elcome to another very exciting edition of Bahrain This Month. Believe it or not, I’m actually writing this down under from the beautiful city of Perth, Western Australia, as I take my first vacation in nearly four years. Even then, I can assure you all that my heart is still very much in Bahrain! As the weather gets increasingly pleasant there are even more events to look forward to. Being your reliable guide to entertainment, and all things Bahrain, you’ll find information on some of the best upcoming events including star-studded concerts, electronic music events and the unique show Faulty Towers too! Considering the fact that Bahrain is easily turning into a hub for gastronomy and entertainment in the region, we took a look at one of the most happening districts in Bahrain – Adliya. Check out our definitive guide to some of the people’s favourite venues in and around the busy Block 338 area including The Foundry, Howdy, Lanterns and more. In keeping with our mission of being connected to every community in Bahrain, we were delighted to meet with the new German ambassador to the Kingdom of Bahrain, HE Clemens Hach. He talks about his extensive diplomatic career, including his time as head of the Stabilisation Divison at the German Federal Foreign Office, and his priorities during his posting in Bahrain. We also had an insightful chat with a hugely influential figure in the Kingdom and the Gulf’s film and television scene, Qahtan Al Qahtani. Excitement is in the air (quite literally!) with the return of the Bahrain International Air Show, and one of the most anticipated acts is the phenomenal Royal Air Force (RAF) Red Arrows. We sat down for a chat with Flight Lieutenant Patrick Kershaw, also known as Red 3. In our dining section, you’ll find plenty of fantastic listings from some of the very best restaurants. We also had the pleasure of experiencing Hilton Bahrain’s delectable seafood night, and the unique Peruvian pop-up restaurant at the Four Seasons Hotel Bahrain Bay. WELCOMING THE NEW AMBASSADOR Earlier this year, the Kingdom of Bahrain and the Republic of Germany celebrated the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties between the two countries. We speak to the newly appointed German Ambassador to Bahrain, HE Clemens Hach, who brings a wealth of worldly experience with him.

is Excellency Clemens Hach, who recently presented his credentials to His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, has an extensive diplomatic career spanning over 20 years. The Kingdom of Bahrain is his sixth posting in a foreign country following his service in Latin America, the United States, East Africa and at the headquarters of the German Federal Foreign Office as the Head of the Stabilisation Divison. “This is my first post in the Middle East which to me is somewhat like coming home since I am, by education, a Middle Eastern guy. I studied Middle Eastern history and politics so it feels a lot like coming to a region that I have always been interested in after 20 years working in others,” says HE Hach. “After working in several countries, you learn to understand their specificities and approach it with great openness. I hope that this experience will help me learn about Bahrain, understand what our common priorities are and therefore form the priorities for my work.” WORKING FOR PEACE At the Stabilisation Division, HE had significant achievements when working on the Middle East (mainly Iraq), Afghanistan and numerous countries in West Africa. “The Stabilisation Division is something unique that the German Federal Foreign Office has that very few other countries have. interview Division works on crisis context with a political goal through peacemaking for which we had a very good tool set at our disposal,” HE states. “The main priority was working on the civilian complement to security-led counterterrorism operations. We had two main tools to help with our goals: peace building tools such as mediation, working on social cohesion, and what we call stabilisation. To explain stabilisation, once a place was freed from terrorist rule we would help the state come back as soon as possible with public services, electricity, water, education, civilian security and justice,” HE explains. Through this approach, in the framework of the Counter-Daesh Coalition, and being led by the Iraqi government with support from the United Nations, the international community was quite successful in their fight against Daesh in Iraq. In 2015, stabilisation work was able to help bring back internally displaced people within months of liberation. This included millions of people in cities like Ramadi or Mosul. “The work was short term in the sense that you have to be very quick and work hand-inhand with the security forces to make sure that there is no vacuum between the security intervention and the civilian intervention, but long term in its effect because the idea was to create a foundation for development and restoration of the social tissue in those areas,” HE states. ON BAHRAIN HE believes that the Kingdom of Bahrain is a model for the region. “First of all, I would like to express how impressed I was by His Majesty and the guidance he is giving to Bahrain not least on religious freedom and tolerance,” HE says, adding that he believes the visit of His Holiness Pope Francis is testament to this. “The reform process that Bahrain has undergone over the past years and the elections this year is something that we also highly appreciate in Germany,” HE says. Regarding priorities, the most important thing for HE the Ambassador in addition to the good bilateral relations is working together on international issues. “Bahrain has taken a very firm stance regarding the respect of international law and sovereignty where Ukraine is concerned. This is something we very much value. It is imperative that all parties around the world comply with the international laws that rule the way countries should behave in the international context,” HE says. “Germany and Bahrain are very like-minded when it comes to the respect of international law and territorial integrity. This is a field where we can further strengthen our cooperation, between Germany and Bahrain, the EU and GCC, and www.bahrainthismonth.com

at the international level with the UN which is definitely one of my priorities,” HE adds. DIPLOMATIC RELATIONS Between 500 and 600 Germans, including several doctors and university teachers, are believed to be residing in the Kingdom of Bahrain. Some of these individuals residing in Bahrain work in the Eastern Province of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The Kingdom of Bahrain and Germany have long-standing relations with 50 years of diplomatic and trade relations. Leading German companies which have invested in Bahrain include DHL with their Menahub, BASF, SMS, RMA and others who are producing in Bahrain for the GCC and international markets. This is in addition to large and smaller German companies which provide their services. “Germany has always been among the top EU trading partners of Bahrain, and the figures have been increasing over the years. We’re now at over EUR620 million in trade between Bahrain and Germany. I think this is a very good picture but we are sure that we can do more. We are obviously looking at the development plans of Bahrain in the tourism, financial and clean energy sectors, and trying to tap into the potential of German technology,” HE states. “As the Euro is currently very low, German products are cheaper than they have been in a long time, so we hope that this too will strengthen relations.” Germany is known worldwide for its highquality motoring brands which have become the most popular product imports. “I’m very glad to see that Bahrain is no exception to this trend and we continue to see very nice German cars on the streets here,” HE says. “While this is one of our main products, there are a wealth of other products that are less known especially in the industrial sector, chemical industry, steel industry, and in logistics. In terms of services, for instance, the company SAP lends their services here through a software which you may find at any bank or public administration office,” HE adds.

HIGHER EDUCATION Germany is known worldwide for its higher education programmes, which have the added benefit of free tuition for international students too. The German education system is largely based on public education with several public schools and universities across the country. “This is a specificity of the German education system that we cherish very much because it is also a contribution to social cohesion in our country,” HE says. “We also have private university but the standard of education is not lower at the public universities and hence many people opt for them.” Around 50 to 60 Bahrainis visit Germany to study every year with medicine and engineering degrees being a prime choice. In terms of international students, learning German is encouraged as most people speak the language and a majority of the university courses are in German although international curricula are also offered. “Those wishing to pursue an education in Germany are welcome to look into the German learning programme that the embassy organises. Students should also keep in mind that they need to graduate with a high school diploma which qualifies them for studying in Germany, and then apply for a visa in a timely manner, preferably months prior to when they intend to go to university,” advises HE. “Life in Germany is also comparatively inexpensive with low university fees which often includes public transportation, so we are positive that they will have a great experience,” HE adds. To conclude His Excellency expressed his gratitude towards Bahrain and its people for the warm welcome that he and his family have received. “This is something that I understand Bahrain is rightfully famous for - being a welcoming country. THE LEADING ACT

As one of Bahrain’s most talented actors and creative directors, Qahtan Al Qahtani is a hugely influential figure in the Kingdom’s film and television scene. Bahrain This Month sat down with him to discuss his earliest silver screen inspirations, his subsequent career and what advice he’d give to the next generation of budding movie stars.

“Back in the early Sixties, we were among the lucky families in Bahrain to have a television set in our old house in Manama,” he reminisces. “That was my first introduction to that magic box where I actually got hooked to see whatever was on, from Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck to the Western movies. These were broadcast on the only channel at the time, which was Aramco from Saudi Arabia. “One of my most vivid memories was seeing John Wayne walk into a saloon and order a drink. Obviously, this being on a Saudi channel and dubbed in Arabic, he asked for an ‘orange juice’. Can you imagine? “I asked my mother where I could get a frothy orange juice just like John Wayne’s, and she very diplomatically answered that it was only available in the West and not in Bahrain! “Ever since then, I wanted to be one of those 40 November 2022

cool people on the screen. Even at school we had a radio and I couldn’t wait for those times I could be sat in front of a microphone.” Mr. Al Qahtani’s performing career began with his graduation from the Higher Institute of Dramatic Arts in Kuwait in 1978, along with five other Bahrainis who were lucky enough to be studying in the same field. A stint as a school teacher teaching photography then followed, before moving to the Ministry of Education to run educational programmes and quiz shows on both, radio and television. His major breakthrough came in 1984 as he was assigned as Head of Production at Bahrain TV, a position he held until 2000 when he was made an Advisor for Theatrical Affairs at the Ministry of Information Affairs. After six years there, he resigned to become a freelance actor and producer for television,

movies and other projects. He is currently about to join the cast of a new drama series in Abu Dhabi amongst some of the most respected acting talent in the region, with filming set to take place soon. It is the latest in a long line of acting credits that he reflects proudly on. “As head of production at Bahrain TV, I was in charge of almost everything except the news,” he recalls. “This included big events such as GCC summits, GCC conference football games and basically anything major that was shown live. Not only that, but I pushed to show current affairs and drama programmes because I really felt variety was needed. It was work for 16 hours a day but so worth it. “The other thing that I really was so proud of was training people at that time. People of all backgrounds were working at Bahrain TV but www.bahrainthismonth.com

interview nobody was qualified as television personnel. I visited so many training institutes around Europe and in the Arab world and sent people to learn more. It’s amazing to see the people I invested in now working as directors, lighting, acting and almost every other facet of production you can think of.”

Something else Mr. Al Qahtani is immensely proud of is his children. His daughter, Zayn, is a renowned artist in the Kingdom and he reflects proudly on her carving her own path in a creative field.

Ultimately, though, he believes that the future of Bahrain’s production industry is very bright, with plenty of potential. “I am fully confident that Bahrain can be a hub in the Gulf as a production country,” he says.

“The other thing I will say is that if you become a well-known or even quite famous actor… be humble. Don’t ever think you’ve simply ‘made it’. Be nice with people and act like you would around your close friends and family. Acting is not just in front of the camera, but behind it too; you have to use the right language with people. You have to build up a character so people will pay you respect and they will admire you as a director and as a performer.”

“I always gave my children the choice to choose whatever they wanted to do without any hesitation,” he explains. “When Zayn was in kindergarten, she came out with a drawing of her hand on a piece of paper, and she had coloured in all of the fingers. I looked at it, told her it was lovely and then took it to be framed and hung it on the wall. Every morning she would see it and that’s how the love of art started with her. “She graduated as a fashion designer from the Royal University for Women and along the way she had done innumerable paintings and drawings of dresses. It was clear that the influence of fine arts was stronger than fashion itself and soon she started putting her drawings online and customers flocked to buy her paintings both from Bahrain and abroad.

“We have all the facilities that producers look for. We have the sea, we have palm trees everywhere. We have the desert. We have the wonderful mix of modern and traditional life. We have everything! Let’s make use of it.” As the elder statesmen of the industry in Bahrain, he has a tremendous amount of knowledge to impart on the stars of tomorrow. Motivation and drive, above all, are the most important qualities in his opinion. “I would firstly say: go and explore the world,” he says. “Go and do everything where you find

“She has exhibited in the UK, Saudi Arabia and was the curator of an online exhibition in Bahrain. She is now doing a Master’s degree from the Royal School of Art in the UK, which is amazing. “As I mentioned, I left her free to do whatever she liked, but the only influence I had on her career was to put one drawing on the wall,” he says graciously. Mr. Al Qahtani also owes a great deal to two other women in his life: his mother Moza and his aunt SakIna. He recalls: “They both brought me up together after my father died when I was very young. They dedicated their lives to educating me, sending me to university and they were always so proud of me. Both of these incredible women were actually pioneers in education in Bahrain, being headmistresses for schools since the 1940s. “I am so thankful for those two ladies; they inspired and motivated me throughout my life. Everything I learned was from them and I still learn to this day as I inherited their books and I am still reading through them and appreciating their words!” Both women have now sadly passed away. However, Mr. Al Qahtani has continued to use their inspiration and dedication to overcome obstacles in his professional life. However, no actor’s career has ever lacked challenges, and he has faced a fair few. “Television never stops,” he says. “Continuation is very important. TAKE TO THE SKIES

The Royal Air Force (RAF) Aerobatic Team, colloquially known as the Red Arrows, is one of the most iconic symbols of the UK’s RAF. The display squad, which has wowed millions of fans across the world with its manoeuvres, rolls and incredible synchronisation, comprises nine BAE Hawk planes and their pilots. The team is set to perform three awe-inspiring displays at the Bahrain International Airshow from November 9 to November 11, so Kristian Harrison sat down for a chat with Flight Lieutenant Patrick Kershaw, also known as Red 3, about the historic occasion and what it takes to become one of the ‘Reds’. Please could you tell us a bit about yourself and your background, and how you came to join the RAF? My introduction to flying planes came during my time obtaining my Business Administration degree at Leicester De Montfort University. I joined the East Midlands University Air Squadron whilst there and they sponsored me for my final year. I was then selected to join the RAF and do my flying training as part of the fast jets category. I passed my training then did four years flying the Tornado GR4, including operations in the MENA region, before becoming a qualified instructor on the Hawk T1. I was selected to join the Reds in 2021 as Red 3 and this is my 42 November 2022

first display season. I’ve been in the RAF for 16 years now and I feel immensely privileged that I’ll spend three of those flying with the Red Arrows before returning to other operational duties! What does it take to join the Red Arrows? Firstly, you need a great amount of flying experience and to rack up 1,500 hours in a fast jet. There are more than 30 applicants every year for very limited spots, and then these are cut further to around 10. There are then intense assessments, not just of your flying capabilities but also how well you work in a team, before final selection.

Have you been to Bahrain before and are you excited about visiting? I actually visited Bahrain very briefly in 2012 while I was taking a jet out to the Middle East as part of an operation, but that was just a brief stop at the Shaikh Isa Air Base. This time, we’re displaying over three days so I’m really looking forward to meeting some of the people that live on the island and getting out and seeing some of the sights and experiencing the country properly. Can you tell us about the logistics behind getting the Red Arrows to Bahrain? Despite some rumours to the contrary, we don’t ‘ship’ the Hawks abroad or even store them on www.bahrainthismonth.com

a larger cargo plane which travels to our destination; we do fly the actual jets themselves by ‘hopping’ from country to country to refuel. There will be six members of the crew flying in formation this time; throughout the UK summer air show season we had seven of the nine regularly flying, but unfortunately one has suffered an injury. He’ll still be coming out here but supporting from a logistics point of view. Regardless, we’ll have a fun, exciting show with lots of red, white and blue to put out over Bahrain with a series of thrilling moves and aerobatics. As always, we will do a practice display beforehand and complete a full reconnaissance of the area and plan it beforehand so we aren’t on the back foot trying to work it out while we’re there. Following on from this, how important are the wider Red Arrows crew, particularly the ‘Blues’ who are your engineers? It’s hugely important to recognise all of the support staff that help the Red Arrows fly. On the surface you just see the pilots and the planes, but there’s 120 people involved; we are officially called the RAF Aerobatic Team, but realistically the team is a squadron as big as some of the front line squadrons we have. It would be impossible to do as many shows as we do without the support. They truly are the unsung heroes. For example, the engineers will fill the planes with dye and service the jets while we’re being briefed. If we had to do it ourselves we’d have to cut our number of shows. person in the background, it’s the suit itself (and the plane of course) which represents the Red Arrows so we’re all just part of one big unit. There’s also the people planning the tour and dealing with all the logistics back in the UK, which really highlights how much goes into these events and how the RAF can organise something across the world. Let’s also not forget the people who help on the civilian side; the contacts at the embassy helping us sort the tour, the staff who process our jets on our stop-offs, the organisers of the air show and even the hotel staff who make our stay so comfortable. The Red Arrows are an iconic symbol of the RAF. How important do you feel you are as an ambassadorial force to represent the UK both at home and abroad? Hugely important! We showcase the RAF and its professionalism and expertise which is what the military do. After all, our motto is Éclat, a French word meaning ‘Excellence’. The ambassadorial role is huge as we represent the UK wherever we go and it’s a privilege to wear these suits for three years to promote the country, drive trade or to inspire anyone who has an interest in military and teamwork. The Red Arrows strive for excellence with trust and teamwork, and I believe these qualities can inspire people across the world. We do many talks in schools and on the ground at displays and it’s an honour to hopefully inspire children on behalf of the RAF. What’s your favourite manoeuvre and how do you say in such close synchronisation in the air?

To be honest, I really like the arrival because it’s the first time you appear at the site, coming from behind the crowd. You’re constantly looking at the leader Red 1 but you can also out of the corner of your eye see the crowd and their amazement as the heads turn. I like the barrel rolls and formations - every show is so much fun. We all take our reference from Red 1 no matter where we are in the formation, and everything is incredibly timed on voice commands so we turn at exactly the same time. If we reacted to him moving instead then our brains would have to process the reaction time and it could be dangerous. Finally, what does a Red Arrows pilot do during his downtime, both on and off tour? We all have good camaraderie among the team, so on tours we go out for dinner together or go to the gym. In fact, four of us came through the ranks together so we’re a tight knit team and have a lot of trust in each other. As for off tour, I don’t have a private flying licence but I still love planes, I can’t stay away! If I’m with my wife and we go somewhere with a plane museum, I always drag her there. My favourite story is that not long after I joined the RAF, we went to a museum and there was an exhibition featuring a flying simulator game which asked: ‘Can you be an RAF pilot?’ and she said I should try it as obviously I should do really well. Unfortunately a little kid next to me beat me and I was too embarrassed to tell him what my job was!

he Bahrain British Business Forum (BBBF) is delighted to announce that its annual charitable Poppy Ball is back after a three-year hiatus. The highlights of their visit will be laying a wreath at the Memorial Service to mark Remembrance Day and attending the Poppy Ball. The Poppy Ball is organised in support of the Chelsea Pensioners Appeal and the Mother and Child Welfare Society Bahrain. The society has been a leader in voluntary work in the Kingdom of Bahrain since 1953; and it has played a central role in the empowerment and uplifting of women and children in the kingdom.

Beginnings of Modern Healthcare in Bahrain, 1892 - 1942

When a young American, Samuel Zwemer, stepped onto the shores of Bahrain on December 7, 1892, he knew he wanted to serve the needy and to preach the gospel. However, he did not realise that the hospital he founded, and helped build, would continue to care for the community for nearly 120 years. In the first 40 years, he inspired many doctors including Dr. Sharon J Thoms, Dr. Stanley Mylrea, Dr. Paul W Harrison, Dr. Louis P Dame and Dr. Harold Storm to leave the comforts of

the USA to come and set up hospitals in Bahrain, Kuwait, and Muscat. Mr. Zwemer, along with James Cantine, the co-founder of the Arabian Mission, inspired many nurses, teachers and paramedics also to join them. Long medical trips were made by mission workers to Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and the coasts of the trucial states - which later became the UAE - in their mission to bring healthcare to all. Government health centres and hospitals opened in the region. But, until the oil boom in

the Arabian Gulf region, which arrived in the late 30s and early 40s, the local governments had largely depended on the mission hospitals for healthcare, for their people. The American Mission Hospital in Bahrain, with major changes in strategic management and with cutting edge medical technology, continues to care for the community. The ethos that the pioneers had, of course, remains unchanged.

Dr. Samuel Zwemer, the founder of the hospital, with his wife Nurse Amy Wilkes, and daughter Katherina, who was born in 1897 as seen in their first family portrait. Sadly, Katherina died when was barely seven years old, during a Cholera epidemic in Bahrain in 1904. She now lies buried in the Christian cemetery on Zubara Avenue, in Gudaibiya-Hoora region, with her younger sister Ruth, who had also succumbed to the same disease. Their deaths were just a week apart.

Opened in the year 1903, Mason Memorial Hospital was built under the leadership of Bahrain’s first modern physician-couple, Dr. Sharon J Thoms and Dr. Marion Wells Thoms, medical graduates of the Michigan State University, who arrived in Bahrain in 1900. Here is a picture of the hospital and the church is from the 1920s. Mason Memorial Hospital later became known as the American Mission Hospital, and the Church of Christ as the National Evangelical Church. The open space in front of the long wall is now the Muslim Cemetery.

ith a multicultural flavour profile and numerous indigenous products, Peruvian cuisine is quite special. So just the thought of experiencing Bahrain’s first authentic Peruvian dining experience was truly exhilarating. Located in the dazzling firelit surroundings of the Hotel’s Azure pool, Inti at Four Seasons is a new nightly pop-up led by Peruvian Chef Yovani Guevara. As part of our experience, we were to dine on the degustation menu and a selection of vegetarian menu items on request. True Nikkei cuisine in the form of a colourful selection of ceviche was the opening act for the evening. The unique platter featured the freshest of seabass, one served traditionally cold in a leche de tigre marinade of lime and quintessentially Peruvian aji peppers and the other grilled, aside from a mushroom ceviche. Slices of torched sweet potato and the pungent flavour of red onion further elevated the ceviche. Next, we savoured the Salmon Tiradito – a kaleidoscope of colours, textures and flavours. The thinly sliced salmon, heat of the Aji peppers, fresh diced carrots and delicate crunch of grains offered surprising layers of flavour with spicy, sweet and tangy notes teasing our tastebuds in waves. Unlike ceviche, tiradito is sauced immediately before service, as opposed to marinated. A colourful bowl of Salmon followed beautifully combining fresh salmon roe, salmon tartar, smooth mashed potato and avocado. The smoothness of every ingredient presented full bodied flavours which worked well with the crisp seabass skin. It was at this point in our experience that we were able to truly appreciate the attention to detail and finesse of their plating as every dish was a work of art. Moving to the mains, the Anticucho Carne featured delicious skewers of tangy beef tenderloin served with a side of Peru’s choclo, large kernels of corn which were ever so slightly spicy – the perfect accompaniment for a protein like beef. These were embellished with more of the delectable Aji sauce. Interestingly enough, Peru is known internationally for being the world’s largest producer of the nutritious grain quinoa. Through Chef Yovani’s innovation, this ingredient was innovatively incorporated in the menu. As part of our mains, we enjoyed a sumptuous bowl of quinoa with decadent cheese, cherry tomatoes and asparagus. This was followed by a wholesome rice dish laden with calamari, scallops, prawns and an assortment of fresh vegetables. Ending our meal in a universal fashion, we tucked into the tres leche. Most people are quite familiar with this dessert but what made Inti’s approach to it so unique was the surprising element of crisp quinoa and tangy mango sorbet – just delightful. Melt-in-your-mouth luquma with dulce de leche, a dollop of ice cream and fresh fruit was a sensational finish to the evening’s dining adventure. Needless to say, Four Seasons’ impeccable service and Chef Yovani’s visionary approach to using Peruvian ingredients made this degustation experience one to remember. So, naturally, the Bahrain This Month team was overjoyed on hearing that Origin Kitchen and Culture, located on the sixth floor of Hilton Bahrain, was launching its weekly ‘What’s the Catch: Seafood Night’. A chat with Executive Chef Ravneet Manchanda reveals that the culinary team aims to serve up the best of local catch to diners with nearly all the seafood being caught as early as 4am every Thursday. A vast majority of the seafood is local with the exception of a selection, such as lobster and salmon, which are not native to the Kingdom. Origin's live stations ensure that the selection of seafood is perfectly cooked according to guests’ preferences.

To whet our appetite, we tucked into a delicious bowl of Lobster Bisque followed by a selection of salads including a fresh mussel salad. The cured salmon, which was made in-house, was also quite delicious! Next, we headed straight to the sushi counter which had a fantastic selection of nigiri, maki and more. We found the crispy crab rolls, prawn tempura, spicy salmon roll and California maki to be particularly enticing. The freshness of the ingredients was evident and we appreciated the perfect balance of flavours.

dining review With a choice of safi, sheri, mackerel, seabream, prawns and more we were truly spoiled for choice at the live cooking stations. Thankfully, the staff are quite friendly, attentive and knowledgeable and were able to make wellinformed recommendations so we didn’t have to struggle. We put together a plate of seabream, prawns, calamari, salmon and Omani lobster. While all the seafood was beautifully prepared, we had a special appreciation for the fried seabream which was impeccable: light, crisp and flavourful. One of the most interesting live stations at the Hilton’s seafood night has to be what we would describe as a ‘seafood carvery’. Two majestically large seabasses were roasted and served with a selection of 15 diverse relishes and sauces! These were carved for guests on demand.

Aside from the bountiful catch, the culinary team went above and beyond to create much-loved dishes from a diverse range of cuisines. Pria Masson talks about the lifeblood of the economy and any organisation – money.

his weekend, I participated in Confluence – an exhibition where art and words combine. It’s not a connection easily made. In the exhibition there was one painting of a dolphin made with an array of dots which when seen from a distance it almost seemed printed. Yet, each individual dot, in the right place, is what made the picture of the dolphin so beautiful. It got me thinking about how we have become so accustomed to looking at everything from afar, that the dots and systems that make sure things look the way they do – are forgotten. So, this month’s article is all about connecting those very dots. And what is the connector? Money. Money is the lifeblood of any organisation. You need money to flow to be able to sustain your business. When there is a shortfall, you need to be able to request outside sources for an additional amount. Every business transaction , is related to money and involves the movement of money. Fintech and blockchain are entirely new systems in the way people interact with money. and convenient as possible – with the main aim of minimising the risk elements between the process of delivery of goods and services and receipt of payments of the same. One would think then, that the more money there is in the system, the better it will be. Sort of like the Keynesian theory of “dig trenches and fill them up” as a solution for unemployment. Only, now it would be “print money and solve problems”. However, why don’t governments do that? Because money, is a commodity. Not just that, it is a common commodity used to determine the relative value of every other product and service. If, there is too much of money, the paper value of everything goes up to an extreme point where money is left as “paper value”. That, in very simple terms – is inflation. A healthy body needs a balance, as does a healthy economic system. You need money or liquidity, that is enough to keep things moving. If it falls short, systems stop working. If it’s too high, systems stop to have meaning. Scarcity, at some end, is a requirement. Similarly, for businesses, problems are a requirement and

they create a balance and a goal. If there are no problems to solve, why do businesses even exist? So, the next time that you feel economic problems can be solved by printing money, or that your business would be so peaceful if no problems existed, stop and think. Money seems like it can make everything easier – and it can. But, money by itself, has no meaning. Its meaning is derived from a system. And you, as well as your business, are a part of that larger system. To access that system, you need to match the criteria laid out to create scarcity. Without scarcity, we would not need money to equalise value. Money can be magical. You just have to know, and recall, how its magic really works. CAMPAIGN TO BOOST DIGITAL FRAUD AWARENESS IN BAHRAIN The Corporate Communication and Marketing Committee under the umbrella of the Bahrain Association of Banks (BAB) held a meeting at the Bahrain Institute of Banking and Finance (BIBF) headquarters to discuss the executive plan of a national campaign to raise awareness of the various digital fraud targeting customers of financial and banking institutions. The campaign will be launched in partnership with the Central Bank of Bahrain, Ministry of Interior’s General Directorate of Anti-Corruption Economic and Electronic Security, Telecommunications Regulatory Authority and members of the association in the financial sector. CEO of BAB, Dr. Waheed Al Qassim, says: “The national campaign plays an important

role in keeping the Kingdom of Bahrain among the developed nations in the field of cybersecurity as a crucial pillar for progress in the development of digital banking services.” Corporate Communications and Marketing Committee Deputy Head, Nadera Abuali said: “Fraudsters are constantly developing their techniques which requires us to step up efforts to raise awareness of these techniques. BIC ICT AND DIGITISATION SENIOR MANAGER RECEIVES PRESTIGIOUS NOMINATION Bahrain International Circuit (BIC) ICT and Digitisation Senior Manager, Khalifa Al Ansari, has been honoured with a prestigious nomination at the International Conference on Artificial Intelligence and Digital Transformation. The event was organised by the International Group for Artificial Intelligence and UAE company Global Enterprise Channel (GEC) and held as part of The World CIO 200 Summit, Bahrain Edition, at The ART Hotel and Resort. FINANCIAL CYBERTHREATS TARGETING BAHRAIN BUSINESSES DROP BY 52 PERCENT Kaspersky’s recent Financial Cyberthreats report has stated that attacks are becoming increasingly corporate rather than consumer focused. According to Kaspersky Security Network, financial threat detections targeting businesses were growing in the Middle East in Q2 2022. Financial phishing aimed at organisations also stay high. Business-related financial threat detections increased nearly fourfold in the Middle East in Q2 – by 286 percent compared to the previous quarter. These detections are specific to Banking Trojans, which is a malware commonly used to steal data stored or processed through online banking systems, e-payment systems and plastic card systems. 66 November 2022

As for Bahrain, it saw a decrease by 52 percent in Q2 of 2022 compared the Q1 of the same year. Financial threats targeting businesses in Saudi Arabia and Qatar also witnessed a decrease in the same type of threats. According to the Kaspersky telemetry, in the first half of 2022, a total of 99,155 financial phishing attacks aimed at organisations were detected and blocked by Kaspersky solutions in Bahrain. Majority of them (82 percent) were targeting banks, while 10 percent were for online shopping outlets, and 8 percent were against payment systems such as PayPal, ApplePay and others in the country. www.bahrainthismonth.com

The second feature is the more kindly named ‘intelligent speed assistance’. This uses GPS as well as a built-in sign recognition system to detect if the car is going over the speed limit. If it is, the system will warn the driver and automatically slow down the car. However, the driver will be able to override this by pushing on the accelerator pedal.

Whether these new technologies work as intended (you could always ask someone else to breathe into the device for you, for example) remains to be seen, but the EC wants to cut

the number of deaths on EU roads by half (down to 10,500) by 2030. While current safety features are refined constantly, it’s a case of diminishing returns over the years as eventually they become so perfected and accurate that there is only the most minor room for error and attention shifts to new tools. Indeed, it is fun to speculate what might become standard over the next decade or so and, like with seatbelts, we might look back and wonder in amazement: “Why weren’t they around much earlier?” Take airbags for example. They’re fitted in every car now, but what about external airbags? Manufacturers are now looking at ways to use the same idea to help protect pedestrians and animals who may collide with vehicles by fitting airbags externally. Whatever technologies come to fruition in the future, let’s hope that we continue to drive the numbers of fatalities and casualties on our roads down.

The annual awards recognise compelling powertrain advancements that are all-new, or significantly improved. The IONIQ 5 was selected for its performance, charging capability, range and price. Hyundai has earned fifteen ‘Wards 10 Best Engines & Propulsion Systems’ recognitions since the awards’ annual inception in 1995. “With the introduction of our new E-GMP platform, the IONIQ 5 created new advancements in the automotive powertrain world with ultra-fast charging and Vehicle to Load two-way on-board charging,” said Director of

Electrified Propulsion Development at Hyundai America Technical Center Inc., Byungho Lee. According to WardsAuto Judge Drew Winter: “The IONIQ 5 redefines the modern vehicle, not only from the propulsion standpoint. The car creates a new, roomy interior space by taking advantage of all the things an EV platform doesn’t have.” The competition recognises outstanding powertrain achievement and powertrain teams for their ability to dial up more power, more torque and better efficiency. ROLLS-ROYCE’S FULLY-ELECTRIC SPECTRE UNVEILED In 1900, Rolls-Royce co-founder, Charles Rolls, prophesised an electric future for the motor car. Having acquired an electric vehicle named The Columbia Electric Carriage, he foresaw its suitability as a clean, noiseless alternative to the internal combustion engine – providing there was sufficient infrastructure to support it. In September 2021, Rolls-Royce confirmed that it had commenced testing of Spectre, the first Rolls-Royce to be conceived and engineered as an electric car. The transformative motor car will go through an exhaustive testing programme - a journey of more than 2.5 million kilometres, simulating more than 400 years of use for a Rolls-Royce. In unveiling Spectre, Rolls-Royce sets a new precedent in the creation of an entirely original class of motor car; the Ultra-Luxury Electric Super Coupé. On its completion in 2023, Spectre will represent a prophecy fulfilled. For the first time on a series production Rolls-Royce, Spectre is available with Starlight Doors, which incorporate 4,796 softly illuminated ‘stars’ and a nameplate surrounded by a cluster of over 5,500 stars. Spectre is also equipped with SPIRIT which will manage the motor car’s functions, while being integrated into the marque’s Whispers application, allowing clients to interact with their car remotely. Spectre is available for commission immediately, with first client deliveries commencing in Q4 2023. WHAT IS IT?

Overwatch 2 is a first-person shooter by Blizzard Entertainment. As a sequel to 2016’s Overwatch, the game intends a shared environment for player-versus-player (PvP) modes while introducing persistent cooperative modes. A major change in PvP modes was to reduce team sizes from six to five, which required several characters to be reworked.

GAMEPLAY

The game is a hero shooter, where players are split into two teams and select a ‘hero’ from a roster of 35 characters. Characters are organised into a ‘damage’ class, responsible for offensive efforts; a ‘support’ class, responsible for healing and buffing; and a ‘tank’ class, responsible for the team’s protection. Damage heroes now have an increased movement speed and Support heroes slowly regenerate, while Tank characters are more offensive.

GRAPHICS

The new maps are all well put together, with the traditional mix of winding streets and tight choke points that Blizzard has always implemented effectively into its arenas. They are all lovingly crafted, with art and sound working in harmony to create little details that build into charm-filled wholes.

Ice, Death, Planets, Lungs, Mushrooms and Lava Born out of jam sessions where the band went into the studio with no preconceived notions other than preselected tunings and rhythms, King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard prove yet again that they haven’t run out of ideas even after releasing more records per year than most bands do in a lifetime. It’s definitely not as directed as some of their concept albums; the main point seems to be getting loose and loud while delving into the vagaries of nature and their standby concern: global catastrophe.

Björk Fossora Verdict:

Another certified success from the icon.

What’s the story? Fossora was partially inspired by the 2018 death of Björk’s mother, Hildur Rúna Hauksdóttir; the songs ‘Sorrowful Soil’ and ‘Ancestress’ are about her, as well as how Björk dealt with her grief. The album was conceptualised during the COVID-19 lockdowns after Björk travelled to Iceland to record. Keeping with the album’s themes, its title is the ungrammatical feminine version of the Latin word for ‘digger’. The album features contributions from American singer Serpentwithfeet, Björk’s two children Sindri and Ísadóra, Indonesian dance duo Gabber Modus Operandi and bass clarinet sextet Murmuri.

Worth a listen? Björk’s tenth album is one of her best blends of the conceptual and the personal. Björk weaves these huge emotional milestones together into earthy, organic illustrations of the many kinds of love and how they’re expressed. On Fossora, love isn’t always soft: the album opener ‘Atopos’ shows Björk lamenting over jabbing beats, prodding clarinets and an army of backing vocals before concluding. On this soul-nourishing tour de force, her one-of-akind mix of innovation and emotion is as inspiring as it’s ever been over her decades-long career.

The Art of Survival Launching a late-era surprise attack with the towering The Art of Survival, Bush haven’t sounded so vital and hungry since their 1990s heyday. Tamar Leek, better known as Bahrain Barbie, has built a formidable fan base across the Kingdom and is one of the most popular performers in the area. She chats with Farrah Saville about her musical influences, experience recording an album and her love of Bahrain.

PEOPLE | interview Where did your passion for music start? I've always loved music and performance. However, in the beginning, I didn't think I could sing and was always too shy. I remember being in assembly in school and watching a few of my male classmates perform some rock songs by No Doubt on stage. They asked me before their performance if I would sing with them, but I was too scared to; I was bullied, and didn't want the bullies to pick on me further. After I left education, I entered ‘BBC1 Dance X’ - a nationwide TV talent show in the UK. I had to sing and dance as part of my audition, so I just had to pluck up the courage and go for it. As it turns out, I could sing and ended up in the top 16 out of 20,000 people that entered nationwide! So, the first time I sang in front of anyone was on national TV… that was certainly one way to get over my fear! Then, last year, I got asked to perform at a popular tribute festival in Bahrain - 'Tribfest’. They wanted me to perform as Gwen Stefani with a No Doubt tribute band. It was the most amazing show and the best feeling being able to perform the same song I was too scared to perform in school in front of hundreds of people. I thought: "If only those bullies could see me now!” Which artist are you inspired by most? Strong females inspire me with their talent, creative ambition, and great sense of style. My three favourite female icons are Gwen Stefani, Grimes and Nadia Lee Cohen. Musically, I am inspired by the band Deftones; and if I could steal anyone's voice, it would be Lacy Sturm from Flyleaf or Christina Aguilera. Your band, Reveries, recently launched your album ‘Change in the Retrograde’ in Bahrain; how was it received, and how was the support from the local community? It was a beautiful, fantastic recording brought to life by 4th Street Recording! I went completely over the top and extra on the launch party, in my usual style. This album is very dear to me and so I wanted to give it the love and attention it deserved. I had giant banners, red carpet, coloured lighting displays, cupcakes, a videographer and photographer to capture every moment. I hired a fantastic live band of session musicians to play the record out, replacing my original Reveries band members for the evening, who all live in Los Angeles. Outside was a giant life-sized Barbie box that attendees could get inside and have photos in with paparazzi lights flashing. I wore a red H of H custom-made latex-boned Dita Von Teese gown, which she wore on the red carpet. It was five inches too small for me, so I had to have two strong helpers get me into it, and I had to be driven horizontally www.womanthismonth.com

to the gig! The night was packed with all my friends, fans and supporting musicians. I was inundated with love and it was the best night of my life. I felt very proud of what I had accomplished with Reveries, but mostly I was in awe of the huge response from Bahrain’s community. What is the process like to record an album? When I was recording in Los Angeles, my band-mates and I spent many long days writing. We would try to find a rhyming word for what feels like an eternity, find the right synth sound or instrument to record with, or repeat vocals over and over to get the perfect 'take' of a chorus line. Mixing the record has a fine art too. Usually, I start with a melody in my head or a few words that I want the song direction to go in, and then I start building the sounds around that. If it's a happy song, it can be from a place of euphoric nostalgia or a dream-like fantasy. If it's a sad or heartfelt song, it usually comes from a more personal and vulnerable place, like you are reading a page out of a poetic diary. One of the ways in which your performances stand out is through your costumes. Can you tell us a bit about that process? My fashion and style choices are often based around extravagance and avant-garde aesthetics. I love structure and colour, and I like to create monochromatic looks that resemble a doll in a box with synchronised fashion and accessories. I wear human hair wigs because I frequently want to change my hair colour to match my look, like a chameleon. I work with tailors to design my stage looks from scratch. The whole 'Bahrain Barbie' nickname came from people commenting on my aesthetic. I would go past people in the streets of Bahrain and they would yell at me "Barbie!', or ask to take a photo with me. I decided to capitalise on that interest I was getting, and brand myself online as 'Bahrain Barbie' following which my social media following grew rapidly along with my content.

Can you tell us a little more about your performance troupe Dollhouse and your shows? Dollhouse includes myself and my two fabulous friends from 'Jeff Fit' - Malwina Zawislak from Poland and Isis Conde from Mexico. Both Isis and Malwina are incredibly talented dancers and choreographers with a strong business sense and imagination. Isis has specialist skills in belly-dance and costume creation, and Malwina in hip-hop and acting. They are the backbone that creates the dynamic production trio with me. We design everything from the costumes to the props, to the choreography in meticulous detail. Our latest project is an Arabic Infusion show for a new nightclub in Adliya. It's a blend of Arabic and Western music, with elements of Middle Eastern-inspired costumes and props. It will be my first time singing in Arabic, so wish me luck! What are your thoughts on the live music scene in Bahrain? I love the community here. They are like family to me. There's less of that 'dog-eat dog' attitude you get when living in a bigger country or city. We are always trying to help each other, supporting artists and bands where we can. However, I do think that since COVID, there has been a decline in valuing artists in Bahrain. Musicians are often underpaid, under-resourced, and undersupported. In addition, they often work with bad sound systems, a lack of sound engineer support and poor equipment installed in the venues. How did you end up living in Bahrain and how long have you lived here for? I flew to Bahrain in January of 2018 on a singing contract for 'Hear and Now Entertainment’ as the band manager and lead singer in a five-piece British rock band. When my contract finished, I flew off to New Jersey to work on my EP, but ended up flying straight back to Bahrain as there is a beautiful community of musicians here that are very supportive. We share our favourite looks from the innovative event which stood out for their attention to detail, impeccable design and overall vision. Multi-national partners, designers and an array of international media and leaders flocked to Dubai, UAE for the Fall Winter 22/23 Haute Couture and Spring Summer 2023 Ready-to-Wear season of shows which took place at the 21st Edition of the Arab Fashion Week. The spectacular six-day event was held in strategic partnership between the Arab Fashion Council and Dubai Design District (d3) from October 10 to October 15. The Women’s Arab Fashion Week was divided into three calendars: Fall Winter 22/23 Haute Couture, Spring Summer 2023 Ready-toWear, as well as a series of curated events, staged in the city’s art and fashion pulse of

d3. The fashion shows featured 35 different designers, representing 22 countries. The new and emerging artists from the UAE, the region and further afield took to the runway showcasing phenomenal designs, fortifying Dubai’s presence as a global fashion hub and international reference for the entire industry. The week was headlined by the one-of-akind collaboration between the world’s most diverse doll, Barbie, and the Lebanese couturier Jean-Louis Sabaji – the first Arab designer to work with the global icon. In a celebratory explosion of colour, embellishments and innovative techniques, Filipino designer Rian Fernandez ignites a new golden age. Known for his couture looks driven by a love for traditional Filipino artisanal craft, he once again constructs a wardrobe for a modern icon. Elaborate bodices, intricate weaving and sultry tassels embraced the female figure, cocooning the fall winter 2023 woman with the sort of unique flair Rian Fernandez is known for.

Dorota Goldpoint

Polish designer Dorota Goldpoint took the audience at d3 on a journey through Poland's meadows and orchards via a calming palette. Soft, yet bold, she illustrated the feminine spirit of self-aware and ambitious women, channeling femaleicons of yesteryear such as Greta Garbo, Coco Chanel, Marlene Dietrich, and Audrey Hepburn – all of whom achieved success in a male dominated world. www.womanthismonth.com

Michael Cinco

Rising like the mythical phoenix in the desert, Dubai-based couturier Michael Cinco unleashed a fall winter 2023 couture collection like no other. The Filipino designer who makes red-carpet dreams come true with every artisanal stitch and swathe of satin, once again proved that Dubai is a couture epicenter. Inspired by the ancient history and culture of Egypt, Cinco built looks that were deeply-rooted in the civilisation’s architecture, aesthetic detail and ancient scriptures. Couture looks were envisaged as architectural masterpieces, lavish in elements from the past. One of Latin America’s most prominent designers, Erick Bendaña brought the majesty of the Nicaraguan rainforests to the Arabian shores. In a couture collection marked by meticulously placed flora and feather applique, as well as upbeat red carpet looks emblazoned with indigenous spirited motifs and his ‘Arte Pop’ prints, his ‘Celestial’ collection infused the catwalk with a sense of escapism.

Showing in Dubai marks a new chapter for Turkish label Nihan Peker to captivate the couture-loving market here. At Arab Fashion Week, her ‘Golden Age’ collection shined a spotlight on the sort of high-end craftsmanship made possible by Turkish artisans and the Eurasian country’s rich heritage.

Kel by Elena Kondratova

The Ukrainian brand that prides itself on having revolutionized wedding and evening fashion, comes to Arab Fashion Week in search of new retail markets due to the ongoing war. But the ongoing turmoil at home didn’t stop its designer Elena Kondratova from injecting d3 with a potent dose of side slits, plunging necklines and modern goth bride details. Made by Ukrainian seamstresses and tailors, the Kel made a splash at Arab Fashion Week with its intricate accessories – warrior princess face masks fashioned with chains, sequined crowns and veils that conjured the mystery of a bygone era and history’s fabled female icons.

Iranian designer Mohammad Amin Pour Eskandarian’s everyday couture boutique in downtown Tehran visually conveys the everyday impact the Middle East’s crisis has on everyday life. At Arab Fashion Week, velvety, floor sweeping dresses fashioned with hoods and fanciful layers were crafted to facilitate a wide range of movement and activities. On an emotional note, the brand said that its embroidered sewing technique infuses each item with a tree-trunk feel, inspiring viewers here to contemplate the world, beyond the fashion industry.

Silk abaya-inspired ensembles awash in a palette of Arabian sunset- to-sunrise colors, sashayed down the runway to the tune of heritage soundtrack. The simplicity of the abaya came to the fore, consciously enhanced with sartorial elements like trench collars, fringe details and innovative textiles and prints like polka dot and architectural tile motifs.

POCA & POCA

Frills, fringe, and feathers were the playful elements that made POCA & POCA’s spring summer “Joy” collection captivating in both spirit and design. Created by Karolina Gniewek-Lewicka and co-founder Wiktor Gniewek, the Polish-made brand infused the day-five roster with a palpable dose of levity with every ruffle. Largely inspired by 50s and 60s fashion, voluminous dresses, blouses with open backs, jumpsuits, and trousers reflected a contemporary, yet timeless new look for a girl who knows how to have fun. www.womanthismonth.com

One would have to look closely to spot the tattooed motifs embedded within the Yassmin Saleh collection. A form of wearable art, the hand-designed artwork reflecting key issues of our time, has become the hallmark of the sister-duo behind the label. At Arab Fashion Week, eco-conscious goddess looks like flowing bohemian dresses and floorsweeping gowns adorned with organic prints conjured a sense of otherworldliness.

Death by Dolls

London-born, LA-educated Sara Al-Saud’s Death by Dolls runway injected the last day of shows with a Hollywood club vibe. The brand that has dressed megastars like Britney Spears and Beyonce returned to Arab Fashion Week with rule-breaking designs like barely-there bandeau tops and lingerie-inspired ensembles. A child of the punk 80s, Al-Saud continues to stand by her vibrant, bright colours, anything shiny and sparkly, intense textures, even among her more modest looks involving denim jackets and her hijabs.

Designer Furne One brought his own light to the runway of d3 through an innovative couture display of darkness. His fall winter 22/23 couture runway show featured an all-black cast of looks characterised by other-worldly-handmade embellishments, -- calling to mind the romanticism of vintage Indian costumery. Turbans, capes, feathered shoulders, and molded armor served as the hallmarks of this collection that pushed conventional barriers.

With an underground vibe and under the strobing lights of a dark parking lot, the sustainable athleisure wear brand The Giving Movement unfurled its FIFTYMADE© line. The lineup flowed into the night with an urban club vibe, culminating in sporty accessories including boxy totes, shiny hijabs for women and a sneak preview of the brand’s first-ever footwear collection -the Middle East’s first slides with bio-based sugarcane.

With its fall winter 2022/23 couture collection, Tamam Humariff drove its connection between the cultures of the Middle East and Russia even further in what came to the limelight as a regal wedding party. ne of the key messages I’m keen on conveying to my mentees of young professionals is to start building their personal brand early on.

According to Personalbrand.com, “Personal branding is the conscious and intentional effort to create and influence public perception of an individual by positioning them as an authority in their industry, elevating their credibility, and differentiating themselves from the competition, to ultimately advance their career, widen their circle of influence, and have a larger impact.” In simpler words, your personal brand is the way you define yourself to the public. It’s how you express what you stand for, it’s the approach you’re adopting to influence people and make your voice heard. Needless to say that the exponential explosion of Social Media (SM) contributed in one way or another in strengthening and accelerating the process of building personal brands – be it positive or negative. However, just to clarify, building your personal brand is not equivalent to being famous on SM – though it’s powerful, it’s just a tool/mean. In fact, it’s quite easy to become famous on SM in absolutely no time; the simplest way is to be awkward and provocative, doing awkward deeds and saying awkward words!

Here are three essential steps to building your personal brand: Laying the Foundation

To build your personal brand, you need to start by asking yourself some fundamental questions: Who am I? How can I define myself? How can I differentiate myself and stand out in the crowd? If there is one thing that I would like to be known for, what would it be? Who’s my audience? To which circles I belong? Coming up with answers to these questions will help you draw your roadmap and put milestones to eventually reach your desired destination. When you’re clear about where you stand and where you want to be, you know exactly what needs to be done to be there; it’s a transformational journey that requires SMART action plan to accomplish it. The plan could consist of three main elements: Knowledge, Experience, and Network. Under each element you can define a number of objectives and KPIs to monitor your performance.

Placing the Bricks

To start the building process, it’s essential to acquire the required knowledge, develop and improve the needed skills, bridge the gaps in experience, and grow the network. This can be achieved by leveraging different means: studying, reading, attending events/conferences, participating in voluntary activities, attending professional gatherings, posting, blogging, and seizing every single opportunity to boost your self-confidence – that also includes “dressing to impress”. Here are a few things to keep in mind:

• The more knowledge you accumulate, the more

confident you will be to voice your opinions and share your thoughts. This in turn will help you gain more trust from your audience.

• Acquiring knowledge has become easy with the

plethora of learning platforms and sources. What’s not easy is accumulating knowledge and building experience, for which you need to roll-up your sleeves and get your hands dirty by not only acquiring knowledge but applying it, maintaining/upgrading it along the way and defending it if required.

• To grow your network, you need to be present at first

– be it physically or digitally. Hijack the circles that are fit for your purpose, assess the value you’re adding and the value you’re gaining from these circles regularly.

As time passes, you’ll be able to observe how your horizon has widened, your network expanded and your views crystalised, and you’ll smoothly switch hats and look at things from different perspectives. You’ll be called by a friend of a friend of another friend to give advice and resolve matters where no alternatives are available! That’s how strong your brand can be.

Short Story At one of the recent events I attended, one of the attendees introduced me as “one with many professional qualifications”, the hidden message here reflecting how keen and passionate I am to learn new things! Is it something that I wanted myself to be known for? Absolutely. I’ve done the Gallup Strengths Finder assessment a few years earlier and “Learner” was my first strength. Was it easy to collect professional qualifications? Not easy nor quick; it took me 15 years of continuous learning, studying books, clearing exams, obtaining qualifications and applying/maintaining/upgrading the knowledge!

Maintain and Upgrade

Your roadmap, milestones and destination are not necessarily static, being dynamic and adapting to changes along the way is a vital part of the game. Sometimes you need to alter the roadmap, introduce and/or remove milestones. In fact, in some cases, you need to change the destination itself! Regular and ad-hoc assessments to your knowledge, experience, and network are essential to keep the ball rolling. What’s more, one of the young university students approached me once to conduct an interview and she said: “I was searching on Google for project managers in Bahrain and your name came up. It was the first in the list”. This wouldn’t be possible 10 years earlier, it took me time to build that reputation and be the first! Parents could definitely use some help when it comes to the piles and piles of laundry and dishes that accumulate and, luckily, kids who do chores are more successful as adults. It stands to reason that kids who grow up doing chores learn responsibility and develop a work ethic early on in life. They figure out how to get tasks done and realise that messes don't clean themselves, literally and figuratively. However, simple as it may seem, we may be so consumed with the other pressures of parenting that we underestimate the importance of asking kids to help out at home. It is our tendency as modern day parents to over-protect and over-direct kids, which impedes self-efficacy. Parents should re-think

and expand their definitions of success; it's not just about getting into a specific college, earning certain test scores, or assuming a certain career path. Parents can raise successful kids without resorting to over-parenting, and the earlier you start it the better. If kids aren't doing the dishes, it means someone else is doing that for them so they're absolved of the work and lose out on learning that each one of us must contribute for the betterment of the whole. Why is sweeping the floor and clearing the table so important to kids' well-being in life? Well, simply put - helping out around the house helps kids feel capable. Doing chores also helps kids feel like they're part of the team. Pitching in and helping family members is good for them and encourages them to be good citizens.
