Local News Local News Local News Nerja Tourist Office reports increase in visitors Nerja continues to be the visitors destination of choice in the Malaga region. According to data from the Tourist Office, 7,077 visited the facility during April 2017, compared to 4,082 in the same period last year - an increase of around 3,000 visitors. The most popular day was Lunes Santo, April 10th, with 486 visits and the lowest was Saturday April 22nd, with 95 visitors, with an average of 236 visits per day. As for the nationalities, the Spaniards stand out with 29% of the total and the British with almost 23%. There was an increase in Swedish tourists, matching figures of other more established nationalities in Nerja, such as the Germans and French - the three nationalities combined account for around 7.5% of visits. The breakdown of Spanish visitors is as follows: Andalusia 22%, Madrid, 19%, Catalonia and the Basque Country 10%. The celebration of Semana Santa (Holy Week) generated a lot of questions from tourists with regards to this celebration both in our town and in surrounding areas. Other celebrations such as the Día del Folklore also generated much interest. In addition, the good weather that we enjoyed during the month encouraged many questions about the state of the sea, beaches, water temperatures, waves, etc... as well as outdoor and water activities.

Zero alcohol rule for new and professional drivers Spain's traffic authorities are considering reducing the alcohol limit to zero for new and young drivers and those who drive professionally, including road-haulage and taxi drivers. Head of the General Directorate of Traffic (DGT) Gregorio Serrano says the move will 'remove potential killers from Spain's roads' and recalls that in some countries, the zero rule already applies. Already in Spain the alcohol limit is one of the lowest in Europe – less than a small glass of wine on a full stomach for a woman of average build – but even after the recent deaths of three cyclists in Oliva (Valencia province) hit national news, reports have continued to flood in of drivers caught between three and six times over the limit. This said, none of those caught so far and reported on are young or new drivers, or professionals – in fact, the woman who killed three members of Jávea (Alicante province) triathlon team in Oliva is aged 28. At present, the alcohol limit of 0.25 milligrams per litre of breath – barely a 6 THE MARKET PLACE

small glass of wine – is reduced by 40% for new and professional drivers, to 0.15.

The 25th Torre Del Mar Triathlon generated an economic impact of 1m euros

The Councillor for Sports of Velez Malaga, Maria Jose Roberto, highlighted the jump in participants for the triathlon in just 2 years; in 2014 there were just 250 taking part but this year a total of 774 triathletes completed in the event. This spectacular increase shows what a great sporting event the Torre del Mar - Costa del Sol Triathlon is and has generated close to a million euros for the town. 5,000 people gathered for the event which was hosted on the 2nd May, enjoying a great sporting spectacle in a priveleged and unbeatable location.

Organic agriculture course held in Velez Malaga 50 students attended an organic agricultural course held at the Centre for Studies and La Pola Farm. The ABC of Organic Agriculture gave the students all the necessary tools to guarantee the regeneration of the soil and that this will allow for better harvests and a greater yield. Jairo Restrepo who taught the course is a professional in the agriculture sector and has given seminars and courses in different parts of the world. The course was very beneficial to the attendees in order to adapt to a new concept of agriculture where the food produced will be richer in minerals. The course provided examples, processes and experiences to change from plots that have traditional crops to organic farming.

The new car park, which has five entrance lanes and seven exits, designed to reduce congestion lets drivers have 15 minutes of free parking. If this is exceeded drivers must pay a fee to exit, but on the first day the airport staff had to leave the barrier open due to hundreds of cars being gridlocked. Car rental firms also believe they should be allowed there own specific area rather than having to share with private vehicles. The airport has recently announced the greatest growth amonst Spanish airports this year, with 4.67 million passengers using the facilities over the first 4 months of the year (a 15% increase on 2016).

Crashed plane victims identified as German expats

The 3 occupants of a light aircraft which crashed near the village of Canillas de Aceituno, killing everyone have been identified as German expats, say the Guardia Civil mountain rescue team. Air traffic control contacted emergency services after losing contact with the plane whilst it was crossing a mountainous rural area near Canillas de Aceituno. The aeroplane had taken off from Mutxamel in the Southern part of Alicante and they were heading for the Granada area but had veered off course. Although it is thought the aircraft crashed at around the time contact was lost, the accident was not confirmed until about 20.00. Rescuers were sent out in a helicopter, and confirmed on Sunday morning that the pilot and both passengers had been killed outright. They were formally identified and said to be German nationals believed to have been living on the Costa Blanca.

Attack on church in Velez

A firebomb attack was made on the Virgin de los Desamparados church in Velez Malaga which has left investigators clueless as to the motive Malaga's new airport System for the attack. The home made bomb Fails to Impress failed to explode, although the petrol used damaged some areas of the The new pickup and dropoff system at church. A priest who was there at the Malaga airport has received bad press after it came into operation on 16th May. time spotted a young lad running away Car rental companies are in uproar after but he was not able to confirm if he was responsible for the attack. airport bosses turned their collection area into a public car park with 300 spaces in front of the terminal buildings.

So who was Maria Zambrano ? Whilst living in Andalucia I often come across famous Spanish people from the past who are clearly celebrated in the region and I wonder who they were and what they did.

N

ot having had a Spanish education, often these influential interlects are not familiar to me, and one name that constantly keeps popping up is "Maria Zambrano". The big park in Velez Malaga where I take my son is called "Parque de Maria Zambrano", the railway station in Malaga was named "Maria Zambrano", the secondary school in Torre del Mar is named after this famous lady and also a health club, library and a clothing shop. So it seems she is a lady that Spaniards are proud of and wish to remember and celebrate. I also discovered a Foundation dedicated to Maria Zambrano at the Palacio Benial, which is situated in the historical centre of Velez Malaga. As it turns out, Maria was born in Velez Malaga, so it is no wonder there are numerous tributes in the town. Born in 1904, she moved from Velez and spent much of her early life in Segovia where her father was a teacher and a good friend of another influencial thinker, Antonio Machado. She attended University in Madrid and went to classes of Ortega and Morente. She is credited as being the most important female thinker and philosopher of the 20th century in Spain. During the 20's and 30's she campaigned for the establishment of a Spanish Republic but ended up going into exile because of the war in Spain in

1936. After living in France, Cuba, Puerto Rico, Italy and Switzerland she eventually returned to a post Franco Spain in 1984, before she died in 1991. Maria Zambrano was famous for her essays and writings and these are now kept at the Palacio Benial in Velez Malaga, where many researchers come to study her work and get to know her better. Her work, for example talked about "poetic reasoning" to explore new worlds like the poetic world in "Philosophy and Poetry" (1939) and the one in "Man and Divinity" one of her most important literary works (1953) in which she merges philosophy and poetry, in order to reflect man and his relationship with divinity. Her work was very slow to be recognised in Spain but it began in 1966 with the publication of "Los Suenos de Maria Zambrano" in the important cultural and scientific magazine "Revista Occidente". In 1981 she was awarded the "Prince of Asturias Award for Communications and Humanities" and in 1983 Malaga

Workshop attended by a hundred students at the Palacio Beniel who did activities about the life and work of Maria Zambrano last year. University named her "Doctor Honoris Causa". In 1988 she became the 1st woman to be awarded the "Miguel de Cervantes Prize". It was not until her later years that the Foundation of her work was established in Velez Malaga. The Town Hall of Velez provided her with a small pension so that she could spend her final days in Spain continuing her work, in return for the right to begin the Foundation and celebrate and continue her cultural heritage. The Foundation was created in 1987 and the main purpose was the disesemination and preservation of her thought and work, for which many interesting activities would be organised. Without the Foundation we would have a different image of Maria Zambrano today.

Palacio Beniel in Velez Malaga home of the Foundation of Maria Zambrano 12 THE MARKET PLACE

Before the foundation was established Maria Zambrano lived in poverty with no income except for a humble pension from a Venezuelan University. After the foundation helped her with a monthly pension it allowed her to devote herself to her research and publications. This was one of the most productive periods of her life. The Foundation continues to organise various cultural activities like seminars, exhibitions, essay awards, scholarships and conferences today.

bacon, freud and the london school Until 17th September at the Picasso Museum in Malaga The temporary exhibition “Bacon, Freud and the London School” shows the joint work of the first class painters who worked with a common denominator: the representation of the human figure. Their works were painted between the second world war and the end of the twentieth century, mainly in London. Through the representation of the human figure in an everyday environment, these artists convey the fragility and vitality of human beings, developing new approaches and styles to translate the meaning of life into art. This exhibition has been organized by the Tate Modern in collaboration with the Picasso Museum in Malaga.

Long term rental or tourist rental? Thinking about renting your property out for the summer or as a long term rental? Both options have their benefits and pitfalls... Is tourist rental more profitable?

periods of time.

Tourist renting is becoming a key factor in the real estate sector. According to a recent report the Tourist rental market in Spain is on the rise, 81% of owners who rent property for tourism consider that it is more beneficial than long term rentals. The growing demand is making this market a very attractive option. Madrid, Barcelona and Seville lead the way in terms of growth; the coastal areas of course have always been popular for this type of rental.

What poperty do people rent?

Do holiday rentals pay more? 74% of owners who put their rental through internet portals claim they get more income at the end of the month. The main reason, according to respondents is the high profitability that it offers, followed closely by the speed at which the property is rented and the growing demand within the market. Homeowners see greater possibilities of income in holiday rentals than in residential homes, mainly because of high turnover of renters and the disbursement they make for short

The surveys are clear, 66% of renters estimate that they get between 5% and 15% more than renting out their property long term. 12% of renters affirm that tourist rentals get a 20% more benefit.

Why do some people prefer long term rentals? The data that was returned from some owners who prefered not to rent for short periods of time was rather interesting. Of those who discarded the tourist rental market last year 81% did so because because they said long term rentals required less time and dedication. So the higher revenues from short term rental come at a price and higher turnover of clients requires a lot of dedication in time and effort, especially if you manage this personally and do not use a professional.

Of the people that responded to the survey, only 14% offered the dwelling in which they normally live, 50% said that they used a second residence for tourist rental and 18% claim to use tourist rental for flats or houses they already owned. The remainder used a house Others felt that long term rentals were which they bought as an investment or a safer and another 22% said they did house that they inherited. not want to cause problems with their So the vast majority of the tourist neighbours from short term rentals. Guardia Civil visit the Phoenix Club in Torre Del Mar.

1

On Monday the 24th April, The Phoenix Club in Torre Del Mar welcomed Periana based Officer Juan Tejada from The Guardia Civil to the club who gave a large audience a very informative talk on the history of The Guardia Civil, Crime Prevention, Animal Cruelty, Traffic matters and a question and answer session in which members were able to raise concerns.

One of his major topics was the new App which is available through the Apple app store or Google play called Alertcops. This multi-language app allows you to report incidents and crimes direct to the Police. The added advantage of the app is it locates your GPS position so the control room can direct a mobile unit directly to your location or home. This is particularly useful if the person is new to the area and does not know their location, or if you were reporting a theft or burglary from your home which may be in the campo area.

language to access to the security emergency services.

The following is a Government description on this new tool which is available through your mobile telephone.

How Does It Work?

What Is Alertcops? AlertCops is a citizen security alert system of the State Law Enforcement Authorities (FFCCSE in Spanish) The goal is to create a universal access to every public citizen security service, so any person, regardless their language, origin or auditory or vocal disability, can send to the State Law Enforcement Authorities (Police and Civil Guard) an alert about a crime or security incident whether they are victims or witnesses of such. Once the registration process is completed and the access validated by a code that will be sent via SMS to the mobile phone number provided, the application will show a home screen (pic 1) with the following options, which may be selected by clicking the corresponding icon: This service allows a citizen to send an alert from a mobile device 'smartphone' straight to the police bodies in a simple manner, so they can be assisted quickly and efficiently.

What Are The Benefits?

To offer a new communication channel •between citizens and the FFCCSE, in addition

improve the citizen response times and •theToinformation processs. To speed up the and •response demand information protocol, obtaining the

support seeker's information from the very beginning, such as: location, type of incident or any other relevant information. To guarantee the accessibility to these •services to people with communication disabilities.

Once the registration and validation process has been completed, the user will access the main menu (pic 1). You will have to provide your main details again when the app is uninstalled or if you change your mobile device.

What You See On Your Screen. You touch the screen on what type of incident you are reporting. A log is kept to inform you of any updates on the incident you have reported (pic 2) and the controller can message you directly to your phone. The GPS tracking system can locate your position (pic 3) to assist the patrolling officers to find your exact location. It was agreed by all those attending the talk that this application was an extremely useful tool for any of us who have the need to contact the Police here in Spain and it was something that should be spread across all foreign nationals who are living or visiting Spain. Just download the App to your mobile phone.

Shape up for the beach Want to make sure you’re looking bikini beautiful this summer? Try this yoga workout...

S

ummer’s here and many of us will be worried about baring our wobbly bits on the beach. If the gym isn’t really your thing, and you prefer a more holistic workout, yoga is the perfect way to tone and shape the body. The various postures help to strengthen and lengthen all of the major muscle groups resulting in long, lean muscles that any supermodel would be proud of. An added bonus is that as muscle mass increases the body naturally burns more calories, helping to streamline your figure. Yoga also helps to balance the body and mind and promotes a healthy sleep pattern. These positive changes will in turn help to lower stress. And by reducing stress, cravings for high calorie snacks will subside. A regular yoga practice will also speed up a sluggish digestive system, enhancing the elimination process. In addition to everything else that yoga provides, the yoga breathing techniques (pranayamas) will increase oxygen levels which will enhance all bodily functions, promote a sharp mind and give you a youthful glow.

Virabhadrasana 1 Use the power of the Warrior pose This posture will help tone and strengthen the torso, upper arms, bottom and outer thighs. It will also lengthen the inner thighs and gently massage the digestive organs. Stand with your feet leg-length apart. Imagine a clock face on the floor in front of you. The left foot is facing 12 o’clock and your right foot is facing two or three o’clock. Your hips and torso should face forward and your arms should be level with your shoulders. Work to soften the shoulders whilst maintaining a long neck. Bend your right knee and turn your torso 90 degrees to the right. Lift your arms up above your head. Draw up the lower abdominal muscles. Hold for 10 slow controlled breaths in and out through the nose and then repeat on the other side.

To intensify – Parivrtta Parsvakonasana (Revolving side angle)

From Warrior on the right side bring your hands to a prayer position in front of your chest and rotate the torso further to the right. Then lean forward and position the outside of the left elbow on the outside of the right thigh and look to the right elbow. Hold for 10 slow complete breaths and then repeat on the other side. 24 THE MARKET PLACE

Natarajasana (Dancer) This balance will help to tone and strengthen the legs. Begin by standing with a small space between the insides of your feet. Transfer your weight on to your left foot and lift the right foot by bending the knee and holding onto the foot. Draw the right heel in towards the bottom and then join the knees. Extend your left arm up towards the ceiling and draw up your lower stomach muscles. Hold this pose for 10 complete breaths and then repeat on the other side.

Jathara Parivartanasana (Lying Down Spinal Twist) This simple spinal twist will help to tone and shape your abdominal muscles. Begin by lying on your back with your knees bent and your feet on the floor. Your arms should be stretched out to the side, level with your shoulders and with the palms facing up. Inhale, and as you exhale allow the knees to fall to the right, whilst turning your head to the left. As you inhale, return to your starting position, and when you next exhale allow your knees to fall to the left whilst turning the head to the right. Continue like this for 10 complete breaths. To intensify – Lift the legs. To work a little deeper try doing this posture with the feet lifted so that you are creating a right angle with your thighs and lower legs.

Setu Bandasana (Half Bridge) This posture will help strengthen and tone the bottom and upper thighs whilst increasing spinal flexibility. Begin lying on your back with your knees bent and your feet firmly fixed on the floor. Breathe slowly in and out through your nose. When you feel ready lift your hips as high as you can. Remain in this position for 10 complete breaths, breathing slowly in and out through the nose, and repeat two more times. To intensify – Lift one leg continued on page 26

Why the guest experience matters! Let’s face it: Expectations are high for the precious few days or weeks off work. Relaxation, recreation and regeneration are high on the wish list and that includes a stress-free journey and very often a “home from home” in a warmer climate or exotic environment. As more and more people opt for holiday homes rather than hotels, they have come to expect exceptional and personalized service and smart hosts have embraced this challenge. The next level of hospitality Having rented out our cortijo over many years, we felt we had clinched it: a steady flow of bookings, happy guests and fabulous ratings surely were great indicators. However there was one aspect that we felt we could improve: the guestbook with printed instructions for the house, contact information and recommendations for restaurants and activities. We felt that to stay ahead and take hospitality to the next level we needed to provide our guests with a more interactive and cool tool: an interactive Guest & Travel Guide – and this is how the idea for HOSTISSIMO was born.

your hands and draw up your lower stomach muscles. This is downward facing dog. When you’re ready, inhale, move the shoulders forward and create a straight line between your shoulders and your heels. This is plank pose. As you exhale, return to downward facing dog. Repeat for 10 complete breath cycles. To intensify – Tri Pada Adho Mukha Svanasana (Three-legged dog) and Santolasana (Plank) To deepen the effects try lifting your right leg in downward facing dog and keep the leg lifted as you move forward to plank for five complete breaths. Then change and lift the left leg.

Savasana (The Corpse)

Guest expectations Guest do not need all the hassle and stress that comes with travel – all they want is to look forward to a relaxing holiday from the moment the booking confirmation hits their inbox. There are lots of questions before and during the holiday that can be answered well before and it can be done in a personalized way: an interactive Guest & Travel Guide provides information about the property, directions linked to google maps and allows guests to choose their own language. The owners of the holiday rental may not be on site, but they can still greet guests with a welcome video message and help them plan their stay with tips and recommendations for activities, restaurants and shopping, but also essential information about the area such as emergency contacts. Guests are having trouble with those remote controls for the TV & DVD? A brief video with instructions will sort it out.

Challenges for the host

Always finish your yoga practice with a short relaxation as this will ensure that you finish with a clear and focused mind. Lay on your back with your arms alongside your body and your palms facing up. Breathe slowly in and out through your nose for up to 10 minutes.

Whether owners are on site or have a local agent to do the meet & greet – the experience they provide needs to be as smooth and consistent as possible. And that starts with communication: A secure link to the Guest & Travel Guide - which expires after their departure - ensures that sensitive and practical information is not shared with the general public. This includes the exact location of the property, access and wifi password. A comprehensive guide with in-built translation facility will minimize guests’ need to call for help or information. Videos can be fun and useful, too: Why not create a video itinerary – not only does it take the stress out of guests’ arrival experience – it can be a tremendous appetizer to show them a clip of the wonderful property that they will soon relax in. So, be brave, ditch the guestbook and embrace the interactive Guest & Travel Guide! It replaces so much of the current email or text exchanges, offers guests up to date information and is super easy to set up! Martina Knappe, Airbnb host & founder of HOSTISSIMO.COM

Manish's Zodiac predictions - June Manish Kumar Arora, K.P. Astrologer, Numerologist, Tarot Card Reader & Vastu Consultant Facebook: manishastroconsultant email: manish@manishastrologer.com Aries ( 21 March – 19 April )

This month, you get a big taste of positive energy. It is particularly strong for useful advice and the power of teaming up and combining your talents with someone. You might find yourself drawn to push the usual boundaries, which can be profound in healthy ways but could lead you down the wrong path if you’re not mindful of your limits.

Taurus ( 20 April – 20 May )

This is a good time for reaching out to others, sharing ideas, writing, and scoping out various prospects and ideas. Your ideas or work may gain some recognition now. Putting your feelers out makes a lot of sense this month. There could also be a major revelation about your finances, a love relationship, or friendship. You’re likely to feel more in your element on a romantic level.

Gemini ( 21 May – 20 June)

The biggest area of passion and possible upheaval this month is likely to involve your private world, family life, and home matters. You’re ambitious about these things now, desiring to make deep changes that will last. Someone who’s in the position to help further your goals, promote you, or help you find a direction can take special interest in you. Express your faith in yourself now for best results.

Cancer ( 21 June – 22 July )

This is a great month for picking up new practical skills, finding new work, or throwing more of yourself into your current job. It’s also a fine time for improving your daily habits and health. Leo ( 23 July – 22 August )

It’s an inventive and creative time but you might also feel like a whirlwind. There can be a significant realization of responsibility, or a sense of joy in committing to someone or something. The last week of the month is particularly strong for ideas and plans surrounding work and health. You get along well with the people with whom you share your day.

Virgo ( 23 August – 22 September )

You might thoroughly enjoy the work you do or the services you provide. There can be increased respect for your work and efforts. Career matters fly along rather smoothly. Ambitions to improve your standing, security, and comfort levels are increasing. You might find that you achieve the most or are the most motivated through your involvement with a group or team. 28 THE MARKET PLACE

Libra ( 23 September – 22 October )

You may find yourself in the position to defend your values, possessions, or money. This energy might also translate in more positive terms – you could be working exceptionally hard at making your life better. This period can bring surprising, revealing, or startling feelings to the surface or events to your life. There could be a sudden decision to break out on your own, or into a new relationship.

Scorpio ( 23 October – 21 November )

This is a potentially active relationship month. You’re very focused on connecting on all sorts of levels and quite successful at it. You’re also quite willing to take care of others. Shared finances can become tricky to handle so do what you can to straighten out debt, as well as ownership and joint money matters in a logical way. This can be a passionate, revealing time.

Sagittarius ( 22 November -21 December )

You can be very contemplative this month. You’ll benefit greatly from actively seeking out ways to heal and de-stress. There can be a significant realization of responsibility, or a sense of joy in committing to someone or something. You might gain insight into an old issue, and this pushes you forward. New opportunities can emerge that turn your attention behind the scenes.

Capricorn ( 22 December – 19 January ) You’re in a period of reflection and preparation, so take things as slowly as you can. Sacrifices may need to be made when it comes to your relationships – you are required to be sympathetic and helpful now. Acknowledging and resolving problems with family or people you live with can be in focus. Look for the root of issues instead of seeking out cosmetic fixes.

Aquarius ( 20 January – 18 February )

Your competitive, enterprising nature comes to the fore, and you readily throw yourself into pursuing your goals. This can be a time of increased activity in your career, and you may also feel a strong desire to take the lead and act independently. Willingness to take emotional “risks” in the second half of the month can bring interesting experiences into your world.

Pisces ( 19 February – 20 March )

You are exuding much charm and positive energy that won’t go unnoticed. Communications of all kinds are emphasized, but especially those involving creative contacts, children, and romantic interests and they are generally favorable. You’re mentally wired, and you want to put ideas into action. You’re more conscientious as a result and take pride in solving problems, acquiring or honing skills, and taking care of business.

Health, Body & Soul Love your life more with advice on how to lead a healthy lifestyle

3 things that do not cause Autism

Are watered down drinks the answer to alcohol health issues?

Autism and what causes it seems to be very topical in the last few years. This may be largely sparked by the seeming increase in those diagnosed with the condition. In 2014, the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) released that the figures for children diagnosed with autism is 1 in 42 boys and 1 in 189 girls. There is much debate as to what may cause autism to develop in the first place and over the years there have been many culprits blamed. The most notable have now been discredited as the sole cause of autism as explained below.

Vaccines

New findings courtesy of Canadian researchers has suggested that, in order to combat alcohol-related health issues, companies should market drinks that have a lower alcohol content. This, according to the research published in the Lancelot Gastroenterology & Hepatology journal, could be a highly effective way to ensure alcohol-related issues in the future aren’t as bad as they are now. Statistics provided by the World Health Organization say that just under 3.3 million annual deaths are related to alcohol, and around a quarter of deaths among those aged 20-39 are linked with booze. “The idea is that a small reduction in alcohol – such as beer with four percent ethanol content versus six per cent – would reduce alcohol intake per drinker even if the same overall amount of beverage is consumed,” said the study’s head researcher, Jurgen Rehm, the director of the Institute for Mental Health Policy Research at the Center for Addiction and Mental Health in Toronto. Rehm also said that, according to him and his team’s findings, a lower level of alcohol content – in drinks like wine and beer, for example – will “not affect the taste.” “That means we should, for example, reduce the alcohol content of beer from an average of 5.5 per cent to an average of 4.5 per cent. That will not, according to all of the studies we know, have an impact on consumers; that they suddenly drink one bottle more of beer, because the consumers usually don’t even notice that. But it will have a tremendous impact on health,” says Rehm. 34 THE MARKET PLACE

Vaccines have been blamed for causing autism since the late 1990s based on poorly designed research (the researcher no longer has a medical licence). Further research since this time has been conducted which appears to indicate that vaccines are overall safe and that the benefits far outweigh the risks. There has also been concern that the adjuvant added to many vaccines, being thiomersal in the past and aluminium currently, may cause autism. Once again this has not been proven and currently cannot be linked to autism.

Certain Foods Although many parents report that placing their autistic child on a special

diet (such as gluten and casein-free) is helpful, this doesn't mean that their child's autism was caused by feeding them gluten or dairy. The same goes for other substances that may be found in certain foods such as preservatives, colours, flavours, or natural food chemicals such as salicylates or amines. Some of us are just more sensitive to these substances but that does not mean that they will cause autism but rather may suggest that autistic children are generally more intolerant to certain foods.

Maternal Anything Mothers carry a lot of guilt as it is, so adding to that guilt that mother’s may have caused their child to develop autism is frankly unfair and unfounded. There is no evidence to suggest that what a mother does or does not do during pregnancy has caused her child to develop autism. This extends to what she eats, how she behaves, or what she has been exposed to during her pregnancy. Obviously it is important to follow medical advice around what will lead to a healthy pregnancy but going to the extremes will not prevent or induce autism in your child.

So what does cause autism? The debate as to what does or does not cause autism is still very heated and unresolved. It is likely that no sole agent can be blamed but rather a combination of factors that are based on environmental influences impacting on certain genetic susceptibilities. Only time and research will reveal more in the future.

Can you guess the most Googled Superfood?

Putting aside that superfood is just one of those words, like moist, we love to hate, it’s also an easy way to lump healthy things to eat together. A new report into clean living trends has confirmed what we already know – our avocado insanity has peaked – in fact, it’s the superfood we love to search most. Yep, avocado searches are up 114% in the past three years. Other superfoods to see significant growth since 2014 are acai (+110%) and goji berries (+101%). As if you need convincing, this super nutritious food houses vitamin K, C, E, B5, B6, folate, fibre, zinc and magnesium. And as of last month, you can even get avocado chocolate, thanks to some California-based fancy chocolate genius who has created the ultimate hybrid.

What music means to me by Nicolás Álvarez Garcia, I.E.S Sierra Almijara, Nerja

Sometimes I have imagined how I became Thomas Anders (Modern Talking brown-haired guy) singing to the girl I dream of. On some occasions I have reflected on life by listening to Manolo García or Joaquín Sabina. Finally,I have to confess that I have felt how life can be poetry by listening to the unmistakable voice of Joan Manuel Serrat.

I think that music is one of the best pleasures we can enjoy throughout our lives. Music is a very important part of my short life so far. Thanks to it I can travel to other worlds without leaving my armchair. On the one hand, it makes me open my mind and dream of a better life. Honestly, I cannot complain about my life, I am just saying that music helps All in all, music constitutes an essential me to picture it as I would like it to be. part in my life and I think that it would be really hard for me to live without it. On the other hand, it makes me think As a lofty pleasure, we should enjoy about the bad times to forget them as it, we should taste it and we can even soon as possible. I have thought about dream of it, and if we are able,we should love on rainy days with the wavering try make our musical dreams come true. voice of Bonnie Tyler.

Understanding Weight Neutrality One does not need to go far to find harrowing statistics about obesity.

A

ccording to National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey data, obesity in adults more than doubled over half a century — from 13.4 percent in 1962 to 38.2 percent in 2014. With links between higher body mass index and increased risk for disease, including Type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease and certain cancers, public health messaging to the masses and patient advice from medical practitioners have centred on weight loss as both prevention and treatment for many chronic diseases. However, there isn’t a single therapy (dietary, surgical, pharmaceutical or otherwise) that has been shown to sustain long-term weightloss maintenance in a significant number of people. Researchers are only just beginning to understand the myriad factors that affect body weight and body fat, including genetics, hormones, medications, diseases, age, sleep, stress, environmental pollutants, sex, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, dietary quality and physical activity. And some epidemiological studies actually support conflicting theories on body weight and health. For example, the “Obesity Paradox” refers to the anomaly of some people with BMI's in the overweight and obese categories, especially older adults and even with chronic disease, outliving people with normal BMI's. “In general, there is a strong relationship between BMI and health outcomes,” says Hollie Raynor, PhD, RD, LDN, obesity researcher and co-author of a 2016 paper on interventions for the treatment of overweight and obesity in adults, “but there are individual differences.” Among limitations inherent to epidemiological research, according to Raynor, is that studies correlating body weight and morbidity and mortality may not control for moderating factors affecting disease risk, such as high intake of calorie-rich, low nutrient-dense foods, low intakes of nutrient-dense foods, physical inactivity and smoking. Other concepts — including “metabolically healthy obesity” (individuals with BMI's of 30 or higher who have normal blood lipids, blood sugar and insulin levels) and “metabolically obese normal weight” (people with normal BMI's and negative health outcomes) — are countered by a much higher proportion of people with obese BMI's who are not metabolically healthy. However, it is well recognized in behavioural health research that weight 44 THE MARKET PLACE

stigma (stereotyping and bias based on one’s size) is associated with increased calorie consumption and binge eating, negative body image, depression, greater likelihood of becoming obese, and reduced desire to engage in healthy behaviours. Other studies suggest that a focus on weight in health care settings may increase false positives and negatives. For instance, if physicians look for certain diseases in patients with overweight or obese BMIs but not in individuals with normal BMIs, some conditions may be overdiagnosed in larger people or underdiagnosed in smaller people. According to a 2014 review of unintended harm associated with public health interventions, weight loss messaging is not only ineffective, but actually can promote body dissatisfaction and disordered eating. Campaigns centered on healthy behaviours without mention of weight are better received and are more likely to result in healthy behaviours among targets, wrote the authors. Enter the “weight-neutral” movement: a therapeutic approach to improving the health of individuals by focusing less on BMI, and more on lifestyle behaviours. Some evidence suggests dietary restriction and a history of weight loss are associated with eating disorders. In addition, a key concern cited by weight-neutral proponents is that dietary restriction often leads to weight cycling — repeated gain and loss of weight — rather than sustained weight loss. Some research associates weight cycling with loss of lean body mass, reduced metabolic energy expenditure, increased inflammation, hypertension, insulin resistance, dyslipidemia, osteoporotic fracture, some types of cancer, cardiovascular risk, mortality risk and emotional distress. Other studies suggest weight cycling is more strongly linked with certain adverse health outcomes than is having an obese BMI. But many obesity researchers do not agree with these conclusions, citing studies that show losing even 3 percent to 5 percent of body weight reduces some health risks in people with elevated BMI's. “Lifestyle interventions that include dietary, physical activity and behaviour components typically do not lead to eating disorders,” says Raynor, adding that structured eating can even

help with bulimia nervosa and bingeeating disorder — although robust, multidisciplinary intervention programs designed by researchers may not be accessible for many people. On the other hand, there is limited research on the efficacy of weightneutral interventions; although some studies have found significantly better physiological, behavioural and psychological outcomes compared to weight-centric models and dieting, including low dropout rates and no adverse events, those study samples were small and did not include individuals classified as morbidly obese. Other criticisms include that a weightneutral approach gives people a “free pass” to engage in unhealthy lifestyle behaviours — and that weight loss should be pursued as soon as possible for people with obese BMI's. But weight neutrality is not in conflict with, and actually helps support, the Nutrition Care Process, according to Jennifer McGurk, RDN, CDN, CDE, CEDRD, who advocates for the inclusion of weight-neutral concepts in continuing professional education for registered dietitian nutritionists. “Many weight management trainings do not address binge-eating disorder,” says McGurk of a behaviour that is prevalent in up to 30 percent of people seeking weight loss treatment. “Behavioural health is a critical component of health care, yet many weight management approaches address food and diet only — without taking into consideration individuals’ genetic predispositions, preferences and feelings surrounding food.” While dietetics is grounded in compassion and individualized care, there is tremendous pressure as practitioners to focus on weight loss. Dietitian nutritionists need to self-assess and determine whether an intervention will truly improve a client’s health.

Healthy Chicken, Walnut, Blackberry, Spinach and Apple Salad Not only is this salad healthy, but it is also a great belly fat busting recipe. It’s full of fibre and protein, and a wonderful way to help your body burn that pesky lower belly fat that seems to be the hardest to get rid of. You can excercise until you are blue in the face, but most people don’t realize it is fruitless without the right diet. This is the recipe you will want to keep on hand!

INSTRUCTIONS In a large bowl combine the balsamic vinegar, cumin, corriander and whisk until well blended. Add the extra virgin olive oil in a slow and steady stream, whisking constantly, until creamy. Season with salt and pepper. Grill your chicken breast and add all ingredients in the salad in a large serving bowl and season with the salad dressing. Delicious!

Local animal charities TAIL (Torrox Animal International League)

C.A.S. (Costa Animal Society)

After two delayed attempts, firstly rain and then high winds, Tail managed to put on an excellent Spring Dog Show at our new venue, the Romeria Ground alongside Rio Torrox, on the 6th May. Despite our tribulations we managed to attract just over our average number of entries for the 15 classes, more stalls than previously including food and drink, with the general concensus being another show with great atmosphere, with thanks to all who put in the hours and also to all who came and supported Tail.

THANK YOU! It’s just occurred to me that we do not often enough say thank you to our media sponsors. Whatever publication you are reading now, they have generously devoted precious space to the Costa Animal Society (CAS) in most cases for many, many years. Without their generosity we could not be nearly as successful as we are in re-homing abused and abandoned animals. If you have a spare moment please send them a message mentioning how much you appreciate their support for animal charities and/or like/share their Facebook pages. Gracias para todos!

DON’T LEAVE PETS IN CARS! With the arrival of summer, the Costa Animal Society (CAS) is reminding dog owners to never leave their pets locked in the car. Police officers can and will break in to rescue the animals and will prosecute the owner. In Torre del Mar police broke into a car parked in the town’s Plaza de la Paz to rescue six dogs suffering from dehydration. Passers-by raised the alert after the car had been standing in the sunshine for five hours. When the owner finally appeared two hours later, he was told the dogs, which were unregistered, had been taken to a welfare centre. And on a very hot day in the UK a couple of summers ago, a Nottingham police dog handler left two German shepherds in his parked car where the temperature quickly rose to almost 50 degrees. Both dogs died within 20 minutes and the officer was prosecuted.

PUNTA LARA CAS QUIZ

Support comes in many forms and we can also report that, having previously mentioned being overrun with discarded puppies this year, we have set out to build an enclosure apart from the Refuge to house these poor animals. We have explained previously that puppies that have not been vaccinated cannot be housed with adult dogs. Help has been forthcoming from all quarters, a German charity is covering the metalwork cost, a builder down here is supplying groundwork materials and a few volunteers who have not previously helped have come forward to support this particular venture.

Are you searching for a new car?

Marketplace: Today we want you to introduce to Jürgen Haas and his new company www.autoagent.es. Hi Jürgen, how are you? Tell us something about your service. Jürgen: I’m importing quality 2nd hand cars from Germany on demand. My focus is on cars of German and British makes (but any other is possible , too), between 1-5 years old and with up to 100.000km. I also have contacts to campervan or classic car dealers. The unique thing about my service is, that I offer the complete service from start to finish! Finding the car you want, completing the purchase and managing the import procedures. That means, the customer is only involved twice in the process: in the beginning when he’s choosing the car and in the end, when he picks it up here in Frigiliana with the Spanish papers and number plates.

Marketplace: Why should people buy a nearly new second hand car from Germany? Jürgen: There are several reasons: Firstly, the nearly new 2nd hand car market is much bigger than here in Spain – this gives you the opportunity to choose nearly any colour or specification. Secondly, the cars are, like in the UK, much better looked after. All my cars have a gapless service history and are nonsmokers cars and the mileage is guaranteed. Thirdly, the cars are in much better condition, e.g. the paint or the headlights because of less sun, or the whole chassis, because of the better roads – I’m sure, 99% of the SUVs in Germany have never seen a campo track! Marketplace: What about the payment? Jürgen: The payment has to be made in advance to my bank account, after signing the buying and service contract. If you are paying from, for example, the UK, you can use our partner Currencies Direct and pay through them into my bank account. I don’t take cash. I keep the customer up to date about the status by email and they can call me any time. Whoever wants may have a copy of my passport as well. I have nothing to hide and I don’t want to rip anybody off. To those who only trust big companies: remember what happened in 2008!

Marketplace: That sounds good. How do you make sure that you only sell good cars? Jürgen: First of all, I only buy from serious dealers in Germany and, secondly, before the purchase, the car is checked by an independent engineer using an 80 point checklist and also looking at model specific issues. Thereby, I can make sure that the car is in perfect condition. Just last month I refused to buy a car because of too many issues after it was checked by the engineer. That’s Marketplace: What should people do when they are interested in in my interest as well, because I give at least a 1 year warranty on every car. WAGGY TAILS

Brownie and Munch are still looking for their forever homes, which goes to show the amount of time and cost it takes to find homes for dogs that are left on our doorstep.

OUR FEATURED DOG OF THE MONTH: ALFIE

BUSTER

ALFIE

Alfie was rescued by a mature lady at a café one day when he ran in to escape a dishevelled man who was flicking cigarette ashes and lit butts at him. The Good Samaritan couldn’t leave the pup in this abusive situation so she took him in even though she already has two dogs of her own. However, due to the rescuer’s age plus her lack of a fenced garden and with Alfie growing quite large, she is finding it difficult to manage 3 dogs so a more permanent home is being sought for this wonderful boy. Alfie is a good natured lad who is a little shy when he first meets someone new, which is not surprising considering his previous circumstances. Like most youngsters, he loves to play and gets along well with others. Alfie loves to fetch most everything you throw for him and has been trained to sit and give his paw. If you cannot resist Alfie’s good looks please contact Seacrest Kennels via e-mail at hotelparaperros.nerja@gmail.com or call 95 252 1426 to arrange a meeting.

CAS CAT CORNER

SOOTY

OHM

Puppy season is still in full force and the Costa Animal Society (CAS) has received an urgent appeal from a gentleman who lives in the Frigiliana campo. His female Labrador escaped from his garden and returned up the duff only to have a litter of 10 puppies in March. Unfortunately, the owner’s landlord is not happy that he now has 12 dogs living in his garden and is threatening eviction. Two of the ten pups have already been adopted and the 8 remaining for adoption are called Baby, Bouncer, Buster, Canada, Leo, Ohm, Sooty and Sweep. Baby was the runt and was usually pushed out at feeding time. She has been given extra attention and food and was the first to be weaned. Baby will definitely be a lap dog as she is very loving and sweet. Bouncer is a typical energetic pup with a white stripe on her chest. She is very friendly and outgoing and a black beauty with a white stripe on her chest. Buster is going to be huge as he is the second biggest of the litter and solid as a rock. He is very quiet and well behaved with and loves to give kisses. Canada is another quiet one who is also well behaved. He too is affectionate but not pushy and will be a typical Lab. Leo is a soft fluffy bundle of love who is always ready for a cuddle. Ohm is the biggest of the litter and she is the boss. She is a muscular female who is very playful and always takes care of Baby when the others bully her. Sooty is a solid black female who is very playful and a bit of a tear away as she is always biting ankles and chewing trouser legs. Sweep is the scamp of the group and is always getting into mischief. She is incredibly sweet and always playing with Sooty. In March, four sibling pups, Brownie, Munch, Scrappy and Spot were placed into kennels by the Costa Animal Society (CAS) After two months Scrappy and Spot found homes within two days of each other. Scrappy went to a foster couple at the beginning of May. After only one week they had fallen in love with him and decided to keep him permanently. Spot was spotted on the CAS website (www.casnerja.org) and went to a lovely English couple two days later. 50 THE MARKET PLACE

KENZO

TOM

The Costa Animal Society (CAS) currently has many cats available for adoption. Say hello to these two rascals. Kenzo is a long haired female and just over a year old. She needs a new home as she is currently having to be kept indoors all of the time, which is not good for her. She’s been neutered, vaccinated and chipped so can travel anywhere. She has a very friendly nature and gets on fine with the owners’ dog and they think that she’d probably be fine with another cat too. Tom, a fluffy boy cat is believed to be about 10 months old. He’d turned up at a rental accommodation where animals are not allowed. His finders have treated him against fleas and worms and are happy to get him vaccinated and castrated but they are unable to keep him and would like a loving home for him. They say he has a fabulous temperament, really easy going, adores a daily brush and loves his food. If you can offer a loving home to either Kenzo or Tom please contact CAS on 95 252 9670 or on Facebook at /casnerja

THE MARKET PLACE 51

Nerja

was once a sleepy fishing village but now the town has a population of over 21,000. The Balcón de Europa is a magnificent promenade that was made famous by King Alfonso XII , who’s statue now takes pride of place at the far end. Close by is the 17th century Church of El Salvador, and the beautiful gardens of Capistrano Playa. There are many beaches to be found either side and in front of the town, including Burriana with its numerous cafés and restaurants. Here too, you can take advantage of the water sports on offer, including water skiing, scuba diving and sailing. Just outside Nerja on the coast road towards Maro is a very impressive aquaduct which used to supply the local sugar factory.

Torre del Mar

is just 30 minutes from Malaga, and is the beach resort of Velez Málaga. Its population of 21,000 grows between June and September to 150,000. The towns attractions have expanded over the last few years to cope with the demand, and now the four kilometres of beach have been enhanced by an impressive promenade, which stretches all the way to Caleta de Vélez, a port providing over 200 berths and offering sailing and water sports. Throughout the summer, there are many Chiringuitos on the beach, serving fresh barbequed fish and ice cold beers. In 2002, Paseo de Larios was pedestrianized, and is now a tranquil promenade, with plenty of pavement cafés and restaurants. At the seafront end of Larios is a line of bars and discos which continue throughout the night on Fridays and Saturdays. The history of Torre is uncertain, but it is thought that it might have been part of an ancient Greek settlement, known as Mainake, which was destroyed by the Carthaginians. Tombs of the Carthaginians were found at the mouth of the river Velez. More recently, it was a small fishing village until major development began in the 1970’s.

nestles between the Punta de la Mona to the east and the rock of Cerro Gordo to the west. The bay enjoys shelter from west winds creating mostly crystal-clear waters, and is a popular location for water sports & paragliding. There are numerous beach bars and restaurants serving specialities of the region, including tropical salads, fresh fish or paella. The Marina del Este near La Herradura is tucked betwen Punta de la Mona to the west and Cotobro to the east. It boasts a beautiful port, elegantly designed to incorporate select shops, art galleries, bars and restaurants. This small strip of coast also claims to be the best place to dive between Almeria and Gibraltar, and is home to one of the areas leading diving schools.

Lake Viñuela

is a 15 minute drive from the N340 Autovia, leaving at the junction for Velez Malaga. Head inland along the A356; this direction also leads to numerous inland white villages. The first turning on our map is to Benamocarra, which is sign posted to the right after the last roundabout into Velez Malaga. This road will take you back over the main road and then also on to Iznate, and divides to take you to Almachar, El Borge and Cutar. The second turning off the A356 is on the right (after the Repsol garage) to Trapiche. Continue on the A356, and immediately you will see another junction on the left, sign posted to Benamargosa, Triana, Comares and Cutar. This road will also take you as far as Rio Gordo (for a scenic drive). There is a popular Spanish bar on the corner of this junction called El Cruz. Back on the A356, continue on and you will pass another junction on the right, to Canillas de Aceituno, and finally you will see Lake Vinuela in front of you. Turn right before the lake for Puente de Don Manuel, Alcaucin, Viñuela and Periana; carry straight on for Los Romanes, Rio Gordo and Colmenar.

Frigiliana

encompass 39.74 sq km within which live just over 3,000 people year round. Frigiliana is a popular tourist destination, and because there are many holiday homes here, the population triples during the summer months. The history of Frigiliana dates from prehistoric times. The village has been inhabited by numerous civilisations from the Phoenicians and Romans to the Arabs, who had the greatest impact on the town’s development. During the Christian reconquest, Frigiliana was the site of numerous battles culminating in the famous battle of the Rock of Frigiliana in 1569 which ended in the complete expulsion of the Moorish people. One can learn the history of this struggle by walking through the streets of the historic section where there are a series of twelve ceramic plaques posted about which explain the entire story.
