Building a Strong Future
His Excellency Rami Saleh Wreikat Al Adwan, Ambassador of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan to the Kingdom of Bahrain, discusses the enduring Jordan-Bahrain ties in this exclusive interview with Bahrain This Month.
Thank you so much for taking the time to sit down with us, Excellency. Firstly, can you tell us about your diplomatic career to date?
I am honoured to serve as the Jordanian Ambassador to Bahrain, building on my extensive experience in diplomacy, governance and youth development. Previously, I was the first Secretary General of the Ministry of Political and Parliamentary Affairs, strengthening ties between legislative and executive authorities. I also chaired the Parties Affairs Committee under the 2015 Political Parties Law. I have held key roles, including Minister of Youth, Advisor to the Prime Minister and board member of major economic institutions. Before my diplomatic career, I served in the Jordanian Armed Forces. I hold a Master’s in Private Law and a Bachelor’s in Business Administration.
Jordan and Bahrain share strong historical ties. What is the current state of bilateral relations and how do you foresee their evolution in the coming years?
Jordanian-Bahraini relations are built on strong, brotherly ties, strengthened by HM King Abdullah II and HM King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa. Both nations share aligned visions on regional
and international issues, particularly the Palestinian cause, advocating a two-state solution based on the 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as Palestine’s capital. Looking ahead, their partnership is set to grow, with increased cooperation across economic, security and cultural sectors, achieving tangible progress on the ground.
What are the key areas of cooperation between Jordan and Bahrain, particularly in trade, investment and Fintech?
On January 5, 2023 we held the 5th session of the JordanianBahraini Joint Higher Committee meetings in Manama, hosted by HRH Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Crown Prince and Prime Minister. During this meeting many agreements were signed. Jordan this year, will host the 6th session of the JordanianBahraini Joint Higher Committee meetings in Amman. Jordan and Bahrain have strong trade and investment ties, with an increasing focus on emerging sectors. Both nations recognise the importance of innovation and digital transformation in financial services.
Given the current geopolitical challenges in the region, how do Jordan and Bahrain collaborate on maintaining regional stability and security?
Stating from the special relations, both countries’ consultations regarding regional issues and challenges are regularly and openly discussed, and we share a high level of coordination in this regard. Jordan and Bahrain play a pivotal role in counterterrorism efforts and peacekeeping initiatives, additionally a key partner in ensuring maritime security and supporting regional defence alliances.
How has Jordan been actively involved in humanitarian efforts, particularly regarding refugees?
Jordan continues to uphold its humanitarian role, hosting a large number of refugees, which accounts for 30 percent of its population. The international community must bear its responsibility for refugees, as the most recent influx was the Syrian refugee crisis, with approximately 1.3 million refugees. This has increased pressure on Jordan’s economy, particularly concerning the unemployment rate among Jordanian youth. In addition to the pressure on the infrastructure and the natural resources especially for hosting communities.
Education and cultural exchanges play a significant role in strengthening relations between countries. Are there any new initiatives between Jordan and Bahrain to promote these fields?
Education and cultural ties between Jordan and Bahrain continue to strengthen through various agreements. The Executive Programme for Educational Cooperation (20232025) promotes collaboration in developing educational systems, exchanging expertise in education technology and enhancing cooperation in higher education and research. In 2023 and 2024, Jordan’s Ministry of Education recognised seven new Bahraini institutions, including Bahrain University College, the American University of Bahrain and the British University of Bahrain. Previously recognised universities include the University of Bahrain, Arabian Gulf University and RCSI Bahrain. These efforts reinforce the strong educational and research partnerships between both nations, fostering deeper academic and cultural collaboration.
If a Bahraini visitor were to visit Jordan for the first time, what are the top three places or experiences you would recommend?
Jordan offers a wealth of must-visit destinations, complemented by the warm hospitality of its people. Amman, the vibrant capital, blends history with modern culture, featuring landmarks like the Citadel and Roman Theatre. Petra, a UNESCO World Heritage site, showcases stunning rock-cut architecture, while Wadi Rum’s desert landscapes offer adventure and Bedouin hospitality. Visitors can also experience the serene waters of the Dead Sea and Red Sea, explore the historic ruins of Um Qays, and visit the sacred Baptism Site at the Jordan River.
As Bahrain’s longest-standing diplomat, how have your family settled here and enjoyed spending a major part of their lives here?
What distinguishes Bahrainis most is their kindness and generosity. As a Jordanian diplomat, Bahrain has been a welcoming second home for my family and me. Over the years, we have built strong friendships and embraced the warm hospitality of its people. The country’s diverse culture, vibrant community and family-friendly environment have made our experience truly enriching. We have enjoyed exploring Bahrain’s heritage, engaging in community events and forming meaningful connections that we will always cherish.

Stepping Out Of Comfort Zones
After a rollercoaster stint in the Bigg Boss house, actor Vivian Dsena opens up about life’s challenges, his self-discoveries and the role Bahrain plays in keeping him grounded.
Mr. Dsena’s time on Bigg Boss was nothing short of transformative. Reflecting on his journey, the actor described the experience as “a roller coaster ride,” marked by emotional highs and lows. “Bigg Boss’ house is a place where your emotions are on the surface. There are moments where you feel like losing your cool, but you have to stay calm and true to yourself,” Mr. Dsena shares.
One of the most challenging aspects for him was adapting to the captive reality format. “The idea of being confined was very challenging, which is why I said no to the show for many years. Finally, thanks to my wife and the show’s team, I decided to challenge myself,” he says. The separation from his family was particularly tough, given his close bond with them. “I’m someone who likes to stay in touch with my family every day, if not every hour. That was the hardest part.”
Mr. Dsena also discovered new facets of his personality during the show. “I worked on managing my anger. It’s a very human emotion, but Bigg Boss taught me to stay calm and composed even in difficult situations,” he explains. Overcoming the fear of being in a confined space and learning to control his temper were significant milestones for him.
Away from the glare of cameras, Bahrain holds a special place in Mr. Dsena’s heart. “Bahrain is like a second home. It’s peaceful, relaxing and helps me maintain my sanity amidst the chaos of work. It’s my getaway from the professional hustle,” he says. The country’s calm environment and his family’s presence on the island make it his perfect retreat.
Despite not being overly social in Bahrain, Mr. Dsena has felt an overwhelming sense of recognition and support. “Surprisingly, not just Indians but even Bahraini fans have shown me immense love, especially during Bigg Boss. It’s heartwarming to receive such support in a place where I haven’t even worked,” he notes.
Looking ahead, Mr. Dsena remains grounded and grateful. “God has been kind. My fans have made me who I am today. I’m just a hardworking guy, but the credit goes to them. I promise to continue entertaining in my own way,” he concludes with heartfelt gratitude.
“I worked on managing my anger. It’s a very human emotion, but Bigg Boss taught me to stay calm and composed even in difficult situations.”

Commitment to Empowering Communities
“It’s essential that we nurture a spirit of service early to ensure a future that continues to give.”
- Basel Aryan
The Rotary Club of Seef Bahrain, led by its President, Basel Aryan, is dedicated to initiating community-enhancing charitable projects across Bahrain, demonstrating the power of service and leadership.
“My journey with this incredible organisation stretches back to the inception of the club as a chartered member,” Mr. Aryan explains. “From the very start, I served on the board of directors, gradually taking on more responsibilities each year until I was honoured to step into the role of President.”
Despite its recent formation five years ago, the Rotary Club of Seef Bahrain has significantly impacted the local community. “We’ve launched several initiatives, from supporting cancer patients through our Medical Fund to helping physically challenged students with their educational needs,” Mr. Aryan notes. The club is also active in campaigns such as Breast Cancer Awareness and extensive Ramadan initiatives that distribute food baskets and Iftar meals.
The society’s global reach extends through contributions to Rotary International’s PolioPlus Fund. Mr. Aryan proudly states: “This effort has been pivotal in reducing polio cases worldwide to single digits.”
Fundraising Initiatives
A major fundraising event is the Rotary’s annual Padel Tournament, alongside smaller community gatherings that encourage wider participation and support.
“These events are crucial, they bring our community together for a common cause,” Mr. Aryan explains. Its efforts range from local clothes distributions to international aid like the ‘Hand-in-Hand for Beirut’ campaign in response to the Beirut port explosion.
The club has also focused on fostering future leaders by establishing Interact and EarlyAct clubs in local schools. “It’s essential that we nurture a spirit of service early to ensure a future that continues to give,” says Mr. Aryan.
A Charitable Future
Looking forward, the club is preparing to launch MaRiva in 2025, a project aimed at revitalising Bahrain’s marine ecosystems.
Mr. Aryan is enthusiastic about the initiative: “MaRiva will tackle issues from marine pollution to habitat restoration. It’s about making a sustainable impact, ensuring our marine life thrives for generations.”
With a clear mission to serve passionately and lead by example, Mr. Aryan invites everyone to join the Rotary Club of Seef Bahrain in their efforts to forge a better future. “Our mission is clear: to make a significant, positive impact – one project at a time.
“Despite my commitments as a businessman, I firmly believe that we must all dedicate time to serve our community. The impact of giving back is profound. What drives me the most is seeing the reaction of those we help of joy, relief and gratitude that come from even the smallest acts of kindness.”

Celebrating the Holy Month Ramadan
Ramadan, the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, is a sacred period marked by fasting, prayer and reflection. Observed by Muslims worldwide, this month commemorates the revelation of the Qur’an to the Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him).
During Ramadan, from dawn to sunset, Muslims abstain from eating, drinking and other physical needs to purify the soul, refocus attention on Allah and practise self-discipline and sacrifice.
In Bahrain, Ramadan is celebrated with great reverence and community spirit. The days are punctuated by the soothing sounds of prayer, while the nights come alive with families and friends gathering to break their fasts together. Iftar, the meal eaten after sunset, features a spread of succulent dishes ranging from local specialties to international cuisines. As night falls, the festivities continue with Ghabga, a vibrant, latenight gathering that serves as a prelude to Suhoor, the final meal in the early hours before the fast resumes.
In this feature, Bahrain This Month dives into the heart of these celebrations, with a particular focus on exploring the eclectic dining options available during Ramadan. Our feature will guide readers through the best Iftar and Ghabga experiences across the Kingdom’s amazing spectrum of hospitality venues, highlighting not only traditional Bahraini fare but also innovative culinary delights that cater to the cosmopolitan palate. Beyond gastronomy, we will also shed light on Ramadan’s cultural significance, take a look at the events happening in our community and offer advice on how to keep fit and battle fatigue in this unique month.
Staying Fit During Ramadan
Bahrain This Month’s resident health buff, Edwin D’Souza, offers his advice to help you stay active, nourished and hydrated for a balanced and healthy Ramadan.
Maintaining fitness during Ramadan can be challenging, especially when balancing fasting with daily routines. However, with mindful adjustments to your workout schedule and lifestyle, it is possible to stay active and healthy throughout the holy month. The key lies in listening to your body, staying hydrated during non-fasting hours and adopting a flexible approach to exercise.
Fasting for long hours can lead to lower energy levels, making it important to choose the right time for physical activity. Many find that exercising after Iftar, once the body is replenished with food and water, is the most effective. This allows for more intense workouts without the risk of dehydration or fatigue. For those who prefer exercising before Iftar, opting for lighter activities like walking or gentle stretching can help maintain fitness without overexertion.
Hydration plays a crucial role in maintaining energy and overall health. Drinking sufficient water between Iftar and Suhoor helps replenish fluids lost during the
day, reducing the risk of dehydration, especially in warmer climates such as one experiences in Bahrain. Including hydrating foods such as fruits and vegetables in meals can also support fluid balance. It is advisable to avoid caffeinated drinks, as they can lead to increased fluid loss.
Nutrition is equally important during Ramadan. Consuming balanced meals rich in complex carbohydrates, lean proteins and healthy fats can provide sustained energy throughout the fasting hours. Foods with a low glycaemic index help release energy slowly, keeping you fuller for longer. Avoiding heavy, greasy foods can prevent sluggishness and digestive discomfort, allowing for better performance during physical activities.
Rest and recovery should not be overlooked. The altered sleep patterns during Ramadan can impact physical performance, making it essential to prioritise quality rest. Short naps during the day can help compensate for reduced night-time sleep, ensuring
the body remains energised and ready for exercise. Ultimately, staying fit during Ramadan is about balance. It is not necessary to push yourself to achieve personal bests or maintain the same workout intensity as usual. Instead, focusing on consistency, mindful movement and proper nutrition will help maintain your fitness levels without compromising your health. Embracing a flexible routine that aligns with the spiritual and physical demands of Ramadan can lead to a fulfilling and healthy month.

Respecting Ramadan
Ramadan is the holiest month in the Islamic calendar.
For non-Muslims living or working in a Muslim-majority society, understanding its significance and being mindful of certain customs can help create a respectful and harmonious environment.
Fasting and Public Etiquette
During Ramadan, Muslims fast from dawn to sunset, refraining from food, drink, smoking and other physical needs. While non-Muslims are not expected to fast, it is important to be considerate of those who do. Avoid eating, drinking or smoking in public spaces, including offices, cars and common areas, as this can be seen as disrespectful and could actually land you a fine or even prison in Bahrain. Many restaurants and cafes remain closed during daylight hours, and some places may have designated areas where nonfasting individuals can eat discreetly.
Workplace Considerations
Colleagues who are fasting may experience lower energy levels, particularly in the late afternoon. Being patient and offering support where possible can make a significant difference. If work schedules allow, consider taking on extra tasks or adjusting meeting times to accommodate those who may find it difficult to focus during fasting hours. Some workplaces implement shorter working hours for Muslim employees, so flexibility and understanding are key during this time.
Social Interactions and Greetings
Muslims often increase their spiritual and charitable activities during Ramadan, spending more time in prayer and self-reflection. If greeting someone during this month, the phrase ‘Ramadan Mubarak’ or ‘Ramadan Kareem’ is a thoughtful way to show respect. Be mindful that social gatherings may be postponed until after sunset, when the fast is broken with the Iftar meal. If invited to an Iftar, it is polite to accept, and bringing a small gift, such as dates or sweets, is a kind gesture.
Understanding Changes in Daily Life
Life in a Muslim-majority society changes noticeably during Ramadan. Businesses, government offices and schools may operate on reduced hours, while nightlife becomes more vibrant after Iftar. Roads and public transport may be particularly busy before sunset as people rush home to break their fast. Planning ahead and allowing extra travel time can help avoid frustration.
Respecting Prayer and Religious Observances
Muslims engage in additional prayers during Ramadan, particularly the nightly Taraweeh prayers. Be mindful of this when scheduling events or making social plans. If you live near a mosque, you may notice an increase in late-night activity and early morning prayers. Showing patience and respect for these observances fosters goodwill and community spirit.
By demonstrating understanding and making small adjustments, non-Muslims can contribute to a more inclusive and respectful environment during Ramadan. Acknowledging the significance of this sacred month and supporting Muslim friends, colleagues and neighbours helps strengthen social bonds and mutual respect.

GERGA’OON: Bahrain’s Joyful Tradition
Gerga’oon is one of Bahrain’s most famous traditions. A mid-Ramadan celebration, it unites communities through children’s songs, traditional dress and the sharing of sweets, reflecting values of generosity, unity and cultural heritage.
The word Gerga’oon is believed to derive from the Gulf Arabic term referring to the sound of sweets rattling in bags as children collect their treats. Sometimes known as ‘the Bahraini Halloween’, it is celebrated in the middle of the Holy Month, serving as a moment to recognise the fasting efforts of young children while strengthening social bonds within neighbourhoods. Traditionally, children dress in colourful embroidered attire – boys wearing white thobes with gold or silver embellishments and girls donning bright dresses with gold jewellery and elaborate headpieces.
The evening begins with children gathering in groups, moving door to door across their neighbourhoods while singing traditional Gerga’oon songs. Their chants include blessings upon the household and requests for sweets, nuts or small gifts. Residents warmly welcome the children, offering treats in decorative bags or bowls, symbolising the generosity and hospitality that are deeply embedded in Bahraini culture.
One of the most popular chants includes the phrase: ‘Aatona Allah Ya’atikom, Bait Makkah Ywaddikom’ meaning: ‘Give to us and may Allah give to you; may He send you to the House in Mecca.’ Such verses reflect the spiritual aspect of Gerga’oon, intertwining faith and festivity.
Beyond the sweets and songs, Gerga’oon holds a deeper significance in Bahrain. It fosters a sense of community, reminding families of the importance of neighbourly bonds and collective celebration. In an age where modern lifestyles can lead to social detachment, Gerga’oon revives traditional values, encouraging unity and strengthening familial and communal ties.
The celebration also instils key virtues in children such as sharing, gratitude and respect for elders. Participating in Gerga’oon teaches them about the spirit of giving and the value of kindness which are central tenets of Ramadan.
In recent years, the celebration has evolved to include larger gatherings and commercial elements. Shopping centres and community halls host Gerga’oon events with businesses creating themed decorations and sweet packages. While this modernisation brings convenience, many Bahrainis remain keen to preserve the traditional home-based spirit of the occasion.
Gerga’oon also plays a role in cultural preservation. Through its unique blend of song, dress and ritual, it passes down Bahraini heritage to younger generations. It is a celebration that bridges past and present, ensuring that the values of generosity, unity and faith endure within Bahraini society.

“Being close to your team, truly listening to them and helping them grow creates a strong sense of family.”
- Abdelhameed Al-Mahsiri
Culinary Vision Unveiled
Abdelhameed Al-Mahsiri, Executive Chef of Areen Hospitality, shares insights on his journey, Charthouse Bahrain’s culinary philosophy, Ramadan delights and the challenges of luxury dining while shaping the future of Bahrain’s gastronomy.
What inspired your culinary career and how did you join Charthouse Bahrain and LPOD?
I grew up watching my mum paint and explore different forms of art. At the same time, I was fascinated by her cooking, which sparked my curiosity. I often asked her: “If this painting were edible, what would it taste like?” She would smile and say: “I guess you’ll have to find out.” That curiosity ultimately led me to pursue culinary arts.
How would you define Charthouse’s culinary philosophy and how do you blend luxury with cultural influence?
Charthouse and LPOD are part of Areen Hospitality, a rapidly growing company taking on major projects under the leadership of Dr. Essa Faqeeh, an experienced and talented figure in the hospitality industry. I believe the future holds exciting opportunities and I would love to be part of this journey alongside such a strong management team.
What sets the dining experience at Charthouse apart in Bahrain’s fine-dining scene?
Charthouse is a growing culinary project that focuses on serving sustainable, high-quality ingredients in dishes that are simple, yet refreshing and diverse.
Can you highlight a signature Ramadan dish and what makes it unique?
Charthouse offers a unique twist inspired by experiences in Mexico and the United States. Each dish showcases creativity and stands out on its own. The Gabgha set menu package delivers a full Ramadan dining experience in a single tray, featuring a selection of appetisers, a choice of main course and refreshing drinks.
Which culinary trends excite you and how do you incorporate them while maintaining Charthouse’s identity?
At Charthouse, we don’t just follow trends, we create our own by blending diverse cultures and dining habits in a way that resonates with our guests.
What challenges do you face in a luxury kitchen and how do you ensure consistency?
One of the biggest hurdles we face is ensuring the quality of imported products, especially with global political issues affecting shipping. Being on an island adds another layer of complexity, making logistics even more demanding.
How do you inspire creativity and teamwork within your culinary team?
Being close to your team, truly listening to them and helping them grow creates a strong sense of family. I always remind my team that we spend more time together in the kitchen than we do with our own families, which makes us one big family. Empowering team members to express their ideas and embrace creativity is key.
What has been your most memorable moment as a chef?
The unforgettable experience of introducing the traditional falafel dish to the menu of a prestigious Michelin-starred restaurant in Chicago.
What advice would you give to aspiring chefs?
Focus on yourself, work hard and dedicate yourself to learning. Tune out the noise of social media and create your own unique story.
What are your future culinary aspirations or upcoming projects?
Position Areen Hospitality’s culinary department as the premier culinary team in the region by 2030.

Bahrain’s Ultimate Tea Destination
Jose Matos, CEO of Trans Arabia, has introduced Bahrain’s first dedicated Tea Boutique, offering a unique selection of premium teas and an immersive experience unlike anything else in the region.
Mr. Matos, a seasoned entrepreneur with decades of experience in the Middle East, has built a strong reputation in the food and beverage industry, securing exclusive distributorships for renowned brands. His latest venture, however, is deeply personal: a space where tea lovers can explore, taste and appreciate high-quality blends in a way that has never been done before in the region.
“The concept is completely unique,”Mr. Matos explains. “There are tea lounges, but nothing like this. This is a place where people can come in, experience tea in different forms and purchase exclusive blends that aren’t available in the retail market.”
Located at The Diplomat Radisson Blu Hotel, Residence & Spa, the Tea Boutique is not just about selling tea; it’s about creating an experience.
Mr. Matos, a native Portuguese and a passionate advocate for high-quality tea, has partnered with Dilmah, a globally respected Sri Lankan tea brand known for its commitment to ethical sourcing and sustainability. His relationship with Dilmah began years ago when he convinced the company to grant him the food service distributorship for Bahrain. Today, he holds an impressive market share, supplying over 85 percent of Bahrain’s fivestar hotels with premium tea blends.
Beyond the teas themselves, the Tea Boutique is also a hub for tea education. Mr. Matos emphasises the importance of training and knowledge, offering tea workshops and tastings for both customers and hospitality professionals. Staff at the Tea Boutique undergo rigorous training, including trips to Sri Lanka’s School of Tea, where they learn the intricate details of tea cultivation, preparation and service.
Mr. Matos believes that the Middle East’s tea culture is evolving, albeit slowly. “In Asia, people are much more experimental with tea, using it creatively in food and cocktails,” he notes. “Here, people tend to stick to what they know. But we’re seeing a growing interest, especially through online orders, where flavoured and speciality teas are becoming more popular.”
Sustainability and corporate responsibility are also central to the Tea Boutique’s ethos. A significant portion of Dilmah’s profits go towards community initiatives, including education and support for tea plantation workers and their families. “When you have a cup of tea, you’re not just enjoying great quality – you’re also contributing to a bigger cause,” Mr. Matos says.
Looking ahead, Mr. Matos is keen to see how the Tea Boutique develops before considering expansion. “For now, we’re focused on making this a success,” he says. “But if the response continues to be positive, who knows what the future holds?”

Tea Mixology Unleashed
Each month, we highlight a tea-infused mocktail, showcasing how Dilmah’s premium blends can be transformed into exquisite drinks that refresh and delight. This feature aims to inspire tea lovers and mixologists alike, proving that tea can be as versatile in a glass as it is in a teacup.
Tea is no longer just a comforting hot beverage; it has become a key ingredient in creative mixology, offering a depth of flavour that elevates drinks to new heights. Whether infused into syrups, blended with fruit or chilled for refreshing iced beverages, tea adds complexity and sophistication to your drinks.
This month’s featured recipe, Oasis (Minty Mango), is a vibrant and refreshing mocktail that perfectly balances tropical sweetness with cooling mint and floral undertones. The combination of mango, rose syrup and Moroccan mint green tea results in a drink that is both aromatic and revitalising – ideal for warm days or an elegant afternoon tea experience.
To prepare, brew and chill the Moroccan mint green tea. Fill a glass with ice cubes, then pour in the mango mix, rose syrup and chilled tea. Stir well to blend the flavours, then garnish with a fresh slice of mango and sprigs of mint for an elegant finish. A true celebration of tea’s versatility.

Qatar
Heritage, Innovation, Luxury
Where Past Meets Future
When Bahrain This Month’s Chairman and Publisher, George Middleton, visited Qatar as a guest of Visit Qatar, he discovered that while its glittering skyline and global influence are well known, the true essence of the country lies in the seamless coexistence of heritage, innovation and luxury.
Few destinations capture the balance between history and progress as effortlessly as Doha. The Souq Waqif, a centuries-old marketplace, transports visitors to a bygone era. Here, the scent of spices fills the air as traders sell gold, perfumes and textiles much as they have for generations. Wandering its narrow alleys, one gets a sense of Qatar’s deep-rooted heritage, unspoiled by time.
Yet just minutes away, Msheireb Downtown presents a strikingly different vision. As one of the world’s most sustainable smart cities, it combines heritage-inspired architecture with cutting-edge technology, featuring solar-powered trams, energy-efficient buildings and a pedestrianfriendly design that reflects Qatar’s vision for the future.
The contrast continues at the National Museum of Qatar (NMoQ), an architectural masterpiece designed by Jean Nouvel to resemble a desert rose. Inside, the immersive exhibitions trace Qatar’s evolution from its Bedouin roots to its emergence as a leader in energy, finance and culture. Through multimedia storytelling and interactive displays, the museum offers an in-depth look at the country’s past, present and aspirations for the future.
The Desert’s Untamed Beauty
Beyond the city, Qatar’s vast desert landscape offers an entirely different kind of spectacle. The Sealine Beach area, south of Doha, is a gateway to one of the most breath-taking desert experiences in the world.
For thrill-seekers, dune bashing in oversized Monster Buses delivers an adrenaline rush as drivers navigate towering sand dunes with gravity-defying skill. For a slower, more immersive experience, camel rides provide a glimpse into Qatar’s nomadic past, allowing visitors to experience the desert as travellers did centuries ago.
At the Visit Qatar Camp, the desert transforms into a cultural festival. Guests can witness traditional calligraphy, participate in a vibrant kite festival or enjoy a horse-riding demonstration. The evening culminates with a culinary competition, where chefs showcase the best of Qatari cuisine under the open sky. As night falls, a fireworks display illuminates the dunes, creating a scene as magical as it is unforgettable.
A Culinary Destination Like No Other
In a country that embraces luxury, it is no surprise that Qatar’s gastronomic scene is world-class. Whether indulging in authentic Middle Eastern fare or dining at Michelin-starred establishments, visitors are spoilt for choice.
A standout experience was Carbone, a restaurant that brings old-school Italian-American charm to Doha. Famed for its spicy rigatoni, veal parmesan and decadent tiramisu, Carbone offers an upscale yet nostalgic dining experience reminiscent of 1950s New York.
Meanwhile, Qinwan Café, nestled in Msheireb Downtown, offers a refined take on Qatari tradition. The café celebrates the country’s rich history of date cultivation, serving artisanal date-infused pastries paired with perfectly brewed Arabic coffee. It is the ideal place to pause and savour the moment amid the city’s energy.
For those seeking a true taste of Qatari hospitality, a majlis dining experience is a must. The majlis, a traditional gathering space, is where locals share stories over generous servings of machboos (spiced rice with meat), madrouba (creamy rice porridge) and an endless supply of fragrant karak tea.
A Global Sporting Powerhouse
Qatar’s passion for sports is undeniable. With its state-of-the-art infrastructure and bold vision, the country has rapidly positioned itself as a global leader in athletics. The FIFA World Cup 2022 was just the beginning of Qatar’s ambitious sporting future.
At the 3-2-1 Qatar Olympic and Sports Museum, visitors embark on an interactive journey through the history of global sports, Qatar’s sporting milestones and the science behind elite performance. Located within the Aspire Zone, the museum reflects Qatar’s commitment to athletic excellence.
Nearby, the Khalifa International Stadium stands as a symbol of Qatar’s sporting prowess. With cutting-edge cooling technology and world-class facilities, it is a venue designed to host the world’s biggest sporting events. As Qatar continues to invest in international tournaments, it cements its status as a sporting powerhouse.
A Destination Redefining Luxury Travel
Qatar is a country of contrasts – whether that’s ancient traditions coexisting with futuristic innovations, vast desert landscapes meeting towering cityscapes or golden sand dunes giving way to opulent shopping malls.
More than just a stopover, Qatar is a destination in its own right. Whether visiting for culture, adventure, gastronomy or sport, one thing is certain: Qatar is a country that never fails to impress.
Deals on Wheels
For many, owning a car in Bahrain is a necessity rather than a luxury. Whether it’s for the daily commute, family convenience or weekend drives, having a reliable vehicle is crucial. But with rising costs and an ever-expanding market, finding the right car at the right price can be challenging. That’s where Deals on Wheels comes in – your guide to navigating the local car market while staying within budget.
Buying a car on a budget doesn’t mean compromising on quality. With the right approach, it’s possible to find a reliable and efficient vehicle without breaking the bank.
One of the biggest mistakes budget-conscious buyers make is focusing solely on the purchase price. While a low price tag may seem appealing, it’s important to consider the long-term costs. A car with poor fuel economy or high maintenance expenses can quickly turn a bargain into a financial burden. Checking the vehicle’s service history, mileage and spare parts availability can prevent costly surprises down the line. Additionally, researching insurance rates for different models can help avoid unexpected expenses after purchase.
When buying a budget car, reliability is key. Look for models known for durability and low maintenance costs – researching customer reviews and reliability ratings can help. Always inspect the car’s service history; a well-maintained vehicle is less likely to cause expensive issues later. Check for signs of wear and tear, especially in the tires, brakes and suspension. If buying second-hand, get a trusted mechanic to inspect the vehicle for hidden problems. Ensure the car’s paperwork is in order, including registration and insurance history. Finally, test drive the car to assess performance, comfort and any unusual noises or handling issues.
Financing is another key consideration. Many dealers and banks offer attractive installment plans, but it’s crucial to read the fine print. High interest rates or hidden charges can make a seemingly affordable deal far more expensive in the long run. Buyers should compare options and negotiate where possible to secure the best terms.
Stay tuned throughout the year as we steer you towards the best deals, smartest choices and latest news in Bahrain’s motoring industry.

McLaren Look Strong Again In Pre-Season Testing
Twenty-four hours of Formula 1 pre-season testing, over three days in Bahrain, left the impression that McLaren will start the new season as they ended the last – as the team to beat.
Mercedes’ George Russell ended the final day with the fastest time, just 0.021 seconds quicker than Red Bull’s Max Verstappen. And the best lap of the entire test was set by Carlos Sainz, following his switch to Williams from Ferrari to make way for Lewis Hamilton.
But there seemed enough evidence to suggest that McLaren, who last year won their first constructors’ title since 1998, have a definitive advantage. On the afternoon of the second day of testing, McLaren’s Lando Norris did a race-simulation run at the same time as Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc and Mercedes’ Andrea Kimi Antonelli. Kristian Harrison took the all-new Toyota Land Cruiser Prado for a thrilling test drive across Bahrain, pushing its off-road prowess and luxury features to the limit in an unforgettable 4x4 experience.
This new beast from the Japanese marque stays true to its heritage while introducing modern enhancements that make it one of the most compelling SUVs in its class. After an exhilarating test drive through Bahrain’s diverse landscapes, I can confidently say that this is one of the best 4x4 experiences I’ve had in my career.
Power and Performance
The new Land Cruiser Prado offers a 2.4L turbo gasoline engine, delivering 278 horsepower and 430 Nm of torque, paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission, ensuring smooth acceleration and seamless gear shifts on our dusty highways. The addition of Electric Power Steering (EPS) enhances manoeuvrability, making it effortless to handle both on and off-road.
Off-Road Mastery
The Prado truly shines when taken off the beaten path. Bahrain’s shallow dunes, rocky terrain, and coastal stretches provided the perfect backdrop to test its off-road prowess. Toyota’s Multi-Terrain Select (MTS) system, featuring six different drive modes – dirt, mud, sand, deep snow (funnily

On-Road Comfort and Luxury
While its off-road capabilities are unmatched, the Land Cruiser Prado also excels in urban environments. The premium seven-seater interior is both spacious and luxurious, featuring ventilated front seats, a versatile seating configuration and high-quality materials throughout. The 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto integration and a 10-speaker JBL audio system enhance the driving experience, making long journeys more enjoyable. Additionally, the panoramic view monitor and Heads-Up Display (HUD) contribute to greater driving confidence.
Striking Exterior and Safety Features
Toyota has crafted a bold yet functional design for the new Prado, incorporating an aggressive grille, striking LED headlights and a variety of eye-catching colour options, including the unique
two-tone Sand with a light grey roof. The SUV is also equipped with Toyota Safety Sense, which includes a Pre-Collision System, Dynamic Radar Cruise Control, Lane Tracing Assist and Blind Spot Monitoring.
Verdict
The new Toyota Land Cruiser Prado is an SUV that seamlessly blends power, luxury and versatility. Whether tackling the highways, cruising through the city or going off the beaten track into the desert, it delivers an unmatched driving experience. Financial Wellbeing
Understand spending versus savings
Business Consultant Pria Masson shares insights on understanding the dynamics of spending versus saving, highlighting the psychological and emotional factors influencing financial decisions. She explains how recognising personal patterns can lead to guilt-free, mindful financial habits and long-term wellbeing.
Behavioural finance is a fascinating subject that highlights the many cultural, social, psychological and cognitive factors that determine how we interact with money. While knowing your fundamental relationship with money may not change a lot initially, it will allow you to notice your patterns. Eventually, you will figure out why you do what you do and if you want to change it. One of the first things one might notice in patterns in whether they are, at the core, spenders, savers or somewhere in between. To understand this, let’s try and unpack what makes people spend or save in the first place.
Some people find it very difficult to spend money. They hold on to the last penny, hunt up deals and if they can avoid an expense, they will. The joy of money in their bank has a very high weight and so to spend happily, the joy of the purchase must be significantly higher. On the other hand, there are people for whom spending is the joy, and savings could be negligible, or a by-product of a life lived and money spent.
We live in a consumer economy which means early on, so many of us are conditioned to equate success and happiness with the tangible products (houses, cars, clothes) and services (schools, holidays, etc.) that are available. Hence, when we can instantly get access to these, the dopamine centres in our brain possibly light up and we feel like we achieved something. This reinforces a mindset where money becomes both a means to an end and a goal in itself. It motivates us on so many levels and can soothe (and trigger) multiple psychological elements.
At the first level, spending brings instant gratification. The loop from ‘I want’ to ‘It’s mine’ is closed quite swiftly and neatly. For many, it also soothes an emotional need in a manner similar to food. So, having a bad day, here is an easy fix – go buy something and the dopamine will lift your mood for the moment – and it can be a loop.
The loop can be more easily activated when the motivation to spend comes from social pressure to buy the bag everyone has, the shoes etc.
We also have so many cognitive biases and mental shortcuts like anchoring (relying heavily on initial price points) and loss aversion (fear of missing out on deals) that can lead to spending more than intended. While it can be cloaked as many different things, at its root, especially when its frequent and non-essential, spending can soothe a void very efficiently. The problem is, money is a semi-fixed good, which means that in order to get more, you must earn more. Credit card access makes us feel we have more than we do, and those cycles can be very unhealthy.
If it’s obvious that we are better off spending prudently and saving more, why don’t more of us do it? In my view, the most common reason lies in the concept of time value of money which says that ‘money today is worth more than money tomorrow’. What this means is that when we defer an expense today for future financial security, the value of what we gave up can feel far heavier than the relatively intangible future gain. It just makes
British Club 90th Birthday Anniversary
it difficult to convince ourselves of the need and value of that saved amount. If there is financial literacy, the knowledge of what the money can earn over time can bridge the value gap. However, the basic relationship we share with money could be the primary driver of whether the saving process is easy or challenging.
So, this month, think about where you sit on the savings-spending scale and whether you are happy, guilt-free and mindful about your current position. If not, start noticing more and as you break down you smaller habits and see your patterns, you are likely to find yourself more receptive to small changes to make your spendingsaving experience less driven by guilt and regret and more rewarding.

Forging a Fitness Legacy
Osama Kamaluddin, Founder of The Forge CrossFit and Bahrain Throwdown, shares his inspiring journey of introducing CrossFit to the island, overcoming challenges and expanding the fitness community across the Kingdom.
When Osama first discovered CrossFit, it was a revelation. “I had tried bodybuilding and powerlifting since I was 16, but both felt repetitive and lacked innovation,” he recalls. “Then CrossFit came along, a sport that boosts fitness levels in every capacity. I got addicted because the results are quantifiable, you can measure your fitness and watch it improve.”
Bringing CrossFit to Bahrain wasn’t easy. “In the beginning, it was just a few guys doing the sport, not more than 20 for the whole year. But it grew through word of mouth, especially as it gained popularity in the GCC,” Osama says. Establishing The Forge Gym also presented its own hurdles. “The biggest challenge was the lack of support from the federation overseeing the sport. Keeping it accessible with unbeatable rates while covering costs was tough and maintaining a drama-free, positive environment required careful management,” he explains.
Despite these obstacles, Osama remained focused on his mission. “We change lives one person at a time, making them healthier and more confident. Coaching goes beyond the gym, it is about personal growth.”
Over the years, CrossFit’s presence in Bahrain has flourished. “It started as an exercise programme that
people were sceptical about. Now, it dominates the fitness industry, proving its effectiveness with athletes excelling in various sports and securing podium finishes,” he notes.
The recent expansion to Hamad Town marks a significant milestone. “We saw an opportunity in an untapped area and went for it. We quadrupled our member base – it has been one of the best decisions I’ve ever made! It’s not just about business growth; it allowed me to hire more Bahraini coaches, strengthening our community,” Osama states proudly.
So, what sets The Forge apart? According to Osama: “We offer a comprehensive strength and conditioning programme that improves all 10 elements of fitness –from cardiovascular endurance to accuracy. Fitness isn’t just a buzzword here; we have the metrics to measure and improve it.” Experienced coaches guide athletes of all levels in every class, with no extra fees.
The Forge isn’t just a gym; it’s a community. “Group workouts foster social connections. We cheer each other on, push each other and ensure no one walks in without a friendly greeting,” Osama highlights. For newcomers intimidated by CrossFit, he offers heartfelt advice: “I use my children as examples. My eight-year-old daughter and five-year-old son both do CrossFit. If they can do it, what’s stopping you? Nobody starts at the top. Everything is scalable and you work your way up.”
Looking to the future, Osama has ambitious plans. “My goal is to have a branch in every city. My team is experienced and ready to expand, growing the community across Bahrain.”

Abdulla Mahmood, widely known as Whatsmahmood, possesses a profound passion for crafting immersive narratives through music and film. He discusses his artistic evolution, inspirations and future ambitions with Kristian Harrison.
Abdulla’s initial foray into performance began in theatre during his school days. “Shortly after, I saw a Jimi Hendrix video for the first time in 2009. I bought a guitar from a supermarket and learned to play it the same day. I’ve been playing music every day since,” he recalls.
When discussing his influences, Abdulla states: “It’s hard to pinpoint exactly what influenced me – it’s all a melting pot of jazz, blues, rock, funk, disco, soul, punk and indie. However, Michael Jackson and Jimi Hendrix have been substantial influences, not just on my music but on me as an artist.”
A New Direction
Abdulla has recently shifted from traditional music videos to creating short films, a change driven by his desire to offer more substantive content to his audience. “I had a deep philosophical realisation about music videos being too superficial: I’m now focused on giving my audience something with more value, something with a story,” he explains. His first venture into filmmaking was filled with challenges, from learning about editing and colour grading to understanding camera settings and lighting. “I’ve never made a film before; I’ve done music videos shot and edited on iPhones. The entire film was one huge challenge, but luckily, I had a lot of help from my friends,” Abdulla shares.
If you don’t believe you can do it, then you have no chance at all. Believe in yourself and your ideas, and just do it.
Ignore the imaginary audience; creatives worry about what others might think before it’s even started.”
- Abdulla Mahmood
Collaboration and Community Response
Key collaborations have been central to Abdulla’s recent projects. “Filmmaker Moayyed is a brother to me: without him, there is no film. Sean Aaron Fernandes has produced all of my currently published songs. He’s a real gem in Bahrain, a humble man I’m honoured to call a friend” he acknowledges.
The response to his new approach has been overwhelmingly positive. “I’m extremely grateful that we made people laugh from around the region. The feedback has been constant from places like Kuwait, Saudi, Qatar, Egypt and Oman,” Abdulla remarks, pleased with the regional impact of his work.
Looking Ahead
Looking to the future, Abdulla is focused on his next three films, with themes ranging from romance to the poignant issue of ageing. “My future goals in music and film are what you’re seeing right now. I just want to keep doing it and sustain my creative expression financially,” he asserts.
Abdulla also offers advice to aspiring artists: “If you don’t believe you can do it, then you have no chance at all. Believe in yourself and your ideas, and just do it. Ignore the imaginary audience; creatives worry about what others might think before it’s even started,” he concludes.

Pr grammatic dvertising:
Why It’s a Game-Changer
In today’s fast-paced digital world, advertising has come a long way from traditional billboards and TV commercials. Enter programmatic advertising — a revolutionary way of buying and placing ads online. But what does it mean, and why should businesses like yours care about it? Let’s break it down in simple terms.
What Is Programmatic Advertising?
Imagine you want to advertise your product online. Traditionally, you’d approach a website or a media agency, negotiate the ad space and manually set everything up. With programmatic advertising, all of this happens automatically, thanks to advanced technology and algorithms.
In simple terms, programmatic advertising is like a matchmaking service for ads. It connects your ads with the right audience at the right time, using data to make decisions in real time. No more guesswork or wasting money on ads that don’t reach the right people.
Why Is Programmatic Advertising Important?
1. Precision Targeting: Programmatic ads can pinpoint your ideal audience based on factors like age, interests, location and even online behaviour. This ensures your message reaches those most likely to engage with your brand.
2. Real-Time Results: Unlike traditional advertising, programmatic gives you live updates. You can see how your ads are performing and tweak them on the go to improve results.
3. Cost-Efficiency: Because it’s data-driven, programmatic advertising helps you spend your budget wisely. You’re not paying for ads that no one sees or cares about.
4. Scalability: Whether you’re a small business or a large corporation, programmatic ads can scale to meet your needs. It works across multiple platforms, including websites, mobile apps and even connected TVs.
Why You Should Sign Up for Programmatic Ads with Us
Navigating the world of digital advertising can feel overwhelming, but that’s where we come in. Our team of experts is here to simplify the process for you. Here’s what we offer:
Tailored Strategies: We analyse your business needs and craft a customised plan to ensure your ads perform at their best.
Cutting-Edge Technology: We use the latest tools to deliver top-notch results, ensuring your ads reach the right audience.
Full Transparency: You’ll have access to real-time reports to see exactly how your campaigns are doing.
Programmatic advertising is no longer a luxury; it’s a necessity for businesses wanting to stay ahead in the digital age. Let us help you unlock its full potential and watch your brand grow like never before.

Bad Building Management ON HOMES AND APARTMENTS
In his new monthly series for Bahrain This Month, Bill Grieve casts his civic lens on areas of concern, offering an enlightening and engaging perspective on various issues affecting life in the Kingdom.
Many people reside in or own a property in a residential apartment building. Invariably they will participate in a RERA-approved Homeowners Association (HOA), typically appointing and paying a building management company (BMC) to manage the property and maintenance on their behalf.
But woe betide owners trusting the BMC blindly, without diligently monitoring and questioning the ongoing duties, responsibilities and obligations of an appointed BMC, and not constantly observing the company’s performance against its contractual obligations. Worryingly, many BMCs purporting to be ‘professional property managers’ are unscrupulous, incompetent and in some cases even corrupt.
Owners need to be especially alert when the developer is also the head of the homeowner’s association – and the principal to whom the management company reports, to mitigate and prevent repair cost collusion or construction fault cover-ups.
RED FLAGS
of a poor Homeowners Association
They:
• Have little or no direct and regular communication with owners.
• Divert all enquiries from owners to the building management – ‘passing the monkey.’
• Don’t respond appropriately to communications/requests.
• Don’t attend AGM’s/local real estate events/meetings.
• Do nothing to improve the building quality or owners ROI.
• Don’t pay maintenance charges themselves, claiming this as a ‘management perk.’
RED FLAGS
of a poor Building Management Company
They:
• Constantly over-promise and under-deliver.
• Fail to communicate with owners/occupants.
• Don’t address nuisance neighbour complaints (noise, mess, smell, attitude) effectively or at all.
• Do everything on the ‘ultra-cheap’ and constantly state ‘no budget available’ for improvements.
• Cannot produce audited annual accounts to owners.
• Cannot produce proper written/compiled AGM Minutes, reports and data.
• Consistently show ignorance towards smoking, data privacy laws and Civil Defence Regulations.
• Fail to maintain/uphold RERA-approved Building Bylaws.
• Appoint people without the requisite skills and unable to communicate effectively to ‘supervise’ the building.
• Don’t have an accurate up-to-date clearly written and maintained Complaints Register.
• Put profit before principle.
• Fail to collect maintenance charges effectively.
• Are not transparent to owners regarding costs, charges, expenditure, maintenance and failures.
• Favour certain tenants (single ladies, same nationality, friends/family members etc.).
• Constantly defer, digress, deflect, obfuscate and procrastinate.
What owners can do to help remedy these problems:
• Verify the buildings managed by the building manager – this will indicate how thinly the ‘BMC management butter is spread’.
• Fully understand what the BMC is contracted to do – ask for a copy of the contract with the HOA – it’s your right as an owner.
• Copy ALL correspondence to both the HOA and the BMC and follow up regularly.
• Keep a detailed diary of interactions with the HOA and BMC.
• Take photographs and videos regularly, filing them clearly by subject, date and time.
• Report areas of specific concern regarding safety, security and mismanagement to RERA (Scan or click on QR code).

“I want to create a ripple effect, where artists feel empowered to take risks and push their creative boundaries.”
- Seema Haqiqi
Encaustic art, also known as hot wax painting, is an ancient art form with a textured beauty. “I was drawn to this medium because of its rich history and the boundless creative possibilities it offers,” Seema explains. “The vibrancy, texture and depth of encaustic art presented an exciting challenge, compelling me to push artistic boundaries within Bahrain.”
Overcoming Hurdles
Introducing such a rare medium came with its challenges. “It was daunting at first, but I believed in its potential to inspire,” she reflects. Her belief in encaustic art’s ability to captivate audiences kept her motivated, fostering appreciation for its complexity and beauty over time.
Bahrain’s climate posed technical obstacles that spurred Seema’s innovation. Traditional encaustic art relies on beeswax, vulnerable to melting in high temperatures. “I developed a special recipe by blending paraffin wax with other materials to

create a more durable medium,” she shares. “This adaptation ensured my artworks withstood the Gulf’s intense heat and humidity, preserving their integrity through meticulous experimentation.”
Inaugural Exhibition
Seema’s Journey of Wax & Flames collection is deeply rooted in Bahrain’s cultural heritage and natural landscape. “The vibrant colours and fluidity of the sea inspire many of my pieces,” she says, capturing the movement and depth of water through molten wax. Islamic patterns symbolising harmony and continuity intertwine with textures that add layers of meaning, while Arabic calligraphy subtly weaves tradition into contemporary expression.
Hosting Bahrain’s first encaustic exhibition marks a significant milestone. “I hope this inspires emerging artists to explore new mediums and think outside the box,” Seema states. With a goal to challenge perceptions of contemporary art in
the region, she asserts: “I want to create a ripple effect, where artists feel empowered to take risks and push their creative boundaries.”
Reflecting on the exhibition, Seema recalls conversations that moved her deeply. “One young Bahraini artist told me she felt inspired to explore unconventional materials. Moments like these remind me why I started this journey,” she says. Feedback also encouraged her to consider more interactive and large-scale projects, expanding the reach of encaustic art.
With the exhibition now closed, Seema looks ahead. “I’m considering a new collection inspired by the Gulf region’s shared cultural heritage,” she reveals, with aspirations for international showcases. Ultimately, she envisions Bahrain as a hub for encaustic art in the Middle East, fostering awareness and appreciation for this ancient yet timeless medium.
M thers, Celebrating Cherishing
Whether it is through their gentle encouragement, tireless sacrifices or quiet strength in the face of challenges, mothers shape who we are and stand as the backbone of our families. This Mother’s Day, on March 21, we take a moment to honour and celebrate these incredible women who give so much of themselves for the happiness and success of their children.
Motherhood is more than just a title; it is a lifelong commitment to nurturing, teaching and protecting. The influence of a mother extends far beyond childhood, shaping our character, values and outlook on life. Her wisdom becomes our inner voice, guiding us through life’s toughest decisions. Her warmth offers comfort in moments of doubt and her resilience teaches us the strength we need to face the world.
There are few roles in life as profound and irreplaceable as that of a mother. From the moment we take our first breath, our mothers are there, offering love, guidance and unwavering support.
In every culture, the role of a mother is revered and rightly so. Across generations, mothers have carried traditions forward, instilling a sense of belonging and heritage in their children. Their sacrifices often go unnoticed, yet they ask for nothing in return. Whether it is a mother working long hours to provide for her family, a stay-athome mum dedicating every moment to her children’s growth or a grandmother continuing to offer wisdom and care, the essence of motherhood remains unchanged – pure, selfless love.
As we celebrate Mother’s Day, it is important to take the time to truly appreciate the women who have given us so much. While flowers and gifts are wonderful gestures, the most meaningful gift is gratitude.
A heartfelt conversation, a simple ‘thank you’ or spending quality time together can mean the world to a mother.
This special day is also an opportunity to acknowledge the different forms of motherhood, women who have taken on the role of mothers in unconventional ways, whether as guardians, mentors or mother figures who have stepped in with love and care. Every act of nurturing and kindness deserves recognition.
Let this Mother’s Day be a reminder of the immeasurable impact mothers have on our lives. Their love is a force unlike any other, one that deserves to be celebrated, cherished and honoured not just today, but every day.

Subscription boxes are the gifts that keep on giving. Whether your mum loves gourmet snacks, books, gardening goodies or artisanal teas, there’s a box for that. Every month she’ll get a delightful surprise and every time it arrives she’ll think of you.
A Cooking Class (with a Twist)
If your mum enjoys cooking (or even if she just enjoys eating), sign up for an online cooking class together. Choose a cuisine she’s never tried before – Thai, Italian, maybe even a pastry masterclass. It’s a fun way to bond, plus you get to eat the results. Win-win.
A Handwritten Letter
In the age of texts and emojis, a heartfelt handwritten letter is pure gold. Tell her what you
admire about her, share your favourite memories and let her know how much she means to you. It costs nothing but will be treasured forever.
A Plant with Personality
Flowers are lovely, but a plant lasts longer and grows with time, just like your love for Mum. Choose something easy to care for, like a succulent or a peace lily. You could even name the plant together, because why not?
A Day Off
Sometimes the best gift is simply a break. Take over her chores for the day. Make her breakfast in bed, do the dishes, handle the laundry and let her relax while you manage the household. It might not come wrapped in a bow, but it’s guaranteed to be appreciated.
BAHRAINI
Every year on March 8, the world comes together to celebrate International Women’s Day, a global movement recognising the achievements of women across all fields while advocating for gender equality.
It is a day to reflect on the progress made, acknowledge the challenges that remain and honour the trailblazers who have paved the way for a more inclusive society. Women have been at the forefront of social, economic and political advancements, breaking barriers and redefining their roles in society.
In Bahrain, the empowerment of women has been a key priority, with significant strides made in gender equality, thanks to the efforts of Her Royal Highness Princess Sabeeka bint Ibrahim Al Khalifa. As the President of the Supreme Council for Women (SCW), HRH Princess Sabeeka has dedicated her efforts to advancing women’s rights, enhancing their contributions to society and ensuring they have access to equal opportunities. Her vision has played a crucial role in shaping policies that support Bahraini women in education, the workforce and leadership.
A Global Movement for Gender Equality
International Women’s Day is more than just a celebration; it is a call to action for accelerating gender parity. The day is marked by events, discussions and initiatives that highlight the importance of women’s roles in all sectors, from politics and business to science and the arts. While significant progress has been made, challenges such as the gender pay gap, underrepresentation in leadership positions and barriers to education remain prevalent in many parts of the world.
The theme of International Women’s Day changes each year, focusing on different aspects of gender equality and women’s empowerment. It serves as a reminder that the fight for women’s rights is ongoing and that every step forward is a victory for future generations. Across the globe, governments, organisations and individuals use this occasion to reflect on the contributions of women and explore ways to create a more inclusive and equitable society.
Bahrain’s Commitment to Women’s Empowerment
Bahrain has long recognised the importance of empowering women, implementing policies and reforms to ensure their full participation in national development. The Kingdom has made remarkable progress in increasing female representation in government, business and education, demonstrating its commitment to gender equality.
A key figure in this progress is HRH Princess Sabeeka, whose leadership and advocacy have transformed the opportunities for Bahraini women. Through the Supreme Council for Women, she has championed initiatives that promote women’s rights, create economic opportunities and enhance social support systems. Her vision has helped shape a society where women are not only active participants but also leaders in their respective fields.
HRH Princess Sabeeka’s Contributions to Women’s Advancement
HRH Princess Sabeeka has played a vital role in establishing policies that promote gender balance and women’s inclusion in decisionmaking positions. One of her major achievements is the National Plan for the Advancement of Bahraini Women, a comprehensive strategy aimed at integrating women into all aspects of national development. This plan has led to legislative reforms ensuring equal opportunities in employment, education and entrepreneurship. Under her leadership, Bahrain has seen an increase in female participation in politics and government. Bahraini women have taken on ministerial roles, seats in parliament and leadership positions within the private sector. HRH Princess Sabeeka has been instrumental in pushing for policies that support working women, including family-friendly workplace initiatives, flexible work arrangements and enhanced maternity rights.
Economic empowerment has also been a key focus of her efforts. Through various initiatives, including financial assistance programmes and business training workshops, Bahraini women have been encouraged to enter the workforce and establish their own businesses. The Bahraini Women Development Centre provides training and resources to help women gain financial independence and entrepreneurial skills, ensuring they have the tools to succeed in the modern economy.
Promoting Women’s Rights Beyond Bahrain
HRH Princess Sabeeka’s influence extends beyond Bahrain, as she continues to advocate for gender equality on regional and international platforms. She has represented Bahrain in global forums, highlighting the importance of women’s contributions to economic and social development. Her work has earned her recognition as a leading figure in women’s rights advocacy, inspiring change
not only in Bahrain but across the Arab world. Her humanitarian efforts have also been commendable, focusing on initiatives that support underprivileged women and families. Through partnerships with international organisations, she has worked to improve the lives of women in disadvantaged communities, ensuring they have access to education, healthcare and economic opportunities.
Looking Towards the Future
As Bahrain joins the rest of the world in celebrating International Women’s Day, it is important to acknowledge the progress that has been made while recognising the work that still needs to be done. Women continue to face challenges, and it is through strong leadership, policy reforms and societal support that true gender equality can be achieved.
HRH Princess Sabeeka’s efforts have laid a strong foundation for the continued advancement of Bahraini women. Her dedication to gender equality serves as an inspiration, proving that with the right policies and support systems, women can thrive in any field they choose. Her work is a testament to Bahrain’s commitment to empowering women and ensuring they have the opportunities they deserve. International Women’s Day is not just about celebrating achievements but also about inspiring future generations to strive for a more inclusive and equal world. It is a day to appreciate the contributions of women, to amplify their voices and to continue working towards a society where every woman has the opportunity to reach her full potential.
As we reflect on the significance of this day, let us honour the achievements of women worldwide, including the remarkable contributions of HRH Princess Sabeeka. Her vision and leadership have paved the way for a brighter future for Bahraini women, ensuring they play an integral role in shaping the nation’s progress. Through continued advocacy, support and determination, the journey towards true gender equality will continue, bringing us closer to a world where every woman is empowered to succeed.
Leading with Innovation
Nadezhda Vasichkina, the new Director of Sales at the Diplomat Radisson Blu Hotel, Residence & Spa, brings a dynamic approach to the role, drawing on extensive global experience in hospitality.
With nearly two decades in the hospitality industry, Ms. Vasichkina’s career has taken her from Moscow to Bangkok, Amsterdam, Istanbul, the UAE and Qatar before leading her to Bahrain. “This incredible career path has allowed me to grow both personally and professionally, travel to numerous countries and collaborate with inspiring colleagues who have become lifelong friends,” she says.
Since arriving at the property, Ms. Vasichkina has been struck by the warmth and professionalism of the team. “This is one of the best teams I have ever worked with. From the moment I arrived in Bahrain, they amazed me with their genuine hospitality and attention to detail. “When my family arrived late at night, we found a well-stocked fridge, including traditional Russian porridge for my daughter, as well as a detailed onboarding plan.”
As Director of Sales, Ms. Vasichkina’s primary focus is strengthening the hotel’s reputation as a leading choice for government entities, embassies and international business events. She also sees great potential in expanding the hotel’s reach in the Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and Exhibitions (MICE) sector, capitalising on Bahrain’s increasing prominence as a business and leisure destination.
Ms. Vasichkina is particularly excited about positioning the hotel to attract new international markets. “Bahrain has seen a rise in visitors from Europe, China, Russia and CIS countries,” she explains. We are introducing a new guest service – complimentary transfers to beaches and exclusive discounted access – ensuring our guests experience the best of what Bahrain has to offer.”
- Nadezhda Vasichkina
A strong advocate for diversification, Ms. Vasichkina believes the hospitality sector must be proactive in managing risks. “Success in this dynamic environment demands diversification, continuous industry monitoring and swift decision-making.”
The hospitality industry has faced numerous challenges in recent years, from global crises to changing workforce expectations. Ms. Vasichkina believes addressing these issues requires both adaptability and a commitment to talent development. “One of the biggest challenges today is the shortage of young talent entering hospitality. To inspire the next generation, we must create opportunities that align with their evolving expectations.” She has worked closely with hospitality students in previous roles and continues to mentor young professionals.
Looking to the future, Ms. Vasichkina is eager to integrate emerging hospitality trends into the hotel’s strategy. “Bleisure travel – where business travellers extend their trips for leisure – is a key opportunity. We are also closely monitoring the rise of e-sports tourism, an industry that is growing rapidly.”
Her enthusiasm for hospitality remains undiminished. “What I love most about this industry is the people. Every day, I meet and work with individuals from all over the world, each with different backgrounds, professions and personalities. It is truly inspiring.
“That is why I fell in love with this industry from day one – and I know I always will love it. People often ask me: ‘Where would you work if not in hospitality?’ My answer is simple: nowhere but hospitality.”
Championing Creative Entrepreneurship
As the founder of the Creative Business Network (CBN), Rasmus Wiinstedt Tscherning has spent over a decade nurturing creative entrepreneurs worldwide. During his visit to Bahrain for the Global Women’s Economic Forum, shared his creative insight with Woman This Month.
CBN was founded with a clear objective: to support creative startups in turning their ideas into sustainable businesses. What began as a Danish competition in 2010 soon grew into a global network operating in over 80 countries.
“We try to bring creative solutions to life or to the world,” says Mr. Tscherning. “We’re not in the business because we think we need more hats, gloves and shoes – but because we need more sustainable fashion, life-saving devices or whatever creatives can come up with.”
One of CBN’s standout initiatives is the Creative Business Cup, a global startup competition that has seen strong participation from Bahrain. “Bahrain actually came second last year, which shows the strength of its creative entrepreneurs,” he notes.
Bahrain as a Creative Hub
Mr. Tscherning sees great potential in Bahrain as a regional centre for creativity and innovation. He has been in discussions with key stakeholders about hosting the Creative Business Cup global finals in Bahrain in 2026. “If we could get the right people together, Bahrain could be the host,” he states.
“But it requires commitment – venue, funding, hotels for speakers and organisation. It needs to come from here.”
With Bahrain’s increasing focus on SMEs and startups, he believes this could be a defining moment for the country’s creative sector.
“The economic future of Bahrain is in small businesses. There is a huge opportunity for creative entrepreneurs here.”
Empowering Women in Business
His visit to Bahrain coincided with the Global Women’s Economic Forum, where he highlighted the importance of female entrepreneurship. “Women’s empowerment makes a lot of sense, simply from a market perspective – it creates jobs and growth,” he explains. “The reason why many Scandinavian countries are wealthy is because the whole workforce was working. Having a fully active workforce benefits the economy.”
He believes Bahrain is already making strides in this area. “Women here are doing it for themselves. They just need more platforms to showcase their work.”
Mentorship and Market Access
While funding is crucial, Mr. Tscherning stresses the value of knowledge-sharing and mentorship. “Startups often think they need an investor, but what they actually need is knowledge,” he explains. “If they can bootstrap or get public funding, they might not even need external investment.”
CBN facilitates mentorship through programmes such as Foreign Mentor Weekends, where international experts provide intensive support to local startups. “Imagine 10–15 mentors coming to Bahrain for a weekend to help 20–30 startups refine their pitch and market strategies,” he suggests.
An Expanding Future
Mr. Tscherning is already thinking about the future of CBN and his own role. “Everyone has their time. My time as CEO may be coming to an end in the next few years,” he admits. “I’ve written myself into a corner with logistics and management – I’d much rather focus on the creative side.”
However, his commitment to Bahrain remains strong. “This is a unique market, and if the momentum continues, Bahrain could be at the forefront of the creative industries in the region.”
Ramadan: Finding Joy in the Chaos of Motherhood
The Holy Month of Ramadan is one of the most amazing times of the year, but it can also be extremely stressful for parents. Ouiam El Hassani offers advice on managing both your children and yourselves during what can be a testing time.
Ramadan in Bahrain is a whirlwind of samboosas, sleepless nights and surprisingly spiritual toddlers. Forget the Pinterest-perfect Ramadan decorations; mine are currently held together with prayer beads and hope. This holy month isn’t just about abstaining from food and drink; it’s about abstaining from losing your ever-loving mind while simultaneously trying to raise tiny humans who seem to have developed a superhuman ability to locate the one forbidden snack in the pantry. Consider this your survival guide, fellow mums!
Ramadan Rituals
Let’s be real, mums in Bahrain during Ramadan are basically superheroes. We’re juggling Iftars that could feed a small army (because, you know, unexpected guests are a thing), Suhoors that need to be ready at 4am (even though we’re running on, like, two hours of sleep), and the general chaos of family life, all while fasting. It’s like a marathon, except instead of a medal at the end, you get a mountain of dishes and the faint scent of fried onions clinging to your clothes for the next week. Glamorous, right? Pro tip: Embrace the chaos. Lower your expectations. If the kids eat cereal for Iftar one night, so be it.
Then there are the kids. Oh, the kids. Suddenly, they’re experts on Islamic history, quizzing you on the Prophet’s life while simultaneously demanding a juice box right now. Bedtime becomes a mythical creature, whispered about in hushed tones, never actually seen. And don’t even get me started on the “I’m hungry!” chorus that starts approximately 30 seconds after Iftar ends. It’s
like they have a secret pact with their stomachs to rebel against all forms of parental authority. How to survive this? Engage them! Get them involved in preparing simple dishes for Iftar. Think fruit skewers or helping to set the table. This keeps them occupied and makes them feel part of the festivities. Also, strategically assign screen time. A little Paw Patrol before Iftar can work wonders.

Creating Lasting Memories
But amidst the chaos, there’s magic. There’s the shared joy of breaking the fast together, the laughter echoing around the table, and the feeling of community during Taraweeh prayers (even if your youngest is using the prayer mat as a magic carpet). There are the sweet moments when your child surprises you with a thoughtful question about Ramadan or when they try to fast for a few hours (and then promptly demand a double helping of machboos). Want to cultivate these moments? Talk to your kids about Ramadan in age-appropriate ways. Explain why we fast, and focus on the positive aspects like sharing and kindness. Make it fun! Create a simple Ramadan calendar with stickers or small treats.
And let’s not forget the Ghabgas! These nightly gatherings are a feast for the senses and a fantastic opportunity to catch up with friends and family. It’s also a chance for the kids to run wild and burn off some energy, which, let’s face it, is a win for everyone. Just try to keep an eye on them; those little ones can disappear faster than a plate of luqaimat. Ghabga survival tip: bring a small bag of toys or books to keep the kids entertained. And if all else fails, bribe them with the promise of dessert.
Ramadan in Bahrain is a beautiful, chaotic, exhausting and ultimately rewarding experience. It’s a time for reflection, for connection and for reminding ourselves that even amidst the madness, there’s so much love and joy to be found. So, to all the mums out there navigating this Holy Month: you’re amazing. You’re strong. You’re probably running on caffeine and sheer willpower. But you’re also creating memories that will last a lifetime. And that, my friends, is something truly special. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I hear a small voice demanding more Vimto. Wish me luck! And may your Ramadan be filled with more laughter than tears (though, let’s be honest, there will probably be some of both). Good luck!

How To Dress Stylish in 2025 As A Busy Mum! 3 Fashion Tips That Work
Every Time!
It’s been said that dressing up can boost a person’s confidence and overall mood. But being stylish is not always an easy achievement for a busy mum. From running errands, to attending school events or work, and everything else in between, it can feel like there is no time to focus on appearance. I mean, who has time to prioritise personal style when you already wear so many hats?
If your daily responsibilities have gotten in the way of you looking and feeling your best, you don’t need to sacrifice your appearance any longer! You can be a stylish mum every single day and here are three tips to help you accomplish that;
Invest in quality basics that are practical and fashionable. Choose versatile pieces that can be dressed up like a classic blazer, a tailored pair of trousers or a flattering wrap dress. Pay attention to fabric here as you want to look great but also stay comfortable. Opt for fabrics that are easy to care for and breathable, like wrinkle-free cotton blends or linen. Fast yet fashionable is the name of the game here, so stay away from pieces with too many zippers or buttons.
Accessorise with statement pieces. Accessories are an easy way to take your outfit from average to glam while adding your own unique style to the look. Invest in stand-out pieces that elevate even the simplest of outfits such as a quality leather purse, a designer scarf or a stunning pair of sunglasses. Go for practical accessories like a cross-body bag that allows you to keep your hands free or a pair of comfortable yet fashionable loafers that make walking through those grocery aisles a breeze.
Never forget that being a mum is an incredible accomplishment and you deserve to feel confident and stylish every day. Don’t let the duties of mum life keep you from feeling your best! If you follow these tips, you’ll be on your way to effortless, fashion worthy style that is easy to maintain in your busy life. So get out there! Keep doing the work! But look amazing while doing it!
Adopting a simple self-care routine is the key to looking refreshed after those many sleepless nights of motherhood. In the morning, opt for simple makeup. Forget the contouring and false lashes. You only need a quality concealer, a bold red lip and a brown mascara to always look naturally put together. Try to eat healthy, exercise often and drink plenty of water. And always remember to put on a smile! A happy mum is a gorgeous mum!

Your Monthly Guide to Salon and Spa Success
Instead of Trying Hard to Make Money, First Understand Why You’re Not Making It
Many salon owners focus on making more money, but first, they must understand why their salon isn’t profitable. A busy salon doesn’t always mean a successful one. If you’re working hard but not seeing results, here’s why:
Every month, we invite readers to pose their own questions for Badia to answer in her next column. Make sure to ask your own by emailing ask@womanthismonth.com
1. Lack of Consultation
A proper consultation is crucial for every service. Without it, staff cannot identify client needs or recommend upgrades, leading to unsatisfied clients, complaints and lost income. A weak consultation process often stems from a lack of staff knowledge.
Solution:
• Train staff to ask the right questions before starting a service.
• Use consultation forms for better client understanding.
• Regularly assess staff expertise and update their skills.
• Teach staff to upsell services and retail products.
2. No Clear Standards or Protocols
Many salons lack set rules for services, staff performance and customer experience. This inconsistency causes client dissatisfaction and lost business.
Solution:
• Establish clear protocols for all services.
• Empower managers to enforce salon rules.
• Ensure all staff maintain the same service quality.
3. Not Using KPI Tools
Tracking only daily sales doesn’t reveal a salon’s real health. Without monitoring key performance indicators (KPIs), owners miss growth opportunities.
Solution:
Start tracking these vital numbers:
• Average client spending
• Client return rate
• Retail sales percentage
4. No Real Business Standards
Focusing solely on daily operations without building a strong structure results in weak management, unmotivated teams and financial struggles.
Solution:
• Set clear goals and measure progress.
• Train staff regularly to enhance skills and service quality.
• Ensure managers are well-trained to lead effectively.
Your First Client is Your Staff
Salon success depends on staff motivation, training and leadership. If your team isn’t properly equipped, your business won’t reach its full potential. Fixing internal issues first will lay the foundation for long-term success.
Staff leave because of poor leadership, lack of growth or feeling unimportant. Focus on building a strong, supportive culture, offering growth opportunities and paying attention to work-life balance. When they feel cared for and invested in, they’re more likely to stay.
Create a simple checklist to cover important areas like service, atmosphere, protocol, teamwork, professionalism and all that matter to you. Use a mystery client to assess your salon and get honest feedback. Meet your team on a weekly basis and hold monthly reviews.
1. Why do staff leave and change salons?
2. How do I know if
