tourism purposes. Rentals let out to the same person for more than 2 months are exempt from the law. The councillor involved confirmed that the new law has been designed to offer more protection to landlords and renters and that the conditions will guarantee a higher degree of quality.

Spain’s ‘golden opportunity’ following Brexit

Foreign buyers purchased a total of 10,145 homes in Málaga province last year, surpassing the pre-crisis level of 9,595 in 2007, according to data from the Public Works Ministry Nearly 40% of the 24,766 homes sold in the province in 2015 were bought by foreigners, a slightly higher percentage than the previous year. However, foreigners’ weight in the market is much higher now than before the property crash; in 2007 foreigners purchased around a quarter of all homes sold. Most of the foreign buyers were already resident in Spain, totalling 8,337 compared to 1,288 non-residents. In both cases, the figures were up by between 10% and 11% from 2014, showing somewhat higher growth than overall home sales in the province, which were up 7.9%. Nationally, total home sales were up by 9.8% last year to 401,281.

Tourist rental decree discussed in Velez Malaga

If the UK leaves the EU, Spain would seek a special relationship with the US, according to the country’s Foreign Affairs minister. In a recent radio interview, José Manuel García-Margallo said that Spain would have a “golden opportunity” to be the “privileged partner” for the United States in Europe.

He stressed the importance of the so-called 'Brexit' to Spain, adding that if Britain exited from the EU, it would permit an even closer relationship between Madrid and Washington. The two countries are already close with almost a fifth of the US population speaking Spanish and following visits by King Felipe and Queen Letizia, as well as the minister himself, last September. However, García-Margallo made it clear he does not want the British people to vote to leave. “God forbid,” he said, but warned that if the leave campaign is successful, it should not be interpreted as the beginning of the “thaw” of the European project.

A recent conference in Viñuela, Axarquia, organised by a local Breast Cancer Association, the Town Hall, Area Sanitaria de la Axarquia and the medical school in Malaga has been attended by more than 50 people and aims to promote healthy living whilst recovering from breast cancer. The seminar is the first of a series of conferences which will allow people to share their experiences of living with breast cancer and discuss innovations and side effects of cancer treatment. Breast cancer is the primary cause of death by tumour in women in all western countries, but survival rate is 90% if it is diagnosed early. Mammograms are used in Andalucia between the ages of 50 and 69 to try to detect breast cancer early and stop unnecessary deaths. There are now 58 mammogram units in the province, 22 are permanent, 5 are mobile and 31 are located within hospitals.

The castle in Salobreña will open to the public once again. The Castillo de la Arabic will open but only certain parts of it because workers are still studying recently discovered archaeological remains. Archaeological research began in 2014, which led to the discovery of a large Turkish bath, possibly linked to the Nasrid dynasty. The visiting hours had to be reduced while the research was taking place and last October the castle had to close due to storms and rough seas. Now the castle will open its doors part time, and full time after the restoration work is complete.

Property Feature Tips to save on the electricity bill In order to save on the electricity bill it is not necessary to live with only the light from romantic candles. To make efficient use of energy, follow these easy tricks. You will not just enjoy monetary savings, but will also be helping to protect the environment, so the victory will be twice as sweet. Harnessing Daylight & Smart Decoration The first trick we suggest may seem obvious, but it is not. Efficient use of electrical energy includes making the most of natural light. If you are planning a reform, designate as much space as possible to windows or skylights. Any window however small may contribute to more light, and therefore, make less use of electricity. And if you want to maximize the brightness of the environment, paint the walls in light colours, leaving the opaque or dark colours for accents in decoration like chairs, curtains, mirrors or pictures. Mirrors need to be strategically placed to have recourse to enhance the entry of light.

Power adjustable intensity and light systems There are several resources on the market that allow us to save light and in most cases, it pays to make a small initial investment and then enjoy the results. Two good ideas for interior and exterior are to use regulators. On the one hand, there are the dimmers, which can reduce the light output of each lamp. Furthermore, the regulators will turn lights on and off, for example by using motion detection. As well as saving money on electricity you will be keeping your home more secure in the process.

Efficient heating We currently have at our disposal several alternatives to electric heating, an option that often can be somewhat costly. Gas stoves with adjustable thermostats and pellet stoves are very fashionable, they look great and are also very cost effective.

Pellet Stoves Pellet stoves require less power to heat up than stoves using other fuel methods, they also rank high in the attractiveness stakes and would make a welcome addition to any home. In terms of efficiency pellet stoves can be turned on and off at the flick of a switch, are totally programmable and thermostatically controlled. You also have the satisfaction of knowing that you are heating your home in an environmentally responsible way using a low carbon fuel. 12 THE MARKET PLACE

The mystique of the US Masters is like no other golf tournament. Augusta National Golf Club is the most pristine and manicured golf property on the planet. The tradition of the tournament speaks for itself as it is the only Major that is played on the same golf course year after year. The fact that it was founded by one of the greatest to ever play the game, Bobby Jones, makes it that much more prestigious. Jones retired from golf in 1930 after achieving what no other golfer has been able to do since, capturing the Grand Slam; that is, winning all four majors in one year. Back then, the Grand Slam consisted of The U.S. Open, The Open Championship, The U.S. Amateur, and The British Amateur. He was 28. Even though he retired from competitive golf at what seemed to be his prime, Mr. Jones was not done giving to the game he loved so dearly. He had a vision of a private club and an exclusive annual invitational, so he and Clifford Roberts set out to create Augusta National amidst Out 3,725 yds par 36 In 3,710 yds, par 36 a depression that was closing many other golf courses of Total 7,435 yards, par 72 the time.

The yardages of every hole at Augusta have been rounded to end in a 0 or 5. Course designer Clifford Roberts didn't believe an exact yardage was necessary, as the pin and tee positions are forever being altered. The tournament was not played during the years 1943, 1944 and 1945 because of World War II. To help with the war effort, turkey and cattle were raised on the Augusta National Grounds. Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus and Senior PGA Tour player John Harris are the only pro golfers who are Augusta National Golf Club members.

Their vision was to establish a national membership for the club. They took a $70,000 option on a 365-acre property called Fruitland Nurseries in Augusta, Ga. Jones and Alistair Mackenzie of Scotland designed the course. Construction began in 1931. The course opened in 1932 with limited play and the formal opening was January 1933. In 1934, the first Masters was played. At 10:22am on March 22, 1934, Bobby Jones struck his tee shot, his first competitive round of golf since 1930, and The Masters was born. Jones did not win the event that year. In fact, his tie for 13th was his best showing in 12 appearances.

from the entrance to the clubhouse. There are 61 large magnolia trees that line both sides of the 330-yard road, and they date back to the late 1850s.

The most abundant type of tree at Augusta is the pine. Several species grow along the course, including: Loblolly Pines, Shortleaf Pines, Slash Pines, Longleaf Pines, Eastern White Pines. Jack Nicklaus became the oldest player to win a Masters Tournament, at 46 years, 2 months and 23 days - in 1986. He also has the most Masters Tournament wins, with six.

Myth: You need to be a great putter to win The Masters Ian Woosnam, Bernhard Langer, Fred Couples and Adam Scott have all won here in the last 20 years and none of them would be regarded as the best at wielding a short (or in Bernhard and Adam's cases, long) stick. Myth: The fairways at Augusta are wider than just about anywhere else Yes, they appear generous but actually they’re not. In some cases half, or even a third of the available landing area is any good to you. Myth: The 12th is among the toughest par threes in the world Pros are hitting anything between 6-8 iron, depending on the wind and if they can’t hit a reasonably sized target with one of those, they’re in the wrong job. Truth is, we remember the disasters but the great majority of the field stroll through the hole. Myth: Amen Corner is one of the toughest three-hole stretches in the world The 11th is a 445-yard par four that most of the field will hit something like an 8-iron into. There’s a pond short left but plenty of bail out to the right. 12th – see above. 13th – one of the most frequently birdied holes on the course and virtually the whole field can get up with an iron. HOW TO NEGOTIATE ROUNDABOUTS If you are unsure about the correct way to negotiate roundabouts, here are some simple rules to help you enter and exit roundabouts safely and in the right lane. because the only way to leave the roundabout is by turning right. This doesn’t mean we always have to enter the roundabout from the right hand lane. It depends on the exit we need to take. However this simple rule, in practice, can be more complex. Let us see some examples.

161

?

1st EXIT RIGHT Enter roundabout keeping to right hand side lane. Stay in lane until exit is reached. Indicate and exit roundabout.

CONTINUING STRAIGHT ON (e.g. 2nd EXIT STRAIGHT AHEAD) APPROACHING ROUNDABOUTS It’s important to remember to give way to traffic already on the roundabout. If the roundabout is outside urban areas of towns or cities, keep right. If the roundabout is in a built-up area inside a town or city and the lanes are clearly marked, you should use the lane that best corresponds to the exit you need to take.

LEAVING ROUNDABOUTS This causes the most confusion amongst drivers. Which lane to choose? Why do I get beeped at if I’m in the right lane? Drivers must exit roundabouts from the right hand lane,

Enter roundabout keeping to right hand side lane. Stay in lane until exit is reached. Indicate prior to exit and leave roundabout.

TURNING LEFT OR CHANGING DIRECTION (e.g. 3rd OR FINAL EXIT)

Enter roundabout keeping to left hand side lane. Stay in lane until you have passed the exit before your turn off, then change lane by indicating right and giving other road users sufficient time to anticipate your manoeuvre. Don’t forget that drivers circulating in the outside lanes have priority, so use your mirrors to ensure you are not blocking them as you change lanes.

Car News

by Martin Ward

Mazda MX 5, Press Event, Halifax. Yes you read that correctly, Halifax. That's nice and local for me as a quick 40 minute drive to get there and some very pretty scenery nearby in places such as Haworth and the Bronte Country. So, a new convertible on a wet, windy, cold day is probably not the best test for a two-seater convertible... or is it?

T

his all new MX-5 is quite literally all new and even though it’s a tiny bit shorter than the old one you don’t seem to have lost any room anywhere. There is just as much legroom, the same amount of boot space, and it never was very big anyway so nothing has changed there then. If you parked it 200 metres away you could easily tell that it was an MX-5. Or at least you could on a normal day anyway; if you parked it 200 metres away in Halifax this particular day, you couldn’t see it due to the mist and heavy rain. Park it up on the moors, walk away to take a good look and you’d never find it again! The designers have stayed close to the original MX-5 values producing a car that is every bit an MX-5 but more modern, much better looking, and with sharper crisper lines, which make it much more desirable I'd say. On the press launch I only managed to drive one car: a 1.5 litre Sport Nav. This lively engine develops 131ps and accelerates from 0-62 mph in 8.3 seconds with a top speed of 127 mph. The CO2 emission figure is 139g/km and the combined fuel consumption figure is 47.1 mpg. This petrol engine is Mazda’s SKYACTIV-G four-cylinder 1,496cc DOHC 16 valve and it is coupled to a very smooth six speed manual gearbox. The short gear-lever is easy to use and very 18 THE MARKET PLACE

precise, making it a lovely gear change that feels very sporty. Out on the wet roads of West Yorkshire and heading towards the even wetter, slippier roads of North Yorkshire the MX-5 behaved itself perfectly. Despite it being rear-wheel drive, it did not want to skip about and it felt really safe, sticking to the roads as if there was no water there at all. Impressive. On horrible wet days you really want to be in a car that is sat high off the ground, a car that you can see far ahead in front of you and a car that you feel to have plenty of protection surrounding you; not a car where you feel as though you are almost sat on the ground. But somehow the MX-5 didn’t make you feel uncomfortable, unsafe or compromised because you were sat so low. During the drive around Yorkshire I found a wide railway bridge that sheltered the car from the rain so it was time to find out how long it took to put the roof down and back up again. I searched high and low looking for the button to make it go down. I pressed every button I could find, and nothing happened. Then it occurred to me that it might not have a button, and it might be like going back in time, that you might just have to do it manually - yes manually – by yourself, without the aid of modern technology. This turned out to be just the case: You pull a lever to

throw the roof backwards and then it’s down in just a few seconds. The same on the way back up; you stand alongside the car to get hold of the roof-frame and throw it back up again. It is so easy and quick, who needs one of them-therenew-fangled-modern things anyway, when it’s as easy as that? So do you need to test a new opentop sports car in the sunshine? Well if you want the sun on your head you can always sit in your back garden in a deck-chair on a hot sunny day. But the unpleasant fact in the UK is that the majority of the time when we drive a sports car it is generally in the rain or cold weather, so to test it on a wet Wednesday in West Yorkshire wasn’t a bad thing after all. It did prove just how watertight the roof is as not a single drop of water came in. And it also proved just how good the heater was and how quickly it got you warm and cleared the windscreen. Certainly you don’t need good weather to enjoy a twoseater convertible. This new MX-5 really feels as though it has grown up and feels larger than it really is. It looks great and drives even better. It looks very modern and very premium, but above all, it doesn’t leak… The price of the car we tested was £22,495.00 OTR and it does have quite a lot of standard equipment included.

TRENDY TECH This Decorative Smart Badge/Pin is something everyone could use.

Wearables were supposed to be the next big thing but it has not quite been like that, but if there is one wearable that could catch on it is this digital pin from Pins Collective, a startup company from Sweden. The idea is great, take a classic badge/ pin and make the face into a thin LCD screen and then sync it wirelessly to an app on your phone that lets you change the image displayed on the screen, to any photo or moving image.

Currently a kickstarter project, Pins Collective are looking for backers to turn this dream into reality.

The Guardzilla Outdoor Wireless Security Camera Security cameras used to mean extensive wiring in order to be used in and around the home, but the 'Guardzilla' outdoor wireless security camera is designed for easy integration. The camera works indoors or out and only requires power from a power cord or AA batteries to operate. From here, the 'Guardzilla' instantly connects to the home's WiFi network to provide constant monitoring and connectivity for inhabitants. Motion-sensing technology, night vision capabilities and an intuitive smartphone app make the 'Guardzilla' outdoor wireless security camera a cinch to incorporate. When motion is detected, the 'Guardzilla' can be set to send authorized users a text or email to have them check the live HD stream to make sure everything is all right.

Available at www.amazon.co.uk and priced at ÂŁ99.99

The Xiaoro Washer massages clothing instead of spinning it While traditional clothes washers use a horizontal spinning motion that can tangle and tear clothing, the 'Xiaoro' uses a vertical massaging system instead. The machine itself uses a silicone bag placed within its interior, which can expand and decrease to effectively wash loads of any size. When clothes are added to the bag, it expands while water fills the areas between each article of clothing. Then, a massaging ring moves up and down the silicone bag, which kneads the garments to provide an adequate wash. When the clothes washer is finished, a vacuum sucks the water out of the bag and squeezes the clothes dry. This gentle machine is designed to clean clothes and act as an alternative option for those who dislike the traditional spin cycle.

Currently a concept design but could be introduced to the world very soon.

iRobot Braava 320 Floor Mopping Robot

John Paul George & Me is a musical children's tee that plays on the fact that kids need constant stimulation. This piece of clothing uses conductive paint that turns it into an instrument when touched. With three different musical children's tees, kids can create their own band. One acts as a guitar, the other as bass and the last as drums. They are each represented by their own abstract graphic, which loosely depicts the different instruments. Working with an app, the tees playback in real-time. Since the sound is coming from whatever device is in use, headphones can be implemented so that parents aren't disturbed on a minute basis.

This item is still in it's prototype phase and not available to buy yet. 20 THE MARKET PLACE

Aside from mopping, the iRobot Braava 320 is capable of efficiently sweeping the floors any time of the day in an area up to 800square-feet. With regard to mopping, the iRobot Braava 320 can wash up to 250-square-feet of floorspace per cycle. The iRobot Braava 320 is packed with a NorthStar Navigation System that operates like an indoor GPS system to guide the robot around the house without the need for advanced installation.

Our Spring Fair again was a success and ensured that we continue to raise funds for our cause. There were 20 stalls with many and varied things for sale. Amongst them was jewellery, fashion, confectionary, cakes, art, bric-a-brac, hats, plants and wind chimes and more. In total we raised 800 euros and we give huge thanks to everyone who came along and helped us raise that, as well as all the stall holders. One stall in particular that deserves individual mention and thanks is Jackie and her friend Eleanor who bring along a big table full of delicious cakes and savoury dishes and donate everything to the Legion. “Wonderful friends to the Legion”. There was a great atmosphere and everyone enjoyed the morning. Our thanks again must go also to the Caves restaurant people who so willingly support us and give their time and effort to help us. We certainly would not be able to hold as many events as we do if it wasn't for their unfailing support.

On a separate note, sadly I have to mention the death of Eleanor Bennett who for some years organised our lunches at La Herradura. Eleanor had been a long standing supporter and friend to the Legion and over the last few years worked hard to make such a success of the lunch days at the Pena Parda restaurant. These were always fun and lively in a beautiful setting and all of us who regularly attend will miss her tremendously. Fortunately for us Kate Millington has agreed to take on the task for the next few months to ensure that Eleanor’s hard work doesn't go to waste. So for anyone wishing to attend the lunch at Pena Parda on the 1st April please contact Kate on the email address or phone number above. dia de aceite verdial - 10th April at the Plaza de Andalucia in Periana, near Lake Vinuela On 10th April Periana, a municipality with one of the region's best olive oils, hosts the latest edition of the "Verdial Oil Festival". The olive oil produced in the municipality's own olive-oil mills can be sampled on the day. It is one of the most important culinary events in the province of Málaga. The village's two cooperatives (San José Artesano, in Mondrón and San Isidro, in the centre of Periana) share out around six thousand bottles of oil. As is customary, festivities commence early in the morning with the traditional miller breakfast, including bread, cod, green beans and, of course, Verdial olive oil, which is characterised by its fruity flavour.

24th April Calle Camino de Velez, Benamargosa

The "Taste of Country Festival" is held in Benamargosa each year. This culinary festival, which coincides with the arrival of spring, is celebrated with style and lets farmers from the Axarquía region show off their best harvests. Visitors can try the very best of the Mediterranean diet: avocado smoothie, ensaladilla cateta (a potato-based salad), tripe and ajo bacalao (a codbased snack), among others, at several stands located throughout the village. A huge paella will also be made for residents and visitors to enjoy.

To them the world is 'a mass of people, places and events which they struggle to make sense of, and which can cause them considerable anxiety.' A way to get involved is to Light up Blue for autism! Allergy Awareness Week will draw awareness to various allergies and promote well-being in those who suffer from them. Usually the body's response is actually towards a harmless substance - a common allergen like dust, pets, medicines and dairy foods like milk and eggs. The misery that a reaction to an allergy can cause should not be underestimated! Could you offer support to others on the phone? check out the allergy awareness website.

Every 22nd April Earth Day is celebrated by over a billion people. Earth Day was first observed in 1970 in Wisconsin, USA and that year over 20 million people demonstrated for a healthy and sustainable environment. This year the theme of the day is 'Trees for the Earth!'. At the Earth Day website there is loads of information about issues like climate change, food and recycling and waste reduction, and there are also lots of ways to get involved.

dia de la Morcilla 17th April from 12pm Plaza de Constitucion, Canillas de Aceituno The "Black Pudding Day" is held each year in Canillas de Aceituno, a village located in the region of Axarquía, in honour of one of the village's most valued products thanks to its careful preparation, its seasoning and, most importantly, its flavour. More than 300 kilos of black pudding are shared out at this culinary festival, washed down with a good local wine. The festival usually takes place on the last Sunday of April, coinciding with the village's patron saint festivals in honour of Our Lady of Cabeza. The event begins with a floral offering in the church and later a procession through the village's streets and, once the patron saint has been returned to the church, the culinary festival commences.

malaga film festival 2016 Teatro Cervantes, Calle Ramos Marin, Malaga In 2016 the Málaga Film Festival celebrates its 19th year. Between 22 April and 1 May this event will again contribute to the development of Spanish cinema with screenings of the best feature films, short films, documentaries and animations. It will also pay tribute to different personalities from the film-making industry and organise numerous film series, exhibitions and parallel events. Throughout the week the biggest stars of Spanish cinema will walk Málaga's red carpet and greet the thousands of fans who fill the streets. The Cervantes Theatre, the Provincial Cultural Centre, the Albéniz Cinema, the Echegaray Theatre, the Vice-Chancellor's Office of Málaga University, the Cajamar Alameda Hall, the FNAC Marquee, the Carmen Thyssen Museum Málaga and the Picasso Museum are some of the venues where you will be able to enjoy the films and other organised activities.

Young at heart: Think yourself younger People who age fantastically well leave clues; after studying those clues, this is what we found. You can use your mind to trick your body into feeling and then becoming younger. We all have three ages. We have a chronological or birth certificate age, we have a biological one – the age of our organs, and we have a psychological one – the age we feel. Erase the Years When we do young things; laughing, dancing and having sex, we send a message to our bodies that we are young and this slows down how we age. The younger you feel and act the more you lower your biological age. Our bodies get older on their own timetable. A runner aged 40 may have the heart and lungs of a 25 year old but the knees of a 55 year old. Your birth certificate age is the least important. How old you feel and act are far more important if you want to grow older without growing old. In 2010 Harvard psychologist Dr Ellen Langer took a group of celebrities to a retreat for a BBC programme. It was furnished from 1980 – all the magazines, radio shows and TV programmes were from the 80s, and each person wore a badge of a photo of themselves from then. Before starting, the group underwent tests to determine their age including grip, vision, hearing, balance, hormones, muscle strength, and so on. They all spent a week living as if it was 30 years earlier. Everything going on around them was engineered to enable them to act as they had 30 years ago, subconsciously tricking themselves to believe they were younger. After seven days, they took the same tests again… and all had reversed their age by a minimum of between seven and ten years, and had a new lease of life. When asked to describe what had happened they reported forgetting they were older and as a result they physically grew younger. These experiments prove that your beliefs determine how you age. If you think and act old, you grow old 26 THE MARKET PLACE

prematurely, whereas when you think and act younger, you remain younger physically and mentally. That’s why people like Cliff Richard and Keith Richards have aged in a rather unique way, because they are singers, dancing on stage and doing something youthful for a living they are seen as eternally young. Cliff Richards is called Peter Pan and Keith, who should have aged terribly because of his abusive lifestyle, proves that doing young things and thinking young thoughts is powerful enough to overcome the ageing effect of bad habits. Women who are very girly like Lulu and Goldie Hawn grow older differently because giggling, laughing and doing younger things keeps you younger. Girly thoughts and actions make you stay more girly. Nelson Mandela spent 30 years in jail with no access to good food or vitamins yet his passion for life kept him youthful, alert and full of life. People in Japan with a different expectation of ageing age differently as do people who love exercise, embrace new technology and have an active life – they stay young for longer. Have you noticed those people who seem to love exercise, embrace new technology, love being with younger people and have an active social life are the people who tend to look young, vibrant and happy? That’s not a coincidence; it’s because they are doing the things they did when young. They get the added benefit of looking younger because that’s the way they feel (not the other way round).

Watch your Words If you don’t want to grow old badly don’t use ageing language. Don’t say “I’m too old to wear that,” or “I can’t do that at my age.” Instead of saying “I look old”, which is seen by the mind as permanent, change it to “I look tired.” Your mind accepts that tired is temporary and after sleep you’ll look younger. Using words like knackered, past it, gaga, at my time of life and at my age cause your mind to accept that ageing and deteriorating are inevitable when that does not have to be the case. If you want to be part of the new old age, use words like youthful, vibrant, full of life and vitality. Your mind believes everything you tell it and acts on those words so if you say “I forgot, it must be

my age,” or “I am so cranky and tired I can't stay up late at my age,” you are allowing yourself to believe it is beyond your influence, which is not true. Instead, remember that children forget things all the time and babies are cranky without enough sleep; it’s not your age so don’t attribute negative behaviours to your years. Changing the words you use to describe yourself changes how you look and feel.

Embrace Change We live in exciting times where being 50 means you are only halfway through your life. We don’t dread getting old, we dread losing our youth and vitality. You can grow older without growing old while adding years to your lifespan. Women like Jane Fonda, Mary Berry and Catherine Deneuve are showing us the new old age as they refuse to conform to what ageing is. You can also trick your mind into staying young by continuing to learn new things throughout life. Doing new and different things keeps your brain elastic, sharp and finely-tuned. Professors in their 90s have brain neurons equal to those of 30. We only age when we stop doing new things, so embrace newness and change and you will stay mentally younger; this in turn keeps you physically younger. Our mind doesn’t age unless we stop using it. You can keep your memory and thinking sharp by reading your paper and doing crosswords on your iPad, use Skype, instagram and twitter as this will keep your mind in peak condition because anything new boosts your brainpower.

Halt ageing with nuerobics. Learn something new, try this! We make new brain neurons when we practice nuerobics. This simply means if you’re right handed, hold your toothbrush and your TV remote with your left hand, and go upstairs leading with your left leg. When you use the ‘wrong’ hand or leg this makes new neurons boosting brain power. These simple tricks give you tangible results so that you age in ways that make others envy you.

Exploring crete's beautiful beaches article and photos provided by www.boardingpasstraveler.com

Crete is the largest island in Greece and is a beachgoer’s delight thanks to its long sunny days and large coastline with lots of options when it comes to beaches. You’ll find everything from quiet secluded spots to those outfitted with chairs, umbrellas and other amenities, family-friendly beaches and more.

Since we were staying at a villa in the centre of Crete, the island was ours to explore. One day we decided to venture down south in search of some less crowded beaches away from the large towns in the North, perfect for lounging and soaking up the Cretan sun. We couldn’t have been more right. Here are three spots that I would return to in a heartbeat. Matala Beach

Description: This sand and pebble beach is distinguished by tall rocky cliffs with caves that were once likely used as Roman tombs and later inhabited by hippies in the 60s and 70s. The caves envelope Matala Beach to create a natural harbour around the clear blue-green water and can be visited for 3 euros (or you can swim around to reach them). The beach is well-organised with rows of chairs and big straw umbrellas, perfect for lounging after taking a dip in the warm water. Nearby in the small town of Matala you’ll find a handful of souvenir shops, cafes, tavernas and hotels. Matala Beach is also Blue Flag-certified, meaning that it meets certain criteria in areas like cleanliness and safety. Location: 34.99404, 24.74972 How to get there: Drive (1.25 hours from Heraklion by car) or public bus (from Heraklion station B via Mires and Phaistos) Costs: Parking 2 euros, chair rental 2 euros each Amenities: Chairs and umbrellas for rent, restrooms, showers, snack bar, mini-market adjacent to parking lot to purchase water, food, towels and other beach gear Helpful hints: Plan to arrive early in the day to beat the crowds. Also, while there are no official nude beaches in Crete you may see “discrete nudists” at Matala Beach.

Red Beach

Description: A short hike from Matala, a day at the Red Beach is definitely worth the extra effort. Look for a small sign in the town pointing toward the beach, which will lead you up a rocky path to a gate at the top of the hill (be sure to close it behind you so the goats don’t get out). As you descend down upon the beach, pause to take in the colourful view: off-white cliffs diving into the blue-green water and reddish-brown sand from which it gets its name. The Red Beach is not organised, sans maybe a few umbrellas and chairs if you get there early, and the only real amenity is Yanni’s Bar, a makeshift stone shack where (presumably) Yanni serves mojitos, frappés and other cold drinks alongside his rugged sidekick goat. Greek paradise found. Location: 34.98589, 24.74949

How to get there: Hike (20 minutes from Matala Beach, or boat (from the Matala harbour, ask at one of the restaurants) Costs: None Amenities: Chairs and umbrellas (limited), restrooms (TBD), snack bar Helpful hints: Make sure you have good sturdy shoes (no flip flops) since the path to the Red Beach is relatively steep with loose rocks. The beach is more secluded, which translates into a more laid back vibe and potentially more nudism.

Agiofarago Beach

Description: The most remote of the beaches described here, Agiofarago Beach requires a bit of a hike in exchange for its breathtaking scenery. GPS will be your friend as you drive through the village of Sivas and past the Odigitria Monastery. There will be signs for Agiofarago as the paved road turns to a rough and narrow dirt road before finally reaching a parking lot (you can also park on the side of the road along the way if the lot is full). From here it’s about a half hour hike through gorge, framed by dramatic cliffs on both sides (keep an eye out for the small red and white church of Agios Antonios on your left). Then like curtains parting the cliffs open to reveal the smooth pebble sand and deep blue water of the southernmost part of Crete. With only a handful of other beachgoers, it’s the perfect spot to enjoy the last golden rays of the day. Location: 34.9255, 24.77838 How to get there: Drive and hike (1.5 hours from Heraklion by car plus 30 minutes on foot through the gorge) or boat (from Matala harbour) Costs: Free Amenities: None Helpful hints: Accessing Agiofarago beach also requires good sturdy shoes, and you should make sure that you leave enough time to hike back to the parking lot before dark. And for what it’s worth, I also read that you shouldn’t park under any trees since the goats may climb on your car to reach the leaves. Agiofarago Beach

Fellowship of The King, Nerja; April Film & Tapas Evening The final offering in the present season of popular Film & Tapa evenings at FTK in Nerja will be screened at 7.30pm on Friday 8th April at FTK’s premises in Pasaje San Miguel (around the corner from the main Mercadona.) “Virtuous” is a recent (2015) film, telling the stories of several characters trapped in danger, fear and ambition. The subplots enhance the film without ever causing confusion, because the variety of characters blends together seamlessly to tell one unified story. The film moves at a good pace, opening with powerful events which slowly unfold through the multiple story lines encircling singer-songwriter Brandy Allison, a girl who’s seen a fair bit of the world, but is now in the process of recovery at a rehab halfway house. The spoiled grandson of the town’s leading citizen attempts to rape her and gets himself shot for his trouble. She may be guilty, but the circumstances extenuating, however, given her background (she was a “lady of the night” during her drugaddicted days,) she’s an easy target for the prosecution. The leadingcitizen-grandfather wants her tried

and convicted rapidly and he’s got the political and financial clout to see her sent down for good and so he engages a ruthless and corrupt lawyer who brings the past she’s longed to escape to the forefront of her trial. Fortunately Allison has defence lawyer Erik Estrada (TV’s Chips) on her case and so a right royal legal battle ensues. The intensity of the events central to the film means the lead actors are cast in very demanding roles, which they carry off well - especially Bonnie Johnson, who plays Judge Donna Ferguson. Her performance is moving and insightful. The strong cinematography establishes the mood of the film and even carries

the drama at times. All in all, a very watchable film that sets corruption against integrity and underlines the fact that we should not judge people too readily without knowing all the facts. Why not join us? More information on 952 969 058. Leslie Thomas.

Nerja Decorative & Fine Arts Society Tuesday April 12th, 6pm The Cultural Centre (Casa Cultura) Calle Granada Nerja Visitors most welcome E10 WANDERINGS AMONGST THE NOMADIC TRIBES OF IRAN AND AFGHANISTAN SEARCHING FOR THE WOVEN ART AND SYMBOLISM OF THE NOMADS A fully illustrated Lecture in English by Brian MacDonald Sponsored by La Caixa Bank "My time spent in Iran and Afghanistan during the 1970s began to foster a passion for the wonderful weavings produced by nomads on basic ground looms and the symbolic representation contained within this woven art. My subsequent visits were spent travelling and searching amongst nomadic tribes for these exquisite 19th century weavings, which have become harder to find and have now virtually disappeared. Today, these nomadic people no longer weave spontaneously and the language of symbols is lost. The meanings may now be forgotten by the weavers but the magical and mythical symbols remain - pan of the endless cycle which has linked countless women for thousands of years. This lecture illustrates the woven art of the nomads as they move over the territories they have travelled for generations. The audience will have the opportunity of looking at and examining vanity-bags, salt-bags, bedding-bags, wheat sacks, bread and 34 THE MARKET PLACE

dining flat-weaves. The lecture also explores the symbolism contained in these fabulous weavings and some of the stories and adventures I experienced whilst looking for them."

About Brian MacDonald Brian has been a dealer and consultant in antique oriental rugs and carpets since 1979 after his return from Iran. He is the author of Tribal Rugs - Treasures of the Black Tent which was originally published in 1997 and was re-printed in April 2010. Brian is one of few western dealers to have lived and worked among tribal groups in remote areas of Iran and Afghanistan during the 1970s and then again, after the Iranian Revolution, in the 1990s. In 1990 he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society for his work amongst the Persian tribes. He has lectured for NADFAS since 1986. Brian has returned to Iran several times in recent years, travelling and collecting amongst the Bakhtiari, Qashqa'i and Shahsevun tribes. For the past 22 years he has been based in the Cotswolds where he still acts as a lecturer, dealer and consultant, specialising in antique Eastern rugs, carpets and tribal dowry weavings. He is currently working on a new book, Woven Art Dowry Weavings of the Persian tribes.

Manish's Zodiac predictions - April Manish Kumar Arora, K.P. Astrologer, Numerologist, Tarot Card Reader & Vastu Consultant Facebook: manishastroconsultant email: manish@manishastrologer.com Aries ( 21 March – 19 April )

Libra ( 23 September – 22 October )

Taurus ( 20 April – 20 May )

Scorpio ( 23 October – 21 November )

You will explore new avenues, place yourself in newer surroundings and accept any invitations you’re sent; because that ‘next career shift’ you’ve been waiting to enter your life will be right around the corner. This month promises opportunities to expand your career goals. You will approach your romantic relationships a little more differently, trying to understand how you can help contribute to your partners’ life. New investment opportunities might expand your bank balance as well as a certain pay-rise or a new job with great perks might land in your lap. You are in a place of celebration to have finally found that perfect balance in romance and are focusing your energies on keeping your happy place more accessible and allowing yourself to visualize the life you wish to live.

Gemini ( 21 May – 20 June)

You are looking for a new source of inspiration, or a message that reinvigorates you. You need to be however careful of not allowing the workplace to be your lone source of satisfaction. Treat your relationships with honesty and patience this month. Use the power of love as an active, restorative force for good. Take pro-active steps to activate your dreams and meet your goals.

Cancer ( 21 June – 22 July )

This could be a time when you decide to change careers, to start taking the necessary steps to move in that direction. Letting go of the past and not falling prey to idealism may be conditions you need to deal with first. Taking a practical approach is favoured which should include a careful assessment of past experience and what life has taught you so far.

Leo ( 23 July – 22 August )

There may be a sudden change, a disturbance or unexpected event which introduces something new into your life which is likely to be of a challenging nature. A passionate approach to situations that deserve compassion is favoured as well as careful consideration of ethical matters. This period is indicating a time to rethink and resolve old issues, but breaking away from previous situations or decisions will be difficult.

Virgo ( 23 August – 22 September )

It’s time to get on with the next chapter of your life, and if you consciously and deliberately put your focus on getting started you’ll begin to see results. There’s a lot of recalibration and upgrade still taking place, to give your heart a chance to catch up. Pay attention to those places where you’re not feeling all in, especially where new chapters are beginning.

Your money flow remains strong but do staunch the "outward flow" - spending, debts, etc. Investments previously made were good idea, so continue to value them, but don't make new ones. Your career scene is tricky - higher-ups are both impatient and cautious, and you, too, might blow hot and cold about your ambitions. Romance is highlighted, but love's road has a few potholes. Now is the perfect time to pursue creative interests and do something that is self- fulfilling and satisfying. Keep your head down at work and get on with your day to day business in as quiet a way as you can. Your home life won’t be any great shakes either this month and there’s no life changing event likely in the coming four weeks.

Sagittarius ( 22 November -21 December )

Money flows swiftly to you (and, if you're not conservative, flows from you) now to mid-April. Save it! Your plans for the future will change daily be patient. Social, organizational and entertainment plans might go awry. Avoid new ventures, whether they're your own idea or someone else's suggestion. Only research, investigative, and "from the past" projects will be free of glitches.

Capricorn ( 22 December – 19 January ) The first two weeks of this month find you radiating irresistible charm, so use it wisely and reap rewards. Money matters become more important later on. You'll want to improve your finances - perhaps by finding a different job, or ways to earn cash from your hobbies, home, or passions. Possibilities and ideas spring up in your neighbourhood, through friends.

Aquarius ( 20 January – 18 February )

This will be a month of opportunity, negotiation or wrestling with a challenge – you’ll want to be free of the chains of chores. Your sexual, financial and “deep health” zones grow more and more important – and generally lucky. This can lead to a lustful affair, an investment or settlement – all of which open lifestyle doorways. Love would be a “source of health.”

Pisces ( 19 February – 20 March )

This is not the time to be storing up any little niggles that could come back on you like a hurricane later. Pay attention to your partner and don’t do anything that you know full well will upset him/her, even if it seems like an insignificant trifle to you. You’ll make solid advances socially, could make new friends, might be attracted to a potential mate.

Can Garlic Function as a Nutrition Supplement?

W

ith around 1 in 3 British adults having high blood pressure, hypertension is one of the UK's more ubiquitous diseases. Medical nutrition therapy - centered on the DASH diet, weight management and increased physical activity - has proven to be effective in hypertension management, while physicians often will prescribe medications, as well. Recent interest in supplements, their effectiveness and potential drug interactions may prompt inquiries from patients diagnosed with hypertension. Although foods and compounds hailing from the traditions of folk medicine are the subject of safety and efficacy studies in the treatment of high blood pressure, one trendy supplement is everyone's favourite little aromatic: garlic.

responsible for the garlicky aroma, but also has been identified as the potential beneficial constituent to health. Allicin is formed when fresh garlic is crushed and begins degrading almost immediately. For this reason, along with factoring the amount of fresh garlic consumption required to reap the potential benefits related to hypertension, garlic supplements have become popular. Available through natural grocers, online and in vitamin stores, garlic supplements range in format (typically tablets or capsules) and formulations, including dried garlic powder, powder extracts and macerated oils - each with different claims of benefits and bioavailability.

Garlic has been used safely in human clinical studies lasting up to seven years without reports of significant adverse effects, and doses higher than would be administered to humans have been tested without toxicity in animals. Although many studies did not report adverse events, when side effects were noted, they included malodorous breath or body odor, gastrointestinal symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, flatulence or diarrhea and allergic reactions for those with a garlic allergy.

With a long, varied history of medicinal use, garlic supplementation for decreasing diastolic and systolic blood pressure is rated as possibly effective on the Natural Medicines Comprehensive Database. Similar to some pharmaceuticals, garlic appears to help in vasodilation, or widening of blood vessels due to relaxation of the muscular walls of the vessels. It also may inhibit angiotensin II, a naturally occurring substance in the body that narrows blood There also are some drug-nutrient interactions of moderate and major effects to discuss with patients interested in vessels and increases blood pressure. garlic supplementation, including blood thinning and blood To be clear, the evidence is not strong enough to suggest pressure medications, contraceptive drugs, tuberculosis that garlic preparations may be used as an alternative to medications and several HIV/AIDS medications. prescription medication, and garlic supplementation should Due to the wide range of product types - and because not replace dietary, lifestyle or medical interventions for dietary supplements do not require the Medicines and hypertension. Clams in white wine, garlic and herb broth Get your garlic fix by preparing this easy to make, healthy and simple to source ingredients here in Spain recipe. INGREDIENTS - SERVES 4 PEOPLE l

1.3 kilos of clams

l

1 cup white wine

l

4 tbsp unsalted butter

l

2-3 tbsp fresh oregano, chopped

l

2-3 cloves of garlic, minced

l

a handful of fresh parsley, chopped

l

2-3 shallots, finely chopped

l

juice from 1 lemon

l

1/4 tsp crushed red pepper flakes or to taste

l

1/4 cup of heavy cream (optional)

INSTRUCTIONS

l

l

Before cooking the clams, keep them on ice, outside of a plastic bag (they need to breathe). I put a shallow tray of ice in the sink and left the clams on top of that until I was ready to cook. Just before cooking, scrub the shells with a brush under cold, running water. In a large saute pan, melt the butter over medium high heat. Add the garlic and shallots; cook until fragrant, without browning (1-2 minutes). Sprinkle in desired amount of crushed pepper flakes and add wine. Bring to a boil and add the clams and oregano. Cover and simmer for 5-8 minutes until clams have opened up, shaking the pan occasionally.

l

As the clams open, carefully take them out and set aside in a bowl. Discard any clams that have not opened after about 8 minutes.

l

Continue to simmer the broth until it has reduced some in volume (how much broth you would like with your clams is up to you). Squeeze in the lemon juice and stir in the parsley. Season with a few grindings of black pepper. Taste to see if salt is needed (probably not, because clams are salty!) Add a touch of heavy cream to the broth, if you’d like. Return the clams to the pan to reheat.

l

Serve with some lovely wholemeal crusty bread and a glass of crisp white wine.

Toads and other pet-unfriendly visitors

APARiV Dog Rescue in Rincon de la Victoria is always looking for people willing to adopt or foster their dogs. We are always looking for volunteers to help us with various things inside and outside the refuge. We also have a charity shop with many cheap second hand items for sale in Torre del Mar. In case you are interested in one of our dogs or in helping out please contact Alix at 610902019. Here is information regarding just one of our many dogs:

DANI

This month we would like you to get to know Dani. Dani is a very Handsome longer haired very soft to the touch Podenco. Dani was born in December 2013. He is a medium size. Dani has been with us for almost 2 years now. Although he was a bit scared at first he is now a very nice out-going young boy. He is very sweet and looooves cuddles. Dani was thrown over our fence together with 2 other podenco’s. Dani is cat proof. Who is going to give Dani his forever home?

TAIL (Torrox Animal International League) When somebody makes it known to us that they are thinking of adopting one of our rescued dogs, our hearts jump for joy and then we start thinking of the dogs that we have in the Refuge and which might just fit the bill for the prospective adopter. Apart from the 50 or so housed in the Refuge, from puppies to older dogs – just why is it that puppies are always adorable and yet some of our long term older residents are simply divine and yet lose out to the younsters? – we have more or less the same number housed with our supporters. Would some of those be right for the adopter? Should we bring them in to the Refuge so they can be seen? Inevitably, choosing a dog to adopt is a matter for the heart and how you react is partially dictated by the manner in which the dog presents herself/himself. You don’t want aggression, but neither is simpering a pleasing trait; but both would probably be a reaction to how they have been treated previously and as an adopter the dog is only trying to ask you for love. Tail tries very hard to eliminate all the possible pitfalls of adopting, from providing you with a fully inoculated/neutered dog to which we have done our very best to give comfort and love and security during it’s time with us, in the belief that they will be a constant companion and become a member of your family forever. The first of this years Tail’s renowned Dog Shows, the Spring Show, takes place on the 23rd April. All the usual classes. Enter the date in your diary and watch out for further info from the posters. Follow Tail on Facebook. 42 THE MARKET PLACE

As with most animals, spring is the mating season for frogs and toads, and anyone living near a water source will probably hear them in the evening. These creatures breed in water so they are attracted to ponds, stagnant pools, creeks and river beds. Toads live on land and tend come out at night and under damp conditions such as a heavy dew or rain, and they may even venture into a garden which has just been watered. Any dog owner who finds a toad in the garden, should first secure their dog in a safe place and then don rubber gloves and find tools such as a bucket or shovel. Next, remove the toad safely yet humanely back to its natural habitat like a field or river. Several species of toads in Andalucía are poisonous and can be fatal to pets if they bite or lick these amphibians. The symptoms of poisoning include drooling or foaming from the mouth, head shaking, vomiting, sneezing, difficulty breathing and convulsions. If a pet has been poisoned, flush out the mouth with copious amounts of water and contact a vet immediately. Unfortunately, the Pine Processionary Caterpillars are still on the march so the above advice applies to these pests as well. In addition, as the weather gets warmer, there will be an increase in mosquitoes, sand flies, fleas and ticks, so prevent pets’ exposure with spot-on treatments and repellent collars.

Health Fact

A simple, moderately severe sunburn burns the blood vessels extensively.

Microwave radiation from mobile phones implicated in cancer & reproductive issues Since mobile phones are so convenient and because microwave radiation is invisible to us, we rarely consider the risks of carrying our phones near our bodies. But there are risks and governments require phone companies to inform consumers of the dangers of mircrowave radiation. Over time, these energy waves heat up specific areas of the body that are constantly exposed which can lead to carcinogenic activity within the cellular processes. SAR (Specific Absorption Rate) is the amount of heat that

Castor oil - the sticky but successful solution to natural hair growth Are your eyebrows thinning? Is your mop top getting sparse? Are you finding more and more hair in your comb, your sink and your bathtub, than you'd care to find? If so, it might be time for you to consider using something to regrow your hair before it's too late. While it might be a little messier than you're used to, castor oil has proven hair – and skin – benefits, so you shouldn't overlook it just because of its consistency. A researcher says she bought a hexane-free, organic and cold-pressed castor oil, and began applying it to her eyebrows every evening after she washed her face. She says that after about three months she began noticing her eyebrows were thickening, and noticeably so, as well as growing darker – a result she says had to be from the nightly application of castor oil. Others have also reported good hair regrowth results using castor oil. Though it is often used as a laxative, reports Healthy And Natural World, it "has a wide variety of other health benefits, including many pertaining to hair and hair growth, as well as for facial oil cleansing method, stretch marks, dark spots and more." Castor oil is high in ricinoleic acid. This acid is a very effective natural anti-bacterial and anti-fungal agent. This can help keep any fungus or bacteria from inhibiting hair growth. Since the oil is also very thick, it may help to prevent hair loss simply by helping to coat the hair and protect it from falling out. Castor oil is also high in omega 9 fatty acids, which are nourishing to both the hair and the follicle, as well as the surrounding skin. Castor oil has a unique ability to be deeply penetrating, and this helps it to deliver its nourishment deeply into the pores and the follicles that produce hair.

builds up when the body is exposed to mircrowave radiation. The US government safety limit is 1.6 watts per kilogram for mobile phones. Companies that cannot bring the radiation level of their devices below this measure must warn consumers of the dangers. Apple's iPhone warns Consumers of Radiation Exposure from their Phones Apple's iPhone does not meet these standards and that is why they warn consumers in the small print of their phone manual. The small text also warns users to keep the phone away from the body when not in use and to only use carrying cases, belt clips or holders without metal parts. The consensus is clear: mobile phones are not meant to be carried on one's body, exposing the organs and glands to mircrowaves day after day, the risks of cancer if you do are multiplied. When carried in the pocket, mobile phones are near the testes and ovaries, capable of causing endometriosis, cysts, hormonal imbalances and low sperm count.

Sugar eight times more addictive than Cocaine A study conducted by Dr. Nicole Avena of the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, has found that sugar consumption and addictive behaviours are closely linked. Just how bad could a sugar addiction be, you ask? Sadly, the study suggests that it's eight times more addictive than cocaine. Unquestionably, people are flocking to sugar like it's going out of style, and now we know why – it's an addiction. Similarly, highly processed foods, compared to naturally occurring foods, are more likely to induce a blood sugar spike. This is important, because there is a known link between glucose levels and activation of areas of the brain that are involved with addiction. Pizza is the most addictive food. Just one slice contains more sugar than a few Oreo biscuits, thanks to the hidden sugar in the tomato sauce. Now, we all know that most people don't just stop at a mere slice. Biscuits, ice cream and crisps also rank high among the most addictive foods. They too, have a sugar content that impacts the brain in a way that mimics drug and alcohol addiction. The least addictive foods, according to the study? Eat more cucumbers, carrots and beans; they're the least addictive, and therefore, are healthy choices to include in your diet. Why feed your body a substance that's eight times as addictive as cocaine, when you can take the better path and live a healthier, longer life? 48 THE MARKET PLACE

Rules to live by

Giving your life a reboot can teach you a lot about yourself and what you need to be happy. Whether you take a long luxurious trip in a open top car, or an exhilarating drive a little closer to home, it's time to hit the road and discover who you are this summer.

Lead an exciting life Be spontaneous

Experience the thrill of driving to a place where you've never been before. You might surprise yourself.

Don't take the easy option

Put your key in the ignition and relish the challenge of taking the road less travelled.

Drive your dreams

Don't sit around and wait for something to happen to you. Write a list of what you want to achieve over the coming months, check it regularly and then act on it.

Go on a trip

Sometimes we need some time away to get perspective on what we really want. Travel to somewhere you've never been before, on your own, switch off your phone and sit back and relax.

Aim high

Indulge yourself

Make goals not compromises. And, most importantly, don't settle for anything less than you deserve. The sky is your limit.

Push the refresh button on your life

Exude confidence

Don't always give in to life's demands, make time for yourself and prioritise what you love in life. Don't be scared to indulge yourself. Stop and think about what you really want from life. What makes you truly happy? And what drives you?

Follow your heart

A life-changing trip can open up a new chapter in your life. Don't just think about it – try it, with confidence.

Empower yourself

Reach for your potential and never feel guilty for it. Don't wait for somebody else to empower you – life is yours for the taking.

Follow your passion

Embrace the travel spirit and start making your dreams happen today Take a risk

Don't let fear stand in the way of what you want to achieve. Do one thing every week that scares you.

Find your calling

Follow your instincts, not the herd. Discover what makes you happy and find a way to do it every day.

How to be a better version of yourself Reclaim your inner spark

Stuck in a rut? Ask yourself what you get excited about, what inspires you and then let your creativity shine.

Celebrate your imperfections

Perfection is a myth – don 't expect it from yourself, or those around you. Your flaws are what make you beautiful from the inside out.

Be authentic

Never stop being you. Find out what you're passionate about, what truly drives you and work out how to do it every day.

Be comfortable in your own skin

Life is not a race, so don't compare yourself to friends, colleagues or neighbours. True beauty is knowing – and loving – yourself.

Smile

A smile is the one accessory that never goes out of style. Not only will smiling improve your mood, but it will make you more approachable.

Nerja

was once a sleepy fishing village but now the town has a population of over 21,000. The Balcón de Europa is a magnificent promenade that was made famous by King Alfonso XII , who’s statue now takes pride of place at the far end. Close by is the 17th century Church of El Salvador, and the beautiful gardens of Capistrano Playa. The town boasts an active Centro de Cultura, and a new attraction is The Fuente de Europa in Verano Azul Park, which is a very impressive monument, made from pieces of stone donated from EU member states. There are many beaches to be found either side and in front of the town, including Burriana with its numerous cafés and restaurants. Here too, you can take advantage of the water sports on offer, including water skiing, scuba diving and sailing. Just outside Nerja on the coast road towards Maro is a very impressive aquaduct which used to supply the local sugar factory, but is now used to carry water to local farms.

Torre del Mar

is just 30 minutes from Malaga, and is the beach resort of Velez Málaga. Its population of 21,000 grows between June and September to 150,000. The towns attractions have expanded over the last few years to cope with the demand, and now the four kilometres of beach have been enhanced by an impressive promenade, which stretches all the way to Caleta de Vélez, a port providing over 200 berths and offering sailing and water sports. Throughout the summer, there are many Chiringuitos on the beach, serving fresh barbequed fish and ice cold beers. In 2002, Paseo de Larios was pedestrianized, and is now a tranquil promenade, with plenty of pavement cafés and restaurants. At the seafront end of Larios is a line of bars and discos which continue throughout the night on Fridays and Saturdays. The history of Torre is uncertain, but it is thought that it might have been part of an ancient Greek settlement, known as Mainake, which was destroyed by the Carthaginians. Tombs of the Carthaginians were found at the mouth of the river Velez. More recently, it was a small fishing village until major development began in the 1970’s.

La Herradura

nestles between the Punta de la Mona to the east and the rock of Cerro Gordo to the west. The bay enjoys shelter from west winds creating mostly crystal-clear waters, and is a popular location for water sports & paragliding. There are numerous beach bars and restaurants serving specialities of the region, including tropical salads, fresh fish or paella. The Marina del Este near La Herradura is tucked betwen Punta de la Mona to the west and Cotobro to the east. It boasts a beautiful port, elegantly designed to incorporate select shops, art galleries, bars and restaurants. This small strip of coast also claims to be the best place to dive between Almeria and Gibraltar, and is home to one of the areas leading diving schools.

Lake Viñuela

is a 15 minute drive from the N340 Autovia, leaving at the junction for Velez Malaga. Head inland along the A356; this direction also leads to numerous inland white villages. The first turning on our map is to Benamocarra, which is sign posted to the right after the last roundabout into Velez Malaga. This road will take you back over the main road and then also on to Iznate, and divides to take you to Almachar, El Borge and Cutar. The second turning off the A356 is on the right (after the Repsol garage) to Trapiche. Continue on the A356, and immediately you will see another junction on the left, sign posted to Benamargosa, Triana, Comares and Cutar. This road will also take you as far as Rio Gordo (for a scenic drive). There is a popular Spanish bar on the corner of this junction called El Cruz. Back on the A356, continue on and you will pass another junction on the right, to Canillas de Aceituno, and finally you will see Lake Vinuela in front of you. Turn right before the lake for Puente de Don Manuel, Alcaucin, Viñuela and Periana; carry straight on for Los Romanes, Rio Gordo and Colmenar.

Frigiliana

encompass 39.74 sq km within which live just over 3,000 people year round. Frigiliana is a popular tourist destination, and because there are many holiday homes here, the population triples during the summer months. The history of Frigiliana dates from prehistoric times. The village has been inhabited by numerous civilisations from the Phoenicians and Romans to the Arabs, who had the greatest impact on the town’s development. During the Christian reconquest, Frigiliana was the site of numerous battles culminating in the famous battle of the Rock of Frigiliana in 1569 which ended in the complete expulsion of the Moorish people. One can learn the history of this struggle by walking through the streets of the historic section where there are a series of twelve ceramic plaques posted about which explain the entire story.
