You can make the most of July with our curated happenings listing, which features exciting parties, workshops, and even summer camps. You can find even more events on our website bahrainthismonth.com.

The United States of America and the Kingdom of Bahrain have close relations which span well over a century. To mark the 4th of July, we proudly present our special USA in Bahrain supplement, which highlights key collaborators across various sectors including healthcare, education, motoring, and FMCG. As part of the feature, we also had the pleasure of interviewing US Ambassador, HE Steven C. In our interview section, we speak to The K Hotel's General Manager, Hussain Al Samahiji, about his philosophy and the hotel's next chapter. We also introduce Gulf Hotel Bahrain's new Executive Chef Picco Alapatt, who talks about being at the helm of the hotel's culinary operations.

In our dining section this month, we highlight the best of brunches, national feasts, and monthly specials at the very finest of Bahrain's hotels. Maki Restaurant, renowned for their fusion Japanese cuisine, re-opened after extensive renovation unveiling their new Wabi-sabi concept. We also put Ric's Country Kitchen to the taste test following their recent changes.

Our motoring section takes things up a gear this month with several car launches and motoring announcements. We were also invited to drive the new Mercedes electric vehicles during a special EQ Roadshow and discovered just why the famous marque is ready to Charge Your Future.

In Woman This Month, we interview Philippines Ambassador, HE Anne Jalando-On Louis, who has a prolific diplomatic career and is now making her ambassadorial debut in the Kingdom. She highlights the state of bilateral relations between the two countries. Our other interviewee is the brilliant Yasmin Dickinson, a British-Bahraini scientist in STEM known online as ‘The Cardiac Scientist’. She gives us some insight into the life of a scientist and talks about her recent science policy internship in the UK. With temperatures rising, our team brings you the best of summer fashion and beauty essentials to beat the heat. Ouiam El Hassani also talks about making playtime more beneficial for your kids while Eman Deabil speaks about the new role of Chief Sustainability Officers. LEADING AT THE HELM

The K Hotel has established itself as one of the trendiest four-star deluxe hotels in the Kingdom with Bahraini general manager Hussain Al Samahiji at the helm. He tells Kristian Harrison about his philosophy and the hotel’s next chapter.

After more than four years in the top seat, Mr Al Samahiji has guided the K Hotel through its most difficult period with an expert hand. It was a labour of love for the man with the incredible 25-year career, who began in a junior position in the food and beverage department in 1998.

The K Hotel is where he started his hospitality management career in earnest, and where he has remained for the past 10 years. He started out by spending two years as director of sales and marketing back in 2013. He was soon promoted to executive assistant manager after completing the General Managers Programme at Cornell University in 2015. In 2017 he was appointed as the general manager of one of the leading four-star hotels in the Kingdom, operated by the Gulf Hotels Group.

Asked what drives him in the hospitality industry, Mr Al Samahiji explains: “Of course, I was attracted by the luxury and etiquette. But,

more importantly, it allows you to meet anyone at any level. I am a sociable kind of guy and I enjoy building strong relationships with our guests and our associates.”

His relationship with his group of staff remains stronger than ever, emphasised by the fact that the K Hotel managed to successfully negotiate the pandemic, an extremely challenging period for the industry, without losing any staff or delaying of salary payments thanks to an effective pro-active plan.

He says: “I was brought up to believe that nothing is impossible if you have a vision and you fight to get it. You need always to think positive and don’t listen to people who are not prepared to grow. There are always challenges but you can overcome them. I have full trust in my team and I believe they trust me too, my door is always open and I think the culture of mutual loyalty which we have nurtured at the K Hotel is one of the main reasons behind its success.”

The K Hotel’s popularity is undoubtedly due to its trendy décor. Mr Al Samahiji’s proudest improvement in his four-year tenure is the relaunch of both the K Lounge as a modern, ambient setting with a plethora of books,

games and artworks to create a chilled vibe, and the K Tracks Lounge on the first floor which caters to sport and live entertainment fans. The hotel’s extensive food and beverage options are also attractive; this year saw the hotel host a Ramadan Tent for the first time, which was a huge success, while its KOLORS restaurant is a popular spot particularly for weekly brunches.

Furthermore, the hotel has erected a giant LED screen on the building which has become a popular landmark in bustling Juffair, a leading innovation which other outlets are keen to emulate.

As for the future, he says: “The K Hotel has an excellent name in the market, and I want to continue to develop that. I will also continue to maintain our top key accounts and corporate clients ensuring our loyal customers receive the service they deserve. We are also extremely proud of our monthly corporate social responsibility programmes which we will continue to push.

“I also want to extend my sincerest thanks to the K Hotel team, owners, board members and also the wider Gulf Hotels Group, for the support they’ve shown me which allows me to operate as I do.

“There’s a lot to look forward to in the future and I am excited for the challenges it will bring. I’m a proud Bahraini in a Bahraini company, and I want to set an example to young locals who want to get into the hospitality industry. There are big opportunities out there if you are willing to do the work necessary to get the job done, even when it lies outside your normal range. The best way to motivate hotel staff members is to be a manager who leads by example.”

Presenting Gastronomical Greatness!

The Gulf Hotel Bahrain is one of the Kingdom’s most prominent hospitality destinations. With a total of 17 outlets on its premises, an experienced hand is needed at the helm to ensure the operation runs butterysmooth. Luckily, the hotel’s new Executive Chef, Picco Alapatt, is the perfect man for the job, and Bahrain This Month sat down with him to find out why.

With 23 years of experience in the culinary industry, Chef Picco’s influences are spread across the continents. Originally from Kerala, India, a degree in Hotel Management and Catering Science and a Master’s in Business Administration was the gateway to a journey which included Dubai, Kenya, and Saint Kitts and Nevis in the Caribbean.

Now, he’s back in the Kingdom for a third stint after previous tenures at the Ritz-Carlton, Bahrain and the Royal Golf Club. Fresh off the back of winning ‘MENA Executive Chef of the Year,’ his latest position is his greatest challenge yet.

“From my previous posting in Dubai, I knew some of the management team in Bahrain and what their beliefs are,” he explains. “I firmly stand by the philosophy of ‘don’t choose the location, choose the team,’ and so when the opportunity came to join them in Bahrain, it was an easy decision.

“I need a place where I wake up happy to go to work, and I have that here. Bahrain is a beautiful place and the hotel itself is a monster! There’s a lot of things happening; when it comes to food and beverage operations, I don’t think there’s many hotels in the region which can do what we do with the number of outlets we have.

“Not only that, but 10 of them are awardwinning in their own right and have their own native head chefs handling the restaurant, which is extremely rare but also ensures I get the best possible feedback.”

Chef Picco prefers a hands-on style of management, hosting daily meetings with his team and can be regularly seen front-of-house, engaging with staff and customers alike to carefully curate menus together.

One of his key initiatives is to give new introductions to the menu at least six months, with a belief that certain options and concepts take time to spread by word of mouth, or be

tweaked and upgraded as need be rather than pulled too quickly if it isn’t selling.

As for his culinary philosophy, Chef Picco sums it up succinctly. “I truly believe that good food brings peace and ultimate happiness,” he argues. “I always like a simple approach to food, when it comes to cooking and getting my ingredients together. There is always room for creativity, but I still believe in presenting something people can connect to.

“The creativity comes more with the presentation. With the current social media generation, people eat with their eyes first! It’s rare now to see a guest actually eat their food when their food is put down in front of them without taking a picture first.

“Ultimately, I am excited to put together my simple yet creative approach to food, offering our guests a good excuse to mingle at the table and relish a unique dining experience,” he concludes.

A Cultural Showcase

During a visit to the Kingdom to showcase their talents, Arab-Israeli chef Elias Mattar and dance choreographer

Shlomi Elimelech sat down with Kristian Harrison to discuss their excitement at the opportunity to perform in Bahrain.

Elias is the owner of Marta Deli, located in the northern Israeli port of Haifa, one of the most active delis in a city bustling with activities. It regularly has a vibrant atmosphere filled with music and excitement and every Friday it comes alive with live music, creating an ambience of joy.

He is renowned as one of the most famous chefs in Israel and was asked to come to Bahrain to represent Israeli cuisine, showcasing diverse flavours from different regions of the country. Whether it's the northern, western or eastern side, each has its own famous dishes and spices, all of which Chef Elias represents with his unique touch. He explained: “It is my second time in Bahrain and I am very glad of the opportunity to represent my country here. It’s an honour to showcase some of my favourite fusions from Israel and a

selection of cold cut meats, sliced cheeses, sandwiches, breads, salads and more.

“I’ve brought some of my favourite spices from Israel from a number of regions and I really hope that the people of Bahrain enjoy my creations. Bahrain has a wonderful culinary tradition and I’m proud to contribute to it.”

Shlomi is the director and choreographer of the dance group Tzuza, which was founded in 2006. Tzuza is a prominent name in the Israeli dance world, with more than 1,000 dancers of different ages on its books.

The group performed a special show featuring 12 dancers with a stylistic video-art presentation, showcasing the history of the nation. The performance wowed onlookers in Bahrain with its stunning elements of dance, acrobatics and performing arts.

The group participates in various productions carried out in collaboration with numerous social organisations and has now ticked Bahrain off in the list of countries it has brought joy to. Tzuza has performed at festivals and

celebration in countries including the United States, South Korea, Mexico, Czech Republic, Germany, Spain, Brazil and many others over recent years.

Shlomi was thrilled to bring the group’s amazing talent to the Kingdom. He says excitedly: “It’s an exciting experience to come to Bahrain with its history and the history of the region. The culture is unique and so we really had to do something special and pull out all the stops compared to performing somewhere like London.

“The show is fully curated for where we are performing; every show is different. For example, here we used elements of Bahraini music, outfits and history. Israeli culture is actually very similar, especially when it comes to music, so I took local elements such as drums and the oud and crafted something which has foundations in both countries.

“Our dancers are amazing and they have had a special buzz about performing in Bahrain for a long time. They’ve been working so diligently for months to be ready for the opportunity to perform in a country which very few of their peers have had the chance to visit is very special for them.

“In art, it doesn’t matter where the show is coming from, but rather if people like it or not. The purpose of the show was to bring people together and regardless of where they are from and appreciate the wonderful spirit of dance,” he concludes.

STRENGTHENING SHARED VALUES

In his second year as US Ambassador to the Kingdom of Bahrain, His Excellency Steven C. Bondy speaks to Kristian Harrison about his objectives as ambassador, his experiences on the island and the cooperation between the two countries with regards to regional maritime security, trade and more.

USA in Bahrain Bahrainthismonth.com 28 July 2023

Your Excellency, can you give us a brief summary of your career to date?

I have had the wonderful opportunity to serve as a diplomat for the United States for 32 years now. I thought when I joined, I’d see the world, but in fact I’ve just seen a narrow swathe which is the Middle East. I was previously in Bahrain from 2004-2007 so it was a wonderful opportunity to come back to the Kingdom, a place where I feel like I know the people and culture well. I have also served elsewhere in the Gulf in places including the UAE, Turkey, Jordan, Egypt, Iraq and Afghanistan. I also worked on issues on the Middle East in Washington.

You’re now in your second full year in Bahrain, in what ways is your job different now compared to when you first arrived?

First and foremost, I arrived in early February 2022 when the pandemic was still on, which was hard for diplomats. As our Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, said: “Diplomacy is a contact sport.” You have to meet people, shake hands and look one another in the eye to work out issues. Thankfully, due to Bahrain’s effective handling of the pandemic, we emerged out of that soon after which allowed citizens of Bahrain to see each other again. From a substantive point of view, also in February last year Russia invaded Ukraine which changed how the US works with Bahrain and other nations to push back on the unfair, unjust invasion of a peaceful nation.

Following this, have your mission and goals shifted at all based on current events? What are the current main objectives of your ambassadorship?

Firstly, my job is to build upon the very solid foundation of relations between the governments and people of the United States and Bahrain. We can go back 130 years when US citizens first came to Bahrain as missionaries who formed a hospital, school and church, all of which are incredibly still operating today. We’re proud of that legacy and the contributions still going on. We have this great depth of common understanding, of values that Bahrain and Americans share. It’s my job to build on that relationship, to make it ever stronger which we do in key areas such as the strategic realm where our military relationship deters our adversaries. The US is also working very hard to build Bahrain’s relationship with Israel through the Abraham Accords. Finally, we also have the commercial side and what I like to call the ‘values aspect’ of our foreign policy; human rights, civil society, democratic development, religious freedom and more.

What have been your key observations of Bahrain now that you’ve had time to truly experience the country and its culture?

Bahrain has grown substantially; in terms of population, infrastructure and also literally because of the land reclamation programme! The Kingdom is central to the regional

economy and the focus on education and training skills so that Bahrainis can thrive in the global economy is something that’s new for me. It’s a focused and practical exercise to ensure that the next generation is ready to thrive economically, which is extremely wise. Of course, the kindness and spirit of the people hasn’t changed. Bahrain has been open to the world for thousands of years and that shines through. Friends, family and colleagues are all welcomed. I also admire how Bahrainis are willing to work hard which is not the case all over the world.

What experiences in Bahrain, whether positive or challenging, have led to you becoming a better ambassador?

Every day there are new challenges, surprises and more. I would say that the key thing for me is that I try to develop my leadership skills so that we as an embassy can make progress and achieve objectives. Leadership is an art not a science, you can’t go through a checklist but instead have to create an environment. This is both the greatest challenge and also the most satisfying aspect of what we do. Communication and empowering the staff to use their creativity, alongside monitoring our approach, is so important. I feel the need for prudent risk-taking; we have to look for opportunities to always do better. I like to compare it with snow skiing; if you’re doing it all day and don’t fall, you’re probably not pushing yourself. Similarly, in diplomacy we need to take risks to achieve objectives.

How important is the US-Bahrain relationship when it comes to the maritime environment and protecting the US’ interests and safety in the Middle East?

Our defence relationship is fundamental. Our first military deployment in the Gulf region was right here in 1947 when we launched our enduring presence, which still exists to this day. Maritime security is not just important to us but for the world, as a huge supply of the world’s energy comes through the Arabian Gulf and out into the economies of the world. Being able to project power to ensure commerce and trade continue unhindered with free movement of commercial vessels is an important aspect of prosperity and growth in the global economy. Our military relationship is blossoming. Bahrain recently became the first customer of our F-16 Block 70 aircraft, and the first one rolled off assembly a couple of months ago. This opens up a whole new area of military interoperability and all of us here at the embassy and the 8,000 strong military members work tirelessly with our Bahraini counterparts to achieve our common objectives.

How does the US support the members of the US military in Bahrain?

There is a whole suite of options available to our service members and their families, here, from mental health to physical health and

also spiritual health. For example, we have a Chaplain Corps on base who provide pastoral and religious guidance to our team. We also provide the Bahrain School for children of our service members, following the American curriculum, and we are proud that many of Bahrain’s leaders including HRH Prince Salman bin Hamad al Khalifa, Crown Prince and Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Bahrain, are graduates.

What is the current state of trade relations between the US and Bahrain? Do you have any specific figures?

The commercial relationship is thriving. In 2022, the bilateral trade volume was USD2.85 billion, which is the second highest on record behind only 2018. We also noticed that Bahrain had a trade surplus with the United States meaning it was exporting more goods to the US than the other way. My job as an ambassador is to boost the export of US goods and services, and we have a free trade agreement in place to pursue that. What is a certainty is that commercially, we have more interactions, innovations and opportunities because of our relationship.

The Export-Import Bank, a US government function that provides trade financing to export goods and services, is one of the ways in which we can support American exports into Bahrain.

Secondly, we are working very carefully on resuming direct flights between the two countries with Gulf Air. The logistics are being ironed out, but when that happens, tourism, education, business and medical travel will increase tremendously.

Finally, we are working closely with the Bahrain government on the United States Trade Zone, which provides a specific location for US companies to set up to do light manufacturing and logistics to pursue opportunities throughout the region.

Anything else to add?

I just want to reiterate that it’s an incredible honour to represent the government and people of the US here in Bahrain. The depth of the relationship is hard to fathom; we have common objectives and tend to see things in the same way. That doesn’t mean we don’t have disagreements, as even brothers fight! However, when we do disagree, we do so unemotionally and with great respect and appreciation for the other’s point of view. There’s nothing I’d rather be doing than what I am right here, right now.

Best Food Forward!

Nass Foods, a branch of Nass Corporation B.S.C., has been providing Bahrain with some of the most recognised American food brands from the USA since it was established in 1982. Operating as an importer, wholesaler, retailer and supplier of premium quality frozen, chilled and dry food, Nass Foods is a sign of quality.

Over the past 41 years, Nass Foods has been one of the preferred food supplychain companies in the region, a trusted leader in the supply of specialised meat products to top hotels and caterers, supermarkets and hypermarkets in the Kingdom. Through Nass Foods, a number of American food brands including Midamar and Butterball, an essential during the festive season, have graced the island! When the weather amps up in summer, international premium brands of ice creams like Oreo, Kitkat, Cadbury, Nestle, Toblerone, Daim and Del Monte are all distributed by the company too. However, Nass Foods’ premium meat products are its specialty. Its main imports are from the USA, but also from countries such as New Zealand, Brazil, Netherlands and Australia. Succulent steaks, backyard BBQ options and tender roasts are all available by order on the Nass Foods app.

To meet demand, the company has a massive storage capacity, which includes freezers, chillers and dry stores, and a distribution system that covers seven days a week. It comprises a fleet of freezer vans, trucks, mini buses and vans. Its wholesale outlets in Manama and Hamad Town cater to the wholesale needs of Bahrainis’ growing food requirements.

Of course, Nass Foods’ operations could not exist without suppliers and the company continues to explore carefullyselected partnerships in a number of countries as it aims to maintain its reputation as one of the GCC’s most important importers and distributors. One of the main American suppliers is the American Foods Group, a family-owned business based in the Midwest of the US. The partnership between Nass Foods and AFG typifies the quality and care needed to ensure that Bahrain receives the finest imports. All beef provided by AFG comes from North American cattle raised on rural ranches and feed yards, and most importantly, is all Halal certified.

American Mission Hospital: Pioneers in Healthcare

His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, addressing Bahrain’s American expatriate community in April 2018, said: “Over a century ago, an intrepid young American named Samuel Zwemer travelled from New Jersey to Arabia with a noble mission in his heart. The medical dispensary he opened in Manama became a hospital that has saved countless lives.

“This hospital is a testament to the American generosity of spirit – and a reminder of what we have in common. Here, in Bahrain, we have a hospital founded by a Christian mission, alongside mosques and churches, synagogues and temples.

“In the USA, people of all faiths come to live the American Dream. We may be different nations, but we are united by this proud tradition of tolerance. Together, we share the dream of a world where we can all live alongside each other in peace and prosperity.”

These words of HM King Hamad, on Samuel Zwemer, the founder of American Mission Hospital, are indicative of the early US relations with Bahrain, which have only grown from strength to strength over the decades.

After arriving in Bahrain on December 7, 1892, Samuel Zwemer set up a dispensary to which people came for medicines, medical treatments, and minor surgeries. His clinic was located in the souq near the renowned Bab Al Bahrain area. The Bab Al Bahrain arch itself, however, was not built until almost 60 years later, in 1949.

In 1896, on a visit to Baghdad, Zwemer met Amy Wilkes, an Australian missionary nurse at a hospital. The fact that she was a registered nurse trained in Sydney and serving in Mesopotamia, must have made him consider

her as an ideal companion for life. So, they married at the British Consulate there.

Once back in Bahrain, the couple ran the medical dispensary and conducted minor surgeries. But they kept writing to the ‘Arabian Mission’, headquartered in New York, that Bahrain needed a full-fledged hospital.

So, in 1900, with the coming of a doctorcouple Dr. Sharon J Thoms and Dr. Marion Wells Thoms, who were medical graduates from Michigan State University, and now Bahrain’s first modern physicians, the formal healthcare movement in Bahrain started.

Thanks to the permission of the then Hakim of Bahrain, Shaikh

Isa bin Ali Al Khalifa, a piece of land was purchased in Manama, and the Mason Memorial Hospital was built and opened on January 26, 1903. Over time, however, it became known as the American Mission Hospital.

Soon, Zwemer’s persuasive skills, through his prolific writing and through his preaching, which he did during his US tours in early 1900s, motivated many doctors, nurses, paramedics and teachers to join the mission.

Both Dr. Sharon J Thoms and Dr. Stanley Mylrea, who served in Bahrain in 1910s, went on to set up the American Mission Hospitals in Muscat and Kuwait respectively. Dr. Paul Harrison and Dr. Louis P Dame used to visit Riyadh, to treat the family of Ibn Saud – who later became the first king of Saudi Arabia – and thousands of patients in Nejd, Arabia.

Dr. Harold Storm used to visit Qatar and the Trucial States (which became UAE, later) to serve the people in those regions. Until after the oil boom in 1940s, when the local governments were able to set up government healthcare facilities, it was, in fact, the American Mission Hospitals that offered modern healthcare.

On 26 January 2023, exactly 120 years after the first hospital in the region opened, the new King Hamad American Mission Hospital opened in Bahrain, making it the fifth and the largest of the facilities of the American Mission Hospital in Bahrain.

Modern healthcare, of over 130 years, is but just one of the many sectors which bring the two nations, US and Bahrain, together.

The American doctor-couple, graduates from the University of Michigan, arrived in Bahrain in 1900.

With Samuel Zwemer, who had been here since 1892, these first modern physicians of Bahrain led the construction of GCC’s first hospital, the Mason Memorial Hospital. It opened on 26 January 1903.

Magnificent Maki

Maki Bahrain, located at the Bahrain World Trade Centre, has long been known for its phenomenal fusion Japanese cuisine. Farah Baig revisits Maki following the exciting unveiling of its new Wabi-sabi concept which comes with fresh interiors and exciting new culinary additions.

One can say with ease that Maki is one of the very best restaurants in the Kingdom making it a much-loved dining venue for visitors and residents alike. Over the years, this culinary destination has perfected and reinvigorated its menu to make every experience truly memorable. So, when I heard of Maki’s reopening following an extensive renovation, I was beyond enthused to revisit what is one of my favourite restaurants, whether night or day. In my eyes, Maki had already achieved perfection when it comes to its ambiance, menu and service; was it possible to raise the bar even higher?

Walking into Maki early one evening I was thrilled to explore its new interiors inspired by the Japanese philosophy of Wabi-sabi. To explain, Wabi-sabi is the view or thought of finding beauty in every aspect of imperfection in nature. It is about the aesthetic of things in existence, that are imperfect, impermanent, and incomplete. With the concept in mind, the restaurant has taken on a new, refreshing identity that is bright and airy reflecting an authentic and organic feel. These elements are seen across both floors with light wooden details, warm lighting and even a stunning bronze ceiling upstairs. The interiors are undeniably welcoming.

dining Bahrainthismonth.com 44 July 2023

The restaurant offers several seating options which are ideal whether you’re popping in for a quick business lunch or intend to savour each bite at leisure over dinner with family and friends.

AND NOW WE FEAST

We opted for a table close to the main entrance with our palates ready for a treat.

To begin the experience, we were served the Chaine Haze Forest Salad which is artistically assembled. A careful balance of ingredients is meticulously assembled in a glass bowl, smoked and then topped with a delicate, yet flavourful Ooba dressing made in-house. Red quinoa, carrots, coriander, carrots, avocado, truffle and cherry tomato come together to create a balance of flavours that is absolutely sensational: sweet, tangy and smoky with some light earthiness from the mushrooms. What a delight.

Next, we were presented with the Omakase Sushi – a platter of seven distinct sushis that is truly a treat for the eyes. This platter is distinct for the fact that it allows the sushi chef to be as playful with the ingredients as possible. The very best of seafood was presented and paired with fine shavings of vegetables and herbs. These were then topped with flavourful dollops of sauce, sesame seeds, spice powders and even delicate edible flowers – a culinary kaleidoscope that takes you on a journey of textures and flavours.

As the name suggests, Maki is also known for its wide range of maki that is playful, creative and - simply put – delicious. Hend Magic Maki is a new menu item which follows the Wabi-sabi concept. Crabsticks and avocado are wrapped in a unique olive wrap before being topped with prawn tempura bites and being drizzled with maki maki and spicy sauce. The olive wrap, which features the regional favourite zaatar, gives this maki a rich and sharp flavour that makes you want to have much more!

The delectable Tsurai Shake Sashimi was next and was divine. The salmon and avocado are thinly sliced and practically melts in your mouth. Showcasing the chefs’ ability to combine culinary techniques, the platter is dotted with carefully crafted black truffle pearls, spicy togaroshi powder and a fresh squeeze of lime which add a burst of flavour that is hot, citrusy and creamy all at once. It’s a truly addictive Maki-style sashimi!

Moving on to a hot dish, we enjoyed a classic Japanese favourite –Prawn Teppan. What makes Maki’s take on it special is its attention to serving only the very best of ingredients. This dish in particular had crisp, buttery vegetables and very large prawns that were perfectly grilled for the right texture.

Finishing on a sweet note we enjoyed the silky-smooth goodness of the Donostia Cheesecake. This wasn’t before they poured a thick chocolate sauce over it though. With the sliced fresh strawberries, it was far superior to any cheesecake I have ever had.

Taking in Maki’s new look while savouring creative additions and Maki classics made it a night to remember. The experience, as always was memorable, and proved that Maki is always able to raise the bar higher with its inspired and imaginative flavours and vision.

Taste of America!

Ric’s Country Kitchen has been an institution in Bahrain since 2001, serving up hearty portions to hungry diners eager for a homemade American food fix. Now under new management, Kristian Harrison checked out the restaurant to put it to the taste test.

Everyone has a story to tell about Ric’s. Many a good night (and morning – those breakfasts!) have been spent within the walls of its converted villa – an iconic outlet nestled in a corner of Juffair.

My last trip there was pre-Covid, and unfortunately since then the original owner Rick Abernathy has passed away. After a rocky period, new management took over the operation just a few months ago, and the friendly team were more than happy to invite us to try out their new Ric’s and gave us a Great American Welcome.

The restaurant’s interior is definitely cosier than I remember, with eclectic décor encompassing everything from US state flags, pottery ware, old photographs of famous guests and Native American artwork.

Ric’s menu is classic diner fare, with huge American, British and Tex-Mex breakfasts, burgers, soups, sandwiches, hot dogs and steaks.

To ease myself in for the feast to come, I started off with a Tomato Soup with Garlic Bread, and was immediately impressed with the creaminess of the soup but also its tangy, slightly spicy taste. I also tucked into the Chicken Caesar Salad and was pleased to see that the chef had been extremely generous with the chicken, croutons and dressing rather than just piling it with lettuce.

After that it was time to get stuck into meatier fare and the Smoked Chicken Wings did not disappoint; tender on their own but even nicer when dipped in the accompanying garlic dip. However, I must say they were outshone by the Dynamite Chicken which was simply phenomenal, with the perfectly-crisped chicken elevated by the sweet-yet-spicy sauce.

All of this great food was making me thirsty, so I plumped for one of the many mocktails on offer, a Pineapple and Chilli Mojito (a little spicier than I was expecting!).

Next were the Nachos which were loaded with plentiful beef, refried beans, chilli, jalapenos, tomatoes and melted cheese. I appreciated the

fact that the tortilla chips were crunchy freshly-made rather than out of a packet or slightly stale.

When the mains arrived, I first tried the BBQ Sandwich, which was packed with filling and textured well with the smoky BBQ sauce, although I think BBQ beans would have perhaps complemented it better than the Pinto Beans I tried. Luckily, the Coleslaw was up to scratch.

The centrepiece of the evening was the Rib Eye Steak, a 12oz beauty served with mashed potato, vegetables and Texas toast. Choosing medium-rare for the steak, I was pleased to see the chef get that particular balance right and not be either too tough or undercooked. There was also very little fat on the cut so I could enjoy the meaty goodness to the full, while the mushroom sauce accentuated the flavour.

After a short break and a palate cleanser, I had just the tiniest sliver of room for dessert. The Apple Pie was phenomenal, with the thick wedge emphasising no corners were cut on either the pastry or the filling. I also appreciated the dollop of vanilla ice cream on top to ease it down.

Overall, I was immensely satisfied with my visit and it is great to see Ric’s back on its feet again with great food to match its welcoming vibe. Here’s to many more memories!

THE ROAD TO ELECTRIC!

Electric cars are the inevitable next step in the journey to a greener planet, and Mercedes-Benz is leading the way with a suite of EVs ready and raring to go on Bahrain’s roads. Kristian Harrison was invited to drive them during a special EQ Roadshow and discovered just why the famous marque is ready to Charge Your Future.

Lined up outside the Al Haddad Motors Showroom in Tubli were four beautiful specimens ready to be put through their paces on a swelteringly hot day in the Kingdom. The EQA, EQB, EQS and EQS SUV, all electric vehicles each with their own identity and quirks, were fully charged and ready.

First up for me was the EQA, which is positioned as the new entry-level model to the all-electric world of Mercedes EQ vehicles. The contrast between the sleek white body and the black panel radiator grille with central star (a hallmark of the electric range), coupled with the distinctive continuous light strip at front and rear shows brings a futuristic look.

This was the perfect vehicle to ease me in for the day of driving ahead, and although we were following the ever-friendly Al Haddad team at the front of the queue, I still managed to get to grips with the handy Navigation with Electric Intelligence feature. This calculates the fastest route to the given destination, making allowance for any necessary charging stops as well as reacting dynamically to changes in

factors such as topography, traffic and the weather.

After a brief stop, it was my turn in the EQS SUV. What a monster this was, with a 56-inch MBUX Hyperscreen that made me feel like I was at the helm of the Starship Enterprise than a car on Planet Earth.

This beauty includes the instrument cluster, infotainment screen and passenger display that runs across the car’s entire dashboard. I spent so long fiddling with the settings and exploring the options, including the incredible Energising Comfort system, that I almost forgot I had to drive the thing.

This feature is truly remarkable; by selecting from a plethora of options depending on what mood you want, the car’s ambient lighting and giant screen is awash with colour while sounds varying from lapping waves to forest chirping and crackling fires play out of the impressive sound system. Oh, and did I mention that your seat gives you a bespoke massage too?

After a spot of lunch, it was time for the EQB. I

had already test driven this recently, so check out our June edition if you want to read my more extensive thoughts on that model.

That leaves me more room to talk about my favourite car of the day, the EQS! This luxurious beauty is the German marque’s greatest gift to sustainable mobility. The luscious materials and panoramic roof set an opulent tone, and I took a minute just to enjoy the vibe of the spacious, stylish sedan, flicking through an entire spectrum of colour to get the cabin mood lighting just right. On the road, it was just as gorgeous to drive. Even in Sport mode (of course!), it was responsive to the touch and had precise steering.

My favourite feature, however, was a customisable ‘engine sound’, which is emitted at various volumes depending on how hard you press the throttle. Of course, one of the huge misses with electric vehicles is that gorgeous purr when you put your foot down, but here you don’t miss a thing … and with the added benefit of no toxic fumes being belched into the air or indeed annoying sleeping neighbours when you return home in the middle of the night!

With every passing year the benefits of petrol power over electric get harder to justify. The future is here.

The First Canadian EV Brand

AXL Electric Vehicles (AXL), a Canadian automotive company, is dedicated to revolutionising the EV industry by making luxury electric vehicles more affordable. The company recently announced the world premiere of its SHARX-5, the company’s new electric mid-size SUV in Dubai.

The new vehicle was revealed during an event attended by the company’s Founder & CEO, Ali Eslami, higher management, and top engineers who worked to achieve the company’s mission to create a surprisingly affordable luxury car. The SHARX-5 is a fivepassenger midsize SUV with a driving range of up to 500 km and acceleration of 0-100 km/h in 7.4 seconds.

“We are filling a need for a more affordable EV that also delivers a luxurious driving experience. The global automotive market is witnessing a rapid shift to electric vehicles where governments are beginning to curb the sale of new gas-powered vehicles, a shift that’s coming sooner than many people think”, says Mr. Eslami.

“Repairs and maintenance are not expensive for EVs and that AXL will be manufacturing electric vehicles that are made up of fewer components than a gas vehicle, with the ability to be updated over-the-air,” he adds.

THE NEW BMW 5 SERIES

The market launch of the new BMW 5 Series will begin in October 2023. More dynamic than ever, featuring a wealth of digital innovations and, for the first time, all-electric drive – the BMW i5 takes the lead on the road to sustainable premium mobility in the upper mid-range vehicle segment. The new model generation will be offered worldwide with all-electric drive and as well as with highly efficient petrol engine including 48-volt mild hybrid technology.

A clear and reduced design language emphasises the new 5 Series’ sporty elegance and presence. The front view of the new BMW 5 Series is characterised by a modern interpretation of the twin headlights and BMW kidney grille. LED elements arranged almost vertically serve as turn indicators and daytime driving lights. The BMW kidney grille, which projects far forward, features a wide surround and optional BMW Iconic Glow contour lighting.

Notably, the cockpit of the new BMW 5 Series has a significantly reduced number of buttons and controls compared to the predecessor model. This is achieved by consistently digitalising functions. The BMW Curved Display reinterprets the brand’s hallmark idea of driver orientation. In addition, the new BMW 5 Series features a significantly expanded range of systems for automated driving and parking. The highlight of the range is the optional Driving Assistant Professional including Steering and Lane Control Assist and Distance Control with Stop & Go function.

THE POWER OF A PIVOT

Do you recall middle school level Physics where we were taught the concept of a pivot tool? As a recap, it is essentially a tool that allows an object to be moved in a different direction. And sometimes, that’s exactly what you or your business needs - a pivot. The question however is, how do you do this? How do you understand your point of pivot, the direction you want to go and how to get there? There are some basic frameworks that can help you with this process. Let’s dive in.

Find the source of pain

Like a physician, either yourself or with the help of a professional, examine the numbers, find the trends, and locate the problem. It is not as simple as it sounds. The answer is rarely “we don’t have customers”. That is the starting point. The real answer is in why you don’t have the demand you planned. It could be your product or service is priced wrong, it could be your costs are higher than competitors or it could even be that you have a wrong product altogether. Whatever the source of the pain, knowing it is essential because it tells you where to begin.

Numbers speak – understand what they are saying

If you have been operational, you should and likely would have data. Data on who has purchased your products or services, data on how payments are being made, data on who pays and who doesn’t. This is the tip of the iceberg. Most companies have a lot of data of value without realising it. This is part of the system that will show you what your next change can be. Review it in complete detail or hire someone to. Get more eyes on it and find the trends. Something is likely to spark.

Find your areas of strength

Most entrepreneurs notice the value of that which is feeding their current business and that which

has been added to the price. However, often, there is value to be derived from industry expertise, from understanding value chains, from knowledge related to suppliers, from systems and from processes. These may not give you value if you sell the company, yet, if you’re looking for how to pivot, these will likely be your main points of stability from where you can manoeuvre your next move.

Look for the ‘point of Ikigai.’

My interpretation of the Japanese concept of ikigai in a business context is an adaptation of the original concept. I see it as the point of stability where a product has a demand at a price that is commercially viable for the entrepreneur. You may see a product need and it could be a very real need. However, not all demand can be met in a commercially viable manner. It is possible your existing product doesn’t meet some criteria of this definition.

It is said that failure is the best teacher, if we are receptive students. In my interaction with clients, I have found that failure comes from external circumstances, from events beyond one’s control and also from events within our control but where we choose incorrectly. Hindsight is 20/20 – but only if you wear the right glasses. When looking for a solution, remember that it needs to leverage what you learned from this amazing teacher. Something new doesn’t always mean starting over, it can mean just reworking where you are now to change where you want to go.

Verdict:

Another smash hit from the superstar.

What’s the story?

- (Subtract) is the sixth studio album by English singersongwriter Ed Sheeran. A mostly acoustic album, production was handled by Aaron Dessner on every track, alongside Fred Again, Max Martin and Shellback. Sheeran and Dessner wrote more than 30 songs together during a month-long studio session, which was eventually cut down to the album’s fourteen tracks. - (Subtract) serves as the final mathematicalthemed album by Sheeran.

Worth a listen?

Even if - (Subtract) wasn’t the predestined title for the last of Ed Sheeran’s mathematic titles, the name would suit the haunted 2023 album. Absence hangs heavy over the record, perhaps the inevitable result of the singer/songwriter coming through a period where he fought a plagiarism lawsuit over his hit ‘Thinking Out Loud’, supported his wife as she discovered a cancerous tumour during her second pregnancy and saw the death of his close friend Jamal Edwards. A tender touch when combined with a preponderance of ballads turns - (Subtract) into a curiously recessive album; its emotions are raw, but its execution is reserved. Ultimately, that means - (Subtract) provides a sense of comfort that’s possibly accidental, even at his darkest moments.

Kesha Gag Order

This album is called Gag Order because Kesha feels she’s been restricted in her speech due to her ongoing litigation with her former producer Dr. Luke. Those lawsuits prevented her from speaking directly about the events at the root of her personal trauma, so she winds up writing around the problem on the album, focusing on the emotional aftermath instead of the instigating events. Given the anger and sadness roiling in her psyche – feelings only intensified during the isolation of Covid-19 – it’s not surprising that Gag Order is a twisted ball of fury and sorrow. Her inner turmoil is conveyed through washes of electronics, contorted Auto-Tunes, spectral samples and a keening performance from Kesha, whose passion cuts against the dour atmosphere.

Jonas Brothers

The Album

Having delivered their comeback with ease, the Jonas Brothers were faced with a difficult prospect: they needed to keep the good times rolling. To that end, they decided to ditch many of the collaborators from their last album and supplement the frothy melodies with bright, soulful grooves that split the difference between disco and retro-minded modern revivals. It’s a fleet, sleek sound that helps draw attention to the trio’s natural effervescence without seeming especially sugary. It does seem tailored for the sunshine, with the record sounding like it was made with relaxation in mind; it’s all shimmering soft rock and tempered disco.

Alison Goldfrapp

The Love Invention

Alison Goldfrapp’s voice, songwriting and very name are so intertwined with her wide-ranging body of work with Will Gregory as Goldfrapp that it makes establishing her identity as a solo artist uniquely difficult. Fortunately, her first album on her own proves she’s up to the challenge. Instead of striving to make a deeply serious set of songs – as many

bandmembers do when they go solo – on The Love Invention, she offers her listeners a chance to dance their cares away with some of the most direct and euphoric music of her career. Her respect for the power of the groove results in one of her most cohesive projects, and one that makes the dance floor that much classier with its presence.

Feeling

Hot Hot Hot!

The temperatures are rising, and you know what that means – it’s time for some fun in the sun! Farah Baig brings you her top picks this summer to get you ready for your next dreamy vacation, staycation or party weekend.

There’s no feeling quite like soaking up the sun on a hot summer’s day. While most people head indoors, few things make me happier than a summer getaway at a coastal town, or a beach day with friends and family.

A great pair of sunnies, a chic bathing suit, beach bag, cute flip flops and summer dress are essential in my books. Here are some of the trendiest pieces from regional and international designers, available in stores or online.

Matches has launched an exclusive 22-piece capsule collection (featured on the cover in an image by photographer Gabriel Ponton) with Kika Vargas through which the designer reimagines her signature voluminous dresses and separates in vibrant floral prints in addition to balancing single-tone pieces. Vargas draws inspiration from her Colombian heritage and bold, art and architecture-inflected perspective. The colour palette reflects the local flora and fauna of Bogotá with lush foliagelike green – the right vibe this

Another excellent addition to your summer wardrobe is Tutti & Co’s luxurious resortwear which are made with quick-drying fabric. The UK brand’s collection pays tribute to the natural colours and textures of its coastal landscape with these head-turning co-ords that are even ideal for a stroll in the city.

True must-haves this summer are the stylish one-piece swimsuits and elegant cover-ups inspired by the sunset from regional swimwear brand Ya Omri. The GCC-based brand’s 2023 collection has an impeccable fit which flatters all shapes and sizes.

At the very top of my wishlist is the chic and versatile ‘Tiger Tote’ collection from the luxury leatherware brand, Tiger Marrón. The totes effortlessly are spacious and lightweight, and are available in four variants: Mama (Large), Youth (Mid), and Cub (Mini). There are four designs available with options made from vegan leather, jacquard, and canvas. If I had to pick one, though, it would have to be the Forest Tiger design in pristine white. I can picture it going beautifully with pastel, bright or monochromatic tones. So versatile!

Better Together!

It’s a time-tested rule of fashion: The accessories can make or break an outfit. Pairing your summer dress or bathing suit with the right accessories will have you feeling truly powerful.

And as I always say, every summer, to willing listeners – don’t forget to protect your peepers! Check out my favourite sunglasses from the SS23 collections of the iconic brands, Burberry and Miu Miu, for some inspiration. Have a fantastic summer!

For the prefect basket bag and oppulent shoulder bags, Kurt Geiger’s collaborative capsule collection with iconic British designer, Matthew Williamson will get you ready for high summer. The 80-piece collection consists of a curation of bags and accessories, shoes, swimwear, and jewellery and vibrant sandals. A trio of hues run deep through every design - turquoise and emerald tones, reminiscent of Matthew’s current home – Mallorca, that evoke the sparkling Mediterranean Sea, warm burnt orange tints peppered with rich aubergine, inspired by the ruggedly seductive sun-baked landscape, and finally the iconic Kurt Geiger multi-colour iteration, a kaleidoscope colour burst.

A MOMENTOUS AMBASSADORIAL DEBUT

Bahrain has a thriving Filipino community, with the East Asian nation comprising one of the Kingdom’s largest expat populations. On June 12, the nation celebrated its independence day with a series of events held in Bahrain.

Kristian Harrison sat down with the newly-appointed Ambassador of the Republic of the Philippines to the Kingdom of Bahrain, HE Anne Jalando-on Louis, to discuss her diplomatic career so far, the current state of bilateral relations between the two countries and their plans to bolster ties in the future.

You have had quite a distinguished career. Can you give us a brief overview of your diplomatic postings and missions to date?

I entered the Philippines Foreign Service and joined the Department of Foreign Affairs in 1996. I was first assigned to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia in 2000 as a Junior Officer, and then I returned to Manila after that to complete

a compulsory two years of service in my home county. I then became Consul General in Sydney for six years, before returning to Manila in 2011 for another six-year stint.

In 2019 I returned to Malaysia as Deputy Chief of Mission and Consul General, which I was very proud to be part of during the challenging pandemic, before coming to

Bahrain in April last year initially as Chargé d’Affaires. In December, I was officially appointed as a nominee for the Bahrain ambassadorship by my government, and I finally presented my credentials to His Majesty King Hamad in May to officially assume the position. It’s an honour to serve my first full ambassadorship and posting in the Middle East here in Bahrain.

PEOPLE | interview July 2023 www.womanthismonth.com 72

How do you feel about living in Bahrain? What are your key observations about the country and how does it compare to your previous postings?

All the countries I have been to have been different in terms of political and economic relationships, each with various considerations. I’m very pleased with my posting here and the welcome I’ve received in the GCC so far. It’s been a very fulfilling year with many bilateral activities and the local Filipino community is engaging. I look forward to further enhancing ties in the year ahead.

What do you consider to be your most significant goals going forward in this Bahrain posting?

As we have just emerged from the pandemic, there are many activities that had to be put on hold during that period. We are currently trying to work with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to jump start high level co-operation again and move forward. Most importantly of all these, we hope to be able to convene the Philippines-Bahrain Bilateral Consultations and forge partnerships in numerous corporate activities. One of my main challenges is to increase trade and drive economic changes through business delegations.

Of your many career achievements over the years, which particular experiences do you think have helped you most in your role as ambassador?

I have been lucky to be part of a career that has been grounded in service. Every day comes with a new challenge, but as long as you greet it with optimism and a willingness to learn, you’ll always overcome them. Working with such great teams also helps, I think keeping an open door and accepting ideas from them makes my job far easier… you have to be a people’s person and I think I strive towards that.

How many Filipino expats live in Bahrain? Has this number risen or declined since the pandemic? What are the most prominent vocations amongst the Filipino community’s residents?

As of April this year, the LMRA reported 57,000 Filipinos in Bahrain, which is up from 49,000 in 2021. It shows that despite businesses closing and many expats leaving during the pandemic, the number has rebounded. This perfectly summarises how efficiently Bahrain dealt with Covid-19 and its aftermath, with businesses now hiring and thriving again.

The highest proportion of residents, at least half, are domestic service workers in households, followed by those in retail, sales and auto shops. Then we have many

members in hospitality, restaurants and of course our skilled professionals lead the way in fields such as engineering, accounting and healthcare.

What activities does the Embassy of Philippines in Bahrain undertake to promote cooperation and unity between the two countries?

Since 1979 we have conducted numerous high level visits, the most important of which was former President Rodrigo Duterte’s visit in August 2017. Last month, Bahrain’s Foreign Ministry Undersecretary, Dr. Mohammed Ali Behzad, led a delegation to Manila. These kinds of high level visits enhance our countries’ partnership and we aim to build on this in the years to come. We have more than 20 signed bilateral agreements, with more pending, in the fields of tourism, education and healthcare amongst others.

To celebrate our 125th Independence Day last month, our embassy hosted a reception featuring 200 guests, featuring a demonstration of Filipino culture through popular singing duo The Nightingales and a selection of our cuisine. We also promoted tourism opportunities and other Filipino products.

Are there any high-level delegations planned for the near future from the Philippines to Bahrain or vice-versa?

We are due to host high level meetings with bilateral consultations at an undersecretary level, with a joint commission meeting to follow. Both will be hosted in Manila. We also hope to have a large business delegation visiting Bahrain before the end of the year.

How do you feel Filipino culture has influenced Bahrain?

Many Bahrainis I have spoken to love to tell me how many Tagalog words they know because of their familiarity with our people, especially those who have domestic help from the Philippines!

I think our food has also had a profound effect in Bahrain with many dishes adapted to the local cuisine. Filipinos are also extremely hard workers, which I think is an ethic that has been adopted by locals.

What are the current trade figures between Philippines and Bahrain and what areas of business or commerce between the two countries do you think could be improved significantly?

In 2022, Bahrain was the Philippines’ 70th largest exporting destination and 75th importing destination in terms of volume. The surplus was in Bahrain’s favour, so we are working to improve that and are positing the Philippines as an alternative source of requirements for the Bahrain market in areas such as spare parts in the aeronautics and motoring industries.

Currently the main imports from the Philippines are agricultural products, especially fruits like bananas, pineapples and cooking condiments. Women and children’s clothing are also popular products. Bahrain’s main export to the Philippines is iron and aluminium.

Is there anything else you would like to add to this interview?

I am very pleased to be assigned to Bahrain, working closely with the government to enhance relations and also to engage with the private and academic sectors, and of course our stakeholders and partners. I have found the Filipino community to be open and cooperative and I would like them to know that the embassy is always open to them should they need our help.

BREATHE LIFE INTO YOUR SKIN

Your skin needs an adequate amount of oxygen to function effectively. Oxygen is delivered to skin cells via red blood cells, where it creates Adenosine triphosphate (ATP) — the essential fuel for cellular activity. Pollution, stress, UV rays, smoking, and fatigue all contribute to a decrease in air quality and oxygen supply to the body. As a result, cellular respiration is inhibited, leading to slowed cellular regeneration, and a build-up of toxins in the skin.

FILORGA’s OXYGEN-GLOW CC Cream has a revolutionary formula that combines triple C control for colour correction and carboxytherapy, a technique that re-oxygenates cells by injecting a small quantity of sterile medical carbon dioxide into the skin. The first-of-its-kind hybrid formula acts as an oxygenation booster, complexion perfecter, and urban protector.

Containing a unique perfecting radiance formula inspired by carboxytherapy, an aesthetic medicine technique that enhances skin glow, the CC cream’s universal adjustable shade features encapsulated micro-pigments that correct, unify, and enhance all skin tones.

This CC Cream also offers triple protection against UV, blue light, and pollution, maintaining a radiant complexion and perfect skin texture throughout the day.

FILORGA has completely redefined the concept of CC cream with this latest offering. Combining the benefits of a high-tech day cream with those of a complexion perfector, this innovative product is unlike any other.

A HEALTHY, GLOSSY TINT!

It’s time we started treating our hair like we do our skin? Harvested from plants, henna is a completely natural, vegan herbal hair colourant which has been used by humans for thousands of years. Rather than breaking the cuticle or stripping away the hair’s natural colour, henna coats the hair in a protective, translucent layer that boosts body and shine – so much so that some people use henna primarily as a treatment for hair health, with the sheer glossy colour being the bonus.

Lush’s unique cocoa butter henna brick enables the product to slide through strands with ease, adding extra conditioning and softness. Wrapped in recycled paper packaging, Lush’s henna is vegan, self-preserving, and completely natural. By sourcing the best Iranian henna

through fair trade and organic cocoa butter from Sierra Leone where farmers are helping restore the Gola rainforest, Lush’s henna brick is not only good for the hair but also the planet.

Lush’s new and improved henna formula contains more cocoa butter than its predecessor for smooth application and soft hair, and is available in five shades: strawberry blonde, cool brown, copper red, warm chestnut brown and deep coffee brown. Available at LUSH stores and on lush.com/mena

Through her interesting content online, she not only informs the general public of developments in the field, but inspires the youth to pursue a career in STEM. She tells Farah Baig about her journey and aspirations, and shares some insight into the life of a scientist.

Could you tell our readers a little bit about yourself, and tell us about your ties to Bahrain?

My mother is Bahraini and my father is English, and I was born and raised in Bahrain. In fact, I went to the British School of Bahrain where I have so many fond memories! However, we later moved to England as my father wanted my siblings and I to carry out our studies there. Leaving Bahrain was one of the hardest things I’ve had to do, no country compares to your home.

I am now a Cardiovascular Medicine and Pharmacology PhD student at the William Harvey Research Institute in London. My research focuses on understanding the molecular mechanisms at play in heart failure.

My PhD is partly funded by AstraZeneca, whereby I undertake research in their labs

in Cambridge using the latest techniques and technology. In my spare time, I love creating science communication content on Instagram to share my love for science with others.

That’s very interesting! Is there a specific reason for which you chose this field?

The heart has always been a fascinating organ to me. I was always amazed at how it was able to pump non-stop from the moment we are made. The structure and anatomy of the heart is also really beautiful, all the different chambers and cell types, and how they are able to contract rhythmically. I always loved learning about the cardiovascular system since I was in school.

My research in particular is translational, meaning our work collects non-clinical research results and provides clinical applications, therefore more directly impacting human health and wellbeing.

Cardiovascular disease remains to be a leading cause of death globally, and there is still so much that is unknown in terms of possible treatments and better diagnostics, so research in cardiovascular medicine is needed more than ever.

Could you kindly share your experience being a PhD student in Cardiovascular Pharmacology in the UK?

I was initially unsure whether to undertake a PhD after my Master’s degree, so I worked as a Research Assistant at the University of Oxford in the Cardiovascular Medicine Department to see if working in academia was for me. It’s here that I found a real love for research and knew I

PEOPLE | interview July 2023 www.womanthismonth.com 76

wanted to now conduct my own research in the field. I am now in the second-year of my PhD and I couldn’t be happier. I am honoured to have been accepted into one of the most prestigious institutes for cardiovascular research in Europe. I am really passionate about my research project and it’s a great feeling when you get exciting data for the first time!

You’ve amassed quite a following online. Tell us about your presence as ‘The Cardiac Scientist’.

I started my account around the same time as many other creatives, during lockdown in 2020. I had just started my dream job at the University of Oxford and then two months in the country was in lockdown! I wanted to use my time wisely while stuck at home and had always wanted to do something creative and make videos but never had the time previously. The initial aim was to give others an insight into the life of a scientist, as sometimes it can seem quite mysterious. Everyone knows what a doctor does, but what really goes on in a lab? I hoped to introduce and inspire others into the STEM subjects and show them that there is no set educational route into the field. I also wanted to teach laboratory techniques and talk about science in the news. I am a huge advocate for education, I truly believe your education is your freedom and hope to inspire others to think the same way through the work that I do.

It was a bit nerve wracking at first because you have to really put yourself out there for the world to see, but I pushed myself to do it and now I am so happy that I did. Through my science communication journey, I have met

so many amazing, intelligent people and have had an influx of media-related opportunities.

On that note, what would be your advice for young women wishing to pursue a career in STEM?

I want young women to be able to see themselves working in a field they really love, whether that be in the STEM field or not. But specifically, I would want them to know that there is definitely a place for them in STEM, and there are so many different options they could go into: electrical engineering, physics, biology, computer science etc. There will be something that fits their passion and skills, so my advice for them would be to start exploring the different options and to get to know what they like.

Intelligence is beautiful, confidence is beautiful, and doing what you love is also beautiful. Don’t take your education for granted, it’s your tool to create a future you want for yourself. I am also happy for anyone to contact me on Instagram to ask about my studies and give advice about studying in the UK, my door (or DM) is always open!

What can you tell us about your recent placement as an intern in science policy?

I thoroughly enjoy working in research, but I have also been enjoying my science communication work and wanted to know if there were fields where I could merge my love for the two, this is how I came across science policy.

Science policy serves as the bridge between researchers and the public, to translate technical scientific issues into something that can be utilised as progressive policies for society. The aim of our work is also to ensure the transparency of research findings with the public. In order to gain public trust in science we need to be transparent about the ways in which policy makers use evidence to develop regulations, laws, and legislations.

As part of my placement, I will be meeting with members of parliament, researchers, and the general public in Parliament to facilitate discussions in this arena. Politics is a completely new field to me, so I have been learning lots since starting my placement!

How do you feel about this milestone achievement?

I don’t take the time so much to think about how far I have come, maybe I should do that more often. But I am definitely proud of all the things I have achieved so far. It has almost had a positive feedback loop effect on me, where I now want to work hard to achieve more.

It must be said however, that I have been able to achieve all that I have so far because of the love and support of my family. My parents have always allowed me to flourish and invested a lot into my education. Whatever I achieve in this world, it is because of them and I hope God always rewards them for all they have done for me.

What would you say is a long-term and shortterm goal of yours as a woman in STEM?

My short-term goal is to finish my PhD to be honest, and to do it well! There is so much more to a PhD than just doing research to write a thesis. There are many opportunities to do public engagement and outreach, to give talks in secondary and primary schools, to present your work at conferences and network with other scientists.

My long-term goal is to work in a field where I am able to have a positive impact on people on a wider scale. My interests include lecturing at universities and continuing my science communication through the media industry. I hope to create a platform for scientists and science enthusiasts to come together to exchange their knowledge and experience in the field.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

I feel Bahrain needs more investment in science and technology; we need more research centres and brilliant scientists to fill those institutes. In particular, we need more medical research scientists and institutes to encourage growth in these sectors, just as our neighbouring countries have done.

Bahrain is filled with intelligent, creative, hard-working people (I know this as I’m one of them) and this is definitely an area we could work on. I am very proud to be Bahraini and wherever I go in life, I always make sure to carry the spirit of my people with me. I will always be happy to collaborate and work with any Bahraini institutes or universities to talk about my work in STEM and encourage others to pursue a career in science.

THE RISE OF THE ‘CHIEF SUSTAINABILITY OFFICER’

Chartered Manager, Eman Deabil (DipESG, PfMP, IPMO-P, SIP), explores the rise of the Chief Sustainability Officer (CSO) role worldwide and in our region based on data availability.

Sustainability has become an increasingly important topic in recent years. With sustainability being the talk of the town, businesses around the world are recognising the need to take serious actions to address critical challenges such as climate change, social justice, equality, diversity, and inclusion. One way that organisations are approaching this is by appointing a Chief Sustainability Officer (CSO) to oversee their sustainability practices.

CSOs in Bahrain

According to various companies’ websites, annual reports and recent news, seven out of 43 listed companies in Bahrain have CSOs appointed at an executive management (c-suite level). 29 percent are standalone CSOs and 71 percent hold the position of CSO and another role.

The First Chief Sustainability Officer (CSO)

The role of the Chief Sustainability Officer is to oversee a company’s sustainability practices, including environmental, social, and governance (ESG) initiatives and metrics. This can include developing and monitoring sustainability framework, strategies, setting objectives and targets, and ensuring compliance with relevant regulations and reporting standards. The CSO is also responsible for engaging with relevant stakeholders, including investors, board of directors, employees, customers, and communities, to ensure that sustainability efforts and outcomes are aligned with their expectations and needs.

It’s worth mentioning that the role/title is not new as it’s been around for approximately 20 years! However, the role of CSOs might be new in this part of the world.

In 2004, Linda Fisher was the first person to receive the title of ‘Chief Sustainability Officer’ at DuPont. By 2011, there were 29 CSOs in the USA’s publicly listed companies. Ms. Fisher holds a Bachelor of Arts, Master of

Here are the titles for the listed companies:

Business Administration (MBA) and a doctorate degree in Law. She worked for the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) as a Deputy Administrator before joining DuPont as a CSO.

According to a 2023 survey conducted by EY, 81 percent of the respondents confirmed that their organisations have a CSO or equivalent role. While 69 percent of the ones who responded that they don’t have a CSO confirmed that their organisations are planning to hire one within six to 12 months.

Ms. Linda Fisher

As a matter of fact, the role of CSOs is evolving in the GCC overall as companies recognise the importance of sustainability in achieving their long-term economic vision. Here are some of the key indications:

1. Increasing focus on ESG reporting and disclosure: Many organisations in the GCC are now recognising the importance of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) reporting and disclosure. CSOs are playing a key role in ensuring that organizations are meeting their ESG reporting requirements.

2. Integration of sustainability into corporate strategy: Organisations in the GCC recognised that sustainability is not a ‘nice to have’ part but an integral part of a long-term strategy. CSOs are increasingly working closely and

aligning efforts with senior management to integrate sustainability considerations into core business operations and decision-making processes.

3. Focus on sustainable finance: There is a growing interest in sustainable finance in the GCC, including green bonds, sustainabilitylinked loans, and other forms of sustainable finance. CSOs are playing a key role in guiding organisations towards sustainable finance options and ensuring that sustainability considerations are integrated into investment decisions.

4. Regulatory frameworks: In recent years, several GCC countries have introduced regulatory frameworks aimed at promoting sustainability and ESG reporting. Bahrain introduced a voluntary ESG reporting guideline for listed companies in 2020. CSOs are playing a key role in ensuring compliance with these regulations and in developing comprehensive ESG strategies that go beyond mere compliance. The infographic below illustrates the timeline of the key milestones:

5. Focus on social sustainability: While environmental sustainability is a key focus for many CSOs in the GCC, there is also a growing emphasis on social sustainability. This includes issues such as labour rights, diversity and inclusion, and community engagement. CSOs are working to ensure that organisations contribute to the social development of the region.

The rise of the Chief Sustainability Officer (CSO) is a clear indication of the growing importance

of sustainability in today’s business landscape. As organisations across the globe face increasing pressure to address sustainability issues, CSOs will play a critical role in driving these efforts. While the role is still relatively new, it has already become a vital part of the corporate landscape, and its importance is only set to grow in the years ahead; therefore, it’s essential to groom and grow the right talents that can handle this role with extreme integrity and professionalism.

It’s playtime!

Although

It may look frivolous to us, but play really helps our kids learn valuable lessons, test out roles and figure out their place in the world. As a parent, you can foster playtime in ways that can make it even more beneficial for your children’s developing brains and social skills.

Here are a few steps to making the most of it:

Use spatial language

Remember the last time you tried to assemble some IKEA furniture? That is a test of your spatial skills. If you want your kids to develop better spatial skills, play is a perfect way to start. Building blocks, construction sets and magnetic tiles are classic toys that still work best for developing spatial skills. The key, however, is guidance from adults. Using words like ‘over’, ‘under’ and ‘next to’ will help your kids pick up on directionality and spatial understanding.

Let them (and their imaginations) take the lead

Stick with the basics

In our age of technology, classic toys like blocks, dolls, tools and books may seem old fashioned. There are no electronics, beeps, lights or touch screens. For kids, however, classic toys are like brain food. These toys are classic for a reason—they are open-ended.

Yes, we are the parents and we technically know more than our kids, but when it comes to play, they are the experts. Besides providing boundaries to ensure safety, we should try to allow their imaginations lead their play in the direction that they want it to go in.

For parents that can be a challenge—we think we need to make it more fun or educational, but kids generally have an idea of the type of play that interests them the most. In fact, research backs this up, too. Studies indicate that children whose parents follow their lead and pace in playtime developed better cognitive skills, such as mental flexibility and controlling impulses.

This means that kids have to use their brain power and imagination to create new ways of playing with these toys each time they use them. Beeps and lights are fun, but if that is all a toy can do, the novelty will wear off quickly. Classic toys have longevity and brain-building power because they can be made into anything.

There are real language-learning differences too. Although research is new in this area, early studies show that infants vocalise less when playing with electronic toys compared to classic toys or books. Relatedly, adults tend to talk to infants less while they are playing with electronic toys, rather than classic toys. This is important, of course, because the number of words children hear is related directly to their language development.

Lifestyle | opinion Womant hismonth.com 80 Jul 2023
there has been a big push toward academics for young children in recent years, research continues to show that play is really the engine for learning among our little ones. Our parenting columnist, Ouiam El Hassani, tells us how to make playtime more beneficial.

Don’t be afraid to label and repeat

If you are a parent to a toddler, you know that repetition is a big part of your life. Your child probably wants to hear the same story every day, play with the same toy and maybe even wear the same shirt. They really aren’t just trying to annoy you. Underneath all the repetition is a brain hard at work figuring out the world. Research tells us that the same repetition in language development works, too. Kids whose parents use more words and repeat words tend to learn more language by the age of two than children of parents who do not.

Let the outdoors be their playmate

Most of us know that kids enjoy the outdoors, but kids also physiologically need the outdoors. The benefits for both brain and body are endless. In the outdoors, kids practice their gross motor skills, their eyes adjust to differing dimensions and their brains come alive with questions and insights about textures, water and light.

Playing with your kids doesn’t have to be pre-planned or Pinterest-worthy. With a little guidance, even the simplest playtime can help them learn and bond with you.

NIAGARA FALLS

Situated along the Canada-US border, Niagara Falls is one of the most famous waterfalls in the world. The water from Lake Erie flows into Lake Ontario over these massive waterfalls, known for the great quantity of water that is constantly tumbling over the vertical drop. Niagara Falls is actually a set of three falls: It consists of the largest section, known as Horseshoe Falls, with a drop of 187 feet; a second section on the American side of the river, known as the American Falls, with a drop of 89 feet; and a much thinner section located next to the American Falls, known as Bridal Veil Falls, with a drop of 78 feet.

YELLOWSTONE NATIONAL PARK

With dramatic peaks and pristine lakes, Yellowstone National Park, mostly in Wyoming, is an outdoor enthusiast’s paradise. Fun fact: it was America’s first national park and is bigger than Rhode Island! Multicoloured pools swirl around hot springs; verdant forests weave past expansive meadows and volatile geysers launch streams of steaming water toward the sky. With so much unspoiled natural beauty, it’s no wonder why everyone suspected John Colter (a scout for explorers Lewis and Clark) was embellishing when he first described Yellowstone’s geothermal curiosities in 1807. While you traverse its 3,000-plus square miles of mountains, canyons, geysers and waterfalls, be prepared to share the trails with permanent residents like buffalo, elk and sometimes even grizzlies.

GREAT EXPEDITIONS

PACIFIC COAST HIGHWAY

YOSEMITE NATIONAL PARK

Millions of people come to this Sierra Nevada wilderness each year to see jagged peaks, glaciers, lush meadows and some of the world’s tallest waterfalls. Spanning 1,200 square miles, Yosemite offers activities ranging from child-friendly to extreme. Massive granite slopes like Half Dome and El Capitan dominate the landscape, taunting rock climbers. Paddlers dip into lakes and rivers, drivers cruise the dramatic Tioga Road, and day hikers walk by sequoias and canyons. Backpackers take to the rugged John Muir trail, named for the writer who helped create the park in 1890.

The legendary Pacific Coast Highway was first started in the 1930s, and remains a marvel of human effort that hugs over 900km of California’s rugged and beautiful coastlines. It is one of the most astoundingly scenic roads in the world, meant to be traversed slowly, while gasping at the mountains, towering trees, expansive beaches and endless sky. It also affords travellers an unparalleled opportunity to dip into all the character California has to offer: pioneer outposts, surfing villages, farm-fresh foods, local wine, roadside kitsch, Hollywood glitz and bohemia.

The United States is a diverse, beautiful country with a multitude of climates and landscapes. The most popular tourist hotspots are already well-established, an inescapable consequence of popular culture. Therefore, we’ve decided to shift attention away from iconic landmarks and cities and instead feature a selection of some of the finest natural hotspots for those wanting a leisurely hike or a breath-taking view.

ROCKY MOUNTAIN NATIONAL PARK

Rocky Mountain National Park in northern Colorado encompasses 415 square miles of breath-taking, protected mountain wilderness. With more than 300 miles of trails, panoramic vistas of snow-capped peaks, picturesque meadows, valleys and meandering rivers, not to mention Trail Ridge Road (the highest continuous paved road in the United States, hitting 12,183ft in elevation), the choose-your-own-adventure options are endless. Hike it, bike it, fish it, climb it, drive it, camp it, photograph it … or all of the above.

GRAND CANYON

Okay, we admit, you might have heard of this one. After all, this incredible natural attraction is one of the most visited places in the United States. Carved out by the Colorado River, the Grand Canyon cuts deep into the landscape, creating dramatic cliff walls and ledges. Visitors standing on the rim of the canyon can see down to the canyon floor a mile below, and look out over the ridges and cliffs that run as far as the eye can see.

HAWAI’I VOLCANOES NATIONAL PARK

Visit Hawai’i Volcanoes

National Park for a chance to get up close and personal with two of the world’s most active volcanoes, Mauna Loa and Kilauea. The latter continually erupts, which visitors can witness from multiple points in the park, including Crater Rim Drive and the famous Chain of Craters Road. The scenic lookout offers expansive views of the Pacific Ocean and the ancient village of Kealakomo.

ARCHES NATIONAL PARK

Located north of Moab, Utah, Arches National Park is so named for the 2,000 windsculpted sandstone arches gracing the area – the largest such concentration in the world. The most famous of these is the iconic 52ft-tall Delicate Arch, whose image can be seen on Utah license plates, but Arches will amaze you with its sheer range of soaring pinnacles, massive rock fins and giant balanced rocks. Arches is also one of the few national parks where many of the top formations can be seen from the comfort of your car – perfect for those who want the sights without the sweat.

Progress not perfection

Recently, I found myself spiralling. Something that I did innocently lead to an uncomfortable conversation with people in my life. I was upset by the interaction and responded accordingly. Despite all of the parties involved coming from a good place, I found myself reverting to old habits: catastrophising, getting upset, and working myself up and most importantly not giving myself my dues. All the things I have been working hard at to rectify and change.

It got me thinking about progress versus perfection. In our healing journeys we often find that we may get triggered or worked up and revert to the same old habits that exhausted us, that send us spiralling away from the good habits we’ve tried to form.

Also, when we are trying to work on our best selves mentally and emotionally, we end up creating such high expectations of ourselves

that when we revert and slip into old habits, we can be so hard on ourselves but also feel like going back to the old way of doing things is the right way. Going back to old habits is normal, human behaviour is moulded on safety and as I recently discovered in an article by Psychology Today, we easily slip back into our old habits when we’re tired and stressed because old habits provide a sense of comfort! The article further states: “Since safety is the mammal brain’s main goal, it constantly tracks potential dangers and prefers us to stick to our current habits because they have resulted in our survival up to this point.” So literally, our brains are helping us to stay “safe”.

When we are in the midst of doing what comes naturally to us, we also forget about the small steps we take in these moments to do better. I totally overlooked that my choice of words had changed when expressing myself. I didn’t

realise I waited to respond to the situation. I totally missed that I reflected on what I wanted to say before it came flying out of my mouth. I didn’t realise that I didn’t dwell on what had just transpired but moved on quickly and let it go, except only to draw on the experience for this column of course!

My old habit is to be so hard on myself that I immediately forgot all the steps I had taken to better myself. I forget that healing is a continuous journey and very importantly it is not happening in a straight line. It happens in stages, sometimes we go backward, sometimes we go forwards and hey, sometimes we even stand still in our journey.

So, being triggered and reverting to what feels natural to us is fine. But chances are you’ve reverted with a few changes that you’ve not noticed. To that I say progress and not perfection.

Lifestyle | opinion Womant hismonth.com 84 Jul 2023
Farrah Saville explains why healing is not linear and accepts that slipping into our old ways is just our brain’s way of trying to protect itself.

What’s the achievement you are most proud of?

My career progression despite all the obstacles I went through.

What’s the best piece of advice you have ever received?

Complete this sentence: On my day off I... would rather spend quality time with my kids, Maryam and Ahmed.

If you were to Google the meaning of ‘Fatema’ your results would state that it means ‘perfection’. Amakin HR and Admin Manager, Fatema Alkhan, believes that everyone has qualities that reflect the meaning of his or her name, but even then, perfection does not exist… even though we seek it. Fatema is a strong and independent person and says: “Some would call me a fighter who wants to make a difference seeking perfection in this strange world.” Let’s take a walk in her shoes!

Here are two that played a significant role in making me who I am today. When I was young, my dad said to me: “Education is not about studying and obtaining certificates, it’s about knowledge and knowledge comes through reading.” Since then, I have been reading endlessly; even if I’m against the idea of a book, I’d still want to know what it’s about.

Then in 2017, I read a quote by UAE Vice President, Prime Minister and Dubai Ruler, HH Shaikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum which I believe in. He said: “Who does not change is changed by circumstances and retreats, who does not develop is not awaited for by the world’s express train, and who does not learn the passing of days will only increase his backwardness.” Since then, I made sure I always pursue a better version of myself.

If you had to eat one thing for the rest of your life, what would it be?

My mum’s Koshari.

Something about you that most people don’t know: I would still want to keep this to myself. Yet, I will share that I cry over movies and even kids’ cartoons sometimes. What was the name of your first pet and what made it special?

Beauty, she was a Pakistani dog that was brought to us by one of my father’s friends and for some reason I was so attached to her although in a very short period she was gone.

Your preferred holiday destination?

Rome without a doubt! And I’ll make sure I keep dropping a coin in the fountain whenever I go there so I would go back again.
