Printing Press Union Press, Bahrain Published monthly by

December has always been an exciting month in Bahrain with Christmas, National Day and New Year’s Eve being celebrated in grand fashion. It truly is the most wonderful time of the year, and we’re here to tell you how to make the most of it! We’ve curated a list of some of the very best family, cultural and nightlife events on offer; not forgetting, of course, the New Year’s Eve countdown to the beginning of 2023. As more events are sure to be announced after our press deadline, be sure to check out www. bahrainthismonth.com for the full. This year, the Kingdom celebrates its 51st National Day. Ahmed Alsayed shares his thoughts on some of Bahrain’s most notable achievements under the guidance of HRH the Crown Prince and Prime Minister, Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa. We’ve also put together a fun guide of things you can do to discover our beautiful Kingdom. You’ll find plenty more to read in our interview section this month. The United States Navy’s Fifth Fleet has been headquartered in Bahrain for several decades. We spoke to the fleet’s commander VADM Brad Cooper, who is also at the helm of two large coalitions that are responsible for maritime security in the region. As we have always enjoyed a close connection with communities in the Kingdom, we had a chat with the Thai Ambassador, HE Piyapak Sricharoen, about Thailand’s diplomatic relationship with Bahrain. In the spirit of National Day, we also met with the talented musician, Nasser Busaad, who is known for creating mesmerising covers of popular songs and TV soundtracks on the oud. We also spoke to Hublot’s Regional Director for Latin America & Caribbean, Middle East and Africa, David Tedeschi, at the glamourous Jewellery Arabia 2022. Our motoring section is sure to be a treat for petrol heads this month! Our motoring correspondent, Kristian Harrison, attended one of the biggest motorsport events on the Kingdom’s sporting calendar, the FIA WEC 8 Hours of Bahrain where he was a guest of the United Autosports team. He also took the McLaren Artura, the company’s first production hybrid, out for a spin on Bahrain’s roads. Dream job, anybody? The holiday season isn’t quite the same without some fun, frolic and a feast at the dinner table with our loved ones. We’ve put together a list of some of the best of dining which you can enjoy at the finest hotels. We also reviewed some delicious food at one of Adliya’s most eclectic restaurant’s El Chapo. In our Woman This Month section you’ll find plenty of inspiration as we speak to two prolific women with very different creative visions. Shoug Alainati, or The Flip Diva, is Bahrain’s first female carpenter and has plenty to say about how she’s created a new mould for women. Roshini Daswani, on the other hand, is a renowned social media influencer who was inspired to create the luxury baby lifestyle brand, Milk It Baby, after the birth of her daughter. On the occasion of Bahraini Women’s Day, Eman Deabil; shared her thoughts, and facts and figures related to their achievements.

LED BY A VISIONARY

The Kingdom of Bahrain celebrates its 51st National Day this year and has bright future in store for Team Bahrain. Ahmed Alsayed shares his thoughts on some of the kingdom’s achievements through the guidance of His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Crown Prince and Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Bahrain.

B

ahrain is now set on a path towards further social and economic development, and prosperity, as the Kingdom celebrates its 51st National Day on December 16, 2022. This follows the historic success of the recent national elections with an unprecedented turnout for both the Council of Representatives and municipal elections, as well as, the appointment of the new Shura Council, accompanied by the formation of a dynamic and progressive government led by the visionary leadership of His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Crown Prince and Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Bahrain. What boosts this positive outlook is the encouraging news that most economic sectors experienced positive growth, owing to the post-COVID-19 economic recovery. Bahrain›s real GDP increased by 6.9 percent year on year in the second quarter of 2022, as almost all non-oil sectors grew. Add to that, Bahrain recently announced the discovery of two new natural gas reservoirs, in addition to the drilling for the first production wells in Bahrain’s offshore shale oil discovery expected to start soon. This couldn’t have come at a

Such successes further enhance Bahrain’s image globally as it retains its title as the regional financial and business hub. These achievements did not occur by chance, but rather is a cultivation of years of hard work and dedication of the strong Team Bahrain led by HRH Prince Salman who is diligent in promoting Bahrain as a destination for business and investment, and creating the economic infrastructure and climate that supports that vision. HRH Prince Salman has been incubating new businesses and Bahraini talent to help build the kingdom on its journey to sustainable development and prosperity. Benjamin Franklin once said: “An investment in knowledge pays the best interest”. HRH Prince Salman championed education in Bahrain from a young age, and personally supported Bahraini students to reach the highest echelons of academia. than in HRH the Crown Prince’s International Scholarship Programme (CPISP), established in 1999. The programme promotes outstanding educated young Bahrainis and provides them with a generous support mechanism to achieve their aspirations. HRH Prince Salman recognises that Bahrain’s most valuable asset is its people, and has spared no expense to maximise their potential. Over two decades on, The CPISP has provided (and continues to provide) Bahrain with world-class managers, lawyers, engineers, entrepreneurs, bankers, and more. In fact, many of its graduates today are in positions of national responsibility such as a minister, government officials, and industry leaders, proving that His Royal Highness knew all along that his faith and confidence in his people and vision for highly educated Bahrainis will undoubtedly come to fruition. That is precisely why Team Bahrain led by HRH Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Crown Prince and Prime Minister, will lead Bahrain to a bright and prosperous future.

Have a great Bahraini Breakfast

Warm up with some Chai Karak!

If you’re new to the Kingdom, you might be wondering what Chai Karak is. It literally translates to strong tea and can be enjoyed dine-in at cafes or at tea shops which will bring cups of it to your car. This fragrant milk tea is an essential during Bahraini winter and enjoyed by all.

Explore the Bahrain Fort

Did you know that the Bahrain Fort is also a UNESCO Heritage site. This beautiful fort is located on the coast in Karbabad (Seef area) and offers beautiful views of the city, sea and surrounding farm areas too. If you’re lucky you may even catch the ‘Bahrain Cowboys’ on a leisurely ride in the surrounding area. It truly is a vibe.

Few words can describe how comforting it is to tuck into a great Bahraini breakfast platter. Get an early start to make sure you get a table at one of the fantastic local restaurants spread across the island. Some of our favourites are the traditional Haji Café located at the Manama Souq, Freej bin Rashdan in Muharraq, Foods at Home in Budaiya and Naseef on the stunning Al Sa’ada Waterfront.

Located in Janabiyah, the Camel Farm has been a favourite among tourists and residents alike for several years. The farm, which is open from sunrise to sunset, is home to hundred of camels. That being said, remember to ask the caretakers for their feed as opposed to bringing your own as they do have specific feed. Entry to the farm is free for all.

For dinner, be sure to visit one of the many local grill shops around the island and enjoy a delicious plate of lumee tikka, kebab or reyash (lamb chops). This with a side of hummus or mutabal and hot khubbis is just perfection. What most people don’t realise is that these grills are not only supremely delicious, but incredibly cheap too! You’ll likely have a feast for just a couple of dinars!

Marvel at the Lights

Every National Day the city comes alive with stunning lights in and around the capital. There are two ways you can enjoy the experience and both are fun in their own way. You can either deck your car out in Bahraini flags and drive down the highway in Manama or head to Riffa for a drive past the iconic clock roundabout. Just remember you will be in a spot of traffic for this one. Alternatively, you can enjoy the lights along the corniche and by the Avenues. Just arrive early, park your car and enjoy a leisurely stroll with your loved ones. Oh, and don’t forget to take some pictures for the ‘gram!

Watch the fireworks

There are some things that you absolutely cannot miss for a National Day celebration, and fireworks across the island surely top the list. These can now be watched from different locations across the island, which are usually announced closer to the date. What we can confirm for now is that you can watch the fireworks at the Bahrain International Circuit on December 16 at 7pm. Be sure to watch our social media for updates. We cannot stress this enough though: set off early to ensure a parking spot and avoid traffic.

Tuck into some Delicious Grills

Here’s a fantastic early afternoon activity. Enjoy some of the best views of the Manama skyline from a very different perspective at Bahrain Bay. Stroll along the bay and get a kayak or go stand-up paddleboarding (SUP) along the bay for a truly sensational and serene experience. If paddling isn’t quite your thing, you can also take a ferry boat ride all the way around the bay or even grab pizza and ride around the bay on a Dough boat. Whatever you choose to do here, we’re positive it’ll be a great experience.

HERE IN COMMAND The United States Navy’s Fifth Fleet has been headquartered in the Kingdom of Bahrain for several decades. The fleet’s commander, VADM Brad Cooper, is also at the helm of two large coalitions: the Combined Maritime Force (CMF) and International Maritime Security Construct (IMSC). In this conversation with Bahrain This Month, he gives us some insight into the fleet’s priorities, their role in intercepting drugs and weapons in the region, and gives us a peek into his life too. 40 December 2022

Can you give us an overview of Fifth Fleet’s mission? What have been your priorities as commander here? Just to give you a little context on why we’re focused on this region, it’s a big maritime region covering 8,000 kms. from the Suez Canal all the way around the Arabian Peninsula into the North Arabia Gulf. It’s a vast amount of water, and through these waters flow 20 percent of the world’s oil. I think we would all agree that this region, literally and figuratively fuels the world. So, ensuring maritime stability is important; and that’s our responsibility. We focus on maritime security through deterrence and maintaining the ability to respond should something happen. We believe the best way to meet that is by strengthening our partnerships and accelerating innovation, which are really at the heart and soul of everything that we’re doing here. We’re fortunate to have two very large coalitions here that I command: the Combined Maritime Force (CMF), a 34 member-nation maritime force which is the largest in the world, and the International Maritime Security Construct (IMSC) which is an 11-nation maritime force.

Can you tell us about ‘Digital Horizon’ which was recently launched here in Bahrain? Digital Horizon is what I would call the next step in a series of steps that we’ve taken to accelerate innovation. One of the important aspects of our efforts to bring unmanned and artificial intelligence together has been the speed at which we’ve been able to do it. We’ve been moving very quickly using a model that I characterise as ‘factory to fleet’ - the latest and greatest that the world has to offer; let’s bring it to the region and operate it and see how it works. It’s a tough region to operate in from a climate perspective and long distances. So, if it works here, it can probably work anywhere else. About six months ago, we worked with a number of organisations in the Department of Defense, and asked for the latest and greatest around the world in unmanned systems and artificial intelligence over time. That got necked down and today we’re working with 17 industry partners who have 15 platforms here, 10 of which are here for this event for the first time. As I look to the future, we’ll take lessons from this as well as operational lessons and apply them in a meaningful way. www.bahrainthismonth.com

interview What do you believe sets the U.S. Navy’s relationship with Bahrain apart from other relationships you have in the region?

weapons. Last year, we seized 9,000, weapons, which was three times more than the previous year while this year, through our cooperation with the United Kingdom, they seized motors and motors associated with cruise missiles and ballistic missiles that were heading down to Yemen. Then we saw in the last couple of weeks our interdiction of an explosive-laden dhow that was going to Yemen. These things reflect the seriousness of our focus.

I think it is a very unique arrangement here, which starts with a decades long strategic relationship between the United States and the Kingdom of Bahrain. it includes decades of working shoulder to shoulder and in very unique ways. Let me just talk about a couple of them; the first being the willingness of both His Majesty King Hamad and His Royal Highness the Crown Prince and Prime Minister to host these two very large coalitions, which set the conditions for all our operations and partnerships in the region.

What does living in Bahrain mean to you personally? And do you have family here with you? I’m here with my wife and have two adult children who live back in the United States. We love living here; it’s been an enriching experience every single day.

Then when I take it down to a day-to-day practical point of view, our relationships really are at their best on a people-to-people level here. Even before I moved out here, I’ve probably known hundreds of people who’ve lived in Bahrain – American Navy families. The one thing they all had in common is they love living here. American military families here don’t live on a base, we live out in town. I’d like to highlight that we look to make Bahrain the number one destination for sailors and their families to be stationed. Last year, this base won the number one base in the entire US Navy out of 68, around the world. This is reflective of the depth of the relationship with Bahrain – it’s deep and has a lot of different aspects to it, all of which are positive. Can you tell me more about the regional partnerships that have developed over the past year under your leadership? The region is vast and dynamic so everything has to be done with partners. This points to the importance of the partnerships that we have. As we look to the future, taking those partnerships and growing them in terms of numbers and capabilities is important. One key area of this is being able to grow our unmanned surface vessel fleet which we’re currently on a trajectory to grow a 100 unmanned surface vessel fleet. By the end of the summer of 2023, about 20 percent of this fleet would be from the United States, and 80 percent would be spread along all the partners in the region. The US navy recently introduced a pilot, twoyear mental healthcare programme. How necessary is this approach for the mental health of personnel deployed in Bahrain? www.bahrainthismonth.com

What’s a personal leisure activity that you enjoy? I liked playing basketball in high school. I didn’t play much basketball for about 20 years and started playing it again. I’ve found that it’s a good opportunity to get a little exercise in, get a little thinking time in and show that I still got it! It’s fun.

Mental health is a component of overall health. I’ve somewhat jokingly in the past, although there’s a serious component to this, said that the United States Navy requires you to get your teeth checked twice a year and that we ought to make an investment in your brain in a meaningful way. So, this is really just an opportunity to invest in our sailors and their families in a unique way. This particular pilot programme has been enabled by wonderful outreach and collaboration with facilities out in town and using the facilities that are available out in the community, as well as expanding the number of counselors and mental healthcare providers here on the base. The US Navy has had great success in intercepting drug smuggling vessels. How significant is the role of the navy in the fight against drugs? The counter smuggling effort is a key area of focus for us. By the end of this year, I think we will be close to having seized a billion dollars’ worth of illicit narcotics in the previous two years. I think these are meaningful, tangible expressions of the seriousness of our effort. And it’s been heavily partnered with the Combined Maritime Forces at the core of how we’re doing business. Then equally, I think we’ve had successes in countering illicit

You have a name which is world famous in Hollywood. Are there any particular stories that you’d like to share with us where that’s concerned? Having the name Brad Cooper, the same name as the ‘2012 Sexiest Man on the Planet’, is not an easy name to live up to. I had a job about 10 years ago where I worked very heavily in the private sector and had to give a lot of public speeches. I’m sorry to about the 10,000 women around the world that I disappointed when it was me showing up to speak and not the sexiest man on the planet. No one’s ever complained, but you know, they’ve just … I could see the disappointment. Finally, what are the long-term plans for the navy here in Bahrain? First, I think it’s important to point out the United States Navy is not going anywhere. We’re here, we’ve been here for decades, and I anticipate we’re going to be here for decades. And in that path, I think you’ll continue to see us doubling down on expanding and strengthening these core relationships that we have through the multiple coalitions. Representing Thailand

December is a highly significant month for Thai nationals. The tourist-friendly country will celebrate Thailand’s Independence Day, commemorate the birthday of the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej, and mark Thai Father’s Day too. Bahrain This Month’s Farrah Saville sat down with the Thai Ambassador, His Excellency Piyapak Sricharoen, to talk about the South East Asian country’s friendly relationship with Bahrain.

C

ould you tell our readers about your distinguished career and your journey to becoming the ambassador? You must be a civil servant in the Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs. I’ve had a career for 28 years, and have been posted in various countries including India, the neighbouring Malaysia in Kuala Lumpur, and now Bahrain. My experience has been mainly in bilateral diplomacy, dealing directly with the host country or a bilateral country, rather than in multilateral diplomatic settings. Coming to Bahrain, my assignment, having never been posted in this region, was to expand my horizons. How many Thai nationals are currently living in Bahrain? Which sectors are they employed in? We estimate we have about 4,000 Thai nationals living in the Kingdom. In Bahrain it varies because people come and go for a short time. Most of the people you see in Juffair are owners of small businesses, or working in Thai businesses such as restaurants, shopping and retail businesses, and holistic spas. Many of them come here to open small businesses in spaces such as Thai Mart. How has Thai Mart been received, and what are the plans related to it? I was quite excited about the opening of Thai Mart in Bahrain two years ago. It’s vital to assess the Thai presence in Bahrain, which is a work in progress and an ambitious agenda. At this moment, activities you see being held are sometimes held by the Royal Thai Embassy while others are organised by the Thai community. These have been well received, especially by those who have previously visited Thailand, and would like to relive some of those exotic moments whether that be through Thailand’s popular food or spa products. Down the road, I understand that Thai Mart will be a hub for all sorts of Thai products in Bahrain. It’s also quite advantageous to be located

interview

just next to Dragon City, which is quite popular among shoppers. What are the current trade figures between Bahrain and Thailand? What are some of the key products and services traded between the two countries? Despite being a year of recovery, last year’s figure (2021) was also an all-time high of an estimated USD 420 million. The products exported to Thailand include cars and other vehicles, spare parts, electronics, construction materials and furniture. What we import from Thailand are, of course, energy products, as well as some seafood products. We’re on track to post a growth of about 10 percent, which when compared to 2021 is good news. Is there a particular area that you see further potential in that you would like to improve on? Since my arrival here, I have been consulting various stakeholders. There’s more potential for our presence in food security products, which can be tested in any market. Another area in which we haven’t had more of a presence is construction and household materials. Thailand is a big country with a long tradition of property and housing; so, we have a robust construction sector making it an excellent opportunity for Thai construction. We are confident in the growth of the whole region, which has made a remarkable recovery following the outbreak and effects of COVID19. In the medium to long term, this will likely be a market that will continue to grow strongly. Hence, I would encourage Thai SMEs which are venturing out into the Middle East market to look at Bahrain as the best and most business-friendly. Are these some of the ways you plan on www.bahrainthismonth.com

improving bilateral relationships? I came here with an economic agenda. Any bilateral relationship or economic relationship underpins the overall financial relationship. Thailand and Bahrain already have a strong, long-standing, special friendship at all levels. This has made it much easier for people-topeople relationships and the development of business cooperation. What do you enjoy most about living in Bahrain? The welcoming nature of the country and an understanding of Thai culture makes me wake up every morning wanting to enhance the relationship even more. The people are very open, and optimistic with a positive outlook. How has Thailand’s tourism sector recovered since the COVID-19 pandemic? Thailand has been a popular holiday destination for Bahrainis and other regional tourists. COVID-19 restrictions have relaxed and the number of Bahrainis travelling to Thailand has increased. Before COVID-19 the number of tourists travelling from Bahrain to Thailand was around 13,000 every year. That’s about four percent of the population which is quite significant. The number of Thai nationals visiting Bahrain is about 10,000 following the pandemic. Overall, the Thai tourism industry is still recovering this year. December is a significant month for Thailand, which includes Thai Independence Day. How does the Embassy intend to mark this occasion? In December, three occasions for the Thai nation are of significance: the birthday of His Majesty the late King Bhumibol, Thai National Day and Thai Father’s Day. Those are three

occasions in the span of one week and quite important ones in the Thai community. We have a Thai community function on December 5 and, of course, will also have a diplomatic reception on the December 4 which is organised every year at the embassy. So, what can each learn from the other’s culture? Understanding and appreciating each other’s culture is essential to our role as global citizens as it opens horizons for young people in our respective communities. We have some cultural traditions which we are very proud of. What comes to mind first is Thai food, which a lot of people may know about already as it is already quite popular; but you’d be amazed if you go back to Thailand. I would recommend trying out some of the Northern specialties; in Bangkok for example it’s much spicier. Another way we can enjoy each other’s cultures is through traditional music. Lastly, Muay Thai which is Thai boxing is very popular in the United States and Europe. These are some of things that could be introduced here. What have you found to be the biggest similarities between Thailand and Bahrain? It’s the friendliness of the people who are very open and have an optimistic outlook. I think we both believe that life is for enjoyment, for friends and family. Are there any high-level delegations planned for the upcoming month? We are due for a visit for foreign ministers which could take place next year. For updates from the Thai embassy, follow @thaiembassybahrain on Instagram or call 17 233-588. December 2022 45

When Tradition Meets Contemporary Nasser Busaad has captured our attention (and hearts) by using the traditional oud to play modern day pop songs and theme songs from popular TV shows. In fact, his mesmerising renditions have enabled him to amass a huge following on social media. As we celebrate Bahrain National Day this month, Farrah Saville chatted with Nasser about how he keeps this traditional instrument alive while remaining contemporary.

W

ith over 10,000 followers, Nasser Busaad has clearly grown to be a favourite in the Kingdom of Bahrain. When asked who he is, he graciously answers: “I’m simply a musician who enjoys sharing his music with the world.” Yet his renditions are far from simple for Nasser has managed to create unique covers for tunes as popular as Michael Bublé’s Sway, CKay’s Love Nwantiti and more. “My interest in the oud came from my dad. Ever since I was young, the instrument was basically available everywhere we would sit. It definitely played a vital role in my upbringing,” he reminisces. The oud is one of those few musical instruments, which have succeeded in retaining its originality even in the modern age without becoming obsolete. “I highly support the statement that music can help preserve culture and traditions and wish we had more attention towards it. Oud as an instrument carries culture and tradition that goes back in history for thousands of years; its unique shape and sound plays a solid role in our identity as Middle Easterners, which makes it a highly favourable instrument for us,” he says.

www.bahrainthismonth.com

While Nasser believes that the oud pairs with a lot of instruments, he sometimes enjoys playing it with percussion. “Other instruments do not have the same presence as the oud does when it comes to that. Another unique thing about the oud is that it’s a fretless instrument which gives you the ability to express freely with no constraints,” he says. Pop culture has definitely had an influence on Nasser’s music, as the majority of his covers are considered to be a fusion of different genres. “Anything with an interesting tune inspires me to come up with something, whether it is improvising or just playing along,” he says. “The results of many of the covers that I have made have been pleasing to me. I would have to say, thought, that one cover which stood out was Hotel California’s solo, I remember just listening to it for the first time and my flow was on point with it. It took me less than a day to record it and the way the tune came up was so natural to me,” he adds. Nasser recently took part in the programme led by His Highness Shaikh Khalid bin Hamad

Al Khalifa, HHSK Initiatives, which focuses on youth and community development. “It was a great experience, something definitely out of my comfort zone but I always try to push myself out of it whenever I get too comfortable. It was a nice peek into how the media world works and how things are done when creating something of that level. It was exhausting and required a high level of commitment, but the results and experiences were worth it,” he says. While Nasser is a phenomenal musician, he does in fact work full time but still manages to find time to craft his passion. “It’s hard for sure, but my love for the instrument keeps me bound to it. I always have an oud available next to me at home and I would just play whenever I feel like it. I don’t set a specific time to practice, I try to fit it in whenever I can because I have other hobbies and priorities that I focus on as well.” If you would like to listen to some of Nasser’s music, you can follow him on Instagram using the handle @nasserbusaad.

The First, Unique and

Different

The Swiss watchmaking brand Hublot has been synonymous with innovation since the year 1980. During the dazzling Jewellery Arabia 2022 exhibition, Farah Baig sat down for a chat with Hublot’s Regional Director of Latin America and the Caribbean, Middle East and Africa, David Tedeschi. He shared his insights on why the brand’s collections are coveted around the world, its presence in the Middle East and the company’s brand ambassadors.

H

ublot needs no introduction to discerning watch-wearers around the world. This has been the result of the brand’s ground-breaking craftmanship, attention to detail and its watches’ carefully-engineered movements. Hublot’s Regional Director of Latin America and the Caribbean, Middle East and Africa, David Tedeschi, has been involved with the brand for the last 15 years. “As a child, I was actually quite passionate about watchmaking and then studied in Switzerland to become an engineer in the trade. I was always attracted by Hublot and interested in the brand, and then in 2008 I had the opportunity to be a part of the company while I was still studying and never left,” says Mr. Tedeschi. This is Hublot The watchmaker has been known to be ahead

of its time and has consistently reinvented the industry. “At Hublot what we like to do is be first, unique and different in every way and I would say our philosophy is ‘the art of fusion’. Why ‘the art of fusion’? This is because we’re leaders in creating watches with new material,” he says, highlighting two watches that were on display. “These two pieces can exactly represent what I just said. On the left, you have the first bright ceramic watch that was ever produced, while on the right it’s a mix of a ceramic case with the bezel crafted with a material called Magic Gold. Both these materials are patented and completely exclusive to Hublot,” he explains. Magic Gold is the only 18K gold which can withstand scratches, even when the wearer has an extremely active lifestyle, making it a true revolution in the world of precious materials.

“The material is something that we’re quite proud of as there have been no innovations as such with gold alloy since the time of Ancient Egypt,” he says. One of the main factors that have made the brand stand out in the region and around the world is its exclusivity. “While all of Hublot’s watches may be exclusive, our limited-edition collections are even harder to get your hands on. One of our latest limited-edition collections was created in collaboration with Takashi Murakami – the world-famous Japanese contemporary artist. There were only 100 pieces in the world and people were willing to pay 10 or 15 times the price just to get it,” he says. Takashi Murakami is known for his visually modern style which tends to merge Japanese tradition and pop culture. One of the most eyewww.bahrainthismonth.com

catching watches created as part of the collection was the colourful Takashi Murakami Sapphire Rainbow. On the Middle East “Hublot has had a very longstanding partnership with Bahrain Jewellery Centre. In fact, it is our oldest partnership in the region as they have believed in Hublot since 1980 and we have been with them here in Bahrain since,” says Mr. Tedeschi. “They are friends of the brand and I am positive this partnership will continue to grow and develop over the years.” Of the brand’s collection, the Classic Fusion is the most popular in Bahrain. “On top of that, I would say that Bahrain is one of the GCC countries that sells the most to women which is really incredible to us. Every watch brand tries to attract the interest of women as watches tend to be a little bit of a man’s world,” he explains. The region as a whole is one of Hublot’s biggest markets, and is also quite different from any region which the company has a presence in across the world. “This is due to the fact that the type of watches we sell in the Middle East are not exactly the same as what we sell in Europe, with quite a difference between collections,” he says. “For instance, there is a preference here for more classic watches as opposed to sporty watches. Hence, we are leading in terms of sales with our Classic Fusion collection,” he adds. The Feminine Appeal The Middle East is also the biggest in terms of www.bahrainthismonth.com

percentage of women buying Hublot watches, representing approximately 40 percent of sales in the region whilst around the world it represents just 25 percent. “It really means that women appreciate the brand a lot in the region which is a significant goal attained as women are more interested in jewellery,” he says. Mr. Tedeschi believes that this interest may be due to the brand’s strategy in the region which includes dedicated campaigns for women on a local and international level. “We are signing on more friends of the brands and more female ambassadors while, of course, extending our product range in the women’s segment. More women are interested in the Classic collection, but also the Big Bang collection which is important to us because women also influence what men purchase,” he says. The female brand ambassadors chosen by the brand are known for their innovation and stellar achievements. “For instance, one of the latest female brand brand ambassadors is Anne-Sophie Pic who is the only female threestar Michelin chef in the world who has eight Michelin stars across her restaurants,” he states. Being the First All eyes are on the pitch this season with football fever taking over the world. Hublot is a highly significant part of it, being the official timekeeper for the FIFA World Cup. “At the moment, it’s our biggest partnership and activation in football in general. Again, we always try to be first, unique and different in everything that we do. Back in 2006, we were not only the first watch brand, we were the

first luxury brand to enter the world of football,” he states. “At the time no one believed a luxury brand should sponsor football in a way because it’s a mass sport, but it’s also a sport that unites people and nations. Everyone watches football and it presents us with an opportunity to really develop our brand image and that’s what’s important for us,” he adds. One of the brand’s most notable ambassadors is none other than the French professional footballer Kylian Mbappé. “It really is an amazing story when it comes to Kylian. When we choose an ambassador, they are usually already a Hublot client; we don’t partner with people just to create a buzz and benefit from their reach. When we choose an ambassador, we really have to be able to transmit our philosophy and our values into that person and he has to share our common values. Kylian Mbappe is the best example of this,” says Mr. Tedeschi. “Most people assumed that we signed him because he won the World Cup in 2018, but we actually signed him at the start of the year and he was not a world champion at the time. Kylian is important to us not only as a footballer, but as a young man, a young businessman and athlete who talks to the younger generation,” he elaborates. By reaching out to the younger generation, Mr. Tedeschi believes that they may then become more aware of Hublot and possibly even become clients. “Younger people, even those under 18 years old will become our client in five, 10 or 15 years; it’s the right time to connect with them about Hublot’s presence. So really, it’s about connecting with the younger generation – future Hublot wearers,” he concludes. December 2022 49

Last month, we gave you some insight into the beginnings of modern healthcare in the Kingdom of Bahrain as we shared pictures from the founding of American Mission Hospital (AMH) through to 1942. In the second part of the AMH historical picture series, we explore another 40 years of the hospital’s illustrious 120-year history. From 1942 to 1982, AMH went through several stages of growth, but also faced some challenged. AMH was already serving the sick in Bahrain for over 40 years by the time government healthcare systems started to grow. By the 1940s and 1950s, government health centres and hospitals started to open in areas like Naeem and Salmaniya. The Awali Hospital of Bapco had started a bit earlier, in 1937, but required doctors and nurses who were often seconded to them by AMH for many years. From getting the first X-Ray machine in the Arabian Gulf Region, in 1940, to opening two new buildings, in 1962, AMH was always on the move. In the 1980s, it reoriented itself to face the challenges of free government health services which affected the number of AMH patients. However, it continued to adapt to new demands with a focus on service and patient care.

1940s. Fatima Al Zayani, the first Bahraini nurse, started her career at AMH. Fatima had married at a very young age and had a daughter who suddenly passed away after developing a severe fever. Inspiringly, Fatima took her daughter’s books, enrolled herself into the American Mission School (now known as Al Raja School) and educated herself. She, along with her sister Aisha, travelled to Baghdad where she completed nursing school in 1941, and became the first Bahraini woman to study abroad. She was also the first woman to get a driving license in Bahrain and the first woman entrepreneur when she opened a pharmacy. She went on to serve in Salmaniya Hospital as the Director of Outpatients until her retirement in 1971. www.bahrainthismonth.com

A FLAVOUR FIESTA!

dining

Located in the vibrant heart of Adliya’s Block 338, the Mexicanthemed El Chapo restaurant is home to some of the finest food, drinks and entertainment in the area. This month, Kristian Harrison checked it out and sampled some of their delicious fare.

S

ince opening in October 2021, El Chapo has established itself as one of the most popular spots in Bahrain. It’s not difficult to see why; its entranceway is emblazoned with colourful skulls commemorating the Mexican tradition of Día de Muertos – Day of the Dead – and its reception area truly encapsulates the feeling of fun. Want to frolic around before you head up to the lounge? Take a dive into the massive ball pit! Want to capture those special Instagram-worthy moments to look back on in the future? Check out the decorated booths or the LED angel wings! The only thing on my mind, however, was some good ol’ food and drink after a long, hectic week. Luckily, the friendly staff showed me up to the second floor and gave me a tour whilst the chefs got busy preparing the tasty treats. The eclectic décor definitely sets El Chapo apart from other outlets in the area. More painted skulls adorn the walls, which are also daubed in cool neon lighting, traditional artwork and other accessories, whilst a giant screen takes up one wall to show live sporting action. There is also the famous rooftop lounge offering unique views of the city, which is sure to be a smash hit now that the weather has cooled down considerably. To start with, the chefs brought out the excellent Chicken Tacos, which had a concoction of chicken, lettuce, red cabbage, sour cream, guacamole, cheese and chipotle sauce wrapped up in the softest, lightest tortilla you can imagine. The combination of flavours was truly excellent and set the stage for the rest of the evening. Hard shell tacos are also available, as are shrimp, beef, salmon and avocado versions. Of course, Mexican food needs to be washed down with a drink, and there is a vast selection of mocktails and other selected beverages to suit your needs. I tried a Primavera, featuring soda, elderflower, kiwi, lime and mint, although I will definitely be back to try some of the specially-curated creations from the experienced staff. Next up was the Supreme Nachos, which truly lived up to the name. Perfect for vegetarians, the crispy and fresh tortilla chips packed with mixed cheese, red bean puree, pico de gallo, guacamole and sour cream are great for enjoying casually whilst chatting with friends or sipping on drinks. Of course, fans of other Mexican staples such as Fajitas and Quesadillas are catered for, but it was the Barbecue section I had eyes for and it did not disappoint. The Short Ribs with Mashed Potato was simply divine. The meat was so tender and melt-in your mouth that you could eat it without teeth. It fell off the bone at the merest touch and the tangy barbecue sauce complemented it perfectly. Even the mash was at the best consistency of being smooth but not too creamy. There were so many other items on the menu I’d have loved to have tried, but I was completely stuffed. What’s for definite is that El Chapo isn’t just the place to come for the heart of the party, but for amazing food too. www.bahrainthismonth.com

Expatriate Caution

THE DANGER OF DYING IN BAHRAIN

Living in a beautiful kingdom like Bahrain, it’s quite seldom that we think of things that are daunting … like death. Bill Grieve takes a short layman’s look at what the dangers of dying in Bahrain are regarding Last Will and Testament situations, and the complications which may arise.

“Business Friendly Bahrain” are the commercial watchwords of the Kingdom; the ease of doing business, and friendliness of the local nation and its government, are an attraction which pulls businesses and people toward the small archipelago of islands that form the Kingdom of Bahrain

A problem faced by many expats in Bahrain already, has been the lack of anticipation, planning and preparation for their deaths whilst having ties and roots inside Bahrain such as bank accounts, assets and even just general accounts and the requirements of living life in Bahrain.

People come to Bahrain from all around the world because of many reasons, including business, banking, its open lifestyle, and welcoming attitude. However, Bahrain also facilitates the legal requirements of most governments from where visitors, residents and workers emanate and originate especially in the event of the passing of one of their subjects inside the Kingdom.

“Death comes for us all. Even for kings he comes …” Robert Bolt

At present, when an expat dies all bank accounts including joint accounts may be/are frozen pending a court order issued by a Bahrain court to release the funds held. To get a court order to do this in Bahrain, a duly notarised/apostilled certificate that confirms the legal heirs/beneficiaries or a court order issued by the passport

opinion issuing country of the deceased is required to be produced to the court in Bahrain. This will generally require the services of a Bahraini lawyer or appropriately qualified and positioned law firm and could take six to eight months and an additional similar period for the Bahrain Court to issue a court order releasing the funds. All wills including those attested in Bahrain are required to be executed through the local courts. For some expats this may mean that all funds inside Bahrain are frozen and that there can be no release of funds or movement/transfer of assets until the accepted Bahrain legal process is completed. Often child support, funeral payments, costs for repatriation of the body and even outstanding debts are left hanging and unpaid to the detriment of the deceased. The law that regulates deceased expatriates estates and inheritance is a law promulgated and issued in 1971 that deals with the Inheritance and Settlement of Estates of NonMuslims in Bahrain. Commercial Procedure Code of 1971 coupled with the rules and regulations of The Central Bank of Bahrain that also limits the amount of money that can be withdrawn per month pending the court order or notarisation of the will which could allow the executor to action the bank accounts without any further process or court order. In times of grief, compassion and empathy are needed however the law takes its course and often stands rigid and quite rightly so, especially in instances of doubt. Wills issued outside Bahrain need to be probated and a formal legally accepted copy of the probate is required to be legalised by the appropriate Bahrain embassy or apostilled and will be required to be submitted to the Bahrain courts to get judgement and release of the funds. Non-Muslim expatriates and non-Muslim Bahrainis can make wills in Bahrain; however,

these are required to be signed in front of a religious leader (priest or equivalent), appropriately witnessed, and attested by a public notary.

of a separate court for dealing with marriage, divorce, and inheritance and a register of wills of non-Muslim expatriates and non-Muslim Bahraini nationals.

Execution of a will in Bahrain requires approval by the court or confirmation of appointment of the executor pursuant to Article 5 of the Decree Law No. 11 of 1971.

Not having a will may lead to serious consequences, unnecessary expenses to be incurred and lengthy delays in resolving an expatriate’s affairs in Bahrain. It pays to prepare and get ready for the inevitable – there are a number of expatriate business owning families who have faced lengthy legal battles and hardship to establish their legal positions as heirs following the unexpected death of the family head in Bahrain and across the GCC. Preparing for the inevitable, even if and when you are in your prime, is in the best interest of you and your loved ones.

Several leading local lawyers are advocating for wills issued in Bahrain to be accepted by local courts as the formalities and procedures in the countries of origin are generally complicated, difficult, time consuming and expensive. Several good ideas have also been proposed by these leading lawyers in Bahrain to simplify the situation including the forming

BLOCKCHAIN

It’s so much more than you think.

This month, Pria Masson guides us through the concept of blockchain and what it can do for so many businesses. With the collapse of FTX, cryptocurrencies are in the media for all the wrong reasons. Among these many pieces, there was a large number that seemed to assume cryptocurrencies and blockchain, the technology behind cryptocurrencies, were both at risk. However, this could not be further from the truth because blockchain is the future. Cryptocurrencies, Bitcoin and NFT’s – these are merely small applications of blockchain technology.

What is blockchain technology?

Blockchain technology, at its end, is an application of Distributed Ledge Technology (DLT), which records the transaction of assets and their details in multiple places at the same time. In the ledger, each node processes and verifies each item. This then creates a record and a consensus on its accuracy. These can be used to create static records like a registry as well as a dynamic financial record. A blockchain is then a distributed ledger that tracks a shared database across multiple users. It is primarily concerned with the decentralised storage of information, consensus and accuracy of particular digital assets. With this, its application is far beyond cryptocurrencies and NFT’s. It has the potential to replace business models which rely on third party and centralised systems for verification and trust.

What are the types of blockchain?

Blockchains can be either public or private. Public blockchains do not need permissions and anyone can join the network or participate in the blockchain. Most of the crypto systems like Bitcoin, Ethereum etc. are based on the anonymous public blockchain system. Private blockchains on the other hand, are invitation only and run by a single entity. For instance, the Linux Foundation created the Hyperledger projects to support confidential commercial transactions. 68 December 2022

www.bahrainthismonth.com

commerce The type of system used depends on the ultimate aim of the system and the “somewhere in between” or hybrid options are also emerging in some areas. For these, there is a usually one central authority that controls the system but there are some permissionless processes involved. The IBM Food Trust is one such system that uses a hybrid system to connect participants across the food supply chain through a permissioned, permanent and shared record of food system data .

What we see

Which industries have potential uses for blockchain? Blockchain also has tremendous potential to help governance systems, to streamline and track logistics, healthcare, banking and other sectors. It can even help track climate change better. Supply chain management is one area where blockchain can play a pivotal role. For instance, the system can track a crop right back to the farm where it was grown while keeping a permanent record of every transaction along the way. Blockchain technology is increasingly used and essential for smart contracts and in database systems. The technology allows for the automation of agreements to be executed without the involvement of a third party. Through blockchain systems, selfexecuting components like triggers and stored procedures can be implemented which cannot be undone. This makes it a system of choice for

www.bahrainthismonth.com

The actual universe smart contracts. Smart contracts don’t only refer to cryptocurrencies and financial contracts. In healthcare, blockchain can help patients and doctors securely transfer medical information. The contracts can establish the parameters of what data can be shared. Even in the music industry, smart contracts have been used by Mediachain wherein it allows for decentralised, transparent contracts with artists. Mediachain was acquired by Spotify in 2017 to solve its attribution problem.

What’s next? The uses of blockchain appear to be across sectors. It solves the problem of manipulated data, of middlemen and of verification system errors. It’s a new tool that will allow us to have

the data we need, to track what we need and to find the problems exactly where they are based. The question then is more “life-like” than we realise – if we have the data, what we need is the knowledge to sift the big problems from the small and to perhaps learn to live with the problems that are paper-cuts. The danger is in thinking that every tiny hole needs our full attention. Too much information can give a false sense of control. It’s early days for this technology; time will tell how well it matures in its implementation. Pria is the Founder of GMI Advisory WLL– a Management Consultancy specialising in emerging businesses. THE MCLAREN ARTURA

motoring

A Revolutionary Supercar!

Motoring marques old and new are embracing a green future, with even the staunchest supercar makers swapping pure petrol-devouring beasts for electrical hybrids. Our motoring correspondent Kristian Harrison took the McLaren Artura, the company’s first production hybrid, out for a spin on Bahrain’s roads.

T

he life of a journalist is not always easy, but there are certain experiences that leave you with a deep sense of privilege. Being one of the first people in Bahrain to experience McLaren’s first high-performance hybrid supercar, the Artura, is one of those occasions. The British brand, which is part-owned by Bahrain’s sovereign wealth fund Mumtalakat, has just announced the start of regional deliveries of this beautiful motor, which the company expects to account for 50 percent of regional sales in 2023. This revolutionary supercar is a distillation of every attribute inherent in a McLaren, combined with faster throttle response, lower emissions and the ability to run in pure EV mode, thanks to its ground-breaking electrified powertrain. I was invited to put the car through its paces, starting at the Bahrain International Circuit before a jaunt down the island’s west coast and brand new highway towards Jumeirah Gulf of Bahrain Resort and Spa. Getting into the Artura, with its low roof and gullwing-opening doors, is a bit more difficult than I expected now I’m in my Thirties, but I felt like a kid again as soon as I used the plethora of switches, buttons and dials to get comfortable and fire the engine up. Or so I thought… pushing the Engine Start www.bahrainthismonth.com

button delivers the first mild surprise – the sound of silence. The first part of the journey was made in EV mode, which has a range of approximately 30km. While EV mode is clearly designed for cities, not long stretches of road, and is limited to no more than 130kmph, it actually suits the car impressively well: the Artura’s new second-gen carbon architecture stays quiet and rattle-free even without the distraction of a combustion engine. However, the fun really began when I moved up to Sport mode, which is likely to be the everyday default for anyone who buys a car like this (sorry, tree huggers!). Hearing the 2,993cc twin-turbocharged V6 engine growl into life was heavenly, and paired to an eight-speed transmission it meant for instant gratification every time I hit the accelerator. Seriously, if you’ve never been at a standstill in a sleek, curvy model like the Artura and feel the exhilaration of full acceleration, then you haven’t lived. I felt every single unit of horsepower from the 671bhp engine and while pulling 720Nm of torque, I managed to hit 0-100kmph in three seconds flat in what felt like half the time. The smoothness and speed of the upshifts was incomparable to other

similar supercars I’d driven before. My friendly co-pilot, Salman, was happy to let me explore the boundaries of the vehicle (within speed limits of course!) and really put it through its paces. In particular, I put the brakes to good use, which unlike brake-by-wire systems in similar models requires firm hydraulic pressure to slow the car down. It takes some getting used to, but on the track or in an emergency situation it’s a comforting feeling to be able to control your deceleration as accurately as possible. The handling was razor-sharp, changing direction at the flick of the wheel, although stability and control was never under any threat from fishtailing or other potential demons. My limited time with the Artura prevented me from exploring the infotainment features in great detail, but Apple CarPlay and Android Auto come as standard, along with the usual tools such as GPS navigation and Bluetooth. For the princely sum of BD107,225, this is one of, if not arguably the best hybrid supercars on the market. Alas, I will have only the memories of my half hour with the car to cherish going forwards, but if you’re interested in finding out more, visit the Kanoo Motors McLaren showroom in Tubli or visit bahrain.mclaren. com/en. A MOTORING VISIONARY

Motorcity has been one of the most successful branches of the E K Kanoo motoring company and continues to break new ground despite the difficulties posed by the COVID-19 pandemic. Kristian Harrison sat down with Saad Alzowayed, Motorcity’s Assistant General Manager of Passenger Vehicles, to find out the secrets behind the success.

M

otorcity, so called to emphasise Kanoo Motors’ vision of creating a ‘motor city’ of automobile solutions from the showroom to service and spare parts, has been riding a wave of success this year. With 15 top brands under its wing, including six passenger marques such as Volvo, Peugeot and Chery and nine commercial manufacturers including Isuzu, Hino and Daewoo Trucks, Motorcity has enjoyed high sales despite the wider industry taking a downturn. A huge portion of this success is due to Mr. Zowayed’s pre-pandemic vision. “Before lockdown, I sat down with our wider management team and we discussed what our plans would be going forward,” he explains. “I anticipated the market would struggle and that lockdown would cause huge supply issues, especially from our Chinese brands, so I made sure I ordered excess stock while I could and we stored it in a huge facility in Bahrain. We made sure that we ordered cars with the highest specs and quality rather than just saturate our showrooms with models for the sake of it.

brand has the distinction of being the highest-selling Chinese car in Bahrain’s market for two years in a row, and according to the latest figures, alternates between being the fourth and fifth biggest-selling manufacturer of all in the Kingdom. This is no mean feat considering the stigma Chinese cars have carried for a long time, but attitudes are changing and Motorcity is leading the way. “I think the mentality over Chinese cars has changed thanks to the investment into customer awareness that we’ve done,” says Mr. Zowayed. “We’ve altered the market perception by communication and demonstrations, and providing value for our customers. “Chery itself offers a 10 year, one million kilometre manufacturer warranty, which is staggering. That’s how much faith they have in the quality of their own cars, and it’s the only brand which will offer this.”

If you want to take a car for a test drive but you work long hours at the office, we’ll drop it to you there. If you don’t want to sit in traffic to visit the showroom, we’ll drop it to your house. We also won’t just give a car to you for an hour or two, but the whole weekend at your leisure,” he says. “You can speak to our staff either at home and take a virtual tour of the showroom, or you can physically come here and see the cars for yourself. We accommodate all needs,” he adds. As for the future, Mr Alzowayed is remaining tight-lipped on new acquisitions, but with a twinkle in his eye says: “We never miss an opportunity.”

Motorcity’s commercial arm continues to reap rewards, with Isuzu and Hino trucks in

“Lo and behold, when China blocked its exports and production ground to a halt, Motorcity was the only company in Bahrain with stock,” he says. It is no surprise, then, that Chery in particular has been a roaring success for Motorcity. The

THE DRIVE TO WIN! One of the biggest events on the Kingdom’s sporting calendar, the FIA World Endurance Championship 8 Hours of Bahrain, thrilled spectators at the BIC and fans watching around the globe. Kristian Harrison was at the heart of the action, watching as a guest of the United Autosports team. United Autosports was founded in 2010 by former British racing driver Richard Dean and McLaren CEO Zak Brown. The pair, who have been friends for more than 30 years, met in London and the idea to form a team sprouted quickly. “I was looking for a new venture within motorsports,” explained Mr Dean. “I wanted to get more heavily involved in the competitive side of things and to make a difference in results. “Zak is motorsport through and through; he lives, eats and breathes it, and it was a no-brainer to launch the team.” Unlike many other teams in various series and formulae which enter into the racing business and flounder, United Autosports found success relatively quickly. The team won races and championships in the UK, then Europe, before the crowning glory came in 2020 by being the first team to win all three of the European Le Mans Series LMP2 title, the FIA World Endurance Championship and the Le Mans 24 Hours all in the same year. “We’re always striving to improve,” said Mr Dean. “There’s potential for us to move up to the highest class of endurance racing, Le Mans Hypercar (LMH) and continue to push boundaries as a team. “Endurance racing is a unique challenge in motorsport and a special test for drivers. There

are multiple classes and lots of traffic at different speeds, creating a race-within-a-race. The word ‘endurance’ is very apt, with drivers, mechanics and staff all having to concentrate for a long time in the heat and intensity of race conditions.” To win the 2022 championship in Bahrain, United Autosports needed a combination of factors to go their way, including winning the race or finishing second and hoping rival outfit Jota had a very poor race or retired. Alas, the Anglo-American trio of Alex Lynn, Olly Jarvis and Josh Pierson in the #23 fell short of the title but they did wrap up the season with a second-place podium celebration under the floodlights and third in the overall championship.

much people go out of their way to greet you with VIP treatment and help you with everything from your baggage, to your hire car and your hotel.” United Autosports and the rest of the WEC teams and fans can look forward to another five years of warm welcomes and friendly atmospheres as the championship has extended its contract with the Bahrain International Circuit until 2027.

During the weekend, Mr. Dean and the drivers expressed their happiness at being in Bahrain. Mr. Dean said: “We love coming to Bahrain, it feels like a really big event with how it’s marketed. We visit lots of circuits which are all different, but we’re welcomed so warmly here. Even at the airport, it really hits you how

The new AMB 001 Pro builds on the learnings from the AMB 001 and takes track exhilaration to the extreme. The power increase comes courtesy of a new CNC-machine, dual-cylinder

997cc engine, which has been fully machined from AL 5000 solid billet. The ideal properties of the material improve the stiffness of the structural engine, whilst a new cylinder design with wet cylinder liners helps to improve cooling.

Initial orders have already been taken for the strictly limited edition AMB 001 Pro, which will be hand built at the Brough Superior factory in Toulouse, France. First deliveries will take place in Q4 2023.

Arctic Monkeys The Car The Car is in every way a sequel to Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino, the 2018 album that found Alex Turner pushing Arctic Monkeys in a jazz lounge direction. The Car is rife with signifiers of a stylish, seedy past: wah-wah guitars, swelling cinematic strings, tinkling ivories and analogue synths. What’s missing is any sense of rock and roll, a swagger that’s absent in the backbeat rhythms and falsetto croon Turner adopts for the majority of the album. Ever the wordsmith, he packs a lot of lyrics into his winding melodies yet ends up obscuring their intent by singing like a lounge singer whiling away his hours in a second-rate hotel. Hopefully this dreadful sojourn is over now and we can return to the fast, energetic and loud indie rock that made the Monkeys one of the biggest bands in the world.

Carly Rae Jepsen

Taylor Swift Midnights Verdict:

A sure-fire smash hit from the superstar

What’s the story? Inspired by the ‘sleepless nights’ of Swift’s life, her tenth album Midnights is a concept album about nocturnal contemplation, written and produced by Swift with longtime collaborator Jack Antonoff. It contains confessional yet cryptic lyrics, ruminating themes such as anxiety, insecurity, self-criticism, self-awareness, insomnia and self-confidence. Musically, Swift experimented with electronica, dream pop, bedroom pop and chill-out music styles in the album, eschewing the alternative folk sound of her 2020 releases for a return to synth-pop.

Worth a listen? Midnights is characterised by subtle grooves, vintage synthesisers, drum machine and hip hop/R&B rhythms. These compositions provide a sturdy foundation on a record that wants to capture the aimless suspension of late-night insomnia, a time filled with regret, recriminations and resignations. Swift spikes this moodiness with hints of steeliness but that’s merely an accent on an album designed to deliver variations on one specific mood. Nothing in here is surprising, but Swift’s terrifying legions of fans will gobble it up regardless and make this the biggest seller of the year.

The Loneliest Time Feeling at once separate and connected is a major motif on The Loneliest Time, particularly on ‘Talking to Yourself,’ where Jepsen sets her lingering feelings for an old flame to an ‘80s pop fantasia with massive choruses. As good as her singles are, Jepsen creates albumlength experiences, and she balances The Loneliest Time’s exuberance with just enough introspection. She embraces heartache like never before and the result is pop at its best, written by and for those who dream of something, and someone, real.

Bruce Springsteen

Only the Strong Survive Only the Strong Survive may be the first time Bruce Springsteen has recorded an album dedicated to soul and R&B, yet those styles have always been present in his music, welling up in the rhythms and outlook of the E Street Band at their most jubilant. This persistent, evident love of soul means his decision to cut a collection of covers of old R&B chestnuts isn’t surprising, nor is it a shock that the 15 songs chosen for this 2022 comp demonstrate deep knowledge and good taste; those traits have been a constant throughout Springsteen’s career. www.bahrainthismonth.com

APPS REVIEW THERE’S AN APP FOR PRACTICALLY EVERYTHING THESE DAYS, BUT WITH CHRISTMAS JUST AROUND THE CORNER WE THOUGHT THESE WERE PARTICULARLY HANDY.

Santa’s Naughty or Nice List+

NORAD Tracks Santa This is the official app of the North American Aerospace Defence Command (NORAD) Tracks Santa programme, established in 1955 to track Santa’s whereabouts around the globe as he delivers presents to kids both naughty and nice – but only if they’re asleep. It includes an arcade with different games to play every day until Christmas Eve and you can also listen to Christmas music, watch videos and read books.

This app is targeted to parents who want to have some fun with their kids and who may also want to use the authority of Santa to induce their offspring to behave. The idea is that your kids listen to a video introduction from Santa and then place one of their fingers on the touchscreen, which then scans it and produces a verdict, telling your child via colourful special effects that they’re either ‘naughty’ or ‘nice’.

Yasa Pets Christmas Christmas Countdown 2022 This fun app is an advent calendar for your phone that displays the number of days, hours, minutes and seconds until Christmas. You can choose the theme you like, and there’s a new gift to unwrap every day, giving you a fresh Christmas-themed wallpaper to boost your seasonal spirit, along with a festive fact and a link to a Christmas song.

Combining cats and Christmas is cuteness overload. This delightful app is a digital dollhouse that allows players to tap and explore as the cat family on screen celebrates Christmas Day. You can open presents, dress the cats up, set the table for dinner and lots more. It’s an ideal option for young kids and cat lovers looking to relax with a Christmassy app.

GAMES

GOD OF WAR RAGNAROK WHAT IS IT?

God of War Ragnarök is the ninth instalment in the actionadventure series. Based on Norse mythology, the game is set in ancient Scandinavia and feature series protagonist Kratos and his teenage son Atreus. Serving as the finale to the Norse era of the series, the game covers Ragnarök, the eschatological event which is central to Norse mythology and was foretold to happen in the previous game after Kratos killed the Æsir god Baldur.

GAMEPLAY

The player primarily controls the character Kratos combo-based combat and puzzle game elements. Kratos’ main weapons are a magical battle axe called the Leviathan Axe, and his signature double-chained blades, the Blades of Chaos. He also has a shield, formerly called the Guardian Shield in the previous game. A new mechanic for Ragnarök is that the blades can also be used like a grappling hook to traverse over chasms making movement much more fluid.

GRAPHICS

The game retains its crown as the king of cinematic experiences, featuring an over-the-shoulder free camera and played in a continuous shot, with no camera cuts or loading screens. The artistry bursting from every seam is astonishing, with excellent costume and world design on show. Ragnarok is incredibly well polished, with little details from the etchings on a dagger to the clunk of a cupboard door closing. It’s expertly animated too, with saliva-sputtering grimaces launching towards the lens during the heat of battle, and hair flowing realistically on Kratos’ lessfollically challenged enemies.

CALL OF DUTY: MODERN WARFARE II:

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II is the latest entry in the hugely popular first-person shooter series. Like its predecessor, the game takes place in a realistic and modern setting. The campaign follows British special forces unit Task Force 141 and Mexican Special Forces unit Los Vaqueros as they attempt to track down terrorists. Running on a new version of the IW engine, multiplayer mode supports cross-platform multiplayer and features a free-to-play Battle Royale mode, Warzone 2.0, a follow-up to the original Warzone. 84 December 2022

Tis the season for all things exquisite. This month, the extraordinary Jewellery Arabia 2022 took place and reminded us why we love all things luxury. If you plan on spoiling yourself, take a page out of our favourites and treat yourself to our top choices from JaegerLeCoultre or Roberto Coin.

THE ONLY ACCESSORY YOUR WRIST NEEDS

Jaeger-LeCoultre

Since 1833, Jaeger-LeCoultre has created over 1200 calibres that are truly sophisticated through their technical creativity. While all of the brand’s creations are truly sensational, there’s no denying that whether draped in enamel, engravings or gemstones, the Reverso is unfailingly unique representing the very best of JaegerLeCoultre. Since its creation in 1931, Reverso has created many timeless stories, establishing it as the icon of Jaeger-LeCoultre. The newest timepieces from the Reverso line such as the recently launched Reverso Tribute Duoface Calendar, preserve the legendary spirit of the original 1931 model whilst incorporating the contemporary aesthetic cues of 21st-century watchmaking. Greater depth of detail, refined execution and subtle textures define this latest release which brings a subtle touch of modern elegance to its reinterpretation of two iconic Jaeger-LeCoultre complications — the triple calendar and the Duoface. ROBERTO COIN’S EXQUISITE COLLECTIONS

A Must Have!

The celebrated luxury Italian jewellery brand, Roberto Coin, has created true masterpieces over the years. Their attention to detail and uniquely modern designs have captured our attention again with their stunning Art Decò and Venetian Princess collections.

Art Decò is one of the most successful lines in Roberto Coin’s creative spectrum. The pieces in the collection are made of geometric lines that are repeated with precision and symmetry. Tassels and chains made of irregular little spheres add a delicate touch to the collection. This mix of severity and softness makes the pieces in the Art Decò collection something unusual in the world of fine jewelry, without taking away from its aura of exclusivity. Roberto Coin has dressed these pieces in the brand’s typical colours so that each design can convey a different style. Yellow and rose gold are the soul of every piece, decorated with mysterious black jade, delicate mother-of-pearl, intense lapis lazuli, malachite or joyful turquoise; the most opulent, haute couture version is covered in white diamonds. Just like the Art Deco movement in the 1920s, these jewels have a character that is both revolutionary and curious. www.womanthismonth.com

Princess, on the other hand, is the most romantic family in Roberto Coin’s creative universe. It includes Princess, Princess Flower, Diamond Princess and Royal Princess collections and, of course, Venetian Princess. The Venetian Princess collection has a complex structure of twisted threads that are almost hidden, revealed only to the wearer. On the outside, the design is a re-interpretation of the decorations found on Venetian palaces. The play of black and white diamonds evokes a vision of the faint lights of the street lamps as they reflect off the dark waters of Venice’s canals, creating a fascinating effect. Here, too, we can find the same twisted thread detail that decorates all the jewels of the Princess family and the Barocco line, produced in 3D, to guarantee perfection and maximum solidity. The diamonds are calibrated to ¼ of a millimeter in both diameter and depth and set by hand using a microscope. The bracelet has a double click safety clasp, to insure maximum security and solidity. ehind red gates in a house in Muharraq we find the Flip Diva's home. The eclectic space is well decorated - covered in art, refurbished furniture, a mannequin light and a small workstation. Nuts, bolts, shelves and drills cover the workstation while a spirit level hangs on the side. This is where masterpieces are created… and Shoug Alainati is at the heart of it all. She is warm and welcoming while making tea for the Woman This Month team as we delve into our interview. We are celebrating Bahrain as National Day takes place on December 16, and what better way to pay homage to this island nation than to sit down with Bahrain's favourite carpenter? Shoug talks openly about her journey to getting into carpentry and refurbishment. "It started by chance. I was redecorating my room… I had one of those hormonal episodes where I needed to change my room. Back then, I didn't have much of a budget, so I Googled, started researching on YouTube, and learned how to repaint some furniture. As time passed, I realised I didn't like this piece or wished it was shorter or higher. I even had to learn how to fix furniture. After a few months of trial and error and buying a bunch of tables to paint them and try it out, I found my passion," says Shoug. From redecorating her bedroom to experimenting with a few tables to turning a hobby into a business, Shoug has managed to go from fab to Flip Diva - her online persona and company. The Flip Diva has collaborated with big names such as IKEA, turning her "side hustle" into a full-fledged career. "My friend said to me one day, why don't you develop your hobby into a business? So, I created a tray collection. I was so scared because nothing had sold for one month,” she says. “At the time, I was still working a corporate 7-to-2 job as an executive secretary.

90

December 2022

So, I gave the tea boy the trays and told him to serve tea to all the employees in the trade. I was doing my marketing! People began asking where he got them, and I sold my tray collection!” “I told my parents, and then I went ahead. Some people thought I was crazy, but others like my dad were like a gift. He's my biggest supporter,” she says. According to reports in the United States, only 5.2 percecnt of carpenters are women. In this region, reports of female carpenters have emerged from the Middle East and North Africa as anomalies. Shoug says about her trade: "I don't want to call it breaking the mould. I'm making a new one: a woman can be and do anything she wants. I've had a few doubters, people who would shake my piece to see if it's sturdy enough or ask me

technical questions about how long a screw is and things that are not common for men. Sometimes the questions feel almost like an interrogation,” she laments. "The only thing that will lead you to know what you want, who you are, and what you are capable of is trial and error. So, from the first couple of years I started, I tried everything, www.womanthismonth.com

PEOPLE | interview including construction, welding, electricity, and carpentry; I tried taking a lot of courses with carpenters, electricians, and painters. So, it's just about building your community," she adds. As we sip cups of tea and try to give her rescue cats, Harvey and Domino, equal attention, Shoug says when passions become businesses, and big-name corporations start getting involved in collaborations and commissions, it’s important to stick to your guns. "Eventually, you lose your church, and you become the merch. By this, I mean that merchandising doesn't become artisan work anymore. That's why I only do one piece. I don't do repetitive pieces, and I use recycled wood,” she says. “So recycled wood is never repeated. Any table I make, even if I make the same table with the same measurements a million times, will never be repeated because the wood I've used is recycled. Stick to your principles. Just write up it and stick to them,” she adds. For those looking to try flipping and refurbishing locally, Shoug advises starting small with a table or chair. As for finding pieces to flip, she says: "You have to start with your neighbourhood and your house first because I am sure there are a million hidden pieces somewhere in the house that you think you should replace, but you don't need to. Ask around in your neighbourhood or local community. If you're going bigger, try thrift shops like the one run by BSPCA. Alternatively, make your thrift shop with your family and friends by swapping things. And don't think of pieces as being used; think of them as vintage!” If you would like to know more about Shoug and check out her work, you can follow her on Instagram @theflipdiva.

Being a first-time mother can be challenging; for first-time mothers going through the experience during COVID-19, it was even more so. The renowned fashion, lifestyle and motherhood influencer Roshini Daswani Kewalram not only rose to the occasion, but also conceptualised the luxury baby lifestyle brand Milk It Baby. She tells Farah Baig her story.

eing an international influencer, Roshini Daswani Kewalram is no stranger to the vast majority of people. The visionary young woman has amassed over 59,000 social media followers spread all across the world over the years. Roshini was born and raised in Hong Kong, one of the most fast-paced and inspiring cities in the world, and ended up doing her undergrad in London where she met her husband, Raj Kewalram. “Following our marriage, I moved to Bahrain where I started off as a model which quickly evolved into influencing,” she says, adding that she believes it is important for an influencer to be responsible about what they promote online. Aside from sharing products that fit her ethos and personal style, her innovative content and fun transitions grew her following. After the birth of her daughter, her content resonated with a new demographic: young and first-time mothers. “I was in Hong Kong with my mother and daughter at the time. Due to COVID restrictions, we ended up being apart from my husband for a year, and other mothers felt for us and would often connect with me,” she says. While on the hunt for baby products, she struggled to find necessities which would match the aesthetic of her neutral-toned house. “We also weren’t travelling during the pandemic and I’d imagine what it might be like to take my daughter to cities like London where I’d met her father. I thought ‘How cool would it be to make a playmat where your child could have their first adventure from the

comfort of their own home?’ and that’s where it all started,” she explains. Roshini set out to find manufacturers, came up with designs and ultimately co-founded Milk It Baby with her brother, sister-in-law and husband. Milk It Baby has several unique and beautiful products but its reversible play mats inspired by cities (Hong Kong, London, Los Angeles, New York and Paris) are the most coveted. “Beautiful illustrations of landmarks, food, and people dressed the way they do allow your child to experience these cultures without having to travel. These can be reversed to a more neutral, rug-like design too,” she says. “They’re the safest choice for babies and toddlers as they are made from sustainable and non-toxic material, and are free from PVC, BPA and latex,” she adds. Milk It Baby’s teethers are equally unique with their fun designs of milkshakes, coconut water, lattes and more. “I got the idea for them when I was out getting coffee with my daughter and asked her to cheers. I’ve also designed sleeved bibs, and bibs with bowls on the bottom,” she says. This is in addition to the suction bamboo tableware to avoid spills at meal time. The brand is clearly not only aesthetic, but caters to the needs and concerns of parents. Milk It Baby ships worldwide and has been launched by Kewalram in the region. “We’ve had a great response from all over the world and are also very popular among people in Dubai, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and more. Going through a list of things you need as a firsttime mother can be overwhelming, but with a baby lifestyle brand like ours, you don’t need as much as you have essential, high-quality products for your child,” she says of the brand made by a mother for mothers. The products are available at www.kewalrams. com, at Kewalram stores and at Baby Essentials in Seef Mall. The products will soon be also be made available at other physical stores across the region. Be sure to follow @roshinidaswani on Instagram for updates.

Bahraini Women's Day

CELEBRATING BAHRAINI WOMEN’S DAY Bahraini women have made tremendous progress in all facets of society over the years. On the occasion of Bahraini Women’s Day, Eman Deabil shares her thoughts, and verified facts and figures, in relation to some of their most recent achievements It’s no secret that the Supreme Council for Women under the royal presidency of Her Royal Highness Princess Sabeeka bint Ibrahim Al Khalifa, the wife of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, has dedicated December first of every year to be Bahraini Women’s Day. On this occasion, I would like to congratulate all Bahraini women on their notable accomplishments. Whether you are a woman striving to thrive and advance in your

career, a mother taking care of the future generations, or a student fighting to equip yourself with knowledge, you all deserve a warm round of applause and a sincere appreciation for all the efforts you’re making to further develop this country. The Supreme Council for Women, which was established in 2001, consists of 16 members who are public female figures experienced in women's affairs and various other activities. The main aspiration of the Council is to

empower women and help them prosper in a healthy environment governed by justice and enabled by equal opportunities. Since its inception, the Council has worked on setting a promising national strategy to enable the advancement of Bahraini women which can be attained through effective partnerships with all official institutions. I would also like to congratulate the Supreme Council for Women on its 21st anniversary and stellar achievements.

Recent developments in the Kingdom are in line with the Council’s aspirations, and in light of the royal directives of His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Crown Prince and Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Bahrain: • The Governor of the Central Bank of Bahrain (CBB), Rasheed Al-Maraj issued provisions related to enhancing the representation of women on the boards of directors of listed companies (the percentage of women representation is currently at 5.9 percent – highlighted in the September edition of Woman This Month).

96

December 2022

• The former Minister of Industry and Commerce, Zayed bin Rashid Al-Zayani, issued a decision to amend the provisions of the Corporate Governance, taking into account the representation of women in the formation of the board of directors of listed companies. • Disclosure of membership statistics

classified by gender for the company’s board of directors should be made available in the company's annual report, annual corporate governance report. In addition, it’s one of the key metrics that should be reported as part of the annual sustainability/ESG voluntary reports (a reporting guide was issued by Bahrain Bourse). www.womanthismonth.com

Bahraini Women's Day What’s more, in the last decade, we were able to observe how Bahraini women were shining in various fields and at different levels. For instance, we were able to see three Bahraini businesswomen in the Forbes Middle East list for the year 2022: Mona Yousuf Almoayyed, Managing Director at Y.K. Almoayyed & Sons (#13), Najla Al Shirawi, CEO at SICO BSC (#45), and Narjes Farookh Jamal, COO at Bahrain Bourse (#50).

The Council of Representatives is another recent example of how Bahraini women have paved their path, climbed up the ladder and positioned themselves in the community. The table below illustrates where we were and where we stand as of now (an increase of 20 percent over 20 years):

The increase in percentages indicates many meanings; but mainly the following: • Women over the years were able to build and accumulate the required competencies (eg. community serving) to be confident enough and nominate themselves for such responsibilities. • Women were able to establish the required trust between them and the people, and between them and the government. They were able to stand out and make a difference. • The number of supporters (be it men or women) to women (with the right capabilities) have increased exponentially, and gender is no longer a prevalent factor to vote as long you vote for the right person.

Growth

Aurora50 is a Gulf-wide social enterprise helping to create inclusive workplaces with a series of diversity and inclusion programmes for businesses. Diana Wilde, the founder of Aurora50, shared her thoughts on the occasion: “The theme for this year’s Bahraini Women’s Day is ‘Read - Learned - Participated’ and we can see that this is being enthusiastically adopted. Bahrain now insists on equal pay for work of equal value, regardless of gender. This has seen it leap 18 places up the World Bank’s international Women, Business and the Law index this year. Worldwide, it has made the most progress on the index’s pay indicator. “Like Saudi Arabia, Bahrain has also eliminated restrictions on women working in jobs previously considered dangerous for them. And the Supreme Council has mandated Equal Opportunity Committees at all Bahraini public- and private-sector organisations”. “As we celebrate the women of Bahrain today, the progress in gender equity at work is clear. Aurora50 believes that organisations will thrive if they champion diversity at all levels - from the board and senior leadership to the newest recruits. The phenomenal changes made to offer equal opportunities and pay in Bahrain this year will help both women and the companies they work for to thrive,” concludes Ms. Wilde. For the people who think that we have reached our limits and ‘women empowerment’ is just a fad that will fade away, we say: “The story has just started, it has no end… and we have no limits!”

Learning

HOW TO LOSE All our lives, we’ve been taught that winning is the key to success. Quite the contrary to this popular teaching, Ouiam El Hassani explains how teaching our kids how to lose can be the best thing we do for them.

Whether it’s a fierce family board game or cheering from the field’s sidelines, it’s fun to watch your kids learn to compete. Games and competitive sports are fun, and they can help foster self-esteem and feelings of accomplishment for children. But what happens when your child responds to a victory by bragging—or a loss with a tantrum? I am certain we were all there at some point, but what to do? As parents, it can be hard to see your child act like a so-called “sore loser,” but the truth is that teaching children to lose graciously is an essential part of growing up. It’s a developmental milestone that can take some time and practice for children to master (and let’s face it, some adults could use a little refresher too). It’s normal for kids to have feelings about losing, but how you respond to those feelings can shape their future attitude. No one likes to lose, not our children and not us. But as parents, it is vital that we validate their feelings too and model desirable behaviours. So, what are you supposed to do when your child throws a tantrum after losing? Empathising and making your child feel understood is the first step. Still, it’s important to set boundaries around acceptable behaviour or what’s off limits for your family: name calling, physical aggression or any other destructive behaviour. Let them feel all the feels, then help them find healthy ways to deal with their emotions. Some coping strategies include using words to express their feelings or breathing exercises (mamas can use these too). Teaching this behaviour starts with parents because those little eyes watch everything we do. Model good sportsmanship yourself and manage your own emotional response. Congratulate the winner even if it’s not your player or your child’s team, cheer on other players, and don’t yell if you don’t agree with the call. Letting your child win all the time doesn’t teach them how to lose, in fact, it doesn’t teach them anything at all. We’ve all been there, especially with younger kids. You want them to succeed so badly that you give them an extra turn or let them win, maybe to avoid a tantrum, but it’s not doing them any favours. Letting your child win sometimes is OK, but if they never experience losing then you might be actually harming them. We falsely inflate their ego and forfeit teaching www.womanthismonth.com

our children some critical life lessons, like learning how to fail. Life is full of failure, that’s how we grow and learn, and we want our children to have the tools to deal with it. Our job as parents is to prepare our children for the real world. Our children need to know that they are good, capable and smart, whether they win or they lose. Sports teams are a great way to learn about cooperation and competition, but a child’s age can dictate how they understand and process the concept. Preschoolers and young children are more likely to have a tantrum or pout after losing. Younger children are egocentric, so they believe the world revolves around them. Teaching them about the importance of teams and cooperation in a group setting can be fun, but a noncompetitive environment is best. However, with older children, it is best to offer them all kinds of opportunities and to gently push them to try different things even if the outcome is uncertain. Highlight that the efforts made during the game are the real achievement and they should be proud of that. In general - as with any other skill - time and patience should be your best friends when teaching your kids how to lose gracefully. December 2022

It’s no secret that Germany is considered one of the top tourism destinations in the world, and it’s clear why. The German National Tourist Board (GNTB) recently revealed Germany’s Top 100 tourist spots which include Hamburg’s Miniatur Wunderland and Rust’s Europa-Park. The rankings are the result of more than 15,000 travellers from 30 countries voting between December 2021 and June 2022. Here are the ‘Top 10’ destinations, according to the list, which should help you plan a fantastic vacation:

#1 Miniatur Wunderland

This is quite possibly one of the most unique tourist attractions you will ever visit. In the year 2000, brothers Frederik and Gerrit Braun set out to build the largest model railway system in the world. Today, this attraction covers 1000 square metres and includes different countries and even a miniature airport. It features miniature versions of Hamburg, the mountainous German region of the Harz, the Austrian Alps, France, Italy, North-America and Scandinavia too. The ever-expanding attraction recently dedicated a space to the various landmarks of Italy. Small-scale versions of Monaco, Provence and South America are scheduled to follow.

#2 Europa-Park

Being the largest theme park in Germany, Europa Park is the second most popular theme park in Europe, after Disneyland Paris. The attraction, which is located in Rust, has over 100 attractions, 18 themed areas, six themed hotels and even its associated water world Rulantica for those wishing to take a dip. Europa-Park will undoubtedly be a great addition to your travel itinerary!

#3 Rothenburg ob der Tauber

Located in northern Bavaria, this quaint German town is known for its unique medieval architecture. Colourful half-timbered houses line the cobblestone lanes of its old town. There’s plenty to be discovered with its preserved gate houses and towers. In fact, we’re positive you’ll enjoy a visit to the covered walkway atop St. Jakob’s Church which houses an intricate, late Gothic altarpiece by woodcarver Tilman Riemenschneider.

#4 Phantasialand Brühl

Approximately two million visitors are attracted to this theme park in Brühl every year. You’re sure to find Phantasialand magical with its world record holding attractions. Be sure to experience their six different themed worlds: Berlin, China Town, Deep in Africa, Fantasy, Mexico and Mystery. Artistic shows and a variety of themed oriented snacks and restaurants are sure to keep you busy too! If you plan on having an extended trip to the expansive venue, you’ll be happy to know that they have two hotels: Hotel Ling Bao in ‘China Town‘ and Hotel Matamba in ‘Deep in Africa‘. www.womanthismonth.com

#5 Berlin

When visiting any country, it only makes sense to check out the capital at least once! Berlin is one of the most vibrant cities in Europe with its variety of dining, entertainment and shopping venues. It’s also one of the region’s top-rated cultural destinations with several fantastic art galleries and museums, some of which are located on Museum Island. For entertainment, you’re sure to enjoy the worldrenowned Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, or enjoy strolling around visiting historic landmarks such as the Berlin Wall.

#6 Black Forest National Park

The beautiful Black Forest with its dark, densely-wooded hills is one of the most visited upland regions in all of Europe. Situated in the south-western corner of Germany and extending 160km from Pforzheim in the north to Waldshut on the High Rhine in the south, it‘s a hiker‘s dream. On the west side, it descends steeply to the Rhine, crossed by lush valleys, while on the east, it slopes more gently down to the upper Neckar and Danube valleys. Popular spots include Germany‘s oldest ski area at Todtnau, the magnificent spa facilities of Baden-Baden, and the attractive resort of Bad Liebenzell.

#7 Rothenburg ob der Tauber Criminal Museum

The Medieval Crime Museum is located in the former St. John's Commandery in Rothenburg. This museum was built between 1393 and 1410 together with the neighbouring St. John's Church. The building currently has baroque style architecture. This might not be everyone’s cup of tea, but it sure is a unique experience! The Medieval Crime Museum, features over 50,000 “exhibits” from a time when peculiar and particularly harsh punishments were implemented in Germany.

#8 Dresden

Dresden is the capital city of the German state of Saxony and is the 12th most populous city of Germany. This beautiful city is rich in art and history and is a delight for people who enjoy discovering towers, spires, domes, palaces, churches and other breath-taking architecture. Notably, Dresden remains a major cultural centre of historical memory, owing to the city's destruction in World War II. Hence on February 13 every year, the anniversary of the British and American fire-bombing raid that destroyed most of the city, tens of thousands of people gather to commemorate the event.

#10 Neuschwanstein Castle #9 Moselle Valley

If you love nature, you’ll find that the spectacular Moselle Valley is a treat for the senses. River Moselle, a tributary of the mighty River Rhine, winds through some of the most spectacular landscapes in Germany making it the perfect district to recharge your mental battery. Lush vineyards, river promenades, little villages, rolling hills and ancient castles make it the perfect vacation destination. www.womanthismonth.com

Germany is home to some of the most impressive castles in all of Europe and has an estimated 20,000 castles across the country. Of these, the Neuschwanstein Castle is said to be one of Europe’s most famous and picturesque. The towered fortress was built by King Ludwig II of Bavaria and is interestingly the inspiration behind Walt Disney‘s famous theme park castles. If you’re looking for a starting point for your visit, consider the old town of Füssen. December 2022

JUST THE REMEDY!

STIMULATING HAIR GROWTH

Lavender has been a staple ingredient in beauty products and traditional medicine for centuries. Its fresh, alluring fragrance is well known for its relaxing and soothing powers. We explore five beauty benefits that lavender oil has on skin and hair. Recent research conducted by the team at WeThrift revealed that over the last month, searches for lavender oil have increased by 68 percent. This may be due to the fact that other than being a wonderfully fragrant oil, it has medicinal and healing properties which do wonders for your skin and hair. Here are some reasons why you should add lavender oil to your beauty bag:

SOOTHES ECZEMA AND DRY SKIN

Hair thinning and hair loss can be caused by several factors, including over-styling, genetics, hormones, medications and stress. The anti-microbial properties in lavender can help create a cleaner scalp, which is essential for hair growth and be beneficial to alopecia. The chemical compounds within the oil can also ease inflammation and promote hair growth. The oil can keep your scalp healthy, nourish hair follicles, fight breakage and split ends, keeping locks strong from root to tip.

TREATS DANDRUFF

Dandruff is a chronic condition that occurs when the scalp becomes dry, red, itchy, and produces dead skin cells. It can worsen during periods of stress, sickness and can even be triggered when the weather changes. Lavender oil’s natural antifungal and antiseptic properties can prevent bacteria and fungi from growing on your scalp. Combined with anti-inflammatory benefits, it can help soothe itchiness and dryness on your scalp and fight dandruff or common scalp infections. For the most effective results, mix a few drops of lavender oil with coconut oil, massage into the scalp and hairline and then rinse.

Eczema is a chronic skin condition that is characterised by itchiness, inflammation, swelling and cracked skin on your body. Due to its antifungal properties, lavender can reduce inflammation and help soothe eczemaprone skin. Additionally, the antiseptic properties of lavender can help to speed up the headline process of burns and treat acne and eczema scars. To reap the benefits of lavender oil, gently massage directly onto the affected skin.

DETOXIFICATION AND ACNE REDUCTION

Since it has anti-bacterial properties, lavender oil can prevent and heal acne breakouts and improve overall skin health. Acne typically forms when your skin doesn’t produce enough natural oil. Dry skin can be a result of low or depleted oil production, and can often lead to clogged pores and acne. Using lavender oil can gently moisturise the skin. To use the essential oil, dilute it with coconut oil or another carrier oil and apply a small amount directly to your skin after washing your face.

104

December 2022

HELPS PREVENT WRINKLES

Lavender oil’s skin rejuvenating properties can effectively delay the appearance of fine lines, age spots, wrinkles and sunspots when directly applied to the skin. It’s rich in antioxidants which help stimulate the activity of your body’s natural antioxidant processes and help to tackle free radicals. Give it a try and you’re sure to notice a reduction in the appearance of wrinkles around the mouth, under the eyes, forehead and chin, providing it with a more youthful appearance. www.womanthismonth.com

In Her Shoes

The beautiful Kingdom of Bahrain gives us the opportunity to be introduced to women from all over the world who surprise and inspire us. This month, we give you a glimpse into the life of a unique young professional, the Director of Public Relations Communications at Four Seasons Hotel Bahrain Bay, Tugce Goksel. When asked who she is, she responds “This is a difficult question to start with.” What she could tell us though is that she considers herself to be a down-to-earth, self-motivated, detail-oriented, and realistic person who is always curious to learn new things. And, of course, she can be pretty fun when she wants to be.

What is a cause you are passionate about and why?

Girls’ education because I believe it is the biggest asset one can get in life. If provided the same opportunities, women can achieve anything in life.

What would your life be incomplete without?

My family of course, like most of us. But if we are speaking of belongings or activities, my life would be incomplete if I didn’t travel or read. My home is where my books are, so I have already made a library for myself in Bahrain.

Your go-to flavour of ice cream is: Strawberry

What is your favourite movie? I can’t name a single movie, but The Prestige and Inception are some of my favourites.

Tugce Goksel

What is the greatest piece of advice you have ever received?

That small but continuous efforts make a difference, and one should take one day at a time.

What is your favourite song to sing at karaoke, and why? I am not a karaoke person. :) www.womanthismonth.com

Name three things you never leave the house without.

I always have my sunglasses, lipstick, and perfume with me.

Where are you from and what’s your favourite thing about home?

I am from Istanbul. Whether it is cultural diversity, immense history, nature, delicious cuisine, or entertainment you are looking for, the city has it all. Istanbul never stops fascinating and inspiring you, which is my favourite thing about my hometown.

Cats or dogs?

Dogs. I’ve never had one, but I plan to adopt one someday. Or maybe two! December 2022
