Local News Local News Local News Shock over sexist advertising campain poster in Torre del Mar A poster featuring a naked woman with an explicit remark across her buttocks has prompted outrage in the town of Torre del Mar. The advert appeared at the entrance to the undeground car park in the centre of town but was removed by Local Police within an hour of it being put there. Now authorities are trying to locate the person/s responsible for the advert - so far they have discovered that the website is linked to the country of Belize in South America. The council also expressed their distaste for this type of advert, saying, "We do not agree with this kind of sexist poster, which denigrates the image of women and does nothing to promote gender equality." Investigators say it will be difficult to identify those responsible due to the lack of a public register for advertisers.

During the forum Local animal charity calls for more government invervention "Digitalisation of the tourism sector" experts debate the over dog deaths next steps on the Costa del Sol

The animal charity Tail from Torrox have complained that a large number of abandoned dogs are simply being put down in this part of the Costa del Sol. Sue Whewell, President at the local charity is apalled at what she experiences, especially from the Spanish dog pounds or perreras who receive government funding for taking dogs off the streets but appear to make very little effort to rehome the dogs, sometimes putting the animals down within days of them being taken in. Ms Whewell, will often take dogs from the pounds in order to try and save them but these dogs can often have diseases which have been untreated. Sue said, "If the facilities exist they should look after animals that they take in," asking, "how can this happen in a country which has animal cruelty laws?" However, she accepts that it is a difficult battle to fight when there are so many abandoned dogs and what is needed is the government to introduce a law enforcing and subsidising neutering. Tail at Torrox have a dog shelter where dogs are cared for and walked by volunteers, as well as 2 charity shops in Torrox Costa. The charity is always looking for animal lovers to give their time. Visit www.tailtorrox.org for more information.

Summer entertainment begins in Plaza de los Cangrejos, Nerja The Councillor for Education and Culture in Nerja has confirmed a programme of entertainment for August and up to the 3rd September. The Cultural Programme is structured so that every day of the week there is a different style taking place, so on

Patricia Gutierrez, Councillor for Tourism in Nerja, attended the conference which was sponsored by Unicaja Bank and the Diputacion of Malaga. In the forum experts held conferences and discussions about the digital transformation of the tourist sector in the region - and the next steps. The Director General of Costa del Sol Tourism, Arturo Bernal, spoke of the growth that has shaped the Costa del Sol since the development of digital marketing. Antonio Guevara, dean of the Faculty of Tourism of the University of Málaga where national technology innovation projects are carried out, commented that all information management of the costas tourist destinations should be technologically integrated.

Nerja sewage plant issues rumble on

Recent news on the Nerja Sewage Plant reveals that the company in charge of finishing the project have gone bankrupt leaving the plant 96% complete but with the work on the main pumping station yet to start. Subsequently the plant is unable to open and untreated sewage still pours into the sea. The opposition parties in Nerja, the PSOE and Podemos have demanded answers from Spain's Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy, as the Rajoy government promised the treatment plant would be operational by June 2016. Nerja is the only large resort in Malaga still sending raw sewage out to sea via underwater pipes at Burriana and Torrecilla beaches. The sewage exits some 1,500 metres out to sea but there have often been leaks in the pipes which have caused it to be expelled much closer to shore. The saga continues.

Travel light and be savvy with your cabin bag I am all about using hand luggage these days, I rarely check in a bag at the airport; even travelling back to the UK I find whatever I don't take I can either borrow or buy in a charity shop anyway! This method of not checking in luggage saves lots of hassle and time at the airport and makes travelling around far easier and less stressful. You also avoid queueing and extra fees for checked baggage. Just think - no more waiting at the conveyor belt, especially if luggage is delayed or even - wait for it... lost! Many people ask how can it be done for a 1-2 week holiday? Well, a savvy girl called Rachel Grant has recently made a video to show us her tips on just how it can be done - a girl after my own heart !! Read on to see exactly how..... 1) First and foremost roll your clothes instead of folding and make use of ziplock freezer bags (the large ones). This will help compress your items and make them a lot smaller. You can also ditch the iron as rolling clothes also reduces heavy creases. Ziplock bags keep your clothes clean and organised because you can see easily what is inside each bag. 2) Shoes can be a real problem when only taking hand luggage, I always say no more than 2 pairs in the case and you have to be slick with what clothes you are taking and make sure they all match the style of shoe!

However, another good tip from Rachel is to pick shoes that are lightweight and will flatten (espradril types) then pair them together with an elastic band. TIP : If you have dirty shoes on your travels and don't have time for cleaning, make a point of saving the free shower caps that they give you in hotels. Wrap them around the soles of the shoes or even other items if they get wet. 3) Buy travel sized toiletries instead of lugging around heavy large bottles or use empty small bottles that you can fill with your favourite products. Make sure you follow the government advice for travelling with liquids and carry all your liquids in a plastic bag so they can be clearly seen. If you run out of something while you are away, you can always buy something new at your destination. TIP : You can buy empty small bottles in Mercadona, which I fill up with my favourite products. 4) Pick lightweight fabrics and see how much space you can save. Lightweight fabrics are also easy to hand wash and dry quicker than heavy fabrics like denim. If you must travel with jeans, wear them on your journey. TIP : I carry one set of plain high heeled shoes and use shoe clips to change the look of the shoes. It always feels like you have a different set of shoes on and they match your outfit. 5) Make the most of your space by filling your shoes with items like socks or underwear. 6) Watch out for bulky and heavy items: Purses, handbags and hats can be awkward shapes and take up too much room. If you must pack these choose items that are flat or collapse.

10 Iconic Spanish Lighthouses The lonely profession of the lighthousekeeper has long since died out; it was decades ago when a solitary person would man the tower. Now they are only technical systems to aid navigation, although the old houses and towers that illuminate the sea still remain, and still help with maritime navigation and in addition fascinate tourists who visit these often remote beacons that bear the signs of what it was like in the past for that most reclusive of professions. Here are ten lighthouses, built during different eras in the past, in urban environments, idyllic coasts or isolated from everything. La Farola - Malaga

This tower is 38 metres high and is a charismatic symbol of Malaga when you enter the Port area of Muelle Uno. Muelle Uno is the most modern example of restoration that has taken place in the unique city of Malaga, together with the shopping area, restaurants, the Pompidou Centre, child friendly play areas and live music and dancing throughout the summer months (thursday nights to be exact, on Pier 1 at 9.30pm). The Lighthouse is the only one on the peninsula with a female name "La Farola". It was built in 1816 by engineer Joaquin Maria Pery, Brigadier of the Spanish Navy and Director of the Port of Malaga and completed in just one year.

Above : The Formentor Lighthouse is perched high up on top of this charming winding road - the most perfect fairytale lighthouse Below : La Farola in Malaga Port, the trusty structure has been lighting the way since 1816 and now complements the Muelle Uno Port area. Right : The Lighthouse of the Natural Park at Cabo de Gata

Cabo de Gata - Almeria

It is the final destination of many excursions in the natural park of Cabo de Gata, Nijar. One of the most beautiful sunsets in Andalucia can be enjoyed from the base of this lighthouse, built on the ruins of the castle of Francisco de Paula, on a cliff 50 metres high. The tower itself stands at 18 metres. 12 THE MARKET PLACE

Cap de Barbaria

Alcanada

Favàritx

Sant Sebastia

Punta Almina - Ceuta

Alcanada - Mallorca

Sant Sebastia - Girona

Formentor - Mallorca

Nuevo Faro - Valencia

Cap de Barbaria - Formentera

In 1849 Antonio Philippe of Orleans, Duke of Montpensier and brother-in-law of the Queen Isabel II of Spain visited Ceuta. He rode up to Monte Hacho and was impressed by the sea traffic in the Straits of Gibraltar. This excursion facilitated the installation of the lighthouse, financed largely by the Duke and operating intermittently since 1855.

The most powerful lighthouse on the coast of Catalonia is in Llafranc (Palafrugell), one of the most beautiful areas of the Costa Brava, 170 metres above sea level. In the old house of the lighthouse keeper, a Japanese restaurant has now been set up and a small church (ermita) and a charming hotel are located nearby.

It breaks radically with tradition! The most modern installation in Spain has been built at one end of the North extension of the port of Valencia and away from the typical image of classic lighthouses: it is 31 metres high, is blue and yellow and was built only with composite materials, Carbon fibre and fibreglass with polymer matrix.

Favàritx - Menorca

To the northeast of the island, in an almost inhospitable area, giving the impression of being almost at the end of the world, a lighthouse stands alone with black and white stripes with a two-story dwelling at its base that in recent times has been converted into an exhibition room of objects related to the world of beacons and sea lighthouses. 14 THE MARKET PLACE

When arriving in Alcudia by boat from Barcelona or Cuitadella, one of the things that most attracts the attention of passengers is an idyllic island, Alcanada, with a unique lighthouse construction. With a height of 15 metres and a square house at the foot, it is one of the most picture postcard images in one of the most beautiful areas of Mallorca. It is a magical destination, almost like when you reach the end of a long journey. Situated in the North of Mallorca, where the Bay of Pollenca finishes and from where you can see much of the West of Menorca. The old house of the lighthouse keeper has been turned into a cafeteria years ago with stunning views of the cliffs and the sea. A perfect place to take a trip if you are visiting Mallorca. Julio Medem made this lighthouse famous when he made the film "Lucía y el Sexo" (Sex and Lucia) which was filmed largely in Formentera. There is a popular sexy poster image of Paz Vega (the leading actress in the film) driving a moped with the iconic lighthouse stood proudly in the background. She turns her back on the lighthouse that visitors now flock to see each evening to enjoy one of the best sunsets on the island.

El Moscarter - Ibiza

At the Northern end of Ibiza, in the middle of nowhere, a tower 53 metres high, the tallest in the Balearic Islands, with enormous white and black helical bands appears. It was inaugurated less than 40 years ago and is totally automated and therefore has no housing or installation at the foot, giving it a large pencil like impression that has been nailed to the ground!

Economical, Eco-friendly swimming pools for all tastes With the arrival of the heat there is always the lingering thought in your mind about how lovely it would be to have a swimming pool. Any grassed, tiled or spare ground space can become the perfect location to have a pool. You don’t need a large swimming pool, often a plunge pool to cool off does the trick. Here are a series of pool options for all tastes and to suit all budgets from the most economic to the ecological. Portable Swimming Pools The portable swimming pools are the cheapest option on the market (from around 400 euros) and they are simple and really quick to assemble. This is the best option for very small spaces. They can be made of plastic, wood or steel and the price will vary according to which material you choose. The most recommended is aluminium, as it is a super light material that holds the weight of the water. You will need to invest in protective tarpaulins for the floor and a liner to protect against punctures.

Prefabricated Swimming Pools Prefabricated swimming pools are a great alternative to the classic concrete pool, plus they have the added advantage of being much cheaper and easier to install. Putting one in typically takes around one week. The material used is either polyester or fibreglass. They are made in one piece, avoiding any joints and they are placed directly on the excavated ground. It is reccommened to install these pools on flat, smooth ground as rough terrain can complicate the installation and increase the cost. Another advantage apart from the price is that they do not provide problems with incrustations or accumulations of fungus or algae. They can also be kept empty in winter without incurring any damage.

Concrete Swimming Pools These swimming pools are the most well known and common, mainly due to their durability and resistance. They are made of concrete, a material with a long shelf life. These pools are totally weatherproof and leaks are rare if done properly. They are also the most attractive looking pool, any design or shape is possible and they adapt to any terrain. They are an excellent option in areas of difficult access such as roof patios. Installation can take a month and have a cost of 8,000 to 20,000 euros depending on the dimensions required.

Natural Swimming Pools Nowadays the ecological theme is more and more fashionable, so there is the option to install a more natural pool in your home. That could be by simply installing a pool that does not use massive amounts of chemicals - you can have your swimming pool using salt instead of chlorine. Or alternatively you could go really eco-friendly and 18 THE MARKET PLACE

install a pool that allows purification through more natural means. A natural pool can work like a river or lake and that means plants have to be put in that are there to purify fresh water instead of any chemicals. This system runs a bit more like a pond or water feature but on a larger scale. Your pool would have gravel, sand or volcanic stone and vegetation. It will require the installation of a water pump and a circuit that allows circulation of the water. Rocks and plants will minimize the nutrients of the water avoiding the appearance of algae. Natural pools are very easily integrated into the exterior because they do not have a defined shape and they usually live perfectly at one with the garden environment.

Car News

by Martin Ward

First Driving Impressions – Skoda Kodiaq, UK Press Launch, Bath. Kodiaq ending with a ‘Q’ seems a strange name for a new SUV, but manufacturers giving strange names seems to be the norm now. Only the German premium manufacturers stick with their welltried and tested badging policies of: A3, A4, 3-Series, 5-Series, C-Class, E-Class etc, others keep coming up with names of things and places you have never heard of. Kodiak, ending with a ‘K’ is a brown bear that inhabits the islands of the Kodiak Archipelago in Southwest Alaska, and has a lifespan of around 28 years... bet it’s a grumpy old bear when it reaches that age! So now the natural history lesson is over, on to the car ending in ‘Q’.

T

he Kodiaq is Skoda’s first venture into the seven-seat market and although there is plenty of room in the interior it is only 40mm longer than the Octavia. It measures 4,697mm long, 1,882mm wide and 1,676mm tall (including roof rails) and has a wheelbase of 2,791mm. We set off from the hotel near a wet and cold Bath in a petrol powered Kodiaq and headed for the south coast. The first things that are really noticeable as you climb aboard is just how much space there is in the car - it is huge, almost up to Skoda Superb room. The other thing is the level of quality, it really is excellent. Outside the hotel they were all lined up and ready to go and now, something that has happened in the past few weeks, manufacturers are offering more petrol engine vehicles on these launches. Not long ago only diesels would be offered on the events, but how things have changed. You have to be pretty quick to get your hands on a petrol car as these are now in demand from the journalists - things have really changed. So with keys to a 1.4-litre TSI 4x4 150ps SE (7seat) in hand (and hanging on to them) we set off in a southerly direction. It didn’t take long in the car to appreciate what a great car it is. So much room, seven seats, 4x4, versatility and so practical, with a high level of specification and quality throughout. With this engine it certainly isn’t a racing car, or a hot-hatch, but it wasn’t designed to be. It's just a good all-rounder. We were a bit concerned that this 1.4 motor would be underpowered given the size of the car, but its 150ps powers the car from 0-62mph in 9.9 seconds. The official combined fuel consumption figure is 39.8 mpg, but after we had driven the car on a variety of roads, we 20 THE MARKET PLACE

achieved 40.6 mpg, a good result we thought - and I dare say we could have got more if we had driven it a bit steadier and thought more about saving fuel. This engine is so quiet and refined and has the advantage of ACT (Active Cylinder Technology) a system where 2-cylinders are not used when they are not needed, such as coasting or going down hills. This inevitably reduces fuel use and helps increase miles per gallon (or litres). Other engines available are: 1.4 TSI 125ps, 2.0 TSI 180ps and diesels on offer are 2.0 TDI 150ps and 2.0 TDI 190ps. Many of these engines are available with 4x4 and DSG auto gearboxes either as individual items or as a pair, although the price list does look long and a bit cluttered and complicated – 24 different variants in fact at launch, and then SportLine and Scout will arrive at a later date. Models available are Kodiaq S, SE, SE (7-seat) SE L (7-seats are standard) and Kodiaq Edition, with prices ranging from £21,556 and going up to £34,050 OTR. The car we drove, the SE 1.4 4x4 7-seat, costs £26,760, so sensibly priced and a lot of car for the money. The people in the Czech Republic have not forgotten about safety either as there is a good long list of standard equipment to help the driver stay out of trouble and stay safe, such as Front Assist including City Emergency Brake which uses radar and can detect dangerous situations involving pedestrians and other vehicles. Also Multi-Collision Brake which prevents any further uncontrolled movement of the vehicle in the event of an accident. Then there are loads of options available that are brilliant, but not sure many will pay the money for these options, good as they are. The exterior design looks sleek and almost sporty for such a large SUV. Nice lines run from front to rear and the whole car looks completely in proportion, a difficult thing to achieve on this sort of vehicle, although most manufactures are now managing to create style and a design flair, complementing a good useable interior package with clever designing and engineering. The rear seats are very useable and can easily accommodate two adults, though kids would be much happier sat in them for any length of time. There is still a good useable amount of space behind the third row when they are being used, but fold them flat and you get loads of space. The second row of seats gives the occupants so much leg room, it’s like a Tardis, very Limo-ish. Skoda’s first venture into the large SUV has been a long time coming but the wait has been worth it. It is such a nice car to drive, especially fitted with the economical 1.4 petrol engine. It has loads of space, is well put together, and has a high level of standard equipment and almost premium look, feel and touch. I’m sure Skoda will do well with this car and attract people into showrooms who have never visited a Skoda dealer before.

Sunglasses Trends Summer 2017 Sunshine requires the right eyewear and we are loving these summer trends for sunglasses to create the right look here on the Costa del Sol. So lets look at the shades that will offer chic protection while packing on the glamour! Still Rocking the Oversized

Double Wires

If you have been enjoying the oversized eyewear for the last few seasons, you will be very happy to learn that you can continue rocking the look throughout 2017.

Double wire rims seem to have a good spot on the Summer 2017 eyewear trends list.

Back to the Future Designers have been trying to create a look that we have generally associated with sci-fi movies to date, including playing with black and white features and turning summer 2017 sunglasses into futuristic goggles.

The Perfect Statement Statement sunglasses are all the rage on the beaches this summer and they include everything from funky colours to funky shapes, thick rims and totally seethrough designs.

Funky Geometry Eyewear trends also have a funky form of geometry.

Adding in Aviator Sunglasses Aviators have been a statement on the runways for quite some time now and show no signs of disappearing from our closets anytime in the near future, something we are thankful for.

Butterfly Wings Dark lenses or light, colorful or traditional, we see the butterflies appear all over the place.

Iznate on Saturday 5th August What began simply as a tasting of some traditional dishes of Iznate gastronomy, has become a true culinary fair in which all the neighbours of the town participate, putting up stands or stalls in each neighbourhood. The stands are adorned with plant pots, antiques, farm objects, and other typical Andalusian craft objects. Each neighbourhood or street prepares two or three dishes of Iznate cuisine. Once the afternoon tour through all the streets of Iznate has been completed, activity is concentrated in a marquee in front of the Town Hall. At about ten o’clock in the evening, the event’s opening speech begins and the recognition of the work of people and institutions linked to the municipality.

NOCHE DEL VINO - COMPETA 15th August in Competa. One of the most traditional festivals on the Costa del Sol is that of Cómpeta's “La Noche del Vino”. This festival has its roots in the farewell that used to be given to those who left the town to go to the farmhouses for the harvest and did not return home until October, after the grapes and raisins had been trodden or packed. Keeping the tradition, every 15 August the party begins with the traditional treading of the grapes in the Plaza de la Vendimia, accompanied by the music of the fandangos of Cómpeta and the verdiales (folk dancing) with groups from other localities. A complete programme of activities takes place throughout the day and night with the festival of Flamenco Song and the craft market with typical products from the area.

FESTIVAL OF THE THREE CULTURES 24th to 27th August - Frigiliana The Festival’s carefully prepared programme of activities offers something for everyone: quality music shows in a relaxed family atmosphere, talks on each of the three cultures, food workshops and fairs, a Tapas Route linking all the bars in town, street entertainment and parades, jugglers and belly dancers, children’s games and plays, storytelling, puppet shows, and a market where all three cultures are represented, selling original foods and crafts.

Manish's Zodiac predictions - August Manish Kumar Arora, K.P. Astrologer, Numerologist, Tarot Card Reader & Vastu Consultant Facebook: manishastroconsultant email: manish@manishastrologer.com

Aries ( 21 March – 19 April )

You can pursue an opportunity for expansion, have a new experience, learn something new, teach, speak, or write. Your outlook can be very positive, and you can create new opportunities for yourself by being optimistic and taking a chance on yourself. You can make progress with one of your dreams for your future if you’ve been doing things right, or you can experience a setback or delay if you need to make adjustments.

Taurus ( 20 April – 20 May )

You can feel best when you’re using your mind and letting your ideas flow naturally. You can be more engaging with others, and enjoy company for the mental stimulation. You may feel a little scattered at times, so try to keep track of your ideas. You can be more supportive of the people you care about, or can get support from others.

Gemini ( 21 May – 20 June)

You can also pursue opportunities to improve your finances, and you can take up a second job, side gig, or turn a hobby into something profitable. It can be a good time to plan ahead and make sure you’re on the right track financially. You can be open to the other ways in which people live, fascinated by other cultures, and attracted to foreign lifestyles.

Cancer ( 21 June – 22 July )

You are enthusiastic and positive about new beginnings, and want to begin anew in many areas. You may throw yourselves into new ventures with zeal, though you may have a hard time sticking to anything for very long. You could decide to cut someone out of your life or end a relationship. Another relationship could go to the next level and you become more committed.

Libra ( 23 September – 22 October )

You could have the chance to reconnect with an older lover, settle an old issue with inheritance money, tax money, debts, loans, or joint finances, or reconnect with an old business partner. Your loved ones may seem more emotional to you, especially your children, or you’re more emotionally drawn to the arts. You’ll need to find a creative way to express your emotions.

Scorpio ( 23 October – 21 November )

You are more determined to achieve your personal goals, and more strategic in the manner you go about doing so. Your personal belief system is transforming dramatically, and you are learning from a broader set of people and experiences than you ever have. Confidence is the key–faith in the universe and in your ability to do the right thing instinctively will get you everywhere now.

Sagittarius ( 22 November -21 December ) Your worldly goals may be watered down during this cycle, as you focus more on personal affairs. Happiness and fulfillment through the expansion of your mind, widening your social circle, travel, and connections to people of a different cultural background than you is indicated. Your idealistic nature is stimulated, and you are likely to yearn for a connection to more spiritual pursuits.

Capricorn ( 22 December – 19 January ) The learning of new skills, the pursuit of new ventures and the alteration of daily routines in work and health will contribute. Some of you begin a romance, one that will take real effort or bring responsibilities. For those in a relationship, it’s time to reshape your lifestyle and your operations together to give your love or life a new form or direction.

Leo ( 23 July – 22 August )

Aquarius ( 20 January – 18 February )

Virgo ( 23 August – 22 September )

Pisces ( 19 February – 20 March )

This is a good time to accomplish something and tackle goals, though it may be at the expense of everything else in your life. You will set goals for yourself and work hard at achieving them, and you’re willing to make any sacrifices that are needed. You could end a transformation you’ve been working on, or see something figuratively die in your life. You want to engage in many conversations about anything and everything, swap information with people, and gossip. You come across as more sociable, scatterbrained, and anxious. You feel most like yourself when you’re getting attention and affection. You want the people around you to dote on you and make you the centre of attention. If single, you could meet someone through a sibling, neighbour, or who lives in your community. 28 THE MARKET PLACE

The tiredness or changing interests or aspirations may bring you to a place you did not actually expect to arrive at. Money will be the concern for some and you may put other interests aside to pursue financial stability or gain. The issue now is to take the threads of what you have and weave a lifestyle that suits, whether you’re independent or with a partner. You are ready to set out on a new course, start a new line of professional development or take up a new cycle of responsibilities. The period would be bringing contacts and associations to develop your career aspirations. Friends, groups and new connections or ideas will give you the lift you need. Outdoors activities appeal more than ever, and an opportunity to travel somewhere exotic could drop into your lap.

Health, Body & Soul Love your life more with advice on how to lead a healthy lifestyle

Ejaculating 21 times a month could save your life

Drinking fizzy water can make you 6x hungrier!

Scientists have found a new way for men to stay healthy and avoid a leading cause of cancer, and it’s much more fun than maintaining a good diet. Prostate health can be a pretty awkward subject, so prepare to blush at this research from Harvard University. Scientists say frequent ejaculations could be the key to keeping the semenproducing gland healthy and avoiding cancer.

Fizzy water, you know, the fancy version of your regular H2O – call it sparkling, soda, carbonated – could actually be raising the levels of your hormone ghrelin – making you hungrier. Academics at Birzeit University in the Palestinian West Bank found that rats who were given fizzy drinks including zero-calorie versions put on weight, while those who drank flat liquid did not. They said that the carbon dioxide in the drinks encouraged the rats to eat on average 20 per cent more. Before you dismiss the findings as only applying to soda water sipping rodents, subsequent tests on human volunteers followed. What they found was those who drank sparkling water at breakfast had ghrelin levels six times higher than those who had still water. In other words, they were six times hungrier. However, the sample size was small not very diverse (20 men, aged 18 to 23). Additionally, the study with the rats didn’t account for variance in lifestyle, like amount of exercise and activity. So, while linked to increased appetite, carbonated drinks alone are not the conclusive cause of weight gain. Still, the study raises an interesting possibility that fizzy drinks could stimulate your appetite and cause weight gain, which is definitely worthy of further research. It's enough to make us reconsider our answer to the question ‘still or sparkling? 34 THE MARKET PLACE

In fact, in a study of almost 32,000 men published in the journal of European Urology, researchers found high levels of sexual activity can reduce the risk of contracting prostate cancer by 33 per cent.

a year. Experts aren’t exactly sure why ejaculation lowers the risk of prostate cancer, but they speculate it might help flush out cancer-causing toxins. According to statistics from the University of Sydney, prostate cancer is the most common cancer diagnosed in Australia, and the third most common cause of cancer death. It’s more common in older men, with 85 per cent of cases diagnosed in those over 65 years of age, so the results of this study are definitely worth taking on board. Enjoyable as it may be, frequent ejaculation isn’t a magical one-stop shop.

The optimum number is 21 ejaculations per month.

The Harvard researchers pointed out an active sex life may be an indicator of good general health, which in itself is likely to lower the risk of cancer.

We’ve done a few quick calculations and that’s equal to 252 times annually — or almost 70 per cent of days in

Gentlemen, you know what you need to do!

Therefore, it’s also important to maintain a good diet and exercise routine, and get regular checkups from your doctor.

Why your meal timing is everything, according to a dietitian - Focus on WHEN you eat

Long gone are the days when we ate breakfast at 7, lunch at 12 and dinner by 6. Nowadays breakfast is more likely to be enjoyed at 9, lunch by 2 or even 3 as the demands of the day see time getting away from us and dinner by 8, if we are lucky. Commuting and frantic lives means that we eat far more sporadically in modern life but also in a way that has much more of a negative impact on our weight than we may realise. The human body is regulated according to a circadian rhythm - this means that our basic physiological processes, including our hormones are controlled according to a 24 hour body clock. We are programmed to burn more fuel in the first half of the day, and to store it later. It means the body is also programmed to have periods of time without food (overnight) and that there are times the body is in store and repair mode as opposed to mobilise fuel and burn it mode. Nothing we do significantly changes this. It is for this reason that modern life and the random, if not constant feeding that we expose the body to, is conducive to weight gain over time. In many examples we eat far more food late in the day than we do in the morning and we do not give the body the long periods of time it needs overnight without food to allow the hormones that control fat metabolism to return to baseline levels. It is for this reason that focusing on eating the right things at the right times of day is one of the most powerful things you can do to control your weight long term. Try and eat earlier in the day and leave yourself at least 10 hours without food overnight.

Animal cruelty from a legal and policing point of view by Mick Stockdale

There is a well-structured system of laws for animal protection and welfare in Spain. On the one hand, the central government is responsible for the laws related to wildlife protection, sanctions for animal abuse at all levels, sanitary requirements for domestic and farm animals as well as special laws intended to regulate the ownership of potentially aggressive domestic animals. On the other hand, the autonomous regions and the town halls have specific laws related to the protection and the welfare of domestic animals with a local application. The person caring for a pet has the following obligations: 1.- Keep the animal in good sanitary and hygienic conditions, apply all compulsory veterinary treatments and assist the pet with the help of a qualified veterinarian. 2.-Give the pet a suitable accommodation in relation to its size, race and species. Feed it with a suitable diet for healthy development. 3.-Protect the pet from aggressions, dangerous situations or discomfort from other animals or people. 4.- Prevent the pet from attacking other animals or people, as well from creating

any kind of damage. 5.-Report the loss of the pet to the authorities. Additionally the law forbids: 1.-To mistreat, physically aggress or any other practice provoking suffering or unjustified damage. 2.-The abandonment of the animal. 3.-To keep the pet in a place or site unsuitable from the hygienic point of view or in relation to its size, race, species and care needed. 4.-The practice of aesthetical mutilations. 5.-Euthanasia without the necessary conditions approved by law. 6.-Keep the pet permanently attached or confined to a restricted space (with specific exceptions considered by law). 7.-To donate pets in the purpose of publicity, as prizes or any form of compensation other than the conscious and responsible purchase by the owner. 8.-To use the pet in experiments against current legislation. 9.-To sell pets to persons under 16 years of age or to incapacitated persons. 10.-To sell pets outside regulated and designated areas.

Stabilizers, Thickeners and Gelling Agents Consumers demand a certain quality and eating experience from processed foods. This is achieved, in part, by the addition of stabilizers, thickeners and gelling agents, which give foods consistent texture, taste and mouth feel. Definition Extracted primarily from natural substances, stabilizers, thickeners and gelling agents are approved direct additives incorporated into foods to provide structure, viscosity, stability and other qualities, such as maintaining existing colour.

Functions, Names and Labeling

Others

Thickeners, stabilizers and gelling agents are classified separately but overlap in functionality. When dissolved or added to foods, they create stiffness, stabilize emulsions or form gels.

Sugars: agar (from algae), carrageenan (from seaweeds and used to prevent separation in dairy products and ice cream) Sodium pyrophosphate (used in common foods such as canned fish and instant pudding) Lecithin (found in egg yolk, legumes and corn) Mono- and diglycerides (stabilizers naturally present in many seed oils)

Thickeners range from flavourless powders to gums and are chosen for their ability to work in a variety of chemical and physical conditions. Variables affecting choice of thickener include pH, frozen state, clarity and taste. Starches, pectin and gums are the most common commercial thickeners used in soups, sauces and puddings. Stabilizers are substances that increase stability and thickness by helping foods remain in an emulsion and retain physical characteristics. Ingredients that normally do not mix, such as oil and water, need stabilizers. Many low-fat foods are dependent on stabilizers. Lecithin, agar-agar, carrageenan and pectin are common in ice cream, margarine, dairy products, salad dressings and mayonnaise.

Sources are primarily natural (arrowroot, gelatin, starches) but also can be synthetic (carboxymethyl cellulose, methyl cellulose).

Oversight Thickeners, stabilizers and gelling agents must be authorized by the government food standards agency. Standards for food additives are clearly defined with strict criteria, and there must be a documented need for their use before approval is granted. Maximum usage levels vary depending on the additive and the food in which it is used.

Gelling agents also function as stabilizers and thickeners to provide thickening without stiffness through the formation of gel in jellies, jams, desserts, yogurts and sweets. Gums, starches, pectin, agar-agar and gelatin are common gelling agents.

For example, stabilizers in frozen dairy desserts, fruit and water ices and in confections and frostings cannot exceed 0.5 percent by weight of the final product. Emulsifier, flavouring adjuvant, stabilizer or thickener in baked goods have the same 0.5 percent by weight limit.

Home cooking achieves the same structural changes with the addition of familiar starches, grains, egg yolks, yogurt, gelatin, mustard and vegetable purees.

Registered dietitian nutritionists can help consumers feel more comfortable about food additives by communicating their similar role in home kitchens.

Today, food additives are scrutinized, regulated and monitored more closely than at any other time. All new food additives undergo a rigorous testing and safety assessment to Thickening agents also are used in treating medical conditions, such as dysphagia, to make swallowing easier and minimize potential adverse effects to human health. Homemade Banana Ice Cream

It is the season to keep cool and relax, but instead of reaching for the shop-bought tubs of ice cream, why not attempt making your own? This banana flavour ice cream is to die for! Simple, from-scratch recipe that anyone can make! Prep Time : 5 minutes Cook Time : 20 minutes Total Time : 12 hours - 48 hours (Varies by ice cream maker)

INGREDIENTS l 2 cups of double cream l 5 fresh large egg yolks l 1 cup of whole milk l 2 to 3 cups of granulated sugar l 1/4 teaspoon of salt l 3 to 4 very ripe bananas l 1 tbsp vanilla extract l 1 tbsp of dark rum or vodka* l 4 ounces of bittersweet chocolate, chopped

PREPARATION 1) Prep your work station: Create an ice bath by place a moderate amount of ice and water in a large bowl. Set an empty, medium bowl in the larger one on top of the ice. Pour the heavy cream into the medium bowl and set a strainer on top. In a separate bowl, whisk the egg yolks until well combined. 2) In a medium saucepan over medium heat, stir together the milk, sugar, and salt until the small bubbles form along the edges and the sugar has dissolved. Do not let boil. 3) Gradually pour some of the milk into the bowl with the egg yolks, whisking constantly as you pour (I like to use a ladle for this). Once you’ve poured in some of the milk, return the saucepan to the stove over low heat. Slowly pour the yolks into the saucepan, stirring constantly. This process is called “tempering” and will keep the eggs from scrambling. 4) Continue cooking the egg-milk mixture (also called custard) over low heat, stirring constantly and scraping the bottom of the saucepan with a rubber spatula or wooden spoon, 46 THE MARKET PLACE

until the custard thickens enough to coat the back of the spatula. Strain custard into the bowl with the heavy cream. 5) Place half of the custard into a blender or food processor with the bananas. Puree until smooth, then pour back into the bowl with the rest of the custard. Stir in the vanilla extract and rum. Cover, pressing a piece of plastic wrap against the surface, then chill thoroughly in the refrigerator for at least four hours or, if time allows, overnight. 6) Freeze the ice cream in your ice cream maker according to the manufacturer’s instructions, adding the chocolate during the last 5 minutes of churning. Transfer ice cream to an airtight container and freeze 3 hours or overnight. Let stand at room temperature 10 minutes before serving. *The addition of alcohol helps to keep the ice cream softer and creamier. If you like the flavour of rum, it’s delicious in this recipe. If not, vodka is a flavourless addition that will still keep the ice cream creamy. If you prefer not to use alcohol, it can be omitted completely, though the ice cream will freeze slightly harder.

Local animal charities TAIL (Torrox Animal International League)

C.A.S. (Costa Animal Society)

One of the questions frequently asked by those interested in Tail’s operation is “how can you be sure that the dogs go to a good home”? Well, for a start, it is impossible to absolutely guarantee that all will be sweetness and light, but we make every effort to achieve that for we are well aware that any dog that comes through us; from either the Refuge or fosterers, has not been dealt a fair hand. Thus at the start we undertake home checks – and that happens if here in Spain or in a foreign country, and then during the whole process of adoption we are talking with the prospective “parents” from which we get a very clear idea if they have the same ethos as ourselves. Finally they have to sign a very detailed adoption form. There are times when Tail has withdrawn from the arrangement at the last minute because we were not 100% convinced that it was what was best for the dog. For those dogs that are placed through other charitable associations we can only say that if the association doesn’t have the same aims as Tail then we will not be placing through them. Here are some photos of recently adopted dogs with their new family.

SCRUFFS! Let the games begin. The Costa Animal Society (CAS) is pleased to announce that our annual dog show, Scruffs will be held on October 14 at the Plaza de España in Nerja from 12.00pm until 5.00pm. Guaranteed to be a wonderful afternoon (beneath the enormous tent), there will be prizes for 12 different categories, including Waggiest Tail and Best Rescue Dog. Food and beverages will be available along with several stalls offering a diverse selection of handicrafts. If you are interested in having a stall please ring Scott on 603 416 632.

WHY CHIP? Aside from the fact that by law you must have your dog or cat chipped, here’s an interesting illustration of its importance. Little Juanito was found on the beach over the San Juan weekend and turned into the Costa Animal Society (CAS) Shop on June 24. We advertised the little tyke far and wide because he did not have a microchip and waited two weeks to give his owner a chance to reclaim him. In the second week Juanito was seen on the CAS website by a lovely Swedish couple who had just moved to Nerja. They fell in love with him so he was reserved for adoption. As fate would have it, Juanito’s original owner did come forward the very next day. When they were reunited it was clear how much they missed each other by the wagging tail and tears. This lovely young Spanish lady promised to have her little pup chipped in her name straight away.

HAPPY TAILS On June 01 Aroa flew to Norway and started her new life with her Nordic adopted family. Her brother Adam went via ground transport to the UK on June 13 and quickly settled in with his new sister Mimi in the Bolton area. Continued on page 50

READY FOR ADOPTION Betty and Benji are very sweet puppies who were left with CAS back in March as part of a litter of five. Their three siblings found homes fairly quickly but these lovely pups are a bit on the shy side and are still looking for their forever homes. However, once they get to know you they come out of their shell and are quite affectionate. They are seven Benji months old, fully vaccinated and Betty has now been spayed.

MONTH: NEGRI

Negri is believed to have been born early 2012 and is similar to a black Labrador. He’s friendly, castrated and vaccinated and has obviously been a loving family pet. He’s bright, very trainable and gets on fine with other dogs and with children. He does have low level leishmaniasis so is on daily Alopurinol which is cheap and easy to give. Not tested with cats but a really lovely, loving dog with lovely thick fur to nuzzle into. If you would like to meet Negri you can contact the Costa Animal Society (CAS) on 95 252 9670 or via our Facebook page, /casnerja

PUNTA LARA CAS QUIZ The Costa Animal Society (CAS) would like to express our appreciation to Mark at the Punta Lara Bar and our regular quizzers for putting on another brilliant season of trivial pursuit which has helped CAS raise much needed funds throughout the winter and spring. We will be taking a break during the dog days of summer but will resume these fun quizzes at the Punta Lara Bar in Nerja on the third Friday of each month starting in October.

EL TRAPICHE MARKET This place will knock your socks off. With 80 to 100 stall holders, you’ll not only find everything you need but everything you didn’t know that you needed. The market is on every Tuesday from 9:30 until 13:30. The Costa Animal Society (CAS) has a booth just to the left when you enter. Are you searching for a new car?

Marketplace: Today we want you to introduce to Jürgen Haas and his new company www.autoagent.es. Hi Jürgen, how are you? Tell us something about your service. Jürgen: I’m importing quality 2nd hand cars from Germany on demand. My focus is on cars of German and British makes (but any other is possible , too), between 1-5 years old and with up to 100.000km. I also have contacts to campervan or classic car dealers. The unique thing about my service is, that I offer the complete service from start to finish! Finding the car you want, completing the purchase and managing the import procedures. That means, the customer is only involved twice in the process: in the beginning when he’s choosing the car and in the end, when he picks it up here in Frigiliana with the Spanish papers and number plates.

Marketplace: Why should people buy a nearly new second hand car from Germany? Jürgen: There are several reasons: Firstly, the nearly new 2nd hand car market is much bigger than here in Spain – this gives you the opportunity to choose nearly any colour or specification. Secondly, the cars are, like in the UK, much better looked after. All my cars have a gapless service history and are nonsmokers cars and the mileage is guaranteed. Thirdly, the cars are in much better condition, e.g. the paint or the headlights because of less sun, or the whole chassis, because of the better roads – I’m sure, 99% of the SUVs in Germany have never seen a campo track! Marketplace: What about the payment? Jürgen: The payment has to be made in advance to my bank account, after signing the buying and service contract. If you are paying from, for example, the UK, you can use our partner Currencies Direct and pay through them into my bank account. I don’t take cash. I keep the customer up to date about the status by email and they can call me any time. Whoever wants may have a copy of my passport as well. I have nothing to hide and I don’t want to rip anybody off. To those who only trust big companies: remember what happened in 2008!

Marketplace: That sounds good. How do you make sure that you only sell good cars? Jürgen: First of all, I only buy from serious dealers in Germany and, secondly, before the purchase, the car is checked by an independent engineer using an 80 point checklist and also looking at model specific issues. Thereby, I can make sure that the car is in perfect condition. Just last month I refused to buy a car because of too many issues after it was checked by the engineer. That’s Marketplace: What should people do when they are interested in in my interest as well, because I give at least a 1 year warranty on every car. Furthermore, in the whole ‘supply chain’ I only work with professionals: the car purchasing a car from you? Jürgen: Just go to the contact section on my website, www.autoagent.es, and dealers, the engineers, the transport company and the gestoria. send me an email with your idea of the car and specifications you are thinking Marketplace: How long does the whole process take and what extra does it about. This doesn’t cost anything extra. The customer receives the final price before buying, including any costs or taxes and even one year road tax. That means full transparency for the customer – he can check the Spanish market to see if Marketplace: Thank you Jürgen. was once a sleepy fishing village but now the town has a population of over 21,000. The Balcón de Europa is a magnificent promenade that was made famous by King Alfonso XII , who’s statue now takes pride of place at the far end. Close by is the 17th century Church of El Salvador, and the beautiful gardens of Capistrano Playa. There are many beaches to be found either side and in front of the town, including Burriana with its numerous cafés and restaurants. Here too, you can take advantage of the water sports on offer, including water skiing, scuba diving and sailing. Torre del Mar

is just 30 minutes from Malaga, and is the beach resort of Velez Málaga. Its population of 21,000 grows between June and September to 150,000. The towns attractions have expanded over the last few years to cope with the demand, and now the four kilometres of beach have been enhanced by an impressive promenade, which stretches all the way to Caleta de Vélez, a port providing over 200 berths and offering sailing and water sports. Throughout the summer, there are many Chiringuitos on the beach, serving fresh barbequed fish and ice cold beers. In 2002, Paseo de Larios was pedestrianized, and is now a tranquil promenade, with plenty of pavement cafés and restaurants. At the seafront end of Larios is a line of bars and discos which continue throughout the night on Fridays and Saturdays. The history of Torre is uncertain, but it is thought that it might have been part of an ancient Greek settlement, known as Mainake, which was destroyed by the Carthaginians. Tombs of the Carthaginians were found at the mouth of the river Velez. More recently, it was a small fishing village until major development began in the 1970’s.

La Herradura

nestles between the Punta de la Mona to the east and the rock of Cerro Gordo to the west. The bay enjoys shelter from west winds creating mostly crystal-clear waters, and is a popular location for water sports & paragliding. There are numerous beach bars and restaurants serving specialities of the region, including tropical salads, fresh fish or paella. The Marina del Este near La Herradura is tucked betwen Punta de la Mona to the west and Cotobro to the east. It boasts a beautiful port, elegantly designed to incorporate select shops, art galleries, bars and restaurants. This small strip of coast also claims to be the best place to dive between Almeria and Gibraltar, and is home to one of the areas leading diving schools.

Lake Viñuela

is a 15 minute drive from the N340 Autovia, leaving at the junction for Velez Malaga. Head inland along the A356; this direction also leads to numerous inland white villages. The first turning on our map is to Benamocarra, which is sign posted to the right after the last roundabout into Velez Malaga. This road will take you back over the main road and then also on to Iznate, and divides to take you to Almachar, El Borge and Cutar. The second turning off the A356 is on the right (after the Repsol garage) to Trapiche. Continue on the A356, and immediately you will see another junction on the left, sign posted to Benamargosa, Triana, Comares and Cutar. This road will also take you as far as Rio Gordo (for a scenic drive). There is a popular Spanish bar on the corner of this junction called El Cruz. Back on the A356, continue on and you will pass another junction on the right, to Canillas de Aceituno, and finally you will see Lake Vinuela in front of you. Turn right before the lake for Puente de Don Manuel, Alcaucin, Viñuela and Periana; carry straight on for Los Romanes, Rio Gordo and Colmenar.

Frigiliana

encompass 39.74 sq km within which live just over 3,000 people year round. Frigiliana is a popular tourist destination, and because there are many holiday homes here, the population triples during the summer months. The history of Frigiliana dates from prehistoric times. The village has been inhabited by numerous civilisations from the Phoenicians and Romans to the Arabs, who had the greatest impact on the town’s development. During the Christian reconquest, Frigiliana was the site of numerous battles culminating in the famous battle of the Rock of Frigiliana in 1569 which ended in the complete expulsion of the Moorish people. One can learn the history of this struggle by walking through the streets of the historic section where there are a series of twelve ceramic plaques posted about which explain the entire story.
