TEEING OFF FOR CHARITY

This year, the AMH Island Classic Annual Charity Golf Tournament will be celebrating its 25th year, with the latest edition scheduled to take place on November 14, 15 and 16 November at His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa’s Private Golf Course in Saffriya.

Flashback: In 1997, when His Majesty King Hamad, then Crown Prince, was meeting the organisers of the 1st Island Classic Golf Tournament. Seen, from left to right, are Dr Paul Armerding, then CMO of AMH, with Michael Langton and Salman Abbasi.

“We thank our kind patron, His Majesty King Hamad, whose continuous support and generosity enabled us to reach this silver jubilee milestone,” says Dr George Cheriyan, AMH Corporate CEO and Chief Medical Officer.

Now an important fixture in Bahrain’s sporting calendar, the golf tournament first started in 1997 as a fundraiser when the American Mission Hospital’s work and growth necessitated the construction of a new building in Manama, requiring the purchase of advanced medical and surgical equipment.

As a not-for-profit healthcare establishment serving Bahrain since 1902, the hospital has no investors or shareholders who put in capital or who seek dividends from its operations. Hence, there is a need for support not only for the hospital’s infrastructure upgrades but also, especially, for its numerous community-outreach programmes.

Col. Khalifa Al Fadala tees off in 1999.

“Over 200 community outreach projects were conducted in 2023 and 2024 alone, which included free health check-ups, medical camps, health awareness talks, fee-waivers, some full and some partial for the poor,” says Dr. Cheriyan.

“We also offer free consultancies and partially-paid treatments to assist the less-privileged members of the society, who are in need of financial support. We have set up the Zwemer Clinic in Manama to help such patients who cannot pay huge consultancy fees,” he added.

The first charity golf event, in 1997, was organised by AMH in association with the American Association of Bahrain. Within three years, it had helped in the construction of a new building

and also of an overhead bridge across a busy Isa al Kabeer Road in Manama. It enabled the connecting of two hospital buildings on either sides of the road.

Tournaments like these help sustain the operations of the hospital without burdening the patients with high bills. The Island Classic tournament is played under the Florida scramble format. There are two flights, Championship and Premiership, which allows various skill levels of golfers to participate.

A BLEND OF LUXURY, INNOVATION & SUSTAINABILITY

With its rich heritage and long-standing reputation for excellence, The Diplomat Radisson Blu Hotel, Residence & Spa is a renowned leader in Bahrain’s thriving hospitality sector. General Manager Petr Dubsky is the driving force behind its continued success and in this exclusive interview with Bahrain This Month, sheds light on the hotel’s commitment to personalised service, innovation and sustainability.

In Bahrain’s highly competitive market, maintaining a luxury hotel’s reputation is no small feat. Yet, The Diplomat Radisson Blu Hotel, Residence & Spa continues to stand out by staying true to its core values while embracing change. According to Mr. Dubsky, the hotel focuses on three essential areas: personalised service, innovation and continuous improvement.

“We prioritise personalised service, ensuring that every guest feels valued and has an exceptional experience tailored to their preferences,” he explains. “Whether it’s recognising repeat guests, anticipating their needs or offering curated experiences, we go the extra mile to make each stay memorable.”

Innovation is another key pillar for the hotel’s success. Recent upgrades include renovated residential apartments, an expanded hotel entrance and a revamped health club. One of the most exciting developments is the upcoming launch of the SOL Lounge, a chic, poolside venue with a fresh and innovative menu concept.

“Lastly, we are committed to continuous improvement through guest feedback. We actively listen to our guests, analyse their feedback and take swift action to address any areas where we can improve. By combining luxury with a personal touch and staying adaptive to trends, we ensure that our guests receive the best in comfort and service, keeping us a step ahead in the market,” Mr. Dubsky adds.

Sustainability at the Core

Sustainability is a growing priority in the global hospitality industry, and the hotel is no exception, having embraced eco-friendly practices across its daily operations, aligning with Radisson Hotel Group’s ‘Responsible Business’ initiative.

“Sustainability is at the core of our operations,” Mr. Dubsky affirms. “The hotel

has introduced a range of measures, from using energy-efficient LED lighting and smart energy management systems to installing water-saving devices. In addition, the hotel actively reduces waste, minimising single-use plastics and encouraging recycling. Guests are also invited to participate in eco-friendly practices during their stay, such as reusing towels and linens.

A Diverse Dining Experience

The hotel offers an extensive range of dining options, with four distinct outlets. These include the international buffet at Olivos, the authentic Italian cuisine at Mondo, Taste of Italy, and the Southeast Asian flavours at Bo.Sabi, while Fiddlers Green Irish Pub provides a lively atmosphere with hearty pub fare.

Wellness and Business Travel

The Diplomat Spa offers a tranquil escape, blending traditional wellness practices with modern approaches. The spa exclusively uses organic and natural products from Sri Lanka, with treatments designed to rejuvenate

both body and mind.

For business travellers, the hotel offers a seamless blend of comfort, convenience and efficiency. Its strategic location in Bahrain’s diplomatic district, along with state-of-the-art meeting rooms and residential apartments, makes it an ideal choice for corporate guests. “What truly sets us apart is our commitment to personalised service, ensuring our business travellers have everything they need for a productive and comfortable stay,” Mr. Dubsky explains.

Event Hospitality at Its Best

As one of Bahrain’s premier venues for events, the hotel offers tailored hospitality packages to suit a variety of needs, from corporate conferences to weddings. The hotel’s state-of-the-art facilities and experienced team ensure that every event is seamless and memorable. “We can cater to a diverse clientele, from large international conferences to intimate celebrations, with flexibility and attention to detail,” Mr. Dubsky highlights.

BLENDING COFFEE AND CULTURE

Arte de Café is more than a coffee shop – it’s a creative space where art, family and community come together. Founded by Khalid Shukri, the café blends the richness of European coffee culture with Bahrain’s artistic spirit, offering a cosy haven for people to relax, socialise and immerse themselves in art.

The journey of Arte de Café began when the visionary Mr. Shukri came up with a new concept. Inspired by UV artists he met during his travels around the world, he wanted to build something special. “I’ve always been an entrepreneur since I finished school,” he says. “Furthermore, art has been around me since childhood. My father was, and still is, a professional photographer.” This early exposure to art laid the foundation for his dream of creating a space that celebrated artistic expression.

The café’s vision wasn’t just about displaying art – it was about creating a place where people could engage with both art and each other. “I wanted to bring creative people together and build a community that values art,” Mr. Shukri explains. “After seeing that the majority of people liked and appreciated my work, it really influenced me.”

Arte de Café offers more than just art; it serves an innovative menu featuring infused flavoured coffee – a concept new to the region. “The menu is only at 20 percent right now, but we are gradually expanding it,” says Mr. Shukri. Along with coffee, visitors can enjoy herbal teas, fruity bubble teas, premium matcha and snacks like croissants, cakes, cookies and salads. The café’s menu, like its vision, is always growing.

Mr. Shukri’s journey into the coffee industry was sparked by curiosity. After asking: “Where was espresso made?”’ he was led to Italy, where he discovered the Espresso Academy in Florence. There, he learned the intricacies of coffee, from green bean selection and cupping to brewing and latte art. “After visiting Florence, I learned a lot about coffee, both in and out of the course. I learned how it’s part of their culture and how much they value it,” he recalls. His aim was to bring a European, specifically Italian, coffee experience to Bahrain, inspired by his travels across Asia, Europe and Africa.

Arte de Café is a family effort. Mr. Shukri’s father, a professional photographer, helps capture the essence of the café’s art, while his sister, a graphic designer, crafted the café’s branding and visuals. His younger sister, passionate about art, adds her own creative touch to the space, and his younger brother, a flight attendant, brings back inspiration from his global travels. Their mother, an exceptional chef, rounds out the family’s contributions with her culinary expertise. “Arte doesn’t feel like a business,” he says. “It feels like home.”

The café’s goal is to offer a ‘third place,’ where visitors can relax, socialise and connect with like-minded people. Mr. Shukri reflects on how coffee plays a universal role in bringing people together. “‘It all started when I realised how coffee brings people together, no matter where they are or where they come from. No matter how rich or poor, everyone finds time to get together for a cup of coffee.”

Indeed, Arte de Café is more than just a coffee shop – it’s a journey through art, family, and the pursuit of something meaningful. Looking ahead, Mr. Shukri hopes to spend more time with his family and expand Arte globally, spreading the love of art and coffee across the world. scan to watch the video

Beats of Success Beats of Success Beats of Success

DJ Akki Antony Abraham, more commonly known as DJ Akki, has established himself as a key figure in Bahrain’s growing music scene. In an exclusive chat with Kristian Harrison, DJ Akki shares how his love for music started at a young age and developed into a thriving career that has taken him from India to Bahrain, all while balancing a full-time job in the shipping industry.

DJ Akki’s journey into music actually began with a passion for playing drums during his teenage years, but it wasn’t long before DJing captured his imagination. “I started DJing at the age of 16,” he recalls. “I had my first gig at a premium club in Kochi, India. It was a memorable one; they almost didn’t let me in because I was too young, but they gave me a chance! In fact, DJing became a great way to get myself invited to places I normally couldn’t go to!”

Driven by an ambition to constantly improve, DJ Akki threw himself into learning the ropes, attending DJ classes in his native Kochi and making connections with seasoned professionals in the industry. His hands-on learning approach and thirst for knowledge led him to work alongside some of India’s top DJs, and he’s never stopped evolving. “Every month, new music comes out, new equipment gets introduced, and we have to study it all on YouTube or from other professionals,” DJ Akki explains. He credits this continuous learning with keeping his skills sharp and relevant in an ever-changing industry.

After establishing a name for himself in India, DJ Akki’s career took him to Bahrain, where he continues to thrive. “I moved to Bahrain after spending some time in Canada, where I also performed,” he says, adding that he has played at some of the most popular venues in Bahrain, including Black Angus Seef and Liv. In addition to his DJ gigs, DJ Akki balances a full-time job in the shipping industry. While some might find this juggling act challenging, he enjoys it. “It’s actually a great balance. I have two incomes and the chance to meet new people and be creative,” he says. DJ Akki is a regular performer at Bollywood Beats at the Juffair Grand Hotel, playing most Thursdays and Fridays, and he appreciates the flexibility this allows him. “We have a WhatsApp group, and if I’m available, I’ll join in. It’s a fun way to stay involved.”

DJ Akki’s love for music is rooted in his versatility as a performer. “I consider myself an open-format DJ,” he explains. “Whether it’s Bollywood, techno or house music, I can adjust my set to the crowd’s preferences.” His adaptability has meant that over the

years, he has also worked on media shows in India, providing background scores for celebrity shows and interactive events. One of his favourite gigs was working with one of India’s best stunt riding teams, Ghost Ryderz, travelling all around the country with them for four years.

Looking ahead, DJ Akki has ambitious plans for the future. He hopes to focus more on techno music, his favourite, and to refine his craft in that specific genre. “There’s a lot of potential for growth in Bahrain,” he says, adding that the country’s expanding entertainment industry could benefit from more music festivals and large-scale events. “We’ve had big acts come through Bahrain, and I think there’s a great space for even more festivals, like the ones happening in Saudi Arabia,” he says. As for his ultimate dream? “My biggest ambition is to attend or even perform at Tomorrowland or Ultra Music Festival,” he says, smiling.

Constitution Day & National Day of Nepal

On the occasion of the Constitution Day and National Day of Nepal, Nepalese Ambassador, HE Tirtha Raj Wagle and Bimala Dhakal Wagle held a reception at The Diplomat Radisson Blu Hotel, Residence & Spa.

CHRISTIAN CEMETERY CAMPAIGN

A recent reception was held to raise funds for the construction of a third Christian cemetery in Bahrain, marking a pivotal moment in the ongoing efforts to address the need for more burial space for the Christian community. The event, hosted by the Christian Community Cemeteries Committee (CCCC) under the chairmanship of the British Ambassador, HE Alastair Long, took place in the peaceful surroundings of the original Christian cemetery in Manama. The first of its kind in Bahrain, this cemetery dates back to 1901 and has since been surrounded by the development of the bustling city.

The need for a new cemetery has grown more pressing in recent years. Bahrain’s second Christian cemetery, located in Salmabad, is quickly nearing full capacity, with only a few months left before all remaining plots are utilised. With approximately 40 Christian burials each year – many of them for expatriates who cannot afford the expense of repatriation – the construction of a third cemetery has become a critical task for the CCCC.

The first phase of this new cemetery project has already been completed, thanks to the efforts of dedicated volunteers, churches and generous donors. This phase included the preparation of the site and raising the ground level by two metres to match the surrounding roads, an essential step given the landscape. The land for the cemetery was generously donated.

John Luckie-Downe, head of the Cemetery Working Group, a task force established by the CCCC, explained the historical context and importance of this project. “The first Christian cemetery opened in 1901 outside of Manama, and the second in Salmabad has been in use for many years. However, time is running out, and without the funds to complete the third cemetery, we will face a critical shortage of space for Christian burials,” he said.

Mr. Luckie-Downe also emphasised the social significance of the project, stating that it serves as a vital piece of social infrastructure for families experiencing traumatic loss, particularly for those who cannot afford the expense of returning their loved ones to their home countries for burial. “Many of the burials are for lowerincome families, and sadly, a number are for infants. The new cemetery will offer a place of dignity and peace for all Christians, regardless of their denomination or level of religious practice,” he added.

The second phase of the project, the construction of a boundary wall, is set to begin soon, with sufficient funds already raised. This phase is expected to be completed by the end of 2024. However, fundraising efforts are ongoing for the third phase, which will involve the construction of essential facilities, including a guardhouse, WC block, storage area and pathways, along with security features like CCTV. The target amount for this phase is BD59,800, to be raised by the end of 2025.

“This is a work of charity for the common good, and the construction of the new cemetery will provide support to expatriates who cannot afford to return home for burial. It is a truly ecumenical project that benefits the entire community.”

Looking ahead, the CCCC has ambitious plans to enhance the new cemetery even further. Plans are in place for the construction of a chapel by 2026, providing a space for final prayers and remembrance. In addition, a modern, low-emission crematorium is also under consideration, which would serve a wider faith community in Bahrain, further cementing the cemetery’s role as an essential piece of social infrastructure.

The History of Pearling in Bahrain

A GLIMPSE INTO AN ANCIENT LEGACY

For centuries, Bahrain was the epicentre of the world’s pearling industry, producing some of the most prized pearls ever discovered. From ancient times to the modern day, the story of pearling is woven into the fabric of Bahraini society, economy and culture. Edwin D’Souza traces the history of pearling in Bahrain, from its early beginnings and golden age to its eventual decline with the rise of cultured pearls and oil. Despite the industry’s end, Bahrain’s pearling legacy remains a cherished part of its identity.

For centuries, the waters surrounding Bahrain were famed for producing some of the finest natural pearls in the world. The history of pearling in Bahrain is not only a testament to the country’s natural wealth but also an essential part of its cultural heritage, influencing its economy, society and even its global identity.

Pearling in Bahrain dates back thousands of years. Archaeological evidence suggests that pearl diving was practiced as early as 2000BC, making it one of the oldest known industries in the region. The abundance of oysters in the shallow waters of the Arabian Gulf made it an ideal location for pearling, and Bahrain’s geographic position helped it become a centre for this lucrative trade.

Historically, Bahrain’s pearls were highly priced for their purity, lustre and rarity. These natural treasures were sought after by royalty and elites across ancient civilisations, from Mesopotamia to the Indian subcontinent and the Mediterranean. The island’s name itself,

Bahrain, is derived from the Arabic word bahr , meaning ‘sea,’ reflecting its intimate relationship with the surrounding waters and the pearling industry that flourished within them.

With the rise of Islam in the 7th century, Bahrain continued to thrive as a pearling centre. The region’s pearls were celebrated in Islamic culture, where pearls were not only symbols of wealth but also spiritual purity and divine beauty. Pearls are mentioned in the Quran, which further elevated their cultural significance.

By the 9th and 10th centuries, Bahrain’s pearling industry was fully integrated into the larger Arabian Gulf economy. Traders from Bahrain exported pearls to markets as far away as India, Persia, and Europe. The city of Basra in present-day Iraq became a major centre for pearling trade during this period, and Bahrain’s pearls were often exported through this vital trade hub.

Pearling remained an important part of Bahrain’s economy throughout the Islamic Golden Age, particularly under the rule of the Abbasid Caliphate, which saw flourishing trade across the Middle East and beyond. While Bahrain had other economic activities like agriculture and fishing, it was the pearls that formed the backbone of its wealth and international prestige.

The pearling industry was organised into a structured, hierarchical system. At the top were the tawash, or pearl merchants, who financed expeditions and traded pearls. They were wealthy and influential members of society, often playing a key role in the local economy. The merchants would sell pearls both locally and internationally, acting as the link between the divers and the broader global market.

The divers, known as ghawwas, formed the backbone of the industry. Their work was perilous, physically demanding, and required immense skill. Equipped with minimal gear,

including nose clips made from tortoiseshell and finger protectors, these divers would plunge into the depths of the sea, sometimes up to 30 metres, to retrieve oysters from the seabed. They faced numerous dangers, from drowning to encountering dangerous sea creatures, yet they were crucial to the success of the industry. Divers often came from lower socio-economic backgrounds, and despite their critical role, they earned modest wages compared to the merchants.

In addition to the divers, each pearling vessel, or sambuk, had a captain known as a nakhuda, as well as a crew that assisted with the ship’s operation. The nakhuda played an important role in managing the diving expeditions, navigating the seas and ensuring that the operations ran smoothly. Pearling trips, known as ghous, typically lasted for several months during the pearling season, from June to September, when the waters were calm, and weather conditions were favourable.

The 19th and early 20th centuries are often referred to as the Golden Age of Bahrain’s pearling industry. During this period, Bahrain was one of the world’s leading producers of natural pearls. The British, who had established a protectorate over Bahrain in the early 19th century, helped Bahrain gain access to new markets in Europe and India, further boosting the industry’s prominence.

Pearling was the dominant economic activity in Bahrain, employing a significant portion of the population. Entire towns and villages along the coast were sustained by the pearling industry, and the fortunes of many Bahraini families were built upon the trade. The wealth generated by pearling brought not only prosperity to Bahrain but also a rich cultural heritage, reflected in the art, music and traditions of the island.

INTERESTING FACT

By law, in the Kingdom of Bahrain, you can only sell natural pearls. The importing of cultured pearls is not permitted.

In the early 20th century, European jewellers like Cartier and Van Cleef & Arpels became major clients of Bahraini pearls, recognising their exceptional quality. These global connections elevated Bahrain’s status as a pearl producer, and its pearls adorned the crowns and jewels of royalty across the world.

Despite its longstanding success, Bahrain’s pearling industry began to decline in the early 20th century, largely due to two major factors: the introduction of cultured pearls and the discovery of oil.

In the 1920s, Japanese entrepreneur Mikimoto Kōkichi perfected the technique of cultivating pearls in oyster farms, producing pearls that were more affordable and readily available than natural pearls. This revolutionised the global pearl market, leading to a sharp decline in demand for natural pearls. Bahrain’s pearling industry, which had thrived on the exclusivity and rarity of its natural pearls, could not compete with the mass production of cultured pearls from Japan.

At the same time, Bahrain discovered oil in 1932, which shifted the focus of the economy away from pearling. The oil industry quickly became the dominant source of revenue

for the island, and many former pearl divers and traders transitioned into the oil sector. The discovery of oil brought modernisation and industrialisation to Bahrain, further accelerating the decline of traditional industries like pearling.

Though the pearling industry in Bahrain has long since diminished, its legacy continues to influence the country today. The story of Bahrain’s pearling past is preserved through cultural landmarks, museums and UNESCO World Heritage sites. The Pearling Trail, recognised by UNESCO in 2012, offers visitors a glimpse into the island’s pearling history, with sites ranging from traditional diving centres to merchant houses and ancient oyster beds.

Pearling remains an integral part of Bahrain’s cultural identity, celebrated in festivals, art and folklore. The pearl continues to symbolise Bahrain’s heritage, representing the island’s connection to the sea and its history of resilience, trade and craftsmanship. Today, while oil has replaced pearls as Bahrain’s main source of wealth, the memory of the pearling era lives on, reminding the world of the island’s rich maritime tradition.

This event is a unique opportunity for connoisseurs and jewellery lovers to experience the brilliance of Graff’s bridal jewellery and high jewellery collections up close. SPARKLING SHOWCASE

Jewellery Arabia 2024 is set to welcome a notable addition – the inaugural French Pavilion, organised by the French Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Bahrain (FCCIB). This pavilion will highlight the exceptional craftsmanship and innovation of French luxury brands. In an exclusive interview with Bahrain This Month, Rim Jalali, Executive Director of FCCIB, shares insights into the inspiration behind this initiative, the selection process for exhibitors, and the impact the French Pavilion is expected to have on Jewellery Arabia.

A First for Jewellery Arabia

This is the first time in 30 years that a French Pavilion will feature at Jewellery Arabia. “We noticed that while French brands were present, they were often scattered with no special emphasis,” says Mrs. Jalali. The new pavilion seeks to bring together French brands under one umbrella, showcasing France’s renowned craftsmanship in jewellery.

The French Pavilion, whose architecture in inspired from the famous Place Vendome in Paris, will be hosted by Asia Jewellers within its expansive 3,400 square-metre Grand Pavilion. “Asia Jewellers celebrates French artistry, strengthening the bonds of partnership between France and Bahrain,” she adds.

Curating a Selection of Excellence

Selecting the exhibitors for the French Pavilion was a meticulous process. FCCIB worked in collaboration with Francéclat and Asia Jewellers to ensure that the chosen brands represent the best of French innovation, quality and craftsmanship. The 11 bespoke brands representing French Haute Joaillerie are: Cédille, Copin, Canelle

Poncin-Germain Joaillerie, Elie Top, In Fine Joaillier, Lustrlabs, Maison Alix Dumas, Manoyas, Rouvenat, Tatiana Verstraeten Jewellery and Van Den Abeele, each offering a blend of tradition and modernity.

“Visitors can expect to see avant-garde designs that merge contemporary aesthetics with classic elegance,” says Mrs. Jalali. Many exhibitors will also offer bespoke services, allowing attendees to customise pieces, further enhancing the luxury experience.

Elevating Jewellery Arabia’s Prestige

The inclusion of French luxury brands is expected to draw a high-end clientele. “The French Pavilion will not only enhance the event’s diversity but also provide attendees with a more comprehensive view of global jewellery trends,” Mrs. Jalali explains. The pavilion’s presence will also foster networking opportunities, encouraging collaborations between French and local brands, benefiting the wider jewellery industry.

Overcoming Challenges

Organising this inaugural pavilion came with challenges, from logistics and funding to

securing exhibitor participation. “Ensuring a diverse selection of French brands while securing their commitment was one of our key challenges,” Mrs. Jalali notes. However, the opportunities far outweigh these obstacles, providing French brands a platform to increase their visibility in the Middle East.

A Glimpse into the Future

Looking ahead, Mrs. Jalali envisions the French Pavilion becoming a regular feature at Jewellery Arabia. “As the pavilion gains recognition, more French brands may be eager to participate, expanding the range of offerings,” she says. “Additionally, sustainability is expected to play a larger role, with future editions highlighting ecofriendly practices in luxury jewellery.”

The French Pavilion is not only set to enhance the prestige of Jewellery Arabia but also foster long-term Franco-Bahraini business relations. “We’re excited to see how this pavilion will evolve and contribute to the success of Jewellery Arabia,” Mrs. Jalali concludes.

YOUR FIRST HOME IN BAHRAIN

Whether you’re a local or an expat, buying your first property in Bahrain can seem daunting, but we’ve compiled a step-bystep guide to enable a smooth and rewarding process. From navigating the real estate market and securing financing to legal requirements and finding the perfect location, we’re here to help you make a confident and informed investment.

Buying

your first property is a major milestone, and Bahrain offers an attractive environment for both locals and expatriates looking to invest in real estate. With its growing economy, high quality of life and emerging property market, Bahrain has become an appealing destination for first-time homebuyers.

The Kingdom’s real estate market is dynamic, offering a mix of residential, commercial and investment properties. Over the last decade, the country has experienced significant growth, attracting both foreign and local investors. One of the key reasons is Bahrain’s freehold property ownership law, which allows expatriates to own property in designated areas such as Amwaj Islands, Durrat Al Bahrain, Seef, Reef Island and Bahrain Bay.

In Bahrain, you can find various types of properties, including:

● Apartments: Typically located in high-rise buildings, apartments offer a modern living experience, often with amenities such as gyms, pools and 24-hour security.

● Villas: These offer more space and privacy, usually located in residential compounds or gated communities, perfect for families.

● Townhouses: Townhouses provide a middle ground between villas and apartments, offering private space but at a lower cost than standalone villas.

● Commercial properties: For those looking to invest in business properties, there are office spaces and retail units available for purchase or lease.

Foreigners can buy property in Bahrain, but only in designated freehold areas. Citizens from GCC countries have more flexibility and can purchase property in most parts of Bahrain. When purchasing a property, it’s essential to understand your eligibility and ensure that the property you’re interested in falls within the legal zones for ownership.

One of the first steps to buying a property is determining how much you can afford. Your budget should include the cost of the property as well as additional expenses such as registration fees, legal fees and maintenance costs. Most banks in Bahrain offer mortgage services to both residents and expatriates. The mortgage typically covers up to 80 percent of the property’s value for locals and 60-70 percent for expatriates. Before applying for a mortgage, ensure you have a steady income, with a minimum salary of BD800 for expats and BD600 for locals, have a clean credit history and you should be within the required age range (usually between 21 and 60 years).

There are two main types of mortgages in Bahrain:

● Conventional Mortgages: These loans are offered by most banks and require monthly payments of both interest and principal over a set period.

● Islamic Mortgages (Ijara): These are Sharia-compliant and involve the bank purchasing the property and then leasing it to the buyer, with ownership transferred at the end of the lease term.

To find the best mortgage rate and terms for your property, shop around and consider factors like proximity to work, schools, hospitals, shopping centres and recreational facilities. Research upcoming developments and market trends to determine which areas offer the best return on investment. Popular expatriate areas include Juffair, Amwaj Islands, Saar, Seef and Adliya, each with its own unique lifestyle and community. Ensure the property is within reasonable distance from your workplace and consider future developments to maintain or increase property value.

A licensed real estate agent in Bahrain can simplify the property buying process by navigating legal requirements, providing market insights and negotiating on your behalf. Choose an agent with a solid reputation and familiarity with the area and property type. Agents typically charge a commission, ranging from 1 percent to 3 percent, so factor this into your budget. Before purchasing, understand the legal processes, as all property transactions in Bahrain must go through the Survey and Land Registration Bureau. Key steps include:

● Signing a Sales Agreement: Once you’ve found the property you want, you’ll sign a sales agreement with the seller. This document outlines the terms of the sale, including the price, payment schedule and any conditions.

● Due Diligence: It’s crucial to verify the legal status of the property, ensuring that the seller has clear ownership and that there are no outstanding debts or legal issues.

● Payment of Fees: You’ll need to pay a registration fee, which is 2 percent of the property’s value. Additionally, there may be legal fees, depending on the complexity of the transaction.

● Registration of the Property: Once all payments are made, the property will be registered in your name at the Survey and Land Registration Bureau, and you’ll receive the title deed.

For foreign buyers, it’s advisable to consult with a legal expert who specialises in Bahraini property law to ensure all the paperwork is in order.

Apart from the purchase price, several other costs need to be considered when buying a property in Bahrain. If you’re buying in a community or an apartment building, there will likely be monthly maintenance fees to cover shared services such as security, cleaning and landscaping. Protect your investment by purchasing home insurance, which covers damages or losses due to unforeseen events. There’s no direct property tax in Bahrain, but utility fees and municipal charges may apply. Before making a final decision, it’s crucial to thoroughly inspect the property. Check for any signs of damage, such as cracks, leaks or faulty wiring. If possible, hire a professional inspector to evaluate the condition of the property and provide a detailed report. This step can save you from costly repairs in the future.

The final step in the property-buying process is the closing. This is when the remaining payments are made, and ownership of the property is transferred. At this stage, you’ll receive the keys and title deed, officially making you the new owner. Make sure all final checks are completed, and ensure the property is free from any legal or financial encumbrances.

Buying your first property in Bahrain can be a rewarding experience, especially if you approach it with the right knowledge and preparation. By understanding the market, securing financing, choosing the right location and ensuring all legal requirements are met, you can make a sound investment that meets both your personal and financial goals. Take your time to research and work with professionals to guide you through the process, and soon you’ll be enjoying the benefits of owning your own home in this vibrant and growing country.

A CULINARY EXTRAVAGANZA

Edwin D’Souza discovers the Downtown Rotana Village Brunch, where a diverse selection of gourmet dishes meets a vibrant atmosphere. From fresh sushi rolls and a live salad station to mouth-watering ribs and decadent desserts, this brunch offers a feast for the senses, all set to the backdrop of live music and a DJ. An unforgettable dining experience awaits.

Witha diverse spread that caters to every palate, this brunch stands out as a true celebration of food. From meticulously crafted sushi rolls to a variety of interactive stations, including a live ‘make your own salad’ counter and a taco station bursting with flavour, there’s something to entice everyone as soon as you walk in.

The aforementioned salad counter is a refreshing addition that is bound to catch your eye, allowing you to customise your salad with an array of fresh ingredients. It’s a perfect and light way to start your meal. The sheer variety, from piles of greens to pineapple and apple medleys, really left me speechless but wanting more of that healthy stuff. I also discovered that the tomato mozzarella and watermelon feta salads bring a burst of freshness and vibrant flavours.

Just opposite to the healthy salads is the mouthwatering taco station, where the selection of salsas adds a punch of flavour to your tacos with generous beef fillings. You will undoubtedly come back for seconds after tasting the freshness in every bite. The beef sliders and chicken nuggets were comfort food at its finest with the burgers juicy and cooked perfectly, while the shrimp was cooked to just right, tender and full of flavour.

The star of the brunch was undoubtedly the ribs, seasoned with a smoky barbecue sauce that had just the right amount of sweetness and tang, while the beef tenderloin had the most tantalising and amazing flavours of all. The live egg station was another crowd-pleaser, offering the opportunity to have your eggs cooked exactly the way you like them.

When it comes to dessert, the options are as indulgent as they are varied. The ice cream counter and crepe station were the popular choices, with endless possibilities for customisation. For those with a sweet tooth, the array of desserts is impressive: the fruit tart was light and refreshing, the vanilla macaroons were delicately flavoured, and the San Sebastian cheesecake, which is a wellrenowned variant to die for, was rich and creamy. The coconut truffle and mousse were the perfect dessert for coconut lovers, while the chocolate fudge cake provided a decadent finish to the meal.

The ambience of the venue ties everything together, with live music creating a lively yet relaxed atmosphere, complemented by a DJ who keeps the energy upbeat and the crowd entertained. The Downtown Village Brunch is not just a buffet to savour but an experience, one that beautifully combines great food, variety and entertainment into a memorable dining adventure.

Money and You BUILDING THAT NEST

During my macroeconomic classes at university, we used to discuss the difference between expenditure or consumer-driven economies and savings-driven economies. In the former, government policies are aimed at providing ways for people to spend money such as lower tax rates and easier access to funding, so money will circulate in the economy and it will develop. On the other hand, savings-driven economies provide incentives to save, invest and spend prudently. This is done though tax incentives and higher returns

Here are some tips:

Know what you have and need

It is impossible to grow what you have, unless you know what you have and what you necessarily need. Without these two aspects you will have no point of reference. So, keep aside regular expenses. Add to this a reasonable buffer for unforeseen urgent needs. The remainder is your bag of twigs, and your nest can slowly be built.

Banks are a safe place to start

Start with the simplest places and ways to invest like banking and financial markets. In Bahrain, savings bank accounts give a near zero return on your money. So, these accounts are where one can place the buffer and the expenses that we talked about. However, for any investable money, you need to find avenues with higher rates of returns. Locally, fixed deposits give slightly higher rates of return (around 5 percent) depending on the amount and duration for which one is investing. Within the financial markets, if your risk appetite is higher, you can invest in crowd-funded projects.

Gold can be a good growth option

Outside of the financial markets, you could also invest in products like gold or silver whose prices also fluctuate and can give you a high return. Yes, your jewellery, and trainers and luxury bags, can be a part of your nest egg. They can appreciate, and they usually do.

What will you choose?

“Save for a rainy day” is a statement many of us would have grown up hearing about. However, it can be an uncomfortable and confusing concept. Some will experience today but save for tomorrow, some will experience today and assume there will be no rain, and others may live to save for tomorrow. The path one chooses however, is based on a number of factors.

In her latest article, Pria Masson discusses financial wellbeing and offers practical steps to build and grow your personal financial nest.

on investments, with the idea that money saved is money earned and this will churn the economy.

Ironically, people deal with money just the same way, either being expenditure or savings driven at a core level. However, what they forget is that they themselves need to put their own system and policies together so that they are afloat financially. There is no government backing or protecting their personal financial decisions.

The question is ultimately: would you be willing to sell your jewellery in a time of need? This question can be asked of any investment – is it something that you can dip into when times are difficult or are you going to be stressed if you must touch it? Think about why you get stressed using something that you created to save yourself from future stress. Invest in your financial wellbeing to be able to build and grow your financial nest egg so that it gives you wings – not stress.

THE BEST…UNE!

Cruising around Bahrain’s roads in the new Bestune T90 really drives home how advanced and sophisticated the brand has become over the years. Kristian Harrison finds out why the marque is now on the same level as its Western or Japanese counterparts … and in many ways surpasses them.

From the moment I revved up the engine of the 2.0 Turbo high-option Bestune T90, I knew I was in for a treat. With a hefty 258Nm of torque, this beauty bursts into life with a throaty rumble, taking me from 0 to 100km/h in just 7.7 seconds. And let me tell you, that burst of acceleration is something you won’t soon forget – it’s like this SUV is in a constant race against time! Whether navigating through Manama’s busy streets or cruising down the open highway, the T90 offers a drive that’s smooth yet thrilling, with plenty of power on demand.

The 2.0 Turbo engine isn’t just for show either. With an impressive fuel economy of 17.7km/l, I was pleasantly surprised at how efficiently it balanced performance with

practicality. A long-distance trip feels like a breeze, and the spacious 60-litre fuel tank ensures fewer stops along the way. But let’s be real – this isn’t just a ride; it’s a hightech playground.

Stepping inside, the first thing that caught my eye was the massive, iPad-like screen dominating the dashboard. This digital hub controls everything from navigation to entertainment and more, making it super easy to access features on the go. I couldn’t resist swiping through the menus – feeling a bit like I was piloting a spaceship rather than driving a car! The infotainment system is intuitive, and the three driving modes (Economy, Comfort and Sport) are just a touch away. In Sporty, the T90 practically begs you to test its limits – offering a punchy, responsive drive that keeps you on the edge of your seat.

Let’s talk features. This SUV is decked out with modern must-haves like lane departure warning, adaptive cruise control and a dynamic parking assist that’s perfect for city living. Whether you’re a tech geek or just love a good safety system, the T90 has you covered. And with a panoramic sunroof that lets the Bahraini sun in – well, it’s hard to imagine a better way to enjoy a scenic drive.

As for comfort, the T90 doesn’t disappoint. The leather steering wheel and adjustable electric seats ensure a luxurious feel, while the rear A/C outlets keep backseat passengers cool. It’s spacious too, more than enough room for family road trips or hauling gear for a weekend adventure.

One of the standout aspects of the Bestune T90 is how it combines all this tech and performance at an accessible price point. Priced at BD9,500, including VAT, with two years of insurance and registration, it’s hard to find a better deal on the market right now for what you get. Plus, the lifetime warranty gives you peace of mind long after you drive away. This is one ride that gives you more bang for your buck, whether you’re an adrenaline junkie or just in need of a reliable family vehicle.

So, is the Bestune T90 worth the hype? Absolutely. It ticks all the right boxes – style, performance and features, wrapped in an SUV that’s as practical as it is fun. How to sum up this test drive experience? Simply the Best…une!

Coldplay Moon Music

What’s the Story?

Moon Music (full title Music of the Spheres Vol. II: Moon Music) is the 10th studio album by British rock band Coldplay. Asked about the meaning behind the title, frontman Chris Martin stated: “Moon Music is kind of the story of waking up in the morning and feeling terrible about yourself, terrible about the world – depressed, isolated, separate, alone and not able to be yourself. Through the album, it’s a journey to feeling the complete opposite at the end of the day.”

Worth a Listen?

Moon Music is as exploratory and spacey as the title suggests and drifts further into the unexplored depths of the galaxy, catching signals of songs here and there. The opening title track, for example, is an introspective confessional that finds Chris Martin in search of something (and someone) more. Ultimately, the less immediate standouts provide the interesting bits of Moon Music that should stand the test of time. WE PRAY is a culmination of that globally unifying energy, a call to action that recruits English rapper Little Simz, Nigerian superstar Burna Boy, Argentine entertainer Tini and Palestinian Chilean singer/songwriter Elyanna on an urgent plea that blends dramatic strings and an aggressive hip-hop beat.

Lady Gaga Harlequin

Harlequin is a breath of fresh air in Lady Gaga’s catalogue, unhindered by the expectations of a typical pop album and perhaps the multifaceted artist at her most free. Tapping into her theatrical side, this companion piece to the Joker: Folie à Deux film (and not the other, actual official soundtrack) blurs the line between the persona (Harley Quinn) and the person (Gaga).

Take this as the debut album from the character of Harley Quinn, as played by Lady Gaga. Putting on that mask, she’s free to step outside of the mainline Gaga album trajectory and get playful. In the role of Lee, an in-character Gaga is allowed to say the quiet parts of her own experiences out loud (more so than she allows herself on her proper albums), and it’s wonderfully liberating to hear her express these feelings with a wink and a smile. Top to bottom, this is a coveted no-skips effort.

Snow Patrol

The Forest is the

Path

Reigniting their tender, earnest brand of early-2000s indie rock, Snow Patrol returned after a six-year gap with their eighth album, The Forest Is the Path. The set retains all of the Scottish band’s typical hallmarks: faint piano twinkles, atmospheric guitars, patient, midtempo beats, and Gary Lightbody’s wounded vocals and vulnerable lyrics about love and time.

Katy Perry 143

Though at a certain time she was incontestable pop royalty, Katy Perry’s creative vision (and relevance) have been in steady decline since sometime around 2015. With her seventh album 143, Perry’s once worlddominating winning streak is definitely over, with her learning nothing from past missteps. Perry wanders even further off the path with the lifeless, floundering reaches that make up 143. Kicking things off with the hollow, generic preset disco production of lead single Women’s World, 143 begins with an anthem that sounds wholly unsure of itself. The album rings the death knell for Perry for no other reason than it commits pop music’s ultimate sin: it’s boring.

Presenting MISS UNIVERSE 2024

Fresh from her coronation as Miss Universe Bahrain 2024, Shereen Ahmed is busy preparing for the upcoming final in Mexico later this month. In an exclusive interview with Woman This Month, she tells Farah Baig about her emotions after winning, her preparations for the upcoming pageant and how she plans to use her platform to inspire the next generation.

Congratulations on being crowned Miss Universe Bahrain 2024. How do you feel about winning and what inspired you to pursue this prestigious title?

Thank you! It has been an exhilarating few weeks since I found out I won the crown. I’m a little nervous for what’s to come, but ultimately excited to showcase the beauty of Bahrain’s culture and traditions to the rest of the Universe. Following my first stint in 2022, it always felt like there was unfinished business and that I could do more; however, the previous age limit of 28 years old had ended the dream of rejoining. During that time, I focused on my career as a TV presenter and found my love for pageantry through being inspired by a former Miss Universe Philippines candidate, Michelle Dee, whose journey spoke to me because she was advocacy-focused and intentional in her campaign. Then, the lifting of age limits was announced by the MU organisation, which felt like destiny was calling.

What did you learn from your first experience, and what changed the second time?

I assessed what went wrong with my previous performance and noted how I felt throughout it. Although I was somewhat prepared, I did not take into account the importance of training with others. So, in my second round, I reached out to have a Q&A and Personal Development coach, an online

and in-person pasarela trainer, as well as professional pageant makeup artists and stylists to receive advice on the tricks of the trade. I was fortunate enough to have a network of very loving and supportive people. But above all, it was truly my mindset that needed a complete transformation. To exude grace and confidence, I needed to genuinely feel it internally. So, I listened to self-improvement podcasts, watched interviews of women I admired, and took action on the things I had been wanting to do because, as one of the pageant coaches I learned from said: “Confidence comes from certainty, and certainty comes from action.”

Could you give our readers some insight into your personal and professional background?

I am a 29-year-old TV host, journalist and model based between Dubai and Bahrain. I was raised by a single Filipina mom and loved growing up in Bahrain until I decided to study outside the country independently. I have a podcast called Loud Besties with my best friend, Hiedy Riyan, to help younger girls feel a sense of sisterhood as we discuss navigating life’s transitions from your 20s to your 30s.

After graduating from Middlesex University Dubai with a Bachelor’s in Journalism and Media, I interned and eventually secured a full-time role at Lovin Dubai as a content writer, social media manager and presenter. I later managed Lovin Saudi and

briefly served as editor-in-chief of LocalBH Upon returning to Dubai, I landed a gig as a presenter, speaking in English, Tagalog and some Arabic. In 2022, I placed as 2nd runnerup at Miss Universe Bahrain, and now, I am honoured to be Miss Universe Bahrain 2024.

Would you say your experience as a presenter and content creator has helped you in the pageant thus far?

Absolutely. Pageants nowadays require you to campaign for yourself and your country both offline and online. My background in content creation and my interest in creative outlets like photography and visuals helped me bring to life what I had always envisioned. Another requirement is to be able to use your voice as a brand ambassador for your country, your people and the philanthropies that matter most to you. In that regard, being a presenter meant I was already comfortable in front of the camera and only needed to work on being concise and truly knowing who I am and how I want to express that.

How do you feel the representation of Bahraini culture can be enhanced at the Miss Universe pageant?

I think the inclusion of Bahrain in the pageant for the fourth consecutive year, and hopefully more, is already generating gradual interest and awareness about the Kingdom. Pageantry is a huge platform, with 10 million viewers tuning into the competition annually. That’s 10 million pairs of eyes and ears on our country, and it is up to each delegate to represent Bahrain in the best way they see fit. Slow steps are still steps in the right direction.

How do you hope to further change the perception of women in the Middle East through the pageant?

By simply existing. It is not up to us to change the world’s perception of us; it is a collaboration of spaces opening their doors to Arab women and Arab women choosing to take up space in their respective platforms of choice. Middle Eastern women come from diverse backgrounds, religions and values, and our common denominator is that we accept, tolerate and respect one another –regardless of these differences.

Miss Universe takes place in Mexico this month. How are you preparing for the upcoming pageant, and how would you describe your emotions at this point?

My emotions have been varying since the coronation. Sometimes I’m elated, other times nervous, but mostly I am focused on one task at a time. As a candidate with limited time to prepare, there is a lot to do in a short amount of time – pasarela training, more Q&A practice, advocacy work, creating social media content leading up to the pageant, and building awareness through media. Apart from that, I’ve also been practicing

my makeup application, hairstyling, creating mood boards for my outfits, and familiarising myself with the beautiful country of Mexico.

Can you share some causes that you are particularly passionate about? How do you plan to use your platform to promote them?

My primary causes are Hope Amel UAE and Hope Amal Bahrain, as well as any other community or social cause that pertains to the wellbeing of our fellow Arab brothers and sisters. I am there to either lend a helping hand or to use my voice.

What would be your advice for young women as someone who will be representing the country on a global scale?

Do not ever allow society to dictate who you are and what you can and cannot do. Every waking moment of this life is precious, so live as true to yourself as you can. You won’t regret it.

What’s something about you that always seems to surprise people?

It’s probably that I can speak Tagalog fluently. Many won’t assume that I am half Filipina at first glance, so it gets quite a reaction whenever I do.

Finally, what are your aspirations beyond the Miss Universe pageant?

Short-term, I want to start a digital show that highlights mental health and tools to help people navigate it or anything within the wellness industry. Mentoring future Miss Universe Bahrain or Middle Eastern candidates is another goal, as I hope for greater and better representation for our

Kingdom. Lastly, I would love to host a web series in English, exploring the rich history and culture of Bahrain in documentary format, all the way up to its modern-day successes.

Long-term, I plan to write a book, starting with a collection of poetry I’ve written from my youth until my 30s. In the future, I aim to write either a novel or an autobiography. My biggest dream as a little girl was to be a writer, and although I achieved that professionally, I have yet to publish an actual book under my byline. Additionally, it would be a dream come true to study Archaeology or Egyptology and uncover treasures from the past.

Collections has a fine selection that’s just right for the season. Plan your OOTD with some inspo from Magda Butrym.

This season, Magda Butrym embarks on a fascinating journey through visual narratives inspired by the iconic ‘Grey Gardens’, capturing the spirit of its eccentric yet charismatic inhabitants, and translating it into a compelling collection that exudes internal strength, confidence and a cinematic heroine’s allure.

The AW24 collection is an ode to freedom and a challenge to conventional fashion norms. Featuring head-swathed maxi cardigans, oversized shearling coats reminiscent of Edie’s garden attire, and a rich palette of saturated colours, the collection brilliantly juxtaposes robust outerwear with seductive shifts. The result is a captivating blend of masculine and feminine fashion that signals the joy of blending contrasting styles.

At the heart of the collection lies Magda Butrym’s appreciation for Polish cultural heritage, manifested through the standout accessory of the season – the headscarf. Symbolising femininity and rooted in Slavic tradition, these monochrome and floral adorned shawls embrace and safeguard the essence of womanhood, standing as a distinctive stylistic hallmark of the house.

From the wild roses adorning floral headscarves and petal-shaped silhouettes to the blossoming jewellery, Magda Butrym invites women to discover a sense of genuine style amidst a backdrop of untamed nature and industrial surroundings.

This collection is a must-have for those who seek to express their individuality and strength through style.

Earrings to wishlist!

I don’t want to define women. I want to empower them. I want us all to feel comfortable in our own skin, happy, powerful and confident. We should all be our own muses.

A Journey Rooted in Art

Born and raised in Bahrain, Ella discovered her passion for art when she was 10, thanks to the encouragement of her father, Devji Ramji. From an early age, she knew art was more than just a hobby – it was her voice, her way of expressing her thoughts and dreams.

In 1984, she launched her career as a contemporary artist, and two decades later, her dream of opening an art gallery in Bahrain became a reality.

Ella’s unique artistic style features bold lines and shapes. With minimal colours, she highlights the emotional depth of her paintings while omitting facial details. Her palette knife allows her to channel emotion into each stroke.

Art That You Can Wear

Ella’s journey didn’t stop at painting, extending her artistic vision into fashion and jewellery, creating something that was not just visually appealing but wearable. Thus, Ella Jewellery was born.

With her love for 21k gold and her deep connection to Indian roots, she began crafting intricate designs that resonate with both art lovers and fashion enthusiasts alike. What sets Ella’s jewellery apart is its connection to her paintings. Each piece is a limited edition, inspired by her art and cultural heritage.

Her ‘Noor Collection’ draws inspiration from Bahrain’s architecture, blending traditional elegance with contemporary artistic boldness. These aren’t just accessories; they are pieces of art that tell a story, designed for those who appreciate beauty with depth

A Creative Fusion Where Art Meets Jewellery:

Ella Prakash, a visionary who has been making waves in Bahrain’s creative scene for years, speaks exclusively to Woman

This Month to share insights into what fuels her artistic passions, the challenges she has overcome and her vision for her brands –Ella Jewellery, Ella Art and Ella Impressions.

From Canvas to Jewellery

Creating jewellery is no less an art form than painting for Ella. Each design begins as an idea born from her artwork and goes through a meticulous process. She starts with the concept, carefully considering how her artistic style can translate into something wearable. Then comes the intricate craftsmanship – each curve, every detail is thoughtfully crafted by master craftsmen to reflect her artistic vision. Her jewellery pieces are more than just fashion accessories – they embody a blend of traditional craftsmanship and modern design. Whether it’s the gold elements, the cultural motifs or the contemporary silhouettes, her work offers a fresh perspective on jewellery design.

Aesthetics with Ethics

But Ella’s approach isn’t just about luxury – it’s about ethics too. Her brand emphasises sustainable practices, from the ethical sourcing of materials to production techniques that minimise waste. This dedication makes her work beautiful and responsible, appealing to discerning buyers who value aesthetics and ethics.

While Ella’s roots are firmly planted in Bahrain, her work has gained international recognition. One of the most significant milestones in her career was participating in Jewellery Arabia 2021, a platform that introduced her designs to a broader audience. This experience helped her understand what her global clientele seeks in high-end, artdriven jewellery.

Striking the Perfect Balance

Juggling her roles as an artist, designer and businesswoman is no small feat, but Ella’s ability to balance creativity with the demands of running multiple brands has been key to her success.

“I manage my time and energy to stay balanced,” she explains, revealing that her daily routine of meditation, exercise and painting is crucial in keeping her focused and productive.

Ella’s unique approach to combining art with jewellery is an extension of her personal story and also a testament to her belief that fashion can be meaningful. Every piece she creates carries with it a sense of purpose, heritage and artistry – making each one as special as the person who wears it.

EMPOWERING SURVIVORS

with areola pigmentation & more

In the modern world, beauty and wellness are vital aspects of medical science. Laila Bukanan has emerged as a trailblazer in semi-permanent makeup and paramedical procedures. As the owner and founder of LB Beauty Studio, she is not only an Elite and Advanced Semi-Permanent Makeup Artist but also a Master International Trainer. She tells Woman This Month more about her career and work to empower cancer survivors.

Ms. Bukanan’s expertise, particularly in paramedical procedures like areola pigmentation for cancer patients postmastectomy, has positioned her as the first and only technician in Bahrain to collaborate with plastic surgeons. Through her innovative work, she merges the art of pigmentation with cutting-edge medical science, providing life-changing services to women recovering from the physical and emotional impact of breast cancer.

Indeed, Ms. Bukanan’s journey began in Austria, where she encountered a cancer patient whose procedure had left her physically and mentally distressed. This experience inspired her to focus on a procedure that not only restores a natural appearance but also has a profound psychological impact. “It was at that moment that I decided to dedicate myself to helping women regain their sense of identity through areola pigmentation,” she says. With a degree from the prestigious International Passport for Aestheticians in Switzerland, Ms. Bukanan specialises in assisting cancer patients, as well as offering cosmetic enhancements for eyebrows, lips and eyeliner.

Chosen by the renowned Swiss Colour Academy as a certified paramedical technician, she has completed rigorous theoretical and practical training using the latest innovations. “We use only Swiss Colour-approved devices and pigments, designed specifically for these procedures,” she explains. “The advanced nano cartridges and meticulous planning ensure that every step is tailored to achieve the best possible results. Ultimately, I am passionate about delivering excellence, combining technical skill with a deep understanding of her clients’ needs.”

One of the greatest challenges Ms. Bukanan has faced in Bahrain is raising awareness about the benefits of areola pigmentation. “Most women are unfamiliar with the procedure, and obtaining approval for the necessary devices and pigments was a lengthy process,” she notes. However, her determination and commitment to adhering to the highest standards have paid off, as her work is now recognised and trusted by both clients and medical professionals in the Kingdom. Plastic surgeons often refer patients to her, and the first appointment is a crucial step in the process. “We reassure the client about how minimalistic the procedure is, and showing before and after photos always has a powerful impact,” she shares.

The most rewarding part of her work, she says, is witnessing the transformation in her clients’ confidence and self-esteem. “To see a woman smile again, to feel that she has regained her identity, is indescribably rewarding.” This is the driving force behind Ms. Bukanan’s dedication, and it’s evident in the warm and welcoming environment of her studio. From the moment clients step in, they are met with soothing music and a comfortable atmosphere, reassured that they are in expert hands.

Thanks to her expertise and determination, areola pigmentation is now available and recognised in Bahrain. She continues to set the standard for paramedical procedures, combining innovation, artistry and compassion in a way that truly changes lives.

International Day of the Girl Child

Why Financial Literacy for Girls is Essential

Financial Literacy Advocate, author and Assistant Professor – Finance at Bahrain Polytechnic, Dr. Bilal Ahmad Pandow, highlights the importance of financial literacy on the occasion of International Day of the Girl Child.

Every year on October 11, the world celebrates the International Day of the Girl Child to highlight the challenges girls face and promote their empowerment. This year, the focus has expanded beyond simply ensuring that girls receive an education. It’s time to emphasise a critical but often overlooked skill: financial literacy. Educating girls on how to manage money, understand savings, investments and economic decision-making could be one of the most transformative ways to create a brighter, more equitable future.

According to UNICEF, despite clear evidence showing the importance of girls’ education for development, gender gaps in schooling remain widespread. Globally, 119 million girls are not attending school, with 34 million of them at the primary level, 28 million at the lower-secondary level, and 58 million at the upper-secondary level. In conflict-affected countries, girls are more than twice as likely to be out of school compared to those in peaceful regions.

A 2018 study by the World Bank estimates that restricted access to education for girls, along with obstacles to finishing 12 years of schooling, results in a loss of USD15 trillion to USD30 trillion in lifetime productivity and earnings for countries.

While the disparities are more noticeable in countries experiencing fragility, conflict and

violence. In these nations, girls are 2.5 times more likely than boys to be out of school, and at the secondary level, they are 90 percent more likely to be out of school compared to girls in non-fragility, conflict and violence regions.

Why Financial Literacy Matters for Girls

Financial literacy isn’t just about knowing how to handle money; it’s about economic independence. For girls, especially those from underprivileged or conflict-affected regions, understanding finance can be lifechanging.

With financial education, they gain the tools to lift themselves and their families out of poverty. It’s not just about survival; it’s about thriving. Financial literacy teaches them how to save, invest and manage resources efficiently, giving them control over their economic future.

Girls who know how to handle money are less likely to be abused, engaged or trafficked for sexual purposes. They can handle life’s problems better, even when things are tough, if they know how to handle their money and fight for their financial rights.

Prioritise Education over Direct Financial Support

Giving girls more power is often done by philanthropists through direct financial help. Even though the goal is beneficial, this is only a short-term fix for a long-term issue. Instead, philanthropists should support projects that teach and improve skills, especially when it comes to finances.

Cashouts can help girls and their families with short-term needs, but they don’t fix the problems that make people poor in the first place. Teaching girls how to handle money is a skill that will help them for a long time. In other words, “teach someone to fish rather than giving them a fish,” this is the old

saying. Donors who put money into financial education are investing in a long-term way to fight poverty and injustice.

Getting educated, especially in financial topics, helps girls come up with creative ways to make money. Girls who know about finances are more likely to start their own business, which will help the market and create jobs. Direct financial support can be helpful in the short term, but it rarely encourages people to be more creative, which is what drives long-term economic growth.

Girls who learn about finances grow up to be financially independent adults. They are less likely to depend on help from outside sources and more likely to make smart financial choices that protect their futures. To break the circle of poverty, people need to be able to live on their own for a long time.

Learning about finances can help close the gap between men and women in the workforce. Women around the world are less likely than men to own land or be able to use financial services. Philanthropists can help close this gap by teaching girls how to handle and grow their finances.

Call for Action

Philanthropists have a unique opportunity to empower the next generation of women by focusing on education rather than immediate financial aid. Programmes that prioritise financial literacy should be at the forefront of any girl-child empowerment initiative. These programmes not only provide valuable life skills but also instill confidence, self-reliance and a sense of purpose in girls.

In regions like sub-Saharan Africa, South Asia, and conflict-affected areas such as Kashmir, where girls face systemic barriers to education and independence,

financial literacy programmes are crucial. Philanthropists can collaborate with schools, local NGOs and international organisations to integrate financial literacy into existing educational curricula.

Girls can learn about financial matters in a variety of ways, such as in the classroom, through workshops, mentorship programmes and online resources. These methods can make learning more comprehensive, making sure that everyone can receive and enjoy financial education.

The International Day of the Girl Child is a reminder of how much girls around the world can do. Giving girls financial support may help in the short term, but giving them financial literacy is an investment in their future. Giving money to charities that teach girls about financial literacy doesn’t just improve people’s lives; it also makes the world more equitable and prosperous.

Let’s move beyond temporary solutions and invest in the transformative power of education, ensuring that girls everywhere have the tools to shape their financial futures.

seen on the tinted lips of Marilyn Monroe. Pink, more subtle, is a legacy of regal attire that has transformed to currently reflect a barbie-like innocence. Orange, a substitute for gold and the traditional colour of silk, is now synonymous with energy borrowed from natural elements. Lastly, intense, deep shades of rich brown through to plum, saw chocolate-coloured pigments blend with complex mauve to gradually transform into a feminist symbol. Aside from the expressive colours, the lipstick has a hydrating and comfortable formula, enriched with oil from the gardenia, a white flower cultivated by CHANEL, which elevates the lips day after day: they are plumper, smoother and firmer.

Let’ s Learn, Baby! Let’ s Learn, Baby!

You can never be too young to start learning. Ouiam El Hassani shares nine ways to boost your baby’s reading skills.

As parents, we want to give our babies the best start in life, and one of the most crucial areas of development is early literacy. Building a strong foundation for language and literacy skills early on can have a lasting impact on a child’s future success. Engaging your baby in literacy activities not only fosters a love for reading but also promotes cognitive development, vocabulary acquisition and bonding moments.

As an early-years teacher, I have compiled nine interactive and fun reading activities that will help you lay the groundwork for your baby’s lifelong journey with language and literacy.

Rhyme and Sing

Storytime Snuggles

Cuddle up with your little one and make storytime a regular part of your daily routine. Choose colourful board books or soft cloth books with simple, repetitive texts and vibrant illustrations. Engage your baby by using different voices, facial expressions and gestures as you read. Even though they may not understand all the words, your baby will start associating reading with love and affection.

Expose your baby to the musicality of language through nursery rhymes and songs. The rhythmic patterns and repetition in nursery rhymes help develop phonological awareness — a critical skill for future reading success. Sing nursery rhymes, play finger games and use hand puppets to make the experience more engaging. Your baby will love the interaction and the soothing melodies.

Picture Talk

Sensory Play with Textures

Babies learn through their senses, so provide them with opportunities to explore different textures. Create a sensory bin filled with soft fabric books, crinkly books and books with touch-and-feel elements. Let your baby touch, feel and interact with the textures as you talk about the different sensations they experience.

Peek-a-boo with Books

Babies love surprises! Use peek-a-boo books to capture their attention and build anticipation. Lift the flaps, uncover hidden objects or reveal characters as you play peek-a-boo. This activity not only keeps your baby engaged but also introduces them to the concept of cause and effect.

Take your baby on a visual adventure by engaging in picture talk. Choose books with colourful, large and clear illustrations. Point to objects and name them, talk about the colours, shapes and actions you see. Encourage your baby to imitate sounds or gestures from the pictures. This activity enhances their vocabulary and language skills while strengthening their visual comprehension.

Word Discovery with Flashcards

Start building your baby’s vocabulary early on by using flashcards with simple pictures and words. Show them the cards and name the objects or animals depicted. Encourage your baby to touch or point to the pictures. Repetition is key, so aim to make it a part of your daily routine.

Rhyme Time Riddles

As your baby grows, introduce them to simple riddles and rhymes. For example, say, “I have a tail and I say, ‘meow.’ What am I?” Encourage your baby to guess the answer and respond with excitement when they get it right. This activity boosts their critical thinking skills and builds their ability to make connections between words and concepts.

Family Story Time

Involve the whole family in your reading time. Each family member can read a different book or take turns narrating different parts, during reading time. This activity not only promotes family bonding but also exposes your baby to different storytelling styles and perspectives.

Puppet Storytelling

Bring stories to life with puppets! Use finger puppets or hand puppets to act out simple stories or engage in interactive conversations. Your baby will be captivated by the movement and voices of the puppets, fostering their imagination and creativity.

Engaging your baby in literacy activities from an early age lays the foundation for a lifelong love of reading and learning. These interactive and enjoyable activities are designed to stimulate your baby’s language development, cognitive skills, and imagination. Remember, it’s not just about the words on the page — it’s about the joy, connection and shared moments that will shape your baby’s literacy journey. So, grab a book, unleash your creativity and embark on this exciting adventure together!
