National Police Officer in jail for running brothel
Following expiry of long term concessions on some of the Chiringuitos on Burriana Beach in Nerja in 2009, the previous council the PP chose to extend the concessions on a yearly basis. However, the current council which is shared by the PSOE, IU and EVA Podemos announced that the concessions would be put out to tender once again. The process may still be postponed as the council has now detected irregularities in the concessions of six beach bars on Burriana. Some of them do not comply with accessibility regulations, some have no opening licences and others lack of a goods inventory. The councillor stated it is a serious situation and wants to have an audit, blaming the previous council for the improper management of the concessions.

popcorn day 19th january So why do we love popcorn? Well the obvious answer because it’s so tasty! But we also relate it to watching a great film and having a relaxing time with our friends or family. When TV was invented in the 1950s there was a huge decline in popcorn sales because people were not going to the cinema. But in the 21st century we can make it in the microwave, stick on a DVD and make our very own movie night! Try it on the 19th January - or even better go to the movies instead.
The Arcadian Modern at the Museo de Picasso, Malaga until the 5th February This is a major retrospective of artist Joaquín Torres-García, known as one of the principal creators of the Mediterranean movement Noucentisme. The exhibition features the entire range of subject matter that the artist approached throughout his career, with highlights focussing on two fundamental moments, the first being his participation in the European avant-garde movement, the second being his sojourn in New York and his striking repertoire of synthetic abstraction.
cervical cancer prevention week 23-29 jan This January the European Cervical Cancer Association (ECCA) runs Cervical Cancer Prevention Week. Over six days, the organisation wants to draw awareness to cervical cancer by providing information on the development of the disease and prevention. Jo’s Cervical Cancer Trust needs you to help them express and get across to people just how important it is to your health and well-being to attend a screening.
The day is all about remembering those who were victims of the holocaust and how their lives were brutally changed by Nazi persecution. On the memorial day we can remember those whose lives were changed by learning from these past mistakes and organising local events to inform people and remember the importance of standing up against hatred, discrimination and persecution.
CABALGATA DE REYES DE VELEZ MALAGA Centro Historico Velez Malaga - 5th January The most special night of the year is here and their Majesties the Kings of the Orient are ready to bring surprises for the younger children. Melchior, Gaspar and Balthazar will be riding around the streets of Vélez-Málaga with their camels, their pages and their floats overflowing with toys, gifts and sweets. The excitement can be seen in the faces of all the children. And also in the parents' faces. After an intense evening of excitement and maybe one or two struggles to get the sweets that their Majesties the Kings of the Orient have thrown, the children must go to bed. Will there be presents under the Christmas tree the following morning? Will the Three Kings make all our wishes come true, or will they surprise us with a lump of coal? Don't forget to leave some food for the Three Kings and their camels!
FESTIVAL OF SAN SEBASTIAN in the pueblo of Algarrobo 14th & 15th January Algarrobo will hold a festival in honour of its patron saint, San Sebastian, on 15th January. The festivities start on Saturday 14th, when the patron saint is transported from his chapel at the top of the town down to the parish church of Santa Ana. Sunday is the most important day of the celebrations. From early in the day you can enjoy performances by groups from the town and gastronomic tastings of the most famous dishes and drinks of the region. When the afternoon comes, the Saint is taken back up to his hermitage. In the same way as when he is brought down, the procession is accompanied by floats and fireworks.

Tough Mudder?
It's January and time for another diet, health and fitness push! All that overindulgence during the festive season has probably meant a few extra kilos around the waistline and a greater desire to get out and do some exercise... What is a Tough Mudder? Well, if so, consider the latest trend in running - but not just running, with obstacles too! In the UK and America these events are generally known as "Tough Mudders" or "Spartan". They are typically endurance events in which participants attempt a 10km long military style obstacle course. Well guess what? These events have now arrived in Spain! In 2016 Riders Running held 2 events in our area, one in Alhama de Granada in May and one in Lake Vinuela in November. These events have proved immensely popular and many of them raise valuable money for charity and are also designed to promote teamwork amongst groups of people. Unlike other competitive sports these races often contain obstacles that would be impossible for a single person to tackle and are designed to encourage groups to help each other conquer each challenge. If a team enters they support each other and overcome any members fears by constant reassurance and this inspires them to achieve more than they would under normal circumstances. The first tough mudder challenge was held in America in 2010, it has been hailed as one of the fastest growing athletic activities with 2.5 million people having already participated in one of these types of events and their popularity is surging. When you think "obstacle course" you might imagine something to get under or over, some tyres to hop through - but make no mistake, it is not for the faint hearted. These events are skillfully prepared and are meant to test both mental and physical strength. The Riders Running event in Vinuela had obstacles like; pulling tyres, monkey bars, running up a river and swimming in parts, climbing over A-frames, swimming in the lake and crawling under a lot of barbed wire. 12 THE MARKET PLACE

Reflections on the VInuela Race I competed in my first Tough Mudder which was the Vinuela race in November of 2016. With only 3-4 weeks preparation and training I was unsure if I should even be entering the race. Before the race my nerves were showing, but entering with a group of friends and the cameraderie and support really helped boost my confidence. This was our groups first real taste of what a tough mudder was all about and glancing around at the rest of the competitors made us feel a little uneasy as they all seemed really professional. We put on our war paint and waited apprehensively for the starters gun with more than a bit of trepidation. However, the excitement of the event with the fun atmosphere and music really took over and the energy and determination to succeed really helped carry you through the course. When I needed assistance to complete any of the obstacles there would always be one of my teammates or someone else on the course that was prepared to help. I remember one of my facebook friends in the UK saying, "A tough mudder, but there can't be much mud in Spain". He honestly could not have been more wrong, on the edge of Lake Vinuela the whole shoreline was a metre deep in mud and many competitors lost their shoes in the sludge. You could not see people's faces for the brown sludge that was splattered on them. Having already done a half marathon and now this event, I can safely say the buzz was much greater doing this. There was always something to keep you interested and motivated all the way along, a fresh challenge to master every step of the way, you soon forgot about any aches and pains ... until the end anyway!
Female only Tough Mudder? If you would feel uncomfortable doing an event like the tough mudder where the majority of the competitors are men there is always the opportunity to take part in a women only event. The first female only mud race to arrive in Spain will take place on 21st May in Malaga. It is not that ladies can't and shouldn't do the normal Tough Mudder, but lots of ladies would feel more comfortable with their girlfriends and it is a good way to ease into doing these testing events. The mud race in Malaga is also a shorter distance event at only 5km and is geared towards all types of ladies, those that want can walk, run or jog around the course. This particular race is also in support of breast cancer. So no matter if you are in shape or not, you are young or old you will spend an amazing day getting around the course surrounded by your friends. It advisable and much more fun if you enter as a team
but you can enter as a single if you wish and all the women completing will help on the course. See website: www.es.muddyangelrun.com
Other Events in 2017 Another fantastic starter race is the variation on the Color Runs, so called Color Obstacle Rush. This event will be held on the 19th February 2017 at the Martin Carpena Stadium in Malaga and involves just a 5km run with 15 obstacles of which 5 of them are colour stations where colour is sprayed on people. This race is very lighthearted, so if you feel you are not able to complete an obstacle you can skip it and get on with the next one. The whole idea of this race is the taking part and having fun while doing exercise and listening to music! Website: www.colorobstaclerush.es There is also a race called X Letix Malaga Challenge which will be held 60 minutes from Malaga by car in a suitable rural area on the 20th May 2017. In this event you can choose the length of the race you want to compete in either Small, Medium or Large. Small is around 6km, Medium 12km and Large 18km. It is an obstacle course designed for teams and the obstacles can be quite difficult to complete. You can also choose if you are going to enter to be timed in a race or just complete as a team for the fun and atmosphere of the event. See website : www.es.xletix.com There are also the Riders Running races that may happen but there have not been firm announcements yet. See: www.ridersrunning.com

TRENDY TECH arriving in 2017 New iPhone 8
The next iPhone is going to be a major refresh for the product, according to a various reports and rumors. The so-called iPhone 8 is said to have an all-glass design, an organic LED display for better images, no home button, new screen sizes, and more. It's also reported that Apple is working on adding built-in augmented reality features - think Pokemon Go, but for all kinds of apps - but that might not make it into the next phone. 2017 will mark the iPhone's tenth birthday, so expect Apple to go all out to mark the occasion.

New Form Factors from Fitbit
Fitbit launches new fitness trackers every year, but 2017 could have a twist. The company said recently that it's exploring new form factors for its products. What does that mean? It's unclear, but it sounds like we may see Fitbit expand beyond fitness trackers you wear on your wrist.
Samsung Galaxy S8 Samsung's first opportunity to recover from the Galaxy Note 7 debacle will come with the launch of its new flagship phone, the Galaxy S8, in the spring of 2017. While there's not been much revealed about the device so far, Samsung has announced that it will include a new digital assistant powered by Viv, the artificial intelligence startup Samsung bought earlier this year. Oh, and Viv was founded by the same people who built Siri.
Xbox Project Scorpio
While the iMac has been updated with new, high-resolution displays in recent years, it's been a long time since Apple has significantly updated the computer. Bloomberg's Gurman reported that Apple has considered adding the new USB-C port to the iMac lineup, which makes sense since the company's other computers are adopting the new standard too. However, there haven't been any solid reports on the timing of a new iMac. 16 THE MARKET PLACE
Microsoft is going to supercharge the Xbox. The company is currently working on Project Scorpio, a more powerful version of the Xbox One designed for 4K TVs and potentially virtual reality headsets like the Oculus Rift. The console will be aimed at gamers who value performance over everything else. It's expected to launch in the autumn of 2017.

Sierra Nevada The 2016-17 winter ski season in Sierra Nevada leaped into full throttle with exceptionally snowy conditions and by the end of the first week over 70kms (out of a maximum 106kms) of pristine skiable slopes were already open including the Laguna de la Yeguas and Montebajo areas. Since then further significant snowfall has brought the number of skiable slopes to just short of 100kms of skiing currently available. The Christmas/New Year period is looking to be one of the best in recent memory!
W
ith such spectacular conditions, why not check your calendars and get in touch with Sierra Essence and the British Ski Center to arrange a visit! As usual Sierra Nevada is planning a typically long season, running up to the beginning of May 2017.
open slopes that, even during busy times, rarely become heavily crowded – especially if you can come mid-week! This sense of space creates an innate sense of well-being and hence beginners tend to be naturally more relaxed from the very early stages of learning.
Whilst there is great scope for all range of skiing and snowboarding abilities, the immaculate snow conditions, pristine piste management and superb open layout of the ski terrain creates arguably some of the best situations for learning to ski.
The nursery slopes are very well located within the realms of the ski domain with easy access from the two main gondola’s that come up from the ski village. There are bars/restaurants and sun-terraces close by. The natural bowl in which the nursery slopes are situated is also the gateway to other ski areas and thereby makes the whole ski experience in Sierra Nevada a very compatible one for groups of mixed abilities whereby everyone gets to not only have a great ski but can easily meet up periodically for coffee breaks & lunch.
Novices to the sport are typically nervous about personal injuries, especially those of us no longer in our carefree teenage years! With the correct instruction provided by the native English instructors of the British Ski Center, you will find your confidence very quickly as you slide over wide
Families with children love Sierra
Nevada for these points as well as the child care facilities of which the crèche at the base of the Al-Andalus gondola is one and the well-appointed “Dreamland” snow garden, located up on the pistes next to the nursery slopes, is another. The open layout to the ski terrain also allows for great visual navigation and hence avoids the necessity to constantly draw out your piste map. Parents thus feel much more confident about skiing around with their kids where they don’t have to worry about taking wrong turns whilst they, themselves, do their utmost to simply keep up with their speeding little urchins! Sierra Nevada is actually one of the highest resorts in Europe without a glacier. From the ski village base of 2100 metres up to the top lift of 3300 metres, an impressive 1200 metres of vertical drop skiing awaits. The ski terrain consists predominantly of blue and red runs and so in addition to the excellent nursery slopes, the ski terrain highly suits the intermediate skier who will be able to adventure most, if not all, of the ski areas within the ski domain. Advanced skiers will simply love the open terrain and the extensive off-piste opportunities. The ridges of the Tajos de la Virgen in the Laguna area, offer some great technical couloir style skiing whilst the world cup Fuente del Tesoro and Neveros blacks offer both steep gradient and length of piste. Sierra Nevada is well reputed as Europe’s sunniest ski resort. Whilst this does not mean the cloud doesn’t come in, there really is nothing quite so perfect as skiing on quality prepared slopes under a blazing winter sun and deep

blue skies – it really is a Skier’s idealism and there really is nowhere like Sierra Nevada for realistically experiencing it!! Those of you with a little more ski experience under your belts will be simply awe-struck by the views from the Veleta peak across the Mediterranean and even so far as the Rif mountains of Morocco. Perhaps one of Sierra Nevada’s greatest advantages over and above the majority of European ski resorts is its long season. Running typically from the end of November until the beginning of May, the full 5 months alone give greater scope for choice as to when to visit but more than this, the quality of late season skiing here is about the best you can possibly find. Considering first of all, some of the heaviest snowfalls tend to occur during the latter stages of March and throughout April. Then, the region of the Granada province has a typically dry atmospheric climate. What this means is that with the relative lack of atmospheric humidity, the snow absorbs much less of it and hence the quality remains much better and skiable for much longer periods than in other resorts which become extremely slushy and sticky very early on. As such, even at the end of April we can still feasibly ski great quality snow well into the afternoon. If you are undecided when to travel and are flexible with your dates, then we
recommend visiting during the quieter periods such as from mid-January to early February or from the second week of March onwards.

Car News
by Martin Ward
First Driving Impressions – Hyundai Ioniq Hybrid and Ioniq EV The Hyundai Ioniq is the world's first car to offer three electrified powertrains in one bodyshell. These are: petrol/electric hybrid, pure electric which are available to order now - and a Plug-In Hybrid due in 2017.
W
e went down to Hyundai UK HQ in High Wycombe to try first the Hybrid and then the EV. The Ioniq is a unique design and Hyundai have not tried to put all this new technology in a current car, so the car has literally been designed around the various, complex powertrains. The Hybrid is powered by a 1.6-litre petrol engine that produces 141ps, coupled to an electric motor that produces 43ps. It is always difficult to describe in words exactly how the Hybrid system works, but here goes… You start the car as normal, in this case by pressing a Stop/Start button situated next to the steering wheel, put it into Drive if you want to go forward, or Reverse if you want to go the other way (that bit is simple) and away it goes, normally under Electric Power, and the engine does not start. After a while, the engine fires up and takes over from electric and the clever thing is you cannot feel when this is happening. There is a light on the speedo cluster that goes from EV to Eco, which means when the EV light goes out, then it is under petrol power. When you take your foot off the accelerator, very quickly, the ECO (petrol power) lights goes out, and up lights the green EV light, meaning no petrol, the car is being powered by electric. As you go into a coast mode, then energy produced goes back to the Lithion Ion battery and is stored there, ready for use a bit later. Your style of driving would change if you owned or drove one of these for a while, and you would be trying to get maximum mpg out of it. On the short test route of around 35 minutes which included small towns, villages and a couple of junctions on the M40 I managed to get 58.7mpg, and I thought I had done well... but very annoyingly, somebody else took the same car out just after me, did the same route, and got over 64mpg. How cross was I…GGGGrrrrrrrr – so annoyed! The Ioniq is fitted with a very smooth 7-speed DCT automatic gearbox. As good and much improved as CVT gearboxes are getting in other Hybrid vehicles, this DCT is so much more pleasant to drive. The Hybrid will be available in three models: SE which costs £19,995 and has 15-inch alloy wheels, cruise control, rear parking sensors and rear view camera, Autonomous Emergency Braking, and may more bits and pieces. Then the Premium, which I think is the one to have, that costs from £21,795 and has heated front
20 THE MARKET PLACE
seats, heated steering wheel, BI-Xenon headlights with LED rear combination lamps, 7-inch LCD display with satellite navigation. Finally the Premium SE that has leather seats and other nice goodies. The Hybrid has one of those ridiculous foot / parking brakes which is situated to the left of the foot brake. You press it to put the parking brake on, and press it again to release it. Stupid place to put it, I know other manufacturers put it there, but just because others do it, doesn’t make it right….. After the Hybrid it was the turn of the Pure Electric, which we have to say from the start does cost more than the Hybrid. There will be two models in the EV range: Premium which costs £28,995 and the Premium SE which is priced at £30,795, but the EV does have a slightly better spec than the Hybrid, so doing a direct comparison is not easy, but nevertheless it is around £7,000 more. Customers could potentially get a £4500 Government Grant towards the purchase of this car. Like the Hybrid, you push the start button, press either Drive or Reverse. The EV has a very nice electric parking brake in the centre console, so easy to use, and so much better than that foot brake thing – so the question is, if the Ioniq EV has an electric parking brake, then why hasn’t the Hybrid? Penny pinching, or just trying to be too clever. Either way, that foot / parking brake needs to be replaced. Back to the EV, after that rant. So you set off nice and quietly, and quickly, and after glancing at the ‘Miles Left in the battery (we had 96 miles) we drove it on the same route as the Hybrid. On the M4 it easily cruised at 70mph, take your foot off the accelerator and you get power going back into the battery, which gives you extra range. The official range on a full charge is 174 miles, but this is always dependent on driving style, weather conditions and other factors, such as driving at night with the lights on. The EV was so easy to drive, very intuitive and has everything in the right place. Using the adjustable regenerative braking took just a few minutes to get used to. This is operated via the paddles on the steering wheel column, if you press the one on the left hand side then this acts as a brake and generates more electric and slows you down much quicker. Use the paddle on the right, and slowing down is much slower, but generates less electric heading towards the batteries. I’m not sure if the brake lights are lit up when using this brake regeneration, if not then the driver behind will not know you are slowing down at potentially quite a rapid rate. After driving both powertrains that are currently available, then for me, the Hybrid wins in most departments, as it is just so much more useable, and cheaper, and if driven carefully and using the systems to their best advantage, it will be easily capable to get the same, or even better, than an economical diesel. The Ioniq, whether Hybrid or EV, offers a good level of standard specification, is well put together at Hyundai’s plant in South Korea, and has loads of room for five adults - and a good sized boot too. Ioniq Plug-In prices and specification will be announced prior to its on-sale date next year.

Nerja Decorative & Fine Arts Society Tuesday January 10th at 6pm Casa Cultura, Calle Granada, Nerja Tickets only available on the night from 5pm The Ashcan School and American Realism artists A Fully Illustrated Lecture in English by Tricha Passes Sponsored by Iberian Funeral Plans The Ashcan School was an artistic movement in the United States during the early twentieth century that is best known for works portraying scenes of daily life in New York, often in the city’s poorer neighbourhoods. About Tricha Passes Tricha took her BA(Hons) at the Courtauld Institute, University of London and won the Sotheby’s Prize for a research project on Edvard Munch and the Christiana Avant-garde. Her MA studies were undertaken in the Visual Culture Department at Bath Spa University.
The lecture will explore the marvellous range of work produced by this group of artists in New York City before the First World War. Drawn by the realism of Dutch seventeenth century artists and the influence of nineteenth century French artists such as Courbet and Manet these young American artists sought to capture life in all its variety on the streets of New York. Their subject matter included leisure activities such as shopping and entertainment, immigrants arriving in the tenements on the Lower East side, playing and recreation in Central Park and swimming at Coney Island. The Ash Can group wanted above all for emerging American artists to find a voice for ‘their own art in their own land’.
Tricha has taught continually in the Art History Department at Bristol University since 2005 and in History since 2013. In 2009 she won the Teaching and Learning prize for the Faculty of Arts at the University of Bristol. She also has taught in the Visual Culture Department at the Faculty of Creative Arts at Bristol UWE since 1998, the Department for Continuing Education at Oxford University since 2008 and on American Studies Programmes in London since 1999. In December 2013, Tricha became an accredited lecturer for NADFAS. For further information contact Helen Sijsling: helen.sijsling@gmail.com

Music Room. A magical place that took us back centuries with the portraits of one of the owners, Gonzalo FernandezPrieto´s family surrounding an antique grand piano. We were entertained by the charming Noviembre Duo to an array of Arias. The couple, Miguel Angel Latorre – Piano and Elena Garrido - Soprano are students of music at Málaga University but performed liked seasoned professionals. We listened to classical opera with a feeling that we had been transported to one of the Grand Houses of Spain.
We then enjoyed a typical Christmas Meal which a Spanish household would serve when family and friends visited them during December using old traditional recipes handed down to Gonzalo. The fayre was simple with soup, a turkey and wild mushroom stew and a colourful meringue with fresh fruits reflecting our hosts aim to make us welcome in his home in the “Spanish Way”. The table for the meal was truly amazing, 32 matching place settings with antique porcelain, silverware and crystal making everyone nervous about having
an accident and breaking something (Hyacinth Bucket’s nervous neighbour Elizabeth from the BBC’s Keeping up Appearances crossed every one’s mind!) Fortunately for the lucky 32 participants in this Magical Christmas Treat we were transported home by coach so we could even enjoy the carefully selected cava and wine that Gonzalo provided in copious amounts.

What style do you prefer to decorate your dining room The dining room, at least in the Mediterranean culture is not just the place where people eat and enjoy their food, but the place where family and friends gather for social occasions, always around a big table. The dining room is the focal point and the meeting point, a place where the ambiance created is vital. The impression people get from your room will depend very much on the style of decoration that you decide upon. If you are still making your mind up, let's give you some ideas. 1. Classic
4 always with some concession to details that go beyond the norm: an abstract painting presiding over the table, metallic details and original lamps.
3
3. Minimalist
The classic style is the most traditional style that goes with your home. In a dining room with these characteristics you can never miss a crystal-clear lamp, possibly spider and a large wooden table. The chairs can be of baroque inspiration or with a more elegant touch if they are made out of fabric.
If what you are looking for is a formal and clinical environment, choose minimalist decoration. It does not give out a feeling of warmth but it is comfortable and gives a sense of space. This detail will make any guest feel comfortable. For a minimalist dining room, discard any hint of wood. Metal, glass or even plastic is always welcome.
2. Modern
4. Scandinavian
The modern is now already a classic style. It is serious and elegant, but
Scandinavian decor always gives out a feeling of total warmth. Soft woods, pastel tones and a unique design is used so that it will give beauty

6 and practicality to any home.
7. Functional
5. Colonial
In many cases our houses are small and we do not have room for large dining areas. If this is the case, you can always use creativity with more functional design. For example, the dining room could be inside the kitchen (kitchen/diner) and that space can be very cleverly designed to accomodate both functions. Many people these days are also opting for a more open plan approach where kitchen/dining and the living area is all together but with areas defined by the furniture/ fittings that are put into the space, rather than by solid walls.
If you want an exotic and adventurous touch, the colonial style would be the most appropriate. To create such an environment, one must only draw inspiration from the great classics of cinema: Memories of Africa or The English Patient. In titles like these we see things like dark wood, camel tones - and lots of tropical plants.
6. Rustic If you choose to decorate your dining room with plenty of country style with hard wood furniture and perhaps a piece of antique furniture passed down through the family, this will be a perfect space for large family gatherings.

You may develop new attributes, adding them to your operating style by giving form and method to latent abilities. It may be a time where you will break from the confines of what you’re in to seek a dream far away. Some of you may know a measure of retreat from your usual existence. Healthcare will play an important part during this time.
Taurus ( 20 April – 20 May )
You may come up against unexpected expenses with regard to interest charges or credit costs. Past dealings or obligations of a financial nature may come up for consideration again. Work patiently around both the obstacles and the people that block your path. There will be changes in family structure and some members may find themselves facing difficult conditions. The health of family members may be a testing issue.
Libra ( 23 September – 22 October )
There may be a refining process for the hopes and dreams you’re pursuing. Make sure your goals are practical and achievable, and your work methods are straightforward and discerning. The reward will be that you discover new potentials, skills and experiences that reveal different sides of you. Domestic harmony prevails and you may share new knowledge or beliefs with a partner. Work hard to ensure that everyone understands one another.
Scorpio ( 23 October – 21 November )
There may be new horizons or new ventures. You may be on the verge of a big domestic or emotional shift, one that catapaults you into a new framework of living. There could be advancement. There certainly will be change and political or religious ideas may play some role in the process of change. You may be looking at your career direction with a view to making change. Your responsibilities or obligations could be difficult to manage. The advent of a new relationship could change the state of things - your life direction and perhaps even where you’re living. Whether single or committed, some may have to leave a lot behind in order to pursue something new. Money matters will need review, especially where joint finances or credit arrangements are involved. Put off major decisions, the waves of change and stability will come. If single, you may find yourselves suddenly or unexpectedly in the midst of a new experience in the partnership stakes. You may be pulled between commitments at home and at work and have to find a better balance. Money may come freely, but go freely as well if you’re unrealistic or give way to speculation. Put what you earn into something secure, especially property. You may determine on a course of pleasure and excitement in your romantic life. Make sure you don’t pay too high a price for the thrills if you choose that path. If you seek the highest ideal of love, you’ll find fulfilment.
Virgo ( 23 August – 22 September )
You may need to study or withdraw from more familiar landmarks or reference points to make the transition. A cycle of interaction may come to a close. Fellowship of The King Film & Tapas Evening The present season of 'Film & Tapas Evenings' continues at FTK’s Nerja premises in Pasaje San Miguel (near the main Mercadona) on Friday13th January at 7.30 pm with the film 'Old Fashioned'. This is a gentle, romantic movie, filmed against a backdrop of beautiful scenery that really adds to the film’s tender, rustic feel. It tells of a former student, Clay, living in a small town in Ohio where he works in an antique shop restoring “old-fashioned” odds and ends. He has also decided to turn the clock back with his own lifestyle, a total change from his wild student days; even going as far as choosing that “old fashioned” should apply to his lovelife too and so he embarks on a quest to engage in a traditional courtship, one in which he pledges not to be alone in a room with a woman who is not his wife. As the film unfolds, however, we learn that he is still struggling with guilt over his former life-style of sowing wild oats and finds himself in a battle to keep his high standards. The female lead, Amber, is a fun-loving drifter who goes wherever the wind takes her but who has been hurt in past relationships. She turns up in Ohio and rents the small apartment above the building where Clay restores furniture. She is mystified by Clay’s gentlemanly behaviour, sincerity and high ideals, although she does think him a “little odd.” This obviously cannot be your
average boy meets girl story, nevertheless, slowly and sweetly, though often painfully, the two fall in love with one another. Clay ultimately sheds his legalistic mindset toward romantic love but still manages to maintain his high standards of respect towards women. Do join us for this charming and life-affirming film to start the New Year. For more information call 958 658 439 or email fotk.spain@gmail.com

5 Classic Winter Movies Darkest January what better time to curl up on the sofa and watch a classic winter movie...? COOL RUNNINGS (1993) Derice Bannock (Leon Robinson), a top 100m runner, fails to qualify at the Olympic Trial for the 1988 Summer Olympics. To realise his dream of competing in the Olympics, he and his best friend, Sanka Coffie (Doug. E Doug), a champion push cart racer, seek out Irv Blitzer (John Candy), an American bobsled two time Gold Medalist at the 1968 Winter Olympics who finished first in two events again during the 1972 Winter Olympics but was disqualified from the latter for cheating and retired in disgrace to Jamaica, where he leads an impoverished life as a bookie. Derice's persistence eventually convinces Irving to be their coach, and the fun and games begin...
On Her Majesty’s Secret Service (1969) The wintriest Bond movie of all, taking place high in the Swiss Alps, where Bond’s nemesis Blofeld (Telly Savalas) is running
S u d o k U
an allergy research clinic, brainwashing his nubile ‘Angels of Death’ to go out into the world distributing lethal bacteria. Bond is played by George Lazenby and it’s in this movie that the secret agent meets his only wife, the tragic and beautiful Contessa Teresa di Vicenzo (Diana Rigg).
The Shining (1980) Would-be novelist Jack Torrance (Jack Nicholson) is interviewed for a caretaker position at a lodge high in the Rockies. Closed during the winter months when heavy snowfall make it all but unreachable, The Overlook is the perfect place for Torrance to while away the season in seclusion with his wife (Shelley Duvall) and their troubled son Danny (Danny Lloyd) as he finally starts that novel. But the Overlook doesn’t turn out to be the ideal writer’s retreat Torrance hoped for: something about the vast, eerie emptiness of the hotel and his family’s snowbound
isolation seems to set the wheels of madness in motion.
PLANES, TRAINS AND AUTOMOBILES (1987) Neal Page (Steve Martin) is an advertising executive on a business trip in New York City trying to return to his family in Chicago for Thanksgiving. Del Griffith (John Candy), is a traveling salesman who sells shower curtain rings. The unlikely pair join forces and resort to various means to try and reach Chicago in time for Thanksgiving.
HAPPY FEET (2006) Every emperor penguin sings a unique song called a "heartsong" to attract a mate. If the male penguin's heartsong matches the female's song, the two penguins mate. Mumble (voice of Elijah Wood), is unable to sing but can tap dance. Nevertheless, he is enamoured with Gloria (Brittany Murphy), a female penguin who is regarded as the most talented of her age.

The science and controversy of supplementing for cancer More than 80 percent of adults with cancer take at least one dietary supplement or use one or more as a complementary therapy. They include fish oil or omega-3 fatty acids, antioxidants, vitamins and minerals. Still, many physicians warn against supplementing during cancer treatment. What are the dangers, and what is the safest practice? Oncology patients are at increased risk for weight and lean body mass losses, as well as nutrient deficiencies and not eating enough as a side effect of some therapies such as radiation, chemotherapy and surgery. Because nutritional status influences disease prognosis, tolerance of treatment and quality of life for those diagnosed with cancer, nutrition intervention should be the health professional's primary focus. If food interventions have proven inadequate, dietary supplements may be required. Emerging research suggests some compounds in dietary supplements may help manage side effects of cancer treatment, helping to reduce discomfort caused by certain chemotherapy drugs and radiation. The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics' Evidence Analysis Library has found using supplements containing fish oil resulted in weight gain or stabilization in adult oncology patients who experienced weight loss because of treatment, although more research is needed to determine the optimal dose. The omega-3 fatty acids eicosapentaenoic acid, EPA, and docosahexaenoic acid, DHA, 40 THE MARKET PLACE
provide anti-inflammatory effects that may help limit the neurotoxic effects of some chemotherapy drugs. However, caution is advised when taking omega-3 fatty acid supplements because side effects are possible, including an increase in bleeding and drug interactions. Multivitamin and multimineral supplements that provide 100 percent of the Daily Value for nutrients can be considered safe for healthy individuals, but a person undergoing cancer treatment should be assessed by a physician or registered dietitian nutritionist to determine if this type of supplementation is needed based on symptoms and the amount of calories taken in from food. Certain minerals have been shown to reduce side effects of cancer treatment; strontium has been used to relieve bone pain associated with prostate and breast cancers. Some research on antioxidant supplements has shown benefits, including reduced side effects, but many physicians fear these supplements may reduce the effectiveness of cancer treatment therapy. Study results remain mixed due to the variability in supplement dose, intake and treatment type. Curcumin (present in turmeric) has been shown to inhibit enzymes that stimulate inflammation; preliminary research suggests taking a dietary supplement containing turmeric extract may stabilize disease progression in some patients with treatment refractory colorectal cancer. However, curcumin can cause blood thinning, so caution should be used. Glutamine powder, a conditionally essential amino acid, is another supplement that may help lessen cancer treatment side effects, such as mouth sores and diarrhea. Research shows it appears safe in doses up to 40 grams per day and appears to decrease the incidence, severity and duration of mouth pain in some patients undergoing chemotherapy or bone marrow transplant. Many supplement interventions have not been studied in oncology patients, so additional research on safety and efficacy is critical. Research will likely continue to emerge on dietary supplements to help maximize the therapeutic effect while reducing toxicity of chemotherapy drugs. Patients undergoing cancer treatment often take multiple drugs, which increases their risk of potential interactions. For safety, it's important to disclose all supplements to health care providers and not begin taking new supplements without clearance from an oncologist. In addition, use caution and avoid products that claim to be miracle cures, breakthroughs or new discoveries, as well as those that claim to have benefits but no side effects, or are based on a secret ingredient or method.

Local animal charities TAIL (Torrox Animal International League)
New CAS Shop is open!
As you read this most of the festive Christmas and New Year celebrations will be over only excepting Three Kings. We hope you all enjoyed yourselves. At Tail we had a dinner dance with cabaret at El Pino in Torrox Park arranged by Andy & Jacky Mann, very well attended and how some danced; then Gill and Dave Armstead put on an evening at their cortijo for the volunteer workers at the Refuge, what a reward for all their efforts; then Tail put on our annual party at Lew’s Restaurant for all the volunteers that help in the two shops and also those who do so much to keep the ship afloat. All this was followed the next night by an evening of entertainment and oriental food at the Hong Kong Restaurant arranged by two of our sponsors, Veterinary Dr Doolittle and Animal Express.
The new shop has been successfully trading since December 5 and CAS will be hosting a grand opening party on Monday, January 9. Stop by for a drink and a biscuit while you browse at what is on offer.
Caramela a puppy who was handed into us found wandering in Torrox Park
It has also been an extremely satisfying period for adoptions, we don’t keep such detailed records readily available but all at Tail are of the opinion that we have never had such numbers of rescued dogs being placed in new homes ever before, and that does not include fostering, which though important is not a final result.
The Costa Animal Society (CAS) is very pleased to announce the opening of its new, much larger fund-raising shop in Nerja. Second hand clothing and bric-a-brac can be found on sale, raising much-needed cash for the charity.
The shop is at calle Castilla Perez, 2, next door to the Good Stuff Café, and very close to the Supersol supermarket. It will be open Monday to Saturday from 10.00an to 2.00pm, but closed on Sundays and holidays.
CAS fund raising news CAS Ball raises over E2k The Costa Animal Society’s 30th Anniversary Winter Ball during December was a smashing success with almost 70 guests in attendance and over E2,200 raised to help the animals in need. The efforts of the volunteers who organised the event were rewarded with lots of positive feedback. The entertainment provided by the Mark T. Connor Band was a hit with the crowd as they played favourites from the 60s, 70s and 80s, complete with costume changes.
So if you feel that you would wish to start the New Year doing something satisfying and worthwhile, you will be most welcome at Tail in any area you choose to help, and you would be joining a multinational group of all ages who have fun and feel contentment with what they achieve. Don’t be on the sidelines, get stuck in!!
C.A.S. (Costa Animal Society) Happy New Year from CAS As the Costa Animal Society (CAS) begins 2017 and its 31st year as a registered charity, we cannot express enough gratitude towards our volunteers and supporters throughout the year. From the people who give their time in the CAS shop and at various markets to those who provide donations and financial support, we could not carry on the work we do without your assistance. Last year local business such as Dentadanes, Stephen’s Restaurant and Bar 19 were financial sponsors through regular donations and creative ways of raising funds such as the Bar 19 five litre Jameson’s raffle, with the proceeds given to CAS. CAS, and the stray and abandoned animals helped by its volunteers, look forward to your continued support this year.
Harper family win top raffle prize
CAS would like to thank all of the local businesses and individuals who sponsored the ball and provided raffle prizes, which were a vital part of this fundraising effort. The grand prize was a Fortnum and Mason luxury Christmas hamper won by the Harper family who have adopted several rescues over the years. It was a wonderful start to everyone’s Christmas season.
CAS Quiz Night The Punta Lara Bar is proud to host a charity quiz in aid of the Costa Animal Society (CAS) on January 20 at 7.30 for 8.00pm. Quiz Mistress Laura will be whipping the punters into shape with a few brain teaser questions to mark the New Year. The E3 entrance fee and all raffle proceeds go directly towards helping CAS help animals in need. Food and drink are available at the bar, and advance booking is essential by calling Mark at 635 369 673.
Sunday Market Volunteers who run the Costa Animal Society (CAS) stall at Nerja’s Sunday car are there every week with good quality bric-a-brac and clothing at bargain prices on offer. Blood test could predict if you will die in next 5 years Scientists have discovered a key marker in the blood of middle-aged adults that can detect the building blocks of cancer, chronic heart disease and other serious health conditions. The new compound, known as IL-6 is more accurate in assessing the risk of mortality than the previously used test. Lead author Professor Archana SinghManoux, from University College London, said: “Omics technologies are exciting, as they allow the concurrent assessment of many biomarkers, which may turn out to be important to detect preclinical states of diseases or be markers of future disease.” The study, published in the Canadian Medical Association Journal, included data collected between 1997 and 1999 on 6,545 men and women aged 45 to 69 years. Participants were followed to

Professor Singh-Manoux added: “We looked at markers of inflammation such as interleukin-6 (IL-6), C-reactive protein (CRP) and a1-acid glycoprotein (AGP). “The latter was found in a recent metabolomics study to be a strong predictor of death within five years. “When a recent metabolomics study highlighted the importance of AGP, our question was how relevant is this marker when compared to other known inflammatory markers. The novelty of our approach lies in being able to assess risk of mortality in the short - and longterm.“ “Our findings show IL-6, which is already known to be important to heart disease, to do better than AGP. Research on biomarkers is progressing fast, and it is important to undertake checks like in the

Physium Treatment Rutger Diergaarde of Fisioterapia Holandesa has found another way to help his patients with their recovery process. He has invested in a device called Physium, which produces a mechanotherapeutic stimuli, like a manual massage therapy, through a pulsating vacuum system action with applicators applied on the skin. Physium treats miofascial conditions: e.g. The deep mechanical action works on the miofascial and neuronal tissues.
Patients with chronic low back pain who were not responding to previous physical treatments, or patients with Fibromyalgia can benefit from this treatment. A better known testimonial includes that of professional rider on the Moto GP circuit, Dani Pedrosa, who explains how the Physium System helped with his post-surgical recovery. After various
surgeries on his right arm, Dani was left with scar tissue which affected the flexibility of his arm. The Physium treatment helped Dani to regain more flexibility, enabled the lymphatic system to drain properly and reduced pain by alleviating pressure on the nerves caused by the extensive scarring inside the muscle. Without this treatment, Dani would have had to abandon his career in motor sport.
PHYSIUM expands the benefits of manual therapy by:
Relaxing stiffness
Flexibilising fibrotic scars
Freeing tissue adhesions
Stimulating venous and lymphatic circulation
Improving anxiety and depression

Student interviews local artist Interview by Carlos Garrido Wassink, student at I.E.S Sierra Almijara, Nerja
After a long Spanish History class, it was the time to meet a renowned local artist. I was tired because I had been having classes for five hours, but when I remembered Renate Van Nijen was going to come, I recovered my spirit. I’m Carlos Garrido Wassink and I’m studying 2º of Bachillerato at Sierra Almijara high school in Nerja. I had written some questions on a piece of paper about her life and ‘Secret Thoughts’, a collection of 24 sensual stories that most of the students of my class had read. We were all now in the English class, and I was prepared to ask her questions. Q: Where do you come from? Renate: I was born in the Netherlands. Q: What do you do? R: I’m an artist. I normally paint, write, make clay figures and mandalas. Q: Do you prefer prose or poetry? R: I prefer much more prose, because I consider poetry harder to create. Q: Who’s your favourite writer? R: It’s Deepak Chopra. He’s a spiritual writer that I’m really interested in. Q: When did you come to Spain? R: I’ve been in Spain since 2003. Q: Where do you live now? R: I live in La Herradura, a village close to Nerja, in the south of Spain. For me, La Herradura is a good place to live because there are many artists to speak with.
Q: Do you prefer writing or painting? R: It depends. For a period of time I preferred writing because I could have more ideas to write, but there are other times when I have more inspiration and I prefer painting. It also depends on my mood. Q: How often do you write? R: I usually write everyday.
Q: What are you hobbies? R: I love travelling. I’ve visited many places like Israel, New Zealand, Italy and of course, Spain. I have learnt different techniques and acquired new experiences in those countries.
Q: Which technique do you prefer using in your paintings? R: I know hundreds and hundreds of techniques, but I prefer using abstracts, with oils and acrylics.
Q: Why did you decide to be an artist? R: Well, as a child, I spent a good part of my time drawing. When I got older, I decided to study Arts, but I finally couldn’t. Anyway, it wasn’t an obstacle to me and I didn’t stop working on what I enjoy doing.
Q: We can find a red moon in many of your paintings. What do they mean? R: They represent the goddess Isis, symbol of the feminine creativity.
Q: Have you ever had another job? R: Yes, I had. I worked as an English teacher, translator and a journalist, but I preferred doing arts.
Q: Do you have any paintings exhibited? R: I have had some of my creations exhibited internationally for 25 years in cities like New York, Amsterdam, Paris, Rome, etc.
Q: How did you get inspired for writing “Secret Thoughts”? R: When I was a journalist fifteen years ago, I interviewed people that inspired me with their ideas to write a book that recollects the thoughts and feelings that anyone could have at a special or a normal moment of their lives. Q: Do you write your books initially in English or in Dutch? R: Personally, it’s simpler to write my books at first in English.

Nerja
was once a sleepy fishing village but now the town has a population of over 21,000. The Balcón de Europa is a magnificent promenade that was made famous by King Alfonso XII , who’s statue now takes pride of place at the far end. Close by is the 17th century Church of El Salvador, and the beautiful gardens of Capistrano Playa. The town boasts an active Centro de Cultura, and a new attraction is The Fuente de Europa in Verano Azul Park, which is a very impressive monument, made from pieces of stone donated from EU member states. There are many beaches to be found either side and in front of the town, including Burriana with its numerous cafés and restaurants. Here too, you can take advantage of the water sports on offer, including water skiing, scuba diving and sailing. Just outside Nerja on the coast road towards Maro is a very impressive aquaduct which used to supply the local sugar factory, but is now used to carry water to local farms.

Torre del Mar
is just 30 minutes from Malaga, and is the beach resort of Velez Málaga. Its population of 21,000 grows between June and September to 150,000. The towns attractions have expanded over the last few years to cope with the demand, and now the four kilometres of beach have been enhanced by an impressive promenade, which stretches all the way to Caleta de Vélez, a port providing over 200 berths and offering sailing and water sports. Throughout the summer, there are many Chiringuitos on the beach, serving fresh barbequed fish and ice cold beers. In 2002, Paseo de Larios was pedestrianized, and is now a tranquil promenade, with plenty of pavement cafés and restaurants. At the seafront end of Larios is a line of bars and discos which continue throughout the night on Fridays and Saturdays. The history of Torre is uncertain, but it is thought that it might have been part of an ancient Greek settlement, known as Mainake, which was destroyed by the Carthaginians. Tombs of the Carthaginians were found at the mouth of the river Velez. More recently, it was a small fishing village until major development began in the 1970’s.

Frigiliana
encompass 39.74 sq km within which live just over 3,000 people year round. Frigiliana is a popular tourist destination, and because there are many holiday homes here, the population triples during the summer months. The history of Frigiliana dates from prehistoric times. The village has been inhabited by numerous civilisations from the Phoenicians and Romans to the Arabs, who had the greatest impact on the town’s development. During the Christian reconquest, Frigiliana was the site of numerous battles culminating in the famous battle of the Rock of Frigiliana in 1569 which ended in the complete expulsion of the Moorish people. One can learn the history of this struggle by walking through the streets of the historic section where there are a series of twelve ceramic plaques posted about which explain the entire story.

La Herradura
nestles between the Punta de la Mona to the east and the rock of Cerro Gordo to the west. The bay enjoys shelter from west winds creating mostly crystal-clear waters, and is a popular location for water sports & paragliding. There are numerous beach bars and restaurants serving specialities of the region, including tropical salads, fresh fish or paella. The Marina del Este near La Herradura is tucked betwen Punta de la Mona to the west and Cotobro to the east. It boasts a beautiful port, elegantly designed to incorporate select shops, art galleries, bars and restaurants. This small strip of coast also claims to be the best place to dive between Almeria and Gibraltar, and is home to one of the areas leading diving schools.
