10 lesser-known traffic fines in Spain

Text provided by Money SaverSpain.com

We’ve been investigating some of the ways vehicle owners can be fined, even when not driving. Take a look at our list of lesser-known traffic fines in Spain, you might be surprised by some of them. Spanish driving licences come end of the following month. with 12 points, however you 4. Dirty / manipulated number plates may be surprised to find out Get 80E ready for the fine if your number plates are illegible, even if your car is parked. you have 15 points on yours. And don’t even think about adding a sticker on a number plate, anything that How? If during 3 years you interferes with the letters and numbers could result in a fine too. don’t commit any offence you 5. Teaching someone to drive get an extra 2 points, after Forget about giving your kids extra lessons to save on driving school fees, it’s not another 3 years without losing legal in Spain. If caught, the owner of the vehicle will be fined. points you get an extra one. 6. Not notifying your new address to the DGT (Spanish Traffic Office) 1. Filling the tank incorrectly Keeping the headlights on, the car running or using your mobile whilst filling up at the petrol station could mean a 200E fine and 3 points off your licence. But did you also know you can’t have your radio/CD/USB on? Remember to switch the music off when you stop the car.

2. Washing / fixing your car in the street

This one is easy to avoid. If you change address just go along to your nearest DGT office (most have an online appointment system) with the following papers: • Proof of address (padrón certificate from the Ayuntamiento). • Driving Licence • Vehicle “ficha técnica” (technical specs document)

7. Throwing things out of the window It’s not just a question of litter, a cigarette stub thrown out of a car window means a 200E fine and 4 points lost due to the high fire risk in most areas in Spain. For other items, such as a can or plastic bottle, it’s an 80E fine.

8. Parking on the beach

Fines ranging from 30E to 3000E, depending where you live, is what you’ll have to pay if you wash your car in the street. Although this prohibition does not apply to your private land (such as a driveway), if you are using the space as a “business” (fixing other people’s cars) you could be fined too.

Depending on the region, this prohibition may also include beach access areas with fines from 90E.

3. No Insurance

10. Not wearing a Hi-Vis jacket

Obvious right? If you have no car insurance and you’re caught not only will you be fined but your car will probably be impounded. But you also need insurance even if you don’t use your car temporarily. This could be the case if you’ve decided to scrap or sell your car but still own it and, as you no longer use it, decide not to renew the policy. In this case the fine could be around 800E.

If your car is involved in an accident, or you have to stop due to a breakdown, any occupant must put on a hi-vis jacket BEFORE getting out of the car. If it’s the driver who gets out without the hi-vis jacket on, he/she will not only be fined 200E but will also get 3 points off their licence.

Tip: Vehicle insurance policies in Spain have a one-month grace period, so if it runs out at the end of one month your vehicle is automatically covered until the 8 THE MARKET PLACE

If you think it’s worth risking for 90E, think twice. In some areas of Almeria the fine is over 30,000E!

9. Eating, drinking or putting make-up on According to the law, whilst driving all these actions are considered to be a distraction and the driver can be fined up to 100E.

Additionally you can be fined 200E if you don’t put out the mandatory reflective triangles. MSS Tips Go to www.moneysaverspain.com and read the old post "Traffic Fines in Spain". Most fines will be reduced by 50% for prompt payment. Watch out for traffic fines in the town where you live. In Spain over half of fines are given out by the local police and the money goes directly to the municipal coffers. We’re not implying that towns do this to have more cash available (wink, wink!), but it’s something to think about.

Feria de San Antonio Frigiliana - 8th to 13th June

Noche de San Juan en Axarquia Every 23rd June (the evening before the feast of San Juan), thousands of locals spend the night at the beach to celebrate the arrival of summer. The tradition is to bring eveything required for a great night on the beach: wood for the fire, good music, food (usually sardines on skewers), something to sit on (although most of the local beaches have events on this night with live music and dancing) and if you are feeling brave a swimsuit to go and bathe in the sea at midnight and make your three wishes. Each town by the seaside celebrates in their own way but there are lots of fires on the beach and fireworks.

The Frigiliana Fair is held in order to honour the Patron Saint, Antonio de Padua. This local fair will feature contests, sports competitions, religious events and bull events. There is an official stand where lots of people join together to watch groups and dancers. On the 13th June the Saint is paraded from the church pulled by bulls to a recreational area by the River Higueron.

cirque du soleil - malaga From 1st to 30th June Recinto Ferial, Malaga. The show called "Totem" comes to Malaga and is about the human species from it's very beginning to it's final wish, which is flying. The Totem characters evolve into a giant turtle, which is the symbol of origin for many old civilizations. There are trapeze acts, native american dancers, ice skaters, russian bars, unicycles and bowls.

Day of the Snail in Rio Gordo Riogordo is one of the AxarquĂa's seven towns that make up the Ruta del Aceite y los Montes (Oil and Mountains Route). The townspeople invite everyone to come and try one of the specialities that characterise the town's cooking: 'caracoles en caldillo' (Snail soup). This unique dish is prepared to a local recipe, cooked in its own juices and served with olives and local wine. Afterwards, the incessant parade of rondallas, groups of choirs and dances, groups of verdiales (countryside music) and bands of music for all tastes begin. The people from Riogordo invite anyone that wishes to come to their town to taste this unique dish, in the setting of this great celebration.

If you’ve got an extra 20,000E there’s no need to read this article... Because you may receive a fine up to this amount, if your personal airconditioning is installed by someone not certified for handling refrigerant gas. It should be done by a company certified for the installation of AIR CONDITIONING and HEAT PUMPS. If you are thinking of installing air conditioning, it is important to know the new law. As a purchaser, you also have obligations and possible fines, so get information on the company and fitters you contract, in order not to break the law. We’ll tell you about it:

Air conditioning: installation only by professionals Last February, the Royal Decree 115/2017 was passed, in order to regulate the sale and handling of equipment containing fluorinated gas, which are not hermetically sealed. This is the case of current air conditioning, refrigeration and heat pumps.

Double certification According to the new law, this equipment can only be installed by professionals certified for handling fluorinated gas and who work for an installation company authorized to install apparatus using this type of gas. This means that double certification is required: • As a professional certified to handle fluorinated gas. • As a company authorized to handle fluorinated gas. The need to have duly trained and certified professionals to handle these systems is mainly because of the highly pollutant elements involved.

Obligations of the seller and purchaser In addition to the requirements imposed on installers, this law 12 THE MARKET PLACE

also establishes obligations for sellers, who handle apparatus with fluorinated gas, although to a lesser extent, and for purchasers: • The seller should inform the purchaser that the installation can only be done by an authorized company. In order to guarantee that this is done, both the seller and the purchaser should sign a document indicating this information (Annex VI, part A) of the RD: • The purchaser should send to the seller within a maximum period of one year, if it is not the same company, Annex VI, part B, signed by him/her and by the installer, who has carried out the

installation, indicating the equipment details and the certificates of the installer and authorized company. • From 1 January 2018, the seller is obliged to inform the competent authorities of their Autonomous Region, of the purchasers who have not provided Annex VI, Part B, by sending a copy of Annex VI, part A. • Non-compliance by the purchaser or seller, could mean a fine of up to e20,000. • On the website of the Ministry of Industry, you can consult the companies that now have fluorinated gas certification.

Local News Local News Local News Local News Plastic carrier bag charges compulsory in Spain

Carrier bags in all shops in Spain will be charged for from July 1 this year, according to a new Bill of Law, or Royal Decree published this weekend. Supermarkets already charge now for plastic bags – normally two cents for the small and more flimsy ones traditionally used for decades, and around 10 cents for larger, sturdier ones – but other retailers, in the main, continue to give them out for free, especially small, family-run stores.

The reason for lower prices for flimsier bags is that these ones break down more quickly and tend to disperse among general waste due to their lower weight, and also because they are cheaper to recycle.

Workmen find human remains under Torrox bridge

For more information telephone, Malaga: 951 040 134.

Last month firefighters had to deal with the remains of a person who died some time ago. The body was discovered by workers and was said to be in an advanced state of decomposition. Firemen were involved in recovering the body due to the area being difficult to access. The body was found under the bridge next to the Barranco Plano roundabout which accesses the A7 motorway and the Torrox Park Urbanisation in Torrox. Police investigations suggest that it could be the body of a homeless person.

Paraglider plunges to death in La Herradura

From July, however, they will no longer be allowed to do so and will have to apply a charge. They are free to set the price they wish, although the government recommends between 5 and 15 cents depending upon their size, thickness and composition. Carrier bags can only be given out free of charge if they are completely necessary for hygiene reasons – such as the small, clear plastic bags provided at fish counters – or for loose products sold by weight, such as fruit. Otherwise, the only carrier bags which do not have to be charged for are the denser ones, of 50 micrograms or more in thickness, made from a minimum of 70% recycled plastic. From January 1, 2020, retailers will no longer be able to give out, without charging for, flimsy, breakable bags or those thicker than 50 micrograms – except where they are made up of a minimum of 50% recycled plastic. And from January 1, 2021, even the very lightest bags, such as the thin, transparent ones used for loose fruit and vegetables, will be required to carry a charge, unless they are made entirely from biodegradable materials. Retailers are required to ensure customers are aware of bag charges before making purchases, normally by displaying prices on signs. Very lightweight bag prices are recommended by the new law to be set at around five cents, or thicker ones at approximately 15 cents or lowered to 10 cents if they are at least 50% made with recycled plastic. 14 THE MARKET PLACE

Local people in La Herradura were saddened when a 50 year old German paraglider died after he hit the sea close to the beach of La Herradura in May. Witnesses at the scene say that he fell into the water and a local diver and another boy with wetsuits on tried to rescue him but when they reached him the man was face down. There was a strong sea storm that day and the paraglider got tangled up with the wet parachute. The victim was recovered from the sea eventually but it took fifteen to twenty people to pull him out. The Guardia Civil are now investigating the accident.

Forest Fire Regulations 2018 With Summer fast approaching, The Ministry of Environment at the Junta de Andalucia have issued their forest fire calendar for this year. From 1st June until 15th October the province of Andalucia is at high risk of forest fires which means it is prohibited to take motor vehicles off road. Within the Sierra de Nerja, Pinarillo and the Fuente el Esparto any type of burning or use of fire is strictly prohibited during the high-risk period. For danger zones outside of forested land, a permit is required from the local authority’s in order to burn waste be-

Great cultural day for White Night in Nerja

Nerja recently celebrated the 7th White Night, with the theme, "Tales and Legends", organised by the Department of Culture in Nerja with the collaboration of ANAC and the Museum of Nerja. There was a varied public programme from 9am in the morning where activities were initiated such as dance, music, readings, awards, projection of short films, parades, children's activities, mural painting, studio shots and exhibits. Thanks were extended to the Local Police, Civil Protection, Operational Services and all those who provided assistance at this popular annual event.

Malaga court rules Town Hall to pay back Plusvalia tax. A court in Malaga has ruled that Velez Malaga Town Hall must pay back nearly 5,000 euros in Plusvalia tax (increased land value tax) to a resident who sold their house in Chilches area in March 2016. Until recently, anyone selling a property in Spain, no matter if it made a profit or loss after sale had to pay the increased land value and not at actual market prices. However, a ruling by the Constitutional Court of Spain in 2017 deemed it unfair that vendors should pay if they did not make a profit. This case is the first of its kind in Malaga and the court did not even look into if the man had made a profit or loss, they suggested that it did not matter even if a profit was made. Similar cases have been to court in Madrid, Catalonia and the Canary Islands but this was the first in Malaga. The judge said that this would pave the way for similar claims against town halls in the province.

ideas to get your terrace in order for summer

Terraces are at the heart of our homes in the summer months, we virtually live on them enjoying the warm weather. Our terrace is where we like to relax in our little haven of peace. That is why with the arrival of summer, it is time to get down to work and start preparing the area to enjoy with family and friends. Check your walls

Check your outdoor furniture

The walls of your outdoor terrace area most likely will need a coat of paint after the winter season of heavy rain we have just had. Make sure you use a specific acrylic paint for outdoor areas, these types of paint have elastic finishes and a high permeability. As for the colour, white always gives more light and makes a space look visually cleaner and larger.

Your furniture that you keep outdoors may have been damaged by the rain and the sun. If your furniture is made of wood or rattan it can be stained or varnished to try and restore it to it’s original condition. For any wooden furniture, wipe it down with a damp cloth and once it is dry you can apply a specific oil for the wood. The result will be worth it. If you have plastic furniture that has been scorched by the sun usually there is little you can do to repair it. If you are buying new this season, consider aluminium as an alternative to wood - it requires virtually no maintenance and is weather resistant.

Keep mould at bay

Green mould appears when water is absorbed by tiles and is retained in the interior cavities of the tiles. This usually happens frequently on terraces that are north facing. You can keep the mould from appearing in the first place by applying special coatings - or tackle it by using vinegar and hot water and rub with a very hard metal brush to remove as much as possible.

Worn floor Your floor may be a little worn and you do not have the time or money to replace it completely with expensive works. Don’t worry, you can still solve the problem by using an easy to lay material, such as composite. A composite floor is made to imitate wood and is simple to fit and gives a great result. Or if you want another easy option, how about artifical grass? Both solutions do not require you to have to remove the existing floor. continued on page 18 16 THE MARKET PLACE

Create an area where you can relax Relaxation is essential on your terrace. If you do not have a lot of furniture you can always invest in a new seating area, with a few very colourful cushions and a low table for drinks and cocktails so you will achieve that chill out zone that you have been dreaming of for a long time. You can choose plastic furniture, wooden, rattan, aluminium or wrought iron for outdoor use. Plastic is the cheapest but just remember that it does get damaged in the sun very quickly.

Good Shade If you already have an area to relax, make sure you think about having a shade of some sort to cover the area. There are many solutions; you could opt for a simple umbrella or how about a sail shade or professionally made awning to fit your specific area? Or if you have the space maybe a gazebo made out of wood or aluminium.

Car News

First Driving Impressions – KIA Stinger, UK Press event, Marlow Stinger... Stinger… great name for a car, conjures all sorts of things in your mind... and if you hadn’t seen one, you can imagine how it looks before you’ve seen it. But is it as good as its name?

T

he Stinger is Kia’s first grandtourer, and first rear-wheel drive car in the UK. The Grand Tourer description may be a bit over the top but it is really a very handsome five-door hatch, and the decision to go rear-wheel drive is a bit of a mystery to me on this type of car. Rear wheel drive is normally reserved for upper-premium cars, and expensive sports cars like Aston Martin, Ferrari and Jaguar, not usually associated with a Korean Hatch. There is a choice of three engines: a 2.0-litre 244bhp T-GDI petrol, 2.2-litre 197bhp CRDi turbodiesel and a rangetopping GT S 3.3-litre 365bhp twinturbo V6 petrol. The GT S has electronic damping and Brembo brakes, and has a 0-60mph time of 4.7 seconds - not the quickest thing, but not bad. Once you have walked around the car a couple of times, taking in its elegant lines, nodding in appreciation of the design and muttering to yourself, you realise just what a great looking car it is, and wonder if it really is a KIA. Then you get inside and see just how 20 THE MARKET PLACE

good the interior is - it equally matches the exterior. Certainly Peter Schreyer (President of Design) and his team have got this one right, it was designed in Europe at the Frankfurt Studios.

Vehicle Stability Management to correct potential skids without any intervention by the driver, which is handy on a rear wheel drive car, especially if the road surface is damp.

The Stinger was first shown in 2011 as the KIA GT Concept. Many people, including me, thought that this was a step too far and a bit too bold for KIA, but they sat on the design and waited until the time was right. So now they feel that the time is right, here it is.

There are three models available: GT-Line, GT-Line S and GT S. All are fully loaded with technology, standard equipment and safety features. This is a really well specified car.

The interior is well laid out, looks real quality, fit and finish is perfect. Somehow, and we have been saying this for years, KIA introduce a new car and the quality is much better than the previous car that was launched. They just improve model after model and the Stinger is no different, it doesn’t break with this tradition. You sit in it and everything just feels right. Everything is in the right place, easy to use and operate, and is comfortable. An 8-inch touchscreen is standard, as is Autonomous Emergency Braking. Also it has Electronic Stability Control linked to

Driving the Stinger on the roads around Marlow and Henley-on-Thames was a pleasure. We didn’t get a chance to test the powerful engines but the car was more than happy to trundle around the country roads and through the small pretty villages. It felt just right, and did attract attention from other drivers, who couldn’t work out what it was. The Stinger is described by KIA as a grand-tourer; and essentially that is what it is. You could travel for many a mile in comfort with a nice, quiet powerful engine under the bonnet. It is well equipped and feels as solid as a rock. Prices in the UK start from £31,995 and go up to £40,495

The Gemstone of

Pearl

Pearls exist in different colours such as white, pink, cream, golden, silver, grey, black, blue and green. Depending of the pearls origin they have different colours: Saltwater pearls in general, come in white, slight cream, silver, grey and golden colours and only those from the South Pacific area such as Tahiti, Fiji, Cook Islands etc. are grey, black, blue and green. Freshwater pearls grow only in white, cream, pink, silver to light grey and very light golden. All other colours sold in the jewellery industry are unnatural and produced through dying of the pearl.

pearls) from freshwater mussels. Pearls are classified as organic gemstones because they are produced by a living organism. In general, pearls require very clean, unpolluted water to be able to grow properly and develop a beautiful lustre of high quality.

What is a natural and a cultured pearl?

Natural pearls grow ‘wild’ in nature. A sand grain or similar natural object finds accidentally it’s way into the oyster/ mussel which starts to cover it with nacre as a defence mechanism against the unwanted intruder. That process is repeated many times with several layers Basically, pearls are classified in 2 resulting in a pearl with a beautiful lustre main categories: Sea pearls (also called which pearls are greatly desired for. Saltwater pearls) from saltwater oysters Natural pearls are mostly of irregular and River pearls (also called Freshwater shape called baroque, drop or keshi as the pearl follows the intruders shape Hardness: and therefore, 2,5 – 4,5 ; out of a scale 1-10 (10 being the hardest) round ones are Pearls are very soft and sensitive and therefore, are easy only very seldom to damage or scratch and need to be handled with great found. But nowadays all our freshwater pearls cultured pearls. are cultivated with farms mainly in Japan and China.

Varieties:

Saltwater pearls: Pearl producing oysters prefer warmer regions and are found both sides of the equator. They can be found in Northern Australia, Indonesia, Japan, Philippines, Burma, India, Sri Lanka, many Islands in the South Pacific (such as Fiji, Cook Islands, Tahiti), Madagascar and the coastline of Central America. In the past the Persian Gulf was the greatest and best region for natural pearls. Nowadays Australia produces one of the best qualities of white and golden pearls and Tahiti has the best black and green pearls mainly due to their excellent water quality.

Cultured pearls grow the same way as natural ones, but in water farms where a bead is carefully implanted into the oyster/mussel. Through the shape of the implanted bead shapes and sizes of the pearls can be influenced, though not completely controlled. The oysters/ mussels are cleaned, get a health check and X-ray to overlook the growth of the pearls every few months, but other from that they are left in the water to continue growing the pearls undisturbed. Saltwater pearls need as long as 5-7 years to fully grow and every oyster can only produce 1 pearl at a time while freshwater pearls grow much faster within 6 months to 1 year and can produce several pearls within the same mussel.

Famous Pearls:

Pearl is one of those wonderful gems of nature, also called “the tears of the sea”, which has been admired and desired throughout history… In England, during the ‘golden age’ large, natural Saltwater pearls were brought to Queen Elisabeth I from faraway countries and found their way into her heart. Even to this day, pearls are still some of the favourite jewels amongst royalty, the world of the famous and gemstone collectors.

in the world with almost 500 years of history. It weighs 55,95 carats (223,8 grains, 11,2 grams) and is perfectly symmetrical formed. An African slave found it at the Island Santa Margarita in the Gulf of Panama in the mid-16th century. The pearl was given to the administrator of the Spanish colony in Panama, Don Pedro de Temez and the slave was rewarded with his freedom. From there the pearl travelled to Spain and was given to the future King of Spain, Phillip II. Phillip gave it to his Queen Mary I of England for their wedding. After her death in 1558, the pearl returned to the Crown jewels of Spain where it remained for another 250 years. The Spanish Queens admired the pearl and it was worn on special occasions by Margaret of Austria, Philip III’s wife, by Elisabeth of France and Mariana of Austria, wives of Phillip IV. Several portraits show those Queens wearing the pearl as pendant. In 1808 the older brother of Napoleon, Joseph Bonaparte, was installed as King of Spain, but only 5 years later he was forced to leave Spain again and took it with him to France. He gave it to his nephew, the future Napoleon III of France. From then on the pearl was given its name “La Peregrina” which means “the Wanderer”. The pearl came to England during his exile where he sold it to the Duke of Abercorn for his wife Louisa, the Duchess of Abercorn. In 1969 they sold it at an auction at Sotheby’s in London and Richard Burton purchased it for

$37,000 as a Valentine’s day gift for his wife Elisabeth Taylor. She commissioned Cartier in 2005 to re-design the necklace with pearls, diamonds and rubies. In December 2011 the pearl was sold on this exquisite necklace for a record price of $11 million. It was auctioned as part of Elizabeth Taylors collection at Christie’s in New York and valued at $3 million, but fast bidding pushed the selling price much higher!

The Hope pearl:

This natural Saltwater pearl is most famous for its shape, colour and size. It weighs 450 carats (1800 grains, 90 grams), is 5,08 cm long and 11,43cm circumferences at the widest part and is of a bizarre drop-like baroque shape with a colour ranging from greenish-gold on the bottom to white on the top. The pearl got its name like the famous blue diamond, from its owner, the banker and gem collector Henry Philip Hope. He acquired this pearl of oriental origin somewhere between 1800-1810 and commissioned it to be set into a pendant capped with a crown on the narrow part of the pearl. After Hope’s death in 1839, the pearl went to one of his 3 nephew’s and has long been in the South Kensington Museum (later Victoria Albert Museum). In 1975 the pearl was purchased by the ambassador of the United Arab Emirates to Great Britain and France for

the

$200,000. Today, the pearl is owned by an anonymous collector who loaned it to the British Museum of Natural History where it can be admired by the public.

The big pink pearl:

This pearl is the largest natural Abalone pearl ever found and is listed in the Guiness book of World Records. This baroque shaped gem weighs 470 carats and is an unusual fine pink in colour. It has been valued in 1991 at US $4.7 million.

The Abernathy pearl:

This is the most famous natural Freshwater pearl, is of round shape, white colour and weighs 44 grains. It is considered the most perfect pearl ever found in the rivers of Scotland and nicknamed “The Little Willie Pearl”. It was discovered in the River Tay in Scotland in 1967 and was named for its finder, the professional diver Bill Abernathy. Because of polluted waters Freshwater pearls of gem quality have not been found in Scotland after the Industrial Revolution which makes this pearl even more special.

Jomon Pearl:

This is only a small natural pearl with a yellowish colour. Though its appearance is not the most desirable, it still is famous as it is believed to be the oldest pearl in history. This pearl is considered to be 5,500 years old!

Easy daytrips from Amsterdam

By Jessica Infantino Trumble

Amsterdam makes a great home base in the Netherlands thanks to its central location, plus the availability of efficient buses and trains open up a ton of possibilities when it comes to daytrips.

Haarlem

I

n fact, first time visitors may feel overwhelmed with the number of options – from the charming city of Haarlem and blue and while ceramic shopping in Delft to the impressive architecture in industrial Rotterdam, beautiful windmills in Kinderdijk, the medieval university city of Utrecht and many more – making it hard to choose which ones to plug into their itinerary. I know I felt this way when planning my own trip, so here are a few daytrip ideas to get you started, all of which depart from Amsterdam’s Centraal Station.

Haarlem Often thought of as a smaller version of Amsterdam, Haarlem has all the same charm – think quaint canals, cobbled streets and a windmill to round things out – but lacks the volume of tourists. Plus the two cities are conveniently close thanks to a speedy train that feels almost as short as a metro ride in between, and some people actually prefer to stay in Haarlem over Amsterdam. For daytrippers, this laid back city is perfect for wandering with a handful of museums, shopping streets and lots of little cafes and restaurants to choose from (we ate lunch at a tea shop with delicious soup and sandwich combos). Other sites include the formerly Catholic-turned-

24 THE MARKET PLACE

reformed Protestant Church of St. Bavo off Grote Markt (Market Square) with its beautiful wood ceilings and an impressive 5,068 pipe organ, and the Corrie ten Boom House, which tells the story of the Ten Boom family who helped hide Jews from Nazis during WWII. Travel time from Amsterdam: 15 minutes via Intercity train to Haarlem’s main train station.

Zaanse Schanse Probably one of my favorite daytrips, Zaanse Schanse is about as Dutch as it gets. This open-air museum is a delightful recreation of a working Dutch village with themed houses and shops, cute barnyard animals and beautifully-preserved windmills, many of which are still in use today. Even though it’s clearly for tourists, I found Zaanse Schanse to be really enjoyable. We learned a lot, shopped a lot and ate a lot, and I loved how many of the sites were hands-on in nature. Travel time from Amsterdam: 40 minutes via Connexxion bus #391 to museum entrance

Edam/Volendam/Marken There are many daytrip options in northern Netherlands and we chose the Waterland trio of Edam, Volendam and Marken. continued on page 26

It was cold and blustery the day we visited, which seemed to have driven locals inside and other tourists away. Nonetheless, it was actually kind of fun to have these small little towns virtually to ourselves. First up was Edam, with its adorable cobbled lanes and canals, picture-perfect houses and a big cheese market on Wednesdays during the summer months. Next we took the bus to the equally adorable harbour town of Volendam, which boasts a carnival-esque waterfront promenade with lots of little shops and eateries as well as a handful of food carts. It would have been even more enjoyable to stroll along the water had the weather not been so bad, although we did find an awning to huddle under to enjoy some poffertjes, mini Dutch pancakes smothered with warm cherries and Nutella, after a delicious lunch overlooking the water. From there you can take the Marken Express ferry to the nearby island fishing village with traditional wooden houses and narrow lanes that are made for exploring (we cut our trip short since the boat ride cost extra and the rain and waves were continuing to intensify). Travel time from Amsterdam: 45 minutes to Edam via EBS bus #312 or #341, 20 minutes from Edam to Volendam via EBS bus #316, 30 minutes from Volendam to Marken via Marken Express ferry (separate ticket), 45 minutes from Marken to Amsterdam via EBS bus #315

Keukenhof If you find yourself in the Netherlands during the spring, then a visit to Keukenhof should be on the top of your list. From the end of March through the middle of May, this park comes to life with a kaleidoscope of more than 7 million bulbs – ranging from crocuses to daffodils and of course tulips! It’s an incredible sight like nothing you’ve seen before, with beautiful flower beds, perfectly manicured lawns and other displays and special events in its pavilions. Even though the weather and blooming season in the Netherlands can vary from year to year, what I like about Keukenhof is that no matter when you visit during its 8-week run, you’re guaranteed to be treated to a colourful show. Plus, after you visit the park there are tons of other flower fields around the area that are worth seeking out – think rows and rows of bulbs in bloom – definitely an unforgettable experience! Travel time from Amsterdam: 45 minutes total via 15 minute train to Schiphol Airport and 30 minute Keukenhof Express bus #858 to park entrance

Fasting for just 24 hours can rejuvenate stem cells

For decades, a low calorie diet has been associated with enhanced longevity, but this new research has shown it's as simple as going a day without food. Stem cells, which work as the powerhouse to maintaining healthy tissue and fighting off disease, lose their ability to regenerate over time due to various factors. However, a new study published in the journal Cell Stem Cell has revealed they can be rejuvenated in 24 hours by fasting. Researchers from Whitehead Institute examined the effects of fasting in mice, and found just 24 hours of calorie restriction turns on a metabolic switch that can boost regeneration of stem cells in the gut. “Fasting has many effects in the intestine, which include boosting regeneration as well as potential uses in any type of ailment that impinges on the intestine, such as infections or cancers,” explained senior author of the study and MIT assistant professor of biologist, Omer Yilmaz. The scientists found that cells began to break down fatty acids instead of glucose in the fasting mice – a process that stimulates the stem cells to become more regenerative “This study provided evidence that fasting induces a metabolic switch in the intestinal stem cells, from utilising carbohydrates to burning fat," Yilmaz explained. 34 THE MARKET PLACE

1. Bone Broth Bone broth contains gelatin and collagen - two superstars for supporting a healthy mucosal lining, proper digestion, and intestinal functioning. Glucosamine in bone broth assists in repairing a leaky gut by combating inflammation and stimulating the growth of new collagen. 2. Coconut Coconut products of all kinds, including oil, cream, and yogurt, are antimicrobial, antifungal, and antiviral, which makes them extremely helpful when dealing with SIBO, yeast overgrowth (such as Candida), and parasites. Medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs) in coconut aid in nutrient absorption and are beneficial for managing gastrointestinal disorders. 3. Peppermint Peppermint, a hybrid of water mint and spearmint, has antispasmodic properties that make it ideal for relieving irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and other GI discomfort. The cooling menthol in peppermint relaxes the intestinal tract, reducing the pain, gas, and constipation associated with IBS just as effectively as prescription antispasmodics.

4. Raspberries Fibre is essential for digestive health including constipation and diverticulosis. Recent studies have also shown the power of dietary fibre to reduce systemic inflammation and support a healthy immune response. 5. Salmon Wild, fatty fish such as salmon are an excellent source of Omega 3s and Vitamin D. Omega-3s reduce inflammation and increase healthy gut bacteria. Research has shown that Omega-3s could play an important role in reversing chronic gutrelated illnesses, including metabolic disorder, obesity, and colorectal cancer. 6. Lemon Lemon is high in vitamin C, an antioxidant that suppresses inflammation, boosts the immune system, and is antimicrobial to support a healthy bacterial balance in your microbiome. Vitamin C also plays a role in the formation of collagen –which is necessary for optimal gut barrier function. 7. Ginger The humble ginger root is an age-old remedy for digestive complaints. Ginger is known for its ability to ease nausea, and can help relieve symptoms associated with IBS, including stomach cramps, gas, bloating, constipation, and diarrhea. 8. Apple Cider Vinegar Apple cider vinegar (or “ACV”) is a natural antimicrobial, and can inhibit the growth of a certain type of bacteria that is high in lipopolysaccharides (LPS), endotoxins that increase intestinal permeability and cause leaky gut. ACV also helps your body create hydrochloric acid (HCL). Use ACV to naturally increase your body’s level of HCL to aid in digestion and nutrient absorption, as well as support a healthy immune response.

Can your eyes get sunburnt ? By now, we’re a pretty sun-savvy bunch. We know we need to avoid smothering ourselves in tanning oil and that we shouldn’t lie outdoors for hours on end in an attempt to bronze up. We’re also aware of the dangers of tanning beds, and we’ve probably all heard about the need to ‘slip, slop, slap’ far too many times to count. But what about the effects of the sun on our eyes? Did Laughing 100 times you know that your eyes can get sunburnt? And it’s a quite common one at that, says eye specialist Professor is equivalent to... Rasik Vajpayee, who says he sees “lots of cases” of this. He explains there are two types of sun damage that can affect the eyes - one is slow and cumulative, while the other is immediate. The immediate type is called photokeratitis and it happens when your eyes are exposed to UV rays from the sun, or from man-made sources (such as welding). Symptoms of photokeratitis can include having sore, red, swollen eyes that may be teary or feel gritty. You may also have reduced vision or blurriness. While photokeratitis is an immediate form of sun damage to your eyes, Dr Vajpayee says you can also get slow, ...15 minutes cumulative damage that can then cause cancer of of exercise on a the surface of the eye, cataracts, pterygium (a fleshy overgrowth that starts in the corner of the eye) and stationary bicycle. macular degeneration.

The Royal British Legion, Nerja Branch This centenary year of the WW1, we should remember ALL those who joined forces with British troops in the war against tyranny. Men from many countries fought alongside UK forces in the bloodiest battle of all times. What started with the assassination in Sarajevo in 1914 ended with signatures on a document in a train carriage brought to a French forest. The intervening years had seen millions killed or maimed for life, and the stage was now set for redrawing the maps of Europe and the Middle East with fateful consequences for the future. We have only to think of the war memorials scattered around the world to realise the impact that war had on everyone then and how fractured the world had become in spite of various proposals for peace. World peace was the dream then, but today it seems extremely unlikely and we must question whether war can ever be justified, but also recognise that any threat to our freedom must be dealt with. The Royal British Legion does not condone war, or glorify it in any way. It was formed to support those men and women and their families who suffered in conflict and although there cannot be any combatants still alive 38 THE MARKET PLACE

from the first World War, subsequent battles have resulted in many victims who still require our help and support. To this end, our branch continues to raise funds by holding our monthly lunches and other events. On the 30th of June we will be holding our Armed Forces day lunch at the Al Andalus hotel. This is a special occasion when we show our gratitude to all those who serve to protect us now, those who did in the past and cadets who will in the future. Our guests will be Major Del Hamilton and WO Mike Wooley, who will bring us up to date with what is happening at the Personnel Recovery Centre in Edinburgh which we support. Our lunches are open to everyone who is interested. I stress again, you do not have to have been in service, British, or of any particular religion, or culture - we would love to see new faces and meet new members. The Armed Forces are usually not given the credit they deserve - UNTIL

WE NEED THEM. Why not come and join us in doing our bit. Our lunches are informal and friendly and we welcome visitors who we realise may only be here for a short time. To book for lunch either at the Al Andalus hotel in Maro, or at Nuevas Arenas in La Herradura, please contact Vera on; Tel: 952 967200 or Email: ozzybaldwin@yahoo.co.uk

Chris & Gabs World Cycling Tour 7 continents and 100,000km

Copyright © 2018 Chris and Gabs World Cycling Tour

Chris and Gabriella are a couple of intrepid cyclists pedalling 100,000km across the 7 continents of the world raising awareness and funding for the charity “Prevent Breast Cancer”. They will be setting off from Wythenshawe Hospital, Manchester on 9th July, finishing some 5 years later in Madagascar... CHRIS AND GABRIELLA Hello, my name is Chris O’Hare. I’m 42 years old. I retired when I was 36! I had previously owned my own business in the construction sector, but decided to get out of the rat race and move to Australia, but then came back… but that’s another story, albeit a great one!! My partner (or should I say my fiance!) Gabriella Gratrix is 45 years old, she previously owned a fancy dress costume shop and also worked as a costumire on cruise ships, but had to give all that up when she met me, “well, how else could we travel!” In her earlier days she was a professional dancer and danced with some famous entertainers! Gabriellas late father (Roy Gratrix) was a professional footballer. Back in the days of Stanley Matthews, he played for Man City and Blackpool. Our home is a cottage in a very small sleepy country village called Thistleton, which is near Preston in Lancashire, but we are now permanently travelling. We currently live in a motor-home (well it’s actually a converted prison van) and 40 THE MARKET PLACE

were recently living and training in the south of Spain.

CANCER DIAGNOSIS 2017 was originally going to be the start of our world cycling tour, flights booked, bikes packed, visas sorted – we were due to fly on the 1st March with no return date. Our tour was to start in Southeast Asia, Vietnam, heading for India, and then onto Nepal, Tibet and Everest, and so on.

said this is the norm with a first scan as they needed something to compare it to, so not to worry. So we were back at the Nightingale on the 15th February 2017, another mammogram, ultra sounds, core biopsy’s… this was starting to get scary!

About a week later we went back to the Nightingale for the results, we sat in that small room with the consultant and he confirmed that Gabriella had DCIS (abnormal cells) in her right breast. We agreed the way forward Due to our friend Pat having cancer at was for a double mastectomy (nonthat time, and because Gabriella’s family reconstructive). March 27th 2017 soon has a high history of cancer, she decided came and Gabriella had surgery at the to make an appointment at St Marys Wythenshawe Hospital. Everything went Hospital to discuss ways of prevention, well and she was out the following day, before our long tour in the March. but we now had to wait a week for the Gabriella was referred to the Nightingale results from the oncologist – that was Centre in Wythenshawe on the 9th the longest week of my life. February for her first mammogram. So its results day, once again at the On the day of the mammogram Nightingale Centre sat in the small room everything seemed fine, no lumps or with the consultant, and more bad news bumps, but she was called back a week – the results show it wasn’t DCIS, but later as they had seen a chalky area on instead 3 cancers that are HER2 (human the scan and needed to do another. They

epidermal growth factor) positive, and one of the 2 lymph nodes removed were infected. She was to have 6 cycles of chemotherapy, 1 year of Herceptin Injections, full lymph node removal and tamoxifen for 10 years, this was never expected by the consultant, nor us! Chemotherapy was finished in August 2017 at the Christie Hospital, then in September Gabriella had all Lymph nodes removed from under her right arm, thankfully this time we had some good news, they came back clear, so out of all 18 nodes removed only the first node that was removed at the time of the double mastectomy had been infected.

THE TRIP Not deterred by any hardships, we once again set our minds to that round the world cycle trip, which will be starting on 9th July. There is no set end date, but it will take at least 5 years. We will be cycling thousands of miles over some of the world’s toughest terrain. Many areas won’t have roads and some mountain passes are almost impassable, even harder given the fact our bikes weigh over 55kg when fully loaded with kit. We will be visiting 67 countries (listed on the right). Gabriella has always been very fit from a child, from being a full time professional dancer to cycling, running, swimming and fitness instructor. In my earlier years I did a lot of boxing, but I have always mainly focused on cycling but also run, trek and take part in classes at the gym. We are both normally extremely fit, as we both cycle long distances most days and also run, swim and do various classes at the gym, like spinning, body pump, body combat etc, but due to Gabriella’s Cancer we weren't been able to do our usual activities, so due to it being winter in the UK we decided to live in Spain so that we were able to work on getting back to full fitness. We lived and trained in Spain over the winter, as it was much easier and more enjoyable being able to train where the sun shines and there is little rain. Our training is slowly drawing to an end, we were recently in Normandy, France, then we head back to the UK, where we will spend the last few weeks of our training in London, Edinburgh and finally the Lake District before our Grand Depart from Manchester on the 9th July. Please follow our progress online as we travel the globe - there is also going to be a wedding at some point throughout our tour!

OUR CHOSEN CHARITY We first heard about Prevent Breast Cancer with Gabriella being referred to the Nightingale Centre, and throughout the whole experience we were given the most amazing support by everyone at the Nightingale Centre and Prevent Breast Cancer, and we want to give something back.

Libra ( 23 September – 22 October )

You’ll be at your strongest if you tame impatience and work on projects that need fine-tuning or completion rather than adding more to your plate. Your partnering needs are metamorphosing during this month. A stronger desire for a soul mate-type bond is with you. Creatively speaking, you are well-received, and your audience is likely to expand. You might recognize the need to concentrate, focus, and specialize now, and this is a period for adding more structure to your life by setting reasonable goals. Money matters are more successful with a partner after the 21st, but you’ll need to take a hard look at spending as well as debts.

Capricorn ( 22 December – 19 January )

A sense of peace regarding work and health routines is with you this month, and your social life tends to take centre stage. You could find that you’re making more concessions than usual and that your agenda takes a back seat to the plans and needs of important people in your life. Some artistic pursuits shall also see a better flow of finances during the course of the month.

Aquarius ( 20 January – 18 February )

It’s an excellent time for finding the information you need, sharing your ideas, advancing your studies or projects, and connecting with helpful people. You’ll see forward movement on your projects and initiatives and delays lifting. This is the time to work on ridding yourself of self-defeating or limiting attitudes. You are easily engrossed by special subjects and projects this month, and eagerly throw yourself into learning and producing.

Pisces ( 19 February – 20 March )

This is a time for recreating your image, starting anew in a significant area of your life, and turning over a new leaf. You are in an excellent position to handle business and financial matters. You don’t enjoy being in limbo, and you’re likely to feel far more in the loop going forward – certainly a happier headspace for you! You are in a rather dramatic phase right now, and your desire to express yourself is powerful.

Six ways to reduce stomach fat Belly fat is not just a problem because it can look bad. In fact, having lots of fat in the abdominal area is strongly linked to diseases like type 2 diabetes and heart disease. For this reason, losing belly fat has massive benefits for your health and can help you live longer. Belly fat is usually estimated by measuring the circumference around your waist. This can easily be done at home with a simple tape measure. Anything above 40 inches (102 cm) in men and 35 inches (88 cm) in women is known as abdominal obesity. If you have a lot of excess fat around your waistline, then you should take some steps to get rid of it even if you're not very heavy overall. Fortunately, there are a few proven strategies that have been shown to target the fat in the belly area more than other areas of the body.

Protein is the most important macronutrient when it comes to losing weight. It has been shown to reduce cravings by 60%, boost metabolism by 80100 calories per day and help you eat up to 441 fewer calories per day. If weight loss is your goal, then adding protein is perhaps the single most effective change you can make to your diet. Not only will it help you lose, it also helps you avoid re-gaining weight if you ever decide to abandon your weight loss efforts. There is also some evidence that protein is particularly effective against belly fat.

3. Cut carbs from your diet 1. Don't eat sugar and avoid sugar- Carb restriction is a very effective way to lose fat. This is supported by numerous sweetened drinks Added sugar is very unhealthy. Studies show that it has uniquely harmful effects on metabolic health. Sugar is half glucose, half fructose, and fructose can only be metabolized by the liver in significant amounts. When you eat a lot of added sugar, the liver gets overloaded with fructose and is forced to turn it into fat. Numerous studies have shown that excess sugar, mostly due to the large amounts of fructose, can lead to increased accumulation of fat in the belly and liver. Some believe that this is the primary mechanism behind sugar's harmful effects on health. It increases belly fat and liver fat, which leads to insulin resistance and a host of metabolic problems. Liquid sugar is even worse in this regard. Liquid calories don't get "registered" by the brain in the same way as solid calories, so when you drink sugar-sweetened beverages, you end up eating more total calories. Studies show that sugarsweetened beverages are linked to a 60% increased risk of obesity in children, for each daily serving. Make a decision to minimize the amount of sugar in your diet, and consider completely eliminating sugary drinks. If you want to cut back on refined sugar, then you must start reading labels. Even foods marketed as health foods can contain huge amounts of sugar.

2. Eating more protein is a great long-term strategy to reduce belly fat 44 THE MARKET PLACE

studies. When people cut carbs, their appetite goes down and they lose weight. Over 20 randomized controlled trials have now shown that low-carb diets lead to 2-3 times more weight loss than low-fat diets. This is true even when the low-carb groups are allowed to eat as much as they want, while the low-fat groups are calorie restricted and hungry. Low-carb diets also lead to quick reductions in water weight, which gives people near instant results. A difference on the scale is often seen within 1-2 days. There are also studies comparing low-carb and low-fat diets, showing that low-carb diets specifically target the fat in the belly, and around the organs and liver. Just avoiding the refined carbs (sugar, candy, white bread, etc) should be sufficient, especially if you keep your protein intake high.

of soluble fibre per day was linked to a 3.7% reduction in the amount of fat in the abdominal cavity. The best way to get more fibre is to eat a lot of plant foods like vegetables and fruit. Legumes are also a good source, as well as some cereals like whole oats.

5. Exercise is very effective at reducing belly fat Exercise is important for various reasons. It is among the best things you can do if you want to live a long, healthy life and avoid disease. Exercise does appear to be effective at reducing belly fat. However, keep in mind that we are not talking about abdominal exercises here. Doing endless amounts of ab exercises will not make you lose fat from the belly. In one study, 6 weeks of training just the abdominal muscles had no measurable effect on waist circumference or the amount of fat in the abdominal cavity. That being said, other types of exercise can be very effective. Aerobic exercise (like walking, running, swimming, etc) has been shown to cause major reductions in belly fat in numerous studies.

6. Track your foods and figure out exactly what and how much you are eating

What you eat is important. However, most people actually don't have a clue what they are really eating. People think they're eating "high protein," "low-carb" or something else, but tend to drastically 4. Eat foods rich in fibre, especially over- or underestimate. For anyone who truly wants to optimize their diet, tracking viscous fibre things for a while is absolutely essential. It doesn't mean you need to weigh and Dietary fibre is mostly indigestible plant matter. It is often claimed that eating plenty measure everything for the rest of your life, but doing it every now and then for a few of fibre can help with weight loss. This days in a row can help you realize where is true, but it's important to keep in mind you need to make changes. that not all fibre is created equal. It seems to be mostly the soluble and viscous If you want to boost your protein intake fibres that have an effect on your weight. to 25-30% of calories, as recommended These are fibres that bind water and form above, just eating more protein rich foods a thick gel that "sits" in the gut. WAGGY TAILS Bella and Lobo are two sibling pups who were abandoned at a house in La Noria (Nerja) when their owners moved back to their home country earlier this spring. Luckily Bella was re-homed with a nice young family from Benalmadena a couple of weeks after they were under Costa Animal Society’s (CAS) care. Unfortunately, Lobo lingered

a few months longer in kennels. At a charity dog show in April, more than one person said his name did not match his personality, (Lobo meaning wolf in Spanish). As he is such a sweet dog, he was re-christened Bobo.

Bobo The name change may have done the trick as Bobo was adopted in May by a lovely couple from Almunecar. They lost one of their dogs last year to illness and their remaining dog, Lola, was feeling lonely. Bobo hit it off straight away with his stepsister and is now settling into his new home. *Oops. As it turns out, we may not have done Lobo/ Bobo any favour. Apparently “Bobo” is Spanish slang for “Dumb Dumb”. Let’s hope he’s not bilingual.

READY FOR ADOPTION Dino is a young five month old, small male pup that was owned by a young Spanish lad who lived with his brother in Nerja. Due to financial

Featured Dogs of the Month: Doris and Dobby Dobby

Doris and Dobby were found by a group of young Swedes who are here for an extended stay in Frigiliana with their two big dogs. This mother and pup duo appeared at their campo holiday home in early April and attempted to make themselves right at home. However the Swedes could not keep them because of their own dogs. When volunteers of the Costa Animal Society (CAS) collected the mother and son, it became immediately clear that Dobby was ill. He was rushed to the vet where he was diagnosed with Parvovirus and quickly placed on an IV drip. He underwent intensive care for a week. Even though he was given less than a 50% chance of survival, Dobby turned out to be a fighter and pulled through.

pressures the lad had to move back to his parents’ home in Barcelona leaving Dino with his older brother. However, the brother works in a restaurant ten hours a day, six days a week and found he did not have enough time in the day to take care of a young pup. Therefore, Dino is now being housed in kennels until a good forever home can be found for him where he will live a long life as part of a family.

CAS CAT CORNER The Costa Animal Society (CAS) also focuses much of its efforts on helping cats that live on the streets, or in the right circumstances, rescuing a friendly feline who has been abandoned. Regularly CAS is called upon to assist street cats which may require veterinary care such as sterilisation, evaluation and medication for infections or illnesses and/or the treatment of wounds. Quite often these calls involve Reunited with his mother Doris, they are currently staying in an isolation kennel until Dobby can be fully vaccinated. We expect that he will be given the all clear in June and they will both will be available for adoption. Needless to say the vet fees and caring for Doris and Dobby as well as other strays takes up the majority of the funds raised by CAS each month. People can help CAS help the animals by volunteering their time or donating funds. To find out more about helping CAS contact Vera at 95 252 9670. Also, if you would like to meet any of these lovely animals please feel free to contact Kurt or Laura at 95 252 1426 or Fiona on the CAS website at www.casnerja. org or on the CAS Facebook page.

a cat who has clearly been abandoned or lost because the feline is friendly towards people and can be handled. A case in point is Rufus who was being fed by a Finnish lady who recently went back home for the summer. She contacted CAS before leaving and a boarding place was organised for Rufus until a foster/forever home can be found. As always, CAS is desperately in need of fosterers for kittens, especially, but not only, those that need bottle-feeding. Also, we do have several adult cats needing homes or foster homes. All of these cats are fully house-trained, neutered, and vaccRufus inated. For more info visit our linked Facebook site: East of Malaga kittens and cats.

CAN YOU HELP CAS? The Costa Animal Society (CAS) is always in need of more volunteer helpers in a number of areas, so if you have spare time to fill, please make contact! In particular, more fundraisers are needed to work with our team. In addition, fosterers are always required to take shortterm care of animals until a permanent home can be found. Even if you are only here for few months a year, CAS would appreciate your help. For a no-obligation chat, contact Vera on 95 252 9670 for general enquiries. Simone on 619 903 815 can answer queries about airport runs in English, German or Spanish. And despite the tough times and uncertainties, money is always needed to cope with the continuous flow of abandoned dogs and cats requiring help from the Costa Animal Society. If you could donate a little to help the animals, CAS would be most grateful. DAISY

SKY DIVE In its most ambitious fundraising event ever, the President of APA Nerja, Laura Leanne Downes and one of its most erstwhile supporters, Paul Nicol, undertook a Sky Dive in Seville on the 29th April 2018. This was a big challenge for them both as they are both scared of heights. Thank you to everyone who donated and supported Laura and Paul. All monies raised will go to the continuing work of rescuing and homing the dogs for their vet bills, food and to repair the Shelter where they find safety and refuge. Thank you.

DUMPED KITTENS

Whilst APA Nerja primarily helps and re-homes dogs, the APA family will always go out of their way to help any abandoned and innocent animal. One of our volunteers was out walking her dog when she heard a little cry and made a horrific discovery. A little kitten, about 10-13 days old, had been put down a hole at the side of the road and someone had put a stone on top on the hole. Once again the APA family sprung into action to help this poor little guy. Many thanks to Ivonne Oliva for giving little Lion (as he’s now named) a loving home. 50 THE MARKET PLACE

Daisy is a castrated Mastin/ Labrador Cross and she is about 9 years old. She was found in the campo around Maro and she was caught because she had a large tumour. APA Nerja paid for the operation to remove her tumour and Daisy now lives in a foster home. Daisy is a big softy. She is a very calm and clever dog. She has previously lived with other dogs. She gets on well with children and patiently allows children to hug and greet her. She is getting used to cats. At first she tried to chase them but after living in a foster home with cats she now understands that they are part of the family too. Daisy is looking for a home where someone is home for most of the day, as she tends to get lonely and barks when she is left alone for long periods of time.

TALK TO THE PAW – JUNE 2018 ALEX’S URGENT SHELTER REPAIRS APPEAL It’s June already, and we’ve come a long way since we started our ‘Rebuilding Project’ back in January! Thank you so much to everyone who has donated to our Shelter Repairs Appeal directly, or supported our

fund-raising events recently. We couldn’t have done any of this without you! We’re almost there …….. we have 18 new pens now – what an incredible achievement! And what a difference it has made to us dogs – and to our lovely walkers, and cleaners. We only have FOUR pens to go, but we don’t have adequate funds to complete them. We have salvaged as much material as we possibly can from the old pens, but our biggest expense will be new gates – at 120 euros each gate! (Some of the old gates were actually old bedsprings!). We need four for the new pens, and a further two for the ‘alleyway’ (“Project Runway” – more about that next month!). Please help sponsor a gate; that would be GREAT!! Thanks everyone, Lots of Love, Alex Ps: Did you hear there’s a big fund-raising, fancy dress party at Fitzgeralds on 16th June? Hope you’ve all got your tickets!!

TAIL TORROX May we assume that after all our strictures concerning registration, innoculation and neutering that your adopted

Timmy, who's owner died just recently, is about 11yrs old

Paula is about 8yrs old and was found abandoned in the campo

dog is now happily settled in your home and all is hunkydory. So should some sort of disaster strike the family, everything is covered and preplanned including the family pets. Well it needs to be as a case that arrived on Tail's doorstep will show. A married German couple, but it could easily be any nationality, had settled on the Costa and over some years had adopted two dogs which they cared for and looked after lovingly. Sadly it turned out that they ceased to care for each other as much as they cared for the dogs. They decided to separate and amicably settled on each taking on one of the pets. One returned to their native country, with their dog, and the other stayed here on the coast. Sad, but so far as the dogs went both animals were still loved. Unfortunately the husband, for it was he who stayed out here, became ill and even after treatment failed to get better. A neighbour looked after the elderly dog for a short while but approached Tail wanting us to take on the dog with the intent of finding another home or foster care. We were able to make contact with the partner in Germany and by the time you read this the family pet will have been flown there to be reunited with the other part of the family. Although this is a happy outcome it could only happen because the dog had been registered with a Pet Passport fully up to date, all documentation in order. However there are many pets where there are no other family members and from time to time we have elderly dogs looking for a home. Please consider taking an elderly dog, they are house trained and do not demand so much time as a small puppy and they do not need so much exercise.

nestles between the Punta de la Mona to the east and the rock of Cerro Gordo to the west. The bay enjoys shelter from west winds creating mostly crystal-clear waters, and is a popular location for water sports & paragliding. There are numerous beach bars and restaurants serving specialities of the region, including tropical salads, fresh fish or paella. The Marina del Este near La Herradura is tucked betwen Punta de la Mona to the west and Cotobro to the east. It boasts a beautiful port, elegantly designed to incorporate select shops, art galleries, bars and restaurants. This small strip of coast also claims to be the best place to dive between Almeria and Gibraltar, and is home to one of the areas leading diving schools.

was once a sleepy fishing village but now the town has a population of over 21,000. The Balcón de Europa is a magnificent promenade that was made famous by King Alfonso XII , who’s statue now takes pride of place at the far end. Close by is the 17th century Church of El Salvador, and the beautiful gardens of Capistrano Playa. There are many beaches to be found either side and in front of the town, including Burriana with its numerous cafés and restaurants. Here too, you can take advantage of the water sports on offer, including water skiing, scuba diving and sailing. Just outside Nerja on the coast road towards Maro is a very impressive aquaduct which used to supply the local sugar factory.

Torre del Mar

is just 30 minutes from Malaga, and is the beach resort of Velez Málaga. Its population of 21,000 grows between June and September to 150,000. The towns attractions have expanded over the last few years to cope with the demand, and now the four kilometres of beach have been enhanced by an impressive promenade, which stretches all the way to Caleta de Vélez, a port providing over 200 berths and offering sailing and water sports. Throughout the summer, there are many Chiringuitos on the beach, serving fresh barbequed fish and ice cold beers. In 2002, Paseo de Larios was pedestrianized, and is now a tranquil promenade, with plenty of pavement cafés and restaurants. At the seafront end of Larios is a line of bars and discos which continue throughout the night on Fridays and Saturdays. The history of Torre is uncertain, but it is thought that it might have been part of an ancient Greek settlement, known as Mainake, which was destroyed by the Carthaginians. Tombs of the Carthaginians were found at the mouth of the river Velez. More recently, it was a small fishing village until major development began in the 1970’s.

Lake Viñuela

is a 15 minute drive from the N340 Autovia, leaving at the junction for Velez Malaga. Head inland along the A356; this direction also leads to numerous inland white villages. The first turning on our map is to Benamocarra, which is sign posted to the right after the last roundabout into Velez Malaga. This road will take you back over the main road and then also on to Iznate, and divides to take you to Almachar, El Borge and Cutar. The second turning off the A356 is on the right (after the Repsol garage) to Trapiche. Continue on the A356, and immediately you will see another junction on the left, sign posted to Benamargosa, Triana, Comares and Cutar. This road will also take you as far as Rio Gordo (for a scenic drive). There is a popular Spanish bar on the corner of this junction called El Cruz. Back on the A356, continue on and you will pass another junction on the right, to Canillas de Aceituno, and finally you will see Lake Vinuela in front of you. Turn right before the lake for Puente de Don Manuel, Alcaucin, Viñuela and Periana; carry straight on for Los Romanes, Rio Gordo and Colmenar.

Frigiliana

encompass 39.74 sq km within which live just over 3,000 people year round. Frigiliana is a popular tourist destination, and because there are many holiday homes here, the population triples during the summer months. The history of Frigiliana dates from prehistoric times. The village has been inhabited by numerous civilisations from the Phoenicians and Romans to the Arabs, who had the greatest impact on the town’s development. During the Christian reconquest, Frigiliana was the site of numerous battles culminating in the famous battle of the Rock of Frigiliana in 1569 which ended in the complete expulsion of the Moorish people. One can learn the history of this struggle by walking through the streets of the historic section where there are a series of twelve ceramic plaques posted about which explain the entire story.
