Pricing is the

to SELLING!

Pricing your property competitively will generate the most activity from buyers and agents. The buying market has a short attention span. Starting too high and dropping the price later misses the excitement of a new listing. Buyers assume there is something wrong with the property or it would have already SOLD. The longer it’s on the Market the more difficult it is to sell.

An overpriced House will not sell!

Open Plan Living The advantages & disadvantages

Open plan living is here to stay and the elimination of walls brings real benefits in terms of distribution and interior mobility. The New York loft apartments from a few years back were responsible for the growing popularity, especially in modern buildings/design. Kitchens that blend with the living room and dining room, bathrooms integrated into the bedroom, dressing rooms that are visible in the room... the possibilities are endless. Given that open plan living offers advantages but also disadvantages, professional advice is essential to successfully complete any interior architecture project linked to the elimination of traditional divisions. Want to know the plus’s and minus’s of this style of house or room? Then read on.

freedom of movement. However, it is increasingly common to find similar solutions. For example, in bedrooms that join the dressing room or the bathroom. The idea of joining rooms on a single surface means optimizing the available space. Something to keep in mind, mainly in many modern houses that often suffer from lack of space.

Attractive

One of the main advantages of open plan living that we need Light to highlight is the aesthetic One of the main attractions of open contribution to design and plan living is that it promotes the interior decoration. In addition to circulation of light between different maximising space, the integration environments. Originality knows no limits. And, with good advice, the results can be incredible However, open plan living can have it’s drawbacks. The main problem which has to be dealt with is the loss of privacy. This does not seem to be an overly relevant issue if we are talking about joining a kitchen and living room. But when the open plan space is applied, for example between a bedroom and a bathroom the issue takes on a new perspective. The key is to think about your personal needs and your individual project and gauge how far you are willing to sacrifice the independence of rooms.

Noises and smells The loss of privacy is one of the biggest concerns when changing to an open plan space especially to rooms as personal as the bedroom. In the case of kitchen and living room, one of the

most obvious disadvantages is the possibility of having to face noises and smells. These drawbacks are the logical consequence of the use of a space for the preparation of food. However,

its effects can always be mitigated by the installation of a powerful extractor hood. Or, even resorting to sliding door systems that hide or connect each of the spaces.

Nerja History Group 2 nights 3 days “Simply Seville”

On Tuesday 23rd January, 30 of us set off by coach for the wonderful City of Seville. We had a breakfast stop en route and then went straight to La Casa de Los Pilatos in the Barrio Santa Cruz. This privately owned Palace has a very interesting history and all the walls on the ground floor are covered in tiles made in Triana, then upstairs are some beautiful frescoes and furnishings. We boarded the bus again for a short journey across the River Guadalquivir to Triana to the ceramics museum. Apart from learning about the process of making tiles and ceramics, there are some fine examples to be seen. We then had free time for a tapas lunch, boarded the bus once more for the drive to our centrally located hotel Hotel Inglaterra for our 2 nights B & B. Having checkedin, we took some time for a bit of R & R before meeting again early evening, for a cocktail on the roof terrace. The views are wonderful - the Cathedral all lit up, other spires and buildings clearly defined. We then walked to a nearby restaurant “La Isla” for a wonderful meal with fine wines and then returned to the hotel for a good nights sleep. After a buffet breakfast, our Guide Marta collected us at the hotel, first of 10 THE MARKET PLACE

all, giving us a potted history of Seville. We then had an excellent walking tour with commentary by Marta, she has a degree in history and is passionate about her city. We walked towards the Cathedral, with Marta giving information about the buildings which we passed. We walked under the amazing structure, the Metropole Parasol, known as Las Setas and then ascended by lift to walk along the structure itself. Once again, amazing views all over the city in different directions. We then had a coffee break and continued to the Casa de Las Duenas, the private palace home of the late Duchess of Alba. It is such a stark contrast to the Casa de Los Pilatos the previous day, which is empty of furniture on the ground floor. This home is packed, each room giving an idea of the Duchess’s interests and tastes - she loved flamenco and there are family photo’s. The gardens are also lovely. We then went to a convent where the nuns sell marmalades and jams and where there is a small museum and highly painted church. One of the nuns made herself available to answer any questions - it seems the they retire at 21.00 and rise at 06.00. She seemed very happy and content with a serenity in her demeanour. After making some purchases, we walked with Marta back to the area near Las Setas once again, where we separated and had a tapas lunch independently. We met up in the evening, for a short walk to another restaurant for dinner. This restaurant is in another former private palace, with original tiles and proved to be another gastronomic delight. Some of us then went to a Flamenco Show in part of yet another private

palace. This show was wonderful - raw and authentic, quite spell binding. We then had a walk back to our hotel for a good nights sleep. On the 3rd morning, after a buffet breakfast, some of us went to the Museum of Bellas Artes to the Murillo Exibition. The building itself is lovely, a former Monastery - One of the Galleries is in the former church, which has a highly painted ceiling and dome. There are some short videos to watch and also the sketches which he would later use for his paintings. Some of the group took themselves off to see other monuments, some a horse and carriage ride then, after lunch, we all met up to board our coach for the journey home. We had been blessed with sunshine during the trip and, when we boarded the coach, it started to rain! We all had a wonderful time. The Nerja History Group is for anyone interested in Spanish History and meets each month between October - April for Presentation Talks on Sp history and trips. Local News Local News Local News Local News Plastic Bags: Free or not in stores? There's much confusion surrounding whether or not you have to pay for plastic bags in stores in Spain. The introduction of a new law means that from the 1st March 2018 all stores including chemists that supply free single use plastic bags must introduce a charge of between 3 and 30 cents per bag. Until now the rule was only applied to supermarkets, although some regions had tried to roll it out to cover other stores. The cost per bag should be based on the material used. Those that are 100% biodegradable should be at the lower end of the charging scale. Bags for goods that are sold by weight will be exempt from the charging scale, e.g. when buying fruit and veg. The aim is that from 1st January 2020, plastic bags and containers that are not 100% biodegradable will not be available for sale import or export.

Nerja makes Trip Advisors "Top Emerging Destinations for 2018" list Two Spanish towns have made it onto Trip Advisor's global list of top destinations for 2018, one being Nerja and the other Cadiz from a list of 44 places. Our very own Nerja, which has lost none of it's traditional charm, is number four in Europe and ninth worldwide, according to the voters on the travel review website. Emerging destinations are worked out using algorithms which measure positive reviews on accommodation, restaurants and general attractions and overall interest in searches and bookings and how far they have increased since the previous year.

British Government commits to deliver a lifelong vote to British Expats The British government in February restated its commitment to end the 15 year time limit on British expats registering as overseas electors. As well as removing a time limit on the right to vote for UK citizens living abroad, the government intends to enfranchise any British expats who was previously resident or registered to vote in the UK. This is part of the government’s wider ambition to strengthen the foundation of democracy and continually increase voter 12 THE MARKET PLACE

registration by ensuring every voter’s voice is heard. Combined, these changes will mean millions of UK citizens overseas will be eligible to register to vote. British expats – under existing laws – have the lowest level of voter registration of any group. The government published the policy statement “A democracy that works for everyone: British citizens overseas” in October 2016 asking for views on its detailed plans to introduce votes for life. It set out how it would scrap the rule that bars British citizens who have lived abroad for more than 15 years from voting in UK Parliamentary Elections, as set out in the government’s manifesto. Minister for the Constitution Chloe Smith said: "Participation in our democracy is a fundamental part of being British, no matter how far you have travelled from the UK. It is right that we should remove the 15-year time limit on voting rights of British citizens living overseas and allow those who previously lived in the UK the chance to participate in our democracy. Expats retain strong links with the United Kingdom: they may have family here, and indeed they may plan to return here in the future. Modern technology and cheaper air travel has transformed the ability of expats to keep in touch with their home country. Following the British people’s decision to leave the EU, we need to strengthen ties with countries around the world and show the UK is an outward-facing nation. Our expat community has an important role to play in helping Britain expand international trade, especially given twothirds of expats live outside the EU."

Murder suspect in La Viñuela had previous conviction for domestic violence

home to their flat which was in the same building as her home. The victim's son told Police Officers that he had seen the boyfriend leaving the property and officers then discovered a blood trail from the house to where his car was parked.

Protest over Sewage Plant Nerja residents have rallied around and turned out in protest at the broken promises that were made about the town's sewage plant. The demonstration took place in the main streets of the town, where they walked to the Fuente del Baden area. Councillors, policitians and residents and local business groups took part but the Partido Popular declined to be included in the rally. A spokesperson confirmed that they believed the demonstration to be nonsence and the municipal triparty council of Nerja to be clumsy and incompetent, having deliberately, intentionally and unjustifiably caused the paralysis of works themselves. Works to the sewage treatment plant remain at stalemate after the main contractor went bankrupt last year but they are 95% complete. Both the Junta de Andalucia and the central government have tried to find a solution but it appears the deadlock continues.

Axarquia possibly left out of AVE rail plans Francisco Delgado Bonilla, opposition Councillor of Velez Malaga has expressed concerns that the AVE train service will not stretch to the Axarquia. He said, "The Costa del Sol doesn't just run from Malaga to Estepona. It goes right the way through El Palo to Nerja as well and we need to demand that the railway be extended to cover the Eastern Coast as well." Other councillors too say that the Eastern Costa del Sol is often abandoned while the West plans projects costing millions of euros.

The suspect who murdered a woman in La Viñuela had already been given a suspended sentence for domestic violence and had been reported previous times by other partners. Glorious Gastronomic Greens Here we look at a few alternatives to the standard green vegetables that you might have bought to stock your fridge. Food trends such as raw food, which promotes a raw-based diet, or clean eating that relies on vegetablebased menus free of additives, have contributed to our fridges filling up with more green leaves than ever before. Yes, what our mothers generation never had, the irresistible recipes of instagram and pinterest (and the conviction that if we eat like Gwyneth Paltrow, we will be just like her). This month we consider a handful of unusual vegetables that you will end up loving just like the next series of Game of Thrones.

Pak Choi Dragon Kale

carotenoids and vitamin C, although its properties vary according to the area and variety.

Pak Choi Are you one of those who do not eat "weird things that come from other parts of the world?" This time you have no excuse: pak choi has been cultivated in Spain for some time now. Although it looks like a distant relative of chard, pak choi is a cruciferos vegetable, so it is closer to brocolli or grelos (which are the tops off the turnip plant) than to the spinach family. It is the protagonist of soft and delicious Asian dishes, a show stopper in soups, and you will be surprised by the contrast between its tender leaves and crispy stems, while in salads it makes an elegant addition.

Dragon Kale

Although there are brave people who eat them simply blanched, they say that fiddlehead or monkey's tail become especially seductive sautĂŠed with a little butter. If so, I also think adding a little garlic and salt would enhance the flavour!

Watercress

Little used in Spain, but much sought after in northern Europe, especially in the form of the leaves for salad. They are the kings of tasty sandwiches and Fiddlehead Fern or Monkeys Tail colourful salads and fascinate children Although not all fern varieties are edible, in the fact that they will grow on a the shoots of the variety Matteuccia simple sheet of kitchen paper. They Struthiopteris are not only, but also just need water and a quiet place have become especially popular in without direct light to develop their Canada. They are the perfect snack: they interesting nutirents of vitamins K, A, C contain twice as many antioxidants as and B9, as well as potassium, calcium, blueberries, they are low in sodium and magnesium, sodium and selenium. they are a great source of fibre, as well It has a slightly spicy flavour that is as vitamins A, C and B. reminiscent of radishes and that brings a fresh and fun touch to practically any dish.

Who would have told the millennials that we would go crazy with the cabbages? If Hollywood helps us recover love for them, their eccentric fashions are more than welcome. There are still those who think that cabbage and kale are the same and, although it would be a great example of how marketing influences our consumption patterns, I am sorry to say that both are varieties of cabbage, but not the same. Within this wonderful green world there are many varieties, perhaps one of the most striking is the dragon kale a variety of kale with an almost bluish green colour, with a rough skin that, perhaps makes it less interesting for salads, but presents a delicate and delicious flavour that surprises in soups, sautĂŠed and stews. What many people say has been an obsession with kale has made us rediscover other cabbages. It must be difficult for our grandmothers to comprehend that we did not want them in soups but that now we cannot do without them in our chlorophyll shakes!!!

Marine Fennel After many years the most modern chefs have finally stopped turning their backs on sea vegetables. With interesting nutritional properties and surprising flavours, these vegetables provide each dish with marine notes without having to resort to species from the animal kingdom.

Watercress 14 THE MARKET PLACE

It is also known as sea parsley and grows on the European and North African coasts to bring a characteristic sparkle to salads, stews or pickles. This sea vegetable is rich in iodine,

Picasso Museum in Malaga Exhibition: Y Fellino Sono con Picasso

Nerja History Group Date: Friday 2nd March at the Cultural Centre in Calle Granada in Nerja, starting time of 11am and finishing at 12:30-1pm.

The Picasso Museum in Malaga presents it's new exhibition "And Fellini Dreamt with Picasso", composed of a selection of drawings, films, photos from the Italian director, as well as paintings, sculptures and drawings of Picasso, material which proves common sensibility and obsessions in both artists. The exhibition can be seen until the 13th May.

For anyone interested in a little Spanish History, the local history group in Nerja put on some fascinating lectures and presentations. This month Sue Harvey will speak about, "Acebuchal : The History of a Local Village - Abandoned and Resurrected" Then the following week on the 9th March there will be a trip up to the village of Acebuchal, with Sue Harvey leading the tour.

Semana Santa - Easter Celebrations in the Axarquia From Palm Sunday 25th March all week until Easter Sunday on the 1st April Don't forget to attend your local Semana Santa festival. Most villages and towns have their own particular celebration but perhaps one of the most impressive is in Velez Malaga, with processions in the streets the whole of the week before Easter Sunday. The focus is on the processsions themselves and with good reason, the huge thrones can weigh 5,000 kilos

and have hundreds of men from each brotherhood carrying them. Each throne tells the story of the week leading up to the death of Christ (holy week) and then the resurrection. Don't worry, it doesn't matter if you are religious or not, the whole experience is very moving. The music can be both sad but also very uplifting, especially with the frequent blasts of trumpets ringing out. We have to just hope that the rain stays away this particular week as the floats do not parade the streets if so. 18 THE MARKET PLACE

Competa Art Walk "Art Walk's" popularity grows each year and a lot of people can't wait for the next edition. Some of the participating artists live in the town, while others come from all around especially to participate in this artistic event. There's a lot on offer to see and experiment! Paintings, drawings, textile art, ceramic, bronze and metal sculptures, carved wood & silver jewellery will be exhibited.

Car News

by Martin Ward

Factfile – Audi A8, UK Press launch, Kettering Every few months, Audi have, what they call their Audi Range Review and Press Drives. A few weeks ago they held the first of the year, near Kettering. They had over 30 cars to drive, with 17 types of models, all clean and ready to go.

A

udi now offer 53 different cars, and this is a far cry from just a handful, just a few years ago. The range has certainly grown, and this is set to get even bigger over the next few months. The Q8 quattro is due later this year, as is the e-tron quattro with full Electric Power, again due on the roads late 2018. But it doesn’t stop there, as Audi will launch 21 new, or facelift models in the next two-years, so after a quiet year or so for the press office it’s all systems go for so many new cars to come to market in a relatively short time. Out of all the cars on offer to drive in Kettering, it was the all-new A8 that attracted my attention. Well, actually the R8 really caught my attention, and I did take a V10 Spyder out for a short test drive - the noise it makes from that splendid engine is superb! But no good if you live on a housing estate and leave early, or get back late, as the roar it makes on start-up and shut-down is way too much to annoy the neighbours! Then again, I guess if you can afford £157,000 for a Super-SuperCar, then you would tend to live away from the earshot of neighbours, and the chances are the neighbours will have a car that will outroar yours anyway. So back to the more sedate, and more comfortable A8. This all-new A8, and A8 L (13 cm Longer wheel base ) is all new, but is instantly recognisable as an A8. Some might say it looks a bit like a big A4, which it does a bit, and there’s nothing wrong with that as the A4 is certainly a handsome car. The A8 has a new Audi Space Frame body shell that improves torsional rigidity 24-percent and contributes to more precise handling and acoustic comfort. 20 THE MARKET PLACE

The cabin is definitely quieter, and an even nicer place to spend a lot of time. The new A8 makes its debut with two extensively reengineered V6 turbo engines: a 3.0 TDI diesel that produces 286ps and 3.0 TFSI petrol that produces 340ps. An eight-cylinder TDI with 435ps will follow slightly later, as will the top of the range W12 6.0-litre. All of these engines operate in conjunction with a Belt Alternator Starter (BAS), which is the nerve centre of the 48-volt electrical system. This Mild Hybrid technology enables the car to coast with the engine switched off, and to re-start smoothly. It also has an extended start/stop function and an energy saving output of up to 12 Kw. The combined effect of these measures is to bring down fuel consumption, and lower C02. But it is not just the engine and the science of fuel saving that the new A8 has on offer. This is the first production car to be developed for conditional automated driving to SAE Level 3. It also has a gradual roll-out of Autonomous Audi parking pilot, garage pilot and traffic jam pilot functions. In other words, the A8 has technology on-board already, that is not yet allowed to be used on our streets, so is sat there in the background, turned off, but available as and when Level 3 is allowed to be used. You could say, Audi are well ahead of the technology game. The Audi A8 oozes quality, just like every other Audi, but the A8 does feel a very special

place to sit, whether you are driving it or lucky enough to be sat in the rear being Chauffeur driven - especially in the A8 L. The standard air-suspension helps ride quality and it rides over the lumps and bumps with ease and comfort. This A8 is full of technology with a new improved Virtual Cockpit, LED headlights with High Beam assist and LED rear lights. It has quattro permanent all-wheel drive and to help in wet conditions and will certainly get you out of trouble if the weather turns nasty. Safety has not been forgotten either; the list of standard equipment to keep you safe is endless and it would be virtually impossible, with all the systems, to hit anything else. The problem is other drivers out there, your car is almost invincible but its everyone else you have to worry about. Prices for this very elegant, good looking, efficient, safe and comfortable saloon, that is so luxurious start from £69,100, and go up to £74,995, but these prices will vary, as new models, and engines are introduced.

George Orwell: Life with my father Tuesday March 27th The Cultural Centre (Casa Cultura) Calle Granada, Nerja. 6pm (Doors open at 5pm and tickets only available on the night) Visitors are most welcome. Entrance E10 (Members of other The Arts Societies E5) A full illustrated lecture in English by Richard Blair Sponsored by Ole Optica “I will be working through his life and the salient points from childhood, school, Burma, tramping in London and Paris, his visit to Wigan and his time in the Spanish Civil War, his writings (novels and travelogues) illness. BBC, his huge out put of essays and articles, writing his last 2 novels, my life with him in London and on the Island of Jura and finally his death. I intersperse this with random readings from some of his more significant essays and poems. “ “ The subtitle is the title of the exhibition that is ongoing until the 25th June (Orwell’s birthday) in Huesca and if anybody has a mind to, it is more than well worth going to. The title is a quotation taken from Homage to Catalonia. “

About Richard Blair

Perhaps Andy Warhol was right when he said everyone was reading the same comics. While British Pop art was heavily influenced by the consumer boom and the films and music of the USA, it had its own identity, which was often ironic and self-reflective. American Pop art had the superstars including Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein, who simply used the formats of advertising, mass production, Warhol magazines and comics, to play back to the public what the public was already eating, watching or thinking. This lecture will use a collection of Pop art paintings to explain the differences between British and American Pop art, and why some British artists, after trying it, distanced themselves from it. This lecture will be jargon-free with audience engagement, backed by high quality slides.

About Ray Warburton Ray Warburton studied art history at the Open University and the University of Buckingham. he is a Guide at Tate Britain and Tate Modern, who leads public tours of all the permanent displays and also undertakes exhibition tours. He is an experienced public speaker who has given presentations and lectures on a range of themes to diverse audiences over many years. 22 THE MARKET PLACE

The last years of Orwell’s life are generally thought to have been heroically grim: the privations of World War II in London, his wife Eileen’s early death on the operating table, the shortages of the post-war years, his self-exile from London to the cold isolation of a primitive farmhouse on the Isle of Jura off the Scottish coast, the dogged composition of his nightmare masterpiece “1984,” much of it while he was bedridden with T.B., the final agony of his illness in a series of sanitoria, death in 1950 at forty-six years old. No wonder he acquired the posthumous title of St. George. Most Orwell readers know that he and Eileen adopted a son, Richard. And that’s about all they know of Richard Blair (George Orwell was the pseudonym of Eric Blair), who has kept his silence throughout his life - until now. So who is Orwell’s son? A retired engineer, who lives in a picturesque village in Warwickshire, and who has entirely happy memories of having spent his first six years in the company of the author of “Homage to Catalonia” and “Animal Farm.” Orwell, by his son’s account, was a wonderful father. He gave Richard his devoted if rather rugged attention, and a degree of freedom that readers of contemporary parenting books would consider actionable. A small boy’s life with the great and dying writer was an endless adventure in the wonders and rigors of the natural world around their country house, even if most of the shared experiences Richard still remembers were of near-disasters. One fishing expedition to a shepherd’s hut on the remote part of Jura ended in a storm, with Orwell, Richard, and his three cousins nearly drowning in the Gulf of Corryvreckan. Orwell, struggling in the whirlpool that had capsized their boat, noticed a seal watching them and remarked, “Curious thing about seals, very inquisitive creatures.” That’s the voice that described crawling through a coal mine in northern England and taking a bullet in the throat in Spain: detached, a bit austere, but alert and alive to the world. No one ever accused Orwell of being sentimental. In fact, he has a reputation for personal reserve, even coldness, and one feminist critic based a whole book on the premise that Orwell’s pessimistic vision was a product of misogyny and male dominance.

March Film & Tapas Evening at FTK The latest offering in the popular Film & Tapa evenings at FTK in Nerja will be screened at 7.30pm on Friday 9th March at FTK’s premises in Pasaje San Miguel (around the corner from the main Mercadona.) One of the most powerful films of 2016, Caged No More was inspired by real events, and is the story of Aggie Prejean, a grandmother on a desperate search to find her two granddaughters, Skye and Elle, who have been kidnapped by their sinister father. As the details behind the girls’ disappearance begin to unravel, it’s discovered he has taken them overseas to be sold into slavery to settle his drug debt. Aggie enlists the help of the girls’ uncle, a well-respected local philanthropist, and his son Wil, who is a former Special Forces agent. A global hunt ensues, and the team will stop at nothing to see the girls safely returned home. Rather than being a pleasant entertainment this film is an important 24 THE MARKET PLACE

challenge to us all and is a taut action drama meant to engage and educate audiences on the realities of human trafficking. Human slavery - even in the West - has never before been happening on such a massive scale and is a reality we must not ignore for the sake of the millions of mostly women and children whose lives are set at nought by their captors. This is a must-see movie for anyone that cares about humanity - you won’t regret watching it - but it just might inspire you to help change the lives of those who quite literally are caged. THE MARKET PLACE 25

The Royal British Legion, Nerja Branch This year, being our 30th anniversary we are hoping to have a bumper one, but like many other organisations we are suffering from falling numbers. Why is this? Well some of our staunch members in the past have returned to live in UK, some are finding it more difficult to get about, others may find it difficult to get to our lunches due to transport difficulties etc.etc.. and then there are all the usual reasons e.g. other plans, visitors and so on. We have also lost a faithful and regular member who was well known in Nerja, Kate Stewart, who died recently and unexpectedly. Kate, many will know was partly the founder of Market Place Magazine and recognised as a great party thrower. Like many others she will be missed by everyone.

These factors are all indicative of the aging membership and reinforces the need for us to attract new and enthusiastic people. The necessity for us to raise funds remains the same, the number of veterans who require help and support has not diminished and will not for the foreseeable future. We must never forget that were it not for them we would not have known the freedom and standard of living that we have so enjoyed over the last few years. So, if you, my reader, have an interest in the work we do or just want to know about the Legion, please come along and

meet us. We may have a serious aim, and contribute very generously to the Poppy Appeal, but we have very friendly lunches, and hold other events to which everyone is welcome. Our first event this year apart from lunches will be a concert by the Coraxalia choir. It will be at the Caves Restaurant in Maro. The programme will be a compilation of popular classical music. The date is Saturday 21st April, at 8pm. So, if you like live music please put this date in your diary and join us for what we hope will be a wonderful evening. Mens Pairs competition, 14th February

The Annual Sharrocks Trophy competition took place on Monday, 29th January at Torrox Park

This year we had a league of eight teams. We had an excellentday with the sun shining from the start. Certainly a lot better than last year where everyone was frozen. Well done to everyone who took part in a close contest, with three teams being in the running on the last round of games. The winners were Jim Whitworth and Nigel Locke, who won by having more shots for than the runners up who were Phil Gardner and Dave Osman, both teams finishing on ten points.

Ladies Pairs competition, 31st January This year we had a league of five teams. The day started a bit chilly with the wind causing a little impact on the bowling, and also reduced the ambient temperature somewhat! An enjoyable day nonetheless, with excellent bowling all round. The overall winners were Marion Talbot and Pauline Trippas, who wrapped up the win with one round to spare. Top photo: Dave Trippas presenting the Trophy to Jim Whitworth and Nigel Locke Bottom photo: Dave Trippas presenting the Trophy to Pauline Trippas and Marion Talbot 26 THE MARKET PLACE

The competition was won by Fred Bambynek and Delia Rathmell with 3 wins and +20 points. There was a tie break for the runners up between Alain Marty and Sue Cole against David MacKenzie and Eric Donaldson, both with 3 wins and +11 points. That resulted in David and Eric winning the runners up trophies. The trophy is played every year in memory of Norman Sharrocks, who started and ran our Tuesday group. 28 THE MARKET PLACE

Libra ( 23 September – 22 October )

You gain what you want through diplomacy or charm and by enlisting the support of your friends, rather than by being forthright and bold. You are moving away from false paths and relationships that no longer serve you well, or transforming the same into more suitable ones. Relationships begun now are: emotionally charged, domestic, potentially long-lasting, somewhat private–they run deep.

Scorpio ( 23 October – 21 November )

Your income might increase, and there may be an opportunity to improve your future financial situation. You are likely to see and enjoy benefits to your earning power and value system. You are likely to feel more confident and enthusiastic about your ability to earn a living, Sharing and comparing your spiritual, religious, or philosophical interests with a friend or loved one may open up a whole new dimension of your relationship.

Sagittarius ( 22 November -21 December )

Your efforts shall be giving tangible results in this month. You may decide precisely what is to be done for some betterment in your professional field and plunge into action. This is a time when you need to define, understand, and crystallize your significant relationships with others. This is a time when any issues surrounding compromise, flexibility, and the ability to give your heart to your partner will surface.

Capricorn ( 22 December – 19 January ) You have a strong interest in broadening your mental experiences in general, and finding expression of your personality through them, perhaps through higher education or exploring different philosophies of life. This is not a time to push yourself or to be involved in activities that require intense competition or a great expenditure of energy. Cooperative, harmonious personal and professional relationships are more important to you at this time.

Aquarius ( 20 January – 18 February )

It’s a good time for analyzing how to better approach achieving your goals, both personally and professionally. A strong need for harmony, affection, approval or belongingness colors your attitude and decisions now. The relationship begun now is likely to be sentimental, and perhaps somewhat insular. This is a time when you really enjoy life, appreciating the good things and rarely harping on the more inconvenient or annoying elements of life.

Pisces ( 19 February – 20 March )

You may be hesitant about taking professional action, second-guessing your instincts or your natural impulses rather than acting upon them. Meeting with obstacles in your path, can force you into the position of using all of your resources to fight back, and you can discover resources you never knew you had in the process! You could have problems staying calm, cool, and collected at times. Buried resentments come to the fore and demand to be dealt with.

Health, Body & Soul Love your life more with advice on how to lead a healthy lifestyle

Moderate drinking can help cleanse the brain, study finds It turns out that your favourite drop might help ‘cleanse’ your brain, according to new research hailing from the University of Rochester Medical Centre in New York, recently published in the Scientific Reports journal.

Standing for six hours per day can help you lose weight

Simply swapping sitting down for six hours of standing can help you lose weight. Researchers from the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, carried out the first systematic review of existing studies that have previously examined the difference in calories burned between sitting down and standing up. The scientists examined 46 studies, which amounted to 1,184 participants who were aged 33 years old and weighed 65 kilograms, on average. The study found that standing burned 0.15 calories more per minute when compared to sitting, meaning if an adult weighing 65 kilograms stood for six hours every day, they would burn 54 calories more than if they sat for the same amount of time. This amounts to losing 2.5 kilograms over one year, and 10 kilograms over the course of four years. The study’s lead author, Dr. LopezJimenez, explained how a simple change can have huge benefits for our overall health.“Standing for long periods of time for many adults may seem unmanageable, especially those who have desk jobs, but, for the person who sits for 12 hours a day, cutting sitting time in half would give great benefits. “The idea is to work into our daily routines some lower-impact activities that can improve our long-term health.” In addition to an increased risk of developing heart disease, diabetes, obesity, back ache and dementia, sitting for more than four hours each day can lead to: Disrupted blood sugar levels Increased insulin and blood pressure levels, Leg muscles switch off, Reduced metabolic rate, Prevention of enzymes responsible for burning harmful blood fats shutting down. 34 THE MARKET PLACE

Lead by Dr Maiken Nedergaard, the mouse study found that “drinking the equivalent of around 2.5 alcoholic drinks per day could reduce brain inflammation,” as alcohol might boost the glymphatic system, which is “responsible for removing waste products from the brain.” To reach this conclusion, a group of mice that consumed the equivalent of 2.5 alcoholic beverages a day showed improved glymphatic function over a period of time than their counterparts who weren’t

exposed to alcohol, and those who consumed too much. It’s important – perhaps more so – to note, though, that the research found excessive drinking (so, anything over the equivalent 2.5 drinks daily) had a profoundly detrimental – and severe – effect on the subjects’ brains. High alcohol intake impaired the aforementioned system, and thus weakened the glympathic function, increasing inflammation in the brain. Higher alcohol consumption also damaged the mice’s cognitive function and motor skills. "The data on the effects of alcohol on the glymphatic system seemingly matches the J-shaped model relating to the dose effects of alcohol on general health and mortality, whereby low doses of alcohol are beneficial, while excessive consumption is detrimental to overall health," commented Dr Maiken Nedergaard on the findings of his research, so before you say 'cheers' to your daily wine-with-dinner, it's imperative to consider the whole picture.

Ketogenic Diet can slow ageing, study suggests New research from the Gladstone Institute for Virology and Immunology in San Francisco, suggests that the Ketogenic Diet could slow down the ageing process. The diet, which is based on a low-carb, high-fat eating plan, shot to popularity in 2017. But new data suggests that, beyond these capabilities, the diet may prevent age-related conditions, such as heart disease, Alzheimer's and even cancer. The reason why is because the diet – as its name suggests – puts the body in a state of ketosis (or starvation) which triggers the release of chemical hydroxybutyrate, which protects cells from internal stress. Internal stress, the research finds, is linked to a certain type of genetic cell damage that causes ageing, and a host of other adverse health conditions. Dr Katerina Akassoglou, who helmed the study said, “the findings could be relevant for a wide range of neurological conditions, such as Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, autism and traumatic brain injury. [These] diseases afflict millions and there are few treatment options.” To reach this conclusion, Dr Akassoglou and her team limited how many

calories mice consumed in order to trigger a rise in their hydroxybutyrate levels, simultaneously blocking the effects of the enzyme histone deacetylases (HDACs). This activated certain genes, which protected cells from internal stress. According to The Daily Mail, the study’s coauthor Dr Eric Verdin said, “over the years, studies have found that restricting calories slows aging and increases longevity, however, the mechanism of this effect has remained elusive. Here, we find that hydroxybutyrate, the body's major source of energy during exercise or fasting, blocks a class of enzymes that would otherwise promote stress, thus protecting cells from aging.”

The Gemstone of March

Aquamarine

by Alex of Gabriela Jewellers, Nerja

Colour:

Aquamarine captures the fascinating blue colour of the oceans from near colourless to sky blue and blue-green. It exists from translucent to transparent and the blue colour is caused by traces of Iron in the gemstones chemical composition. High quality gems with rich blue colour and only small inclusions, not visible to the naked eye are very valuable.

Famous Aquamarines:

Probably the most famous and world’s largest cut Aquamarine is called Dom Pedro (pictured left). It is a loose gemstone of 10,363 carats, standing 14 inches tall, weighing an incredible 26 kgs. It was mined in a town called Pedra Azul, Brazil and was cut in IdarOberstein, Germany in 1992 by the amazing lapidary and designer Bernd Munsteiner. It is displayed in the Smithsonian museums in America.

Queen Elizabeth’s Aquamarine Necklace and pendant earrings.

She received this stunning set from the president of Brazil in 1953 as a coronation gift. Because she loved these jewels so much, she commissioned a London jeweller to create a matching tiara in 1957. The famous Kokoshnik Tiara belongs to the Swedish Royal family and is owned by Princess Margaretha. She wore it at the wedding of her niece, Crown Princess Victoria in 2010.

Gemstone Family: Aquamarine is one of the well-known varieties of the Berylfamily. It is related to Emerald (bright green), Morganite (pink), Bixbite (red), Heliodor (yellow-green), Goshenite (colourless), golden and green Beryl (pastel green).

Hardness:

7.5; out of a scale 1-10 (10 being the hardest)

Origin:

The most important deposits are in Brazil, Pakistan (Himalayas), Afghanistan, India, Sri Lanka, Zambia, Malawi and Mozambique. It is also found in Madagascar, Zimbabwe, Russia, USA and Australia.

Healing properties: During the middle ages, people believed Aquamarine protected couples in love and functioned as an antidote for poison. Later on it was believed Aquamarine prevented sea sickness and protected sailors in stormy seas. Today, it’s said that Aquamarine supports endurance and perseverance. It gives foresight in all activities and therefore, helps to recognize new ways and opportunities. Aquamarine builds determination and supports mental and physical growth. Physically, Aquamarine regulates the hormones, the function of the immune system and decreases all body overreactions such as allergies, especially hay fever. And it strengthens the sight as well.

Exploring the Gut-Brain Axis If you’ve ever felt the sensation of 'butterflies' in your stomach or had a 'gut feeling' about a situation, you’ve experienced the connection of the brain and the gut. This two-way communication between the nervous system and digestive tract goes beyond emotional response; it has been implicated in numerous health conditions. Interventions involving the gut-brain axis are seen as potential new strategies for addressing a multitude of issues. The gut-brain axis is a topic of interest in fields from neurology and gastroenterology to psychology and integrative and functional medicine. While most available evidence on the gut-brain axis comes from animal studies, emerging human research is providing valuable insights into the complex integration of psychology and physiology of the human body. The gut is a busy place. Not only does it house the influential microbiome, it also includes immune cells, neuropeptides, microbial metabolites and enteroendocrine cells, which secrete hormones. The vagus nerve is a key connection point linking the brain and gut, while nerves along the gut allow for direct communication with contents of the stomach and intestine. The digestive tract is one of the major entry points for external substances, from food and supplements to drugs and bacteria. These substances all have the potential to impact the gut-brain axis.

permeability may be associated with numerous conditions including inflammatory bowel disease and autoimmune disorders such as Type 1 diabetes and celiac disease. Consuming adequate amounts of vitamins A and D, with plentiful dietary fibre, prebiotics and probiotics to keep the gut microbiota healthy, can maintain and improve the integrity of the gut. It also is becoming clear that the microbiome can influence its host’s appetite and eating behaviour. Animal and human research has found a link between specific species of microbes and increased host intake of nutrients that the microbes prefer. Cravings and feelings of hunger we experience may not be just our own. The metabolites microbes produce and the neurochemicals they influence impact secretion of satiety-promoting hormones; researchers suspect the microbiome also can influence taste, smell, thoughts, impulsivity and compulsivity about food. Short-chain fatty acids, a major metabolite of gut microbes, and their possible link to obesity and metabolic syndrome are an active area of research. In fact, administering the shortchain fatty acid proprionate to the colon of adults who are overweight led to greater satiety hormone release and reduced calorie intake and weight gain.

Disrupting the gut-brain axis already is used as a treatment for obesity through Rouxen-Y gastric bypass surgery, a restrictive and malabsorptive intervention that in 2015 Intestinal permeability refers accounted for an estimated 23 percent of to the physical gaps between bariatric surgeries. This surgery is unique intestinal cells, which is thought compared to purely gastric restrictive to be partly regulated by the bariatric surgeries, because part of the microbiome. The term “leaky stomach is stapled off and attached to the gut” was coined to describe when middle part of the small intestine, bypassing those gaps are enlarged and the lower portion of the stomach and parts of external substances and waste the small intestine. This may affect not only products are allowed to pass the absorption of certain micronutrients, but into the bloodstream. This has also hunger and satiety hormones. been associated with changes People who undergo gastric bypass surgery in mood, immune function tend not to experience the same increase and inflammation. Intestinal 44 THE MARKET PLACE

in the hunger hormone ghrelin as people who achieve non-surgical weight loss through diet and exercise alone. Bariatric experts suspect this is a major contributor to the success of the surgery. In addition, sometimes the vagus nerve is severed during gastric bypass surgery, which could affect hunger hormones and innervation of the gut, therefore impacting appetite. When the body is underfed, such as with bariatric surgery recovery and anorexia nervosa, gut microbiota composition and diversity changes. This has been correlated with depression and anxiety in people with anorexia nervosa and may be related to the fact that 95 percent of the neurotransmitter serotonin, which plays a role in depression, is produced in the gut. Research is examining what happens when fecal samples from people with anorexia nervosa are transplanted into mice born in a germ-free environment, compared to what happens when fecal samples from healthy people are transplanted into germ-free mice. This science serves as a foundation for potential new treatments for anorexia nervosa as well as furthering the understanding of the underlying mechanisms of this complex disease. There is not enough evidence to explain the role of the gut-brain axis in bingeeating disorder, although some researchers suspect the gut microbiome’s impact on impulsivity and compulsivity may play a role. While research on the gut microbiome is booming, human research is needed on other parts of the gut-brain axis, especially as it pertains to risk and development of psychological and chronic disease. As more human evidence becomes available, novel intervention strategies involving food and nutrition likely will come to light. Healthy, gut microbiome-friendly recipe

How to Make Sauerkraut Sauerkraut is German for Sour Cabbage. It is a great side dish for rich meat or try it as a sandwich filling, but more importantly this amazing dish is a fermented food which keeps our gut microbiomes healthy. For success make sure to stick to the method.

INGREDIENTS:

1.5kg Cabbages, white or savoy & 50g Salt

PREPARATION: 1) Discard the coarse outer leaves and stalk from the cabbage. Slice very thinly, rinse thoroughly in cold water and drain well. 2) Put the cabbage and salt into a very large non-reactive bowl and thoroughly massage the salt through the cabbage with clean hands. 3) Cover and reserve for 1 hour so that the salt draws the liquid out of the cabbage. 4) Pack tightly into a very large sterilised jar (or several smaller ones) or other non-reactive container and be careful to pour all the liquid over the top. The container needs to be big enough so there is room at the top to weight down the cabbage and for all the liquid produced to cover it.

It is very important the cabbage stays under the liquid at all times. 7) Cover with a piece of clean cotton cloth and a rubber band so the carbon dioxide can escape but no dust or dirt can get in. 8) Over the next two days, uncover and push down frequently on the cabbage to compress it as much as possible and release more liquid. Recover the container with the cloth after each push-down. 9) Leave for 2 to 6 weeks in a dark place at between 18-24C. After about 14 days the sauerkraut can be moved somewhere with a colder temperature, 6-10C. It will be fully fermented in 4-6 weeks. Mine was ready to eat in three weeks and although still a little raw it tasted delicious.

5) Push the cabbage down very tightly with a sterilised wooden spoon so the liquid covers the cabbage.

10) Small bubbles will appear as the mixture ferments but if any scum or mould appears, scoop it out immediately with a clean spoon. If you see scum or mould, smell the sauerkraut — funnily enough it should smell sweetly like sauerkraut. If not, (if it smells the least bit sulphurous) you will need to start the process again with new ingredients.

6) Cover with a sterilised small plate that fits over the surface of the cabbage and add a weight on the plate to hold the cabbage under the liquid (a sterilised jam jar filled with water works well).

11) Once done, discard the cloth, cover with an airtight sterilised lid and store in the fridge in its fermentation container. It will last about 2-3 months.

HAPPY TAILS

While the urgent care of animals in peril is an obvious priority, equally important is an understanding of the causes of animal abuse, and to address the measures necessary for its prevention. In the latter case, the laws are on the books so all that is needed is to keep beating on the town halls’ doors demanding their implementation. An example of this occurred in a march in Málaga 4 February 2018 protesting the horrific abuse of dogs at the hands and hooks of hunters. The Costa Animal Society (CAS) was present in solidarity with over ten different animal rescue organizations. The beginning of February means the end of the hunting season with grotesque consequences for thousands of these noble, lovely, timid Galgos, Spanish Greyhounds. This is not the place to describe the horrors visited on them, but if you are interested in understanding this travesty, Google up “Galgo abuse in Spain” or visit our comrades at www. galgofreedom.com.

“PERRERAS MATAN/PROTECTORAS SALVAN” (POUNDS KILL/SHELTERS SAVE) - RINCÓN DE LA VICTORIA, 20 JANUARY 2018 Costa Animal Society (CAS) members also took part in a demonstration protesting the barbaric atrocities committed at the perreras. The perreras are not, as they would like you to believe, animal shelters but killing stations run for profit. Animals brought to the perreras, generally by the police, have to be destroyed after ten days if no one claims them. (The perreras generally do nothing to facilitate this.) If this is your business, it’s not hard to imagine that expenses such as decent food, medical treatment, clean, comfortable kennels, etc. are cut down to the bare minimum to maximise profits. If it’s money you’re after, this leads to a riot of the imagination. Here is but one example of a shrewd cost-cutting measure: When it comes time to destroy the animal, why waste money on anaesthetics, needles, medicine, a veterinarian, when you could just put the animal in a deep freezer to slowly freeze to death at virtually no expense? The woman who perpetrated this “procedure” was actually charged and jailed. However the charge of animal cruelty was a small part of her sentence. The much more important crime according to the judge was that the public money she received to carry out some sort of reasonable destruction of the animals, she 48 THE MARKET PLACE

TAIL TORROX Although, as we have mentioned previously, we keep details of all the dogs that pass through the Tail Refuge, in Torrox, and with whom they are adopted into loving homes, we don't have a running total. However during the month of february – a short month, remember – Tail feels that we must have created a record for sending dogs to loving homes having placed 32. This number includes to local homes and elsewhere in Spain, to Switzerland, Finland, the UK, Holland and by far the greatest number to Germany.

Fuchsia in her coat just having arrived in the UK.

Tail achieves this through keeping an up-to-date listing with photographs on it's website (TailTorrox.es) from which individuals may show an interest and contact the charity, but also they send the same detailed information to Tail's associated charities with whom they cooperate abroad. Presently this includes four in Germany, three each in Switzerland and the UK and one in Finland and one in Holland although Tail has just made an approach to another Dutch charity. Sometimes local Spaniards get quite upset when hearing that dogs are being sent abroad but when you explain that the numbers just cannot be accommodated locally and ask why puppies are thrown into rubbish bins and why don't they have their dogs sterilised and the benefits of that and make them understand the difference between a Perera and a Protectora, they usually comprehend the reasoning. It may be a surprise but donations to Tail from Spaniards are as great as from most other nationalities.

Date for your diary : Tail's 7th Spring Dog Show will be on 14th April.

THE MARKET PLACE 51

La Herradura

nestles between the Punta de la Mona to the east and the rock of Cerro Gordo to the west. The bay enjoys shelter from west winds creating mostly crystal-clear waters, and is a popular location for water sports & paragliding. There are numerous beach bars and restaurants serving specialities of the region, including tropical salads, fresh fish or paella. The Marina del Este near La Herradura is tucked betwen Punta de la Mona to the west and Cotobro to the east. It boasts a beautiful port, elegantly designed to incorporate select shops, art galleries, bars and restaurants. This small strip of coast also claims to be the best place to dive between Almeria and Gibraltar, and is home to one of the areas leading diving schools.

Nerja

was once a sleepy fishing village but now the town has a population of over 21,000. The Balcón de Europa is a magnificent promenade that was made famous by King Alfonso XII , who’s statue now takes pride of place at the far end. Close by is the 17th century Church of El Salvador, and the beautiful gardens of Capistrano Playa. There are many beaches to be found either side and in front of the town, including Burriana with its numerous cafés and restaurants. Here too, you can take advantage of the water sports on offer, including water skiing, scuba diving and sailing. Just outside Nerja on the coast road towards Maro is a very impressive aquaduct which used to supply the local sugar factory.

Torre del Mar

is just 30 minutes from Malaga, and is the beach resort of Velez Málaga. Its population of 21,000 grows between June and September to 150,000. The towns attractions have expanded over the last few years to cope with the demand, and now the four kilometres of beach have been enhanced by an impressive promenade, which stretches all the way to Caleta de Vélez, a port providing over 200 berths and offering sailing and water sports. Throughout the summer, there are many Chiringuitos on the beach, serving fresh barbequed fish and ice cold beers. In 2002, Paseo de Larios was pedestrianized, and is now a tranquil promenade, with plenty of pavement cafés and restaurants. At the seafront end of Larios is a line of bars and discos which continue throughout the night on Fridays and Saturdays. The history of Torre is uncertain, but it is thought that it might have been part of an ancient Greek settlement, known as Mainake, which was destroyed by the Carthaginians. Tombs of the Carthaginians were found at the mouth of the river Velez. More recently, it was a small fishing village until major development began in the 1970’s.

Lake Viñuela

is a 15 minute drive from the N340 Autovia, leaving at the junction for Velez Malaga. Head inland along the A356; this direction also leads to numerous inland white villages. The first turning on our map is to Benamocarra, which is sign posted to the right after the last roundabout into Velez Malaga. This road will take you back over the main road and then also on to Iznate, and divides to take you to Almachar, El Borge and Cutar. The second turning off the A356 is on the right (after the Repsol garage) to Trapiche. Continue on the A356, and immediately you will see another junction on the left, sign posted to Benamargosa, Triana, Comares and Cutar. This road will also take you as far as Rio Gordo (for a scenic drive). There is a popular Spanish bar on the corner of this junction called El Cruz. Back on the A356, continue on and you will pass another junction on the right, to Canillas de Aceituno, and finally you will see Lake Vinuela in front of you. Turn right before the lake for Puente de Don Manuel, Alcaucin, Viñuela and Periana; carry straight on for Los Romanes, Rio Gordo and Colmenar.

Frigiliana

encompass 39.74 sq km within which live just over 3,000 people year round. Frigiliana is a popular tourist destination, and because there are many holiday homes here, the population triples during the summer months. The history of Frigiliana dates from prehistoric times. The village has been inhabited by numerous civilisations from the Phoenicians and Romans to the Arabs, who had the greatest impact on the town’s development. During the Christian reconquest, Frigiliana was the site of numerous battles culminating in the famous battle of the Rock of Frigiliana in 1569 which ended in the complete expulsion of the Moorish people. One can learn the history of this struggle by walking through the streets of the historic section where there are a series of twelve ceramic plaques posted about which explain the entire story.
