Representing the German diaspora in Bahrain is German Ambassador, HE Clemens Hach, who outlines his plans to strengthen ties between our two nations. Money indeed makes the world go round, and in this edition, we delve into Bahrain's banking industry as we engage with industry leaders propelling the sector forward. As part of this feature, we spoke with Benefit’s Deputy Chief Executive of Business Development & Services, Yousif Mohammed Al-Nefaiei, to discuss the company’s successes and its future strategic goals.

Another interviewee is startup veteran and Tarabut Gateway CFO, Bahraini national Tariq Sanad, who clarifies the role of open banking in fintech development.

Meanwhile, Thabit Holding underscores its tailored portfolio and financial management solutions for enterprises, while Chartered Manager Eman Deabil talks about Green Banking.

In an exclusive interview with Bahrain This Month, the UK’s Minister of State in the Department for Business and Trade, Lord Dominic Johnson, discusses his role and the purpose of his recent visit to Bahrain.

Last, but by no means least, Turkish Ambassador, HE Esin Çakıl, sheds light on diplomatic and commercial relations between Turkey and Bahrain on the occasion of Turkey’s national day.

Bahrain boasts a phenomenal array of restaurants and eateries, and we're delighted to share our top recommendations. This month, we share our delightful experience at Go Bistro by La Table Krug – a pop-up restaurant at The Ritz-Carlton, Bahrain. If you relish brunch, you'll love the Four Seasons Hotel Bahrain Bay’s sensational Friday Brunch – a veritable feast.

In our motoring section, Kristian Harrison highlights Germany’s role in the world of cars. In the commerce section, Pria Masson discusses the role of ‘unit economics’ in running a profitable business.

You'll also find the best fashion inspiration, a travel checklist, and beauty recommendations.

Body safety is a delicate yet crucial topic that needs to be explained to children. Our parenting columnist, Ouiam El Hassani, tells us how to approach this with their well-being in mind.

Former Indian President Visit to Bahrain

Bahraint hismonth.com /gallery October 2023 15 bystander
A tribute to Bahrain awards ceremony was held at The Diplomat Radisson Blu Hotel, Residence & Spa by the Sree Narayana Community in the presence of Shri Ram Nath Kovind, the Former President of India.

October 29 officially marks 100 years since the declaration of the Republic of Türkiye. To commemorate the occasion, Bahrain This Month spoke to Turkish Ambassador to the Kingdom of Bahrain, HE Esin Çakıl, about her experiences in the Kingdom so far and the current state of bilateral relations between the two countries.

Your Excellency, what are your thoughts about Bahrain and its lifestyle?

Like Türkiye, Bahrain is historically a multi-national, multireligious country that has a rich mosaic of cultural diversity and encourages the value of tolerance in Bahrain and in the international fora as well.

Being a female ambassador in Bahrain, I would also like to emphasise and praise the Kingdom’s accomplishments on women’s rights. I believe Bahrain is an excellent model, especially for the wider region.

How would you describe the current state of bilateral relations between Türkiye and Bahrain?

On April 12 this year, we celebrated the Golden Jubilee of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Türkiye and Bahrain. Over the past 50 years, the relationship between our two countries has been significantly improved not only in the political field but also in the fields of trade, investment, health, defence, education, tourism and culture. I sincerely believe that the Türkiye-Bahrain relationship will continue to thrive over the next 50 years and beyond.

What are the current trade figures between the two nations?

According to the data of the Turkish Statistical Institute, our trade volume in 2022 reached USD883.8m, with a 66 percent increase being a new record. Türkiye’s exports to Bahrain in 2022 were USD215m, and the value of imports was recorded as USD669.1m. How does Türkiye collaborate with the Bahraini government and community?

In the field of education, we have a strong cooperation. The presence of Turkish academicians in respected Bahraini universities, the excellent works of the Turkish Language Centre, the Yunus Emre Institute in the University of Bahrain, the Türkiye Scholarships awarded to Bahraini students and the high interest of Bahraini youth in Turkish universities all combine to create an outstanding relationship.

The establishment of the Oncology Centre in the King Hamad University Hospital and the increasing number of Bahraini citizens who choose Türkiye to have medical treatment are promising aspects of bilateral cooperation in the healthcare sector.

As the Embassy, we support the connection between Turkish and Bahraini youngsters. For instance, for two years we have facilitated a youth exchange programme, Unlimited Youth, between Denizli Youth Centre and the Good Word Society.

16 October 2023 Bahrainthismonth.com interview

In 2022, we hosted more than 98,000 Bahrainis in our country and for the last two summer seasons, Türkiye was the primary tourism destination of Bahrainis.

We believe that having the opportunity to experience culture is one the most important aspects to building a strong and long-lasting friendship between countries.

As the Ambassador of Türkiye, I am grateful for the sympathy and interest of Bahraini people towards Türkiye and that the people of Bahrain’s knowledge about the history and culture of Türkiye opens diverse areas of cooperation between the two countries.

Can you highlight any recent joint projects that have had a significant impact on bilateral relations?

In the last 20 years, seven major projects worth USD1.1b have been undertaken by Turkish contractors, including the extension of the Bahrain International Airport by TAV and the ALBA Line 6 expansion project by GAMA. We are proud that they have been successful in delivering their promises in a timely manner, taking part in the Kingdom’s 2030 Vision. Recently, the Turkish GETAS Company signed an agreement with the Ministry of EWA which foresees a USD60b investment to Bahrain’s renewable energy sector, an area we believe holds great potential.

What opportunities do you see for future collaboration?

We have great experience in agriculture, industrial production, construction and healthcare tourism, in which Turkish expertise should be shared with Bahrain.

The potential is immense, with the help of increasing B2B contacts, we aim to improve our economic ties and cooperation in fields of trade and investment.

Are there any specific initiatives or agreements in place to strengthen the economic ties between Türkiye and Bahrain?

Currently, Türkiye and Bahrain have several agreements ranging from economic, industrial and technical cooperation to customs and mutual encouragement and protection of investments. The ongoing negotiations of the Joint Economic Committee also cover all areas of economic cooperation between Türkiye and Bahrain.

Both countries have signed and ratified the Organisation of the Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Trade Preferential Agreements which is one of the most important projects of the Economic and Commercial Cooperation” (COMCEC) to foster intra-OIC trade.

Furthermore, supporting the promotional activities of Turkish companies and exporters associations including participation in trade fairs to be held in Bahrain, and organisation of trade/buyer delegations that facilitate trade between Türkiye and Bahrain benefit both countries’ private sector stakeholders.

From October 10 to October 13, a general trade delegation from Türkiye will visit Bahrain with a focus on food, construction, personal care, furniture, household items, machinery and spare parts, textile, telecommunications, education and consulting in order to explore business opportunities and collaboration.

How does Türkiye view the strategic importance of Bahrain in the region?

Türkiye does not see the stability and security of the Gulf region as separate from its own stability and security. As the hosting country of an international coalition, the Combined Maritime Forces (CMF) which Türkiye is an active member of, Bahrain’s contribution to the joint efforts to preserve the safety of

international maritime navigation and secure international trade and energy corridors is essential.

Can you please tell us about the involvement of Bahrain during the natural calamity that took place in Türkiye earlier this year?

Under the leadership of HM King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, our solid friendship demonstrated itself during one of the biggest natural disasters of the century that hit Türkiye on February 6.

The Sawaed Al-Gaith search and rescue team’s memorable efforts, urgent humanitarian assistance provided by the Royal Humanitarian Foundation and the Bahrain Defence Force, and volunteer support given by the citizens and residents of Bahrain will be remembered forever.

Is there anything you’d like to add?

I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate Turkish citizens residing in Bahrain on the 100th anniversary of our Republic. I would like to thank them all for representing Türkiye adequately by exerting their efforts in the best manner, in line with the values of Türkiye.

In the first century of Türkiye, guided by our enduring objective to achieve “Peace at Home, Peace in the World” as set out by the founder of our Republic, Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the Turkish nation has been built as a modern, democratic and prosperous country which dedicated itself to work for a peaceful, secure and just world for benefits of the all.

As laid out by our President, HE Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, the Turkish nation will crown the second century of the Republic with the Century of Türkiye which is the comprehensive roadmap that will raise Türkiye above the level of contemporary civilisations.

FOSTERING BUSINESS RELATIONS

The UK and Bahrain’s historical relationship has long been built on strong foundations of cooperation and diplomacy. Last month, Lord Dominic Johnson of Lainston CBE visited Bahrain for high-level talks as part of his role as Minister of State in the Department for Business and Trade. He sat down with Kristian Harrison to discuss his role and purpose in Bahrain.

What exactly does your role involve and what have you achieved so far?

The business department is really focused around making sure that we have a strong business base in the UK with a focus on economic growth. My job as Minister for Investment is to showcase the UK as the best possible place to invest anywhere in the world and to make sure that the transactions are facilitated.

Furthermore, I also aim to get Whitehall to look at its activities through the lens of the investor. How can we become more attractive to business investment? How can we facilitate companies investing in the UK by making the rules and regulations as smooth as possible to encourage great international companies to come into the UK, build their businesses and hire people?

What are the greatest challenges you have faced?

First and foremost, we live in a competitive world. 20 years ago, the UK was in a very strong place because very few other countries were truly competing in terms of trying to attract international investment. Now, if you look at what’s going on in the United States with the Inflation Reduction Act and what the EU is doing in terms of offering subsidies and support for inward investment, we have to make sure that we compete. As well as ensuring we are above the competition, we need to guarantee that

our domestic regulations, access to the grid, skills, funding and so on are absolutely the best they possibly can be.

What is your purpose for visiting Bahrain?

To showcase the best that Britain has to offer and to follow up on the strategic investment partnerships that we’ve signed. I’ve met with Bahrain’s finance and commerce ministers, some key sovereign wealth funds based in Bahrain and the highlight for me, truly personally, but politically and economically too, was meeting the Crown Prince and Prime Minister, HRH Shaikh Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa; he was extremely generous to give me a great deal of time to talk through how we can build on the accords that we’ve signed and look at practical ways in which we can benefit each other’s economy through financial services.

What is the current state of the free trade agreement between the UK and Bahrain?

Currently, the UK’s FTA is under negotiation with the GCC and that’s very important for us as it is worth nearly GBP40 billion of trade between the GCC and the UK, putting the region in the top ten in terms of trading partners. Bahrain has played a very important role in promoting the fundamental values of the agreement.

What are your impressions of Bahrain in general?

It’s wonderful and welcoming. The cordiality and generosity which I’ve met today is just exceptional. To be welcomed personally by the Crown Prince for me really says a huge amount about the importance that’s placed on our relationship and the personal courtesy given to me was an unforgettable experience.

What advice would you give to you young people who are pursuing a career in politics and diplomacy?

Get involved, play your part and make a contribution. Whether it’s local politics, national politics, participating in the civil service or just promoting our strong alliances through something like the British Chamber of Commerce. Participation is key and if you feel you have something to give, then give it.

Bahrain Germany in

Celebrating Diplomatic and Commercial Relations between Germany and Bahrain on October 3, 2023.

REPRESENTING GERMANY

Bahrain and Germany enjoy a long-standing diplomatic partnership stretching back more than 50 years. As part of our Germany in Bahrain supplement, Bahrain

This Month spoke to the German Ambassador to the Kingdom of Bahrain, HE Clemens Hach, about his diplomatic career, his first year in the Kingdom and his plans to bolster ties between the two nations.

What are the main accomplishments you have achieved as the German Ambassador to Bahrain in the past year?

The first year is always a year of learning, of getting to know people, of listening, of trying to understand the country and the region. So, if I have succeeded in something, it’s to have gained a better understanding of this country and being in a position to better explain to my colleagues in Germany about Bahrain and hopefully correct some of the misperceptions that continue to exist in Europe.

Could you tell us about the current state of diplomatic relations between Germany Bahrain?

We have excellent relations with a strong bond between our Ministries and our respective Embassies. We have yearly political consultations and a range of high-level visitors from both sides. the Manama Dialogue and various highlevel MPs in Bahrain for the International Parliamentary Union with very good bilateral meetings on the margins. Finally, former Prime Minister Armin Laschet was here in February in support of the normalisation of relations with the State of Israel.

How many German nationals currently reside in Bahrain? What are the key sectors they are involved in?

According to latest figures, we have around 400 Germans residing in the country. Part of them work in the Eastern Provinces of Saudi Arabia, but for those in Bahrain, there are a few in the medical sector, the hospitality sector in management positions, teaching and banking.

What are the current trade figures between Bahrain and Germany?

We have a stable trade exchange at around USD700 million, with a growing number of exports from Bahrain to Germany, especially aluminium. We are also seeing more interest on the German side in petrochemical products which will be produced by the new refinery in Sitra.

What initiatives or programmes are in place to promote cultural exchange and cooperation between the two countries?

We have approximately 200 Bahrainis studying in Germany, and we also have German courses in Bahrain organised by the Embassy that have around 400 participants a year. Of course, we pursue numerous cultural initiatives too. On October 17, we will have a German band called JinJim performing in the framework of the International Music Festival. We will also have an interesting German jazz band, Sweet Simones, performing at the Jazz Fest in November.

We’ve also had an interesting development in the sports sector, with a Bahraini agency organising a trip of Bahraini football players to train in Germany with German clubs, something that we hope will succeed and bear fruit.

Can you discuss any advancements made in the areas of education and skills

development between Germany and Bahrain in the past year?

We have had some preliminary contacts between the German Agency for Technical Cooperation and the relevant institutions in Bahrain, to better understand where Bahrain is going in terms of skills development and training, and where German experience can be useful to the Kingdom.

What steps have you taken to promote sustainability and support Bahrain’s efforts towards renewable energy during your time as the German Ambassador?

We have a very good relationship with the Supreme Council at a technical level regarding this matter. We also had a very interesting exposition and panel discussion on energy transition at the University of Bahrain earlier this year, which helped us share experience and define areas of common interest and need for action.

We also have very good cooperation at the political level, for instance with the regular participation of Bahrain in the Berlin Energy Transition Dialogue and of course in the various international forums on climate change.

How has the first year as the Ambassador for Germany to Bahrain been? What has changed since you were first appointed?

It has been a fantastic year and we have been incredibly well received. It’s been a beautiful year for me, my family and as a professional. I’m very grateful for the reception and the opportunities we have in this bilateral relationship.

It has been a year of many changes. Of course, with the second year of the Russian war of aggression on Ukraine, it is provoking huge changes in Europe. But the region is also incredibly dynamic with the reintegration of Syria into the Arab League, the thaw in relations between Saudi Arabia and Iran, and the incredibly dynamic development of the relationship of the GCC with Israel. So, a lot of interesting and challenging developments are happening, which all contribute to keep the life of a diplomat very interesting!

Have there been any challenges you have faced in your role and how have you overcome them?

I guess the main challenge is really about some of the misperceptions that there are in Europe about this region and possibly also in this region about Europe. So I guess our work is really about trying first to thoroughly understand and then to explain the realities of our countries to the respective audiences and act as an interpreter between the two worlds.

Looking forward, what are your plans and goals for the upcoming year and how do you envision strengthening ties further? Aside from the cultural events mentioned earlier, I also have a couple of priorities that I have set myself to further develop the relationship. In the economic sector, I want to see more trade and engagement, and we will have a strong German presence in the Health Fair in December with a high-level visitor from Germany, which will be a good opportunity for the medical and health sector. We will also have a high-level delegation at the Manama Dialogue again.

One area of particular interest to me, and something I have been working on over the last year, is to increase the German participation in the Combined Maritime Force that Bahrain is hosting and that is ensuring maritime security in the Gulf and Indian Ocean. And I think we are on track to contribute additionally mainly through measures of training.

Do you have anything else to add?

I am grateful for the opportunity to say a few words about our priorities here as an embassy in Bahrain, and I’d like to extend my thanks to our friends and partners in Bahrain, in the Government and in the business community, who have supported us in our work and made us feel so welcome.

GERMAN-MADE SUSTAINABILITY

Germany is home to one of the most advanced environmental technology markets worldwide, with new legislation creating new opportunities for investment. With a global trade share of 14 percent in 2020, German GreenTech products are especially sought after.

In 2016, the markets for environmentallyfriendly energy generation, energy efficiency, resource efficiency, sustainable mobility, sustainable water management, waste management and recycling accounted for 15 percent of German GDP. This is expected to increase to 19 percent by 2025.

Growing Markets: Water and Recycling

The circular economy and the sustainable water industry are expected to experience annual growth of more than five percent and six percent respectively – reaching a joint market volume of EUR110 billion by 2030. Within the sustainable water industry, water efficiency – with expected annual growth rates of almost 40 percent until 2030 –represents the segment with the highest growth. With an estimated annual increase of almost 15 percent for the period 2016 to 2025, the market for recycling technologies offers the fastest-growing opportunities in the circular economy and waste management markets.

Germany has been promoting renewable energies since the 1990s. The Energy Transition is leading to electricity predominantly coming from regenerative sources as Climate Protection is a top priority for Germany.

A future in which nature and the climate are protected, fewer people suffer from hardship and social cohesion is maintained – these and others are the objectives being pursued by German Government through its Sustainable Development Strategy, whereby the focus transcends national borders.

Rapid action is required, as the international community has set itself a deadline. In fact, the Federal Government passed a Climate Protection Act to this end in 2019, which was amended in 2021; according to this: “Germany is to achieve greenhouse gas neutrality by 2045.”

In electricity production, Germany aims to raise the share of renewables to more than 80 percent in 2050, while completely phasing out electricity production from nuclear power plants and charcoal plants. Greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions would be cut by at least 80 percent by 2050.

The level of ambition of the Federal government for the ‘Energiewende’ (Energy Transition) has dramatically increased with the new coalition elected in 2021, the share of renewables to be reached in the power

mix by 2030 being set at 80 percent (against 47 percent in 2022). Germany has set an economy-wide emissions reduction target of at least 65 percent by 2030 and at least 88 percent by 2040, compared to 1990 levels. The country aims to reach climate neutrality by 2045 (five years earlier than the EU target) and achieve negative greenhouse gas emissions after 2050.

As a sample what all is possible is the Volkswagen city of Wolfsburg which has again topped the rankings in a recent survey of Germany’s most sustainable cities, based on a mixture of ecological, social and economic criteria.

Important challenges remain, however: waste disposal, pollution from the agriculture and transport sectors, to cite a few priorities at national level; and regional pollution and climate change at international level.

Another great sample supporting Zero Emission by 2045 is the DGNB (Deutsche Gesellschaft fuer Nachhaltiges Bauen = German Sustainable Building Council) which is a non-profit participatory association and Europe’s largest network for sustainable building: Founded in 2007 and is now the number two worldwide, with more than 2,000 member organisations.

Initiatives in all sectors and level are striving together to achieve the ambitious goal of the German Government to reach Net Zero by 2045.

Germany in Bahrain
Germany has long been known for its visionary developments in the fields of technology and automation. However, the nation is a leader in other fields that have grown to be crucial for the whole worldsustainable technology and renewable energy.

MONEY MATTERS

Banking has been proven to be one of the oldest industries in the world with its origins being traced back to 2000BC. This month, we highlight Bahrain’s modern day banking and finance sector and highlight key players in its recent developments and steady exponential growth.

The Middle East has long been known to be an avid supporter of industry development, with banking being amongst its advancing sectors. The Kingdom of Bahrain’s banking institutions and exemplary services have played a pivotal role in the development of the region’s banking sector and emergence of Bahrain as a leader in the field. In fact, Bahrain’s banking system consists of both conventional and Islamic banks and is the largest component of the Kingdom’s financial system, accounting for over 85 percent of total financial assets.

According to the Central Bank of Bahrain, as of September 2020, there is a total of 376 financial sector institutions in the country including 31 retail banks, 62 wholesale banks, 17 branches of foreign banks and eight representative offices of banks. These also include 34 insurance companies, 53 investment business firms and 86 specialised licensees.

The banking sector has played a pivotal role in the emergence of Bahrain as a leading financial centre in the region. As of July 2020, banking sector assets stood at over USD212 billion, more than five times the annual GDP of Bahrain.

FINTECH LEADERS

Since it was established in 1997, the BENEFIT Company has revolutionised the financial sector in Bahrain. Kristian Harrison sat down with BENEFIT’s Deputy Chief Executive of Business Development & Services, Yousif Mohammed Al-Nefaiei, to discuss the reasons behind the company’s successes and its future strategic goals.

How much influence do you think BENEFIT had as a pioneer of financial technology in the Kingdom?

We are very proud that Bahrain ranks second globally in real-time payment adoption, according to Global Data reports that highlights the tremendous development of real-time payments globally. BENEFIT’s RealTime Payments Scheme Fawri+ has enabled a significant increase in the adoption of realtime payments during 2020.

BENEFIT has grown hugely and last year had 252m total transactions and 1.3m users. What do you attribute this success to?

The widespread usage of our services shows that it is a valuable commodity with our customers, and we expect numbers to grow even further this year. BENEFIT is attached to people’s daily needs and lifestyle with its convenience, ease of use and fast service.

How much has BENEFIT’s policy of Bahrainisation helped it to achieve its success?

Bahrainis are well-known to be hard-working, especially when it comes to Fintech, banking and technology. These fields are attractive to people in Bahrain and BENEFIT has an obligation to enhance our talent in that area. More than 92 percent of our employees are Bahraini; the importance is not the number though, but the quality and the talent they possess.

What are BENEFIT’s strategic goals, both in the short and long term?

We would like to assure that our strategy is aligned with the national directions under the guidance of Central Bank of Bahrain (CBB). We cannot separate our goals as they are both integrated. Our strategy always focuses on four main principles; the first being the infrastructure of payments and elevating by introducing more innovative payment tools. Secondly, we are focusing on enablement of digital transformation by introducing a set of APIs to help banks and government

institutions to digitise their processes. Thirdly, we want to enhance the business side of the organisations dealing with us, developing intelligent tools to boost their revenues. Finally, we want to enable innovation, creating more artificial intelligent tools and becoming distinguished when it comes to offering service through data and technology.

What does BENEFIT do for the Bahrain community through its Corporate Social Responsibility programmes?

BENEFIT’s CSR policy is attached to our ESG goals and recently we have contributed in four main areas. In education we co-operated with a local university to boost their Fintech and data science programmes. In technology, we worked with University of Bahrain to build a state-ofthe-art lab to focus on artificial intelligence and cloud computing. On the environmental side, we are very proud to work with the National Initiative for Agricultural Development, and where healthcare is concerned, we sponsor advanced medical equipment.

How seriously does BENEFIT treat matters of cybersecurity and what strategies are in place to improve or safeguard the interests and finances of its customers?

Being a national critical system infrastructure operator puts a lot of pressure on us but we are compliant with a number of international schemes. We do a lot of red teaming and exercising of crises and disasters. When it comes to innovation, our first question is always how secure it will be and how robust our defences are.

Anything more to add?

We are currently working on boosting our R&D through the acquisition of Bahrain Fintech Bay (BFB), and collaborating with them on different initiatives such as hackathons and studies.

I believe BENEFIT should continue its role and obligation whilst it continues to boost the electronic payments ecosystem and introduce more data hub AI models. Most importantly, we should lead by example and maintain our leadership both in the region and globally to ensure Bahrain stays at the forefront of the Fintech industry.

THINK BIG !

Bahraini entrepreneur, financial professional and startup veteran, Tariq Sanad, has a host of notable achievements to his name. In his current role as Chief Financial Officer at Tarabut, Mr. Sanad is honing his skills to further propel the company that is set to be a key player in the realm of Fintech.

He tells Farah Baig about his career, the role of open banking, and the MENA region’s standing in the world of Fintech.

“I grew up in Bahrain, and studied here too, a fact that I’m extremely proud of because people often ask me if I’ve done anything otherwise. I think it just shows what we’ve been able to do in Bahrain,” says Tarabut CFO, Tariq Sanad.

The trailblazing Bahraini has led a successful career in the region, and played a leading role in the development of wellrecognised startups in the region. “A littleknown fact about me is that I started my career at Gulf Air, straight out of university, although I only stayed there for a few months,” states Mr. Sanad.

In 2003, he moved to the UAE and joined the multinational consumer goods company Procter & Gamble where he took on various roles over the course of nine years. “I believe that really was my second schoolworking with a big Fortune 500 company and running businesses valued at above a billion USD,” he says.

Becoming An Entrepreneur

It was after his substantial start in the corporate world that he would discover his knack for entrepreneurship. “After my time at Procter & Gamble I invested, as an angel investor, in the company Lime & Tonic. This was how I got into the entrepreneurial spirit and met with the founders of Careem which led to me being one of the very first people at Careem,” he says. “It was a great journey where we really took an idea from infancy to a great success within the startup ecosystem in the region — something I’m very proud of.”

Prior to being appointed at Tarabut, he served as the CFO of Pure Harvest Smart Farms, a sustainable agribusiness which notably was one of the highest-funded startups in the MENA region with USD387 million in funding. “It was a very interesting experience trying to grow fruit and vegetables in our climate which is one of the harshest in the world,” he says.

“I think I’ve found my niche with companies that have raised significant amounts of money, reached their series A where their concept is proven, and tried to get them to scale up and really mature,” he adds.

He was then given the opportunity to join the Bahraini startup, Tarabut, and work very closely with its founder and CEO, Abdulla Almoayed, who had established the company in 2018.

“This was an offer I simply couldn’t refuse as it brings me back home,” he says enthusiastically. “I’ve been appointed as the CFO at Tarabut, but if you get into the entrepreneurial space, you have to be a jack of all trades and have a bit more of a pragmatic approach to solving problems because that’s really what entrepreneurship is all about,” he says.

banking Bahrainthismonth.com 32 October 2023

Exploring Open Banking

He joins Tarabut following the company’s recent USD32 million Series A fundraise and will focus on further institutionalising the company and supporting its expansion in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. “Tarabut and Abdulla are both champions of open banking in the region. In fact, we were one of the first Fintech companies to recently receive an Open Banking Certification from the Saudi Central Bank - SAMA,” he says.

Open banking is pegged to effectively enable the Fintech ecosystem to thrive while allowing banks to cater to a larger number of customers. “This enables processes such as lending to be more streamlined as all of the information is aggregated to make decision making extremely fast and secure – the intent and concept behind open banking,” he adds.

To illustrate, he explains one of the solutions the company is providing to a partner in Bahrain. “We’re enabling them to provide loans within a couple of minutes as opposed to a whole two-week period of providing everything,” he explains.

“We’re essentially facilitating the connectivity and the ability of all of that information to be provided pretty much instantly, without paperwork but with the security provided through verification. I think a solution such as this which takes people through processes this quickly is one way of helping customers,” he adds.

As far as open banking’s capabilities go, he believes that they are, in essence, only at the tip of the iceberg. “I believe that there’s massive room for growth, but unlocking that is obviously going to include having to face challenges that you haven’t had to before. And I think that’s the beauty of it, right? Personally, I thrive on the idea of looking at a problem and trying to find a solution for it,” he says.

What About Security Concerns?

The open banking solution is highly regulated and there are incredible amounts of protocol and compliance requirements put into place. “It’s not an industry that is unregulated and governments are very intense in ensuring the protection of consumers, and we are enabling that as well,” he states.

Through open banking a consumer also has fewer points of contact, and therefore with fewer interactions, leakage of information is not as easy. “You’re interacting directly within a secure environment. Now, all companies are exposed to security concerns. I don’t think that anybody takes that away

from you, but with all of the requirements of compliance that we have in place and the fact that we’re highly regulated, I would believe that people would find comfort in that,” he says.

Fintech in the MENA Region

“I definitely believe that the MENA region is a thriving area for the Fintech industry. We’re a region where banking is still not accessible to a considerable part of the population,” he says, adding that it presents an opportunity.

Governments in the region have been supporting the Fintech industry in order to enable the development of financial services and to empower the unbanked to be banked in ways that are convenient, fast and secure. “We also have Islamic Banking within the different types of banking products, which has been championed in this part of the world, and rightly so. Fintech has an opportunity to further develop the sector,” he says.

He explains that the MENA region is also home to a very young population with a high adoption rate compared to other parts of the world. “We are looking for services and growth. If you’re thinking of finding a place for you to come in and develop, this is the right place for it. And we see it in a very active Fintech community in Bahrain, Saudi and also the UAE. Therefore, all of this support is going to grow this ecosystem. And for fintech… this is the time,” he says.

On a More Personal Note

When it comes to feeling rewarded, Mr. Sanad believes it is twofold: the financial success of the company and the impact. “And it’s not just about the impact on consumers, but on the people that have worked with me throughout the journey. Seeing the people that you interviewed or mentored, at the start of their career, being C-suite members of different startups, and venturing into different industries is part of a legacy that is very fulfilling,” he says with a smile.

As for the youth in university or entering the fintech ecosystem, he shares this advice: “Think big! One of the reasons that Abdulla has inspired me is that he thought big. Bahrain is a great place to kick off, but don’t let the borders be your restraint. Think of a big problem and try to solve it because that’s what the opportunity is – in having a greater impact. So, be excited about it, capture a big problem and solve it. That’s where success lays.”

DECODING ‘GREEN BANKING’

In her two articles published in Woman This Month , Chartered Manager Eman Deabil (DipESG, PfMP, IPMO-P, SIP) spoke about the rise of sustainability and ESG, and how these topics became the talk of the town. She also spoke about the evolving role of the Chief Sustainability Officer (CSO). In this article, she sheds light on green practices in the banking industry.

Green Banking or Sustainable Banking

Sustainability is the need of the hour, there’s no doubt about it. What most individuals do not realise is that sustainability practices can go well beyond one’s home and be implemented at large organisations too.

The practices adopted by banking institutions to promote environmentally friendly and socially responsible initiatives. This involves integrating these practices into the conventional core banking activities, such as lending, investment, credit and risk management, to make it greener or more sustainable, and hence to create a positive long-term impact.

Here are nine steps which organisations can take to move towards green banking:

1. Promote green investments: Encourage and prioritise investments in sustainable products, renewable energy, sustainable infrastructure, and environmentally friendly projects. This helps drive sustainable development and reduces carbon emissions.

2. Implement responsible lending practices: Assess the environmental impact of potential borrowers by checking their published ESG/ Sustainability reports and scores granted to them by rating agencies (e.g., Sustainalytics, Refinitiv), provide preferential rates or incentives to the ones have high ESG scores or engaged in sustainable practices.

3. Reduce paper usage: Streamline processes, re-engineer the processes and promote digital documentation and automated workflows. Organisations are encouraged to opt for electronic statements, digital signatures and online transactions without jeopardising the security of private information.

4. Promote energy efficiency: Implement energy-saving measures in bank facilities, such as optimising heating and cooling

systems, using energy-efficient lighting, and encouraging employees to power off electronic devices if not in use.

5. Establish employee eco-consciousness: Promote sustainable practices among employees, such as reducing waste, recycling, optimising existing resources, using energyefficient equipment, offering car-pooling if possible, and allowing them to work-fromhome to reduce their carbon footprint when commuting.

6. Foster green partnerships: Collaborate with other banks, financial institutions and organisations that prioritise sustainability practices.

7. Opt for sustainable procurement: Support sustainable suppliers by acquiring goods and services in a manner that considers environmental and social factors; this might involve evaluating the entire product lifecycle from sourcing to disposal.

8. Engage in corporate social responsibility: Participate in community initiatives that

focus on sustainability, such as tree-planting, beach clean-ups, educational programmes, care programmes for the elderly and support programmes for orphans.

9. Promote better governance: Provide transparent reporting on the bank’s sustainability efforts, maintain independence, and promote diversity and inclusion, ensure data privacy, establish stringent internal controls and encourage whistleblowing on wrongdoings. This helps build trust with stakeholders.

DBS Bank, headquartered in Singapore, was named the World’s Best Bank 2022 by Global Finance, and the World’s Best Bank 2023 for Corporate Responsibility by Euromoney. Here are a few interesting examples on the green practices incorporated by the bank:

DBS Home and Living Marketplace: This product was developed in collaboration with Singapore Green Building Council (SGBC). If the customer wants to renovate his/ her home by using sustainable infrastructure and appliances, the customer is entitled to enjoy more savings since the requirements of the green renovation checklist are being fulfilled. It also enables the customer to install green energy infrastructure such as solar panels by applying for the green renovation loan.

DBS Live Fresh Card: This ecofriendly credit card is made from 85.5 percent recycled plastic – and gives the holder an additional five percent Green Cashback on selected eco-eateries, retailers and transport services. The holder can buy green labelled products and enjoy discounts on the

orders made with DBS card. This will contribute to reducing food waste.

Go Green, On the Go: DBS customers can cut down carbon emissions by choosing cleaner types of transport, they can select car-sharing via the partnered vehicle car sharing platform, and the first-month subscription fees will be waived.

To conclude, sustainability is an ongoing journey; seeking opportunities to improve banking practices will certainly have a positive impact on the environment and society. There are numerous ideas that could be embraced, thinking wholly and holistically by engaging different partners could help in defining more innovative ideas. We are all responsible for creating a better and a brighter world for the future generations.

AN EXCEPTIONAL BRUNCH

Brunch is a Bahrain institution and there are none more vibrant, bubbly and bountiful then at the Bahrain Bay Kitchen. Immediately upon arrival, the restaurant made sure to deliver that carefree Friday feeling by focusing on dishing out delicious food, providing constant care and entertaining guests. Every whim is answered, keeping smiles glued onto faces and sounds of laughter echoing throughout the chic and airy restaurant. Considering the sheer number of options on offer, can you blame anyone for having the time of their lives?

I was seated nearby the sliding doors that lead onto the breathtakingly beautiful terrace and I used my vantage point to weigh up my options.

The problem I always have with brunch is not knowing quite where to delve in. Do I start with the fantastic array of crunchy and crispy salads, or do I plough straight into the delicious carvery?

The answer, surprisingly, was neither. Whilst not my usual choice, I felt like broadening my horizons and so delved headfirst into the extensive sushi section, featuring California Maki, Shredded Crab, Cucumber Rolls and more.

I am glad I did as each piece was packed with a sensation of flavours, especially when paired with a touch of wasabi and soy sauce. The texture was just right and if I didn’t already know I had a review to write and so had to try everything else, I’d have happily just grazed on the sushi

all afternoon.

Alas, the meat corner is what attracted my gaze and so I went over with plate in hand. I piled on the slow roast beef brisket and lamb leg, BBQ sausages and grilled steaks (with jus and mushroom sauce of course!) as well as some BBQ spare ribs which were incredible. Alongside some mashed potato, leafy greens and zesty veggies, it was a feast for the ages. I didn’t stop there either. For those looking for a touch of local cuisine, there was a Middle Eastern station with a selection of shawarma, an Italian section with pizzas and pastas and an Indian display with a variety of curries and hot naan straight out the oven. The Dahl Makhani in particular was absolutely incredible and worth going back for alone.

All the while, the friendly team were on hand to bring my choices of beverages, of which there are numerous options to wash the food down with.

As impossible as it seemed, I had to make room for the expansive suite of desserts, always one of the best aspects of brunch. These were simply fantastic too. My personal favourite was the Crème Brûlée, with an amazing crispy surface hiding the creamy goodness underneath. Speaking of the latter, the fruit-laden Panna Cotta was a delight, too.

I also heaped Honey Cakes, Cherry Chocolate Cake, Blueberry Cheesecake, Tiramisu, mousses and more on my plate. I barely had room for the selection of pastries, but I had to try. Had to, for the purposes of informing the public of course!

On the way out, stopping at the chocolate fountain and the ice cream cart for a final helping of sweet goodness and to stomp my feet to the wonderful live duo performing both modern and classic hits, I promised myself I would soon have to come back for more.

The Friday Brunch at the Four Seasons Hotel Bahrain Bay’s picturesque Bahrain Bay Kitchen is renowned for its upbeat atmosphere and exciting fare. This month, Kristian Harrison was invited to check it out and put it to the taste test.

A GASTRONOMICAL TRIP TO FRANCE!

The Ritz-Carlton, Bahrain’s 14 lounges and restaurants never fail to impress diners in the Kingdom. Farah Baig discovers the hotel’s pop-up restaurant, Go Bistro by La Table Krug, which serves heavenly French food right here in Bahrain.

Over the years I have had the privilege of dining at some of the very best restaurants across the Kingdom, and with each experience the hypothetical bar has been raised even higher. This month, I wished to savour the unique flavours that could only be found at a carefully curated dining venue – the sort of experience that you can expect at The RitzCarlton, Bahrain.

Nestled just by The Ritz-Carlton, Bahrain’s marina is Go Bistro by La Table Krug, a unique pop-up concept which serves up divine French cuisine. The bistro is nestled in the hotel’s transformative space which has been home to several successful pop-up concepts. We had a quick and enjoyable ride to the restaurant on one of the club cars and were thrilled to take in the spectacular setting.

dining Bahrainthismonth.com 38 October 2023

After being seated at one of the tables and briefed on the concept, we were presented with an avocado-based amuse bouche which changes from time to time. A pleasant surprise for diners. This was followed by a basket of freshly baked bread accompanied with butter and flaky sea salt. The mini baguettes and unmistakable mushroom cake, with a generous spread of butter, served as a delightful start to the experience.

We were soon served two entrees: Poulpe Grillé, Salade de Tomates and Tartare de Saumon These were a treat for the eyes and the palate too. The Poulpe Grillé boasts a delightful combination of tender and firm textures. The meat was supremely tender with a harmonious fusion of smokiness, umami, and natural sweetness while the outside was slightly charred, adding an appetising visual appeal to the overall presentation. We relished each bite with some delicious chimichurri, rich butter garlic sauce and the fresh tomato salad. Tangy pickled onions served as a flavourful surprise. The Salmon Tartare, too, was phenomenal with the right balance of Scottish Salmon, dill, avocado slices and a tangy citrus dressing. Glistening pearls of caviar and saffron tulle added exciting full-bodied flavours to this dish. It was melt-in-the-mouth perfection.

The experience had already impressed us but we were in for a treat as Chef de Cuisine, Alexis Knecht, who specialises in extraordinary Provencal cuisine, and his culinary team rolled up their sleeves and plated the mains. Three distinct mains: Gambas À L’armoricaine, Risotto Aux Champignons and Suprême De Poulet Au Foie Gras, would soon be ready to entice us.

First came the phenomenal Gambas À L’armoricaine which combines delicious tiger prawns, bisque, rosemary and gnocchi. Following a generous pour of the flavourful bisque, the plate was a colourful work of art as for the eyes and the tastebuds too. The luxurious prawns along with the pillowy-soft gnocchi was just sensational.

Next came the Suprême De Poulet Au Foie Gras a layered dish which consists of supreme

chicken, a generous slice of foie gras, mushroom tartine and potato puree. The aroma of this dish alone was enchanting with the distinctive scent of truffle but the intricate layers of flavours were near addictive. The chicken is flawlessy cooked, and goes beautifully with the foie gras and mushroom tartine. It’s one of those dishes that effectively demonstrates the culinary team’s gastronomical prowess. You just know you’d want to savour it again, and find yourself craving it soon after your meal is over.

If I had to pick just one word to describe the Risotto Aux Champignons, it would be this –authentic. The plate is enriched with the finest of field mushrooms and mascarpone cheese making each spoonful just creamy goodness.

As we waited for our dessert, we sipped on a handcrafted Bistronomique mocktail and admired the restaurant’s elegance. The space is dimly lit and decorated with eclectic artwork, and velvet and gold accents. Everything about it, including the gentle music in the background, makes it the ideal setting for a family dinner, catch up or a date with its beautiful ambience. In fact, the team has effectively created an elevated French bistro (with a twist!) on the island. Close your eyes and you are right there… in France.

We enjoyed two intricate sweet creations with full bodied flavours: Mousse Au Chocolat and Crème Brûlée. The dark chocolate mousse was truly remarkable but I must say I thoroughly enjoyed the Crème Brûlée. The audible crack of its almond pistachio biscotti was music to my ears, and I relished its many textures and different layers of sweetness.

I have to mention the restaurant’s wonderful hospitality team that made this a truly memorable night with their impeccable service and genuine warmth. The Ritz-Carlton, Bahrain prides itself in curating phenomenal dining experiences for visitors, and this experience in particular lived up to the expectations of being upscale. This was certainly a bistronomique experience that I enjoyed, and one that you will too. I’ll certainly be returning with even more company.

UnitEconomics

Business 101

Establishing a business starts with an idea but continues with a plan. Business expert Pria Masson explores the concept of ‘unit economics’ and its role in establishing a profitable business.

Iwasrecently talking to a client, and she told me about how she wants to replicate a certain app experience from another country. The reason was that they had so many followers, so much social engagement etc. My response –“Do you know if they are profitable?”. More sales are not the same as more profits. More likes are not more money and more social media popularity is not the same as more business. Business, is, was and always will be about the money. And money is about profits. What are profits about? Usually, controlling your unit economics. Let’s dive in.

How do you build a business plan?

The foundation of a good business plan lies in the ability to view the business from the perspective of a single variable. This variable or ‘unit’ could be a customer, product, service or other factor for which it is possible to calculate the costs and revenues associated with its sale. For example, if I am working with a hotel, I will break it down to ‘per room’ with a restaurant it will be ‘per seat’ with a school its per student and with an app it can be per customer.

Why is this process so powerful?

Because, usually, based on a single variable, the project can be easily understood and managed. How? Think about this, if one can break

down profitability to a single variable, choosing what products stay, what products need to be marketed more, which products make the most business sense, etc.; it all falls into place. This comes with surprises often, such as, the most selling product may be the largest contributor to losses.

Why do you need it?

For any business, it is vital to have control over the product economics. This is more critical if you are a startup. At the early stages, understanding the economics of each unit is a game changer. For instance, it can help you understand if your minimum viable product (MVP) itself is financially sustainable. If it is not, what happens when you add in the ‘frills’? Each addition to the product comes at a cost which usually needs to have an attributable value attached to it. In other words, your costs and value must reflect in the price a single customer is willing to pay. Scalable, is when a larger volume of customers is willing to pay a profitable price for each unit you are producing.

What about initial unit losses – they are inevitable are they not?

Yes, initial unit economics are not always profitable. However, that is only when those products have shared resources attached to them. For

instance, if the bulk of your initial cost is real estate or cloud space or even delivery infrastructure, then, as you scale up, the per unit cost attached to each product will decrease. However, keep in mind, there is a minimum number at which the unit will break even. Your aim is to put a timeline at achieving that minimum number. Or else, the losses will snowball.

What does it all mean?

It means something very simple, do the maths. Always. There is no substitute for the maths. Numbers do not lie. If you are telling yourself that numbers do not tell the whole story, that’s your first red flag. Act, calculate and act again – measure to control. If you’re in it to make money, you have no other route.

It underlines our unwavering dedication to sustainability and sound business practices across the capital markets. We recognise the importance of sustainability, and believe that ESG is a strategic opportunity that will enhance credibility in the marketplace.”

Since January 2020, Bahrain Bourse has taken the responsibility of driving ESG agenda by rolling out the ESG Voluntary Reporting Guideline for listed companies and by actively engaging in efforts aimed at encouraging ESG Disclosure across listed companies.

In addition, Bahrain Bourse released its first Sustainability Report in May 2020, providing a comprehensive summary of the exchange’s sustainability strategy. The report is aligned with Global Reporting Initiative (‘GRI’) principles and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

ASRY NAMED PARTNER OF SUSTAINABILITY FORUM MIDDLE EAST

Sustainability Forum Middle East has announced the Arab Shipbuilding and Repair Yard Company (ASRY) as a Forum Partner for its second edition which will be held on January 9, 2024 in the Kingdom of Bahrain under the patronage of the Minister of Oil and Environment, Special Envoy for Climate Affairs, HE Dr. Mohamed bin Mubarak bin Daina.

This year’s forum, again supporting regional decarbonation, will focus on ‘Achieving Net Zero –Pathways to Accelerating Implementation’. As a partner, ASRY will help further the Forum’s aims of promoting action on the part of private sector companies to achieve net zero.

Senior representatives from ASRY will join more than 500 expected attendees at the forum in January comprised of senior decision makers from across sectors and specialists in sustainability. The programme, which will

focus on highlighting solutions for accelerating regional decarbonisation, will feature a number of keynote addresses and panels made up of government and business leaders and climate experts. Together, they will examine national and regional net-zero commitments and the critical role of the private sector in achieving them.

GULF AIR GROUP HOLDING STRENGTHENS MANAGEMENT TEAM

With the objective of supporting the growth of Bahrain’s aviation sector, Gulf Air Group Holding (GFG) has strengthened its senior management team led by Gulf Air Group Holding Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Jeffrey Goh.

An experienced IT and Digital Management professional, Ahmed Naeemi, joins the group from the Bahrain Institute of Banking and Finance as Chief Technology Officer in September 2023. Mr. Naeemi is set to spearhead technological advancements and cutting-edge solutions in line with the Group’s business ambitions.

According to a survey conducted by Protiviti Member Firm for the Middle East Region, a mere 21 percent of the organisations in the region have effectively established a data privacy programme. The report highlights the difficulties organisations face as they transition from design to implementation stage during a data privacy programme.

As per the report there is an increase in privacy programme implementations across GCC countries with 56 percent of respondents highlighting regulatory requirements as the primary driver along with the need to maintain consumer trust and contractual obligations as the other important driver.

However, findings indicate a lack of coherence in data privacy implementation initiatives, as the responsibility and ownership for the programme are dispersed throughout the organisation. Merely 27 percent of organisations have dedicated data privacy departments, while 40 percent assign data privacy as the primary responsibility of the information security department.

The report urges organisational leadership to establish clear privacyoriented roles, responsibilities, and governance structures and prioritise budget allocation for data privacy programmes. Protiviti Managing Director of Security and Privacy Practice, Niraj Mathur, comments: “A generic approach to privacy does not work. Organisations need to consider their business context, current state, existing capabilities, and risk appetites while strategising their data privacy programme. Any gaps during implementing can have a lasting impact due to stringent legal penalties and reputational risk from loss of customer trust.”

An exceptional financial leader with a proven track record, Adnan Hashim, has been appointed as Chief Financial Officer, and will be playing a pivotal role in driving the Group’s financial strategy, business planning and operational growth. Given her proven track record of HR across diverse companies, Sawsan AlMutawa has been appointed Acting Chief People Officer, and will be instrumental in nurturing leadership, improving productivity, and optimising efficiency within the Group.

The management team is poised to drive the company’s strategic vision of advancing Bahrain’s economic agenda whilst bolstering its position as a global aviation industry leader.

MASTERS OF MOTORING

When it comes to automotive excellence, few countries can rival the rich engineering heritage of Germany. Renowned for their precision, innovation and luxury, German cars have consistently set high standards in the automotive industry. Kristian Harrison takes a look at how German automakers have set the benchmark over the years.

Germany and motoring are two institutions which are practically inseparable. In fact, many would argue that Germany is the cradle of the modern-day car industry, with a reputation as one of the most innovative in the motoring domain. In 2022, it had the sixth-highest total motor vehicle production worldwide, with six million models made per year by a labour force of more than 850,000 people.

Germany’s story with motoring began right at the beginning. The first ever motor car in the world, aptly named the Motorwagen, was invented by German engineer Karl Benz in 1885. Appearing like a horse carriage, he developed and patented his invention, the fourstroke internal combustion engine, in 1886. Soon Benz developed a better model running on gasoline and went for its commercial production in 1887. The vehicle was launched on the market a year later and was an instant hit. In 1888, Benz’s wife travelled 65 miles in the car to see her ailing father. It drew public attention and soon Benz’s car began to be sold in Germany and France.

In the early 1900s, several German marques came into existence. While Benz Sons dominated the market, Opel produced its first German car in 1906 and became the first German manufacturer maker to set up a mass production assembly line. In 1935, Opel was the first company to cross 100,000 vehicle productions in a year.

In 1937, a new state-owned automobile company created affordable yet speedy motors connected by autobahns across Germany. Its name? ‘Volkswagen’ – or ‘The People’s Car’ –and specifically the iconic Beetle, which still to this day is the second highest-selling car of

all time. These days, the wider Volkswagen Group is now the world’s largest automaker accounting for 40 percent of all vehicles sold.

Whenever the phrase ‘luxury cars’ is uttered, it’s almost impossible to not think of the titans of Germanic engineering. The likes of BMW, Mercedes, Audi and Porsche immediately spring to mind.

Audi, established in 1910, became the first German car company to exclusively focus on vehicles with powerful engines. Its earliest models Sport-Phaeton and Type B and subsequent six-cylinder models had more powerful engines than their contemporaries. BMW originally began as a company making engines for aircrafts. Indeed, the company’s famous blue-and-white logo actually represents a spinning propeller.

It was only after World War I that it pivoted into automobile production, reverting back to constructing engines during the Second World

War, before again reinventing itself and entering the car market in 1959, focusing on its ultraluxury sedans and the sports car segment.

Furthermore, Germany also has a storied history with racing. Audi has achieved great success in endurance racing as manufacturers at the Le Mans 24 Hours and as far as individual talent goes, Michael Schumacher, Sebastian Vettel and Nico Rosberg’s 12 combined Formula One world championships.

Above all, German cars are renowned for their efficiency and resilience. A stereotype it may be, but with cutting-edge technology, exceptional reliability and a national mentality that demands quality, it’s a deserved one.

THE ONE MILLION MARK

Luxury car manufacturer Genesis has achieved a major milestone as it officially surpassed one million cumulative sales, just under eight years since it launched. It is now seeing its sights on sustainable growth through its industry-leading EV vision paired with plans to open unique brand experience spaces around the world.

The Korean marque announced that as of September this year, it had sold 1,008,804 units in the global market, including 690,177 units in its homeland and 318,627 units overseas. It’s a significant achievement for the brand which launched in November 2015 and only hit the half-million mark in May 2021.

“Genesis has been taking audacious steps to create original experiences and values for customers since launching, achieving remarkable growth along the way,” says Mike Song, Global Head of Genesis. “Our brand will continue to build distinguished luxury experiences that have never been seen before.”

Starting with the introduction of the Genesis G90, Genesis has successively launched the G70, G80, GV70 and GV80.

At the core of Genesis’ remarkable success lies its unwavering commitment to delivering unique customer experiences. This includes offering a comprehensive model line-up renowned for its best-in-class quality, creating original brand experience spaces and providing meticulous customer care.

Guided by its distinctive design philosophy of ‘Athletic Elegance,’ Genesis has introduced models that can be characterised by their bold designs and outstanding performance.

Since introducing its first-ever vehicle, the G90, in 2015, Genesis has continually expanded its portfolio spanning sedans, SUVs and electric vehicles. The current lineup includes ten models, comprising five sedans, two SUVs and three electric vehicles.

Furthermore, Genesis builds and operates an array of brand experience spaces in more than 50 locations around the world, including Genesis House, Genesis Lounge and Genesis Studios. These spaces are designed to offer luxurious experiences and services, allowing visitors to engage with the vehicles and immerse themselves in diverse cultural experiences that reinterpret Korean aesthetics and traditional values through a modern lens.

Genesis has garnered a series of accolades from prestigious global and European entities to cement its reputation as a reliable luxury brand, including a variety of MotorTrend Car and SUV of the Year, Car and Driver 10Best, and North American Car of the Year awards.

Meanwhile, Genesis is continuing its efforts to be a leading brand in the EV era in line with the electrification vision it announced in 2021.

From 2025, every vehicle Genesis produces will be purely electric, backed by plans to diversify its manufacturing plants for electric cars to meet the expanding global demand for electrification.

To actively compete in North America, where EV competition is fierce, the brand’s electric vehicles with a new platform will be produced at the Hyundai Motor Group Metaplant America (HMGMA), a smart factory in the US which will begin operation from 2025, along with the Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama (HMMA) plant where the electrified GV70 is currently produced.

For the mid-long term, Genesis plans to review more solutions for effective electric vehicle production in response to global demand, considering factors such as global strategies, regional government policies and component infrastructure.

Along with its transition to a full EV lineup, the brand is developing plans towards achieving the goal of carbon neutrality by striving for innovation in all value chains of the brand, including raw materials, parts and production processes.

Genesis plans to add new vehicle models with best-in-class quality to its existing lineup as well. The new GV80 Coupe and updated GV80 will be launched this year, while a new model in an entirely new segment will also be added in the near future.

TEST DRIVING THE NEW PORSCHE PANAMERA

Shortly before its launch, the new Panamera is completing its final test drives. It has been confirmed that the world premiere of the new Panamera will be held at the Icons of Porsche festival in Dubai on 24 November 2023 at a special event, with the new model on display to festival attendees on 25-26 November 2023.

In Barcelona and its environs, the engineers are checking the final details of the new model generation. The sports saloon has already completed the majority of the test procedures, during which the four-door sports car demonstrated its qualities on four continents. For example, tests in the US checked the drivetrain performance at high altitudes and low oxygen levels, or verified the performance of the engine-cooling system and the air conditioning in extreme heat.

In Scandinavia, the Panamera was driven at very low temperatures; in South Africa, it mastered difficult road conditions; and in Asia, the high air humidity and hours of stop-and-go traffic in megacities posed particular challenges for the overall package.

During the test drives, the last finishing touches will be made to the new Panamera before its world premiere. Porsche is presenting the third generation of the four-door sports car at the Icons of Porsche Festival in Dubai on 24 November 2023. It will be on display for festival attendees on 25-26 November 2023.

Carly Rae Jespen

The Loveliest Time

Verdict:

A consistent, ambitious album of positive pop.

What’s the story?

The Loveliest Time is the seventh studio album by Canadian singer Carly Rae Jepsen. It serves as a companion piece to previous album The Loneliest Time, featuring songs from recording sessions for that album. Her creativity was stimulated by the COVID-19 pandemic, prompting her to transform an old office space in her Los Angeles residence into a home studio. The recording sessions produced over 65 B-sides, which Jepsen decided needed to be put forward for a new album.

Worth a listen?

Jepsen has got a song for just about every kind of love: With its skipping rhythm and breathy vocals, Weekend Love lives up to its name. When shouting from rooftops isn’t enough, there’s Stadium Love, where she backs the head-over-heels choruses with arenasized beats and a sizzling guitar solo. Though Jepsen is known for her songs about love at first sight, she’s getting her groove back on the disco of Shy Boy, one of The Loveliest Time’s brightest highlights. She balances gorgeous, heart-tugging pop songs with more daring moves and the result is a fresh-sounding mix of hiphop-tinged beats, spiky guitars and saxophone.

The Chemical Brothers For That Beautiful Feeling

The 10th album from the Chemical Brothers is all about moments of dancefloor euphoria, when the music elevates the club-goer into a state in which anything seems possible. This is familiar territory for the Grammy-winning duo, and the record delivers the type of festival-sized rave psychedelia they mastered back in the 1990s. While the pair have always crafted journey-like albums with continuous listening in mind, the singles are often the highlights, and For That Beautiful Feeling was previewed by several tracks that deliver concentrated doses of the sort of bliss the set intends to create.

Sigur Rós ÁTTA

ÁTTA – Icelandic for ‘eight’ – is Sigur Rós first album in 10 years. Inspired by the idea of unity in the face of overwhelming turmoil – climatic, socio-political, viral, and otherwise – the persistently warm and majestic, nearly hour-long ÁTTA often resembles a series of ambient, gradually expanding and subsiding, amorphous sound shapes more than songs. While not the project’s most mind-bending or boundary-pushing album, it’s their most stunningly gorgeous, and a successful, timely countermeasure to the symbolic cover art depicting a rainbow in flames.

Alice Cooper Road

Threaded together loosely as a concept record about life on tour, on stages, and in perpetual motion, Road finds Alice Cooper half a century into his weird and fantastical rock & roll nightmare but sounding fresh and invigorated as ever. Always the showman, Alice uses Road to bring the on-stage power of his band’s live show to record, with songwriting contributions from various members of the group and a gritty production style that has a live-in-the-studio feel. Though they were recorded in the 2020s, moments like the winkingly self-aware opener ‘I’m Alice’ or the sleazy riffage and pounding backbeats of ‘Welcome to the Show’ could pass for vintage Alice Cooper.

whites, rich chestnut, chocolate brown, terracotta and cinnamon brown take our wardrobe straight into Autumn. Farah Baig explores the best of Bally and ETRO for some inspo.

The weather is finally cooling down in the region, and with the onset of October’s anticipated pumpkin spice lattes comes another exciting factor – the changing of wardrobes. We’re ready to put away our bright summer fits and step into fall with much-loved seasonal hues, beautifully interpreted by big fashion brands.

This month, we’re particularly enticed by the evocative FW23 collections of the renowned brands Bally and ETRO. Let’s explore the brands’ runway collections; we’re sure you’ll find inspiration, and perhaps even some of these fits in your closet very soon.

ETRO Fall/Winter 2023

ETRO’s creative director, Marco De Vincenzo, creates a compelling dialogue with the FW23 collection. The roots of ETRO are in fabric and print: tartans, cravatteria motifs and, of course, paisley. All of it comes back this season framed by a new sense of precision, by a psychedelic proclivity for sharp cuts and the rhythm of patterns.

Things come together instinctively, as long billowy dresses are paired with droopy, chunky knits, and androgynous trousers and vests are mingled with silk blouses. Tailoring is tall and precise, in opulent fabrications. Necktie motifs swarm on enveloping coats with contrast prints on the inside. Denim pants peek-a-boo, hinting, indeed, at a radical look. ETRO being a whole world, elements of home furnishing are borrowed, with blankets wrapped on light dresses.

Fringes dance along the hem of chunky polos and scarves, while applique gives argyle knit a three-dimensional charm.

BALLY Autumn/Winter 2023

The collection was unveiled in a parade winding through the corridors and gardens of a historic Milanese residence. The collection celebrates a modern take on the masterful Swiss craftsmanship of leather goods and accessories that stretch back to the mid-19th century.

A strong, elevated silhouette for women merges tropes of Hollywood past and present. Ready-To-Wear statements for day and night reflect the bygone grandeur of Da Vinci’s Casa degli Atellani, as its dark wood balustrades, scrolled ironwork, mosaic floors and opulent marble fireplaces create a rich dialogue with the season’s autumnal palette.

Elusive characters embody a cinematic allure, as a duality of comfort and modern elegance abounds: structured leather coats and sophisticated tailoring is layered with fine gauge ribbed knitwear and silk

pyjama separates to create contemporary expressions of effortless luxury. The gold BALLY emblem and bevelled Bally Spell, and nostalgic touch of archival prints combine the rigour of smart tailoring and leather separates.

Fabrics include ‘corduroy’ suede, embossed python and lizard-effect leathers, plush shearling, quilted patent and velvet. Stonewashed denim and pinstriped English wools add elements of contrasting casual and formalwear, lifted by harmonious accessories in jewel tones of burgundy, ochre and deep ocean blue.

The accessories collection creates a bold counterpart to the silhouette, fusing classical European and Western influences in tactile finishes from velvet and suede thigh-high boots in soft earth tones, to bright embossed ‘croc’ and patent handbags and weekender styles.

LIVING GREEN

Narjes Khalil has always had a tendency to compile information and eagerly document life around herself whether through photography or collecting information. These skills helped her in her professional journey, and have led her to being an Environmental Scientist and Curator of Budaiya Hub.

In this inspiring chat with Farah Baig, she talks about environmental projects in Bahrain and the impact of mangroves, and shares her advice for young women pursuing a career in the environmental field.

When did you first take an interest in environmental science?

My journey into environmental science all began with my interest in fiction. As a kid, I was obsessed with stories about magical worlds, strange creatures and breathtaking landscapes. It’s like that fascination and that sense of wonder morphed into how I see the real world today – as something equally magical. I look at nature, our environment and this big blue planet with the same awe and wonder for those childhood stories. My simple goal was, and still is, to keep learning about it all.

What are some of the different environmental projects taking place in Bahrain?

I’d love to tell you about the exciting environmental projects happening right here in Bahrain. First and foremost, there’s the afforestation campaign that’s been making quite an impact. To explain, they’re planting trees that are well-suited to our environment; it’s not just about adding some greenery. These trees are strategically chosen to

combat the urban heat island effect, attract birds and provide much-needed shade. Every time I drive around, I can’t help but look out for those distinctive green metal poles that mark the campaign’s progress.

Speaking of green initiatives, I’m really proud to mention a project we kicked off at the Budaiya Hub called ‘Find us at the Park’. The idea behind it was to get people out to our parks, engage them in fun activities and emphasise the importance of them as community spaces.

What’s even more exciting is that this pilot project has evolved into a collaboration with the UN-Habitat’s National Wide Afforestation Data Collection project. We’re working together to assess the needs of our parks and identify the best spots to plant more trees. It’s like a natural extension of the afforestation campaign, and I believe it’ll make a significant impact.

You have a special interest in mangroves. What makes them so special?

Mangroves hold a special place in my heart,

and I’m really excited to share why they’re so important for our environment. Bahrain’s mangroves, the Avicennia Marina species, have given me something truly valuable – a sense of community with people who share a genuine passion for the environment.

What’s incredible about mangroves is how they demonstrate the interconnectedness of nature. These amazing coastal ecosystems have some remarkable qualities that make them stand out. For starters, they can absorb up to four times more carbon dioxide from the environment than tropical rainforests. So, they play a crucial role in helping combat climate change by reducing greenhouse gases. They are a bustling habitat for various species, from wintering birds to shrimp and fish.

So, when you see the lush mangroves here in Bahrain, it’s not just a beautiful sight; it’s a testament to the power of nature in bringing everything together – from ecological balance to human connection.

What can you tell us about Budaiya Hub and your role as its curator?

The Budaiya Hub is a group of young people that are part of the Global Shapers Community under the World Economic Forum working on projects which aim to make a positive change in the community. The shapers in Budaiya Hub are an amazing and inspiring group and I continue to learn from each and every one of them – I truly feel blessed to be around and part of such an amazing community.

Taking on the role at the Budaiya Hub has been quite the journey. I was approached last year to join as the vice curator, following a recommendation from someone, who I am grateful for, which prompted the offer. It was an entirely new experience for me, but I knew deep down that I wanted to challenge myself and embrace something entirely different – so it was an instant ‘yes’.

This year, when I was voted into the role of curator, it was another unexpected turn. I’ll admit that I had some initial concerns, but I also had a clear goal in mind – to create a space where young people can connect, share their ideas and simply have a great time. If I can inspire at least one person during my time in this role, I’ll consider it a success.

How did you pursue your environmental career academically?

I have been blessed with the opportunity to study environmental science. I earned my Bachelor’s degree from the University of Portsmouth, where I really honed my research skills. We delved into everything from terrestrial and freshwater habitats to environmental monitoring techniques.

During my studies, I discovered a strong interest in biodiversity. Especially after the fieldwork I conducted across the UK, Malta and Malaysia. Those experiences solidified

my passion for understanding and protecting biodiversity.

Do you have any advice for young women wishing to pursue a career in the environmental field?

Start by actively working towards your goal. Take charge of your path. Invest in your education and skills. If you don’t have the access to study the degree you are aiming for, connect the dots that will lead you there. Consider enrolling in environmental courses online, document what you see and learn on the field. Acknowledge and appreciate the work that has already been done around you, and carry on from there.

Remember that effort and hard work truly pay off. But here’s a secret: do it with a light heart. Don’t take yourself too seriously. Enjoy the journey – it’s much more fun and rewarding that way.

In the end, you’ve got to take that first step. Dive into the world of environmental conservation with enthusiasm, and you’ll find that it’s a journey worth every moment.

What advice would you give our readers so that they may lead a sustainable life?

When it comes to leading a more sustainable life, my advice is to start by thinking locally. It’s one of the most effective approaches we can adopt. Consider buying locally sourced and seasonal products. Embrace the timeless mantra of ‘reduce, reuse, recycle’ and seek out local initiatives that promote sustainability.

I’d also like to offer a piece of advice that’s close to my heart: take the time to truly explore your surroundings. Discover the wonders right in your own backyard. Observe the types of trees that surround you and pay attention to the specific bird species that visit. It’s truly fascinating what you can uncover when you start looking closely.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

I think, especially for those in this field or interested in this field, who grow up with the feeling of wanting to save the world. Don’t lose that – it is a beautiful belief. Don’t lose sight of the fact that we are guardians, custodians and caretakers of this Earth.

But remember that while we can save the world, we can’t do it alone. It’s a group effort. It’s not one action, one piece of work you do, that will tackle biodiversity loss. It’s a combination of so many different efforts.

In the Quran, there’s a verse that beautifully illustrates our role as stewards of the environment:

Lastly, be honest and authentic in your environmental work. Do it with credibility and a commitment to doing it right. Trust that others will do the same.

(And He it is who has made you successors upon the Earth). We must embody this responsibility.

“ضرلْأا فئلَاخ مكلعج يذلا وهو”

It has been an incredible journey for Miss Yacoub, who finished runner-up in last year’s competition before going one better this year. Considering that entering pageants was not something on her radar 18 months ago, her success has been staggering.

“I learned so much from last year, which gave me more conviction that I could be a representative for my country this time around,” she explains. “The beautiful thing about the Miss Universe organisation is that it helped me realise that I could reach out to my community and I could make a difference.”

Miss Yacoub is open about her struggles with social anxiety in the past, which makes her achievements even more remarkable considering the prism of scrutiny and recognition that such a title brings. She credits her communications coach, Hamad Al-Najjar, for the transformation and the confidence to project powerfully in the extremely important interview portions of the pageant.

“I also feel that being a mix of cultures – my dad is Bahraini and my mum is American –allowed me to develop a unique voice. On the global stage of Miss Universe, I can be there to also represent women or children that are mixed and who have a different outlook on life and culture.”

Miss Yacoub secured her success with her strong convictions on empowering women and girls, a cause incredibly close to her heart.

“As a woman, being part of this competition and actually wanting to do it and being allowed to is inspiring in itself,” she argues.

“I want to show that other Bahraini women can do it too and part of my platform is championing heroes in Bahrain. One person can’t really change the whole world, but you can change the whole world for one person at a time.”

After impressing with her confident outlook and determination to empower women in the region, Lujane Yacoub was recently crowned Miss Universe Bahrain. She spoke with Kristian Harrison about her life-changing achievement.

Words and actions are two very different concepts, but Miss Yacoub’s focus is now on the latter and she has already made a tangible difference in the community through her social media platforms and public appearances. She already has a plan in place to travel the long road of clearing up misconceptions about women in the region and Bahrain as a whole.

“As much as possible, I want to share what women here represent and what Bahrain represents through actual facts and stories. People need to see how women are encouraged and I now have the opportunity to do that through the Miss Universe stage, showing those internationally what we all see here internally.”

Alongside her feminist voice, Miss Yacoub is an artist at heart and she strongly believes in championing children through art and expression.

“My desire is to create impactful experiences through working with children,” she asserts. “I do art classes and it is important to me as someone who grew up with a learning disability to convey that art that was a tool I used to overcome it and thrive later in life. Art will never cease to be relevant, and some children that may not think in a linear fashion may think in a non-linear fashion.”

Miss Yacoub is now preparing for the Miss Universe 2023 final, which will take place in El Salvador on November 18. With such a powerful voice and determined goals, coupled with excellent support from her friends, family and team, it would surprise no one if she took the global crown too.

Body Safety Rules For Kids

As parents, there are several conversations you need to have with your child – the concept of ‘privates’ and inappropriate touching being an important one. This could be a tough subject to approach, but parenting columnist, Ouiam El Hassani, tells us how to address it in a way that your child fully understands the concept and is able to keep themselves safe.

As they say, knowledge is power, right? And as parents, we teach our children about water safety and road safety. We make sure they wear their life vests; know that they must hold our hands and look both ways before crossing the street, and to never touch a hot stove. But are we taking the time to incorporate body safety into our parenting conversations?

I understand, it’s an intimidating topic to discuss. What should I say? How should I say it? I can’t even imagine anything bad happening to my child—it’s too scary to think about! These thoughts are common, but avoiding the conversation won’t do anyone any good. Keeping an open line of communication can make a world of difference in your child’s life.

Body safety skills can be taught throughout your child’s life by including the topic as part of daily conversations. Here are seven steps you can follow:

1. Teach your children the proper names of their body parts.

As soon as your child begins to talk, name each body part correctly including the genitals. Explain to your child that their ‘private parts’ are the parts under their bathing suit. Note that a child’s mouth is also known as a ‘private zone’. Avoid the use of pet names to describe the genitals. This way, if a child is touched inappropriately, they can clearly state where they were touched.

2. Make sure there is a clear understanding of the word ‘private’.

Explain the terms ‘private’ and ‘public’ and stress the fact that ‘private’ means ‘just for you’. To create a correlation, you could perhaps share an example of how a toilet is a private place, exclusive to you when in use, but the kitchen is a public space because it is shared. Relate these terms to both spaces and body parts.

3. Explain to your child who they should talk to if they feel unsafe.

Teach your child that no one has the right to touch or ask to see their private parts, and if someone does, they must tell a trusted adult straightaway. As your child becomes older (3+ years) help them to identify three to five trusted adults that form their ‘Safety Network’ who they understand that they could tell anything to and they would be believed.

LIFESTYLE | parenting Womanthismonth.com 74 September 2023

4. Make sure they have a clear understanding of safe vs. unsafe.

Talk with your child about the feeling ‘safe’ and ‘unsafe’. Discuss times when your child might feel ‘unsafe’, for instance if they are being pushed down a steep slide; or ‘safe’ when they are snuggled up on the couch reading a book with you. It is important children understand the different emotions that are associated with feeling safe and unsafe.

5. Discuss what it feels like to feel unsafe. Discuss your child’s early warning signs when they feel unsafe, i.e. heart racing, feeling sick in the tummy, sweaty palms, etc. Let them come up with some ideas of their own. Tell your child that they must tell you or a person in their ‘Safety Network’ if any of their early warning signs occur. Reinforce that you will always believe them and that they can tell you anything.

6. Discourage keeping secrets. Instead, talk about ‘happy surprises’ such as not telling Granny about her surprise birthday party. Compare this with ‘unsafe’ secrets such as someone touching their private parts. Make sure your child knows that if someone does ask them to keep an unsafe secret that they must tell someone in their ‘Safety Network’ straightaway.

7. Empower your child to speak up if something feels wrong. Discuss with your child when it is appropriate for someone to touch their private parts; for instance, a doctor when they are sick (but making sure they know you must be in the room). Explain that if someone does touch their private parts (without you there) that they have the right to firmly say, “No!” or “Stop!” and outstretch their arm and hand.

Reinforce to your child that they are the ‘boss of their body’ and they do not have to kiss or hug a person if they don’t want to. Explain that we all have a ‘body boundary’ This is an invisible space that surrounds our body, and that no one can enter another person’s body boundary unless they allow it.

THE PINK PERSPECTIVE

The colour pink has become synonymous with breast cancer awareness, a cause that can be recognised and supported through the pink ribbon. This ribbon has evolved into a powerful symbol of hope and solidarity among those affected by breast cancer, their families, and the community at large. The colour pink is a reminder that breast cancer is a significant health issue that deserves attention and support. Breast cancer awareness campaigns have played a vital role in educating the public, encouraging early detection, and raising funds for research.

The journey towards widespread breast cancer awareness has been a long and impactful one. It began in the early 20th century when organisations like the American Cancer Society started spreading information about it. In 1985, the pink ribbon was introduced as the official symbol of breast cancer awareness. Since then, numerous organisations and individuals have joined the cause, organising events, fundraisers, and awareness campaigns to educate the public and raise funds for research.

Breast cancer awareness campaigns have had a profound impact on society. They have helped reduce the stigma associated with the disease, encouraged open conversations about breast health, and empowered women to take charge of their well-being. These campaigns have also raised billions of dollars for research, leading to advancements in treatments, diagnostics, and support for those affected.

While significant progress has been made, challenges remain, underscoring the need for continued efforts to ensure that all individuals have access to timely and accurate information about breast health. Access to timely healthcare and screenings can sometimes be a barrier to early detection and treatment. In addition, while awareness campaigns have been successful, social media and other channels can

sometimes lead to misinformation among the public. Addressing these challenges requires continued advocacy, education, and research.

Here are four meaningful steps that you can take to support Pinktober:

1. Offer Support to Breast Cancer Warriors

– This could be through volunteering your time, assisting them with tasks while they undergo treatment and being of emotional and mental support.

2. Support Research Initiatives – This could be through time volunteered, fundraising or personal donations. Think Pink Bahrain is a non-profit organisation that actively

supports the cause in the Kingdom.

3. Raise Awareness of Free Mammograms or Checkups – At times, people may be unaware of the facilities available to them. Spark up a conversation with the women in your life and discuss healthcare establishments which offer checkups and support.

4. Start Your Own Donation Drive – There are several ways in which you could raise funds for the cause as a member of the public. We’ve recently seen great community involvement through step challenges, bake sales, craft sales and more. Get your friend and family to ‘sponsor’ you cause and donate the proceeds to a registered charity at the end of October.

messages of breast cancer awareness is the importance of early detection. Mammograms, clinical breast exams, and selfexaminations are essential tools in identifying breast cancer at its earliest, most treatable stage. The earlier breast cancer is detected, the greater the chances of successful treatment and survival. Pink campaigns emphasise the need for regular screenings and self-awareness.

Through the power of pink, we can continue to make strides in the fight against breast cancer and offer hope to those affected by this disease.
