Welcome to a New Year with Bahrain This Month. 2022 has been quite a rollercoaster for us all, and we can’t wait to see what 2023 has in store.

Following a spectacular festive season, January is likely to be a little more laid-back, with fewer events organised across the island. Needless to say, we’ve put together a list of some of the very best options for you to enjoy, and you’ll be able to find more on our website bahrainthismonth.com throughout the month.

That being said, it seems that January will be a month to savour everything from afternoon teas to roast dinners; an Orthodox Christmas brunch to a Chinese New Year feast as well as some classic Indian food on India’s Republic Day! You’ll find it all, aside from our exciting review of the Turkish restaurant Gunaydin in our Dining section this month.

With New Year resolutions in full swing, January is a month for us to pursue positive changes. With health and wellness at the forefront, we’re happy to share the final segment of American Mission Hospital’s rich 120-year history. In addition, we spoke to the Head of the Plastic Surgery and Dermatology Department at Middle East Hospital, Dr. Paulo Hypacio Espinola who enlightened us on some of the most popular plastic surgery procedures including those following a massive weightloss.

Bahrain’s community is extremely diverse with a highly significant expatriate population. We take great pride in connecting every segment of the community and this month were happy to sit down and chat with HE Tirtha Raj Wagle, the Ambassador of Nepal to Bahrain about the Nepali community he oversees here as well as Nepals phenomenally successful tourism industry.

Our interviewee this month is the talented Bahrain-based French artist, Arnaud Rothfuss, who is having his own art exhibition in Paris this month. In addition, as a proven senior level consultant to key management figures, Bill Grieve provides an insight into the value of high-performance executive level managers, the role of professional consultants, and the pitfalls and fallacies surrounding many consultants and consulting firms.

The American Mission Hospital will celebrate 120 years of its service on January 26, 2023. Here is the third and final segment of their rich history.

In the first 40 years of the American Mission Hospital’s existence, it weathered the storms of the Spanish Flu, the fall of the Ottoman Empire and two world wars. However, in the recent 40 years, it had to deal with astounding medical and technological changes and international healthcare regulatory systems, not to mention the COVID-19 Pandemic, to which it lost one of its physicians.

By the 1980s, free government healthcare services had become stronger in Bahrain and the American Mission Hospital had to face a decrease in patient numbers. The early 2000s also saw many new private hospitals open up, bringing in new upheavals. All the while, the need for the latest and the most sophisticated medical technology demanded funds which this not-for-profit organisation could not easily

afford. But, thanks to the support of the benevolent rulers of this beautiful country and to some fundraising activities, the hospital not only survived but thrived.

With resilience, it kept providing healthcare on the principles of ‘grace, compassion and love’, which it proudly announces in its mission statement. During all its work, it did not stop its community outreach projects, offering free medical help to the old, the underprivileged, and the differently abled.

In 2007, it became the first private hospital to get an accreditation from an International Council on Healthcare Quality Standards. It won diamond accreditation twice consecutively, in 2017 and 2021, from NHRA Bahrain. Its quality processes are also ISO certified. And, most recently, in 2021, it became

the first private hospital in Bahrain to get the prestigious CAP accreditation for its pathology and laboratory science department. Through the opening of a new pediatric treatment unit, an imaging centre for radiology, a large new hospital building in Saar, two more clinics in Amwaj and Riffa, a huge accommodation block for staff in the Gudaibiya-Hoora area and a Developmental Unit for Children with Special Needs, the hospital’s resolve and adaptability can be seen as noteworthy.

As it now celebrates 120 years in January 2023, with the opening of its new state of the art King Hamad American Mission Hospital in A’Ali, by bringing in world class collaborations and innovations, it says it will not waver in offering the best patient experience possible.

1988. The then ruler of Bahrain, the late Amir Shaikh Isa bin Salman Al Khalifa, seen with the hospital leadership. Beside the late Amir, in front, is Donald F Hepburn, the Honorary Chairman of the hospital’s Board of Directors, who was then the CEO of Bapco.

1992. Shaikh Isa, the ruler of Bahrain, opening an Art Exhibition marking 100 years of medical service by the American Mission. It was in 1882 that Samuel Zwemer started a dispensary in Manama souq, that later grew into a hospital.

2010. HRH Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the Crown Prince, Deputy Supreme Commander and Prime Minister receiving Dr George Cheriyan, the 11th Chief Medical Officer of the hospital in its history of 110 years.

2015. His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa receiving the Board of Directors of the hospital.

2018. His Excellency Justin Siberell, US Ambassador to Bahrain, being shown a painting depicting historic US-Bahrain relations through the healthcare organisation’s service in healthcare.

2019. A new building for staff accommodation was built on Zubara Avenue, in the Gudaibiya-Hoora area.

A MASTER OF AESTHETICS

Cosmetic surgery procedures have been growing in popularity across Bahrain. This month, we spoke to the Head of the Plastic Surgery and Dermatology Department at Middle East Hospital, Dr. Paulo Hypacio Espinola. The Consultant Plastic Surgeon enlightened us on some of the most popular plastic surgery procedures while quelling common misconceptions.

With over 17 years of experience in the surgical field, Dr. Paulo Hypacio Espinola has successfully completed over 4000 surgeries. In addition, he is a member of the Brazilian Society of Plastic Surgery and American Society of Plastic Surgeons, and was previously a Professor at Medical Residency in Plastic Surgery at the Federal University of Pernambuco. Dr. Paulo has been a resident of Bahrain for five years now and brings a wealth of experience and highly significant specialities to the renowned healthcare provider, Middle East Hospital. “I specialised in cosmetic surgery with a focus on body contouring surgery and facial surgery, in addition to significant experience in breast surgeries,” says Dr. Paulo. “Reconstructive surgery such as breast reconstruction, and head and neck reconstruction are part of my skills.”

The most popular surgical procedures in Bahrain are tummy tucks, liposuction and breast lifts while botox, fillers and skin boosters are the most sought-after nonsurgical procedures. “Following a massive

weightloss, surgeries are indicated in those areas where patients have sagging skin. Procedures including tummy tuck, breast lift, gynecomastia, torsoplasty, thigh lift, arm lift, butt lift and face lift can improve the patient’s self-esteem in addition to social relationships,” he explains.

Tummy tucks have been sought-after worldwide as the procedure can treat all layers of the abdomen. “Through this surgery we can remove hanging skin and excess fat while fixing the gap between the muscles, known as recti diastasis, which is very common after pregnancy or if the patient gained too much weight,” he says.

The surgery is not a weight loss surgery, but rather a surgery to define the body contour.

“Downtime following the surgery is generally smooth, but the patient must wear a compression garment for approximately six weeks and follow the doctor’s instructions.

They must also practice healthy lifestyle habits to not lose the result,” he says.

Patients are encouraged to undergo plastic surgery procedures during winter as they aid

the recovery process. “Surgeries performed in winter tend to cause less swelling consequently providing a faster recovery, with less pain and less fluid retention,” he explains. “In addition, it’s common to use garments after procedures such as liposuction, abdominoplasty or breast augmentation. Low temperatures allow the use of post-operative girdles and bras in a more comfortable and discreet way.”

Undergoing surgery during winter also prepares the body for exposure to the sun, allowing patients to enjoy the beach and pool while showing the satisfactory results of a surgery that has been well recovered from.

“I believe it is important that patients be careful with what they see on the internet and social media as, unfortunately, there is a lot of digital manipulation. Discuss your expectations, results, risks and post-operative follow-up with your surgeon. Each patient is different so we need to have real expectations. Never compare yourself to a celebrity, artist or even some before and after photos,” he concludes.

NATIONAL DAY CELEBRATIONS

On the occasion of the National Day of Bahrain, festivities were held across the island including the Askar & Jaw National Dance Ardah at Khalifa City, performances and arts and crafts events at the Bahrain National Museum, and a drone show at the Bahrain Bay area to name a few.

REPRESENTING THE PEOPLE OF NEPAL

Bahrain has long been known for its diverse community with a significant number of expatriates from every corner of the world. The Nepali community has had a presence in Bahrain for decades and has grown to over 20,000 individuals. The Ambassador of Nepal to the Kingdom of Bahrain, His Excellency Tirtha Raj Wagle, has 27 years of experience in the foreign service and arrived in Bahrain in August 2022. He tells us about his primary areas of focus, his thoughts on the Kingdom and why Nepal is a great tourist destination.

Your Excellency, could you kindly tell our readers about yourself?

This is my first ambassadorship and I feel honoured to represent Nepal in the Kingdom of Bahrain. I have gained diverse experience working in the Foreign Ministry and Nepali diplomatic missions abroad. In fact, I was in this region 20 years ago in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia from 1997 to 2001. At the time we only had one embassy in the Gulf. So, from Riyadh we used to look after all the GCC countries, including Bahrain.

Since then, I have had two bilateral postings, and two multilateral postings. Besides Riyadh, I was in New Delhi at the Embassy of Nepal between 2012 to 2016 as political Counsellor. And, of the two multilateral postings, I was in Nepal’s Permanent Mission to the UN in New York as First Secretary between 2005 to 2009; and most recently between 2018 to 2021 I was the Deputy Permanent Representative at the Permanent Mission of Nepal to the United Nations Office in Geneva. Before coming to the Kingdom, I was in Kathmandu at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs as Joint Secretary for the South Asia Division.

Approximately how many Nepali nationals are there now in Bahrain?

There are around 21,000. The Nepali community has had a presence here for the last three decades and since I was previously in Riyadh, I can say we had around 5,000 people at the time.

The majority of the Nepali nationals are in the construction sector while the rest of them are in the security and hospitality sector and general work categories - semi-skilled and lowskilled categories.

What is your primary focus here in Bahrain? We particularly have an interest in strengthening cooperation in the labour sector, tourism sector and trade and investment sector.

At the moment in Nepal, we have semi-skilled and low-skilled workers. However, we have talented, qualified people in the IT sector, hospitality management at restaurants and hotels and in the nursing sector too. We can contribute to the workforce in these areas and believe it would further strengthen our bilateral relations.

Which particular areas do you think have the potential to increase trade between Bahrain and Nepal?

The trade sector between Bahrain and Nepal needs to be explored more. Potential areas include the Nepal’s products such as tea, coffee, carpets, garments, handicrafts, jewellery (particularly silver jewellery) and herbal products for medical uses. We have conventional herbs, like those in India, available in Nepal as they have similar

traditional knowledge.

We do not have direct flights at the moment and are working on possibly having a direct flight so trade can be expanded. We have encouraged Gulf Air to resume their flights, as well as Nepal Airlines and another private sector airline in Nepal.

Nepal is obviously a major tourist destination. How popular is the nation amongst local and expatriate travellers from Bahrain?

At the moment we are gaining more interest from Bahrainis as well as expats. Particularly after the climbing of Mount Everest by the Royal Guard team, many tourists, not only from Bahrain but from other Gulf countries too, are interested in learning more about Nepal’s tourism sector.

So, we are promoting Nepal as a destination for nature, culture as well as adventure. In terms of nature, we have wonderful biological diversity. As I just mentioned we have various plants, but we also have places such as the Chitwan National Park which has one-horned rhinoceroses – an endangered animal. On the cultural side, we have a very long and rich history and hence have a multitude of cultural sites. Finally, mountaineering, paragliding, river rafting, are some of the activities that adventure-seekers would certainly enjoy. These are some of the reasons why many tourists find Nepal to be a fascinating and memorable destination.

What can you tell us about the role of cultural exchange between the two countries and also upcoming community events arranged by the embassy?

In reference to cultural exchanges between the two governments, we are currently focusing on establishing a bilateral consultation mechanism between the Nepal Foreign Ministry and Bahrain Foreign Ministry. Through that cooperation we will explore avenues of further cooperation in various sectors. Otherwise, we have a very significant Nepali community here. They come from different ethnic backgrounds representing a number of geographical areas of Nepal, and have established their community association here in Bahrain. Of course, whenever there are any festivals, they organise community events and invite the embassy to attend the occasion.

What are your thoughts on Bahrain in the brief time that you’ve been here?

Oh, it’s really a very welcoming society. In Nepal we have a saying ‘Atithi Devo Bhava’ which translates to ‘Guests are like God’ and that’s the way we treat tourists and foreigners. I find that welcoming and open-minded approach here in the kingdom too. Everywhere I go, people are smiling and spreading very positive vibes – they are peace loving, promoting peace and coexistence. It’s the most beautiful thing here.

When I came here in August, I had the opportunity of attending Diwali festivals here as I was invited by some families. When I went there, I was surprised to see that everyone was there, including members of the royal family, friends, Hindu community people, other ethnic and religious communities - they were all enjoying together. I think that is truly beautiful in this Kingdom.

On a personal basis, are you here with your family?

I’m here with my wife and at the moment my parents are also here for short visit. I have two grown children in university; my daughter and son are currently in Bahrain too for their winter break.

What about your hobbies, Your Excellency? What do you do in your time off?

During my time off I enjoy reading books and sometimes book reviews. I also enjoy reading poetry which I find very interesting. Surfing the web and TV channels is also a hobby and I love taking walks in my free time. I also previously mentioned the community groups which invite us to events that they organise on the weekends. When I find the time, I accept those invitations and attend.

Is there anything else that you would like to add?

I appreciate this opportunity to serve as Nepal’s ambassador to the Kingdom of Bahrain. I’ve seen that the Nepali community are happy living and working here, and I’m truly honoured to serve here in a very homely, warm country. Also, with the New Year approaching, I extend my warm wishes for a very healthy, happy, peaceful and prosperous new year 2023 to everyone.

Arnaud Rothfuss is one of Bahrain’s most talented professional artists, whose work has been commissioned both publicly and privately. Most impressively, his incredible creations have been displayed in various galleries and this month, his work will be exhibited in Paris for the first time. Kristian Harrison caught up with him ahead of this momentous occasion.

Arnaud, 36, has always had an affinity for the ‘middle east’. This is the region of France he hails from, specifically the city of Besançon, and eight years ago he made Bahrain his home.

Initially an employee of an interior design company, for the last three years he has been a full-time artist in partnership with Marylou, another famous French artist in the Kingdom. Their work incorporates a variety of techniques, from street art to fine art, painted on various surfaces; walls, canvasses, wood and fabric. In fact, chances are you’ve seen one of their spectacular live performances during Bahrain’s festivals and celebrations.

Arnaud always believed he was meant to be an artist. “Drawing and painting have been a part of my life since I was five years old, so you can say I consider myself a kind of ‘Artddicted’,” he says.

“I began sketching comic books and Japanese manga characters in school; after a while, I

turned my attention to drawing landscapes and portraits, and after that I became interested in hip-hop culture and graffiti.

“In my early 20s, I started creating amateur illustrations as a hobby which soon evolved into a passion once I started using spray paint, and taking Marylou’s example, I came to realise that it is possible to pursue our passions professionally.”

Arnaud’s exhibition is his first outside of the Middle East, and it is even more special being in his native France. It began on December 28 at the Legacy Store Paris, located at the luxury Hotel Barrière Fouquet on the iconic ChampsElysées, and will run throughout January.

Legacy Store Paris’ display windows are home to some of the most coveted and cutting-edge creations in the markets of technology, lifestyle, fashion and art. The exhibition, which he labels as “an incredible honour,” will be a representation of the originality and creativity of the store and includes a series of unique

paintings done on wood, canvas and fabric, which thematically diversify well-known characters with a humorous touch.

Many of the pieces were influenced by Arnaud’s experiences in Bahrain. “My art is largely influenced by a mix of my adopted Khaleeji culture and my European heritage,” he argues.

“To me, art is ultimately about opening up the world to infinite possibilities. I believe that the merging of cultures is the future – it inspires unique art, such as my painting of the traditional ghutra with a twist.

“This is actually my all-time favourite as the process and finish is a unique piece of art.”

As for the future, Arnaud has started doing customised paintings on sneakers and will soon be launching his own dedicated website.

A TRUE FEAST AT GÜNAYDIN

Turkey is one of the most popular tourist destinations among GCC nationals, with food being a major driving factor for its popularity. As someone who has visited the country, I can attest to that. So, I was naturally overjoyed when we were invited to review the most luxurious Turkish restaurant in Bahrain - Günaydin. Walking into the restaurant, you can’t help but admire its opulence with its high ceilings, emerald green and gold interiors, and stunning chandeliers. Glass displays filled with traditional Turkish salads, juicy cuts of meat and kebabs whet your appetite.

To begin our dining experience, we were served a kaleidoscope of fresh salads and mezzes. Of these, a truly addictive stand out was the Tulum Peynirli Salata, which beautifully combines fresh greens and cherry tomatoes with the sweetness of pomegranate and raisins, and the delightful crunch of walnuts. The Antep Patlican, which are dried eggplants stuffed with rice and meat, and Turkish kibbeh were delicious too.

While the starters are delicious, the crowning glory of Günaydin is their meats and the tableside presentation that comes with it. Our host expertly torched a massive beef rib which effortlessly fell off the bone, before sprinkling it with flakes of sea salt and chopping it up. This was followed by the fragrant Günaydin Spesiyal which are divine slices of beef tenderloin and luxurious oyster mushrooms in clarified butter. Every single morsel was succulent and memorable. The expertly cooked meat was melt-in-the-mouth tender and flavourful.

The Soslu which is a kebab wrapped in freshly made bread paired beautifully with the slightly sweet flavor of the tomato sauce and crunch of the pistachios. The Saslik, kebabs and other grilled meats were delicious too! We loved the fact that you’re encouraged to mix and match the pickles and dips with the meats served to experiment with flavours. Their deliciously cheesy Pide was the epitome of comfort food. The restaurant serves the very finest of meat;

so, if you’re feeling particularly adventurous, you can try out some of their raw dishes including Cig Kofte (a traditional Turkish dish), Beef Carpaccio or Steak Tartare.

To end our meal, our host put on yet another show, expertly slicing our desserts before sliding the platters onto the table. The Baklava is flown in from Turkey every week and truly tantalizes your taste buds. The buttery, yet light flaky phyllo dough is filled with generous helpings of ground pistachio and served with Turkey’s famous icecream. The warm pastry and ice cream is surprisingly light and serves as the perfect finish to our feast which we washed down with refreshing mocktails. After devouring countless dishes at the restaurant, I can tell you that the venue is very deserving of all the buzz it’s been getting.

Günaydin has all the factors that make a dining experience truly memorable: fresh ingredients, showmanship, ambience and rich flavours.

After a momentous year for the industry in which the green shoots of recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic bore fruit, 2023 promises to drive vehicular technology further forward. Kristian Harrison looks at the potential innovations and major releases set to excite motorists this year.

Electric Vehicles

Petrolheads can decry the downfall of the combustion engine all they like, but it’s simply impossible to escape the fact that electric vehicles are here to stay and, where manufacturers are concerned, the future. EVs are expected to make up a significant portion of new car sales by 2023, and here in Bahrain, plans are in place to install charging ports across the Kingdom in an effort to eliminate one of the main logistical obstacles to change.

Autonomous Driving

More companies are beginning to launch selfdriving cars. These machines are shown to be safer, cut downtime, reduce driver fatigue and prevent negligence-related accidents. They also improve fuel efficiency and reduce CO2 emissions. It is still early days with this technology and unlike EVs it isn’t going to become normality around Bahrain’s roads for a while but you can expect the mainstream market to start adopting them gradually.

Traditional Car Ownership

Traditional car ownership is in decline worldwide with a marked shift towards alternative ownership models such as ridehailing and car sharing, which is when two or more people use the same vehicle with shortterm access. Bahrain’s diminished public

transport options and cramped infrastructure means it’s unlikely we’re going to have trafficfree commutes anytime soon, but anything which reduces congestion and the carbon footprint is a positive.

Driving Experience

Perhaps the most visible change this year will be the cockpit experience. Horsepower and streamlined exterior aesthetics are taking a backseat to the interior and comfort of a car. Consumers use their smartphones to run their homes these days, and now cars are next in line. Demand starts with the obvious visual elements, such as bigger, more interactive displays on the dashboard or head-up displays on the vehicle glass for better safety and convenience.

In addition, manufacturers are able to offer a number of customisations from third-party services and 2023 is expected to see the emergence of on-demand subscription services for in-car features which can update wirelessly.

2023’s Big Releases

2023 promises to be a thrilling year for motoring enthusiasts with world-renowned marques releasing their latest flagship.

The biggest release of the year is arguably the most controversial too. Despite saying they

would never make an SUV, Ferrari will begin deliveries of the Purosangue. The magicians at Maranello could not avoid the lure of a fourdoor forever considering the overwhelming demands of the market, but the company’s significant reputation is at stake.

There continues to be heavy speculation about whether or not Tesla will actually ship the infamous Cybertruck to customers in 2023.

CEO Elon Musk has said that ‘mass production’ will begin late in the year and many recent reports seem to support that timeline, but as with anything he says these days, take it with a pinch of salt.

As mentioned earlier, electric vehicles play a big role in 2023. General Motors, for example, plans to begin production of the Cadillac Celestiq this year while the Chevrolet Blazer EV and the Silverado EV pickup truck are also making their debut.

It’s not all electrons and chargers for 2023 though. Ford’s brand new Mustang is also coming with good ol’ internal combustion engines to choose from. BMW, Hyundai, Alfa Romeo and Lexus are all bringing out new models this year, too.

BENTLEY’S ULTIMATE GRAND TOURER BEGINS REAL-WORLD TESTING

Two Bentley Baturs have begun real-world road trials across Europe. The first activity for one of the developments Batur’s – Car #0 – is an extensive 2,500-kilometre drive across Europe to simulate real world conditions.

The limited series of just 18 examples are due to begin deliveries mid-2023 after completion and signoff of an extensive engineering programme. All 18 Batur examples have already been reserved, including several by customers from the Middle East -Bentley’s most successful market anywhere in the world for bespoke vehicles.

More than 120 individual tests in all cover everything from the quality of the surface finish of the gold “organ stop” ventilation controls, to the new W12 engine hardware and software. Over 58 weeks of vehicle validation have been scheduled across the two pre-series cars, supplementing over 100 weeks of vehicle development already completed to validate

the increased engine power, making the Batur the most powerful Bentley in history – with at least 740 PS.

At the proving grounds, Batur Car #0 will begin seven weeks of durability work on handling tracks, mixed road conditions, high speed testing and abusive surface conditions. Once complete, another 7,500 kilometres of real-world driving will be undertaken before environmental testing commences. In just under four weeks the car will endure 600 hours of solar loading – equivalent to five years in an Arizona desert. This is particularly important for the new sustainable materials used in the exterior components, as an alternative to carbon fibre.

Kia has announced details of a new, ultra-exclusive Stinger Tribute Edition. Limited to just 1,000 examples worldwide, the Tribute Edition pays homage to Kia’s high-performance vision, and celebrates the Stinger sedan’s significant contribution to the brand since its introduction in 2017.

Building on the Stinger 3.3-litre twin-turbocharged V6 GT specification, the Stinger Tribute Edition elevates the striking sedan’s aesthetic appeal and sporting nature to a new level. In addition to the existing Ascot Green paint finish, customers are offered the choice of a new Moonscape matte gray paint hue. In Bahrain, scene of the final round of the 2022 FIA World Endurance Championship, PEUGEOT produced a video featuring Team Peugeot TotalEnergies driver Gustavo Menezes, using a stunt to present its new slogan, ‘Allure Born to Race’.

High above Bahrain International Circuit, the American parachuted out of a Bahrain Ministry of Interior Police Aviation helicopter before landing on the track and driving away in PEUGEOT’s 9X8 Hypercar. The operation allowed Menezes to indulge his two core passions – motorsport and skydiving. Are machines taking over?

At the end of November 2022, there was a remarkable change in the way we interact with machines. Something called ChatGPT surfaced officially. This Artificial Intelligence (AI) tool has the potential to provide answers that are factual, realistic, clear and precise – all in a conversational manner. The internet is flooded with people playing with the options available. Apparently, it can be the answer to research, to copywriting, and basically anything that requires research and interaction. When I read about it, it really did feel like “machines are taking over”. As always, this made me delve further and while it is an interesting development, “taking over” looks to be further away.

If, like me, you are new to technology, then you too may be a bit confused with the different terms like Machine Learning and AI; and, you

too may be wondering how is AI being used everywhere in everything – is it the answer to all business issues?

What is Artificial Intelligence?

AI is a broad branch of computer science that focuses on building smart machines capable of performing tasks that typically require human intelligence. It enables machines to simulate, and even improve upon, the capabilities of the human mind. Of the various elements of AI, machine learning and deep learning have seen significant developments.

What is Machine Learning?

Machine Learning is the machine’s ability to keep improving its performance without human intervention needed to explain the exact method to accomplish all the tasks it’s given. What makes this so phenomenal is that

the human mind is extremely complex and knows way more than it can tell. Simple tasks like explaining how we recognise faces is difficult to articulate by a person, let alone being able to transfer that knowledge to a machine.

A Quick Summary of Developments

The most significant strides have been in the areas of perception and cognition. Perception refers to technologies such as voice recognition by Siri, Alexa etc., text recognition and image recognition. Vision systems, such as those used in self-driving cars, formerly made a mistake when identifying a pedestrian as often as once in 30 frames (the cameras in these systems record about 30 frames a second); now they err less often than once in 30 million frames. Cognition systems are those that focus on problem solving such as systems to detect fraud, prevent money laundering etc.

There’s been a lot of mystery surrounding the use and role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in our day-to-day lives. Pria Masson demystifies the concept and answers a pressing question:

Perhaps the key change has been the way in which we work with machine systems. From coding machines to creating responses, machines are now able to learn from past situations and be responsive and predictive. This has been mostly through supervised learning systems i.e. in which the machine is given lots of examples of the correct answer to a particular problem. For example, JPMorgan Chase introduced a system for reviewing commercial loan contracts; work that used to take loan officers 360,000 hours can now be done in a few seconds. And supervised learning systems are now being used to diagnose skin cancer.

AI and the GCC

All the GCC governments have integrated AI into their national visions and strategic planning processes. As per a report by PWC, the potential impact of AI for the Middle East is expected to be USD320 billion, of which UAE is likely to see the highest relative gains at 14 percent of GDP and Saudi Arabia the highest absolute gains of USD135.2 billion. The region is expected to see 20-34 percent annual growth in the contribution of AI per year across the region. AI and Machine

Learning is driving applications across logistics, healthcare, fintech and even recruitment.

Are Machines Taking Over?

While it seems like machines can indeed do a lot of jobs, the drivers of those actions are still going to be visionary human resources. It may be likely that almost every area of our lives and work will use AI and Machine Learning. However, it’s unlikely that they will be able to take over what people can do. The difference between success and failure is likely to be how efficient a business knows how to use these tools. And yes, they are and are likely to remain tools and aids- guided by and subject to the capability of the person guiding that tool at its initial stage. Machines aren’t taking over, Chat GPT cannot replace jobs – they can’t think, they can only learn. That’s the difference.

GIB Launches Its 2022 Internship Programme

Gulf International Bank (GIB) B.S.C. launched its internship programme in Bahrain for new university graduates. The six-month programme aims to give participants valuable exposure and skills training in the financial services sector.

CEO of GIB, Jamal Al Kishi, said: “For the 2022 internship programme, we are partnering with BIBF to strengthen the experience for our interns and their access to world-class training even further. I am delighted that GIB is playing such a role in developing their skills for future leadership positions in the financial services sector.”

GIB Deputy Group Chief Human Resources Officer, Jamal Hejris, added: “As part of GIB’s commitment to talent development at all levels, we have created a multifaceted programme and approach to ensure interns get the most out of this experience. To maximise their learning, we are using a combination of classroom learning, digital learning and on the job training.”

This year’s programme started in November with a cohort of 11 graduates who upon successful completion of the programme will be ready for employment opportunities within the financial services sector.

TECHNICAL DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMME LAUNCHED BY IGA AND LABOUR MINISTRY

240 ICT graduates and job seekers will be trained over the course of three years through the Technical Development Programme which was launched by the Information & eGovernment Authority (iGA) in cooperation with the Ministry of Labour.

The participants, who are between the ages of 21 and 30, and are registered in the National Employment Programme with the Ministry of Labour, will be accepted into the programme in batches by the iGA. The Minister of Labour, HE Jameel bin Mohammed Ali Humaidan, stated that the programme is in line with the objective of the Economic Recovery Plan launched in 2021. The Ministry has nominated 100 graduates and job seekers who are registered with the Ministry’s employment programme, 80 of them will receive a year-long training as part of the first batch in the Technical Development Programme. The trainees will each receive a remuneration of BHD400 a month as financial support.

iGA Chief Executive, Mohammed Ali Al Qaed, affirmed the Authority’s support in developing the national skill set in the ICT field. “This initiative is in line with the Government’s set goals and launched strategies, including the Information & Telecommunications (ICT), and Digital Economy Strategy (2022-2026).”

The Technical Development Programme will involve upscaling the participants’ qualifications by obtaining internationally accredited Professional Certificates.

BPW BAHRAIN CELEBRATES MILESTONE

The Bahrain International Federation of Business and Professional Women (BPW Bahrain) commemorated its tenth-anniversary at its headquarters in Al Andalus Garden. The celebration was held as a part of the Creative Festival organised by BPW Bahrain, which drew more than 100 participants from Bahrain and Arab countries.

“Since its establishment, BPW Bahrain has supported local talents in a variety of sectors by providing them with business incubators and opportunities to appear and deploy locally and regionally, while simultaneously promoting Bahrain at regional and worldwide events and forums,” said President of BPW Bahrain, HE Sheikha Hind bint Salman Al Khalifa.

BPW Bahrain aims to expand and increase the number of beneficiaries of entrepreneurs emerging from their services by increasing the number of business incubators to 30 at its headquarters, as well as 20 incubators with a focus on the fields of fine arts, fashion, and jewellery design.

BAHRAIN RETAIL BANKING REVENUES EXPECTED TO GROW

Bahrain’s retail banking revenues are expected to grow at a Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 6.8 percent between 2021 to 2026, a rise from 3.6 percent from 2016 to 2021, while GCC economies (UAE, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Bahrain, and Qatar) expect to see an 8.8 percent CAGR within the same period to 2026, according to a new report by Boston Consulting Group (BCG).

The report, titled Global Retail Banking 2022: Sense and Sustainability, also reveals that one-quarter of retail banks surveyed globally report that ESG is a primary focus area for their digital transformation, and another 38 percent say that ESG is a key criterion in selecting and prioritising digital transformation initiatives.

“Sustainability is and will continue to act as a long-term differentiator across industries. Combined with ESG principles, sustainability can address a

greater number of stakeholders, expand on a green outreach and strengthen capabilities,” said Bhavya Kumar, BCG Managing Director & Partner. “The banking sector, in particular, can play a decisive role in driving ESG strategies, from catalysing sustainable markets to advancing broader targets under Bahrain’s Economic Vision 2030.”

In addition to ESG, through the five years from 2021 to 2026, payments, mortgages, and deposit products are likely to drive banking revenue growth in the GCC retail banking sector. An accelerated pace of digital payments and e-commerce adoption in the wake of COVID-19 will further benefit payment revenue growth.

STC BAHRAIN MAKES CRYPTOCURRENCY ADVANCEMENT

stc Bahrain has become the first telecom operator in the Kingdom to accept cryptocurrencies. The company has partnered with Eazy Financial Services, a leading Bahraini Payment Services provider specialising in POS and online payment gateway, which will allow stc customers to pay with cryptocurrencies using their Binance wallet.

stc Bahrain CEO Nezar Banabeela, said: “Rapid digitisation across the globe is transforming all aspects of our lives, and payments are the most crucial element. From online shopping and streaming videos to money transfers, almost every digital activity relies on a payment system.”

stc Bahrain customers can securely use Binance Pay to pay for products and services, in real-time with cryptocurrency, by scanning the QR from Eazy’s POS using their Binance App and paying with their preferred cryptocurrency.

Eazy Financial Services licensed by the Central Bank of Bahrain specialises in point-of-sale (POS) and online payment gateway acquiring solutions. The institution partnered with Binance in September to allow the acceptance of cryptocurrency payments using Binance Pay at over 5,000 of EazyPay’s POS Terminals and Online Payment gateaways across the Kingdom.

TRA Holds Cyber Drills for Operators in collaboration with Cyber Ranges

The Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of Bahrain (TRA) held a cyber security drill at Wyndham Grand, testing the operators’ ability to handle cyber threats. According to the Fifth Telecommunications Plan (NTP-5) published earlier this year, regular cyber drills will be conducted to assess the sector’s readiness to deal with cyber and physical threats, and to take into account risks exacerbated by new technologies.

As a regulator, the TRA is responsible to protect the interests of telecom subscribers and users. Such exercises enable the sector to practice procedures, test business continuity plans, enhance skills and knowledge, and strengthen preparedness.

Further, these exercises enable participants and observers to identify the gaps in the processes and procedures applied to handle incidents by verifying the extent of coordination and collaboration amongst Licensees. Ultimately, to ensure that the critical telecom infrastructure is resilient, thereby providing efficient services to end-users.

The event was held in collaboration with Cyber Ranges by Silensec, an international information security training and management firm and an official cyber range provider of the UN’s International Telecommunication Union (ITU).

The pitfalls and mistakes of appointing inappropriate consultants

Caveat Emptor. Some consulting companies will provide consultants who are temporarily appointed to facilitate full billing. A fill in consultant who may be just a space filler is common – it is like buying a donkey dressed up as a racehorse. Some individual consultants are like this as well – an expensive label on a cheap bottle. In almost every organisation I have been in, I have found the legacies of previous consultants – in cupboards full to the brim of often unrealistic, inappropriate, clumsily put together proposals and plans – none of which ever saw the light of day but were paid for in full - “A wonderful wardrobe of clothes presented most of which were out of fashion, out of season, too big, too small, wrong colour, wrong size or just plain bad.

Having worked with excellent high-performance CEOs, witnessing the way each one generates the necessary support from service resources is educational. CEOs do demonstrate some similar characteristics such as being demanding, having high expectations and of course commanding honesty, loyalty, respect, and reliability. What’s the story?

This Is What I Mean is the third studio album by English rapper Stormzy. The album was recorded on Osea Island in England during a series of music camps with a team of (according to Stormzy) “world class musicians and the best producers, writers and artists in the world” in a free atmosphere, where Stormzy prayed every morning during its creation. It was further described as an intimate love letter to music by Stormzy.

Worth a listen?

Stormzy’s second album, Heavy Is the Head, addressed his status as the leading figure in the grime revival as well as his position as one of Britain’s biggest pop stars, period. This Is What I Mean is his third full-length, and it’s a much more personal affair which seems unconcerned with producing chart hits or club anthems. The songs are more intimate and confessional than Stormzy’s past work, and he’s an artist who’s never been afraid to write from the heart or reflect his faith on his albums. None of the songs on This Is What I Mean can be categorised as grime. There’s no doubt that he put his heart and soul into making this record, but it’s hard to get excited about a Stormzy album dominated by ballads.

White Lung

Premonition

Rising out of a challenging yet transformative period, Canada’s White Lung deliver a defiant, and possibly final, fifth studio album Premonition. The band have emerged with a pummelling album rife with the group’s trademark punk catharsis and passionate feminist voice. The instruments’ dynamic, thrash metal-infused interplay remains vibrantly ear-splitting. Prior to the album’s release, White Lung announced they would be breaking up after Premonition, and if that does end up being the case, they’ve gone out with a magnificently gutsy farewell.

The Ruby Cord

British folk hero Richard Dawson makes music that often appears to have a strongly improvisational slant, yet a careful look at his work makes clear there’s a grand design behind it all. The Ruby Cord finds Dawson pondering the future and not feeling especially confident about it. While the narrative lines of the songs lean to the abstract, the album is set in a future time where society has fallen apart and humans exist in a state of augmented reality. It demands a certain patience from its listeners, but the superb embrace of dynamics and the interplay between his guitar and the instruments and massed voices around him build into something strikingly beautiful.

Though the rough edges of Moser’s might grate with some, the band has found the sweet spot where folk purity meets 21st century realities, and their lyrics, caught up in the mysteries of life, love, death, faith and the many joys and traumas that are the stuff of everyday life, feel deeper and more resonant in this context. The acoustic guitars and banjos walk hand in hand with strings, horns, and woodwinds, making use of a much wider palette of tonal colours, and they’ve done so with a keen eye toward dynamics.

The Journey to Wellness

Fatema Majdi is a yoga instructor, mobility specialist, personal trainer and functional strength trainer in Bahrain. By sharing her journey as a fitness professional, Fatema has grown to be one of the Kingdom’s most loved health and wellness influencers. This month, she spoke to Farah Baig about her thoughts on body positivity, the benefits of yoga and the need to have realistic fitness goals.

Ever since she was 14, Fatema dreamt of being an interior designer but life guided her down a very different path. “I had moved to India for a year during which I worked in Baroda, Gujarat for six months before backpacking through Manali, Rajasthan, Goa and New Delhi for another six months,” she reminisces.

“When it was time for me to leave, I found out that I was an illegal worker and ended up being stuck for over a month,” she adds.

Fatema had never thought of yoga as a profession until she taught two of her roommates who felt elated after the experience. “I felt the same way after my first lesson, so when I understood that I could make people feel just as good it clicked. Yoga made sense for me and taught me that I wasn’t working out for the right reasons before and eased my path to health and fitness,” she says.

Previously, she never saw herself as the one conducting lessons which she believes may be due to people being conditioned into thinking that trainers are meant to look a certain way.

“The second class I attended in India was actually conducted by a very old couple who didn’t have the typical yoga body but they were doing headstands and everything. I thought to myself, ‘Why isn’t this marketed to show that it is more inclusive than you think?’ because it is accessible to all body types,” she says.

“When I first started teaching, I was approached by diverse people with all body shapes, sizes and genders who were relieved that a body that they

didn't expect to do yoga, does yoga,” she adds. When it comes to the narrative surrounding body image, Fatema believes people wouldn’t be unkind to themselves if they understood factors, such as genetics, which can affect the way their body looks. “I was shocked at some of the interactions that my followers had with people who were close to them too. It’s 2023, do we still have to go through this?” she says. “Encouraging people to have a positive relationship with their body, and more self-awareness is very important to me.”

“I also believe the perception that if a person is thin they are healthy has to change. People that are half my weight can have an unhealthy lifestyle and not have the best bloodwork,” she adds.

Pursuing yoga or attending fitness classes can be stressful for some people, but having a trainer that you connect with can ease the process.

“People are often surprised by how much their body is capable of and how it can progress,” she says, adding that benefits of yoga include a better posture, better breathing and attention.

“You don’t have to be flexible to do yoga because that’s one of reasons we’re there – to improve flexibility. I believe that people should be open, be realistic, have attainable goals that are periodical and understand that we all have a starting point. You can dream big, but break it down into goals that are sustainable because any movement is good movement,” she concludes.

a Perfectionist When Your Child is

It’s a great thing when children set goals and standards for themselves, but what happens when your child is a perfectionist? This month, Ouiam El Hassani tells us about the different kinds of perfectionism and how we can best parent our perfectionist kids.

Does your child have impossibly high standards for themselves? Do they worry about disappointing their teacher, push themselves to the breaking point or internalise failure as something immovable within themselves? This impulse to make everything “right” is more common in kids than we might think.

As parents, we want to have high expectations for our kids, while also helping our children accept the imperfect and not be afraid to make mistakes. It is, after all, how we grow. However, for kids who have a tendency toward perfectionism—or who get angry when they make mistakes or feel frustrated when something isn’t correct, getting the message across that it’s okay to mess up sometimes can be tricky. But first, let’s understand what perfectionism in children looks like. Over the years, three types of perfectionism have been identified:

1. Internally Driven Perfectionism

This child’s perfectionism stems from their own expectations for themselves. They’re highly motivated and likely to get upset if there is even one mistake in their work.

2. Externally Driven Perfectionism

This child’s perfectionism is driven by external forces. They believe that their parents and/or teachers have extremely

high expectations for them. They are concerned that if they don’t do their best, then their parents will be disappointed in them.

3. Mixed Perfectionism

Children in this last category are a combination of the other two types. They are both hard on themselves and believe that their parents/teachers have high expectations for them.

Of course, having high expectations for a child isn’t inherently bad; however, when those expectations are tied to affection and warmth, the child comes to believe that their parents’ love hinges on their success. It raises the stakes for the child to the point that they link failure to irreversible damage to their relationship with their parents. Many children who are perfectionists are

likely to have perfectionist parents. If you see your own child picking up on your perfectionist tendencies, don’t be hard on yourself. It may be overwhelming to try to do everything “right” as a parent—but when you make a mistake, acknowledge it, learn from it and move on. Just as a child can pick up on negative traits, they can also pick up on positive strategies to mitigate them.

Perfectionism isn’t always a bad thing. Children who are perfectionists are most likely to be highly motivated, have strong problem-solving skills and have high selfefficacy, meaning that they tend to believe that they are likely to succeed when they confront an obstacle or task.

Parents of perfectionist kids have a big role in helping their children. These few steps can reap great results:

1- Be mindful of how you react to your child’s mistakes.

Do you signal your disappointment in your body language or in what you say to them? To help them approach difficult problems the best thing to do is reminding them that you’re there to support them.

2- Pay attention to how you praise your child.

Specific, process-oriented praise reminds children that mistakes are an opportunity to learn, rather than a sign of failure. When a child works on a puzzle, instead of saying, “You’re so smart,” try saying, “I love how you tried so many different combinations of pieces!” Not only is this much more specific, it also refers to the process of problem-solving. Praising intelligence, on the other hand, can lead children to believe that their success hinges on a trait. When they eventually fail (and they will, for sure!), their failure will threaten their view of themselves as smart. They’ll be less likely to take on challenges and less likely to persevere when a task is difficult.

THIRTY-EIGHT IS A STRANGE NUMBER

Farrah Saville opens up about turning the weird 3-8 while living as an expat.

I’ve just hit the triple whammy; I have turned 38, my child is now a fully-fledged toddler and I have moved countries.

Thirty-eight is weird. You see, when you are in your teens, and rollicking twenties you think by 38, and at least by motherhood you would have life figured out but here I am, still figuring things out.

Thirty-eight is a weird number because you aren’t quite in your forties but you are definitely no longer 30 and flirty. Society tells us that by a certain age you need to have certain things ticked off “the list”- two kids, a white-picket fence, and a dog named ‘Fluffy’ at certain intervals in life - but the reality is far different.

I did not think that at 38 I would be making new friends or evaluating old friendships and this is not quite the same as when you establish your trusted circle during your formative years. Partying, clubbing and going

out to eat during the week isn’t always a viable option with a three-year-old so making friends and meeting new people might be a little tougher.

The obvious thing is to make friends with other moms but moms are not just one big group of people lumped together and having children doesn’t automatically equate similar interests. Also, you seek quality over quantity because time is a big factor, which brings me to my next point.

In another aspect the number thirty-eight is strange because it’ll make you question how you intend on living your life in the years to come. Up until a certain point you think “you have time” and that you can put off many things to the next day, the next week or the next year but as you see 40 on the horizon you begin to truly question how much you can put off and how to prioritise the moment while still planning for the years ahead. this is only

exacerbated by being “settled” as an expat.

More significantly, by 38, I really thought I would have figured out the routine aspects of life and be one of those 5am risers who works out religiously, drinks my eight glasses of water a day and has a shot of wheat grass before heading to work energised, and recharged. I am still waiting for the day when I wake up smiling instead of groaning and rolling over as my alarm buzzes away. I am still figuring out a routine that works for me.

And while all this may sound like whining and moaning, believe me it’s not. What I am realising about 38 is that while it may be weird it is also a wonderful number, one that allows you to dissect, analyse and change. Mostly, it’s a chance to start again and again while figuring out what works for you and how to make it work for you.

Which musicians would we find on your playlist?

My playlist is pretty diverse, but at the moment I’ve been listening to a lot of Jacob Banks’ songs.

Name three things you never leave the house without. My phone (of course), a water bottle, and my wallet.

What’s your dream holiday destination?

Ireland is right at the top of my long list.

I love to read, and I love to play billiards.

How would you describe yourself?

I would describe myself as resilient and caring, and a little stubborn.

If you could have a superpower, what would it be?

Hands down, teleportation. To be able to go anywhere at the snap of your fingers is the dream. Telekinesis would be pretty fun too.

What do you believe is life’s greatest lesson to you?

I think the greatest lesson I’ve learned is that everything, the good and the bad, happens for a reason. It’s a hard to pill to swallow sometimes, especially because you don’t always know the reason – but I truly believe that there’s always a reason for whatever life throws at you.

What’s your favourite childhood memory?

My family and I once went to a fair that had games, activities and entertainment. It was one of those great family days that you don’t forget.

A movie you don’t mind seeing on repeat is…

I have a long list of those, but my top two are The Dark Knight and 10 Things I Hate About You.
