Visiting the Valley of the Temples in Sicily The Valley of the Temples is one of the most visited sites in Sicily and it’s easy to see why. Like the Roman Forum or Acropolis in Athens, this vast archeological park is a great example of the glory of ancient civilizations whose empires spanned much of the Mediterranean region. I always find these types of places particularly interesting since the ruins we see today are only subtle hints of the grandeur that once was. By Jessica Infantino Trumble

Because of Sicily’s central location, pretty much every group you can think of staked claim to the island at one point or another and the Greeks were no exception. Dating back to 582 BC, the Valley of the Temples was the site of the ancient city of Akragas (once the fourth largest ancient city in the world!), which became one of the most significant Greek colonies in Sicily until it was conquered by the Romans and renamed Agrigentum in 210 BC. Today it’s a

UNESCO World Heritage site that spans more than 5-square miles and boasts some of the best-preserved Greek ruins outside of Greece. A visit to the Valley of the Temples fit nicely into our week-long itinerary in Sicily as we drove from the east to the west coast. We spent several hours exploring the ruins, but the park is so large that you could easily fill an entire day if you arrive early and are interested in also seeing the nearby archeological museum and Kolymberta gardens. Here’s what you need to know to help you plan your visit.

How to Get There The Valley of the Temples is located in Agrigento just south of the modern city. From there you can take bus line 1, 2, 2/ or 3 from the bus or train station to various entrances near the site. The journey is about 15-20 minutes and tickets can be purchased in advance or on board. If you’re traveling by car from other parts of Sicily, the Valley of the Temples is around 2 hours away from major cities including Catania, Palermo and Trapani. There’s a parking lot near the Porta V entrance where you grab a ticket on the way in and 8 THE MARKET PLACE

then pay at the automated vending machine and reinsert on your way out. Also, I highly recommend purchasing your tickets online before you arrive to avoid standing in potentially long lines in the brutal sun (we arrived around mid-day in September and waited for at least 30 minutes – thank goodness for the snack stand selling refreshing lemon granita!).

What to Expect The park is divided into Eastern and Western zones that encompass a collection of seven Doric-style temples and a necropolis set amongst vast blue skies and olive trees. The star attraction is the Temple of Concordia, which in and of itself is one of the best-preserved temples in existence due to reinforcements that were put in place when it was converted to a Christian basilica in the 6th century. Today it stands at the end of the main road towards the eastern end of the park, flanked by a fallen bronze statue of Icarus, the figure in Greek mythology who dared to fly too close to the sun. Other temples are dedicated to Juno, Hercules, Castor and Pollux (Dioscuri), Vulcan, Asclepius and Olympian Zeus. The Temple of Olympian Zeus is perhaps the most evocative area in the park, which to me felt as if we were walking through a graveyard of toppled stones and columns surrounding the temple. It was built to celebrate Akragas’ victory over the Carthaginians and ranks among the largest Doric temples ever built. You can get a sense of its size and scale by the male telamon statues that were intended to support the structure (the female equivalent were called

caryatids, a prime example being the Erechtheion at the Acropolis). There were 38 of these in total, each comprised of 12 stacked blocks measuring 8 metres (26 feet) tall that would have stood on the outside of the temple in between each of its columns. Today these statues are like sleeping giants, still lying where they had fallen centuries ago.

Also Nearby After our visit we made our way back to our car and continued on to our next destination, Scala dei Turchi. Made from soft and chalky limestone shaped by wind and water, this blindingly white cliff steps its way down towards the sparkling blue sea and is nothing short of otherworldly. Its name translates to “Stair of the Turks” after the Arab pirates who used to take shelter here as they raided nearby towns. Today the area is a prime spot for sun seekers. Scala dei Turchi is only 15 minutes west of the Valley of the Temples by car via SS115 and SP68 (keep an eye out for blue parking signs for various lots along the way). After you arrive expect a set of steep wooden stairs down to the beach, then continue across a shallow bay (good water shoes recommended!) to the base of the cliffs. You can escape some of the crowds by walking a little further out along the face of the cliff, which will eventually lead you to another beach area.

Grants for Electric and Hybrid Cars by MoneySaverSpain.com

A new programme with grants for the purchase of electric and plug-in hybrid cars and more has been launched for 2019. Anyone who is legally resident in Spain is eligible to apply, read on for more details.

The Spanish Government has set aside 45 million euros for grants for the purchase of electric and plug-in hybrid cars, electric motorbikes and other vehicles. The scheme is called Plan Moves 2019.

to show that they are up-to-date with their fiscal obligations.

This year the money available will be distributed to each autonomous region in Spain, rather than being controlled centrally. Grants are awarded on a first-come, first-served basis until the end of 2019, or earlier if funds are depleted. Grant amounts are based on the type of vehicle and purchaser (private buyers, selfemployed or companies.

What type of vehicles are included?

Who can request the grant? In order to be eligible you need to be legally resident in Spain and have a NIE number. Self employed people or those with a company in Spain will have to supply additional paperwork

Car dealers should be able to arrange all the paperwork and, depending on the region, they may be able to check whether funding is still available. Cars must be either electric, plug-in hybrids or similar. Check with your local car dealer exactly which models are included.

What discount will I get? Grants of up to 5,500 euros per car are available. The car dealership, or manufacturer, must also provide a direct discount of 1,000 euros. Each Autonomous Community in Spain will have a period of six months to study your paperwork and inform you of the outcome. Your car dealer should be able to help you with the paperwork. The actual amount you receive will depend on the vehicle classification as shown in the Royal Decree 72/2019. This year 100,000 euros is also reserved for grants for the installation of charging points, both public and private, and will

12 THE MARKET PLACE

cover between 30%-40% of the cost. Check with your car dealer for more info.

Essential need-to-knows For this year’s programme for individuals: • You must have a car to scrap that is over 10 years old and • It must have been in your name at least for the last 12 months and • It must have had its ITV (technical inspection document) valid when the Plan Moves 2019 was approved (16 Feb 2019).

How to decide if an electric car is right for you Even though the Government is offering these grants, Spain is still not ready for electric cars in many towns and cities. However things are changing and if you just tend to move around your local area and can charge the car at home, it might be a good idea to think about buying one. The basic questions to ask yourself when considering buying an electric or plug-in hybrid car are: • Do you have access to off-street parking? • Is your daily car usage below 160 km? • Are you thinking of buying a new car anyway? Recharging will cost approximately 3E (depending on your tariff).

First Driving Impressions Audi e-tron, UK Press Event, Wetherby

Nice and local for me for this press event - just up the road in Wetherby... The e-tron is the first car from Audi that is fully electric; no engine, no hybrid, just batteries and electric motors. As with all electric cars it can all get a bit technical, talking in kWh, Kw, range, DC charging, Direct current, CCS (Combined Charging System) Heat Pump, Three Phase power and so on. The e-tron has a 95kWh battery mounted beneath the passenger compartments and it is the lifeblood of this SUV. The battery feeds two electric motors – one per axle – which jointly deliver an output of up to 300Kw. The e-tron has Asynchronous motors that can increase their output for a short period of time. This Boost performance is available for a maximum of eight-seconds. During this time, the output of the front motor increases from 125 to 135 Kw, while the rear motor increases from 140 to 165 Kw, giving an increase of 13%. In terms of acceleration, this goes from a very quick 6.6 seconds, to an extremely quick 5.7 seconds. We drove the e-tron around Wetherby in Yorkshire, and even without using the Boost system the instant power was enough to throw you back in the seat. As with all electric vehicles, the power is there immediately, no lag, or waiting for a bit of action, it 14 THE MARKET PLACE

really is instant. The design of the e-tron is very Audi, taking some styling cues from the recently launched Q8, a bit of Q5, and other popular Audi models. As we walked around it while taking photographs, we had a really good look at it from every angle. It all works perfectly - the large front grille, with its chrome surround and vertical strips, the side view with its lovely lines and some clever metal pressing, and the rear end with the lights that run across the rear door. It does look good from every angle, and it's all in proportion. But it should look great, as Audi have had plenty of practice of designing and producing SUV’s for a number of years now. Audi have also been clever, and wise in making the e-tron look ‘normal’. Just because it is a pure EV, they haven't tried to make it look ‘wacky’ or outrageous. It looks like an Audi, but just happens to be electric. The e-tron, measuring 4,901mm, doesn’t have a lot of competitors: Tesla Model X (5,036mm) and the Jaguar i-PACE (4,682mm). Like all electric vehicles, and stating the obvious, it does need to be charged, on a fairly regular basis. The e-tron has two charging ports, one on

the drivers side is for AC and DC charging, and one on the passenger side is AC only. The small opening doors are on the front wings. It can be charged using domestic plugs, a wallbox or fast DC charging stations at up to 150Kw can recharge to 80% in as little as 30 minutes. My own experience of using home charging is that it is very slow, and using a wallbox not much quicker. With a full charge, the e-tron has a range of up to 240 miles, which when I heard this figure sounded a bit disappointing, I was expecting more. When you compare this to the KIA e-Niro this car, which is smaller, has around a 100 mile range benefit over the Audi. The interior is very modern. It is luxurious, and just oozes quality. Materials used, fit and finish are superb. The only small criticism of the interior is the gear-shift handle, as Audi have moved away from the heavy, clunky and prestigious lever, to a cheaper, lightweight, what seemed plastic square lever, that just didn’t look or feel right, and certainly wasn’t ‘Audi-Haptics’. Out on the roads in Yorkshire, and on an admittedly short test route due to time restrictions, it drove perfectly,

no surprises (though one or two surprises for my passenger when I put my right foot down, and I can’t say exactly what words he used). The e-tron did everything right, it's a real pleasure to drive. It is quick, and like all electric cars, it is extremely quiet. Rear leg room is more than adequate, and there's plenty of shoulder and head room. The boot area is 660-litres with the rear seats up, and this goes up to 1,725 litres with them folded down, compared to the Model X (5seat) at 357 litres and 2,259, and the i-Pace at 505 and 1163 litres. The interior of the e-tron is a very nice place to sit, either as the driver or passengers. The e-tron is full of goodies and high-tech standard equipment, although you could spend a small fortune on some very nice options. This very practical, fullelectric all-wheel drive, with a spacious interior is superb, so clever in every department, and a dream to drive. Prices start from £71,520 OTR (before the OLEV grant reduction) with residual values expected to be very high, as this will be a very popular and sought-after used car for many years to come.

The artists of Gaucin will open their studios to the public for the annual Art Gaucin Open Studios weekends at the end of May and beginning of June, once again inviting visitors to see a wide variety of work by Spanish and foreign artists. The Art Gaucin Open Studios weekends have become a wellknown fixture of the art scene in Andalucia, providing an opportunity to meet the artists, learn more about their work and techniques, and see and buy their paintings, sculptures, prints, photographs and ceramics. The event is set in the pretty village of Gaucin, one of the famous white pueblos near Estepona and Ronda. This year, the Art Gaucin Open Studios will take place over two long weekends – Friday May 24 to Sunday May 26, and Friday May 31 to Sunday June 2. Visitors will have a chance to see many new works by Art Gaucin’s member artists, as well as the paintings, sculptures and installations by this year’s guest artists, Pepe Barroso, Lieuwke Loth, and Karina Zothner. Launched more than a decade ago, Art Gaucin has built up a strong following both locally in Andalucia and overseas. Its long-established members include Jim Rattenbury, whose paintings and sculptures are in several private collections abroad, and Michael Roschlau, former Glasgow School of Art lecturer and artist whose works include lithographs, paintings and intricate clockwork wall sculptures. Art Gaucin’s roster of artists includes painters Joseba Sánchez Zabaleta and Ana Pellón, and photographers Chris Klees and Vivienne Whiffen. There are also several ceramicists and sculptors in the group, including Juan Antonio Sangil, Sebastian Fisher, Catherine Hunter, Rosie Venables, Anna McGrane, and Silvia Franco. With its warren of quiet, pretty streets, Gaucin is a delightful place to explore on foot. It has ancient castle ruins, offers spectacular views across the coast and towards Africa, and provides plenty of places to linger over a coffee, tapas or something more substantial while enjoying those panoramas as the village has several popular and celebrated restaurants. Local artisans will also be showing a selection of jewellery, blankets and other handmade crafts. With the upgrading of the road from Gaucin to the coast, access is faster and smoother – now just 45 minutes from Estepona and 40 minutes from Ronda. For the full list of artists, details of their works and of the Art Gaucin Open Studios event, please visit the website artgaucin.com

Three reasons to buy life insurance A proven product that everyone should protect themselves with. Life insurance is a necessary purchase that has the benefit of giving you and your family peace of mind. There are many different types of cover that can be tailored to suit your needs and lifestyle.

Life insurance not only provides financial protection in the event of death but it is also a savings product that offers benefits that are becoming ever more extensive and customisable, so it is not surprising that, after car and home insurance, it is the third most contracted insurance cover in Spain. The average profile of a person who contracts life insurance is a married male aged between 35 and 44 years old, but it is never too late or early to take out a policy.

1. Arrange a mortgage to buy a house In Spain, six out of ten homes are bought with a mortgage. In this case, it is advisable to take out life insurance because, in case of death or permanent disability of the person who contracted the mortgage, the insurer will take over the payments to the bank and remove your partner or relatives from the economic responsibility that could be difficult to continue with. In fact, with most banks it is a pre-requisite as a guarantee before signing the mortgage. Until recently, banking entities conditioned their mortgage lending with an "obligation" to contract some linked products, such as Life insurance. But since a few years ago, with the approval of the European Parliament of the Mortgage Credit Directive, banks are prohibited by law from linking a mortgage to the purchase of insurance. You only need that your insurance company includes a clause in your policy registering your lending bank as the mortgage beneficiary. In that way, you comply with the request of the bank but you also save money. You could even save a difference of 700 euros as the products offered by the bank can be up to 300% more expensive.

Decorate your home according to the 80/20 Rule

Almost 50% of people only just get to the end of the month with the income they earn. This means there is little spare cash to spend on frivolities. For this reason, when investing in our home we must follow the 80/20 rule, inspired by the Pareto principle, which indicates that 80% of what you spend in your home should be destined to lasting and timeless elements, while the remaining 20% can be invested in smaller, seasonal elements that follow fashions or that can be easily replaced. 80%: Resistant materials for the kitchen The secret to having a long-lived kitchen lies in betting on durable materials, both on the counter top, kitchen fascias and on the furniture itself. One of the most important investments is when choosing a counter top. If you are looking for a resistant material and one that does not involve a large outlay, one option to value is granite. Also, marble and quartz are a bit more expensive but they are slightly more durable. As for the colour, it is better to choose neutral tones, colours that are timeless and allow you to personalise the rest of the kitchen with various elements such as furniture or textiles. Both materials and colour will ensure that your kitchen is positioned in that 80% of elements that will last over time.

80%: A practical bathroom The bathroom is one of the rooms of the house that is used the most and 20 THE MARKET PLACE

that over the years can be susceptible to a bit of wear and tear. The secret to making the most of it and ensuring its durability, and to not splash out loads of money, is to ensure that it is functional and hard wearing. Renovations that will help achieve this are to change the bathtub for a shower, and tiling the shower and wet areas of the bathroom. The shower will increase the space, improve safety and create a more functional and modern space. On the other hand, when tiling the shower and wet areas, the walls and the floor will be protected from the appearance of humidity continued on page 22

and the subsequent disbursement that involves removing them and repainting the room. As for materials, ceramic tiles are the most economical option, but stoneware is more resistant.

80%: The Sofa is an important decision In a living room, the sofa is one of the most important pieces. That is because it takes up a lot of space and is the first thing you notice in the room and it will attract a lot of attention. Its quality must also be up to par. Think that it is a piece of furniture that is used daily and that, therefore, will be exposed to lots of wear. Before buying a sofa, consciously measure the space and think about the use you are going to give it. Maybe you’re interested in a reclining sofa or a chaise longue. Choose the material in relation to the use and members of the household. If you have children or animals, a sofa with covers will be the most appropriate.

80%: Underfloor heating and parquet An investment that works twice is to take advantage of the renovation of the floor to update the heating system, through underfloor heating. In addition to giving a new and cozy air through a wooden floor (or similar, laminated flooring or vinyl floor ), you will get the heating circulating under your feet, creating a warm and welcoming home to enjoy. It’s not the cheapest reform in the world, but once you’ve tried it, you cannot go back.

20%: Give life to the walls An interesting point is that of the walls. Although the quality of the painting must be good to withstand dirty hands touching them, it is advisable to paint every 2 or 3 years. This means that painting is something you can change pretty quickly and you can do yourself to revamp your home. Therefore, spending must be kept to a budget as it is something we address more often particularly

when fashions change. In addition, the walls can also be decorated with small elements that give life and that are closer to aesthetics and trends than to longevity. Decorative films, paintings, compositions with family photos or even wallpapers and vinyls are all easily replaceable at any given time.

20%: Textiles Textiles are easy to replace but they also have an incredible impact and power when it comes to customising our homes. Covers for sofas, cushions or rugs. Investing in these types of textiles will not cost you too much, and the level of personalization that is provided can be huge. Think Ikea cushion covers, perhaps curtains and rugs - they bring a new design out every season and it always makes me want to change the living room!

The candidate for the PP of Malaga Carolina Espana has claimed that the main focus of the PP party is to accelerate the works of the water treatment plant in Nerja. She added that for the party it is a priority project. Along with the PP candidate for Nerja, Jose Alberto Armijo, Espana has reported that the PP Party promoted the works at the Nerja treatment plant during the government of Mariano Rajoy, considering that it's implementation is essential for a tourist municipality like Nerja. The PP candidate also said that the operation has been a disaster under the PSOE socialist party and the project has been at a standstill since they took over. Carolina Espana is requesting support from the people for the imminent elections saying, "We are the only party that ensures a reduction in taxes and we are willing to eliminate the tax on donations and successions." She continued, "The Popular Party has always known how to get Spain out of the most difficult times," noting that, "the disastrous management of the PSOE and Mr Sanchez are leading the country into a new era of crisis and job losses.

The Arts Society Nerja (Formerly Nerja NADFAS)

FOREIGNERS IN LONDON 1520-1677: THE ARTISTS THAT CHANGED THE COURSE OF BRITISH ART

Tuesday 14th May 2019 at the Cultural Centre (Casa Cultura) Calle Granada, Nerja. 6pm (Doors open at 5pm and tickets only available on the night) Visitors are most welcome. Entrance e10 (Members of other The Arts Societies e5) A full illustrated lecture in English by Leslie Primo MA BA. Sponsored by Verano Azul Nerja. About Leslie Primo

Why were foreigner painters preferred by the aristocracy in London to native-born English painters, why did foreigners come in the first place, what was their motivation, and what was the impact of foreigners in London on English art and art practise? The lecture will look at the various formats and uses of art, tracing foreign artists from the Tudor period through to the Renaissance and Baroque, looking at their origins and how they came to work in England. It will examine the contributions of artists such as Holbein, Gerrit van Honthorst, Marcus Gheeraerts the younger, Lucas and Susanna Horenbout, Isaac Oliver, Paulus van Somer, van Dyck, Peter Lely, and Rubens. This lecture will look at how these artists influenced the British School of painting and assess their legacy.

Club Nerja Rugby Club Nerja Rugby has ended its most successful league season in its seven-year history. They finished as winners of the Andalusian Second Division Eastern Section.

They then went into the Andalusian playoffs against near neighbours Malaga. The first league of the quarter-final was scheduled for 31st March on which date there was an issue with player availability. Efforts to re-arrange the game were unsuccessful. They then went into the game missing a number of key players and with others playing out of position. Malaga scored five tries to open a 31-point gap in the first half but Nerja responded with a try. They then showed their potential by restricting the opponents to two penalties in the

second half but went down 5-37. The 32-point gap seemed difficult, but not impossible, to close in the return leg a week later. Nerja ran in seven tries in their 43-point total but errors allowed Malaga to respond with 18 points so Nerja failed to tie the fixture by only seven points. Club Nerja Rugby have a number of friendlies against visiting clubs in May. Details of these games will be published on the CNR Facebook page.

Romeria San Isidro

Colour Run in Torre del Mar

15th May 2019

Legend has it that this poor agricultural worker was extremely generous and kind. So each year he is remembered by the town staging a "Romeria" which is where a procession of people, horses, floats etc. follow the oxen driven figure of San Isidro from the Balcon de Europa right up to the entrance to the caves of Nerja. This takes a few hours with people lining the streets on the way to capture photos of the spectacular event. Nerja's people get dressed up in their finest traditional outfits (flamenco dresses for the women and waistcoats for the men) and many men are on horseback with ladies seated sidesaddle on the back. Bars and restaurants sponsor the various floats in the procession which are often pulled by mules or donkeys, (keeping with the agricultural theme) although these days there seem to be a number of tractors included too. Each year the atmosphere is one of fun and laughter where everyone seems to be relaxed and people really let their hair down for a good old celebration!

Exhibition van gogh Alive

The Colour Run that should have taken place in April was rescheduled to now take place on the 5th May 2019. You can go and watch the runners/walkers complete the course which will start on the beach opposite the band stand in Torre. A great atmosphere, music and festivities too.

Ruta de Tapa in Nerja

Available until June 9th in Malaga Port. Open Sunday to Thursday 10am to 8pm and Friday and Saturday from 10am to 10pm.

This exhibition has 40 projectors on giant screens which immerse the visitor in the work of Vincent Van Gogh's work. This is a unique viewing experience, one like which you will have never seen before, definitely a must see. Entry costs 12 euros for adults and 9 euros for children and 10 euros for over 65s and students. Tickets can be purchased online or on the door.

Only Fools and Horses Dining Experience. Only Fools and Horses Dining Experience. At the Salon del Mar - Torre del Mar. Sunday 5th May. Only a few places remaining. 35 Euros per person, 3 course menu. From 7.30pm So this is the show that is brought to you by the people behind the worldwide smash hit, Faulty Towers Dining Experience. This experience transports people back to the Nags Head to meet the pride of Peckham in a night of wheeling and dealing and eating. The fun starts from the moment you join the Trotters and their friends for a knees up. A 3 course meal at the "Nags Head" and all the fun of the Trotters family... you know it makes sense! Tel: 952 64 49 52 - for bookings. 30 THE MARKET PLACE

Just as the Tapas run finishes in Torre del Mar, don't worry another one begins and this time in our home town of Nerja. Fantastic I hear you say! Everybody loves a tapas route around town! The price is really cheap at just 1.80 euros for a beer and a tasty morsel. It is also a family friendly affair with much more emphasis being placed on the tapa than the beer. All the participating restaurants/bars are competing to prepare the best and most popular tapa. Will it be La Salamandra again? Who knows, but you can pick up your tapas route passport at participating restaurants/ bars and if you get it stamped at 10 of them you can then be entered into the free prize draw. The Tapas Route will finish on Sunday 19th May. So pop in at one of the following : La Joya, Restaurante Iberico, Starr Tapas, Parador Nerja, Cafe Bar La Rambla, Restaurante MarBella, La Plaza, Cafe Bar Ole Ole, Cafe Grease, Aquarium, Meson Boni, La Salamandra, Meson Asador, La Biznaga, Cafe Cristo, Sentir Nerja, Spiral, La Marina, Hermes, Restaurante Sal y Pimienta, La Estacion, El Picoteo de El Molino, Pescaderia Artesano, Cafeteria Marissal.

Health, Body & Soul Love your life more with advice on how to lead a healthy lifestyle

The new study the billion dollar supplements industry doesn't want you to see Skimmed milk vs Almond milk: Which is healthier?

When we were little, cow’s milk was the no-nonsense staple that nobody thought twice about. Fast forward to 2019 and the milk fridge at your local supermarket seems to expand every time you visit it, which makes the seemingly simple task of buying milk more and more confusing. Two of the most common types of milk often asked about are regular skimmed milk and almond ‘milk’. The former being full of sugar, and the latter being sooo much better for you – right?! Well, your personal trainer might say so, but that’s not necessarily true. On face value, I can see why people may think almond milk is healthier. It’s a lighter option made with the goodness of nuts. But once you dig a little deeper, the story isn’t what it seems. While almond milk has a similar energy content to skimmed cow’s milk, it has far less protein, which helps you to feel full and is key for muscle growth. Almond milk is also lacking in many of the key micronutrients found in milk, although you can get some with added calcium – so it’s highly advisable to check the label and look for at least 100mg calcium per 100ml. What’s more, almond milk can contribute to your intake of added sugars if you’re buying a sweetened variety, whereas the sugar in cow’s milk is completely natural and nothing to fret about. All in all, unless you’re allergic or intolerant to dairy, I’d always recommend reduced-fat cow’s milk over the kind made from almonds.

A banana has approximately 30% of your daily recommended intake of vitamin B6 34 THE MARKET PLACE

A new study has found that taking daily vitamins may not be doing you as much good as you hoped - and is certainly no substitute for eating fresh, nutritious foods. The study, led by researchers at Tufts University and conducted over the course of a decade, analysed the results from 30,000 participants to reveal that while certain vitamins and minerals could help you live longer as we have been led to believe, these vitamins and minerals need to be ingested by consuming foods that contain them – not supplements. The findings, which were published in the Annals of Internal Medicine, are yet more evidence to support the argument that taking supplemental vitamins and minerals—either as a single pill or in multivitamin form— offers no discernible benefits for an individual in terms of lengthening life span. Of the participants who took part in the study, more than half said

they took supplements regularly, with the most common being vitamins C, D, and E, as well as calcium and magnesium. Nearly 40 per cent said they took multivitamins. The study authors also suggested that any previous links between taking supplements and improved health could, in fact, be a myth based on the lifestyle of the people who take the supplements in the first place. Our results and those of others suggest that supplement users have higher levels of education and income and a healthier lifestyle overall than non users, they wrote. Therefore, “the apparent association between supplement use and lower mortality may reflect confounding by higher socioeconomic status and healthy lifestyle factors that are known to reduce mortality.” In yet more unwelcome news for the industry, the study also found that high doses of calcium (1,000 mg or more per day) in supplements was linked to a higher cancer mortality rate in individuals who participated in the study. This same link was not found in foods that contained similar levels of calcium. While the researchers concluded that more research into the use of supplements is needed before we push away the vitamin pills and stop taking supplements for good, they did say that a healthy, balanced diet should still be the number one aim for anyone looking to live a healthy (and long) life: “although adequate nutrient intake from foods could contribute to reduced risk for death, excess intake from supplements might increase mortality.”

You've probably been using hand sanitiser wrong your whole life A small squeeze of hand sanitiser into your palm followed by a quick rub together of your hands, and you’re 99.9 per cent germ free… or so we thought. According to a new study conducted by the University Hospital Basel, we’ve been applying hand sanitiser all wrong, suggesting it only proves effective if thoroughly applied for 15 seconds. While this may sound a little absurd, it’s half as complicated as the World Health Organisation’s (WHO) advice, which recommends applying the gel in a complicated six-step, 30-second process. The research found 15 seconds is just as effective as 30 in reducing bacterial counts. To investigate whether this lengthy process is necessary, the team of researchers asked 20 volunteers aged 18-51 to apply hand sanitiser via four techniques. The results found both 15-second processes (the second and fourth methods) were as effective at reducing bacterial counts as the 30-second rubs (first and third methods). The researchers hope the findings will help provide positive information for healthcare workers.

Are you ready for summer?

Summer is fast approaching and whilst the saying goes - 'summer bodies are made in winter' - the fixation on being 'beach body ready' isn't always the main thing we should be focusing on. Of course, everyone wants to look their best in a bikini/swimming costume/ swimming trunks/man-kini - or whatever you'd like to wear around by the beach or the pool. There are many ways you can look and feel great this summer, or before your holiday away:

Book yourself in for a full body exfoliation One of the most relaxing treatments you can book in for at a salon or spa! Most people tend to not properly exfoliate their skin often enough, and especially not all over their body! So why not treat yourself and book in for a full body scrub and let your therapist make you look and feel glowing! A great way to prepare your skin before a holiday too, as the treatment involves gently removing the dead skin cells from your surface layer to make way for newer skin cells, which in turn will make your skin look brighter. The treatment finishes off with a hydrating moisture lotion to lock in your softer skin and make you feel smooth as a baby's bum!

Beauty by Katie - Full body exfoliating treatment - 18 euros

Start applying a gradual tan Sometimes during those first early days of summer, we feel our skin can be somewhat on the pale side....so start by prepping your skin and body for the 36 THE MARKET PLACE

beach by applying a gradual tanning lotion or moisturiser so there is not that initial shock and embarrassment at the start of summer! Alternatively, before a holiday you can start by having a light spray tan to build up your confidence before you hit the beach. Please remember, any tanning products or tanning treatments do not protect your skin from the sun, so you will still need to wear SPF - even with a glowing tan!

Beauty by Katie - Spray Tan treatment - from 22.50 euros

Hair removal Whichever way you do it, most of us like to have a (mostly) hair free body! Make sure before you hit the sun/sea/ swimming pool, that if you have any waxing treatments, you allow your skin at least 24-48 hours before you expose the area to reduce any risk of sensitivity! The sun and chlorine etc can make for an uncomfortable day at the beach if you have freshly waxed your skin, as the pores in the skin will still be open and you will need some time to reduce the redness in your skin after a fresh wax! Once you’re vacation starts, remember to

use sunscreen! Hair-free skin that’s just been exfoliated with wax can be more prone to sunburn so slather on that SPF to protect your skin from sun damage.

Beauty by Katie waxing treatments - from eyebrows to legs, to bikini to underarms!

Prep those toes! A beautifully painted polish always makes you feel good, especially as the brighter weather makes more of a regular appearance! A bright, bold colour on the toes lifts your mood and makes you feel more inclined to show off your feet!

Beauty by Katie pedicure treatments - start from 15 euros

TECH - Best Stylish Smart Watches The days of smart watches looking ugly or overly sporty are long over. There are increasingly stylish models available including Withings Steel HR Sport smaller ones for slender Ever since their Activite Pop Watch wrists and even ones with Withings has been making some of the analogue faces just like a best looking wearables on the market. The Steel HR Sport epitomises this normal watch. tradition with a classic analog watchface and subtle smartwatch integration. The watch measures 40mm wide and 13mm thick and is only 49grams. The watch has 30 different sport modes, these can be a little difficult to view on the actual watch. Connected GPS is another feature of the Withings smart watch, the watch offloads it to your smart phone. There is also a sleep tracker which was one of our favourite features as it gave you a sleep score. The battery is pretty good at 25 days of battery life. You can also sleep in it, swim in it, run with it and it is very comfortable, you don't know it is there. If you are looking for a hybrid watch this should be top of your list.

Skagen Falster 2 So the Skagen Falster 2 is probably the most stylish smart watch on the market. Ideal for Android users looking for smart and basic fitness features. You can take calls, reply to texts, get social notifications and control music. It has contactless payment and Google Assistant too. Calorie tracking isn't always accurate and it needs frequent charging. But if you want great design and a high end watch with the benefits of tracking with it's nice display, then this is the watch for you!

Fossil Q Venture HR

Google Pixel 3

Fossil have also launched their latest smartwatch in recent months with the Q Venture HR. This one packs a heart rate monitor but there is also GPS and NFC chip for contactless payments. What is a little unfortunate is the processing power - it's a snapdragon wear 2100, when qualcomm have already unveiled their snapdragon wear 3100. This fourth edition watch is smaller than its predecessor but it is a good size at 40mm and 13mm thick. Also if you like a bit of bling (like me) then this one looks great, because whilst having a bit of bling it is still quite subtle. I do recommend going for the darker watch strap or stainless steel, I found the blush leather one to stain quite easily. Even though the Q Venture HR includes the snapdragon wear 2100 chipset, I have not run into too many issues with performance. Apps load easily and quickly and the only slow bit was sometimes the play store. With 4GB of storage you can also store music on the watch if you like. 38 THE MARKET PLACE

Exhibition - Miradas de al Andalus by Miguel Angel Lopez The exhibition at the Nerja Museum which will remain until June 30 in the Ana María Márquez exhibition hall, offers a tour, through 34 paintings and 3 ceramics, through different architectural landscapes that evoke the Andalusian territory in the past of the Iberian Peninsula, and by

Morocco, as well as people and objects that evoke the way of life of both worlds. This is the second exhibition proposed by the Nerja cultural space in 2019, which is included in an annual program that includes five exhibitions in total. With 'Miradas de alAndalus', the Nerja Museum intends to link the vestiges and memories of al-Andalus that remain permanent in the landscape and the idiosyncrasy of much of Spain, with those vestiges and ways of living that are still valid in Morocco and that, ultimately, is heir to the Andalusian past. This exhibition is not accidental, since it has the purpose of vindicating the medieval past of the locality with a current look, and to find again two Jaenans in Nerja, the geographer and writer Ibn Sacid, of the XIIIth century , who visited frequently Niriya , name of Nerja in Arabic, and to whom he dedicated a poem, and Miguel Ángel Expósito, an artist who has masterfully captured the magic of al-Andalus that still persists in North Africa and Spain.

It is, therefore, a show where yesterday and today come together to show us that we are the result of a past that never disappears.

Aries ( 21 March – 19 April )

Libra ( 23 September – 22 October )

Taurus ( 20 April – 20 May )

Scorpio ( 23 October – 21 November )

Aggressive communication is the keyword for this month, as you go all out to promote your business ventures or professional skills.. This vigorous and energetic campaign will prove to be a boon for career minded aries. Strong energy for new beginnings in close relationships is with you. Stimulating changes in the realms of friendships, group connections and business plans are on the horizon. It is a good month concerning professional life. You would be enjoying yourselves. Taking life at its own pace, you will also not insist on your own agenda at home too. Love ties are coming up for review, and the need to put the past behind you becomes insistent. Some of you will be determining whether a romantic relationship is strong enough to be brought forward.

Gemini ( 21 May – 20 June)

Your inspiration for new knowledge that you might want to obtain in the course of your experiments and researches will increase. For those in business, this is a financially rewarding period. Some business contacts will mature into close personal associations with friendship and open style of communication fast-forwarding this arrangement. You will end the month on a high with rainbowhued hopes of a great financial future.

Cancer ( 21 June – 22 July )

Public engagements, new business associations, and renewed professional contracts top this month.. A few agreements or documents connected to profession will also be revisited or redrawn, with fresh set of opportunities and possibilities. It is a month of intense emotional churning leading to sea-change in the way you have been viewing and approaching your intimate personal life. Adventure, travel, and higher learning call to you.

Leo ( 23 July – 22 August )

It’s a great time for making new resolutions. Your desire to learn, share ideas, and improve your skills is powerful. Moneywise, more expenditure than income is indicated this month. Conversations with friends and acquaintances can be eye-opening, propelling you along a new path of discovery. This month would be beneficial in helping transform fledgling romances into potential commitments and contractual relationships.

Virgo ( 23 August – 22 September )

You are making exiting new contacts and reconnecting with old friends. You are keen on sharing your personal philosophies with others and are especially intrigued with other points of view. Restlessness with routine is sure to get you out and about. Healthwise, you will be in top form, brimming with vitality. Singles may be meeting new romantic interests or experiencing a rejuvenation of romance in existing relationships. 42 THE MARKET PLACE

Energy for improving your skills and getting projects going runs extremely high this month, and taking some extra time to tend to projects that have been on hold will be fulfilling. You may do tight-rope walking, balancing a busy work front and demanding home life. You will also be involved with hectic behind the scene activities and sorting out irritants and frictions that would unexpectedly crop up in the relationships. You open this month’s balance sheet with carry forwards from last month. This will exclusively apply to finance and family relationships. Some aspects of financial dealings may have to be re-worked with partners and collaborators. Straightening out domestic problems will also be necessary, and this sets the stage for pleasant relations with family and a more organized home life in the second half of the month.

Sagittarius ( 22 November -21 December )

This is a feel-good time for you, when you feel the need to make a fresh start. You will also introspect and reflect on minor irritants faced at home and try sorting out personal issues. A surprising new friendship could develop this month. Slowing down, going down-memory-lane, being retrospective, introspective and reflective - these can sum up your internal journey for this month.

Capricorn ( 22 December – 19 January ) You are setting your sights on the future instead of worrying about the past, and setting your sights high! There may be unexpected events that free you from confining situations. Financial concerns and mix-ups lift by mid-month, when a new budget will be helpful. Relationships will experience ebb and flow and romantic notions and ideas will be replaced by cool logic and pragmatism.

Aquarius ( 20 January – 18 February )

Motivation to make money is strong this month, The work you do could find financial support or your work may be related to supporting others’ talents and resources. The latter part of the month will find the moody Aquarians shying from friendly interactions and staying away from social engagements. Peace will reign supreme and you will enjoy the company of your family and friends over food, fun and frolic.

Pisces ( 19 February – 20 March )

New ideas are abundant, and your energy levels run high. Some form of tug of war when it comes to finances could be irksome but clearing up financial matters will do wonders for your outlook. Academically inclined Pisceans, pursuing courses on public relations, communications, and media management will perform well and come out with flying colours. Home life will remain animated, busy, and involving.

Café del Mundo The name of Café del Mundo goes back to the legendary Café Cantante, founded in Seville in 1842. It comprises two geniuses of the classical guitar. Through a virtuoso musical dialogue they combine the explosive fire and archaic power of Flamenco with the delicacy and refinement of lyric expression. Their music envelops you, excites you, sends you dreaming, shakes you, sweeps you along. Currently the duo are recording a new CD at the world-famous Abbey Road studios in London. So far they have released six CDs and they put on more than 120 concerts per year. After their recent tour of the UK, where they swept away an enthusiastic public, Café del Mundo are making a brief stopover in Andalucía, giving four concerts - Granada 28th May & 2nd June, Vejer de la Frontera 31st May, Nerja 29th May at the Culture Centre, Villa de Nerja.

Martin has since been training newly qualified dentists in endodontics and provides courses for more experienced dentists wishing to improve their endodontic skills. For the last several years he has been dividing his time between surgeries in Southend, Essex and London’s Harley Street.

Gochujang Stir Fried Brussel Sprouts So here is a Pegan recipe for you to try! If you're into Brussel sprouts, you'll love this dish because they're stir fried to golden brown perfection and coated in the most savoury, spicy, amazing sauce ever.

PREPARATION (serves - 4) 1) Prepare sauce Gochujang sauce by adding, sesame oil, coconut aminos, maple syrup, sea salt and chilli sauce to a small mixing bowl and mix to combine. Taste and adjust flavour as needed, adding more chilli sauce for heat, maple syrup for sweetness or coconut aminos for depth of flavour. Set aside. 2) Make sure your brussel sprouts are rinsed, dried and halved and any large stem portions are removed. 3) Heat a large cast iron pan over a medium heat. Depending on the size of the pan you may need to cook your brussels in two batches so they get evenly cooked and don't crowd the pan. 4) Once hot, add sesame or avocado oil to the pan and brussel sprouts. Season with the coconut aminos and toss to combine. Then evenly spread the brussels in the pan so each one is touching the surface of the pan. 5) Cover and cook for 2 minutes. Then remove the lid and stir fry uncovered for 2 minutes more stiring occasionally to brown all sides. 6) Once the sprouts appear caramelized, add the sliced green onion and the prepared sauce and stir fry for 1-2 minutes to coat and caramelize the sprouts even more. Then turn off the heat and serve with the crushed cashews. 48 THE MARKET PLACE

FOUR GINGER LADS

Rosie’s rehoming story is perhaps one of the quickest in the history of the Costa Animal Society (CAS) but it also highlights an annual problem that CAS and other animal charities have to deal with each spring. Rosie was only six weeks old when she was found wandering alone and vulnerable on the streets of the Capistrano/Fuente del Baden area of Nerja early last month. She was quickly examined by a vet and found to be too young to get her first puppy vaccinations but was otherwise in good health despite being covered in fleas for which she received treatment.

These lovely male kittens were taken in by CAS and christened John, Paul, Honey was found in April on the road to George, and The Other Guy. With the help of a CAS volunteer, two local Torrox Costa near Urb. Punta Lara. Costa Animal Society (CAS) advertised her as a found dog for a few weeks in CAS SHOP NEWS the hope that her owner would come forward but no one has. CAS is now looking to find a new home for this lovely young dog. Honey gets along well with other dogs and would make a wonderful addition to any family.

Each spring our local animal societies see a dramatic rise in the amount of unwanted puppies and kittens being born because there are too many unneutered animals in our area. This increase puts a real strain on resources as the charities struggle to cover the cost of boarding and providing vet treatment for these abandoned pets. The time volunteers spend helping, the homes fosterers provide to keep animals safe and the donations given to help cover costs are always vital to our animal charities but become even more critical in these times of need. 50 THE MARKET PLACE

Examples of costs incurred include: food, blood tests, neutering, vaccinations, treatment for worms, fleas and ticks, microchipping and providing the cats with passports for rehoming abroad. If foster homes cannot be found, kenneling costs can quickly escalate. Thus, the adding machine tape runs on and on. La Herradura

nestles between the Punta de la Mona to the east and the rock of Cerro Gordo to the west. The bay enjoys shelter from west winds creating mostly crystal-clear waters, and is a popular location for water sports & paragliding. There are numerous beach bars and restaurants serving specialities of the region, including tropical salads, fresh fish or paella. The Marina del Este near La Herradura is tucked betwen Punta de la Mona to the west and Cotobro to the east. It boasts a beautiful port, elegantly designed to incorporate select shops, art galleries, bars and restaurants. This small strip of coast also claims to be the best place to dive between Almeria and Gibraltar, and is home to one of the areas leading diving schools.

Nerja

was once a sleepy fishing village but now the town has a population of over 21,000. The Balcón de Europa is a magnificent promenade that was made famous by King Alfonso XII , who’s statue now takes pride of place at the far end. Close by is the 17th century Church of El Salvador, and the beautiful gardens of Capistrano Playa. There are many beaches to be found either side and in front of the town, including Burriana with its numerous cafés and restaurants. Here too, you can take advantage of the water sports on offer, including water skiing, scuba diving and sailing. Just outside Nerja on the coast road towards Maro is a very impressive aquaduct which used to supply the local sugar factory.

Torre del Mar

is just 30 minutes from Malaga, and is the beach resort of Velez Málaga. Its population of 21,000 grows between June and September to 150,000. The towns attractions have expanded over the last few years to cope with the demand, and now the four kilometres of beach have been enhanced by an impressive promenade, which stretches all the way to Caleta de Vélez, a port providing over 200 berths and offering sailing and water sports. Throughout the summer, there are many Chiringuitos on the beach, serving fresh barbequed fish and ice cold beers. In 2002, Paseo de Larios was pedestrianized, and is now a tranquil promenade, with plenty of pavement cafés and restaurants. At the seafront end of Larios is a line of bars and discos which continue throughout the night on Fridays and Saturdays. The history of Torre is uncertain, but it is thought that it might have been part of an ancient Greek settlement, known as Mainake, which was destroyed by the Carthaginians. Tombs of the Carthaginians were found at the mouth of the river Velez. More recently, it was a small fishing village until major development began in the 1970’s.

is a 15 minute drive from the N340 Autovia, leaving at the junction for Velez Malaga. Head inland along the A356; this direction also leads to numerous inland white villages. The first turning on our map is to Benamocarra, which is sign posted to the right after the last roundabout into Velez Malaga. This road will take you back over the main road and then also on to Iznate, and divides to take you to Almachar, El Borge and Cutar. The second turning off the A356 is on the right (after the Repsol garage) to Trapiche. Continue on the A356, and immediately you will see another junction on the left, sign posted to Benamargosa, Triana, Comares and Cutar. This road will also take you as far as Rio Gordo (for a scenic drive). There is a popular Spanish bar on the corner of this junction called El Cruz. Back on the A356, continue on and you will pass another junction on the right, to Canillas de Aceituno, and finally you will see Lake Vinuela in front of you. Turn right before the lake for Puente de Don Manuel, Alcaucin, Viñuela and Periana; carry straight on for Los Romanes, Rio Gordo and Colmenar.

Frigiliana

encompass 39.74 sq km within which live just over 3,000 people year round. Frigiliana is a popular tourist destination, and because there are many holiday homes here, the population triples during the summer months. The history of Frigiliana dates from prehistoric times. The village has been inhabited by numerous civilisations from the Phoenicians and Romans to the Arabs, who had the greatest impact on the town’s development. During the Christian reconquest, Frigiliana was the site of numerous battles culminating in the famous battle of the Rock of Frigiliana in 1569 which ended in the complete expulsion of the Moorish people. One can learn the history of this struggle by walking through the streets of the historic section where there are a series of twelve ceramic plaques posted about which explain the entire story.
