Establishments must remember to keep terraces clean All establishments that occupy a public thoroughfare such as bars, restaurants, and hotels have been reminded about the obligation to keep their terraces clean. Carmen Gonzalez the Councillor for Trade stressed the importance in complying with the Municipal Ordinance for the Occupation of the Public Way, which states that persons authorised to occupy the public road are obliged to keep it in a perfect state of cleanliness. Guide to visiting London
By Jessica Infantino Trumble
It's astounding that an estimated 10-12% of Brits have never visited London, their capital city... the big smoke... the city that many Europeans want to visit. Well, there is no time like the present, or so they say! London is a city that gets better with every visit. There is a lot to take in and it is rather spread out, with pockets of old and new that fit together like a patchwork quilt, and more sites to take in than even the busiest visitor could accomplish in one trip. Here's an overview of the basics you need to know about visiting London. Getting there and around Most visitors will arrive in London by either plane or train and have lots of transportation options to get them to their final destination. From both Heathrow Airport and the smaller Gatwick Airport, you’ll have several choices ranging like trains and buses depending on how much time you want to spend traveling and how much you want to pay. Once in the city, consider the Tube (also known as the Underground) your best friend to move around efficiently. Combine that with other modes of transportation ranging from the city’s iconic red double-decker buses

and black (or other colour) cabs and you’ll have no problem getting to where you need to go.
What to see and do If I listed everything there is to see and do in London you would be stuck here reading all day. But what I can say is that it’s one of those cities that offers something for everyone. First you have sites with a royal flair like Buckingham Palace, Kensington Palace and the Tower of London (one of my personal favourites). Churches not to miss include St. Paul’s Cathedral and Westminster Abbey, which carry a steep admission fee but are well worth their weight in pounds (especially the view from the dome of St. Paul’s). And perhaps the most city’s most famous site that’s not to be missed is the iconic clock and bell tower at the Palace of Westminster, popularly known as Big Ben. The good news is that London’s state-run museums offer free admission – The British Museum, Victoria and Albert Museum, National Portrait Gallery, Natural History Museum, National Army Museum and more – so you can mix and match with others that do charge like the Churchill War Rooms and

when it comes to where to stay in London, whether you’re looking for proximity to cultural hotspots or a quiet haven away from the touristy hubbub. For me, ease of getting to and around a city weighs high on my list of criteria, and I’ve fallen in love with 2 places in West London’s polished Belgravia neighbourhood, both of which are within walking distance of Victoria Station and several other Tube stops, restaurants and many popular sites. The first is the Lime Tree Hotel, an adorable B&B that’s the perfect fit for the charming neighbourhood where it’s located with beautifully decorated rooms, sugary sweet staff and a delicious made to order breakfast (either traditional English or Continental) in the mornings.
London Transport Museum. You can also get outdoors and enjoy the city’s many parks and squares, one of the most popular being Hyde Park. For theatre lovers, get your fill of the Bard at the Shakespeare’s Globe on the south bank of the Thames (including open-air performances, tours and more), or see a Broadway show in the West End (hint: discounted same-day tickets are available from the TKTS booth in Leicester Square). And don’t miss the city’s exciting food and shopping market like the Borough Market and the Portobello Road Market. Other popular shopping spots include big department stores like Harrods and Selfridges, Covent Garden and streets like Oxford, Regents, Bond and Carnaby. As you can see, the list goes on and on…
Where to eat and drink When in London go pubbing! Short for “Public House”, traditional pubs have been at the centre of British culture for centuries as a place for the public to gather, gossip and of course, drink. Boasting grin-worthy names like the Lamb and Flag and the Prince of Wales (and equally as fascinating histories as to how they got those names), pubs today remain a fun gathering place

for good drink (translation: beer) and food (and take in the occasional football match), the latter of which has bolstered in reputation for both quality and variety over the last several years. Beyond fish and chips and other hearty English dishes, you’ll now find menus peppered with creative sliders and sides to accompany your brew. In addition, London is a city of international cuisine, which allows visitors to take their taste buds on a tour of the world from Italian and French to Indian and Turkish cuisine. Plus, I always like to make at least one meal a “market meal” and my favourite place to graze my way through lunch is at the Borough Market in Southwark.
Where to stay There’s also a neighbourhood for every preference
I’ve also stayed at the B+B Belgravia just down the street, which offers everything a traveller could ask for – friendly service, a clean basic room, tasty breakfast and convenient location to public transportation stations. I especially loved the self-service coffee machine and biscuits available in the lobby around the clock.

ideas to change a boring wall
If you want to add a twist of decoration to your home, a good solution is to create a feature wall where you add colour or 3D objects. With small additions you can change the entire look and feel of the room. Here are 5 quick, easy and affordable ideas which hit the mark. 1) Create combinations with dishes Putting dishes on the wall - if you think this is an out of date trend, you are so wrong! The key to achieving a harmonious space with dishes is to combine pieces with the same shape and certain shades in common. In short, there has to be some element that draws the same line of argument between the different models of dishes.
2) A vertical garden for plant lovers Do you like decoration with a romantic feel? Well you are in luck, as it is very fashionable to decorate at the moment with flowers and plants. To get a good result, the best thing to do is opt for really good artificial flowers/plants and use some decorative adhesive tape. This will prevent them from wilting and you will not have to work really hard to keep real plants alive under often difficult conditions.
3) Mirrors - great allies The mirror is a classic decoration suitable for all types of environments. It is a sure hit. Of course, when you are hanging the mirrors it is necessary to study the location and distance from the light source in which they are placed. If you also opt for different mirrors, such as sun-shaped, you will get an elegant, sophisticated and super modern space.
4) Instruments also decorate Are you a music lover or do you have any instruments at home? Guitars, violins and drums can become decoration objects ideal for boho-style environments. If you want to get an asthetic look, you can also do it by adding other upholstery accessories and cushions. Other elements that can combine well in this wall feature are plants, so ... don’t forget them!
14 THE MARKET PLACE
5) The world on the wall Cartography and decoration fit perfectly. Maps are another interesting proposal to decorate our walls. You can find them on wallpaper or vinyl, so using them will be very quick and easy. Choose the format you prefer and get the job done!

El PAso in Rio Gordo Plaza de la Constitucion - Rio Gordo - 15th April
Easter Week is one of the most important times of the year in Riogordo. The processions and representations of ‘El Paso’ on Good Friday and Easter Saturday are the most memorable days. ‘El Paso’ is the representation of the Passion of the Christ. It has been celebrated for 57 years and been declared a Festival of National Tourist Interest. The dramatisation lasts approximately three hours and is divided into two parts: the public life of Jesus and the Passion. Both dramatisations are characterised by fidelity to the gospel texts and the careful staging and setting.
dia de la morcilla
30th April in the village of Canillas de Aceituno Every year in Canillas de Aceituno there is a celebration for ‘Blood Sausage Day’ in homage to one of the most prized products in the locality due to its production, seasoning, and ultimately, its flavour. Throughout this gastronomic day more than 300 kilos of sausage are distributed, accompanied by good wine from the area. The celebration tends to take place the last Sunday of the month of April, coinciding with the patron saint festivals in honour of Virgen de la Cabeza. The acts commence with a floral offering in the church; then the patron saint is carried by procession through the village streets and, after the closures, the gastronomic festivities commence.
world homeopathy awareness week April 10th-16th. During World Homeopathic Awareness Week there are free public events such as lectures, media interviews, volunteer first-aid at sports events, free & reduced clinics, written materials, pieces on Twitter and Facebook. Through more awareness and access to homeopathy resulting in profoundly improved health, the paradigm in the understanding of healing and healthcare can truly shift.
macy gray in concert Sunday 2nd April at Palacio de la Paz, Calle Recinto Ferial, Fuengirola Macy Gray will perform at the Palacio de la Paz in Fuengirola on 2 April. The American singer and actress is from Canton. Also known as Natalie Renee, Macy Gray is an R&B and neo soul singer. Not content with music, she also works in the world of cinema. Considered to be one of the most important voices in her style, she has even been compared to Billie Holiday. Her way of dressing and her hairstyle are her trademark.
world health day 7th April
World Health Day, celebrated on 7 April every year to mark the anniversary of the founding of WHO, provides us with a unique opportunity to mobilize action around a specific health topic of concern to people all over the world. The theme of 2017 World Health Day campaign is depression. A better understanding of what depression is, and how it can be prevented and treated, will help reduce the stigma associated with the condition, and lead to more people seeking help.

Japan Prints and Objet D'Art
until 23rd April at the Carmen Thyssen Museum in Malaga The temporary exhibition “Japón. Grabados y objetos de arte” at Malaga’s Carmen Thyssen Museum has on display about twenty works from Bilbao’s Museo de Bellas Artes (Museum of Fine Arts). Visitors can see a selection of the collection of traditional Japanese art assembled in the early twentieth century by José Palacio, a Bilbao collector. The works have been carefully selected and have a high artistic quality. On show are 24 ukiyo-e prints, a painting by Kawanabe Kyosai, objects with a range of uses and several seventeenth-century Japanese weapons. The art collection comes mainly from Paris. Trade liberalization in Japan during the Meji era fostered the massive export of pieces, leading to a fascination with Japanese art in mid-nineteenth century Europe, known as Japanism.
holy week in velez malaga 9th to the 16th April Easter Week in Vélez-Málaga has been declared a Festival of National Tourist Interest in Spain. 19 cofradías participate in it's processions. The main characteristics which deserve to be mentioned include the very slow swaying of its thrones with their beautiful floral decorations and a museum of Easter Week itself, which is accessible and can be visited in the church of Santa María de la Encarnación. Jueves Santo (Maundy Thursday) and Viernes Santo (Good Friday) are the most important days in terms of the number of brotherhoods and the size of thrones. The processions travel round the Plaza de la Constitución, Calle Salvador Rueda, Plaza San Juan de Dios, Calle Felix Lomas and the Plaza de las Carmelitas.

Car News by Martin Ward
Renault Megane, UK Press Event – Darlington Will the Megane light up your life?
T
he Renault Megane started life in 1995 replacing the Renault 19, and in its twenty-year history over 6.5 million have been built around the world. It has been available with many body styles including, hatch, sport hatch, sport tourer, coupe-cabriolet with many engine choices. This all-new model is the fourth generation and all-new it certainly is. Despite the recent rise in popularity and sales of C-Sector SUV’s and MPV’s you would think that the C-Sector hatch’s demand is beginning to wane but in fact the sector remains surprisingly stable and people globally are still buying hatches in similar numbers every year. This new car is all-new, from the chassis up, every body panel is new and a new interior too. The first Megane we drove was the Dynamique S Nav 1.5 dCi 110. We drove it from the hotel on a 70 mile test route. This car accelerates from 0-62mph in 11.3 seconds and has a top speed of 116mph with CO2 emissions of 96g/km. The official combined fuel consumption figure is 76.4mpg but because we were so eager to get-going, we forgot to reset the trip computer, so did not get an accurate fuel consumption figure for our journey. The 110 PS engine has more than enough power and is extremely quiet. In fact, there is hardly any noise in the cabin from the wind, road or engine, so it's a very nice place to spend many hours covering long journeys. We took the car through small villages and on the motorway, we took it on a good selection of roads and found it to be a good allrounder. It rode the lumps and bumps well and was very comfortable. We took the diesel car back and then got into a Megane GT which is powered by a 1.6-litre petrol engine that produces 205hp and accelerates from 0-62mph in 7.2 seconds and has a top speed of 143mph and CO2 emissions of 134g/km. The official combined fuel consumption figure is 47.mpg and this time we did reset the on-board computer. The 1.6 petrol engine on the test car was connected to a 7-speed EDC dual-clutch automatic gearbox with ‘Launch=Control’. To operate it you simply pull both steering wheel gear-shift paddles towards you. Put left foot on the brake, right foot on the accelerator, foot to the floor. Make sure there is nobody behind you, double 20 THE MARKET PLACE
check nobody in front and when it is safe, lift your left foot off the brake and in theory it should set off in a straight line, no wheel spin with a quick acceleration away. However, we tried launch control a few times and we got a bit of wheel spin. We then tried setting off the conventional way, no launch control, just pressing the accelerator to the floor and it really didn’t feel any different, maybe it was just the way we were doing it. We took the GT into the glorious surroundings of the moors, where you have to be very aware and careful not to hit the roaming sheep that are in abundance. The GT was a pleasure to drive on these quite demanding roads and it went round the corners with ease and felt so safe and solid. According to the on-board computer we achieved just over 32mpg on our 75 mile test route on a variety of road conditions. The GT has 4Control, which is a fourwheel steer system. Under 50mph in Sport Mode and 37mph in other modes the rear wheels turn in an opposite direction by up to 2.7 degrees to the front, making parking and low speeds easier. Above 50mph the front and rear wheels turn in the same direction by up to one-degree, giving it greater stability and helping it to manoeuvre but in reality it just felt odd - very odd, in fact. It seems to be one of those very clever systems that has cost a fortune to develop but is not really needed – a perfect solution to a problem that doesn’t exist. After driving the diesel with conventional steering, I’m sure, as others were on the press launch, that this would be more than adequate on the GT and 4Control really isn’t necessary. In the cabin, the controls are just so easy to understand and use, they are so intuitive. The touch-screen works so well and after just a few minutes of use, without an instruction book you feel so capable of doing anything with it – very clever, yet simple technology. There is plenty of rear legroom, although getting three adults on the back seat for any length of time might prove a bit uncomfortable but for two large adults there is loads of room - but this can be said for most C-Sector hatches. The luggage space is more than adequate for the size of car, but customers do have plenty of choice when buying this sort of car, or if they require something
a bit larger – then there is also plenty of choice of SUVs or MPVs. Although we only drove two cars, other engines will be available: a 1.2-litre petrol that produces 130 PS and a 1.6-litre diesel 130 PS. The Megane Tourer will be available in the UK from September, and a Hybrid Assist and dCi 165 will go onsale next year. The front and rear lights though are really the new Megane’s signature and are very distinctive and really make the car; they look fantastic. The rear taillights go across the boot and nearly meet in the middle and at night they look brilliant and are very effective. The front lights are very different and it must have been a bold decision by the designers and the people who signed them off in R&D - getting the extra cost of them past the bean-counters must have caused many discussions and arguments, I guess a lot of heated debates must have gone on but it’s a very wise decision, as the front and rear lights really do set the car off a treat. Prices for the new Renault Megane start from £16,600 OTR and go up to £25,500 OTR. The new Megane is built at Renault’s modern plant in Palencia, north of Madrid in Spain and is assembled to a very high standard. It's full of technology, with some really clever systems and it looks good, is well built with a well-appointed interior and priced to sell. It is now a real contender in this highly competitive sector.

12 questions with kitchen professionals Cocinas Nerja This month we interview Jan Alvemark from Cocinas Nerja who have been successfully providing a kitchen design and supply service for 11 years in the local area.
1) How many years have you had your kitchen company here in Nerja and how long have you been in the kitchen buisiness? I first started the business back in 2006, so for the last 11 years I have spent time building the business here in Nerja and altogether I have been in the kitchen business for 15 years. 2) How long does a typical kitchen project take from design idea to delivery of the new kitchen? The whole project is completed promptly and professionally and finished within 4-6 weeks. It usually takes 1 week for the installation, that’s because the granite people need a few days to cut and finish the worktop. 3) Can you talk us through the process of buying a kitchen from Cocinas Nerja? The whole process is seamless and straightforward. First of all the client arrives at the showroom that we have on the Poligono Castillo Alto in Nerja (which if you are leaving Nerja is the left hand turn at Lidl) and then gets a feel for the type of kitchen they want by looking at the examples on display. The customer will then choose the units, worktops, handles and appliances that they require and I will go and measure the space they have and can make suggestions. I will then come up with a design and give the customer a quotation. If that is satisfactory then all the items will be ordered and once they have arrived the kitchen fitting and work can begin. 4) Can you tell us more about the quality of products you use at Cocinas Nerja? The type of kitchens we sell most of are the hard painted door fronts which were originally a Spanish invention (sold all over the world). These door fronts are very popular in the high gloss finish but we also have a choice of matt finishes. We can also supply wooden door fronts and these can be viewed in our showroom. In terms of the worktops the customer can choose from Granite, Silstone, Dekton or
22 THE MARKET PLACE
solid wood (it’s very rare that a client wants the old formica type of worktop). Dekton is a new product which comes in different styles and colours and is a very hard work surface that can also be used in outdoor applications. This surface can stand hot pans being put on it and if it is written on with a pen, this also can be removed with nail polish remover. The customer can choose any brand they want for their appliances but the most popular ones that we recommend are Bosch, Siemens and Balay. 5) Can you source individual products/items at a customers request? e.g. An appliance from another manufacturer that you would not normally deal with? Yes, it is not a problem to make a special order of a certain product, for example on some occasions I’ve sourced Belfast sinks which had to be imported from the UK. 6) What assurance or peace of mind can you offer to potential clients that may be worried about problems in communication and how would you normally keep clients up to date with what is happening? We speak many languages here at Cocinas Nerja (English, Swedish, Norwegian and Spanish) which makes communicating with manufacturers, tradesmen and customers very easy for us. If a customer has any query no matter how small they just have to ring us here at the office and we will take care of it. We pride ourselves on our good after sales service, if something breaks they only have to call us and we can contact the manufacturer to resolve the issue. 7) Tell us more about your showroom and why you decided to move? The showroom gives the customer an idea of what styles of cabinet, worktop and appliances are available on the market and can help them imagine and choose what style they require in a kitchen for their own home. We moved to this showroom over 2 years ago, previously we were in a building further up the road. 8) How have kitchens changed in the last decade and what in your view are some of the best improvements in kitchens over the last few years? There are always improvements in kitchen cabinets, worktops and design and the latest product to hit the market is the Dekton work surface that we discussed in question 4. This product is manufactured by the Consentina group in Almeria and is excellent for the
kitchen because it is hard wearing and looks very attractive. I think another change in the last decade has been with the soft close drawers; 10 years ago we would have offered drawers without the soft close which would have been cheaper but now we do not offer this - everybody wants to have the soft close feature. Today the trend in cabinets is also leaning more towards large opening drawers rather than kitchen cupboards, especially nearer to the floor, as you do not need to bend down to see what is in them. 9) How do you keep on top of all the changes in kitchen design? My manufacturer keeps me up to date with any changes in new products or services coming on to the market. 10) In your opinion what are the 3 items in your "ideal kitchen" that you could not be without? Well, obviously you cannot be without a hob, sink and fridge but in terms of something that is nice to have many of our customers are choosing ceramic water filters which take away the taste of chlorine and clean the water. When they do, the clients also choose a special tap with the normal hot and cold water and drinking water that has been filtered. 11) What are the benefits of having a kitchen island? Well, many people want an island but really to have one it requires a lot of space, so often instead of an island we recommend a peninsula, which is a small island coming off the edge of the kitchen area. Islands and peninsulas work really well in todays modern kitchen where you find many people tend to eat and socialise. 12) Why should customers choose your company when they require a new kitchen? We are extremely professional, have great service and offer very good designs.
Do you need a new kitchen and don't know how and where to begin?
We invite you to come and see the biggest and most attractive showroom in Nerja We make you a computer generated design of a kitchen that is easy to work in and contains all the facilities you need. Combined with our quote without obligation and vast experience we will help you to create the kitchen of your dreams.

THE MARKET PLACE 37
Are you searching for a new car? Marketplace: Today we want you to introduce to Jürgen Haas and his new company www.autoagent.es. Hi Jürgen, how are you? Tell us something about your service. Jürgen: I’m importing premium 2nd hand cars from Germany on demand. My focus is on cars of German and British makes, between 1-5 years old and with up to 100.000km. The unique thing about my service is, that I offer the complete service from start to finish! Finding the car you want, completing the purchase and managing the import procedures. That means, the customer is only involved twice in the process: in the beginning, when he’s choosing the car and at the end, when he picks it up here in Frigiliana with the Spanish papers and number plates. For further peace of mind, I only promote pre-checked cars from dealers I know. (see the examples below). Marketplace: That sounds good. How do you make sure that you only sell good cars? Jürgen: First of all, I only buy from serious dealers in Germany and, secondly, before the purchase, the car is checked by an independent engineer using an 80 point checklist and also looking at model specific issues. Thereby, I can make sure that the car is in perfect condition. That’s in my interest as well, because I give at least a 1 year warranty on every car. Furthermore, in the whole ‘supply chain’ I only work with professionals: the car dealers, the engineers, the transport company and the gestoria. Marketplace: How long does the whole process take and what extra does it cost? Jürgen: The whole process takes between 2-4 weeks. It depends on the ITV and the DGT, how fast we can get an appointment and how fast they work. This doesn’t cost anything extra. The customer receives the final price before buying, including any costs or taxes and even one year road tax. That means full transparency for the customer – he can check the Spanish market to see if there is a better offer, but I doubt there is, with the high level of convenience and security that I offer!
Marketplace: Why should people buy a nearly new second hand car from Germany? Jürgen: There are several reasons: Firstly, the nearly new 2nd hand car market is much bigger than here in Spain – this gives you the opportunity to choose nearly any colour or specification. Secondly, the cars are, like in the UK, much better looked after. All my cars have a gapless service history and are non-smokers cars and the mileage is guaranteed. Thirdly, the cars are in much better condition, e.g. the paint or the headlights because of less sun, or the whole chassis, because of the better roads – I’m sure, 99% of the SUVs in Germany have never seen a campo track! Marketplace: What about the payment? Jürgen: The payment has to be made in advance to my bank account, after signing the buying and service contract. If you are paying from, for example, the UK, you can use our partner Currencies Direct and pay through them into my bank account. I don’t take cash. I keep the customer up to date about the status by email and they can call me any time. Whoever wants may have a copy of my passport as well. I have nothing to hide and I don’t want to rip anybody off. To those who only trust big companies: remember what happened in 2008! Marketplace: What should people do when they are interested in purchasing a car from you? Jürgen: Just go to the contact section on my website, www.autoagent.es, and send me an email with your idea of the car and specifications you are thinking about. I’ll call you back within 24 hours. Marketplace: What additional services do you offer? Jürgen: I can also offer a car insurance, for which I have negotiated a 20% discount for my customers. Marketplace: Thank you Jürgen. It certainly sounds as if you will make, what is an important decision for many people, a much simpler and less mystifying process.

Manish's Zodiac predictions - April Manish Kumar Arora, K.P. Astrologer, Numerologist, Tarot Card Reader & Vastu Consultant Facebook: manishastroconsultant email: manish@manishastrologer.com Aries ( 21 March – 19 April )
Your intuition is strong, acting as your guide, and your dreams are powerful. You’re open to new people and new experiences, and you take pleasure in learning about the world. This period can give you opportunities to achieve your goals, pursue new goals, meet the right people, and strive for more in your life. You can be more affectionate, romantic, and enjoy being in a relationship.
Taurus ( 20 April – 20 May )
This period gives you opportunities to have new experiences, try new things, expand your life and mind, go out into the world, broaden your horizons, and be in an optimistic mood. Love becomes more about the emotional bonds that you share and you want a connection that’s emotional first, before it’s anything else. Look for the best opportunities instead, and the attention will come to you down the road.
Gemini ( 21 May – 20 June)
You enjoy focusing on serious matters, getting to the heart of the matter, investigating, transforming yourself or some part of your life, and connecting deeply with others. You can become more involved in a cause you believe in, or walk away from one. You can make progress with a future dream, or feel that you need to let it go. You may have a strong desire to expand your home or family at this time.
Cancer ( 21 June – 22 July )
You may come across as warmer, friendlier, or prouder. Your feelings can cause you to do great things, or to completely fall apart. If you can harness your emotional energy, you can accomplish a great deal. You can have a hard time seeing how to make the transformations that you want to make, or dealing with other people’s money (debts, taxes, loans, inheritances, joint finances).
Leo ( 23 July – 22 August )
You can pursue great new opportunities, have a positive attitude, and start a new journey in your life that is ever lasting. You crave an emotional connection and a strong emotional bond. If in a relationship, you work on improving the emotional ties between both of you. You can spruce up your home, make a move, have a real estate transaction, plan a family gathering, or try to connect with your family better.
Virgo ( 23 August – 22 September )
You can try things that are different from the norm, and come up with unusual solutions to problems. You can improve your existing relationships, enter into a new partnership, commit yourself to something, make a compromise, strike a balance, or bring some peace into your life. This is also a good time for you to take up a cause and work on helping the world in some way. 28 THE MARKET PLACE
Libra ( 23 September – 22 October )
You may come across as more realistic, strongwilled, or deep. You can tackle more serious matters now, and don’t find them quite as daunting to deal with. You will see patterns that nobody else seems able to discern, and this will give you a major leg up in your dealings with competitors. Passion can be higher this month, and you want a physical connection more than a mental or emotional one.
Scorpio ( 23 October – 21 November )
You find it easier to try things that are completely outside of your comfort zone, and are willing to be true to who you are, even if it’s really out there. The period will force you to take more care about the people you hook up with. If you are in an unhappy relationship, you will find a way to disengage yourself from it.
Sagittarius ( 22 November -21 December ) This can be a great time for making a good impression on the right people, making connections that will help you get to where you need to go, and charming everyone you need to. This is a good period for you creatively and artistically, and if you have children, you can get along with them better. Diets and plans to cut back on self-destructive habits are easier to implement this month.
Capricorn ( 22 December – 19 January ) You can feel more like your true self, and are willing to go outside of the box and be a little different if it means getting what you want. You can benefit from being a rebel or from being more eccentric. You need to work on striking a balance between work and play, and create some harmony in your life so you feel good.
Aquarius ( 20 January – 18 February )
You may come across as more charming, fair, or mediating. You get rewarded for the hard and smart work you’ve done, and can start to create the home and family life you’ve always wanted, and have a strong internal foundation. You’ll need to have less baggage to carry around as you have new responsibilities that pop up in your life. It is best time for making the transition into a new job or career.
Pisces ( 19 February – 20 March )
This can be a month where you love things more than people, and want to surround yourself with beautiful objects and lovely spaces. It tends to signal a time of endings, culminations, and things coming to fruition. You can be driven by your emotions, and what you feel pushes you to do something or nothing. You may come across as more emotional, comforting, or sensitive.

Health, Body & Soul Love your life more with advice on how to lead a healthy lifestyle
The secret of slow ageing
5 day detox for your skin Yeah it sucks, but trust us - if you can do it for 5-7 days, it’s worth it. We're only going to list a few of the reasons why this will help the appearance of your skin, but trust us there is actually a very long list of negative effects a high sugar diet has on the skin. A high sugar diet, and alcohol consumption causes inflammation, redness, and patchy skin tone. It can contribute to skin conditions such as rosacea, it exacerbates acne and it can lead to collagen breakdown and premature ageing. Cutting out refined sugars and alcohol is probably the single most effective way to detox your skin. Sometimes it kills us not having a snap of chocolate after dinner or a cheeky mid-week wine, but by cutting out high sugar food and drinks you'll see less redness, a more even skin tone and less puffiness in just 2-3 days.
The diet that cured acne A young lady's life was transformed when she changed her diet and quit taking medication for her extreme acne. Rachel Crawley, 22 years old from Preston, went from being called "disease face" to a beauty queen. She gave up on her medication and overhauled her eating habits, crediting her new diet for clearing her skin for good. A high fat, vegan, plant based diet with no processed foods only real whole foods and a natural minimal skincare routine. She says that people are happy to take strong medication that can lead to bad side effects in their bodies but aren't willing to change their diet which is safer and better for our health.
34 THE MARKET PLACE
Some clever doctors have discovered you actually have more control over your own ageing than you may imagine. It’s called the telomere effect – and it’s about keeping healthier for longer. Molecular biologist Elizabeth Blackburn shared a Nobel Prize for her research on telomeres - structures at the tips of chromosomes that play a key role in cellular ageing (stay with us here, we'll explain) and along with psychologist Elissa Epel, she’s published her findings in her book The Telomere Effect: A Revolutionary Approach to Living Younger, Healthier, Longer. It helps if you think of your chromosomes – which carry your genetic material – as shoelaces. Telomeres, then are the little protective tips at the end that stop them from unravelling. Because this analogy is so fun, let’s continue it – unravelling = ageing. And the usual suspects – exercise, sleep, stress and diet – affect how fast old mother time moves in. Here’s a snapshot of four easy ways to hack your DNA and slow ageing, because we’re good like that. Tiny tweaks, major pay off,
or maybe just the clean living reinforcement you need.
Exercise moderately The good news is you don’t have to spend your life on a spin bike or run a marathon a month. Moderate exercisers – those who workout about three times a week for 45 minutes – have telomeres pretty much as long as marathon runners. It also pays to mix your moves up like an Oscars envelope – one study cited in the book showed the more different kinds of exercise people did, the longer their telomeres.
Deal with stress Depression, anxiety, trauma? The conclusion is that stress shortens telomeres. The authors recommend addressing your problems or dealing with chronic stress through therapy, medication, exercise, or whatever your jam. Plus, having good relationships helps. Bring on that weekend walk and talk with your mates.
Keep it clean You know this already for your waistline, but now when you eye up that donut, think of your poor old telomeres. Foods high in antioxidants (berries, kale, nuts to name a few), omega-3s (seafood, chia seeds, soybeans, spinach) and fibre (veg, veg and more veg), are all shown to significantly grow telomeres. Repeat after us: wholefoods good, highly refined white bread and co. bad.
Sleep for seven Sleep deprivation does more than make you irritable, it triggers damage in your DNA. So instead of staying up late watching Netflix with your hydrating sheet mask, do your bit the old-fashioned way and get seven hours of shut eye. Seems reasonable.
Walking or swimming... not running! Pounding the pavement with long runs or lots of box jumps is not exactly kind to knees ankles or hips. Thats why it is very important to include some lower impact exercise into your routine. Going for a swim or walk is really healthy and not so strenuous on your muscles, bones and ligaments!!
Deep Sleep Saviour
Listening to meditative music just before going to sleep can improve your quality of sleep, make you fall asleep quicker and is something easy you can try.

In February, Colin Baglin, a retired nuclear engineer living in Torrox Málaga visited our class. He chose an interesting topic to talk about, totally different from something an engineer would normally do, and we were surprised but not in an unpleasant way. He talked about the relationship between languages and history, and later I was allowed to ask him a few questions about his life and his career. I first decided to ask him about the decision to talk about the above-mentioned topic, since it was kind of unusual, but he explained that he was very interested in both history and language, so he enjoyed talking about it. Secondly, I was curious about his chosen career, and asked him what made him become a nuclear engineer. He said that, in that time, it was something pretty new and when he joined a company, it caught his attention, and decided to make a life out of it. 40 THE MARKET PLACE
He also said that one thing he enjoyed about his job was visiting new places, and it forced me to ask the reason he came to Spain. The answer was quite simple; it was his love for travelling and the lovely climate we have here. They arrived; they liked it, and decided to stay. It was very nice having him in our class, although it would have been nice to listen to him talking about other topics he enjoyed, such as
global warming and what can we do to change it. He has written several books, both non-fiction and fiction, including some about this subject. He is a very interesting person, and we are glad he decided to spend some time with us, sharing his expertise.

The vital role of food preservatives An ancient practice designed to prevent spoilage, among the first food preservation practices were the salting of meat and fish, adding sugar in canned foods and pickling vegetables. Today, preservatives continue this important role. Definition
Food preservatives play a vital role in preventing deterioration of food, protecting against spoilage from mould, yeast, lifethreatening botulism and other organisms that can cause food poisoning. Preservatives reduce food cost, improve convenience, lengthen shelf life and reduce food waste.
Functions, Names and Labeling There are two modes of preservation: physical and chemical. Physical preservation refers to processes such as refrigeration or drying. Chemical preservation is adding ingredients to a food for the purpose of preventing potential damage from oxidation, rancidity, microbial growth or other undesirable changes - and is considered a “direct additive.” Both natural preservatives (for example, from lemon juice, salt and sugar) and artificial preservatives are classed as “chemical preservatives.” While many common preservatives occur naturally, manufacturers often use synthetic versions of these chemicals. Artificial preservatives can be divided into 3 major groups: 1) Antimicrobial agents destroy bacteria or inhibit the growth of mould on foods: n
Benzoates – the salts of benzoic acid
n Sorbates – sorbic acid and its three mineral salts, potassium sorbate, calcium sorbate and sodium sorbate n
Propionates – the salts of propionic acid
n
Nitrites – the salts of nitrous acid
2) Antioxidants inhibit oxidation: n Sulfites – a group of compounds containing charged molecules of sulfur compounded with oxygen, including sodium sulfite, sodium bisulfite, sodium metabisulfite, potassium bisulfite and potassium metabisulfite n Vitamin E (tocopherol) – a fat-soluble vitamin n Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) – a water-soluble vitamin and its salts, sodium ascorbate, calcium ascorbate and potassium ascorbate n Butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA) – a waxy solid used to preserve butter, lard, meats and other foods n Butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT) – similar in structure and function to BHA, but in powder form. 42 THE MARKET PLACE
3) Chelating agents bind metal ions in certain foods to prevent oxidation: n Disodium ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) – used in food processing to bind manganese, cobalt, iron or copper ions n Polyphosphates – used as anti-browning agents in dips and washes for peeled fruits and vegetables n
Citric acid – found naturally in citrus fruits
All preservatives added to food products must be declared on the ingredient list on the food label using common names of ingredients. When no such name exists, synthetic forms can be listed. For example, synthetic vitamin B9 can be listed as “folic acid.”
Safety According to the regulatory authorities, preservatives are generally recognised as safe, in the quantities in which they are allowed in individual food products. “Safe” for food additives is defined to mean “a reasonable certainty in the minds of competent scientists that the substance is not harmful under the intended conditions of use.” Still, there are some preservatives of concern. Sodium nitrate used in processed meats is an example of compounds that may increase the potential of these foods to cause cancer. Studies have linked eating large amounts of processed meats with an increased risk of colorectal cancer. Sodium benzoate and sulfites appear to be safe for most people, but may cause adverse reactions in others. A 2007 study published in The Lancet suggests sodium benzoate and artificial food colourings may exacerbate hyperactivity in young children. Butylated hydroxyanisole, or BHA, is listed as reasonably anticipated to be a human carcinogen and butylated hydroxytoulene, or BHT, has been banned in some countries but has not been shown conclusively to be carcinogenic.
Final Thought To be clear, a diet awash with processed foods may contain excessive preservatives - both artificial and natural (think salt and sugar) - and should be limited. But preservatives within the context of an overall healthful diet help safeguard food and protect consumer health. "Removing preservatives compromises food safety, and there is no good scientific reason to avoid them,” says Robert Brackett, PhD, director of the Institute for Food Safety and Health. He used nitrates as an example: “The risk of getting botulism from processed meats far outweighs the risk of the preservative especially when consumed in moderation.” Nonetheless, emerging technological innovations aimed at replacing traditional preservatives are in the works. Development of technologies such as high-pressure processing and ultrasonic preprocessing with pulsed light are promising - and may yield additional benefits such as reduced water usage, energy efficiency and improved food quality.

Fellowship of The King Film & Tapas Evening The final offering in the present season of popular Film & Tapa evenings at FTK in Nerja will be screened at 7.30pm on Friday 7th April at FTK’s premises in Pasaje San Miguel (around the corner from the main Mercadona.) “Risen” is a brand new drama in which Joseph Fiennes turns in a superbly convincing and engaging performance as Clavius, a loyal and intrepid Roman Tribune in Judea, in the year 33 A.D. He was dispatched by the Roman district governor, Prefect Pontius Pilate (played by Peter Firth) to locate the body of one Yeshua (played by Cliff Curtis) who had just been executed, but whose body was reported to have disappeared from his burial tomb. With rumours rampant among the subjugated Judean people, Pilate feared that this incident would further incite insurrection among the Judeans, and as the Emperor Tiberius Caesar was shortly to visit the area he desperately needed calm to be restored if his already chequered career was not to come to an abrupt end. Joseph Fiennes’ portrayal of Clavius anchors the film as he plays the Tribune with authenticity, honesty, and an openness that enables the sceptical to put themselves in his place, so dedicated was he to proving this was all a hoax. Indeed, the screenplay recounts the events of the first Easter in a unique way, for it tells the story through the eyes of a non-believer, and thus adds a whole new dimension to the film; Flavius declared, “I have seen two things which I cannot reconcile: A man dead without question, and that same man alive again.” This triggered a journey and a quest on his part to try and reconcile in his mind where exactly the truth lay even though his investigation would fundamentally challenge his heretofore rock solid world. As the film unfolds we watch him turn detective as he finds the need to sift Maro Map Spot 2
the evidence. The story progresses at a steady pace and a good soundtrack makes the film a good viewing experience. Although it deals with a religious theme it does not fall into the twin traps of becoming too cheesy or too “in your face” for a mainstream audience. Sure, there are some religious aspects to the story, but it never makes the viewer feel like they are being preached to. Why not join us for an evening of movie, wine, tapas, friendship - and nothing to pay? More information on 952 969 058. Leslie Thomas.

Many of these have required hand rearing and we are so grateful to the volunteers who have taken them into their homes for it is not possible Joe and Roberto for puppies that have not been inoculated to be put in 3 month old puppies the Refuge. Why, oh why, will owners of both sexes of dogs, not have their animals castrated for then within a very short space of time, a matter of a few years, the problem would be diminished to a large extent. A side problem of taking in so many puppies is that in a few months when we are desperately looking to find loving homes for them it makes our home checks even more difficult for everyone loves a puppy but we have to be sure that they will also be loved when they grow up. When a family arrive at the Refuge they make so much fuss of the youngsters but ever so sadly walk by the older probably longer term residents who would make the most companionable of friends. Nothing would make me happier than to see all the older boys and girls adopted before letting in any other dogs!! TAIL BUDDIES are having an Easter Breakfast at La Cervecera, Edf Balcones del Mar 1, Paseo Maritimo, El Morche. Please telephone Agnes on 658 594729 for reservation before 14th April. If it is as successful as the groups lunch/ dinners a great time will be had by all. Another date which everyone enjoys is our spring dog show which is to be held on 22nd April at the romeria ground Torrox Costa. Keep your eyes open our poster giving up to date information.
C.A.S. (Costa Animal Society) Happy Tales Carmen is a little female Chihuahua mix who is about ten years old. She was living rough in an overturned black bucket in a parking area of San Juan de Capistrano in Nerja for several weeks during the December rain storms. She was rescued by a Costa Animal Society (CAS) volunteer with the help of several Swedish ladies who live in the urbanisation. Carmen’s history is unknown but her timid nature around people makes it clear she has gone through some tough times. After spending several weeks in kennels Carmen was taken in by a foster family who wanted to give her more one on one attention to work on her trust issues. Carmen’s story has taken a wonderful turn in that the fosterers fell in love with her quirky nature and have decided to adopt her. Pablo is a Spanish Mastin cross who was found wandering in traffic on the busy Frigiliana Road, narrowly dodging oncoming cars, one Friday afternoon. He was so tired he fell asleep inside the back of the rescuer’s car on the way to the 48 THE MARKET PLACE
vet surgery and again during the examination. The vet thinks Pablo had been chasing a female in heat, probably for several days, to the point of exhaustion (been there, done that) but was otherwise found to be a young healthy male. Pablo was taken to kennels for shelter where he slept for 24 hours straight before he woke up and ate a meal. Even though he was in good health Pablo was quite thin for his size, weighing only 34 kilos when he should have been well over 40 kilos. Over the following six weeks he was vaccinated and castrated and the kennels gave him extra rations until he gained an additional ten kilos. Pablo was eventually seen on the CAS website, casnerja. org, by a nice English couple who have taken him on a trial adoption. We are confident Pablo will put his best paw forward and win the couple’s heart and a forever place for himself in their home. Canela was found wandering the streets of Nerja by a Spanish family who took her in. The mother of the family took her to a local vet but, as is so often the case, there was no microchip. The lady kept Canela for three weeks but no owner came forward and nothing was seen on social media about a lost Jack Russell dog. Unfortunately, the reality of caring for an active dog and three young children in a small flat without a garden proved to be too difficult. The mother turned to CAS for help and, as fate would have it, we were contacted the same day by a lady looking to adopt a Jack Russell type because hers had recently passed away. She came to see Canela at the kennels and it was love at first sight, a wonderful thing to witness, both for Canela and for her new mom.
Ready for Adoption Puppy and kitten season is in full swing and CAS took in nine puppies in less than a week in the middle of last month. Like the other local animal charities we are bursting at the seams and are in need of fosterers to help manage the additional burden. continued on page 50

CAS Shop News What better way to help the Costa Animal Society (CAS) than to help yourself. Why not do a spring cleaning and thin out those heaving wardrobes. The CAS shop is always accepting donations of ladies’, men’s and children’s clothing. How about the cupboards, bookcases and garage as well? From linen to accessories, books to DVDs, bric-á-brac, electrics and small pieces of furniture, all items are welcome. And while you’re at it you can peruse the shop with its large inventory of clean, well-presented goods sure to find fantastic bargains for the whole family. The newly re-located shop is situated at No. 2 calle Castilla Perez in Nerja, next door to Good Stuff Café. Opening hours are from 10.00am until 2.00pm, Monday to Saturday, excluding bank holidays. The telephone number is 689 314 350. Please note: the CAS shop will be closed April 13-15 for Easter holiday.
We think they are French Bulldog crosses but will be quite small when full grown as Buddy weighs just about two kilos at ten weeks old. Bindi is a little larger but will also be a small female. Ready for Adoption Tiger Lily and Princess are two neutered young adult females who have only known life together and would love a home together if at all possible. Tiger Lily is the really outgoing, friendly and affectionate one while Princess is more careful and timid. They were happily living together with their human family when the family was evicted from their rental property and just left them behind. They are now living alone in the grounds and basement of the former family home being fed by kindly neighbours. Tiger Lily and Princess would love to return to the comfort and company of living with a loving family. If you could love these two, please contact (+44) 7795 522 550 or email costaanimalsociety@mail.com. They are in Nerja. 50 THE MARKET PLACE

was once a sleepy fishing village but now the town has a population of over 21,000. The Balcón de Europa is a magnificent promenade that was made famous by King Alfonso XII , who’s statue now takes pride of place at the far end. Close by is the 17th century Church of El Salvador, and the beautiful gardens of Capistrano Playa. The town boasts an active Centro de Cultura, and a new attraction is The Fuente de Europa in Verano Azul Park, which is a very impressive monument, made from pieces of stone donated from EU member states. There are many beaches to be found either side and in front of the town, including Burriana with its numerous cafés and restaurants. Here too, you can take advantage of the water sports on offer, including water skiing, scuba diving and sailing. Just outside Nerja on the coast road towards Maro is a very impressive aquaduct which used to supply the local sugar factory, but is now used to carry water to local farms.

Torre del Mar
is just 30 minutes from Malaga, and is the beach resort of Velez Málaga. Its population of 21,000 grows between June and September to 150,000. The towns attractions have expanded over the last few years to cope with the demand, and now the four kilometres of beach have been enhanced by an impressive promenade, which stretches all the way to Caleta de Vélez, a port providing over 200 berths and offering sailing and water sports. Throughout the summer, there are many Chiringuitos on the beach, serving fresh barbequed fish and ice cold beers. In 2002, Paseo de Larios was pedestrianized, and is now a tranquil promenade, with plenty of pavement cafés and restaurants. At the seafront end of Larios is a line of bars and discos which continue throughout the night on Fridays and Saturdays. The history of Torre is uncertain, but it is thought that it might have been part of an ancient Greek settlement, known as Mainake, which was destroyed by the Carthaginians. Tombs of the Carthaginians were found at the mouth of the river Velez. More recently, it was a small fishing village until major development began in the 1970’s.

La Herradura
nestles between the Punta de la Mona to the east and the rock of Cerro Gordo to the west. The bay enjoys shelter from west winds creating mostly crystal-clear waters, and is a popular location for water sports & paragliding. There are numerous beach bars and restaurants serving specialities of the region, including tropical salads, fresh fish or paella. The Marina del Este near La Herradura is tucked betwen Punta de la Mona to the west and Cotobro to the east. It boasts a beautiful port, elegantly designed to incorporate select shops, art galleries, bars and restaurants. This small strip of coast also claims to be the best place to dive between Almeria and Gibraltar, and is home to one of the areas leading diving schools.

Lake Viñuela
is a 15 minute drive from the N340 Autovia, leaving at the junction for Velez Malaga. Head inland along the A356; this direction also leads to numerous inland white villages. The first turning on our map is to Benamocarra, which is sign posted to the right after the last roundabout into Velez Malaga. This road will take you back over the main road and then also on to Iznate, and divides to take you to Almachar, El Borge and Cutar. The second turning off the A356 is on the right (after the Repsol garage) to Trapiche. Continue on the A356, and immediately you will see another junction on the left, sign posted to Benamargosa, Triana, Comares and Cutar. This road will also take you as far as Rio Gordo (for a scenic drive). There is a popular Spanish bar on the corner of this junction called El Cruz. Back on the A356, continue on and you will pass another junction on the right, to Canillas de Aceituno, and finally you will see Lake Vinuela in front of you. Turn right before the lake for Puente de Don Manuel, Alcaucin, Viñuela and Periana; carry straight on for Los Romanes, Rio Gordo and Colmenar.

Frigiliana
encompass 39.74 sq km within which live just over 3,000 people year round. Frigiliana is a popular tourist destination, and because there are many holiday homes here, the population triples during the summer months. The history of Frigiliana dates from prehistoric times. The village has been inhabited by numerous civilisations from the Phoenicians and Romans to the Arabs, who had the greatest impact on the town’s development. During the Christian reconquest, Frigiliana was the site of numerous battles culminating in the famous battle of the Rock of Frigiliana in 1569 which ended in the complete expulsion of the Moorish people. One can learn the history of this struggle by walking through the streets of the historic section where there are a series of twelve ceramic plaques posted about which explain the entire story.
