Palais Garnier Opera House By Jessica Infantino Trumble
Considering the average lifespan of a theatre in the 19th century was 13 years because of the likelihood of a fire, it’s amazing that the Palais Garnier is still standing 150 years later.
N
amed after its architect Charles Garnier, Paris’ jewel box of an opera house sits proudly atop Avenue de l’Opera in the 9th arrondissement, anchoring the bustling boulevard like a temple to the arts. While its scrumptious exterior is enough to make anyone passing by stop in their tracks, its interior rivals even that of Versailles. This was very much intentional as the opera was the place to see and be seen (and I’m not talking about the actual show). Men and women, young and old alike had a role to play as actors of the public space, and the Palais Garnier was designed as such. While a visit will give you a small glimpse inside this world, I learned that there’s a certain richness that only a guided tour can provide – including access to the nearly 2,000seat auditorium that’s draped in red (because it was believed women looked more beautiful on red) and gilded in gold (naturally), set under a glittering chandelier and Chagall’s (controversial) painted ceiling. Rather than divulging all of the Palais Garnier’s secrets, here are five of my favourite facts about its fascinating history.
1. The opera house was built for
Napoleon III but he never actually attended. Following an assassination attempt at the Salle Le Peletier in 1858, Napoleon’s security and comfort were a priority when conceiving the new Palais Garnier. Such features included a separate entrance and special box for the emperor. Even the Avenue de l’Opera was designed as a straight line from the Louvre where Napoleon lived to the theatre, knocking down everything in between to make way for the new road. But thanks to the Franco-Prussian War, Napoleon was ousted and sent into exile until his death in 1873, two years before the completion of the Palais Garnier in 1875.
2. Its interior is decorated with 30 8 THE MARKET PLACE
types of marble from 8 different countries.

Despite being best friends with Gustave Eiffel, Garnier hated iron and covered the grand staircase area with marble to mask the metal. He spared no expense in public spaces like this (the balconies, the chandeliers and all of those mirrors for one last look before entering the theatre) and the hall-of mirrors-esque grand foyer. It was all part of the show, after all. Yet it’s interesting to note that only 2.5 kilos of gold was used in the entire building.
3. The Palais Garnier inspired the Phantom of the Opera.
Rooted is both fact and fiction, the opera house provides the setting for Gaston Leroux’s 1910 novel The Phantom of the Opera and subsequent works including Andrew Lloyd Webber’s 1986 musical of the same name. While partially extrapolated from historical events, it’s safe to assume that the Palais Garnier is not actually haunted. For example, water had to be pumped from the site before laying the foundation and a cistern was constructed below the theatre to house excess water (fact), which is very different than the subterranean underworld portrayed in the novel (fiction). However, if you want to err on the safe side, be sure to avoid including the President of France’s new Republic, the Lord Mayor of London and purchasing tickets for box number 5 as King Alfonso XII of Spain. that box was specifically reserved for the Phantom.
4. Garnier bought his own ticket
5. The Palais Garnier was never actually finished.
Despite its opulent interior and credit as having the largest stage in Europe (measuring 52 metres wide by 62 metres high – so big it could fit the Arc de Triomphe inside), some areas of the Palais Garnier were left unfinished. Simply If you build it they will come…maybe. put, they ran out of money. This is a bit of a paradox considering it was the most Garnier must have been nervous about expensive building built during its time, costing more than 7 million francs. In the reception his newly completed today’s money that would translate to 313 million euros, which is actually less than project would receive in 1875, but had it cost to build Paris’ modern 2,700-seat Opera Bastille in 1989 with a price tag of nothing to fear as the opening ceremony 460 million euros. attracted prestigious individuals

Local News Local News Local News Local News Car accident in Torrox A three vehicle pile up in Torrox Costa has left the driver of one of the cars seriously injured and in hospital. Two other people are said to have been slightly injured. The crash happened on the roundabout near Aldi that connects the coast with the road inland up to the motorway. A man driving a Renault Clio lost control of his car as he made his way along the road and collided two cars travelling in the other direction. The resident of Torrox who was driving the Clio was 30 years of age and was said to have been travelling at high speed before he lost control. Accidents on the roundabout at Torrox are said to be common as drivers often break the speed limit of 40km per hour. An ambulance had to transfer the man to the Comercal hospital in Velez Malaga, while the authorities blocked off the road in order to clear the scene.
Huge Drugs Bust in Nerja and the UK There have been 16 arrests during the second phase of operation garpon, which has been developed by specialist agents from the Guardia Civil and civil servants from the tax office in Nerja. The operation saw the confiscation of 558 kilos of hashish, 2 kilos of marijuana, 150 grams of cocaine, hashish oil, magic mushrooms, 11 vehicles, a pistol, computer material and items for distributing drugs.
José María Rivas, visited the newly remodeled Parque Verano Azul, which has had a facelift thanks to a recent investment of 115,000 euros.
Call for flat rate Social Security contributions for newly self employed people
The renovation includes new fencing to improve security as well as fun equipment. Within the playground, some swings have been installed that are aimed and adapted for infants with mobility problems. In addition, this area of the park has had a new floor made of a safety surface.
The association of self employed workers have called on the Junta de Andalucia to introduce the flat rate 50 euro social security rate for people registering as self employed for the first time.
Another of the most important points to highlight among the improvements made has been the relocation of all the sports machinery. The new equipment, as well as all existing units have been located in the same place to allow users, mostly a group of elderly locals, to enjoy keeping fit in the same area. The town hall aims to recover and improve all the playgrounds in the town. In addition, the reforms are aimed at creating specific spaces that respond to the different needs of the groups (infants and the elderly) that make use of them.

Nerja Council remodels Parque Verano Azul
The mayor of Nerja, Rosa Arrabal and the Councilor for Infrastructures, 12 THE MARKET PLACE
Nerja adheres to the new network of municipalities against tourist seasonality The mayor of Nerja, Rosa Arrabal, attended the presentation of the launch of the new Network of Municipalities against Seasonal Tourism of the Andalusian coast (RMET), held last month in La Cala de Mijas. Together with Nerja, more than 60 localities from five provinces have joined the RMET, with the aim of extending tourism throughout the year to generate wealth and employment at a local level.
The main suspect is a 60 year old British woman, who set the price of drugs and sold them on to criminal gangs in the UK. The investigation began in 2016 when the authorities discovered that Spanish residents in the Axarquia were involved in moving hashish across Malaga and Granada and then vehicles were used to transport the haul to Northern European countries.
The special rate, which is much lower than the normal amount, is to encourage unemployed people to set up in business for themselves and has been introduced in some regions for the first 24 months. The Junta are said to be debating the new rule which is aimed at tackling the black market economy.
The international premiere for the second season of the National Geographic series Genius will take place in Malaga at the Cervantes Theatre. The new installment of Genius is about Picasso and stars Antonio Banderas who was born in Malaga. National Geographic were initially going to host the premiere in Madrid but Antonio Banderas changed their minds to host it in Malaga. Many of the scenes for the series were filmed in Malaga which is of course Picasso's birthplace. Journalists from all over the world will arrive in Malaga to see the premiere and as such this is an important endorsement for the city. The new series which was created by Fox television and has been supported by Brian Gazer and Ron Howard from Imagine Entertainment.
The Minister of Tourism and Sports of the Junta de Andalucía, Francisco Javier Fernández and the President of the Andalusian Federation of Municipalities and Provinces (FAMP), Fernando Rodríguez Villalobos, spoke to this meeting to raise awareness of this Network that aims to favour all measures necessary to implement, develop and regulate in all municipalities the fight against seasonal tourism. It is intended to increase measures that "ferment a more homogeneous temporal distribution, both of the supply and the tourist demand; as well as designing strategies not influenced by climatology".

Advantages of Self Sufficient Homes
Energy self sufficient houses have started to be a really attractive option for those who want to keep energy bills low. As well as saving on the electricity bill, these homes are an emblem for those who care about protecting the environment, which thankfully are increasing in number.
S
elf sufficient houses are usually capable of being independent in terms of the energy supplies they use. This often includes being able to generate their own energy and the possibility of using rainwater. There are also other types of houses which are termed as “reduced energy consumption houses, the difference in these buildings is to restrict energy consumption through efficient construction. There are nine attributes that experts who have built and designed these homes agree make up some of the characteristics that the majority enjoy.
1) Insulation Quality This is a very important factor when it comes to maintaining the temperature of the home. For example an increase in shutter thickness from 25mm to 50mm can reduce heat loss by up to 80%. 14 THE MARKET PLACE
2) Orientation and Temperature The key here is that the house is facing South so that the majority of the windows face that way and you can take advantage of the maximum hours of sunlight. In the rooms that face North, the house is designed so that windows are reduced or avoided on those walls so that there are no temperature losses in Winter.
3) Solar Panels Installing solar panels is one of the most popular and common jobs in a house with low energy consumption. Photovoltaic panels allow electricity to be obtained through the sun’s radiation which can then be used to supply the electrical system in the house or get hot water or heating.
4) Wind Energy Another renewable energy source that is abundant in Spain to generate free energy is the wind. A small wind turbine can emulate the operation of large scale wind turbines by converting wind energy into electricity.
5) Biomass and Geothermal Biomass energy and geothermal energy are perfect options to combine with hot water and heating equipment, as well as the cooling system in summer. The continued on page 16

biomass allows calorific energy thanks to fuels such as pellets or olive stones. Geothermal energy is also 100% clean, since it uses heat from the ground or groundwater to power it’s electric motor.
6) Green Areas The importance of vegetation is associated with the multiple benefits of its protection. From the installation of greenhouses that transport heat to the house, to landscaping based on deciduous trees that protect the house from the sun’s heat in Summer and allow the sun into the house in Winter.
7) Storage Batteries Batteries are the fundamental pillar of self sufficient houses because they allow the energy produced to be stored and used throughout the year when
energy production may be decreased. The batteries these days are much more powerful and because of this the price of them have increased considerably. However, it is estimated that in general the investment in one is money well spent because in around 7 years you should be getting a return on your investment and saving a lot of money on bills.
8) Renovation of the Air Many self sufficient houses also have air renewal systems. The idea is to keep the air clean inside the home and at a comfortable temperature. This is an interesting concept especially in more urban areas and environments because they prevent the house from being filled with street air which may contain pollen, dust and polluting gas residues.
9) Water Recovery Self sufficient houses do not limit their assets to energy consumption, they also frequently are able to reuse rainwater. In this case the house must have a water tank that can store a lot of water. It is also necessary to have purification equipment so that the water can be sanitised for use in taps and showers. There are other possiblilites to use water such as taking advantage of waste water for irrigation. Taking into account all these characteristics, it is estimated that the construction of a self suffcient house can be between 5% and 10% more expensive. However, the quality of life acquired and the savings after 7-10 years make it an increasingly attractive proposition.
The Royal British Legion, Nerja Branch 100 years ago this month, battles were still raging along the Western Front in what was called by the Germans “The Spring Offensive” Casualty numbers were enormous, both fatalities and injured, and the appalling weather made matters worse. Fighting was continuing in other areas as well, and countries all over the world declared war on Germany. The picture was bleak everywhere. With no one now left to tell their tales of “the war to end all wars” we have to rely on historians, writers and photographers to remind us of the horror of that dreadful war. However, sometimes we can find interesting facts which are mostly unknown.
Another interesting detail was that Britain’s only formal alliance before 1914 was with Japan, and it was designed to relieve the Royal Navy of some of the burden of defending Britain’s Asian colonies, and to enable Britain and Japan to help one another safeguard their respective interests in China and Korea. When war broke out, the Japanese attacked German possessions in the Pacific and China, but in 1917 Britian requested Japanese assistance with escort duties in the Mediterranean. The region was vital for supplying In 1914 Germany was allied to AustriaAllied armies in Italy and Greece, and Hungary and Italy; Russia was allied for maintaining communications with to France, and both countries had Africa, but the Allied navies faced an entente with Britain. While these threats from German and Austrian alliances certainly contributed to the submarines. The Japanese, operating prewar build-up of tension between from Malta, provided escorts for Allied the great powers, surprisingly, none of them actually produced a declaration of merchant and troop convoys, and a war. In July 1914 Germany gave Austria- search-and-rescue service for the crews of torpedoed vessels. Hungary a “blank cheque”guarantee of Such are the vagaries of the world…. support that went far beyond the terms of their formal alliance. The French came once a friend, then an enemy, then a friend again…..and so on….amazing in because Germany launched a preisn’t it? emptive strike against them and Britain declared war not because of the entente Anyway, no matter how we think or believe, the Royal British Legion’s agreements but because the Germans invaded Belgium, and Italy first kept out work is to support all those who made sacrifices in conflict or in service while of the war and then came in against its protecting our freedoms and standards. own allies!!!

Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross – UK Press Launch, Bakewell
Mitsubishi celebrated 100 years of making cars in 2017. They also were integrated into the Renault Nissan Alliance, and the company is now known as Renault Nissan Mitsubishi, or RNM. This company is now the largest vehicle producer in the world.
I
n the UK last year Mitsubishi sold 26,500 vehicles, including the ever popular L200 Pick-Up and the tax-beating Outlander PHEV Plug-In petrol SUV. Mitsubishi made their first 4WD in 1936, so they have quite a history and tradition of producing all-wheel-drives, so should be good at making them by now. In all the years Mitsubishi have been producing vehicles, it has been in the SUV sector that they have concentrated most. Add to that the rugged Pick-Ups,they have, in the main, stayed clear of the regular hatches and saloons and stuck with what they know best. Recently this has paid off as more and more customers are choosing SUV’s and off-roaders. The all-new Eclipse Cross (not sure why they added Cross into the badging, Eclipse would have been more than adequate) fits well into the current range. It measures 4,405mm long, 1,805mm wide and is 1,685mm high, so all very well in proportion. Mitsubishi say their main competitors are: Toyota C-HR, SEAT Ateca, KIA Sportage, Nissan Qashqai and Peugeot 3008, to name just a few in this highly competitive sector of the market. The Eclipse Cross is being launched with just one engine, a 1.5-litre Direct Injection turbocharged petrol engine that produces 163hp. The 6-speed manual goes from 0-62mph in 10.3 seconds, the CVT auto in 9.3 seconds, and the 4WD Auto in 9.8 seconds. If a customer wants 4WD, then the only option is to buy an Auto. When we were told that the auto gearbox was a CVT, your heart misses a beat, as these gearboxes can be very good, smooth, quick and quiet - or they can be pretty awful. The first car I took out I drove from near Bakewell, up into the Peak District, and then 20 THE MARKET PLACE
the snow covered hills of the Snake Pass was the 6-Speed manual. The engine was lively and quiet, with more than enough power. During the drive, which lasted nearly twohours, I achieved 38.1mpg, which I thought was pretty good for the type of roads and conditions, and continually going up and down the gears, not like on the motorway where I’m sure the fuel consumption would be better at a more constant speed. The interior is up to a very high standard in terms of fit and finish, and materials used are almost as good as a German premium saloon. The Japanese have obviously looked at competitors and decided that they are capable of spending a bit more money and producing a better car. The cabin is very modern with the dash giving the impression it is like a cockpit, with everything in exactly the right place, and very easy to use. It took just a matter of minutes to get to know where all the buttons and switches were, and they were all very intuitive. The rear seats slide individually by up to 20cm, so the boot size can be increased quite substantially. Or slide them back and this gives rear passengers much more legroom... or put them somewhere in the middle for a bit more space for passengers and luggage - a good idea and although not unique, Mitsubishi have taken the right decision by putting this very nice feature in this car. After lunch it was the turn of the 8-speed CVT Auto, something I was dreading yet hoping it wasn’t going to be too disappointing. You can just select Auto and leave it there, or use the 'Sport-Mode' controlled via the steering wheel paddle shifters, which are quick and responsive. Like the interior the Japanese have looked at other CVT systems and seen which are good, and which are… not as good. They have taken the best, and made it
better. The potential disappointment quickly turned to elation as this CVT wasn’t at all bad, very good really! The exterior design is different and eyecatching, this vehicle has a bold visual identity. Although it is most definitely a SUV, it does have Coupe-Like styling and is very attractive. The rear window is split into two sections, which does help reversing as you do get more visibility. There are four models at launch: 2, 3, 4 and First Edition with prices starting from £21,275 and going up to £29,750 for the First Edition 4WD Auto, but limited to just 250 vehicles for the UK. All models are so well equipped with standard equipment. Even the lead-in car, the 2, has alloy wheels, rear view camera, touchpad controller, cruise control, climate control air conditioning, auto lights with auto high beam, privacy glass, 7 airbags, rear spoiler, Front Collision Mitigation, Lane Departure Warning, and so the list goes on. The 3 and 4 add even more, but unfortunately none have satellite navigation as standard, but instead rely on Apple Car Play and Android Auto. This system uses your phone to download sat-nav or routes direct onto the cars system. And while I agree this technology is improving and getting more popular, in many peoples minds you still cant beat the good old sat-nav system built into the car. Mitsubishi say that there may be a Diesel version coming, but as yet nothing definite, and this really depends on just how far diesel sales continue to decline, or indeed if they start to make a comeback. But the 1.5 petrol seemed efficient, quick and quiet, and relatively economical. The Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross is a good all-rounder, looks great, is high quality, and reasonably priced.

The Gemstone of April
by Alex of Gabriela Jewellers, Nerja
Diamond
Colour: Diamond exists naturally in many colours from colourless to all shades of yellow, brown, green, black and very rarely blue, pink, violet and red. It is translucent to transparent and has an adamantine lustre (sparkly surface) which only very few gemstones possess. This is the reason why diamond became the most desired gemstone of all. The colourless (white) diamond is undoubtedly the most desired diamond colour, however, it is not the most expensive and rarest one. Natural, untreated red and blue are the rarest diamonds on earth and therefore also the most expensive ones, followed by the rare pink colour.
Hardness:
10; out of a scale 1-10 (10 being the hardest) Diamond is the hardest material existing on our planet, but as often mistaken, it is not unbreakable!
Origin:
Diamond forms in very deep areas of earth under extreme heat (ca. 2000°C) and pressure (40’000 atmospherically). It comes to the surface through volcanic eruptions, therefore the places where we find diamonds are not where they are formed. The most important deposits currently are in Australia, Russia and South Africa while in the past Brazil and India were the largest suppliers. Diamonds also are found in Canada, USA, Guinea, Botswana, Zaire and Angola. Some African locations sadly are well-known for ‘conflict diamonds’ which are illegal to the world diamond market…
Healing properties: Diamond is a traditional healing stone which symbolizes absolute faithfulness to yourself. It conveys awareness, selfdetermination and strength of character and helps to understand the cause of problems as well as to overcome crises. Also, it supports logical thinking and the ability of learning. Physically it supports cleaning processes of the body and helps with illnesses of nerves, sensory organs, endocrine glands and the brain. 22 THE MARKET PLACE
Famous Diamonds:
Quite a number of diamonds are wellknown and famous for their sizes, beauty and/or their adventurous past.
WHITE DIAMONDS: Cullinan I or Star of Africa:
530,20 carats pear shape blue-white diamond. It has been cut with 104 other stones from the largest ever found rough diamond in 1908. The Cullinan rough was discovered on 26. January 1905 in Cullinan, South Africa and was named after the mine’s chairman Thomas Cullinan. Many of these diamonds cut from the rough Cullinan are owned by the English Royal family and the ‘Cullinan I’ adorns the sceptre of the English King and can be admired in the Tower of London. It is the largest cut white diamond of fine quality in the world.
Cullinan II:
317,40 carat oval cut diamond. Cut from the same rough diamond as above. Set in the English state crown and showcased in the Tower of London.
Great Mogul:
280 carats rose cut diamond. It was discovered as a rough diamond of 787,50 carats around 1650 in India and was gifted to the 5th Mughal emperor Shah Jahan. He commissioned a Venetian stonecutter to cut the rough. Unfortunately, in an attempt to get rid of unwanted flaws he ground an immense amount off the diamond and ended his work with a pure result of only 280 cts. The emperor spared the cutters head, but made him pay for his mistake with all the money he had. The diamond came in possession of Nadir Shah, the Persian ruler in 1739 when he invaded India. In 1747 he was assassinated and the stone disappeared… There are different theories on what happened to the diamond, some believe it has been recut into one of the smaller famous diamonds described on this list, but it is much more likely it got stolen
and many smaller stones were cut from it to disguise its origin.
Centenary:
273,85 carats modified heart shape diamond. It is 39,9 x 50,50mm on top and 24,55mm deep. This diamond originally weighed 599 carats and was found in DeBeers’s premier mine in South Africa in 1986. The cutting process took over a year. Gabriel Tolkowsky, one of the world’s best and famous diamond cutter, designed and cut it with an unprecedented 247 facets! The stone has been tested and certified by GIA (Gemmological Institution of America) and is of the finest possible quality (colour D/ clarity FL). It never has been officially valued, but insured for US$ 100 million. Rumours report it got sold in June 2008, however, De Beers has neither confirmed nor denied those rumours…
Jubilee or Reitz:
245,35 carats cushion cut diamond. The original rough stone, weighing 650,80 carats, was discovered in 1895 in South Africa and was originally named after Francis William Reitz, the then president of the state of the stone’s discovery. It was renamed in 1897 to honour the 60th anniversary of the coronation of Queen Victoria.
Orlov:
189,60 carats rose cut diamond. It was found in the 17th century in India. Legends say a French deserter stole it from an Indian temple in 1747. The stone passed from merchant to merchant and finally appeared in Amsterdam, where it got purchased by an Iranian millionaire. He sold it to the Count Orlov who gifted it to the empress Catherine the Great of Russia to show his affection for her. However, researchers today have proven that in fact the Russian empress herself bought the diamond and the Count Orlov only helped to disguise the spending of state money on jewellery. In 1774 an Imperial Sceptre was completed to incorporate the diamond. Today it is on display and owned by the Kremlin in Moscow.
Jacob:
184,50 carats rectangular cushion cut diamond. It measures 39,5 x 29,25mm wide, 22,5mm deep and has 58 facets. It originated from India, was found in 1884 and believed to have weight over 400 carats in its original rough form. It was named by its original seller A.M. Jacob who sold the diamond to the Nizam of Hyderabad in India for an unbelievably low price. It is said the diamond received very little interest by the Nizam family for many years, even been used as paper weight until its true value was discovered and it was stored away. In 1995 the Indian government purchased it.
Regent or Pitt:
140,50 carats cushion cut diamond. It is considered as one of the most beautiful and purest diamonds of the world. It was found in India in 1698 and purchased by Englishman Thomas Pitt, Governor of Fort St. George in India. He brought the stone to London where it was cut. The cutting took two years and cost £5000. In 1717 it was purchased by the French Regent, Philippe II, Duke of Orleans. In 1722 it was set into the crown for the coronation of Louis XV and later, in 1775 reset in Louis XVI’s crown. Maria Antoinette worn it in a hat in 1791, a year later it got stolen during the French revolution but was recovered shortly after when it was found in roof timbers in an attic in Paris. Napoleon Bonaparte used it for the pommel of his sword and his second wife, Archduchess Marie Louise of Austria carried ‘the Regent’ to Austria upon his exile. Later it returned to France and was mounted on the crowns of Louis XVIII, Charles I and Napoleon III. Since 1887, it sparkles at the Louvre in Paris in a diadem which was designed for the Empress Eugenie. In 2016 ‘The Regent’ diamond value was estimated at US$ 61.44 million. Due to several scandals and misfortune of those who owned the Regent diamond throughout history it is said to be cursed.
Jonker:
125,35 carats. It was found by a farmer named J. J. Jonker on 17. January 1934 in South Africa. The rough diamond had a weight of 726 carats, was the 4th largest rough found at that time and was found only 5km away from the famous, largest ever found rough diamond ‘the Cullinan’. Experts speculated that the rough diamond of the Jonker originated from the larger Cullinan crystal as cleavages (breaking lines) on both diamonds perfectly match and it has the same fine quality, colour D/ clarity FL. In 1949 Harry Winston, a well-known diamond

dealer from New York sold it to the King Farouk of Egypt and after the King was exiled in 1952 the gem was lost. It reappeared many years later in possession of Queen Ratna of Nepal. In 1977 it was sold to an anonymous buyer for only US$ 2.259 million in Hong Kong and has never been heard from since…
Koh-i-Noor:
108,92 carats oval cut diamond. This diamond was originally a round stone of 186 carats weight and belonged to the Indian Raj. In 1739 the Shah of Persia plundered it and named it ‘Mountain of light’ (Koh-i-Noor). In 1850 it came into possession of the English East India Company, which presented it to Queen Victoria. It got recut into an oval cut and set in the crown of Queen Mary, wife of George V. Later, reset in a crown for Queen Elisabeth II’s mother which now is in the Tower of London.
Shah:
88,70 carats partially polished diamond. It originally came from India and over time belonged to the Shah of Persia amongst 2 other monarchs’. In 1829 it was given to Tsar Nicholas I and is now kept in the Kremlin in Moscow.
Hope Diamond weight of 755,5 carats and it took over 2 years to be completed. It was brought to Thailand for an exhibition and later, in 1995 purchased by a group led by Henry Ho. Today, it is officially owned by the King of Thailand.
Florentine:
137,27 carats octagonal cut yellow diamond. It originated from India and has an irregular, unusual cut of 9 sides with 126 facets. Its early history is full of legends and its only known for sure that in 1657 it was possessed by the Medici family in Florence, and during the 18th century ended up in the Habsburg crown and after was worn as a brooch. Its whereabouts after World War I is unknown and the diamond is classified as lost….
Tiffany:
63,60 carats marquise cut diamond. It is one of the 105 stones cut from the rough Cullinan diamond. It was set in the crown of Queen Mary and can be seen in the Tower of London.
128,51 carats cushion cut orange-brown diamond. It was found in the Kimberley mine, South Africa in 1878 with a rough weight of 287,42 carats. Tiffany in New York purchased the rough diamond and it got cut in Paris into this adorable cushion cut stone with an impressive number of 90 facets.

Cullinan IV:
55 carats pear shape diamond. It is said this diamond was worn by Charles the Bold around 1470. After that we only know it was bought in 1570 by Seigneur de Sancy from the French ambassador to Turkey. Today this diamond is on display at the Louvre in Paris.
41 carats pear shape green diamond. Probably from India, but early history is unknown. Bought in 1742 by Friedrich August II, Duke of Saxony for 400’000 taler. Today the diamond is kept in the ‘Green Vault’ of Dresden, Germany
45,52 carats cushion cut rare blue diamond. One of the most famous jewels in the world. It is believed it originates from India. French gem merchant JB. Tavernier sold the original larger stone called ‘French Blue’ to the French King Louis XIV in 1668. It got stolen in 1791, was recut and reappeared on the market in 1830. Nine years later, it was listed to be owned by the Londoner banker H. Ph. Hope. After it went through numerous owners it ended in Washington, first in private ownership and since 1958 owned and showcased in the Smithsonian Golden Jubilee: Institution, Washington D.C. "For the second time within a few weeks I visited The Salon Del Mar, Torre Del Mar. My first ever visit to the venue was to see Abba Revival which was an excellent show, and my visit on Thursday 15th March was to see Stars Of The West End. Like the previous show there was a warm welcome by the staff and the bar staff were excellent. I have to say that for once, unlike many other venues the bar prices were very reasonable. Well, then came the show which I can describe in one word - excellent. The stage was set with Mike Sterling who has appeared in The Phantom Of The Opera & Les Miserables, Lucy Van Gasse who has appeared in Wicked & Sound Of Music and Kate Galston who has appeared in Chicago & Mamma Mia. The three sat around a small, round white table with a bottle of Bushmills,
complimented by a really good lighting display... and then the how began... and what a show it was! Songs from Les Miserables, My Fair Lady, West Side Story, Wicked, The Sound Of Music, Phantom Of The Opera, Chicago, Beauty and the Beast, Legally Blonde, Sunset Boulevard, and with a finale of We Will Rock You & Mamma Mia. By the time We will Rock You and Mamma Mia were in full flow the audience was on its feet singing and dancing the night away. We were later told The Bushmills was really just apple juice as we noticed it had emptied! To summarise - a fantastic night which the audience loved and reacted to - well done to the three performers. Also a big thank you to Big M Promotions bringing these good acts to us in Torre Del Mar. Look forward to more!"

Manish's Zodiac predictions - April Manish Kumar Arora, K.P. Astrologer, Numerologist, Tarot Card Reader & Vastu Consultant Facebook: manishastroconsultant email: manish@manishastrologer.com
Aries ( 21 March – 19 April )
This is a time to open to wider horizons and to study or learn whatever it is you need to set you on the upward road. This period will bring growth, expansion and opportunity for those prepared to take the adventurous course. This is a time in which love must take up the mantle of responsibility and you will have the benefit of a friend and true romance of your mate.
Taurus ( 20 April – 20 May )
There are opportunities aplenty as long as your conduct is impeccable. New friends and connections will bring new ideas. New ideas or aspirations will illuminate and uplift you. Success among your peers or in the wider cosmos will come for some. Be guided by the highest ideals. You will flourish in friendship and personal success if you do. Women may feature strongly in the home or your emotional life.
Gemini ( 21 May – 20 June)
You may find that people from past contacts come back into your life unexpectedly. In some instances, they will bring outstanding baggage. There may be unexpected travel while for others travel arrangements could be subject to delay or change. The radical change will take you in mid-stride while others will consciously decide upon change in accordance with urges from within. Relationships may be influenced by money matters.
Cancer ( 21 June – 22 July )
This could be an unsettled time, with a lot of restlessness in the air. You can forge ahead from here if you’re prepared to set out on a new or different course. Some may take up the cudgel and get involved in the wider community, striking blows for new practices and ideas. Others may conceive a new and fascinating purpose that marks a turning point.
Leo ( 23 July – 22 August )
If you take things carefully and get the details right, you’ll progress by degrees toward your goals. You may have to watch fatigue or tiredness this month. Your powers of endurance are good, but you may find that too much outward activity or involvement without a break to refresh and recuperate will take you to the limit. You would be ill-advised to rush into things or push ahead.
Virgo ( 23 August – 22 September )
It’s a time of new ideas, new ways of doing and seeing things and a revised perspective on your relationship with the wider community. There can be new creative or spiritual influences that play a part in this, but there can also be losses, sorrows and change on a scale that you simply must learn to accept. The trick will be to seize the opportunity and the money will come further down the track. 28 THE MARKET PLACE
Libra ( 23 September – 22 October )
If you’re in for the long haul and set something important and meaningful in motion, you’ll be richly rewarded in time. Romance, creativity, leisure activity and children will be preferred options or points of impact. If you’re in a relationship, do something that adds texture or interest to your lives. Recreational activities, creative endeavours or gatherings with friends can enhance your quality of life. Intuitive responses will be rewarding.
Scorpio ( 23 October – 21 November )
This period can be a journey where you have to face fears or break past patterns. Use your dreams to seek guidance or advice about the best course of action or the right decision. You may need to take a new level of authority in what you do. Set a new pattern that marks a clear break from the problems or troubles of the past.
Sagittarius ( 22 November -21 December )
You may need to look at shared goals or interests with your nearest and dearest. There could be a feeling of wellbeing as you work towards a common purpose. There will be intensity and stress, but many of you will find that extraordinary new possibilities or dimensions will emerge as a consequence of a new sense of destiny. This is not a time for rash decisions, especially where money is concerned.
Capricorn ( 22 December – 19 January ) This month will activate your house of creativity, urging a cycle of change in the way you live your life. New and interesting projects or social activities will be on the cards for some. Investment or speculative endeavours may be the call for others. Someone new or different may be woven into the pattern of your life so fast that you won’t have time to catch your breath.
Aquarius ( 20 January – 18 February )
This will be a lucky time where opportunity is concerned. There could be surprises or unexpected elevations in work that may change your financial situation with some speed. You will simply have the fruit of your efforts in the long term if you persist until all is done. Creative projects may receive a boost with a renewal of energy. Leisure pastimes may flourish and leave you feeling renewed.
Pisces ( 19 February – 20 March )
This month will be filled with action and new beginnings. Be dynamic! Take new directions with vigour. You may take a new path or hit a new level of operation. New vistas could open before you or new horizons may beckon. This is a better time for romantic adventures to prosper. Make sure you know and understand what you’re getting into, for not everything that beguiles you will turn out to be what it seems.

THE ARTS SOCIETY NERJA (Formerly Nerja NADFAS) Tuesday April 10th 2018
ART AND LIFE IN SANTA FÉ, NEW MEXICO A full illustrated lecture in English by James Russell Sponsored by Verano Azul Lecture starts at 6.00pm. Doors open at 5.00pm Tickets only available on the night Visitors are very welcome E10 The Cultural Centre, (Casa Cultura), Calle Granada, Nerja
The Arts Society Nerja were honoured to have a very special guest to their Annual General Meeting On the 1st of March The Arts Society Nerja AGM, at the beginning of their 25th Jubilee Year, was attended by June Robinson the Chairman of The Arts Society worldwide and Billy Dawson, a Society Trustee. The Arts Society is a leading arts education charity which itself is celebrating its 50 years of existence. They have a global network of 385 local Societies, which bring people together through a shared curiosity for the arts. The Societies provide welcoming places – locally, nationally and globally – to hear expert lecturers share their specialist knowledge about the arts. Thera are over 90,000+ members worldwide who enjoy these lectures and who contribute to and preserve our artistic heritage through volunteering and grants to Arts Projects.
THE ARTS SOCIETY VISION “The belief that the arts have the potential to enrich peoples’ lives is at the heart of everything we do. We want to be the most inclusive and influential arts society”
This colourful lecture is based on two decades’ personal experience of a unique art colony. Nowhere else in the USA have Native American, Spanish and Anglo cultures grown side by side as they have here, and this diversity, along with the glorious light of the high desert, has attracted artists since the early days of the railroad. The history of this still-thriving colony is rich, strange and full of remarkable characters, including British visitors like DH Lawrence and famous American artists such as Georgia O'Keeffe.
The AGM was held in the Museo de Nerja meeting room and attended by many Members. Sadly we said farewell to Roberta Kettel who has been a Member since the Society formed 25 years ago. She held many positions on the Committee including Chairman, Sponsorship and Travel. A presentation of flowers was made to Roberta and June Robinson handed over the new Arts Society Gold Brooch recognizing its 50 Years Celebrations to her. Roberta is leaving Nerja shortly to live in her adopted country of Denmark.
About James Russell James Russell studied History at Pembroke College, Cambridge, but was galvanized into writing about art by a lengthy stint selling contemporary paintings and sculpture in Santa Fe, New Mexico. A passionate advocate of 20th century painting and design, he writes and lectures widely. His books include the popular 4-volume series Ravilious in Pictures, about British watercolourist and designer Eric Ravilious (1903-42), and other titles devoted to Paul Nash, Peggy Angus, Edward Bawden and Edward Seago. He curated the 2015 exhibition Ravilious at Dulwich Picture Gallery and has lectured all over the country, from Rye to Glasgow and from the V&A to the Royal West of England Academy. "Having spent five years selling art on the city's Canyon Road (think Bond Street with cowboy hats), I can offer an intimate picture of Santa Fe: it's inspiring, funny and occasionally scandalous." 34 THE MARKET PLACE
After the meeting we were entertained by Janet Bluck with her tales of her experiences in Uzbekistan after the Russians left and then we enjoyed a Tapas & Wine lunch at Hermes Café.

Study finds oral contraception reduces cancer risk
Is it ok to sleep in contact lenses? After a crazy night out, it’s tempting to skip the whole ‘pre-bed’ routine and just fall asleep as you are; clothes on and all. You certainly can’t be bothered brushing your teeth or taking your make-up off. In fact, it takes all your energy to shrug off your heels before you lie, semi-comatose, on your covers. But, if you’re a contact lens wearer, you might wonder how necessary it is to actually take them out before you nod off. The problem is, leaving your contact lenses in overnight can lead to serious problems. You see, (pardon the pun), your eyes need oxygen. When you wear contact lenses at night, they act as a barrier to getting enough of it. That can lead to inflammation, which can cause your eyes to be red and sore. Wearing your contacts at night also increases your risk of infection. That’s because bacteria usually get flushed away overnight, but when you have a contact lens in, it can stop the bacteria from moving, therefore leading to infection. In fact, research shows that even occasionally keeping contact lenses in at night can increase your risk of keratitis, inflammation of the cornea. You might have heard of people who leave their contact lenses in overnight and haven’t had problems. These people have probably been prescribed extended wear contact lenses. If you have that type of contact lenses, and your doctor says it’s fine, you can wear those particular contacts overnight. However, they are a specific type of contact lens. If you haven’t been told that it’s okay to sleep with your lenses in - don’t. The truth is, if you happen to fall asleep with your contact lenses in once in a blue moon, don’t stress. Simply take your contacts out when you wake up to give your eyes a break. Pop your glasses on and give your eyes some time to ‘breathe’. 36 THE MARKET PLACE
In a new study published in JAMA Oncology, researchers explore how oral contraceptives, which affect women’s hormone levels to prevent pregnancy, affect cancer risk. Taking data from over 100,000 women, the US researchers found that women taking the Pill lowered their risks of ovarian and endometrial cancer - a known benefit of the Pill. The researchers also analysed other factors that might affect the risk, including obesity, smoking status and physical activity levels. Interestingly, researchers also discovered that the longer women are on the Pill, the lower the risk becomes. For those taking the Pill for 10 years or more, the risk of ovarian cancer was 40% lower compared to women who had never used the pill or used them for less than a year, and 34% lower for endometrial cancer. The research confirms earlier studies that suggest oral contraception decreases the risk of ovarian and endometrical cancer, however this study delves deeper into the lifestyle behaviours of the women taking the contraception. Scientists found that women who used the Pill and were obese, smoked or did not exercise had among the lowest ovarian cancer rates. It’s not clear why, but the researchers speculate that in the case of smokers, there may be some interaction among the hormones associated with oral contraceptives and tobacco.
“We found long-term oral contraceptive use reduced ovarian cancer risk universally - it didn’t matter how healthy you were later in life or if you had a family history of the disease; all women experienced the benefit,” said Britton Trabert, the study’s senior author and epidemiologist from the division of cancer epidemiology and genetics at the US National Cancer Institute (NCI). For endometrial cancer, women who were obese and used the Pill for 10 years or more lowered their risk of developing the cancer, while women who were normal weight and used oral contraceptives did not. The study was less conclusive when it came to breast cancer and colorectal cancer.
The body shape that raises a woman's heart attack risk While obesity raises heart attack risk in both sexes, women with bigger waists and hips are more likely to have a heart attack compared to men who have similar shaped bodies, according to a new study. Researchers from the George Institute for Global Health at the University of Oxford, studied the body shape and size of half a million adults to locate the best predictors of heart attack risk. The research team used the UK Biobank database and examined almost 500,000 people aged between 40 and 69. Over a period of seven years, 5,710 cases of heart attack were recorded, with 28 per cent occurring in women. After analysing the waist and hip size, and height of the individuals in accordance with BMI, the study’s lead author, Sanne Peters, concluded that the “waist-to-hip ratio was more strongly associated with the risk of [heart attack] than body mass index in both sexes, especially in women.” The results found that waist-to-hip ratio and waist circumference, respectively, were 15 per cent and seven percent more strongly tied to heart attack risk in women than men.“Although general and central adiposity measures each have profound deleterious effects on the risk of [heart attack] in both sexes, a high waist circumference and waist-to-hip ratio conferred a greater excess risk of [heart attack] in women than in men,” Dr. Peters said. According to the World Health Organisation, 40 per cent of women worldwide are overweight, 15 per cent are obese, and approximately 2.8 million people die each year as a result of being overweight or obese.

Beauty by Katie Beauty, Nails, Make Up and Tanning Salon
SVS Lashes - Speed, Volume, Style Our new and unique lash extension treatment has been created exclusively by Nouveau Lashes and combines the best aspects of individual, express and volume lashes. Unlike the classic 1-on-1 individual eyelash application, a volume fan is tailor made and applied to a single lash - creating a fuller, thicker, longer and more glamourous look. The lashes are designed to be extremely light making it possible to apply up to 6 extensions to one natural lash. They are applied in a 'fan' to give a soft and fluffy effect and are lightweight so as not to weigh down on the natural lashes.
Are these known as Russian Lashes? They are similar in concept to Russian Lashes which requires fans to be uniform and stylised, however, the SVS lashes are created during the treatment by the lash technician to correctly fit the lashes and to look more natural than the Russian Lashes style. We use a mixture of different lengths per 'fan' which when applied creates a fluffy, textured look, as opposed to the uniform lengths of a Russian Volume lash, which creates a more dramatic, dense look.
Please pop by the salon or phone to speak to Katie regarding suitability for your lashes and/or more information about our new treatment.

Re-opening of charity shop, Puente don Manuel
Nerja map spot 15
Friday 16th March saw the grand opening of the Charity Shop (Alcaucin Community Association) which has been closed for a few weeks. The Charity Shop is attached to the Evangalistic Church in Puente don Manuel, located at the cross roads, Cruce de Puente don Manuel, beneath Maroma Inmobiliaria and raises money to help the needy of Alcaucin and the surrounding areas.
Try our Menu of the Day! Full English Breakfasts Traditional Sunday Roast
Its opening was greeted with delight by the many customers who came to see what bargains they could find, and find them they did. Our worthy Mayor, Senor Mario Blancke, dropped in to support the shop and wish us all the best, and the Cantaremos Singers came along and gave a lovely performance which was enjoyed by all. The shop is to be open Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday mornings 10 am until 2 pm and the church is open for coffees on a Friday morning. The new book shop next door to the shop is also open on the days the shop is open. Please come along and see us, have a coffee on a Friday morning in the church next door, browse for a bargain or two and drop in and pick up a good book to read.

Micronutrients - Magnesium Magnesium is the fourth most abundant mineral in the body, with the majority found in the skeleton and the rest in muscle, soft tissue and blood. Recent dietary guidelines listed magnesium as an underconsumed nutrient.
Roles in Health Magnesium is needed in biochemical reactions, including energy production, nutrient metabolism, fatty acid and protein synthesis, transmission of nerve and muscle impulses, glucose control, blood pressure regulation and transport of calcium and potassium ions. Higher levels of serum magnesium have been associated with reduced risk of cardiovascular disease. Evidence supports an inverse relationship between dietary intake of magnesium and risk of Type 2 diabetes. One large cohort study showed magnesium intake may aid in preventing pancreatic cancer. Research continues for magnesium therapy in risk reduction and management of heart disease, hypertension, Type 2 diabetes, pregnancy complications, asthma and migraine headaches.
Current Recommendations Daily requirements begin at 80 milligrams for children age 1 to 3 and advance to 410 milligrams for adolescent males and 360 milligrams for adolescent females. Adult males require 400 to 420 milligrams, while the RDA for adult females is 310 to 320 milligrams. Pregnant and lactating women require up to 400 milligrams and 360 milligrams, respectively, depending on age. Without sufficient data to establish an RDA, infants younger than 1 have an adequate intake based on consumption from breast-feeding and solid foods, or about 30 milligrams per day for infants 0 to 6 months, and 75 milligrams per day for infants 7 to 12 months. Tolerable upper intake levels for supplements are 65 milligrams per day for children 1 to 3 years old, 110 milligrams per day for ages 4 to 8 and 350 milligrams per day for ages 9 and older. 44 THE MARKET PLACE
Sources of Magnesium Magnesium is widely available in plant and animal foods and often is included in fortified foods and enriched grains. Soil health can impact the amount of magnesium in foods. Tap and bottled waters are potential sources; levels range from 1 to more than 120 milligrams per litre. Magnesium supplements come in a variety of forms with varying bioavailability. Research shows aspartate, citrate, lactate and chloride forms may be absorbed better than oxide and sulfates. If supplements are used, they should be taken with meals to avoid the risk of diarrhea.
Signs of Deficiency Chronic low levels of magnesium can negatively affect body functions that may be associated with chronic diseases, such as hypertension, cardiovascular disease, Type 2 diabetes, osteoporosis, Alzheimer’s disease and conditions including attention deficit disorder and migraines. Magnesium deficiency is rare, primarily because it is abundant in food and the kidneys limit urinary excretion when dietary intake is low. However, chronic low intakes of magnesium or conditions such as alcoholism can promote magnesium deficiency, which has been associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease, Type 2 diabetes and osteoporosis. Preliminary signs of deficiency include loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting and fatigue, which can progress to more serious symptoms such as abnormal heart rhythm, seizures and coronary spasms.
Populations at Risk Older adults and individuals with gastrointestinal diseases, Type 2 diabetes, renal disorders or alcoholism are more susceptible to magnesium deficiency, since they are likely to underconsume or experience reduced absorption or increased losses of magnesium. Large doses of magnesium supplements, magnesium-based antacids or laxatives can interfere with magnesium absorption (especially for people who have impaired kidney function) and can cause diarrhea, nausea and cramping. Cases of fatal hypermagnesemia have occurred with medications exceeding 5,000 milligrams per day of magnesium.
Bottom Line Studies continue to discover magnesium’s benefits in health promotion and disease prevention, but more research is needed. Well-balanced eating plans provide adequate amounts of magnesium. If deficiency is confirmed, dietary supplements may be required under the care of a physician. Magnesium-rich Spinach Frittata recipe

Spinach Frittata Recipe Spinach is a rich source of magnesium, so to increase your intake cook up this easy frittata recipe. Remember if you are using fresh spinach to clean it thoroughly first.
INGREDIENTS l 9 large eggs l 2 Tbsp milk l 1/3 cup grated Parmesan cheese l 1/4 tsp salt l 2 Tbsp olive oil l 1 medium onion chopped l 1 large clove garlic minced l Sun dried tomatoes, 2 Tbsp chopped l 250g fresh spinach, chopped l 50g goats cheese l freshly ground black pepper
PREPARATION 1) In a mixing bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, and Parmesan cheese. Stir in the salt and pepper. Set aside. 2) Heat olive oil in an oven-proof, stickfree frying pan on a medium heat. Add the onions and sautĂŠ until translucent, about 4-5 minutes. Add the garlic and sun-dried tomatoes (if using) and cook a minute more. 3) Add the chopped spinach, a handful at a time, use tongs to mix with the onions. As the fresh spinach begins to wilt and there is more room in the pan, add more of the fresh chopped spinach to the pan. 46 THE MARKET PLACE
4) Once the spinach has wilted, spread the mixture out evenly on bottom of the pan. Pour the egg Parmesan mixture over the spinach and onions. Use a spatula to lift up the spinach mixture along the sides of the pan to let egg mixture flow underneath.
wiggly. Pre-heat the grill.
5) Sprinkle bits of goat cheese over the top of the frittata mixture.
Although the pan may be out of the oven for a few minutes, the handle is still very hot! To keep from accidentally picking it up by the handle while hot (speaking from experience, ouch!) take a piece of ice and melt it against the pan's handle to cool it down.
6) Lower the heat to low and cover the pan. Let cook on the stovetop 10 to 13 minutes, until all but the centre of the frittata is set. (You may need to check a few times, to see how well the frittata is setting.) The centre should still be
7) Set the oven rack in the top third of the oven. Grill for 3 to 4 minutes until the top is golden. Remove from oven with oven mitts and let cool for several minutes.
Cut into wedges and serve.

Local animal charities C.A.S. (Costa Animal Society) NERJA RESIDENTS DAY Be on the lookout for the Costa Animal Society (CAS) at the Nerja Residents Day on Sunday April 8. The event will be held at the Plaza de España just behind the town hall. We will have a tombola and information booth as well as a stall featuring English food to be washed down with water, sodas, beer and wine. Residents Day is always a fun day out for the entire family with a full calendar of entertainment organised by the town hall. Visit the numerous stalls and food venues put on by local clubs, charities and small businesses and sample the culture and cuisine from a variety of foreign residents who live in Nerja. The event runs from 12.00pm to 5.00pm. *In the event of inclement weather, Residents Day will be held the following Sunday.
CAS SHOP NEWS What better way to help the Costa Animal Society (CAS) than to help yourself. Why not do a spring clean and thin out those heaving wardrobes? The CAS shop is always accepting donations of ladies’, men’s and children’s clothing. Don’t stop there. How about the cupboards, bookcases and garage as well? From linen to accessories, books to DVDs, bric-á-brac, electronics and small pieces of furniture. And while you’re at it you can peruse the shop with its large inventory of clean, well-presented goods. You’re sure to find fantastic bargains for the whole family. The CAS shop is situated at the top of Avda Castilla Perez 2, Nerja beside Good Stuff cafe. Opening hours are from 10am until 2pm, Monday to Saturday excluding bank holidays. The telephone number is 689 314 350.
HAPPY TAILS ROSIE
March began on the right paw with several Costa Animal Society (CAS) rescues finding new homes in places far away. To start things off our wonderful Punki began her new life with a retired lady in Granada Province where she has 48 THE MARKET PLACE
settled comfortably in the campo with several cat siblings. Soon afterwards the lovely Rosie flew to her new forever family in Norway after she finally completed the long preparation process required for travel to Nordic countries. Continuing the Granada theme, Marmalade the cat, who had wandered into a CAS volunteer’s house in early February and stayed, joined a MARMALADE menagerie of three dogs and two other cats when he was taken in by a bohemian couple who live in the Sierra Nevada foothills. And to our great pleasure, young Daisy and Alba, who are two very cute Podenco sisters, were adopted by a couple from Motril after their story was shared by CAS on social media. It is a ALBA
rarity for animal charities to be able to home two siblings together but these girls are very close and the couple couldn’t bear to separate the two. Marina is another story that CAS shared online which resulted in her being rehomed in England. She had been found last winter after being hit by a car and left on the side of the road with severe injuries. Marina’s leg was broken in several places plus she had a ruptured bladder and a perforated MARINA intestine, all three of which required major surgery. After spending several months recuperating in foster care she made a complete recovery and was ready for adoption by the end of February. A kind lady in the Doncaster area read about Marina’s ordeal and offered to provide a good home for her there. After a home check was performed by UK based charity Marina’s transportation was arranged and she was flown to her new life at the end of March.
BELLA Finally, Bella and Lobo’s story is one CAS has to deal with more often than they should. Apparently, they had been taken in as young pups by European expats with good intentions but when things became financially difficult they had to move back to their home country. Rather than contact CAS in advance the expats left the two dogs in the rental property after they moved out with little more than a note and a small donation. Again CAS shared their story on Facebook and Bella has been adopted by a young family from Benalmadena.
READY FOR ADOPTION
LOBO
Unfortunately, as stated before it is very difficult to rehome two dogs together so Lobo is still on the market. Please feel free to contact Kurt or Laura at 95 252 1426 or Fiona on the CAS website, www.casnerja.org, or the CAS Facebook page if you would like to meet Lobo or any of our other rescue cats and dogs.
CAN YOU HELP CAS? The Costa Animal Society (CAS) is always in need of more volunteer helpers in a number of areas. If you have spare time to fill, please make contact! In particular, creative ideas for fundraising are always welcome. Also, fosterers are always in demand to take short-term care of animals until a permanent home can be found. CAS will provide you with all that you need: food, bedding, leads, toys, etc., and we will always be available for you around the clock if you need help. For a no-obligation chat, contact Vera on 95 252 9670 for general enquiries. Simone on 619 903 815 can answer queries about airport runs in English, German or Spanish. And despite the tough times and uncertainties, money is always needed to cope with the continuous flow of abandoned dogs and cats requiring help from the Costa Animal Society. If you could donate a little to help the animals, CAS would be most grateful. A.P.A. NERJA SKY DIVE APPEAL APA Nerja Estacion Esperanza is a charity based in Nerja, Spain whose mission is to rescue abandoned and abused dogs in the area. In the last three years APA Nerja has rescued and rehomed in excess of 700 dogs, These lucky dogs have been rehomed in the UK, Sweden, Holland, Germany, Poland and Finland. If APA Nerja had not rescued these dogs they would have been either left on the streets or been put to sleep. During this time the Charity has funded its work by various fund raising activities and from the generous support of its supporters. In its most ambitious fundraising event ever, the President of APA Nerja, Laura Downes and one of its most erstwhile supporters, Paul Nicol, intend to undertake a Sky Dive in Seville on the 14th April 2018. This is a big challenge for them both as they are both scared of heights so let’s support them to make as much money as they can to support the work of the Charity and all monies raised will go to the continuing work of rescuing and homing the dogs for their vet bills, food and to repair the Shelter where they find safety and refuge. Thank you. https://www.justgiving.com/ crowdfunding/apaskydive2018
LEO
that since February 23 of our dogs travelled to their forever homes: 12 to Sweden, 3 to The Netherlands, 4 to Germany, 1 to Belgium, 1 to the UK and 2 stayed locally in Spain. Thank you to everyone that played their part in rehoming these dogs: those who fostered, those who walked and cared for the dogs at the shelter, those who found and secured their new homes, those who accompanied them to the vets and to the airport and those who adopted these wonderful dogs and gave them their forever homes. Dog rescue could not happen without team work and what a brilliant team we have at APA!
TALK TO THE PAW – APRIL 2018 – ALEX’S SHELTER APPEAL
Leo is a castrated Sharpei cross born on 26.9.15. Leo is a friendly and strong dog with a lot of energy. He still needs a bit of training to walk on the lead but due to regular walks from our volunteers he is getting better every week. Leo gets on well with other dogs but he would be best suited to a home in the countryside with lots of space and no children. Leo will benefit from more training and needs an owner who has the time and patience to continue with his training. Could you give Leo the forever home that he deserves?

The rain in Spain stays mainly on the…... dogs at the APA shelter!! I’m so lucky to be in my nice new pen, but my poor old kennel mates weren’t so lucky; two of them had to be moved completely as they were water-logged! Our ‘humans’ are working as fast as they can and have completed 14 pens, but there’s still lots to be done to complete the remaining 8 pens. If you can help with donations or volunteer your time, please contact APA Nerja. Also, this month is ‘Worming’ time! Every three months our ‘humans’ order 120 worming tablets, to ensure that we are all kept well and healthy! Smaller dogs get one tablet, but I actually get 4 ‘cos I’m such

Tail is a charity in the very old fashioned sense. We rely for ALL of our income on our friends, supporters and our community. We have known for a long time that each Town Hall has, or should have, an allowance in it's annual budget for distribution to local good causes. After seeing in the local Spanish press that Malaga has E100,000 for it's local animal refuge and Nerja has quite a substantial sum for similar needs (Yes, I know, I know; don't believe what you read in the papers!) Tail secured an appointment with our Mayor in Torrox to try and finally get an idea of what help, financial or otherwise – we desperately need a big old boy! We don’t mind a larger site – it may be possible really ‘cos we get treats too (our to achieve. humans think the treats hide the A presentation was put to him tablets, but we’re not stupid!). to which he listened carefully Anyway, the ‘worming’ bill this and with interest and his month is 165 euros and we have questions were answered. nestles between the Punta de la Mona to the east and the rock of Cerro Gordo to the west. The bay enjoys shelter from west winds creating mostly crystal-clear waters, and is a popular location for water sports & paragliding. There are numerous beach bars and restaurants serving specialities of the region, including tropical salads, fresh fish or paella. The Marina del Este near La Herradura is tucked betwen Punta de la Mona to the west and Cotobro to the east. It boasts a beautiful port, elegantly designed to incorporate select shops, art galleries, bars and restaurants. This small strip of coast also claims to be the best place to dive between Almeria and Gibraltar, and is home to one of the areas leading diving schools.

Nerja
was once a sleepy fishing village but now the town has a population of over 21,000. The Balcón de Europa is a magnificent promenade that was made famous by King Alfonso XII , who’s statue now takes pride of place at the far end. Close by is the 17th century Church of El Salvador, and the beautiful gardens of Capistrano Playa. There are many beaches to be found either side and in front of the town, including Burriana with its numerous cafés and restaurants. Here too, you can take advantage of the water sports on offer, including water skiing, scuba diving and sailing. Just outside Nerja on the coast road towards Maro is a very impressive aquaduct which used to supply the local sugar factory.

Torre del Mar
is just 30 minutes from Malaga, and is the beach resort of Velez Málaga. Its population of 21,000 grows between June and September to 150,000. The towns attractions have expanded over the last few years to cope with the demand, and now the four kilometres of beach have been enhanced by an impressive promenade, which stretches all the way to Caleta de Vélez, a port providing over 200 berths and offering sailing and water sports. Throughout the summer, there are many Chiringuitos on the beach, serving fresh barbequed fish and ice cold beers. In 2002, Paseo de Larios was pedestrianized, and is now a tranquil promenade, with plenty of pavement cafés and restaurants. At the seafront end of Larios is a line of bars and discos which continue throughout the night on Fridays and Saturdays. The history of Torre is uncertain, but it is thought that it might have been part of an ancient Greek settlement, known as Mainake, which was destroyed by the Carthaginians. Tombs of the Carthaginians were found at the mouth of the river Velez. More recently, it was a small fishing village until major development began in the 1970’s.

Lake Viñuela
is a 15 minute drive from the N340 Autovia, leaving at the junction for Velez Malaga. Head inland along the A356; this direction also leads to numerous inland white villages. The first turning on our map is to Benamocarra, which is sign posted to the right after the last roundabout into Velez Malaga. This road will take you back over the main road and then also on to Iznate, and divides to take you to Almachar, El Borge and Cutar. The second turning off the A356 is on the right (after the Repsol garage) to Trapiche. Continue on the A356, and immediately you will see another junction on the left, sign posted to Benamargosa, Triana, Comares and Cutar. This road will also take you as far as Rio Gordo (for a scenic drive). There is a popular Spanish bar on the corner of this junction called El Cruz. Back on the A356, continue on and you will pass another junction on the right, to Canillas de Aceituno, and finally you will see Lake Vinuela in front of you. Turn right before the lake for Puente de Don Manuel, Alcaucin, Viñuela and Periana; carry straight on for Los Romanes, Rio Gordo and Colmenar.

Frigiliana
encompass 39.74 sq km within which live just over 3,000 people year round. Frigiliana is a popular tourist destination, and because there are many holiday homes here, the population triples during the summer months. The history of Frigiliana dates from prehistoric times. The village has been inhabited by numerous civilisations from the Phoenicians and Romans to the Arabs, who had the greatest impact on the town’s development. During the Christian reconquest, Frigiliana was the site of numerous battles culminating in the famous battle of the Rock of Frigiliana in 1569 which ended in the complete expulsion of the Moorish people. One can learn the history of this struggle by walking through the streets of the historic section where there are a series of twelve ceramic plaques posted about which explain the entire story.
