Home & Property News Home & Property News What to do first... sell or buy?
In the years before the crisis it was normal to start the purchase of your new house before selling your current home. In fact, financial institutions promoted banking products that operated in this way. However, the bubble burst and many families who purchased a new loan before selling their previous home, had two mortgages they could not afford. This resulted in thousands of evictions and bad experiences. Today experts recommend ALWAYS sell first, and then buy. Financial products do allow to buy first but there are more disadvantages than advantages and it is a risky situation. Before investing in a new home there should be a clear economic situation of the person and the budget that they have.
Advantages in selling before buying • You have economic tranquility - you know what you have and what you can spend. • You are not forced to sell in a hurry, you can wait until a buyer pays what you ask. • It is easier to access a mortgage. • Save on capital gains tax by reinvesting the money from the sale of your propety • If you sell and you are not sure what to buy you can always rent.
Losing your bond on a rented flat With the new tennancy law of June 2013, the tenant was required to pay a security bond to repair any possible damage. This deposit is equivalent to one month’s rent, and is usually returned to the tenant on completion of the contract. But in what circumstances can the owner seek compensation and use of the bond? • If the house is not left as it was when it was first rented. The tenant must leave the property as it was found when he came to live there. Otherwise it can result in a loss of the deposit. • If the contract is terminated because there has been damage to the property. The landlord can claim part, or all of the deposit. • If the tenant leaves the property before the end of the contract. The tenant may leave the contract after 6 months if it is put in writing and the owner is given 30 days notice. • If the property is left without completing the full rental agreement. If the tenant leaves without paying the final monthly payment, the owner can seek compensation. 6 THE MARKET PLACE

Optimism in the Real Estate Sector Experts are optimistic about the current situation in the real estate sector and that the stock of unsold flats, generated after the burst of the housing bubble, is not a problem. This is the conclusion drawn after the 2015 Madrid Real Estate Conference, held in the framework of the Madrid International Real Estate Exhibition. Industry experts are talking about stabilization and recovery and that overheating of the sector should not happen if the contribution to GDP does not exceed 10%. The vice president of the International Financial Analysts, said “The recovery will not reach pre crisis levels and the contribution to GDP will be a positive
The average price of rental housing in Spain rose 0.2% in April to 6.98 euros per square metre per month. This is a 1% increase on the same month last year. In recent months though we have gone from widespread falls in all regions to rises in most parts of Spain. Of the 345 municipalities analyzed by Fotocasa Spain, 196 of them registered increases in the price of rent in April, while 128 suffered declines. Ibiza saw a big rise in rent prices by 14.7% whereas San Fernando in Cadiz saw the biggest fall of 5.4%. Ibiza is now an average price of 14.6 euros per sq metre per month, followed by San Sabastian at 11.96 euros.
How to create a recycling corner in a small kitchen 45% of people do not recycle in Spain, partly due to a lack of space in the home. However, it is not necessary to have a large room for this task.
Find new places
Even if you have a small kitchen, you can always find new places to exploit. Some spaces are often wasted, like under the sink, walls, the floor or corners of cupboards. You can buy many buckets, bins or containers to adapt a space for recycling. Use the space under the sink for organic waste. You can choose a box with divisions which allows separation for plastic, glass and organic. Take advantage of a corner to place stackable bins or containers for collection of waste - or alternatively, if you have a cupboard, just be careful
that the containers have lids.
Batteries and Bulbs
Keep the recycling of batteries and bulbs separate from other things because of their contaminating potential. It is best to have a small bin or bag, properly labelled and stored out of the reach of children.
Options for everyone
There is something for everyone, raffia bags or plastic bags, stackable or modular storage cubes with divisions, individual bins, buckets or rotating cabinets. There is no excuse. You can find many practical elements to suit your needs that allow a corner to help care for the environment.

A traditional bee skip in the Museum of honey. The bee keeper would have put a spring swarm into this, and set fire to it at the end of the season, collecting the honey and killing the bees. It’s a social and neighbourly thing to do, keeping bees. They fertilise your neighbours’ fruit. The disadvantage is that bees sting, and this means you have to consider very carefully where you put a hive. You have to site it 25 metres from tracks and pathways and ideally the “bee line” from the hive to the nearest flowers should not cross a human pathway. I have a little citrus grove near to my water deposit (bees need to drink a lot) and this leads out to some steep wild land overlooking a (usually) dry ravine with an avocado plantation on the opposite slope. This seemed ideal. It’s a good idea to meet other bee keepers before you get your first bee hive and this can be difficult if you live in a foreign country so I went on Facebook and found “Beekeepers, Bee enthusiasts, honey lovers in Andalucia” that has news, tips discussion and adverts for bee enthusiasts. It’s an ex-pat site. I signed up for a course at the museum of honey – the “Casa Museo de la Miel de Malaga” in Colmenar. It was a two day course run by local Spanish bee

keepers who spoke English. One was a vet. Half of the course was conducted in the museum and half in the field doing practical work in the apiaries. It cost 180 euros for two days, which I thought a lot. The fact that it was very good value was partly due to the two venues – one for theory and one for practice, partly the friendliness and expertise of the teachers, and partly the other students who were all ex-pats. After fifteen years of meeting ex-pats in bars I half expected a bunch of morbidly obese chain-smoking alcoholic “Tinto Tories” with their dogs. I needn’t have worried. We turned out to be a group of eight charming, intelligent people. Apart from me of course. Almost everyone knew more about bee keeping than me (who knew nothing) and everyone was cleverer. Quite a shock. Perhaps it’s the bee keeping that makes the difference. So the education for me was many layered, and I met some nice people. Students learn best from each other, under the supervision of creative teachers. The most popular hive here in Andalucia is called the Layens hive, invented by Georges de Layens in the 1880’s. It’s simple and very cheap, consisting of a plain box with hole in the front for the bees to get in and out, a flat waterproof roof, and twelve frames inside, on which the bees build their honeycomb. Each box will house a colony – a single queen, thirty to sixty thousand infertile females (workers) and some fertile males (drones). The colony with its queen, drones, and workers is like a single living creature. It takes the teamwork of an entire hive to make honey. The queen (which might live for several years) lays thousands of eggs per day so that the nursery workers can raise thousands more worker bees. Some of these will guard the door of the hive, some will make new honeycomb, some will fan the hive with their wings to maintain a constant temperature, some will clean and renovate old comb and some will forage the flowers for nectar and pollen. When the colony gets too big for its box, the old queen will swarm, taking part of the colony with her, leaving a new queen to develop in the old hive. In this way a colony feeds, grows, breathes, and reproduces, just like a single animal. The brood and babies are produced in the centre of the hive, the honey and pollen are foods, and are stored in the periphery. The bee keeper manages the hive and harvests the honey by removing one or two of the outer frames of the Layens hive, always leaving enough honey for the bees to get through the winter. To do this the keeper needs a bee proof suit, hat and veil and a smoker. Old leaves or dry grass is put into the smoker, lit
The bee keepers suit. Note the gloves! The tin box to the left contains fuel for the smoker. The smoker with its bellow is on the right. and the smoke puffed into the hive. The bees, sensing a forest fire, gorge themselves on honey. This is so that they can rebuild the colony as efficiently as possible after the fire. However, once their bodies are stiff with honey, they are unable to bend their abdomens to sting. Also the smoke masks the alarm pheromones that bees release when under attack. So the colony remains calm when the hive is opened. The two great enemies of the honey bee are varroa and insecticide. Varroa is a mite that infects the hive and destroyed Spanish honey production during the last century. Bee management requires its constant control, and you have to register your hive with the authorities so that it can be monitored. The pesticide threat is well-known and has been the cause of a mass die off of bees since 2005. The latest herbicide threat comes from neonicotinoid herbicides. The bees become addicted to the nicotine in them and bring them back to the hive. The Junta de Andalucia passed new laws this year restricting their use, though Spain is notorious for over use of all forms of pesticides and has been heavily fined by the EU for their excessive use. So wish me luck keeping this lot alive. At the moment its only one hive – just 40,000 bees, but I shall be looking to expand and I’ll keep you posted!!

The Festival of San Juan If you can experience one festival Spain has to offer, give this one a try... always a memorable, surreal and magical night to remember...
O
ne of Spain's greatest festivals, the Fiesta de San Juan is set to take place on the night of the 23rd of June - the shortest night of the year. During this festival the bonfires of Saint John are lit in cities all around Spain but especially on the beaches in coastal areas. According to tradition, anyone who jumps over a bonfire three times on the noche de San Juan will be cleansed and purified and their problems will be burned away. Another popular tradition for this festival is exactly on midnight people jump into the sea (or at least splash themselves with the waters of the sea). This has the same cleansing result as jumping the fire. Here in the Malaga province the beaches are packed with revellers, party goers and families enjoying a night of music, dancing and merriment. The beach bars or chiringuitos often have entertainment
prepared on this night with live music, fire dancers and throwers and the beach is open to people who wish to camp there for the whole night (the only night of the year when camping is allowed). Families with young children often set up camp for the night, with big sun shades, tents and a full barbecue, with all kinds of delicious fish on the menu! In some parts of Spain, three potatoes are placed under the pillow before going to sleep; one peeled, one half peeled and one unpeeled. In the morning, pulling out one of the potatoes without looking predicts the year ahead. The
peeled potato signifies monetary headaches, the half peeled one means you will go through many ups and downs, and the unpeeled one predicts health and prosperity in store. If you can experience one festival Spain has to offer, give this one a try... always a memorable, surreal and magical night to remember. Prepare yourself for a long night, take plenty of food, drinks and a jumper (the sea mist late on can make it feel cooler) and try and stay up for the sunrise on the morning of the 24th - a beautiful sight after a special night of the year.

Car News

Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV The Outlander is unique, no doubt about that. And before driving it, it is hard to work out whether you might like it or not. It is a SUV with plenty of room in the cabin for five adults and has a huge luggage area. The rear seats fold almost flat, but are a bit fiddly to put down. You first of all have to lift the seat squab up, and tilt it forward, then fold the back-rest down. But when you have done this, it is van-like in size... it’s enormous!
A
nother unique feature of the Outlander is that it is a proper 4 wheel drive SUV with 190mm ground clearance, so it will go over lumps and bumps and off-road with confidence. But its biggest unique feature for this type of car is the fact it is a petrol Plug-in-Hybrid-Electric-Vehicle - or PHEV for short. It is powered by a 1,998cc petrol engine that produces 119bhp. It accelerates from 0 to 62mph in 11 seconds and has a top speed of 106 mph. The battery pack is rechargeable either from the mains supply or the petrol engine can recharge it whilst running. To mains charge the PHEV you can either use the 5 metre charging cable supplied with the car with a three pin plug, or another cable that can be connected to charging stations that are located up and down the country (UK). We chose to charge the Outlander at home, using the three-pin plug. This is somewhat troublesome, as using this method for 2.5 hours only added 8 miles of range to the car, so it would take around 8-hours to get a range of 25 miles. The maximum quoted by the manufacturer is 32.5 miles but getting this range, we’re told, is extremely unlikely. If you are charging the Outlander at home you really need a wall box, as having to use a plug inside the house is not easy. If you put the cable through the window, or the door, neither will close, so you have to leave them open - which is not a good idea at night. There are a variety of buttons in the car, to make it drive in different modes. Here are three of them: 1. EV Drive Mode - EV Drive Mode is an all-electric mode in which the front and rear motors drive the vehicle using only electricity from the drive battery. With zero on-road petrol consumption and zero CO2 emissions, the driver can enjoy a quiet and very eco-friendly performance in this mode, subject to weather conditions and the extent to which the car’s heating system and air conditioning are used. 2. Series Hybrid Mode - In Series Hybrid Mode, the petrol engine operates as a
18 THE MARKET PLACE
generator supplying electricity to the electric motors. The system switches to this mode when the remaining charge in the battery falls below a predetermined level and when more powerful performance is required, such as accelerating to pass a vehicle or climbing a steep gradient. 3. Parallel Hybrid Mode - The system switches to Parallel Hybrid Mode when the vehicle reaches high speeds. In this mode the high-efficiency petrol engine provides most of the motive power, assisted by the electric motors as required, such as when more powerful performance is needed to accelerate or climb a slope. The Outlander PHEV comes with an “ECO Mode” switch that controls electricity and fuel usage for increased efficiency at the touch of a button and an ECO Driving Support System Display
that shows just how much energy is being saved on the road. But trying to get the right balance or the best consumption is not easy to determine, but I’m sure the cars systems know what’s going on, even if you don’t. There is also a “save” button which allows the driver to preserve the electricity left in the batteries for use later in the journey and a “charge” button that allows the the batteries to be charged using the petrol engine. The car is very well equipped with loads of standard equipment; the list is just endless, things such as cruise control, dual zone climate control, leather upholstery on all but the base, 18” alloy wheels. The trim line up is: GX3h, GX4h, GX4hs, GX5h and GX5hs, so plenty of choice... possibly too much. Prices in Spain start at 42.000 euros.

Barcelona on the Cheap! By Jessica Infantino Trumble
Barcelona offers something for everyone, from beautiful blue skies and sea to oneof-a-kind Modernista architecture. It’s a city that you definitely want to immerse yourself in without worrying about breaking your budget. So if you’re planning a trip to Barcelona soon, here are six ways to maximize your time and money while taking in all the city has to offer.
1. Tour Gaudi and other Modernista sights from the outside Some of Barcelona’s most iconic attractions – including Sagrada Família, Casa Milà and Casa Batlló – come with steep admission fees that can add up quickly. Luckily you can still enjoy many of these architectural gems from the outside, avoiding both high costs and long lines. My recommendation would be pick one to visit (the Sagrada Família is a must-see) and devise a walking tour to see other Modernista sights. And even though the once-free Park Güell began charging admission fees back in October 2013, it’s still pretty affordable by comparison.
2. Take advantage of free sightseeing Not everything in Barcelona requires a ticket. In fact, some of the best highlights the city has to offer are completely free. For example, no trip to Barcelona is complete without walking down the famous pedestrian street La Rambla. You can also explore the winding streets of the Barri Gòtic neighborhood, visit the Barcelona Cathedral, wander through Citadel Park and enjoy street art, fountains and monuments all without opening your wallet. In addition, several museums offer free admission after 3 p.m. on the first Sunday of the month, including the Picasso Museum and the Catalan Art Museum, while others like the Maritime
Museum and the Barcelona History Museum have free afternoon hours every Sunday.
3. Get a pass to save money AND time As with many cities, combo passes or cards can be a worthwhile investment if you plan on doing a lot of sightseeing in Barcelona. The Articket BCN includes admission to six popular museums including their temporary exhibits, plus you’ll be able to skip the ticket-buying lines at these sights. An added bonus, the pass is valid for 3 months so you won’t feel forced to cram in the sights in a set number of days. If you have a packed itinerary, the Barcelona Card also offers free admission or discounts at many major sites (where you can also skip lines), as well as free public transportation for 2, 3, 4 or 5 days. For transportation, full and multi-day passes are available but I recommend getting a T10 Card. This handy 10-pack of tickets cuts the price of a single ride nearly in half, and is sharable among multiple people. One ride is good for 75 minutes of unlimited travel on metro, bus, suburban and regional train lines, which includes trips to the airport.

Even bigger portions called raciones offered at some places are still a better deal than fancy sit-down restaurants. Be aware that prices can fluctuate too depending on where you eat – food and drink may be cheaper standing at the bar versus sitting at a table, or sitting inside versus outside. Expatria, the biggest country you have never heard of! Here at the Expat Survey we take ‘expat’ to mean anyone who lives outside of their nation of origin for at least six months of any twelve month period.
T
here are 232 million people living outside of their nation of origin but what do we actually know about them? Immigrant or expat, tax exile or asylum seeker, estimations vary wildly and the knowledge of a population of almost a quarter of a billion has proven shallow. The Expat Survey conducts independent research that aims to paint a more accurate and textured picture of a constantly changing landscape. To emphasise this dearth in intel, if we took the world’s expatriates and put them in a country, how would that country look and feel? ‘Expatria’ - our imaginary nation of expatriates/immigrants - would have a population of 232 million, rising from 154 million in 1990 and 175 million in 2000, according to UN statistics. This ranks Expatria as the fifth most populous nation on the planet, over three and a half times the number of people in the United Kingdom and sandwiched between Indonesia and Brazil - half the population size of the European Union. Expatria’s population growth rate of over a third since 1990 is matched by Brazil and Indonesia, two of the fastest growing economies worldwide.
An expatriate (sometimes
shortened to expat): is a person temporarily or permanently residing in a country other than that of the person’s upbringing. The word comes from the Latin terms ‘ex’ (out of) and ‘patria’ (country, fatherland).
The average age of the citizens of Expatria would be 38, being at their average youngest in Africa and oldest in Oceania. UN statistics estimate that 48% of the population would be women and 26 million of the residents aged 65+ years of age and proportionally greater represented than they are in the world population, 11% of the migrant 26 THE MARKET PLACE
population yet just 8% of the world’s population. Interestingly, 20-34 year olds represent 64 million people and also less females, which can be attributed to the transit of male migrant workers, especially those based in Asia. The population of Expatria must be considered one of the most diverse on the planet. The largest proportion of people coming from South Asia, accounting for 36 million of the population, with about 19 million migrants living in Europe, some 16 million in Northern America and about 3 million in Oceania. The second and third largest groups coming from Central America and the Caribbean, 17.4 million Central Americans are living in the US. Measuring the wealth of Expatria is difficult; however remittance figures estimated by the World Bank give some indicator of the economic power of expatriates worldwide. The World Bank estimates $435 billion will be sent in remittance in 2014, outweighing ODA (official development assistance) by a factor of three. Although being a crude comparison, this figure would project Expatria as a top 40 world economy in 2014 if taken as its GDP. This is without considering the estimated wealth of tax exiles to be found in the havens of Switzerland, Luxembourg and the like. A study conducted by economist James Henry suggests at least £13 trillion ($20tn) squirreled away worldwide, which would catapult its ranking to the top of the table. The citizens of Expatria are workers in a diverse range of fields that have significant economic power. European immigrants (European Economic Area) in the UK have contributed £20bn a year from 2001 to 2011 according to a study conducted by University College, London. Not only are expats economic contributors but work in various sectors. In the case of the UK, The Telegraph states that migrants from within the EU primarily fulfilling manual work, in factories and farming, whilst Non-EU immigrants are prominent in
professional roles in health and science.
The population of Expatria equates to 3.2% of the world’s population but what do we really know about them? The understanding of Expatria is in black-and-white with broad strokes, while the UN suggest a worldwide population of extra-nationals is 232 million, independent research conducted by Finaccord suggests a figure 56 million worldwide in 2014. At least there are estimates for the size of this universe, beyond quantitative figures, little is known of the quality and composition of the lives of expatriates. This article has highlighted that there is a massive population, globally-based, that people know very little about, and what is by no means concrete. In 2013, The Guardian estimated that ethnic minorities, 14% of the population of the United Kingdom, is not effectively marketed to by businesses, only emphasising the massive Expatriashaped hole in market intelligence. The findings of the Expat Survey 2013 illuminated that expatriates spend more time on sites from their country of origin rather than sites of their country of residence; 70% still choosing to shop online from native sites. Statistics like these emphasise the inability of business to understand the spending habits of immigrant communities. The deficiency of information highlights the need for independent research, the need for the Expat Survey. The English historian J. H. Plumb once stated, ‘statistics may give shadow and depth to the picture [yet] they cannot paint it.’ In regards to expatriate understanding, it is The Expat Survey that acts as the brush to paint the market’s landscape, to get the wants of a potential quarter billion understood by relevant and influential business. by William Purbrick, digital and research assistant for The Expat Survey. www.theexpatsurvey.com

Local News Local News Local News Vélez gang supplied minors for sex
Eleven people aged between 35 and 75 have been detained in an investigation into the sexual exploitation of minors in Vélez-Málaga. The leader of the gang allegedly showed potential clients photos of naked 16-year-old girls on his phone and invited them to choose one. National Police say enquiries began in February when it was discovered that the girls were being offered for prostitution at a farm in the countryside outside the centre of Vélez. Investigators were able to identify gang members, some of whom were posted as lookouts to warn of police presence while others collected the girls from their homes and took them to the farm, later returning them.
Salad scandal hits Almeria A hardhitting British television report on farming practices in Almería and Murcia provinces has left the agricultural sector "shocked and indignant". Channel 4 recently broadcast a documentary entitled 'What's the real cost of your fresh salad?' showing footage of migrant workers claiming they were mistreated by employment agencies and agricultural companies. The report was also published by the Daily Mail Online, and subsequently picked up by the Spanish farm sector and the provincial press. The report claimed that vegetables that end up on the shelves of major UK supermarkets are produced using "an army of modern-day slaves", despite stores claiming all food is "responsibly sourced".
Nerja in the spotlight A large programme production company Shine Iberia has chosed Nerja to shoot a new cooking show called Cocineros al volante. (Cooks behind the wheel). The programme will be shown in the summer on RTVE channel. The show features chefs who will travel across Spain in food trucks. There will be 60 people staying in Nerja for 5 days to complete the shooting and 70 locals will need to be used in the filming tasting some of the dishes and voting on the best.

change the law to protect home owners with planning issues. Now SOHA in Axarquia, AUAN in Almeria and AMA in Cantabria (all illegal home associations) have joined together to appeal directly to senators to vote in favour of changing the law. A letter has been sent to the senators asking for their support and stressing the need for change for those innocent people who purchased property in good faith. The associations collectively are seeking to protect citizens from abuse by constructors, promoters and the authorities.

in Spain for pre-wedding celebrations. Revellers celebrating their last few days of singlehood along with their friends are spoiling it for everyone, local traders complain. Hotels and bars are now beginning to put signs on their doors reading, 'we do not serve hen and stag party customers'.“This is a bar, not a circus,” said one disgruntled proprietor. “Groups of young women and men in silly costumes with megaphones and trumpets entering drunk are lowering the tone. “We are not going to allow people to come into our bar in their underwear or decked out in 'erotic' decorations or any other unsuitable garb when we have families with children dining peacefully on the premises. “And they cause loads of problems – they don't respect other customers, they leave without paying, and our neighbours have started to complain.” Head of Granada's hostelry federation Antonio García says hen and stag weekends are 'ruining the city's reputation' as a tourism destination. “Yes, we know they spend money in the city, but what price are we paying for this?” says García. “People are going to stop going to Granada's most attractive parts such as the C/ Navas and the Plaza Nueva, because they're not comfortable with what they're seeing and hearing. Parties of this type should be held in privatelyrun premises away from the city centre.”

Horoscope June Mar. 21st - Apr. 20th
One moment this month you would be enjoying peaceful tranquility that offers predictability and stability. Another moment brings volatility and unpredictability in your life. You learn, over time, to accept and maintain balance between both this month. You're entering a period that will demand more flexibility than you're probably used to giving.
Gemini
You are capable of asking questions in ways that encourage specific responses. You know that steering conversations in certain ways will increase your chances of getting what you want. It is usually after the fact that the person responding realizes how your responses were engineered.
Aries
May 22nd - June 21st
July 23rd - Aug. 21st
It's not easy to bid farewell to what is familiar and comfortable. In an area of your world, possibly connected with home and family, winds of change are starting to become gusts. Something positive and necessary is coming but to receive it, you're going to have to make space or do some reworks. Do so in the knowledge that you will gain something special.
Libra
You are not impressed by the way your life is moving at present. You could find yourself becoming increasingly complacent in some ways through expecting innovative developments and the occasional miracle. The sky speaks now of you being impressed, surprised and delighted in some way – and in that order, too!
Sagittarius
Some secrets related to you can remain buried or undetected for many years. If willing you may reveal some to your closest associates in life. Something you'd prefer was concealed could be rearing its head now. Honesty really is the best policy where this little episode is concerned.

With little effort, you would be able to get rid of the fears that have been haunting you for quite sometime. Fear, however, is holding you back in some way now. Something you're afraid of is preventing you from attaining something very special. Do what you fear most and your fear will truly fade away. The month ahead promises good trends in your personal space.

During this month you would be able to question certain things that happen in your personal life. You have faith in the fact that family members know more about or are more capable of doing something than you are. Surely, they must look to you for guidance or inspiration. If you're not receiving support in ways you wish you were, then ask for it.
You appear now to be up against someone who sees you as inferior and someone who couldn't possibly be as knowledgeable as they are. You're about to prove them very wrong. The month holds great promises on your work front. There would be ample scope for finishing off long-pending tasks now. Finances might take a beating. During the month the cosmos is focused now on gently encouraging you to assess how you prioritize what you do on a daily basis and identify ways of improving how you do it. You're about to become even more effective where organizational matters are concerned. It's time to do a few things differently for a change. Opportunities always bring change. Upheaval and potential insecurity you feel are attached to seizing an opportunity now or taking a risk could outweigh the benefits of what you're considering doing. A decision about ''where you go from here'' in an area of your world can't be avoided but it can be seen as the very positive step forward that it is... if you're willing to see it as that. Familiarity, they say, breeds contempt. Soon, you will be released from one you've been in for too long. Get out of your comfort zone and be prepared to take some hard risks in life. This is the only way to march ahead in life. Else you would be trampled upon by others who are overtaking you in the long race. Keep going Capricorn, do not be complacent. A sense of fairness prevailing in a certain area could be taking up much thinking time now. It doesn't appear to be a case of someone missing out or going without but more to do with you being keen to ensure that what's good for one person is good for another. There is no need though to enforce justice. It will come about on its own, in its own time.

Her works are original, autobiographical, lyrical. ‘I Have Been to Hell and Back’ is her most comprehensive retrospective in Spain, comprising more than 100 works – a third of which had never been on display before in our country.

ore than 120 people came along to what was intended to be a party in the way the street party became symbolic of that period when hostilities ended in Europe on the 8th May 1945. Dress was optional and many guests did take the opportunity to recreate the styles of the time – nurses, spivs, fire wardens, uniformed personnel, and land “girls” among them. The atmosphere was tremendous and I think it is safe to say that it was a most enjoyable evening. Music and choreography were provided by Barry Marx and his wife Pauline, and for their stupendous efforts we say a mighty thank you. As is always the case with such events, much time and effort can be spent in organisation, but it is the people who attend who really make them successful and on this occasion, they were superb. THE MARKET PLACE 43
How To Prevent Osteoporosis What causes osteoporosis? Aside from the normal ageing process, a few things can increase our risk of osteoporosis: • Menopause – Falling oestrogen levels are the biggest contributor to osteoporosis – which is why women are more susceptible. • Low hormone levels for other reasons - For women, removal of ovaries, anorexia nervosa or taking drugs for breast cancer may affect hormone levels and increase risk. In men, low levels of testosterone after surgery or treatment for some cancers can also increase the risk. • Genetics – If one of your parents has broken a hip, you are more likely to have a fracture yourself. • Race – Black Afro-Caribbeans tend to have bigger, stronger bones so are at lower risk than those of Caucasian or Asian origin. • Low body weight – If you have low BMI i.e below 19kg/m2, you are at greater risk of developing osteoporosis and fractures.
• Illness – Other health conditions such as Crohn’s or coeliac disesase (which affect how well you absorb your food and nutrients), or rheumatoid arthritis, hyperthyroidism or hyperparathyroidism can also increase our risk. • Medication – Certain drugs such as steroids, drugs for epilepsy or mental health problems may also cause bone thinning if taken for long periods of time.
What can we do? The good news is that the sort of things we need to do to reduce the risk of osteoporosis are simply habits we need to get into to help our health in many ways. The key is to build up your ‘bone bank’… invest in making sure your bone is as strong and dense as possible so that the natural ageing process has less effect. How?
• Healthy eating – Ensure you have a balanced diet containing plenty of vitamins, minerals and other nutrients that your bones need. Aim to eat plenty of fruit and veg, wholegrain, unprocessed carbohydrates, milk and dairy products, and protein such as meat, fish, eggs, pulses, nuts and seeds. • Calcium – Have plenty of calcium, which is essential for strong teeth and bones. Whilst a varied diet should provide enough calcium, some may benefit from supplements. Recommended dose is 700mg per day, or 1,000mg a day for those with established osteoporosis – but don’t overdo it as too much calcium can cause other problems. • Vitamin D - Vitamin D is essential to help your body absorb calcium. We make vitamin D ourselves when our skin is exposed to sunlight – and so over 1/3 of us are vitamin D deficient in the winter months. We can get vitamin D from our diet if we eat plenty of oily fish, but in winter, supplements may be beneficial. • Get moving – The more force we put through our bones, the stronger they become. Try to incorporate 30 minutes of activity like jogging, skipping, aerobics, tennis, and dancing five times a week into your life. Not only will it be good for your bones but also for your general health, weight and well-being. • Stop smoking – Yet another reason to bin the evil fags is the fact that smoking poisons the cells that are trying to replace the old bone structure with fresh and strong bone – so your bones become weaker and weaker. • Steady on the alcohol – Drinking above recommended limits significantly increases the risk of breaking bones… and not just because you are less steady on your feet, but because your bones are much weaker too.

Comparing Sweden and Norway’s back pain prevalence Escala: mínimo tamaño.
Searching the internet for some interesting news, I came across a few scientific studies that were done early in this century in Norway and Sweden. One particularly caught my attention, as it 10 mm compared the two countries in prevalence of low back pain and the related work absence. (Prevalence of low back pain and sickness absence: a "borderline" study in Norway 31,737 mm and Sweden. Norwegian Back Pain Network, Research Unit, HALOS, University of Bergen, Bergen, Norway. Camilla Ihlebaek). The conclusions of this study were that the Swedes had a significantly higher chance of getting back pain compared to the Norwegians, but that contradictory to this the Swedes had a lower sickness absence due to this back pain. The researcher’s belief that the difference in the two countries’ health systems might be a reason for this. To quote the study: “This contradiction might partly be explained by the economical "disincentives" in the Swedish health compensation system.” In any case, the percentage of the working population that suffered with back pain in both countries was between 60% (Norway)Sobre andRetícula. 70% (Sweden). If you imagine that the majority of people suffer from back pain in Norway and Sweden (Other European countries have very similar numbers), why is it that not more people work to prevent it? One of the biggest reasons for this I speculate, is the strength of some myths that still are in place in the belief systems of most people. The general public simply doesn’t know that there is a lot that can be done to get rid of back pain and to prevent it from happening. 46 THE MARKET PLACE

Free Medicine....continued!
by Knud Byrjalsen, Chiropractic Clinic, Nerja.
For those of you who have followed the previous articles on water and why to drink it, l said in the April issue of Market Place that we would be looking into 'Hypertension' in the next issue... That didn't happen in the May issue, so here it is... Unfortunately in today's society, when we have something to say that might not meet with approval from the establishment, we need to make a disclaimer, to cover our backsides. Therefore: "Dear everybody, the info in this article is not a result of my personal research..." All info is coming from a medical doctor in the US , named Dr Batman (almost his real name) who spent most of his life practising the discoveries that you will find in this, and previous articles in this fine magazine. However, at the same time l'd like to say that l find it absolutely vital information to anybody on this planet and also that l think we should pay attention to the few dedicated people that spend a lifetime making the world a better place. As l mentioned earlier, this time l shall pass on to you the important discoveries on the effect of dehydration and the almost epidemic condition of ' Hypertension'. Here is a great starter on what is sure to be raising a few eyebrows: High blood pressure (essential hypertension) is an adaptive process to a gross body water deficiency. The blood vessels of the body have been designed to cope with the fluctuations of their blood volume and the tissue requirements by opening and closing the different vessels (arteries). When the total fluid volume in the body is lowered, the main vessels also have to close their lumen (diameter), otherwise there would not be enough fluid to fill the space given to blood volume in the design of that particular body. Failure to adjust capacity to blood volume by the blood vessels would cause the gases to seperate from the blood and fill the space causing gas locks (NOT GOOD). Shunting of blood circulation is a normal routine for the body. When we eat, for instance, most of the circulation is directed into the intestinal tract. This is done by closing capillary (small arteries or vessels) circulation elsewhere. This means that when we eat, more tiny vessels are opened in the gastrointestinal tract, and fewer are opened in the major muscle systems. Only important areas are kept at full voume. This process is designed to cope with any PRIORITY work without the burden of maintaining EXCESS fluid volume in the body. Once the digestion has taken place, all areas are opened up again (which is why we always fell a bit sluggish after a big meal). In short, there is a mechanism for establishing a priority for circulating blood to any given area, some capillaries open, others close. And this order is naturally predetermined according to importance of function: brain, lungs, kidney, liver, etc. take priority to muscles, bones, skin, etc in blood circulation. WHEN WE DO NOT DRINK ENOUGH WATER to serve all needs of the body, some cells become dehydrated and lose some of their water to the circulation. Small vessels (capillary beds) in some areas will have to close down so that some of the slack in capacity is adjusted for. There is no alternative for the blood vessels other than closing their diameter (lumen) to cope with the loss in blood volume. And this process starts by closing some small

vessels in the less-active areas, otherwise what would keep these vessels open? The defficient quantity must either come from outside (WATER!), or from another part of the body, stealing needed fluids from some less important area. Capillary bed activity ultimately determines the volume of circulating blood in the body. The more the muscles are excercised , the more

dehydration over a long period of time. When we lose our thirst sensation, which is why we do not drink enough water, the shutting down of some of our vascular beds is the ONLY natural alternative to keeping the rest of the vessels FULL... and the question is then, how long can we go on like this ? And the answer is: long enough to ultimately become very ill and die...! Essential hypertension should, according to Batman, primarily be treated with an increase in daily water intake. Remember from previous articles that it takes up to several month to adjust your body to the increase of water. Dr Batman says it very straight forward: The current way of treating hypertension with diuretics is wrong to the point of scientific absurdity. The body is trying to retain its water volume, yet we say, ' No, you must take diuretics to get rid of water ' If we do not drink sufficient water, the only other way the body has to secure water in the system is keeping sodium in the body, but that only helps the priority areas. When diuretics are given to get rid of sodium, the body becomes more dehydrated. The use of diuretics maintains the body at an expanding level of deficit water management. That is why, after a while, diuretics are not enough, and supplemental medication will be forced on the patient. Water by itself is the best natural diuretic. If people who have hypertension and produce adequate urine increase their daily water intake, they will not need to take diuretics. If prolonged hypertension-producing dehydration has also caused heart failure complications, the water intake should be increased gradually so that fluid collection in the body is not excessive and unmanageable. The mechanism of sodium retention in these people is in overdrive mode. When water intake is increased gradually and more urine is produced, the edema fluid (swelling) that is full of toxic substances will be flushed out , and the heart will regain its strength. Well, there you have it. Something to think about for a lot of people. I hope you will spend the necessary time to read and understand the implications of Dr Batmanghelidj's (now you know why l didn't write his full name all the time!) research. He has been able to help many thousand of people, and dare l guess, save more than a few lives... Thanx for now, Knud.
the capillaries open and hold a greater volume of blood within the circulation reserves. Which is why excercise is so important for those suffering from hypertension. The capillary bed must remain open and full and offer NO resistance to blood circulation. This is important: when the capillary bed is closed and offers resistance, only an INCREASED FORCE (pressure, as in blood pressure!) behind the circulating blood will ensure the passage of some fluids through the system. Another reason why the capillary bed may become closed is shortage of water in the body. Water ultimately has to get into the cells. When there is a shortage of water, some www.clinicaquiropracticanerja.com cells will go without a portion of their normal needs, while other lucky ones will get their predetermined rationed Conventional Chiropractic Treatment amount. Calling spring fosterers!
CHARLIE This month, we introduce a little younger resident at our refuge. He's a gorgeous, gregarious (but not too) black podenco who was thrown over the refuge fence with his two brothers, Dante and Danni. A bit larger than a small dog, with lean longer legs, this boy is super friendly and gets along well with other dogs. He's just now turning twoyears and he has two secrets. He absolutely loves raw carrots and could eat a whole bunch all by himself and he likes to play ball very much. Very adoptable little chap! If you would like to know more about Charlie or any of our dogs please call Lola on 657-219-269 or visit our website www.apariv.com
Spring always brings an explosion of puppies and kittens and inevitably many are dumped at the Costa Animal Society (CAS) or other charities’ front doors. Unfortunately, CAS and all animal protection groups are already full to the brim with adult abandoned animals and there are no spare funds to place these new waifs in kennels. Therefore, CAS urgently needs people to foster puppies and kittens, even if it is just for a couple of weeks, until a more permanent solution can be found. Please contact the CAS office on 95 252 3607 for a noobligation chat if you could help with fostering. It’s an ideal way for pet lovers who spend only part of the year in Spain to enjoy the company of an animal while they are here.

Animal News Vandals with shot guns and dogs are being blamed for a vicious attack on birds in a Salobreña park. The bodies of 23 ducks were found in a pool in the Parque de la Fuente, with two more alive but seriously injured, one of which later died, while only three birds surviving the attack unscathed. Mayor Gonzalo Fernández Pulido described the incident as a “cowardly and senseless act” on one of the town’s landmarks. A bull which escaped from a bullring in Toledo last month left
11 people injured, one seriously, before being run over and killed by a police vehicle. A 30-year-old man required surgery after being gored in the thigh as the animal rampaged through the town of Talavera de la Reina. Six people were hospitalised, including a nine-year-old boy who suffered a face injury.

Neighbours of an Ibiza woman who has 100 stray dogs and cats on her property have reported her for noise nuisance. Council officials and a vet visited the animal lover in Sant Antoni in April and found that, despite only three having a vaccination certificate and microchip, all the pets were in good physical condition. Unsurprisingly, the neighbours have also complained about the smell. Greenpeace criticised the decision to tow a burning fishing vessel out to sea off Gran Canaria during April after it caught fire in Las Palmas port. The World Wildlife Fund said the area where the ship went down had deep-sea coral and a significant population of bottle-nosed dolphins. At least one loggerhead turtle, an endangered species, was rescued by Guardia Civil officers after becoming encrusted in oil. The creature, named Madonna, was later returned to the wild.

Spanish TV has shelved plans for a reality show featuring celebrities running with the bulls in Pamplona. The city’s mayor, Enrique Maya, said he was “completely opposed” to the idea and that the town would refuse to co-operate with the project. He added that if RTVE tried to turn the annual San Fermines festival “into something like Big Brother” the result would damage its image. Traffic on Granada’s southern ring road was disrupted one Friday during May after a mountain goat decided to take a stroll near the Serrallo commercial centre. It evaded capture until it was finally cornered in a pizzeria after a chase in the city’s Castaño district. The male goat, reported to be in good health, was taken to the Recovery Centre for Endangered Species.

was once a sleepy fishing village but now the town has a population of over 21,000. The Balcón de Europa is a magnificent promenade that was made famous by King Alfonso XII , who’s statue now takes pride of place at the far end. Close by is the 17th century Church of El Salvador, and the beautiful gardens of Capistrano Playa. The town boasts an active Centro de Cultura, and a new attraction is The Fuente de Europa in Verano Azul Park, which is a very impressive monument, made from pieces of stone donated from EU member states. There are many beaches to be found either side and in front of the town, including Burriana with its numerous cafés and restaurants. Here too, you can take advantage of the water sports on offer, including water skiing, scuba diving and sailing. Just outside Nerja on the coast road towards Maro is a very impressive aquaduct which used to supply the local sugar factory, but is now used to carry water to local farms.

Torre del Mar
is just 30 minutes from Malaga, and is the beach resort of Velez Málaga. Its population of 21,000 grows between June and September to 150,000. The towns attractions have expanded over the last few years to cope with the demand, and now the four kilometres of beach have been enhanced by an impressive promenade, which stretches all the way to Caleta de Vélez, a port providing over 200 berths and offering sailing and water sports. Throughout the summer, there are many Chiringuitos on the beach, serving fresh barbequed fish and ice cold beers. In 2002, Paseo de Larios was pedestrianized, and is now a tranquil promenade, with plenty of pavement cafés and restaurants. At the seafront end of Larios is a line of bars and discos which continue throughout the night on Fridays and Saturdays. The history of Torre is uncertain, but it is thought that it might have been part of an ancient Greek settlement, known as Mainake, which was destroyed by the Carthaginians. Tombs of the Carthaginians were found at the mouth of the river Velez. More recently, it was a small fishing village until major development began in the 1970’s.

La Herradura
nestles between the Punta de la Mona to the east and the rock of Cerro Gordo to the west. The bay enjoys shelter from west winds creating mostly crystal-clear waters, and is a popular location for water sports & paragliding. There are numerous beach bars and restaurants serving specialities of the region, including tropical salads, fresh fish or paella. The Marina del Este near La Herradura is tucked betwen Punta de la Mona to the west and Cotobro to the east. It boasts a beautiful port, elegantly designed to incorporate select shops, art galleries, bars and restaurants. This small strip of coast also claims to be the best place to dive between Almeria and Gibraltar, and is home to one of the areas leading diving schools.

Lake Viñuela
is a 15 minute drive from the N340 Autovia, leaving at the junction for Velez Malaga. Head inland along the A356; this direction also leads to numerous inland white villages. The first turning on our map is to Benamocarra, which is sign posted to the right after the last roundabout into Velez Malaga. This road will take you back over the main road and then also on to Iznate, and divides to take you to Almachar, El Borge and Cutar. The second turning off the A356 is on the right (after the Repsol garage) to Trapiche. Continue on the A356, and immediately you will see another junction on the left, sign posted to Benamargosa, Triana, Comares and Cutar. This road will also take you as far as Rio Gordo (for a scenic drive). There is a popular Spanish bar on the corner of this junction called El Cruz. Back on the A356, continue on and you will pass another junction on the right, to Canillas de Aceituno, and finally you will see Lake Vinuela in front of you. Turn right before the lake for Puente de Don Manuel, Alcaucin, Viñuela and Periana; carry straight on for Los Romanes, Rio Gordo and Colmenar.

Frigiliana
encompass 39.74 sq km within which live just over 3,000 people year round. Frigiliana is a popular tourist destination, and because there are many holiday homes here, the population triples during the summer months. The history of Frigiliana dates from prehistoric times. The village has been inhabited by numerous civilisations from the Phoenicians and Romans to the Arabs, who had the greatest impact on the town’s development. During the Christian reconquest, Frigiliana was the site of numerous battles culminating in the famous battle of the Rock of Frigiliana in 1569 which ended in the complete expulsion of the Moorish people. One can learn the history of this struggle by walking through the streets of the historic section where there are a series of twelve ceramic plaques posted about which explain the entire story.
