AUGUST 2023 Bahrain This Month
Welcome to another jam-packed edition of Bahrain This Month, which we're proud to say is equal parts information and entertainment. Summer isn't over just yet, so you can make the most of August through our happenings section, which has a variety of entertaining events, and nightlife venues featured. If you're more of a morning person, you'll find lots to amuse you in our summer entertainment feature and can find even more events on bahrainthismonth.com.
Diplomatic relations between the Republic of India and the Kingdom of Bahrain were established 52 years ago. Interestingly enough, the two nations have historical relations that can be traced back 5000 years to the period of Bahrain's Dilmun civilisation. To mark India's Independence Day on August 15, we proudly present the special India in Bahrain supplement, which covers various facets that strengthen present-day ties, including industrial collaborations, banking, travel, creative arts, and more. We also feature iconic Indians in Bahrain who have played a role in developing these ties.
Meanwhile, our special feature on education in Bahrain highlights some of the very best educational establishments from pre-school to university. You can also find out why Canadian School Bahrain, as seen on our cover, is the prime choice for many parents.
While there's no dearth of interviewees in this month's edition, we are happy to introduce you to the young Bahraini artist, Salman Aljar, who is passionate about changing the perceptions surrounding street art. A very talented young man indeed!

Embracing Art
Graffiti and street art have always struggled to be held in the same esteem as other more traditional forms of art, yet with the incredible talents of local artists such as Salman Aljar, attitudes are slowly changing.
Kristian Harrison spoke to him to discuss his influences, the art scene in the Kingdom and his desire to change perceptions.
Salman, who is better known on social media as Sojr, began drawing at a very young age and was rarely seen without a pencil and sketchbook in hand. However, in 2017 he started dabbling in street art and the rest is history.
“I love hip-hop culture and that was my main influence,” he says. “I used to break dance all the time and I was always watching a lot of gangster films and dance movies such as Step Up, and that is when I really started to feel like I fit into that urban culture.
“I began practicing with spray paints alone on my rooftop, and then in 2019 a friend of mine messaged me on Instagram and invited me to his group, Art Attack Krew, which is where the hobby really took off and I began learning so much.”
Salman, 23, recently left the Art Attack Krew to join another group of very close friends, who call themselves the Weirdos. The six artists, including four Bahrainis, a Saudi and an Emirati, do projects all year round and travel across the region to practice their art. Most of the time, they do their own individual pieces as
solo artists, but they do collaboration work for public exhibitions.
Salman’s preferred style is portraits, and he is clear to make the distinction between graffiti and street art. The former is most recognisable as a written tag, with other forms including stencils, posters and stickers. Street art is defined as a work which is primarily for a public audience, such as murals and portraits, usually with permission from the building owner.
“I definitely believe myself to be a street artist,” he asserts. “I practice graffiti sometimes at home but I don’t find it as stimulating, just writing my name in different styles. Portraiture is a whole different world and ever since I saw an American artist named Kiptoe, who is my biggest inspiration, it’s all I’ve wanted to do. I just prefer to do portraits because every time it’s a different face, colour and shape, allowing me to express my creativity fully.”
However, expressing creativity is in fact Salman and other street artists’ biggest challenge. Specifically; where to do it.
“Here in Bahrain, people don’t like the idea of street art as they feel it destroys the look of places,” Salman argues sadly. “We believe the opposite and we refuse to listen to what they say. We love this job and we won’t stop until more people get the idea that street art can be beautiful.
“The biggest struggle is finding spaces to do our art. We often search for months to find places to practice, and without any sponsors we rely on the kindness of people occasionally letting us use their walls. We do have our own small space, essentially an abandoned house, but that’s it.
“Ultimately, the most important thing for us is to get people to embrace street art and how beautiful it can be. We would love to change the mentality, but I know this will be a long process.”
Salman’s work can be found on Instagram @sojr. official and he also produces vlogs and tutorials on TikTok, which is also @sojr.official.
BOLSTERINGTIES
P.S. Balasubramanyam (known as Balu) has been instrumental in strengthening the bond between India and Bahrain. Kristian Harrison sat down with him to find out more about his role as a founding member and pioneer of the Bahrain India Society (BIS), and its role in bolstering ties between the two friendly nations.
TheBIS was established in 2008 as a non-profit organisation with the main objective of bringing closer ties of friendship and understanding between the peoples of Bahrain and India.
It was founded by HE Abdulnabi Al Sho’ala and is presently chaired by Abdulrahman Juma. HE Piyush Srivastava, the former Ambassador of India to the Kingdom of Bahrain, serves as patron.
“I am very proud to have been associated with BIS since its inception,” states Mr. Balu. “I was the Treasurer for 10 years and am currently the Vice Chairman, something I consider an honour. As part of our objectives, the society boosts co-operation in the fields of economic, commercial, cultural, sports and scientific fields.”
The society’s dynamic board encompasses various professionals and hosts numerous events in coordination with the Indian Embassy and other prominent bodies in Bahrain, including the American Chamber of Commerce (AmCham), Bahrain Chapter of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (BCICAI) and other government bodies like the Economic Development Board (EDB).
“Most recently, we signed a Memorandum of Understanding between the BIS and the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) in March, the main objective of which is to promote industrial and business relationships,” he states.
The BIS comprises 120 members, of which there are 15 corporate members and 105 individual members, which includes the board members, mentors, past chairmen and others. Corporate members are entitled to nominate five as representatives and members include both Bahraini and Indian businessmen, doctors, media, lawyers, educators, chartered accountants and other professionals.
Membership brings a number of perks. For example, the BIS will host the profile of corporate members and individual members on the BIS website and provide special access codes so they can access other members’ profiles and develop contacts between them to network for their mutual benefit. Sponsorship and hosting of company services is also available.
“We are currently finalising the details on introducing international benefits to the BIS,” Mr. Balu explains. “As well as aiming to get corporate sponsors like banks, insurance
companies and large corporates on board, we will get reciprocal membership with the Indian Club in Dubai, the Bangalore Club, and the Gymkhana Club in India. Not only this, but we are working on getting special discount arrangements with other amenities such as five-star hotels clubs, premium credit cards, fine dining restaurants etc.”
As part of its monthly activities, the society invites prominent speakers, including ministers, to give talks on subjects of interest to the members. “This does not just have to be business, but also knowledge building, wellness and other informative subjects. Recent examples of topics from the last year include the latest development in the country’s economy, insurance, banking, risk management, succession planning and will execution,” he says.
“Finally, we are excited to have more interaction with the Bahrain Embassy in India, and a programme is in place with the Ambassador of Bahrain to India and the Indian Embassy in Bahrain for closer co-operation in commercial, cultural and
sports activities which will include fun events for our members,” he adds.
As one of the cornerstones of Bahrain-India relations, BIS is always looking for ways to improve that relationship, and there are exciting plans in the pipeline to achieve this. According to Mr. Balu, chief of these is pursuing the Double Tax Avoidance Agreement (DTAA) between Bahrain & India. The society is also currently developing relations between the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce & Industry (FICCI), the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI), and other national organisations of India. “Having closer coordination between other entities in India about business opportunities available in India will allow us to disseminate these to the business community in Bahrain and provide opportunities. Creating awareness of the benefits of setting up companies in Bahrain for Indian businesses to take advantage of the Free Trade Agreement between the US and Bahrain is important to us,” he says.
“Furthermore, it is important
for us to facilitate businesses and enterprises from both countries. To do this, we will be holding a Bahrain-India Trade fair in the near future and we are putting the finishing touches on creating a ‘help desk’ for investors, in co-ordination with the Indian Embassy, which will offer extensive information about conducting business in either country,” he elaborates.
Some of Mr. Balu’s other social commitments include being an executive member and internal auditor of the Indian Community Relief Fund (ICRF), providing aid and welfare services to Indian workers in the Kingdom. He was also the Chairman and a current mentor of the Bahrain Chapter of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (BCICAI).

ICICI Bank offers innovative financial solutions for Indians in Bahrain
ICICI Bank Limited launched retail and commercial banking activities in the Kingdom of Bahrain in 2007, three years after setting up an offshore banking unit in the Kingdom. Ever since, the Bank has been catering to various banking and financial needs of the NRIs living in the island country. The Bank has been providing improved convenience to its customers by continuous upgradation and introduction of new products and services, as well as expansion of its physical network. It has a branch in Manama and two service centres in Juffair and Dana Mall. The service centres provide services for all products offered by the Manama branch, except cash deposit and withdrawal.
ICICI Bank Limited Country Head – Bahrain, Raghavendra Shenoy, believes that the Bank has gained the trust and confidence from the NRI community by providing customised products and services. “As the Bank continues to expand its operations, it recognises the importance of catering to the unique requirements of NRIs,” says Mr. Shenoy. The Bank’s dedication to serve NRIs is further exemplified by offering products and services which they can use in both India and Bahrain. “These offerings facilitate easy management of funds and enable NRIs to conveniently invest or save in India. We offer a suite of products and services for retail and private banking customers including savings and current accounts, fixed deposits, global money transfer or remittances, and investment in instruments like bonds and mutual funds for private banking customers” he states.
Bilateral relations between the Kingdom of Bahrain and India were established over 50 years ago. Today, over 350,000 Indian nationals reside in Bahraintheir home away from home. We learned about the innovative products and services that ICICI Bank
Limited, Bahrain offers to these Non-Resident Indians (NRIs).
“One of the most popular offerings is the ‘Loan Against Deposit’ facility which enables NRIs to avail loans against their deposits. This convenient facility allows customers to meet their financial needs without liquidating deposits,” he adds.
NRIs can also take advantage of ICICI Bank’s home loan for properties in India – a unique offering which allows them to invest in property in India while living in the Kingdom. Similarly, they can make use of the 3-in-1 trading account in India. The Bank also offers a range of trade and transaction banking services to corporate clients.
Notably, ICICI Bank recently expanded its reach in the Kingdom through the opening of a service centre at Dana Mall, Sanabis which is easily accessible for residents in the Central, Northern and Southern provinces. “This expansion enhances the Bank’s presence in the country. It also enables us to provide a seamless banking experience to customers in the vicinity,” he says.
“Through its NRI products and ‘Loan Against Deposit’ offerings, the Bank has catered to the specific needs of the Indian community in Bahrain, making banking more accessible and convenient. As the Bank continues to innovate and redefine the banking landscape in Bahrain, it is poised to strengthen the economic ties and promote bilateral trade between these two thriving nations,” he concludes.
AN ICON OF PROGRESS
With a career in the Middle East spanning more than 40 years and as Bahrain’s sole recipient of the Pravasi Bharatiya Samman Award to honour Non-Resident Indians who have made an exceptional and meritorious contribution in their chosen field abroad, K.G. Baburajan is one of the most important Indian citizens in the Kingdom. Currently the Chairman and General Manager of BKG Holding, he sat down with Bahrain This Month to tell his story.
How did you first arrive in the region?
My career in the Middle East began in 1979 when I joined Al-Hoty Stanger in Saudi Arabia, a branch of Stanger, one of the oldestquality controltesting and inspection services founded in the UK back in 1840. We set up a facility in Bahrain to work on the construction ofthe King Fahd Causeway, which was my first major project.I was then asked to join the company’s engineering department ofstandards, specifically the field of Foundation Design and Piling in Bahrain a couple of years later.
What other projects have you been involved with? Which was the most challenging and why?
I have also been involved in the construction of the Shaikh Khalifa Port,Alba,BAPCO, Bahrain International Airport Terminal modernisation,Almoayyed Tower,Shaikh Isa Bridge,Sitra Bridge and more.I would say the Causeway project was the most challenging one because that was the biggest project in the entire region at the time.Plus,it was at the beginning of my career so I was still constantly learning.
As a proud recipient of the Pravasi Bharatiya Samman Award, how vital do you see the relationship between Bahrain and India, both on a national level and for the Indian diaspora in Bahrain?
The relationshipbetween the two countries goes back at least 5,000 years, so the connection was there already going back to the trade ofspices and grain. In more recent times, because ofthe British rule in India, Bahrain acted like a link between Britain and India.Indians should be proud to have contributed so much to the development of this part ofthe world;and we are grateful to the Royal Family for giving us the opportunity for unrestricted professional growth and progress.
What are your social commitments outside of business, particularly in the area of boosting relations?
I believe that God has given me a certain privilege in life. I therefore feel that I should share that with people who are less
privileged in all aspects, whether that is education, medical, socialor any other way we can helprather than just finance alone.I have built houses for poorer people in Kerala and other parts of the world. What advice would you give to young engineers who are interested in a career in construction or who have recently graduated, particularly young Indians?
I think the most important thing to remember is that you help to give a professionalservice to the country, wherever you are working. We should also uphold our tradition and culture ofthe country, which is India. The most important thing,I would say,is that they should be dedicated and responsible in their profession. Then, naturally, success will come.Never do something just for the sake ofdoing a job and earning some money. The passion should be there, and Bahrain is one ofthe best for working and opportunity ifyou work hard.

The zing and the vitality which I derive from my work is way beyond any altitude to be measured and that keeps me going.”
Making History
India’s lunar exploration programme is on the verge of its greatest triumph yet as the Chandrayaan-3 rocket successfully blasted off on a mission to the moon last month.
The rocket, which translates to ‘moon craft’ in Sanskrit, took off from a launch pad in Sriharikota, an island in southern India, with an orbiter, a lander and a rover, in a demonstration of India’s emerging space technology. The spacecraft will embark on a journey lasting slightly over a month before landing on the moon’s surface later this month. Until then, the rocket is slowly boosting its orbit ahead of a final shot toward the moon. To do this, the spacecraft’s propulsion module completes an orbit-raising manoeuvre, with the engines firing at the spacecraft’s closest approach to Earth, raising its apogee, or the farthest point from Earth of its orbit.
Chandrayaan-3 is seen as the crown jewel of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and the mission is India’s second attempt to touch down on the moon, following the failed 2019 attempt made by the Chandrayaan-2 lander. On that occasion, it entered the lunar orbit but a software glitch caused it to lose touch with its lander, which crashed while making its final descent to deploy a rover to search for signs of water. The new mission has
built on the lessons learned from the earlier landing attempt. If touchdown is successful, the mission lander and rover will collect science data on the surface for up to 14 Earth days (a single day on the moon). The six-wheeled lander and rover module of Chandrayaan-3 is configured with payloads that will provide data to the scientific community on the properties of lunar soil and rocks, including chemical and elemental compositions.
A successful landing would make India the fourth country – after the United States, the Soviet Union and China – to achieve the feat. According to ISRO, the main objective of the mission this time was not studying the lunar surface, but rather simply a safe and soft landing on the moon.
With India emerging as the world’s fifth-largest economy, its government is eager to show off the country’s prowess in security and technology. India is using research from space and elsewhere to
solve problems at home. Its space programme has already helped develop satellite, communication and remote-sensing technologies and has been used to gauge underground water levels and predict weather in the country, which is prone to cycles of drought and flood.
India is also looking forward to its first mission to the International Space Station next year, in collaboration with the US as part of recent agreements between presidents Narendra Modi and Joe Biden at the White House.
This one-off visit by an Indian astronaut to the International Space Station will precede India launching its first astronaut from Indian soil on an Indian rocket in late 2024.
Since1979, ACME has earned a stellar reputation as a prominent system integrator in the Middle East. In addition to IT infrastructure services, it has a well-established software applications line of business.
Mr. Hussaini says: “We have consistently covered a large spectrum of technology deliverables, ensuring a turnkey solution implementation. ACME maintained the highest level of partnerships possible in Bahrain with a host of world majors in IT. Thus, we provide a downstream support assurance to our clientele across multiple verticals.

At the Forefront of Technology

applications covering the domains of public sector, finance, healthcare, education and retail.
“ACME is one of the very first companies in the Middle East that acquired Cloud business expertise and created a Cloud practice which meet global maturity standards and has proven credentials across multi-cloud and Hybrid IT platforms.”
Recently, ACME took the next major step in its expansion by launching its Global Services Hub in Hyderabad, India. An ever-increasing customer base led to a necessity for the company to scale up in terms of service coverage and availability of skill sets.
“Hyderabad was selected as it is a very cosmopolitan city that emerged as a Hub for IT and the pharmaceutical industry in India,” Mr. Hussaini explains. “Hyderabad accounts for around 12 percent of the country’s exports in
terms of IT and hosts global major technology companies. In addition, being a Hyderabadi myself and a biryani lover, it is but logical that I had a bias towards this city!”
ACME Global Hub will also offer exchange programmes for Bahrainis to work on projects together with their peers in a different geocultural environment including Hyderabad’s demanding environment.
Building on its reputation in Bahrain, ACME has set its sights on evolving into an IT leader in the wider region. Hence, it has partnered with the prominent business house Fouad Alghanim Group in Kuwait to establish Alghanim & Almoayyed Computer Solutions Co. (AACS).
“AACS is one of few companies that has a vast portfolio covering IT infrastructure, business applications, cloud, and application modernisation services,” he concludes.
A MAN OF THE COMMUNITY
Driven by a clear head and a full heart, Mr. Mansoor strives ever forward in his business life and his personal goal of building communities. His passionate belief that everybody deserves a chance can easily be seen in his choices, prior to his meteoric rise to success, and through how he has wielded his growing influence.
Saara Group is a massive Middle Eastern conglomerate headquartered in Bahrain, with ties around the world. It caters to a range of services across verticals and boasts a fine group of Strategic Business Units (SBUs) under its umbrella that it deploys according to the need of each client it works with. The Group’s portfolio includes industrial solutions which deliver construction services with a focus on Petrochemical Plants and Facilities, as well as renting and supplying specialised industrial equipment as well as handling industrial solutions. The Group has highly trained and certified staff capable of offering an unwavering quality of work in any situation.
Mr. Mansoor has played a key role in bringing a multi-million-dollar investment to India through a US-based Triton EV manufacturing unit as well as a lithium battery plant. Furthermore, a commodity trading subsidiary based in UAE handles Oil and Gas trading as an Aramco and Saudi Basic Industries Corporation (SABIC) vendor. The group’s portfolio also includes the California-based JVKUSA E&P that has placed oil exploration into its roster.
Playing to Win
A passionate sportsman himself, Mr. Mansoor is involved in sports administration as Brave Combat Federation’s Vice President for India
and South East Asia, President of KHK Cricket and Bahrain Cricket Federation’s Chairman of the Advisory board. Since its formation, the federation has used its strategic vision to help Bahrain’s men and women teams achieve spectacular success.
His growing influence in international cricket circles is obvious from the fact that the Asian Cricket Council held their Executive Board meeting in the country with ACC President, Jay Shah, and other cricket board chiefs making their first visit to the Kingdom.
He is also the man responsible for bringing one of the most iconic trophies to Bahrain as the Kingdom is a part of the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup Trophy Tour. In fact, the trophy will be in Bahrain on August 12 and August 13. It’s an endeavour of mammoth proportions and it could have only been possible with someone who has garnered massive admiration in the sports community and has exceptional organisational skills to get it done. And, as demonstrated with the Bahrain Premier League in 2018, Mr. Mansoor has done it all before.
Philanthropic Pursuits
As VP of KHK Heroes Foundation, Mr. Mansoor spearheaded the assistance of economically vulnerable communities and expatriates throughout the kingdom during COIVD-19. He is closely associated with several reputable expatriate
associations in the country and is a board member of the prestigious Bahrain India Society. He has been felicitated for exemplary community work by the BKS and KCA. The most notable among the awards that he has been conferred with, the Hind Ratan Award by the NRI Welfare Society, is his most cherished.
Growing as a Community
While the SAARA Group of today is a giant amongst regional businesses, the Chairman can think back to a time when he had ideas aplenty but lacked the resources to transform them into a working business. It is this understanding and sympathy that drives him to support multiple startups as a venture capitalist through the Group’s Investment and Project Finance arm.
The company supports entrepreneurs by providing them not only with funding but also with counsel and experiential advice. Through this department, there is a focused interest in startups in the tech and healthcare fields.
SAARA Group Founder and Chairman, Mohammad Mansoor, is a veritable whirlwind of ideas and decisiveness. We explore his commendable achievements in business, sport and philanthropy.Mr. Mansoor with International Cricket Council Chairman, Greg Barclay, at their AGM in Durban, South Africa. Mr. Mansoor with HH Shaikh Nasser bin Hamad Al Khalifa and HH Shaikh Khalid bin Hamad Al Khalifa. Mr. Mansoor was honoured by KCA for his contribution to sports and international relations. The award was presented by Minister of Labour and Social Development, HE Jameel Bin Mohammed Ali Humaidan.
TALKING BUSINESS
Vijay Boloor is a serial entrepreneur, having spent more than 40 years in Bahrain. As a board member of the Bahrain India Society, he was recently elected as its Treasurer. He spoke to Bahrain This Month about his career and the BIS’ ability to open doors for budding businessmen.
Could you give us a summary of your four decades in Bahrain?
I came to the Gulf in 1977 and I started my career in Dubai working for the British Bank of the Middle East, which is now HSBC, until 1984. I originally came with another bank but quickly moved to another company, and since then I have been the Director of Gajria Holdings. My wife was born in Bahrain and I myself have been a Bahraini citizen for 20 years now.
When did you know that you were an entrepreneur?
I’ve always been interested in business. My father was involved in Bollywood with the legendary Mehboob Khan and I almost followed him into the industry as a script writer and director! However, that wasn’t my path and I knew my heart was set on entrepreneurship.
What are your thoughts on doing business in Bahrain both as an expatriate and now as a Bahraini?
Originally as an expatriate, businesses were restricted in terms of the percentage of business you could hold or even enter at all. Gradually, the Kingdom, thanks to
the wise decisions of His Majesty King Hamad, have made it much easier; very few businesses are restricted no matter where you are from. This is a great thing in order to create jobs and opportunities in this wonderful country, and now expatriates can own businesses completely. They have the full confidence to put their money into the Kingdom.
What advantage do companies have by operating in Bahrain compared to elsewhere in the GCC?
Whilst we are aiming to open the GCC market to investors in Bahrain, or at least the opportunity to expand, Bahrain is much less expensive to establish a company thanks to its extremely business-friendly nature and it’s a great option to live here comfortably.
You were recently elected as the Treasurer of the Bahrain India Society (BIS). What achievements have you accomplished so far?
It’s my sixth year on the board and I am proud to have been elected as its Treasurer! We have a membership of 120 which includes both prominent members and company representatives. We have just signed a Memorandum of Understanding between the BIS and the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), the main objective of which is to promote industrial and business relationships and facilitate investors on both sides.
What is the main advantage of being a member of the BIS?
The biggest advantage is networking. We host frequent talks with business leaders, government officials and ministers, giving people the opportunity to ask questions and learn about the business environment. You can expand your business through contacts, and there’s no other way to hold talks with a hundred CEOs at formal and informal dinners!
Do you have any advice for expatriates who wish to set up a business in Bahrain?
At the moment, what I like to call ‘new age’ businesses are booming. Financial and digital technology businesses are more likely to succeed as they don’t involve too much inventory or human resources. Of course, the passion and determination to work hard is just as important as the idea itself.

Stories forBigthe Screen
The Kingdom’s cinema scene has expanded massively in recent years, and it is currently celebrating one of its biggest releases yet, the Hindi-language drama Bas Ik Vaari. Kristian Harrison spoke to the film’s writer and director, Preety Praveen, about her experiences as an expat, how it shaped the movie and her response to its overwhelming reaction.
Ms. Praveen hails from Patiala, Punjab and describes herself as a psychologist by profession and a writer by heart. She moved to Bahrain in 2009 alongside her husband and two children, and it is the life of an expat which inspired her to pen Bas Ik Vaari.
“I started writing from a tender age but never took it seriously until a decade ago,” she
explains. “This led me to eventually writing and directing short movies and theatre plays. In fact, one of my best plays was ‘Aashiyana Mera,’ which was showcased at the Global Organisation of People of Indian Origin (GOPIO) event which was held in January 2018. I also cherish two of my short movies, ‘Hesitancy’ and ‘Lakeerien’, which were based on social awareness in Bahrain. In 2019, I published my first book, ‘Cross Connection,’ based on my own story,” explains Ms. Praveen.
Bas Ik Vaari, fully conceived and conceptualised in Bahrain, is a story revolving around a father and a daughter and their love and hate relationship. It explores how they get trapped in delusional misunderstandings and whether they are able to resolve them.
“Most of my stories are women-oriented and so is Bas Ik Vaari,” Ms Praveen says. “I had written this story a couple of years back but I had to wait until the pandemic was over to be lucky enough to find the perfect team to work on this project.”
“While writing this story, I thought of the helplessness of a girl to keep herself connected with her family after marriage. Being a lady, I’ve also experienced some hiccups in my life and have tried to incorporate those feelings,” she says.
“The success of the movie lies in the compliments we received from our audience. It was a dream come true to get
the opportunity to screen Bas Ik Vaari at Mukta Cinema and everyone who came left the screening with a message in their heart, memories of their loved ones and tears of nostalgia and love,” she adds.
Audiences loved the simplicity and natural approach of the characters and the five back-toback shows were sold out, so much so that there are plans to screen the film again in cinemas in September after which, should all go well, it will be available to stream.
Regardless of the next step, seeing the film come to fruition after years of writing, filming and post-production, made it all worth it for Ms. Praveen.
“I never had thought in my wildest dreams that it would turn out to be such a big, beautiful and successful project,” she says happily.
“Until the last day, my team was rushing to finish the final details. I literally had sleepless nights before the release. On the day of the premiere, I sat in the cinema with my whole crew, holding hands with our hearts pounding. I can still visualise that moment, when the movie finished and we all got up and turned back to see the audience. All were clapping, had tears and for the next half an hour, we all were flooded with compliments and hugs,” she says.
“I want to thank each and every person who has made Bas Ik Vaari successful. The best reward I received was that everyone wanted to know about my next project. So, stay tuned!” she concludes.
A VISIONARY BUSINESSMAN
Bhaskaran K. Edathody is an experienced business professional and has spent four decades in the chemical industry of Saudi Arabia, rising to the position of Director of the Gulf Desert Chemical Company. He has recently established a Bahrainbased business, Adler Westpoint, so Bahrain This Month caught up with him to find out more.
Mr. Edathody’s career began after graduating from the University of Calicut with a B. Com degree in 1980, when he became an executive in Tulsiani Chambers, Mumbai. In 1982, he was offered the role of Executive Secretary in TRADCO, Saudi Arabia, which is when he relocated overseas, and gained more comprehensive knowledge of business and administration. After a year, he joined RAWABI, where he stayed for 28 years before a stint as Divisional Manager at ERAM Trading and Contracting, which led to his role as Director of Business Services at GDC.
GDC is an integrated chemical company which describes itself as passionate about supplying high quality chemical and petrochemical products and services. GDC’s business started by stocking and supplying various grades of Drilling Admixtures and has developed to now cover the cycle from sourcing and procuring, formulation and manufacturing, packaging and refilling, warehousing and logistics, as well as technical support.
One of the cornerstones to Mr Edathody’s success is his approach to leadership.
“Transparency and integrity, encouraging innovation and creativity while promoting health and safety at the workplace are the guiding values of my leadership philosophy,” he says.
“Our broad vision is driven by people who are our greatest asset. Fairness, transparency, accountability and ethics are the main elements of our corporate governance structured to achieve the business purpose efficiently and fairly for all stakeholders. Our team is always working on improving customer experience. Since our customers have put faith and trust in our services, we always try to create a win-win situation under a give and take policy.
“Ultimately, persistence and perseverance is the key. Have faith and keep working towards your goals while trusting the process. It will happen soon. Slow and steady wins the race,” he says.
Mr. Edathody has used his wisdom and experience to establish Adler Westpoint. The company was set up with the intention to provide professional, direct B2B marketing and sales support services and proficient assistance
to SME’s and corporate entities in the Kingdom.
“Recent studies show that 80 percent of Bahrain’s economic map consists of SME’s run with three-to-10 employees per organisation,” he explains. “We intend to provide highly effective services for a very nominal cost in order to reduce the financial burden on such companies and help them to increase their stronghold over their line of trade. Sharing more than 20 years of corporate business experience between the directors, companies can be assured that they are dealing with one of the best business teams in the Kingdom.”
Considering his extensive experience within the industry, Mr. Edathody is in the perfect position to offer advice to budding industry leaders.
“Be customer-friendly and passionate, know your market, be prepared with your finances and most importantly, keep them in order,” he proposes. “Sometimes you are required to make sacrifices, so be prepared for them too. Partner with your suppliers and customers, be flexible and delegate authority wherever and whenever required.”
CHANGING THE WORLD WITH ZEAL
Dr. Arun Kumar Praharaj’s incredible journey from a successful corporate professional to a diaspora leader in Bahrain reflects his zeal to change the world through social upliftment and community welfare.
Despitea humble background and limited means, his late father had made social work an innate part of his and his siblings’ childhoods. Perhaps, unknowingly, he had also nurtured Dr Praharaj’s giving spirit and his need to make a meaningful difference.
Today, as the CEO of the Dadabhai Group of Companies and Founder of the Bahrain Odia Samaj, Dr. Praharaj has become an invaluable asset to the Kingdom’s expat community. His corporate success has not overshadowed his genuine desire to transform the lives of others. Throughout the COVID-19 crisis, he played a pivotal role in orchestrating relief efforts in close coordination with the Indian Embassy, including organising direct repatriation flights to Odisha, advocating for the rightful dues of distressed employees, and offering invaluable moral support to fellow Indian nationals facing hardships. A beacon of hope, he remains just a call or text away for any distressed Indian national in need.
Hailing from the same district as Madam President Draupadi Murmu, the first indigenous President of India, Dr. Praharaj admits he finds her journey beyond inspiring. It motivated him further on his own path of service and helping all but especially those who came from his home-state, Odisha. “Simplicity and humility are trademarks of my community. At large, Eastern India is filled with ordinary souls with extraordinary dreams. It is these dreams that I am committed to igniting and empowering,” says Dr. Praharaj, now fuelled by his own dedication to create a positive impact on the world.
His selfless efforts have earned him recognition and accolades, including being appointed as the Honorary Goodwill Ambassador for the Kingdom of Bahrain by the President of Vishva Odisha Foundation and Speaker of the Odisha Legislative Assembly, Dr. Surjya Narayan Patro. This appointment came as part of the Global Odia Awakening Campaign, an initiative to promote Brand Odisha and uplift the state. He was also awarded the prestigious Shrambandhu Samman – an honour bestowed upon him for giving his voice to the voiceless among the migrant community – by the Governor of Andhra Pradesh, Mr Biswabhusan Harichandan at the 9th Foundation Day of the Kalinga Bangalore Foundation during 2022. Furthermore, he has been honoured by numerous credible social Institutions such as the Interview Times - Top 20 Inspirational
Personalities of Odisha, Living Legends of Odisha, Kalinga Gaurav Samman and the Shree Samman from the Parichay Foundation under the patronage of the Ministry of Culture, Government of Odisha.
Apart from his humanitarian endeavours, Dr. Praharaj has focused on uniting the vibrant Odia diaspora in Bahrain. As the Vice President of the prestigious Bahrain India Art & Cultural Society, Chief Patron of Sanskriti, Bahrain and Founder Director of the Foundation of Global Odia Diaspora, he has brought together various global Odia associations under the stewardship of OSA-USA and OSUK-UK. Through vibrant exhibitions of handcrafted art from Odisha, cultural exchange programmes and celebrations like Odisha Day under the patronage of the esteemed Embassy of India, he has enabled a seamless flow of heritage and art between Bahrain and Odisha, bridging the gap between home and the host country for his community.
“I am grateful to His Majesty and the Government of this beautiful island for the support and cultural freedom given to the expatriate community, truly imbibing the spirit of ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam’ - the world is one big family,” says Dr. Praharaj
Dr. Praharaj’s relentless pursuit of social welfare stems from his determination to change the world, one life at a time. Inspired by his own experiences and the exceptional journey of Madam President, he stands as a remarkably compassionate man of his words. With a heart that knows no boundaries and a spirit that seeks to empower and uplift, Dr. Arun Kumar Praharaj is a true inspiration for all, driving positive change and making the world a better place for everyone living by the sole principle of ‘Service to humanity is service to God.’

The most influential Sufi in the region, Miir Sayyed Ali Hamadani arrived in 1372 with 700 disciples and spread Islam and the principles of the Kubrawi Sufi order, earning popularity among the territory’s people.
Hamadani’s teachings emphasised oneness of God, purity, God-fearing piety, and unity. He contributed to various fields such as philosophy, jurisprudence, ethics, and crafts.
Hamadani’s teachings helped in the valley’s development and reintroduced an indigenous religious order called Rishism or Rishi request—a Hindu-Muslim syncretic custom combining Sufism and ancient Vedic practices. These two ideologies blended over the years promoting peace, harmony, and fraternity amongst all, regardless of religion. The amalgamation of Sufism and Hinduism resulted in the concept of Kashmiriyat, representing the collective identity of the people and
emphasising religious tolerance.
Preserving Cultural Heritage
The preservation of Jammu and Kashmir’s historic sites, promoting traditional arts and crafts, and documenting indigenous knowledge and folklore is of utmost importance. Mir Junaid’s book sheds light on the region’s heritage and calls for preservation of its captivating past, which will enrich the lives of its people and foster appreciation for diversity and harmony in a more promising future.

You can now enjoy a Gujarati thali with over 20 delightfully delicious items at Delmon International Hotel located in Manama.
It’sno secret that India has the highest vegetarian population in the world with over 275million Indians opting for meatfree dishes. With such a significant Indian population in Bahrain, it comes as no surprise that, here too, we have a noteworthy number of vegetarians and vegans.
On the occasion of India’s Independence Day, Delmon International Hotel which is located opposite Gold City in Manama, is very proud to launch their purely vegetarian Gujarati thali. Executive Chef Mahendra Shekawat, who hails from Rajasthan, will be working handin-hand with the renowned Gujarati Chef, Narendra Karena, who hails from the bustling city of Ahmedabad to serve mouth-watering Gujarati favourites.
An estimated two out of three Gujaratis are vegetarians so, naturally, they are quite adept at incorporating leafy greens, root vegetables, pulses, and even fruit into their daily meals. As part of the special thali at Delmon International Hotel, diners can enjoy over 20 scrumptious items prepared from scratch.
“We are proud to reintroduce the Gujarati thali with Chef Narendra who is quite popular among Bahrain’s Gujarati community,” says Chef Shekawat, who has a collective 18 years of experience in Bahrain’s culinary industry. “India is extremely famous for its cuisine and it brings us great joy to present a thali as special as this. In fact, we have made arrangements with our suppliers to receive only the very freshest of ingredients imported from India.
Even the ghee we will be using in our food will be from the world-renowned Indian brand Amul!” he says.
The hotel has every intention to stand out from other Indian restaurants through this unique offering. “We will be serving the purest of food – known in India as sattvic -free from preservatives, artificial colour and processed flavour enhancers. In fact, our food will not only be vegetarian, but Jain meaning that we won’t be using onions or garlic in our food,” says Chef Karena proudly.
Having presented the very best of Gujarati staples right here in Bahrain for over 10 years, Mr. Karena is happy to present this phenomenal thali and will be paying attention to the finer details. “Oondios, Moong Thal, Gujarati Thepla and Pathra can be enjoyed through this thali. I will also be serving a very special Sitaphal Basundhi, which is a famous cold pudding made with custard apples, Beetroot Halwa and Jalebi. And, of course, a very traditional buttermilk beverage, Chaas, will be served too. It’s here that people can enjoy the best of desi flavours,” he says.
The fact of the matter is, vegetarian food in some cases can lack
creativity, but the same cannot be said about Indian vegetarian food. This thali is sure to be a hit in the books of not only the Indian diaspora residing in Bahrain but vegans and vegetarians across the island looking for a divinely flavourful dish!
The special Gujarati thali will be available at lunch from 12.30pm to 3.30pm on Friday and Saturday. Rajasthani specialities can be added to the thali for a nominal charge.

MAKING THE FIRST 5 YEARS COUNT! MAKING THE FIRST 5 YEARS COUNT!
Kangaroo Kids International Preschool, Bahrain Buds Kindergarten, has kick started a movement in Bahrain that will transform the face of all kindergartens. The BahrainThisMonth team finds out what makes this kindergarten so special.
Picking a kindergarten can be a daunting task for parents. It’s your child’s first step into the world of education, and all you can think of is finding an environment where they’ll be just as loved as they are at home, while learning and developing.
Here’s where Kangaroo Kids International Preschool comes in. The kindergarten’s vision is to “spark human greatness in every single child by discovering and then nurturing each child’s unique gift.”
“We have pioneered ‘a whole new concept’ in learning because the conventional rote system of learning will not equip children with skills and abilities for the new age of information,” explains Kangaroo Kids International Preschool Principal, Diana Patrick. “The iCan learning system has revolutionised early education delivery for young learners, leading the way with groundbreaking pedagogy and learnercentric approach to early education delivery. We prepare our children to not just live but also thrive.”
“We want children to gain knowledge and effectively be able to apply it. Our fantastically planned and executed curriculum design provides an emotionally safe environment that encourages children to reflect, think and apply while having lots of fun. This is why this brand has been a raging success among children and parents,” explains Ms. Patrick.
Future Skills and Habits for the Little Ones
The kindergarten’s curriculum includes strategies and detailed experiential activities that range across the content areas of literacy, mathematics, science, social science, aesthetics, and socio-emotional development. It carefully scaffolds learning to develop the nine future skills and 15 habits of the mind in every child essential for flourishing in life and the careers of tomorrow. “Our children shift from being passive receivers to active readers, evaluators, thinkers, and innovators as they explore while learning,” she says.
According to the World Economic Forum, as the world is constantly evolving and changing, we can neither predict nor plan for how the future world will be for our children. “What we can do is prepare them for it by developing their nine future skills which includes personal awareness, responsibility, global mindset, digital literacy, critical thinking, and problem solving. These future skills will equip children to make choices that will lead towards a life of success and fulfillment,” she explains.
As for the 15 habits of the mind (adapted from
Arthur Costa’s work Developing Minds), the kindergarten focuses on children’s persistence, innovation, creativity, and continuous learning, that are developmentally appropriate. “Children as young as two need to be exposed to these practices with deliberate practices and focused attention so they can grow as thinkers and thrive in the face of unprecedented change,” she says.
Ready to Thrive
“We believe that children learn best when they are given a choice and voice within an emotionally safe and fun environment. They blossom when they are nurtured by those who have their best interests at heart and use evidence-based teaching-learning strategies that are supported by extensive research and up-to-date methods,” she says.
Kangaroo Kids understands that 90 percent of brain development happens in the first five years, and believes in making the first five years count. Therefore, Kangaroo Kids has reimagined and recreated new learning experiences for young minds to make their first five years count!
RASOIBY VINEET THE
EXPERIENCE
With a special focus on India in the month’s edition, we were thrilled to review one of the very finest Indian restaurants in the Kingdom, Rasoi by Vineet. Located at Gulf Hotel Bahrain, this spectacular restaurant is operated by none other than the Michelin star Chef Vineet Bhatia. Simply put – this was a culinary experience.
If you’ve been an avid reader of Bahrain This Month, chances are you’ve read my reviews on my dining experiences before. I’ve often mentioned that Bahrain has no dearth of phenomenal restaurants covering a wide range of cuisines, and that they persevere to provide residents and visitors with a unique dining experience. Experience. There’s that word again. It begs the question: What criteria would a restaurant have to meet to define your visit as a dining experience?
The dining area of Rasoi by Vineet is a world of its own. The warm, palatial interiors are
embellished with stunning gold accents, beautiful chandeliers and unique motifs throughout. The fact that diners can watch the culinary team perfect their creations makes dining here even more exciting.
To begin our dinner, we were served crisp papad with an assortment of chutneys: beetroot, mint and mango. We happily whet our appetite before being presented with a delicious vegetable tiki on a bed of sweet corn and green pea salad. It was crisp, warm and had delicate flavours – just the perfect appetiser.
One of the staples of Indian cuisine is chaat, which for some, brings on waves of nostalgia. Personally, chat is reminiscent of being on summer holiday in Mumbai, devouring a plate of Dahi Sev Puri with my cousins on a rainy day as my mum and aunt chatted away. So the idea of a fine dining version of chaat was exciting. What new memories would I soon associate with it?
We were served two chats with Rasoi’s unique take: Gulab Puri Chaat and Samosa Ragda Chaat. Made with beetroot, the Gulab Puri Chaat had a beautiful ruby red shade to it and brilliantly combined the flavours of beetroot, crisp sev, cool yogurt and fresh pomegranate. The Samosa Ragda Chaat on the other hand was practically addictive and plays on all the strengths of chat. Warm cheese samosas are rested on a bed of perfectly spiced chick peas, topped with sev and generously drizzled with sweet and spicy chutneys, and yogurt. It had a medley of flavours – spicy, sweet, salty and tart – while the melted cheese was near comforting.
As part of our starters we were served a classic Punjabi Chicken Tikka with North Indian spices. Grilled to perfection, these tikkas were astonishingly juicy and had clearly been marinated for hours for an even flavour throughout. This was followed by the delicious Mustard Paneer Steak, made with the renowned Indian cottage cheese. The firm, yet creamy cheese went very well with the cherry tomato and sesame chutney.
This was followed by Charcoal Smoked HoneyMustard Salmon which was very creatively plated with a side of edamame mouli (raddish) and a dollop of cucumber raita. The salmon is smoked in-house and complements the cool raita and crisp radish spirals.
Through their main courses, we got to enjoy the team’s expertise when it comes to melding world-renowned Indian spices and ingredients. Rasoi by Vineet’s range of stews and gravies are best enjoyed in the company of your loved ones so you may tuck into a variety of dishes, mixing and matching them with fresh naan or delicious biriyanis
What an absolute spread was presented to us - Spinach Saag with Cashew Crusted Paneer Koftas, Kashmiri Lamb Shank Rogan Josh, Dal Maharani- Black Lentil Stew, Butter Chicken, a vegetarian Dum biriyani and hot naan. The lamb shank was fall-off-the-bone tender and absolutely divine with its rich gravy. The Paneer Kofta and Dal Makhani are a great demonstration of Indian cuisines ability to create mouth-watering vegetarian dishes. Both possessed layers of flavours to satisfy the most discerning of palates. Finally, the Butter Chicken had everything you would hope to expect of this classic – it was creamy with tender pieces of chicken and a hint of sweetness.
In a final demonstration of their creative flair, the culinary team presented us with two delectable desserts: a Gulab Jamun Terrine
with Kulfi, and a Rose Rabdi Cake with Rose Jalebi. These were both a treat for the eyes and our tastebuds. The colours and the finer details were mesmerising and further elevated by just the perfect amount of sweetness. The cool Gulab Jamun terrine was a unique take on a classic and one that we could get used to. The Rose Rabdi Cake was definitely something special, and a clear favourite for the table. The flavour was distinct while the thick full-bodied Rabdi made it hard to resist another bite. A layer of cream, delicious jalebis and sprinkling of pistachios has earned this dessert a reputation for being absolutely sensational.
This review would be amiss if I didn’t mention the warm hospitality of restaurant manager Mr Srinivas and his team. We were well taken care of throughout our dinner and were presented with meticulously crafted mocktails made by their talented mixologist. We sipped and savoured a Ginger Coriander Lemonade, Rose Mojito and a unique Peru drink which even had the punch of red chilli and spices. Each was presented with finesse and adorned with cucumber ribbons, dehydrated fruit or fresh sprigs of mint leaves.
By the end of dinner we had a new found appreciation for Indian fine dining. You enjoy impeccable service in a beautiful environment with calming music in the background, all while appreciating the depth and layers of textures, flavour profiles, temperatures and respectfully playful use of ingredients. Rasoi by Vineet does not give you just another meal but rather a carefully curated dining experience… one that rightfully deserves the credit of being labelled an experience.
I am truly honoured to have Rasoi in Bahrain, for this opportunity to showcase the rich culinary heritage of India in such a welcoming and cosmopolitan environment. The warm hospitality and appreciation for flavours here have truly inspired me to push the boundaries of Indian cuisine. I am excited to share my passion with the people of Bahrain and with my team will endeavour to create memorable dining experiences.”

ALL ABOUT RICKSHAWS!
As part of Bahrain This Month’s special India in Bahrain feature, Kristian Harrison looks at one of the cultural cornerstones of Indian motoring, the rickshaw! A ubiquitous staple of the country’s roads, they are the most popular form of motorised transports in towns and cities.
of the pullers grew and the obvious symbolism of class distinctions became an embarrassment.
huge reduction in pollution in cities such as New Delhi and Kolkata.
The term ‘rickshaw’ originates from the Japanese word ‘jinrikisha’, which is ‘human-powered vehicle’ in Japanese. Indeed, it was there that the very first rickshaws were invented as a two- or threewheeled passenger vehicles with a doorless, chair-like body, generally pulled by one person carrying one passenger. The first rickshaw is documented as being created by Izumi Yosuke in 1869 at the onset of a technological boom in the country.
In the late 19th century, hand-pulled rickshaws became an inexpensive, popular mode of transportation across Asia. Peasants who migrated to large Asian cities often worked first as a rickshaw runner, although it was one of the deadliest professions of the time due to the crippling exhaustion involved.
Rickshaws first appeared in India in around 1880, first introduced in Simla by the Christian missionary, Reverend J. Fordyce. At the turn of the century they were introduced in Calcutta and by 1914 were a conveyance for hire.
With the rapid advancements in technology in the early 20th century, pulled rickshaws quickly became obsolete as automated cars and trains became widely available. Furthermore, they were actually banned in numerous countries as a general consciousness about the treatment
Enter the era of the auto rickshaw. The look will be familiar to anyone who has visited eastern Asia; a sheet-metal body or open frame resting on three wheels; a canvas roof with drop-down side curtains; a small cabin at the front for the driver operating handlebar controls, and a space at the rear for usually a maximum of three passengers.
The Mazda-Go, a three-wheel open ‘truck’ released in 1931 is often considered the first of what became auto rickshaws. Numerous companies from across Asia began to develop their own version through the year, but in the modern market India is by far and away the largest manufacturer. Bajaj Auto alone the largest individual producer, sold 780,000 last year.
Furthermore, steps have been taken to make rickshaw travel safer for women in India. Many state governments have launched the Pink Rickshaw initiative, whereby women travel on pink rickshaws without the fear of being harassed or assaulted, with features such as a panic button and GPS tracking fitted as standard.
Auto rickshaws provide cheap and efficient transportation throughout India. Modern auto rickshaws run on compressed natural gas (CNG) or liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) due to government regulations, which has seen a
Modern electric auto rickshaws, which run on electric motors and have high torque and loading capacity with better speed, are also gaining popularity in India. Many rickshaw drivers are moving to electric three-wheelers as the prices of CNG is very high and the government is also taking actions to convert current CNG and diesel rickshaws to electric rickshaws as part of the push for e-mobility through the national FAME-II scheme.
As of the latest figures, in 2022 India has about 2.4 million battery-powered, threewheeled rickshaws on its roads. Some 11,000 new ones hit the streets each month, with the main hindrance to adoption being the paucity of charging stations. With only 2,800 currently in India, it’s clear that more work needs to be done to keep this Indian icon powering along.
THE FIRST ROADGOING CARS IN THE FERRARI XX PROGRAMME
Based on the Ferrari SF90 Stradale, the new special limited series SF90 XX Stradale was unveiled alongside its SF90 XX Spider counterpart. To be built in just 799 and 599 examples respectively, these new V8-powered PHEVs represent the latest and most extreme example of a concept of special versions, which pushes the performance of Ferrari’s roadgoing models to new levels.
Drawing on its experience in both of these spheres, Ferrari decided to create a road-legal car which embodies the maximum expression of the two programmes’ engineering concepts. The SF90 XX Stradale is based on the supercar in the range, the SF90 Stradale, but raises its already impressively exhilarating track and on-the-limit driving experience to new heights. Performance is boosted thanks to its impressive 1,030 cv (30 more than the SF90 Stradale), specific software logics and the use of radical new aerodynamics solutions, including a fixed rear spoiler – the first to appear on a road-going Ferrari since the days of the F50 – which delivers an unparalleled 530 kg of downforce at 250 km/h.
Over the past 20 years or so, Ferrari has developed the XX Programme to offer a select group of expert client drivers extreme cars that are not homologated for the road, but that can be driven at the very limit on the track. All of the models produced by the programme have proved a huge success, with the most recent addition being the FXX-K EVO.

THE NEW SERIES OF MERCEDES-BENZ DREAM CARS
Mercedes-Benz is continuing its long tradition of sporty, elegant dream cars with a new, independent series. The new CLE Coupé uses the conceptual and technical innovations of the C-Class and E-Class. With its expressive design, exclusive comfort equipment for maximum individuality and confident, sporty driving performance, the new two-door car goes its own way.
The progressively forward-leaning front section (“shark nose”) with a low-slung bonnet, flat LED headlights with a unique design and the newly designed, threedimensional radiator grille ensure an athletic yet extremely elegant appearance. The strongly contoured power domes on the long hood refer to the powerful engines with up to six cylinders. In the side view, a distinctive shaped edge structures the powerful volume. This character line runs from the headlight to the exterior mirror and from the rear light to the door handle.
At 4,850 millimetres long, 1,860 millimetres wide and 1,428 millimetres high, the new two-door is the largest coupé in the mid-size segment. With its dimensional concept – in particular the 25-millimetre longer wheelbase – the CLE Coupé offers significantly more space than the C-Class Coupé. The rear passengers in particular benefit from 10 millimetres more headroom, 19 millimetres more shoulder and elbow room and 72 millimetres more knee room while the trunk volume offers 60 litres more volume.
The market launch of the CLE Coupé will start in Europe in November. The CLE Cabriolet will follow next year for open-air connoisseurs. With the new dream car series, Mercedes-Benz is fulfilling the wishes of many customers in the C and E class segments.
THE FRAUSCHER X PORSCHE ELECTRIC SPORTS BOAT
Renowned sports car manufacturer Porsche has collaborated with Austrian Frauscher Shipyard to develop an exclusive electric sports boat. Equipped with the drive technology of the future Porsche Macan electric, the 8.67-metre-long daycruiser based on the Frauscher 858 Fantom Air offers excellent driving characteristics.
The Frauscher x Porsche 850 Fantom Air is based on the Frauscher 858 Fantom Air daycruiser, whose 8.67-metre long and 2.49-metre wide hull it is taking over practically unchanged. Porsche has optimised and further developed its drive technology designed for road vehicles for use on the water. This enables the use of the state-of-the-art automotive drive technology of the Premium Platform Electric (PPE) on which the future all-electric Macan will be based as the first Porsche model. The technology includes the lithium-ion high voltage battery with a total capacity of around 100 kWh, a permanently excited synchronous electric motor (PSM) of the latest generation, and the related power electronics.
AUDI SIGNS SIMULATOR DRIVER FOR FORMULA 1 POWER UNIT
Audi is taking the next step in the development of the power unit for the Formula 1 project by signing a simulator driver. In 2026, the brand with the four rings is going to enter the top category of motorsport.
Swiss racing pro Neel Jani is going to support the development of the Audi power unit with his versatile experience from various motorsport programmes. “I am delighted to accompany Audi on their way into Formula 1. It is both an honour and a great responsibility to be involved in a project of this magnitude at an early stage,” says Neel Jani. As a former test and reserve driver at Red Bull Racing, Jani spent many hours in a Formula 1 simulator. As a race driver in endurance racing, he gathered valuable experience in a hybrid race car. As a member of the Porsche factory team, he won the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) in 2016 as well as the famous 24-hour race at Le Mans.
Porsche aims to be a leader in sustainable mobility. And this ambition is not to be limited to racing and road cars alone in the future. The collaborative electric yacht intends to set standards on the water with its typical Porsche E-Performance. Delivery of a first edition of 25 units is set to begin in 2024.
EDTECH ON A NEW PATH
Afew weeks ago, I chanced upon a very interesting TED talk by the founder of the EdTech giant Khan Academy. It talked about how AI in education, in a format we currently know it, is just the tip of the iceberg. AI can help students learn better, can respond to actual problems and even nurture students’ learning process and ability to think.
What makes this even more interesting is the fact that AI itself is simply a part of the EdTech ecosystem. The global edtech market size was valued at USD255 billion in 2021 and is expected to reach USD605 billion by 2027. The market today covers content development, virtual worlds, adaptive learning, corporate learning, smart classrooms, and a host of other micro learning systems.
Smart classrooms are propelling demand with the use of animations, multimedia, audio, video, graphics, educational content, smart interactive whiteboards and more. Educational software tools such as IXL, Teach Your Monster to Read, TT rockstars etc. are used as part of classroom curriculum in modern teaching systems and intuitively engage with students based on their abilities.
The edtech market in the Middle East and Africa (MEA) region is expected to reach USD7 billion by 2027, as schools across the region
adopt technology solutions and products in classrooms. This growth is being driven by the increasing demand for accessible learning, which is being met by digital technologies like AI, VR, blockchain, and IoT. These technologies are improving the learning process for both learners and teachers by making learning more personalised, immersive, secure, and data-driven.
International edtech companies are rapidly entering the Middle East and Africa (MEA) region. For example, Cuemath, a Google education partner, recently entered the region with its math learning platform that provides videos, concept sheets, puzzle cards, and simulations. Other Indian edtech startups, such as Kidsbuddy and Brightchamps, have also announced plans to enter the MEA region. The acquisition of UAE’s Knowledge Planet by Indian edtech unicorn Physics Wallah is another sign of the growing potential of the MEA edtech market.
In addition to the traditional education market, there is also a large and growing market for corporate learning in the MEA region. The worldwide spending on corporate learning is estimated to be around USD320 billion, and the MEA region is expected to see significant growth in this area. Companies in the MEA region are increasingly looking for

new tools and delivery systems to support their onboarding, sales training, leadership development, and compliance programmes.
Bahrain and the GCC are abuzz with EdTech developments. In March, the Bahrain Institute of Banking and Finance (BIBF) announced the launch of its metaverse campus, which intends to provide students and professionals in business and finance with an immersive learning experience supported by the latest technology. The Nasser Vocational Training Centre also announced its Smart Coders initiative, which aims to train approximately 2,000 adults annually to write computer code. By 2027 the initiative is expected to train a total of 10,000 Bahrainis to enter the workforce as programmers.
New entrant Lumofy, which provides personalised learning to corporates recently raised USD500,000 from Hope Ventures, together with Saudi angel Investors and JEO Capital. Local incubator Kickstart has also launched a programme to assist EdTech entrepreneurs by providing comprehensive training through hybrid platforms. Using technology, mentors will be able to teach, provide videos and interact with founders seamlessly to provide a diverse learning experience and enable them to realistically launch or expand. Bahrain based regional player Playbook uses a digital platform to connect female learners with specialised mentorship
and learning systems. And these are just a few examples of the many EdTech developments happening in Bahrain and the GCC.
With the expansion of universities, videobased learning systems and international collaboration, education is taking on a new shape in the region. The scope of expansion seems almost unlimited in a region with a young, growing school population combined with an expanding corporate environment. Education is a traditionally brick and mortar basic industry; however, today, there is nothing
basic about the offerings and I suspect, in a few years, I may be writing about a whole new education ecosystem. Time will tell, but the indicators are very promising.

Utilising blockchain technology applications to enhance cybersecurity in the financial technology sector is now of high significance. This was stated by Information Security Manager and BCP Officer at KFH-Bahrain, Hasan Muhi, during a seminar titled ‘Cybersecurity in Fintech in Bahrain’ which was organised by the IT systems integrations and managed cyber security company, NGN International.
“Blockchain technology offers significant security advantages by storing financial data in an encrypted manner across a network of devices, making it highly resistant to cyberattacks. This technology represents one of the latest and most effective methods for safeguarding companies and institutions against the growing risks of cyber threats including

data loss, unauthorised access, and data theft,” explains Mr. Muhi.
Given the escalating complexity of cyber threats, institutions are compelled to embrace technologies that enable swift and effective detection, and mitigation of attacks. “Cuttingedge cybersecurity applications facilitate early detection of threats, enable prompt and efficient response capabilities, and elevate overall cybersecurity levels,” he concludes.
SCW SECRETARY-GENERAL HIGHLIGHTS FEMALE ENTREPRENEURS’ ROLE IN BOOSTING ECONOMY
Secretary-General of the Supreme Council for Women (SCW), Hala AlAnsari, has highlighted the major role played by female entrepreneurs in the economies of the Middle East region.
In an opinion piece published by the World Economic Forum titled ‘Empowering female entrepreneurs in the Middle East’, Ms. Al-Ansari states: “Most science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) graduates in the Middle East are women and tapping into this valuable resource is a key focus for the region. Increased female participation in the workforce could add USD2.7 trillion to the region’s economy by 2025.”
In her article, the SCW Secretary-General called for creating an ecosystem for female entrepreneurs. “Women entrepreneurs are going to supercharge
the economies of the Middle East, as the share of women in professional and technical jobs, led by female entrepreneurs, will more than double by 2030,” she says.
The article further highlights private sector initiatives which she believes are essential such as ‘She WINS Arabia’ – an initiative of the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) which supports almost 200 female-led start-ups in the region.
Concluding her opinion article, the SCW Secretary-General said: “The full potential of female entrepreneurs is ready to be unleashed. Enabling the Middle East’s highly-educated women could add trillions to the economy and ensure social stability.”

FOO FIGHTERS BUT HERE WE ARE
Verdict:
An emotional, cathartic release from the rock titans.
What’s the story?
The 11th Foo Fighters album is undoubtedly the band’s most emotional yet. Longtime drummer Taylor Hawkins unexpectedly died in March 2022 and in the aftermath, the band cancelled everything planned for the rest of the year, largely going quiet and leaving its future uncertain. In December 2022, a statement was released confirming that Foo Fighters would continue, but that they were “going to be a different band going forward.” Frontman Dave Grohl performed the drums on the album, his first drumming credit on a Foo Fighters studio album since 1997. Lyrically, the album explores Grohl coming to terms with not only Hawkins’ death, but his mother, Virginia, who also died in 2022.
Worth a listen?
Back in 1994, Grohl created the first Foo Fighters album while he was mourning the death of Nirvana bandmate Kurt Cobain, the first move in a career comprised of constant motion. Grief wasn’t central to that album, but it certainly is the case on But Here We Are. Loss and sorrow flow through the album’s imagery, culminating in the cascading closer ‘Rest,’ whose refrain of “you can rest now/you will be safe now” is easy to interpret as a message to Hawkins. Grohl doesn’t dwell in the darkness; he faces his bereavement directly, with as clear an eye as he can muster. The candour in the lyrics is matched by the immediacy of the music.
Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds
Council Skies
Underneath its handsome veneer, Council Skies demonstrates that former Oasis member Noel Gallagher learned some tricks during his time wandering in the psychedelic wilderness, figuring out how to add enough colour and texture to his arrangements so they don’t seem cautious or stuffy. It’s a subtle difference but an important one, letting the songs on Council Skies breathe without drifting into the distance. The change is evident from the start, when the strummed acoustic guitars at the core of ‘I’m Not Giving Up Tonight’ get decorated with a delicate piano that provides a bed for strings and vocals that come in by the chorus.
Niall Horan
The Show
Three years and a pandemic between releases, Niall Horan turns the heartbreak around on his vibrant, matured The Show. His third full-length, the quick ten-track burst finds the former One Directioner in a period of positive growth, leaving his twenties behind and grounding himself in a more comfortable space where he can play with genres and have some fun. With each subsequent album, Horan just gets better and better. The Show is his most immediate and engaging set to date, endlessly listenable and full of heart and charm.
Queens of the Stone Age
In Times New Roman...
QOTSA’s latest release is steered toward their essence, laying down a foundation of gnarled, greasy guitars that allow the band either to soar to the horizons or plummet to earthy depths. While the thick, churning grind may feel familiar, it never seems staid, not when the band relies on clouds of vocal harmonies to push them onto a psychedelic astral plane, a shift that can amount to the subtle colourings of ‘Time & Place’ or be as startling as the chorus of ‘Emotion Sickness.’

Final Fantasy XVI
VERDICT:
A glorious return to form for the famous series. RATING:
WHAT IS IT?
Final Fantasy XVI is an action role-playing game developed and published by Square Enix. The 16th main instalment in the Final Fantasy series is set on Valisthea, a world divided between six nations who hold power through access to magical Crystals and Dominants, humans who act as hosts for each nation’s Eikon. Tensions between the nations escalate as a malady dubbed the Blight begins consuming the land. Clive Rosfield, guardian to his younger brother Joshua, witnesses his kingdom destroyed and goes on a revenge quest in pursuit of the dark Eikon Ifrit.
GAMEPLAY
The game features segmented open environments and an action-based combat system involving both melee and magic-based attacks. There are also recurring series features including Chocobos and summoned monsters called Eikons, which are both fought as bosses and used through channelling their power in combat.
GRAPHICS
FFXVI is arguably the best-looking game on the PS5. Compared to previous titles, the most obvious improvement that’s been made is to the lighting. A scene where Clive is sitting next to a campfire is much more realistically lit, with the fires even making his hair look brighter and his face shadowed. Then there’s a scene with ice goddess Shiva, with her jewellery and magic crystals glittering with the latest ray tracing technology. Generally, textures just look a lot more detailed and less washed out than any other game released on PS5 so far, it’s a true technical marvel.
STREET FIGHTER 6
Street Fighter 6 is the latest entry in the iconic fighting game series by Capcom. The experience spans across three distinct game modes featuring World Tour, Fighting Ground and Battle Hub. The game offers a highly evolved combat system with three control types – Classic, Modern and Dynamic – allowing you to quickly play to your skill level with a diverse roster of 18 fighters, including legendary fan favourites Ken, Ryu and Chun-Li.

Embark on the campaign solo or with friends, through beautifully dark settings, or explore a shared world where players can meet in towns to trade, team up to battle world bosses or descend into PVP zones to test their skills against other players.
LAYERS OF FEAR
The canvas awaits its final brushstrokes. The stage calls for its lead actor. The novel needs its final chapter. It’s time to face your fears. One. Last. Time. The Layers of Fear series, which has left a mark on narrativedriven first-person psychological horror games, returns to tell its final spinechilling story The game is built on Unreal Engine 5 and supports HDR and 4K resolution to make the stunning visuals, and your nightmarish experience, as immersive and realistic as possible.

MORE ALIVE THAN EVER BEFORE
A rollercoaster lifestyle, diagnosis of two autoimmune conditions and a near-death experience led Amreeta Mohandas to a healing
Ayurvedic lifestyle. The big corporation employee turned Ayurvedic wellness coach tells Farah Baig about being back from the brink of death, the lifechanging effects of Ayurveda and her quest to guide busy women on their wellness journey.
Progress is often equated with modernity although the two couldn’t be more different. Sometimes, following what could be considered “modern” can in fact have devastating effects on our health and overall lives. Like most of us, Amreeta Mohandas once embodied society’s image of a highly successful, modern-day career woman; she was born and raised in the Middle East and was steadily climbing the corporate ladder at a big firm unknowingly neglecting herself.
“I can say that I’ve had my fair share of experience leading the big corporate life. I worked in the financial department of a multinational company which sold the industry’s most popular processed food – a life that was far from my ethos of healthy living,” she says.
“I can happily say that I have left the corporate lifestyle behind consciously to pursue Ayurveda and the passion to help women heal. This is especially in the case of women with chronic conditions who I persevere to help take their health and healing back into their hands,” she says with a smile.
Where It All Started
Today, Amreeta is a doting wife and loving mother to her nine-year-old daughter, but her life might’ve followed a very different path just a few years ago. “While I enjoyed the perks and the learning that came from being in the corporate world, I was sucked into the detrimental, busy lifestyle that came with it with less sleep, irregular eating habits, long hours of sitting in front of a device or in traffic,” she says.
“I might’ve turned heads at the time, but Ayurveda and yoga weren’t a part of my vocabulary then and I never exercised,” she admits.
By 2015, soon after becoming a new parent, Amreeta was sadly diagnosed with two autoimmune conditions: Myasthenia Gravis and Rheumatoid Arthritis. “These conditions are related to muscle weakness and joint pain, which might seem simple enough, but life was horrible at this point. I was lost in motherhood, working 10 hours daily at my job and had two conditions of which one was rare so not many doctors knew anything about,” she says wistfully.
“While my friends were bar hopping, I was going from hospital to hospital, looking for a good doctor and medicines that would relieve my symptoms. By this point I couldn’t walk, talk or eat like most people do. In fact, I was even bound to a wheelchair for a few days,” she adds.
Being mentally, physically and spiritually drained, she resorted to taking several allopathic medications in the hopes of finding some relief. “I was taking a very high dosage of these steroids and immunosuppressants for symptomatic relief and ended up gaining a lot of weight. The same woman that once turned heads was drawing attention for the wrong reason – pity. It hurt my self-worth.”
Her Brush with Death
By 2016, Amreeta’s health had declined further and she had experienced her first
near death experience. “I remember eating my first meal while I lay in a hospital bed in Delhi, India. I had gone through a seven-hour surgery which the team believed had gone well until I nearly lost consciousness. They soon realised that I was bleeding into my lungs,” she says.
“In a matter of minutes, they had drilled two pipes into my lungs to drain the blood. I would’ve died if I hadn’t complained that something wasn’t right,” she says of the harrowing experience. “It was that incident that changed my perception and my priorities.”
On returning to Dubai, where she lived at the time, Amreeta decided to quit her job, focus on her health and enjoy being a mother. “My baby was just one at the time this had all transpired –a very precious age with a lot of milestones and I wanted to experience it all. I was, however, still experimenting with a lot of different diets and was on several medications,” she says.
Ayurveda - A New Lease on Life
Within a year, Amreeta moved to Bahrain with her family which was where her life was about to take on a positive change. “I met Dr. Ravi at Srisoukya and Tracey Burrows, a yoga and health coach who brought Ayurveda and yoga into my life in such an easy, practical way that I loved the science. The more I learned it, the more I wanted to know. And consequentially, the more I healed myself.”
She beams about the benefits of Ayurveda and how it taught her to feed her body and mind on all levels. “For the first time in my life, I believed this was where I belonged. I couldn’t unlearn this ancient science, wanted to learn more about it and put it into practice. It was hard work but a beautiful one,” she says.
By following an Ayurvedic lifestyle, Amreeta was soon weaned off her medication within a year. She noticed positive changes: better digestion, an improved sleep pattern and vital energy levels. “I finally felt alive in my body. I felt whole and comfortable in my own skin for the first time and stronger than I ever was before,” she says.
Sharing her thoughts on Ayurveda and wellness practices rooted in India, she says: “A lot of current modern wellness trends have their roots in ancient Ayurvedic texts. This could be intermittent fasting, sipping hot lemon water or living in alignment with the circadian rhythm. It’s interesting to see what is considered Nobel prize-worthy science in recent times has been practiced for more than 5000 years by our grandparents in the villages of India for generations. It honestly fills me with pride,” she says.
Helping Busy Women
“I now focus on helping busy women as I resonate with them. I feel the challenges that
these women go through on a day-to-day basis that come in the way of healthcare, but I know how to overcome it too.”
Amreeta shares how Ayurveda is a preventive science that focuses on the root cause and how its beauty lies in its personalisation. So, Amreeta co-founded SOMAforwellness along with her friend, Swathi, to help women on their wellness journey. “An Ayurvedic regimen is not one-size-fits-all. Instead, it is tailormade and personalised for every individual. SOMAforwellness is a space for women to come heal and learn how to take care of themselves through the way they eat, sleep, breathe and move,” she states.
Amreeta is now determined to help women lead a happier, healthier and more fulfilling life and has no regrets on leaving the corporate lifestyle behind as she now wakes up with a deep sense of fulfilling her dharma. She found her sense of purpose. “I wanted to take my past experiences and the wisdom from the ancient teachings of Ayurveda and Yoga, and incorporate them into practical life skills for modern women – those steel-magnolias living in cities, seeking success and equality in the corporate world – or those go-getter mamas trucking their kids around town to endless extracurricular activities, battling busy highways downing double expressos,” she says passionately.
“I used to be exactly that kind of woman… I know how it feels,” she concludes.

CREATING A SUSTAINABLE ORGANISATION
According to Google Trends, the term ‘sustainability’ has steadily grown in popularity worldwide since early 2022. Chartered Manager, Eman Deabil (DipESG, PfMP, IPMO-P, SIP), explains the concept and breaks down how we can create a sustainable organisation.
In my article published in last month’s edition of Woman This Month, I spoke about sustainability in general and the rise of the Chief Sustainability Officer (CSO) role. I also gave you a glimpse at the history of the GCC as far as ESG is concerned. In this edition, we will cover high-level plans on how to create a sustainable organisation by looking at the organisation’s operating model.
Before I put things into perspective, let’s first explore the terminologies below:
Sustainability: This is a broader concept of how to ensure driving value over a long period of time by looking at different aspects.
Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG, for short): A term that was officially coined in 2004 with the publication of the United Nations report titled “Who Cares Wins”.
ESG normally represents the three pillars that we need to set plans and KPIs to ensure sustainability. It became the terminology used for the reporting side
of sustainability. The three pillars, along with a few examples, are:
1. Environmental: Factors related to how an organisation has an impact on nature such as climate, carbon emissions, biodiversity, water, electricity, waste, and paper.
2. Social: Factors related to how an organisation manages its relationships with its employees, customers, suppliers, and communities where it operates, such as training, inclusion, diversity, and equality.
3. Governance: Factors related to how an organisation is led and managed, such as board independence, transparency, diversity, and whistleblowing.
In many publications and literature, both terminologies (i.e., ESG and Sustainability) are being used interchangeably, and here they will be used interchangeably as well.
Operating model: This defines how an organisation operates to achieve its objectives and deliver value to its customers. In general, it encompasses four main components: processes, organisation, technology and information (POTI).
Processes Organisation Technology Information
The set of activities that an organisation performs to deliver intended value to its customers, and everything that supports this such as policies and procedures.
The people within the organisation, their capabilities, their roles and responsibilities, the structure.
The systems and tools that support the organisation’s operations and enable it to achieve its objectives.
Insights and reports that the organisation uses to make informed decisions and improve its performance.
Below are a few steps to start the journey of building a sustainable organisation by looking at the operating model components. Having said that, these components are interrelated and overlap.
Now let’s look at the operating model with an ESG lens:
Environmental Social Governance
• Examine your value chain and make sure your processes are streamlined (be they manual or digital) to drive long-term value, enable operational excellence, and reduce operating costs.
Processes
• Adopt a circular economy model to move from a linear value-chain to a circular value chain.
• Improve the process, cut redundancies, automate workflows, and create a paperless environment.
• Adopt strategies to reduce carbon footprint: work from home, apply car-pooling for employees, work with local suppliers.
• Reduce, reuse, recycle materials wherever possible.
• Switch to eco-friendly products.
Establish awareness of the importance and urgency of ‘sustainability’, create relevant training programs, and build capabilities around climate change.
Engage relevant stakeholders and train them on how to adopt sustainable practices and follow seamless processes.
Adhere to regulatory requirements, controls, and best practices.
Set the required policies to ensure maximum transparency, accountability, fairness, and equality.
Acquire sustainable technology products (the ones that consume less electricity and reduce carbon emissions).
Look at the technological resources being utilized and optimize them.
Look for alternative ways to minimise the carbon emitted from technology.
Explore automation opportunities for repetitive tasks (using robotics, for instance) to reduce manual interventions and paper.
Create a culture that embraces diversity and encourages equal opportunities.
Set a process to reward the excellent performers and reprimand the underperformers (ESG objectives and deliverables).
Train employees on how to use the available technological resources.
Partner with local suppliers, vendors, and consultants.
Clarify the roles, responsibilities, and accountabilities as far as the ESG is concerned, and set clear job descriptions and expectations.
Use technology with the intention to increase transparency and accountability, by sharing information and tracking decisions. Automate processes and reduce potential human error.
Use technology to offer a level of security to combat cyber risks or data breaches.
Set clear ESG objectives, collect relevant KPIs, targets, and initiatives, and assign owners to measure the performance. Communicate and report the performance indicators to stakeholders on a regular basis (on a defined frequency), and in a transparent manner. Support the information with evidence.
Examine the information reported and assess where you stand vis-à-vis where you want to go (target), providing justifications if needed or propose corrective actions if deemed required.
The above is just a brief blueprint on how to create a sustainable organisation; however, with sustainability comes innovation. The more we believe in creating long-term value, the more we become innovative in coming up with ideas that serve this purpose.
Meet the Terrible Eights
Does it feel like your 8-year-old is playing with dolls one second and talking back the next? It may not feel great, but it’s perfectly normal. Here’s what our parenting columnist, Ouiam El Hassani, has to say:
While parents mentally prepare themselves for the terrible twos or secretly dread the idea of their sweet baby becoming a teenager, parenting an eightyear-old may feel like the hardest age to parent because it can come as a surprise that things aren’t smooth sailing between kindergarten and early teen years.
Your child’s personality, temperament, and environment all come into play, of course, but a lot happens developmentally in the growing eight- or nine-year-old brain and body that contributes to this age-specific behavior. Although school-age children are less physically demanding than little ones, their social and emotional challenges can be complex and difficult for parents to observe.
What’s happening developmentally for children at this age? The world is opening up, and your child is getting ready to step out and explore their independence. The ages of eight and nine mark a growth spurt both mentally and physically, and especially emotionally, this
growth spurt makes it a challenging time for children and also for their parents. Eight-yearolds make big cognitive leaps as they develop more advanced language, math, and writing skills. They are working on understanding cause and effect and how things work. Morals and values are also beginning to develop. At the same time, motor skills advance, and even though they aren’t necessarily going through puberty yet, they become more conscious of their growing bodies.
Then there’s emotional development which means kids are experimenting with independence and learning who they are. They experience a growing desire to belong to a group and to find their place in the social order, whether in school, neighborhood or athletics. For this reason, social exclusion is more painful. In other words, eight- and nineyear-olds are navigating the world in entirely new ways, pushing their parents as they assert their independence. As they experiment with autonomy, you can expect your child to be extra sensitive, demanding and more difficult.
Patience
It may take a few deep breaths, but understanding that your child is in the middle of a developmental transition can help you keep cool and respond rather than react. It’s hard to be a child who wants to be a grown-up on one hand and needs a hug at the same time.
Limit social media
We know social media isn’t great for children’s mental health, but social media may even influence “tween” behavior earlier than expected. One factor that may make the life of an eight or nine-year-old more complicated and, ultimately, more difficult, is growing up in a world with more powerful social media and pervasive cultural influence. It can be challenging for children this age to compare themselves to their peers and social norms at this vulnerable age. Skip social media ideally, or have agreed-upon guidelines and open conversations about what your child sees online.
Sometimes, knowing a phase is normal and will eventually pass can ease anxiety. To help make this pre-tween phase go a little more smoothly, here are some strategies parents can employ:
Coach but don’t control
It is essential to coach and guide your child so they can learn to problem-solve and regulate their emotions. Help your child learn to identify and manage their fast-evolving emotions, a critical skill that will serve them well for life. Parents should work with their children to create age-appropriate household responsibilities. At the same time, you can foster independence by letting them try to choose their own clothing or allowing them to spend more time with friends outside of school. This allows children the opportunity to explore their new-found desire for individuality in a safe environment.
Remember
Your child needs support and boundaries even as they roll their eyes and test limits. It’s hard to be a child at this stage in the same way that it’s hard to be their parent. Plus, as you work on communication and trust at this age, you’ll create a solid foundation for your relationship as you move into the tween and teen years (and beyond).
Good luck!
your child still needs you, even if they push you away.

The Notebook. It is a remarkable movie! Extremely well-made and sentimental. Not just in the romantic sense but also the way the director does it is fantastic. It portrays the thrill, excitement, and wilderness of young love. The story is compelling from the opening credits to the closing credits. The themes portrayed in this movie were handled in a great way. The Notebook for me is the only one that completely touched me. It is wonderful to look at, has a lovely soundtrack, a touching story and a great script.
