RAISING THE BAR FOR EDUCATION
The Canadian School Bahrain (CSB), which opened its doors in 2019, has carved a unique space in the Kingdom’s highly-competitive education sector with its focus on fostering a lifelong love of learning through its British Columbia Canada curriculum. Fresh from launching the school’s exciting High School Graduate Programme, CSB’s Academic Principal, Abby Saadeh, spoke to Bahrain This Month about this exciting development at the state-of-the-art campus in Diyar al Muharraq.
Mrs. Saadeh, congratulations on the continued success of CSB! Could you give our readers a brief insight into your professional experience in the field of academics?
This is my 24th year in education. I started my career as a teacher and moved into leadership in the last 15 years, with my most recent position as the Academic Principal at the Canadian School Bahrain since 2019.
CSB is the first certified BC offshore school in Bahrain and has reinvigorated its private education sector. How has the response and interest in CSB’s offerings been since the school first opened its doors?
We’ve been delighted by the community’s response. Parents in Bahrain recognise the need for forward-thinking education that is based on an understanding that our world has changed and education also needs to
adapt to our future. This is an exciting time for education and we are happy to be one of the leaders in this transformation. Our school’s population has grown well beyond our expectations in response to our school’s innovative programming.
What can you tell us about the British Columbia High School Graduate Programme and which grades will the programme cover in 2024-2025?
The programme offers students a flexible educational experience based on their interests and future goals. It has a variety of elective courses and personalised learning plans where students can develop critical thinking, communication and problem-solving skills through inquiry-based learning. The curriculum emphasises digital literacy and global citizenship, ensuring students are prepared for their future.
A strength of the BC programme is its strong
connection to post-secondary education. The curriculum is recognised globally for its rigour, aligning closely with university expectations and preparing students for higher education in Canada and internationally. BC also offers dual credit programmes, allowing students to earn both high school and university credits
at the same time, giving them a head start in their post-secondary education journey. This transition from high school to university ensures that BC graduates are well-equipped for future academic and career success.
The beauty of the BC curriculum is that we can blend the programme with the requirements of the Bahraini Ministry of Education. Our students learn Arabic, Islamic Studies, Bahraini Citizenship and Social Studies, which is integrated into the syllabus in various ways.
This year we are opening Grade 10, which is our first year of the programme, and we will open another grade each year until we reach Grade 12.
What sets CSB’s High School Programme apart from others available in Bahrain?
Unlike the more standardised systems, BC’s curriculum allows students to tailor their education to their interests and career aspirations through a wide selection of elective courses and personalised learning plans. This flexibility enables students to explore diverse fields, such as the arts, sciences, technology and engineering, while still meeting graduation requirements.
CSB has a wide range of extra-curricular activities and facilities. What can you tell us about these activities, and will they be integrated into the new High School Programme?
For extracurricular activities, CSB provides a wide variety of options including clubs focused on technology like the Reboot Innovative Coding Institute, which immerses students in the world of technology, and our robotics and engineering course. The school also emphasises community service, with initiatives like the Handby Hand Club, and supports leadership development and entrepreneurship among students. Furthermore, our Equestrian Centre offers a horse-riding programme throughout high school.
What changes do you foresee in the existing school culture with the integration of a high school?
With the addition of a high school, the academic environment at CSB will likely become more focused on college preparation and advanced learning opportunities. The introduction of higherlevel courses, such as those leading to the Dogwood graduation certificate (a British Columbia high school diploma), will promote academic expectations and standards.
Now that our students are moving into high school, it gives the school an opportunity to introduce a number of new initiatives. It gives our high school students more leadership responsibilities amongst the younger students and also within community projects. The younger students will now see where they are heading in their future and the exciting programmes that they will get to partake in as they move into high school. I believe that attending the same school from early childhood through to graduation will also strengthen school traditions and identity.
Will CSB accept new admissions, from Bahrain-based schools and otherwise, directly into the High School Programme?
We’re always excited to welcome new students to our community! While our curriculum is closely aligned with the British Columbia system, which builds progressively from earlier grades, we understand that every student’s journey is unique. Because of this, we typically review applications on a case-by-case basis after Grade 10 to ensure the best fit for both the student and our programme. We encourage you to reach out so we can explore the possibilities together!
How will faculty members ensure that graduates of this programme are then able to successfully integrate into the university of their choice?
Faculty members at CSB ensure that graduates are well-prepared for university by
offering academic counselling that focuses on aligning students’ course selections with their university choices. They will provide targeted support for standardised testing, application processes, and help develop the necessary skills required for higher education. The curriculum ensures that students meet global standards, making our students competitive candidates for universities around the world.
Is there anything else you would like to add?
We are really looking forward to leading our students through Bahrain’s first British Columbia Canada graduation and I can’t wait to celebrate our first BC graduates in 2028!

LAYING THE GROUNDWORK FOR STRONGER RELATIONS
Bahrain and Malaysia have had a long-standing diplomatic partnership, which is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year. His Excellency Shazryll Zahiran, the Malaysian Ambassador to Bahrain, spoke exclusively to Kristian Harrison to shed light on the evolving bilateral relations between the two nations, with a particular focus on how Bahrain is positioned as a gateway for Malaysian businesses and the Embassy’s plans to celebrate the Golden Jubilee.
Your Excellency, thank you for joining us. Could you start by sharing your diplomatic journey?
Firstly, I’d like to say thank you to Bahrain This Month for having me. You have always been a great partner of the embassy and supported a lot of our activities, so it is an honour to be interviewed again and I express my sincere gratitude.
DIPLOMATIC PARTNERSHIP ANNIVERSARY
I’ve served in the diplomatic field for 26 years, starting as the First Secretary and Head of Chancellery in Bosnia-Herzegovina. My career has taken me to various roles, including Consul General in Ho Chi Minh City, Deputy Director General of the South East Asia Regional Centre for Counter-Terrorism and then for Policy and Management. Now I am honoured to become the fifth Malaysian Ambassador to Bahrain. I arrived here in 2021, just as the world was transitioning out of the pandemic. These three years have been significant, especially as we celebrate 50 years of diplomatic relations between Malaysia and Bahrain.
Speaking of the 50th anniversary, how have the relations between Malaysia and Bahrain evolved over these five decades?
It’s been a remarkable journey. Malaysia has been closely involved in Bahrain’s development, particularly in infrastructure projects like the Bahrain International Circuit and the Bahrain World Trade Centre. Our diplomatic ties have strengthened over the years, marked by high-level visits, starting with our Prime Minister’s visit in 2001. The establishment of our embassy in 2003 further solidified our relationship. Today, our
relations are robust, with both nations committed to deepening our economic and cultural ties.
What initiatives have you undertaken to promote Malaysian culture here?
We’ve launched several cultural initiatives, such as the first Malaysian Film Festival in Bahrain, which highlighted our cinematic achievements and fostered understanding through storytelling. We also partnered with the Alia Rehabilitation Centre to support children with special needs. Looking ahead, we plan to organise a Malaysia Fair in November, which will showcase Malaysian products, culture and traditions in order to bring a comprehensive cultural experience to Bahrain.
What would you consider your most significant achievement as Ambassador?
My tenure started in the challenging post-COVID era, when many Malaysians had left Bahrain after completing major projects. One of my goals was to reengage Malaysians with Bahrain and vice versa. I’m proud to say we’ve made progress, conducting over 15 engagements with Malaysian private sectors to promote Bahrain. We’ve also facilitated connections between Bahraini and Malaysian businesses, particularly in the small and medium enterprises (SME) sector, which I believe holds great potential for both nations.
How does the embassy support Malaysian citizens and businesses in Bahrain?
We provide extensive support, especially on consular matters, and
assist Malaysian businesses exploring opportunities in Bahrain. Although the number of Malaysians in Bahrain has decreased to under 1,000 residents due to the completion of a number of big projects, those who remain are professionals contributing significantly in sectors like engineering, healthcare and architecture. We also ensure that Bahraini businesses interested in Malaysia receive proper guidance and validation of their ventures. Our role extends beyond bilateral relations, as we also advocate for ASEAN interests, given Malaysia’s integral role in the region.
With Malaysia set to chair ASEAN next year, what can we expect in terms of regional collaboration?
Chairing ASEAN is a significant responsibility, and we aim to introduce new modalities and structures to enhance diplomatic and economic ties within the region. We’re committed to fostering prosperity in collaboration with our neighbours and ensuring that both ASEAN and Bahrain benefit from these strengthened relations.
How do you position Bahrain as an attractive destination for Malaysian businesses, particularly in comparison to other regional players?
Bahrain offers a unique set of advantages that make it an appealing destination for Malaysian businesses. The country’s financial structure, tax benefits and excellent facilities are all key factors. But what truly sets Bahrain apart is its stability. A stable government is the most crucial factor for businesses when considering international expansion. Bahrain’s relationships within the region, particularly with Saudi Arabia, the UAE and Qatar, further enhance its appeal. Being an island nation, Bahrain also offers something special in terms of regional connectivity, serving as a gateway to the GCC.
Additionally, Bahrain’s pioneering spirit, as evidenced by being the first in many sectors like education, aviation and oil discovery, makes it a compelling place for Malaysian businesses to establish a foothold in the Middle East.
What are some specific sectors where you see potential for economic collaboration between Malaysia and Bahrain?
There are several promising sectors for collaboration, particularly in food security and agriculture, where Bahrain is keen on innovation and development. Additionally, renewable energy presents significant opportunities, especially considering Bahrain’s ambitious strategic plans for the next 35 years. Other areas include AI, IT development and security. While the trade balance between Malaysia and Bahrain is modest,
standing at USD256 million there’s ample room for growth, particularly in these highpotential sectors.
Can you elaborate on how Bahrainis and Malaysians can work together to enhance economic relations?
It’s crucial that this collaboration is a twoway street. While I can promote Bahrain to Malaysian businesses, it’s equally important for Bahrainis to reach out to potential partners in Malaysia. Face-toface interactions, productive discussions and showcasing Bahrain’s strengths are essential. Both sides must be willing to engage, exchange ideas and explore opportunities together.
As you approach the end of your tenure, what do you hope will be your legacy in Bahrain?
I don’t see it as leaving behind a legacy, but rather as reigniting opportunities that had lain dormant. Despite the challenges, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic, I believe we’ve laid the groundwork for stronger economic relations. The interest in Bahrain as a gateway to the Middle East is growing among Malaysian businesses, especially in the case of SMEs which I believe truly hold the key to Bahrain’s future prosperity. My hope is that my successor will build on this momentum and continue to strengthen the ties between our nations, ensuring that the fruits of our labour will be harvested in the years to come.
What advice would you give to your successor?
My advice would be to capture the opportunities that are now emerging. The groundwork has been laid, and it’s up to my successor to continue fostering these relationships. It’s important to remain committed to updating and developing new Memoranda of Understanding (MOUs) that reflect our evolving partnership. The role of an ambassador is to continuously build on what has been achieved, ensuring that the relationship between Malaysia and Bahrain continues to flourish.
Finally, what message do you have for Malaysians in Bahrain?
This is a joyous time for Malaysians, as we recently celebrated our National Day on August 31 and Malaysia Day is set to take place on September 16. My message is simply to embody the positive values that our nation stands for. It’s important for Malaysians here to be ambassadors of our culture and values, to work hand-in-hand with Bahrainis, and to continue sharing the richness of our society.

REINVIGORATING DIPLOMATIC RELATIONS
With a career spanning three decades, Swiss Ambassador to the UAE and Bahrain, HE Arthur Mattli, brings a wealth of experience from various regions. In his first exclusive interview since receiving his credentials from His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, he takes Kristian Harrison on a deep dive into the nuances of diplomacy, the challenges and opportunities ahead, and his aspirations for fostering stronger ties between Switzerland and Bahrain.
Your Excellency, welcome to Bahrain. Could you start by telling us about your diplomatic career and how it has led you to your current position?
Thank you for having me. I began my diplomatic career 30 years ago, starting in our capital, Bern, before being deployed to the Swiss Mission to the European Union. Although Switzerland is not a member of the EU, our economic ties are so close that it’s crucial to have that experience. After that, I learned Chinese and was deployed to Beijing, where I headed the economic section of our embassy. Over the years, I’ve served in various regions, including Africa as the Deputy Ambassador to Kenya and then Asia in the same role in India. I went back to Bern as Assistant Secretary of State for Europe, Central Asia, Council of Europe and OSCE.
From there I went back to East Africa with a stint in Tanzania, before moving to Romania and now finally the UAE, where I am based at the embassy whilst also performing my ambassadorial duties for Bahrain.
How do you manage the dynamic of covering two different countries?
It’s indeed a unique setup, but one that works well. We have a Swiss Honorary Consul here in Bahrain who assists with immediate matters. Additionally, there are frequent direct flights between Abu Dhabi and Bahrain, making it easy for me to travel here whenever necessary. In fact, sometimes it’s quicker to reach Bahrain from Abu Dhabi than to travel within the UAE! This allows me to maintain a strong presence in both countries and address any issues that may arise promptly.
How would you describe the current state of bilateral relations between Switzerland and Bahrain?
If I were to conduct a diplomatic health check, I would say our relations are very good. They are longstanding and continue to be very relevant. His Majesty King Hamad has expressed his fondness for Switzerland, which reflects the strong personal ties between our nations. Economically, both countries share a commitment to financial excellence and renewable energy, particularly in the post-COP28 era. We also share similar concerns about climate change, with Bahrain facing rising sea levels and Switzerland experiencing the melting of glaciers. These shared challenges provide a foundation for deeper cooperation.
Speaking of climate change and renewable energy, what can Switzerland offer Bahrain in these areas, and viceversa?
The key lies in combining finance with environmental concerns, which we refer to as green finance. Never before in human history have we had so much money available for green projects. The challenge now is finding sufficient bankable green projects to fund. We need to work together to develop these projects, ensuring they are viable for both public and private investment. In Switzerland, for example, we’ve moved from landfills to zero-waste incinerators, which not only generate energy but also recover valuable materials like gold and copper. We can share this technology and expertise with Bahrain to help address waste management challenges.
What are your short-term and longterm goals for your ambassadorship in Bahrain?
In the short term, I aim to identify and assist with areas where Switzerland can offer its expertise, such as waste management. For example, I recently met with Bahrain’s Minister of Municipalities and Agriculture to discuss our zero-waste incineration technology that I have just mentioned. In the long term, I hope to foster stronger economic ties by attracting Swiss small and mediumsized enterprises (SMEs) to invest in Bahrain. Switzerland has a strong SME sector, and bringing these top-edge companies to Bahrain could greatly benefit the local economy.
What do you foresee as your greatest challenge during your tenure?
Attracting those SMEs to Bahrain will likely be the biggest challenge. Over 90 percent of Swiss industries are SMEs, and they are highly innovative and technologically advanced. The challenge is creating an ecosystem in Bahrain that is attractive to these companies, enabling them to invest and thrive here. If we can achieve that, it would be a significant accomplishment.
Can you provide an overview of the current trade relationship between Bahrain and Switzerland?
Currently, Switzerland exports about USD322 million worth of goods to Bahrain annually, while Bahrain exports approximately USD38 million to Switzerland. The main Swiss exports to Bahrain include jewellery, watches, pharmaceuticals and machinery. On the other hand, Bahrain exports gemstones and jewellery to Switzerland. While there is a trade imbalance, our goal is to create a more balanced relationship by increasing Bahrain’s exports to Switzerland, particularly in sectors where Bahrain has a competitive edge.
Cultural exchange and tourism are also important aspects of diplomacy. How do you plan to promote Swiss culture and tourism in Bahrain?
I’m fortunate to have a Swiss tourism promotion office in Dubai that also covers Bahrain. They work closely with local tour operators to promote Switzerland as a tourist destination. We are seeing increasing numbers of tourists from Bahrain and the wider Gulf region. On the cultural side, I recently had a fruitful meeting with the President of the Bahrain Authority for Culture and Antiquities, Shaikh Khalifa bin Ahmed Al Khalifa. Bahrain has a rich cultural heritage spanning a number of civilisations that can be further developed and promoted, not just through large museums but also through smaller, human-sized attractions that resonate with tourists’ curiosity and love for discovery.
What message would you like to send to the Swiss community in Bahrain?
I have already reached out to the Swiss community here and plan to continue doing so. It’s important for me to meet with them, listen to their stories and understand their experiences. I see my role as not just a representative of Switzerland but also as a supporter of the Swiss community abroad. I encourage them to share their successes and challenges with me so that I can assist them in any way possible.
Finally, is there anything else you’d like to add?
I would love to see more development in maritime tourism in the region. Bahrain has a rich history of sailing and connectivity through its waters, whether through fishing, pearling or otherwise, and I believe there is great potential to attract tourists with experiences centred on this maritime heritage. Why not offer sea tours on dhows or create a maritime museum? It’s an area that is not yet fully explored, but one that I think could be very appealing, especially to Swiss tourists who appreciate such unique cultural experiences.

Reinventing A Culture of Sound
The music scene in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has grown exponentially in recent years. Meshal ‘MESH (SA)’ Alluqman, is a music producer and performer from Saudi Arabia, who started his music career in Bahrain in 2018. He tells Farah Baig about his thoughts on the scene and his journey with electronic music.
Meshal Alluqman, who works in the mechanical industry by day, is known across the electronic dance music scene in Saudi Arabia and Bahrain. With a blend of Saudi and Egyptian influences forming his cultural background, he was exposed to a range of musical elements which naturally found their way into his work. Today, his tracks and sets create a musical experience that transcends typical genre boundaries.
“It brings a unique perspective to my music, infusing traditional elements, rhythms, sounds and vocals with modern electronic sounds. This evolution has led me to develop a distinctive signature in my electronic compositions that resonates with the local scene and has a universal appeal,” says MESH.
“My artistic mission is to push beyond the conventional limits of electronic music, immersing listeners in a diverse and unique experience, all backed by my expertise in music production, sound design and engineering,” he adds.
It is this unique sound that has garnered him attention not only in the Middle East but abroad too with him performing at a range of prominent events and festivals including one of the world’s largest festivals, Amsterdam Dance Event (ADE 2023) and an exciting upcoming return at ADE 2024.
“I’ve also taken the stage in various cities across Germany, Egypt, Amsterdam and Ibiza, alongside industry luminaries such as Innellea, Øostil, Alar, Massano, Armonica, Axl Stace, Helen&Boys, Nihil Young, Black Box, D-Formation, The Yellowheads, Juliet Fox, Cattaree, Martin Mind, 39 Kingdom and more,” he says.
Sharing his thoughts on the nightlife and electronic music scene in Saudi Arabia and Bahrain, he says: “It’s definitely evolving. It’s exciting to
see the growth, but it’s also crucial for us — myself and others in the community — to come together to ensure it continues to move in the right direction.”
Contributing to the growing scene is MESH’s brainchild, KUBE, which was started in Bahrain and embodies his vision and passion for electronic music. KUBE’s mission is clear: to become a leading electronic music label and entertainment brand.
“We’re dedicated to delivering exceptional experiences through music releases, event production, artist management and innovative creative solutions. KUBE is more than just a label; it’s a platform for artistic expression and a hub for connecting with like-minded individuals who share a love for electronic music,” he explains.
Looking ahead, his goal is to become a leading creator of electronic music in the region while representing the global scene. He believes that several upcoming projects and collaborations will help him to push his creative boundaries and connect with new audiences to achieve this.
Ultimately, MESH’s journey in electronic music is a labour of love.
“It didn’t start with a single moment but rather with a deep-rooted passion that has grown over time. It’s been a combination of relentless hard work, dedication and commitment to the craft. From the beginning, I’ve been driven by a love for electronic music, and it’s that passion that has propelled me forward,” he says.
“If I had just one piece of advice for aspiring producers in Saudi Arabia and Bahrain, it would be this: Believe in yourself and follow your dreams. Nothing is impossible.”

BUYING ON A BUDGET
When it comes to purchasing a vehicle, breaking the bank is not a necessity. In today’s market, the challenge lies in finding a car that strikes the perfect balance between affordability and quality. With an array of economical options available in Bahrain, from compact cars to premium used models, buyers have the opportunity to make smart choices without compromising on reliability, safety or aesthetics.
This feature explores the Kingdom’s budget-friendly vehicles, offering insights into the best options for those looking to drive off with value for money. Whether you’re a first-time buyer or someone seeking an economical second car, our guide will help you navigate the road to owning a vehicle that meets both your financial and practical needs.
THE DOS AND DON’TS
of Buying a Car on a Budget
Buying a car can be stressful. Whether you’re a young professional seeking your first car or a family looking to replace an old vehicle, finding an economical option that doesn’t compromise on quality is essential. There’s a lot of choice, possibly too much of it, and there are many factors which can add to your anxiety. This month, we have a special feature on economy motoring in the Kingdom and below, Kristian Harrison discusses the do’s and don’ts for buying a car on a budget.
Do: Determine Your Budget
The first step in buying a car on a budget is knowing how much you can afford to spend. This doesn’t just mean the sticker price of the car, but also the associated costs, such as insurance, registration, maintenance and fuel. Setting a clear budget will prevent you from overspending and help you focus on options within your financial reach. It’s advisable to consider your monthly income and expenses to determine a realistic budget. Remember to leave room for unexpected costs that may arise post-purchase, like repairs or upgrades.
Don’t: Rush the Decision
Buying a car is a significant investment, so it’s important not to rush the decision. Take your time to research different models, compare prices and consider the longterm costs associated with each option. It’s easy to get excited about the first car that catches your eye, but patience can save you from making a hasty decision that you might regret later. Visit multiple dealerships, ask for test drives and read reviews to ensure that you are making an informed choice.
Do: Prioritise Your Needs
When buying on a budget, it’s crucial to prioritise your needs over your wants. While it might be tempting to go for the latest model with all the bells and whistles, focusing on the essentials can help you stay within your budget. Think about what you really need in a car – is it fuel efficiency, low maintenance costs or a spacious interior? By prioritising these key factors, you can avoid unnecessary expenses and choose a vehicle that suits your lifestyle without stretching your finances.
Don’t: Ignore Used Cars
New cars might be alluring, but used cars can offer tremendous value for budget-conscious buyers. A well-maintained used car can provide years of reliable service at a fraction of the cost of a new one. When considering a used car, it’s important to do your homework – check the vehicle’s history, mileage and condition. It’s also a good idea to have a trusted mechanic inspect the car before finalising the purchase to ensure there are no hidden issues. Certified preowned cars from dealerships often come with warranties, adding an extra layer of security to your purchase.
Do: Consider Total Ownership Costs
The initial price of the car is just one part of the equation. Total ownership costs, including fuel efficiency, insurance premiums, maintenance and repair costs, should all be considered when buying a car on a budget. Some cars may have a low purchase price but could be expensive to insure or maintain. Research the long-term costs associated with the models you are interested in and choose one that offers the best balance of purchase price and ongoing expenses.
Don’t: Overlook Financing Options
If you’re not paying for the car in cash, financing will be a crucial part of your purchase
process. Don’t just accept the first loan offer you receive; shop around to find the best interest rates and terms. Lower interest rates can significantly reduce the total amount you’ll pay over the life of the loan. It’s also important to consider the loan term – while longer terms may lower your monthly payments, they can increase the total cost due to interest. Always calculate the full cost of the loan and ensure it fits within your budget.
Do: Negotiate
Negotiation is a key part of the car-buying process, especially when you’re on a budget. Don’t be afraid to haggle over the price –dealerships often have some wiggle room, especially on used cars. Be polite but firm, and know when to walk away if the deal isn’t right. It’s also worth negotiating extras like extended warranties or free maintenance services. Doing so can save you money in the long run and make the deal even more appealing.
Don’t: Fall for Sales Tactics
Salespeople are trained to upsell and encourage buyers to make decisions that benefit the dealership. While many salespeople are honest and helpful, some may use highpressure tactics to get you to buy a more expensive car or add-ons you don’t need. Stay firm on your budget and priorities, and don’t be swayed by offers that seem too good to be true. It’s also important to thoroughly read any contracts or agreements before signing to ensure there are no hidden fees or terms.
Do: Check for Discounts and Incentives
Manufacturers and dealerships often offer discounts, incentives or rebates that can make buying a car more affordable. These might include seasonal promotions, cashback offers or special financing deals. Keep an eye out for these opportunities and don’t hesitate to ask the dealership about any current promotions.
Taking advantage of these incentives can reduce the overall cost of the vehicle and make your budget stretch further.
Don’t: Forget About the Test Drive
A car might look perfect on paper, but the test drive is where you’ll truly discover if it’s the right fit for you. During the test drive, pay attention to how the car handles, the comfort of the ride, and any unusual noises or issues. Test drives are also an opportunity to evaluate the car’s features and ensure they meet your needs. If possible, test drive multiple cars to compare how they feel and perform. This will give you a better sense of what you like and what to avoid.
Do: Plan for Future Needs
While your immediate goal might be to buy a budget-friendly car, it’s important to consider your future needs as well. If you’re planning to start a family or anticipate having more, then that two-door sports car isn’t for you.
Don’t: Skip the Paperwork
Once you’ve chosen your car, ensure all the paperwork is in order. Double-check the contract, warranty details and any financing agreements. Make sure you understand all the terms and conditions before signing, as this will protect you from unexpected costs or disputes in the future.

POWER, STYLE AND UNMATCHED COMFORT!
The Hyundai Santa Fe has undergone a drastic redesign for 2024, combining economy with elegance. Kristian Harrison was given the opportunity to take it for a spin to see how this latest SUV blends style, comfort and efficiency on Bahrain’s roads.
Muchlike its namesake in the deserts of New Mexico, the new Santa Fe feels ready made for driving in our very own Arabian desert. Whether it’s a family outing on the bumpy roads to the Tree of Life or cruising along the pristine highways of Bahrain Bay, this suave motor will get you there in comfort and style.
The fifth generation of Santa Fe, making its debut in the region thanks to its exclusive dealer First Motors, is already turning heads and with good reason. With a bolder design, a longer wheelbase and a promise of premium cosiness, this SUV is tailored for both city slickers and adventurers alike.
Let’s talk first impressions – because, with the Santa Fe, they matter. Its high bonnet, box-like rear and sharply defined wings create a commanding presence, perfect for those who like to make an entrance. The H-shaped headlamps add a unique touch that you won’t find in your neighbour’s SUV. And those 21-inch wheels? They’re not just for show; they scream robustness, ready to take on Bahrain’s endless medley of speed bumps and sandy roads.
One of the standout features I enjoyed is its driverless start with the key fob. Imagine this: you’re in a packed car park, the sun is blazing, and your car is squeezed into a tight spot. With just a press and hold of a button on the key fob, you can bring the Santa Fe forward or backward without even stepping inside. This feature is not only a lifesaver for navigating those narrow parking spaces but also a perfect way to cool off before getting behind the wheel.
Now, about that interior – Hyundai seems to have outdone itself. Imagine a terracelike living space on wheels, where even the third-row passengers get a view worth writing
home about. Whether you’re ferrying the kids to school or escaping for a weekend getaway, the Santa Fe’s spaciousness means you’ll never hear complaints about legroom. And with features like a UV-C Sterilisation Tray and dual wireless charging, Hyundai is proving that luxury doesn’t have to come with a hefty price tag.
But here’s where the Santa Fe really earns its stripes when it comes to Economy Motoring. It’s not just about what’s on the outside or even the inside, it’s about what’s under the bonnet. The 2024 model comes with two powertrain options: a gasoline 2.5-litre engine and a 2.5-litre turbocharged engine. Both options promise a blend of power and efficiency that’s ideal for the eco-conscious driver. Whether it’s rush hour traffic or quiet weekend cruises, the Santa Fe is built to keep your fuel stops few and far between. Safety isn’t just an afterthought here either; it’s a priority. The Santa Fe comes packed with a suite of safety features that will have you feeling secure no matter where the road takes you. With Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist 2, Lane Following Assist 2, and Radarbased Rear Occupant Alert, Hyundai has your back (and front, and sides) covered.
So, what’s the verdict? If you’re looking for a vehicle that marries the practicality of economy motoring with the allure of modern luxury, the 2024 Hyundai Santa Fe is worth a test drive at the very least.

FORD RANGER DOORS SLAMMED MORE THAN 100,000 TIMES TO ENSURE THEY CAN WITHSTAND YEARS OF PUNISHMENT
“If you use your Ranger for work, family or play, then you’ll know the hard life lived by the door of your vehicle,” says Tim Griffiths, test engineer of Ford Australia. That’s why Ford slams the front and rear doors on its Ranger more than 100,000 times to simulate a decade of hard use in the hands of customers.
“The door slam test is as demanding as anything the rest of the vehicle experiences during development; we open and close the front and rear doors in temperatures ranging from a colder than cold minus 40-degrees Celsius to a piping hot 80-degrees Celsius,” says Griffiths.
Using two internal and two external automated hydraulic arms, Ford simulates 10 years of use and abuse over the course of a month with testing running day and night. To ensure all closure techniques are covered, from soft to hard, the speed of the door closure is varied.
As if that doesn’t sound rigorous enough, Ford applies a special ‘gritty’ spray to vehicle parts to simulate outback and coastal conditions. “Rest assured, if it opens and shuts, we’ve tested it to Built Ford Tough standards,” concludes Griffiths.
ASTON MARTIN VANTAGE GT3 CHASING GLORY IN FIA WORLD ENDURANCE CHAMPIONSHIP
Aston Martin made a racing return to the Circuit of the Americas (COTA) and the Lone Star Le Mans 6 hours race – the scene of extraordinary success for Vantage in the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) – as the newest Vantage GT3 took its Texas bow in the hands of partner teams The Heart of Racing (THoR) and D’station Racing, last month.
No other manufacturer boasts such a tremendous victory tally at the Austin venue, which returned to the WEC calendar for the first time since 2020 when Aston Martin also recorded a double-class victory. Indeed, the British ultraluxury sportscar brand has achieved no less than nine GT class wins in the six events COTA has staged since the series was formed in 2012. That’s a 75 percent win ratio, and four of those triumphs were double-class victories.

The Epitome of Grandeur
The Bentley Bentayga EWB Azure is more than just a car; it’s a statement on wheels. Kristian Harrison had the privilege of taking this magnificent machine for a spin around Bahrain and experience Bentley’s unparalleled style and comfort.
Throughout my career, I’ve had the pleasure of driving many cars great and small from across the world. However, I had yet to tick Bentley off my bucket list of marques, so what better day to do it than my birthday and create a memory that will last a lifetime? That’s exactly what happened with the Bentayga EWB (Extended Wheelbase) Azure with Mulliner spec.
This model stretches the concept of luxury to new lengths – literally. With an extra 180mm added to the wheelbase, they Bentayga EWB is all about giving rear passengers the space they deserve. And what better way to fill that space than with Bentley’s innovative Airliner Seats? Inspired by first-class airline travel, these seats are a masterpiece of comfort, offering 22-way adjustability, a seat cushion that senses pressure points and makes adjustments to keep you comfortable, and even a postural adjustment system that subtly shifts your position to reduce fatigue. If you want a sip of the high life, there’s also a cooler and two crystal glass flutes in the centre.
The rest of the cabin feels like a mountain retreat sanctuary than car. As you settle in, you’ll notice the soft close doors which glide smoothly into place with just the gentlest push. And if you’re in the rear, you can even close them with a press of a button rather than an awkward stretch to grab the handle.
The interior showcases Bentley’s craftsmanship at its finest. The wood veneers are particularly impressive. All the wood furnishings in the cabin come from the same piece of wood, ensuring that the grain flows seamlessly from one panel to the next. It’s a detail that speaks volumes about Bentley’s commitment to perfection.
But let’s not forget that the Bentayga is also a performance machine. Under the bonnet lies a twin-turbocharged 4.0-litre V8 engine that delivers 542bhp and 770nm of torque. This means that despite its size and luxurious trappings, the Bentayga EWB Azure can still rocket from 0-100kmph in just 4.6 seconds, with a top speed of 290kmph. The handling is equally impressive, with Bentley’s Dynamic Ride system keeping the car composed
through corners, ensuring that you remain comfortable despite Bahrain’s plethora of speed bumps.
Cocooned in a blend of sumptuous materials and cutting-edge technology, the cabin is incredibly quiet thanks to the double-glazed windows and extensive soundproofing. You can truly enjoy the Naim sound system, which delivers crystal-clear audio that’s as rich as the hand-stitched leather seats.
Speaking of tech, the Bentayga EWB Azure doesn’t skimp. The infotainment system is intuitive, with a 10.9-inch display and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto so you can stay connected on the go. Rear passengers get their own touchscreen remote, which controls everything from the audio system to the seat adjustments.
As for its exterior, the Bentayga EWB Azure has an elongated profile which gives it a commanding presence on the road, while the signature diamond-in-diamond Mulliner front grille and wing vents immediately draw the eye. If that isn’t enough, the exclusive 22” directional wheels with self-levelling Bentley badges at their centres will.
With the Bentayga EWB, Bentley has crafted an SUV that not only met but exceeded my already-lofty expectations. It’s a car for those who demand the very best and aren’t afraid to indulge in it. Scan to watch the video
TRÈS MAGNIFIQUE!
As the first Krug restaurant concept in the Middle East and the fourth in the world, La Table Krug at the Ritz-Carlton, Bahrain evokes the essence of dining in a 19th-century French countryside estate, blending an intimate atmosphere with exceptional cuisine. Kristian Harrison was lucky enough to sample the exquisite taster menu created by Chef de Cuisine Alexis Knecht and reveals why the outlet is the quintessential destination for those seeking a truly refined dining experience.
From the moment you enter La Table Krug, I felt enveloped in an ambience of understated elegance. The rich burgundy fixtures illuminated by soft lamps lend the room a warm, inviting glow, while the faux fireplace adds a touch of homely comfort without compromising the sophisticated aura. A classic painted portrait of Joseph Krug, the founder of the famous sparkling grape house which lends its name to the restaurant, watches over the dining room, subtly reminding guests of the heritage and legacy behind the experience.
The dining experience at La Table Krug is meticulously curated by Chef Alexis to ensure that each course is a revelation. The evening begins with the starters – warm, freshly baked sourdough bread sprinkled with cumin seeds. The bread is served with butter that is so perfectly creamy it almost melts on contact, and it paired exquisitely with the opening salvo of the attack on our palate, a delicately light yet flavourful asparagus soup, topped with luxurious caviar.
The first of the appetisers, the Dill Cured Scottish Salmon, was presented beautifully, with vibrant colours that were almost as delightful as the taste. The wasabi added just the right amount of heat, while the beetroot and sweet apple brought a medley of earthy and sweet notes. The Foie Gras from Perigord was one of the standouts as a delicacy I’d always wished to try. I was not disappointed, with it being surprisingly light and buttery, yet incredibly rich when eaten with the balsamic-laced brioche it was placed upon.
By this point, anticipation was building for the main courses, and the Chilean Seabass Fillet was a masterpiece, cooked to perfection with a seared crust that gave way to tender, flaky fish. The roasted leeks added a sweet, mellow undertone, while the champagne sauce was light and effervescent, enhancing the dish without overpowering it.
However, it was the US Prime Beef Tenderloin that truly stole the show. Cooked mediumrare, it was so tender that it melted in my mouth, beautifully balanced by the truffled potato and the pepper sauce personally poured by Chef Alexis.
To finish, the dessert offered a sweet finale that was both indulgent and refreshing. First was the lemon sorbet, incredibly zestful, then the Chocolate Fondant, made with 70 percent dark Valrhona chocolate. The fondant’s warm, gooey centre is offset by the tartness of the passion fruit sorbet and the freshness of the raspberry, creating a balanced and memorable end to the meal.
Ultimately, every detail, from the carefully selected ingredients to the beautifully designed setting, was crafted to create an evening that will linger long in the memory. Whether you’re a connoisseur of fine dining or simply looking to indulge in an unforgettable experience, La Table Krug offers a dining adventure that is truly unparalleled.
C’est magnifique!

AN ITALIAN FEAST!
Cucina Italiana has grown to be a staunch favourite among Bahrain’s residents who love Italian food. Farah Baig shares her top recommendations following a dining experience at the quaint restaurant.
Cucina Italiana is a very short drive away from the Bahrain This Month office and has grown into a favourite for our comforting business lunches! This month around, however, I was in store for a very different dining experience.
I made my way to Juffair one evening for a fantastic dinner. Walking into the restaurant I appreciated its atmosphere by night. Soft music in the background, and calming dim lighting make it the perfect location for a relaxing family dinner, catch up with friends or chatty date night.
Seated at the long table at the end of the restaurant, with the Godfather himself watching over me, I was ready for a Cucinaesque feast! Following a warm welcome, we were served mocktails and a classic Cucina starter – warm, soft Focaccia with a side of olive oil, flavourful balsamic vinegar, chili flakes, grated parmesan cheese and chili oil. It’s the simplest yet most sensational start to the meal – trust me.
For some freshness, we savoured the Insalata Di Cucina which was a fantastic blend of mixed leafy greens, cucumber ribbons, parmesan shavings and a generous helping of bresaola.
The fresh greens paired perfectly with the savoury bresaola and the subtle sweetness of the balsamic reduction and honeymustard.
With an oven visible the moment you walk through
the restaurant’s doors, you can’t help but feel excited about its pizza. We were served the Pizza Bandeira which has a classic thin, crisp crust and is generously topped with fresh tomato sauce, bocconcini mozzarella balls, fresh rocket leaves and cherry tomatoes. So delicious!
A clear classic aside from pizza and pasta when it comes to Italian cuisine has to be meatballs! Cucina’s are by far some of my favourite on the island. The Polpette Napoli which are Neapolitan-style meatballs are served in a sumptuous tomato and pesto sauce.
Moving on to our main course, we savoured two types of risotto. For those who love seafood, and Arabian flavours, the Cernia Del Mediterraneo is a must. Its pan fried hammour is perfectly cooked, flaking with a gentle press of the fork.
A generous serving of lemon butter sauce and sliced black olives added flavour to this dish. My top recommendation, however, would have to be the Ravioli Funghi Di Pollo – a divinely creamy risotto with lots and lots of sauteed mushrooms and a juicy grilled
chicken breast. It is absolutely addictive and an indulgent choice any time of the week.
The highlight of the evening, though, had to be Cucina’s charcoal-grilled lamb rack. While most restaurants tend to dry out their meats when cooking them, the culinary team at Cucina has mastered their grilling techniques; their lamb is tender and moist. Each bite pairs beautifully with the sauteed potatoes which soaked up the sumptuous brown gravy sauce. Green beans wrapped with beef bacon made an ideal, elevated garnish for this dish.
A memorable dinner like this has to end on the right note, and the team had yet another creation up their sleeve to spoil us – Torta Al Cioccolato Fondante. This molten lava cake was absolutely decadent. The stream of chocolate pouring out the centre, slightly crisp edges of the cake and cool vanilla ice cream are a match made in heaven!
Needless to say, for a night of comfort, warm hospitality and extraordinary food, I will always choose Cucina!

With ISO certification from Bureau Veritas and lifeguards trained by The Royal Lifesaving Society, LPOD is clearly taking its responsibilities seriously.

MONEY AND YOU
Numbers Do Not Lie
Ihave recently started studying psychology and I was not so surprised to see that money, or rather our reaction to money, is one of the anomalies that make us human almost. It’s something that we want just for its own sake, it rarely seems to be enough, and we can be manipulated with it. However, in a sort of utopia, I would prefer that you learn to manipulate money so that it can work for you. So, continuing with the ‘money and you’ theme, this month, lets understand the stories that money tells us about ourselves and our lives. I do not promise it will be a pleasant story to read, but it’s one you need to understand very well to not be a victim.
I will begin with my favorite mantra: “numbers do not lie – unless they are manipulated”. With that in mind, what do the numbers of your life tell you? I will begin with the easier one – business numbers. I have spoken about the power of unit economics previously but as a recap, each unit produced, needs to break even at the minimum when you start and eventually needs to be profitable. If that does not happen, no amount
Business Consultant, Pria Masson, helps us explore the ‘story’ that our money tells us in this edition of ‘Money and You’.
of overhead costs can really justify sustained losses. For example, if you sell cupcakes at BD1 per cupcake, and you believe that you have priced accurately, then, at a certain number of cupcakes, the machinery, equipment etc. will all be covered, and you need to make money. The reason why we give it that time is because price is not always a seller’s choice. To stay in a business despite an unviable market set price – that is a choice.
Let’s extrapolate that to personal finances. If each month, you are at a nearly zero balance, or, if you are taking up loans to sustain your life, for how long is it all sustainable? Like in a business, you sometimes have things cooking in an oven that will give you money eventually. If that’s the case, then this model is sustainable up to that point. It’s never indefinitely sustainable and some changes will need to be made. Re-budget, prioritise differently and ask yourself some hard questions because, numbers are the story of how you’re living your life. The good news is you can change the story – usually with a few simple changes.
What story do you want your numbers to tell realistically? Have you placed your expenses (personal or business) into buckets of essentials, nice to have and luxuries? Are you certain what you consider essential is truly essential? Could you perhaps re-prioritise some things? That business line that’s not making money, which you have your heart set in, could it be what is draining you? I know that the story might not be easy but read it any way. Once you understand where the turning points are, you will be surprised at how the ending turns happy pretty fast.

Flintlock:
The Siege of Dawn
VERDICT :
Breezy and fluid fun. RATING:
WHAT IS IT?
Flintlock: The Siege of Dawn is an action role-playing video game played from a third-person perspective. In the game, the player assumes control of Nor Vanek, a member of a coalition who must save mankind from extinction by fighting against the old Gods. In Flintlock, the player can use melee weapons and flintlock firearms to attack enemies, though ammunition is scarce in the game. As the player character attacks or parries incoming attacks, they will gradually fill an enemy’s armour bar. Once it is completely filled, players can deliver a devastating attack that kills normal enemies instantly, or significantly weakens a boss character.
ZENLESS ZONE ZERO
Zenless Zone Zero is an urban fantasy action role-playing game with roguelike mechanics. The player assumes the role of a Proxy, a character who helps others explore the hostile alternate dimensions called Hollows. As they advance, the Proxy will recruit new members to their party as they continue to fight the Ethereal and other enemies. By combining the abilities of different members, players can deploy greater damage and combos onto enemies.
FINAL FANTASY XIV DAWNTRAIL
The fifth expansion pack of the hugely popular MMORPG. Following the conclusion of the Hydaelyn–Zodiark arc, Dawntrail is set to begin a new story, taking players to the distant western continent of Tural, more commonly known as the New World. Two new jobs will debut including Viper, a melee DPS that wields two swords in combat, and Pictomancer, a magical ranged DPS that fights using a brush and easel. The level cap will also reach 100. Beastmaster is also set to be added as a second ‘Limited Job’ some time into the expansion’s patch cycle.
GAMEPLAY
A direct follow-up to the storyline of two excellent turn-based RPGs, this cooperative 3D hack-and-slash admirably tries a lot of new things but gets none of them right, leaving us with a monotonous, slipshod mess. The controls are awkward and clumsy, the weapons and abilities are limp and uninteresting, and even with only five levels that can be completed in as many hours, it still feels like it drags on for far too long.
The open world of Flintlock is divided into three different regions. Players can partake in different side activities, which may change the state of the game’s world and its population. For instance, killing the enemies in a village will prompt its original community to return, thus unlocking new quests and side content.
FROSTPUNK 2
Frostpunk 2 is a city-building survival video game set in New London 30 years after the ‘Great Storm’ of the original game, the game explores the consequences of the advent of the petroleum industry and players assume the role of the city’s new leader, called the Steward, replacing the now deceased Captain, who was the player character of the original game. The city is struggling with overpopulation, food and coal shortages, among other issues. Unlike the original game, Frostpunk 2 allows players to build a much larger city. Players can now construct districts instead of individual buildings. Each district serves a particular function, such as providing food, energy or shelter.

BUILDING FUTURE CHAMPIONS
Sumaya Hussain, founder of The Triathlete Factory (TTF), shares her passion for sports and children, detailing how she transformed her love for fitness into a thriving academy that shapes the lives of young athletes. Through resilience and community spirit, her centre is not just training kids for triathlons, but also instilling lifelong values. Edwin D’Souza shares her inspiring story.
As someone that has always led an active lifestyle, Sumaya Hussain’s move to inspire the younger generation was natural. Her earliest memory of fitness included participating in tennis matches, being a key player in basketball, and even taking up Kung Fu as a child. “In 2017, I started cycling and later took up running. By 2018, I was officially introduced to the world of triathlons as I began training for my first IRONMAN,” Sumaya reminisces.
The idea for The Triathlete Factory – which now has a lasting impact on young athletes – came to Sumaya during the pandemic. “While the entire world, including my kids, was locked at home, I was still able to run on roads, ride my bike, and swim in the sea. I noticed how bored my kids were, and the time I spent training sparked the idea of a triathlon academy. Then by January 2021, TTF was born.”
The main goal of TTF is to promote physical fitness, skill development, confidence and resilience among children while fostering
a supportive community. “The centre helps shape children’s habits and instills essential values through triathlon training,” she believes. “Besides learning how to swim, bike and run, the kids develop social interaction skills, resilience, perseverance, healthy lifestyle choices and confidence.”
TTF trains children between the ages of four and 15, tailoring programmes to suit different age groups, including Kids Level, Juniors and Teens. When asked about the ideal duration for children to prepare for a triathlon, Sumaya recommends, “A preparation period of eight to 12 weeks is ideal for most youth triathlons, depending on the child’s age, fitness level and the distance of the triathlon.”
“We have participated in over 40 races in Bahrain and Qatar, and in each race, we always had a podium representative. The beauty of the community forming at TTF is that it’s one big supportive family. The number of little friendships forming, even among parents who were inspired to take up sports is incredible,” she shares.
To keep children engaged and motivated, TTF employs a range of strategies. “Our coaches are wonderful they are engaging and fun. We’ve also created our mascot, Teddy F, and his little brothers. Everyone loves Teddy F, and we give him to spend a week with the star of the class. We also have cute stickers, circle time to emphasise good behaviour, and an annual TTF award ceremony,” Sumaya explained.
Sumaya’s focus on training children rather than adults is deeply rooted in her passion for working with kids. “I know how to connect with them. The children have improved physically and mentally, and the strength of this supportive community is priceless They are the beautiful future,” she says.
“I always dreamt of touching people’s lives and being a force of change. I am living my dream now, watching kids and families change their mindset and adopt sports as part of their lifestyle. Witnessing the transformation in their personalities is truly rewarding.”
A Colourful Journey of Creativity
Sophia Noor is captivating Bahrain’s art scene with her vibrant creations. Growing from early experiments with acrylics to mastering largescale oil paintings, the artist is now seeking to expand her artistic presence and explore new opportunities. Edwin D’Souza shares her story.
Sophia Noor is an Indian artist who was born and raised in Bahrain. At just 16, she is already making waves in the local art scene with her unique art which is characterised by bright colours and thick textures.
“I’ve always been drawn to the world of art and often showcase human faces or underwater creatures through my paintings. In fact, my first completed collection, titled Underwater, portrays them in vibrant and sometimes fantastical seascapes,” she says.
Speaking about her artistic journey, she shares that her passion
for art began at an early age. “My parents often tell me that I was involved in art since I was a toddler,” she says.
Her father and nanny were instrumental in teaching her the basics of human anatomy, nature and animals, while her mother provided further encouragement. “I’d dip plastic paint brushes into water and watch the colours change in art books or draw flowers and bees with my nanny,” she reminisces.
As she grew older, she honed her skills by watching YouTube tutorials and replicating the work of established artists. She also attended a short online course at the University of the Arts London, which helped her transition to painting on canvases by the time she turned nine. “I started with acrylics which were simple and only required water to thin them, unlike oil paints, which needed turpentine or paint thinner,” she explains.
“My early paintings were predominantly created with acrylics, but an art teacher encouraged me to try oil paints and highlighted its advantages.”
“For my first attempt with oils, I followed a Bob Ross tutorial which didn’t quite go as planned,
but I didn’t give up. After three years, I managed to switch to oil paints which I believe better suit my artistic goals,” she adds.
Today, her art is often created on large canvases which she chooses based on the impact she wants her compositions to have on the viewer. “I chose to paint on a larger scale to make up for the inexperience in my use of technique. Over time, I developed my ability to scale up efficiently through trial and error, starting with grid methods and later relying on my eye,” she explains.
Recently, Sophia completed an eyecatching painting of Buddha meditating underwater – a project that took over a year to finish. “I am currently a sixth-form student at the British School of Bahrain, and I’m considering pursuing fine arts at university, with institutions like Pratt Institute and RISD in mind. While I am exploring other career options, I dream of being featured in galleries worldwide and possibly opening my own atelier or studio,” she says cheerfully.
Sophia is currently working on a mural at Market Street, in Umm Al Hassam, and is planning a new collection that will stray
from her usual style while maintaining her signature bright colours. She plans to participate in several upcoming exhibitions in Bahrain once her new collection is complete.
As she continues to grow as an artist, she is actively seeking gallery opportunities in Bahrain to display her work and is open to painting murals to contribute to Bahrain’s art community.

CHALLENGE THOSE BACK-TO-SCHOOL JITTERS!
Getting your kids back to school come September can be quite challenging. Parenting columnist, Ouiam El Hassani, shares her tried and tested tips and tricks for getting your kids out of vacation mode and back to school!
As the lazy days of summer wind down, the structured rhythm of the school year looms on the horizon. For many children, this transition is filled with excitement and anticipation. However, for others, the prospect of returning to the classroom can spark anxiety and worry. It’s important to recognise that these feelings are normal, but for some children, they can be overwhelming.
The transition from the relaxed pace of summer to the structured environment of school can be challenging for children of all ages. Younger children may experience separation anxiety, while older kids might grapple with academic pressures or social concerns. Recognising the signs of anxiety is essential. These can include changes in sleep patterns, irritability, loss of appetite, difficulty concentrating or withdrawal from social activities.
Children of different ages experience back-to-school anxiety in unique ways. Younger children might exhibit clinginess, tantrums, or difficulty sleeping. Older children and adolescents may withdraw from social activities, experience academic decline or exhibit mood swings. Tailoring your approach to your child’s age is essential.
Here’s the approach you need to take depending on how old your child is:
3-6 years old: Focus on establishing routines, providing comfort objects and practicing gradual separations.
7-11 years old: Encourage open communication, build social skills and offer academic support.
12-18 years old: Prioritise active listening, independence and future-oriented conversations.
Regardless of your child’s age, creating a supportive and understanding environment at home is paramount. Encourage open communication by creating a safe space for your child to express their feelings without judgment. Practice active listening; validate their emotions and let them know you’re
there to support them. Building a sense of routine can also provide comfort and stability. Consistent bedtimes, mealtimes and daily schedules can help anchor children during this transitional period.
Involving your child in back-to-school preparations can help alleviate anxiety. Let them choose their backpack, lunchbox or school supplies. This sense of control and involvement can be empowering. If possible, for first- timers, visit the school together before the first day to familiarise them with the environment.
Physical activity is a powerful tool for managing stress. Encourage your child to engage in sports, dance or outdoor play. Relaxation techniques like deep breathing, mindfulness and yoga can also be beneficial. Establishing a healthy sleep routine, limiting screen time before bed, and ensuring a balanced diet contribute to overall well-being.
Creating a calming bedtime routine can significantly impact a child’s sleep quality and overall mood. Establish a relaxing presleep ritual, such as a warm bath, reading a calming story or gentle stretching.
Encourage participation in extracurricular activities or clubs that align with their interests, this way they can learn to build strong social connections, which is vital for their mental health. Role-playing social situations can help build confidence and communication skills. Teaching your child coping mechanisms can empower them to handle challenges. Encourage problemsolving, deep breathing exercises and positive self-talk. Building their resilience will benefit them not only during the back-toschool transition but throughout their lives.
Remember, patience and consistency are key when supporting a child with anxiety.
Celebrate small victories and acknowledge their efforts. By creating a nurturing and understanding environment, you can empower your child to overcome challenges and build resilience for the future.
If your child’s anxiety persists or worsens, seeking professional help is essential. A child therapist can provide valuable guidance and support. Remember, you’re not alone in this journey. Many parents face similar challenges, and there are resources available to help you and your child.
Every child is unique, and what works for one may not work for another. Trust your instincts as a parent and be open to trying different approaches. By understanding your child’s needs and providing a supportive environment, you can help them navigate the back-to-school transition with confidence and resilience.

ONE STEP CLOSER TO WOTY 2024
The Woman This Month team is proud to announce that over 300 nominations were received for the first Woman Of The Year Awards.
Following an exciting campaign starting in March 2024, we are happy to announce that the firstever Woman Of The Year Awards has received over 300 nominations (of which 51 percent are Bahraini nationals) as of August 28. Nominations for the upcoming awards event, which will take place on December 2, are now officially closed.
As women, we often fail to recognise our own achievements. Hence, it was a joy for WTM to note that, as part of the nominations received, there were a significant number of self-nominations recorded across all five broad categories: Engineeering and Technical; Business and Financial; Artistic and Creative; Health, Hospitality, Education and Social; and Lifestyle and Media.
Previously, we had announced that the nomination period includes a vetting process carried out by
the Awards Review Committee along with Russell Bedford Assure Audit. Starting in August, ARC interviewed nominees as part of the process and were thrilled to hear the stories of inspiring women from all walks of life. Several interviewees were delighted to learn that the awards will recognise the efforts of women in Bahrain who have contributed in every way. This is precisely what Woman This Month’s initiative stands for – Celebrating Excellence.
The nominees will be shortlisted and announced in the October 2024 edition of Woman This Month, which will be launched at an exclusive event held on September 30. Following the announcements, voting for each category will begin.
We would like to thank our readers, and past and present residents of Bahrain for actively submitting their nominations.
Remember to visit womanoftheyearawards.com and to follow @womanthismonth on Instagram and LinkedIn for updates.

I am an islander! I love being by the water! It just calms my overthinking mind down! But I don’t really know much about boating (funnily enough).
My career! Having graduated from the American University in Dubai and spending almost 12 years in the UAE from completing my higher education and then starting my career, gaining experience in different communication and/or marketing roles.
