BusinessFriendly Bahrain
Backed by a digitally-driven transformation agenda and a future-ready vision, Bahrain has cemented itself as an attractive destination for foreign investment owing to its business-friendly approach and value-adding investment opportunities, emerging as a leading contender on an international playing field.
Bahrain This Month recently sat down with the Kingdom’s Minister of Industry and Commerce, HE Abdulla bin Adel Fakhro, to delve deeper into how Bahrain managed to carve out a thriving ecosystem for investors, entrepreneurs, and innovators.
Congratulations on being appointed as Minister, a position you’ve held since November. How do you plan to promote Bahrain as a destination for foreign direct investment?
When it comes to attracting investment, it is not so much promoting Bahrain as it is nurturing mutual beneficial relationships with investors. As Minister, I work closely with the Bahrain Economic Development Board, seeking out high-impact projects and companies across key markets and geographies that fall under focused sectors of Bahrain’s national economy, and in turn, we advocate what we bring to the table to investors.
Beyond its strategic location serving as the gateway to the Gulf, with tax-free exporting and free trade agreements covering 22
countries – complete with a brand-new US Trade Zone – Bahrain offers businesses major advantages, including the most competitive operating costs and living expenses in the region to name a few. This has earned Bahrain its standing as the investment destination of choice for multinational companies, particularly in the manufacturing and logistics industry, which are seeking a reliable base to set up their operations or expand into the Middle East and North Africa region which is currently witnessing exponential growth. Of course, our human capital remains our biggest asset. With incredibly high literacy rates, Bahrainis are the most tech savvy, highly educated, and highly skilled workforce in region, aside from being fast learners by nature with a strong work ethic.
Taking all the above into consideration, for foreign companies looking to invest in
Bahrain, we can compete head-to-head with the best in the world.
What are the government’s plans to support the growth of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs)?
The small and medium enterprise (SME) sector holds significant importance, particularly in Bahrain, where more than 93 percent of private sector businesses fall under this category. Understanding the unique needs of micro-businesses and small-to-medium enterprises, we have implemented tailored initiatives to provide effective support and foster their growth in the market.
In my role as the Chairman of the SMEs Development Board, I am dedicated to setting SMEs on a path towards long-term success. Our mission at the SMEs Development Board
Bahrainthismonth.com 14 September 2023
is to enhance the establishment processes and capabilities of SMEs, enabling them to thrive in local, regional, and global markets. We aim to increase the contribution of SMEs to the gross domestic product, exports, and employment opportunities within the local labour market.
Since its establishment in 2017, the Board has made remarkable progress in implementing the initiatives outlined in our strategic plan. Through collaboration with relevant stakeholders in the kingdom, we have successfully accomplished 30 out of 44 initiatives. These initiatives focus on facilitating access to financing, providing market access, simplifying the business environment, developing skills, fostering innovation, and promoting growth to create economic value.
Are there any specific challenges facing the manufacturing sector on the island and what are the government’s plans to tackle these?
All sectors have their challenges and opportunities. Naturally, as a small island nation, one of the challenges facing Bahrain is the limited size of the local market in terms of scaling up manufacturing. However, Bahrain is unique to the region in terms of the export opportunities it provides, particularly in the manufacturing sector. We have several initiatives to support manufacturers to export their products to international markets, starting with the Gulf, then onwards to the MENA region and the rest of the world.
Beyond the free trade agreements with 22 countries, Bahrain provides manufacturers and mega-factories operating in Bahrain with support through curated schemes, the most recent of which was launched last July, known as the In-Country Value (ICV) programme. This aims to incentivise Bahraini factories to buy locally because we saw a gap in the market where a lot of goods which are manufactured in Bahrain are not being used up the supply chain.
Are there plans afoot to improve the ease of doing business in Bahrain?
In line with Bahrain’s digital transformation plans, we recently launched an upgraded version of the integrated electronic portal, Sijilat 3.0, which aims to facilitate the establishment of commercial projects or complete any requirements related to commercial activities for its users. The latest version includes a more unified portal, with enhanced functionalities in the likes of a comprehensive dashboard, faster lead times, and a more seamless experience, as well as a virtual customer service representative feature, where businesses can conduct online meetings with the requisite government and ministry employees. Ultimately, this new, cloud-based system enables local and
international investors alike to better manage their businesses from anywhere in the world, with increased efficiency, speed, and ease.
The Golden Licence, launched earlier this year, is another example of an initiative launched to build upon the growing investment attractiveness of Bahrain as a businessfriendly destination of choice. Awarded to large-scale projects with investment value exceeding USD50 million, or that demonstrate the creation of more than 500 jobs in Bahrain, the Golden Licence provides incentives and streamlined services to foreign and local businesses, comprising key privileges and benefits, including prioritised allocation of land for investments, infrastructure services and utilities; as well as streamlined access to government services.
What about the development of Bahrain’s digital economy? Is this a priority for your ministry?
Bahrain is home to many firsts in region, including being the first to drive rapid digital transformation initiatives and introduce several tech-friendly laws and regulations in the likes of open banking, one of the first to introduce a commercial 5G network, and home to the first AWS Data Centre Region. To date, 85 percent of government data in Bahrain has been transferred to the cloud. This marks a first for any country in the world. Backed by progressive regulatory authorities in the likes of the Central Bank of Bahrain that keep pace with global trends, issuing forwardthinking regulations to fuel Bahrain’s thriving ecosystem of innovation, Bahrain operates with agility and drive, giving rise to success stories with regional and global impact.
Naturally, remaining at the forefront of digital transformation is a top priority for the government of Bahrain. One of the key pillars under the Economic Recovery Plan comprises implementing tactical digital transformation initiatives across focused sectors, namely the non-oil sectors of financial services, manufacturing, ICT, logistics, and tourism. The strategy works towards establishing a world-class digital infrastructure in Bahrain by developing cybersecurity standards, attracting big-tech companies, and becoming a regional digital innovation hub.
For the Ministry of Industry and Commerce, our ultimate goal is to lead the change which the SME sector wants to see in the economy. This entails continuing to build the requisite digital infrastructure and investing in the right platforms, which allow SMEs and other businesses to truly scale up their businesses, at a lower cost, and a greater scale, for a more sustainable and profitable future ahead.
What are the latest updates on the US Trade Zone project known as the USTZ?
First launched in 2020, the US Trade Zone (USTZ) has been set up as a dedicated zone for US companies to set up, benefitting from Bahrain’s strategic location with 100 percent ownership over their businesses, complete with state-of-the-art infrastructure. We work closely with local government entities, and the US Embassy in Bahrain, to raise awareness on the project. The Zone competes with the best of the best on an international level, phase one is already well underway, where a government tender has recently been issued for the construction of basic infrastructure works, power grid, and sewage systems, which will be awarded by the fourth quarter of 2023 / 2024. As for phase two, approximately 1.11 million square meters of land, with the ability to expand in the future, will be dedicated towards industry and logistics companies.
We believe the USTZ extends beyond the opportunities it presents in terms of trade on the goods and services side, which has a positive impact on the Bahraini business community and US-based businesses operating out of the Zone. At the end the day, Bahrain has strong ties with the US, hosting the US Navy’s Fifth Fleet, and its logistical and operational support. This project forms another vital pillar that cements Bahrain’s commitment to enhancing bilateral economic, commercial, and industrial cooperation, particularly in manufacturing, logistics and distribution among American companies in local and regional markets.
Is there anything else you’d like to add?
We continue to form ambitious plans at the Ministry of Industry and Commerce to contribute to the growth of the national economy and are optimistic about Bahrain’s economic future ahead.
With several key projects already planned in the pipeline, we remain focused on continuing to attract impactful investment projects into Bahrain, and ultimately, supporting Bahraini companies to scale up, be it through advisory services to facilitate their access to markets or providing support programmes through the relevant authorities, in the likes of Bahrain’s Labour Fund, Tamkeen, which provide SME and larger corporations with the subsidised training opportunities to bridge gaps in skills and knowledge. This framework of support enables the SME sector to work towards growing their business faster, more profitably, and in a more sustainable manner. This in turn, contributes to the growth and diversification of the national economy, resulting in a mutually beneficial ecosystem that catalyses growth, for the benefit of all sectors of the economy.

LEADING LUXURY
Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts leader Jason Rodgers has been promoted to General Manager of Four Seasons Hotel Bahrain Bay after impressing in his previous role. Bahrain This Month sat down with him to find out more about his career and plans for the icon of the Kingdom’s hospitality scene.
Can you give our readers a short overview of your career to date?
Since I first left Australia, I’ve been with Four Seasons for 25 years! I’ve been fortunate enough to travel the world with them from Malaysia to Ireland to the UK, Mauritius, Qatar and now here in Bahrain and look forward to hopefully many years here.
From your own set of values and expertise, how do you think that Four Seasons will benefit from having you as a General Manager?
I think, especially in this part of the world, it’s about relationships. Having already been here in Bahrain for a number of years, it’s about nurturing those relationships and ensuring that we continue to deliver for our guests, for
our employees and also for our stakeholders. Having that stability and having that understanding of how the market works and how our team operates is very beneficial for me to continue in the role.
What do you think is the major aspect or factor of the Four Seasons brand which makes it stand above the rest?
I think it’s about the culture that we create within our team in any location that we operate. If you treat your employees well, they’ll then treat the guests well. How we look after and motivate our employees goes a long way to them delivering on the promise to our guests.
What first excited you about the hotel industry as a career?
Growing up, I moved around quite a bit. Both my parents were in the army in Australia, which is where the travel bug started. This career allows me to travel the globe and experience the world and all the different cultures and countries.
In such a demanding job, how do you maintain a work-life balance?
It’s not the easiest thing to do when working in a 24-7 industry! With technology, the way it is, you’re contactable at all times of the day and night, but it’s important to try and spend as much time connecting and being involved with the family too. I am lucky that I’ve got a very supportive wife and three amazing kids who have got to travel the world with me.
What do you see as the trajectory of the Bahrain hospitality industry over the next coming years?
It’s exciting with the new hotels that have recently opened, along with Exhibition World in Sakhir, and of course the plethora of international artists who are now performing here. All of this obviously drives tourism and helps us to put Bahrain on the map.
Do you have any further professional ambitions for Four Seasons in Bahrain?
The next big thing coming is our private residences, with 112 being built just across the water from the hotel. What we’re finding globally is that people not only want to stay at the Four Seasons, whether for business or pleasure, but they want to be able to live at Four Seasons as well. They will have direct access to the hotel’s facilities and it’s an exciting step in our evolution.

SERVICE
Leading with vision and expertise, Benoit-Joseph Metanomski brings his recipe for success to the table as he takes over as the new General Manager at the Mövenpick Hotel Bahrain.
Benoit-Joseph Metanomski may have landed in Bahrain just two months ago, but he’s already on a mission to take the island’s luxury boutique airport hotel to greater heights. His career first began when he shifted from the field of accountancy to doing a masters in hospitality with Vatel Paris.
“Accountancy was not really for me, I was more of a people’s person,” says Mr. Metanomski, who was more than happy to pursue his true calling. Little did he know his decision would then take him travelling to work in multiple continents.
Soon after his training began in France, he worked with two different hotels in Paris with Accor. “In 2006 I left for Ho Chi Minh City, Saigon, where I became front-office manager of Sofitel. That was the first time I moved overseas.” After three years in Vietnam, he had the opportunity to travel to Australia for two years. His career grew steadily and he became next in line to Director of Operations at the Sofitel Angkor Phokeethra Resort in Siem Reap, Cambodia, where he met his wife. Before moving to the Kingdom of Bahrain, his career took him to Thailand to work for the Pullman Phuket Arcadia Naithon Beach, followed by managing two properties in Bangkok and Khao Yai with Mövenpick. This is when he took on the role of Cluster General Manager and was tasked with rebranding a sprawling property on a golf course. He adds that he attributes his adaptability skills to being an avid traveller, which has positively affected the pace at which he settles into his new environment.
Drawing on his expertise with the Accor hotels thus far, Mr. Metanomski believes he is able to navigate the Mövenpick Hotel Bahrain successfully to something of a balance between an airport hotel and a resort. “I am quite knowledgeable with the brand and the way we operate such a property. The hotel was also renovated a few years ago, it’s a beautiful property and I feel it’s more than just a typical airport hotel,” says Mr. Metanomski.
He particularly envisions a scope for growth in the food and beverage sector, with a particular emphasis on incorporating wellness and lifestyle elements, “Considering the fact that there are 106 rooms, F&B is a big part of our business, between the allday dining, the famous brunches, the bar, the lobby, all the concepts that we can do around the pool.” Additionally, he believes his past expertise as Director of Operations will help him to work with his team to create new concepts, maintain high standards and propose new initiatives.
Solidifying the hotel’s position in the market amidst new competition, Mr. Metanomski says, “the goal is to remain strong,” flaunting its reputation with the best brunch in town and the advantage of being a smaller, more attractive boutique hotel.
“At the moment, our bar is undergoing improvements to enhance its liveliness. Our goal is to create a vibrant atmosphere seven days a week, offering unique experiences at various times throughout the day to cater to different preferences,” he says.
To conclude, he shares three words that would best describe the charming hotel: “Luxury, passion and excellence – this is Mövenpick Hotel Bahrain.”

With an outstanding global reputation and a history of being the stepping stone to the world’s top universities, St Christopher’s School Bahrain needs no introduction. However, what it also offers outside of a world-class education shows why it is the best choice for a successful future.
t Christopher’s firmly believes in an all-round education where academic pursuits are supported by expansive extracurricular opportunities.
S
The school’s wide-ranging programme of activities, societies, events and trips allow pupils to find alternative avenues of interest to explore and enjoy. By involving the pupils in this rich programme, it is hoped that their enjoyment of school life will be enhanced and personal skills developed.
There is a history of pupils developing a long-lasting interest and enthusiasm for their activities, continuing on to more advanced levels as they progress through and beyond the school. ECAs, therefore, make an important contribution to the all-round education that St Christopher’s provides. The rich extra-curricular programme gives pupils the opportunity to engage in art, sport, music, drama and community service.
The successful development of the school’s extensive extra-curricular programme led to the formation of the St Christopher’s SPARTA Academy providing high quality sports coaching to children of all ages, not just for St Christopher’s children, with more than 900 participants currently enrolled in SPARTA activities.
St Christopher’s boasts exceptional facilities including the latest generation, FIFA Standard artificial grass football pitch as well as a fully shaded seven-a-side pitch. The heated and
chilled air-conditioned indoor pool is the ideal setting for those learning to swim or looking to improve their technique and has space for parents to sit in comfort and watch their child progress. Furthermore, it features an exceptional gymnastics and dance programme with internationallyrecognised and decorated coaches. St Christopher’s sports teams compete and win local and regional competitions in football, volleyball, athletics and swimming annually, even breaking records!
Dramatic and musical performances, whether they are formal or informal, theatrical or musical, competitive or for entertainment purposes, all help to demonstrate and deepen the creative heart and soul of St Christopher’s. Each year, the school hosts two large-scale drama productions and several musical concerts and competitions, which draw in huge audiences. Last year, hundreds of students were involved in performances of We Will Rock You and Oliver as students aged 10 to 18 were part of the cast and crew. To complement this, each phase of the school
aims to provide a wide variety of performance opportunities through a planned programme of assemblies, concerts, cantatas and productions throughout the school year. The school leads the region in musical opportunities for its students, enabling its students to pursue their ambitions and talents to a professional competitive level. St Chris boasts an astounding 70-piece Symphony Orchestra and a 300-member School Choir, the only school in the region to have a symphony orchestra of such depth and quality. Furthermore, it is St Christopher’s innovation in music, having created the Young Musicians of the Gulf (YMoG) 25 years ago, and the St Christopher’s Music Festival, that sets St Christopher’s apart from other schools, not just in Bahrain, but in the region. Through a multitude of performance opportunities, national and regional competitions, international cultural concert trips, and our award-winning music teaching staff, St Christopher’s is the leading school for music in Bahrain.
The Arts are also strongly supported at St Christopher’s. Many students complete extracurricular courses and are strongly supported by Summer Schools, internships and online courses to strengthen their portfolios. This is in addition to several specialty activities which students of all ages enjoy at St. Christopher’s.

A Transformational Leader
Mr. Costa, who is from Portugal, studied sports science and coached several teams at the start of his career. As his love for education grew, he started working at schools before moving to the UK where he lived for 11 years. “It was there that I progressed my career and started my Master’s in education. I then moved to Spain, where I took up various leadership positions,” says Mr. Costa.
“While being a part of SEK Education Group*, which aims to realise each students’ potential to tackle 21st century challenges, I was offered the role of Director at Beacon School to help it grow further,” he states.
Prior to his move to the Kingdom, Mr. Costa spent a week in Bahrain to acclimatise himself with the school. “Bahrain’s community is very special and everybody has a solution-focused attitude centred on enhancing students’ lives and helping them succeed in society. This is very much in line with my attitude,” he says.
A Student-centric Approach
As a transformational leader, he hopes to encourage staff, teachers and non-teachers, to become even more efficient team players while cascading this attitude and drive to the students. “I believe in listening to our students and allowing them to voice their opinions because they are ultimately at the centre of our actions,” he says.
The school’s student body currently consists of 230 students representing 35 nationalities.
“Admissions are still open and we aim to have 275 students by the end of the year. We have small classes consisting of 18 students which enables us to provide them with tailored guidance,” he says.
One of the unique elements which sets Beacon School apart from others in the Kingdom is its partnership with CGC which works towards building students’ character. “For the last two years, we also provide the IB curriculum which focuses on exploring the learner IB profile, building character and different skills, in addition to improving students’ academics. This will play a key role in helping our students grow and gain entry to prominent universities,” he highlights.
This year also marks the opening of the prenursery, catering to two- and three-year-olds, meaning Beacon now educates children from two to 18 years of age. The school also augments technology into existing teaching methods and practices.
Facilitating Success
According to Maslow’s hierarchy of needs there are five categories of human needs
(physiological, safety, love and belonging, esteem and self-actualisation) which dictate an individual’s behaviour. “We need to have students who are happy, look after their wellbeing, and make sure that they are ready to learn. So, if we think about Maslow’s hierarchy, we need to cater to their main needs, socially, emotionally and academically in the beginning, so they may thrive,” he says.
2023 also marks the first year that the school will be having a graduating class of Year 12. “We have a counsellor that helps students look into universities not just in Bahrain, but also abroad. Tying in with the aims of SEK Group, we help our students to thrive and reach their university targets. That’s why our prime focus is on giving them the best offer in terms of subjects to help them achieve their goals,” he says.
An Expansion in the Works
The school is beginning the last phase of its construction soon and hopes to open its new swimming pool by the end of the year. “We will also be introducing drama classes that will increase the impact of our curriculum and our offer to the students,” he says.
To conclude, Mr. Costa has a message for parents and potential students: “Come and visit the school, see our unique offering for yourself!”
*SEK Education Group is made up of the SEK International Schools, which cater to over 7,000 students between the ages of four months to 18 years old from over 80 nationalities at their six schools in Spain (Madrid, Barcelona, Almería, Pontevedra), Dublin (Ireland), Les Alpes (France), Doha (Qatar), Riyadh (Saudi Arabia), Muscat (Oman) and Manama (Bahrain).
Each school, has its own unique geographical and cultural identity, all sharing the same values, vision, tradition of innovation, excellence and passion for learning. The Camilo José Cela University (UCJC), founded in the year 2000 as part of the SEK Education Group, which promotes entrepreneurship and innovation, technology and digitisation, social impact and well-being as its four strategic axes.

Make Your Day Extra Special
There are several finer details that go into planning and perfecting a wedding, so where does one start? Farah Baig shares some inspiration from weddings she’s attended and trends from around the world. Whether it’s cake, rings, flowers or ways to add a personal touch, you’ll find inspiration right here.
Layered Essentials from yallaCake!
Cake is undeniably an essential part of all our special days, and weddings are no exception! However, it’s obvious that you would like something quite unique on your big day. Yalla Cake, located in Janabiya, masterfully creates fully customised, artistic cakes in delicious flavours. Their skilled team can effectively bring your vision to life and custom design cakes for your bridal shower, engagement or wedding. Flowers and other elements can be entirely crafted by hand at Yalla Cake and even painted to match the theme of your wedding. Here are some of their wedding themed cakes that we loved, but feel free to follow them on Instagram using the handle @yallacake
Don’t Forget the Rings!
If you had to list just three essentials for a wedding, it would likely be the bride, the groom and the rings. It is, after all, their day. This year, we have our eyes on the exquisite solitaires and wedding bands from Van Cleef & Arpels. You can embark on a journey of love with their exquisite Bridal Collection, featuring solitaires, wedding bands, engagement rings, and diamond jewellery that encapsulate the essence of romance.
Dazzling jewellery pieces, such as the Fleurette and Snowflake creations enrich the timeless elegance of engagement rings. The brand’s wedding bands are illuminated by the brilliance of gold or the sparkle of diamonds. The creations can be worn alone, together with an engagement ring, or even with a second matching ring to immortalise the commitment made to your loved one. The Maison has designed its
creations to harmonise with elegance and comfort, with many combinations available to the future couple.
Interestingly enough, the Van Cleef & Arpels Maison was the result of love. In 1895, the Maison was born from the love story of Estelle Arpels, daughter of a gemstone dealer, and Alfred Van son of a lapidary. The celebration of emotions continues today through the Maison’s creations. Since its founding, the Maison has cultivated a passion for the highest quality diamonds and colored gemstones. The colour, cut, and weight of each solitaire’s stone is as unique as the love it symbolises.

A Bouquet You’d Love to Catch
Whether you’re walking down the aisle or getting ready for the wedding toss, a beautiful bouquet is essential. Maximalism was previously trending with statement-making bouquets, bright colours and large bows and embellishments, but things have taken a turn. The bouquet is no longer the focal point of the bride’s wedding day look but rather a demure accessory. Smaller bouquets, often in pastel shades, with less embellishments are delicately bound with ribbon or twine. Lush greenery and delicate flowers come together for a refreshing aesthetic which keep all eyes on the bride.
Add a Personal Touch
While we all might go through a standard checklist when planning our weddings, it’s essential that it doesn’t lack a personal touch. Think about things that might matter to you and your soon-to-be life partner. Couples all around the world have been incorporating elements into their wedding that are either quirky, heartfelt or nostalgic. Here are some that we love:
1. Have a book for wedding guests to leave a message for the happy couple. Or go with the modern take on this tradition and have a station where people can leave a video or voice note. This has been tried, tested and loved!
2. Have a disposable or polaroid camera at the tables of your closest friends and families so they can capture poignant and hilarious moments. You can then ‘see’ the wedding from their point of view.
3. Create a custom neon sign with a message that resonates with you, or opt for a cake topper that’s more personal.
This one is quite special. We’ve all lost people that are near and dear to us, and as seen at a friend’s wedding, you can have them right there with you. Print your favourite images of friends and family that you and your partner wish were there for your big day, place them in frames and decorate with flowers and/or candles for your ‘Wish You Were Here’ table.

ECONOMY MOTORING
Buying a car can be stressful. Whether it’s picking up a brand-new motor or finding a second-hand deal, it can be overwhelming. There’s a lot of choice, possibly too much of it, and there are many factors which can add to your anxiety. This month, we have a special feature on economy motoring in the Kingdom and below, Kristian Harrison discusses the best tips for buying a car on a budget.
Buying a car is often the second largest investment most people will make after buying a house. Therefore, there are various aspects to keep in mind when on the hunt. With a mixture of my own experiences and those of others, here a few tips that should help assuage your apprehensions and enable you to afford the right vehicle without dipping too deeply into your bank account
What can you afford?
If this seems obvious, you’d probably be surprised how far down ‘affordability’ lands on people’s priority lists. After all, shopping for a new car is exciting! But before the thrill of a test drive and that ‘new car smell’ influence an impulse purchase, I highly recommend taking the time to evaluate how much you can truly afford. As you think about your budget, consider all the costs of purchasing a car. Down payments, dealership fees and registration fees are just a few additional costs that will impact what you can afford and should be factored into your car-buying budget.
Further costs down the line
While it’s appropriate to focus on getting the best terms for your initial purchase, there are other expenses beyond your interest rate and monthly loan payment that are worthy of consideration. Interested in a larger vehicle model like a truck or a family-sized SUV? You’ll
want to consider how fuel costs will fit into your monthly expenses. Got your eye on a sleek new luxury sedan? Research the maintenance costs of that specific make and model. The cost and expected frequency of oil changes and other routine repairs might surprise you.
New
or used?
The age-old question. We’ve all heard the story about a new car losing a large chunk of its value as soon as you drive off out the showroom, but dealer perks like free services and additional warranties, plus a lower cost to insure and the latest technology when it comes to fuel efficiency can significantly close the gap when it comes to total cost of ownership.
Obviously, buying used brings an initial saving but be honest with yourself about how long you plan to keep this vehicle and how the terms of your loan match up with that plan. This will help you avoid the reverse situation where your vehicle is worth less than what
you owe when you might find yourself in the market again. Also, if possible, check its service history to ensure you aren’t buying a money pit that’s more trouble than it’s worth.
Don’t be afraid to negotiate
Western countries have an inherent fear of negotiation for the best price (and I’m very guilty of this myself!). However, in this part of the world it is almost expected and you can save significantly by merely haggling with the seller when buying a car. This includes negotiating the price of any vehicle you might be trading in.
Read any contract thoroughly
This may seem obvious, but it’s incredibly important! Before you sign on the dotted line, it’s generally wise to sleep on it and be sure you’re only buying what you need. This will also give you time to read the contract in full and make sure the payments will work with your budget.

Say ‘Hello’ to!
The 2024 Hyundai Azera is a luxury sedan with distinctive modernity, arriving fresh off the production line with high-quality and exclusive features, providing ample luxury at a lower cost than many of its counterparts. Kristian Harrison took it for a spin to find out more.
Hyundai has been killing it in the design department as of late, and the latest generation of the Azera is no exception. It has long been established as Hyundai’s flagship sedan, but never before has it looked and felt this good, paying homage to its predecessors but redefining it with modern touches.
One of the big defining features of the new Azera is the ‘Seamless Horizon Lamp,’ which is a fancy name for an LED lightstrip that runs above the ‘parametric jewel’ grille and headlights but below the bonnet of the car. All this jargon essentially means the Azera has a sleek, ultra-modern look and it wouldn’t be too much of a stretch to suggest it landed from Space.
The minimalistic sides of the sedan add to this effect, with its pillarless windows and the flush-mounted door handles which pop out conveniently at the push of the unlock button. Inside, the throwback steering wheel takes its inspiration from the first-generation model’s single-spoke wheel. Physical buttons have
been kept a minimum throughout, but I did like the Drive Mode toggle being a button in the centre of the wheel rather than a toggle on the side or near the gear stick.
Behind the wheel, the dashboard features a widescreen digital instrument cluster and there’s also a 12-inch Head-up Display showing a plethora of extra information should you need it.
It’s hard not to feel wrapped by the ambient lighting that spans from the lower edges of the door trims and front dashboard. The layout of the dash allows for a large screen to span from the driver’s view and into the 12.3-inch infotainment panel which transitions into an interactive lighting section that flows into the passenger side of the dash. Below the centre panel is another 10.25-inch touchscreen purely for climate control and other air conditioning options.
As for materials, there are some patterns that appear throughout the interior that Hyundai
says are traditionally Korean, along with plenty of lines, flourishes and large swathes of Nappa leather.
The first few minutes of my experience on the road with the Azera was a cacophony of sensors and noises pinging at me from all directions. Whether it was Forward CollisionAvoidance Assist, Blind-Spot CollisionAvoidance, Rear Cross-Traffic Collision Avoidance, Safe Exit Assist, Steering Assist … there’s a lot of ‘avoidance’ involved. With the track record that Bahrain’s roads have, you may want to turn these on and off to your own desires as there are some occasions where these assists can be almost too helpful. In particular, Lane Keeping Assist fights against you turning the wheel to change lane when sometimes a quick manoeuvre is needed.
The drive itself is lovely, though. Slipping into Sport mode (it would be remiss not to!), the 3.5-litre GDi engine belches out 295hp and 359Nm of torque to really propel you down the road with only the slightest of delays after pressing the accelerator.
The suspension and noise-cancelling cabin creates a smooth, comfortable ride and coupled with the panoramic sun roof, wide windows and advanced features at the luxurious touch of a screen, this is another stark reminder that Hyundai is on top form.

A BOLD CROSSOVER
Chinese automakers have been making a big splash in the Kingdom over the past few years, putting in the hard yards to earn a solid reputation for both quality and cost. One of the cars catching our attention with its recent launch was the GAC Emkoo. It was the size of a compact crossover, but priced far more competitively. The Emkoo’s design also promised a car that had both style and substance. Luckily, Bahrain This Month was granted the keys, so Kristian Harrison took it out for a spin.
GAC’s design language has undergone a revolution in recent years and the brand’s new EMKOO SUV is probably the boldest recipient of its self-proclaimed ‘diamond cut’ philosophy.
Opting for a frameless grille consisting of sharp thin lines assembled into a chevron pattern, the EMKOO carries plenty of outlandish style which is certain to draw eyes on the road. The EMKOO’s abundance of chiselled surfaces and particularly the front detailing, including daytime running lights that cut downwards and sideways and never exceed 2cm in width, is particularly aggressive and sets the tone for the rest of the car.
Looks are subjective and might split opinion, but I rather liked it. It’s bold, daring, and certainly not a car you will lose in a car park, either. I caught a few people casting envious sideways glances while stopped at traffic lights, and that’s all that any car aficionado wants, right?
The interior of the EMKOO SUV feels premium. The soft-touch panels breathe quality and the dashboard itself is an exercise in effective minimalism. There’s not much in the way of buttons, which is a good thing as it reduces clutter and the 14.6-inch infotainment touch screen is simple and informative as a gateway to all the features you’ll ever need.
I did wish, however, that the steering wheel pulled out further than its maximum. To drive
comfortably and avoid having to straighten my arms, I had to compromise by sitting close to the wheel and thus cramp my leg room. Coupled with the high windowsills meaning that your left elbow doesn’t rest naturally on it, it could provide comfort issues for those like myself who are above six foot.
Powering the EMKOO is a 1.5-litre turbo engine, providing 177hp and 270Nm of torque. Shifting is courtesy of a seven-speed dualclutch transmission. Power delivery is smooth, albeit more with a gradual surge than one sudden sharp infusion. However, I did note that the throttle response is a touch on the sharp side, with small inputs translating into big lunges if you’re not careful.
When it comes to handling, the EMKOO excelled. It felt tight and sharp around the bends with not much of the way of roll. It inspired confidence around longer corners, whilst the steering provides strong feel and feedback for the tighter turns of Bahrain’s city roads.
Ultimately, the EMKOO has a lot going for it with those bold looks, a generous spec sheet and a healthy array of tech. Book your test drive at the Tas’heelat Automotive Company’s GAC Motor showroom in Sitra and try it out for yourself.

EXPLORING AUTHENTIC AFRICAN FLAVOURS
The vibrant restaurant Kula has been the talk of the town since it opened its doors this year. Kula’s claim to fame is its ability to take diners on a culinary journey through Africa. Edwin D’Souza discovers its exciting new Brunch menu.
Kula, located at Riffa’s RUW Corner, has mesmerised foodies in the Kingdom with its extensive menu featuring mouthwatering signature dishes from Morocco, South Africa, Kenya, Uganda, Mozambique, Zanzibar and more. We were greeted with a joyous “Welcome to Africa!” as we walked through the doors of this beautifully decorated restaurant – the start of our journey relishing African flavours.
As part of our starters, we were served a Roosterkoek (chapatti) board that consisted of fluffy and warm chapatti – the perfect vessel for some delicious butter, apricot jam, aged cheddar cheese and honey. This was followed by Moroccan Matbucha which was a tantalising blend of tomatoes, capsicum tartare, garlic and spices. It was served with toasted home-baked baguette with a spread of confit garlic and balsamic vinegar that perfectly complemented the tangy and spicy elements of the dish. Each bite was a delight, and after feasting on our starters, we couldn’t wait to tuck into the mains.
For the main course, we started off with the Moroccan Eggs which were an absolute delight packed with a fusion of flavours. The dish consists of eggs scrambled with a fine blend of spicy tomatoes and eggplant – a treat for the eyes and tastebuds. Delicate dollops of labneh served as a creamy accompaniment to this dish which we savoured with more freshly grilled Roosterkoek.
What came next was a true masterpiece – Kula’s Steak and Chips. This consisted of a Black Angus minute steak which was cooked to perfection, tender, and full of flavour. ‘Chakalaka’ beans made for a very welcome side in addition to the freshly-fried, crispy hand-cut fries. The combination of the succulent
steak, the satisfying crunch of the chips and the fried eggs made for a truly memorable dining experience.
Amidst the blissful brunch we were served refreshing beverages. The Slush of Sunshine made with passionfruit and mango with a hint of cinnamon was refreshing and exceptionally tangy. The Pomelo Mocktail, which was theatrically served with a smoke bubble, was a delightfully zingy mix of cranberry juice, grapefruit juice and strawberry purée. Last but certainly not least was the Nanasi a tropical pineapple and blue lagoon mocktail. Each sip was pure respite from a hot summer’s day!
Ending our brunch on a high note, we were presented with the KULA brunch feast, which was a platter of classic South African meaty dishes including Black Angus minute steak, Black Angus short ribs and lamb chops complemented by two crowd favourites: Pap (cornmeal porridge) and boerewors (traditional beef sausage). Sautéed mushrooms, fried eggs and a tomato and onion sauce made this platter a festival of flavour. This dish was a true representation of African comfort food at its finest and a must-have for meatlovers!
Whether you are a fan of spicy and tangy flavours, earthy and comforting dishes, or would just love to experience African culture, you’ll find that Kula is the place to be for a memorable glimpse into the diverse flavours of Africa. I know I’ll be back! For more information, follow @kula_bh on Instagram.

UNDER THE SEA!
Ramee Grand Hotel & Spa, located in the bustling Seef district, recently launched a spectacular Seafood Night, much to the thrill of diners in Bahrain. There’s plenty that makes this experience special including nine live cooking stations featuring a multitude of cuisines. Farah Baig discovers more.
Ramee Grand Hotel & Spa recently celebrated its 10-year anniversary marking a decade of excellence. So, I was naturally thrilled to hear that the hotel was launching an exciting seafood night at its restaurant Lemon Tree. Could they tick all the right boxes with this experience?
On entering the restaurant venue it’s clear that the team has pulled out all stops to make the experience memorable. From the tabletops to the ceiling, the outlet is decorated to reflect the theme. Live entertainment courtesy of the talented pianist and singer adds to the ambience. What grabs your attention, though, is the myriad seafood options including sand lobsters, fresh mussels, shrimp, calamari, salmon and crabs aside from regional favourites safi, sheri, hammour and king fish.
To begin, I plated a selection of hot appetisers including Seafood Arancini, Shrimp Coconut and Dynamite Shrimp which were hot and crispy. Freshly-made clam chowder topped with cheese served in a toasty, hot bread bowl followed. I stirred in the melted cheese and relished every spoonful of what was the very definition of comfort food.
The team’s creativity when it comes to ingredients is evident at the colourful canapé and sushi counters. Each was artistically put together and a treat for the eyes and palate. The poached shrimp and cream cheese canapé had to be my favourite though. At the sushi counter, the freshness of the fish was clear. Finer elements such as toasted sesame seeds and dollops of sauces complemented the traditional soy sauce, gari (pickled ginger) and wasabi. The large assortment of freshly baked bread, cheeses and cold cuts proved to be the cherry on top!
Much to my delight, you can choose your seafood and have it cooked to your liking in an Arabic, Indian or Asian style among others. I opted for my selection to be grilled and was impressed by the presentation. Every morsel is scrumptious but I’d be amiss not to mention the sand lobsters and generous fillet of salmon which were cooked to perfection – moist and simply delicious.
What makes this seafood night even more distinct is its impressive nine live cooking stations including a pizza, pasta, taco and stir fry station covering a range of cuisines. Baked in a traditional wood fired oven, my seafood pizza topped with succulent shrimp and calamari was just divine, especially the crust!
While we’d already eaten our fill, I was curious about the hot mains and so I sampled their Samak Machboos and Shrimp Biriyani. Each was flavourful and a clear indicator of the culinary team’s exceptional skills. To top off my experience, I had a delightful chocolate cake and some fresh fruit.
Seafood is a fine indulgence when it comes to the world of gastronomy, but it has to be done just right. Freshness, cooking time and condiments all play an essential role in perfecting each dish and determining just how enjoyable your meal is going to be. Needless to say, this Seafood night ticked all the boxes!
Lemon Tree’s Seafood Night takes place every Thursday from 6pm to midnight. Follow@lemontree.bh or @rameegrand.bh for more information.

Blur The Ballad of Darren
Verdict:
A listenable pop record with strong choruses.
What’s the story?
The Ballad of Darren is the ninth studio album by English rock band Blur. The album’s songs were written by frontman Damon Albarn in 2022 while on tour with Gorillaz, and composed by Albarn and the rest of the band. Its title refers to Darren “Smoggy” Evans, the band’s longtime bodyguard. To Albarn, the record signifies “an aftershock, reflection and comment on where we find ourselves now”. He claimed the album reflects their generation but also “has enough of the modern world in it to kind of be relatable to people younger as well.”
Worth a listen?
Early on in The Ballad of Darren, the unexpected and understated Blur reunion album, Albarn sings “We have lost the feeling that we thought we’d never lose,” a line that could easily be interpreted as the vocalist addressing his bandmates. Albarn spends the album pondering severed connections and vanished spaces, sentiments that could be read either as mourning a personal loss or as a meditation on a postpandemic world, yet The Ballad of Darren doesn’t feel precisely sad, not in the way Damon’s solo albums often can. Blur gives Albarn’s songs depth and dimension, resulting in an album that feels age-appropriate without being stodgy: it’s mature and nuanced, cherishing the connections that once were taken for granted but now seem precious.
Greta Van Fleet Starcatcher
Starcatcher find Greta Van Fleet making a bid for street cred: they’re stripping away the studio gloss so they can stand on their merits as a rock and roll band. The basic tracks are bashed out live in the studio, then given minimal overdubs for colouring. The lack of polish on Starcatcher does make Greta Van Fleet seem leaner, but not meaner: there’s some brawn in the rhythms, particularly in the furious blast of “Runway Blues,” but it often feels like all the power on the album is produced by pushing the levels to 11. All of the compositions are much too much, lurching from riff to riff as if the group wanted to cram each cut with as many ideas as possible.
Post Malone Austin
As close to being selftitled as possible, this is the most authentic and vulnerable Post Malone has sounded to date. Finally embracing the guitar-based, rock side of his personality, it’s bound to be polarising. On one hand, this set is a gift for fans of such poppolished hits as “Circles” and “Sunflower” (as well as his online rock covers, like the Nirvana tribute he did in 2020). Melodic and heartfelt, Austin surprises at nearly every turn, whether that’s by an unexpected sonic detour or the simple fact that Post Malone has never sounded this fearless.
Neil Young Chrome Dreams
In the ‘70s, Neil Young got in the habit of creating some of his best work and keeping it to himself. He created an album titled Chrome Dreams that would have a highly uncommon trajectory for the next 40-odd years. Made up of 12 songs recorded between 1974 and 1977, many of which became some of the most loved in Young’s repertoire, Chrome Dreams was considered for release in 1977, but was instead reconfigured. Bootleggers got hold of the recordings and issued many different illicit versions of Chrome Dreams over the years, and Young even went so far as to make Chrome Dreams II in 2007, when the first chapter of the series was still living primarily as an obscure collector’s item traded between the more obsessive of his fans. The first officially released version of Chrome Dreams is full of slight variations and differences in now-familiar songs, standing as one of the more famous ‘lost albums’ in rock history.

GREAT READS
Jarmo T. Kotilaine is one of the Kingdom’s greatest thinkers in the field of economics, acting as Chief Economic Advisor of the Bahrain Economic Development Board (EDB) since 2012. In his latest book, summarised below, he covers a forward-looking economic history of the GCC region and reviews its unlikely development journey from exceptionally challenging initial conditions into one of the wealthiest economic blocks in the world.
Sustainable Prosperity in the Arab Gulf: From Miracle to Method
by Jarmo T. Kotilaine
The Gulf region is exceptionally positioned to rise to great strategic importance in the emerging multipolar world order. Capitalising on its location in the embrace of the world’s two fastest-growing continents as well as its world class connective infrastructure and attractive lifestyle, the GCC has successfully positioned itself as a global hub with the ability to pivot between different geographies.
The book opens with an historical overview of the resource base, competitive advantages and strategic limitations of the Arabian Peninsula. A region characterised by an extremely harsh climate but a strategic location, it was able for centuries to sustain a small location population thanks to external trade and the revenues generated by pearl fishing.
The sudden collapse of pearling in the 1930s delivered an existential blow to the Gulf economy. However, the almost simultaneous
oil discoveries starting in 1932 unexpectedly allowed the region to embark on one of most spectacular races to economic modernity ever documented. A population-poor region with minimal social infrastructure emerged as the lynchpin of the global energy markets and saw its population expand 15-fold.
The extraordinary speed of development created multiple imbalances that have proven extremely resistant to change. Attempts to reduce the dominance of oil through diversification were complicated by dependence on the income it generated for capital. The race to modernity pulled in a growing army of expatriate workers and experts. Private businesses developed a systemic dependency on low-cost foreign labour while willing locals found employment in the public sector. Efforts to create new mechanisms for pooling and allocating capital have been complicated by the relatively modest
scale of non-sovereign institutional investors. This has perpetuated the vulnerability of the Gulf economy to the oil cycle.
The oil-driven development model of the past several decades has now largely exhausted itself. The global energy transition and diminishing returns to infrastructure investments underscore the urgency of a fundamental overhaul of the GCC development model. The formula for success must be underpinned by productivity-led growth.
The Gulf region is embarking on its paradigm shift at a challenging time, facing a multitude of economic and security risks both in the global and in the regional context. While success is by no means a foregone conclusion, the region boasts a long history of adaptation of extreme conditions. Moreover, it now commands significant assets that position it well for the challenges ahead.

Net interest income at USD241.9 million was 67 percent higher than the prior year, attributed to an efficient balance sheet structure, enhanced lending margins, and the rising interest rate environment. This partnership is a key step towards this goal, supporting the development of the labour market in Bahrain, shaping and mentoring the leaders of tomorrow,” he adds.
Thinksmart’s Group CEO, Ahmed Al Hujairy, states: “It is a proud moment for us to be partnering with KHK Sports under our Forsati Project - a key project in partnership with Microsoft and Tamkeen for young Bahrainis which will enable them to upgrade their skills with the latest job role-based certifications.”

FINANCIAL RESULTS
OVER 14,000 CITIZENS EMPLOYED DURING FIRST HALF OF 2023
Minister of Labour and Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Labour Market Regulatory Authority (LMRA), HE Jameel bin Mohammad Ali Humaidan, has stated that 14,163 citizens have been employed between January and June at the rate of 71 percent within the economic recovery plan, which amounts to 20,000 hiring operations annually.
This has been achieved by attracting more
job-generating investments, enhancing the work environment, diversifying training and qualification policies, and providing many advantages and incentives for the private sector so Bahrainis are the preferred choice for recruitment in the labour market.
“In addition, the number of citizens benefiting from various training programmes reached 7,237 trainees, which constitutes 72 percent of
the declared goal of training 10,000 Bahrainis annually as part of the Economic Recovery Plan,” he states.
Wages in the private sector witnessed an increase of 6.3 percent, following the launch of several initiatives aimed at increasing the wage support and improving the level of wages of new employees in the private sector.
BAHRAIN REAL ESTATE MARKET MOMENTUM IN Q2 2023
According to the Savills Q2 2023 Bahrain Property Market in Minutes update, Bahrain’s economy saw an increase of 4.9 percent in 2022, the country’s strongest growth in more than nine years, propelled by non-oil sectors that remained robust in 2022.
Head of Professional Services at Savills in Bahrain, Hashim Kadhem, says: “Bahrain’s residential and commercial property sectors have benefitted from a raft of positive policy measures, including the Economic Recovery Plan, the issuance of the Golden Licence, and the national jobs plan.”
In the Residential Sales Market, capital values have remained at the same level during the second quarter, and rates are estimated at BHD603 per sqm. Where Office Sales and Rental is concerned, rental prices have increased by 1.6 percent Q-o-Q across the high-end segment, at an average value of
BHD6.5 per sqm due to the ongoing relocation of corporate occupiers to grade A developments. Despite the stability of rents across the mid-end segment on a quarterly basis, they have increased annually by 9.1 percent at an estimated BHD6 per sqm. “This annual increase in rents signifies the scarcity of space across the high-quality developments as well as the ongoing demand from corporate occupiers to lease space across such projects,” says Associate Director – Research, Savills Middle East, Swapnil Pillai.
Retail rental rates have fallen by an average of seven percent to BHD10 per sqm against the backdrop of the sector’s ongoing recovery from the effects of the pandemic.
Furthermore, the Bahrain Economic Development Board (EBD) has taken several measures to diversify the economy away from oil, and there has been a significant effort to attract industrial tenants and operators into the Kingdom. This has provided greater stability to rents in the industrial warehousing sector with the average monthly rent for medium units currently at BHD 2.8 per sqm, and BHD 2.7 per sqm for large units.

Your Plan is your
Superpower
Business expert, Pria Masson, highlights the three main reasons why you require an effective business plan for your company strategy, for your bank loan or for an investor.
“What does not get measured, does not get done”. I recently heard this statement, and it has struck a chord. How often, do we all think about things, plan (in our heads) and start executing ad-hoc? This holds as true for our personal lives as it is for our businesses – and in business, it can have a very far-reaching impact.
What happens if you don’t have a formal plan?
It may seem like you don’t need a formal business plan written up until someone asks you for it. However, when someone does in fact ask for it, and you do not have one, that’s when the chaos begins. Because, very likely, mistakes will have been made in execution. Expenses may have been made from accounts not linked to the company, money from personal sources may have been used in the company, etc. Or the ‘plan’ in mind during a verbal conversation, may not add up with the plan seen on paper. When you scramble, you use band-aid solutions for large problems and that’s where skeletons start to build in closets. At some point, those very closets are always opened – and you may be scrambling again.
What about loans?
Banks follow a low-risk strategy – what does that mean for you? It means that you need to show that your business is low risk. Your
riskiness is linked with a higher interest payment, something no one wants. How do you avoid that? With a prepared plan prior to execution. So that, risks are foreseen, minimised, and fixed in timely manners. The more band aids you seem to have used, the higher your risk profile becomes. This is assuming you meet the basic requirements of stable income, low debt, repayment capacity etc. Bankers assign risks and lend based on the entrepreneur as much as they base it on meeting laid down listed criteria. Minimise your entrepreneur risk by planning and creating an honest business plan. And finally, what happens with equity investors?
If you think you may ever want equity investors, create a plan as soon as possible. Equity investors are partners and have a right (and obligation) to review the entire history of your company. They will open every single closet that is closed and will find whatever needs to be found. They need to know who they are partnering with and leave no stone unturned. So, a planned, measured goal-oriented company, with an honest business plan – that’s the dream. The reality is, if you have a plan, you deviated and then made a new plan, that’s usually fine too. Honestly, disclosures and the
willingness to track, measure and recalibrate, that’s what gets funding usually (apart from the basic idea, market etc.). If you have a patchwork plan, created six months before meeting them – they know. It’s not a no-go, just a red flag.
Of all the reasons above, the main reason you need a plan is because you need a path to walk on. You need to know where you are going and what you are aiming to reach. The path may change, and the path may bring surprises, but you have the basic guidance and scaffolding it provides. It may be a boring activity, but it saves you a lot of future band aids.

TAKING THE LEAD
Bahrain’s marketing and communications industry has empowered many women to become leading professionals in the region and beyond. Ingy Mekkawy was recently appointed as Marketing Manager for First Motors in the Kingdom, and spoke to Woman This Month about her career and first major role outside of Egypt.
Afterobtaining a Bachelor’s degree in Management and Information Systems from the French University in Egypt, Ms. Mekkawy obtained two Master’s degrees from the University of Nantes, France, the first in Marketing and Consumer Behaviour and the second in Project Management.
She initially climbed the ladder in the retail industry before discovering her passion for the automotive industry, joining Nissan’s regional office in North Africa as a digital and communications executive, working her way up to become an assistant marketing manager for a number of other brands before spending the last five years as the marketing and customer relationship manager for Škoda in Egypt.
“I found a passion in understanding customers’ needs and trying to tailor suitable offers for them,” she says about her decision to pursue a career in the field.
“I remember during my first job, the team was discussing an idea for a book signing session and I suggested doing a special display section for the newly-released book. I was thrilled to see all the books being sold on release day. It clicked for me right then that this was the right path to follow,” she says of the rewarding experience.
Having recently arrived in the Kingdom, Ms. Mekkawy is excited to get started in a new market. “Bahrain is a very beautiful country and easy to settle in, especially for expats,” she explains. “Bahraini people are well known for being generous and the hospitality here is amazing, helping me to settle in without any issues.
“I am lucky to be able to join such a successful company as First Motors, which represents two of the best international brands worldwide, Hyundai and Genesis. I understand that I have a lot to learn about the market and customers’ behaviour in Bahrain, but I hope I can be of added value for the organisation by utilising my previous experience in different companies.
“I believe that in a small market like Bahrain, at least compared to Egypt, the competition is tougher, and therefore a good professional should always plan ahead, react fast and understand customers’ requirements in a faster way,” she says.
A number of outstanding marketing professionals in Bahrain have helped to break down barriers and reduce gender disparity within the industry. Ms. Mekkawy believes that the challenges in the field are the same for both men and women and that the only way to overcome any hardship that may arise is to work as hard as possible and to show your dedication to your profession.
When asked to share her advice for your women wishing to pursue a career in Marketing, she says: “What I would say to other female marketers and other young women interested in pursuing a career in the industry is simply to believe in yourselves and that you can do the perfect job if you dedicate yourselves appropriately.”

MASTERING MONEY!
Money, and managing it, is an essential part of one’s life. Parenting columnist Ouiam El Hassani shares her tips on how to teach children about money.
Money patterns observed in early life are a primary source driving financial decision-making in adulthood. As a child’s primary educator when it comes to money, it is important that parents teach a healthy relationship with finances. By the age of seven, most children have grasped how to recognise the value of money and to count it. They also understand that money can be exchanged for goods, as well as what it means to earn money and what income is.
As we are living in a rapidly changing world, shaped by social media companies, influencers and sophisticated marketing campaigns that target young people, spending is much easier than saving. This is a daunting reality for parents worldwide who worry about their children falling into bad spending habits. However, there are a number of tips parents can use to educate their children about the value of money and foster a healthy relationship with money from an early age.
Here are Ouiam’s top tips on educating your child on the value of money:
1. Teach children that money is only a tool
It is important to demonstrate to children that while money is important, it is a means to an end, not the end itself. For example, one person might have lots of hammers but never uses them for good. Another person might have one hammer but builds lots of great things to make themselves and others happy. The same with money. It is not about how much you have; it is about what you choose to do with it that is most important.
2. Allow children to earn money
Allow children to earn pocket money by having to do chores, among other things. Help them come up with a list of potential money-earning jobs they can do on their own and in their own time.
3.
Talk about money in a positive way
It is so important to discuss money with children in an age-appropriate manner and not shun it as a taboo or uncomfortable topic. If children grow up thinking money is a difficult or awkward subject, this might result in them having feelings of guilt, shame or fear later in life when it comes to money matters, causing unnecessary anxiety.
Children should also avoid hearing things such as “money doesn’t grow on trees” or “we can’t afford that”. If children grow up with the impression that money is bad, they are much less likely to ask questions, want to learn more or seek help when they need it.
Womanthismonth.com 76 September 2023
4. Distinguish between needs and wants
It is important for children to understand the difference between “wants” and “needs” because everything they desire might feel as if it is a “need”. Not only does this teach children to start thinking about the effects of delaying gratification, it also gives them the power to make choices regarding their purchases by considering the consequences
5. Encourage them to be autonomous
Children crave autonomy and doing things “my way” from a very young age, so, the best way to teach them to have a positive relationship is to empower them to make their own decisions about money. Let children make mistakes. Maybe they’ll spend all their money on something silly, but do not bail them out and make sure they learn their own lesson!
Giving them a steady allowance they can budget and save allows them to make decisions on a smaller scale in their childhood that can grow to become habits they have for life.
6. Be a role model
In the formative years, children learn by watching things and people around them. Children may adopt the attitudes and behaviour that parents demonstrate at home. So, the starting point is to make sure you- the parent- are able to demonstrate a healthy and positive behaviour with your money and that your words and actions are in alignment.

Rome, known as the Eternal City, is a popular destination for couples and honeymooners due to its 28-century rich history, which includes world-renowned architecture, priceless paintings and sophisticated piazzas. Being home to the Pantheon, Roman Forum and Vatican, it’s no surprise that the city is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. At the heart of the city, the stunning Roman amphitheatre known as the Colosseum is a must-visit. Since its construction, the Colosseum has remained the largest standing amphitheatre and the largest ancient amphitheatre in the world.

There’s no denying that Maldives is one of the most popular honeymoon destinations for those seeking opulent and romantic experiences. The island nation’s resorts offer a variety of luxurious experiences, including candlelit dinners on private sandbanks and wooden suites on stilts accessible only by boat.
The choice of island depends on your preference for a luxurious honeymoon, as most offer a dreamy, laid-back holiday surrounded by stunning blue scenery. Some of the favourites include Soneva Jani, a glamorous hangout with some of the largest villas and enormous private pools, and Joali, which combines designer aesthetics with relaxing boho vibes.
If you and your loved one are on the hunt for an epicentre of flavour and adventure, we’ve got just the thing for you. Tokyo boasts the maximum number of Michelin stars in any city due to their vast restaurants that take pride in using the finest of ingredients. What’s something you are grateful for today?
I’m grateful for having good health. It’s important to take care of our mind and body by meditating, being active, socialising, and doing what we love.
What is your dream holiday destination?
I am an advanced scuba diver; so, when I think of dream destinations, they’ll have an underwater life to explore, clear water beaches, nature, and warm temperatures. A few places on my list are Palau, Vanuatu Islands and Maldives amongst so many others!
What is a short-term and long- term goal of yours?
My short-term goal is to make INND’OR Luxury Interior Design a successful business. A long-term goal is not ‘losing my hair’ and keeping good health while making the business successful.
What’s your favourite childhood memory?
My dad is an avid traveller and took us on family trips to explore the world. I have great memories of trips: singing on road trips, the new food tried, and the places we explored together.
InHerShoes
Owner and Interior Design Director of INND’OR Luxury Interior Design, Sabina Torres, defines herself as a “Luxury Interior Designer who finds beauty anywhere whilst enjoying her passion for photography and travelling”. On a personal and professional level, she is an avid sharer of good experiences and blissful moments. Let’s take a walk in her shoes!
Name three musicians we’d find on your playlist: My playlists are so diverse, I listen to classical, Latin, pop, kizomba, house and other genres; most of the time I add songs I like to my playlists without paying attention to who the artist is. If I had to name three artists that have remained in my playlists for a long time: Ludovico Einaudi, Hans Zimmer, and my Colombian compatriot Shakira.
What was the name of a special pet and what made him/her special?
Sushi is my cat soul-mate that will remain in my heart forever; a stray cat I adopted that learnt quickly to adapt to house life, including going to bed at 11pm. Don’t ask me how, but every night she’d wait on the bed for me at sharp 11 o’clock, not making a noise until the morning alarm went off. This, and another 99 reasons made her unique and special.
Which venue did you find most interesting to design and why?
The 4th most expensive mansion in the world (estimated worth of over USD450 million). Working on its interior design, styling and decoration for three years was like a dream come true. The quality of the work produced was outstanding, and everything to the smallest of the items was specially designed for our clients.
What do you draw inspiration from as a designer?
Keeping all your senses open and paying attention to detail plays a big role in being inspired by anything in life; to name a few sources of inspiration: travelling, nature, Pinterest, learning from other people’s designs and skillsets, learning manufacturing techniques, etc.
