Celebrating 70 Years of Dior at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs By Jessica Infantino Trumble

I love when a visit to a big city coincides with an interesting museum exhibit, which was exactly the case with “Christian Dior, Couturier du Rêve” at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris. This special exhibit celebrates the 70th anniversary of the founding of the House of Dior and one of the most notable fashion designers of the 20th century.

V

isitors are treated to a gorgeous multimedia retrospective of more than 300 gowns along with countless accessories, sketches, video and other artifacts to bring its history from 1947 to the present to life. If you love art, design or fashion and happen to be in Paris for New Year, there’s still time to see this truly amazing exhibit for yourself before it wraps up in early January 2018. You won’t be disappointed. We bought tickets in advance after hearing that the queue to get into the exhibit can be very long, and even if you do buy tickets beforehand you should still be prepared for a wait as there is limited space inside the exhibit area. We purchased ours online a few days prior, arrived shortly after the museum opened and still waited about an hour to get inside. It looks like the museum has since instituted a time slot ticket policy (vs. day-specific only), which should help alleviate some of the wait time, but definitely be prepared just in case.

Above - The Bar suit from Dior’s first collection in 1947 Additionally, I found that there was so much to take in that we easily spent a couple of hours at the exhibit and didn’t have time to explore the museum’s permanent collection so plan your time accordingly. Once inside, there are 2 sections that span a total of more than 32,000 square feet. Beginning with Dior’s early years as an art gallery owner in Paris in the 1920s who dreamed of being an architect, it was this appreciation for art and design along with other sources of inspiration – his artists friends, the architecture of Paris, his world travels and even the flowers in the garden of his childhood home in Normandy – that would play out in his work for years to come. With a wealth of artistic and visual culture to draw from, he launched the House of Dior in 1947. His first collection redefined the feminine shape in the post-war years and helped put Paris on the map as the fashion capital of the world. Dior’s “New Look” was characterized by nipped waists, ample busts, soft shoulders and sculpted hips, the most famous example being the Bar suit (named after the nearby bar at the Plaza Athénée hotel, a favourite haunt for fashionable women at the time), which remains an identifiable and iconic look

today. The exhibit also celebrates colour as a unifying theme across pieces, styles and eras and the importance of the atelier and craftspeople, and showcases the work of Dior’s 6 successors including the first female and current creative director Maria Grazia Chiuri. The grand finale is a sparkling room designed to evoke the glitz and glamour of the lavish post-war balls, which provided an opportunity to create sumptuous gowns once again. The exhibit also pays homage to the celebrities who have famously worn Dior throughout the years, ranging from Grace Kelly, Marilyn Monroe and Elizabeth Taylor to Princess Diana, Marion Cotillard and Jennifer Lawrence, who accepted her first Oscar for Silver Linings Playbook in a timeless pink Dior gown. If you are able to go: “Christian Dior, Couturier du Rêve” at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs runs until 7th January, 2018. Tickets include access to the museum’s permanent collection. Trends and Designs in Decoration for 2018

Homes today are perceived more than ever as a refuge from a stressful and unstable environment. The search for more natural finishes, softer materials (at the top of this list is velvet) and spaces in which to feel good are some of the keys for 2018. Shapes become more curved and enveloping in 2018, the dimensions of key pieces, such as sofas become larger, all part of the idea for making the home a space from which to flee from noise and stress.

Bathrooms The room itself should be simple with straight lines and the warmth highlighted with natural materials like wood. White and grey are the two main colours and this can be combined with the latest developments in home automation.

The bathroom should also be a space that is more interesting in 2018, with character, halfway between natural and romantic. Think of wallpaper with large plant motifs, large leaves, bananas or more complex designs. Also gold finished accessories such as mirrors and taps.

Kitchen The days of the total white kitchen are over. In 2018 we see more options and a little more colour. Such as: tall white cabinets and low gray furniture, this combination visually enlarges kitchens. In addition new colours are introduced such as; navy blue and turquoise. The use of materials in the kitchen has more of a lived-in feel, think imitation cement, oxidized steel and natural stone. As for space, simplicity prevails. So clear the clutter from your kitchen especially around the preparation and sink areas. Vinyl floor coverings are also back.

Living Room

10 THE MARKET PLACE

It’s goodbye vintage, the excess is over and the trend is more towards a slightly exaggerated mid-century style, neutral colours prevail, walls are soft in tone and metallic finishes, especially for the lights, add a slightly more strident accent.

Distribution Open space still continues to be on trend but the look is to separate rooms without interuppting the flow. Having glass panelling and sliding glass doors help keep the concept of plenty of space but at the same time keep rooms independent.

Illumination Lamps are becoming increasingly important in your home. They are a fundamental element in order to provide a singular and sculptural focal point to the interior. A good lamp is capable of qualifying a space by itself, especially if floors and walls are enriched with textures and colours and the ceilings adorned with plaster mouldings.

Colour In decorating the home the important part is the tones not pure colours. There are several colours that will dominate interiors in 2018. One is millennial rose which is a soft and warm tone that combines with yellow pineapple tone for accessories or accents. Dark blue is popular for kitchens and bathrooms and accent walls. Odd bursts of colour are also on trend, espcially colours that break the mould and are a little crazy, a colour that makes a statement in an otherwise serene area. Animals and plants conquer design and natural fibre baskets are on point.

Furniture Nordic style is over, 2018 welcomes Italian and French style pieces, much more elegant with curves, velvet upholstery or finished in bright lacquers and bold colours. Sofas are simple lines but welcoming and much larger (if thats possible!).

Closed for holidays on re-opening 8th January

Local News Local News Local News Seeds dropped over fire damaged area near Competa

A Guardia Civil helicopter recently dropped over 30 different types of seeds for trees that are native to the area over the fire damaged Barranco Perez ravine. This project is the first of its kind in Andalucia, it will spread 27,000 different seed bombs containing 30 different species which are native to the area such as: pines, carob, rosemary, lavender, grasses, mustard. The so called bombs are made of clay which according to the Environment Chief protects the seeds from birds, rodents and insects. The Environment Chief was confident that this project would be a success, as other experiments of this type had yielded 80% success rates. The area called the Barranco Perez, belongs to Competa and is part of the Sierra Tejeda, Alhama y Almijara mountain range. Two hundred hectares of forest were destroyed by wildfires in 2014. According to the Environment Chief the experiment will be monitored closely and if it is successful, similar projects could be carried out in other areas.

Gadgets to meet your New Year Resolutions

I have never been a big resolution maker! Obviously, setting goals is a good thing, but the ritual too often results in January hype that fades very quickly! How many times have you set a resolution only to have forgotton it by February ? One way to help is to find tools that will help you stick to them. This is where some of these latest gadgets come into play... Goal: Grow something (and keep it alive)

My attempts at greening my thumb tend to end with succulent corpses in the trash after too many missed watering sessions. 2018 is the year this ends, partly thanks to the rise of smart planters. Click and Grow's version takes care of watering for you and even controls light, making it (almost) impossible to kill your plants. Click and Grow The Smart Garden 9 available at eu.clickandgrow.com for E139.95

Goal: Print more photos

Goal : Clean the House More Going to work and simultaneously cleaning the house sound like two incongruous, not to mention impossible, activities. However, iRobot's latest vacuuming robot offers the best of both worlds. Use the app to schedule the vacuum to clean while your gone, and monitor the status from your office chair. The Roomba 895 is better at picking up hair from rugs and cleaning under furniture than its predecessors. Buy it from amazon.de for E547.

Goal: Keep closer tabs on how you're sleeping Many smartwatches offer sleep tracking, but most feel bulky and unnatural to fall asleep wearing. The recently released Motiv Ring solves this problem: In addition to activity tracking throughout the day, the lightweight ring measures your sleep duration, showing you trends over the course of the week giving you a bigger picture look at hours of shut-eye.

I take almost all my photos on an iPhone and while I love looking at them there, I also find myself wanting copies to hang on the fridge and random spots around my home. Enter Fujifilm's Instax Share SP-3 Printer. The portable, WiFi-connected device makes it easy to transfer smartphone photos to 2.4 x 2.4-inch print-outs. If you want to send the images to friends via traditional snail mail, you can also edit your photos and add filters via the Instax Share app.

Motiv ring is $199 and is available from mymotiv.com

Buy from www.shop.fujifilm.co.uk for ÂŁ174.99

Available from amazon.co.uk are various starter kits, bulbs, dimmer switch and hue bridge. Apple enabled and works with alexa.

Goal: Wake up and get going earlier in the morning The shorter days of winter are not ideal for meeting this goal. However, Philips' smart lighting can help. After installing the bulbs, you can use your iPhone or Android phone to set specific wake hours. You can even program the bulbs to start slowly brightening in the morning, making the process of getting up a little more natural - and less painful!

Car News

by Martin Ward

First Driving Impressions – Volkswagen T-Roc, International Press Event, Lisbon. We landed at Lisbon airport on a bright, sunny morning for the first drive of this new compact SUV from Volkswagen. The cars were in the car park, all lined up and ready T’Roc & Roll... so we set off for a days test drive.

T

he first car we drove was powered by a 2.0-litre TDI that produces 150ps. It goes from 0-62mph in 8.4 seconds and a top speed of 155mph (where permitted - which is virtually nowhere). This engine really feels smooth and quiet and suits the T-Roc perfectly, but as diesel sales are diminishing it is unlikely that many sales of the T-Roc will be diesel powered. We drove the car up into the hills and then on the coastal roads, all very spectacular and a great place to launch a great car. The name T-Roc, Volkswagen say, comes from the ‘T’ which refers to the cars successful forerunners, the Tiguan and Touareg, which offer a high seating position and robust qualities of the body and running gear. The ‘Roc’ has been the word Rock which stands for the positioning of the T-Roc as a Crossover, which combines the dominance of an SUV with the agility of a compact hatchback. Maybe this is all a marketing fluffy statement, but actually the name does actually work without any explanations. The exterior styling is bold and very different from the VW design team. It must have taken somebody very brave at the top of the company to sign it off, but it does look brilliant from every angle. The lines are superb and you really can’t find anything not to like about the exterior. Crisp lines all around the car make it look every bit a purposeful and dynamic SUV. The interior is clever, yet simple. No fancy pieces of plastic, hidden storage or unwanted lids that tend to rattle after a few miles of driving. The top of the dash is almost flat and very uncluttered, which does not cause any reflections in the windscreen. The knobs, dials, levers and 20 THE MARKET PLACE

buttons on the dash, by the steering wheel and in the centre console are easy to use, understand and intuitive. The T-Roc seats are firm, yet comfortable, making this the sort of car you could drive for many miles without any aches or pains. There is plenty of rear seat room for leg, head and shoulders, and for the size of car it offers a good interior package. The boot is largest in class with 445-litres of cargo capacity. After the lunch break we then got into a 2.0-litre petrol version. This engine produces 187ps and we quickly found out that this is more than enough. This car had the 4MOTION AWD system so we thought we would give it a try on the sand-dunes near Cascais. It all worked perfectly and got us out of any difficulties without any problems, although I don’t think we would have attempted it in a 2WD. Most importantly, we got some great photos of it in the sand. This engine proved to be quick and quiet making it a great car to drive; you could just drive it, and drive it. The ride and handling was perfect and it went round some of the corners like it was on rails. The T-Roc comes fully loaded with standard safety equipment, with even more as an option. The Active infotainment system is easy to use. Some models have a 11.7-inch screen with high-quality graphics, but even the standard screen is a perfectly adequate 6.5inch touchscreen. Other engines available are the 1.0-litre TSI 115ps and the recently introduced 1.5 TSI EVO petrol, plus the 1.6 TDI. Volkswagen UK say that around 80% of all T-Roc sales will be petrol, and this percentage may prove even higher. Unfortunately neither

the 1.0 or 1.5 petrol engines were available to test in Portugal. But having driven both of these engines in other Volkswagen's and Volkswagen Group vehicles, I feel confident that they will work really well in the T-Roc. The 1.0 is sure to prove very popular and will have more than enough power. The 1.5 will be superb in this compact SUV and will be very desirable. Such good, strong and economical petrol engines leaves the diesels a bit in the shade. The T-Roc is available in many colours, many of them quite bold. With contrasting roof and pillar colours, contrasting dashboard colours and various trim versions, the T-Roc offers a good level of personalisation. The T-Roc measurers 4,234mm long, and this compares to its big brother the Tiguan, which is 252mm longer. The Golf hatch measures 4,258mm so is just slightly larger. The Audi Q2 is 4,191, Nissan Juke 4,135mm, Nissan Qashqai is 4,394mm, Peugeot 2008 – 4,158mm and the Renault Captur is 4,122mm, so it sits nicely in size amongst some good and popular competitors. At time of writing no prices have yet been announced, but it is expected to start at around £19,000 with first UK deliveries in December. Volkswagen have got this five-door SUV just about right in all aspects. It looks great, there's a good choice of colours, it drives well, has the right choice of engines and gearboxes, is well put together with a high level of quality, has the option of 4MOTION and a long list of standard equipment, safety features and Infotainment. As the SUV gets more and more popular (and this trend is likely to continue) then VW are launching this car at exactly the right time.

THE ARTS SOCIETY NERJA (Formerly Nerja NADFAS) Tuesday January 16th 2018 The Cultural Centre, Calle Granada, Nerja Lecture Starts at 6pm. (Doors open at 5pm and tickets are only available on the night)

FEDERICO GARCÍA LORCA: HIS LIFE, TIMES AND LITERARY LEGACY Accompanied by readings of his poetry A fully illustrated Lecture by Roberta Kettel Sponsored by De Cotta Law A description of the life and works of the most wellknown Spanish poet and dramatist of the 20th century - an iconic figure personifying the tragedy of the Spanish Civil War. His life is seen against the background of Spanish history at that time from the 1898 Spanish American War (the year of his birth) through the Primo de Riviera dictatorship and the Second Republic to the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War in 1936 (the year of his execution). The themes of his works - he wrote 11 books of poems and 9 plays - will be discussed, and there will be readings of a selection of his poems in Spanish and English, as well as a look at the importance of the three Spanish cities in his life: Granada, Madrid and Barcelona, and his close friendship with Salvador Dalí.

Since the C19 English high society had ‘wintered over’ on the Cote d’Azur, but always left by April. In the early 1920’s, however, an intoxicating mix of artists, writers, musicians and international visitors, inspired by a mythological seascape of luminous colours, created a new summer season. Sun tans and sportswear soon became ‘de rigueur’ in the chic new coastal resorts, villas and hotels. This liberating playground of ideas across the visual design arts was stimulated by impresarios Serge Diaghilev and Paul Poiret. Traditional boundaries were torn down. Matisse, Picasso, Dufy, Cocteau, and Chanel merged the worlds of fashion, theatre and interiors. Cole Porter, Scott Fitzgerald, and the intriguing Gerald and Sara Murphy, introduced an American perspective and attracted an influential new set of discerning patrons and collectors. We will ‘time travel’ to meet them.

The Royal British Legion, Nerja Branch Well, we ate, drank and were very merry on Friday the 10th Nov at the Poppy Ball. This year as with last, we joined with the Los Romanes branch, and 136 people attended. Once again I find myself wondering where the last year has gone to. It surely can’t be 12 months since I last put up the Christmas tree, wrapped the presents, ate too much lovely food and chocolate, drank too much mulled wine, etc. made New Year resolutions only to break them on the 2nd Jan! But here we are again at that time of the year. First of all, let me say a huge Thank You to all those of you who helped us raise E10,000 for the Poppy Appeal 2017. Several people deserve a mention but unfortunately there isn’t enough space for me to name them all individually but a couple who should get our thanks are Dorothy Allan, our Poppy Appeal co-ordinator and Kevin from Competa. Dorothy is the lady you may have seen outside Lidl or walking around Nerja putting up notices or collecting for us. Kevin is the gentleman who single-handedly filled one collection box in 24 hours and then proceeded to collect over 300 euros in the village. So, thank you to all in the village who contributed. Their efforts have been incredible and along with all the other supporters enabled us to send such a princely sum this year. We Thank You All most sincerely….we couldn’t do it without you. Along with our monthly lunches at Al Andalus Hotel and Nuevas Arenas Restaurant we are currently planning our programme for the year and hope to organise something special to mark the centenary of the end of WW1 and also the 30th anniversary of the founding of our Nerja Branch.

We always aim to raise money but hope to do it in most enjoyable ways. So if anyone who hasn’t already joined us, would like to please don’t hesitate we always like to welcome new friends. We are a friendly bunch and the contact addresses can be found at the bottom of this article. We will of course be organising the usual activities throughout the year and if and when we have details of any event they will be on DIGAME and advertised around the town. All are welcome at any event and there are no rules about height, weight, religion, colour or class, no uniforms, no funny handshakes and definitely no passwords required. We would just like you to come along; The Chairman and Committee would just like to wish everyone a Happy, Healthy and Safe New Year. January Film & Tapas Evening at FTK “The Ultimate Gift” is the first film of 2018 in the popular Film & Tapa evenings at FTK in Nerja; it will be screened at 7.30pm on Friday 12th January at FTK’s premises in Pasaje San Miguel (around the corner from the main Mercadona.) This intriguing film works its storyline out from the death of an oil tycoon, Red Stevens, and his greedy family gathered in the office of his lawyer; among them his reckless and selfish grandson Jason, who hated him. The grandson “knew” that his inheritance was going to be the gift of money and lots of it; his grandfather, on the other hand, had rather different ideas and his will challenged the young playboy to a journey of discoveries in the guise of twelve apparently simple tasks which the old man called “gifts” and which, if successfully accomplished, would lead him to inheriting the “ultimate gift”. As the story unfolds the audience’s initial reaction towards Jason - which was 24 THE MARKET PLACE

something approaching away. Recommended viewing, loathing - begins to soften especially as the plot has as it starts to become clear many unexpected twists and that Red had devised a plan turns before its surprising for Jason to experience denouement! For more information call Along the way the young 951 834 432 or email man meets a variety of fotk.spain@gmail.com individuals who give him valuable - but not always welcome - life lessons. Little Leslie Thomas. by little Jason engages with the process - as much to his own surprise as that of the lawyers who were adjudicating his fulfilment of the tasks - and the film plays with our emotions through moments of joy and pathos, achievement and tragedy, hope and desperation. A cliff-hanger to the end it is never certain if Jason will stick with it or revert to his spoiled past and throw it all

Astrology explained - Manish Kumar Arora Market Place astrologer Manish Kumar Arora is a world-renowned astrologer, numerologist and tarot card reader based in India whose monthly horoscopes are read by thousands around the world in scores of publications. Here he answers some questions to help us find out more about him and the world of astrology. So Manish, when and how did you get involved in astrology? Was it a calling of sorts? As I began to move into adulthood, I was immediately drawn into this field that seemed to encompass the planets, and yet drew a clear connection to the workings of our lives here on earth. Why are we instantly drawn to some and repelled by others? Why do we find ourselves repeatedly befriending those born in the same week or month? Why do we react the way we do, communicate the way we do? Why we make fortunes in some periods in business and why some periods do not fetch returns? It’s all there in one’s natal chart. It’s what drew me to astrology in the first place. So, involving myself in Astrology was a logical process of my quest to know more about these things.

How did you know you could do it, read people’s futures accurately? Was there a particular, epiphany moment? Seeing other astrologers reading horoscopes, I was fascinated how with the help of 2-6 charts and some tables, astrologers were able to forecast about past, present and future of people, their finance pattern, their marital life etc. Curiosity and excitement led me into learning astrology. During astrology classes, test cases given to me for analysis drew appreciation from my teacher, making me confident and instilled in me passion and enthusiasm to delve deeper into this wonderful subject. It was not a particular epiphany moment but a gradual process of learning and growth.

What is the craziest thing you read in someone’s future that actually came true? This is a very interesting question and takes me down memory lane to early months of 2017. Bollywood movie, ‘’Dangal’’ has already been released in India in December 2016 and was doing earth shattering business. When the news came that its stakeholders were going to release the movie in China, I was able to predict, with the help of K.P. Astrology tool ‘Fortuna’, that its China business may extend beyond Rs 1000 crores, while the existing highest grossing record of a Bollywood movie in China was held by ‘’P K’’ with over 100 crores. Here I was predicting a crazy forecast of ‘’Dangal’’ making ten times more business than held by an existing record movie. This prediction was declared absurd and crazy by my friends. Ultimately ‘’Dangal’’ went on to 26 THE MARKET PLACE

exceed Rs 1300 crores – an all time high for a Bollywood movie in China.

What do you think is the strength of Astrology reading, reading people’s characters or reading the future? I elaborate the greatest benefit of Astrology through an example. If you have to cross a river and if you know where the water level is deeper, you will take your boat accordingly keeping in view the flow of water. Hence, Astrology gives you the guidance to follow your path with concrete directions. People who cannot find the answers to the questions on their minds through other means may turn to horoscopes to find some guidance. The mind, the body and the environment, and all they contain, form an undivided field and each of our chart features can express themselves in any and all of three main arenas – the inner world of thoughts, beliefs and feelings, the outer world of events and relationships and the interface where these two worlds meet – which is the body.

Your readings of my sign are always pretty accurate, how often do you get it wrong? Do people complain much?

Thanks very much for your compliment. I have been providing consultation to clients through astrology, numerology, tarot reading and offering them psychic advice for the last twenty years with a good degree of success. My clients have benefitted immensely being guided by my advice to them on issues like love, marriage, relationships, career, finance, business, investment, speculation, education. Overall, I have shared a happy rapport and get respect from people for the same.

How can the time and day a person is born have any real influence on your character? How does that work? K.P. Astrology, which I follow, is based on the principle that the birth of an individual at a particular moment of time, place of city, and date of the month characterizes his present and future and is based on his Karma done in past life according to Karmic Law. Every city has a unique latitude and longitude and a local mean time (L.M.T.) is generated to get to an individual’s horoscope and is of utmost importance to analyse his present and future events. Every L.M.T., at any moment of time has distinct vibrations and energies which are quite different from a

place having another L.M.T. and thus forms the base for analysing a horoscope.

What do you say to people when they say astrology is a load of nonsense? Astrology is a divine science. The study of astrology will help you sort out all your options and to act at the proper time. When you are going through a hard time, astrology can give you hope because you will know when the cosmos will give you a hand to get you back on your feet. When you know you’re due for some good fortune, you will have time to prepare so you can position yourself to benefit from it.

2017 was a mixed bag for many of us. How is 2018 shaping up generally? 2018 promises a good year with general growth in economy. More countries will become united and take a firm and concrete stand against terrorism. Peace, harmony and love will prevail among people. However, we may also face more natural calamities but assistance from friendly countries will be available for affected nations. There will be more advancement in technology. Women all over the world will get more respect and they will occupy strategic posts.

K.P. Astrology KP astrology was invented by Shri K.S. Krishna Murthy. He was a wellknown Astrologer from the state of Tamil Nadu, India. He researched on various Indian and Western Astrology methods and developed a new method called KP (Krishnamurthy Paddhati) Astrology whose results have been found to be very accurate. This method uses basic principles of Vedic Astrology and modifications have been done through his unique method of astrology which is basically known as Sub Lord Theory.

Manish's Zodiac predictions - January Manish Kumar Arora, K.P. Astrologer, Numerologist, Tarot Card Reader & Vastu Consultant Facebook: manishastroconsultant email: manish@manishastrologer.com Aries ( 21 March – 19 April )

You can come up with creative solutions to ideas, and have plenty of focus for creative projects and ventures, but don’t care much for the little stuff. You prefer to focus on the positives, not wanting to get bogged down by serious matters, and want to laugh, enjoy yourself, and be merry. You may come across as friendlier, funnier, or more theatrical.

Taurus ( 20 April – 20 May )

You are taking charge of your career in January, as your ambition is stimulated and others are taking note of your competence. You can focus on something intensely and learn as much as you can about it to become somewhat of an expert, and people can look to you for your expertise. You enjoy spending time with like-minded people, and can have more communications with friends, groups, or online.

Gemini ( 21 May – 20 June)

Your sense of adventure runs high this month, and you are itching for a change of pace. Opportunities for travel and education figure strongly. You’re likely to make some important connections if you venture forth onto unfamiliar ground. Your schedule may be hectic, particularly on a social level, and there can be some challenges organizing your finances. Avoid jumping into new endeavours that require big outlays of cash.

Cancer ( 21 June – 22 July )

Your hunger for adventure or learning may come into focus. All of the attention you’ve been giving to mundane affairs has you wondering when you’re going to have some fun. You want to take a leap of faith now. You may come across as more charming, graceful, and diplomatic. You can organize truces, make compromises, meet people in the middle, and help everyone to get along.

Leo ( 23 July – 22 August )

You can have the opportunity to pursue one of your dreams, be more focused on your future, pursue something outside of the box that could lead to great new things. You can take up a cause and try to connect with the world. Your focus toward work and try to be as productive and efficient with your time and energy as you can to get the most work done possible.

Virgo ( 23 August – 22 September )

The month may not seem to be as productive as most, but in fact you are building your nest, gathering your resources, and preparing for busier months ahead. You may be considering a big move or other change that affects your domestic life in powerful ways. You’re tuned in to the emotions of others and of yourself, which is good for helping you to be more understanding, but you can lack objectivity.

28 THE MARKET PLACE

Libra ( 23 September – 22 October )

You have the focus you need, and you can get through all of the grunt work and tasks and chores that have piled up. This can also be a time for you to focus on other people’s money (debts, taxes, loans, inheritances, joint finances). You are willing to embrace unusual, mystical, or spiritual philosophies.

Scorpio ( 23 October – 21 November )

You want to have some peace and harmony in your life so your mind works at its optimum level, and you can try to bring some mental balance in, focusing on all areas of life equally. It’s also a good period for gaining new information that helps you to move forward, including great advice, so stay connected and listen attentively. The more willing you are to put yourself in the limelight, the more positive the rewards.

Sagittarius ( 22 November -21 December )

A sense of peace regarding work and health routines is with you this month, and your social life tends to take centre stage. New beginnings in the relationship department are a theme around mid-month, or an event can occur that brings about realizations that something has to change. This can be a good time to communicate clearly with your family, or have better communication at home.

Capricorn ( 22 December – 19 January ) Your imagination can be active, and you can feel more spiritual and intuitive. New interests, projects, and learning endeavours are featured and these may come about due to professional pressures or challenges. Career shifts can be sudden. More contact with family, siblings, and friends is pleasurable and helpful. It can be easier to find a close relationship, a partner has their best interests at heart and is especially supportive.

Aquarius ( 20 January – 18 February )

You are easily engrossed by special subjects and projects this month, and eagerly throw yourself into learning and producing. You enjoy being around others because they help challenge your mind and keep you mentally stimulated. You want to keep your mind busy with lots to do to use up the extra mental energy that you have now. New opportunities can arise in the last few days of the month, but be sure you don’t take on too much.

Pisces ( 19 February – 20 March )

You can come up with a new idea that you’re excited about, commit yourself to lots of little projects, are more sociable, and more outspoken. You may find you can come up with your best ideas when you have someone with you, a partner to help guide you. You can be in a more compromising mood, concerned with fairness, and play the mediator.

New study suggests where you walk or run can wipe out the benefits of exercise A new study suggests that putting up with the gruelling run or long walk on the treadmill (where 10 mins feels like an hour) might be more beneficial to your workout than if you were to step outside for some “fresh” air.

5 myths about Botox

Myth 1 – It will do you harm long-term This is the most common myth. It's surprising as Botox has been around for 20 years in the cosmetic realm and longer in general medical applications. There’s been something like 30 million plus treatments worldwide, and there are thousands of clinical papers on Botox, so there’s a lot of evidence-based medicine to support its use. Myth 2 - It builds up in your body over time Physiologically that is not what happens. Once the Botox molecule binds to that receptor on the nerve ending, that complex receptor breaks down. What follows is the protein being reabsorbed and metabolised by your body. Yep, you basically pee it out. Myth 3 - It leaves you looking frozen A recent survey of women aged 20-49 found 35 per cent thought Botox would give you a frozen unnatural look. That’s not the case, there are many people using it who you wouldn’t even know. Myth 4 – Botox is only for your wrinkles There are some weird and wonderful uses. You can also use it for slimming of the jaw, you can inject the chewing muscle and it narrows the face. For people with a gummy smile, you can weaken those muscles to let the upper lip drop. Then there is Botox for sweating – feet, underarms, palms – which can be life changing for some patients. Myth 5 - Botox becomes less effective as time goes on Truth bomb: what’s happening as time goes on is the other signs of ageing – and Botox only tackles one of them – wrinkles. 34 THE MARKET PLACE

Researchers from Imperial College London found that the toxic air in built-up city centres prevents the positive effects on the lungs and heart which are usually gained from exercise. The researchers asked 119 people, who were over the age of 60, to take a two-hour stroll through London’s Hyde Park and the polluted Oxford Street - arguably the city's most congested zone. They found that after a stroll through the park, all participant's lung capacity improved within just one hour, and their

arteries became 24 per cent less stiff. On the other hand, an increase in blood flow that is usually associated with exercise, was virtually absent after their stroll through Oxford Street. Although the participants weren’t particularly young, the study’s senior author, Professor Fan Chung, explained the pollution in the air applies to all age groups, and the findings act as a call for greater access to green spaces. These findings are important as for many people, such as the elderly or those with chronic disease, very often the only exercise they can do is to walk. But while air pollution should be considered when choosing your run or walk route, there are countless physical and mental benefits to cardiovascular exercise, such as your heart health.

New study shows eating little and often is better for resisting cravings While the function of eating is to nourish the body, this is not what actually compels us to seek out food. Instead, it’s hunger, with its stomach-growling sensations and gnawing pangs that propel us to the fridge. According to a new study though, the answer to stopping food cravings is to eat smaller meals throughout the day. Researchers at the University of Pennsylvania in the US used brain scans of mice to try to understand why we become so excited when we see food headed our way in restaurants – and why we get so upset when we realise it’s not ours, distinguishing between the biological effects of simply seeing or smelling food and actually consuming food on reducing the activity of the hunger neurons, AgRP. Agouti-related protein-expressing neurons, or AgRP neurons, control the sensation of hunger in the brain. “Being hungry can feel unpleasant and these are the neurons that seem to mediate this,” said J. Nicholas Betley, assistant professor at the University of Pennsylvania. “When these neurons are firing, they're basically telling you, you'd better go get food; you're starving… They're a sensitive alarm system. And what this study conclusively demonstrated is that nutrients are the primary regulators of this alarm system,'” said Betley. Betley and his team found that the only way to keep those hunger neurons down was for the body to receive the calories and nutrients from food, after testing with a calorie-containing gel. Until more research is done, Betley believes that eating smaller meals throughout the day can suppress the neurons at a consistent level to where the body doesn't experience a starving sensation.

Baviera, Tuesday 12th December Turkey Trot Christmas Competition It was a clear and sunny Tuesday that greeted the 34 golfers that took part in the Turkey Trot Christmas individual Stableford competition at Baviera. All of the players got into the spirit of the Christmas themed event by wearing festive garments of some description as they got prepared to teeoff for the round. There were various “Santas” and “Santa’s little helpers” to bring a smile to those that had gathered on the way to the 1st tee. Following the heavy rain from the previous day, course conditions could be best described as “soft, heavy in places”. As such, the course was playing long, with no run on the ball on the fairways.

I would like to share with all the readers that in this beautiful area we still have endangered species to look at. This was taken on 25th November 2017 at 2pm. It's sitting in my lime tree. I just love it and have a few good photos. I hope you like it too! Lorri Wornum, Torrox Campo 40 THE MARKET PLACE

A few of the players got out of the traps early, notably Rob Nicholson, who had 20 points after his front 9, which also included the only “2” of the day at the 8th hole. This was worth quite a few Centimos to him, so, well done Rob. The back 9 proved difficult for all but a couple of players, with scoring points harder to come by. Those that fared best on the back 9, particularly Mike Frayne & Ian Fraser, managed to get themselves into the prizes. All in all, a lovely day out was had by all and congratulations to the prize-winners. A special “thank you” goes to Gill Boutel, Gill Sibson and Peggy Nicholson for taking the time and making the effort to prepare the lavish prizes, organising the Xmas nibbles & refreshments at the 11th tee and arranging the “after golf” meal at the Baviera Clubhouse. Your hard work in making the “Turkey Trot” a success was really appreciated, and we are grateful to have you all as part of the GINS organisation. Men: 1st Mike Frayne 35 pts, 2nd Alan Jones 34 pts, 3rd Ian Fraser 33 pts. Ladies: 1st Jackie Viles 30 pts, 2nd Jose Peree 29 pts, 3rd Marlyse Blair 23 pts.

Jottings from the Citizens Advice Bureau Meeting in Torre del Mar Are you concerned about your rights and general living in Spain? Well, if you have a question or something you cannot resolve there is an organisation that may be able to give you a little guidance, Citizens Advice Bureau in Spain. I went along to a recent discussion with expats and Myra Cecilia Azzopardi, the Founder of Citizens Advice Spain.

Padron - "Empadronamiento" The Padron is Spain's population register, where the official addresses of all residents in Spain are recorded for the purpose of carrying out civil procedures. In simple terms it is a certificate you get when you register at your local town hall in the area where you reside. The certificate is called "certificado de empadronamiento" The padron records are used for census and local, regional, national or european elections. Through this the regional authorities (the Junta de Andalucia) will calculate what public services the town/village requires. That is why town halls want you to register if you are a resident in Spain as more people generally means more money from the central pot. If you sign on the padron you can expect to take advantage of more services in your locality. There is the possibility of help in the home, this can be especially useful as you get older or if illness occurs. Depending on your means there is also the possibility that you could be entitled to a cleaner, nursing care or meals brought to your home. If you are a resident and you are on the padron and are over 65 you can receive cheaper travel, cheaper entrances to museums, hotels and other discounts such as those for hearing aids and glasses. This is called the "tarjeta 65" it is a special card that will be issued to you, you can apply for this at your local social security office but you will need proof of residency and your padron certificate. There is a small reduction in IBI for being on the padron, go to your town hall and ask for the reduction. You may also qualify for a non contributory pension if you have lived 10 years here (well actually 10 years in EU, 2 years in Spain) it will be income assessed, usually you have to have income less than 360 per month.

... town halls want you to register if you are a resident in Spain as more people generally means more money from the central pot...

If you are just a regular visitor to Spain or have a holiday home here and it is not your main residence, you should not be on the padron. Unfortunately, some town halls push foreigners to register but this is incorrect as then the census information may be passed to the tax authorities and they may think you are here more permanently and wonder why you are not contributing. You are tax resident in Spain on the 184th day you are here. Popular Myth Resolved : Despite what many people say, you do not need to be on the padron to buy a car here in Spain. Remember : If something changes, you will need to visit the town hall in order to update the padron.

apply for settled status and go through all the applications again, after all some people could be refused the new status. We are already aware of the difficulties that people in Spain have in trying to renew a lost or damaged residency certificate or change an address. I am sure we would all really like to retain our present residency status and agree that EU nationals should be given the same rights that we have. Unfortunately, the UK government is continuing to make a stand for a system to take away the status of UK nationals living in Spain. The team at the Citizens Advice Bureau Spain were holding a meeting with the European Brexit Negotiating Team in Brussels in order to voice the opinion of residents here. (updates on progress can be found on the CAB website listed at the end of this article.) On a more positive note the UK government have included in their proposal that they will respect reciprocal healthcare for pensioners and that they will also index link pensions with a bilateral agreement which would be made between the UK and Spain. (phew!!) If you are new to Spanish life, after 90 days of being in Spain you should go and register as a resident (residency pertains to the country where you reside). If you are a person that stays here for less than 6 months a year, you can actually get a certificate of non residency from the police station. This confirms you are here less than 6 months, so that if you are questioned by the police or authorities you can show them that and have some peace of mind.

If you have a document that proves your residency for 1 year or more and your Residency & nearing of the Brexit withdrawal date padron certificate you are entitled to If you have had your residency certificate or card for a period of 5 years, you are classed apply for healthcare in Spain if you do as a permanent resident of Spain. However, we all need to be informed of what is not qualify for it through working here happening at the moment regarding the Brexit negotiations. Spain has to follow the or being a pensioner. It is called the European Directive of Movement but the UK did not conform with that directive for "convenio especial" and gives you access EU citizens that live in the UK. Citizens that live in the UK will have to apply for settled to the healthcare here for a contribution of status which will involve some paperwork and costs (that similar to a UK passport). 60 euros per month. It would also mean that after the UK withdrawal date, which is set at March 2019, If you require any further information or residents, permanent or otherwise, will have to apply for settled status and that this advice about all aspects of living in Spain woud have to be reciprocated throughout the 27 EU countries. The art of snacking well Should you satisfy your snack desires? Or should you avoid the snack fix? These questions perplex a lot of people, especially those who are trying to lose weight and efficiently manage calories. The idea of eating extra calories, especially if one is “not hungry,” doesn’t make a lot of sense to most of us. The term snack means different things to different people. Someone might think of a snack as a small bag of crisps to stave off the afternoon munchies. Another person might consider a snack Greek yogurt and an apple. The key with snacking is identifying the purpose of a snack. For most of us, a snack is meant to hold us over because we start feeling hungry before the next meal. Generally, a balanced meal that contains lean protein, healthy fat, complex carbohydrate and vegetables keeps us full and satisfied for three to five hours. Every person is different and everyone’s body is a little bit unique, but this is accurate for the majority of us. So, if meals are scheduled more than four to five hours apart — i.e. lunch at noon and dinner at 6:30 p.m. — then a snack is in order. However, if lunch is 1 p.m. and dinner is generally at 6 p.m., then a snack may not be necessary. It is important to identify the general time frame of meals so that you can determine when you should need a snack to curb your hunger. And if meal times vary from day to day, you may need to have a backup snack so you don’t get yourself in a fix. Here are a few things you should know to make the best choices for you and your body:

Real Food There is no doubt that choosing real, whole, unprocessed foods is the best way to nourish your body. Processing strips foods of a variety of micronutrients (such as vitamins and minerals) and fibre. Those micronutrients are involved in a variety of body processes such as metabolising protein and carbohydrate, 44 THE MARKET PLACE

helping keep your hair, nails and skin healthy, maintaining healthy blood glucose, and preventing a variety of cancers by keeping cells healthy. Choose nourishing foods that fuel your body, supply it with energy and promote healthy appearance and vitality.

Sugars Sugar comes in a lot of different forms and under a lot of deceptive guises. Ever heard of barley malt syrup, beet sugar, coconut sugar, dehydrated cane juice, fruit juice concentrate, maltodextrin or sucrose? There are more than 60 names for sugar so make sure to read those labels. Snack choices with too much added sugar will spike blood glucose and cause it to drop faster, leaving you feeling lethargic and tired. Inspect all packaged food ingredient lists and try to limit added sugar to less than 10 percent of daily calorie intake. Generally speaking if sugar is one of the first three ingredients, you may want to consider alternative choices.

Fibre This remarkable form of carbohydrate helps us feel full and satisfied, reduces cholesterol, helps control blood sugar levels (goodbye cravings!) and normalizes bowel function. The name fibre may sound dull and boring but it is very active in working to keep our bodies healthy and happy. Foods rich in fibre include fruits, vegetables, whole grains, beans, nuts and seeds and they tend to take longer to chew than processed foods and therefore slow down the meal so our brains get the signal we are full. Choose snack foods that naturally contain at least 3 grams of fibre per serving.

Adequate Calories Snacks that do not have enough calories — fewer than 100 — may not keep you feeling full until meal time and you might find yourself reaching for another snack before long. So, reaching for the lowest calorie snack is not the right solution.

Healthy Protein and Fat Protein and fat take longer to digest and therefore can leave you feeling full and satisfied for a longer period of time. Ideas for lean protein include low-fat dairy, edamame, beans or legumes, eggs and even canned tuna or cooked chicken. Healthy fat includes those that are low in saturated fat and higher in unsaturated fats such as almond butter, roasted nuts (unsalted or dry roasted), avocado or guacamole. Every time you eat, you have an opportunity to nourish your body. A snack is no different. Snacks are very useful mini-meals that help many of us get hunger and cravings out of our mind so we can focus on the life we are living. To go through the day without thinking about how we will fuel our bodies in between meals may lead us to make unwise food choices or can cause us to overeat at the next meal. To begin snacking well, you should choose two to three snacks each week that you rotate through each day to give variety without complexity. Make sure you add these foods to your grocery list and pack them in your lunchbox, bag or car so that you are never without. Super easy snack - Strawberry Balls

A.P.A. NERJA APA CHRISTMAS DOG SHOW

walk and meeting everyone. Remember all of our dogs are still looking for their forever home. If you can adopt or foster, please get in touch. Daisy December 16th shined bright and beautiful for the APA Christmas Dog Show extravaganza where many of our dogs won awards and Daisy our big mastin presently in foster, won best in show, whilst Trufo, our little mad eyed terrier who was adopted earlier this year came second best. It was a great day with lots of good music, agility exhibitions, frisbee exhibition, as well as stalls selling all manner of Christmas and dog items and a massive Tombola. Paella and burgers were the food of the day. APA volunteers manned the booths and a special visit with Santa Claus himself in his grotto was a highlight of the day. It was a great success and one we hope to repeat next year.

APA CHRISTMAS PARTY

LOLO’S CHRISTMAS STORY

Our very own Lolo made a splash at the Golf Tournament again, taking the prize for the Best Dressed Dog at the Christmas game. Lolo still can’t believe his luck, being an older dog he was so lucky to have been taken into a loving home when rescued by APA Nerja. So Lolo says “Never give up – there is that special home somewhere.” Perhaps you are looking for an older dog who is also looking for their basket, contact us, we are happy to chat about it.

to a fantastic home. After his goodbyes In Nerja he met up with his flight buddy Liselotte at Malaga airport who assists APA in homing our rescues dogs in Holland. Despite the flight delay, Rubio took it all in his stride and waved Rubio’s Paw goodbye so there will be a new Paw Blog in the next edition. Farewell to all three and thank you to our APA volunteers in Sweden, UK and Holland who make it all possible.

HAPPY LEAVING DAY

Thank you to everyone who attended and helped organise our Christmas Party on 1st December at Casa Grande, Nerja. The evening was a great success. There was a delicious three course meal, fancy dress and live music from Mama Paula. A great evening was had by all and we raised 940 euros.

APA CHRISTMAS DOG WALK

Thank you to everyone who participated in our Christmas Dog Walk on the Balcon de Europa, Nerja on December 3rd. Our dogs loved the 50 THE MARKET PLACE

Wednesday 13 December was a very special, if somewhat busy, day. First to leave was Noodles, off to Sweden on a very early flight. Took a great interest in the airport and once checked in was ready for the off. Noodles has settled well with his new family in Sweden. The back to Nerja, as it was Malchik’s turn to leave with PAWS Transport Services overland to UK. His foster Mum fondly waved him off and Malchik arrived on Saturday evening and has already become a hit with his new family. Finally as evening came, it was time for Rubio who has been with APA Nerja since he was a puppy but now he was making his way to Holland

TAIL TORROX

Fina, the injured dog caught on Baviera Golf Course

Some time ago we wrote about the cost of Tails veterinary care and how our adoption charges just about covered the vets fees, even though Tail like most animal charities, do not pay the full vet fees. Now with dogs being rehomed in other countries we are being asked to do blood tests for Mediterranean diseases which adds additional costs, the monetary difference is becoming even greater. Before anyone points it out, yes we are thrilled to place a dog in a loving home, charge or no charge. Just last month two dogs, at different times, were put in our care. The first was caught at Baviera Golf having been running loose for quite some time with a severely injured front leg, the second was given to one of our supporters having been obviously abandoned because it had a rear leg deformity. Both of these, one a young puppy not a year old, were taken by Tail to see a specialist in Alhaurin and are now expected to undergo major reconstructive surgery in January. This is what we most definitely cannot plan for. When these dogs are recovered and we put them up for adoption it is not a cost we can pass on. Each of these operations is expected to cost not less than 1250 euros, so our average monthly veterinary cost will most certainly rise in January by 50 percent.. Readers always seem surprised that vets costs are our largest expenditure, but we maintain that if we can keep the Refuge dogs healthy that in itself is probably why Tail is succeeding in having so many dogs adopted into loving and caring homes.

La Herradura

nestles between the Punta de la Mona to the east and the rock of Cerro Gordo to the west. The bay enjoys shelter from west winds creating mostly crystal-clear waters, and is a popular location for water sports & paragliding. There are numerous beach bars and restaurants serving specialities of the region, including tropical salads, fresh fish or paella. The Marina del Este near La Herradura is tucked betwen Punta de la Mona to the west and Cotobro to the east. It boasts a beautiful port, elegantly designed to incorporate select shops, art galleries, bars and restaurants. This small strip of coast also claims to be the best place to dive between Almeria and Gibraltar, and is home to one of the areas leading diving schools.

was once a sleepy fishing village but now the town has a population of over 21,000. The Balcón de Europa is a magnificent promenade that was made famous by King Alfonso XII , who’s statue now takes pride of place at the far end. Close by is the 17th century Church of El Salvador, and the beautiful gardens of Capistrano Playa. There are many beaches to be found either side and in front of the town, including Burriana with its numerous cafés and restaurants. Here too, you can take advantage of the water sports on offer, including water skiing, scuba diving and sailing. Just outside Nerja on the coast road towards Maro is a very impressive aquaduct which used to supply the local sugar factory.

Torre del Mar

is just 30 minutes from Malaga, and is the beach resort of Velez Málaga. Its population of 21,000 grows between June and September to 150,000. The towns attractions have expanded over the last few years to cope with the demand, and now the four kilometres of beach have been enhanced by an impressive promenade, which stretches all the way to Caleta de Vélez, a port providing over 200 berths and offering sailing and water sports. Throughout the summer, there are many Chiringuitos on the beach, serving fresh barbequed fish and ice cold beers. In 2002, Paseo de Larios was pedestrianized, and is now a tranquil promenade, with plenty of pavement cafés and restaurants. At the seafront end of Larios is a line of bars and discos which continue throughout the night on Fridays and Saturdays. The history of Torre is uncertain, but it is thought that it might have been part of an ancient Greek settlement, known as Mainake, which was destroyed by the Carthaginians. Tombs of the Carthaginians were found at the mouth of the river Velez. More recently, it was a small fishing village until major development began in the 1970’s.

Lake Viñuela

is a 15 minute drive from the N340 Autovia, leaving at the junction for Velez Malaga. Head inland along the A356; this direction also leads to numerous inland white villages. The first turning on our map is to Benamocarra, which is sign posted to the right after the last roundabout into Velez Malaga. This road will take you back over the main road and then also on to Iznate, and divides to take you to Almachar, El Borge and Cutar. The second turning off the A356 is on the right (after the Repsol garage) to Trapiche. Continue on the A356, and immediately you will see another junction on the left, sign posted to Benamargosa, Triana, Comares and Cutar. This road will also take you as far as Rio Gordo (for a scenic drive). There is a popular Spanish bar on the corner of this junction called El Cruz. Back on the A356, continue on and you will pass another junction on the right, to Canillas de Aceituno, and finally you will see Lake Vinuela in front of you. Turn right before the lake for Puente de Don Manuel, Alcaucin, Viñuela and Periana; carry straight on for Los Romanes, Rio Gordo and Colmenar.

Competa

Clubs & Organizations

has grown considerably over the past few years, having over 35 different nationalities all living in harmony together. Its charming whitewashed streets come together in a central plaza where you will find the Church of La Asunción with its unique golden dome that stands out above the village. There are many fine restaurants, cafés, and tapas bars; and gift shops that sell the local ceramics. Competa is famous for its sweet muscatel wine, which is available in most bars, but highly potent, so drink with care!

Frigiliana

encompass 39.74 sq km within which live just over 3,000 people year round. Frigiliana is a popular tourist destination, and because there are many holiday homes here, the population triples during the summer months. The history of Frigiliana dates from prehistoric times. The village has been inhabited by numerous civilisations from the Phoenicians and Romans to the Arabs, who had the greatest impact on the town’s development. During the Christian reconquest, Frigiliana was the site of numerous battles culminating in the famous battle of the Rock of Frigiliana in 1569 which ended in the complete expulsion of the Moorish people. One can learn the history of this struggle by walking through the streets of the historic section where there are a series of twelve ceramic plaques posted about which explain the entire story.
