Local News Local News Local News Action by Endesa after electrocution of Eagle.

The GENA Ecologists Action group have recently filed an official complaint to Seprona (the nature protection arm of the Guardia Civil) after an adult eagle was electrocuted by a pylon in the Velez Malaga area. The pylon, located in the Atalayas Bajas area, has now been fitted with special elements that stop birds from being zapped. Gena have expressed their satisfaction after the action was carried out but complained that it has taken three and a half years and lots of complaints of dead birds before any action was taken by Sevilla Endesa. Gena also insist there are many other pylons in the Axarquia area that fail to adhere to the European bird protection standards.

Large drugs finds in La Viñuela and Antequera

National Police officers in Vélez-Málaga have detained four Spanish men in their 30s after a large cultivation of marijuana was found in La Viñuela. In a separate operation, 22 people have been arrested in Antequera for allegedly growing marijuana to be sent to the Netherlands. In La Viñuela, investigators confiscated 1,399 plants which were being nurtured using power illegally fed from the national grid. They were discovered at an isolated property from which a strong smell of marijuana was coming, along with the sound of machinery operating, although there was no contract to supply electricity to the house.

at the BMN bank. The Local Police and Guardia Civil in Almunecar are investigating the attack; at the moment they have not revealed if the theives got away with any money from the machine. The explosion was so strong though that it caused a lot of damage to the building and even some to the upper floors occupied by residents - people living above the bank had quite a shock and scare.

Corps, Maritime Rescue, Policia Local and the Red Cross all rushed to the scene. The migrants are thought to have travelled from sub-Saharan Africa.

Madrid to Tangiers in an hour on Hyperloop inter-continental bullet-train

New smart camera in Andalucia can check ITV and if seatbelts are being worn A new smart CCTV camera is cracking down on dangerous driving in Torre del Mar. The device can detect whether passengers are wearing seatbelts and if the car has a valid ITV (Spanish MOT) or not. It has been installed above an information panel on a roundabout along Avenida Juan Carlos I, the main route into town from Velez-Malaga, and replaces the old general surveillance camera.

New Manchester air link to Granada Airport Easyjet is planning new operations at Granada airport as part of a bid to double its growth in Spain. The low-cost carrier announced last week that it will operate 10 new routes, increasing the number of seats in and out of the country by 11 per cent to 16.4 million next year. The Granada-Jaen Federico García Lorca airport will handle two new routes to Manchester and Milan. From Friday, July 21, 2017, there will be two weekly connections to Manchester flying on Fridays and Tuesdays, while three services per week to Milan will begin on Sunday, March 26, flying on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays.

Pregnant migrant rushed to hospital in Velez Malaga after boat lands in Costa Tropical A pregnant woman was among seven migrants sent to Velez-Malaga hospital after a boat carrying 50 people washed up on the Costa Tropical. Six others were also transferred to the Hospital Comarcal de Velez-Malaga, where two were treated for hypothermia and four for abrasive wounds. Emergency services were called by a resident when she saw the boat on the shore line. The Guardia Civil, the National Police

An ambitious and futuristic rail project which has reached the semi-final of a global competition could involve being able to travel by train from Madrid to Tangiers in the north of Morocco in under an hour. The first-ever transport plan linking continental Europe and Africa by land, according to organisers of the Hyperloop One Global Challenge, the high-speed bullet-train would travel at 1,200 kilometres per hour, crossing the Strait of Gibraltar through a Channel Tunnel type of structure, albeit a floating one. The competition has so far seen 2,600 entries by 35 teams from all over the planet, meaning the Hyperloop to Morocco has hugely impressed the judges so far to have reached the semi-finals. A Hyperloop is a type of 'capsule' train in which passengers are half-lying down, and which is capable to covering distances at the same speed as an aircraft.

Brits lead the way in tourism The Costa del Sol has posted another record tourism year, with a total of 12 million visitors, up 10.3% from last year, according to provincial tourism chiefs. Britons continue as the top foreign arrivals, with some 2.6 million visiting the Costa in 2016, up 16.6% from 2015. The figures, presented by Diputación de Málaga president Elías Bendodo, who is also president of the provincial tourism promotion office, mark the Costa’s third consecutive record year. In 2014 the province for the first time edged over the 10 million visitor mark, and in 2015 topped that with 10.6 million visitors.

colour obstacle rush malaga

World Cancer Day takes place on 4th February each year. The day was first organised by the International Union Against Cancer in 2005. If you, like me, know someone who has either survived or died from this terrible disease, then this is the perfect chance to raise awareness of the ways we can prevent cancer through the choices we make. To get involved with the World Cancer Campaign you can find out all you need to know at the World Cancer Day website.

Enjoy a luxury safari with the youngest members of the household! El Torcal in Antequera is organising a very special route designed for the whole family to enjoy. Children will be able to see orchids and ancient marine fossils, and hear the legends and hidden secrets of this natural resource. The tour takes place on foot over uneven and rocky terrain, an experience for adventurers and nature lovers. The guide accompanying the walk will make several stops along the way to enjoy the flora and fauna, and explain the history of El Torcal and the ancient legends of the area. And you can immortalize every moment of the walk while you discover plants and animals you’ve never seen before. Information at: www.torcaldeantequera.com

At the Martin Carpena Stadium in Malaga on the 19th February The Malaga Colour Obstacle Rush is a five kilometre fun run with 15 obstacles. Inflatable obstacles which will make you climb, crawl, jump and even slide. In some of them enough colour will be added to encourage you to complete the whole course. There will also be balls, slides, foam and everything else you can imagine. Get ready for a day full of action, music, entertainment and lots of colour. Anyone over the age of 12 can take part (bearing in mind that the inflatable obstacles are designed for adults). Royal British Legion, February 2017 In September 1914, at the very outset of the great war, a dreadful rumour arose. It was said that at the Battle of the Marne, east of Paris, soldiers on the front line had been discovered standing at their posts in all the dutiful military postures - but not alive. Various hypothesis were put forward to explain this but the one which seemed to hold the most water was that the 432,000 shells which had been fired in a five day period of the September engagement from a battery of mobile 75mm field guns had been responsible for invisible forces to pass through the air and destroy men’s brains. Later it was observed that many of the soldiers who came to the casualty clearing stations presented with no obvious injury but clearly damaged were suffering from a "new type of injury" and appeared to be "the result of the actual explosion itself and not merely of the missiles set in motion by it." "Shell shock" as it became known was first reported in the Lancet medical publication in 1915, only six months into the war. At first this condition was regarded as a physical injury due to concussion but in 1916 it became apparent that some soldiers suffering from "jelly shaking, headache, tinnitus, dizziness, poor concentration, confusion, loss of memory and disorders of sleep" had never been anywhere near exploding shells, and in those unenlightened days were diagnosed with "neurasthenia or weakness of the nerves" - in layman’s terms a nervous breakdown precipitated by the dreadful stress of war. No longer called shell shock, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder is now recognised as the result of experiencing or witnessing a traumatic or terrifying event. It is a lasting consequence of ordeals that cause intense fear, helplessness, or horror e.g. 16 THE MARKET PLACE

natural disaster, war or physical violence, the sudden death of a loved one or an accident. The symptoms usually manifest themselves within three months of the incident, but in some cases they do not begin until years later. Some people recover within six months, but others suffer much longer and in some cases the condition becomes chronic. It is to that end that I hope we can count once again on the generosity of you, the public. As a group we organise our regular lunches at La Herradura and Maro, on the 1st Friday of the month, and the 3rd Thursday of the month respectively. There is a Spring Fair on the 25th February at the Lower Salon at the Caves Restaurant - anyone wishing to take a table should contact Dave on Tel: 654 085 811 or Vera on Tel: 952 967 200. If last year’s Fair was anything to go by, it should be a fun morning with lots of goodies on sale. As always I stress that our events are open to anyone, the aim is to raise money but we hope that we do it in enjoyable ways. Your support is vital, and I hope to see many new faces as well as our regular members and friends there. We would also be very grateful for any donations for the Bric-a-Brac stall, and the cake and candy stall at the Fair. 2. Central shower? Although probably the first idea of distribution would be to place the shower or bath in a corner to one side, rules can easily be broken. Yes, a shower can be installed in the centre of the room and in this example it is better because of the bulkhead wall, so placing it in the centre gives you more space.

3.Glass walls to the outside If you are lucky enough to have a bathroom with an outside area connected to a patio or area of your property, perhaps it would be nice to open the bathroom to the outside. The windows do not have to be small. Of course, privacy must be guaranteed through exterior elements or with blinds.

4. A bathtub in the wardrobe! If you prefer the bath to be tucked out of the way and be more of a discreet space, a sliding door could be an option to maintain privacy. It just shows you what can be achieved with a small space too. 5. The bathtub in the bedroom Integrating your bathtub into your bedroom can look great and may also make great sense especially if your bathroom is rather small but you have a large bedroom. 6. A different sink Not all sinks have to be rectangular cabinets or minimalist shelves, you can think outside the box and recycle. In this example an old sewing table has been used as the bathroom cabinet on which to plumb the

4 sink. It achieves a unique and original design. 7. When a bathroom does not look like a bathroom There are no limits when you decide what your bathroom will feature, mixtures of elements from other rooms are also welcome. Eclectic bathrooms look great that combine chairs from a dining room or recycled furniture from other rooms in the house.

8. Plants can also fit in well With the explosion of organic trends many designers have used plants in different interiors with great success. The green trend has encouraged the use of plants in all rooms including the bathroom. These ladders can be used for storing towels as well as for standing various plants.

6

8 10 9. Pure asymmetry A bathroom does not have to be one colour and symmetrical. The tiles can be laid both ways and the bathroom could be similar to this one which is split into two halves. One side is tiled white and the other grey but with great style.

7

10. A Work of art If art is your thing, this too can work very well in the bathroom. The bathroom in the example is simple but very elegant, the artwork adds that element of classic opulence.

Car News

by Martin Ward

First Driving Impressions – Fiat 124 Spider, UK Press launch, North Wales.

Fiat certainly have a history of producing two-seater open top sports cars, the first being in 1899 - the three-and a half hp model. But some of the more memorable and notable are from the recent past - remember the X19? And from the mid 1990’s the Barchetta, that was only available as a Left-Hand Drive. But the nicest, and probably most famous was the glorious 124 Spider that was built from 1966 to 1980, a huge success for Fiat with over 197,000 produced and around 5,300 still left on the roads, garages and museums around the world.

S

o it seems appropriate that the 124 Spider name should be resurrected, but many Fiat traditionalists (if there are many still around who care) will be annoyed or frustrated that this new car is in fact based on a Mazda MX-5 and built, not in Italy, but in Hiroshima, Japan, with the engines made at the Termoli plant in Italy and then shipped to Japan. But does it matter? Does anyone care? It is after all the car you are buying and driving that matters, its quality and reliability are far more important than where it has been screwed together. The 124 only has the choice of one engine, which is Fiats own 1.4-litre MultiAir Turbo petrol engine which produces 140hp and goes from 0-62mph in a brisk 7.5 seconds, with a top speed of 134mph, where permitted. I don’t really want to start comparing 124 with MX-5, but it is worth noting for those who don’t know that the Mazda is powered by either a 1.5 or 2,0 petrol engine, and any other comparisons are not forthcoming. Make your own minds up about design and styling. We set off from a hotel just on the English / Welsh border, and within a few minutes the road signs changed from English only to Welsh and English and we were on our way to Snowdonia, with the roof down in early winter sunshine.

20 THE MARKET PLACE

The 1.4-litre engine was so sweet, with more than enough power. It was just a delight to drive. We took it on some twisty roads with spectacular scenery on both sides of the car and it behaved beautifully. It felt so solid and stuck to the road as if it were on rails. It felt so safe and secure. When we parked it at the coffee stop, or in my case, the tea stop, you got a good chance to have a really good look around it and see just how pretty it is, just how much Italian chic and style it has. You can see much resemblance to the original 124. The bonnet shape and contours are very similar, so too is the line that runs from front to rear - after all, this is in essence a Mazda MX-5 (sorry, said I wasn’t going to mention it again) but it is so similar to the 1966 version, you have to wonder whether the Mazda designers took a piece of history and incorporated it into the design. If they did, then congratulations, as it does work well. From every angle, the Spider looks splendid and does make you smile. It’s so cheeky and cute, and the design works so well. From front to rear it is bold and muscular, but also elegant, and perfectly proportioned, so well done to the clever people in the Fiat Style Centre who have taken a classic in the MX-5, and Fiatised it. In the UK, three models are available: Classica (£19,545) Lusso (£22,295) and Lusso Plus (£23,295). My choice without a doubt would be the Lusso. It has so much standard spec including leather, heated seats, auto-air-con, 7’’ infotainment system including satellite navigation with 3D maps, 17-inch alloy wheels, rear parking camera, front fog lamps, keyless entry, chrome exhaust tips, leather trimmed steering wheel. This car does look good value and has everything you need. The 1.4-litre engine is coupled to a very smooth 6-speed manual gearbox, but we believe an automatic gearbox will be available during 2017. The roof is easy to operate and whilst it is not electric, you can manually put it up or down in just a few seconds, even while sitting in your seat. This helps to reduce weight and complexity. The interior is very Italian, and does have a nice touch, look and feel to it, including having soft touch plastic on the dash. The controls are easy to operate and are very intuitive. The down side to the cabin is the fact there is no glove box in front of the passenger - or if there is one, we couldn’t find it. There is a small amount of stowage space on the rear panel, in between the driver and passenger, You could use a lot of words to sum up the Fiat 124 Spider, but if I had to pick just one, then it would be FUN.

Indeed, for much of human history, the story of architecture and the story of faith were synonymous. This lecture explains the architecture of each of the major faith traditions, revealing how it is shaped by their rituals and beliefs. It briefly covers the sacred architecture of such early societies as Mesopotamia, Egypt and the Americas before focusing on the living faiths: the great continuities embodied in the sacred architecture of Buddhism and Hinduism, and the revolutionary changes brought about in monotheistic Judaism, Christianity and Islam. It thus brings fresh insights into some of the most remarkable buildings on the planet. The aim is to leave the audience understanding why and how (for example) a mosque is different from a synagogue or a church (and how they interrelate), as well as having a ‘big picture’ overview of what is happening where and when in the sacred buildings of planet earth. It should go without saying that the illustrations cover a sequence of the greatest buildings on the planet.

Tuesday February 21st 2017 at 6pm A fairy-tale of Barcelona Barcelona, Gaudi and sustainability A fully illustrated lecture in English by Rafael Anderson Sponsored by Sanysol At the Casa Cultura, Calle Granada, Nerja Visitors E10 Other NADFAS Society Members E5 Tickets only available on the night from 5pm We live at an extraordinary moment in time between the end of one century and the beginning of another. The shape of the twenty first century is yet to be shaped, how will it look? Could we be heading towards fairytale or nightmare, what choices are there for us make? There are certain places that point towards the future and Barcelona is one of them, it has always been a city of dreams manifest. We will be exploring the architecture and culture of Barcelona, its past its present and its future, looking at what makes this city so unique and inspiring.

About Jon Cannon

The following text has been taken from Jon’s blog page. “I have a vocation, and it’s to do with places; with communicating, enthusing, analyzing – in short, extollagising – about the nature of ‘old places’, and what makes them tick. I get especially excited about the sacredness of place, and the human place-making that results from it: a po-faced way of saying I love religious architecture in particular. English medieval churches are my academic specialism. In any case, this a calling without a career structure. Writing lies at the heart of it, but like many writers I do other things which help earn a living and which arise from the expertise I’ve gathered on the way. But these, for me, are not add-ons: lecturing, teaching and tour-leading, copywriting and editing for heritage organizations, academic research: all are essential elements in what is a seamless and overlapping range of concerns. You can find out more about each, or contact me direct, via this website. You might, indeed, come across my books, such as Cathedral: the great English cathedrals and the world that made them, published by Constable in 2007 and now out out in paperback; or The Secret Language of Sacred Spaces, was published in late 2013; the Shire book of Medieval Church Architecture came out in July 2014; I am currently writing a major work on the British landscape, slated for publication in 2016. You might also have come across my BBCTV documentary, How to Build a Cathedral, which was widely praised. Among other things, I teach regularly at the University of Bristol (mainly in the History of Art department), lead tours for Martin Randall Travel and others; am a Lay Canon (keeper of the fabric) at Bristol cathedral, and am a Member of Council for the British Archaeological Association. I am also an accredited NADFAS lecturer. My piece of journalism about North Korea (east Asia plays a big part in my life: my wife is the Chinese author Liu Hong) for the London Review of Books some years ago was shortlisted for the David Watt Memorial Prize.” 22 THE MARKET PLACE

About Rafael Anderson Rafael Anderson spent his earlier architectural career working in London, Scandinavia, India and Hong Kong. 14 years ago he came to Southern Spain where he has practiced as an architect and lectured widely on Spanish history and culture.

Why your Spanish may be stagnating... and what to do about it! by Olly Richards www.iwillteachyoualanguage.com or find me on facebook and twitter as well at "I will teach you a language"

Do you remember your first few weeks learning Spanish? It was lots of fun, right? You’d learn some new words, a few useful expressions, and you’d be able to use them in simple conversations right away! It was an amazing feeling... “At this rate, I’ll speak fluent Spanish in no time!” Except it didn’t quite work out like that. Somewhere along the line, your progress slowed... Learning Spanish stopped being fun, and feelings of frustration started to creep in. You think: “Maybe I’m just not cut out to learn Spanish!” Well, if you can relate to any of this, there’s something important I want you to know: It’s completely normal! Here’s why... You’re stuck at the “Intermediate Plateau” After learning eight languages myself, and teaching many thousands of people the secrets to foreign language acquisition... I’ve noticed a phenomenon that reliably occurs to everyone after learning a language for some time. It’s called the “Intermediate Plateau” and you’re stuck there right now. The main danger of finding yourself in this plateau, is that you become frustrated and begin to have feelings such as... n I’m frustrated by my lack of expression in Spanish. n I’m losing my motivation to keep learning. n I’ve started to have pipe dreams of learning other languages instead. n I have begun to doubt whether I’m capable of ever speaking Spanish fluently. And if these feelings linger for long enough, you can lose your motivation to study, and even give up. But wait! There’s hope...

The Plateau is an illusion! In reality, the intermediate plateau is mostly an illusion. Why? Well, when you learn Spanish as a beginner, virtually everything you learn in your textbook is immediately useful: n Verbs like venir, comer, estar, pensar 24 THE MARKET PLACE

n Nouns like comida, mesa, vida n Adjectives like bueno, caliente, interesante You can use them all in conversation right away, which gives you that wonderful feeling of satisfaction I mentioned earlier. Now, fast-forward to the intermediate level, where you’ve already learned the basics, can conjugate your verbs, and can hold a conversation in Spanish. From this point on, every new Spanish word or grammar point you learn is less and less useful to daily conversation: n Verbs like porfiar (to insist) or aclarar (to clarify) n Nouns like aliento (breath) or ramo (branch) n Adjectives like asado (roasted) or cuadrado (square) All very interesting words, but not likely to come up in your next conversation.

beginners because the amount of new information is limited and controlled. For example: n yo soy inglés n tú eres americano n él es español This kind of exercise is a typical way of practising new information you’ve just learned in class. However, in order to break through the intermediate plateau, you need to leave the safety and security of your textbook. You need to expose yourself to real Spanish - the entirety of the Spanish language, in all its glory.

Becoming fluent in Spanish with the “Whole Language” Instead of learning individual “nuggets” of Spanish in your textbook, and practising those, you now have to study in an entirely different way, using what’s known as the “whole language". Studying with the “whole language” means spending time with real Spanish, as it is found out in the real world - real material, that hasn’t been filtered or contrived for learners:

And this is why it’s an illusion... You’re still learning... it just doesn’t feel like it. Now you know the plateau is an illusion, you should feel encouraged. Your mind is not “broken” after all! So, n Books with that said, how do you break through n Radio the intermediate plateau, and take your rightful place as a fluent Spanish n Conversation speaker? Let me show you how... n Movies, etc

Learning Spanish at Intermediate Level

Using real Spanish as the basis for your study is a big task, but also an exciting When you were a beginner, your Spanish one! It’s this material that becomes the study probably looked a bit like this: object of your study - not your textbook. You need to spend time with real n Learn something new in your language, notice how it is used, and then textbook study that. n Practise using it in conversation You learn a new word, because you need It’s a classic behaviourist approach to it to understand a book you’re reading. language learning, and it works for continued on page 26

n a podcast with accompanying transcript n a book with accompanying audiobook n a textbook with recordings of dialogues n a radio play or movie with the original script

You learn a particular expression, because it comes up in the podcast you’re listening to. You finally understand a grammar point you’ve been struggling with for years, because it makes perfect sense in the context of a conversation you’re having with someone. Notice how different this is from textbook study: n Beginners: Study a “grammar nugget” as it’s presented in your textbook, and try to use that in real life n Intermediate: Spend time with real Spanish, and study how that is used With textbooks, you put an artificial cap on what you can learn. When you’re spending all your time with real Spanish, you encounter far more words and phrases that you otherwise would, and you unlock the possibility of unlimited learning. Everything you listen to or read becomes a potential source of learning. Even if you’re not studying something directly, the mere fact you’re exposed to it means you can begin to learn passively. But how exactly do you study real Spanish effectively? Won’t you get overwhelmed? Let’s talk about how to do it.

Spanish “Whole Language” Study Tips You’re going to need to spend a lot of time with Spanish. It can’t be a “twice a week” affair. So there are are two parts to this: n Discover the best way to learn Spanish on your own, so you take make the most of your study time

The important thing is that you can listen and read at the same time, and that the material is of interest to you, so it’s motivating. By having the text available as you listen, it allows you to pause the recording, go back and analyse what you hear, which strengthens your listening skills. By being able to listen as you read, it places the words more firmly in your head, and increases the likelihood you will remember them later. And by spending so much quality, in-depth time with Spanish, you will find your ability to speak also increases at the same time, as if by magic. My recommendation: n Choose audio tracks that are 3-5 minutes long, ideally on topics of interest to you n The audio should be accompanied by a word-for-word transcript n You should be able to understand at least 90% of the text already, otherwise it is too hard This is the study sequence I use: Begin with the audio alone (no transcript), and listen many times over, trying to understand as much as you can; When you reach the limit of what you can understand, add the transcript. Continue to listen over and over, reading along with the transcript; As you listen, mark unknown words, so you can find them later; Look up the unknown words in a dictionary. You should now be able to understand most of the text, but don’t worry if there are some bits you’re unsure about. Hide the text, and go back to listening to the audio alone, over and over.

Part 2: A Spanish Lifestyle If you’re going to become fluent in Spanish, you need to make the language a living, breathing part of your life. As long as Spanish only exists on the page, you will never learn to use it naturally, the way you really want. The process described above is extremely effective, but if you want everything you learn to translate into spoken fluency, you need to put it into practice.

Here are some brief ideas for making this happen: n Spend more of your lesson time chatting freely about things that interest you - rather than a program of textbook or grammar-based lessons n Go out and spend time with Spanish speakers (in language exchanges or cultural events) - rather than studying at home n Take general-interest classes (salsa, life drawing, judo) conducted in Spanish, and make friends in the process - without waiting “till you’re ready” n Read Spanish books, magazines, or blogs, in order to enjoy them - rather than as an object of study n Read the news in Spanish - rather than your usual English-language channel

Conclusion Breaking through the intermediate plateau in Spanish takes time and dedication, but by following the steps in this article, you do something extremely important... make it fun, and relevant to you! That’s the best way to avoid stagnation, and motivate yourself to keep at it long enough to be successful. I’ve shown you how you can orientate your study around things (materials and activities) that interest you, and study the “whole language” in order to unlock the full potential of your learning. The best way to learn Spanish is not to wait until the day you’re fluent, and then begin to use it. The secret to becoming fluent in Spanish is to embrace it as a lifestyle, and to enjoy it every day. That’s how I did it, and I hope you will too!

Repeat this process with the same This article originally appeared in the material over a few days. As your brain Huffington Post but the author Olly n Make Spanish part of your lifestyle, so naturally forgets things from one day Richards has kindly allowed to the next, it’s by repeatedly coming you have opportunities to learn passively Marketplace Magazine to use it. back to the same material that you Part 1: Studying On Your Own learn and absorb it. Matters of business and money may start to flex their muscle and begin to grow and expand .You will do well in matters that require good concentration, especially esoteric and philosophical studies. Sexual encounters are tempting and creativity will be high. This is a month of mixed blessings. A series of events will affect your self-image and your major relationships, sparking off events and touching deep personal issues for you in terms of self and partnership. There is money to be made if you know when to act and how to manage it. There is love to be found or renewed if you know how to open yourself up to it. You will find success through personal effort, along with honours and dignities. You can achieve high ambitions, especially those connected with government, institutions and the law. Ride your own luck and enthusiasm with opportunities that present themselves for growth, expansion and diversity. You may get drawn into matters of direct spiritual experience, allowing you to touch the world of spirit and the invisible.

Cancer ( 21 June – 22 July )

Life is keeping a firm grip on where you go and what you do. This month may find you counting the costs of the formidable efforts you have had to make to keep going. Attunement to the pattern will be an integral part of getting the most from this month, for there are clear cycles of growth, decline and re-growth in different areas of your life.

Leo ( 23 July – 22 August )

You would be fostering connections, affirming efforts and bringing a note of the hard won achievement that you can celebrate. It will be important for you to redefine yourself, to see yourself in different ways, almost as a different person. You can wilt beneath the challenge or flourish, toughened by the experience. It’s up to you. Sexuality is active, experimental and somewhat detached, bringing love affairs and adventures.

Virgo ( 23 August – 22 September )

This is a period where you can grow and expand on a very personal level through opportunities for advancement through study or promotion. Eat up what’s on the plate. It will lead to more and better things for you. Romance in the work environment and fun with a dashing foreigner, or creative type is indicated. Travel will bring out the beast in you. 28 THE MARKET PLACE

This could be a good time to avoid tying up any money with other people’s business or investments, as such ties may lead to losses, uncertainties and even outright deception. There will be endings, departures and even betrayals. You may find some new liaison. It will certainly be an intense one. For those already in relationships, the pressure around you or from within to maintain the relationship will get increased. Your energy levels run high and your pioneering instincts are strong. This is a fabulous period for charm and attractiveness. Stress could build up in the last week or just plain old-fashioned exhaustion could set in. Take care of yourself as you try to walk the line between self-nurture and meeting the demands of your life. Give yourself a little breathing space and time for review. The month ahead is strong for networking, friendships, and new approaches in your career.. The first ten days can find you streamlining your routines, heavily involved in research and highly motivated in work and health matters. The second half is more auspicious for clearing up misunderstandings with authority figures. After 22nd there can be surprising happenings with friends or acquaintances and possibly a love relationship.

Capricorn ( 22 December – 19 January ) You are especially companionable and open to new experiences, although perhaps starry-eyed at times. There can be a surprising or sudden show of support, emotional or financial. Romantic illusions or self-deceptions should be watched for. Some of you could connect intimately with someone seemingly out of the blue, or there can be an unanticipated financial matter to manage. The last week can involve some social drama in your life.

Aquarius ( 20 January – 18 February )

You are bolder than usual and motivated to pursue what you want and to prove your value. It’s about positive new beginnings, turning over a new leaf, and expressing yourself without apology. There may be job offers and opportunities, and some of you could be receiving significant gifts or bonuses. If you have been working along the right track, you can see a significant pay-off for previous efforts.

Pisces ( 19 February – 20 March )

This period heightens your optimism and generosity, and has the potential for being a relaxed, fortunate and hopeful time in your life. You are greeting life with a fresh, can-do attitude. Events occur that help you to overcome problems that previously seemed challenging or even insurmountable. Furthering your personal ambitions and interests comes more easily during this cycle. A compelling, intense relationship may come and go very quickly.

Understanding the

Glycemic Index The term “glycemic index” may sound complicated, but it’s simply a measure of the rise in blood sugar after eating a food that contains carbohydrates. Over the years, the glycemic index has had its share of fans and foes and is still used by people trying to control their blood sugar or body weight.

P

hysicians David Jenkins and Thomas Wolever invented the glycemic index in 1981 by first plotting curves to show how a specific amount of glucose raised study participants’ blood sugar over two hours. Then they had participants consume the same amount of carbohydrate via foods and plotted the resulting rise in blood sugar. A food’s glycemic index is the percent by which it raises blood sugar compared to glucose and is expressed on a scale of 0 to 100.

meal may be insignificant. Jenkins and Wolever addressed these concerns in a 1986 study showing how a meal’s glycemic index may be calculated. Research participants experienced expected rises in blood sugar based on calculated glycemic indices of the meals they ate.

More recently, studies have addressed glycemic index in a variety of populations with differing results. In 2002, Jenkins authored a review paper promoting a low-glycemic index diet for people with diabetes and During the next several for reducing cardiovascular disease risk. For individuals years, Jenkins and Wolever published additional studies with diabetes, the American with participants from various Diabetes Association says the glycemic index may populations, including healthy adults and people be used to help fine-tune blood sugar, but the amount with hyperlipidemia and diabetes. Glycemic index of carbohydrate a food seemed to be a useful tool contains is more important for people with diabetes than its glycemic index. The Academy of Nutrition and to control blood sugar, as well as a way to lower Dietetics’ Nutrition Care cholesterol and triglycerides Manual includes information on glycemic index as an in people with high blood alternative to the ketogenic lipids. Additionally, Wolever found when healthy adults diet for people with epilepsy. consumed low-glycemic Emerging evidence suggests index meals for dinner, a low-glycemic diet may help they tended to experience improve insulin sensitivity lower glycemic responses to in children with obesity and carbohydrates at breakfast elevated insulin. The 2013 the next day than they did International Carbohydrate when they had high-glycemic Quality Consortium, index meals at dinner. convened by the Glycemic Index Foundation, asserts A main criticism of the glycemic index is that people glycemic index is a valid usually consume a variety of strategy for controlling blood sugar in healthy adults and foods in a single meal. However, the Natural with different glycemic indices, the glycemic index of Medicines Database says there is insufficient evidence an individual food in a total

to rate claims for the glycemic index. Additionally, the 20152020 Dietary Guidelines for Americans do not mention glycemic index, leading one to reason it is not of concern for the average, healthy person. Using the glycemic index as a weight-loss strategy lacks strong evidence. When used in addition to caloric restriction, a low-glycemic index diet can produce weight loss. However, one of the diet’s modern selling points is users don’t have to count calories and can still lose weight, which is a claim yet to be supported. A 2015 study of 91 adults with obesity found a low-glycemic index diet had no effect on weight loss, fat mass, lean mass nor metabolic adaptation during a 17-week weight-loss period compared to an isocaloric high-glycemic index diet. But a small 2013 study found when participants consumed high-glycemic index meals, they experienced increased hunger and cravings. Scepticism about using the glycemic index as a dietary tool exists for several reasons. The glycemic index of a food tells nothing about its nutritional qualities. For instance, watermelon has a higher glycemic index than ice cream, but most would say watermelon is a more nutritious option and may be eaten by people with diabetes, without need for concern, in accordance with their carbohydrate patterns. Academy spokesperson Jim White, RDN, ACSMEP- C,

says he sees clients who are afraid to eat nutritious highglycemic index foods such as potatoes, melon or pineapple, but these foods should not be avoided. When it comes to healthy eating, following the key recommendations of the Dietary Guidelines are more realistic and applicable strategies for most people. Academy spokesperson Marina Chaparro, MPH, RDN, LD, CDE, finds the glycemic index to be too variable and impractical to recommend to her clients with diabetes. Both Chaparro and White suggest clients use glycemic load, rather than glycemic index, to take portion size into account. “I teach my clients to focus on wholesome food, learn how to count carbs and focus on the right portion size,” Chaparro says. Although the glycemic index is not perfect, it can be a useful tool in addition to evidence-based strategies for controlling blood sugar in people with or at risk for diabetes, as long as they are not unnecessarily restricting foods. Prediabetes and diabetes are not caused by eating high-glycemic foods; they are complex diseases with a variety of risk factors, including other dietary variables, activity level, age, race, sex and family history. A wellness plan including assessment of all these factors helps health care professionals develop individualized strategies for patients and clients.

Fellowship of The King Film & Tapas Evening An incredible but true story is retold in the film “The Perfect Wave”, which is next up in this season’s popular Film & Tapa evenings at FTK in Nerja; it will be screened at 7.30pm on Friday 3rd February at FTK’s premises in Pasaje San Miguel (around the corner from the main Mercadona.) Starring Scott Eastwood (Clint Eastwood’s son) and Cheryl Ladd (who played Kris Munroe in the TV show ‘Charlie’s Angels’).This suspenseful yet family-friendly film is based on the fantastic experiences of Ian McCormack. At the age of 24 Ian McCormack set out on an adventure with his best friend to find the perfect wave. It took them to Australia, Southeast Asia, and even Africa as they carried their surfboards under their arms in their youthful search. Little did he know he was one sting away from death. On the eve of returning home to attend his brother’s engagement party Ian went for a midnight swim. It was then that the second most poisonous jellyfish in the ocean – the Box Jellyfish – stung him - five times. What happened next changed his life forever, as he used his

last few breaths in the back of an ambulance to pray, before he went beyond the ocean, into the mortuary and on into eternity. And back again. This barely credible blockbuster with its all-star cast, breathtaking cinematography, and an out-of-this-world true story has to be seen to be believed. Ian McCormack is alive and well and working in London. Highly recommended - do join us! More information on 952 969 058 or info@ftk-spain.net Leslie Thomas.

THE MARKET PLACE 41

Local animal charities TAIL (Torrox Animal International League) Well, it´s that time of year again – puppies left right and centre. Within forty-eight hours, a mother with six puppies only days old, and then just three puppies born about three and a half weeks previously, and all on a refuge bursting at the seams. I don´t know if it´s a symptom of Tail becoming even more well known as a charity that cares or of greater collections of irresponsibly dumpted new borns, however it doesn´t take a moment to comprehend that if there is no space for further dogs that to take in puppies which require hand rearing with special food three/ four times a day puts an incredible strain on the volunteers who have to cope. It will take time but our castration programme which has been going great guns since December will slowly diminish this problem. As you can easily see now is a great time to offer your services as a foster carer – even for only a few weeks is an enormous help. All these and others that will follow will grow and require all their inoculations, neutering and a loving home to be found for them. And so, dear readers, the merry go round starts to go around again.

C.A.S. (Costa Animal Society) Return of the caterpillars Dog owners are being given their annual warning about the appearance of caterpillars which can cause serious problems for their pets. The nests of the Pine Processionary moth began appearing, earlier than usual, by the middle of last month, high up in the branches of pine trees. These look like balls of cotton wool or candy floss but each is actually full of up to 200 maturing caterpillars.

A pine processionary nest and a procession (Photos: John Peatey)

Soon, the creatures will be ready for the next stage of their development and will fall to the ground where they will begin their annual march into underground burrows. Here they will remain dormant until summer when they emerge as harmless moths. The caterpillars get their name because they undertake this march in single file lines and follow one another, much like a religious procession. The danger for pets, as well as humans, is because, at this stage of their lifecycle, they possess an unusual defence mechanism. Processional Caterpillars are covered in fine white hairs which can cause at least skin irritation and at worst anaphylactic shock. The caterpillars can travel along the 42 THE MARKET PLACE

ground for long distances so the menace may be apparent far from the nearest pine tree. Unfortunately, the inherently curious nature of dogs and cats may lead them to investigate these unusual creatures. If a pet was to sniff, lick our bite these caterpillars, it would almost certainly suffer a severe allergic reaction which, in the worst scenario, can cause airway closure and death. Other, luckier pets have lost part of their tongues after licking a caterpillar. The symptoms of exposure to caterpillar hair are excessive drooling or frothing at the mouth, difficulty in breathing and/ or white spots in the mouth or tongue. If you think your pet is suffering from these symptoms, vets recommend that the animal’s mouth is flushed out with as much water as possible and that the animal is taken immediately for emergency treatment. Avoid contact with the animal’s saliva because the toxin can affect humans as well. The young, the elderly and those who suffer from toxic allergies should be kept well away. To minimise the problem, farmers cut down the nests and then burn them in a metal bucket to prevent as many of the hairs as possible being left to float off in the air. Treading on the caterpillars does not destroy these toxic hairs. And anyone thinking of taking a pre-emptive strike against these nests should bear in mind that they too are full of caterpillar hair, which can easily fall out when disturbed. Exposure by humans has been known to cause a severely itchy rash that can last up to three weeks, temporary blindness and/or respiratory problems. Take appropriate precautions or hire a professional. If that was not enough to worry about, the unusually warm weather is likely to bring an early return of other pests including fleas, ticks and mosquitoes. In order to protect our pets, owners need to remain vigilant with regular flea and tick treatments and remember to replace Scalibor collars if they have worn for six months or longer.

CAS cat corner There is more good news on the cat front. The Beatles brothers, the four ginger kittens of Kitty pictured last month, have now all found forever homes. Two of the brothers were adopted locally with the other two finding a home in Granada. Kitty, alas is still awaiting her forever home, albeit with a very caring fosterer. Jasmine

Briefly mentioned in December was the re-homing of a lovely three-pawed Siamese cat. This was a very interesting, instructive case. It’s worth a brief accounting. On November 24, CAS was contacted by a Swedish couple who had taken this cat into their home when they found it abandoned with its bed and some food in the stairwell of the flats in which they were staying. The cat, Jasmine, was clearly a house cat and fit right in on the sofa. Unfortunately, the couple were returning to Sweden in six days. Jasmine was missing her back left paw and a good five or six centimetres more and she had the queerest gait I’ve ever seen. When I first met her I couldn’t tell if she was coming towards me or in retreat. The back left leg made a huge circular motion like a gear engaged. Clearly though she made her way in and out and up and down without seeming to credit the inconvenience.

Despite our best efforts CAS was not able to find a fosterer for her in time, and so on the evening of the Swedes’ departure we took Jasmine to the safety of a trusted kennels. Only two days later contact was made with a very warmhearted and knowledgeable couple who had bred and shown Siamese cats in the past. After a visit to the vets it was determined that Jasmine had probably lost her paw in an accident of some sort, maybe a trap, but that it had healed remarkably well and she needed no further treatment for the injury, aside from dance lessons. Jasmine was taken home to her new family where she is having a wonderful time in the company of two humans and two other cats. We were thrilled and sent an e-mail account to the Swedish couple whose reply should inspire us all. To wit: “Hi F., Really great news, feels like an early Christmas present. It’s no surprise to us that she seems to get along well in her new family, because we had a very good experience during our short time. It was really Pia and I that kept her from becoming too settled in, we didn’t want to have her too attached to us or the apartment. Kind regards, and a big thank you…Ingvar and Pia.” Establishing a network of fosterers with the attitude of this lovely couple is the only way that animal rescue work can be financially viable. For a no obligation chat about re-homing or fostering an animal from CAS, please call the charity’s secretary Diana on 679 714 612.

Health, Body & Soul Love your life more with advice on how to lead a healthy lifestyle

You should not be cleaning your ears with a Cotton Bud It sounds gross, but admit it: there are few things as satisfying as cleaning your ear out with a cotton bud. You’ve had a shower, your hair is washed and boom! - it's time to clear your ear. So fresh, right?

Casual smokers listen up! Smoking just one cigarette a day leads to earlier death and an increased chance of lung cancer, emphysema and cardiovascular disease. According to a new study, one cigarette is making you 64 per cent more likely to suffer an earlier death than people who’ve never smoked in their life. Literally every cigarette you smoke is doing you harm. The study questions the notion that a few cigarettes make no difference to one’s overall health, scientists here conclude there is ‘no safe level of smoking.’

Wrong. New guidelines released by the American Academy of Otolaryngology (a fancy word for ear, nose and throat studies) suggest that cleaning your ears out with a cotton tip is actually only serving to further block your ear and cause impacted earwax. Essentially, you’re just pushing the wax further down your ear

canal, which can cause hearing loss, pain and a ringing in the ear. So yeah, you should probably stop that. But how will you get rid of it, then? Apparently, you don't actually need to. Ear wax is completely normal and actually helps us to keep our ears clean and free of infection by trapping any nasties before they get to the inner ear. If you’re worried about how much naturally occurring wax you have in your ears, or feel like it impairs your hearing, the best course of action is to seek out a

doctor, who will advise if you need some softening ear drops or your ears syringed (flushed out). You also should not be using anything else to clean out your ears, with other options like matches and pens also likely to disrupt the ear wax situation in your ear. (Admit it: you've done at least one of these before!) Ear candling (the process of burning a candle with the butt of it placed in your ear) is also not advisable as it may cause foreign wax from the candle to stay in your ear.

The more you drink the smarter you are ? This is one we’ll celebrate by popping open a bottle of bubbly. It turns out a study published in Social Science and Medicine Journal on British alcohol consumption has linked women’s education with higher alcohol consumption. Essentially smarter women are more likely to drink alcohol on most days. Those who have achieved a tertiary degree drink 86 percent more than those who never went to university. So essentially, the next time someone asks you why you’re sipping chardonnay at 11am on a Sunday, you can say it’s because you’re smart! The study also found that education can start to impact one’s alcohol consumption from as young as five.

For the British cohort studied (all born in 1970) those who achieved high test scores between the ages of five and 10 were more likely to drink heavily than those who performed poorly at a young age. Your partiality for margaritas has essentially been bred into you since you were young – nothing you can do about it now, right? The study does suggest that perhaps the effect isn’t always to do with intelligence, rather what being educated can afford you in social position and opportunities in life. Educated women have “a more intensive social life that encourages alcohol intake, a greater engagement into traditionally male spheres of

Opinions... We are all entitled to different views... four different compositions by students at I.E.S Sierra Almijara, Nerja

Homework - an opinion By Julia Carmona Moreno The benefits of homework have been debated by parents and children for a long time. Some people say that exercises outside school are good to learn and improve our knowledge whereas others say that homework causes stress to everyone. I think that homework will prepare students for exams, and it also helps us to practise, and I also think that children need time to relax and take their minds off work.

Young people are not interested in politics By Alba Claros Most young people are not interested in politics, they are more worried about their studies or even going out with friends to have fun than in voting for politicians who can, allegedly, do the best for them. Firstly, it is a fact that young people don’t vote most of the time, that happens because they really don’t know what politicians can do. And if they vote, they just vote for the same people as someone in their family close to him or her. Secondly, politics should be taught at school, because when you vote for a politician you are deciding what you want for your future and doing this without knowing what they say is a mess.

Finally, some parents and students think that after six or five hours of lessons at school, it’s unfair to expect students to arrive home and work for another three hours. I think that the best option is to do only 30 minutes´ homework a day, and if some students want to do more, of course they can! But don’t forget that they also have to study, and afternoons aren’t long To sum up, to vote for the right politician is very important enough. in our lives, because they are going to decide for us in many If you work hard at school and also at home, you will succeed, important issues. remember: practice makes perfect.

Pot/weed/grass…? Why not?

Feelings

By Carlos Garrido

By Nicolás Álvarez García, 2º Bachillerato A

This topic has been really controversial and many people have their own viewpoint about legalizing this drug. I do not have any problems to say that weed should be legal. Obviously, there must be restrictions about who is able to use it. At first, there would not be any objections for those who suffer from deep stress or terminal cancer. It is a good therapy both to prevent horrible secondary effects or suicides. Furthermore, adults will be able to consume a limited number of grams and buy it in specialized shops. Of course, smokers must do it in their own houses, so other people will not be annoyed by the smoke smell. In fact, there is a similar system working in the Netherlands that for me is brilliant.

Now, I am going to give my opinion about how people express their feelings. I think that people are scared about showing their own true feelings in public. The reason is that we live in a very frivolous world where most people just think about themselves. The positive aspect is that some people are worried about other people and they can make the world a better place to live in. We live in the 21st century but it seems that we are still living in the eighteenth century. When you are sad and you are a woman you can cry but if you are a man, you cannot do it because it would make you “look like a woman”. I think that everyone should express his or her feelings everywhere. If you are happy, smile; If you are sad, cry; If you are caring, hug someone; If you are in love, let her/him know!

It is true kids are more vulnerable to enter the drug world with this system. That is why it is really important to prevent present and future generations from the abuse of all types of drugs, including alcohol, tobacco, speed and a hundred more. We all must know what we consume, that is the reason why The most important thing that people have to know is that we need responsible citizens, because ignorance is one of the they are free! most terrible foes in our society. If we do not teach this, even now, we will have dependent people who are lost in their lives. To sort out this problem, why not make an effort? 50 THE MARKET PLACE

Nerja

was once a sleepy fishing village but now the town has a population of over 21,000. The Balcón de Europa is a magnificent promenade that was made famous by King Alfonso XII , who’s statue now takes pride of place at the far end. Close by is the 17th century Church of El Salvador, and the beautiful gardens of Capistrano Playa. The town boasts an active Centro de Cultura, and a new attraction is The Fuente de Europa in Verano Azul Park, which is a very impressive monument, made from pieces of stone donated from EU member states. There are many beaches to be found either side and in front of the town, including Burriana with its numerous cafés and restaurants. Here too, you can take advantage of the water sports on offer, including water skiing, scuba diving and sailing. Just outside Nerja on the coast road towards Maro is a very impressive aquaduct which used to supply the local sugar factory, but is now used to carry water to local farms.

Torre del Mar

is just 30 minutes from Malaga, and is the beach resort of Velez Málaga. Its population of 21,000 grows between June and September to 150,000. The towns attractions have expanded over the last few years to cope with the demand, and now the four kilometres of beach have been enhanced by an impressive promenade, which stretches all the way to Caleta de Vélez, a port providing over 200 berths and offering sailing and water sports. Throughout the summer, there are many Chiringuitos on the beach, serving fresh barbequed fish and ice cold beers. In 2002, Paseo de Larios was pedestrianized, and is now a tranquil promenade, with plenty of pavement cafés and restaurants. At the seafront end of Larios is a line of bars and discos which continue throughout the night on Fridays and Saturdays. The history of Torre is uncertain, but it is thought that it might have been part of an ancient Greek settlement, known as Mainake, which was destroyed by the Carthaginians. Tombs of the Carthaginians were found at the mouth of the river Velez. More recently, it was a small fishing village until major development began in the 1970’s.

La Herradura

nestles between the Punta de la Mona to the east and the rock of Cerro Gordo to the west. The bay enjoys shelter from west winds creating mostly crystal-clear waters, and is a popular location for water sports & paragliding. There are numerous beach bars and restaurants serving specialities of the region, including tropical salads, fresh fish or paella. The Marina del Este near La Herradura is tucked betwen Punta de la Mona to the west and Cotobro to the east. It boasts a beautiful port, elegantly designed to incorporate select shops, art galleries, bars and restaurants. This small strip of coast also claims to be the best place to dive between Almeria and Gibraltar, and is home to one of the areas leading diving schools.

Lake Viñuela

is a 15 minute drive from the N340 Autovia, leaving at the junction for Velez Malaga. Head inland along the A356; this direction also leads to numerous inland white villages. The first turning on our map is to Benamocarra, which is sign posted to the right after the last roundabout into Velez Malaga. This road will take you back over the main road and then also on to Iznate, and divides to take you to Almachar, El Borge and Cutar. The second turning off the A356 is on the right (after the Repsol garage) to Trapiche. Continue on the A356, and immediately you will see another junction on the left, sign posted to Benamargosa, Triana, Comares and Cutar. This road will also take you as far as Rio Gordo (for a scenic drive). There is a popular Spanish bar on the corner of this junction called El Cruz. Back on the A356, continue on and you will pass another junction on the right, to Canillas de Aceituno, and finally you will see Lake Vinuela in front of you. Turn right before the lake for Puente de Don Manuel, Alcaucin, Viñuela and Periana; carry straight on for Los Romanes, Rio Gordo and Colmenar.

Frigiliana

encompass 39.74 sq km within which live just over 3,000 people year round. Frigiliana is a popular tourist destination, and because there are many holiday homes here, the population triples during the summer months. The history of Frigiliana dates from prehistoric times. The village has been inhabited by numerous civilisations from the Phoenicians and Romans to the Arabs, who had the greatest impact on the town’s development. During the Christian reconquest, Frigiliana was the site of numerous battles culminating in the famous battle of the Rock of Frigiliana in 1569 which ended in the complete expulsion of the Moorish people. One can learn the history of this struggle by walking through the streets of the historic section where there are a series of twelve ceramic plaques posted about which explain the entire story.

Competa

Clubs & Organizations

has grown considerably over the past few years, having over 35 different nationalities all living in harmony together. Its charming whitewashed streets come together in a central plaza where you will find the Church of La Asunción with its unique golden dome that stands out above the village. There are many fine restaurants, cafés, and tapas bars; and gift shops that sell the local ceramics. Competa is famous for its sweet muscatel wine, which is available in most bars, but highly potent, so drink with care!
