The valuations industry increases it activity by 22% The Spanish Association of Value Analysis, which have a market share of 85% confirm that 341,335 new valuations were carried out in the first half of 2014, an annual increase of 22%. Also in the 3rd quarter of the year activity increased by a further 5.8%. These increases have occured in virtually all types of buildings and in all applications, from industrial to offices and commercial premises through to housing. In particular valuations of individual housing transactions reached 200,000 compared to 167,000 last year, an increase of 20%. There has been a 23% growth in the number of valuations as part of a new mortgage loan. The value per square metre of a single family home rose slightly in recent months, confirming the stabilisation of housing prices. The secretary of the Association said, “These figures and especially those that show an increase in valuations intended for mortgage lending, both could reflect a recovery in demand for homeownership.

British owned properties demolished, sparking protest
The committee of the Nerja Caves Foundation has confirmed that it will rename the Temporary Exhibition Hall of the Nerja History Museum, "Sala Ana Maria Marquez", in memory of the former director of the museum who was brutally murdered by her partner in August of this year.
Drivers named & shamed Days may be numbered for those who try to avoid paying fines for traffic violations - as nearly 12,000 motorists who haven't paid tickets were named in an official Provincial Bulletin by Málaga Town Hall. The Bulletin, which was published last week, consists of around 140 pages and includes each offender's name, the registration number of the vehicle involved, the offence committed and the amount of the fine. These range from 90 euros for parking in a blue zone without purchasing a ticket, through 100 euros for speeding to 200 euros for stopping in a bus lane or using a mobile phone while driving. After having their names made public, the municipal tax collection agency is contacting each driver, who then has 15 working days to appeal the punishment. Those who choose to pay up get a 50 percent discount if payment is made within the same period.
The demolition of two properties in Cantoria, Almería, last month sparked a wave of protest with press, politicians and demonstrators gathering in the small village of Las Terreras to witness the event. The villas, set in idyllic countryside, were once the dream homes of two British couples. They, together with two other families whose homes on the same hillside were demolished last year, had bought in good faith only to find the houses were constructed illegally on non-urban land. Both the developer and the former mayor of Cantoria, Pedro Llamas, were convicted of planning offences, and a demolition order was granted, despite the families not having received any compensation to date.

Chefchaouen, and the Gentle Art of Haggling So why are Brits so gauche and unconfident when it comes to bargaining and buying in a Moroccan Souk?
W
hen I was very young and lived in Portsmouth, me and mum would go to Charlotte Street market when she wasn’t at work or being a post-war housewife, and insult the market traders. She took me to the market to show me what would happen to me if I didn’t work hard at school. Mum worked at Marshall’s and at Woolworth’s and thought herself a cut above stall holders. “I wouldn’t be so thick with them” she would say, which I’ve worked out means that she wouldn’t help them cheat her. She was very sharp, loudly pointing out to me in my push chair, that the brilliant display on their stall was not what you got when you bought the fruit. You got the “pecked stuff” behind the counter. She would insist on the trader dismantling his display, although for all her bluster I can never recall her asking for a reduction in the price. She would feel demeaned. If she was buying something big like a ‘fridge and she had cash though, she would expect a bit off. Taking the moral high ground and striking a threatening pose was enough to ensure that you got value for money in weight or quality or both and that the
Travelling salesman with his brooms and brushes 12 THE MARKET PLACE
Women selling mint and coriander in the Medina at Chefchaouen. (Photo by Jude Farrar) Every so often one sails into the square with a tray full of toffee sized soaps wrapped in cellophane and dubiously perfumed. One for 10 dirham (E1). Buy one and you get three for 20 dr (E2). Do that and your friend gets a special offer. And so on . . . these women are a lot sharper than they look! trader would be less likely to cheat you. If you returned to the same trader regularly, you could expect him to give you a special deal – “Ah Mrs Perry! I have something here you might like – kept some back for you!” and so on. It was up to the trader to add value to the transaction and keep his customer. As I got older, if I came back from the market with a “Rolex” watch powered by an elderly cockroach that expired in twenty-four hours, or a bag of overripe fruit that would yield under the weight of mother’s finger, she would look me in the eye and say “He saw you coming”. Markets haven’t changed much since then, though there has never been a custom in English food markets for the buyer to try to haggle down the price of the goods. Can you imagine going to the poncy London Borough market today and saying ”A hand-crafted Cornish pasty with slivers of Dexter topside, small-diced French fingerling potatoes and 'hand-shaved' Kentish swede for eight quid? I’ll give you two, and think yerself lucky!” I don’t think so. The great British car boot and the old flea markets on the other hand, now sadly “cleaned up”
by the general gentrification of the inner cities can still be great theatres of British barter. My wife Judy is obsessed, and has hauled me along to them for decades saying “you never know!” And she’s quite right. I once went to a car boot looking for a second-hand cello bow and a 1960’s retro coffee grinder. I found both and knocked each one down for a fiver, on the first stall I came to. So why are Brits so gauche and unconfident when it comes to bargaining and buying in a Moroccan Souk (arabic expression meaning "the market neighbourhood")? When I talk to friends they seem worried about “hassle” and many otherwise adventurous tourists are put off by “hassle”, but surely “hassle” is really only cultural difference? In the mother country we Brits are “hassled” day and night waking and sleeping, to buy things we neither want nor need. There is hassle on billboards, radio, television to buy, buy, buy – much more violently than any Moroccan street trader who invites you into his shop. In our country “hassle” doesn’t stop at the street either. It comes right into our living rooms and bedrooms. At the moment I am
watching an advert for biotic (or is it bionic?) yoghurt. Five beautiful women of a certain age are discussing how they pass wind while enjoying a morning coffee in one of their kitchens . I begin to yearn to join that happy band, or at least to transform my kitchen into an ideal, cosy, fart free idyll by the simple purchase of a moderately priced dairy product. Hassle. I am endlessly slapped in the face by the orange and red plastic of hamburger joints – colours that make me drool for a slab of minced beef like an experimental dog. I’m not offended by this slurry of adverts because it’s normal life. We are hassled en mass. It is normal and ordinary, we buy and sell like mad things and that’s why we are richer than Moroccans. I don’t know what a Moroccan market trader would make of it though. One difference is that for us shopping is a literary experience. The prices are all written down and we like to read them and read the product description. Shopping is also private. We have an internal private discussion with ourselves about whether to buy without the shop keeper interrupting. So when that market trader comes up continued on page 14

THE MARKET PLACE 13
to me in the Souk and makes me an offer I can’t refuse I feel “hassled”. Of course it isn’t hassle! Why shouldn’t I accept an invitation to go into a shop to drink green tea? Or into someone’s brother’s shop that just happens to be on the way to where I actually wanted to go? What’s wrong with meeting a young man’s mother, who is in fact a virgin? Well perhaps not... I lost my fear of being sold into white slavery when I turned sixty, so here are my tips for surviving the Souk. My first tip is to Smile. I don’t say this as an expert in smiling. My mother used to say “For God’s sake smile! It’ll change your life!” I didn’t and it didn’t. Mum was not renowned for her smile either so perhaps it’s genetic. When I was in the Navy I was called to the captain’s cabin to be told that my face was bad for morale. So before I go a haggling I practice smiling in front of the mirror. Always smile when you are saying “No”. It eases the pain for both parties. Being offended is part of the salesman’s tool kit so don’t
offend by expressions of irritation or tightness. Ideally, come across as a fruity old buffer who loves everyone and agrees with everything. If someone invites you down a side alley, smile wave and say something like “Of course dear heart!” as you walk in the opposite direction. Agree that the rug is beautiful, the only one of its kind, is made by a co-operative of starving women, and laugh charmingly when he asks you to buy. Secondly know your pitch. At today’s rate a Moroccan Dirham (MAD) is worth about 90 cents, so if you estimate ten Dirhams to the euro you will be about right. If a trader wants 500 Dirham for a rug, he is asking for about 50 euros. The convention is to offer just over a half of the asking price and settle at between twothirds and three-quarters. The more you are pressured the more you laugh. “I couldn’t possibly pay that much”, “I simply can’t afford that” is a much better gambit than.“How dare you! Are you trying to cheat me?” Remember you are on holiday. You are not some scum bag ex-pat in Africa to rip
No photos! What do you want? Here is a man, there is fish. What more to say?
off honest traders, neither are you a fool who comes to Africa to be bullied into paying more than he would in Spain. Thirdly remember it's all a game. The stakes are much higher for the trader than they are for you. You are on holiday remember. The worst that can happen to you is that you pay a little more than necessary while learning to haggle. Look on it as a small tuition fee. He has to feed his family so he needs all the sales he can get. Very skilled traders can make you feel like a lifelong friend, or an imperialist interloper or a man who has traduced their honour, in a few minutes. Within a few more minutes they will have forgotten all about you and be on to the next customer. Whereas if you are inexperienced or like me you will cling on to the feeling of having been “done” and seethe all week. On no account give in to the temptation to feel guilty. Guilt is the first step to anger and if you get angry there goes your holiday Pay for help. You won’t know where everything is and you’ll probably ask for directions or need other minor assistance from the locals. It’s a good idea to have some ten and twenty Dirham notes in your pocket. These represent one or two euros. If someone physically takes you where you want to go, does some research for you, enlists other local help, guides you through the crowd to the restaurant you are looking for, a small tip completes the transaction and usually ends the relationship. It’s an efficient way of getting round a strange place and your generosity doesn’t actually cost you much. Last of all, put yourself into the hands of God, even if you are an atheist. Its not your fault.
My friend, my name is Ali, and you must buy from me today because tomorrow I am gone. In the morning I leave for Fez, then to Marrakech and thence into the desert sands to emerge, God willing, but when? Take a photograph my friend as a token, and buy today. For we may never meet again. You will win some and you will lose some. There is an element of luck and chance in the art of haggling, and you are never entirely in control. Enjoy your winnings and forgive yourself your mistakes. You can make a mistake just as easily in a conventional British store. When I think of all that yoghurt I ate – and I still fart like a trooper!

First Driving Impressions – JEEP Renegade, European Press Launch, Milan, Italy.
We drove an early version of the Renegade a few weeks ago, and it was good. But has the final production version improved even more?
J
eep is very American. Everything it stands for and its history and tradition is very much a part of the US. But for the first time in Jeeps 73 year history, the Renegade is to be built in Europe, at Fiat Groups plant in Melfi, Italy. Around 170,000 will be built per year, and about one-million will be assembled during its life-cycle. The Renegade will be exported to many countries, including North America. We drove the Renegade mainly on the roads around Bolocco, which is home to Fiat Groups test facility, and also on the off-road course within the proving ground. On the road it was very smooth, comfortable and felt very ‘planted’ to the surface. As you went round the corners it was firm and felt safe and solid, with hardly any body roll. It drove more sports car like than a SUV. The electric power steering is very precise and feels great when cornering at any speed. The Renegade has undergone much testing to ensure everything is as good as it can be in terms of reliability and proving the test of time on all components and bodywork. The engineers have driven the early test vehicles over five-million kilometres on and off road. The design is very Jeep; with its ‘seven-bar’ grille and ‘chunkystyling’ you can tell from a long distance exactly which brand it is, and no confusion over what badge it will have on it. The windscreen is very upright, and the front end also upright, but despite this it still has a low drag-coefficient of 0.34, which 18 THE MARKET PLACE
helps it cut through the air more easily and helps reduce fuel consumption. The Renegade looks so much better in the flesh than looking at the photographs. Some cars are like this, and this Jeep is one of those. The interior is well appointed, the quality is good and it feels spacious. The doors open wide for easier access and it generally feels more premium than some of its competitors. It has been well thought through, and well executed. The engineers have ensured that the cabin is quiet by adding extra sound insulation, and this is fairly evident when driving on the motorway. But there are a couple of niggling points, such as the door seals are not at the bottom of the doors, but a couple of inches up, allowing any dirt or mud to collect on the sill. This is annoying as every time you get in or out, you can, if you are not careful, end up with dirty trousers, or in the ladies case, dirty legs or skirts. Exact details on the Renegade for the UK are at the moment a bit sketchy, as it is nearly six-months away from launch in the UK, but it will soon be available in Europe where prices will start at under 20,000 euros. There will be both petrol and diesel engines offered, and a choice of either two and four wheel drive. We drove the 1.4-litre petrol which was surprisingly good, quick and quiet, and also the diesel which was equally as good, but the petrol just seemed better to drive and much better than any of us could have imagined. This all-new, European built, attractive SUV comes at just the right time for Jeep. It has, no doubt, some very good and competent competitors that are already well established but it does have those Jeep badges on it, which will be appealing to many people who want to drive the American Brand, have wanted to for many years, but haven’t been able to as there has never been a credible - and affordable - ‘Baby-Jeep’. Having a Jeep on your drive, being seen driving a Jeep and feeling good about driving one will get potential customers into Jeep showrooms, when they have never previously been before. Cruise Ships take a Quantum Leap Forward Independent Technology News by www.tracyandmatt.co.uk
J
ust last month Royal Caribbean International took delivery of their newest cruise ship, Quantum of the Seas, from Meyer Werft Yard. Now you may well be wondering why we’re talking about a cruise ship, and to be honest, when Royal Caribbean invited us aboard a few weeks ago, I too wondered. But Quantum of the Seas is all about technology and is the most technologically advanced cruise ship in the world. Royal Caribbean say it’s the world’s first Smart Ship, with “boatloads of bandwidth” which allow the cruise line to offer unprecedented connectivity – 500 times more than any other cruise ship; easy-to-use systems that expand guest choices and simplify schedules, plus, RFID technology that speeds up the boarding process and allows guest to track their luggage every step of the way. Tracy and I were able to spend two nights on Quantum, to experience all of this technology for ourselves. This equated to two days of liberally using words like ‘Awesome’, ‘Amazing’, ‘Incredible’ and ‘Brilliant’. The use of technology starts before you even step aboard. About 10 days before we were due to set sail, Royal Caribbean sent me my “reservation number” and asked if we would complete the online check in. This process is very similar to online check in for an airline where they go through and take all your relevant information including passport and visa details. Although, as we were going on a cruiseto-nowhere, a visa was not required. During the process you are also asked to take or provide a headshot which is then used as part of the boarding process. If you were going on a cruise which stopped at other ports the photo is used to identify you when you leave and board the ship as they scan you in and out with your WOWband or smart card. If you are not happy providing your own photo they can also take one at the port as part of the check in process. The last part of the online check in was to set up your onboard charging account. Once you have this set up it means that once onboard just a quick scan of your band and you can pay for anything!
Statistical Information The other big part of the pre-planning Royal Caribbean have introduced comes from their change from a traditional main dining room to their new ‘dynamic dining’ system. Once I was checked in I could then go and make restaurant reservations for our 2 nights along with entertainment reservations for the shows. The system will also handle the shore excursions and spa appointments in the future. What’s really nice is once you have something booked it tells you if you are going to have a clash and you can view everything in the really well laid out planner. Once onboard all these reservations will then transfer to your Royal iQ app and will also save guests from standing in lines and trudging from place to place on the first day of the cruise. As Royal Caribbean say, ‘you get the first day of your vacation back’. Royal Caribbean guests can go from “sidewalk to ship” in 10 minutes with no check-in counter, no forms to fill out and no lines to stand in. The average check in time on the day we boarded was just 7 minutes!
RFID Technology & WOWBand RFID technology is becoming more commonplace and Royal Caribbean are certainly using this to its advantage in a number of key ways. During the boarding process, RFID tags are placed upon your luggage. This allows guests to track their luggage in real time on their smartphones and monitor their bags’ progress through key points en route to the stateroom. On departure, the process is reversed. Quantum of the Seas also has new RFID ‘WOWband’ wristbands, which can be used as your room key or can be used to pay for onboard purchases, make reservations, find your photos in the onboard photo shop etc. Simplicity and efficiency are also at the heart of two new apps that put guests in charge of their cruise choices: Cruise Planner, which allows guests to research and book dining reservations, shore excursions, spa appointments and more before their vacation begins; and Royal iQ, North Star: an engineering marvel that transports guests more than 300 feet above the ocean!
Registry: Nassau, Bahamas. Built at Meyer Werft, Papenburg, Germany. 168,666 GRT. 1,141 feet (348 meters) long. 136 feet (41 meters) wide. 28 feet (8.5 meters) draft. 22 knots cruising speed. 16 guest decks. 18 total decks. 16 guest elevators. 4 bow thrusters with 4,694 hp each. 4,180 guests (double occupancy). 4,905 guests total. 2,090 of Royal Caribbean’s largest and most advanced staterooms ever. 375 Virtual Balcony staterooms: interior staterooms offering expansive real-time views of the ocean and exciting destinations through virtual balconies. Up to 16 Family-Connected staterooms: perfect for multi-generational families or groups of friends, these staterooms provide separate bedrooms and bathrooms for all. 12 new Studio staterooms with balconies and 16 Studio Interior staterooms, both for single travellers. available as a downloadable app and provided at freestanding iQ stations around the ship. Royal iQ allows guests to manage details during the cruise, includes a convenient calendar that provides at-a-glance views of their program, and keep in touch with one another and home via phone and text capabilities.
WiFi onboard Connectivity on cruise ships has always been hit or miss and bandwidth is a big issue. This is set to change with Quantum of the Seas though, as Royal Caribbean International teamed up with O3b Networks, a global satellite provider, who developed a new technology. This new satellite network delivers “fiber-optic bandwidth.” Quantum of the Seas features O3b fiber-like Internet service which will provide more than 500 times the bandwidth that you’d experience from a regular on-board connection. The O3b fiber-like Internet service was first piloted on Oasis of the Seas in December 2013 and has also been since introduced on Allure of the Seas. The new system fitted to Quantum of the Seas will provide O3b coverage as the ship approaches the east coast of the United States. Royal Caribbean International is now testing a variety of pricing. While the prices are highly subject to change, the current pricing offers guests $29.95 per hour, $99.95 per day, and $189.95 for unlimited usage on a 7-night cruise for one device.

You may read elsewhere in the press that there was ‘no Wifi coverage’ on Quantum during the inaugural sailing but that’s just sensationalism. There was indeed WiFi on board but there isn’t O3b satellite coverage in Europe as yet. This will be ready in time for the launch of the next Quantum Class ship, Anthem of the Seas, when she commences service from Southampton in April of 2015. This fact was made clear to members of the press both before and during the inaugural sailing.
Ripcord Ripcord by iFly is just awesome! This offers guests the chance to experience skydiving in a wind tunnel and is the first of such to be installed on a sea-going vessel.
North Star
Bionic Bar
If skydiving seems a little bit too energetic for you then there’s another way to experience some sights aboard Quantum of the Seas with North Star.
One of the coolest additions to Quantum of the Seas are the Robot bartenders at the Bionic Bar.
North Star is “an engineering marvel that transports guests more than 300 feet above the ocean”. Guests board a large glass capsule at the end of a large boom arm and are then hoisted high into the air for unique views of both the ocean and the ship itself. Here you can take some exceptional photographs and I’m sure it will be even more amazing to be able to take photos of some of the cruise destinations, as North Star is able to operate both at sea and in port.
These masterpieces of technology can create and pour your favourite mixed drink in just a few seconds, right before your eyes. Tablet computers allow patrons to select their desired drink from an extensive list, while electronic screens at either side tell you how long you’ll have to wait for your drink and where you are in the queue.
Sea Plex So heights may not be your thing but if you’re still looking for some fun then there’s plenty to be had at Sea Plex.
Following a short briefing video and time with an instructor, guests are provided with a jumpsuit, goggles, helmet and ear protection. Your group is then taken to the wind tunnel where you get to take it in turns to experience what it’s like to freefall skydive. With a series of hand gestures and physical guidance from an instructor it doesn’t take too long to get the hang of the basic positions but it looks like a lot of training would be needed to get really good at it. Fortunately, you’ll be able to buy packages to give you a certain number of training sessions with an expert. I’d recommend keeping each session fairly short to begin with though - it takes a lot out of you!
Sea Plex offers the largest indoor active space at sea and is a distinctive and flexible sporting and entertainment venue offering more first at sea experiences. Guests can experience a circus school with flying trapeze, or play basketball on a full-size regulation basketball court. By night, the first-ever bumper car and roller skating offerings deliver fun and excitement. Or, guests can dance to music orchestrated from a floating DJ booth which hovers above the activity below.
Unfortunately the Bionic Bar was plagued with teething problems during our time on Quantum of the Seas but we were able to see it operational on a number of occasions and it certainly is a talking point. It also ensures that you get your turn to order from the bar fairly and the robots don’t ask for tips! Of course, it takes far more than a bionic bartender and skydiving to make a truly smart ship and items mentioned in this article are just a few of the more obvious, customer-facing innovative technologies that you’ll find aboard Quantum of the Seas. Below the surface there’s plenty more to talk about from the onboard waste reclamation to the air-lubrication system…

f you don't drink, please feel free to skip this page, or rip it out and pass it along to the many people here on the Costa del Sol who like to indulge in a tipple or two - usually too many ! Waking up with a pounding head, a delicate stomach and mouth as dry as a desert is an all too familiar scenario for many over the festive season. Hangovers are the worst part of drinking too much, and yet almost inevitable when adults go out to a party - especially a Christmas party!. To help reduce the self inflicted misery, a dollop of wisdom is your best medicine. No one knows hangover prevention better than the doctors. "A fatty meal is beneficial," says Dr Rob Hicks, a man often quoted by the BBC. "Fat is digested slowly and will protect the stomach from the irritating effects of alcohol." Dr Mehmet Oz, Oprah Winfrey's famous medical mouthpiece, says you could even make your fats healthy ones, like those found in avocados and walnuts. "They'll slow down absorption," he says. "Same goes for honey and tomato juice." I could not find many recipes featuring tomato juice, honey, avocados and walnuts and I am not sure I would want to! How about a nice fatty steak and chips instead? This can be found in countless quality eateries here on the 26 THE MARKET PLACE
coast so you don't need to even bother to get the frying pan out and cook it yourself! Blood sugar levels drop because the body produces too much insulin in response to the high sugar content of alcohol. Migraine specialist Andy Dowson recommends drinking milk before you go to bed. "Drinking milk will combat many symptoms, " he says. "Hangovers are thought to be triggered by low blood sugar and dehydration, both of which are potent triggers for migraine - so if you can stomach it, drink milk before sleeping. "This will give you the volume of fluid as well as help get your blood sugar levels back up. "Milk is also an anti-diuretic (stopping kidneys producing urine). This should mean fewer trips to the loo, minimising sleep disruption. The fact that milk is alkaline might also counteract any inflammation of the stomach caused by acidity. Alcohol is a diuretic, which means it speeds up the passing of water, making you feel dehydrated. Replacing lost electrolytes is important too, but while these can be found in sports drinks you can also get the powder form which doctors say works much better. If you are really serious about dodging the hangover, celebrities are known to use "party drips" - intravenous shots of vitamins and minerals. Slightly more affordable (and less

crazy) is to monitor which drinks you are downing. The trick is to avoid dark coloured tipples, which contain something called "congeners" - toxins that are a by-product of the fermentation process. Although it may be tempting to nurse a sore head with another alcoholic drink, try to avoid indulging in more alcohol, experts say this only delays the onset of the hangover symptoms. A team of Chinese scientists has suggested that what you drink following the consumption of alcoholic beverages could alter the effect of alcohol on your body. Following tests on a number of drinks, the carbonated drink Sprite emerged as a potential reliever of alcohol-related symptoms.

Competa Christmas Market & fair
Torrox, a town in the south of Axarquía, at the foot of the Sierras de Tejeda, Almijara y Alhama, boasts an interesting calendar of fiestas and events. The most popular of them is Migas Day, in December. On Sunday before Christmas, Torrox is “invaded” by hundreds of out-of-towners coming to celebrate and taste the most popular dish here.
Saturday 6th of December from 9am – 2pm visitors are welcomed once again to the Cómpeta Christmas Fair & Market. The Christmas market will be located just off the main plaza, next to the church in the Paseo de las tradiciones which is also home to a permanent exhibition of traditional images in mosaics. If the weather isn’t co-operating, the market will be held in the car park underneath the town hall. Santa will be in town at the Action for Animal stall and has a sack of goodies suitable for children of all ages. Visitors can wander round the stalls, there is plenty to see and do, lots of different stalls & plenty of bargains to be had.
International Animal Rights Day - 10th Dec 2014
the festival of must & pork colmenar 14th december
International Animal Rights Day (IARD) aims to serve the same purpose as it does every year - reminding human beings that every creature on the planet deserves to be treated with equal kindness and respect. Buy cosmetics not tested on animals. It only takes a second to check the back of the product for 'not tested on animals'. Start with something little and together we'll soon be making a huge difference!
Colmenar, a village in Alta Axarquía, next to Montes de Málaga Nature Park, is the perfect setting to produce quality foods; for example, pork products. Colmenar holds one of the main celebrations on the local calendar: the Festival of Must and Pork. Taking place in mid December, this Festival draws a high number of visitors every year, who come to town to taste the traditional dishes served in the Route of Tapas.

Alan Turing: A genius of his time Many lives were saved during the Second World War through the mathematical genius of Alan Turing. A man with a brain so finely tuned he was able to solve the coded messages being sent from German high command, to their U boats, and destroyers. The work he carried out at Bletchley Park enabled the allied high command to be one jump ahead of their German counterparts, and saved the lives of thousands of our troops, and sailors, who would have been lost at sea. It is estimated that through his work alone as a code breaker the war was shortened by two years, saving countless lives. Such a man should have been hailed a national hero, and indeed he was awarded the MBE and DSO medals for services to his country. What a success story. Such a man should have been held in high esteem by his fellow countrymen, but his achievements were not known by the general public as his work was covered by the civil secrets act. Alan returned to his academic life after the war, and continued to research in the field of higher mathematics. He was known among his peers as the father of the computer, and once again put his country ahead of the game. Why then was such a man driven to take his own life. To end his days in such deep despair that there was nothing left for him to live for. Alan Turing story was new to me, and I found it extremely moving. Alan was a practising homosexual and in the 1950’s homosexuality was not tolerated by the sanctimonious authoritarians, who made the laws of the land. Alan Turing’s sexual preferences were common knowledge throughout the war years. The M.O.D chose to turn a blind eye to this matter, and he was passed through all the government security checks. There was certainly no question of reporting his illegal sexual preferences to the police. It was only some years later, when a burglary at his flat was investigated by the Metropolitan police, that Alan Turing’s story took an ugly twist. It seemed that the burglar responsible for the break-in was a known homosexual. He was also an associate of Alan’s male partner. To protect his partner from being a suspect in the burglary Alan confessed that he shared his flat with his male friend. Far from protecting his friend from the suspicion of being in league with the burglar, Alan was charged, and convicted with immoral sexual acts and co-habiting in an illegal partnership. He was sentenced to four years imprisonment. Was Turing a threat to the morals of innocent young men? Was he prowling the streets looking for rent boys? No, he was living in the privacy of his own home with a consenting male partner. His homosexuality had already been condoned by the government of the day. It is unbelievable in this day and age that such a thing could happen, Civil marriages take place between same gender couples, who are able to live openly in our society, where homophiles are thankfully in the minority. Back in the fifties there was no such understanding. Alan Turing was given the choice of four years imprisonment or medical castration. 30 THE MARKET PLACE
Because of the horror of what he would have to face in prison, where rape and buggery were common factors, he chose castration, not knowing the side effects the drugs would cause. This proved to be his death sentence, as it not only robbed him of his libido, but it also robbed him of his powers of concentration, sending him into deep depression. Where were his friends in the M.O.D when he needed them? If a blind eye was turned to his private life when his help was needed to save his country, surely the peacetime authorities should have afforded him continued protection. To his countries lasting shame the greatest genius of the age had been driven to suicide, by the short sighted autocrats of the time. Surely at the very least his MP should have stepped forward to help him. Failing that the doctors could have refused to administer the drugs that they knew would have such terrible side effects. Alan Turing’s body was found by his landlady a year after his barbaric sentence had been carried out. An apple, impregnated with cyanide, was beside his body. One bite had been taken from it. A symbol of the forbidden fruit that caused man's first downfall. During these later years there have been moves to reinstate the good name of Alan Turing. Bursaries in his name enable bright students to study at his old university. Recently her majesty the Queen awarded a posthumous pardon on behalf of her government. How can it be thought appropriate to award a pardon to such a man? He was treated dishonourably, and abandoned by the government of the day. A Royal apology should be given to the Turing's family, rather than a postumous pardon. The story should be recorded as a shameful event in our history. Audrey McCrory Nerja Scribblers.

Horoscope December Aries

Gemini
May 22nd - June 21st
Leo
July 23rd - Aug. 21st
Libra
Sept. 24th - Oct. 23rd
This month could have you retreating from social functions. You may prefer to spend more time alone reflecting on your associations with people in your social circles. Spend time people-watching in a city or a local shopping centre as a way to feel out your role in humanity. This period shall have a healing effect on you.
This month is excellent for your career and achieving your goals. The key here is to let go and let it happen rather than attempting to guide or control your path at this time. The planets indicate expansion in your career or life path, however it may be a little delayed or happen in a start and stop motion. The month is very favourable for money, business and property. All the planets support hard work, organization and creativity in the workplace and career. You would take confident action after necessary analysis of facts and figures. There would be steady growth through hard work and perseverance. This month will help you reach into your subconscious mind and inner self to find what it is that would bring you fulfilment. This period supports your sacred duty as a Libra to bring forth understanding, harmony and balance to whatever you choose to undertake.
Nov. 23rd - Dec. 22nd
This month helps you decide what the best course of action is for you in life right now. Take your time to look at all the facts before making a decision. The planets will strengthen your desire to serve others. You may find renewed passion by helping others solve their problems or face their challenges through sharing your perspective.
Aquarius

Cancer
June 22nd - July 22nd
This month planets influence your career, goals and ambition. This is a time to review your life path and possibly take it easy for a while. Have a look at whether your current path is real or illusionary. You may be feeling like escaping from what you do when it would be best to to stay put and turn your visions into realities.
December could keep you very busy tending to the details of everyday life that have escaped you in recent months. Your high energy levels help you accomplish tasks more quickly. This period also provides a discriminating eye to what you do as well. Be sure to budget time in with friends.
Virgo
This month would trigger your passions so that you put them into action in both your personal and professional life. The planets shall support a period of maturity through learning the lesson of time management. It is a good time to invest in transforming your home into what you would like it to be.
Scorpio
The planetary placements for this month shall keep you grounded. This is a time of reflecting on home, family and childhood dreams. You may find creative or intuitive abilities resurfacing. Key here will be accepting yourself as the black sheep and catalyst for change in your family.
Capricorn
This month is an excellent time to travel, finish a course of study or handle any legal or property issues that involve analysing facts, figures and details. It also provides mental clarity and stamina to solve any problems. The period encourages diplomacy and tact when revealing information to others.
Aug. 22nd - Sept. 23rd
Oct. 24th - Nov. 22nd
Dec. 23rd - Jan. 20th
Pisces
Feb. 20th - Mar. 20th
You would be trading old relationships in favour of new ones this month. The planets also teach lessons about giving and receiving, as well as maturity and responsibility in relationships. Try being honest and choosy about your relationships right now. The planets can make you fickle, making you look more like a fair weather friend than a loyal one.

EAT SEASONABLY... Artichoke Search your local market for different varieties of squash, a nutritious addition to your diet If you have never eaten artichokes before, their intricate outer appearance can look intimidating. The artichoke is a big thistle plant that was first developed n Fat : 0.6 g in Sicily, and is at the heart of Mediterranean cooking. There are several types of artichokes available, including green or purple n Carbohydrates : 20.1g regular artichokes and baby artichokes. Baby artichokes are n Protein: 4.9 g actually fully mature artichokes that grow closer to the ground, n Fibre: 14.4 g sheltered by the larger leaves on the plant. Unlike regular artichokes, which have a fuzzy, inedible portion called the "choke," the entire baby artichoke is fully edible.
Nutritional Data for Artichoke
Not only are artichokes fun to eat, they are also very nutritious. They are rich in potassium, Vitamin C, folate, and fibre, and they are also a great source of antioxidants. Inulin, which is a prebiotic, also naturally occurs in artichokes. The Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity (ORAC) score of 1 medium artichoke is 8514, which is higher than a glass of red wine (ORAC 5693) or half a cup of pomegranate juice (ORAC 5853). Since artichokes also contain cynarin, some people believe that they can help lower cholesterol and protect liver cells, but studies to date have not been able to consistently demonstrate a benefit.

Step by Step 1. Trim the artichokes: remove the smaller leaves and with
scissors trim the tips of the larger leaves. Slice off the very tip of the stem and then take the tough dark green outer part of the stem off, by starting at the bottom of the stem and trimming up to the top. 2. Clean up the bottom of the artichoke by removing any of the dark parts of the leaves that you snapped off. With a very sharp larger knife, cut off about the top third of the whole artichoke. Place artichoke on cutting board, stem up, and slice right down the stem, cutting the artichoke in half. You are going to bake the artichokes without the stuffing for the first 40 minutes. The broth will keep the artichokes moist. 5. Slice leeks in half, lengthwise, and wash, if they are dirty. Slice thinly into half rings. Heat 2 tablespoons of olive oil in skillet. Add leeks and cook, not allowing them to brown, for a few minutes until they are soft. Add garlic and saute for two minutes. Season with some salt and pepper. Turn off heat. Add chopped parsley, bread crumbs and cheese and stir. Transfer to a bowl. 6. Remove artichokes from oven. Uncover and stuff each artichoke with some of the stuffing mixture, place foil on top of pan again tightly, bake for another 20 minutes. Remove foil and bake for another 15 minutes until stuffing is a little golden brown.

including polishing silver. Make a paste using baking soda and a small amount of water. Apply the paste to a damp, clean sponge and rub the sponge onto your tarnished silver. Rinse off the paste with warm water, then polish your silver with a damp cloth.
Citrus juice and salt The lemon or lime juice and salt in your cupboard are not just ingredients for a margarita. You can make a polishing paste by mixing one tablespoon of lime or lemon juice with two tablespoons of salt. Polish silver with the paste, then rub with a dry cloth.
Cream of tartar The full name for cream of tartar is potassium hydrogen tartrate. It is an acid salt, so the acid and salt work together to make a fabulous paste for cleaning tarnished silver.
Laundry Detergent Stain fighting laundry detergent can fight both stains and tarnish. Dissolve a small amount of detergent in warm water. Soak your tarnished silver for at least 30 minutes and gently dry with a cotton cloth.

his year, as always, the Royal British Legion paid tribute to all the British and Commonwealth servicemen and women who fell in any of the many conflicts of the last 100 years. Our Festival of Remembrance was held in the Lower Salon of the Caves restaurant in Maro and 200 people came to pay their respects. In a simple act of homage “We Remembered Them”. The 2 minute silence coincided with the 11.00 o’clock silence held in London, and the whole commemoration was aimed at allowing people here to feel part of the greater ceremony of Remembrance elsewhere. Nick Ball, Trevor and Judy Breech, and Dave Allen each reminded us of the horrific human sacrifices made in different conflicts during the last 100 years and Mike Holt told us very emotively of the dreadful conditions and losses

that the horse had to endure, all the more poignant because it was told with personal experience. Wreaths were laid by Captain Del Hamilton representing the Personnel Recovery Centre in Edinburgh, Charlie Howe - the Royal Navy, Nick Ball - Special Services, Trevor Breech - Royal Air Force, Dorothy Allen - The Royal British Legion, Ian Mortimer - the Merchant Navy, Steve Adams - Combatants and Non Combatant Civilians and Jan Castelain on behalf of the people of Flanders. The message I think is that we must continue to recognise the awful effect of war on everyone involved no matter which side we support, and hope that future generations will find the will and means to solve problems peacefully – a vain hope perhaps looking at the world today, but one which politicians and leaders must continue to strive for. Prior to Remembrance Day on Friday 7th we held our annual Poppy Ball and 136 happy diners and dancers attended, and very generously bought raffle tickets to the tune of 750 euros - a wonderful

Place the silver in the pan and let soak for 5 minutes (make sure the silver is completely immersed in the mixture). Many prizes were donated, and we thank Baker’s Bar, Genesis Bar and Restaurant, Ozzie’s Hairdresser, ABC Nail Bar, Sandra Simpson, and Jaipur Indian restaurant for their kind generosity. We really appreciate your donations. Our thanks too, go to all who have contributed in any way to our 2014 Poppy Appeal. Without your support, we would not be able to send the very healthy amount that we will be able to send to help those men, women and families to whom we owe a huge debt. Happy Family...? Or Festive Family Feud? Those people who have harmonious relationships with their families should thank their lucky stars! How wonderful to sit around the festive table with feelings of excitement and a warm glow inside.
T
here are many families however, who tend to favour bickering and squabbling rather than happy, chatty conversation. The idea of a family Christmas can fill many people with dread! The mere thought of gathering around the dinner table with some relatives can make you want to escape quickly to a far off land! When Mum criticises Brother, Sister starts on Aunty, Dad rows with Uncle and Grandad picks a fight with the Sister in law, you end up feeling ready to explode and shout at all of them. What should be a happy occasion ends up turning into a huge family conflict and a stressful experience. If you have children, it is worrying that they are exposed to this "not so festive spirit".
What can you do about these family Christmas feuds? Perhaps sharing your feelings with whoever is hosting the family meal prior to the event, in an effort to try and resolve the issues. If you know the personalities that clash, speak to them in a kind and concerned way. For example, "Its lovely that we get together at Christmas but it seems when we do there is stress, tension and friction. Please let's try to figure out what is causing this and make some changes so we can all enjoy ourselves." Or how about inviting someone new to the Christmas occasion in order to change the dynamic, in the hope that it forces people to behave themselves and think about what they say and how they act. Other stress reducers include suggesting
everyone helps with the meal preparation by making one dish themselves or perhaps ditching the giving of adult presents to prevent any arguments on what you have bought each other, and how much has been spent etc. If the host refuses to acknowledge your feelings, perhaps you need to think about what you are going to do this year? Can you make other arrangements easily that would be more enjoyable and less stressful with other family or friends? Obviously the best idea would be if the family can put aside their differences for a day, especially for the sake of the children. Try and set yourself up for success. Try not to drink too many of those sherries and stay focused and in control of the situation. Control your responses to people by thinking first and not being on auto-pilot. If you feel a rush of annoyance, excuse yourself from the situation by taking a trip to the bathroom and try and stay calm. Take some deep breaths and slow down the fight or flight response. If you are concerned you will fly off the handle, have a friend or family member that you trust help you stay calm. Avoid "hot topics" of conversation that you know are likely to wind people up! Such as the unfair distribution of a late relatives inheritance.

The ABC of choosing a good dental implant A One cannot always trust cheap
offers: It may seem to be a tempting offer you cannot refuse, but do your homework and make sure that the ‘too good to be true’ price is backed up by quality products. Consider the cost of the implant and materials alone.
B Question the details: Only titanium implants should be considered as they offer the best integration with the bone. Ensure that the implants have been approved by the Dental Association.
C If in doubt, ask for another opinion. If you're confused, do not rush due into a discounted deal. Go to another dentist and ask for a second opinion. The Nieves Carmona Dental Clinic would like to wish all our patients every happiness and health this Christmas

Health Fact
Like the nose, the ears are composed of cartilage and will continue to get bigger through your lifetime (something else to look forward to as you get old !!)
Two excellent foods for better digestion A healthy, balanced diet full of raw fruits and vegetables is a good way to help keep digestion strong, because raw fruits and vegetables contain lots of enzymes. Enzymes help with the breakdown of food, so it can be properly absorbed during digestion. Sauerkraut translates into "sour cabbage"; it's made by pickling cabbage with lactic-acidproducing bacteria. This high-fibre, low-carb superfood is rich in probiotics, also known as friendly bacteria, which is very good news for the digestive system. In some cases, digestion can be sluggish or nearly non-existent due to a lack of friendly bacteria, which make up the intestinal flora. Sauerkraut can help replenish the intestinal flora, which, in turn, helps improve digestion. Re-populating the intestinal flora is also beneficial to the immune system. Beetroot is another superfood that is also high in fibre and is low in calories. Potassium, manganese, magnesium and copper are just some of the nutrients found in this superfood. Beetroot is also rich in folates which are necessary for DNA synthesis inside the cells; for this reason, expectant mothers are given folic acid. This root is also rich in betaine, which has homocysteine-lowering properties. Homocysteine is a toxic metabolite that promotes platelet clotting and the formation of atherosclerotic-plaque, which can be damaging to blood vessels. Coronary heart disease, stroke and peripheral vascular diseases can be caused by high levels of homocysteine in the blood.
4 ways to improve liver function Everyday touches with toxins in our food, air, water, personal care, and household products has created a burden on this hard working organ Incorporate proper foods and eating habits - You need to rest your digestive tract by eating smaller and lighter meals that are nutrient dense and easily assimilated and always stopping when you feel around 80% full. Some good options that fit this bill are low sugar smoothies, juices, salads, soups, and fermented foods like sauerkraut and coconut kefir.
Eliminate foods, products, and daily habits that hurt your liver - On the flip side, you need to eliminate or largely
avoid foods and habits that will slow down or compromise liver function. This includes eating fats from animal meat, butter, dairy, and vegetable oils. Refined flour products, sugar, alcohol, and caffeine will also weaken the liver, primarily due to digestive distress and excessive sugar/starch handling that is required. Avoiding any foods that are GMO is also incredibly important.
Consume liver detoxifying foods and herbs - To crank up
your liver detoxification a bit more, focus on foods and herbs that are noted as being especially cleansing to the liver, including: Broccoli, Cabbage, Beetroot, Garlic, Onions, Walnuts, Avocados, Apples, Grapefruit, Leafy green vegetables, Sauerkraut, Coconut kefir. Popular herbs that are well known to clean up liver function include: Milk thistle, Dandelion, Burdock root, Artichoke, Turmeric.
Improve your digestion - The gastrointestinal tract serves as
the first line of defence once toxins have entered the body. If it becomes compromised, it allows disease causing agents to take root, often to the point that they break through the intestinal membrane and get into the bloodstream. Once the bowels have become toxic, the rest of the body will soon follow. If the intestines keep on letting toxins through, the liver will bear most of the burden of eliminating these toxins by filtering and rendering these substances harmless and excreting them out of the body through the urine and stool. This is why improving your digestion is critical, to ensure there is not an excessive and consistent stream of toxins for your liver to deal with, or it will eventually become severely compromised. 48 THE MARKET PLACE
Q: Health Tracking - What is the most important thing to Track? To improve your health, track factors that have an impact on your 'real age', such as stress, sleep, smoking, diet and exercise. But if you're going to choose one thing, track your steps: More steps tend to lead to more healthy choices. I've found that when people track their steps, their weight tends to come down a little bit, and they choose healthier things to eat because they’ve just spent an hour walking around, and now they’re in a mindset that their activity is impacting their health. Conversely, I don't recommend tracking weight. It's so hard to change and people get hung up on it and frustrated when they miss their goals. With steps, you can hit your goal every day if you put your mind to it.
Brain Fog What causes brain fog?
Brain fog can be caused by any dysfunction of the body that inhibits the brain from receiving proper nutrition. It can be associated with chronic inflammation, autoimmune disease, poor diet, heavy metal toxicity, fluoride accumulation, vitamin deficiencies.
How to cure brain fog
Exercise - Absolutely the first step, and in most cases it's all anyone needs. Detox - Rid the body of heavy metals and toxins. Eat right - Nutrient dense foods give the body the means to cleanse and heal. Supplement - Boost with the right vitamins, minerals, and herbs to restore balance.

News from local animal charities TAIL (Torrox Animal International League) As we approach Christmas it’s good to be able to say that Tail has received notification of two early out of the blue gifts. The first from one of our major supporters, Tienda Animal in Malaga but now trading in much of Europe, which will provide the wherewithal to supply the Refuge with a considerable amount of dog food each month. The second came as the cherry on the cake the day after our recent 4th autumn Dog Show in November. Ruta 340, who provide sponsorship to many of Tail’s events, had one of those gatherings at their premises on Peñoncillo where hundreds of bikers from far and wide congregate. Well, Ruta 340 set them a challenge that boiled down to beer in exchange for dog food. We were blown away with the numbers of sacks of dog biscuits that were delivered to Tail. Your scribe will never again grumble about the constant stream of bikers arriving on the Costa. As always Tail is enormously grateful for the support and sponsorship that the charity receives from individuals and commercial enterprises (whom we publicise at our major events) and we should also include other associations who dedicate a day or event to Tail. Photos of our recent most successful Dog Show may be seen on our facebook page - tail torrox

She is less shy than she used to be, but would benefit from being with someone with a little patience for drawing her out. She has personality for sure. C.A.S. (Costa Animal Society) Fined for animal cruelty : Boris’s story A 29-year-old Málaga man has been fined 6,000 euros after being found guilty of animal cruelty and injuring a passer-by who tried to stop him. Luckily, the story of the dog which was being maltreated has a happy ending. In August, a couple from Torrox intervened after seeing a dog being kicked while it was being walked. Without saying a word, the dog walker struck the male passer-by in the eye causing him to fall to the ground, where he was kicked and punched before his attacker walked off. The victim was taken to hospital for treatment and took almost three weeks fully to recover. When the suspect, who had previous convictions, was approached by National Police officers, he is reported to have become aggressive, trying to kick and head butt. No-one was injured but he was restrained and detained, and was charged with resisting authority. Police said that local residents told officers that the dog, which was owned by the attacker’s flatmate, was frequently seen being 50 THE MARKET PLACE
maltreated by the suspect. They said the condition of the dog had previously caused a complaint to Gruprona, the nature protection division of the local police, which inspected the animal. It was reported to be extremely thin, covered in parasites and walking with a limp. Since the incident, a vet has removed the ball and socket joint at the top of one back leg, and, as the dog is young, the remaining bones will fuse in time, although he will always have a limp. Boris The Costa Animal Society advertised for a foster or permanent home for the dog and, within a short time, Patrick from Motril responded. He runs two dog-friendly self-catering holiday homes at Costa Tropical Oasis and already had Hector, a young lively cocker spaniel, and an older St Bernard called Dino. Patrick has now adopted Boris permanently and says that his new family member is getting stronger and growing fast. Initially he could only use three legs, said Patrick, but is now back to using all four, while in seven weeks, his weight has increased by half. “He’s now a now super happy dog and very playful with my other two rescues,” he added. “He loves life here, loves meeting the tourists staying on holiday and digging up the plants.” Pictures of Boris, Hector and Dino can be viewed on Patrick’s Facebook page, costaoasis.

Scruffs raises over 2,000E for CAS November’s annual Dog Show, Scruffs 2014, raised 2,200 euros for the Costa Animal Society, a new record. There were 83 entries in the 12 competitive classes with over 200 people enjoying the carnival atmosphere of the afternoon. This was the 15 such event organized by CAS which would like to acknowledge the support from Nerja Town Hall, and especially the exception efforts made by Jackie from the Foreigners’ Department and Councillor Inocencia Quintero. Thanks also to all the volunteers who made it all happened, to the sponsors whose generosity is greatly appreciated and to everyone, human and canine, who came along on the day. All the cash raised will go directly to the care and homing of abandoned dogs and cats. CAS also views Scruffs as an opportunity to raise awareness about its endeavours and to educate the public on caring for

was once a sleepy fishing village but now the town has a population of over 21,000. The Balcón de Europa is a magnificent promenade that was made famous by King Alfonso XII , who’s statue now takes pride of place at the far end. Close by is the 17th century Church of El Salvador, and the beautiful gardens of Capistrano Playa. The town boasts an active Centro de Cultura, and a new attraction is The Fuente de Europa in Verano Azul Park, which is a very impressive monument, made from pieces of stone donated from EU member states. There are many beaches to be found either side and in front of the town, including Burriana with its numerous cafés and restaurants. Here too, you can take advantage of the water sports on offer, including water skiing, scuba diving and sailing. Just outside Nerja on the coast road towards Maro is a very impressive aquaduct which used to supply the local sugar factory, but is now used to carry water to local farms.

Torre del Mar
is just 30 minutes from Malaga, and is the beach resort of Velez Málaga. Its population of 21,000 grows between June and September to 150,000. The towns attractions have expanded over the last few years to cope with the demand, and now the four kilometres of beach have been enhanced by an impressive promenade, which stretches all the way to Caleta de Vélez, a port providing over 200 berths and offering sailing and water sports. Throughout the summer, there are many Chiringuitos on the beach, serving fresh barbequed fish and ice cold beers. In 2002, Paseo de Larios was pedestrianized, and is now a tranquil promenade, with plenty of pavement cafés and restaurants. At the seafront end of Larios is a line of bars and discos which continue throughout the night on Fridays and Saturdays. The history of Torre is uncertain, but it is thought that it might have been part of an ancient Greek settlement, known as Mainake, which was destroyed by the Carthaginians. Tombs of the Carthaginians were found at the mouth of the river Velez. More recently, it was a small fishing village until major development began in the 1970’s.

La Herradura
nestles between the Punta de la Mona to the east and the rock of Cerro Gordo to the west. The bay enjoys shelter from west winds creating mostly crystal-clear waters, and is a popular location for water sports & paragliding. There are numerous beach bars and restaurants serving specialities of the region, including tropical salads, fresh fish or paella. The Marina del Este near La Herradura is tucked betwen Punta de la Mona to the west and Cotobro to the east. It boasts a beautiful port, elegantly designed to incorporate select shops, art galleries, bars and restaurants. This small strip of coast also claims to be the best place to dive between Almeria and Gibraltar, and is home to one of the areas leading diving schools.

Lake Viñuela
is a 15 minute drive from the N340 Autovia, leaving at the junction for Velez Malaga. Head inland along the A356; this direction also leads to numerous inland white villages. The first turning on our map is to Benamocarra, which is sign posted to the right after the last roundabout into Velez Malaga. This road will take you back over the main road and then also on to Iznate, and divides to take you to Almachar, El Borge and Cutar. The second turning off the A356 is on the right (after the Repsol garage) to Trapiche. Continue on the A356, and immediately you will see another junction on the left, sign posted to Benamargosa, Triana, Comares and Cutar. This road will also take you as far as Rio Gordo (for a scenic drive). There is a popular Spanish bar on the corner of this junction called El Cruz. Back on the A356, continue on and you will pass another junction on the right, to Canillas de Aceituno, and finally you will see Lake Vinuela in front of you. Turn right before the lake for Puente de Don Manuel, Alcaucin, Viñuela and Periana; carry straight on for Los Romanes, Rio Gordo and Colmenar.

Frigiliana
encompass 39.74 sq km within which live just over 3,000 people year round. Frigiliana is a popular tourist destination, and because there are many holiday homes here, the population triples during the summer months. The history of Frigiliana dates from prehistoric times. The village has been inhabited by numerous civilisations from the Phoenicians and Romans to the Arabs, who had the greatest impact on the town’s development. During the Christian reconquest, Frigiliana was the site of numerous battles culminating in the famous battle of the Rock of Frigiliana in 1569 which ended in the complete expulsion of the Moorish people. One can learn the history of this struggle by walking through the streets of the historic section where there are a series of twelve ceramic plaques posted about which explain the entire story.
