Top 10 things to see and do in and around San Diego San Diego is a hidden gem in plain sight. I was around 10 years old the last time I visited, so my knowledge was limited to the zoo and whale watching at best. I have fond memories of these activities as a young traveller but had no idea of the wealth the city has to offer. By Jessica Infantino Trumble

A

fter returning as an adult, three things in particular stood out to me as to why San Diego is a great destination to visit – 1) the proximity and ease of getting to and from the airport, 2) near-perfect weather with highs in the 70s and lows in the 60s YEAR-ROUND and 3) the sheer volume and variety of things to see and do in the city and surrounding area. And while this is most certainly not an exhaustive list, here are some of my top 10 favourites from my most recent trip.

1. Coronado Island You can’t miss the impressive bridge that sweeps over the water to connect Coronado Island with Downtown, and whether you arrive by car or ferry you’re definitely in for a treat. This adorable island community with its charming turn-of-the-century houses

and yards that overflow with brightly coloured flowers, succulents and other plants is ripe for exploring on foot or by renting a bike. Visit the Coronado Ferry Landing, which offers a variety of shopping and dining options as well as great waterfront views of the city skyline. Another recommended spot for a casual lunch is the European-style café Tartine, serving delicious grilled panini sandwiches, salads and bakery treats. The jewel of the island is the historic Hotel del Coronado. Built in 1888, this beachfront resort oozes with retro glamour and served as a location for the 1958 movie Some Like it Hot starring Marilyn Monroe, Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon. The iconic red and white structure also anchors boardwalk along one of Coronado Island’s best beaches – Central Beach, a beautiful soft sand beach that makes for the perfect place to soak up the sun. www.coronadovisitorcenter.com

2. Balboa Park Exploring Balboa Park is like a treasure trove of surprises just waiting to be surprised. Dating back to 1868, the 1,200 acre cultural and recreational space was the site of two World’s Fairs in 1915 and 1935, which left a lasting mark on the park today. Its home to more than 8 THE MARKET PLACE

a dozen AMAZING museums as well as a variety of gardens, pavilions and performance spaces right in the heart of Downtown San Diego. Take a ride on the vintage carousel or miniature train, browse the beautiful work at the Spanish Art Village or spend the day visiting the world-class San Diego Zoo. There truly is something for everyone at Balboa Park. www.balboapark.org

3. San Diego Zoo Speaking of the zoo, San Diego’s is second to none. This iconic destination spans 100 acres and is home to almost every animal under the sun (more than 3,700 animals from 668 species and subspecies to be exact). The San Diego Zoo is well organized and easy to navigate, with a great pictorial map of the various animal areas and helpful “trails” that list approximate walking times so you can plan your day accordingly. There’s so much to see and experience (with or without kids) that a 2-visit pass may be worth your while. Or make it a double date with the animals and visit the San Diego Zoo Safari Park located about a half an hour away in Escondido. www.sandiegozoo.org continued on page 10

4. La Jolla For a beach day some of the most picturesque can be found a short drive north in La Jolla. Take advantage of free street parking and walk along the ice plant carpeted cliffs that overlook the gorgeous blue-green jewel-toned ocean. Cuvier Park is a great spot for a scenic picnic lunch before hiking down to the otherworldly tide pools, where at low tide (usually around mid-day) you can observe the community of crabs, fish and other sea creatures who live in the puddles. Head to the Children’s Pool for an up-close look at seals lazily sunning themselves on the appropriately named Seal Rock, or La Jolla Cove for a relaxing afternoon at the beach. Another favourite is the cove at Shell Beach, where the rocky coastline makes way to fine sand and is the perfect place to take in the golden sun and sparkling sea. www.lajollabythesea.com

5. Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve Head a little more north of La Jolla to explore the outdoors at Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve. This protected reserve is one of only two places in the US that the twisted Torrey pine tree grows, clinging to sandstone cliffs that offer great ocean views. You’ll find several easy to moderate hiking trails, most of which are around a mile or less, ranging from the scenic Guy Fleming Loop to the dramatic decent of the Beach Trail. Torrey Pines is a nice mini break from the city and wonderful way to experience a truly beautiful piece of nature. www.torreypine.org

Today it’s a museum with an extensive collection of restored planes, plus tons of other exhibits and activities including a flight simulator and self-guided tour narrated by former Midway soldiers themselves. Beyond the museum, the area is also home to the Unconditional Surrender statue (modeled after the iconic sailor and nurse kissing in Times Square on V-J Day) and life-like statues commemorating Bob Hope’s salute to soldiers. www.midway.org

8. Little Italy

This well-preserved neighbourhood wears its red, white and green stripes proudly and is where you’ll find some pretty amazing Italian eateries ranging from out-of-this world Neapolitan-style pizza at Isola Pizza to post-dinner gelato 6. Carlsbad Flower Fields at Pappalecco. It’s a fun and festival If you’re visiting San Diego in the spring place for an evening stroll (passeggiata, then the Flower Fields at Carlsbad Ranch as the Italians like to call it) or peoplewatching from one of the red bistro is a must-do. Here you’ll find row after tables on the pedestrianized Piazza row of brightly coloured ranunculus della Famiglia. On Saturdays Little Italy spread across more than 50 acres, plus plays host to a HUGE farmers’ market other decorative gardens, kids activities that spans Date Street across 5 blocks and special events from March through mid-May. It’s a truly amazing experience from Kettner Boulevard to Front Street, featuring 175+ vendors selling local to say the least. Changing tariffs is easy and free, you’ll need to locate your Unified Supply Point Code CUPS number on your bill – an alphanumeric code starting with ES – to quote when speaking with the company.

c. With Either Option… Don’t forget that there are lots of new companies on the market with decent tariffs, you don’t need to go with one of the well-known names. Even if a smaller company stops trading, your electricity will never be cut off. Why? Smaller companies do not generate power, they simply buy and sell it on the free market. One of the bigger companies always has overall responsibility for the supply and this is shown on the invoice. Saving: Between the cheapest and most expensive tariffs, over 200 euros per year

Maintenance Service Contracts – Are They Worthwhile? Well, it depends. Do you have a separate boiler contract? If so, then you may find that you’re duplicating payment. Remember, lots of special tariffs have a mandatory maintenance contract. If your home is quite new, you may be paying for nothing. For older homes if may be worthwhile. Saving: Around 10 euros per month.

MSS Tips More ways to save: n Regulate your air con/heating! The recommended temperature for your home is 18 to 21ºC. Reducing the setting by a couple of degrees means more savings. n If you have a maintenance contract and change provider, the maintenance contract will NOT be cancelled by your current supplier. The maintenance contract is included on your normal bills “for your convenience”, but it’s also a sneaky way to make sure you carry on paying as many people won’t notice a monthly payment of around 10 euros. If you decide to cancel your maintenance contract, you must specifically inform the company. n Don’t listen to anyone visiting your home to “check your bill”. They will NEVER offer you the best tariff as they work commission-only. Previously this was a way to get people’s personal data to change contracts without their knowledge, however all contracts must now be signed to avoid fraud or agreed by telephone.

First Driving Impressions KIA e-Niro, European Press Launch, Nice

My experience of electric cars has been mixed over the past few years, from cars with a very poor range to those with a better range - but take forever to charge.

I

t was down to the South of France to drive the KIA e-Niro and we didn’t really know what to expect. On paper it looked brilliant, but often when you drive a car it does not live up to the hype. We got into the pure Electric e-Niro at Nice airport. Ours showed it was 91% charged and had a range of 395km. That looks impressive we thought. But we were sure it would not go far before the range dropped dramatically. Off we set, and soon had the motorway and the hills in sight. If anything was going to use the battery, this sort of driving would make the range go down quickly. The e-Niro is quick and goes from 0-60mph in 7.5 seconds, but it did feel even quicker than this. Acceleration is effortless, it just keeps going. Like all electric cars there is no lag, no waiting for the engine to wake up. Just put your foot on the accelerator and its off. There is the feeling of ‘range-anxiety’ whenever you get into an Electric Vehicle. Will it get you there? Will the range suddenly drop for no reason? Will you struggle to find a charging point in case of an emergency? The emergency being running of out battery power. Setting off in the e-Niro was no different. Although it was showing 395 km range, we were not too sure just how far it would actually go. Previous experience had taught us to be cautious. But after travelling 59 km to the first coffee stop of the day, we had still got 345 km range left. We continued driving after the break and a similar story, the range went down very steadily with no heart stopping moments. The car we drove was fitted with a 64 kWh Lithium ion polymer battery that can be charged from empty to 80% in less than an hour at a fast charger or around 4 hours using a standard home plug. This is a much improved time for charging, especially given the fact it has such a good range. The e-Niro is a proper SUV, with plenty of room for five adults and loads of room for luggage or goods in the boot. Despite the boot having the battery under its floor it didn’t look to have lost much space. Despite it being an EV, the Niro is a very practical and flexible vehicle, and is very useable. As we drove this KIA more and more, our confidence in it grew. 14 THE MARKET PLACE

I think for the very first time in recent years when we have driven many electric cars, and vans, I actually felt as though I could actually use one of these as a full time car. If charging points were more plentiful and in more locations then there would be no reason I could see, not to drive one - except maybe the price. I did think though whilst driving the e-Niro about its Zero emissions and our motorways, and one I use quite a lot, the M1 near Sheffield where the speed limit is often reduced to 60 mph or even on occasions 50 mph in a bid the reduce, or improve air quality and pollution. But does that apply to electric vehicles that don’t emit nasty things? I guess it does. It seems ironic that a truck can carry on at 56mph in these zones, but the car driver has to drop their speed. If a car has to drop by 10 mph, then so should a HGV. We had lunch on the ground floor of the hotel overlooking the Mediterranean, and then we had a very good presentation explaining the cars system in full. It did appear that the Koreans have thought of everything. This car is full of all the things you need and has a high level of standard equipment. The EV system is very easy to use, and very intuitive, within a few minutes you have got the hang of how it all works and how to get the best out of it, for both economy, saving the battery and getting the most power. All very clever stuff. After the presentation on Level 0 it was back into the cars - so we went from Zero to Niro. The cars had not been charged but we still had plenty of range left, so we set off again along the South Coast of France, in the sunshine, with no worries at all about the range. We knew it had plenty left so that Range Anxiety had long gone. The KIA e-Niro is due in the UK this month, with prices starting from £32,995, after the deduction of the Plug-In Grant. The e-Niro was surprising, well put together in every respect and full of goodies. The range was exceptional, which was the most surprising thing. The price though will put many off, but consider its low running costs and this outweighs the initial costs. Like all other KIA’s it comes with a 7-year, 100,000 mile fully transferable warranty.

Three reasons to buy life insurance A proven product that everyone should protect themselves with. Life insurance is a necessary purchase that has the benefit of giving you and your family peace of mind. There are many different types of cover that can be tailored to suit your needs and lifestyle.

Life insurance not only provides financial protection in the event of death but it is also a savings product that offers benefits that are becoming ever more extensive and customisable, so it is not surprising that, after car and home insurance, it is the third most contracted insurance cover in Spain. The average profile of a person who contracts life insurance is a married male aged between 35 and 44 years old, but it is never too late or early to take out a policy.

1. Arrange a mortgage to buy a house In Spain, six out of ten homes are bought with a mortgage. In this case, it is advisable to take out life insurance because, in case of death or permanent disability of the person who contracted the mortgage, the insurer will take over the payments to the bank and remove your partner or relatives from the economic responsibility that could be difficult to continue with. In fact, with most banks it is a pre-requisite as a guarantee before signing the mortgage. Until recently, banking entities conditioned their mortgage lending with an "obligation" to contract some linked products, such as Life insurance. But since a few years ago, with the approval of the European Parliament of the Mortgage Credit Directive, banks are prohibited by law from linking a mortgage to the purchase of insurance. You only need that your insurance company includes a clause in your policy registering your lending bank as the mortgage beneficiary. In that way, you comply with the request of the bank but you also save money. You could even save a difference of 700 euros as the products offered by the bank can be up to 300% more expensive.

10 practical ideas for an orderly home

When you are exhausted from work and just want to get home, you dream of a nice and cozy space with everything in it’s place. To achieve it, among other things, it takes order. Order is essential in our life because an excess of objects and mess scattered around the house without organisation can seriously affect our physical and mental health and wellbeing. Ikea know perfectly well that disorder brings frustration and is a drain on your every day life. In addition, it is a constant source of worry and generates a feeling of guilt that is difficult to cope with on a daily basis. Did you know that there are things that can help you keep your home more orderly? We propose ten practical ideas that you can find in Ikea to achieve it. 1. No More Paper How many times do you have to deal with stacks of paper, among which there are invoices, junk post and notes from your children’s school? This mountain of paper needs reviewing daily or it just accumulates on your table. You can help yourself by using cardboard filing cabinets (they look really beautiful too) or by filing trays, in which to keep the letters safe.

2. Dirty Clothes Are you are one of those people who persecute their children and family for not picking up dirty clothes? You can get serious help by using: laundry baskets for laundry!! They are so small and look great that you can install one in each room of the house, so that nobody will be tempted to leave dirty socks and pants on the floor again!

open another, when we had another one already started. To avoid this you can organise your pantry in transparent bottles with labels. This means that you can easily find what you are looking for at a glance, which will help you quickly find the ingredient you need. Also, since the bottles will have a hermetic seal the foodstuffs will keep fresh for longer and no nasty insects will be able to get in.

3. Organise the Food

4. 1001 Kitchen Utensils

Whilst shopping at the supermarket we often think that we do not have a certain staple food at home, like flour for instance, and we buy a new packet. Or at home we simply

Most of our kitchens look practically like a mechanical workshop. We have gadgets for almost everything. The problem is in keeping them organised. Ikea sells hundreds of different trays, boxes and shelves of all colours and materials. So you can store all the utensils you have in the kitchen in a way that you will always be able to find what you are looking for.

5. The Bathroom In addition to the kitchen, there is another room in the house in which items get in a total mess, personal hygiene products end up clogging the cupboards and cabinets. You have to be rational when buying them and you also have to throw them away when necessary. Those that are essential you can store in baskets, cans and shelves. In this way you will find it easy to locate them and you will never buy more creams and potions than you need.

6. What is Under your Bed? Often a lot of dust! So ... why not take advantage of this space for storage? Some beds include drawers at the bottom, so that this useless space can be used to store bedspreads, cushions or clothes. Others are hinged so they can be opened to reveal that cavernous space beneath, resulting in a practical storage solution.

which conceal any loose cables so that the area looks a lot tidier.

10. Toys in their Place Enter a house with small children and you are greeted with a plethora of toys, dolls and pieces of lego to trip over! If this is the most accurate description of your home, your house is screaming out for storage solutions to help. There are plenty of boxes and bags especially designed for this purpose that can become the solution to part of your problem. You then just have to make sure the kids put the toys away!

7. Winter Clothing v Summer Clothing Having both winter and summer clothing in our drawers and wardrobe can add to the clutter. If you are overwhelmed by the piles of clothes, you can use an interesting resource: boxes and organisers can help you separate clothes better because you know you are not going to need those bikinis in December.

8. Take Advantage of the Walls Sometimes we forget that the walls can become perfect spaces for storage, especially so if you are limited with overall space. Trays, containers and even bags can be hung on the wall. If you need more space, you can also choose shelves and modular systems that you can organise accordingly.

9. Hide those Cables Many of our devices already work without wires, but we still have many others that need to be plugged in, and often become entangled and scrambled. They also work well as accumulators of dust. What can we do? Well, you have cable strips, organiser boxes with a lid and even bags,

In the second part the council confirm that there is information on the Designation of Origin of raisins from Malaga, with historical references, data on the Muscat variety, the production area, the production process and the physical and chemical characteristics.

A sub delegate of the government in Malaga, Maria Gamez has confirmed that the water treatment plant in Nerja will be operational this year. Although no dates could be confirmed at this stage. In addition, regarding the investigation by the courts into discharge of untreated waste water on the coast of Nerja and Coin, Gamez said that the operation is under investigation. No comment was made but many people have now seen the images of the bottom of the sea in Nerja where 9 tonnes of wipes have accumulated, it seems without purification. Gamez said, "We need to do everything we can to improve sanitation and clean water. All administrations in the Malaga area must do their bit. We are commited to executing the works in Nerja as soon as possible".

The dog beach of Torre del Mar is aspiring for the Q for Quality

The four party government team in Velez Malaga are determined to cash in on the sale of the municipal land assets of the Velez Malaga City Council. A negotiating procedure has been opened with the potential of earning 4.6 million euros.

The Guardia Civil confirmed that they located the body and that it is that of a middle aged man. The circumstances surrounding his death were unknown at the time of going to print. However, because of the time and place in which it was found there is speculation that it may be a suicide.

Eight plots are being put up for sale and these funds from the sale of these will go towards investments into projects for Velez, such as the remodelling of the Puerta de Antequera street, the Jimenez Puerta plaza, the new theatre in Torre del Mar and improvements to the Teatro del Carmen.

The corpse was transferred by the Civil Protection to a shelter where the judicial committee will take over. The event caused a stir on the Balcon with Police cordoning off the famous viewpoint.

One of these plots has been taken by Trops, the local agri food company. The seven remaining plots, located in the area of El Romeral, have been assigned for residential use. Two owners have acquired two plots each and the rest have been awarded to three other people who have met all necessary purchasing requirements.

The dog beach in Torre del Mar aims to become the first in Andalucia with the highest certification awarded by Q for Quality. This was announced by the Deputy Mayor Jesus Perez Atencia.

TECH - Best Smartphone Challengers Premium smartphones weigh in with a hefty price tag but can growing brands premium models, with a slightly lower price, match the dizzy heights of Samsung and Apple?

OnePlus 6T E549 amazon.es With a premium feel & look, curved glass back and screen covering the whole phone with just a dewdrop notch on the top middle of the phone this is a classy piece of kit with a great price tag. The battery lasts around 13 hours and there is fast charging speed with a wire. The OnePlus 6T has a Qualcomm Snapdragon845 chipset with 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage, needless to say it runs nice and smooth. There is also an in-display fingerprint reader. The camera performance is excellent with a 16MP and 20MP which produce sharp, realistic photos in well lit environments. The 6T is a no-brainer for people seeking a stylish phone, especially if you don't want to pay top whack.

Huawei Mate 20Pro D797 amazon.es This phone is a real challenger to the iphone X and Samsung market. With it's AMOLED screen which is curved and supports HDR it really is an eye catching offering. The back of the phone is glass with a metal casing and depending on what colour you choose, it can be interesting. The Twilight shade option shifts between blue and purple. The phone has some serious power with an octa core kirin 980 chipset. The iphone X has the edge slightly for speed but the mate 20pro is the leader in the android market. The camera is perhaps the highlight of this phone with 3 lenses in the back. A 40MP wide angle lens, a 20MP ultra wide and an 8MP telephoto one. So you can take shots from various perspectives. It also has an fingerprint and face scanner. Overall a fantastic phone with not much against it but the price (but no higher than it's big rivals). This thing really delivers.

Google Pixel 3 D724 from google.com Google Pixel 3 is another great alternative to Apple or Samsung. This phone comes in a smaller size than the other two examples with a 5.5 inch screen but google have proven that you don't need a huge phone to get great photos. It has a single back lens but also has machine learning camera software included for better photos. There are two 8MP front facing 30 THE MARKET PLACE

cameras and a colour rich OLED screen. The battery falls a little short of the bigger phones, lasting all day with conservative use. It comes in either 64GB or 128GB and no headphone jack, which seems to be the standard with new phones on the market. This phone is ideal for anyone who cares about photo quality as it has the camera smarts built in and unlike the iphone X, it's cheap... at least by 2019 standards.

Health, Body & Soul Love your life more with advice on how to lead a healthy lifestyle

Potato vs sweet potato: which is healthier?

A common hormonal imbalance could be making you fat

Insulin resistance is a clinical condition that precedes type 2 diabetes. Those who have it will struggle to lose weight via traditional methods because their body is not burning fuel the right way. Insulin is a hormone secreted by the pancreas and used to digest carbs. When carbs are consumed, insulin is secreted to take glucose from the food to the muscles for energy. Insulin may fail to work over time, that maybe due to weight gain or lack of physical activity or a genetic problem. As insulin is also a fat storing hormone the more of it that circulates the body the harder it is to burn body fat. High insulin levels make you tired, bloated and crave sugar. Individuals with insulin resistance also carry a lot of weight around their belly. People with insulin resistance need a reduced carb, incresed protein diet developed by a dietitian, as well as a training programme. The choice of carbs is also important, stick to Low GI carbs. Eliminate juice, white bread and refined cereals from your diet.

Although sugar does not have the same stigma attached to it as smoking, the truth is indulging on sweet treats could be as bad for you as lighting up a cigarette. 34 THE MARKET PLACE

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’re sure to have noticed the sweet potato's slow but steady rise to fame in recent years. After all, it’s sooo much healthier than white potato, right?

Sweet potato

White potato

Sure, sweet potatoes are full of goodness. They’re rich in ‘betacarotene’, which is converted to Vitamin A in the body and is important for eye health. Beta-carotene also has antioxidant properties and works to protect your body’s cells from damage. What’s more, sweet potatoes have a low glycaemic index, meaning they provide slow-burning energy (in comparison to white potatoes which typically have a higher GI and a more rapid effect on your blood sugar). Plus, sweet potatoes are a stand-out for gut-loving fibre, with one small unpeeled sweet potato packing 5.9 grams - if you’re female and over the age of 19, that’s almost a quarter of your daily fibre needs.

Despite what you probably think, white potatoes offer good nutrition too (some people are even calling it the latest superfood). For one, they contain more immunity-boosting Vitamin C than sweet potatoes, and two, they’re a good source of potassium which is key for heart and muscle function. Potatoes are also a source of resistant starch, which is a type of fibre that escapes digestion and is fermented in the bowel. It’s has a prebiotic effect, meaning it feeds the good bacteria in your gut and helps it to flourish. And while all potatoes contain resistant starch, white potatoes develop more than their orange cousin, particularly once they’ve been cooked and cooled down.

The verdict Low-carb supporters generally turn their nose up at these starchy veg, but hopefully you have enough common sense to see that potatoes aren’t actually the devil in disguise. White potato and sweet potato have some unique nutritional perks that are well worth including in your diet (in balance and moderation, of course). What’s more imperative when it comes to potato is how you actually prepare it. Anything deep fried isn’t the healthiest choice, so sorry, sweet potato chips are in the ‘treat foods’ basket along with the regular kind. What’s more, the quantity is also super important, so instead of digging in to a mountain of mash, fill just a quarter of your plate with potato (leaving plenty of room for veggies and a little lean protein), and you’re on the right track.

Health warnings about low carb diets It has become popular to think that carbs are bad for you and demonised as food that will lead to weight gain. Some recent studies have shown why low carb diets can be damaging to health. Research has found that those who got less energy from starchy foods (bread, pasta, potatoes) had higher changes of atrial fibrillation. (AFib). AFib is the most common type of irregular heartbeat and sufferers are 5 times more likely to have a stroke. These findings were from a long running study on heart disease risks in the US. Participants kept a regular food and exercise log and 22 years later 1,900 of them developed AFib. Researchers found that those who got fewer than 45% of calories from carbs were 18% more likely to develop AFib than people who ate a moderate amount of carbs. Researchers speculate that this is the case because those who eat low carbs tend to opt for red meat and saturated fat which has been linked to increased inflammation and cardiovascular conditions.

Semana Santa

Malaga Natura 5th to 7th April

Semana Santa or Holy Week is a big deal all across Spain. Every city, town and village participate by holding processions to remember the Easter story. Although religion plays less of a part now in the average Spanish person's life, when it comes to Easter the whole community are out on the streets to commemorate this significant event in the calendar. The processions involve large thrones (or tronos in Spanish) that are carried by the individual brotherhoods, who put in lots of work throughout the year to get the right music and mood to go with their particular parade. The parades are extremely poignant and resplendent and can be a little sad in parts because the processions depict the story of the week of Jesus's death and resurrection. The events of Semana Santa are steeped in hundreds of years of tradition and history which make for an atmospheric and in parts almost euphoric occasion. Semana Santa parades are held in Nerja on 14th April (Palm Sunday), Wednesday 17th April, Thursday 18th April, Good Friday 19th April and Easter Sunday 21st April. Semana Santa is also a huge event in Velez Malaga and it is well worth heading to the Historic Centre to see the processions there that go on all week.

The 11th Feria of sustainable and healthy living is set to commence and this year there will be a bonsai exhibition that will bring the audience closer to this millenary technique. There will also be some children's activities on recycling and use of resources at the event.

Exhibition van gogh Alive Available until June 9th in Malaga Port. Open Sunday to Thursday 10am to 8pm and Friday and Saturday from 10am to 10pm.

This exhibition has 40 projectors on giant screens which immerse the visitor in the work of Vincent Van Gogh's work. This is a unique viewing experience, one like which you will have never seen before, definitely a must see. Entry costs 12 euros for adults and 9 euros for children and 10 euros for over 65s and students. Tickets can be purchased online or on the door.

Nancy Ruth Concert, Malaga

Verdial Day in Periana 6th - 7th April

Canadian Nancy Ruth and her 5 piece band perform at La Nave on Calle Cerrajerosm Malaga on Friday 12th April at 9.30pm. She composes all the pieces herself and brings together a fusion of jazz, flamenco and latin rhythms. Tickets are 8 euros on the door.

Periana expects more than 15,000 visitors during the celebration of the 20th edition of the gastronomic festival of the town's olive oil. The day of the verdial oil will include activities during the evening of Sunday 7th where there will be folkloric performances and tastings of the oil and other local 36 THE MARKET PLACE

delicacies taking place. The oil of Periana is an important commodity for the area of the Axarquia and one of the strong exports of the region. The verdial variety has an astonishing flavour and body and can be added to multiple dishes such as salads and is used by the best chefs.

Playa Patrol beach clean up

A total of 31 team captains and 583 volunteers representing 27 countries including Australia, Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Denmark, Estonia, Ethiopia, Finland, Germany, Kenya, Latvia, Mexico, New Zealand, Norway, Palestine, Poland, Russia, Slovakia, Spain, Sweden, UK, Ukraine, USA, Venezuela, Wales and Zimbabwe, including families and children and CD Almuñécar City Football Club participated in the PLAYA PATROL SPRING CLEAN THE BEACH event that took place at Playa San Cristóbal and Playa Velilla in Almuñécar and Playa La Herradura. There was even a beach clean up by volunteers at Playa Cabopino (Marbella) to show their support. Special thanks to all the volunteers for their dedication and hard work to help keep our sea plastic free. “Expanding the beach clean ups to multiple beaches and multiple towns on the same date is a major undertaking and would be impossible without the hard work of Ocean Ambassadors, Christopher Jenkins, Dita Grunte, Rafa Coehlo, Ann-Marie Bönström and Rolf Hedberg,” said Ann Jenkins, Director of Asociación PLAYA PATROL. “There were stories from so many parents about the impact that the beach clean up has on their children.” According to Liliia DeCos, originally from the Ukraine, who lives in La Herradura at the moment and is travelling the world with her husband and 2 daughters, “My daughters Lia and Ksenia are 2 and 4 years old and after attending the first community beach clean up last year, they were so excited to help out again. The girls continue to draw pictures and talk with their friends about the dangers of plastic straws and bottle caps to fish and other creatures that live in the sea. Now when they see litter on the street or the beach, they stop to pick it up. For me, I had no idea

the dangers posed by cigarette butts to marine life and learned a lot just by participating in a beach clean up.” “Obviously everyone that came out today is passionate about helping to keep our sea plastic free and with so many international people participating, it felt as though a global inter-cambio was underway,” said Ann-Marie Bönström, Ocean Ambassador for Playa Velilla, originally from Sweden.

for providing the volunteers at Playa Velilla with an extra treat: homemade ice cream. A special thank you to Asociación Chiringuitos Costa Tropical for their financial support, to Costa Tropical Tourism and Carbonell for assistance with the project.

From the plastic pollution collected by the 30 teams, it is obvious that cigarette butts and micro-plastics are a big threat to the sea. Teams collected 40,000 cigarette butts and 430kg of litter in just under 1.5 hours and came across a wide variety of plastic pollution and other litter including rope, fishing line, broken umbrellas and beach chairs, fishing nets, tetra paks, batteries and drinking straws. The volunteers delivered the collected garbage to the various END ZONES for group photos and then helped carry it to the trucks courtesy of Town Hall, Department of Environment. Each beach was treated to drinks and tapas at one of three local chiringuitos: Chiringuito Bambú (La Herradura), Restaurante El Calabré (Playa San Cristóbal) and Chiringuito La Primera Ola (Playa Velilla). Manish's Zodiac predictions - April Manish Kumar Arora, K.P. Astrologer, Numerologist, Tarot Card Reader & Vastu Consultant Facebook: manishastroconsultant email: manish@manishastrologer.com

Aries ( 21 March – 19 April )

You are mentally adventurous, ready and willing to learn, into “mind expansion”, and less attached to your values. You are forced to begin seeing others as separate individuals, and to improve the manner in which you relate to and with others. Make sure that you are engaging in due diligence regarding your body and health through this period, as it will be all too easy to forget those needs and slide into physical difficulties.

Taurus ( 20 April – 20 May )

Libra ( 23 September – 22 October )

You will learn through the course of this period to depend on yourself and to take pride in yourself for what you really are, not only how others see you. Romantic relationships might be tested during this time. You might feel overwhelming pressure coming from your casual love affairs, or the flaws in an existing romance seem to be screaming out at you.

Scorpio ( 23 October – 21 November )

You might find that inner and personal experiences are more important to you than more worldly ones during this cycle. You might recycle a fond old memory into a new chapter in your career, no matter how far you've come since. How you entertain yourself, how you have fun, and issues surrounding how you manage your ego are now coming up for “inspection”.

If you work hard at self-improvement, you will be one step closer to knowing where you are headed, and you will have re-built faith in yourself and your beliefs. A shaky feeling that causes you to splutter and avoid risks will be replaced with a more mature attitude towards adventure and facing the unknown. You are worth something, and you deserve compensation for what you do.

You might consider fine-tuning your talents and skills with higher education or experience during this cycle. You might have the opportunity to reach a broader audience and share your ideas and projects with more people. You would likely make significant changes to your relationships, leave behind a romance, or strengthen your stance on how you will derive pleasure from your life.

It’s time to be more conservative with your money, and feel more accomplished in so doing. You would learn to love yourself and take pride in yourself. Looking outside of yourself for “ego strokes” (whether through romance or other such “applause”) may prove to be fruitless. You might encounter opposition or resistance to your personal plans and goals, which forces you to re-evaluate your current projects or commitments.

Gemini ( 21 May – 20 June)

Sagittarius ( 22 November -21 December )

Cancer ( 21 June – 22 July )

Capricorn ( 22 December – 19 January )

Furthering your personal ambitions and interests comes more easily during this cycle. At times, you may feel like the sky is the limit. Ideals and spiritual goals that you may have taken for granted or worked with for many years might suddenly seem superficial or not particularly useful anymore. This is a cycle in which you need to define, understand, and crystallize your significant relationships with others.

Leo ( 23 July – 22 August )

You may be laying groundwork and building a long-term project that eventually has much significance in your life. The amount of satisfaction you are deriving from your relationship, the quality of the relationship itself, and how you view your partner are all things that you are examining now. Disillusionment is a possibility, as you are beginning to see your relationship without rosecoloured glasses now.

Virgo ( 23 August – 22 September )

You need to make a few changes in your life, and you now have the courage and drive to do so. Just be careful that you recognize the areas of your life that are dear to your heart. New learning experiences as well as “life” experiences (travel, adventures, contacts with others of a vastly different culture than yours, and so forth) are likely to emerge. 42 THE MARKET PLACE

You may find new and exciting channels for self-expression.You want to know what you can do, in terms of raw potential, in real terms. Your mind is on your purpose or “mission” in life, and your desire for success is stronger than ever. Your potential is called up for inspection. You are called to express your worth and calibre in measurable, concrete ways.

Aquarius ( 20 January – 18 February )

You have a more mature grasp of your own capabilities, you project a more responsible, perhaps serious, and self-assured personality to others. You are especially open to receiving grounded, practical advice, and benefit from humbly learning from others. You are likely to discover your true needs from partnerships, as well as what you can realistically give to a partner. You may take special joy in sharing a common cause or ideals with others.

Pisces ( 19 February – 20 March )

This month brings a fair measure of reality and objectivity, so that whatever relationships you have will be defined and re-defined. Relationships are seen now as serious things. Responsibilities to partners, the need to compromise, and the realities of the needs of others, become clear. Your spiritual world, compassion, private life, and tolerance expand and grow. Matters from the past are magnified in your life now.

The Anxiety Conversation At the start of the new millennium, my world came crashing down. I knew I had to make drastic life-or-death changes and was lucky that through self-help groups I found the right people at the time. Then while I continued to help myself, I was also in the privileged position of being able to help others. By David Hurst

So I started looking around everywhere for people who knew about what makes people tick – about the human condition if you will. I’ve written health articles for national newspapers and magazines in Britain and around the world, so I was very thorough at this research. From everywhere, through books and the internet and people I met, I discovered amazing people who are world-renowned with good reason, such as Wayne Dyer, Eckhart Tolle, Scott Peck and Viktor Frankl. What they have to say and their understanding of life is excellent. Year after year my life seemed to grow and I pretty much lost the anxiety, and of course while not everything was perfect, overall my life undoubtedly progressed in the right direction for me. I'm very fortunate. Turmoil did happen, such as the two-year worsening illness of my father until he passed away a few years ago, or when my best friend Tim reached out to me for help but then after two months of intensive chatting I discovered that he had ended his life. That changed my perspective on life, so much that my wife Debs and I sold our house and bought a motorhome to travel in to visit family and friends. In the next few years, we visited about 350 friends and family members and travelled around 13 countries. Spain was one of them, and we kept finding ourselves drawn back to Nerja.

44 THE MARKET PLACE

Then it returned with a vengeance. It was because I became complacent. I stopped talking to people and reading and listening to or watching the sort of stuff that had helped me so much. I had a hideous couple of months, although no one would have known from looking at me. Like a lot of this, it was all going on inside. Feeling bewildered I arranged to meet several friends for a coffee in Nerja. When I arrived, not really feeling like going but forcing myself, there was only one free seat left round the table in Plaza de Cavana. I wanted to turn around and run. But I’m so happy I sat down now! The guy I sat next to was from Manchester and called Wayne Kemp and he told me he’d been a psychotherapist in Ireland for 25 years. We got on great and I started chatting with him every week for long talks about everything. What I heard astounded me, and I’d finish chatting with him each time and think: "Wow! This really needs to be out there, this guy knows his stuff better than anyone I’ve ever read, listened to or watched. This can help everyone, especially those really suffering." It was outstanding. I kept thinking this for several months and his knowledge on how to help with everything that affects people just continued to amaze me. In fact, it got increasingly breathtaking. He just had it all completely sussed and everything he said made perfect sense. I put his suggestions into my life – and where things had been good before, until that couple of patchy months, now they rocketed! I had a real spring in my step, plus I was able to start helping lots of people again. They too found their lives getting back on track and then going way beyond and better than anything they’d ever known. One morning early last summer I had the eureka moment for what should have been obvious all along – I was a

writer, so together we could put out Wayne’s knowledge and information in a book. I put that to him and we started immediately, there and then – with a great many of the interviews and the writing taking place in Nerja. Wayne came up with the title, The Anxiety Conversation, explaining that whatever people are struggling with – whether it is depression, addiction to something including alcoholism, OCD, bipolar, and of course anxiety itself – that having anxiety is all a substantial part of it. So now the book is recently published and the reaction is phenomenal. We’ve had people contact us to say it’s a “masterpiece”, “a major work”, and such as “it has amazing insights on every single page” – and what is music to my ears “this book can help everyone with any problem”. Both Wayne and I have known first-hand what it can be like when a deep dark hole opens, and we think it’s vital that anyone gets help from someone who’s actually been there and got out. Self-help books are massively popular now, with a 20 per cent rise in sales in Britain in the past 12 months alone, but nearly all of them are about merely surviving in the dark depths of such as depression or anxiety or whatever is the condition. This is definitely not the case. Wayne explains how they are there to encourage us to thrive in live instead. So the book details how the pain of mental health issues is actually the message for people to make changes and to grow positively in the direction that they need. The pain is how it gets our attention, and as with physical pain it’s telling us something, such as to move away or stop doing what you’re doing or that you need some help now. It’s the resistance to this

what they eat, what they drink, what they smoke, how little exercise they do and how much they worry about things. So it’s very important to get that side of it right. The other thing is, you have to find the meaning and purpose for your existence and to realise whatever you do, whatever you believe – whether you’re an atheist or whatever you are – that you’re not here to stay, you’re passing through. The meaning and purpose in your life is all within you. D: And everyone who has been given the gift of life has a meaning and purpose? W: Nobody is left out, we all have meaning, we all have purpose, talents and abilities – and once you look inside you’ll find your answers. Most people’s relationship with the feeling that time is ticking down, is running out, is to find an Grow old greatly escape from the sensation, a distraction, to take a drink or a drug or shop, work, D: How can we deal with ageing? W: The most important thing with age, first eat. Alternatively many people just make love to the fear and instead of the pain and foremost, is what you are doing in your life. People frequently eat themselves being seen as a warning it becomes an obsession. older, drink themselves older, smoke themselves older, worry themselves older So you have to find meaning and purpose to answer the human condition. I believe and then they have a lack of exercise in their lives. All these things make you older that’s part of why we are here. much quicker. Exercise is essential for I’ve met quite a few people who say that everyone. Find whatever exercise it is that when you die that’s the end of it, and they you enjoy. It’s got to be fun. do not seem to have any of the same sufferings I have in this world. They don’t You need to look at your mental, physical have the oversensitivity, they don’t have and spiritual way of being. Of course we the dream about meaning and purpose. all get older, but you can get older far That just seems to be how they are. They healthier than you think. So many people don’t appear to be conscious of any big have severe problems when they get question. older – but you can see why they do from pain that causes the greatest and longterm suffering. But my experience and of those thousands of others that Wayne has helped over the years is that from the pain or discomfort you can know the best life you’ve ever known. So I fully believe we have created a mesmerising book here, and I agree wholeheartedly with its accolades so far – and I can say that humbly as all I did was ask the questions. It’s Wayne that has gathered the fantastic knowledge and we both feel very fortunate that we can now pass that on to help as many people as possible. Here's a sample chapter from The Anxiety Conversation about getting older, or how to grow old greatly…

D: Are too many of us obsessed with time? W: Human beings are totally obsessed with time, especially in the modern age. Everyone wants to have everything done and dusted by the time they’re 30. And if it’s not done by 30, then it’s going to be done by 35. Then when they get to 40 it becomes 50, and by then if it hasn’t happened they give up. So do not fall for one of the Lower Power’s time-traps, such as that you better make up for the lost time – or the really big one that is thinking: I’m too old for this and I’m never going to do it now. You’re never too old to develop in life. I’ve read about people who never did any exercise at all who started running marathons in their 50s and 60s. Then here I am improving my tennis game, improving my linguistic ability, learning more about science than I’ve ever learned before, still growing spiritually, and I’m three-quarters of the way through my life, I think, or maybe two-thirds… D: I like the realisation that actually this isn’t our time anyway, that we’ve been granted this time… There has to be a meaning and purpose for that.

Micronutrients - Fluoride An essential mineral for healthy teeth, fluoride is stored in the body as calcium fluoride. But only 10% of the population in both the UK and Spain receive fluoridated water to promote dental health. In the UK the Water Act 2003 required water suppliers to comply with requests from local health authorities to fluoridate the water but not all water companies complied with this at the time. In the US things are a little different. The American Dental Association recommends water fluoridation as a safe, effective means of protecting against cavities and reducing tooth decay by 20 percent to 40 percent. Despite numerous studies showing safety and efficacy, water fluoridation sparks a heated debate. Roles in health Fluoride protects teeth by strengthening the enamel, making it more resistant to acid and demineralization and thereby preventing cavities. Fluoride also helps remineralize enamel, reverse early signs of tooth decay and can prevent growth of harmful oral bacteria. A 2015 Cochrane review questioned the impact of fluoride on cavities in adults, yet two government reviews concluded water fluoridation is effective in decreasing the prevalence and severity of cavities among adults and children. The CDC estimates fluoridated water reduces tooth decay by 25 percent among children and adults. Current recommendations Because insufficient data was available to set a Recommended Dietary Allowance, an Adequate Intake of fluoride was established in 1997. In 2015, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services revised the optimal fluoride level to 0.7 ppm for dental health. Concerns about dental fluorosis, a condition in which excess fluoride causes white lines or specks on children’s teeth, spurred this change from the 1962 recommendation of 0.7 to 1.2 ppm. 46 THE MARKET PLACE

In areas with naturally higher fluoride levels, communities must ensure the maximum level is below 4 ppm, a level considered hazardous. Signs of deficiency The only known sign of fluoride deficiency is an increased risk of cavities. Potential adverse effects Dental fluorosis can occur in children 8 and younger while teeth are still forming under the gums. Most cases of fluorosis are mild, affecting the appearance but not health of teeth. The National Research Council estimates the prevalence of severe dental fluorosis at near zero when fluoride concentrations are under 2 ppm. The incidence of fluorosis has increased primarily due to reconstituted infant formula made with fluoridated water and children swallowing toothpaste. Parents of infants exclusively fed prepared formulas are advised to use fluoride-free water to minimize the risk of mild fluorosis. Children younger than 6 should not use fluoridated mouthwash and should be discouraged from swallowing toothpaste. Skeletal fluorosis, also rare in the United States, involves the bones and joints. Early signs include nausea and vomiting, joint pain and stiffness that can advance over time to affect bone structure and increase risk of fractures. Risk for skeletal fluorosis occurs when consumption is above 6 ppm. A 2017 study suggested high levels of fluoride in utero could impact cognition and IQ, yet a 2015 study refutes that water fluoridation is neurotoxic and

lowers IQ. The Evidence Analysis Library’s Fluoride Systematic Review rated the association as having “limited evidence.” Numerous studies have reviewed the potential association between water fluoride levels and cancer; most have not found a strong link. Sources of fluoride Fluoride is found naturally in soil, water and food; it also is commonly added to toothpaste, mouthwash, dental gels, fillings, dental floss and water supplies. In the U.S., the largest source of fluoride is fluoridated water. Amounts vary between communities, bottled waters and well water. Fluoride in most foods is low, less than 0.5 ppm. Tea and foods that are fortified or mixed with water can have higher levels. Prescription supplements are available for children living in areas where water is not fluoridated. Bottom line Numerous studies support the safety of low-dose fluoridated water for dental health. Although in some countries, such as Germany they favour promoting good oral health by use of fluoridated salt and toothpaste, as well as fluoride tablets and washes, which are strongly encouraged. In countries where fluoride is added to the water supply, if desired, fluoride consumption can be lowered by drinking bottled water, using a fluoride filter for tap water and choosing fluoride-free toothpaste. Anyone concerned about excess fluoride consumption should consult a dentist.

C.A.S. (Costa Animal Society) 501 hours and counting… Last April the Costa Animal Society (CAS) undertook an assessment of their efforts over the preceding month and how that might relate to public policy. It was a simple experiment: How many hours did CAS volunteers contribute to our stated mission of attending to the homeless, and/or abandoned and abused dogs and cats in Nerja/Maro and its near environs. Without too much fanfare, drum roll please: 501 hours. So, how does this break down? We looked at the numbers and separated them into five categories: 1 2 3 4 5

Administration (correspondence, accounting, errand running, paperwork, monthly meetings, etc.) Fundraising, including the organising of events Retail (shop/Digame/press updates Animal rescue Animal care, fostering (no idea how to calculate this), vet visits, airport runs, socialisation, and probably about 18 other things.

One very interesting conclusion from this metric is HAPPY TALES

Rocky is a wonderful, young German Shepherd boy who was rescued by APA, the other local animal charity in Nerja. His story is an unfortunate tale of a cute and cuddly 4 month old pup adopted by a family who already owned a small male terrier. As Rocky matured into a full grown dog and began to assert his role in the family there was friction with the older terrier resulting in a serious clash. Sadly, Rocky was given up to CAS and because of a shortage of foster homes he was placed in kennels in February. He was then advertised for adoption in both social and print media in a cooperative effort between CAS and APA. This time the advertising in the local magazines by CAS proved successful as Rocky was seen by a nice English gentleman whose previous 50 THE MARKET PLACE

dog had died of cancer. The man had adopted his other dog from CAS eleven years prior and she had a wonderful life with him in the Frigliana campo. Rocky can now enjoy living with his new owner as a single companion without having to share his home with other dogs.

Lana is an elderly female Pointer cross whose owner died last year. Unfortunately, the family could not care for her so CAS housed her in kennels for 6 months until a place could be found for her. In cooperation with a sister group in Holland, CAS has found a forever home for Lana to live out her retirement years with a lovely Dutch couple.

CAS CAT CORNER CAS works very hard to keep the cat population in Nerja under control. When

that if the welfare of abused/abandoned animals was considered a community problem and as such a responsibility of town halls, all of the volunteer energy exhausted in categories 2,3, and 4 would disappear. (This 501 hour number is certainly a gross underestimate both in time and costs. Firstly, regarding hours; secondly, out of pocket expenses; and third, forth and fifthly, basically all that we do.) To read the full report and see our conclusions and recommendations visit our website:

casnerja.webs.com necessary we engage in the standard Trap-neuterreturn program described by the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals as “the most humane, effective and financially sustainable strategy for controlling freeroaming cat populations.” If you think that keeping cat populations in check in urban centres is a community problem, we couldn’t agree with you more. Unfortunately, CAS has to undertake this program relying only on its private donors. And despite the generosity of local veterinarians the cost of sterilizing the cats can making for shocking end of the month vet bills. For all cat lovers, CAS’s own Fiona has set up a fantastic Facebook page you can see here: /East of Malaga

nestles between the Punta de la Mona to the east and the rock of Cerro Gordo to the west. The bay enjoys shelter from west winds creating mostly crystal-clear waters, and is a popular location for water sports & paragliding. There are numerous beach bars and restaurants serving specialities of the region, including tropical salads, fresh fish or paella. The Marina del Este near La Herradura is tucked betwen Punta de la Mona to the west and Cotobro to the east. It boasts a beautiful port, elegantly designed to incorporate select shops, art galleries, bars and restaurants. This small strip of coast also claims to be the best place to dive between Almeria and Gibraltar, and is home to one of the areas leading diving schools.

Nerja

was once a sleepy fishing village but now the town has a population of over 21,000. The Balcón de Europa is a magnificent promenade that was made famous by King Alfonso XII , who’s statue now takes pride of place at the far end. Close by is the 17th century Church of El Salvador, and the beautiful gardens of Capistrano Playa. There are many beaches to be found either side and in front of the town, including Burriana with its numerous cafés and restaurants. Here too, you can take advantage of the water sports on offer, including water skiing, scuba diving and sailing. Just outside Nerja on the coast road towards Maro is a very impressive aquaduct which used to supply the local sugar factory.

Torre del Mar

is just 30 minutes from Malaga, and is the beach resort of Velez Málaga. Its population of 21,000 grows between June and September to 150,000. The towns attractions have expanded over the last few years to cope with the demand, and now the four kilometres of beach have been enhanced by an impressive promenade, which stretches all the way to Caleta de Vélez, a port providing over 200 berths and offering sailing and water sports. Throughout the summer, there are many Chiringuitos on the beach, serving fresh barbequed fish and ice cold beers. In 2002, Paseo de Larios was pedestrianized, and is now a tranquil promenade, with plenty of pavement cafés and restaurants. At the seafront end of Larios is a line of bars and discos which continue throughout the night on Fridays and Saturdays. The history of Torre is uncertain, but it is thought that it might have been part of an ancient Greek settlement, known as Mainake, which was destroyed by the Carthaginians. Tombs of the Carthaginians were found at the mouth of the river Velez. More recently, it was a small fishing village until major development began in the 1970’s.

is a 15 minute drive from the N340 Autovia, leaving at the junction for Velez Malaga. Head inland along the A356; this direction also leads to numerous inland white villages. The first turning on our map is to Benamocarra, which is sign posted to the right after the last roundabout into Velez Malaga. This road will take you back over the main road and then also on to Iznate, and divides to take you to Almachar, El Borge and Cutar. The second turning off the A356 is on the right (after the Repsol garage) to Trapiche. Continue on the A356, and immediately you will see another junction on the left, sign posted to Benamargosa, Triana, Comares and Cutar. This road will also take you as far as Rio Gordo (for a scenic drive). There is a popular Spanish bar on the corner of this junction called El Cruz. Back on the A356, continue on and you will pass another junction on the right, to Canillas de Aceituno, and finally you will see Lake Vinuela in front of you. Turn right before the lake for Puente de Don Manuel, Alcaucin, Viñuela and Periana; carry straight on for Los Romanes, Rio Gordo and Colmenar.

Frigiliana

encompass 39.74 sq km within which live just over 3,000 people year round. Frigiliana is a popular tourist destination, and because there are many holiday homes here, the population triples during the summer months. The history of Frigiliana dates from prehistoric times. The village has been inhabited by numerous civilisations from the Phoenicians and Romans to the Arabs, who had the greatest impact on the town’s development. During the Christian reconquest, Frigiliana was the site of numerous battles culminating in the famous battle of the Rock of Frigiliana in 1569 which ended in the complete expulsion of the Moorish people.
