Improvement in the housing sector will continue during 2015, supported by a "solid foundation" as the flow of credit and price growth continues, according to analyst Research Department of Banco Santander, Tomas Ries. 5 Keys to a Successful House Reform

buy property in Spain?

The average price of private housing fell by 0.3% in 2014, for the seventh consecutive year, according to data Development. Projections are that this year prices will be maintained and that there will be some stability, marked especially by the increasing acquisition of property by foreigners in the Spanish property market. According to the latest report by the Association of Registrars, home purchases by foreigners reached a new record high at the end of last year and are already five consecutive years of growth that lead to a period of strong recovery and confidence in the real estate market. In general, most of these foreign investors are tourists who come to spend holiday periods in Spain and, after visiting the country, decide to invest in a second home. According to a study by TM Real Estate Group, the main motivations for buying are; good quality of life, the sun and good air links with their country of origin. 6 THE MARKET PLACE

The Village of

Almachar

"West of Vélez, Almáchar is an exquisite little village of tumbling houses and winding streets, best explored on foot. Leave your car at the top of the town near what used to be the old bus shelter, and head down C. Eugenia Rios. In spring and summer, the town is a riot of colours, with flowers spilling from every balcony, patio and window box (look at the plaques dotted about town, commemorating individual streets for their displays)"

mbitious youngsters from the smaller villages of the Axarquía dream of living in Almáchar. “When I grow up” they say “I’m going to get a motorbike and take off down the road ‘til I reach Almáchar”. In Almáchar there are pizzas and bingo. And a discotheque in summer. Almáchar is a Moorish “white village”. Its size however - about two thousand people at the last count - often gives it the feel of a bustling little town. With four or five general stores, two butchers, a fresh fishmonger, a bakery, farmers warehouse, a co-operative for processing and selling fruit, two banks, a weekly market, shops that sell “a little bit of everything” plus several bars and a restaurant, - you the sense that you can get more or less all you need here if you know where to look. An arts centre, health centre, theatre, gallery, flamenco bar and swimming pool cater for the higher things in life.

There are no gutters or drains on the houses so during the infrequent downpours, water pours straight off the rooftops to flash flood the little valleys and make the concrete streets impassable. And why are the shops anonymous? Because everyone knows where they are. Almáchar is above all a community of people who know each other, so if you don’t know where the seamstress or the hairdresser lives, you’ll know someone who does. No need to advertise, because each shop is a personal relationship.

The initial village settlements were made on the river bank, where there are a multitude of springs and abandoned washing stations. Older villagers still collect water from their favourite spring. The roofs were clad in rounded clay tiles and the house designed around an interior patio.

In this festival, visitors can taste this wonderful dish (cold soup with garlic and almonds) and other culinary delights of the area. The festival of the city patron saint, Our Lady of Amparo, takes place in July, and here the people of the city and surrounding areas to the streets day and night to participate and enjoy the full range of works music, dance and sports. The festival in honour of Santo Cristo de la Banda Verde is on the first weekend in May. Its origins date back to 1754 when, according to local legend, Christ's divine intervention prevented the destruction of the city by a series of earthquakes. Christ was named protector of the city. Santo Cristo is raised high on a “tronos” and paraded round the streets, accompanied by marching bands and fireworks, with crowds of local people in procession. The Romeria of San Isidro also takes place in May.

Registering your vehicle in Spain

Spanish license plates and registration document. Registering a non-Spanish vehicle in Spain is a complex and potentially costly procedure. However, you may be exempt from Spanish registration tax by getting Spanish number plates within one month of entering the country. But to do this, you need to become a resident. Linea Directa has been insuring expat drivers in Spain for over a decade and understands all the steps involved. Below we outline this process. STEP 1: OBTAINING A CERTIFICATE OF CONFORMITY This is a statement by the car’s manufacturer that it conforms to EU regulations. You will need the car’s chassis number to complete this straightforward process online at www.eurococ. eu/en/certificate_of_conformity. The charges for this service will vary according to type of vehicle, make and country of 1st registration. STEP 2: CURRENT LOG BOOK The vehicle’s original log book showing your name as the owner, the vehicles age and a valid UK address. You will also need the bill of sale for the car. STEP 3: RESIDENCY IN SPAIN The Spanish residency certificate (Certificado de Empadronamiento) is your official proof of residency in Spain. Your local town hall can provide you with this document. You will need to take your passport and proof of Spanish address (rental contract, contract to purchase or property deeds). STEP 4: OBTAINING A SPANISH MOT CERTIFICATE All vehicles over 4 years old must be roadworthy and clearly display a valid ITV sticker. The ITV (Vehicle Technical Inspection) must be tested at an authorised centre, just as for

16 THE MARKET PLACE

161

an MOT test. You can find out the location of your nearest ITV centre on DGT website (equivalent to the DVLA). You can also call your local centre to make a booking. If the centre is busy, especially pre-summer, this can save a lot of time. The cost can vary but generally is around 40E for petrol-engine cars and 56E for diesel-engine cars. Step 5: OBTAINING A SPANISH EQUIVALENT OF A TAX DISC The Spanish Tax Agency can provide your vehicle with a valid “tax disc” for Spain, which must be carried in the car when in use. You will need to complete the relevant form online and pay the amount according to your car’s tax band. You can carry out all these procedures yourself or you can seek the assistance of an accountant to do this for you.

Ford Mondeo 1.6 Duratorq ECOnetic Titanium TDCi 115ps

The all-new Mondeo seems to have been a long time coming; it seems like years ago that we first saw the photographs of this new, much advanced car. But it is only now that we have had the chance to get our hands on a real one, rather than just look at images of it.

M

ost things have changed with the new Mondeo, except the name. Even the country within which they are built has changed, European market versions will be built in Spain as opposed to Belgium. There will be an all-wheel drive version, and a 1.0 litre EcoBoost petrol engine will be available. The car we had on test was a Titanium model, which is the second from the top of the range, and it also had a few options fitted including privacy glass, panoramic roof, active park assist, active city stop and the new option, inflatable seat belts (although we didn’t get chance to use these so not entirely sure what they are, but they are presumably an inflatable seat belt which help reduce injuries in a crash). This particular car should have had 17 inch alloy wheels fitted according to the manufacturer’s standard specification sheet that was in the car, but in fact it had 16 inch wheels fitted due to it being the Econetic version and the small wheels did look a bit lost in the wheel arches. The 1.6 TDCi engine is a sweet engine, and has more than enough power, although this engine is only a temporary fitment to the Mondeo, as it is being replaced in most European markets later this year with a 1.5 litre TDCi engine. The official combined fuel consumption figure for the 1.6 is 78.5 mpg, but during the time we had the car, it achieved 48.3mpg; which is still a pretty good result for such a large car. On a motorway trip, it got up to nearly 56mpg but like most cars we test, nowhere near the official quoted numbers. The new Mondeo looks splendid on the road; the front end with that huge new grille looks fantastic, and really makes it look bold and different. The side swage lines

18 THE MARKET PLACE

have moved from above the door handles, they now run from the headlights at the front, through the door handles and finish up in the rear light cluster. The bonnet has four strong design lines running from the windscreen to almost the front edge of the bonnet and this gives it a purposeful and aggressive stance. The exterior really could not be improved on; it is a classic in the making. The interior has also moved up a gear. In fact, probably a couple of gears as the level of refinement and quality have moved up to German premium levels. The fit and finish of all materials and components used is much improved over the previous Mondeo, or any other current Ford product for that matter. They really have gone all out, spending the time and money making this car even better. The luggage area is massive; 500 litres with the seats up and 1605 litres with the rear seats folded down. But having such a large boot does have its disadvantages too. The rear parcel shelf kept coming off its fastenings, and appeared to have a mind of its own. The fasteners are so far away from the rear of the car that reaching them is almost impossible - unless your arms are four feet long. Therefore you have to re-attach the parcel shelf from the rear seat, and then it is not easy, as you attach one side then the other, and by the time you have done one side, the other has 'popped out'. The rear parcel shelf on the hatch does need a bit more thinking about, as in real life situations it was a bit of a pain. The new Mondeo is the first model to be built on Fords new global CD segment platform. It also has Fords new integral link rear suspension configuration, for improved refinement alongside more dynamic performance. The cabin is very quiet, almost eerily quiet, as there is hardly any road, engine or wind noise. Ford says the noise reduction is down by 3 decibels in the rear and 2 decibels in the front. This has primarily been achieved by improving the door mirror shape, enhanced door and window seals, additional sound deadening materials in the underbody shields and new wheel arch liners and front and rear to help block tyre noise. The number of holes within the body shell has been reduced to minimise noise transfer. All these small changes have added up to a good reduction in noise levels. The new 8’’ touch screen is very intuitive and easy to use. It operates the phone, in-car entertainment, climate and navigation systems. It looks good and works well, such a nice bit of kit, with clever operation, and obviously a lot of thought has gone into making it user-friendly. The 1.6 litre diesel engine on the test car produced 115bhp and accelerated from standstill to 62mph in 12.1 seconds. It was coupled to a very nice and smooth 6 speed manual gearbox and had very low CO2 emissions at just 94g/km. The all new Spanish built Mondeo is of a very high standard, has oceans of interior space for five adults, the boot is enormous and there is a good level of standard equipment. The version we had on test cost £22,995.00 OTR without the options and looks good value, although when you add in the options that were fitted it increased to £25,165.00 OTR. Ford are hoping to woo many current German brand drivers over to the blue oval badge, and some will be attracted by the new look and improved quality, but many won't because as good as it is, it is still a Ford, and many won't want to say goodbye to their statement-making premium badges in favour of a Ford. A sad fact, but true.

It may become chlorotic (yellow) on alkaline soils. It is not as drought-tolerant as Bermuda grass or Zoysia. It is easily damaged by low temperatures and traffic, so is not suitable for a fine lawn, but is acceptable as a low-maintenance grass for light traffic only.

This forms a fine, if slow-growing turf which can be slow to establish and also to recover from wear and tear. Thorough weed control is therefore necessary. It makes a good low-maintenance choice, as it grows slowly so needs less frequent mowing than other species.

Improvements to your soil: Enrich your soil by adding rock dust which adds trace elements to it or kelp extract which adds vitamins, plant growth hormones and minerals that bolster the strength of plants and help your lawn fight off mid-summer stress. Also, make sure to always use PH. Experts recommend a palletized, calcitic lime to lower soil acidity. Chromebook Pixel 2 quietly appears

Apple’s new Macbook was one of the bigger announcements of the week however Google are quietly popping out an updated Chromebook Pixel 2, the second in what is now a line of top end notebooks flavoured with Chromebookiness. There seems to be one big feature being pushed here and that’s the charging method and USB -C port. Bragging that the Pixel 2 can last 2 hours on 15 minutes of charging is quite a feat alongside the Intel i5 2.2ghz or i7 2.4ghz. There are better storage options also with 32gb and 64gb choices, who said that Chrome was designed to be online all the time? A big boost for any Chromebook is the RAM, 8gb or 16g, these are honestly good specs even for a Windows laptop and as it is running Chrome it is a little like bringing a M134 minigun to a knife fight. The screen is a beautiful 12.85" display with a webfriendly 3:2 aspect ratio, 2560 x 1700, at 239 PPI. There is also a 720P HD Wide Angle camera with Blue Glass Priced at either £799 or £999, this is a little more affordable than last years model and comes with the remarkable ability to charge the device and plug in an external storage device also… in like another beautiful Notebook we saw this week.

Kitty Harri's Sculpture Garden Interview By: Eva Maria Bock Meyer

Kitty Harri is best known for her bestselling novels (writing as Kitty Sewell). Her two acre Sculpture Garden in Andalucia, Spain, is the culmination of many years of sculpting and planting trees, building walkways and terraces, with a growing ambition to create an Alternative Art Environment. Alongside the 80+ artworks, the gardens are continuously evolving, containing many species of palms, shrubs and trees from around the world. Since when did you have the sculpture garden? My Sculpture Garden has grown over a period of about 12 years, but I did not open to the public until September 2014.

How did you get the idea to create the garden? I went to Art College to study sculpture as a mature student, but at the same time my writing career started to go really well. In my spare time I was still carving stones and making a few sculptures. They ended up in my garden, and people started to notice the garden and tell other people.

How long did you take to create the garden? Once I had decided to open the garden to the public I spent a year organizing the works and creating lovely places to sit, making paths and stairs, and planting more flowers and trees.

How many sculptures are in the garden? How many are yours? Are they changing over time? Right now there are 70 sculptures in the garden and gallery. About 40 of them are mine, the rest are made by about ten other artists from different countries. Three

famous sculptors have donated sculptures to the garden. I also I have a program of “Sculptors in Residence”. I have three sculptors booked in for the next three months, from Sweden, Holland and United States. They will leave sculptures in the garden. I also have a variety of sculptors and painters doing short term exhibitions here.

Is there anything that you would do different today, compared to when you were younger? No, I feel very fulfilled as a person. I have had several interesting careers apart from novelist, including Public Notary, psychotherapist, and syndicated newspaper columnist. I have studied hard and worked hard, but I have also had a lot of fun. I don’t take myself too seriously.

Which artists have an exhibition in your garden at the moment and for When did you discover your talent how long? for art? Right now I have the German sculptor Eva Junger, the Hungarian painter Andras Gyorfi, Finnish photographer Kirsti Jantunen, Dutch sculptor Lieuwke Loth, and Spanish sculptor Antonio Rico Nunez. They leave their work for a minimum of three months.

When and why did you move to this area? Though born in Sweden I lived in Spain as a young teenager. My school years were spent here (in the Canary Islands). I speak fluent Spanish and understand the Spanish way of life. Having lived in Sweden, Canada, England and Wales over my lifetime, it seemed a wonderful roundtrip to come back and live in the Spanish climate and beautiful landscape.

Did you fulfil a dream of yours with the sculpture garden? Not at first. It was other people visiting my home that began to comment on my sculptures and all the interesting trees, plus the amazing views over the mountains and the sea. Everybody said it was a paradise. So one day I saw that this place would bring joy and inspiration to visitors, and provide a wonderful occupation for me for years to come.

Do you have other dreams?

I have always made art in one form or another. It is part of my nature.

When did you start to write? In my 40’s I wrote for various newspapers when I was a psychotherapist, though I had no training in the art of writing. I learned as I went along. Then I decided to write a biography of a man I knew. This was more of a challenge, but the book was published by Penguin and sold many copies.

From where came the ideas for your books? For my first fiction book, (Zeit der Eisbluten) I “borrowed” a dramatic incidence from my own life in the Canadian sub-arctic. It became an international bestseller. My other novels also have incidents and places from my own life.

Are your scuptures a 'side' from other work or is your main business ART? A person can only do so many things in one day, and my art is my main work now. The sculpture garden also needs a lot of upkeep and administration, meeting visitors, and other sculptors forms part of it. Also going on meetings, courses and symposiums is important, to network and learn from others.

I used to dream about becoming a famous novelist. After a lot of hard work I did finally find fame and fortune as a writer. But fame How long you needed to finish does not fill the soul, or make you a happier your last sculpture and which one or better person. Years of sitting in front of was it? a computer did not make me feel good in My last sculpture is a Sphinx, a cheetah body and mind. Sculpting and working in with a human face, jumping off a big rock. the garden, feeling fit and breathing fresh It is built directly in concrete over a metal air makes me far more happy. 26 THE MARKET PLACE

and wire skeleton, and was complicated so it took weeks, slowly building up the body, layer after layer. Usually I work on more than one sculpture at a time. I am carving a 6.5 metre native Canadian totem pole and also working on a couple of marble sculptures as well.

fearless approach to it, not worried about making mistakes. Discipline and hard work has helped me on this road. I have been blessed by good fortune too and I know to be grateful for it.

Is there an artist who set an example for you?

What is, in your opinion, one of the biggest mistakes you can make in life?

Oh, where to start ?!?! Over my life I have been fascinated by one artist after another. Throughout, I think British sculptor Elisabeth Frink probably stands out the most. And Auguste Rodin of course, Bernini… and ….

Not to follow your dreams. So many young people have plans, hopes and aspirations, but how many fulfil them? How sad to waste your life following the expectations of others, or for laziness, apathy or the fear of not succeeding.

Which art/sculpture is your personal favorite?

If you have three wishes, only for you, what do you wish? Continued health and love, and many interesting friends.

Is there anything that you would recommend to a young artist who wants to be successful?

Anthony Gormley’s “Angel of the North” is my current favourite, not least because I finally got to see it at Christmas time. It is a huge sculpture that dominates the skyline and is seen by every driver travelling on the A1 motorway to north England.

From your collection or from someone else? From my own collection it is a 600 kg stone sculpture called Horse and Man, which took me 5 months to carve by hand. This sculpture won an important Art Award in Wales 10 years ago. I am very proud of it.

Depends on how you define success. Anyone wanting to make a living from art or writing has to be prepared to sacrifice a lot. Very hard work, perseverance and discipline are essential because there is much competition. This arises only from passion for the subject. Also, keep learning, and be willing to listen to critique, even if you don’t like it.

Your sculpture garden is also your own garden, so people who come to see your sculptures, they are also your guest? Yes, of course, and I like a chance to chat and make personal contact with my visitors.

How often do you open your garden for guests per week/month? How much is the admission?

We are open every Sunday from 11-5. Also, groups of 4 people or more are welcome by appointment at any other time of the week. I ask a donation of 8 euros per person on I know it sounds very ambitious, but just as in Sundays, 12 euros during the week. I am a Zen garden, I want you to be transported into happy to negotiate this rate with larger groups. a state of calm and contemplation. My garden A glass of wine, beer, juice and some little tapas, or coffee, is included. is not just about art. It’s about natural beauty I hope people will like it so much, they will and an involvement of your senses, sounds, bring their friends, family and visitors back (so touch, smells. I want you to be inspired and many do) and tell others about my garden. refreshed by the experience.

Is there a message you want to give your visitors, walking through your garden with the sculptures?

Modern life is all about rushing around, accomplishing this and that. With a glass of wine (coffee or juice if you are driving) in your hand, please take plenty of time to relax and enjoy every aspect of the garden. Forget your worries for a couple of hours and just sit on one of the many benches in the sun or under the trees, reflect on your life and enjoy the amazing view of the mountain ranges and the sea. Sit in front of “The Universe” and gain a little bit of perspective on taking life too seriously, or have a good laugh at the subtle humour in some of the sculptures. Bring your sketchbook or take some beautiful photographs. Have a game of chess on the giant chessboard in the “Salon without walls” or just wander among the vegetation in the labyrinth of terraces. Let my little paradise be your paradise for a day.

What was your main success? With your sculptures or in private life? I think my main success in life has been my 28 THE MARKET PLACE

Is it better for visitors to contact you before they are coming? Not necessary, but for groups larger than 6, a call or an email is appreciated. For visits during the week, always call or confirm by email. Check www.kittyharri.com before coming, for possible exceptions to opening times and for directions to the garden.

What will be your next project. A book? A sculpture??? Both of course. I never stop. Presently I am writing a book about the garden, containing many beautiful photos by two talented photographers. It is a fun project which I hope will also be of interest to visitors.

Thank you so much for the interview. For more info: www.kittyharri.com

Nerja Mayor proposes the opening of new areas of Caves Two new areas of the Nerja Caves could soon be open to the public says Nerja Mayor Jose Alberto Armijo. The Mayor has put forward a proposal to the President of the Caves to open La Torca and La Mina caves which are currently closed to the public. Expats challenge winter fuel allowance axe. A challenge is being mounted to the UK government’s decision to end winter fuel payments for expats in countries including Spain, that were found to have a higher average annual temperature than the warmest part of the UK. David Burrage, legal advisor to the British Expats Association in Spain, said “The withdrawal of the winter fuel payment is not going to happen.”

Mr Burrage explained they submitted their first challenge to the European Commission (EC) in March last year, but this could not be acted on until the legislation had been laid before Parliament. Since that happened on December 15th, he is now about to go back to the EC and “request they open a dialogue with the UK”.

EAT SEASONABLY.....

Fennel

This month, we shine the spotlight on a lesser-known vegetable that deserves its own spot on stage: fennel. Fennel is related to corriander, carrots, and dill, and all parts of the plant – bulb, stalk, leaves, and seeds – are edible. The plant has a white bulb, green stalk, n Calories : 78 kcal and feathery green fronds. Fennel n Fat : 0.2 g seeds are often found as an ingredient n Carbohydrates : 6.3 g in Indian spice mixes. Fennel can be n Protein: 1.1 g eaten raw or cooked. Raw fennel is n Fibre: 2.7 g crunchy in texture (like celery) and has a taste similar to anise or licorice; when cooked, the vegetable softens and its flavours become sweeter and milder.

Nutritional data for Fennel

Fennel is a great source of Vitamin C, a powerful antioxidant, as well as fibre, folate, potassium, and manganese. Even though manganese is only found in minuscule amounts in the body, it plays a very important role as an activator of many metabolic enzymes.

Ingredients: n n n n n n n n n

2 medium fennel bulbs (with fronds intact) 2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil 3 ounces Gruyere cheese, coarsely grated 1 ounce mascarpone, softened 2 teaspoons oregano, minced 1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes

1 lemon, zested 2 sheets puff pastry, cut into 2" x 5” rectangles salt and pepper to taste

Directions... Serves 4 to 6 1. Preheat oven to 400°F. 2. Thinly slice fennel heads into 1/2 inch slices (lengthwise) and cut each piece in half. Brush each piece of fennel with oil and season with salt and pepper. 3. Heat a grill or grill pan over high heat and lightly grease. Grill fennel for about 3 minutes on each side or until nicely charred and softened. Remove from heat and allow fennel pieces to cool. 4. In a small bowl combine Gruyere, mascarpone, oregano, red pepper flakes, and lemon zest. Season with salt and pepper and mash together with the back of a fork until fully combined. 5. Spread a small amount of the cheese mixture over each piece of puff pastry, leaving the outer 1/4 inch perimeter bare. 6. Top each rectangle of cheese spread puff pastry with a piece of grilled fennel and gently press down. Place each tart onto a baking sheet, lined with parchment, and lightly season with salt and pepper. Bake for 15 to 20 minutes or until the fennel begins to caramelize and the puff pastry turns golden brown. 7. Allow to cool for 5 minutes before cutting and serving. 34 THE MARKET PLACE

Use your personal charm to chase money this month, Taurus. Your career world remains a minefield through the month with temperamental bosses and peer pressure. Be diplomatic and careful with all your professional moves. The month brings travel and more travel. Pick your choice when it comes to choosing between family and profession.

While unexpected or sudden change is not your favorite experience, this month shall see you accumulate so much sameness, so much predictability and, though it may not have felt that way, stability, that you seem to have forgotten how to change. Now, for the time being expect major changes in your professional life. This month you will ride more lightly on your shoulders. New and old contacts will further your career prospects. Old career wishes will come true, new career goals will be formed. Your social life will dim a little, yet you'll meet love at ease. Things are favoured, especially where a relationship enters the picture. Periods of frustration in these zones ends this month. Others treat you with affection, even in business. Seek new horizons in your personal and professional life. Make sure that there are no major hurts or grudges you have against others for now. Wisdom, learning, far travel, social rituals, these bless you through the month, Capricorn. But you have to wait and watch when it comes to career related moves. You could meet frustrations in some areas midmonth - or in paperwork, communications, or scheduling. Done your hat of hard work and enter the arena with renewed vigour and strength. The month holds good promises in your financial life. Relationships fill your life. Be co-operative, diplomatic, seek to merge. See opportunities. Be sure to sidestep opposition. The month ahead will reward Pisceans who relate and give nothing to those who seek independence, withdrawal or dominance. The biggest problem with you is that you dream a lot. Make sure that your dreams take new wings. Go on, soar off to new heights, Pisces.

Teeing it up with the world's most interesting golfer by Samuel Wynne Vaz

Last month I entered a junior golf competition at La Marquesa golf course, Alicante. It was part of the Miguel Ángel Jiménez junior golf circuit and knowing the level of competition I would be up against, which involved junior golfers from all over the country, I went there without any expectations, hoping just to play my best... The day of the competition turned out to be wet and miserable, in complete contrast to the perfect conditions the day before when I had played my practise round. Despite the weather I put together a good round, even with a double bogey on the last hole I managed to card a gross 79, equating to a net 63 after deducting my 14 handicap allowance. I didn't think I had much chance of winning - surely someone would rip the course up? Whatever the outcome I was looking forward to watching the tournament's patron and my golfing hero, Miguel Ángel Jiménez, who would be presenting the winner's trophy and holding a golfing clinic afterwards. Eventually the results were in - I'd carded the joint-lowest gross score of the day, coming second overall - and earned the chance to play with The Legend himself in the Pro-Am tournament the following day!

appearances, including 21 wins. I was a bit apprehensive at the start but Miguel turned out to be every bit as laid back in person as he's reported to be! During the round we talked about his life - he still stays locally at his house in Churriana, Malaga when he's in town. Last year Miguel married his long term girlfriend, Austrian Susanna Styblo, and he admitted to being a great lover of Austrian cuisine. And what about the golf? Miguel showed me how to read greens, stressing the importance of reading the grain direction of the grass. When in town he likes to practice at his Miguel Ángel Jiménez Golf Academy in Torremolinos, recommending the challenging par 3 course to anyone who wants to sharpen their short game. We talked about Augusta - Miguel told me how much he is looking forward to this years Masters. He likes playing Stateside, enjoying both the climate and the courses. A round with Miguel After our round, Miguel spent time talking It was a surreal experience teeing it up alone with me, freely offering great advice alongside a man who has won almost 23 and encouragement. million euros in his 648 European Tour One of the day's highlights was when we

both hit a 5 iron to the par 3 17th hole my shot landing inside the great man's! I had the biggest smile walking towards the green and the memory still brings a smile to my face every time I think of it! All in all, a great experience with one of golf's biggest characters..... muchas gracias, Miguel!

THE MARKET PLACE 43

Film and Tapas Evening at FTK, Nerja The April offering in this year’s “Film & Tapas Evenings” will take place at FTK’s Nerja premises in Pasaje San Miguel (near the main Mercadona) on Friday3rd April at 7.30 pm with the Oscar-nominated Mel Gibson film, “The Passion of the Christ.” We have chosen to show this as the monthly film night for April as it happens to fall on Good Friday. As ever, all are welcome. This 18-rated film, which the Daily Mirror describes as a “profoundly moving masterpiece” depicts the final twelve hours in the life of Jesus of Nazareth; it opens in Gethsemane in the dead of night some hours after the last supper. Jesus prays and is tempted to draw back from his destiny, while his apostles, Peter, James, and John sleep. One of Jesus’ other disciples, Judas Iscariot, accepts a bribe of a month’s wage from the highly politicised Temple priests in Jerusalem, to reveal the whereabouts of his teacher so the priests can covertly send a contingent of guards to arrest Jesus for heresy. When the armed guards arrest Jesus, his followers flee, although one of them, a big fisherman called Peter, follows at a safe distance until he is confronted by some of the spectators who recognize him as being one of Jesus’ followers; he denies even knowing Jesus and ends up running away distraught because of his cowardice. In the meantime, Jesus is severely beaten by the Temple guards and the head priest, Caiaphas, holds a trial despite the objections of some of the other priests who question its legality. They are expelled from the court. When questioned by Caiaphas whether he is the son of God, Jesus replies “I am” and Caiaphas considers this to be sufficient grounds to condemn Jesus to death for blasphemy. A remorseful Judas attempts to return the money in order have Jesus freed, but the priests refuse. Tormented by his guilt, he flees the city and hangs himself at dawn. Caiaphas brings Jesus before Pontius Pilate, the Roman governor of Judea, to be condemned to death. But after questioning Jesus, the Latin-speaking Pilate (who is fluent in Jesus’ native Aramaic language) finds no reason to convict him after he is told by his wife, Claudia, about a bad dream she had the night before about condemning a holy man to death. So instead, Pilate sends Jesus to the court of Roman puppet-king Herod Antipas, as Jesus’ hometown Nazareth was within Herod’s jurisdiction.

Herod returns Jesus to Pilate, who offers to simply chastise him for heresy and then set him free. Indeed, he gives the priests and the crowds the option of freeing Jesus or a violent criminal called Barabbas. To Pilate’s dismay, the hostile crowd demands to have Barabbas freed and Jesus killed. Still attempting to appease the crowd, Pilate has Jesus brutally scourged, but the crowd continues to demand that Jesus be crucified. Faced with a citywide riot, Pilate is left with no choice but to reluctantly order Jesus’ crucifixion. On a hill outside Jerusalem called Golgotha (Aramaic for ‘Hill of Skulls’), Jesus is then crucified with his wrists and feet nailed to the cross. One criminal that is crucified next to him, mocks him for being helpless now and unable to do anything. At mid afternoon, as he hangs from the cross, Jesus prays forgiveness for those who did this to him, and another criminal crucified next to him puts his faith in Jesus. At the request of the priests, who didn’t want their festival weekend spoiled with unfinished executions, Roman soldiers kill the two criminals by breaking their legs; Jesus, however, had already given up his spirit and died, so a soldier speared Jesus just to make sure that he was really dead. The dead Jesus is brought down from the cross and interred, but in the final scene, Jesus then rises from the dead as he leaves the rock-hewn tomb where he was buried although the wounds to his hands, feet and side are still visible. VE Day 2015 - The Royal British Legion Nerja Branch Well here we are almost at Easter and it seems no time since we were celebrating Christmas. When I was younger and people used to say they didn’t know how they ever had time to work I thought they were exaggerating but now I understand completely where they are coming from. That said I can only say how much I enjoy life here in Spain and how grateful I am that I have the opportunity to be here. One of the things which I enjoy so much here is the opportunity to meet people who are committed to helping others, and one of the ways we do it is by being involved in the British Legion whose aim is to raise funds for those men and women who devote their lives to securing freedom and safety for all of us. To many of us this may seem an almost impossible task considering the present state of the world and in particular the unrest in the Middle East and the countries on the other side of the Mediterranean. But whatever the risk we know that our servicemen and women will be doing their duty to try to protect us Many of these heroes have 44 THE MARKET PLACE

recently returned from Afghanistan only to find that they are no longer required, in other words unemployed, and having come home with life changing injuries or psychological conditions will find it extremely difficult to find jobs in civy street. Their contribution and sacrifice should not be unrecognised and in trying to raise money for the RBL we are doing our bit to make life a little easier for them. Our monthly lunches at Al Andalus hotel in Maro, and at Pena Parda in Herradura, allow us the opportunity to meet people, enjoy the camaraderie, partake of good food and wine, and our raffles at these events enable us to raise funds for our branch. Through this fund raising we have been able to support the Personnel Recovery Centre in Edinburgh directly. All monies which are raised for the Poppy Appeal go direct to the RBL Poppy Appeal. At branch level everyone involved gives their time on a voluntary basis. Apart from our monthly lunches we have recently held a coffee morning and craft

fayre which was very successful and raised 900 euros, and the same weekend the Chapel Bar in Nerja donated 200 euros…..a big thank you to everyone who took part or supported these events. Our next venture is our VE celebration dinner dance on the 8th May at the Al Andalus hotel in Maro which is based on events 70 years ago when victory was announced in Europe, marking the end of hostilities. It looks like being a very well attended evening, with entertainment, music of the day, great food, wine, raffle and prizes. We hope that many will take the opportunity to dress according to the time and prizes will be awarded for the best outfit. Tickets will be limited, so don’t delay. Rooms at the hotel will be available at 37.50 euros…… cheaper than a taxi for many of us. So if you fancy an evening of fun and frivolity contact Dave, Nick, or Barry ………….we look forward to you joining us ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,and if not for this, for one of our monthly lunches. You are very welcome. Dorothy Graves, PR Nerja Branch

Health news

Health Fact Women are born better smellers than men and remain better smellers throughout life.

Coffee could cut the risk of stroke There's no need to cut out your morning capuccino if you've had a stroke or suffer from high blood pressure. Contrary to popular belief, coffee in moderation does not increase your stroke risk. In fact, it may have a protective effect, say researchers. In a study of nearly 35,000 women, those who drank between one and five cups of coffee a day had 25% lower risk of stroke than those who drank less. This could be because the coffee contains high levels of antioxidants, which reduce inflammation and improve insulin sensitivity. It's likely that both ordinary and decaffeinated coffe have these health benefits. But the NHS does advise pregnant women to limit their intake of caffeine to 200mg per day - that's equivalent to about two cups of coffee.

Two-Thirds of UK adults overweight or obese An annual report by England's chief medical officer, Dame Sally Davies, highlights the fact that obesity rates are on the rise. Obesity significantly increases the risk of developing a whole host of chronic diseases, including diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke and cancer. Despite the health implications, two-thirds of adults in the UK are now overweight or obese, and one-third of children. These numbers are approximately double those seen in the 1990s. The cause of the crisis? Dame Sally claims that being overweight or obese is increasingly seen as the norm, and many people do not even recognize that they have a problem. The chief medical officer also suggests that society as a whole has stopped associating being overweight with being unhealthy, with larger mannequins being introduced into shops and a general increase in the size of clothes. Weight is often a difficult subject to broach due to obvious sensitivities and the fear of political correctness. There is also the concern with problems turning to the other end of the spectrum - eating disorders and being underweight. Nevertheless, we are currently in an obesity crises. Whether we recognise it or not, the facts speak for themselves: two thirds of adults and one third of children obese or overweight is a big problem. It's a problem that causes thousands of deaths every year, and costs the tax payers millions of pounds, yet it is almost entirely preventable. A nation-wide sugar tax has been suggested, and is looking more and more likely to be introduced. If restrictions like these are to be avoided, it is down to each individual to make the decision to evaluate their realistic state of health and that of their children, and take action accordingly. So how can we play our part and reduce our risk of being overweight or obese? • Eat a diet consisting mainly of whole, nutrient dense plant foods: fresh vegetables and fruits, legumes, whole-grains, nuts and seeds. • Limit the consumption of processed foods and animal products. • Take part in regular and varied exercise. • Control stress levels with regular meditation, yoga or other relaxation techniques. Ultimately, only we are responsible for making the changes; ones that move us towards a healthier future. 46 THE MARKET PLACE

The Number One Health Nut Nuts have had some bad press because of their fat content, but studies have shown that people who include a handful of nuts in their daily diet actually either maintain or lose weight. They can also help to lower cholesterol and protect the body against disease. When it comes to heart health, though, walnuts are the best choice, say nutrition experts. That's because they contain twice as many antioxidants as other nuts. These compounds protect cells against damage caused by harmful free radicals, which could play a role in heart disease and some cancers. Nuts are best eaten raw or unroasted, as the heat from roasting reduces the quality of the antioxidants. Aim for about 25g a day for heart benefits. Add a tablespoon of chopped walnuts to breakfast cereal. Scatter 8-10 walnuts over a summer salad of mixed leaves, radish and goats cheese. Swirl chopped walnuts and honey into regular 0% fat greek yogurt.

Boost Your SPF Growing evidence indicates that tomato paste could help protect skin against UV damage and sunburn. In a recent study, women who ate 55g tomato paste daily showed a 30% increase in skin protection compared with those who didn't. The reason? A component called lycopene, which changes form when cooked or processed. It was found to offer three times more protection against the sun's rays than the lycopene in raw tomatoes, providing the skin with an extra SPF2. However, skin cancer specialist Professor Mark Birch-Machin is keen to stress that regularly eating tomato paste is not a replacement for sun cream, so don't forget to wear the right SPF for your skin type and stay safe in the sun..

News: Free medicine delivered to all homes...

Part 3 in a series by Knud Byrjalsen, Chiropractic Clinic, Nerja.

High cholesterol and water. What is the relationship ? Just to recap what we have learned so far from previous articles on water in this fine magazine. Dr Batman(ghelidj) - a prominent US medical doctor, who spent the better part of his life trying to convince his fellow earthlings (and the even tougher job to convince his fellow colleagues) that drinking sufficient water can help us be healthier and happier. Batman claims that the majority of us are dehydrated, some of us to a milder degree causing milder symptoms like low energy, slow digestion and many other symptoms that we tend to ignore, and blame other things for. Some of us are dehydrated to a moderate degree with yellowish urine and suffer the beginning of life quality lowering symptoms like lethargy, stress, anxiety, constipation etc. And then there are the group of people that really should pay attention to Batman. The severely dehydrated, with downright diseases like asthma, angina, depression, musculoskeletal problems, high cholesterol, ulcers, and even rheumatoid arthritis. I realize that many will be shaking their heads in disbelief when they read this, unfortunately some will even be medical people. Now, I have to stress the fact that this information is coming from Dr Batman's extensive and life long research, studies and PRACTICE - because do not forget that he was not just a researcher that believed in a theory, he treated his patients with water and saw the incredible results first hand. And even though l myself am a firm believer in his teachings, l cannot take responsibility for anyone following this advice and either getting in trouble, or less seriously not getting any results from the water treatment. Obviously, if you have any serious health problem, you should consult with your health professional before getting into this. Having secured my backside, let us go back to the subject. Dr Batman says that the reason lack of water first of all can cause all these symptoms and diseases, and remedy them once the body receives adequate hydration, is that when the body gets dehydrated for a longer period, a rationing and distribution system for the available water becomes operative according to a predetermined priority program - a form of draught management. Meaning that the body according to average intake of water in your personal past is making the water that does come into your body count in the most important places, like the brain, BEFORE it is let into the less important places, like your joints (causing arthritis) or your stomach lining (causing ulcers). This essentially means that you can happily, without noticing any danger, slowly walk right into a debilitating condition. The brain gets its share, and all seems well, but you have areas in your body suffering in silence because of the drought. Simply put, deserted areas that neve receive enough water, since there isn't enough coming in. But the silence will not last forever, and symptoms develop that you are then medicated for, even though it is a cry for water by the body. And nobody told you 48 THE MARKET PLACE

News from local animal charities A.P.A.Ri.V. (Association for the Protection of Animals Rincon de la Victoria) Here at APARIV we have a number of dogs that for one reason or another just don't get adopted and end up living most of their lives at the refuge. Each month we will introduce such a dog to you in the hope of them finally finding a permanent home.

Whitey - the Wonder Dog Our special dog Theodore goes by the name of Whitey, although his coat has a few light brown markings. He is very camera shy for some reason, and every attempt to get a photo with his signature smile just gets thwarted. The photo you see here does not do him justice. He loves his belly rubbed. His eyes are a lovely tawny color and he gets along well with both male and female dogs. A while back, it was looking like he would be adopted by a mother and daughter in Switzerland. Unfortunately, that fell through, so now Whitey is once more looking for his forever home. Interested? Call Lola on 657-219-269 or contact us via www.apariv.com

TAIL (Torrox Animal International League)

An attempt to outlaw cock-fighting in the Canary Islands has failed after the regional government dropped a proposed amendment to make the practice illegal. The activity remains lawful on the islands, and in Andalucía, where it is protected as “cultural.” Following last month’s failure to ban the blood sport, the proposal will now be debated in the region’s upper house while lobbying against it continues. And Madonna’s decision to dress as a matador to promote her new album has been criticised by animal rights activists. The group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, PETA, said the 56-yearold has “clearly lost her footing,” in reference to the cape incident at the Brit awards. It suggested that her choreography should reflect, “something less offensive than imitating a bloody spectacle.” An endangered bearded vulture was born last month in Jaén’s Cazorla nature reserve. The chick arrived at a breeding centre established to increase the population, with over 40 birds released into the wild since 2009. Nine eggs have been laid so far this year at the centre with another hen expected to lay imminently. Police in Castilla y León are looking for poachers who killed and butchered about 100 deer in a forest during March. Hikers discovered the remains of the animals which are thought to have been weakened after being trapped in snow without food. Local hunters called the incident “barbaric,” adding that deer have to be culled, but at the right time of year, and in the right way.

On 25th of this month Tail has it’s Third Spring Dog Show which will be held at our usual venue Chiringuito El Barco – that’s the beach bar with the expanse of grass lawns – at Penoñcillo Beach, Torrox Costa. Our dog show days have become known for being such an enjoyable day out for all the family. Look out for our posters for further information and the classes being judged. Adoptions from our Refuge, and our fosterers (mainly puppies, some having been hand reared), have been encouragingly strong in March, and if truth be told they needed to be. We were really reaching the end of knowing Missi who is eight weeks old and where to put the ever growing looking for her forever home. numbers being – literally – dumped at the Refuge. We have been encouraged that in addition to the foreign animal welfare charities with whom we already deal for placement for dogs, we have during the past month been approached by two other such groups, one from Holland and one from Germany. It is great to know that Tail is getting a good name in a much wider field, and that our rescue dogs will have more chance of finding a loving home. And that is reward and justification for all the hard work and effort put in by Tail volunteers in the Refuge and the shops. www.tailtorrox.es Follow us on facebook.

Clothing, pulled from the racks in branches of Spain’s Inditex shops, including Zara and Pull & Bear, has arrived in Syrian refugee camps. The angora rabbit fur garments were withdrawn after protests by animal rights group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals which estimated that they had a retail value of over 800,000E. Around 23,000 items are believed to have been shipped out.

C.A.S. (Costa Animal Society)

The Costa Animal Society is always in need of more helpers in a number of areas, so if you have spare time to fill, please make contact! In particular, more fundraisers are needed to work with our team, people are required to help with the feeding of the cats at the numerous feeding stations maintained by CAS, and animal lovers who could undertake a monthly airport run are necessary to take animals being re-homed in northern Europe to catch their flights. In addition, fosterers are always required to take short-term care of animals until a permanent home can be found for them. Even if you are only here for few months a year, CAS would appreciate your help. For a no-obligation chat, contact Wendy on 95 203 7095 or Vera on 95 252 9670 for general enquiries. Simone on 619 903 815 can answer queries about airport runs in English or German. And despite the tough times, money is still needed to cope with the continuous flow of abandoned dogs and cats requiring help from the Costa Animal Society. If you could donate a little to help the animals, CAS would be most grateful. Bank: Cajamar · Account Name: Costa Animal Society

Animal News A 28-year-old blind woman in Málaga claims her guide dog Lilly died last month after having been poisoned. Lourdes Fernández says her black Labrador retriever bitch suffered from renal problems after eating poisoned food left on the ground at places where the dog, trained at a cost of 42,500 euros, was regularly seen. National Police investigating the case say that vets have reported other poisonings of domestic pets in the city. The body of a 115 kilo adult dolphin was washed up on Nerja’s Calahonda beach during March. It followed the appearance of another dolphin in Rincón de la Victoria only a couple of days earlier. Vets from CREMA, Málaga’s centre for recovery of threatened marine species, examined the specimens to determine the cause of death. Meanwhile, an endangered thresher shark was caught by a fishing boat a mile off the Catalan coast last month. The three metre long creature, known as a fox shark in Spanish, weighed 230 kilos and was discovered in a catch in the boat from Arenys de Mar. It is reported to have become entangled in the nets and was already dead when pulled to the surface. 50 THE MARKET PLACE

Call for volunteers! The Costa Animal Society needs more volunteers to join its small band of dedicated helpers raising money to help animals in distress in this area. CAS is in particular need of those who could give time to run its charity shop in Nerja on weekdays, and to help out with its stall at the town’s market on Sunday mornings between about 8.00am and 2.00pm. If you have time and energy and could spare a few hours a week to help raise money for stray and abandoned animals, please call Diana Carter, CAS’s secretary, for a no-obligation chat. Diana would also like to hear from anyone who can donate goods which can be sold to raise cash for the charity’s work. CAS can collect items in the local area. CAS seeks new president After many years valuable service as President of the Costa Animal Society, Wendy Thorne has resigned the position. CAS is now seeking someone to take over this role and to lead the charity into what promises to be a challenging future. The office of President requires someone who is passionate about the welfare of animals, especially here on the coast. Strong leadership skills and the ability to communicate with all levels of society are also essential, and with a public persona, the new CAS President will become the figurehead for the group in the coming years. The President will be supported by a Committee who have responsibility for the many and varied activities undertaken by CAS. Please note that this is a voluntary position. Previous involvement with a registered charity would be ideal, though not Former CAS President essential, and some Spanish language Wendy Thorne skill would be advantageous. The appointee must be resident of Spain, to fulfil the local fiscal and legal requirements of the role. was once a sleepy fishing village but now the town has a population of over 21,000. The Balcón de Europa is a magnificent promenade that was made famous by King Alfonso XII , who’s statue now takes pride of place at the far end. Close by is the 17th century Church of El Salvador, and the beautiful gardens of Capistrano Playa. The town boasts an active Centro de Cultura, and a new attraction is The Fuente de Europa in Verano Azul Park, which is a very impressive monument, made from pieces of stone donated from EU member states. There are many beaches to be found either side and in front of the town, including Burriana with its numerous cafés and restaurants. Here too, you can take advantage of the water sports on offer, including water skiing, scuba diving and sailing. Just outside Nerja on the coast road towards Maro is a very impressive aquaduct which used to supply the local sugar factory, but is now used to carry water to local farms.

Torre del Mar

is just 30 minutes from Malaga, and is the beach resort of Velez Málaga. Its population of 21,000 grows between June and September to 150,000. The towns attractions have expanded over the last few years to cope with the demand, and now the four kilometres of beach have been enhanced by an impressive promenade, which stretches all the way to Caleta de Vélez, a port providing over 200 berths and offering sailing and water sports. Throughout the summer, there are many Chiringuitos on the beach, serving fresh barbequed fish and ice cold beers. In 2002, Paseo de Larios was pedestrianized, and is now a tranquil promenade, with plenty of pavement cafés and restaurants. At the seafront end of Larios is a line of bars and discos which continue throughout the night on Fridays and Saturdays. The history of Torre is uncertain, but it is thought that it might have been part of an ancient Greek settlement, known as Mainake, which was destroyed by the Carthaginians. Tombs of the Carthaginians were found at the mouth of the river Velez. More recently, it was a small fishing village until major development began in the 1970’s.

La Herradura

nestles between the Punta de la Mona to the east and the rock of Cerro Gordo to the west. The bay enjoys shelter from west winds creating mostly crystal-clear waters, and is a popular location for water sports & paragliding. There are numerous beach bars and restaurants serving specialities of the region, including tropical salads, fresh fish or paella. The Marina del Este near La Herradura is tucked betwen Punta de la Mona to the west and Cotobro to the east. It boasts a beautiful port, elegantly designed to incorporate select shops, art galleries, bars and restaurants. This small strip of coast also claims to be the best place to dive between Almeria and Gibraltar, and is home to one of the areas leading diving schools.

Lake Viñuela

is a 15 minute drive from the N340 Autovia, leaving at the junction for Velez Malaga. Head inland along the A356; this direction also leads to numerous inland white villages. The first turning on our map is to Benamocarra, which is sign posted to the right after the last roundabout into Velez Malaga. This road will take you back over the main road and then also on to Iznate, and divides to take you to Almachar, El Borge and Cutar. The second turning off the A356 is on the right (after the Repsol garage) to Trapiche. Continue on the A356, and immediately you will see another junction on the left, sign posted to Benamargosa, Triana, Comares and Cutar. This road will also take you as far as Rio Gordo (for a scenic drive). There is a popular Spanish bar on the corner of this junction called El Cruz. Back on the A356, continue on and you will pass another junction on the right, to Canillas de Aceituno, and finally you will see Lake Vinuela in front of you. Turn right before the lake for Puente de Don Manuel, Alcaucin, Viñuela and Periana; carry straight on for Los Romanes, Rio Gordo and Colmenar.

Frigiliana

encompass 39.74 sq km within which live just over 3,000 people year round. Frigiliana is a popular tourist destination, and because there are many holiday homes here, the population triples during the summer months. The history of Frigiliana dates from prehistoric times. The village has been inhabited by numerous civilisations from the Phoenicians and Romans to the Arabs, who had the greatest impact on the town’s development. During the Christian reconquest, Frigiliana was the site of numerous battles culminating in the famous battle of the Rock of Frigiliana in 1569 which ended in the complete expulsion of the Moorish people. One can learn the history of this struggle by walking through the streets of the historic section where there are a series of twelve ceramic plaques posted about which explain the entire story.
