Local News Local News Local News Earthquakes hit Andalucia An Earthquake near Morocco caused a ripple in Andalucía, sparking over 70 calls to emergency services on 21st January. The epicentre was halfway between Alhucemas, to the east of Tangiers, and the Spanish-owned cityprovince of Melilla, close to the Algerian border. It measured 4.9 on the Richter scale when it was recorded at 14.47hrs and, although it was felt in Málaga, Granada and Jaén, no damage was caused in mainland Spain. Just 10 minutes later, at 14.57hrs, an aftershock measuring 3.0 on the Richter scale came again near Alhucemas, Morocco. This time, it provoked a flood of calls from Málaga city, Vélez-Málaga, and Motril on the Granada province coast. Again, though, no damage was recorded in mainland Spain, but in the Spanish enclave of Melilla lamps shook, furniture trembled and at least two buildings were damaged. An even bigger quake occured in the early hours of Monday 25th January, again in the Mediterranean sea 62kms north of the Moroccan city of Al Hoceima. The 6.3 magnitude quake was followed by a 5.3 magnitude tremor and was felt throughout the Malaga region including Cordoba, Seville and Granada. Most affected was the Spanish enclave of Melilla, where concrete fell from buildings and Spanish tv showed footage of people running from buildings in their pyjamas. There were no immediate reports of injuries or deaths.
Owners of the unauthorised Axarquia homes may go to the UN
There are around 50,000 homes mainly in the Axarquia region that still are classed as unauthorised and illegal, the owners of which are fighting to have their rights recognised. Some owners are now working with their lawyers to bring their problem to an even larger audience and are setting up an inquiry with the Committee of Economic, Social and Cultural Rights of the United Nations. At the next SOHA meeting, homeowners will vote on whether they would like to move forward with this as it will cost them around 12,000 Euros + IVA.
Bogus sales markdowns A Spanish consumers group says nine out of 10 people have detected fake discounts on goods in the January sales. Facua – Consumers in Action says over 6 THE MARKET PLACE
2,000 shoppers contributed to its Twitter poll at the end of January. In response to being asked if they had seen false discounts during recent shopping, 88 per cent confirmed that they had spotted discounts which were not genuine, while 25 per cent claimed there were irregularities in almost all the outlets they had visited. Only 12 per cent asserted that they had seen no suspicious discounting during the sales period. Facua has launched a campaign to turn consumers into 'hunters,' seeking out irregularities being committed by some establishments. It recommends that advertisements, catalogues and recent receipts can be used to compare claims of bargains with the true reduction being applied to goods.
Spain’s olive trees 'plundered' by foreign buyers
The EU is being petitioned to take action to protect Spain’s ancient olive trees. A thriving market has developed to uproot and export the trees, the oldest of which can command prices of around 40,000 euros in the international market place. Over the past 20 years, dozens of companies have started selling the trees, many of which die on the journey to their new home. Others may live only another 50 or 100 years, say experts, instead of perhaps another thousand years if they had been left in situ. It appears that buyers want old olive trees, not for their fruit, but for their appearance. Having one as a garden decoration is in vogue in some countries, even where the trees have to be wrapped in thick plastic to protect them from severe northern winters. Andalucía is reported to be one of the worst hit regions, with few olive trees remaining which are more than a century old.
where he will discuss the issues such as abandoning and neutering pets. He will ask for donations on his travels and send any money made to animal shelters and sanctuaries in the places he visits. Antonio has found sponsors for his trip which he hopes will take him up to the Pyrenees and to the North of Spain.
Beach construction in Torrox stopped due to Mollusk
Construction of a breakwater at Torrox's Ferrara beach has been stopped due to the Agriculture and Fishing Department's insistence that the work needs to be done in the closed season of the corruco mollusk, a type of mollusk abundant in the Mediterranean. Officials and the building company hope to get started on the work during February but the actual breakwater construction cannot begin until 1st April, in order to work around the fishing season for the corroco and to prevent damage to its habitat.
More visitors in Frigiliana
Frigiliana town hall says the municipality welcomed 13% more visitors in 2015, compared with the year before. The figure, based on the number of people who used the Tourism Office, shows an increase of 34% in December with rises of 28% in January and February. The peak was achieved during the annual Three Cultures Festival.

Romantic Rome... on the Cheap!
By Jessica Infantino Trumble
Continuing from last month's Rome travel feature, and since it is February and many lovers might be thinking of a romantic escape. But what happens if you have not got enough cash to splash out on a top European city break...? Well, read through the following tips which might change your mind and make you feel like this city is affordable, as long as you take care where you eat and what you do. And don't forget it all starts with obtaining a cheap flight ... check out Ryanair.com, who operate a direct flight into Rome from our very own Malaga airport ...
I
took a business class in Rome one summer and on the first night, my classmates and I went out to enjoy a big Italian dinner together. We found an adorable restaurant and chose a table outside so we could eat al fresco, and bonded over good food and even better wine. All was perfect until we got the bill. Little did we realise that our cute little restaurant was in the heart of touristy Rome (right off Via del Corso), hence the inflated price. At this rate, we wouldn’t be able to afford to eat out every night. I will say that the chicken cacciatore was some of the best I’ve ever had, but when I visited Rome again a few years later, I was determined to experience la dolce vita and still have some euros to spare. With that, here are some tips to help you save money in Rome, which is reason enough to treat yourself to an extra gelato.
free concert or festival going on in Rome. Kicking back in one of the city’s many piazzas or strolling through colourful neighbourhoods like Trastevere or Testaccio are other great ways to spend an afternoon. Chances are that other sites like the Colosseum and Castel Sant’Angelo are also on your list of things to see in Rome, which is why the city’s Roma Pass is a
Attractions One great thing about Rome is that many top sites are free. The Spanish Steps, the Pantheon, Villa Borghese, the Trevi Fountain (except for the coin you throw in to ensure a trip back to Rome) and churches including St. Peter’s Basilica are all accessible without opening your wallet. Even the Vatican Museum has free admission on the last Sunday of the month. It’s also a good idea to check local events calendars since there always seems to be a 12 THE MARKET PLACE

good investment. The pass is valid for 3 days and grants you free entry to 2 of more than 45 participating museums, monuments and archaeological sites, as well as discounts on other sites. You also get direct access at the first 2 sites (hooray, no queueing). Another perk is that the pass also covers public transportation (metro, bus and tram) during the 3 day period, whereas a regular 3-day ticket would cost 16.50 euros. It comes with a map of all the participating sites, but you can also download the new Roma Pass companion app, which has information on the sites and other events happening in Rome. The Roma Pass costs 30 euros and can be purchased at any participating site, online or at PTI tourist information points and ATAC ticket offices. To save time, I order my Roma Pass online and pick it up at the Fiumicino airport as soon as I arrive in Rome so that I can hit the ground running. Here’s a tip: make one of your free sites the cumulative ticket for the Colosseum, Roman Forum and Palatine Hill (which would cost around 12 euros), and you’re already on your way to getting your money’s worth.
Eating As I learned on my first night in Rome, eating out can be a potentially expensive venture – that is unless you know where to look. One of the things I’ve found the most beneficial is to stay in an apartment rather than a hotel. I’ve rented apartments three different times, which in itself has a lot of perks like cheaper rates (especially if you’re traveling with several people) and a place to spread out and call home while you’re in Rome. Apartment rentals are often stocked with basic cookware, which gives you the opportunity to prepare some of your meals at home. Saving on even a few breakfasts or dinners during your trip can go a long way. The best way to take advantage of your home away from home is to shop locally. I love browsing the stalls of fresh produce in markets like Campo de’ Fiori or Mercato Trionfale, as well as the aisles of a supermercato, where you can pick up everything you’ll need to prepare an authentic Italian meal. Another alternative to eating at home is to pick up some fruit, olives, cheese, meat and bread to assemble a picnic that you can enjoy in a park for a leisurely lunch.
A few other tips to help you save on food and drink: Stand versus sit – In bars and cafés, tables are often more expensive 14 THE MARKET PLACE
(especially tables outside) than if you order and eat standing at the bar. This is perfect for a quick breakfast of a cappuccino and cornetto or afternoon espresso pick-me-up. Lunch versus dinner – You can usually get the same great meal for less by eating earlier in day. It’s also a good idea to check menu boards outside for daily specials, or if you’re traveling with others, you can share a primi and secondi piatti or order a few antipasti to go around. Get it to-go – Instead of a sit-down lunch, grab a piece of pizza or a panino for a quick and easy bite that won’t slow down your sightseeing. Just be careful not to eat or drink in areas of “particular historic, artistic, architectonic and cultural value”. Wait, isn’t that the entire city of Rome?
Check the menu for add-ons – Servizio incluso means that the gratuity is already included in the menu price, and pane e coperto is a “bread and cover” charge, usually a few euros, which you’ll pay even if you don’t eat the bread. Look for these phrases on the menu to know what kind of fees you’ll be subject to. Everyone loves to save money, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t treat yourself at least a few times while traveling, especially in a city like Rome. After all, what better place to do as the Romans do?
Drink the water – Bottled water from street vendors can cost you at least at euro a pop (or even more in touristy areas). Since it’s important to stay hydrated, it’s more economical to buy a bottle once and refill it at one of the many nasoni fountains throughout the city, which provide clean, cold and free drinking water. And drink the wine – House wine that is. Vino della casa is the best deal if you’re budget-minded, and can be ordered in various-sized carafes, un quarto (quarterlitre), un mezzo (half-litre) and un litro (one-litre).

DO I NEED TO INSURE MY VEHICLE EVEN IF IT’S OFF THE ROAD? Some insurance policies like medical cover are not compulsory, others such as fire protection for your property, are. Your vehicle however, must be insured at all times, even if it’s kept off the road in a garage. The minimum legal compulsory insurance is Civil Liability to cover any damage to or claims from a third party, resulting from your vehicle. The existing legislation (Royal Decree 8/2004) states that any car that is kept in Spain must be insured. Trailers and other special types of vehicles that weigh less than 750 kg and cannot be driven on Spanish roads are not required to have insurance. This also means that they cannot be parked on roads or kept on private land. If you own a vehicle that’s not insured you could face a fixed penalty from E601 up to E3,005, and your vehicle may be seized and immobilised.
161
WHY DO I NEED TO INSURE MY CAR IF ITS KEPT IN A PRIVATE GARAGE
The owner of a vehicle has a civil responsibility towards their neighbour and their property. Civil responsibility extends beyond car accidents on Spanish roads. If a vehicle, for example, kept in a communal garage, has a fire due to a short circuit, the owner will be responsible for any resulting damages to third parties. The owner will also be liable for a fixed penalty fine, the amount will depend on the gravity of the situation, the length of time the vehicle has been without insurance, and if this is a repeat offense.
IN WHAT CIRCUMSTANCES IS INSURANCE NOT COMPULSORY?
If your vehicle has officially been temporarily or permanently taken out of circulation, for example it has been scrapped, then no insurance is required. If you own a vehicle that is not being used and you wish to avoid paying for insurance, then you can apply to have it temporarily taken out of circulation. However, to 16 THE MARKET PLACE
do this the vehicle needs to have passed its MOT. If the MOT has expired, then it must be taken again and passed, before applying.
HOW CAN I AVOID ANY FIXED PENALTY FINES The best option is to ensure you have adequate insurance protection for your vehicle at all times. Once your vehicle complies with Spanish regulations, you can then decide what the future use of your vehicle will be, and whether or not to keep it in circulation or take it out. If you require an insurance policy for your vehicle, you can contact Línea Directa on 902 123 161. They can supply you with a fast and efficient quote for either third party or fully comprehensive insurance.

Infiniti Q30
Global Press Launch, Lisbon This all new C-Sector hatch from Japanese company Infiniti should ruffle a few feathers in a fiercely competitive sector of the market.

The exterior design will not be to everyone’s taste, some will love it and say it really stands out in a crowd and is very different. the people in Sunderland. The stitching on the leather is first class and the dash looks like it is from a very expensive large premium executive saloon fit for royalty. A lot of thought and money has gone into the cabin and it is a very nice place to sit for hour after hour. The one thing I really didn’t like was the position of the electric parking brake which is situated by your left knee on left-hand drive, and on the right on right-hand drive cars. It is difficult to find and a bit flimsy and in the case of an emergency the front passenger has no chance of slowing the car down, unless they lean across the driver's lap and try and reach out for it, which is not easy and totally impractical. On the manual car we drove there was no auto-release and no hill-hold which made it difficult setting off from an incline. Infiniti did say that other manufacturers have the brake in a similar position, which they do, but that doesn’t mean they are right. Infiniti gave us a 27 page press pack with all the specs, stats, tech data, engineering stuff, design blurb, steering and handling and chassis information that took some reading and got highly technical, some of which went right over my head. But in layman’s language and without the use of their words the Infiniti drives really well, is quiet and refined, with the exception of the wind noise from door mirrors. It sits on the road like it is on rails and the steering is very precise and goes exactly where you want it to. The brakes are just right and it stops easily without any effort: you feel totally in control of this car. There are certainly masses of safety features fitted as standard. The Infiniti Q30 on balance is a good looking car, although it may not be in everyone’s eyes. It is well built and priced right. It is very different to look at and will attract new customers to this relatively unknown Japanese brand. It also has lots of standard equipment and prices start from £20,550. A lack of dealers may put some off, but it really is a car to get noticed in. In the end, I really did start to like it, but it took some getting there. If anyone wants a copy of their 27 page press release then I’m happy to send it; it would be a good bedtime read…

2016 Colour Trends: Are you going to paint your home? This year, world authority on colour systems, Pantone Inc., has chosen two dominant colours for 2016: Rose Quartz and Serenity... Pantone, Leroy Merlin and ALP have joined in their passion for the world of colour and paint, to create and distribute a unique collection that was available from January 2016.
Rose Quartz and Serenity, Colours of the Year The Rose Quartz, a sweet tone between pink pastel and pink suit that invites us to reflect on what surrounds us during the spring and summer, it will delight those seeking an air of romantic and sophisticated style. Without leaving the pastel shades, Blue Serenity, a clear turquoise defined by PANTONE® as serenity that evokes the colour of the sky. It is a tone that has a calming effect, it brings a sense of relief. Both colours will be present in the new collection of ALP Inspired by PANTONE® - available exclusively in Leroy Merlin stores.
A softer take on colour for 2016 For the first time, the blending of the two shades, Rose Quartz and Serenity, have been chosen as the PANTONE Colour of the Year. As consumers seek mindfulness and well-being as an antidote to modern day stresses, welcoming colours that psychologically fulfill our yearning for reassurance and security are becoming more prominent. "Blended together, Rose Quartz and Serenity demonstrate an inherent balance between a warmer embracing rose tone and the cooler tranquil blue, reflecting connection and wellness as well as a soothing sense of order and peace" says Leatrice Eiseman, Executive Director of Pantone Colour Institute®. The prevalent combination of Rose Quartz and Serenity also challenges traditional perceptions of colour association. In many parts of the world we are experiencing a gender blur as it relates to fashion, which has in turn impacted colour trends throughout all other areas of design. This more unilateral approach to colour is coinciding with societal movements toward gender equality and fluidity, the consumer’s increased comfort with using colour as a form of expression, a generation that has less concern about being typecast or judged and an open exchange of digital information that has opened our eyes to different approaches to colour usage. 20 THE MARKET PLACE

Three Great Families and their Gardens: a history of Mexico City to Campeche the Astors, the Rothschilds and the Sackville Wests Colonial cites and Ancient Sites Lecture by Caroline Rayman
Lecture by Kate Hayes
Sponsor: The Jonathan Anderson Memorial Lecture
Three Great Families and their Gardens is the story of three very different, but hugely successful families, the Sackville Wests, the Astors and the Rothschilds. The Sackville Wests have been part of the establishment since Tudor times and the other two families are wealthy immigrants who came to England in the l9th century. The talk traces the history of the families, discusses their contribution to life in England and celebrates the splendid gardens that they have created.
About Caroline Rayman Caroline Rayman has lectured for many years to universities and art organisations in America and on cruise boats. She was an official guide at the British Museum and has published articles on samplers. Her lectures range from the role of the royal mistress in history to more scholarly lectures like on Frederick the Great of Prussia.
In February and March 2015 Kate and Martyn Hayes travelled to Mexico. They visited four colonial cities. Their final destination was Mexico City. Kate will show you some of their photos, tell you about some of the things that fascinated her and share some of their experiences. Mexico City Pyramid of the Niches, Papantla Olmec Head, Villahermosa Frida Kahlo's house
About Kate Hayes Kate has been a member of the society for many years and served on the committee for 4 years, acting as our “dinner lady”, Coordinator for Social and Hosting.
The Royal British Legion Nerja Branch By the time you are reading this we will be well into the new year, Christmas will just be a memory and we will probably be thinking of summer holidays, maybe our own but more likely family ones where we become the providers of hotel facilities, lengthy lunches, BBQs and long evenings enjoying beautiful Andalusian sunsets. Just looking at the weather in the UK at present makes you realise how fortunate we are to live here, doesn’t it? We all know that we have to have the rain, the wind and probably some cold weather, but at least we can look forward with some certainty to warm and sunny days ahead.
to provide support to the men, women and families who pay for our freedom and peace. Therefore we must continue our efforts to raise money for the cause. This year we have a programme of events to just that end and we hope you will continue to give us your support.
The weather isn’t the only thing we should be grateful for though. While presently we enjoy the freedom of Spain, so many other places are affected by recent terror attacks and our world, seemingly ever growing smaller, is also becoming more dangerous. No sooner have our troops pulled out of Afghanistan, than we will be involved in more conflict in the Middle East. Meanwhile our Forces are carrying out duties in many parts of the world in peacekeeping and protection and our RAF is involved in air strikes against IS. World peace is once again a distant dream.
Thanks to the generosity of our members and friends and the public, we have donated over E9000 to the Poppy Appeal this year. This is an incredible amount and we are very grateful to all who contributed.
While ever there is conflict, there will be a constant need for organisations like ours 22 THE MARKET PLACE

Transfinito : exhibition by jose maria yturralde at the Malaga Centre for Contemporary Art until 29th February
The Plaza de la Constitución and the Historic Centre of Málaga are taken over by buskers, carnival troupes, and quartets who sing for anyone and everyone passing by. These groups perform from 31 January to 6 February during what is known as the Street Carnival Week. It lasts almost a month, culminating on 7 February with the Entierro del Boquerón, or Burial of the Sardine. During month of Carnival, Málaga, its streets, and its theatres are filled with costumes, music, and a lot of magic. Every day of Carnival is filled with special events such as the competitions, parades, and shows that make up this popular celebration.
Carnival of Flour of Alozaina
19th February - 21st February Plaza de la Constitucion Every year, the Flour Festival (also known as the Flour Carnival) is the first date on Alozaina's festive calendar. In this unique event, it's traditional for the locals to roam around the town, carrying a bag of flour and trying to cover other inhabitants in flour. This is just one of the many activities that takes place among the special events that are related to the Carnival. According to tradition, the Flour Festival originates from the young men who, in order to show their interest in a young woman, chased after her and threw flour over her. Any way of achieving their aim was valid: from scaling a fence to climbing down a chimney.
singles awareness day 15th february A humorous day to celebrate being single, to share with single friends, to send each other presents or even order yourself some flowers. On this day many people wear green, as it is the complementary opposite of red. Contrary to popular misconceptions, Singles Awareness Day is not about selfpity but rather a chance to announce to the world that you are single and happy to be so!
Transfinito is an exhibition put on for the first time in Spain. The exhibition is divided into three series: Eclipses, Enzo y Horizontes (Eclipses, Ensos and Horizons). The first focuses on the void, nothingness, light and silence and deals with an ancestral question: the reason for the beginning, the beginning of time, the beginning of everything. The works of the Enso series (Enso is a word of Japanese origin that means circle) are related to the world of Zen and symbolise the universe, the infinite and the void. Finally, the paintings of the Horizons series explore the possibilities of colour, texture and matter and delve into the ideas that exist in relation to space, time, the infinite and the sublime.

the nerja carnival 2016 4th to 7th February 2016 Nerja becomes even more attractive than usual in February. It's decorated with light, colour and imagination during the Carnival, which will be celebrated from 4 to 7 February this year. Magic fills the streets of a town that is transformed in order to enjoy this festival in a unique manner. Nerja receives visitors from all over the province of Málaga. People from neighbouring towns such as Frigiliana, Vélez-Málaga and Torrox, and tourists from further afield, come specially for the occasion as they don't want to miss this festival. During these four days there are lots of activities for children, adults and the whole family. Some examples of these are the colourful and spectacular parades, including Nerja Carnival's Grand Parade and the so-called Entierro del Chanquete.

These eleven pieces are: Temptation, Paparazzi, Shopping, Mortified, Prisoner, Dreamer, Mystic, Wardrobe, "It Girl", Top Model and Actress. Each one of them evokes a lack of rationality when it comes to making purchases, and the competitiveness of the present society we live in, which feeds on images. Campo Life "The Almond Blossom" Here's the message to all you coastal dwellers: make an effort this February to explore the Spanish countryside, it really is spectacular at this time of year.
W
ith all the amazing sunshine we are having this winter, the almond blossom is now in full bloom. The campo looks like a sea of soft white and pink, almost like cotton wool balls. On sunny days (which seem to be most days this winter) the delicate hues of pink and white melt into the backdrop of the Axarquia hillsides and mountains. The spectacle has inspired many writers, painters and photographers including the very famous Vincent Van Gogh who painted "The Blossoming Almond Tree" and gave it to his nephew to celebrate his birth. But you don't have to be creative, it is enough to just get out and walk in the countryside - what is normally a simple affair turns into a wildly romantic experience, also perfect if you want to enjoy some quality romantic time with your loved one. (hint, hint Valentine's Day!!)
One of the best places to walk amongst the almond blossom is right here in the Axarquia. It is definitely worth visiting the village of Arenas to walk through one of the most stunning areas of almond blossom in the whole province of Malaga. Or, if you don't or cannot walk, just take a drive out in the car, continue along the road at the back of Arenas to the town of Daimalos Vados, known for it's conserved 13th century Moorish minaret which is now also the bell tower of the church of Cristo de la Salud. You can continue past Corumbela and on towards Archez and finally drive back down the Competa road to either Torrox or Algarobbo. Or for those with a bit more sense of adventure, there is also a Ruta de los Almendros which transforms the landscape above Malaga city, the villages of Alora, Almogia, Cartama and Pizarra. The Guadalhorce valley is also known as Malaga's gardens. Take the MA423 to Almogia. You can see the contrast in light of the almond blossom stretching out in front of you compared to the green trees and fields around them. Or for the walkers/hikers out there, try a walk starting from Fabrica de la Luz, a picnic area which hugs the natural park near Competa. The walk takes you up to the top of Cerro Verde, which involves quite a climb but well worth the effort. From La Fabrica, take the route following the Cuevas river, this path takes you past terrace after terrrace of the beautiful almond trees and also some sweet chestnuts. After that you meet a gravel track which you climb up before the last climb to the peak. The views at the top are amazing. It is best to book a guide unless you are an experienced hiker on these types of walks, it is a full days walking and unexperienced walkers can easily veer off the beaten track and get lost. It is said the almond trees were first introduced into Cordoba one thousand years ago by Al Mutamid, the Ruler of Seville. One of his wives came from the North of Spain and missed the snows, so Al Mutamid wanted to please her and had an idea. He brought almond trees from North Africa and planted them throughout the plains and mountains near Cordoda.

The next winter the trees flowered abundantly and the landscape looked like it had been covered in snow! Today almond trees live on in Andalucia, it being of the world's greatest producers of almonds. In fact it is second only to the USA. Andalucia currently has 150,000 hectares of almond production area. The average production in Cartama, Malaga has been 40,000 tonnes in the past five years. The company Almensur is a cooperative that receives almonds from all provinces of Andalusia . The cooperative employs 50 people and has a turnover of 15 million euros. The sale of almonds includes all processed variations, from almond oil to flour and rolled pastry, as well as the shell as a by-product. Nowadays, nearly 70 percent of its production is intended for export.

Fellowship of The King, Nerja; February Film & Tapas Evening The latest offering in the popular Film & Tapa evenings at FTK in Nerja will be screened at 7.30pm on Friday 12th February at FTK’s premises in Pasaje San Miguel (around the corner from the main Mercadona.) One of the most powerful films of 2015, The Drop Box tells the true story of a humble, hardworking pastor living in South East Asia who had the strength to do something that no one else would. It’s a documentary about how a fiercely tender man, after becoming father to a special needs child, knew he had a deeper calling and how he has since made a remarkable impact saving the lives of unwanted babies in South Korea. Lee Jong-rak has gone to heroic lengths to embrace and protect the most vulnerable members of society. Every year thousands of babies are abandoned and left out in the elements to die. They’re abandoned because they’re born disabled or just because a single mother is shunned by family and neighbours. Lee created a baby box (also known as a drop box) where
mothers could anonymously leave their babies, and that has resulted in many babies being saved from certain death and then adopted. Unfortunately it has also led to controversy as he has no patience with opponents who do not like his way of protecting the innocent. This is a film about passion, belief, hope and courage. Lee and his wife show what it means to work hard for those who are forgotten, who may never be able to repay the good done to them in any way; this humble couple are a beautiful picture of unconditional love. The film explores the physical, emotional and financial toll associated with providing refuge for orphans who would otherwise be abandoned on the streets. It’s tough, yes, (so do remember to bring your tissues with you) but it’s also a story of hope - a reminder that every human life is sacred and worthy of love … and a reminder that we’re never too old to make an impact.
150 million orphans waiting for what seems an eternity - and often is - for families to call their own. All it took for this one programme to begin was someone who had the strength to step forward and say… I care! This is a must-see documentary for anyone that wants to make a difference - you won’t regret watching it - but it just might change how you view your life. Will you dare to join us? For more information ring Jean on 95 252 3895.
South Korea is not the only country grappling with the issue of orphan care. The Drop Box highlights a problem found way too often all across the globe because, worldwide, there are more than Leslie Thomas.
The Nerja Players Story telling or readings are the oldest form of entertainment. The roots of this art lie deep in the history of civilisation, dating back to an era when only a favoured few were literate, and shared their good fortune by reading aloud great stories, myths, legends, plays and poems. Dramatised readings demand skill on the part of the narrators and actors plus the listeners themselves to attain that wondrous quality of acceptance which Samuel Coleridge called “the willing suspension of disbelief”. With this in mind the Nerja Players are pleased to announce that their February programme of Dramatised Readings is as follows;
16th February sees Peter Birch as the Director of “Not Fur Long”. Peter has this to say –
“ I have taken a short story written by Roald Dahl (part of his” Tales of the A dramatized reading of Christopher Unexpected”) and essentially adapted Durang's "Beyond Therapy", one of and staged it as a dramatised reading, Durang's most frequently produced plays. enhanced by selected music links and This farcical comedy focuses on Prudence appropriate sound effects. The Lowdown: Essential Omega-3 Fatty Acids in the Diet
T
he subject of scientific studies around the world, omega-3 fatty acids’ role in heart health is one of the most researched topics in nutrition. While that connection has long been established, omega-3's also offer a long list of additional health benefits that warrant a closer look. To do so, it’s important to understand the basics — what are omega-3s, where can they be found and how much do we need to consume to reap these benefits? Because omega-3 essential fatty acids cannot be made in the body, they must come from food. There are three types: eicosapentaenoic acid, or EPA, and docosahexanoic acid, or DHA (found in marine sources); and alpha-linolenic acid, or ALA (found in plant sources). EPA plays a major role in supporting heart health and may help reduce inflammation in the body, while DHA, an integral part of cell membranes, plays a key role in brain development and function. The conventional understanding has been that ALA must be converted to EPA and DHA in the body to be effective; however, emerging science suggests factors including genetics, health status, gender and dietary habits — especially the amount of other fatty acids in the diet — can influence this conversion rate. Additionally, recent evidence suggests ALA may have health benefits of its own, independent of the conversion to EPA and DHA. The Best Sources of Omega-3s Fatty fish, such as salmon, is one of the most concentrated sources of EPA and DHA. However, the amount of omega3s varies in wild versus farm-raised and among varieties of fish, such as Chinook or Sockeye salmon. To limit long-term exposure to contaminants and to maintain healthy and sustainable fish populations, choose from a variety of fish. Bluefin and albacore tuna, bluefish, black cod, rainbow trout and mackerel all deliver omega-3 fatty acids. Although they are often overlooked, herring, sardines and anchovies are affordable and sustainably sourced options. Grass-fed meat and dairy products also naturally deliver small doses of omega3s. Although it is debated whether omega-3 needs can be met with ALA sources alone, including them in the diet is a good move. Chia seeds, ground flaxseed and flaxseed oils, seaweed, soybeans and walnuts are all healthy additions to the diet. Vegetarians, vegans and anyone with a confirmed allergy to fish oil can supplement with microalgae to meet EPA 40 THE MARKET PLACE
and DHA needs. Microalgae is the original source of EPA and DHA, and is the primary food source for most fish, so algal oils deliver omega-3s without a fishy aftertaste. Omega-3s and Their Impact on Health This alphabet soup of fatty acids provides significant health benefits. Higher blood levels of omega-3s are associated with heart-protective effects. Eating two to three servings per week of oily fish rich in omega-3s is associated with a lower risk of cardiovascular disease. Depending on the dose, fish oil — from supplements or fish itself — has been shown to modestly reduce blood pressure and reduce triglycerides by as much as 20 percent to 50 percent. For those with a history of heart attack, clinical and population research further suggests eating fatty fish may reduce the risk of death due to a heart attack by up to 9 percent. Evidence regarding the effects of fish oil on depression and dementia is conflicting, and there’s insufficient evidence to support using fish oils for the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease. However, some studies on fish oil supplements show promise in slowing cognitive decline in those with very mild cognitive dysfunction. These outcomes depend on the dose and EPA to DHA ratio, and can vary depending on the population studied. Beyond cardiovascular and brain health, research regarding the impact of omega3s in the body is vast and includes a range of conditions. Population studies suggest young children who eat fish once or more per week have a lower risk of developing eczema. Although some research shows promise, more evidence is needed before health professionals can recommend using fish oils for treating dry eye, improving night vision in children with dyslexia or reducing pain episodes in patients with sickle cell disease. While everyone must consume omega-3 fatty acids, individual needs vary with health status and diet. The American Heart Association recommends healthy
adults eat fatty fish at least twice per week; the World Health Organization recommends 300 milligrams to 500 milligrams of EPA and DHA and 800 milligrams to 1,000 milligrams of ALA daily from food or a supplement. Those with a history of heart disease, heart attack or high triglycerides may further benefit from supplementation. Since there is no one-dose-fits-all approach, a registered dietitian nutritionist and health-care team can help clients determine specific needs. How are Omega-6s Different from Omega-3s? Like omega-3s, omega-6 essential fatty acids must come from food because the body cannot produce them. Omega-6s include linoleic acid, or LA, and gammalinolenic acid, or GLA, found in vegetable oils, nuts and seeds; arachidonic acid, or AA, found primarily in animal fats, including fish; and conjugated linoleic acid, or CLA, found in ruminant meat, such as beef, and dairy. Found naturally in sunflower, safflower, soy and corn oils, linoleic acid is the most highly consumed polyunsaturated fatty acid in the Western diet. There is concern that diets high in omega-6s may overload the enzymes required to convert the omega-3 ALA to EPA and DHA, thereby reducing the conversion rate. Most Western countries consume plenty of omega-6s, so supplementation generally is unnecessary. In fact, the general advice to most people is to decrease their intake of omega-6s and increase omega-3s. Science surrounding omega-6s and their effects on the body continues to emerge: One concern is that excess AA may increase inflammation in the body. However, research suggests this process doesn’t have the same effect on everyone, presenting a research opportunity to explore differences between those of European versus African descent, for example. Current research suggests GLA-rich continued on page 42

evening primrose oil may be effective at reducing symptoms of diabetic neuropathy. Also, combined with fish oils and calcium, evening primrose oil seems to increase bone mineral density and decrease bone turnover in older adults with osteoporosis. There is evidence that, combined with other anti-inflammatory medications, omega-6-rich borage seed oil may reduce symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis by decreasing joint swelling and tenderness. Omega-3 Supplementation and Safety Because omega-3 food sources are limited and many Westerners don’t eat the recommended two servings of fish per week, some people may need supplementation. When evaluating a supplement, ensure it includes both EPA and
DHA, and look for certifications from independent testing organizations to ensure it is high-quality and free of heavy metals and other contaminants. Other than allergies, omega-3s from fish present few safety concerns. However, supplementing with fish oils in excess of 3 grams per day may increase the risk of excessive bleeding in people taking antiplatelet drugs, such as aspirin. In addition, supplementation may suppress the immune and inflammatory response in those with an immunodeficiency such as HIV/ AIDS. Fish oils also can lower blood pressure levels, which may increase the effects of high blood pressure drugs. Taking 3 grams to 9 grams of fish oil per day has been shown to increase LDL blood cholesterol levels in some people. Like many things, more is not always better.

This year, the Costa Animal Society (CAS) will be celebrating its 30th anniversary as a registered charity. The organization was founded in 1986 for the sole purpose of helping abandoned and maltreated dogs and cats and over three decades volunteers have rescued, re-homed and provided care for thousands of animals. This essential work can continue for another 30 years, but only with help from local people. CAS is completely run by volunteers and is entirely funded by donations and from money raised through charity events. The organisation is always looking to expand its volunteer base with opportunities for shop and car boot helpers, as well as filling key roles on the committee. And CAS is always seeking to increase the growing network of fosterers and animal case workers. If you would like to volunteer your time to help CAS, to make a donation of money or items to sell, or to organise a fundraising event, please contact Diana on 679 714 612 or Vera on 95 252 9670.

Local animal charities C.A.S. (Costa Animal Society) Recent CAS rescues Chester is a small white male podenco who was found caught up in a broken wire fence by a volunteer with the Costa Animal Society (CAS). He was in a terrible condition and very frightened, so she took him home and bathed him and kept him for the night. Luckily, he got on very well with her dogs but next day had to go kennels where he has now been for almost a year, waiting for a new home. Chester is very good natured and friendly although a little shy at first. Anyone who could give him lots of CHESTER love in a temporary or permanent home can find out more with a no obligation call to CAS on 679 714 612. Zape is one of eight large hunting dogs which were rescued in Sayalonga last year. He was found to have a high level of leishmaniasis which had contributed to extensive damage to his kidneys and liver. However, a lovely family offered him a home in England, provided that he responded well to treatment. They paid for his kennel and fees and vets’ bills and came to ZAPE Before (left) and after visit him during the two months it took to reduce his infection to an acceptable level. Now, Zape lives with his new family in the UK and has a new friend in another rescued dog which they already had. Our pictures show the poor state Zape was in when and rescued, and how he has recovered to be a fit, lively and loved dog. Flossie was rescued as a kitten by someone on a long holiday in Caleta, who had her neutered and left her with a neighbour on returning to the UK. However, the neighbour was living in rented accommodation where a condition of the rental was no pets, so a home needed to be found urgently for the young cat. It was impossible to find somewhere locally, so after no result was forthcoming, CAS advertised Flossie on its own internet site (casnerja.org) and others. As a result, Flossie left for her new home in Spain just a week later.

Like your food hot and spicy? Then come and enjoy a delicious curry and help the Costa Animal Society (CAS) at the same time. The date is Thursday, February 25 at 8.00pm, the venue is the Fellowship of the King Church in Nerja (in pasaje San Miguel, around the corner from the town centre Mercadona and opposite the Guardia Civil), and the entertainment will be provided by The Flying Dolphins for dancing until midnight. The cost of E20 includes a starter, plus either a spicy or mild main course, as well as beer and wine. Reservations are essential, so please book early for the CAS “Hot and Spicy” fund-raising evening, by calling Diana on 679 714 612 or the CAS office on 95 252 3607.
Could you help CAS? The Costa Animal Society is always in need of more volunteer helpers in a number of areas, so if you have spare time to fill, please make contact! In particular, more fundraisers are needed to work with our team, people are required to help with the feeding of the cats at the numerous feeding stations maintained by CAS, and animal lovers who could undertake a monthly airport run are necessary to take animals being re-homed in northern Europe to catch their flights. In addition, fosterers are always required to take short-term care of animals until a permanent home can be found for them. Even if you are only here for few months a year, CAS would appreciate your help. For a no-obligation chat, contact Vera on 95 252 9670 for general enquiries. Simone on 619 903 815 can answer queries about airport runs in English or German. And despite the tough times, money is still needed to cope with the continuous flow of abandoned dogs and cats requiring help from the Costa Animal Society. How drinking filtered water might be the best decision of your life Water is perhaps the most essential, and the most overlooked, component of our diet. Water constitutes about 70% of our body-weight and is essential for all bodily functions. Clean water – free from any chemical, metals or microbes – is therefore essential for good health. However, most households do not question the quality of the tap water they drink and assume it to be safe simply because it appears clear to the eyes. Adverse health issues – from fatigue and deformities to hormonal imbalances and cancer – get prolonged for years as families do not
A homemade syrup for how to get mucus out of lungs For getting the mucus out of lungs, drink plenty of water. This will help to loosen the phlegm and help remove mucus. And if you smoke, try to kick the habit as smoking can cause serious lung problems, it also causes the lungs to produce excessive chest mucus, which will worsen the condition. There are also natural cures you can use, one of the effective ones here is a simple syrup you can make at home to get rid of the mucus easily: Homemade syrup: 1 cup of pure maple syrup 250 ml filtered water 1 lemon (sliced) 1 tablespoon flaxseed 1 tablespoon sage 1 tablespoon marshmallow root Direction: Mix the maple syrup in the water in a saucepan. Heat the mixture for 10-15 minutes on a medium heat. Add all the other ingredients and keep heating for 15 more minutes on a lower heat. Put the mixture in the fridge. Take this syrup, 1 tablespoon 3 times everyday. The symptoms should be relieved inside a few days.
realise that the cause of the problem is the clearlooking tap-water they have been drinking. Households usually rely on three sources of water – tap water, bottled water and water filtered by homebased water filters. Tap water may appear clean to the eye but it can contain waterborne diseases and contaminants. The tap water passes through infrequently cleaned and maybe leaky pipes and could easily be contaminated along the way. Tap water is often treated with strong chemicals to kill off microbes which can affect your glands that produce hormones to regulate your body. Bottled water has also become very popular but the industry is poorly regulated and sometimes bottled water can simply be little more than tap water that has been bottled. Cheap plastic bottles are also used that raise the risk of health issues from the plastic itself. Filtered water is easily the most reliable solution for having clean water in your home. Water filters remove all contaminants including disease causing microbes, heavy metals and chemicals such as chlorine and fluorides. Filtration of water produces clean natural water exactly as it is required by the body. Usually people notice a marked positive change in their health as well as increased energy levels after switching to filtered water, as the body no longer has to struggle with the contaminants.
Household spices that annihilate cancer cells, prevent heart Cinnamon attacks & improve gut health Cayenne pepper The hot fruit of the cayenne plant (“capsicum annuum”) has been used as a superb culinary spice for centuries and may be the most valuable medicinal herb. It contain a chemical, capsaicin, which may neutralize certain cancer-causing substances (nitrosamines) and may help prevent cancers. Initial experiments in cancer cells and mice show that capsaicin causes prostate cancer cells to undergo a kind of suicide.
Ginger Traditionally used to calm the stomach, ginger is often used as a natural accompaniment to chemotherapy, which often causes nausea and vomiting. Ginger extracts both inhibited the growth and caused the death of prostate cancer cells in mice when fed to them daily, without causing any toxic reaction. 48 THE MARKET PLACE
It takes not more than a half teaspoon of cinnamon powder every day to keep cancer risk away. A natural food preservative, cinnamon is a source of iron and calcium. Useful in reducing tumour growth, it blocks the formation of new vessels in the human body. Turmeric is one of the most medicinal spices on the planet. Its main antioxidant compound, called curcumin, has been found to destroy almost every type of cancer cell that exists. Scientists found that curcumin actually targets cancer cells while leaving normal cells alone.

From space the planet is the territory not of humans but of the whale" After spending nearly 10 years developing and designing web applications for universities and research projects worldwide, I am finally going back to my original interests. The Whale Nation Project started as a 100% self-funded venture where I was going be be documenting as many cetacean strandings as possible. The aim was to produce Upside down A enough of a body of work for an exhibition where Humpback whale calf dives down after coming a combination of still and moving images will up to the surface to be shown. Although the genesis of the work was breath while it's mother based on a conceptual idea, the final output will awaits just a few metres below in the South have a strong educational-driven outlook. The production leg of the project officially started on Boxing Day 2011 when a huge 55 feet long Bull Sperm Whale stranded on a North Norfolk beach. Since then the idea has grown and I am also going to be working with underwater equipment to film and photograph live whales in their natural element.
A Humpback whale in the South Pacific Archipelago I of Vava'u in the Polynesian Kingdom of Tonga.
In the Summer of 2014 we spent some time in the South Pacific Archipelago of Vava'u in The Kingdom of Tonga or Friendly Islands as James Cook called them after visiting them extensively in his second voyage of discovery of the South Pacific. We were documenting the migration of the Humpback whales form the cold food-rich waters of the Antarctic Ocean to the warm sallow waters of Tonga.
am currently seeking any private or public funding to take this idea further, both geographically and conceptually. Further funding will be used to pay for traveling expenses as well as an assistant much needed while taking footage of whales. THE MARKET PLACE 51
Nerja
was once a sleepy fishing village but now the town has a population of over 21,000. The Balcón de Europa is a magnificent promenade that was made famous by King Alfonso XII , who’s statue now takes pride of place at the far end. Close by is the 17th century Church of El Salvador, and the beautiful gardens of Capistrano Playa. The town boasts an active Centro de Cultura, and a new attraction is The Fuente de Europa in Verano Azul Park, which is a very impressive monument, made from pieces of stone donated from EU member states. There are many beaches to be found either side and in front of the town, including Burriana with its numerous cafés and restaurants. Here too, you can take advantage of the water sports on offer, including water skiing, scuba diving and sailing. Just outside Nerja on the coast road towards Maro is a very impressive aquaduct which used to supply the local sugar factory, but is now used to carry water to local farms.

Torre del Mar
is just 30 minutes from Malaga, and is the beach resort of Velez Málaga. Its population of 21,000 grows between June and September to 150,000. The towns attractions have expanded over the last few years to cope with the demand, and now the four kilometres of beach have been enhanced by an impressive promenade, which stretches all the way to Caleta de Vélez, a port providing over 200 berths and offering sailing and water sports. Throughout the summer, there are many Chiringuitos on the beach, serving fresh barbequed fish and ice cold beers. In 2002, Paseo de Larios was pedestrianized, and is now a tranquil promenade, with plenty of pavement cafés and restaurants. At the seafront end of Larios is a line of bars and discos which continue throughout the night on Fridays and Saturdays. The history of Torre is uncertain, but it is thought that it might have been part of an ancient Greek settlement, known as Mainake, which was destroyed by the Carthaginians. Tombs of the Carthaginians were found at the mouth of the river Velez. More recently, it was a small fishing village until major development began in the 1970’s.

La Herradura
nestles between the Punta de la Mona to the east and the rock of Cerro Gordo to the west. The bay enjoys shelter from west winds creating mostly crystal-clear waters, and is a popular location for water sports & paragliding. There are numerous beach bars and restaurants serving specialities of the region, including tropical salads, fresh fish or paella. The Marina del Este near La Herradura is tucked betwen Punta de la Mona to the west and Cotobro to the east. It boasts a beautiful port, elegantly designed to incorporate select shops, art galleries, bars and restaurants. This small strip of coast also claims to be the best place to dive between Almeria and Gibraltar, and is home to one of the areas leading diving schools.

is a 15 minute drive from the N340 Autovia, leaving at the junction for Velez Malaga. Head inland along the A356; this direction also leads to numerous inland white villages. The first turning on our map is to Benamocarra, which is sign posted to the right after the last roundabout into Velez Malaga. This road will take you back over the main road and then also on to Iznate, and divides to take you to Almachar, El Borge and Cutar. The second turning off the A356 is on the right (after the Repsol garage) to Trapiche. Continue on the A356, and immediately you will see another junction on the left, sign posted to Benamargosa, Triana, Comares and Cutar. This road will also take you as far as Rio Gordo (for a scenic drive). There is a popular Spanish bar on the corner of this junction called El Cruz. Back on the A356, continue on and you will pass another junction on the right, to Canillas de Aceituno, and finally you will see Lake Vinuela in front of you. Turn right before the lake for Puente de Don Manuel, Alcaucin, Viñuela and Periana; carry straight on for Los Romanes, Rio Gordo and Colmenar.

encompass 39.74 sq km within which live just over 3,000 people year round. Frigiliana is a popular tourist destination, and because there are many holiday homes here, the population triples during the summer months. The history of Frigiliana dates from prehistoric times. The village has been inhabited by numerous civilisations from the Phoenicians and Romans to the Arabs, who had the greatest impact on the town’s development. During the Christian reconquest, Frigiliana was the site of numerous battles culminating in the famous battle of the Rock of Frigiliana in 1569 which ended in the complete expulsion of the Moorish people. One can learn the history of this struggle by walking through the streets of the historic section where there are a series of twelve ceramic plaques posted about which explain the entire story.
