting works best – like a casual walk, in the car or while you’re fixing a snack or meal. It is helpful if you can make some eye contact every now and then, but not constantly staring them down. Why? It keeps you feeling connected without making it seem like a big lecture.
Create a relaxed vibe where your tween feels comfortable talking about personal stuff. Reassure them you’re there to help and support, not criticise or judge. Start with an observation like: “Hey, I wanted to get your thoughts on something. I just discovered this new (fill in the blank) personal care product. I thought you might want to check it out.”
Start by discussing why good hygiene is so important. Explain it’s a huge part of growing up, staying healthy and feeling confident socially. Break down what this includes: teeth, skin, hair and body odour. Helping them see it’s just an extension of what you’ve already been doing as a parent by bathing them and brushing their hair and teeth. But now they’re taking over those responsibilities. They will really get it once you point out the embarrassing thought of you still bathing them at their current age! Share some personal stories or examples that drive home why hygiene matters. This could be something from your own teen years or a friend’s experience figuring it out.
Shift the focus from just another chore to taking care of themselves. Discuss how practicing self-care sets you up to feel good every day. Emphasise all the good things that come from great hygiene habits, like feeling fresh and confident, staying healthy and making a good impression around friends. Say something like: “Doesn’t that shower feel amazing?” after they’ve gotten ready or: “It feels so good to smell nice!”
Model good hygiene yourself. Kids often learn by watching, so setting a good example can be powerful. Frame hygiene as everyone’s responsibility in the family. Create shared routines together, like a morning or evening schedule that builds in hygiene time.
Encourage your tween to ask any questions that come up. Create an environment where they feel safe sharing any curiosities or concerns about hygiene stuff. If a question surprises you, try to keep your cool and neutral tone. If you’re unsure of an answer, you can always say you’ll look into it together.
Pay close attention to their thoughts and feelings on the topic. Actively listening builds trust and brings you closer, making those future convos way easier.
Having the hygiene talk with your tween can actually be a bonding experience. By coming at it with empathy, understanding and some low-key strategies, you’re not just guiding them toward better hygiene –you’re opening up good communication that’ll benefit your relationship all throughout those teen years.
