The Botanical Treasures of Malaga

Plants that have been brought from the furthest corners of the planet, water trickling in the little fountains and pools that combine with the beautiful birdsong. Surprisingly, you can visit Malaga, feel relaxed and appreciate nature without getting involved in the hustle and bustle of the city. On your next visit to Malaga it is worth a trip to these famous parks of the city. Parque de Malaga Right in the centre of the city, caressed by the sea breeze, the Parque de Malaga is a Mediterranean garden that came into being at the end of the 19th century on land reclaimed from the sea. Scarcely three hectares in size it boasts an enormous variey of tropical and subtropical plants, over 360 species which make it one of the most important public gardens in Spain and a great example of biodiversity. Look out for the ancient ceiba trees, oaks and ilexes that date from 1900 when this green space was created. To stroll along the paths, sit and have a drink at one of the kiosks (there is a fantastic juice bar I would recommend right near the childrens' park) in the shade of the trees, or relax on a bench near the fountains and pools. This should be a compulsory part of any trip to this increasingly popular city.

La Concepcion Botanical Gardens

8 THE MARKET PLACE

This green paradise on the outskirts of the city has 25,000 species of trees, native, tropical and subtropical which have taken root on the 23 hectares that make up this magical place. The perfect place for a stroll or to sit and relax and enjoy the peacefulness and tranquility so close to the city. La Concepcion Historical Botanical Garden was created in 1850 by the Marquesses of Loring and it is where they built their own family summer

mansion, an estate manager's house and Loringian Museum. The most iconic corner of the gardens is the historic belvedere with the long pool laid out before it. From just beyond here you can take in the incredible views of the Malaga Cathedral, the castle, the Gibralfaro hill against the extended view of the coast of Malaga and the deep blue of the sea. The garden can be visited between Tuesday and Sunday and guided tours are available during the day and night. For more information log on to: www.laconcepcion.malaga.eu

La Consula Gardens The Consula Cooking School is set in exotic gardens amongst plants from all over the world. There is bamboo, yucca, araucarias, jacarandas, in total a hundred botanical species which have been planted at the property since the beginning of the 19th century. This makes it one of the most surprising green areas of the city. La Consula gardens are located in Churriana where the original 18th century farmland became a country home with a classical French garden at the end of the 19th century. La Consula is now home to a specialised and recognised vocational training centre and the 12.5 hectares of gardens, fountains and belvederes are open to the public. More info at: www.malaga.es

Local News Local News Local News Local News Spain summoned to Brussels over air pollution 9 European state members, including Spain and the UK, have been summoned to Brussels over the level of air pollution in the countries. During the summit the countries will have to show that they are serious about reducing air pollution and outline what they are doing to combat the problem. Along with Spain and the UK there will be representatives from France, Germany, Italy, Hungary, Romania, Czech Republic and Slovakia as these countries also show levels of air pollution greater than the stipulated safe level. The EU say that they need to protect European citizens and clarify whether any improvements in air quality have been made before applying legal consequences to offenders. The EU has been warning of this for a long time and has now offered them advice and assistance in the first instance. According to information around 400,000 people die every year in the EU as a direct result of air pollution.

50 school children plant 200 trees in the pine forest of La Fortaleza de Velez Malaga

The Environment Councillor of the Council of Velez Malaga, Marcelino Mendez Trelles, explained that the day of environmental education took place where kids planted native trees such as almond, kermes oak, holm oak, rosemary and olivilla among others. The activity has been promoted by the Environment Department of Velez along with collaboration from the Jose Luis Villar Palasi School and with Aula del Mar and the Diputacion de Malaga. On previous visits to the area students had made a visit to the nursery where experts gave talks on climate change and the importance of reforestation of the area of the forteleza. The students involved were fifth and sixth grade from primary school. The saplings were between 1 and 2 years old and packaged in forest trays which helped facilitate the subsequent transplantation. The emphasis to the students was on the great importance of revegetation with the native species, which present 10 THE MARKET PLACE

advantages over non native species due to their better acclimatization to the area which makes them more resistant to water shortage.

Aguas Narixa in Nerja takes over locals' water supply A different kind of controversy other than the unfinished water treatment plant is now alive in Nerja. The offical town water supplier Aguas de Narixa has been installing its own machinery to take over the supply to residents in the Fuente del Baden area. At the present time 4,000 homeowners and residents in Fuente del Baden get water from a local water cooperative. However, Nerja Council say that locals should only be using this for agricultural watering and not to supply their houses for other uses. The Fuente del Baden community have started legal action against Aguas de Narixa last summer, accusing the latter of threats and coercion in trying to get customers to switch.

Nerja Cultural Department announce a free course to learn to dance Fandangos

The Department of Culture of Nerja directed by Anabel Iranzo has called a free workshop to learn to dance the Fandango, a native dance of Nerja. The course, sponsored by the Provincial Council of Malaga, is an initiative of the Association Malagueña Entremares for the recovery of folklore in our province. The course will begin on 6th February, and will be held every Tuesday from 17:00 to 19:00 hours at the Municipal School of Music and Dance in Nerja, and is open to everyone. The Teachers will be Encarnación López González Sánchez and Maria Arellano, from the folk group of the Rio de la Miel. Those interested in enrolling should contact the Villa de Nerja Cultural Centre in Granada 45, or the Municipal School itself, in Carabeo 80, before 5th February. Participants will also perform a sample of these traditional dances at the Folklore of Nerja Day to be held on May 5th. Fandango was declared of Cultural Interest in 2010. It has its roots in

flamenco but is older than this. In the late eighteenth century the first farmhouses were built in the Rio de la Miel, on the eastern border of Nerja with Granada Province, and this is where the farmhouse-born fandangos came from.

The producers responsible for Game of Thrones in Spain have chosen Nerja for one of it's major productions

Fresco Film Services who are a leading foreign producer of Sony will record a Total of 10 programmes of the new season of "Snatch". Between 22nd January to 15th May, Fresco Film Services will come to town and be present in Nerja and Maro. They will be filming Snatch, a series based on the movie starring Brad Pitt. The Councillor of Tourism, Patricia Gutierrez, welcomed the decision of the film company. She said, "There is no doubt that it is excellent news that companies in this industry select Nerja as the setting for their recordings. It will help strengthen the tourism image of Nerja beyond our borders." The councillor also thanked the work of the Police, Civil Protection and Coordinator of Operational Services and Sports for faciliating work during the filming.

Nerja council criticizes the ministry and the company responsible for not resuming work on the sewage treatment plant On the 22nd of January the company responsible for resuming the sewage works in Nerja did not recommence with the job. In addition the company have also denied that this is the case through various media sources. A meeting which took place to coordinate roadblocks and other actions necessary to resume works was also denied. The Mayor pointed out that on 24th October through the Government Office in Malaga announced that it had reached an agreement with the company to reactivate work. Now, three months later work has not started and the people of Nerja are once again left wondering if the project will ever be completed.

Renewing your floors in 2018

Thinking of renewing your home’s floors this year? Here we look at some options available to you. From the cheapest to the more expensive, some floors require professional help to lay them while others can be done with a little effort by yourself. Ceramic/Tiled floors Are one of the safest bets and one of the most commonly used, since in 2017 it was the option chosen by 24% of all Spaniards. Tiles are resistant, durable and a tremendously versatile material. They come in a variety of designs and prices, as well as the ability to adapt to environments of all kinds which makes them one of the perfect candidates for any reform. With this floor you will not have any problems with moisture or stains and they are highly resistant to shock.

In order to lay a tiled floor, it must be said that they it's not the cleanest or fastest option. You will have to add on labour to the price of the material and the tile adhesive too. However, once installed you won’t have to worry for many years to come. Try to agree an up-front price with your professional tiler, to avoid unforeseen price surprises.

Natural stone floors This is probably one of the most expensive options, but is ideal if you are looking for an exclusive finish. Being a natural product, the price range is wider and almost always higher. A marble floor is delicate to install, and even more to maintain. However, it must be recognized that despite the cost and the complications of installation, it is immensely beautiful. A natural stone floor is much more expensive than a ceramic floor but look on the postive side: it will instantaneously increase the value of your home.

Wooden floors Wooden floors are classified mostly in solid or pre-finished parquet flooring. Solid wood needs to be glued, sanded and varnished in situ. The prefinished variety is placed and glued in a floating way. As for the price, solid wood is more expensive 14 THE MARKET PLACE

than the pre-finished type. But individual solid wood planks do look nicer than their pre-finished cousin. The colours that are available are: classic oak or walnut, to other more expensive and exotic woods (Iroko, Wengué, Jatoba ...). Depending on the material used and the type of installation, the price can go up or down. Obviously, the more complex the design you are looking for, the more expensive it will be. If you request the use of ecological adhesives or varnishes, the price will increase but you will have the guarantee that there will be no contamination, neither in its application nor in its production. They are also fireproof and waterproof.

Laminate floors It is one of the most fashionable flooring in recent years because of the speed in which it is installed and because it is reasonably cheap. It can be installed on the old tiles. Depending on a code that identifies it, you can choose its quality and hardness. The code starts with AC3, but it is not recommended for average use. It is better to opt for an AC4 (also suitable for commercial premises).

expansion joints.

Vinyl floors Vinyl floors are resistant to moisture, water, wear or abrasion. They are floors that are cut with a simple cutter and can be applied straight onto the old flooring or tiles. Some are self-adhesive and others work with a click system. It is important to achieve a well levelled base so that its finish looks perfect. They come in the form of plates or slats. There are hundreds of different combinations and styles. The price, will depend on the material and the qualities chosen. These also have an AC rating.

Microcement floors Continuous flooring with no joins is a great option for those who hate dust and dirt. They are more complicated to install than vinyl and have to be done by an experienced professional but they have the advantage that they are very durable and super decorative. The great advantage is that they can be applied on top of any surface because it creates a new surface capable of resolving unevenness. They are ideal for kitchens or bathrooms, even in the form of a shower tray or for covering the walls. The material may seem a little cold, but combined with other materials this can be alleviated. Colours and finished results can be spectacular. The price will depend, above all, on the base on which you apply it and the meterage you need.

Linoleum and rubber As for finishes, you have at your fingertips all that you can imagine. Some even imitate ceramics, stone, cement ...etc The installation is done by gluing or clicking. These floors allow the use of insulating layers underneath and always require

Fortunately, we are becoming more respectful of the environment, with sustainable production and recycling, hence the rise of materials such as linoleum or natural rubber. The first is manufactured with natural and renewable raw materials. It offers an immense colour chart and is very resistant and waterproof. This makes it suitable even in kitchens or bathrooms. The second, in addition to being super resistant, waterproof and fire retardant, is antistatic and very flexible. The installation of both is very fast and not complex.

We did drive one car in the dark and used the night-vision system, which can be a bit disconcerting to use, as you naturally want to keep your eyes well and truly on the road looking through the windscreen - but you can't help keep looking down at the instrument cluster to see the road ahead on a small screen, and any pedestrians that clearly show up on the screen. In this lecture Belgian amateur photographer Ludo Slabbaert will reveal an easy and practical way to interpret art photos by dividing them into seven different categories. These categories or areas- as he likes to call them- were chosen to avoid giving the impression that it is either style or the choice of the subject that determines the characteristics of current art photography. He will illustrate his system by lots of photos of well known art photographers.

Born Marie Godebska, daughter of a Polish sculptor living in France, Misia was brought up in Brussels and Paris where she became a pupil of Gabriel Fauré and a noted concert pianist. In 1893 she married Thadée Natanson owner of ‘La Revue Blanche’ an important art magazine which featured the work of Bonnard, Vuillard, and Toulouse–Lautrec all of whom painted and drew the beautiful and talented Misia Natanson. Renoir painted her portrait while declaring her love for her, as did Edouard Vuillard and during the 1890’s the Natansons were at the centre of the Paris art world.

February Film & Tapas Evening at FTK The latest offering in the popular Film & Tapa evenings at FTK in Nerja will be screened at 7.30pm on Friday 9th February at FTK’s premises in Pasaje San Miguel (around the corner from the main Mercadona.) A true story with real twists in the plot Taken by Grace retells how Lucas Blackstone, newly released from prison where he had been serving a sentence for manslaughter, sets out to avenge the death of his young son. No sooner has he got out of jail than he burgles a house from which he steals a firearm and, attempting to keep himself below the police radar, happens upon Carrie and Shawn, a young couple who are camping in the great outdoors. They are going through a rough patch in their marriage and trying, with limited success, to deal with their issues. Blackstone isn’t content to merely steal 24 THE MARKET PLACE

their car, instead he kidnaps them and tries to get the couple - unwillingly - to assist him in his plan to murder the killer of his boy. As the story unfolds it starts to become apparent that there’s a lot more going on here than meets the eye and it takes a while for Carrie and Shawn to work out what’s happening; even so they get to grips with what’s taking place much faster than the detectives who are mystified by a contradictory trail of evidence. The climax of the film is a race against time in the hope of preventing Blackstone from killing again ... who will get there first, and will they be too late?

Miguel Ángel Jiménez Golf Academy Golf can be an expensive, time-consuming hobby. If you work all week and have family commitments it's not always convenient to disappear at the crack of dawn on a saturday or sunday and return after sundown. So how can you keep everyone happy and still get your regular golf fix?

7th hole

The answer might be found at the Miguel Ángel Jiménez Golf Academy in Torremolinos. It was officially opened in 2013, fulfilling the dream of Sr. Jiménez to establish his own golf academy, alongside a pitch & putt facility designed to be used by golfers of all abilities. The beauty of this facility is that you can be on the first tee in the morning, play your 18 holes and still be home in time for lunch!

PITCH & PUTT COURSE

Nine holes, ranging between 54 and 119 metres in length. Most feature small, raised, undulating greens to keep even the best golfers interested. Here is a great chance to test and improve your chipping and putting - which accounts for around 70% of shots on a full length golf course. Despite it's obvious lack of length the course contains a good variation of holes. Water features on a number of holes, some play uphill, some downhill, and depending on pin position there are some challenging putts to be made out there! Signature hole is the 7th, modelled on the famous 12th at Augusta - where Jordan Spieth famously threw away The Masters in 2016 after twice finding water on the way to a quadruple bogey 7.

Fully stocked pro shop

PRACTISE AREA & DRIVING RANGE

There's a 250m driving range for those who can't resist pulling the 'Big Dog' out of the bag and giving it a thump. There's also a putting green and chipping area, providing all the necessary facilities for golfers of all levels to develop their game. Manish's Zodiac predictions - February Manish Kumar Arora, K.P. Astrologer, Numerologist, Tarot Card Reader & Vastu Consultant Facebook: manishastroconsultant email: manish@manishastrologer.com Aries ( 21 March – 19 April )

Your personal philosophy will be changing. This month gives you a push towards adopting beliefs that truly work for you in the real world. You are learning about your need for self-expression through adventure. Creative projects are likely to fare well during this cycle, and could possibly even bring some type of recognition or reward. Love and romance may come into your life or an existing romance is enhanced with good humour and warmth.

Taurus ( 20 April – 20 May )

Your willingness to enjoy yourself and explore your creativity now brings new opportunities, or you might find that new avenues open up to you for exploring new ways of having fun. You could be inspired by someone else’s creative projects and begin a new and rewarding hobby. You might find that possibilities for casual love relationships open up to you now, and some of you could be overwhelmed with choices.

Gemini ( 21 May – 20 June)

Your inner world is especially active and rich this month as you find much motivation to work behind the scenes or to work on projects in relative solitude. Your mood in love is mostly adventurous, and your charm is quite natural now. A more positive and forward-looking attitude wins you many admirers. Some of you may be introspective at this time, perhaps isolating yourself from worldly activities and acquaintances a little in some manner.

Cancer ( 21 June – 22 July )

Long-term goals for personal fulfilment come into focus and give you a sense of moving forward in a positive direction. Some added responsibilities are likely during this period, but they are not felt to be burdens. This is a time when you invest in yourself and in the people around you that you respect. You are radiating energy that makes you more attractive, and, as a result, opportunities are that much stronger for romantic attention.

Leo ( 23 July – 22 August )

It’s a time to pursue the dreams, ideals, and ideas you have put on the back burner. You are also learning to express yourself with more authenticity and power. Your willpower and determination are especially strong this month, and it’s an excellent period in which to get to the root of long-standing problems and take steps to eliminate them, thereby transforming your life in positive ways.

Virgo ( 23 August – 22 September )

Your career is certainly picking up pace. You are clearer about your goals and work matters are straightforward. Others are recognizing your talents and abilities, so it’s a good time to get yourself noticed. Your drive to improve your finances is great this month. You are inclined to take chances on creative or romantic levels. Health issues, generally of a psychosomatic nature, may come to the fore. 28 THE MARKET PLACE

Libra ( 23 September – 22 October )

This is a period for personal review, when you could be reconsidering certain elements of your life and keeping more to yourself. Ideally, you get in touch with your heart’s desire after this review period. Financial concerns and mix-ups lift by mid-month, when a new budget will be helpful. Keeping your nose to the grindstone is a good idea now, although you tend to want to take the lead. Relationships are easy going and satisfying.

Scorpio ( 23 October – 21 November )

You are feeling brave, positive, and optimistic. Improvements or other opportunities at or through work can come seemingly out of the blue, boosting your confidence and improving your attitude towards the work you do. You can become especially excited and hopeful about a new health and wellness program and this lifts your spirits to new heights, giving you a sense of having a new lease on life.

Sagittarius ( 22 November -21 December )

You are feeling especially motivated to accomplish a lot of projects or tasks now. The enthusiasm of previous months is returning with great power. It’s amazing how much more you can produce when you are feeling the inner spark. Investments in stocks and other speculative matters could earn profits. Healthy, wise risks are likely to pay off, but be careful of overconfidence in speculative investments.

Capricorn ( 22 December – 19 January )

A surprising and exciting opportunity in the romance, recreation, or creativity department is likely in February. For some of you, a financial windfall is possible, or a great opportunity for a new home or real estate. Some of you will be discovering new hobbies or latent talents. Others will be more interested in sports or other forms of recreation, and deriving much pleasure from these activities.

Aquarius ( 20 January – 18 February )

Career opportunities are likely to arise this month and quite possibly of the behind-thescenes variety, or involving online endeavours. Energy for improving your skills and getting projects going runs extremely high this month, so take advantage. You may also attract unusual romances or romantic partners into your life during this cycle. You are likely to have more fun with this energy than you may have previously.

Pisces ( 19 February – 20 March )

The urge to work is weaker than usual, so if you can manage it, down time or a holiday might be in order. Finances are strong, particularly those related to the communications industry and online endeavours. You are especially intuitive when it comes to financial prospects. This is a time when you free yourself of personal inhibitions and a time of more spontaneous expression. Casual love affairs that have grown stale may be left behind now.

Young couple begin new venture Starrs Tapas & Vino is a new bar set to open this month in Plaza La Marina, Nerja. Proprietors Sam and Ana will be offering a fusion menu, drawing ideas from both their British & Spanish roots, focusing on good quality Spanish dishes with an original twist. Alongside traditionally cut Jamón Serrano, you'll find a good selection of wines and beers, both international and Spanish... Sam was born in Surrey and his family moved to Spain when he was 8 years old. He grew up in Velez-Malaga and met Ana, who is originally from Granada, by chance at the age of 17. Eventually the couple moved to the UK (a lot of growing up and a few mistakes!) where Sam worked long hours and Ana took English lessons. Both Sam and Ana spent time working in the hospitality industry where they learned a lot, and made lasting friendships. The couple were engaged in the Savoy Hotel, London and a wedding followed at Marinas de Nerja in the summer of 2016. This was the point when both Sam and Ana realised that Spain was where they wanted to be, and they began to make plans for their future together in Nerja. With their knowledge of hospitality and outgoing nature, combined with their passion for meeting new people and having a good old chat (especially Sam!) Sam and Ana begin the next chapter of their lives in sunny Nerja with the opening of their new bar, Starrs Tapas & Vino. If you have some time on the evening of Saturday February 17th, pop in for a drink and tapas - a warm welcome from Sam and Ana awaits you.

Health, Body & Soul Love your life more with advice on how to lead a healthy lifestyle

New study claims eating broccoli yoghurt could prevent bowel cancer Researchers, from the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine at the National University of Singapore, mixed probiotics with substances derived from cruciferous vegetables – such as broccoli, cauliflower and Brussel sprouts - to create an anticancer “cocktail” that has had effective results.

Sleep deprivation is increasing anxiety

Add this to your list of worries when you’re tossing and turning. Researchers at Binghamton University in New York State have discovered a link between disordered sleep and intrusive, repetitive thoughts. The scientists believe these thought patterns can lead to mental health issues like anxiety, depression and obsessivecompulsive disorder. According to their research, sleepdeprived people have a harder time turning away from “negative stimuli” - meaning that they’re likelier to fixate on negative situations, thoughts and feelings. For example, they might spend longer staring at a car crash and fretting about it after driving by. For the study, scientists tracked the eye movements of 52 adults as they looked at positive, neutral and negative images. Sure enough, sleep-deprived participants were more likely to linger on the bad ones. This finding implies that a good night’s rest - eight hours for adults - is critical for helping the brain disengage from threatening information, study co-author and psychology professor Meredith Coles said. Worse, exhaustion makes it more difficult to distinguish real perils (an attacking bear) from imaginary ones (a rustle in the bushes). The fix, at least, could be simple. To get relief from nagging, unpleasant thoughts, try getting some shut-eye. If this report convinces ruminators to get their eight hours in, Prof. Coles will count it as a win.“If [they] shift their sleep schedule and have less symptoms, that’s great,” she said. 34 THE MARKET PLACE

When tested on mice with colon cancer tumours, the experimental mix was seen to decrease the number of tumours by 75 percent. It was also noted that the remaining tumours had diminished in size — they were three times smaller than those detected in the animals' control counterparts, which had not been administered the combination. Furthermore the “superfood” concoction killed more than 95 percent of bowel cancer cells grown in a laboratory. “One

exciting aspect of our strategy is that it just capitalises on our lifestyle, potentially transforming our normal diet into a sustainable, low-cost therapeutic regimen. We hope that our strategy can be a useful complement to current cancer therapies," says researcher Matthew Chang. To create the substance, researchers engineered a harmless bacteria called E.coli Nissle, which is found in the gut. They then developed it into a probiotic that attached to the surface of bowel cancer cells. Once there, it secretes an enzyme that converts a substance found in cruciferous vegetables into an anti-cancer agent. Professor Dr Chun-Loong Ho, who also worked on the study, believes the new mix will help to prevent colorectal cancer tumours from forming as well as getting rid of remaining cancer cells after the surgical removal of tumours.

Junk food as harmful to the body as a lifethreatening disease, study claims According to a new study, indulging in pizza and fries can be as harmful on the body as catching a life-threatening disease. Scientists at the University of Bonn, Germany, have discovered that fast food can cause the immune system to act as if it’s being attacked by a serious infection. Tests showed that diets high in fat, sugar and sodium makes immune cells more aggressive over time, which increases the risk of developing a chronic health condition. What’s more is that the harm caused by junk food lasts long after you switch to a healthy diet, rich in fruit and vegetables. “It has only recently been discovered the innate immune system has a form of memory,” researcher Professor Eicke Latz said. “After an infection, the body's defences remain in a kind of alarm state, so they can respond more quickly to a new attack.” For the study, researchers conducted experiments on mice and humans. Mice were given Western-style diets that were high in fat and sugar, and low in fibre. They found food caused the mice to develop a strong inflammatory response through their body. “The unhealthy diet led to an unexpected increase in the number of certain immune cells in the blood of the mice, especially granulocytes and monocytes,” said lab member Dr Anette Christ. “This was an indication for an involvement of immune cell progenitors in the bone marrow.” Researchers believe this could explain the link between fast food and the hardening of arteries. They think the inflammatory messengers causes the immune cells to migrate to alternated blood vessel walls. When they get too large they can then burst, leading to clots and an increase in heart attacks and strokes.

Amethyst

Colour: Amethyst comes in all shades of purple and can show several shades within the same gem. It exists from opaque to transparent, therefore quality and value of Amethyst can vary widely. The most valuable stones show a deep rich colour with a clear transparency.

Famous Amethysts: The Kent Amethyst’s: An English Royal set of a necklace, earrings, three brooches and a pair of hair combs. Originally their belonged to Queen Victoria’s mother, the Dutchess of Kent and still belong to the Royal Jewels today.

The Napoleonic Amethyst Parure: This impressive set consists of a tiara, a pair of bracelets, earrings and a series of brooches and pins. Augusta de Bavaria been given it by her mother-in-law, the Empress Jósephine. The jewels came to Sweden with her daughter Jósephine and remained in the Swedish Royal Family ever since.

Gemstone Family:

Healing properties:

Amethyst belongs to Quartz, the largest gemstone family in the world which covers a large percentage of the earth’s crust.

Amethyst has been known as a healing stone for thousands of years, has a calming effect and stimulates inner peace. Because of that it also is a strong gemstone used in meditations. It strengthens the ability of concentration and helps to deal mentally with experiences. It is said, an Amethyst under the pillow helps a sleeping person to clarify his/her dreams. Physically Amethyst alleviates pain, swelling and tenseness and helps with illnesses of respiratory tract, lung, skin and nerves. It also assists with diarrhea and disorder of the intestinal flora.

Hardness:

7 ; out of a scale 1-10 (10 being the hardest)

Origin:

Quartz exists worldwide, however the largest deposits of Amethyst are found in Australia, Brazil, Uruguay, Mexico, India, Japan, Madagascar, Namibia and Zambia.

Queen Alexandra’s Amethysts: Tsar Alexander 3 of Russia gave Queen Alexandra, sister to his wife, a tiara with 7 large Siberian Amethysts, one of the best sources of high-quality Amethysts. Later on, Alexandra commissioned an Amethyst necklace to coordinate with the tiara. They stayed in the Russian Royal family until 1945 when the set was sold at auction to a private collector.

The Tavistock Amethysts: This set of a necklace and tiara is probably the most gorgeous for the wine-coloured amethysts (from 1870) and belongs to the Bedfords, a British aristocratic family.

The Norwegian Amethyst Necklace Tiara: This necklace can be converted into a tiara and belongs to the Norwegian Royal collection. 36 THE MARKET PLACE

The Royal British Legion, Nerja Branch Our branch has been fortunate to welcome several new members, and as well as swelling our numbers they are all enthusiastic and willing to give their time and energy to our efforts to raise money for the Legion. Anyone who has ever been involved with charity work will know how important it is to have support and interest in whatever you are trying to achieve. So to those who have recently joined us, please don’t ever doubt our gratitude, we value your contributions. Your input will be of particular importance this year as we celebrate 100 years since the end of the WW1, 30 years since our branch was founded, 100 years since the formation of 40 THE MARKET PLACE

the Royal Air Force. We are intending to hold various events to mark each of these, and details will follow once final arrangements are made and of course we will continue to have our twice monthly lunches, at the Al Andalus Hotel in Maro and Neuvo Arenas restaurant in La Herradura. Anyone interested in coming to either can book with Vera on: 952967200 Email: ozzybaldwin@yahoo.co.uk

Thirty years ago Brigadier Billy Beyts and some other retired service men and women decided to form the Nerja Branch and it was inaugurated on the 23rd September 1988. The membership then was 33 and we are lucky enough to still have some of these founder members still with us. It is to their credit that the branch was and still is active and lively. Billy was a serving member of the Army for 21 years before moving to

Brigadier Billy Beyts Kenya. He eventually settled in Nerja with his second wife Linda. Our branch has seen its fair share of characters, such as Jake Sanders, Charlie and Peggy Howe, Jim and Vera Bromley and many, many others. To them all we say “Thank You”. Without your efforts there would be no branch today, and what a pity that would be.

Introduce more fruit & vegetables into your diet of acid for the base of some sauces in meats and fish.

Sweet Potatoes Another of the most popular vegetables in winter here in Spain is the sweet potato which you can even find already slightly cooked in local vegetable shops. The aroma once cooked is simply delicious, it really reminds you of the lovely winter season here. It is low in calories, highly nutritious with a sweet flavour. It can easily be used in desserts or just on it's own as a snack or combined with some slices of fresh cheese. The sweet potato is eaten mostly roasted in the oven but can also be mashed like normal potato (for an even tastier way I add a few Indian seeds to spice it up) or sweet potato lasagna can be made. It can be combined with pine nuts and is really tasty cooked in a "tortilla" or in a sweet cake. A very versatile vegetable!

Fruit and vegetables in this part of the world are some of the freshest and tastiest available, so make sure you take advantage of the fruit/ vegetables and produce that are grown in Spain - especially those that are seasonal and grown in the cooler, winter months. Make 2018 your year of plant-based eating After the Christmas and New Year Holiday we often think of New Years Resolutions, especially after all the excess of the holidays. These resolutions often emphasize the word "no"

No more sugar! No more snacks! Cut out all fat! No carbs! There’s something about January that makes us want to re-group and renew. It might be motivational to put strict food rules in place, but this kind of thinking can make food seem like the enemy. I’m not a big fan of resolutions that focus on negatives. Food should be your ally on the path to health and wellbeing.

Some people may be put off because they think a plant-based diet equals never eating meat. But you don’t have to become a vegetarian or vegan to get the benefits of plantcentric eating. Meals can still include meat, dairy foods and eggs, but the portions will be smaller and you might eat them less frequently. Your plate will be full of vegetables, grain foods, legumes, fruit and nuts.

Stay Positive

Resolve to Eat More Plants

I prefer New Year’s resolutions that focus on foods to include. For example, my list of resolutions for 2017 included “eat more eggs.” When I needed a quick and simple evening meal, I made a vegetable omelette. Eggs also are an easy solution for high-protein breakfasts. For 2018, I have another goal in mind. If you’re looking for resolutions you can stick to longterm that promote health and help with weight control, you can’t go wrong with a goal of eating more plant foods. Research points to multiple health benefits of plantbased diets, from lower risk for heart disease and diabetes to easier weight management.

If you’d like to give this a try, here are five user-friendly resolutions that involve boosting the amount of plant foods you eat. Pick one to add to your list or adopt all five. Eat at least one meatless evening meal per week. This can be as easy as making that omelette dinner or as adventurous as making a full-on vegan meal with pesto tomato flatbread, grilled eggplant and a black bean and corn salad. As you find new recipes, you can expand to two or three meatless meals per week. Cut back on meat portions. When you serve steak, does each person get their own 8-ounce ribeye? Cut back on portions. Two people can share that steak. And then fill out your plate with a savoury bean casserole loaded with celery, carrots, garlic, onion, tomato and peppers, and perhaps a baked white or sweet potato. Use less meat in recipes. For example, if you make lasagna, use half the recommended meat, or cut it out entirely. Instead, add sautéed vegetables or cooked drained spinach. Other dishes that work just fine with less meat include spaghetti sauce, chili, burritos, tacos, pizza and sandwiches. Investigate alternative protein foods for salad or vegetable-centric meals. Whether you make your own salad or buy take-out salad, alternative protein options are readily available. Instead of chicken or bacon, use toasted walnuts, chickpeas, tofu or grated cheese. There are plenty of options that don’t involve meat. Expand your grain repertoire. Whole grains are filling and packed with nutrients. They’re also deliciously hearty with unique flavours. Most grocery stores now have several types of rice alone, along with other options including barley, bulgur, buckwheat, millet, farro and quinoa. Many now come pre-cooked and ready to use in casseroles, soups and grain salads. Have a family grain taste test and stock your pantry with four or five favourites. Eating more plant foods doesn’t just mean a bigger pile of steamed broccoli or a chunk of tofu on your plate. Legumes, grains, nuts and fruit are all plant foods. This wide variety makes meals more interesting. Experiment with seasonings from cuisines that emphasize plant foods, such as those of India, Central America or Korea. A.P.A. NERJA THE PAIN OF DOG RESCUE Our last few articles have been uplifting, happy and full of optimism for the future of APA Nerja and the work it does for the abused, abandoned and lost dogs of Nerja and the surrounding area but underneath that joy of rescue, foster and adoption there lies a dark and painful reality. Since the beginning of December last year APA Nerja has been overwhelmed, stretched and strained with the number of abandoned and abused dogs taken into our care but it didn’t end there – because to date APA has taken 51 puppies into their care – how do we know the number – because a spreadsheet is needed to co-ordinate their care, their feeding, their foster and their vaccinations – puppies which WILL find homes through the dedication of the APA re-homers in Spain and other European countries but why – why were they dumped in rubbish bins, born on river beds, left in a box outside the vet and hurled to their death – only four survived out of ten puppies thrown from the viaduct at Maro.

were such playful and loving puppies, it was mystery to everyone why they weren’t adopted straight away. Sadly several months passed and all four were still waiting for their forever home. Eventually Peter got adopted locally and Bruce went to Sweden. But Tony and Clarkey were still waiting. Finally their time came and everyone at APA was thrilled when both were adopted. Tony was adopted locally just before Christmas and Clarkey went to Holland in the new year. Both dogs settled into their new homes straight away and finally have the loving homes they both deserve.

Sancha TALK TO THE PAW – FEBRUARY 2018 – ALEX’S APPEAL Hi, Rubio here, all the way from Holland – I got my forever home - YAY – what a lucky boy I am! Thank you APA; I had a lovely last day in sunny Nerja; with a trip to the beauty parlour (I didn’t know I had white socks!), a nice long walk along my favourite beach, and lots of cuddles and kisses! Of course, I know I’ll be missed, now that you’ve got to know me so well. So, I’m handing over this very special job to my penmate, Alex, a big old boy, but a real softie. He’s looking for his forever home too – hope he’s as lucky as I am!

Although the size of our vet's accounts sometimes gives us great cause for concern, and that's knowing that as a registered charity we receive a substantial discount, Tail was humbled by the sums donated when we posted that we had taken in two strays that required between them three very substantial and costly operations.

Feena At the time of writing we are delighted to say that two of the operations have been carried out and Feena and Babu are progressing very satisfactorily and give every indication that the reconstructive surgery has been successful. They are being kept quiet and cared for in foster homes. The donations that came in specifically to help with this challenge as near as damn it covered the specialist vet's charges; we are grateful to all. One or two people did pose the moral and/or theoretical point of view that such sums should not be spent on just two homeless dogs and questioned whether it would not have been better apportioned elsewhere and these two unfortunates put to sleep. Tail well comprehends this point of view but cannot agree with it. Tail has a No Kill policy for healthy animals – as does the law in Spain, thus the large demonstrations against Perreras all over the country last month – but that again questions what is a healthy animal. The volunteers who run and give help at Tail do so to the best of their abilities and consciences, if you do not agree then come and help and explain what you would change. You would be most welcome even for just a few hours a week.

nestles between the Punta de la Mona to the east and the rock of Cerro Gordo to the west. The bay enjoys shelter from west winds creating mostly crystal-clear waters, and is a popular location for water sports & paragliding. There are numerous beach bars and restaurants serving specialities of the region, including tropical salads, fresh fish or paella. The Marina del Este near La Herradura is tucked betwen Punta de la Mona to the west and Cotobro to the east. It boasts a beautiful port, elegantly designed to incorporate select shops, art galleries, bars and restaurants. This small strip of coast also claims to be the best place to dive between Almeria and Gibraltar, and is home to one of the areas leading diving schools.

Nerja

was once a sleepy fishing village but now the town has a population of over 21,000. The Balcón de Europa is a magnificent promenade that was made famous by King Alfonso XII , who’s statue now takes pride of place at the far end. Close by is the 17th century Church of El Salvador, and the beautiful gardens of Capistrano Playa. There are many beaches to be found either side and in front of the town, including Burriana with its numerous cafés and restaurants. Here too, you can take advantage of the water sports on offer, including water skiing, scuba diving and sailing. Just outside Nerja on the coast road towards Maro is a very impressive aquaduct which used to supply the local sugar factory.

Torre del Mar

is just 30 minutes from Malaga, and is the beach resort of Velez Málaga. Its population of 21,000 grows between June and September to 150,000. The towns attractions have expanded over the last few years to cope with the demand, and now the four kilometres of beach have been enhanced by an impressive promenade, which stretches all the way to Caleta de Vélez, a port providing over 200 berths and offering sailing and water sports. Throughout the summer, there are many Chiringuitos on the beach, serving fresh barbequed fish and ice cold beers. In 2002, Paseo de Larios was pedestrianized, and is now a tranquil promenade, with plenty of pavement cafés and restaurants. At the seafront end of Larios is a line of bars and discos which continue throughout the night on Fridays and Saturdays. The history of Torre is uncertain, but it is thought that it might have been part of an ancient Greek settlement, known as Mainake, which was destroyed by the Carthaginians. Tombs of the Carthaginians were found at the mouth of the river Velez. More recently, it was a small fishing village until major development began in the 1970’s.

Lake Viñuela

is a 15 minute drive from the N340 Autovia, leaving at the junction for Velez Malaga. Head inland along the A356; this direction also leads to numerous inland white villages. The first turning on our map is to Benamocarra, which is sign posted to the right after the last roundabout into Velez Malaga. This road will take you back over the main road and then also on to Iznate, and divides to take you to Almachar, El Borge and Cutar. The second turning off the A356 is on the right (after the Repsol garage) to Trapiche. Continue on the A356, and immediately you will see another junction on the left, sign posted to Benamargosa, Triana, Comares and Cutar. This road will also take you as far as Rio Gordo (for a scenic drive). There is a popular Spanish bar on the corner of this junction called El Cruz. Back on the A356, continue on and you will pass another junction on the right, to Canillas de Aceituno, and finally you will see Lake Vinuela in front of you. Turn right before the lake for Puente de Don Manuel, Alcaucin, Viñuela and Periana; carry straight on for Los Romanes, Rio Gordo and Colmenar.

Competa is famous for its sweet muscatel wine, which is available in most bars, but highly potent, so drink with care!

Frigiliana

encompass 39.74 sq km within which live just over 3,000 people year round. Frigiliana is a popular tourist destination, and because there are many holiday homes here, the population triples during the summer months. The history of Frigiliana dates from prehistoric times. The village has been inhabited by numerous civilisations from the Phoenicians and Romans to the Arabs, who had the greatest impact on the town’s development. During the Christian reconquest, Frigiliana was the site of numerous battles culminating in the famous battle of the Rock of Frigiliana in 1569 which ended in the complete expulsion of the Moorish people. One can learn the history of this struggle by walking through the streets of the historic section where there are a series of twelve ceramic plaques posted about which explain the entire story.
