The exhibition is a dialogue between the poet and the calligrapher, a connection between the artist’s letters and the poet’s reflections and how they embrace one single Arab identity through the lens of diverse cultures and personal experiences. Becoming a World Champion Professional Jiu Jitsu Athlete, Ali Monfaradi, has made the Kingdom of Bahrain proud with his historic win. Following years of unwavering determination, the 28-year-old athlete’s efforts came to fruition when he won the gold medal at the 2021 Jiu Jitsu World Championship. He tells Farah Baig about his achievement, his journey as an athlete and the significant role of family. 14 December 2021

W

alking into Elements Jiu Jitsu on a weekday afternoon, we couldn’t help but feel a sense of community – happy children train under the watchful guidance of trainers while proud parents looked on. Given his calm, down-to-earth demeanour, most people might not realise that the owner and Founder of Elements Jiu Jitsu Academy and Jiu Jitsu coach, Ali Monfaradi, is in fact a world champion. The seasoned athlete has competed all over the world and recently won the gold medal in the 77 kg Division at the 2021 Jiu Jitsu World Championship, organised by the Jiu Jitsu International

Federation (JJJF) in Abu Dhabi, UAE. A LOOK BACK “One would argue that Jiu Jitsu was in my DNA since the early days. For as long as I can remember, I wanted to train martial arts,” reminisces Ali Monfaradi. Like every other boy from his generation, he grew up watching martial arts movies and wished to train. “It just so happened that my entire family trains or trained but there weren’t any kids classes at the time,” he says, adding that when he first started www.bahrainthismonth.com

interview training at the age of 12 it was the beginning of classes for children in Bahrain. “And I’ve never stopped since.”

very neck and neck for a while, but I’ve been very focused and will hopefully go for the third next year,” says Ali.

By the time Ali was a young teen he decided to compete in tournaments but there were no divisions for children and teenagers. “I would just compete with the adults and needless to say, in my first few tournaments I lost and I lost and I lost until I won my very first medal, which was coincidentally at the first World Professional Jiu Jitsu Championship. I got a bronze medal, and to this day, I might say that was my most beautiful medal as it meant a great deal to me,” he says of a moment that would spur an illustrious sporting career.

When asked what he believes is the reason for his success, Ali modestly says that he doesn’t believe anything distinguishes him from the competition. “That’s a tough one; I just think that I am willing to play the long game. I need to take a pure and honest look at myself, reevaluate, see where the flaws are, see what I need to improve and such is life,” he says.

“That first medal incentivised me to go for the next one and the one after that, and before I knew it, I was a professional competitor.”

“I really don’t think there’s any secret other than grit, determination and daily sacrifice. I think the people closest to me will see that, at the very least, I embody those qualities,” he adds.

THE TIME IS NOW The world of sports is rapidly changing in Bahrain and Bahraini athletes are consistently proving that they are a force to reckon with. Hence, Ali believes that now is the best time to be an athlete in Bahrain. “There’s no denying that Bahrain’s sports have reached another level following the leadership of HH Shaikh Nasser bin Hamad Al Khalifa and HH Shaikh Khalid bin Hamad Al Khalifa who brought sports to a completely different level, not just through exposure, but also in the form of support and national participation,” he says. Ali believes that Bahraini athletes have several resources at their disposal and that the age of social media provides them with the opportunity to get recognition and respect.

THE BIG WIN Ali had previously participated at the Jiu Jitsu World Championship in 2018, then winning the bronze medal. “The gold medal is one that I’ve been chasing for a very long time. With the pandemic and whatnot, I didn’t have the opportunity to redeem myself,” says Ali. Prior to the tournament, Ali had won the Asian championship building momentum leading up to the international event. To step up his game, Ali hired a personal trainer to oversee his strength and conditioning, and another for his mobility training while the team at Elements oversaw his Jiu Jitsu training. “The tournament is based on national teams and to have the Bahrain flag at the top of the podium was not only a huge deal for me, but for our folks at home too,” says Ali. “Shortly after the medal ceremony, I received a call from His Majesty King Hamad, who congratulated me and asked me to convey his regards to my family and the entire team,” he says. “To my surprise, a few days later, we were told that we’re going to be flown into Bahrain to join them on a very special lunch.” The event was the first official visit of the President of Brazil, Jair Messias Bolsonaro to the Kingdom of Bahrain. “I received the badge of Bahrain of the second degree and honour which was bestowed upon me by HM King Hamad. I also had the opportunity to meet and speak to HE the President of Brazil, his top ministers and delegation,” says Ali who speaks fluent Portuguese. “We flew back to Abu Dhabi just a few hours later as I was still coaching and competing. It was an unbelievable day and I’m still trying to recollect some of the top moments from that experience.” THE ‘BEST ASIAN ATHLETE’ During the tournament, Ali had also won the title of ‘Best Asian Athlete’ for the second consecutive year. “The trophy doesn’t represent a single tournament run, but is rather your accumulation throughout the season. It was www.bahrainthismonth.com

interview “That being said, I’ve always felt that there was a sort of stigma that we downplay ourselves as Bahrainis, but people need to be concerned when they have a Bahraini guy in the brackets. Aside from resources, we have determination… nothing is going to stop us from achieving what we want,” he says confidently. “So, it gives me a lot of pride to be a Bahraini athlete during such a time,” he adds. THE GREATEST CHALLENGE Ali Monfaradi is now known for being an established athlete in the Kingdom of Bahrain after years of perseverance, but things weren’t always that way. “Looking back, and obviously I don’t look at these things as sacrifices, but I suppose the most difficult part was believing that I could one day have all of this - be a high-level athlete, have an academy and this entire support system,” he says.

around,” he elaborates. Elements hopes to cater to a larger portion of the population through its diverse courses, levels, training and methodology. “I believe that Jiu Jitsu is much more beneficial and we want its benefits to reach as many people as possible,” he says. COACHING ATHLETES Ali started teaching on the side throughout his competitive years when he was purely a professional competitor and began helping out with classes when he was just 16-years-old. “As long as I have the physical capacity to do it, I want to be out there getting things done. To a larger extent, I want to create more athletes who can do this, not just what I do, but better. I want to see the academy grow,” he says. With a career dotted with accolades, awards,

medals and trophies, Ali now coaches some of his students to participate at local and international tournaments. “Watching my students compete is a thousand times as stressful for me to watch than when I myself am competing. It’s my job to keep myself composed so I can perform to the best of my ability, but when I watch my students perform, I want them to do well, be happy and succeed. It’s not like you have remote control of them so there’s always that element of surprise,” he says. Reflecting on the early days of his career, Ali believes his students have more resources when compared to those available to him at the time. “I did not have the resources, the knowledge, the methodology and information that they have today. So, I believe that they have all the resources they need, not only to succeed as much as I have, but to do a lot better,” he says.

“There was a point in my life when I had nothing of the sort and had to simply believe that it will one day happen. There were many years of this and it was tough. The difficulty I would say was undeniable, but did I ever doubt that it would happen? No, it was just a matter of time to me.” “A DEMOCRATIC SPORT” Jiu Jitsu is known for being a highly inclusive sport which allows people of varying levels of fitness and athleticism to participate – molding itself into what the person requires. “What I love about Jiu Jitsu is that it’s a very democratic and approachable sport. Almost anybody can practice it. We have people with special needs, amputees, older people, younger people, kids suffering from bullying, professional athletes, women who want to learn self-defense and grown adults who just want a nice community be

FAMILY AT THE HEART OF IT ALL “My father, who’s probably my best friend, is one of the head coaches at the academy, one of my training partners and helps run the gym on a day-to-day basis,” he says. Ali graciously believes that family support has also played a significant role in his journey as an athlete. “When I talk about family support, I need to start and end with father because he always believed in me, but not in a way that applied any sort of pressure on me. Whenever I would leave a fight, the smile on his face was identical whether I lost or won those fights,” he says.

www.bahrainthismonth.com

“Obviously I had my own determination and sense of pressure to outdo myself, but I never felt that in any negative capacity from my father. He supported me no matter what and always insisted, and showed through his actions, that his main concern was that I was happy doing what I love,” he adds.

training for fun,” he adds.

Elements has grown to be a “mini family reunion” of sorts as Ali describes it. “My brother is very much in a similar capacity except he’s younger so I get to bully him a little bit. We also have a number of my cousins, some of which are assistant coaches while others are simply part of the family

“I mean that to a much larger extent; we’ve built a sense of community here and are a family. Whatever I accomplish personally as an athlete is meaningless compared to the joy I feel when I share it with my family here. I think perhaps that is my defining characteristic in one word: family.”

Having his parents, brother and cousins play a role at Elements on a daily basis has left Ali feeling quite fortunate. “You know, I always say that I’m a professional athlete, a coach, and a business owner, but above all else… I’m a family man,” he beams.

RISING TO THE CHALLENGE The BeAware app has been an indispensable tool in supporting Bahrain’s COVID-19 mitigation efforts. Bahrain This Month met with the Deputy CE, Electronic Transformation of the Information & eGovernment Authority (iGA), Dr. Zakareya Ahmed AlKhajah to shed light on the application’s success.

C

OVID-19 has proved to be one of the most challenging pandemics that the world has had to face to date. As the public health emergency of international concern changed life as we know it, countries around the world put their best foot forward to find a solution that would save lives, instill a feeling of safety among citizens and restore a sense of normality. Bahrain joined the international community’s response to mitigate COVID-19 with the adoption of the “Trace, Test, Treat” strategy, which notably attained worldwide recognition 20 December 2021

from the World Health Organisation (WHO).

the BeAware Bahrain application.

To unify and strengthen Bahrain’s response to the global pandemic, His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the Crown Prince and Prime Minister, directed the formation of a National Medical Taskforce for Combatting the Coronavirus (COVID-19). In line with HRH the Crown Prince and Prime Minister’s directives to deploy modern technologies to further the Kingdom’s COVID19 mitigation efforts, the Information & eGovernment Authority (iGA), in cooperation with the National Medical Taskforce introduced

The Start of the Journey “During the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, Bahrain capitalised on its strong ICT infrastructure to build the BeAware app which was developed to compliment national COVID19 mitigation efforts. The application centralised the latest health recommendations and international developments in one userfriendly interface, allowing users to stay up-todate with real time COVID-19 developments,” says Deputy CE, Electronic Transformation of the Information & eGovernment Authority www.bahrainthismonth.com

interview (iGA), Dr. Zakareya Ahmed AlKhajah.

digital transformation accelerates.

Due to the importance of acting swiftly to tackle the emergent threat, the iGA was keen on releasing the application as quickly as possible, with the launch of the beta version of the BeAware mobile application on March 20, 2020. “Soon after, the official version of the application was launched on March 31, 2020 and has since been downloaded over three million times,” states Dr. Alkhajah.

“We are proud that the BeAware app has designated Bahrain as a global destination for digitisation of Government services during the ongoing COVID-19 global pandemic,” Dr.Alkhajah says, taking into account how the app has fared vis-a-vis those of other countries.

“BeAware Bahrain has certainly proven to be an asset in helping authorities identify cases and save lives,” concludes Dr. Alkhajah.

Advanced Features & eServices Seven employees were involved in the creation and maintenance of the application, which has undoubtedly been a crucial element in the Kingdom of Bahrain’s efforts to quell the spread of COVID-19 through its comprehensive functionality. The BeAware application utilises advanced technologies to provide several features and eServices. “The application makes use of Artificial Intelligence technologies to alert users in the event that they approach an active or suspected COVID-19 case,” explains Dr. Alkhajah. It also utilises location data to alert individuals in the event that they approach a location an active case has visited. This is in addition to publishing health recommendations and highlighting global COVID-19 developments. “Furthermore, the BeAware Bahrain application allows users to schedule COVID-19 test appointments, access test results, and allows travellers to sign a travel deceleration form prior to departure and upon arrival, amongst 20 other services provided through the app which is available in six different languages for both iOS and Android users,” says Dr. Alkhajah. Aside from the services, the app has proved to be instrumental in furthering public awareness on COVID-19 as it publishes trustworthy and accurate information that invalidates false information on COVID-19 that may be spreading through social media and other platforms. “The app has had a pivotal role in supporting national mitigation efforts, and frontline workers, through its advanced contact tracing capabilities, and other services that allow access to health records and isolation, vaccination and medical services for all,” he adds.

The iGA and the National Medical Taskforce have consistently benchmarked successful mitigation efforts. Dr. Alkhajah acknowledged the cooperation with WHO in documenting and presenting the Kingdom’s experience. “Recently, the iGA along with the Bahrainbased World Health Organization (WHO) Office Representative, Dr. Tasnim Atatrah, highlighted the Kingdom’s experience in deploying modern technologies to support the efforts of the National Medical Taskforce through developing the framework of the BeAware Bahrain app, a unique national initiative which the Kingdom of Bahrain is proud to share with the world, contributing to global efforts to combat the COVID-19.” Following the success of the BeAware Bahrain application, the Kingdom has assisted other countries in building similar apps of their own to ensure that they can benefit from the best available practices. Turning Challenges into Opportunities The COVID-19 pandemic has clearly demonstrated the value of fast and resilient digital services. The Kingdom of Bahrain has combined emerging technologies with forward-looking policies to turn challenges presented by COVID-19 into long-term opportunities as the

User’s Experience Dr. Alkhajah emphasises that the app has impacted the everyday lives of citizens and residents in Bahrain, through the provision of wide-ranging eServices providing a one-stopshop for all that is needed or related to the global COVID-19 mitigation efforts. “The user experience is an important matter to the iGA, hence it was always taken into consideration” states Dr. Alkhajah. The iGA has received recommendations and suggestions with regards to the ‹BeAware Bahrain› app, which played an important role in revealing areas for improvement, to become flexible and adaptive to individual needs. www.bahrainthismonth.com

ITALIAN DECADENCE AT THE HEART OF JUFFAIR Wyndham Garden Manama’s quaint Italian restaurant, Trattoria, tantalises Farah Baig with its delectable Italian fare.

I

taly has contributed some of the greatest cuisine to the world of gastronomy. So, it’s no surprise that Italian cuisine has achieved a global presence and grown to be a favourite for most people. That being said, Italian food is best when quality ingredients take centre stage and are put together in an uncomplicated way. This month, we were delighted by the promise of a “truly authentic Italian experience” in the heart of Juffair at Trattoria Italian Restaurant – a cosy venue with an extremely welcoming team. To start our feast, we tucked into the Anguria alla Greca, a refreshing salad combining cool watermelon, lightly salted feta cheese, roasted pine nuts for added texture and a drizzle of balsamic reduction for a sweet finish. A good burrata relies on a simple balance of flavours and high-quality cheese. So, we were pleased when we cut into their burrata and it released a stream of cool stracciatella and cream. The Insalata Caprese con Burrata’s tomato slices, fresh Rocca leaves and flavourful pesto brought the dish together perfectly – something that is hard to come by in Bahrain when searching for a good Burrata. A visit to any Italian restaurant would be incomplete without sampling their pasta, risotto and pizza. Trattoria has quite a few choices but some stood out to us. The www.bahrainthismonth.com

Tortellini Aifrutti di Mare consists of seafood tortellini made in-house and a rich Promodoro sauce topped with generous parmesan shavings. Penne All’arrabiatta is a classic combination of penne tossed in a thick tomato sauce, chili, garlic and extra virgin olive oil – a dish that showed the restaurant’s ability to bring the best of Italian flavours, even with a simple dish. There was a wonderful depth of flavour in the sauce – rich and tomatoey with the perfect amount heat from the chili. The smooth Risotto al Funghi has to be one of the best I have tried to date with its decadent truffle butter and Porcini mushrooms. Their oven-baked Frutti Di Mare topped with fresh seafood had a pleasant kick to it with its chili flakes and served as an excellent warm up for our maincourse. To start with our mains, we enjoyed the Costolette di Agnello – a generous serving of thick lamb chops, baby potatoes and other vegetables topped off with a flavourful jus. This was followed by the Branzino alla Livornese – fresh sauteed vegetables topped with a fillet of seabass and served with a side of green pea mash. We appreciated how perfectly cooked the lamb and fish were, both moist while the lamb had an even pink colour all the way through. There’s always room for dessert, so we looked forward to the sweet selection in store for us. The caramelised pear tart was

an unusual and refreshing dessert with its light pie crust, while the Tiramisu being a classic mesmerised us with its luscious layers of marscapone. The Espresso Pannacotta had to be our favourite though. The dessert was creamy and coated the palate so you could enjoy the freshly brewed coffee flavour while savoruing the added crunch in the granita topping. Trattoria is sure to be one of our favourite Italian restaurants with its ability to bring us the best of regional Italian dishes with their finest ingredients artistically combined. We’ll be looking forward to several business lunches, their Italian Nights every Thursday and, of course, Christmas Eve Dinner. Ciao! December 2021 27

A LOOK BACK AT MOTORSPORTS IN THE MIDDLE EAST

A

ll eyes will be on the Middle East this month as the most exciting Formula 1 season in recent memory culminates with a duel in the desert. A journey that began in Bahrain in March, with Lewis Hamilton taking a thrilling victory over Max Verstappen, has taken many twists and turns on the Tarmac over the course of 22 races. Now, after the maiden race in Qatar, Saudi Arabia will host its inaugural Grand Prix on the streets of Jeddah followed by the seasonending event in Abu Dhabi, where the track layout has been altered to make overtaking easier and thus racing more exciting. The two titans are still locked in a bitter rivalry, barely anything between them, as Hamilton fights for a record eight crowns and Verstappen aims for his first. It’s amazing to see the region become such a hotbed for racing, considering 20 years ago the sport had never set foot here. From its original roots in 1950s Europe, F1 had expanded to the Americas, South East Asia and Australia in the decades since. In October 2002, the Bahrain International Circuit was just an expanse of stones and sand in Sakhir.

As the current F1 season soon comes to a close, Kristian Harrison takes a look at the history motorsports in the Middle East – starting right here in Bahrain.

Since then, the Dubai International Circuit opened in the UAE, Qatar built the Losail International Circuit which has a storied history in Moto GP motorbike racing and now a Formula 1 race under its belt, the Yas Marina Circuit in Abu Dhabi remains one of the most stunning locations in the sport, and as mentioned, the streets of Saudi are soon to have rubber and oil burned into them by these beautiful machines. Whilst other circuits may have more state-ofthe-art luxury hotels, theme parks and fancier grandstands attached to them, no one can ever take Bahrain’s legacy away from it as the home of motorsports in the Middle East. So, while the world’s focus is on our neighbours this month, don’t forget the pivotal role Bahrain had in laying the foundations in the first place and igniting a burning passion that was mere embers a generation ago. When it is all over, and regardless of who wins the crown, we’ll be back in the Kingdom in March as the roller-coaster starts all over again for the 2022 Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix. Back to where it all began.

There was just a handful of journalists to see the foundation stone laid, courtesy of Prince Andrew, Duke of York: the second-youngest son of Queen Elizabeth of the United Kingdom. Overseeing everything was Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, at the forefront of Bahrain’s drive to make a difference in the sport. Fastforward to the memorable date of April 4, 2004 – 04.04.04 – and Michael Schumacher took a scintillating victory on the 5.4km track and a golden period of growth of motorsports in the region took hold. www.bahrainthismonth.com

BENTLEY CELEBRATES CENTENARY OF FIRST WIN 100 years since the first race win for a Bentley, the winning car itself – known as EXP2 – returned to the famous Brooklands Racetrack in Surrey to lead a cavalcade of three-litre Bentleys to celebrate the centenary of its victory. EXP2 is the oldest Bentley in the world, and only the second car ever built by W.O. Bentley’s fledgling company in 1921. EXP2 led a field of 24 threelitres from across the country, which formed up on the remaining section of the banked Brooklands circuit where Bentley took its first ever win back in 1921. The car took victory in the Whitsun Junior Sprint Handicap at the hands of ‘works’ driver Frank Clement, starting a series of race wins for the three-litre model that culminated in two victories at the 24 Hours of Le Mans – Bentley’s first in 1924, driven by Clement and John Duff, and again in 1927. Between those successes, in 1925 Duff also used a three-litre to secure a total of 21 world records over the course of 24 hours. These early victories for the three-litre engrained motorsport in the foundations of Bentley, and paved for the way for more than 1,600 three-litre models to be produced and sold. The collection of three-Litres and the event itself was organised by the Bentley Drivers’ Club.

The 2021 WEC Season Concludes with Bapco 8 Hours of Bahrain one-two at BIC

T

oyota Gazoo Racing wrapped up the 2021 FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) season with a one-two in a thrilling Bapco 8 Hours of Bahrain at the Bahrain International Circuit (BIC) in Sakhir. The meeting marked the sixth and final round of this WEC campaign and was the second event in the series’ first-ever double-header. It was also the second consecutive weekend that both of Toyota’s GR010 Hybrid Hypercars claimed the top two places in the final overall classification. This time, however, it was the #8 crew of Sebastien Buemi-Kazuki NakajimaBrendon Hartley to triumph, following in the footsteps of their teammates Kamui Kobayashi-Mike Conway-Jose Maria Lopez who steered their #7 car to the win in last week’s Bapco 6 Hours of Bahrain. A gap of one minute 14.320 seconds separated the pair as they both completed a total of 247 laps in the gruelling eight-hour endurance spectacle. With the result, BuemiNakajima-Hartley claimed their third race win of the season. Kobayashi-Conway-Lopez, who earned enough points with their runner-up finish to secure the title of 42 December 2021

Hypercar World Endurance Drivers Championship. It was their second successive crown as a crew. Toyota Gazoo Racing had already sealed the Hypercar World Endurance Championship last week, making for a superb title double in 2021. Finishing third overall in the race, as well as in the Hypercar category, were Alpine Elf Matmut’s Andre Negrao-Nicolas Lapierre-Matthieu Vaxiviere in their #36 Alpine A480-Gibson. Meanwhile, winning the Le Mans Prototype (LMP) 2 class were Team WRT’s Robin Frijns-Ferdinand Habsburg-Charles Milesi driving their #31 Oreca 07-Gibson. They posted 240 laps in all. Second in class were JOTA’s #38 crew of Antonio Felix da Costsa-Roberto Gonzalez-Anthony Davidson, while teammates Tom Blomqvist-Sean Gelael-Stoffel Vandoorne in JOTA’s #28 car were third. www.bahrainthismonth.com

CELEBRATING 20 YEARS OF V12 VANQUISH Aston Martin Works – the heritage home of the great British automotive marque – has marked an important anniversary for one of the supercars created at its historic site, the original V12 Vanquish, which was revealed publicly 20 years ago. The original V12 Vanquish was widely recognised for its sublime design, exceptional power and brutish performance. “The original V12 Vanquish represented an important and timely development for our marque. It was, and is, a great super GT with all the character, style and power that is rightly expected of an Aston Martin sports car,” says President of Aston Martin Works, Paul Spires. When it was presented before an eager www.bahrainthismonth.com

audience at the 2001 Geneva Motor Show the V12 Vanquish was nothing less than the most sophisticated and technologically advanced new model yet designed, developed and built by Aston Martin. “20 years on from that debut, the V12 Vanquish remains a proud part of the marque’s heritage which we celebrate here at Newport Pagnell. It is an exceptional piece of our history, and a car that we can rightly look back on with considerable pride,” adds Mr. Spires. Incorporating what were, at the time, cutting edge technologies such as drive-by-wire throttle control and F1©-style finger-tip controlled gearshift paddles, the Newport Pagnell-built V12 Vanquish instantly became Aston Martin’s flagship model. ACQUIRING A USD2 BILLION PORTFOLIO

GFH Financial Group (GFH or the Group) has announced its successful investment in a portfolio of high quality, income yielding logistics assets leased to Amazon. In a transaction currently valued at more than US$2 billion, the portfolio, comprised of 14 mission-critical logistics assets strategically located in 11 states, is fully leased on a long-term basis to the global e-commerce giant. “The 14 assets are strategically located, purpose-built and state-of-the-art, enabling Amazon to effectively streamline the flow and delivery of goods to its massive and ever-expanding customer base across the US. We look forward to working with our industry partners in this transaction to maximise the value of the portfolio and continue to look for other opportunities to build our presence in the logistics segment of the real estate market both in the US and Europe,” says GFH Co-Chief Investment Officer – Real Estate, Nael Mustafa. Totalling more than 11 million sq. ft. of prime space, the investment sees GFH expand its portfolio of logistics assets in the US. GFH’s investment drive is based on long-term fundamentals supported by the continued growth of e-commerce, evolution of supply chain logistics and inadequate supply with construction unable to meet the current or projected requirements of the industry. Demand for warehousing space has outstripped new supply by 41 million sq. ft. in Q3 2021 as e-commerce continues to grow in the post-pandemic era. The investment by GFH was made in partnership with Preylock Holdings, alongside a club of highly reputable multi-national institutional investment firms. www.bahrainthismonth.com

REVENUE OF PAYMENTS EXPECTED TO INCREASE TO USD 485 MILLION As purchasing habits shifted offline to online and cash to non-cash following COVID-19, the payments industry subsequently suffered an impact far less severe than initially anticipated, according to a new report by Boston Consulting Group (BCG). The report, titled Global Payments 2021: All In for Growth, sheds light on how national markets will recover over the next decade, with growth set to be driven by newfound momentum – including in Bahrain. “When examining the recent economic recovery in Bahrain, the country’s payments industry has certainly played its part,” explains Mohammad Khan, Partner, BCG. “Changing consumers preferences and the emergence of various digital channels have been a key driver behind the industry’s contributions, with more fulfillment options,

digital transaction processes, and empowerment through e-commerce made possible as a result.” In line with findings published in BCG’s 19th annual analysis of the global payments industry, Bahrain shares many commonalities with other regional and international geographies, including manageable revenue losses considering recent turbulence and optimistic projections for the future. From 2015 to 2020, national payment revenues increased by 23pc to USD256 million, and they could reach USD485 million by 2030. Furthermore, Bahrain has the potential to record sustained growth over the next ten years and beyond, with a forecasted compound annual growth rate of 6.6pc from 2020 to 2030.

Pria Masson Tanwar explores and explains the world of aggregator platforms and their lucrative returns.

While looking for insurance policies, I reached the pages of some very interesting platforms that listed out a variety of policies. These platforms allowed me to compare options and gave me an excellent costumed response while the chat function allowed me to ask simple questions. The whole experience was far more peaceful than scouring the internet and spending time on the phone speaking to specific companies. This is the world of an aggregator platform and I started thinking about the various forms of aggregators that seem to surround us. In Bahrain, Talabat is something everyone is familiar with. The idea is so simple, a platform for restaurants to list themselves on and sell their products through. Talabat is a marketplace platform rather than an aggregator. The largest marketplace platform is Amazon. The principles are the same. The platform is the front face for delivery, an online infrastructure, a client interface and a delivery mechanism. When you have an issue, you speak to the marketplace and rarely the original provider. All services are provided under the providers’ own brands that are listed on the marketplace platform. But the idea of aggregation is even more widespread. Take Uber for instance, it’s a 46 December 2021

platform where service providers who don’t have access to technology list their services. This is a classic aggregator service. Take that idea further ahead and we now have fitness aggregators like Fittr where you can choose from a bevy of coaches and fitness experts that will provide you with a nutrition plan and even an exercise schedule. In September 2021, Fittr raised USD11.5 million as its first round of funding. Even more interesting to me was aggregation of mental health and counselling services. You log in to platforms and choose your mental care provider and receive therapy. You can see who the therapist is, read reviews, rate and change therapists if needed. In January 2021, New York-based Talkspace, which provides therapy via a subscription-based online platform, announced its plans to merge with a Special Purchase Acquisition Company (SPAC) in a deal valuing the behavioral health startup at USD1.4 billion. Whatever the aggregator, almost all of them are using varied forms of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning. This helps to provide a very customised and seamless experience for the end customers. This is where it gets interesting. The

investment in technology infrastructure and more importantly a machine learning and AI driven platform, is expensive. However, the benefits and savings in other areas can be quite high. Used effectively, machines can understand patterns in customer behavior and increase customer engagement to a very high extent. Almost every entity and service is now being aggregated into some platform or marketplace system – be it banking, insurance, medical services, retail products, fitness, nutrition, domestic help and even matrimonial applications. To me however, the whole idea, while making business sense, is not necessarily good for the entrepreneurs in these spaces that are providing the services. The only way for a platform to make money is commission, and new businesses run on thin margins. Yet, unless aligned with an aggregator, the presence of a new business could remain unknown. “You have to spend money to make money” – this is another cost added to the business plan of most new entrepreneurs today. As a business concept, however it ticks the boxes as being a very sophisticated classified system with a very targeted reach, thereby increasing the chances of a sale. www.bahrainthismonth.com

GAMES

VERDICT:

A fun but formulaic experience.

RATING:

WHAT IS IT?

Call of Duty: Vanguard is a first-person shooter game developed by Sledgehammer Games and published by Activision. It serves as the 18th instalment in the overall Call of Duty series. It establishes a storyline featuring the birth of the Special Forces to face an emerging threat at the end of the war during various theatres of World War II.

GAMEPLAY

Vanguard’s campaign gameplay mechanics such as the player being able to mount wielded weapons to flat surfaces, interact with doors and execute takedowns. You also have the ability to use a more advanced tactical approach in combat such as blind-firing from behind cover, breaking through destructible environmental elements or creating new paths to complete objectives by climbing walls. There is also the standard round-based Nazi Zombie experience and the series’ staple multiplayer modes included.

GRAPHICS

Vanguard is visually striking throughout, whether that be the hostile greens of the Solomon Islands or shell flashes illuminating enemy silhouettes in the mist of night-time Normandy. Facial animations are also noticeably impressive – not many games stack up against Call of Duty when it comes to the graphical quality of its cutscenes. All these factors combine to create a wholly cinematic experience.

FORZA HORIZON 5

Forza Horizon 5 is a racing game set in an open world environment based in a fictional representation of Mexico. The game has the largest map in the entire Forza Horizon series, being 50pc larger than Forza Horizon 4 while also having the highest point in the Horizon series. It contains an active caldera volcano, jungles and beaches, ancient Mayan temples, and towns and cities such as Guanajuato. Players can explore the open world freely, though they can also compete in multiplayer races and complete the campaign mode 50 December 2021

Diana Ross

Thank You| Diana Ross’ first album of originals in over 20 years is neither the unqualified triumph nor the disgrace it could have been. Thank You is constructed as a major return. Although Ross co-wrote eight of the songs and did some of the recording at her home studio, it involves multiple teams of writers and producers, pieced together from other sessions in Los Angeles, New York, Miami, and London, and features the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and London Symphony Orchestra separately on over half the cuts. She puts her all into these positive messages of gratitude, support, and unity, no matter how much the lyrics resemble mixed-and-matched phrases from inspirational memes.

Ed Sheeran – =

Abba Voyage Verdict:

A joyous return for the pop legends.

What’s the story? ABBA kind of stumbled their way into Voyage, their first album in 40 years. In 2016, the group began working on ABBAtars, a virtual concert based on the band’s blockbuster 1979 tour and featuring 3D renditions of Benny Andersson, Björn Ulvaeus, Agnetha Fältskog and Anni-Frid Lyngstad. Andersson and Ulvaeus decided they should write a couple of new songs for ABBAtars, thinking that if it was going to replicate the experience of an ABBA tour, the group would surely be peddling new material. The result was ten songs that comprise Voyage.

Worth a listen? Andersson and Ulvaeus wisely decided to not follow any stylistic trend or adopt any modern production technique; voices aren’t auto-tuned and rhythms aren’t sequenced. Voyage is recognisably ABBA music, with Andersson and Ulvaeus reviving the big, dramatic melodies that defined a good portion of their catalogue – the way the opening ballad “I Still Have Faith in You” soars can cause goosebumps of recognition – and they do convincing nods at their lighter, danceable moments on the singles “Don’t Shut Me Down” and “Just a Notion,” yet they also offer reminders of their Eurovision origins with the overheated showstopper “I Can Be That Woman” and vaguely ominous, vaguely disco “Keep an Eye on Dan.” Moments like these are quite remarkable, as it feels like ABBA have continued without missing a step, while the retro vibes are still apparent.

www.bahrainthismonth.com

“I have grown up, I am a father now.” These are the first words Ed Sheeran sings on =, his fourth official solo album, the one that arrives four years after ÷. Between these two records, he got married to his sweetheart and had a baby – major life events that provide the fuel for the 14 songs on =. Supported by a bed of supple R&B rhythms, retro keyboards and a vague hint of his signature acoustic guitar, Sheeran tackles new fatherhood and love everlasting, taking time to offer such complementary tunes as “Visiting Hours,” a nod to a departed friend.

Mastodon

Hushed and Grim Hushed and Grim embodies their history of Mastodon’s musical experimentation in 15 songs that crisscross prog, stoner, doom and psych metal through earworm melodies amid sometimes exotic modal, dynamic and textural excursions. Opener “Pain with an Anchor” charts a progressive trek through the moment of death itself as Brann Dailor’s lyrics reveal. “The Crux” intros with an Eastern mode before careening into buzzing prog metal with crunching guitars. After the shattering brute force of the triple-timed “Savage Lands,” closer “Gigantium” is the culmination of everything that precedes it. Epic and varied, it is alternately anthemic, meandering and melodic. While Hushed and Grim tracks the stages of grief, it also reflects on the soul’s journey after death. Musically, Mastodon illuminate the emotional heft of their subject matter in gorgeously architected compositions. December 2021 53

Emporio Armani

You can style a tailored suit over lace tops in a number of eyecatching pieces like Emporio Armani’s horizontally striped suit. Genny’s black, patterned pant suit is perfect when paired with classic escarpins and long earrings, while Giorgio Armani takes the term ‘smart casual’ to another level with this statement making grey and silver suit. Dresses can never go out of style, but there’s no need to play it safe! We love Genny’s red sequined cocktail dress that glitters and glows. The Emporio Armani black cocktail dress on the other hand is a classic with its velvet skirt and its boddice lavishly drapped with exquisite beading.

e fashionable this festive season with a stunning outfit embellished with the right accessories. Versace’s beautiful gold cocktail dresses from their FW 21 collection are ideal for an evening event, and stand out with the right pumps or stilettos. Dressing for the season is necessary, so we would layer Dolce and Gabbana’s tailored red coat or the emerald green buttoned jacket from Genny over the dress when needed. To accessorise, there’s plenty to choose from this season but a couple of collections stood out to us. Roberto Coin’s latest collection, Princess Flower, is a surreal scene full of elements reminiscent of Art Deco architecture. Princess Flower belongs to the creative bouquet of Roberto Coin’s Princess family of collections. The

flower made of small diamonds that decorates other Princess jewels has been re-elaborated in this collection to become the focal point of each piece. On the other hand, Messika’s elegant Malachite Colour Play collection is sure to turn some heads. Malachite, mother-ofpearl and turquoise are stars of the show on sumptuous plastrons, XXL earrings and a three-finger ring. This combined with an unprecedented combination of coloured gold and precious materials make the pieces incomparably attentiongrabbing. Whatever you choose, we’re sure you’ll steal the show this festive season.

23-year-old architecture graduate, Hanin Almughawi looked forward to a blissful married life when she wedded her college sweetheart. As the inevitable teething problems of settling into a new home and family consumed her attention, she ignored the recurrent headaches that got worse by the day. “There was interference by my in-laws in issues between my husband and I, which did not help our new marriage,” remembers Hanin, now 31. “Along with the headaches, I started getting frequent nose bleeds, but I didn’t do anything about it. I was too stressed with the situation with my husband and his family, and did not feel right to talk to anyone about it.” When she complained about her health problems, she was told it was all just ‘in her head’. The alarm bells went off when she started losing her vision, and she finally sought medical help. “I was diagnosed with intercranial hypertension, and the MRI of my brain looked so bad, that doctors in Bahrain had little hope for me,” says Hanin. Her parents accompanied her to London for a cure, but there too, doctors admitted to her case being in its advanced stage. “My mother spoke to some top doctors, and finally we flew to Singapore for my surgery.” Hanin underwent two surgeries to tackle the cerebrospinal fluid that was building excessive pressure in her skull, causing her symptoms. “In the first surgery, they drilled holes in my head to let out a fountain of fluid. After a few days in the ICU, the next operation allowed the excess fluid produced to be drained through a tubing passing down my spine, stomach and through an implanted valve into the bladder. I still have all those scars,” says Hanin. Although her husband accompanied her for her surgery, their relationship was far from perfect. “My mother did feel something wasn’t right between us, but I still did not open up to her,” Hanin admits. From Singapore, she returned to her marital home to recover, but unfortunately did not receive the care and emotional support that was required to recuperate from such a grave health condition. “I was treated very badly,” she says, recounting the indifferent attitude of her husband’s family. “Due to extreme muscle weakness, I could hardly eat anything and

found it difficult to breathe. I was a 27-yearold who weighed just 29kgs. I could no longer walk and used a wheelchair to move around.” The added mental trauma did not help her recovery. The fluctuating levels of fluid in her brain caused epileptic seizures. “When this would happen, I would bite my lips and tongue so hard that they would bleed, but my husband was told that I was only acting to get attention,” Hanin relates. “I was waiting to feel better after the surgery, but instead, felt worse. I had around only 20 percent of my vision, and I also lost my sense of touch.” When Hanin thought things in her life couldn’t get any worse, she was hit with a bigger emotionally painful blow. “Three months after my surgeries, doctors in Bahrain did not expect me to get better. My husband told me that he could no longer accept me in a wheelchair, as it embarrassed him, and gave me a divorce.” Back at her parent’s place, Hanin tried her best to heal. Slowly and steadily, her condition seemed to improve. “Physically I was getting better, but I was emotionally broken, and I could not bring myself to go out or talk to anyone,” she recalls. What kept her going was her faith. “I had full faith in God and my prayers, and I felt deep www.womanthismonth.com

inside that He had something great for me in the future,” she says. “That and my mother’s unconditional love and support helped me to get better.” Taking each day as it came, Hanin slowly gained energy and strength, as well as her full range of vision and tried to walk independently despite many failed attempts. “Nine months after my surgery, I visited my surgeon in Singapore. He was shocked to see completely normal MRI scans. I no longer needed the valve put inside my body, and had it surgically removed.” Hanin attributes her dramatic turnaround to plain old hope. “Where there is life, even if it’s the faintest heartbeat, there is hope. I truly believed that after going through so much difficulty, God has a great future ahead for me,” she strongly says. Too much time had passed between graduating and the point where she stood in life to pursue a career in architecture. But Hanin resolved that she wasn’t going to let circumstances hold her back. Around the time the pandemic hit the world, she went public with her Instagram handle, @hanin.blogger. “I had to do something for Hanin. Being a very private person, initially I did not show my face in my posts. But when I did, I gained confidence and lots of followers as well,”

she says of the phase when she put herself out there. Today, Hanin is a well-known blogger and social media influencer with over 34,000 followers who trust her word on all things fashion, lifestyle and travel. She practises what she preaches, taking no aspect of her body or health for granted, giving her fans a daily dose of positivity. “I feel proud of the person I’ve become today - from my personality to the way I talk and present myself. I’m a proud brain surgery survivor,” she smiles. “I’d like to remind young women that they are beautiful and strong, and that they have the power to achieve anything, no matter what.” Aptly summing up her future dreams and plans as she did in one of her Instagram stories, she says, “I trust the next chapter because I know the author.” December 2021

MADE TO LAST Visionary Bahraini fashion designer, Hala Kaiksow, has created a brand that most conscious consumers can find solace in – a brand that defies the practice of mass production, is rooted in tradition and promotes sustainability. She tells Farah Baig about the brand’s history and more.

C

hanging consumer habits, widespread digitisation and the mammoth growth of e-commerce platforms have increased the consumption and procurement of products ten-fold, nurturing a trend that is far from sustainable. Needless to say, these changes have been felt in the fashion industry too with the rapid growth of fast fashion brands. Eco-consciousness is, undoubtedly, the need of the hour as the world gets together to address the adverse effects of climate change; so, it’s refreshing when a forward-thinking designer like Hala Kaiksow, the young Bahraini woman

62

December 2021

behind the brand of the same name, decides to weave her own path in the industry. “I think a sustainable and minimal-waste approach is the necessary in the fashion industry. It is one of the most polluting industries, and there needs to be a shift. Mindful consumption and creation should be the only way moving forward but it takes a lot of re-education on both sides: the companies and consumers,” says Ms. Kaiksow. The creative designer has a hands on, traditional approach when creating the pieces in each of her collections. “My company started as an extension of my masters project

in which I was exploring alternative ways of making clothing in our mass-produced world today. I was yearning to reintegrate the touch of a hand and human feel back into garments,” says Ms. Kaiksow. “Tradition is important to me when it comes to my creative process. I value the way things were once made to last a lifetime, and so it became a goal of ours to do that as well,” she adds. Hala Kaiksow is a brand that stands out in the region with its earthy natural dyes, handwoven fabrics and hand-sewn garments. www.womanthismonth.com

PEOPLE | interview “At our studio we aim to celebrate all that is handmade and natural in any way we can. This is through the fibers we use, dyes we integrate, and ways in which we make our designs. We aim to give garments a soul that they seem to have lost over time,” she says with poise. “We often work with natural fabrics, and create our own textiles with weavers around the world. Including our talented weavers here in Bahrain. I draw inspiration from a myriad of sources, but if I had to pick one maybe the past – history,” she adds. In an interesting turn of events, Hala Kaiksow’s latest collection, AlHajr, was created during the pandemic. “Amidst our studio quarantine we had to each create our parts individually and have our tailor put everything together. With this collection I really wanted to push the bounds of garment making so the entire collection is created by hand. No machines were used, which means it took hundreds of hours of work to put together but I think it came together nicely,” she explains. The brand is notably an exhibitor at the

www.womanthismonth.com

Bahrain Pavilion at the Expo 2020 Dubai which is drawing worldwide attention. “We got the opportunity to collaborate with the Bahrain Pavilion to create the garments that were worn by the exhibitors of the space meaning the volunteers, as well as the cafe staff. As a Bahraini designer, being able to share my craft at an event of this magnitude has been an amazing opportunity that is incredibly humbling,” she says modestly. “We wanted to create a collection that spoke to the space and fit into it, as everyone entering the pavilion would see them instantly,” she explains. The structure of the Bahrain pavilion consists of 126 metal columns which support each other and the roof – a poetic nod to the concept of connectivity. “Hence, we also created our textiles accordingly to reflect the architecture of the pavilion, even managing to weave metal into them,” says the designer who doesn’t shy away from innovation. “We are busy working on a few projects now and are excited to reveal them next year!” concludes Ms. Kaiksow.

DOES MY CHILD HAVE A LEARNING ISSUE? Ouiam El Hassani tells you what steps to take to find out if your child has a learning issue.

If you're wondering whether learning and attention issues may be the reason why your child is struggling in school or at home, you're not alone. One in five kids have dyslexia, ADHD, or other learning and attention issues, and with the proper support, they can thrive both inside and outside the classroom. The dilemma is when you are trying to figure out whether there is an issue or not, because there is a thin line between kids taking time to go through certain milestones and kids having difficulties in certain areas.

Here are some steps to guide you: KNOW WHAT LEARNING AND ATTENTION ISSUES ARE AND AREN'T. Learning and attention issues are not a sign of laziness, bad parenting, or lack of intelligence. In fact, kids with such issues are often just as smart as their peers. Although all kids develop skills at different rates, kids with learning and attention issues have PERSISTENT difficulty in certain areas due to different "wiring" in the brain. You may see struggles with reading, writing, math, organisation, focus, listening, comprehension, social skills, motor skills, or some combination of these skills.

LEARN ABOUT TYPICAL DEVELOPMENTAL MILESTONES. It can be hard to know whether you're seeing signs of learning and attention issues in your child if you're unsure what skills are typical for the age. There are specific physical, cognitive, and social-emotional milestones to look for at each age. For example, a preschooler should be able to rhyme words, while a first grader should be able to start sounding out words and understand the relationship between letters and sounds. Knowing what to look for can help you determine if your child isn't meeting milestones as expected.

LIFESTYLE | opinion PLAN THE NEXT STEPS BASED ON YOUR CHILD'S SPECIFIC CHALLENGES. By now, you may have a better idea of what's causing your child's troubles, but you likely still have more than a few questions about what comes next. Seek out more information if you're concerned, and don't be afraid to ask for help. Creating a plan, even if it only includes a few goals, will help you feel more focused, more empowered, and less stressed.

KEEP TRACK OF ANY CONCERNS YOU HAVE. Observe your child and take notes about things that concern you. This will help you notice patterns, which will lead to finding solutions. For instance, if you notice that your child tends to get frustrated with reading, you can look for patterns in what is challenging and when. That can lead to finding the best tools and support to help with those particular issues. CONSIDER CONSULTING WITH A SPECIALIST. Specialists who work with kids with learning and attention issues include clinical child psychologists, pediatric neurologists, physical therapists, educational therapists, occupational therapists, developmental-behavioral pediatricians, and others. They can help address your concerns, identify the specific issues, and work with you to create a plan for your child and your family.

FIND OUT WHAT'S HAPPENING AT SCHOOL. Speak to your child's teacher to see how things are going. Ask questions like: Are they having trouble recognising letters? Does it seem as though reading, writing, or math are especially challenging? Don't forget to ask your child how school is going, too. Try using factual questions to start a conversation: "I know you have more teachers this year than you did last year. How's that going?" TALK TO YOUR CHILD'S DOCTOR. Schedule an appointment with your pediatrician to discuss your concerns, perhaps when your child is not there. Bring your notes to the appointment and be open to sharing any teacher concerns as well. If the doctor uses unfamiliar terms such as "assessment" and "evaluation" when talking about learning and attention issues, ask for clarification, so you understand everything.

REMEMBER YOU ARE NOT ALONE. Connect with other parents to hear their personal stories. This can help you better understand how other families are helping their children—and help you feel less alone. Consider connecting with other parents for support and advice through social media channels or elsewhere.

last word

Lauren Hutton famously said that fashion is what you’re offered four times a year by designers, but style is what you choose. Journalist and Fashion Editor, Maya Bannout, has a personality that is as refreshing and inspiring as her sense of style. We take a peek into the wonderful creative’s life this month. Name 3 things that you never leave the house without. My optical cat eye glasses, they are timeless and suit my face. Geometric frames are trendy now, so I will try them soon! Tinted lip balm, it gives an elegant glossy appearance during the day. My warm floral fragrance.

Are you much of a traveller? What’s your dream destination?

What are your top 5 fashion essentials? • A simple white shirt with

Travelling turns you into a storyteller, especially when you meet great designers and passionate perfumers. My dream destination will remain my home country - Lebanon. I would like to go there every morning just to hug my mother and smell each Jasmine in her garden.

If I want to add one more piece, it will be my blue skinny jeans (A must-have Momiform).

Any phobias?

I just have normal fears. Treatable!

I don’t have time to take good care of an animal at this time, but I would like to have a miniature poodle for my daughter and son in the future.

What’s the best advice you’ve ever received?

“There is nothing wrong with a little adventure so don’t be afraid to try new things”. I would like to cook with a professional pastry chef in Paris! I also love Diana Vreeland’s fashion sayings. It’s very true that: “The only real elegance is in the mind. If you’ve got that, the rest really comes from it”. www.womanthismonth.com

What are you grateful for today? I think I’m very lucky to be a mother and for being given my jewel, Amaya, and my little tiger, Amer.

I’m not vegan when it comes to Japanese food.
