Bahrain This Month, often imitated but never duplicated, looks forward to another quarter-century of media success; not only in print, but now in digital format, online at www bahrainthismonth com, via social media digital extensions ranging from LinkedIn to Facebook to Instagram and more recently TikTok; as well as emailed newsletters and WhatsApp subscriptions on a regular basis.

I look back, a quarter of a century ago, to the time when we started the first ever monthly magazine (of any language) in Bahrain, I am filled with nostalgia; and terror! I remember canvassing potential advertising support from popular restaurants and watering holes in Manama who wondered whether there was enough happening in Bahrain, on a monthly basis, in order to justify that frequency of periodical.

Our forgiving audience were patient enough to bear with us as we committed to employing our first professional editor, the late Roy Kietzman; an American writer from Indiana, USA who put his heart and soul into the development of the magazine for the first eight years of its existence. Without the concise administrative support and loyalty of our first ever employee, Samson Vaz (who is still with us today), I know that this venture could never have survived the volatility of fate and circumstance especially over the past couple of years.

At the time when we decided to launch Bahrain This Month, there was a quarterly magazine in existence called ‘This is Bahrain & What’s On’ run by a popular socialite, Finola Flanagan. Her popularity as an ‘IT Girl’ was considerable and, for a time, she enjoyed significant success in her endeavours. Unfortunately, this media pioneer passed away a few weeks ago after a long illness and I am grateful to her for her contribution to our industry.

After the first issue was launched on 8th September 1997, I remember examining the multitudinous errors, including misnumbered pages, missing articles and duplicate forms (one of which, incidentally, was inserted upside down). Unfortunately, it was (by no means whatsoever) a pretty sight to behold. Severely embarrassed by this outcome, I tried to think of a way to recover from the ignominy of publishing failure and hit upon the notion that people would forgive almost anything as long as they could see themselves in the pages of a glossy magazine. We managed to include pictures of social activities, parties and events from the previous month to the appreciation of the Gulf Daily News subscribers at the time who took to the social photography element of the new publication in the same way that ducks take to water! In essence, Bahrain This Month’s ‘Bystander section’ became Bahrain’s very own social media platform before the advent of online media; and therein lies our success as it seemed to work even a quarter of a century on.

From being the first monthly magazine in the State of Bahrain 25 years ago, to launching the first magazine website in Bahrain, and now, the first NFT magazine cover in the region, Bahrain This Month has always been at the forefront of developments in the Kingdom’s media industry. It is due to the very nature of Bahrain and its people; not only Bahraini nationals whose natural traits emit kindness, compassion, gentleness of spirit; but also Bahrain’s expatriates from all walks of life and countries from around the globe, who also seem to reflect the benign elements of graciousness inherent in Bahrain society when compared to other communities throughout the world.

In the foreword of the trailblazing first issue, George wrote that his team of journalists and media professionals’ primary goal was, “to provide our readers with local leisure and entertainment information.” Of course, BTM still continues to do this 25 years later in both: the pages of its physical magazine and across its extensive range of digital platforms, which have emerged out of the Internet aether ever since.

25th AnniversaryCelebratory Issue

A quarter of a century ago, a certain George Middleton began publishing the first monthly magazine of any language in Bahrain; an English language monthly entertainment publication produced in the preKingdom State of Bahrain. Inspired by the new phenomenon of www.theworldwideweb, the publication was named “Bahrain This Month” (BTM) although the cover masthead was written in all lowercase letters, much to the consternation of many unknowing readers.

Lanterns on Budaiya Road has always been a favourite

Across a plethora of digital platforms including the BTM website, www.bahrainthismonth. com, Facebook and Instagram, the publication has accrued a substantial global following with frequent interactions from readers as far away as Canada, New Zealand and especially India. The magazine has always proudly positioned itself as a magazine for everyone, a lens through which readers can see the beauty, brains and brilliance of Bahrain.

2011-A time of turbulence which we eventuially overcame

The team behind Bahrain This Month, the Kingdom’s first-ever monthly magazine in any language, is proud to celebrate its 25th anniversary. We are happy to share some of our most cherished memories and exciting developments with our readers who have been with us throughout the years.

A Time Celebrateto

Whilst BTM no longer asks its readers to ‘fax’ or ‘snail-mail-in’ (ask your parents, kids!) their thoughts and opinions to the editor, and cover stars Boyzone are banished to the playlists of middle-aged women’s high school reunion discos, many of George’s words in his opening salvo still ring true to this day.

Perhaps most strikingly, Bahrain This Month was positioned from the outset as a publication “of value and relevance to Bahrain’s entire range of multi-cultural and multi-ethnic communities who, together, combine to make Bahrain the unique oasis of tolerance, friendship and tranquillity that so many countries in the world today can only envy.” This could not be truer all these years later, with the magazine appealing to both locals and expatriates alike. BTM’s monthly features and interviews cover the spectrum from local businessmen to international artists, former residents, regional figureheads and everything in between.

Bahrain This Month is immensely proud to present this souvenir publication to stand as testimony for the next 25 years, and as a gift to our audience across all our platforms. Enjoy!

A and-SamsonyouthfulVazRHM’sfirstemployeestillgoingstrong

As with any successful venture, BTM did not rest on its laurels. Now in its fourth decade of existence, it has since added a successful sister print publication, Woman This Month, to its portfolio, plus a raft of consumer guides, supplements and event calendars that continue to inform readers and viewers throughout the year.

RHM staff celebrate their success 2018

In addition, all commercial and editorial participants in this edition will share ownership of the NFT when launched.

It does not stop there. As BTM commemorates its Silver Jubilee with a celebration of the past 25 years and a look back at history, its eyes are also fixed firmly forwards as it continues to grow.

BTM is delighted to embrace a new era in media convergence through our proactive digital media marketing strategies and filming, editing and animation expertise.

to mark the momentous milestone, BTM has spearheaded a unique project; the launch of an NFT digitalised, animated, virtual front cover of the magazine –the first of its kind in the region. Iconic images chosen from the 300 preceding issues have been reinterpreted by selected local and international artists with a Bahrain connection and form the basis of the NFT.

With a genuine total reach of more than half a million individuals on a monthly basis, Bahrain This Month›s integrated offline and online media network is currently the 11th most popular website accessed in Bahrain and the premium choice for consumers offering an events portal as well as social media digital extensions for the benefit of the our audience and clients alike.

On this occasion, BTM is pleased to announce the inception of the ‘Best in Bahrain Brand’ awards; a spectacular annual consumer-based quality awards programme which will take place in January 2023, celebrating the best in consumerrelated products and services, such as hospitality, automobiles, healthcare, education, entertainment and the retail Furthermore, sector.

Bahrain This Month, often imitated but never duplicated, looks forward to another quarter-century of media success; not only in print, but digitally as it continues to add to its portfolio with an account on TikTok as well as emailed newsletters and WhatsApp subscriptions.

Wheel the

Bahrain’s motoring industry stands as one of the Kingdom’s proudest commercial pillars, with a wealth of automobiles from across the globe being sold on the Kingdom’s forecourts. Al Haddad Motors, the exclusive distributor of Mercedes-Benz, is one of the island’s most prosperous dealerships. This month, Kristian Harrison sat down with General Manager, Warren Hudson, to find out the secrets behind the success.

Reinventing

interview www.bahrainthismonth.com22 September 2022

I started life in the motoring industry in the early 1980’s as an apprentice car mechanic. I rose up through the service department via ‘Right First Time Repairs’ and was instrumental in the successful production of an in-depth quality control programme that was rolled out to the entire dealer network group I worked with.

Mercedes-Benz themselves have confirmed they will cease ICE (internal combustion engine) development in 2025 and be a fully-electric manufacturer by 2030. I believe in this region there will be slower uptake than experienced in other markets but I know from our MercedesBenz EQS, EQE and EQC product reveals in Bahrain that the market will receive these vehicles with open arms.

What are your plans for the future in terms of continuing to expand Al Haddad›s portfolio?

Since you took over at Al Haddad, it has become arguably one of the most successful dealerships in the Kingdom. What do you believe are the reasons for this success and what did you implement to facilitate it?

Last month, you launched a new Chinese vehicle agency. Can you tell us more about this and how it is a new concept that will perhaps change consumer practices?

I have no doubt that starting out on the workshop floor has given me a much stronger depth of knowledge of the automotive industry and of course both: staff and customer management principles.

How has the market changed since COVID19, and by extension, how has Al-Haddad adapted to this?

At Al Haddad Motors we have, as with practically all manufacturers, suffered from sporadic production of vehicles. For example, in many cases 15-20 of the same vehicles would arrive at the same time instead of various model segments being available all the time. This has naturally impacted sales targets both monthly and yearly.

Best of all, our valued Bestune customers at launch and for a limited period will benefit from a region-leading lifetime warranty, a five-year service package and VIP insurance with various additional benefits. This represents a unique suite of packages offered in Bahrain and we aim to provide high quality cars with peace of mind and value for money to our customers through the Bestune brand.

What advice would you give to someone wanting to get involved in your industry, whether that›s customer-facing in the dealership or more behind the scenes?

I would always look to a brand that has a good name in the market, with a strong emphasis on training and development. It’s easy for a manufacturer to say: ‘Yes we are’, so you have to do research and talk to people who work within the company of interest before you take the leap. Do not be scared to ask questions on how they are treated and if they get the tools to do the job right first time. Asking if an employee has been on training courses recently or when their last personal appraisal was are important questions.

Of course, I am working with MercedesBenz, the worldwide German premium brand manufacturer for 10 years straight, so I had great foundations to work with. There was also a strong, well-experienced team at Al Haddad Motors when I arrived, but change was needed in the corporate philosophy, particularly being a more customer focus-driven business.

On the back of these successful programmes, which still operate today albeit tailored hugely by various manufacturers, I advanced to management and roles which encompassed all the various revenue streams in the industry from service to new and used car sales, eventually leading to general management.

Finally,points.anemphasis

Certification for manufacturers in Bahrain has been somewhat protracted in reality, but we are now seeing various marques launching EVs in 2022 and I am sure most of them will have EV options in 2023. For Al Haddad Motors, our first EV models will arrive very soon. EVs are of course the future, and we are already seeing huge uptake especially in Europe.

We updated our extended warranty and service programmes, re-iterating the brand’s quality and longevity principles to

Can you tell us about your career to-date and how you ended up in Bahrain?

What are Al Haddad›s plans to introduce electrical vehicles to the market? What challenges do you think you›ll face with this in Bahrain?

Things are improving now but stocks remain low and model mix remains the major concern. On the customer service side, we are seeing a slowdown in the parts supply chain, with parts being sent to production lines as opposed to parts warehousing which is causing delays in the normally fast-moving arm of the business and unfortunately leading to some delays in repairs.

As technology moved forward faster than ever, I realised there was a shortage of skilled staff in the market. In particular, there was a need to look at mechanics and technicians differently in order to elevate the status and career paths for technically-skilled personnel. I therefore embarked on a design and production dealer apprenticeship programme, which alongside the aforementioned quality control initiative, was picked up throughout the group and by a number of premium brand manufacturers to train and develop their own staff.

We as a dealership are always looking to diversify our portfolio. Bestune follows on from our acquisitions of both Avis Vehicle Rental & Leasing and Topaz Detailing, with additional ventures planned. Our plans include coming up with state-of-theart cricket facilities in Bahrain and hosting international cricketing events in Bahrain. We plan to promote sport tourism and, once facilities are ready, hope to host big tournaments. Currently, we send our coaches to various schools so we can participate in bilateral tournaments between different countries. We would need support from the business community and corporates to realise our vision.

Bahrain has been my home since 1987. I was initially a software engineer, working with several leading banks and hotels. During the Gulf War, when many software firms left the island, I found a window of opportunity when I got a call from a leading bank to fix a critical flaw in their system.

WHERE IT ALL STARTED

Like most people, it was when Shaikh Rashid was in school that he realised his talent was appreciated. “Our teachers would ask us to paint, and on seeing my paintings I was told to persevere by them and my family,” he says.

With an extremely proactive approach, Shaikh Rashid is undeniably a champion of the arts movement in Bahrain having made several efforts to grow and develop the art scene,

inspiration, and there’s no denying that one of the most inspiring Bahraini artists of our time is none other than Shaikh Rashid bin Khalifa Al Khalifa. His extensive artistic journey began more than 50 years ago when he held his first exhibition at the age of 18. Since then, he has been a part of more than 60 solo and group exhibitions, in Bahrain and across the world, at some of the most prestigious galleries.

including the development of the picturesque RAK Art Foundation in Riffa.

Their vivid imagination and ability to create breathtaking works of art on a ‘canvas’ of their choice has made artists a subject of interest for the longest time. What people don’t always realise, though, is the sheer importance of art in our day-to-day lives. Think about the last time you took a moment to step back and marvel at a work of art. Did it invigorate your thoughts, make you experience a strong emotion, inspire you or perhaps provide you with a mental escape? It’s vital, isn’t Bahrain’sit? art scene, too, has been a source of

As we celebrate 25 years of Bahrain This Month, we speak to one of the most prolific artists in the Kingdom who has made tremendous contributions to Bahrain’s art scene - Chairman of Bahrain’s National Council for Arts and Honorary President of the Bahrain Arts Society, Shaikh Rashid bin Khalifa Al Khalifa. He takes us on a journey through his creative life, and shares his top priority in the interest of Bahrain’s budding artists.

As a founding member and Honorary President of Bahrain Arts Society, Shaikh Rashid has identified several talented artists in Bahrain. “I see the artworks of prolific talent in Bahrain being exhibited at the Annual Fine Art exhibitions and follow them on Instagram. Many of them are extremely talented; we just need the opportunities for them to progress even further, whether it be through regional or international participation,” he says.

One of the key observations that Shaikh Rashid has made over the years is that more women are entering the art scene leading to a growing interest in Bahrain’s art movement and a consequential increase in attendance at Shaikhexhibitions.Rashid was also at the helm of developing the stunning RAK Art Foundation, which has grown to be a source of inspiration for artists and art enthusiasts alike. “When I first acquired my family home in Riffa, my first intention was to preserve it. However, when we converted it into an art foundation, what came to my mind was our goal to promote art aside from emerging

Speaking about the most memorable of his stellar achievements, he says: “In 1994, the Bahrain Art Society had an exhibition which was inaugurated by HRH the Duchess of Kent which was very special. Then in 1986 or 1987 we participated at London’s Saatchi gallery. In fact, Mrs. Saatchi came to one of our exhibitions which was in 1993. More recently, in 2018, I had a solo exhibition at Saatchi Gallery in London which was a very big thing for me.”

Rashid also has an avid interest in design, interior design and architecture as he finds it to involve more than painting and be positively challenging. “The things that inspire us includes activities around us, sceneries and the use of materials. Since I do design, I find that materials also give you a different approach to implementation. For instance, when I did the convex versions, I initially started with canvas stretched on timber and moved on to aluminium as I found it to more robust, flexible and related to the design,” he explains.

Shaikh Rashid’s submission for Bahrain This Month’s 25th anniversary NFT initiative.

As for inspirational local artists, Shaikh Rashid views the late Dr. Ahmed Baqer, the late Karim Bostar, Karim Orayedh and other artists as peers that he looks up to, mentioning that they have somehow guided his career forward. “Regionally, we have artists from Egypt and other countries such as Diya Azzawi from Iraq and Nasser Al Riffai who were all sort of an inspiration for young artists in the region,” he says. “I believe you must have inspiration all the

and established artists in Bahrain. This was in addition to educating and showing the importance of art in our society. You need to appreciate art; it is all around us... we just need to preserve it and show it correctly.”

Sharing his thoughts on being named the Chairman of the newly established National Council for Arts, Shaikh Rashid says: “I am thankful to His Majesty King Hamad who trusted us to be in this council. I hope we can achieve what we have in mind for Bahrain, our top priority which has to do with arts Whileeducation.”artprogrammes currently available at schools in Bahrain are considered to be good, Shaikh Rashid states that there isn’t a dedicated body for teaching arts for school graduates. “Hence, we need a proper college that artists can go to. We have wanted this body to be set up for a long time, so I hope that we can collaborate with relevant institutions to establish this for future artists,” he Speakingsays. about his main aspirations for Bahrain’s art scene he concludes: “I want to see an art college in Bahrain. Let’s push for it. That’s number one because this has been my dream for a very long time. Then of course, to have art and artists in Bahrain and watch them achieve an international level and be exhibited somewhere, not only in Bahrain, as they deserve to be abroad.”

“Having their appreciation was extremely Heencouraging.”wassoon awarded a scholarship by HRH the late Shaikh Isa to pursue his art education in the UK – a gesture which helped him pursue his career. As the years went by, and with each successful exhibition, Shaikh Rashid attained a high profile in the international art scene.

At the time when he first started, Shaikh Rashid considered the hazy paintings of the famous 18th century British artist, William Turner, to be some of his favourites. He interpreted the foggy and smoky depictions of sceneries to be more like the sandstorms and heat here.

Navigating through different facets and forms of art painting, illustration and poetry, Eskander continues to discover and evolve within all these realms of expression and creativity. His contemporary portraits are at once arrestingly life-like and gothically evocative, conveying a sense of immediacy in each piece, as they draw you into the canvas. The background swallows all the surrounding and takes you to the very centre of the piece. They invoke a gut reaction, which differs from each Thereperspective.isanundeniable strength in the images Eskander conceives, as well as deep-rooted sense of respect, courage, empathy and natural beauty. Eskander cites the works of Gustav Klimt, Francesco Clemente and Lucian Freud as influences on his work as well as the love of music that varies from day to day. This year, the American fast-food restaurant is celebrating the 40th anniversary of its opening in Bahrain. We take a trip down memory lane with the Chairman of Jawad Business Group, Faisal Jawad, who tells us about his journey to opening the first Dairy Queen branch.

“I thought to myself ‘Why stop there?’, so I had a discussion with my colleagues who agreed that we could introduce the concept. I wrote back saying we were interested and well… the rest is history,” he says.

Bahrain came about in 1980 when Mr. Jawad was having a discussion his mentor and two American residents. “At the time, there wasn’t a proper concept where you could go and get a burger in ten minutes flat. You could go to a restaurant and ask for one but it wouldn’t be consistent,” he explains.

“Prior to opening, we’d each written our expected outcome on a piece of paper – BD 500, BD 1,000 and so on. We were all wrong. It was rewarding and a memory I will always cherish,” he adds with a smile.

Mr. Jawad saw an advert in Bahrain’s National Gazette that shortly after. “Dairy Queen was registering their trade name, and I thought they manufactured cheese. I wrote to them expressing my interest in exporting some and received a response explaining that they were not a dairy company. ‘We’re a burger and ice cream company. Thank you and good bye.’ it read,” he reminisces.

QUEEN OF OUR HEARTS

The first branch opened its doors in Salmaniya as the first restaurant in Bahrain to have a drive-through. “On opening day, we did not know what to expect. There were three Americans who’d flown in from Minneapolis to help us with training, the staff and myself; we had the biggest shock. People from all around the island, including some of Bahrain’s most important people, flocked to us,” he remembers.

those who have grown up in Bahrain, the feeling that some iconic locations are now completely unrecognisable is unshakeable. While this might ring true for some areas, the same can’t be said for the Salmaniya junction for one major reason –Dairy Queen. Whether it’s a birthday party, family dinner or a chat over an iconic Blizzard with a friend, long-term residents all have a Dairy Queen story.

Dairy Queen was opened elsewhere in the region; however, Bahrain’s Dairy Queen presence is the only one that persevered and exists to date. After reaching its historic 40-year milestone, celebrations are certainly in order. “I believe the guidelines that we followed ensured the quality and consistency of our products, and enabled us to enjoy that longevity. The continued existence of Dairy Queen certainly shows a lot of passion from us as a family. In fact, my son Kareem practically grew up with that business, and is determined to celebrate the occasion in a fitting manner even more so than me,” he says.

Dairy Queen now has nine branches in Bahrain (most recently in Hidd) and the team intends to expand further. “The team we have today is not the same as the one that we started with in 82. They have new ideas and new challenges too.” he says. “I would like to thank the people of Bahrain for patronising Dairy Queen, everyone who has ever worked for us, and Kareem and his team for being very passionate about the brand,” he says graciously.

LEADINGTHECOMMUNITY

It’s an amazing experience being in Bahrain so far. Two things struck me; firstly, the level of economic development attained under the dynamic leadership of His Majesty King Hamad, and secondly, just how well the COVID-19 pandemic was handled here. I came from the UK, which has one of the best healthcare systems in the world and the difference was stark. Bahrain’s vaccination rollout was extremely efficient.

When I arrived, we were still in the middle of the pandemic so it was difficult to find a footing. After a year, it’s difficult to register a tangible achievement, but I can say that I have particularly focused on two things. The first is the activation of dormant relations between various ministerial departments of both countries. This gave them fresh impetus moving forwards to both: solidify and expand the ties between us, which has been done by establishing joint working groups at the ministerial level and by hosting visits. Secondly, I believe I have achieved some success in providing effective online consular services. We receive many requests in person for passports, extensions of ID, power of attorney services and much more. I took a lead in making this much easier to do digitally to

Bahrain and Pakistan enjoy a longstanding diplomatic partnership, with bilateral relations beginning in 1971. Since then, the Pakistani community in Bahrain has grown considerably, with the embassy estimating that there are more than 100,000 Pakistanis currently residing on the island. Bahrain This Month spoke to the Ambassador of Pakistan to the Kingdom of Bahrain, His Excellency Muhammad Ayub, about his diplomatic career and his plans to bolster ties between the two nations.

Then I spent four years in the UK as the Deputy High Commissioner, and now this is my first Ambassadorship here in the Kingdom of Bahrain.

During my career in the Foreign Service of Pakistan, I held various diplomatic assignments at Pakistan’s Missions Abroad, including Cairo, New York, Brussels and London. In the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, I served as Deputy Director (South East Asia Pacific), Director (Arab Affairs) and Director (Europe).

Your excellency, you have had a distinguished career so far. Can you give us a brief overview of your diplomatic postings and missions to date?

The UK has a large Pakistani diaspora, as does Bahrain, with lots of cultural and social values evident. In Bahrain, there is a huge political solidarity with the two countries and a strong relationship between the leaders. I’ve been very fortunate to represent my country in a variety of cultures.

This year, Pakistan is celebrating its 75th anniversary since its independence, and so we have events running all throughout the year. These activities will continue through until March and we are very excited to showcase our country, show unity with Bahrain and strengthen our relations with the Kingdom going forward.

the potential to increase investment. My task here is to convert the strong political partnership to an economic one, and this remains my keenest focus.

How do you believe the Pakistani culture has influenced Bahrain, especially in terms of cuisine which is hugely popular here?

In terms of tourism, any ambassador from any country will say that their home country is beautiful, but I believe Pakistan truly is extremely wonderful. Not just in terms of picturesque locations, but business tourism too. Our cities are booming and are becoming hotspots for global businesses, so they are ideal for Bahraini investors to visit and perhaps create networks there.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

Last year we had the opportunity to celebrate 50 years of diplomatic relations between the two countries. The anniversary provided a huge opportunity to run the gamut of celebrations and partake in numerous activities with a focus on enhancing co-ordination between our leaderships. Now that COVID-19 is mostly behind us and life is getting back to normal, we can really accelerate this and some of the plans we had last year can now come to fruition.

We would estimate that there are more than 100,000 here. Obviously, a large segment of our community is blue collar labour workers, but we have many educated professionals here in fields such as medicine, banking and education. We are particularly proud to have 30 university professors currently in the Kingdom who are Pakistani.

Of your many career achievements over the years, which particular experiences do you think have helped you most in your role as ambassador?

avoid long waiting times and facilitate immediate help.

What activities does the Embassy of Pakistan in Bahrain undertake to promote cooperation and unity between the two countries?

The main aspect of Pakistani culture is obviously the food, but there are many other aspects too. During the Spring of Culture festival, we hosted numerous events featuring music and dance, including a sell-out event at the Cultural Hall last year.

How many Pakistani expats live in Bahrain? What are the most prominent vocations amongst the Pakistani community’s residents?

I see a lot of attention in the tourism, food security and education and training. These sectors are the most important, especially food security which is a global issue now postpandemic, and also with the Russian invasion of Ukraine and the issues that has caused.

If you study the history, then Pakistani culture has influenced the Kingdom in so many ways that you wouldn’t realise. Bahrain is such a special place because it is a mix of cultures, from both: east and west, and adapts things in its own special style.

What are the current trade figures between Pakistan and Bahrain and what areas of business or commerce between the two countries do you think could be improved significantly?

In terms of goods, we have USD150 million and in services this is USD160 million, so combined that is more than USD300 million in bilateral trade. Of course, this does not reflect the closeness between the two countries and

Pakistan has extremely fertile land, with four seasons and can grow any type of fruit and vegetables. However, it has issues with international standards for transport and infrastructure. I think there are many opportunities for Bahraini investors to collaborate with Pakistani businessmen and work to secure sustainable supply chains.

obvious market.

My experience at the United Nations in New York was definitely a career highlight, especially in terms of passing resolutions, as was my campaign in Pakistan for more GSP+ concessions, which was a long diplomatic campaign. I’d highly recommend any young officers to apply for these positions; it’s a huge honour!

Royal Ambassador…

From the very first hour of being at Fontana Infinity, it was clear that it creates an environment that facilitates a truly luxurious lifestyle for its residents. After our quick ‘check-in’ at their front desk, and being escorted to our floor, we were welcomed with a fresh platter of fruit at the apartment – a nice touch rooted in Royal Ambassador’s hospitality expertise.

While touring the apartment, we marvelled at the spectacular sea and city views which could be enjoyed from the unobstructed floor-toceiling windows, or spacious balcony. The apartment meets several expectations which make it the perfect space for a family. The living room is airy and provides ample room for residents to relax. The space includes an open kitchen with an island making it the perfect place to host guests. We loved their attention to detail – soft closing doors and cabinets, concealed appliances, and clever kitchen accessories to help with organisation.

The bedrooms are the perfect spot to recharge your batteries with extremely comfortable beds, a dressing table with lighting, a reading chair and spacious closets to put away your

Each apartment is tastefully designed and furnished with contemporary furniture and fixtures. In addition, the fully-furnished apartment is fitted with all necessary appliances and electronics, so as the team says: “Residents just need to get their clothes and personal care items and move in.”

What sets Royal Ambassador’s properties apart is the fact that they go beyond being just a place of residence by providing residents with five-star hospitality services, making them the best leasing solutions in the Kingdom. Their unique in-house capabilities include a myriad of high-end facilities, extensive security, housekeeping, maintenance and a front desk team.

Redefining ‘Luxury Living’

The concept of urban living in Bahrain has been transformed with Royal Ambassador designing and managing some of the most opulent properties in the Kingdom. This month, Farah Baig discovered the Royal Ambassador lifestyle experience at one of their most exquisite properties in Juffair – Fontana Infinity.

This month, we were given the opportunity to live in the very lap of luxury at one of Royal Ambassador’s most sought-after high-rise towers in Juffair – Fontana Infinity. The property consists of the North and South towers, each with a range of studio apartments aside from one- and two-bedroom apartments for rent or freehold purchase. The factors that differentiate the apartments from one another is the size, whether or not it has a balcony, choice of interior colour palette, and the view.

belongings. It’s worth mentioning that the apartments have central air-conditioning, with one main advantage – the living room and bedrooms each have separate controls. The bathrooms provide you with a five-star experience as each is fitted with ceilingmounted rain showers, and came stocked with all necessary toiletries.

ENCOURAGING COMMUNITY LIVING

While there are personnel on the GF floor, it is recommended that young children are accompanied by an adult at all times.

UNMATCHED FACILITIES

At the time of its establishment, Royal Ambassador embarked on an ambitious mission to meet the growing need for sustainable highquality residential solutions in Bahrain. After living at Fontana Infinity for the weekend, we can

Aside from the multi-purpose hall, Fontana

One of the key factors that makes Fontana Infinity so special when compared to other high-rises is the sheer extent of facilities available to its residents. The developers have spared no effort to create the ultimate community lifestyle experience, which encourages residents to interact with one another too.

Parents of young children will be very happy to know that the property even has an indoor kids’ softplay area complete with slides and a trampoline. This is aside from the outdoor kids play area. The property’s high level of security, which requires residents to access various areas with a key card, ensures that everyone is safe at all times.

Infinity has five barbeque areas, including two which have access through the pool.

Being a luxury property that exceeds expectations beyond the market norm, Fontana Infinity has designed the perfect fitness and sporting area – one that truly encourages and facilitates a healthy lifestyle. Fontana Infinity’s gym includes several machines and fitness accessories required for cardio, strength-training and resistance training too. Residents also have access to the property’s personal trainer should they require additional guidance or a one-on-one training programme.

There are several advantages of living at Fontana Infinity, but what we thought to be a clear stand-out advantage for long-term residents were their community spaces. As pioneers of a new concept in community living, the property has a spectacular multi-purpose hall which guests can book should they wish to host guests. The beautiful space can accommodate up to 30 people and is ideal should residents wish to have catering as it has a kitchenette.

Throughout our experience we were kept very comfortable thanks to the attentive nature of Royal Ambassador’s team which goes above and beyond to maintain personal relations with tenants.

While working out at the gym is a dream, we have to make a mention of their indoor football and basketball area; this, in addition to the steam, sauna and locker rooms. Those wishing to get an outdoor run in can safely make use of the path which goes around the pools.

The sprawling ‘GF’ floor which is accessible from and runs through both towers houses these facilities. To start our extensive tour of the floor, we discovered the indoor entertainment area which included a soundproofed cinema for twelve, complete with comfortable chairs. Next, we were given a tour of the arcade, which is fitted with highend gaming stations, and the community playroom which includes two pool tables, a foosball table, and even a comfy area for all to play a bit of PS5!

say that they have in fact succeeded.

Following our experience, it’s clear that Royal Ambassador has earned a reputation for being a leading Property and Facility Management Company in Bahrain through their unwavering commitment to quality, innovation and customer care. Aside from their existing properties, Royal Ambassador is currently developing the much-anticipated skyrise, Onyx, in the picturesque Bahrain Bay. We cannot wait to see how Onyx shall further redefine the meaning of a ‘luxury lifestyle’ in Bahrain.

On stepping outside, we discovered spectacular innovations. The property has a beautiful landscaped area with plenty of greenery, and has not one… but five pools. This includes a kayaking pool, lazy river, lap pool, temperature-controlled indoor pool and even a man-made beach! We thoroughly enjoyed relaxing at the pools, and the indoor jacuzzi after a long day.

A Culinary Legend

“I changed the game on calamari and squid in Bahrain. Fisherman used just to throw it back, but Cico’s sold it by the kilo; we changed the scene in Bahrain regarding dining and seafood,” says this master chef and restaurateur of Cico’s fame, but fish and seafood were not the only things he had on the Bahrain food scene all those years ago.

Adliya has grown to be a dining and entertainment hub in the Kingdom of Bahrain. Those who have been here long enough know that it was the establishment of the legendary Cico’s Italian Restaurant in 1978, which revolutionised the dining industry in the Kingdom. On the occasion of Bahrain This Month ’s 25th anniversary, Farrah Saville takes a trip down memory lane with the man behind the celebrated restaurant, Ettore Cicognini, better known as Cico to most people.

Cico’s Italian Restaurant served northern and southern Italian cuisine, which was traditional yet modern at the time of its establishment. By 2005, Cico’s was institutionalised as the ‘Best Restaurant’ at the International Hotel and Restaurant Awards in Madrid, Spain cementing its place on the world map as a dining establishment to visit. Its consistency of service, fresh and first-class produce, and authentic and welcoming atmosphere had paid off.

interview www.bahrainthismonth.com46 September 2022

Now a landmark in the vibrant Adliya district, Cico’s Italian Restaurant was known for being a haven for the who’s who of Bahrain’s high society, where diplomats, ministers, ambassadors, and international celebrities would gather. In fact, Grammy award winner Tony Bennet once visited the charming restaurant in its heyday – such was its popularity.

Their first few years were difficult as Cico was running a nightclub, and it wasn’t making any money. “Nobody was paying their bill; it was a disaster! So, I left and had no job,” he says.

He had also incorporated seafood into the menu, another groundbreaking move. “Hammour Arabic was one of my favourite dishes which grew to be very popular with diners. We grilled hamour in lemon and garlic with parsley,” he says.

He changed the game regarding fine dining and upped the ante when his restaurant received a special beverage licence which he said was a simple process.

He explains that with Mr. Yanni’s help, they found a place in Adliya to open a restaurant. “We went to see Mr. Obaidly, who owned the place and still owns it. And he said ‘okay, go ahead, do what you like’. I got my friend Peter involved, who was also living in Bahrain, and he helped me out. So, we started Cico’s with everything we had. In the beginning, I was doing everything; the cooking, the serving, washing up - everything,» he explains.

During our Zoom call, he points at pictures from the restaurant, including many with customers and photos of Bahrain.

Following his visit to the island, Cico had a conversation with his wife who agreed to giving the move a try saying “It won’t cost us anything.”

Cico and his wife worked on the menu and insisted on serving only the freshest ingredients. So, he visited the fish market every day at 5am. Another way Cico ensured his ingredients were the best was by sourcing ingredients from Holland and, eventually, Italy, which included the freshest Parmesan cheese. “I slowly brought them all in, and they became famous with even local people buying some of the ingredients,» he says.

“It was tough when I came back to the UK from Bahrain,» he says, explaining that the transition was not easy.

Cico soon met Mr. Yanni and together they opened a little shop. “He gave me a little bit of money, and I told him I’d done some work at a restaurant previously and could start something in Bahrain. I bought a lot of stuff cheap to get Cico’s started, and we started from nothing,» he says proudly.

“I used to give them good wages, bought their

So, what’s the story behind Cico’s? “I worked in Parklane in London at a popular burger place. It was the 70s, and it was good. The restaurant was busy. Then I met a Lebanese manager from Cathay Pacific who brought me to Bahrain for three days,” says Cico.

www.bahrainthismonth.com September 2022 47

“Even George Middleton, the publisher of Bahrain This Month, knows that Cico’s was the place to be seen. It became the meeting place for bank managers and other professionals treating their clients to Cico’s in the 70s and 80s. I worked very hard to keep Cico’s going and made sure we trained our staff from the kitchen to the front-of-house properly. Everyone was either at Cico’s or talking about Cico’s,” he

Cico believes that a big part of the restaurant’s success was how staff were managed. “We made sure that staff were paid and that we paid for their visa, which was a lot of money back in those days. They were all under my sponsorship and happy to work for a long time. Once they started with me, they never left. They would cry when they had to leave if they had to go,” he says.

As the years rolled by, Cico wanted to expand his business and thought of opening a burger joint, but his father changed his mind, which ended up being the best decision he made. People complained that they couldn’t even get a table. “We kept the restaurant going, and we just got busier and busier. We had a lot of high-level and international guests, and even hosted the Palestinian ambassador and the Secretariat.»

While Cico’s was incredibly successful, his love for his children superseded his passion for the restaurant business in Bahrain. Cico’s restaurant meant a lot of time away from his children, and he missed them terribly. Eventually, his wife bought a house outside of London on a hill - a “mountain to climb” as Cico describes it.

Cico says that his favourite memory of living in Bahrain is that he was happy. “I was delighted with the people of Bahrain, and I was making a good living. Sometimes, I used to finish at the restaurant at one or two in the morning, and by four or five I used to go to the markets to get my basket of fresh fish. That’s one thing I know for sure - my fish was fresh every day,” he concludes.

It’slaughs.been

After leaving Bahrain, Cico worked at several restaurants across the UK, including another Italian restaurant and a Spanish restaurant. The restaurateur currently lives in Guildford Surrey, UK, is now a grandfather of six and will soon be a great grandfather! He grows roses in his garden as a daily reminder of his life in Bahrain “It’s a reminder of the flag,” he says.

“My wife designed the menu and helped me out in the kitchen because her English was much better than mine. As for the logo, my daughter designed the one you see today,” he adds.

18 years since Cico left Bahrain - a place he thinks about daily. “I was friends with everybody when I lived there. I have so many pictures of so many people. I was an older friend to many… like a mentor. I don’t know if anyone still remembers me; not many people keep in touch,” he says, adding that one of the people who often kept in touch from the restaurant was his Matre’D, Francis, who was in charge when he left.

uniforms, including their waistcoats, and even found their accommodation. They were never bothered about the work that the chef gave them, and were happy. I always looked after them,” he adds.

Ever since she was a little girl, Ranya Malovic. knew she had an affinity for the performing arts. Years down the line, she has grown to be one of Bahrain’s most popular performers and, more recently, an artist manager too. She speaks to Farah Baig about her love for dance, efforts to create an inclusive agency and thoughts on the Kingdom’s entertainment industry.

“I am a professional performer. My work is basically what defines me. It’s my life.” These are the words of the supremely talented Ranya M. who is known across the island for her mesmerising performances.

Since the Kingdom bounced back from the effects of the pandemic, events and entertainment have returned in all their glory. If you’ve recently been at a large-scale event, wedding or prestigious hospitality venue, chances are you’ve seen the stunning Ranya performing or managing full-scale shows with some of the artists that she manages.

“The style that I perform the most is belly dance, but I also do commercial styles including jazz which is my biggest passions, and fire shows which are a mix of dance and stunts using fire props,” she says.

DISCOVERING DANCE

Eastern community in my country was quite small, and so they approached me to perform on special occasions since I already knew the songs. That, in a way, changed the course of Overthings.”the years, Ranya thrived and so she competed in several regional and international competitions for performance and choreography. “I would place in every one of these events, but the one I consider to be the most memorable is the WADF World Championships in 2017 as I had won three categories,” she says.

ON BAHRAIN

“When I was just four years old, my parents had a blanket with a border of a different colour. I’d set it down on the floor and it would be my ‘stage’ while I’d dance to a whole album of ABBA. That’s the earliest memory I have of myself dancing,” she reminisces.

On noticing her love for dance, Ranya’s parents enrolled her in a classical dance preparation class, commonly known as ballet. When asked if she believes it laid a foundation for her skills she says: “I think this is a controversial topic. I don’t think it’s necessary to have a ballet education if you want to be a good hip-hop or belly dancer, but I will say that it’s always useful to cross-train. It helps with balance, turns and discipline but you don’t need to go into pointe shoes and put your body through all of it. As a classically trained dancer I will say yes.”

Dancing Queen

Ranya’s experience of being a performer in Bahrain has been largely positive to date. “When I first arrived in Bahrain seven years ago, I was only meant to be here for three months. There can be a lot of stigma around female performers. I’ve performed in Egypt, India, France, Netherlands, Austria, Poland and Hungary too, but I felt the most comfortable and safest here in Bahrain out of all other Middle Eastern countries. It was one of the determining factors which motivated

When the time came for Ranya to progress to pointe shoes, she opted instead to dabble in jazz, ballroom and Latin dance. “I came across belly dance by chance and wanted to try it, so I joined just for fun,” she says. “The Middle

As a foresighted individual, Ranya has plans which involve extensive expansion across the region. “I definitely intend to grow Flames in terms of the number of performers and performances we have. We’ve also had bookings in Saudi Arabia and would like to expand further. That’s another reason that

Ranya believes that Flames is positioned to be the perfect agency as it is run by someone who is both a performer and a manager. “Hence, I understand every aspect of the clients’ and performers’ needs. My ultimate goal is for Flames to be one of the largest, most successful agencies in the region,” she says.

me to stay,” she says.

As an artist who has performed at several venues across borders, Ranya found that her experience working for various managers was also a driving factor when deciding to start her own company. “Not all of them were great so I decided that I would be the sort of manager that I wished I had. As a woman, I felt the need to create an agency which would be safe for women and as body positive as possible. We have dancers from the age of 18 through to 41 and hope to be an inclusive agency which gives everyone an opportunity to develop,” she explains.

costumes, props, choreography and even light and sound,” she explains.

“The all-style company started with two dancers but has grown to have sixteen professionally-trained dancers in just under a year. We have ballerinas, gymnasts, Latin dancers, urban dancers and aerial artists.

She explained that performers are similar to high-performance athletes in the sense that it involves intensive training and lots of hard work. “I knew that once I finish performing actively, I would want to stay in the field as a choreographer so going into artist management made sense. As part of Flames, I provide a complete production which includes

“I definitely feel like in Bahrain sometimes if you create the offer, then the market comes. One of the other reasons that I love Bahrain is the fact that women are encouraged to have a professional role and not just expected to fulfil a family role.”

On a more personal level, Ranya shares that she is an animal lover and hopes to make a difference in the lives of senior animals. “I’ve always been a dancer, but I always thought I’d be a vet. I actively support shelters and TNR efforts and hope to adopt as many older animals that most people do not see as very adoptable to give them a beautiful end to their life with a loving family,” she says.

motivates people to book with me – you don’t have the hassle of having to fly in performers and make any other necessary arrangements,” she says.

Ranya recently co-founded a performance arts business, Flames Dance Company, which provides entertainment for all kinds of events. “COVID was a catalyst for Flames in a way. When there were lockdowns, I had plenty of time to prepare and train my dancers for the world of art,” she says.

The Turkish Night can be enjoyed every Wednesday from 7pm to 11pm. We’ll certainly be returning to tuck into more of their fantastic fare!

On touring the many stations set up by the Baharat culinary team, it was clear that they had prepared quite a feast! The team, led by Turkish Chef de Cuisine Onder Shahin, explained that select ingredients were imported from Turkey to ensure the authenticity of the flavours. Apart from the wide selection of salads, mains and desserts, Baharat has set up fantastic live stations for grills, Turkish pastries (pide), shawarma and vegetarian wraps (cig kofta).

To start our feast, we selected a number of unique salads including the traditional Cilbir –a salad made with yogurt and poached eggs. While the selection of salads included some classic cold mezze, we appreciated the fact that it allows diners to experience something completely new with the traditional Turkish salads featuring ingredients like bulgur, molasses, roasted eggplant, finely minced chicken and seafood too!

As

The cig kofta which is made with a mix of bulgur and loaded with pickles, freshly chopped vegetables and more was especially tangy and flavourful. Next, we tucked into a bowl of fresh lentil soup which was made to perfection – smooth and flavourful. The turks are known for their fantastic selection of meats, so we were thrilled that Baharat has a live station where grills can be made to order. We thoroughly enjoyed the Chicken Shashlik, grilled lamb liver and juicy

In true five-star style, the Baharat team has outdone themselves with the selection of desserts. We were spoiled for choice with kunafa, fruit tarts, cakes, baklava, rice pudding and Le Meridien’s ever so popular Stick Date Pudding. Each of the desserts was delightful, making it the perfect end to our Turkish feast.

an avid traveller, I can easily say that visiting Turkey was one of my most memorable travel experiences. The rich history, sites, culture and absolutely delectable cuisine made it a trip to remember. It comes as no surprise then that I was overjoyed when I found out that Le Méridien City Centre Bahrain had launched a ‘Turkish Night’ at their restaurant Baharat – an ode to Turkey’s lipsmacking cuisine.

The Turkish mains are quite authentic at Baharat and feature ingredients like pastrami, white beans, bulgur and manti. The manti, which is in essence mini lamb dumplings, were pure comfort food. We enjoyed them with generous dollops of thick yogurt and a drizzle of tomato sauce. The Topkapi chicken, which is named after the historic palace in Istanbul, was a sensational dish of stuffed chicken which had very delicate flavours.

On being seated, our host offered us a unique Turkish beverage made in-house – the Turkish Omani Sharbat. The refreshing drink is made

NIGHTTURKISH

It’s no secret that the residents of Bahrain get to enjoy some of the very best food from the comfort of their homes thanks to the growth of delivery services. This month, we tried some of the delicious fare from a trending new eatery, #grab.

It’s not every day that we realise or appreciate the many conveniences that we get to enjoy in this day and age. We, however, consider the fact that it’s possible to place an order and have it delivered to your door within the hour to be a true blessing. While there are plenty of restaurants to choose from, finding one that serves a wide variety that is healthy, delicious and made from fresh ingredients can be a Thatchallenge.allchanged one afternoon when we discovered one of Bahrain’s latest cloud kitchens, #grab. The innovative concept has a brick-and-mortar presence at the Juffair Boulevard Hotel, but the more extensive menu is available to those who order online. On browsing through the menu, we couldn’t help but notice the sheer variety of items which includes everything from Asian to Italian, Russian and everything in between. To start our experience, we tucked into the colourful Avocado and Shrimp Salad which was uncomplicated yet flavourful as it had just the right amount of dressing. #grab makes a variety of sandwiches with freshly baked

citrusy beurre blanc that added a pleasant zing. We appreciated the fact that the salmon had the perfect sear while the mashed potatoes and vegetables were well-flavoured making it a balanced, healthy meal.

#grab a bite!

It’s only natural that we end our meal on a sweet note; so, we picked three desserts: Grandma’s Cinnamon Apple Pie, Rich Chocolate Brownie and the Cheesecake. We’re quite picky with our pies but we loved this one – the crust was light and the filling was pleasantly sweet with just the right amount of cinnamon. The Rich Chocolate Brownie certainly lived up to its name – it was moist, topped with a thick sauce, and embellished with nuts! The cheesecake too was delicious – moist, not too sweet and light too.

ciabbata bread. We opted for the Turkey and Cranberry sandwich which was filled with thick-cut slices of turkey, locally-sourced tomatoes, fresh lettuce, and dollops of cranberry sauce. It’s the perfect bite for when you’re on the go.

The fact of the matter is that our at-home dining habits have now changed; we want to get excited about our orders just as we would when dining in. After checking out #grab, we can safely say they do an amazing job of doing just that!

The team at #grab has a sensational selection of mains; we couldn’t resist starting our meal with the Lasagna Al Forno. With layers of pasta, spinach and ricotta, this dish was a great start to our main courses – the perfect choice for vegetarians! The Chicken Breast Scallopine with a velvety mushroom and rosemary sauce which paired well with the roast potatoes. We loved #grab’s specials which truly push the bar for at-home dining. The Crusted Mini Steaks were our first choice and a good one at that! The delectable beef tenderloin was grilled to perfection and bursting with flavour. This was served with a generous serving of buttery sauteed vegetables including carrots, broccoli and roast potatoes, and a decadent #grab’ssauce. take on Grilled Salmon is truly special as they’ve further elevated the dish with a

I’m certain you can see how being lean and bootstrapped could be a perfect way to start up. It certainly seems that way. However, like

Last month I discussed how it’s important to look after the company’s needs before evaluating an investor. Clearly, in my view, investors are a maze to be navigated – but, you might ask, what’s the alternative? It could be bootstrapping and staying lean.

Customer feedback and product validation is at the centre of any successful strategy. If you don’t have the luxury of resources, you need to pitch your ideas to someone. Choose to pitch to your customers. Show them what you’re planning. Early adopters will guide your future changes. It may be a much more efficient way to go to market. Scale and investment need customer validation. You don’t really need a lot of users to validate your product at a small scale. A few good customers can be equally powerful.

Time it right – make it perfect later. When I started my first job as an Analyst at a global investment bank, my superior gave me a sound piece of advice – “The first deliverable doesn’t have to be perfect. It has to be on time”. Golden words that have a pretty wide scope of implementation. The Lean Start-up is based on a similar idea – the first product you develop has to be a minimum viable product (MVP) – not a perfect product. Once you have

START-UP SMART LEAN, VIABLE AND FLEXIBLE

The underlying premise of both bootstrapping and a lean start-up is to conserve and be cautious with resources –that means time and money.

Businesses are set up with the ultimate aim of making money. Since it takes money to make money, the tendency is to either get investors or to bootstrap and hardly spend. Both of these are extremes. Efficient use of resources and a customer feedback driven product – that’s the core of being lean. There are no real magic wands in life, but if there were ever a way to increase the odds, a lean approach could be the answer.

Customer is King, Queen and all their subjects

Being lean is often considered the same as “not spending”. However, as we all know, you have to spend money to make money. The idea of being lean is more about being efficient in what you spend on. It’s about being cheaper and faster than the alternative. You will need to spend in times of trouble and at critical junctures. However, choose wisely and spend to relieve pain. Don’t spend in anticipation of pain – wait till it’s uncomfortable.

Eric Ries coined the term “Lean Start-up” way back in 2011 with his book ‘The Lean Start-up’. The core idea is to be efficient. Why the buzz?

Accessing the Metaverse

Over the past few months, we all might have noticed how the internet is going crazy about the Metaverse with several articles, debates, and videos on the topic being released far and wide. It’s currently one of the hottest topics, with startups attracting funding and brands jumping on the wagon, releasing NFTs, launching virtual shops, etc. However, as an end user of the technology, it’s still challenging to wrap one’s mind around it. So here’s what you need to know:

What’s all the buzz about?

• Ultrafast internet that allows to stream, and access content and other services in real-time

• Digital currency to perform transactions across digital services

METAVERSE

Sravan Kumar.V is a Digital Marketing expert and a passionate marketer. Find Sravan.V on LinkedIn

• To access the Metaverse a user would require a few technologies or devices such as:

2D Screens using Touch or Mouse Natural UI/UX Platform Specific Profile Pic / User ID Personalized Digital Avatar / Universal ID Software Applications / Websites Virtual Experiences

Everything oriented in 3D Live Streaming Life Streaming In-App Purchases Crypto / NFT Ads, Content, Physical Commerce Virtual Commerce/Live-to-earn

Computers / Tablets / Smartphones Virtual Reality (VR) / Extended Reality (XR)

The Metaverse can be seen as life within a virtual world driven by ultrafast internet and multiple digital technologies, such as virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), live streaming, cryptocurrency, and more.

Even though one may not notice any immediate results, as early adaptors, it will help brands and companies to establish themselved on the metaverse in the long run, where most digitally savvy Gen Z and Gen Alpha audiences will be active in the coming decades.

What is the Metaverse?

The Internet’s experience with the Metaverse

The table below explains how the metaverse enhances the internet:

INTERNET

Text, Audios, Videos, or Images

While the Metaverse is not a replacement for the internet, as it evolves it will become a system of immersive technologies and services, thereby elevating the user experience on the internet. In simple terms, it is like a comparison of normal Nokia-era phones to smartphones. As technology evolved, different technologies and services were able to be imbibed into a single device, making it a multi-purpose smart device that enhanced the overall user experience.

METAVERSE

In simple terms - it is the next generation of the internet. The first generation of the internet followed more of a read-only format, i.e text, from which we slowly evolved to graphics, then to video and now the metaverse with fully immersive digital interactions. The metaverse is a form of digital interaction where connected, virtual experiences simulate those of the physical world.

commerce

• Overall, the metaverse is believed to be the next big thing and it would take a couple more years to experience it in reality. Until then you can immerse yourself in a VR game and experience how realistic it is.

Even though the Metaverse is still in the nascent stage, it might take another five to ten years for it to become a mainstream technology. However, tech, media companies, brands, and consumers are actively engaging in the metaverse.

• Immersive devices that support virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), extended reality (XR)

When Bahrain This Month celebrates its golden anniversary (inshallah!) in 2047, what will cars look like then? They’ll almost certainly be fully electric but also driverless too with an array of sensors rendering human input largely redundant bar emergencies. Touchscreens will be a thing of the past with mere gestures being enough to communicate with your car. It’ll be almost impossible to have your car stolen too as entry and start will be determined by biometrics (retina scanners and fingerprints). One thing is for sure, we’ll all be laughing at how cumbersome and oldfashioned things seem now, with plenty of parents proclaiming ‘back in our day, son…’!

Backing into small spaces, parallel parking or even just checking your blind spot have all

The actual design and construction of modern vehicles have become a key feature in the automotive process. Ergonomically designed dashes and chairs are kitted out with steering mounted controls and electronic lumbar support. Better interior materials, sleeker and more sophisticated interior designs and luxury editions such as heated and ventilated seats are all features that are, more often than not, included as a standard. Auto seat adjustment and memory functions are becoming more and more common... back in our day, we had to wind our own windows down or actually turn the key to unlock the doors and start the ignition!

The motoring industry is one of the fastestmoving in the world, with new models and technologies rolling off conveyor belts at a rapid pace. This month, as we celebrate Bahrain This Month’s 25th anniversary, Kristian Harrison looks back at how things have changed since 1997.

Entertainment

Hybrid/Electrical Vehicles

If there’s one other industry which moves just as spritely as motoring, it’s entertainment. Back in the late Nineties, most cars had AM radio (FM was a luxury!) and a tape deck for cassettes. Any kids reading this might have to ask their parents what they even are, but if you really want to feel old, then consider that CD players have been and gone, as have AUX sockets as standard. Now, with our urge and compulsion to stay connected at all times, designers are struggling to keep up. Even USB connections are considered cumbersome with those fiddly wires. Now, it’s all about voice activated controls, Bluetooth connectivity and the likes of Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, all designed to keep us constantly connected.

By the turn of the millennium, bigger was better as powerful gas guzzlers came to the fore. Meanwhile, adding a hybrid motor to a petrol engine was deemed unworkable until Toyota sought a way and invented the Prius, taking the world by storm. Today every carmaker is working

Manoeuvres that once required the assistance of a second person have been made redundant with a whole array of assistive technology including rear view cameras, integrated cameras and sensors which tell us our proximity to other cars and walls with a buffet of beeps.

There were versions of GPS sat-nav systems built in from the early-90s, but the US military added interference to the signals as they guarded the technology closely. In 2000, US President Bill Clinton ordered the military to stop scrambling GPS signals and open the technology up to everyone. Now, navigation to within a metre is standard in most vehicles, usually integrated through your phone.

There Will Be Blood

If you claim you got through this movie without shedding a tear, you’re lying. Based on Stephen King›s 1996 novel of the same name, the film stars Tom Hanks as a death row corrections officer during the U.S. Great Depression who witnesses supernatural events that occur after an enigmatic inmate (Michael Clarke Duncan) is brought to his facility.

Titanic

Ruthless silver miner, turned oil prospector, Daniel Plainview (Daniel DayLewis) moves to oil-rich California. Using his adopted son to project a trustworthy, family-man image, Plainview cons local landowners into selling him their valuable properties for a pittance. However, local preacher Eli Sunday (Paul Dano) suspects Plainview’s motives and intentions, starting a slow-burning feud that threatens both their lives.

The Green Mile

How could we start with anything else? The cultural phenomenon which made fantasy cool again is arguably the greatest trilogy of all time, so much so that we couldn’t list each of the (brilliant) films individually and instead lumped them into one. Make sure you catch the story of a meek Hobbit from the Shire and his eight companions who set out on a journey to destroy the powerful One Ring and save Middle-earth from the Dark Lord Sauron.

James Cameron›s Titanic is an epic, action-packed romance set against the ill-fated maiden voyage of the R.M.S. Titanic; the pride and joy of the White Star Line and, at the time, the largest moving object ever built. She was the most luxurious liner of her era – the ‘ship of dreams’ –which ultimately carried over 1,500 people to their death in the ice cold waters of the North Atlantic in the early hours of April 15, 1912.

Are there any of these you’ve missed?

Breaking Bad

Lost

Set and filmed in Albuquerque, New Mexico, the series follows Walter White (Bryan Cranston), an underpaid, overqualified and dispirited high-school chemistry teacher who is struggling with a recent diagnosis of stage-three lung cancer. White turns to a life of crime and partners with a former student, Jesse Pinkman (Aaron Paul), to produce and distribute crystal meth to secure his family›s financial future before he dies, while navigating the dangers of the criminal underworld.

The Departed

The Wire

TELEVISION

In this crime-action tour de force, the South Boston state police force is waging war on Irish-American organised crime. Young undercover cop Billy Costigan (Leonardo DiCaprio) is assigned to infiltrate the mob syndicate run by gangland chief Frank Costello (Jack Nicholson). While Billy quickly gains Costello›s confidence, Colin Sullivan (Matt Damon), a hardened young criminal who has infiltrated the state police as an informer for the syndicate, is rising to a position of power in the Special Investigation Unit.

The Dark Knight

From the drug-infested streets of West Baltimore to the corruption of City Hall, The Wire chronicles the tribulations of a post-industrial American city. Viewed from the perspectives of both the police and their targets, the series captures a world where easy distinctions between good and evil, and crime and punishment, are challenged at every turn.

Despite the onslaught of Marvel movies in the last 15 years, this remains the best superhero film of them all. With the help of allies Lt. Jim Gordon (Gary Oldman) and DA Harvey Dent (Aaron Eckhart), Batman (Christian Bale) has been able to keep a tight lid on crime in Gotham City. But when a vile young criminal calling himself the Joker (Heath Ledger) suddenly throws the town into chaos, the caped Crusader begins to tread a fine line between heroism and vigilantism.

Lost was a fast-paced, suspenseful, and surreal series about a group of people who survive when their commercial passenger jet, Oceanic Airlines Flight 815, crashes on a remote island in the tropical Pacific. As the survivors work together in an attempt to stay alive, they discover many mysteries about the island. The series may be marmite, but for fans in the early days of internet forums, trying to unravel the series’ mysteries was an incredibly fun experience … even if the answers never arrived.

Forget about the last season (if you can) and revel in what was a cultural powerhouse. The story of the Iron Throne and the Seven Kingdoms of Westeros, which spun a web of political conflicts among noble families, made dragons, swords and magic cool again rather than purely for nerds. It dominated water cooler talk for almost a decade, a feat unlikely to be matched again.

Demand for the track was higher than could possibly have been anticipated. As well as the UK chart, it topped the Billboard Hot 100 for 14 weeks and is the second biggest-selling single in history worldwide, with a grand total of 33 million copies sold. According to Guinness World Records, only Bing Crosby’s

‘White Christmas’ from 1942 has sold more.

On the polar opposite end of the pop spectrum, the second best-seller of 1997 went to ‘Barbie Girl’. The ridiculously catchy song by Danish-Norwegian dance-pop group Aqua quickly became a global phenomenon and remains a disco classic and has more than one billion hits on YouTube.

Continuing the eclectic run of huge hits in 1997, placing fourth is a cover of Loud Reed’s ‘Perfect Day’, recorded by a world-class lineup of performers including David Bowie, Gabrielle, Tom Jones and Elton John for an advert promoting the BBC’s diverse music coverage. Curiously, rounding off the top five was children’s TV favourites Teletubbies with their chart-topping debut ‘Teletubbies Say Eh-Oh!’, while further down, Will Smith’s theme to the

hit film Men in Black, ‘Don’t Speak’ by ska-pop band No Doubt, and ‘Torn’ by Australian star Natalie Imbruglia all rank within the Top 10. You can’t mention the Nineties without speaking about certain icons, and 1997 was another huge year for Spice Girls, landing no less than four Number One hits: ‘Spice Up Your Life’, ‘Mama/Who Do You Think You Are’, ‘2 Become 1’ and Christmas chart-topper ‘Too BritpopMuch’.

Regular readers will notice that our music page looks a little different this month! We’re taking a short break from bringing you the latest and greatest albums to take you all the way back to 1997 and the era of thick gold jewellery, white denim, Union Jack sunglasses and flared jeans. That’s right, since Bahrain This Month is celebrating its 25th anniversary, why not look back to see what was popular in the charts when our first issue rolled hot off the press?

1997 was a momentous year for albums too. Foo Fighters catapulted into the mainstream with The Colour and the Shape, still a pillar of guitar-led rock, The Notorious B.I.G.’s Life After Death ruled the hip-hop world even though the album was released posthumously, and Radiohead released what many critics to be the best album of 1997, if not the Nineties as a whole, with OK Computer.

In third is ‘I’ll Be Missing You’ by US rapper Puff Daddy and singer Faith Evans. Released in memory of rapper Notorious B.I.G, who had been murdered four months prior, the track, which sampled The Police’s 1983 single ‘Every Breath You Take’, logged a total of six weeks at the summit, making it the UK’s best-selling song of summer 1997.

For Bahrain This Month, the answer is equal parts momentous and tragic. On August 31, 1997, Princess Diana passed away in a car accident in Paris causing an immense outpouring of grief and affection worldwide. In tribute, Elton John released what would quickly become the UK’s best-selling single of all time – the double A-side of ‘Something About the Way You Look Tonight/Candle in the Wind 97.’ ‘Candle in the Wind’ was originally written and released by Elton as a tribute to Marilyn Monroe in 1974, and the star – with his longtime lyricist Bernie Taupin – recorded an updated version to be played at Diana’s funeral, which was released as a single the following week.

Madden NFL 23 is an upcoming American football video game based on the National Football League (NFL). Former head coach and broadcaster John Madden, whom the game was named after, will be the cover star in honour of his death in December 2021. This time, the franchise mode will feature new additions, including free agency tools and additional trade factors, plus a raft of new animations.

It wouldn’t be Xenoblade without bizarre, otherworldly locations to adventure in, and the environments in this one are suitably odd. There’s one area that takes place inside of a giant discarded sword, and another that leads you along the branches of a massive tree. Exploring these areas as you unravel the mysteries of Aionios add to the unpredictability and weirdness of the world in a really cool way.

GAMEPLAY

Celebrating the 25th anniversary of the Digimon franchise, Digimon Survive sees a brand-new group of teenagers, led by Takuma Momozuka, get lost on a school camping trip, finding them transported to a strange new world of monsters and danger. As they fight their way back home through an animated world of difficult decisions and deadly battles, players’ choices throughout the game will impact the evolution of their monster allies, and the final ending. VERDICT:

Like its predecessors, this is a role-playing game with a large open world to explore. The game allows for up to seven party members to participate in battles at once, including the main party of six and one of several different characters that appear over the course of the story. Party members will also gain the ability to change their character class, granting them access to different abilities in battles, which occur in real time. In a helpful move, players can now turn on a quest navigation line that will mark a line on the ground to follow if they are unsure of how to reach their destination.

Shaikha Haya: Customers are more aware and more open to all sorts of styles and ideas now than they were when we first launched. Mostly it's down to the speed of communication through social media, the internet, and a younger emerging generation of critics and influencers. Fashion is always a reflection of what’s going on in the wider society; customers are seeking out smaller brands like ours with personality and creativity rather than sticking to only historically established brands worn by previous generations.

Shaikha Haya: Our brand longevity. With over a decade of history and previously showing at NYFW, we emerged from the global slowdown of 2020 with a renewed sense of focus and preparedness for London Fashion Week. We elevated not only our offering, but also our campaign and communication around the collections as well as our e-commerce experience. We’re very proud of the path we’ve charted out for Noon By Noor.

What would you consider to be the most significant achievement of Noon By Noor since its establishment?

Shaikha Noor: Our goals are always longterm with short-term actions that work towards them. Being recognised and stocked internationally in the UK and Italy, since we took the opportunity to refresh and revalue our collection offer due to the pandemic, has been an achievement, as well as growing our home market stockists.

Shaikha Haya: Noon By Noor is a women’s fashion label that delivers an everevolving perspective on what women’s clothing should give us - mixing heritage and novelty on a foundation of luxury and self-assured femininity.

Since launching Noon By Noor in 2008, how has the brand grown?

We’re grateful for every step of the way and the unwavering support we’ve received from my mother, Her Highness Shaikha Lulwa bint Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa, since day DESIGNING FOR WOMEN OF SUBSTANCE

Shaikha Noor: We have a common understanding of our goals and work very closely with our team to achieve them. From sampling to the final product, sales and marketing – we each have something to add and feel comfortable challenging each other’s ideas and making decisions together with the brand’s interest at heart.

Shaikha Haya: We are looking forward to our launch of resort wear for a new branch of Noon By Noor at the end of the year and the relaunch of our girlswear line early 2023. Currently, we are working with a fantastic creative team internationally to produce the assets for our London Fashion Week showing this month.

Noon By Noor is a brand which stems from two designers. How do you believe your individuality and similarities have influenced the brand?

Shaikha Noor: It's been an incredible journey. From the first-ever collection that we presented to an intimate group of family members at The Ritz-Carlton Beach in 2004 – before we even launched Noon By Noor – up to our New York Fashion Week runway shows and now, our London Fashion Week presentations, it’s been a slow and steady ride up.

Would you say that there have been changes in how people approach fashion since you launched your brand compared to now in 2022?

This month, Farah Baig speaks to the visionary designers behind the brand Noon By Noor, Shaikha Noor Al Khalifa and Shaikha Haya Al Khalifa, who share their brand philosophy, their thoughts on fashion and design, and exciting announcements for the brand.

PEOPLE | Septemberinterview2022 www.womanthismonth.com96

What are your short-term and long-term goals for Noon By Noor? Any exciting announcements we can share with our readers?

one. She has in great part inspired the brand, and her unconditional support is what keeps pushing me forward.

Shaikha Noor: At the heart of our philosophy are the women who wear our clothes; individuals of style and substance who value quality as well as a fresh and intelligent design perspective, and, who themselves, exist to make a difference. Whether she’s throwing on a liberally embellished jacket over a slip dress or working a vintage wedding dress, she does not shy away from creativity in the service of self-expression.

Fashion has long been known to be a creative form of selfexpression. In fact, research suggests that the clothes we wear can positively affect our confidence and our character too. Established in Bahrain in 2008, Noon By Noor is an exquisite brand that has produced impeccable collections that encourage this self-expression.

How would you describe Noon By Noor?

What is the design philosophy of Noon By Noor? How would you describe the woman who wears Noon By Noor?

Shaikha Haya: Listen to constructive criticism; it’s part of any brand’s evolvement.

Shaikha Haya: There’s great design talent in the region and everyone has their own unique, awe-inspiring backstory. Local or International, both paths rely on powerful strategies and have distinct advantages. It’s a matter of realising a vision, setting goals, planning diligently and being patient. Success is a long game.

Shaikha Noor: People are much more discerning - there are a lot of products out there and our customer today looks for style, quality and good business ethics. Fast fashion has a place in the market especially when customers mix pieces with designer or high fashion. But customers are much more aware of the impact of fast fashion on the environment today – much more so now than before and this is reflected in their shopping habits.

What are your thoughts on fast fashion? Do you believe it has had an impact on high fashion? If yes, how so?

Shaikha Noor: Consistency and hard work is really important. It’s not always easy, but when you get through the hard times, it’s always worth it.

PEOPLE | Septemberinterview202297www.womanthismonth.com

What can you tell us about your Fall 2022 collection?

Happy 25th Anniversary to Bahrain This Month!

Shaikha Haya: Inclusivity in any form can only be a good thing and fashion should be for everyone, not just for one body type or age group. We want to feel that our clothes help our customers to be confident and be

Shaikha Noor: Our Fall 2022 collection was one of our favourite collections so far. We brought the collection to life with plays of materials and textures and created interesting contrasts using colours, fabrics, and silhouettes – a clash of clichés. It has already received some great compliments from industry insiders and customers alike.

Shaikha Noor: We encourage women to define what success means to them and achieve it. Whether it’s building a business, a family, both or maybe focusing on themselves – just set the target and go after it.

As renowned fashion designers, what are your thoughts on emerging designers in the Kingdom and the rest of the region? How do you believe they compare to international designers?

Is there anything else you would like to add?

What are your thoughts on the inclusivity of fashion for different body types and individual preferences?

themselves. To dress up, to be seen, to say that they’re here in their individual way.

Do you have any advice for those wishing to enter the industry and launch their own brand?

The collection also makes use of a variety of materials: jacquard with animalier graphics, paired with knit tops enriched by Swarovski crystals tone-on-tone and also combined with textiles reminiscent of liquid mercury. Looking at the volumes we find another juxtaposition, with wide bomber jackets and slightly flared miniskirts and finally, in the feminine and masculine elements. This time, rendered with the idea of the tuxedo bowtie, untied around the neck and transformed into the detail of a garment and of a long dress, like a man’s jacket worn with just a pair of very tall boots, like a suede stocking, or with orchid decorated pumps. Lastly, the trousers. In the accessories, light dictates the pace, with a cascade of rhinestones that wraps the waist and the boot.

Iconic Fashion

Fashionistas around the world are loving this season’s trends and it’s clear why. This month we explore the Genny AW 2022/2023 collection which brings you the best of both worlds – weaving together minimalist silhouettes and strong colour palettes in a rich variety of fabrics. Our editor, Farah Baig, lets us in on her top accessories to go with the collection too!

The minimalism is seen through the silhouettes, super polished, reminiscent of the 90s. The maximalism is in the colours with a very strong palette of tones like chocolate, coral, fuchsia, purple, tangerine and lime that characterise the looks. Genny’s style is an ode to sensuality, without rifts or stretches but that is, actually, the translation into clothes of being a woman, strong and effortless at the same time.

Bringing together sharp contrasts in a harmonious fashion can result in some of the most shockingly alluring looks. The Genny AW collection 2022/2023 has been created according to the vision of the Creative Director, Sara Cavazza Facchini. The result is a collection that is rock-solid yet soft, linear yet sinuous – very clearly presenting minimalism and maximalism together as one.

Editor’s Pick By Far AW 2022

In 2021 and early 2022, we examined women representation in the boardroom carried out by a sample of 117 organisations based in Bahrain, the percentage was 9.8 percent in 2021, and 11 percent in 2022.

In this article, Eman follows up by looking at the current situation and provides a researched insight into the current situation revealing dramatic statistics of women representation in Bahrain listed companies.

Portfolio Management Professional (PfMP) and Accredited Chartered Manager (CMI), Eman Deabil, has written a number of articles for Woman This Month on the topic of ‘Women’s Path to The Boardroom’ and given readers valuable insights into how to climb the corporate ladder and get to the boardroom.

5.9 percent - Women Representation in Bahrain Listed

In Bahrain we have 42 publicly listed companies on Bahrain Bourse spanning over nine categories, as seen on the Bahrain Bourse website. An analysis was conducted by looking at the Board of Directors of each company and concluded the following:

LIFESTYLE | opinion www.bahrainthismonth.com102

In this article we cover the listed companies in Bahrain. According to the Central Bank of Bahrain (CBB) a "Listed Company means any company whose securities are listed on the Stock Exchange”.

WOMEN REPRESENTATION IN BAHRAIN’S BOARDROOMS

Women in Bahrain, and all around the world, are making waves in the community through their extensive contributions. The role of women in the boardroom in the Kingdom can be strengthened if there is a push for gender equality. Simply put: representation across the board matters.

A leading authority on corporate governance in the Kingdom of Bahrain, Saleh Hussain, shared his views on the subject: “The onboarding of women to various boards of directors in Bahrain needs to receive serious support from not only the government but most importantly from

“In my opinion, the current board membership in Bahrain needs overhauling. Male dominance deprives corporations of diversity of thoughts and discourages application of good governance.”

To make this vision possible, we need to have a profound action plan to develop and groom women for directorship positions.

LIFESTYLE | opinion www.bahrainthismonth.com September 2022 103

By analysing the members of the boards, around 60 duplications were observed, and hence we were left with 311 unique directors (actual persons). The total number of male directors were 289, out of which 42 are serving in two to six boards

Over-boarding is not a recommended practice anyway and prevents increasing women representation. The report that was published by Aurora50 in June 2022 ‘Non-executive board careers in the UAE: A path to gender Balance’ stated that: “It is vital for the number of women on boards to increase, but it is equally important that this to be done by increasing the pool of women instead of ‘overboarding’ existing female directors.” The same report highlighted the increase of women representation from 3.5 percent in 2020 to 8.9 percent of all UAE listed board positions (i.e. 115 companies). Another

From the above analysis, we can conclude that “over-boarding” is limited to male directors in the listed companies, let alone the board directorship roles in other non-listed companies. Some directors are serving in more than 20 – 30 boards inside and outside Bahrain.

According to the ISS Governance (US), “Directors are considered OVER-BOARDED if they sit on a number of boards which could result in excessive time commitments and an inability to fulfill their duties”. The Corporate Governance Code of Bahrain is recommending under principle 1: “One person should not hold more than three directorships in public companies in Bahrain with the provision that no conflict of interest may exist, and the board should not propose the election or reelection of any director who does.”

report published by Deloitte ‘Women in the boardroom | A global perspective’ highlighted the initiatives that were undertaken to increase women’s representation in boardrooms (e.g. mentoring programmes, director development programmes, quota requirements, UAE Gender Balance Council).

According to the European Institute for Gender Equality (EIGE) France has the strongest representation of women in the boardrooms of the biggest listed companies at 45.3 percent. If Bahrain can score an increase of three percent every year, it will take 13 years to achieve it.

various societal entities such as the Chamber of Commerce and Industry. Continuous lobbying, events and utilisation of various media channels will make a difference.

From the above, we can observe that 22 of the total 371 board seats are attributed to women, which represents 5.9 percent Whereas 349 are attributed to men, which represents 94.1 percent. 26 companies out of 42 (more than the half) have no women representation (0 percent) or in other words, 26 listed companies have all-male boards. Boards’ chairmanship appears limited to males, and no female is chairing any board.

What are DetachmentDefensiveMeltdowns?

Sometimes, the child who was happy (and definitely happy to see you) when you

Any parent who has been through it knows how real it feels. It's a subconscious thing, they don't even know they're doing it but it's very real. They defensively detach from you by being angry at you, and shoving you away, and may call you names, and while it's often loud, intense, and inconvenient, parents should try looking at these displays of defensive detachment as a gift. Our children don't have the words to tell us what they are thinking and feeling, but this behavior can help us figure out what they need.

In other words, let’s imagine how you feel after temporarily losing sight of your child in a public space, like a supermarket. When you are reunited with your child - after a separation you were not in control of - you often hug them, kiss them, hold them, but then, that relief can turn into frustration and anger. When your child is having defensive detachment meltdowns after school, that's how they're feeling: Relieved to see you, but frustrated at having been separated and over their lack of control.

There are two amazing and very helpful books that you and your child can read together: The Kissing Hand (about a young raccoon leaving his mother to start school in the forest) and The Invisible String (about a mother who tells her children they are connected by an invisible string). A child may feel more connected if they have their own "kissing hand" or "invisible string" at school with them. Send a piece of you with them to school: a photo, a necklace, keychain etc.

fetched them from their classroom can seem downright mad at you, by the time you’ve made it home.

For mamas who have been missing their little one all day, being pushed away can sting a bit, but this especially frustrating and personal form of after-school restraint collapse is totally normal, and actually a sign that your child really does love you a lot.

Instead of suppressing a display of defensive detachment, there are healthy ways parents can soften the intensity of the separation , and give kids room to be loud and intense when they need to be Parents can start their defense against defensive detachment meltdowns in the morning .

Has your child ever had a meltdown right after school? Ouiam El Hassani explores why it happens and how to deal with them?

Try and set your alarm, for maybe 15 minutes earlier every day, so that you have a bit of time to actually connect with your child and really fill up their connection cup before you send them to school. Spending this extra time together in the morning can help ease the child into the separation of the school day while feeling more strongly attached to their parent. Let them know you are connected even when you are not together.

September 2022 www.womanthismonth.com110

We know that after-school meltdowns are a real thing. After a long day of school, it can be hard for kids to hold it together. They may melt down or have an emotional outburst, and sometimes - especially with young children who attend preschool - there is one particular emotion – Anger. A lot of times, this anger is directed at mum and dad.

If you are dealing with defensive detachment meltdowns right now, remember that even if your child isn't showing it, they do love you, mama. More than they can ever say.

ATK Fine Arts Exhibition The Art Attack Krew, a community of artists in the Kingdom of Bahrain, organised the ‘ATK Fine Arts Exhibition’ which was held at the Muharraq Model Youth Centre. The event included an art exhibition, live painting and an art workshop.

Let them let it out: Sometimes, all the quality time in the morning and all the loving reminders from home can't totally prevent a child's day away from you from being hard. If you sense a defensive detachment meltdown is coming on after pick up, it's best to take control of it by inviting it. I’m sure you weren’t expecting that!

By taking a proactive approach and literally asking for the meltdown to happen, parents can speak to their children while their child can still understand them. If we wait until they're freaking out to take control, we can't. So, before your child loses the ability to hear you, let them know that you hear them. You hear that they need to release their emotions in a loud, intense and inconvenient way, and you are okay with it. Pull the car over or clear a space in the living room and just let those loud, flailing emotions come out. There should be no shaming, no blaming, no consequences, no punishing of any kind.

One such individual is the Complex Director of Marketing at The Westin and Le Meridien City Centre Bahrain, Cristalyn Pastrana. Most people who know Cristalyn well will agree that she likes everything done on time, with no excuses. She truly is an empowered woman with a “can do” attitude.
