Decoration trends loved by travellers around the world The Mediterranean and Scandinavian style top the list of interior decoration trends inspired by holidays. These are the results from a survey carried out among 19,000 travellers from all over the world by Booking.com and Render Atelier, a design studio and architects that offer inspiration to those who want to recreate their holiday within their home. The relaxation that you have on holiday is not only achieved by visiting a quiet destination, if your accommodation is stylish too with good design it will also have a positive impact. More than two thirds of global travellers say that it helps them to be more comfortable during their trips. Get up every day with a feeling of continuing on your holiday You can enjoy good interior design even if you are not traveling, you can recreate the trends inspired by your holidays easily in your home. A study carried out by booking.com has revealed trends in interior decoration with a holiday theme are preferred by 19,000 travellers from all over the world.
Mediterranean This timeless style (top right and below) evokes your days sailing the seas and the feeling of relaxation enveloped by a fresh and minimalist range of
colours. The keys: mosaic tiles, natural fabrics and textures like linen. Also robust wooden furniture and terracotta floors.
Scandinavian This style is characterised by simplicity, minimalism, practicality and beauty (page 14, top right). It is sober and emphasises the most impeccable craftsmanship. The use of light wood, clean shapes and curved finishes both in architecture and in furniture. This trend has been adopted by people from around the world and the style generally is one which adopts less clutter and gives great importance to natural light.
Rustic The rural style is defined by its maximalist aesthetics, the use of robust wood and resistant floors, made of natural materials such as stone. All this makes the room feel warm, cosy and comfortable. In a country house nothing is too delicate. And everything has a weathered and aged look, which gives a romantic and nostalgic air.
Zen Japanese interior design is famous for its shapes and functionality (above). Originally it was dominated by the aesthetics of Buddhism, extremely sober. The Japanese are known all over the world for their genius in using space well and for their philosophy that all 12 THE MARKET PLACE

objects must have a concrete use. “Less is more rules in Japanese interiors. As well as the neutral colours, the warm and natural tones and the straight lines, accentuated by the extreme care of their gardens.
Urban Chic Huge windows with views of print, exposed brick walls, wooden floors (bottom left). These are the main elements of any house with a chic urban design that also contains open and wide spaces, solid furniture, design pieces and striking works of art. Urban luxury of truth.
Other Trends of Interest Other decoration trends that are successful among travellers around the world are: Parisian vintage (pompous decoration with beautiful old pieces), alpine chalet (which refers to the alpine forests and snowy mountains) and Arabic inspiration (colourful design on fabrics and textures ). The chic, eclectic and extreme bohemian style is more popular among the female audience (18% vs. 10% of men). And the Zen style was chosen by the participants in the age bracket between 18 and 24 years old (42% versus 34% of the global total).
Make your home remind you of holidays More than half (56%) of travellers say that the design (or the look and feel) of their holiday accommodation inspires them to renovate their home. One in five says that staying in a place with an original decoration inspired them. And almost 3 out of 10 respondents (27%) say that contact with other cultures and ways of seeing life during the holidays is stimulating. Emulating your holiday home does not have to involve big changes in your
decoration. You can make your house remind you of the last destination you have visited in very simple ways. Buying decorative objects on your trips, for example. Among the pieces most chosen to take home are handicraft objects. But also small souvenirs (for example, magnets, works of art, decorative objects, textiles and crockery pieces. So if you are a tourist to our lovely area of Spain, make sure you check out the local markets, artisan shops of the area especially in the small whitewashed villages of Frigiliana and Competa for a certain special something to take back to your home to remind you of your trip away to this area. Or if you live here in the Axarquia, especially if you have anything to do with the property market be it rentals or sales, think carefully how you can design, redecorate and furnish houses - clients want to experience the best interior they can for their budget. Let’s do our absolute best to give them special memories and a holiday or house purchase they will never forget.

Local News Local News Local News Local News Pensioners protest across Spain
Pensioners have been marching in the streets across Spain's major towns and cities as they try to fight for a fair deal on their pensions. Since the Partido Popular came into government state pensions have only gone up by the minimum of 0.25% each year. This means that pensioners are now poorer than they were six years ago because the increases have not kept up with rising living costs. As well as pension payments the General Workers Unions are concerned that the government have borrowed so much from reserve funds that these will be nearly empty annd will lead to retirement payments not being guaranteed or being very low for future pensioners. The Health Minister Dolors Montserrat said that her government is always thinking of pensioners in Spain and recalled that other cabinets in the past had frozen pensions. She said in the 2018 budget there was a 3% rise for the lowest pensions and 2% for widows' and widowers' pensions and non contributory ones. But no increases seem to be included for those on middle income pensions.
Online shopping craze on Costa del Sol - Amazon opens distribution centre Retailing giant Amazon has announced that it will open its first distribution centre in the area to cope with increasing local demand. A deal has been made with train infrastructure company, Adif to put up a temporary structure on 13,000 square metres of land next to the rail tracks near the Guadalhorce industrial estate. This means Amazon can finally fulfil its promise to customers to deliver goods in 24 hours. Amazon already has a local distribution centre in Seville of 10,000m2 where there are 80 people employed. The Malaga site will be a temporary one until the company finds a larger more permanent site to build a larger Costa del Sol distribution centre. 16 THE MARKET PLACE

Warhol Mechanical Art
Picasso Museum presents the creative development of the iconic artist from his beginnings in New York in the 1950s until his death in 1987. Warhol created works which became part of the official history of art, at the same time as they took root in contemporary popular imagination. The exhibition covers the complete production of the artist (born in Pittsburgh in 1928), placing special emphasis on the transmutations that his legacy undergoes in the consecutive creative episodes of his career.

May Crosses in Torrox Celebrated on the 3rd May, the crucifix, as a symbol is celebrated and is placed on a high altar with a mirror behind it. People make offerings of seasonal fruit, flowers, dolls and an apple with scissors in it. This unusual act is behind a belief that the scissors stuck in the apple represent the person who has no faith in the cross, to cut his tongue. Vases of flowers are placed on the sides of the altar.

Car News

First Driving Impressions – Volvo XC40, UK Press launch, Motherwell, Scotland
It was up to Scotland to drive the all-new Volvo XC40 - a small, Premium SUV and the smaller brother of the XC60 and XC90. The XC40 is up against some stiff competition including: Range Rover Evoque, Audi Q3, MINI Countryman, BMW X1, Mercedes Benz GLA, and the recently introduced DS 7 Crossback.
V
olvo had a good year in 2017, selling 571,000 cars globally and 46,000 of those in the UK. Volvo say that after 2019 every car will have some form of electrification, such as pure EV and mildhybrid. The XC40 is launched with two 2.0-litre engines, a petrol and a diesel ranging from 150hp to 247hp, manual or automatic, and two or four-wheel drive. Volvo have also announced a 1.5-litre 3-cylinder petrol engine that should be with us this summer. There are seven models at launch and these are: First Edition, Momentum, Momentum Pro, R-Design, R-Design Pro, Inscription and Inscription Pro. The Pro versions have additional features that do vary from model to model, but include nice features such as heated front seats, heated washer nozzles, active bending headlights, power drivers seat with memory, headlight cleaning, heated windscreen and front LED fog lights with cornering function. This new Volvo is packed full of safety, technology and innovation, as you would expect from Volvo. One interesting thing they showed us in the car park at the hotel near Motherwell was the feature that you can start the car using an iPad from your home, office, a café, supermarket, or in fact… anywhere. You can set the heating to get it nice and warm, or nice and chilled on a hot day. But the car remains locked and no one can get into it, and when you do go to the car it automatically turns the engine off once you unlock the car, again for safety. All clever stuff and who knows, next thing is they will 20 THE MARKET PLACE
be driving themselves. You have heard that Hot Chocolate song ‘It started with a kiss’ – well Volvo have now got their own - ‘ It started with an App’ The first car I drove was the First Edition D4 diesel 190hp 8-speed auto, and this car was fully, fully loaded with goodies, but at a cost of £39,905 OTR, and what a nice thing it was. The First Edition is based on the R-Design Pro, but has even more standard equipment, if that is possible. This diesel engine is so sweet, so smooth and quiet, and a pleasure to drive. Volvo say around 75% of XC40 sales will be diesel but as we all know, this is likely to change. The second car to try on Scottish roads was the petrol version of the First Edition, the T5 2.0-litre 247hp auto that goes from 0-62mph in 6.5 seconds, and if I thought the diesel was good, then this was so much better. The engine has so much power, yet is economical and so smooth - and kinder to city folk than the diesel, as clean as it is. This petrol engine really is a pleasure to drive. We took both cars on a similar route in between Edinburgh and Glasgow, from motorway driving, and then up into them there hills, still snow covered from the spring bad weather... yes, spring, not winter. The roads were fairly clear, so the AWD was not needed, but a nice thing to have – just in case. When you sit in the XC40 it really is a nice place to sit, so luxurious, so well fitted out, everything looks and feels quality. Volvo have certainly got the cabin in this car
spot-on right, it is so good and needs to be seen to be believed. There is a large innovative SENSUS 9-inch screen that is very clear with many functions and helps reduce the number of buttons required to operate the cars major functions. The boot space is good, and probably as large as you’d get in this sector. The rear parcel shelf can be removed and stored beneath the luggage compartment floor, there is also a flexible floor that allows you to neatly separate your luggage, shopping and goods. Beneath the centre arm rest there an area has been specifically designed to take a box of tissues, just in case you get upset when you have to get out of the car..!!! The exterior has been well thought through. The front end is very Volvo with its large grille and the brands T-Shaped daytime running lights. The rear is also very Volvo with those distinctive taillights. But everything in between is not really Volvo at all, it is very different to anything else they have produced – this small premium SUV is bold, contemporary and expressive, and I like it. Prices for this Belgium built XC40 start from £27,905 OTR and go up to £40,055. This sector of the market is growing and taking over from traditional hatches. There is much choice for this type and size of vehicle, with the price range getting ever larger. But Volvo seem to have got everything right with the XC40 and it will be interesting to drive their new 1.5-litre petrol engine later in the year.

The Gemstone of
May
by Alex of Gabriela Jewellers, Nerja
Emerald
The name Emerald comes from the Greek ‘Smaragdos’ which means ‘green stone’ and is with its bright green the most famous gemstone of its family. It exists from opaque to transparent and the green colour is caused by traces of chromium in the gemstones chemical composition. High quality gems with a darker rich green colour, only very small and very few inclusions and a beautiful transparency throughout the stone are most desired and very valuable.
Gemstone family:
Emerald is the most precious variety of the Beryl-family. It is related to Aquamarine (sea blue), Morganite (pink), Bixbite (red), Heliodor (yellow-green), Goshenite (colourless) and golden and green Beryl (pastel green; green stones which do NOT contain chromium are NOT classified Emeralds).
Hardness:
7,5 - 8 ; out of a scale 1-10 (10 being the hardest), Emerald is relatively hard, but unfortunately brittle as well and therefore needs to be handled with great care !!!
Origin:
The most important deposits are in Columbia and Brazil with the best quality Emeralds. It is also found in Afghanistan, Pakistan, South Africa, Ghana, Malawi, Madagascar, Mozambique, Nigeria, Tanzania, Zimbabwe, Zambia, India, Russia, USA and Australia. In historical times (perhaps as early as 2000 B.C.) the mines of Cleopatra in Egypt were of importance, however they were mined out long ago...
Healing properties: Emerald gives alertness, clarity and vision and supports the sense of beauty, harmony and justice. This healing gemstone helps to find new orientations, goals and meaning during crisis in life. It promotes honesty and openness and encourages mental growth. Physically, Emerald helps with vision problems and heals inflammation of the sinuses and upper respiratory tract. It stimulates the liver, activates detoxification and deacidification and therefore helps with rheumatism and gout. It can decrease pain and strengthens the immune system. 22 THE MARKET PLACE
Famous Emeralds: Throughout history emeralds have been worn by some of the most influential and famous woman in time such as Jackie Onassis Kennedy, Elisabeth Taylor and Queen Elisabeth II amongst other royals all over the world. The Chalk Emerald: This Colombian emerald is 37,8 carats and is with its velvety deep green colour and superb clarity one of the finest emeralds in the world. Legends say it once was the centrepiece of an emerald and diamond necklace belonging to a Maharani of the former state of Baroda, India. After a recut the precious emerald was set into a diamond ring by Harry Winston. In 1972 the ring was donated by Mr. and Mrs. Chalk to the Smithsonian Museum in Washington D.C. The French Diadem: This emerald and diamond tiara was commissioned in 1819 by Louis-Antoine, the Duke of Angouleme for his wife Marie-Therese, the Duchess of Angouleme. It is an exquisite masterpiece and is of immense value due to the exceptional emeralds and the fact that it remained as one of only a few jewels of that period in its original state. The diadem went through a long list of owners and finally belongs to the Louvre Museum in Paris, France where it is displayed today for the public to admire. The Moghul Emerald: Indian rulers were fascinated by emeralds as they were supposed to be bringers of good luck and the Moghul emerald, found in 1695 is one of the most unique artefacts from India. It is a 217,80 carat square gem which was carved on both sides. The Moghul rulers were Sunni Muslim and the front carving features an elegant Arabic script of a Muslim prayer. It is believed the talisman did not belong to the Emperor himself but to one of his officers. Even though this gem was carved and admired in India, it is believed it originated from Colombia. In 2001 it was sold at an auction of Christie’s in London for US$ 2.2 Million. The Guinness Emerald Crystal: It was discovered in the Coscuez emerald mine in Colombia and with its 1759 carat weight is one of the largest gem-quality emerald crystals ever found. The crystal belongs to the collection of the Banco Nacionale de la Republica in Bogota, Colombia. The Seringapatam Jewels: This is one of the most breathtaking sets of emerald and diamond jewellery consisting of a pair of drop earrings, a necklace, a brooch and a bracelet. The emeralds were originally given to the British Major-General George Harris after a victory at the Battle of Seringapatam in India in 1799. The gems remained in the family and were set into this gorgeous set of jewels over a period of years beginning with the marriage of the fourth Lord Harris and his wife Lucy Ada in 1874. The last jewellery piece of the set was made in 1887. Today, this stunning ornate set is held at the Victoria and Albert Museum in England.

Art Gaucin Open Studios 2018 The Art Gaucin Open Studios weekends have become a wellknown fixture of the art scene in Andalucia, with exhibitions of work by several Spanish and foreign artists. Now well into its second decade, the Art Gaucin Open Studios event is an opportunity to meet the artists, learn more about their work and techniques, and see and buy their paintings, sculptures, prints, photographs and ceramics. The event is set in the picturesque village of Gaucin, one of the famous white pueblos near Estepona and Ronda. This year, the Art Gaucin Open Studios will take place over two long weekends – Friday May 25 to Sunday May 27, and Friday June 1 to Sunday June 3 – and will showcase new work by Art Gaucin’s member artists as well as by guest artists Javier Machimbarrena from Spain and Gerrit Oppelland-Hampel from Germany. Launched more than a decade ago, Art Gaucin has built up a strong following both locally in Andalucia and overseas. Its long-established members include Jim Rattenbury, whose paintings and sculptures are in several private collections abroad, and Michael Roschlau, former Glasgow School of Art lecturer and artist whose works include lithographs, paintings and intricate clockwork wall sculptures. Art Gaucin’s roster of painters includes Joseba Sánchez Zabaleta, Ana Pellón, Nozomi Hatano, and Paddy Robinson. The group includes photographers Chris Klees and Vivienne Whiffen as well as ceramicists and sculptors Juan Antonio Sangil, Rosie Venables and Anna McGrane, Sebastian Fisher and Silvia Franco. With its warren of quiet, pretty streets, Gaucin is a delightful place to explore on foot. It has ancient castle ruins, offers spectacular views across the coast and towards Africa, and provides plenty of places to linger over a coffee, tapas or something more substantial while enjoying those panoramas as the village has several popular and celebrated restaurants. Local artisans will also be showing a selection of jewellery, blankets and other hand made crafts. With the upgrading of the road from Gaucin to the coast, access is faster and smoother – now just 45 minutes from Estepona and 40 minutes from Ronda.

Aries ( 21 March – 19 April )
You can be presented with the opportunity to make a dream of yours come true and it’s an exciting prospect. You can focus on something intensely and learn as much as you can about it to become somewhat of an expert and people can look to you for your expertise. This could be an excellent time to do some work on your home that increases it’s value.
Taurus ( 20 April – 20 May )
You can achieve many smaller goals or a big goal because you’re so dedicated and hard-working, and have enough energy to keep working until you’re done. You’re charming and can attract many suitors, though you can keep them at a distance emotionally. You need a certain amount of freedom in love, otherwise you’ll run away when you feel stifled. You’ll need patience, or you’ll rip out your hair.
Gemini ( 21 May – 20 June)
You have plenty of drive and stamina to get work done, and you can cross a lot off of your list. If you’re in a relationship, you can grow closer to your partner, you’re both a lot happier, and your bond together deepens. You can improve the relationships you have with your family, move into a better home and feel like you’re on solid ground.
Cancer ( 21 June – 22 July )
Your career and work life gets a boost as the month goes on and you continue to experience rapid changes in your career, feel restless and want to try new things, and be attracted to work that’ll push you out of your comfort zone. You can date unusual people, have unusual relationships, start relationships fast and end them just as quickly, and be attracted to original people.
Leo ( 23 July – 22 August )
You have energy and drive to accomplish your goals and achieve success, and these could lead to powerful changes. You have more confidence, you can think more clearly, and you come up with new ideas. Just watch for being overly ruthless or dominating. You want to spend time with loved ones, have one-on-one attention with them, commit yourself to them and forge better intimacy.
Virgo ( 23 August – 22 September )
You can be creative, but you have to force yourself to concentrate, otherwise the creative energy goes nowhere. You may want to focus on your hobbies too much, forgoing any work and just wanting to indulge in play. You can be a little too theatrical in love, be a little too jealous, or have too much pride. Listen to your gut and pay attention to any signs the universe has for you.

You’re calmer and more steady and in touch with your senses. Your beliefs are more important to you, and you feel more emotionally connected to them. Scorpio ( 23 October – 21 November )
This month can bring your finances to the forefront, and you decide what you need to do differently. Give yourself plenty of time to get your work done, and don’t take on too much or you’ll drain yourself. This is a good month for dealing with your loved ones, expressing your love for others, and spending time with those you’re close to.
Sagittarius ( 22 November -21 December ) You can have the opportunity to pursue one of your dreams, be more focused on your future, pursue something outside of the box that could lead to great new things, start a new friendship or join a new group. You can focus on the direction your life is taking, and see if you need to shift course at all. You’re also more authoritative and want to give orders, not take them.
Capricorn ( 22 December – 19 January ) You’ll likely feel more enthusiastic and open to starting something new. This is a great time if you’re an artistic type, and you can channel this energy into your creations. You feel good about trying new ideas that are unusual and innovative, and like being around with original people.

The Royal British Legion, Nerja Branch Like me, some of you may never have heard of the Walter Mitty Hunters Club before, but I am glad I heard the expression “stolen valour” and decided to investigate. The club refers to a team of dedicated personnel who previously or currently have served, who work to expose fake military personnel. Though some may question what harm these “eccentric “ types do, it could be asked if they actually damage the reputation and credibility of real veterans, resulting in an insidious effect of the way the public view former military personnel. Some individuals have been known to use false histories to gain financial support from military charities, secure employment, and even use the impact of deployment-related illness to gain leniency during court sentencing. Some have been found to have used information from real operational events in which service members have been killed to establish a credible story, and gain attention for several years before exposure. Naturally, this is most upsetting for both the real personnel and their families. Imposters who have never served are one thing but genuine veterans who talk up and embellish their service career are seen to be the most disappointing and frustrating. A retired Colonel who served more than 30 years with the Royal Marines said recently that he had never met a veteran who isn’t modest, to the point of humility, about his or her service. Those who embellish their stories are
immediately suspect and do a disservice to themselves as everyone has a part to play in success, no matter how small. The eccentric imposters who have never served are a different matter, they deserve our pity rather than opprobrium.” I can assure you that the members of the Nerja Branch are no imposters, we are just a group of like minded people who try to lend a hand to those who have historically or currently looked after our freedoms. Although it is nearly 100 years since the end of WW1, as we well know it wasn’t the war to end all wars, and there are thousands of veterans who still require our support. To that end we aim to raise money for the Legion so that it can carry out this important work, and with our aging population and dwindling numbers it is becoming more and more difficult. The concert we had hoped to hold in the Caves Restaurant at the end of April had to be cancelled due to very poor ticket sales. As our aim is to raise money there is no way we can organise functions which run at a loss and so reluctantly we had to cancel. To anyone who had hoped to go and is disappointed, you have our apologies, we were looking forward to it too. It is also very disappointing for the Choir and their musical director, who
had put in hours of practice only to be frustrated and let down in the end. On a happy note the Nerja Residents Day was a great success due to the sterling efforts of Dorothy Allen (our Poppy Appeal Co-ordinator) and we raised E400. Thank you also to everyone who came along and supported us and for those individuals and businesses who donated items for our tombola. On 30th June we will be having our annual Armed Forces day lunch which will be attended by Major Del Hamilton from the Personnel Recovery Centre in Edinburgh which we support, and he will bring us up to date with what is happening there and how our contributions are being used. If you are interested in coming to this lunch or any other, please contact Vera on; 952967200 or Email: ozzybaldwin@ yahoo.co.uk And please note you do not have to be ex military, or currently serving, you do not have to be British, you do not have to wear black tie (or any other accoutrements) just come along and join us. We will endeavour to make sure you enjoy the experience.
The Nerja Players Celebrate 30 Years in Nerja At the final meeting of the season members of The Nerja Players and guests celebrated their 30th Anniversary with a special presentation tracing their history from the early days of recording plays for radio, through stage productions in the Casa de Cultura to performing fortnightly Rehearsed Readings in the Club premises. Members performed the first ever play to be broadcast 'Sorry Wrong Number" and readings from early theatre performances "Under Milk Wood" and Noel Coward. After a delicious finger buffet, members watched a 34 THE MARKET PLACE
digital presentation of scenes compiled from videos of past productions of plays and musicals at the Casa and an entertaining evening was enjoyed by all. The new season begins on October 16th with a cold reading of the comedy Boeing Boeing. If you are interested in the theatre and would like to take part do come along and join in.

Study reveals a ketogenic diet can help keep weight off long term
A banana offers the same energy as a sports drink It’s time to ditch the sports drink for a healthy banana when you’re in need of an energy boost, according to a new study. The research, published in Plos One, found that the healthy snack offers the same energy boost as sports drinks, and provide you with a hit of antioxidants, fibre, potassium and vitamin B6. Furthermore, the fruit also helps reload electrolytes and carbohydrates. Researchers from the Appalachian State University’s Human Performance Lab examined 20 male and female cyclists after they completed four timed 75 kilometre trials, with a two week break in between each trial. For each trial, the cyclists consumed one of two types of bananas (Cavendish and mini yellow bananas), water, or a six per cent sugar drink. Blood samples were taken before the race, at multiple other points during the race, and at intervals up to 45 hours after the race. The results found that both types of bananas were not only useful in fuelling the athletes during the workout, but the fruit also had postworkout benefits such as a reduction in pain, swelling and inflammation. When participants had only consumed water, they showed high levels of inflammation and stress, but their levels were low when they consumed the six per cent sugar drink or fruit. David C. Nieman, doctor of public health and co-author of the study, explained the benefits of consuming a banana before, during or after a workout, can have a similar effect to aspirin or ibuprofen, which are normally taken to fight muscle pain and inflammation. “This makes bananas close to the perfect athletic food.” 36 THE MARKET PLACE
A group of Spanish researchers have uncovered yet another reason to love the keto diet. Not only does it burn fat fast, it could also help to keep weight off long term. In a study published in the Nutrition & Metabolism Journal, researchers looked at obese patients who wanted to lose weight and found that the lowcalorie diet was perfect in maintaining weight loss for up to two years. In case you’ve been living under a rock, the keto diet works like this: you cut carbs but eat food high in fat and protein. This means that your body relies on fat as its energy source and when it runs out of ingested fat, it starts burning excess fat stores. Result: you lose those extra pounds and everything in your wardrobe fits again. Magic! Earlier research has also shown that when you restrict your energy intake (a.k.a. going on a diet) the
body copes with the loss of energy by decreasing your resting metabolic rate (RMR). If this sounds confusing, it’s actually pretty simple. Essentially when you eat less your body copes by using less energy for basic activities such as breathing. It’s basically going into survival mode, conserving precious energy for when it really needs it. If over time your body adapts to need less energy for basic functions then you need less energy intact overall. Researchers in this study hypothesised that the lowcalorie keto diet could trigger this reaction in turn diminishing the likelihood of weight regain later on. Sadly the study didn’t result in an overall change in resting metabolic rate but it did result in maintained weight loss for participants. Researchers concluded this was due to the fact lean muscle mass is often preserved when following the keto diet. Even though the study didn’t result in an overall change to the RMR, eating full fat everything and losing weight long term still sounds pretty good to me!
Study reveals tinned tuna contains unsafe levels of Zinc The cheap lunch staple contains up to 100 times more zinc than what is considered safe, which could ruin people’s guts, according to a new study. The mineral is commonly used to line the inside of cans for its anti-microbial qualities and to prevent staining of sulfur producing foods. Such exposure allows it to leach into the food, enter people’s digestive system, thus altering the body’s ability to absorb nutrients. In the first study of its kind, researchers from Binghamton University, New York, examined cans of sweetcorn, tuna, asparagus and chicken, which are all naturally low in zinc and normally packaged using the mineral. The results found some of the tinned foods tested carried 100 times the recommended dietary allowance. More significantly, the researchers found tuna touching the inside of the can was the most contaminated with over 5,000 pm, and tuna in the middle had nearly the same amount. The juices at the bottom of the can had approximately a third of the zinc contamination as the food touching the can. “It was found the zinc present in a serving of these foods is approximately one hundred times higher than the recommended dietary allowance,” explained bioengineer Professor Gretchen Mahler, of the Binghamton University. “We found zinc oxide (ZnO) nanoparticles at doses that are relevant to what you might normally eat in a meal or a day can change the way your intestine absorbs nutrients or your intestinal cell gene and protein expression.” Furthermore, Professor Mahler warned that over-exposure to zinc interferes with the transport of iron and glucose.

Robot Exhibition at the Parque de las Ciencias - Granada After admiring the birds of prey, we headed inside to look at the various exhibitions, one of which was the brand new "Robots. Humans and Machines" exhibition.
A
fter a trip to the Sierra Nevada mountains, we recently discovered the wonderful science museum in Granada. It is called the "Parque de las Ciencias" and houses many exhibitions, a Planetarium, Bio dome and lots of practical ways to learn more about science. I was really surprised at the size of the museum and realised quickly that it was not something that could be explored in just one afternoon. Getting there is fairly easy - google maps lead us directly there with no hitches! Car parking is underneath the museum and is free for the first 3 hours while you are in the museum - bargain! The price is only 7 euros for adults and 6 for children, although different parts of the museum are extra and you really need to look at how much time you have and what you would prefer to see in that time. We checked the times for the birds of prey in flight and luckily there was a display within ten minutes of us arriving. It was an excellent show, especially if you have children. The bird handler had the birds flying across the audience of people, it was quite an incredible and a daring demonstration. There were owls, falcons, vultures and eagles and although you were not invited to handle them they were really close up.
After admiring the birds of prey, we headed inside to look at the various exhibitions. One of which was the brand new "Robots. Humans and Machines" exhibition. This exhibition was about the relationship between humans and machines. From the first stone tools, through to complex machines and how these things have allowed humans to do things we would never have been able to do without them. The idea of a humanoid machine has facinated us and captured our imagination long before we were ever able to create one. We only have to think of Doctor Who and the huge following the programme has.
- could humans merge with machines one day? Will we share the world with robots that look like us down to the smallest detail? Only time will tell but one thing is for sure, the human machine relationship will be very exciting.
The exhibition certainly captured our imaginations, making us think about the machines in every day life that help us live our lives. There was even an actual robot with a screen attached to it where you could ask questions and find out information.
We headed to the Darwin Cafe in the museum to get refreshments, which I have to say is a really relaxing zone, with wifi computers for you to use and a library and chill out area.
We saw lots of machines that have been developed to live inside our bodies too, such as prosthetic limbs, implants and pacemakers which have enabled many people to lead normal lives.
Afterwards we spent a further few hours viewing other interesting exhibitions, like the "Wonders of Wildlife" for example which showed an astonishing view of animal life, with each animal looking like it had been frozen in real life (they are jumping, running, escaping or hunting) portraying the harmony and drama of their existence.
After several hours our heads were filled with too much new information to process so we decided to leave but vowed to return another day to experience the bits we had missed - The Bio Dome, Planetarium, Butterfly area and the Observation tower.
Then the exhibition looked to the future
Friends of Lux Mundi visit Lisbon Recently friends of Lux Mundi from Torre del Mar and Fuengirola travelled by coach to Lisbon. They stayed at the four-star Fenix Urban hotel for five nights, giving them plenty of time to take the tourist bus and see the city.
A ferry took some across the river Tagus to visit the famous Cristo Rei and enjoy the views of the city and the river. Others visited various museums including the Gulbenkian Collection and the Se, the city's cathedral with its twin castellated bell towers and rose window. Some of the group also visited the Torre de Belem, the cultural centre, the Museu Nacional dos Coches and the beautiful Mosteiro dos Jeronimos with its richly carved arches and

Try Yoga for any digestive relief If you’ve ever felt butterflies in your stomach, so stressed you might throw up, too depressed to eat, running to the bathroom a million times before catching a flight, or unable to “go” in unfamiliar places, then you have some idea about the mysterious connection between the mind and the gut. It is quite common for gastrointestinal diseases such as irritable bowel syndrome, Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis to be accompanied by psychological disorders such as anxiety and depression. The gastrointestinal tract is lined with millions of nerve cells that provide up-to-the-minute feedback regarding thoughts, emotions and the body’s overall well being. This is why some experts refer to the GI tract as our “second brain.” Even if you’re lucky enough to be free of digestive ailments, busy and food-filled times, such as the holidays, can leave us feeling bloated and sluggish. Because yoga has the ability to restore both body and mind, it can provide digestive relief in two main ways. First, moving through the asanas, or postures, of yoga stimulates blood flow, massages the digestive organs and can help relieve gas. Second, through the practice of meditation and pranayama, or regulation of the breath, a consistent yoga practice can provide both a profound relief of acute stress and an awareness of the sources of stress in one’s life for chronic management. Yin and restorative yoga are two different but similar types of yoga that move at a slower pace and involve holding poses for longer periods of time, which can be especially soothing to a nervous system in overdrive. A traditional vinyasa yoga class will be more active. Just as there are various styles of yoga practice, a variety of meditation techniques exist. Curious to try some yoga or meditation for yourself? Trying the flow below can help keep your digestive rhythms peaceful and smooth, but attending a yoga class with a certified instructor is always a good idea to ensure proper form.
Meditation Start by finding a comfortable seat. Sitting on a cushion or blanket to keep the hips higher than the knees will prevent that nagging pins and needle 44 THE MARKET PLACE
sensation if your legs tend to fall asleep. Another trick here is to tip the pelvis and hip bones forward to keep the blood flowing adequately through the legs while seated. Place your hands on your knees or in your lap and sit up straight without being too rigid. Let your eyes fall closed and tune into the pattern of your breath. No need to change the breath, just observe with curiosity what is happening there. Is the breath shallow or long? Is the breath easily flowing from the nose through the lungs and into the abdomen or are your abdominal muscles tense? Scan the body from head to toe, consciously relaxing any areas of tension and sending breath to those areas.
Yoga Poses Seated side bend. Sitting cross legged, lengthen the spine so the crown of the head reaches up toward the ceiling. Keeping shoulders relaxed, reach one arm up toward the ceiling, while the other finds the ground to your side. Reach up and over, to the side of your lower arm, allowing that arm to bend at elbow for a deeper stretch. Pressing the hip bone on the same side as your raised arm into the ground will further intensify the stretch. Cat cow. Find a table-top position on hands and knees. Hands should be shoulder width apart, knees hip width apart. Elbows and wrists should be stacked under the shoulders, knees directly under the hips. Inhale to cow pose, taking the gaze up to the ceiling and swaying the back so the belly drops toward the ground while the sitting bones tilt up to the ceiling. As you exhale, come into cat pose by rounding the spine, looking down at the ground. Continue alternating between the two poses in sync with your own breath. Forward fold. From a standing position, inhale the arms up overhead, looking up. Exhale to bow forward into a fold. Experiment with keeping legs bent to further access the hamstrings. You might grab opposite elbows and hang to release tension in the upper back or place the hands on the ground under the feet, palms facing up, to stretch the wrists. Revolved triangle. While standing, step one leg back about a leg’s length. Keep both hip bones facing forward, then fold over the front leg, trying to keep the back flat and level. Having a block or stack of books to rest the hands on can be helpful so that the legs and back can remain straight and hips aligned. Place the hand opposite to the front leg down on the ground, reaching the other arm up to the sky. If it is comfortable for you, you also might take the gaze up to the outstretched arm. Bow. Laying on your stomach, reach back with both arms to grasp the ankles. Empty the body of breath, then on your next inhale, press the ankles into the hands to rise. Each breath will gently rock the body, massaging the lower abdominals. Knee to chest (wind-removing pose). Roll over to the back so you’re laying flat. Bring one knee at a time into the chest, holding with both arms. Next, bring both knees to chest. Rocking side-to-side will massage the low back and kidneys. Rolling in small circles in each direction to massage the sacrum is another option. Legs up the wall. Savasana, or corpse pose, is a common final resting pose in yoga sequences, but legs up the wall is a fun and restorative alternative. Stay in the pose anywhere from 5 to 15 minutes. Don’t be alarmed if your toes start tingling! Healthy Recipe: Rice Noodles in Miso Green Tea Broth

Local animal charities C.A.S. (Costa Animal Society) RESIDENTS DAY NERJA Thank you to all who stopped by to say hello to the Costa Animal Society (CAS) at this year’s Residents Day in Nerja. Treacherous winds threatened more than a few toupees but we all stayed dry. A little more than E600 was raised, a fantastic result. All, of course, goes directly to the rescue, care, re-habilitating and re-homing of animals in need in Nerja and Maro.
A special thanks to Cathy and Juan from The Coach and Horses for manning the grill along with CAS’s Vera, Kurt and Laura. (Thank you also for offering a vegetarian option.) And to CAS stalwarts Colin, Marjorie and Diana for running the tombola. And, especially CAS would like to thank the Nerja town hall and to Jacky in particular for organising this event which highlights the diversity of cultures of the ex-pat community who call Nerja home.
HAPPY TAILS Spring is in full swing and the Costa Animal Society (CAS) is once again managing an increase in the puppies and kittens which fall under our purview. Bella and Lobo are two youngsters who were abandoned in a house when their owners moved back to their home country and left them behind with little more than a note and a small donation. The manner in which these siblings were dumped was not only cruel for the dogs, who had no idea what was going on, but was also made more difficult for CAS to organise because housing had to be sorted on an urgent basis with no time to plan for foster care. Fortunately, Bella was soon adopted by a young family from Benalmadena and has already settled into her new life. Lobo is still living in kennels but CAS is hoping he will be re-homed before the summer. Daisy and Alba were also brought to CAS in March as part of a litter of pups abandoned in Maro. These lovely girls were checked over by our vet and vaccinated, 48 THE MARKET PLACE

short time you could make a real difference by fostering one of these youngsters for the society. If you would like to meet Lobo, Jody or one of the other pups up for adoption on the CAS website please feel free to contact Kurt or Laura at 95 252 1426 or Fiona on the CAS website, www.casnerja. org, or the CAS Facebook.

And so it was with great interest that we read about a very promising initiative in Malaga, as reported by Soltalk’s JODY MARILYN Sarah Brookes: “And well done to the city of Málaga which has launched a scheme to train volunteers to manage colonies of stray cats. The BROWNIE MUNCH project has
been made possible thanks to a E30,000 grant from the municipal Environmental Sustainability department to the animal protection group AMAN which is already active in controlling the feral population. The first training session last month was attended by municipal technicians from the department who explained how such groups of animals can be controlled. The methods outlined are intended to give maximum security to the cats as well as satisfying the requirements of humans in the area. The volunteers were told that cats which make up feral groups usually come from a domestic situation but have ceased to be socialised with humans. In most cases they aren’t completely wild and are dependent on people, if only in scavenging from bins and restaurants.” Over the coming month we hope to learn more about this initiative and see how it applies to our work in Nerja. Stay tuned. (Thanks again, Sarah.)
CAN YOU HELP CAS? The Costa Animal Society (CAS) is always in need of more volunteer helpers in a number of areas, so if you have spare time to fill, please make contact! In particular, more fundraisers are needed to work with our team. In addition, fosterers are always required to take short-term care of animals until a permanent home can be found for them. Everything you need will be provided for you: bedding, food, medications, toys, etc. and 24 hour help if you need it. Even if you are only here for few months a year, CAS would appreciate your help. For a no-obligation chat, contact Vera on 95 252 9670 for general enquiries. Simone on 619 903 815 can answer queries about airport runs in English, German or Spanish. And despite the tough times and uncertainties, money is always needed to cope with the continuous flow of abandoned dogs and cats requiring help from the Costa Animal Society. If you could donate a little to help the animals, CAS would be most grateful. TALK TO THE PAW – MAY 2018 ALEX’S URGENT SHELTER REPAIRS APPEAL Wow! Our Shelter looks amazing! Phase 1 and 2 of the re-furbishment of the pens has been totally finished; everywhere is clean and tidy, and bamboo shading has been erected, so we’re all safe from the rains and the harsh sun. It’s fantastic what our volunteer humans have achieved – Thank You! After all those weeks of bad weather, work has started on the third and final phase! This is a HUGE job as
these pens are in very poor condition, and will need lots more work than the others, in fact, 3 pens have been totally demolished already! To protect my ‘mates’ from the harsh summer sun, some of the roofing will need to be lifted and extended to give adequate shade throughout the summer months. There are 7 pens to complete (one of them is my old home!) but we only have enough funds for 3 pens!! Can you help us please? We’re so close to finishing the whole shelter now. Your donations, however small can help us achieve this; or a couple of hours of your time to help with the work. Every little helps, and on behalf of all the dogs here at APA, Thank You so much.
At the time of writing it’s beginning to look as if the weather has finally moved on - from the fairly miserable cold, cloudy and rain filled days that at least more than doubled the amount of water in the La Vinuela reservoir - to a late spring feel. And Tail was so grateful that all changed the day prior to our Spring Dog Show which gave quite a lift to the mood on the day. Turnout was down which didn’t come as a surprise but somewhat surprisingly the takings were only just shy of our average and meant that Tail benefitted as much from the event as the participants enjoyed it. Now we start planning for the autumn show. Never have we seen so many litters of unwanted puppies being abandoned some in the cruelest of ways. Just why is it that those who own dogs don’t actually feel that they have a responsibility to care for them? That includes neutering them, for if it’s a male dog it will go off at the slightest opportunity looking for a bitch on heat, and if a female dog it will prevent her having puppies. In either case it is a win win result.

nestles between the Punta de la Mona to the east and the rock of Cerro Gordo to the west. The bay enjoys shelter from west winds creating mostly crystal-clear waters, and is a popular location for water sports & paragliding. There are numerous beach bars and restaurants serving specialities of the region, including tropical salads, fresh fish or paella. The Marina del Este near La Herradura is tucked betwen Punta de la Mona to the west and Cotobro to the east. It boasts a beautiful port, elegantly designed to incorporate select shops, art galleries, bars and restaurants. This small strip of coast also claims to be the best place to dive between Almeria and Gibraltar, and is home to one of the areas leading diving schools.

Nerja
was once a sleepy fishing village but now the town has a population of over 21,000. The Balcón de Europa is a magnificent promenade that was made famous by King Alfonso XII , who’s statue now takes pride of place at the far end. Close by is the 17th century Church of El Salvador, and the beautiful gardens of Capistrano Playa. There are many beaches to be found either side and in front of the town, including Burriana with its numerous cafés and restaurants. Here too, you can take advantage of the water sports on offer, including water skiing, scuba diving and sailing. Just outside Nerja on the coast road towards Maro is a very impressive aquaduct which used to supply the local sugar factory.

Torre del Mar
is just 30 minutes from Malaga, and is the beach resort of Velez Málaga. Its population of 21,000 grows between June and September to 150,000. The towns attractions have expanded over the last few years to cope with the demand, and now the four kilometres of beach have been enhanced by an impressive promenade, which stretches all the way to Caleta de Vélez, a port providing over 200 berths and offering sailing and water sports. Throughout the summer, there are many Chiringuitos on the beach, serving fresh barbequed fish and ice cold beers. In 2002, Paseo de Larios was pedestrianized, and is now a tranquil promenade, with plenty of pavement cafés and restaurants. At the seafront end of Larios is a line of bars and discos which continue throughout the night on Fridays and Saturdays. The history of Torre is uncertain, but it is thought that it might have been part of an ancient Greek settlement, known as Mainake, which was destroyed by the Carthaginians. Tombs of the Carthaginians were found at the mouth of the river Velez. More recently, it was a small fishing village until major development began in the 1970’s.

Lake Viñuela
is a 15 minute drive from the N340 Autovia, leaving at the junction for Velez Malaga. Head inland along the A356; this direction also leads to numerous inland white villages. The first turning on our map is to Benamocarra, which is sign posted to the right after the last roundabout into Velez Malaga. This road will take you back over the main road and then also on to Iznate, and divides to take you to Almachar, El Borge and Cutar. The second turning off the A356 is on the right (after the Repsol garage) to Trapiche. Continue on the A356, and immediately you will see another junction on the left, sign posted to Benamargosa, Triana, Comares and Cutar. This road will also take you as far as Rio Gordo (for a scenic drive). There is a popular Spanish bar on the corner of this junction called El Cruz. Back on the A356, continue on and you will pass another junction on the right, to Canillas de Aceituno, and finally you will see Lake Vinuela in front of you. Turn right before the lake for Puente de Don Manuel, Alcaucin, Viñuela and Periana; carry straight on for Los Romanes, Rio Gordo and Colmenar.

Frigiliana
encompass 39.74 sq km within which live just over 3,000 people year round. Frigiliana is a popular tourist destination, and because there are many holiday homes here, the population triples during the summer months. The history of Frigiliana dates from prehistoric times. The village has been inhabited by numerous civilisations from the Phoenicians and Romans to the Arabs, who had the greatest impact on the town’s development. During the Christian reconquest, Frigiliana was the site of numerous battles culminating in the famous battle of the Rock of Frigiliana in 1569 which ended in the complete expulsion of the Moorish people. One can learn the history of this struggle by walking through the streets of the historic section where there are a series of twelve ceramic plaques posted about which explain the entire story.
