House Marketing Chairman and Publisher of Bahrain This Month and Woman This Month, George Middleton, reflects on his time in Bahrain – a place he considers home.

It seems like only yesterday that I arrived in Bahrain to live and work on a permanent basis on November 9, 1979. Stepping onto this vibrant and culturally rich land, I had no idea that it would become my home for the next 45 years – a place where I would grow personally and professionally while becoming a part of the fabric of society.

When I first arrived, Bahrain was undergoing rapid development, with an energy and potential that immediately captured my imagination. I came here eager to apply my skills in a setting that offered huge opportunities. Bahrain’s strategic position in the Gulf and its burgeoning economy made it the perfect place to pursue my ambitions and build a life with my family.

Over the decades in this island Kingdom, I developed deep friendships with people from all over the world and immersed myself in the culture and traditions of Bahrain. I quickly learned to appreciate the warmth and hospitality of its people, as well as the country’s deep-rooted values. This mutual respect became the foundation of everything I’ve been able to achieve here, whether it was innovating new projects, mentoring young professionals, or contributing to community initiatives.

Over the years, I’ve been fortunate to witness – and in some small way, contribute to – Bahrain’s incredible transformation. From a growing economy in the late 1970s to the modern, dynamic nation it is today, Bahrain has consistently demonstrated its resilience and forward-thinking approach. It’s been a privilege to work on projects that have not only driven business innovation but also supported the aspirations of this nation to become a regional leader.

What stands out most to me, however, are the relationships I’ve built along the way. Bahrain has not just been a place to work but a place to live and grow. I’ve embraced its diversity, participated in its cultural celebrations and supported causes close to my heart. In doing so, I’ve come to see myself as not just a resident but a true member of the community.

Reflecting on these 45 years, I feel immense gratitude. Bahrain has given me so much – a platform for my career, a rich cultural experience, and the chance to be part of its remarkable story. I’ve watched the skyline evolve, the economy diversify and the people innovate, all while holding fast to the values that make this great nation unique.

Looking back, I’m proud of the contributions I’ve been able to make, but I’m even more inspired by what Bahrain has accomplished. This country’s ability to blend tradition with progress is truly unique and remarkable and I am honoured to have played a part in its journey.

As I look to the future, I remain as committed as ever to supporting Bahrain’s continued growth and success. This is more than where I live – it’s now both my home and my country and I couldn’t be prouder to call it that.

CELEBRATING THE PAST AND SHAPING THE FUTURE

Reflecting on 2024, Mr. Al Arayedh highlighted the group’s strategic expansion and philanthropic efforts. “This year, we added Kuala Lumpur to our existing representative offices in London, Singapore and Geneva,” he says. Beyond business growth, the group received recognition for its extensive social responsibility initiatives. “We’ve supported numerous activities focusing on needy families and empowering youth and women, which earned acknowledgments from the Ministry of Social Affairs, the Capital Governorate, Northern Governorate and other official entities.”

He expressed deep appreciation for Bahrain’s progress under HM King Hamad’s vision, complemented by the support and dedication of HRH Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Crown Prince and Prime Minister. “The leadership of Bahrain has brought real transformation across various sectors of the country, including significant progress across economic, political and social sectors. We hope to witness continued growth and prosperity for all.”

A VISIONARY LEADER AND PHILANTHROPIC PIONEER

Pambavasan Nair, the Founder and Managing Director of Amad Group since 1998, is a visionary entrepreneur, industrialist and philanthropist, leading the company through 26 successful years in the Gulf region.

With his strategic vision and unwavering commitment, Mr. Nair expanded into the industrial sector. In 2007, he launched a switchgear factory in Bahrain, and by 2010, he had established a new switchgear facility in Saudi Arabia. His pioneering spirit marked a historic achievement as he became the first expatriate to initiate automated switchgear factories in both Bahrain and Saudi Arabia. His significant contributions and bold initiatives in the industrial sector have been met with widespread recognition and appreciation from the rulers of both Kingdoms.

During the challenging period of the COVID-19 pandemic, Mr. Nair demonstrated exceptional resilience and dedication. He invested BD1.8 million to expand his Bahrain factory, transforming it into a fully automated facility equipped with advanced technologies. Apart from the switchgear factories in Al Mazraa Industrial Park, Bahrain and Jubail Industrial Area, Saudi Arabia, he is proceeding with his third factory in the Saudi MODON Industrial Area. This project is valued at more than SR50 million.

A highly respected philanthropist, Mr. Nair’s contributions extend across the GCC and India. For many years, he has been dedicated to supporting various social and charitable causes, providing assistance regardless of caste, creed or religion. His philanthropic endeavours include financial aid for medical treatments, education sponsorships, home construction for the homeless and regular monetary support for those in need. In 2023, he established the CMN Trust, named after his late parents, Chandramma and Madhavan Nair. Furthermore, demonstrating his commitment to public welfare, he offered his hospital building in Kerala to the government as a quarantine and treatment centre for COVID-19 patients for two years.

“Charity is not just about making a donation. It is about making a difference,” believes Mr. Nair. True to this belief, he launched the ‘Home of Your Own’ project, which aims to provide 50 homes to underprivileged families over the next five years – a significant step toward giving shelter to those in need.

Mr. Nair is married to Kala Nair, and they have two children. Their daughter, Dr. Namrata, is pursuing her MD residency in dermatology at the Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences, while their son, Vighnesh, has graduated in Electrical Engineering from the University of Nottingham.

Mr. Nair firmly believes in the principle that we must strive for personal growth while embracing a shared responsibility for humanity.

BRIDGING DIPLOMACY FROM ROME TO MANAMA

In this interview, we sit down with His Excellency Andrea Catalano, the Italian Ambassador to the Kingdom of Bahrain, to explore the longstanding relationship between the two countries. With a distinguished career spanning diverse diplomatic roles across multiple regions, Ambassador Catalano brings a wealth of experience to his role in the Kingdom. Here, he shares insights on Italy’s diplomatic and cultural endeavours, his experience so far, and upcoming initiatives that celebrate and strengthen this special partnership.

Your Excellency, could you kindly tell us about your diplomatic career and the journey that led you to your role as Ambassador to Bahrain?

Thank you for the opportunity to share my journey with your readers. It has been an honour and privilege to represent Italy through various roles, which allowed me to engage with diverse cultures and navigate complex geopolitical landscapes. Each posting has been a learning experience, marked by distinct challenges.

I began my career as a Political Officer in Cairo, where I was immersed in the Middle East’s rich cultural and political dynamics. Later, as Head of the Economic Affairs Section in Tripoli from 2008 to 2011, I coordinated the

evacuation of hundreds of Italian and third-country nationals during Libya’s crisis, which was a profound experience of teamwork and empathy. In Rome, I furthered my regional expertise as Deputy Head and Acting Head of the Maghreb Office, before moving to Washington, D.C., where I worked on foreign and security affairs, with a focus on Libya and the broader MENA region.

Since my appointment as Ambassador to Bahrain, I’ve worked to strengthen our bilateral ties and foster cultural exchanges. The bond between Italy and Bahrain is strong, and I am committed to further nurturing this relationship in collaboration with the Bahraini government and people.

How would you describe the current state of diplomatic relations between Italy and Bahrain?

The relationship is excellent, marked by mutual respect and a constructive dialogue across political, economic and cultural spheres. Since Italy established its embassy in Manama in 2002, our ties have deepened, underscoring our shared values and cooperation.

Bahrain’s focus on constitutional and economic reforms aligns closely with Italy’s commitment to sustainable development, inclusivity and innovation. The 2021 Memorandum of Understanding establishing the Bilateral Joint Commission has taken our partnership to new heights. This year’s first high-level meeting in Rome symbolised our dedication to further exploring cooperation, especially in industry and investment.

Can you tell us about the Italian community in Bahrain?

The Italian community here is vibrant, numbering about 600, up from only 200 a decade ago. Italians contribute significantly across sectors such as business, engineering and the food industry. In project management, technology and the culinary arts, Italians bring expertise that enhances Bahrain’s development and deepens our bilateral ties.

Could you provide some insight into the current trade figures between Italy and Bahrain? Which areas show the most growth potential?

Our trade relationship is robust, reflecting the positive trajectory of both our economies. Italian exports to Bahrain primarily include machinery, industrial plants, furniture, construction materials, transportation, fashion and agrifood products. In 2018, trade reached a milestone of €530 million, with a 46 percent year-on-year increase driven by significant growth in Bahraini exports to Italy, particularly refined petroleum and aluminium.

Italian companies, such as Technip Italia, are involved in large-scale projects like the $4.2 billion BAPCO refinery modernisation, and ENI’s agreement with Bahrain’s National Oil and Gas Authority in 2019 underscores our partnership in the energy sector. There are many promising opportunities in logistics, tourism and services, with Bahrain’s focus on sustainable development paving the way for Italian start-ups and innovators.

How is the Italian Embassy in Bahrain working to promote Italian culture and heritage?

Promoting Italian culture in Bahrain is a cherished mission. Our Embassy has a long-standing partnership with Bahrain’s cultural institutions, participating in key events like the Bahrain International Music Festival. This year, we hosted a jazz concert featuring renowned Italian musicians Luca Velotti and Silvia Manco.

Our cultural programming includes events such as the Italian Contemporary Art Day and the XXIV Week of the Italian Language, which celebrate Italy’s artistic and linguistic heritage. The IX Week of Italian Cuisine showcased the Mediterranean diet, emphasising our rich culinary traditions. Through these events, we aim to create a shared cultural space where Italian and Bahraini traditions can thrive and inspire one another.

What are some recent or upcoming initiatives from the Italian Embassy?

We were excited to host the Italian Sports Day last month, coinciding with the prestigious Ironman competition in Bahrain. Looking ahead, we have a vibrant cultural and economic agenda for 2025, which includes collaborations with Bahraini institutions and initiatives that invite Italian businesses to contribute to Bahrain’s dynamic growth.

How will the Italian Embassy participate in Bahrain National Day, and what message do you have for the people of Bahrain on this occasion?

Bahrain National Day is a cherished occasion, and it’s an honour for us to join in the celebrations. Our Embassy closes so that we can fully participate and stand in solidarity with our Bahraini friends, celebrating Bahrain’s rich heritage, unity and achievements.

To the people of Bahrain, I extend my warmest congratulations. The Kingdom’s progress and steadfast commitment to peace and stability, particularly its leadership within the GCC and its Presidency of the League of Arab States, are truly admirable, and Italy is proud to be a close friend and partner of this remarkable nation.

Are there any joint projects or partnerships to celebrate the diplomatic relations between Italy and Bahrain?

We’re working on establishing educational partnerships between Italian and Bahraini universities, focusing on fields like engineering, sustainable development and the arts. These collaborations aim to foster academic exchanges and technical expertise. In the economic sphere, we’re exploring cooperation in green infrastructure and renewable energy projects, where Italian companies can contribute significantly.

Finally, what impression has Bahrain left on you, and what message would you like to share with its people?

Living in Bahrain has been a deeply rewarding experience. From the moment I arrived, I was embraced by the warmth and kindness for which Bahrainis are known. This is a remarkable country, rich in tradition yet vibrant and forward-looking.

A New Chapter Begins Soon

A PAWS-ITIVE CHANGE FOR FELINE FRIENDS

With the situation regarding animal abandonment in Bahrain being critically alarming, a group of compassionate women formed Rescat in October 2019. Their mission: to rescue abandoned cats in Bahrain, provide them with medical care and rehome them to loving families in the Netherlands. They speak to Kristian Harrison about the organisation’s origins, its tireless work to improve the lives of our furry friends, and how animal lovers in the Kingdom can make a positive contribution this festive season.

was originally born from the Bahrain Stray Cats group on Facebook, driven by an alarming increase in abandoned pets, and has included members such as founder Maha Alsahhaf, Noelle King, Laia Portet Codina, Joylyn Fernandes and Sha Pascual.

“Our initial project was Challenge 68, where we rescued 68 cats from a dire hoarding situation,” Ms. Alsahhaf says. “We realised the urgent need to facilitate rehoming because local adoption options were scarce, and Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) programmes were virtually non-existent.”

Rescat faces significant challenges, particularly from the prevalence of unregulated breeders and pet shops operating in poor conditions. “Many people still purchase pets instead of adopting, which fuels the cycle of abandonment,” Ms. King points out. “Additionally, a lack of awareness about spaying and neutering leads to unplanned litters, overwhelming families

who often abandon the kittens. This issue, combined with exorbitant veterinary costs, makes the work incredibly demanding.”

Despite these obstacles, Rescat successfully rehomes eight cats every month. While the organisation initially worked with UK families, rising travel costs post-COVID-19 led them to shift their efforts to the Netherlands. “The Netherlands has a culture that values animal welfare,” Ms. King notes. “The Dutch treat their cats like family, and we’ve established a smooth process, albeit with logistical challenges like flight rerouting through Dubai.”

Before the cats embark on their new lives abroad, meticulous preparation is essential. Each cat undergoes a thorough medical check, receives a health certificate from a Bahraini vet and meets travel requirements such as export permits and IATA-approved crates. Rescat also relies heavily on foster families in Bahrain, who play a crucial role in caring for the cats until their journey.

“We have over 60 cats in need of foster homes right now,” explains Ms. Alsahhaf, who is also heavily involved with the initiative. Rescat carefully screens prospective fosters, ensuring their homes are safe and suitable.

“Fosters provide food, water and a secure environment, while we cover veterinary costs. They are also responsible for transporting the cats to vet or ministry appointments.”

The organisation depends on community support to sustain its operations. Donations can be made directly to veterinary clinics, and Rescat welcomes volunteers for tasks such as transportation, fundraising and social media management. “Every contribution, whether through fostering, donating or volunteering, helps us save more lives,” the team concludes.

One of the buffet’s highlights was the live station, where fresh meats are grilled right before your eyes. Whether you prefer juicy steaks, succulent lamb chops or perfectly grilled sausages, the chefs skillfully prepare the meats to your desired level of doneness. The real treat comes with pairing sauces which elevate these morsels. Rich mushroom sauce, tangy lemon butter, peppercorn sauce, smoky barbecue and creamy béarnaise sauce ensure that each bite of meat is bursting with flavour. The braised beef brisket which was tender and flavourful was another standout.

Pescatarians can indulge in the roasted red snapper fillet – a fantastic choice.

One of the fun elements of this brunch was the ‘make-yourown’ Caesar salad station, where guests can whip up a salad with fresh greens, crunchy croutons and creamy dressing.

To tantalise your palate, the salad counter offers an array of refreshing options, including mixed seafood salad, Thai beef salad, tuna and corn salad, and traditional Arabian salads. The seafood counter was equally impressive, serving up a variety of fresh seafood to enjoy.

No meal is complete without dessert, and Mövenpick’s offerings are not to be missed. Indulge in decadent treats like Brazilian Coffee Bananas, Apricot Royale, Mango Tart Tartin, Dulce de Leche, a delicious Florida cake, Baklava and a delightful chocolate

The power of compounding

Last month, I wrote about how you can get started on thinking about building a small nest for yourself with whatever disposable savings you may have. This month, I would like you to convert that discussion into action, by thinking about where you can park the money to give you returns above the basic bank rate – and why you need to do that.

One of the most fascinating aspects of investing is the idea of compounding interest. For those of you who may not be clear on the idea, it works on the idea that if you invest 100 today and earn 10 percent on that, if you do not withdraw it, the next cycle you’re investing 110 and earning 10 percent on 110 rather. Does it all seem like very small numbers? Look at the table alongside and think again. Do you still think you should not invest to compound your money?

How banks and financial institutions give you an interest at all

Bank rates are notoriously the lowest returns you get from any asset class. The reason is simple – low risk, low return. Your money is very secure – unless the economy you’re living and investing in is itself in trouble. How is this achieved? To understand that, lets first step into how banks give you any return.

Banks accept money from you, they keep it safe and in turn they generate a small interest from that money by placing that money with the central bank of the specific country. This is liquid, which means, it can be withdrawn any time thereby making it secure. If, on the other hand, you want a higher return, you must sacrifice part of that liquidity and promise not to ask for the money for longer – that brings us to fixed deposits. Even within these, the more you sacrifice (longer duration), the higher your return and lower your liquidity on an immediate basis. These are the basics of how any investment product works – understand this, and you will understand why higher returns means higher risk.

Where can you invest?

Based on your risk appetite, you would have options to invest your savings in several ways. I have included a handy table here for you to get an idea of the options and their risk return profiles.

Mutual Funds and Systematic Investment Plans (SIP)

Of these many options, one of the highest returns come from stock markets, because the risk is higher. How do you mitigate that risk? By choosing options where you don’t have to pick a specific stock, you can give the money to an expert to invest it for you through mutual funds. In return, the institution that provides the mutual fund, will charge you fees (usually in the range of 1-2 percent annually). SIPs are specific plans where you can invest a pre-determined amount of money each month. While options for mutual funds have been historically limited, things are changing now. In the UAE and Saudi Arabia, there are opportunities available which even nonresidents can partake in for a minimum amount of BD500. With new products launching fast, more countries are likely to offer these options.

Investment is a game of trust, in yourself in the regulatory environment, banking system and in the published information available to you. These are the ingredients you have, and you must choose what you want to create. You know what each element means to you, but can you accept the final product? Your risk appetite is not really about risk, it’s about a need for reward and understanding what drives you and what you’re willing to give up for that end goal. Choose mindfully.

AEROLAM BREAKS GROUND ON USD14 MILLION FACILITY IN BAHRAIN

Aerolam Group of Companies, headquartered in Ahmedabad, India, a manufacturing leader for the HVAC and building insulation market, announced the groundbreaking of its new USD14 million manufacturing facility in Bahrain.

This milestone marks Aerolam’s first international plant, set to be located in the Bahrain International Investment Park, Salman Industrial Area, Hidd. The facility will support the company’s commitment to meeting the growing demand for insulation solutions across the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region.

The construction industry in MENA, particularly in Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, is projected to expand at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR)

Bahrain International Circuit hosted the 2024 FIA WEC BAPCO Energies 8 Hours of Bahrain kicking-off the road to the F1 Grand Prix 2025.

TITLE THRILLER!

The FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) 8 Hours of Bahrain thrilled thousands of fans both on and off the track at Bahrain International Circuit, with a feast of entertainment on offer. Kristian Harrison witnessed the adrenalinefuelled action on track as the chequered flag dropped on another nail-biting season of one of motorsports’ most important series.

The #8 Toyota Gazoo Racing trio of Sébastien Buemi, Ryō Hirakawa and Brendon Hartley took a brilliant win in an action-packed 8 Hours of Bahrain, with the race disrupted by two Safety Car periods that set up dramatic shootouts in both WEC classes.

Buemi was spun out of the lead by a GT car in the first hour, but delivered an outstanding drive to chase down the #5 Porsche Penske 963 and regain the lead in the final hour. This result earned Toyota its fourth consecutive FIA Hypercar World Endurance Manufacturers’ Championship title and sixth FIA WEC top-class Manufacturers’ title, including two won in the LMP1 era.

The #6 Porsche Penske crew of André Lotterer, Laurens Vanthoor and Kévin

Estresecured the drivers’ title despite finishing 10th after two penalties in the final hour. Their title was unaffected by these setbacks, as their closest rivals, the #50 Ferrari AF Corse, managed only 11th place, and the #7 Toyota driven by Kamui Kobayashi, Mike Conway and Nyck de Vries retired mid-race.

The #6 wa the only team to achieve two wins this season, in Qatar and Fuji, with Lotterer celebrating his second FIA WEC title in what was his final race as a Porsche factory driver.

In LMGT3, the #55 VISTA AF Corse Ferrari claimed its first win of the season. Alessio Rovera executed a thrilling move to take the lead after a tense fight against the #81 TF Sport Corvette and Iron Dames Lamborghini. Rovera held off a late charge

from Eastwood in the #81 Corvette (shared by Eastwood with Rui Andrade and Tom van Rompuy), securing the victory for himself and teammates François Hériau and Simon Mann.

TF Sport achieved its best weekend of the season as its second car, the #82 Corvette driven by Daniel Juncadella, Hiroshi Koizumi and Sébastien Baud, took third place after recovering from an early penalty for contact with the race-winning #8 Toyota. The remainder of the top six included the Iron Lynx Lamborghini in fourth, the #91 Manthey EMA Porsche in fifth and the #59 United Autosports McLaren in sixth.

The Aston Martin THOR Team that will take the British ultra-luxury performance brand back into the fight to win the 24 Hours of Le Mans outright for the first time since 1959, has named the first two drivers in its line-up for the 2025 FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC), Alex Riberas of Spain and Harry Tincknell from the UK.

The driver pairing for Audi’s entry into Formula 1 in 2026 has been set. One of the most promising talents for the future will represent the four rings in the pinnacle of motorsport: Brazilian Gabriel Bortoleto, 20, will drive alongside German Nico Hülkenberg, 37, for Stake F1 Team Kick Sauber next year, which will transform into the Audi F1 factory team in 2026.

The Cure Songs of a Lost World

What’s the story?

Songs of a Lost World, the 14th studio album from the Cure, might just be unprecedented. The statistical circumstances surrounding the album are unique: this is the first completely new material from an influential band in 16 years, arriving about five years after it was initially scheduled, and after the group had been regularly playing some of the songs at their consistently popular concerts for years. It’s not the typical release schedule, even for a legacy act.

Worth a listen?

The eight songs that make up Songs of a Lost World aspire to and often reach the same slow-moving grandeur of the Cure’s high-water mark album, 1989’s Disintegration. Themes of loss, isolation, impermanence and mortality are all translated into Robert Smith’s signature melodic melancholia, all of it delivered in deep, drawn-out, sweeping movements. The nearly seven-minute opener Alone sets the pace, with dense swirls of synths, simple, pounding drums and the kind of lengthy building intro that the band perfected on some of their best songs. It’s a solid three minutes before Smith starts singing, but the arrangement creates an atmosphere that’s hard not to get lost in. It’s a win against slim odds that the band would make a solid, listenable album almost 50 years in, and with almost 20 of those passing since their last new set of songs. It’s a new chapter late in the game so unexpectedly powerful that it’s nothing short of stunning.

Although recognised as one of the greatest songwriters of all time, Willie Nelson is a master interpreter who can make any song his own, which is why his covers albums, like 2024’s poignantly rustic Last Leaf on the Tree, are often his most affecting. Nelson brings an immense gravitas and pathos to these performances with his trademark light vocal warble, punctuated by just a hint of aged grit.

A fun and frenetic RPG.

In previous games, a player’s preceding world state was imported from save files or the web application Dragon Age Keep; Veilguard instead allows players to customise the world state during the game’s character creation. Players are able to remake their Inquisitor from Dragon Age: Inquisition with many characters from previous games woven into the new game. During character creation, players can choose a lineage for their player character (human, dwarf, elf or qunari), a fighting class (rogue, mage or warrior), and a character backstory with one of six faction associations. The game’s combat has changed from turn-based action to real-time action RPG elements.

The Maldives a tropical haven of powdery white beaches, crystal-clear lagoons and vibrant coral reefs has long been a dream destination for travellers. On a recent trip to two of the Maldives’ premier resorts, Muna Yousef experienced the intimate, secluded elegance of boutique islands and vibrant luxury of all-inclusive five-star resorts.

With its idyllic setting and luxurious resorts, the Maldives is the perfect place for anyone seeking a tranquil escape, exhilarating adventures or an indulgent holiday. Here’s how two of Maldives’ resorts elevated my experience even further:

After a scenic 50-minute boat ride from Malé, I arrived at the OBLU Select Sangeli and was immediately greeted by the staff with refreshing drinks and cool towels. The setting was simply breathtaking: crystal-clear waters, powder-soft beaches and stunning villas set the scene for a luxurious stay.

The Stay

OBLU Select Sangeli’s range of elegant villas and suites are designed with modern touches while preserving the island’s natural beauty. The resort features two main types of accommodations: Water and Beach Villas as well as exotic Honeymoon Villas. I stayed in an Overwater Villa with a private pool and could step right off the private deck into the ocean for a swim, snorkel or simply enjoy the tranquility of my surroundings.

The villa was spacious with large windows that offered panoramic views of the lagoon. For those who prefer to have their toes in the sand, the beachside villas are an excellent choice. These offer private gardens, outdoor terraces, direct access to the beach and the soothing sounds of the waves.

Dining

One of the standout features of OBLU Select Sangeli is its unique premium holiday plan The Serenity Plan, which offers guests an allinclusive package to enjoy a range of meals, beverages and activities without worrying about the additional costs.

Dining at OBLU is an experience in itself. The all-day dining restaurant, The Courtyard, offers a lively buffet with everything from fresh seafood to international comfort foods. And located on the adults-only island One Banyan are Just Grill, with fresh seafood and meat grills, as well as JustWok – a contemporary Pan Asian restaurant that blew my mind with its scrumptious wok-tossed delicacies, aromatic soups and handmade dim sums.

Activities

With the resort located near some of the Maldives’ most pristine coral reefs, I thoroughly enjoyed guided snorkeling tours. The coast is teeming with marine life, including vibrant corals, tropical fish and even the occasional turtle. Other activities, like paddleboarding and island hopping, provide a golden opportunity to explore the surrounding waters. One of my most memorable moments was a sunset fishing cruise, where we ended up seeing some nursing sharks and, as we sailed along the island’s coastline, watched the sun dip below the horizon – truly breathtaking.

OBLU Select Sangeli’s stunning spa, ELE|NA Spa offers a range of rejuvenating treatments, from traditional Maldivian therapies to modern wellness rituals. I enjoyed a therapeutic massage that melted the jet lag away, all while listening to the gentle sound of the waves.

A Secluded Escape

The domestic flight from Malé to Raaya by Atmosphere was an exciting experience as I was treated to a bird’s eye view of the stunning colours of the Maldivian waters! The first thing that struck me about the resort was the sense of serenity; it’s an escape from the outside world.

For people like me, who enjoy an engaging island lifestyle, this island encourages outdoor fun, nature exploration and immersive experiences for all. I opted for a manta ray snorkeling trip and to my delight spotted a squadron of manta rays gliding through the water.

The resort’s water sports offerings, from kayaking to paddleboarding, provided the perfect way to explore the lagoon’s crystalclear waters. I also took a delightful walk through the island’s mangrove forests and climbed up the watchtowers to get a view across stretches of the island. During a spot of rain, I built and decorated a model Dhoni – a traditional Maldivian boat. So much fun!

For those looking for a truly relaxing experience, the ELE|NA Spa offers indulgent treatments designed to rejuvenate body and mind. I experienced a deep tissue massage that left me in a divinely relaxed state.
