Córdoba in 4 Hours
Córdoba is like an onion with many layers of history: the deeper you dig, the more you will uncover in this fascinating city. By Jessica Infantino Trumble
A
t first glance, it’s a playground of palm trees, mosques and whitewashed buildings, all enclosed within the remains of the old defensive walls. Yet at one point Córdoba was one of the largest and most advanced cities in the world, serving as a great cultural, political, financial and economic centre. It’s no wonder that the entire historic centre – a
fusion of Roman, Moorish and Spanish influence – is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. So with a (too short) 4-hour stopover before continuing on to Seville, we hit the ground running and were not disappointed.
10:00 am – Alcázar Leaving the train station, we walked down Avenida de América and turned into the gardens that run along Paseo de la Victoria. Now surrounded by palm trees, orange trees and fountains with ducks. After a leisurely stroll that loosely traced the outline of the green, we turned off and walked along the edge of the city’s old Roman Walls, which date back to 206 BC. The stone walls provided much-appreciated shade from the heat of the morning sun so we continued along the stone path below, dotted with greenery and a stream of flowing water, until we reached our first destination, the Alcázar of Córdoba. Arabic for “palace” the Alcázar began as a fortress in medieval times, expanding over the years to a larger compound with extensive baths, gardens and one of the largest libraries in the West. It also served as the primary residence of King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella during the height of Córdoba, and was the site where the monarchs met Christopher Columbus before his first voyage to the Americas. A statue memorializing this meeting is the centerpiece of the Alcázar’s beautiful gardens, while the interior of the palace offers mosaics, ramparts and a tower with a great view of the city. There’s also a free app to help guide you through the complex.
11:00 am – Mezquita Our next stop was the Mosque-Cathedral of Córdoba (or the Mezquita for short), a place that I have wanted to see in person since my architecture history classes in college. Essentially you have a 6th century Islamic mosque (built on the site of a Christian 8 THE MARKET PLACE

temple dating back to the Visigoths), which was turned into a Catholic church in 1236 after the Spanish reconquista of Córdoba. Talk about layers of history! As we rounded the beautifully decorated stone exterior, I knew we were in for a treat. Entering through the orange tree courtyard, take note of the simple yet sophisticated irrigation system that provides drainage while delivering water to the trees. Buy your ticket at the back of the courtyard (cash only), and then prepare to be amazed as you walk through the forest of 800+ columns connected by more than 400 candy cane-striped arches. The Mezquita was constructed in 4 phases between 785 and 987, enlarging and enriching the interior space each time. You’ll notice that the red and white arches originally made from stone are actually painted in later additions to save on cost. Facing the mihrab, notice too that each floor tile is about the size of a prayer rug, accommodating more than 20,000 worshippers in the prayer hall. When the Christians came in, rather than tearing down the Mezquita they built their church right in the middle of the mosque. Like a jewel box nestled in its centre, the ornate cathedral follows a traditional Latin cross design and utilized the building’s original skylights to deliver light to the altar and rich mahogany choir. I’m still a little bit in awe of the Mezquita – as a whole the site is nothing short of an architectural wonder.
12:00 pm – Roman Bridge After exiting the Mezquita we walked around to the back side to reach the
Culture Clash: Domes in the old mosque (left) and the Christian cathedral (right) Roman Bridge, avoiding the gypsy women giving out herb branches “for good luck” (don’t accept one or else they’ll expect money) and the row of horse drawn carriage drivers looking for their next fare. As its name implies, the bridge was constructed in the 1st century BC during the Roman rule of Córdoba, and has been restored several times throughout the years. Today’s bridge is made up of 16 arches that span 810 feet across the Guadalquivir River, connecting the Puerta del Puente (meaning “gate of the bridge”) on the north side with the Torre de la Calahorra on the south side. The tower was originally built for defensive purposes, and later became a prison, then a girls
school and now houses a museum. The pedestrian bridge was surprisingly not crowded, which made for a nice walk across and an even better view of the Mezquita and the city from the opposite side.
1:00 pm – Jewish Quarter We spent the rest of our time in Córdoba wandering through the narrow, winding streets of the city’s Jewish Quarter, with its distinctive whitewashed buildings, decorative patios and adorable shops. One of my favourite places was the family-owned Meryan leather workshop at number 2 on Calleja de las Flores, a street that’s adorned with beautiful red flowers in bright blue pots. Further up at number 8 on Calle Ángel de Saavedra is De Colores, a shop specializing in authentic fans, shawls, combs, jewelry and other flamenco costume items. I bought a few gifts here, including Andalucían silver earrings and some fans, which are hand-painted on the premises. Even though we didn’t share the same language, the patient shopkeeper helped me open countless fans so that I could find the perfect ones to take home. Continuing on up through Plaza de Las Tendillas in the more modern part of the city, we capped off the day with a quick coffee on our way back to the train station. We were alone in the bar, apart from one elderly man sipping his café solo in the corner, and even though it was hot outside the breeze from the ceiling fan above made it seem like the appropriate thing for us to order too. Taking our seats on the train, I was still in awe of our whirlwind morning in Córdoba, dreaming of when we could return.

feria de malaga From 11th to 19th August The city’s summer festivals originally commemorated the incorporation of Malaga into the Kingdom of Castile by the Reyes Católicos (Catholic Monarchs), who entered the city on 19 August 1487. Malaga’s August Fair has now become the Gran Fiesta del Verano (Great Summer Fair) and has an open, cosmopolitan and international atmosphere. Find out about its most important events, such as the opening of the fair, which is accompanied by a fireworks show; the Romería pilgrimage where horse-riders, carriages and local people accompany the fair’s flagbearer to the Santuario de la
Victoria; the Feria del Centro (Central Fair), where you can taste wines and tapas in the historic streets of Malaga, accompanied by music; the Real de la Feria fairground, where booths, live performances, and fairground attractions are all brought together to create an area where visitors can have fun.
Ricky Martin Concert - Fuengirola 3rd June 2018 16th August Ricky Martin will be back in Spain this summer ready to fill the Marenostrum Music Castle Park in Fuengirola on the 16th of August. Ricky will play in nine other Spanish cities during the month of August, and Fuengirola will be his first Andalusian show. This incredible performer is returning to the Spanish stage after a superbly successful second year of residency in the Park Theater, Las Vegas. As always, he will put on a great show, including many of his hits such as “La mordidita”, “Livin’ la vida loca”, “Vente pa’ca” and “Fiebre”. 12 THE MARKET PLACE
In the Jorge Rando Museum, named after the painter to whom it pays homage, you can savour the work of this Malaga artist which shows human beings as part of nature, and expresses the acceptance of the dark side of human nature or spirituality as pure love. All of this is reflected in the work of the artist Jorge Rando. ‘El sufrimiento posa clamando justicia’ is one of the great thematic cycles which make up the oeuvre of this neo-expressionist painter. Paintings can be viewed until April 2019.
Russain artists around the world - until 26th August Come to the Russian Museum in Malaga and enjoy a fine selection of works of art from Russian artists that head for foreign lands to learn new styles at the end of the 18th and 19th century. Until the mid-nineteenth century, artists who studied in Russia were strictly regulated and only worked on historical, mythological and biblical themes. For that reason, the best classic works of Russian art from the 18th and 19th centuries were made in Italy, where creative freedom allowed them to speak about their interest in life and fun.
Collection of Miniatures El Carromato de Mijas
The Mijas Wagon, which was opened in 1972, is one of Mijas' best attractions. Definitely a must-see, no tourist can resist going in after reading the posters put up at the entrance of the museum explaining what you can see inside: dressed stuffed fleas, a ballet dancer carved on a toothpick, a naval battle on a pinhead or Leonardo da Vinci's Last Supper on a grain of rice. An original collection of miniatures, the greatest virtue of which is that they arouse curiosity thanks to the unusuality of their subjects.

Banks in Spain: top tips for account holders Whether it’s due to the language barrier or lack of knowledge about the Spanish banking system, many expats don’t realise that they’re duped out of money every year by their banks. Read our tips to make sure that the euros stay where they should: in your account (or pocket)! But it’s just a big con. The money has to come from somewhere (banks never lose) so watch out for higher commission, lower savings rates or poor service. Text provided by MoneySaverSpain.com
Check Your Direct Debits
Plus taxpayers in Spain will have to declare the gift on their tax return. Believe it or not, the bank must provide you with a statement showing the value of the gift, most will be subject to a 21% tax rate. So your freebie isn’t that free really.
Using direct debits for your utilities, phone and other bills is easy and the service is normally free. But what happens How Safe Is Your Money? when there’s an amount charged to your The Spanish Deposit Guarantee Fund account that you don’t agree with? guarantees 100,000 euros per account holder per bank. However just because a For direct debits you set up, if it seems bank is located in Spain doesn’t mean it’s the amount charged is incorrect (for included in this scheme. example 100 euros charged for a 10 euro bill), by law you have 8 weeks to return Other EU banks are normally covered by it. But check twice: if it is correct and the their respective country. For example, the direct debit has to go through again then Dutch Central Bank covers ING Direct for the company concerned will charge you the same 100,000 euros per person. (normally up to 10 euros). For other non-Spanish banks make sure If you see a charge on your account that you check before putting any money in. you haven’t authorised then you have Take into account that the Deposit 13 months to return the charge. Don’t forget to let your bank know not to accept Guarantee Fund does not cover the following financial products: Investment any further charges from the company funds, pension plans and insurance. concerned. Remember never to use this service just to protest at what you’re charged. Not paying your bills month after month could lead to a lot more problems than having a subscription / phone line cut off as you may end up on a debtor’s list.
Commission Rates Are Negotiable If your bank doesn’t offer free credit cards or commission-free banking, don’t accept the commission rates at face value. Longterm and “good” customers can negotiate commission rates. As there are plenty of commission-free accounts available (normally online banking), if you don’t get what you want then let your bank know you’ll take your money elsewhere.
Watch Out With Free Gifts Gone are the days that banks would try and attract new clients with offers of kitchen cookware or bathroom towels (yes, really, these were attractive freebies for new bank clients in Spain!). Nowadays you’ll be offered iPads, HD TVs, smartphones and similar gadgets. 14 THE MARKET PLACE
The Bank Manager Is Not Your Friend!
Using and Transporting Cash Cash payments in Spain are limited to 2500 euros to avoid money laundering. If you have an invoice for 4000 euros you cannot make two payments of 2000 euros each. Banks can request to see your ID if you wish to deposit or withdraw over 3000 euros in cash. There is a charge for depositing coins, even into your own account. Banks charge for the time taken to count coins; some will charge different rates depending on the number of coins. Commission rates are on bank websites and are often around 5 euros to 10 euros. Check at your branch before taking along your piggy bank. Travelling in or out of Spain with over 10,000 euros is subject to presentation of Form S-1 (either at the bank or at Customs). If you’re caught, and, yes, people have been caught, the minimum fine is 600 euros up to a maximum of half of the amount not declared. When withdrawing a large amount of cash, make sure you keep the bank validation document as proof. If you need to redeposit the money at a later date and are unable to show where the money came from, the Spanish Tax Office could present you with a 48% tax bill.
Scandals apart, remember that anyone who works in your local bank branch does not have your best interests at heart. They’ll normally be working on commission to get you to sign up for How About Claiming Back Mortgage products sold by their own banking group. Charges? It’s always best to compare with other banks or insurance companies before signing up for anything. Also don’t forget to check the tax applicable on any financial product for your circumstances. Banks will often (conveniently) forget to mention this and any taxes will negatively affect the performance of your investment.
Check the Traffic Light Since 2015 by law most financial products in Spain must be classified according to a traffic light system with colours green through red, or numbers 1 to 6. However, it is the banks themselves that classify each product, so don’t take a green rating as a 100% guarantee. Not all products are suitable for all investors.
By law banks have to inform clients of how much they overpaid on their mortgage due to the floor clause. However this doesn’t mean that all banks will go ahead and refund their clients directly without a fight.
What About The Bank of Spain’s Official Claims Service? Basically, forget it! The number of claims that goes through the Bank of Spain’s Official claims service is considerable. Many consumers receive a favourable reply and then, nothing. It turns out that the Bank of Spain can only advise but not impose its decision. Banks only take action on around one third of claims.

The case dates back to 2010, when the European Court found that several municipalities with more than 15,000 inhabitants did not have any waste collection systems in place. The fine could be increased by 11 million euros more for every six months in which the situation is not improved. EU Regulations regarding waste water treatment were first put in place in the early 1990's and Spain was originally brought before the European Court in 2011. In 2017 Spain was fined heavily when the European Court found it still had 17 municipalities where waste water was not being correctly treated in line with regulations. Referring to the ruling, Regional Minister for the Environment José Fiscal said "92% of citizens of Malaga live in municipalities that purify their waters;, and what remains is in process, it is not forgotten or left." Among those rescued was a heavily pregnant woman experiencing “very strong contractions” who had to be flown by helicopter to a hospital in Almería. Four more migrants were also taken to health centres in Tarifa, Cádiz for bruising, abdominal pain and a possible fracture, according to Red Cross sources. The Gemstones of
August
t o d i Per
by Alex of Gabriela Jewellers, Nerja
Peridot comes in tones of yellow-green to olive-green and brownish-green. It occurs from translucent to transparent. The most valuable gems are transparent with a clear, grass green colour. Peridot is traditionally the gemstone allocated to the 16th Wedding Anniversary. In mineralogical terms it is known under the name “Olivine” for its olive-green colour. It belongs to a series of minerals with its endmembers Forsterite and Fayalite.
Famous Peridot: For centuries Peridot was mistaken for Emeralds and became famous through that confusion. Some Peridot are famous simply for their size and quality as high quality stones over 8 carats are considered rare and are often collectors stones.
Cleopatra’s Jewellery collection: Perhaps one of the most famous royal collections of Emerald/ Peridot jewellery was that of Cleopatra. For centuries, it was
Hardness:

Origin:
Peridot forms deep within the earth and reaches the earth surface through volcanic eruptions. Therefore, it exists all around the world. But today, precious Peridot only comes from Burma (Myanmar), Pakistan, China, Egypt, USA (Arizona), Australia, Brazil and Norway. The Canary Islands are famous for Peridot as well, but the quality is often too low for cutting into jewellery quality gems. Some extra-terrestrial Peridot also came to earth in meteorites, but this Peridot is extremely rare and is a desired gem amongst collectors.
Healing properties:
Peridot is an ancient gemstone, known for over 3500 years and discovered by the Egyptians. It long has been believed this stone possesses protective powers against psychic attacks, nightmares and to ward off evil. Today, it’s said Peridot cleans the heart and is a symbol of undying love. It helps with grief and unresolved anger and helps to increase selfconfidence and assertiveness. It promotes the initiative and energy for a successful and selfdetermined life. Physically, Peridot offers healing to the whole body, but is especially useful for the heart, lungs, stomach, liver and kidneys. Just to name a few, the healing properties of Peridot include the reduction of stress, stomach issues, sugar sensitivity, and circulation problems. 18 THE MARKET PLACE
believed those precious stones are all Emeralds because Cleopatra was said to be fanatical about “Emeralds”. Ancient Egypt possessed some of the best Emerald mines of historical times not far from the Red Sea, but also had the largest and oldest deposits of Peridot in the world, found on the desert Island Zabargad (also known as St. John). Peridot has been mined there since about 1500 BC and even though Peridot with a deep, rich green colour like emerald is rare, some specimens exist and almost all of them are from Egypt or Burma. Some jewelry historians are now convinced that some, or possibly all of the emeralds Cleopatra was famous for wearing, were not actually emeralds but Peridots from Egypt.
Shrine of the Three Kings, Cathedral of Cologne: The Shrine of the Three Kings in the Cathedral of Cologne in Germany is adorned with a 200 carat fabulous green gemstone. Over centuries, people believed it is an emerald as its deep green colour looks alike and only late in the last century they were able to proof this fabulous gem is, in fact, a Peridot.
Largest cut Peridots: 1. The world largest cut Peridot weighs over 311 carats (62 grams) and was found on the Island Zabargad in Egypt. It is kept in the Smithsonian Institution in Washington D.C., USA. 2. Another one, weighing 192,75 carats is in the Diamond Treasure in Moscow, Russia. 3. The Londoner Geological Museum in England exhibits a 146 carat Peridot.
Spinel
Spinel occurs in a wide range of colours such as red, pink, orange, yellow, brown, blue, violet (rare), green, black and colourless. Specimens exist from opaque to transparent. The most popular colour is a ruby-like red and large stones are rare.
The Timur Ruby (also Khiraj-i-alam, "Tribute to the World"):
Famous Spinel: Before the 19th century red gemstones were believed all to be rubies, but with new technology and modern science soon the difference between a ruby and a spinel was discovered.
The Black Prince's Ruby: A large, irregular cabochon red Spinel weighing 170 carats (34 grams). It is set above the diamond Cullinan II in the Imperial State Crown of England. The ‘Black Prince’s Ruby’ is one of those famous examples of a red spinel long been mistaken for a ruby. It was given to Edward of Woodstock (the ‘Black Prince’) in 1367 and stayed in possession of the English Crown Jewels ever since. That makes it one of the oldest gems of the English Crown Jewels.

Origin:
Spinel occurs with Ruby and Sapphires and are often mistaken for them. They occur in Burma (Myanmar), Cambodia, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, Australia, Brazil, Madagascar, Nepal, Nigeria, Tadzhikistan, Tanzania, Thailand and USA.
A polished, but unfaceted red spinel. It weighs 361 carats (72 grams) and was believed to be a ruby until 1851. It is named after its first owner, the conqueror Amir Timur the founder and first ruler of the Timurid Empire (Persia and Central Asia). The gem is inscribed with the names and dates of its previous owners: - Timur, - Akbar 1612, - Jahangir 1628, - Aurangzeb 1659, - Farrukhsiyar 1713, - Ahmad Shah Durran 1754, Maharaja Ranjit Singh 1813, - Maharaja Sher Singh 1841, - Maharaja Duleep Singh 1849. When the British took control over Punjab (India) in 1849, they took possession over the Timur Ruby together with the Koh-i-Noor diamond and the East India Company presented it to Queen Victoria as a gift in 1851. It was set in a necklace in 1853 and after the necklace was lengthened in 1911, it was rarely worn but still belongs to the collection of the British Crown Jewels.
The Samarian Spinel: This spinel is with its weight of 500 carats (100 grams) the world largest of its kind and is part of the Iranian Crown Jewels. It has a hole in it which was concealed with a diamond. According to a diary entry of the court physician to the Iranian Shah Nasser al-Din Shah Qajar this hole had an interesting history. The King told him, the Israelites made the hole to hang the spinel on the neck of the biblical golden calf while Moses received the Ten Commandments. The Persian King Nadir Shah captured the Samarian Spinel together with another spinel weighing 270 carats (54 grams) in the 18th century while he conquered India. The smaller spinel bears a 350-year old inscription from a previous owner the Jahangir, a Mughal Emperor of India. Today, both spinels belong to the Iranian treasury.
GJ Gabriela Jewellers Unique Handcrafted Gold and Silver Jewellery
Healing properties:
Spinel helps you to accept yourself as you are and supports a positive, life-affirming attitude. It gives courage and confidence. Physically, it cleans bowel and skin and stimulates numb or paralysed limbs.

Car News

First Driving Impressions – VW Touareg, International Media Drive, Salzburg. This all-new, larger Touareg is the third generation of this popular SUV. The first model was launched in the UK in 2003 and it doesn’t seem two-minutes since we were on the launch of it. Since the MK1, nearly 46,000 have been sold in the UK in total. 60kph, acceleration and braking) and a new roll stabilisation system with electromechanically controlled anti-roll bars. After the evening meal, we were taken out in the Touareg in the pitch dark up in the mountains to try the Night Vision which uses a thermal imaging camera that detects humans and large animals, though we never really found out exactly what a large animal is, a big cat, a small dog, or a sheep or cow. But one of us got out of the car and walked in front of it, and those still in the car could clearly see the outline of us, in the dark, dark surroundings - a bit spooky really, seeing this heavenly shape, shining as bright as a star on a small screen in front of you. But it did work and would help reduce accidents involving people or animals.
W
e landed at Salzburg airport and the cars were lined up, strangely enough in what looked like a disused departure lounge, with Gate Numbers and toilets and shops surrounding the cars, quite bizarre we thought. But they looked magnificent lined-up and ready to go. Only one model, or one engine was available to drive: the 3.0 V6 TDI that produces 286ps. Other engines that will be available will be a 3.0 V6 TDI 231ps, a 340ps 3.0 V6 petrol, a 421ps 4.0-litre V8 Turbo diesel, and at some stage in the future a 367ps Plug-In petrol Hybrid, but no date has been given yet for the launch of this engine. We left the departure lounge, departed the airport and headed out into the hills, through some very pretty little Austrian villages, going at a very steady pace to take in the scenery and look for places to take photographs. On many of the events you struggle to find somewhere to take photographs, and you need to concentrate harder when looking for that ideal spot, rather than paying full attention to the car you are testing. But in Austria there was no shortage of splendid locations to get the camera out. This new Touareg is full of new 20 THE MARKET PLACE
technology, some standard, and some available as options. One of the most impressive bits of kit in the car is the huge centre screen that measures 15-inches; almost as big as my telly at home, it dominates the dash. But it's so easy to use, and very intuitive. The car we drove was fitted with a Sat-Nav system that was produced in conjunction with Airbus, and not only showed the roads, but also images of the surroundings, including buildings, in real time - all very clever. This 3rd Generation is equipped with permanent all-wheel drive (4MOTION) mated to an 8-speed automatic Tiptronic gearbox with ‘shift-by-wire’ functionality. There are many options to be purchased by the customer including 4-wheel-steer, which turn one way at low speeds to help create a smaller turning circle, and easier parking and then at high speeds turn the opposite way, which helps manoeuvrability and stability, especially on motorways. There are loads of safety and assistance features including: front cross traffic assist, traffic jam and roadwork lane assist (partly automated steering and lane departure warning up to
We drove the next day back out into the fantastic mountains in Austria, and put the Touareg 286ps through its paces on the twisty roads, and for the size of this large SUV it proved to be very agile and nimble, and a pleasure to drive. It is super-comfortable, the seats are almost perfect, it's the type of car you could drive for hours. If I had been offered the opportunity of driving from Salzburg to Huddersfield I would have jumped at it without hesitation. Prices for the new MK3 Touareg start from around £49,000, but a 286ps with a few nice - and probably needed - options will cost around £60,000 in the UK.

Cool sleeping tips for the summer
Having a cool bedroom is like having a lovely summer nights dream...
N
ow that the summer is in full swing, we are constantly thinking how we can get a good night's sleep at a comfortable temperature. There are a few things that can be done to reduce the savage heat in order to sleep more soundly.
A fan that moves the air Ok, everybody knows that fans are useful in the summer, but do you know which types are better for sleeping and which direction the blades should go? The blades should push the air downwards, so check this if you are purchasing one. It is also not good to have the doors/windows open when the air temperature is high outside and the sun is shining directly on the windows, so whilst it is high during the day keep doors and shutters closed. Ventilate in the morning and during the evening when the sun is lower in the sky and the air is cooler. Another popular myth says that plants must be outside the bedroom because they absorb oxygen. But nowadays it has been shown that they do us no harm, quite the opposite: they even induce sleep and help us sleep more cool.
Open or close the doors? Depending on the location of your bedroom will determine if it is possible for you to open or close doors. If you have an exterior door and shutters you could close the shutter but leave the air vents open to allow cool air in during the night. 22 THE MARKET PLACE

If you have more than one window you can leave both windows ajar to create good air flow. However, if your bedroom is small and you have only a small window then it may mean you have to use air conditioning to cool it down to make rest comfortable.
Sleeping with Air Conditoning Investing in a decent quality machine that does not consume too much electricity is your best choice. To have air conditioning in the bedroom can be noisy and difficult to keep the temperature constant. But when temperatures and humidity rise, there is often no choice in the matter but to use air-con. Choose a model that reaches a maximum of 24 decibels of sound that has a sleep or similar function that gradually raises the degrees and then turns off. So while you rest, the temperature is regulated. Remember the optimum humidity is 45% but it can reach 60% and still be acceptable. Also keep in mind that you don’t need to have the air conditioning freezing cold, a room temperature of 26 degrees is best.
Low Awnings / Shades and Blinds
in the winter. The most economical ones are made of polyester but if you choose a microperforated fabric it will last much longer and be more effective, blocking out up to 94% of the suns rays.
Good insulation is key
A good shade or awning can reduce the heat input in your house by 65%. If you have a sunny bedroom don’t hesitate to install an awning which will keep it much darker and fresher. If you have a large window use a roller awning that will extend on arms and push back
your windows can also degrade with the sun, consider changing these or at least check that yours are ok. Ideally the glass should not be exposed to the sun. Today you can purchase reflective film to put on windows or just make sure shutters are closed during midday heat.
Having the correct insulation in your bedroom - or in your entire house - can reduce your expenses in air conditioning in summer or heating in winter by up to 30%. Ideally, you should think about this and take action before suffering the consequences. You can use paints that reflect light and divert heat (black or dark roofs absorb heat from the sun, whereas white reflects it) or even invest in a double-façade that guarantees good insulation.
Turn off or unplug everything
Double glazing, double freshness
If your bath/shower is close to your bedroom, using hot water can heat up the area. Try and optimise the use of it in summer and try a few cold - or at least cool - showers.
Double glazing is really important so that the cool air does not escape, and hot air penetrate the room. Pick glass with low thermal transmission and low solar factor. The rubbers surrounding
Have you ever noticed the heat household appliances give off? Our advice is to turn things off when you are not using them, especially if the kitchen is near the bedroom. Check your bulbs too and if possible use LED technology - they use less electric and give off much less heat.
Less Hot Water
While you are making changes in the bedroom, ensure you are sleeping with cool, fine fabrics like cotton.

At 20th in the latest Ryder Cup USA standings, Tiger Woods can qualify for a top-eight spot in the standings and earn an automatic place on the U.S. team that will compete at Le Golf National, outside Paris, in September. Woods climbed to 50th in the Official World Golf Ranking after his T6 finish at The Open Championship at Carnoustie, therefore qualifying for the World Golf ChampionshipsBridgestone Invitational, an exclusive event with big Ryder Cup points available. The four remaining slots on the U.S. Team will be Captain's selections. Three selections will be announced by Captain Jim Furyk on September 3, and the final selection will be announced after the BMW Championship on September 9. If Woods – already a Vice Captain on Furyk’s team – fails to make the team on points, he can also be selected by Furyk as a Captain’s selection. There are only three events left for U.S. players to earn Ryder Cup points, and after the third – the PGA Championship at Bellerive in St. Louis this month – the top eight players in the Ryder Cup points rankings will automatically earn a spot on the team. A PGA Championship win would be important for Tiger, with two points awarded for every $1000 earned (only to the winner). The rest of the field earns 1.5 points for every $1000. At the Bridgestone Invitational, one point is awarded per $1000 earned.

Summer Survival Guide 'Ear This: Beware Swimmer's Ear! It's the time of year for painful infections resulting from water trapped in your ears. But a little knowledge goes a long way in reducing the risk of this troubling affliction. It's the dance of summer. You see it wherever humans brave the water – people shaking and jiggling their heads to one side to expel any water that's entered their ear canals. Sometimes they pull their ear lobes at the same time. They might look silly but there's method in their madness. Water trapped in your ears can have a painful aftermath – a skin infection known as an outer ear infection. Because it's common in swimmers, it's also known as "swimmer's ear". While these infections can occur year round, they peak in the warmer months when more of us take to the water. They are different from middle ear infections which are linked to upper respiratory infections like colds. Outer ear infections in contrast are not linked to colds and occur in the ear canal which is the tube running from your ear drum to the outside of your ear. The ear canal is a bit of sitting duck for infections because it's a blind cul-de-sac. You go for a swim and you get water trapped in there. And then water hanging around in there for lengthy periods makes the skin soggy and predisposes it to infection.
Learn to love earwax But trapped water isn't the only cause of swimmer's ear. Other causes include infected hair follicles, eczema and chemical irritation from products like hair dyes. Sometimes a build-up of dead skin cells and dirt is to blame. The ear has a nice self cleansing mechanism which in most people works very efficiently. But in some, it may not. Many cases arise from mismanagement of a substance that's
vital to ear health: earwax. People think earwax is revolting and they want to get rid of it. But it actually protects the ear canal. It's water resistant so it's a barrier to penetration of water. It's sticky so it traps dust and dirt and pollen. And it's also acidic, so it inhibits the growth of bacteria and fungi. Remove your wax and you're not only removing a protective substance. You're also likely to cause trauma to the delicate skin lining the ear canal, leaving little scratches or sores that are a perfect place for microbes like bacteria or fungi to get in and multiply. The internal structures of the ear are so delicate, poking anything down there is a no-no, even with cotton buds. The bud can sometimes come off the little stick and get left in your ear. Or someone walks past and bumps your arm while you're using one and it can pierce right through your ear drum ouch !! Earwax can be a problem though. For one thing, excessive wax can help trap water in your ear canals, increasing the likelihood of swimmer's ear. In 99 per cent of people, wax is good. But there are a few who produce more, so their ear canals can block up pretty quickly and probably need regular cleaning. Any troublesome build-up is best dealt with by a doctor using special tools.
Over-the-counter products to soften and dissolve the wax may be helpful too – although overuse can irritate the skin. Never use ear candles as these can cause serious harm.
Looking after your ears Some people are inherently more vulnerable to swimmer's ear because of the shape of their ear canals. Narrow canals for instance make it more difficult for trapped water to come out. If you're planning to spend a lot of time in the water, it's important to know the symptoms of swimmer's ear so you can seek early treatment from a doctor. These may include: Itching or irritation inside the ear, pain, a sensation your ear is blocked, decreased hearing, redness and swelling of the skin around the ear. For prevention, you could try ear plugs for swimmers but they may not block water entry if you stay in the water for a long time. Otherwise, just try to keep your ears from getting too waterlogged. Even if that means shaking your head around and looking like a lunatic!
Summer Fact Busters Q: Can crossing your legs during a flight cause DVT? A: No, leg crossing is no more dangerous thaan watching the in-flight movie. Q: Do kids need to wear sunglasses? A: Yes, the earlier children wear sunglasses the better they're protected from eye conditions in later life. Q: Are some people more attractive to mosquitoes? A: Yes, certain traits can attract or repel mosquitoes. Although the reasons behind their preferences are far from certain, it's likely to do with the chemicals in our breath and on our skin. Q: Can wearing sunscreen regularly be a health risk? A: No. Sunscreen is a safe and important part of sun protection behaviour. 28 THE MARKET PLACE
Q: Which gives you a worse hangover - red or white wine? A: Either, if you drink too much, but red wine and other dark coloured drinks contain more congeners that can make a hangover worse.

Exercising outside could increase your risk of developing Diabetes
The strange way sparkling water impacts you
While drinking the occasional glass of carbonated or sparkling water is fine, tap water, in most cases, remains the number-one healthy liquid of choice. Consuming the majority of your water intake as sparkling could well be doing some degree of damage, though it affects different areas of your body in different ways.
Your Teeth - Sparkling water is made
by combining carbon dioxide (CO²) with water under pressure. The resulting carbonated water contains a weak acid known as carbonic acid which lowers the overall pH. Plain water is pH neutral at 7 whereas the average sparkling water is slightly acidic at around pH 5-6. Anything below the critical level of pH 5.5 can cause enamel demineralisation and the risk of tooth decay. Drinking it with a straw will help to preserve your tooth enamel. Your Bones - The theory is that phosphates or phosphoric acid contained in some carbonated drinks might interfere with calcium absorption, but studies so far have failed to show a strong link between excess phosphates in the diet and osteoporosis. Again, further studies are needed before we can make a health claim. The good news is that plain sparkling water is phosphate-free, unlike cola, diet cola soft drinks and bottled iced teas, which contain high levels of The phosphoric acid.

A new study has linked outdoor air pollution to an increased risk of diabetes globally, even at levels deemed ‘safe’ by the World Health Organization. The research out of the Washington University School of Medicine and the Veterans Affairs St. Louis Health Care System established a significant link research has been unable to confirm until now. This is especially relevant in a world where diabetes is one of the fastest growing diseases, affecting more than 420 million people globally. Outdoor pollution will now join a list of disease drivers including following an unhealthy diet, living a sedentary lifestyle, and obesity. When looking at outdoor air pollution, the researchers looked at microscopic airborne pieces of dust, dirt, smoke, soot and liquid droplets. Previous studies have found that such particles can enter the lungs and invade the bloodstream, contributing to major health
conditions such as heart disease, stroke, cancer, and kidney disease. In diabetes specifically, pollution is thought to reduce insulin production and trigger inflammation, preventing the body from converting blood glucose into energy that the body needs to maintain health. “This is important because many industry lobbying groups argue that current levels are too stringent and should be relaxed. Evidence shows that current levels are still not sufficiently safe and need to be tightened," explains Ziyad Al-Aly, MD, the study's senior author and an assistant professor of medicine at Washington University. Overall, the researchers estimated that pollution contributed to 3.2 million new diabetes cases globally in 2016, which represents about 14 percent of all new diabetes cases globally that year.
Five genius ways to get pain relief without popping a pill pain, osteoarthritis, Pain is the body's warning signal that something is wrong and it should therefore be investigated thoroughly by a healthcare professional before beginning any kind of treatment. But while you're in the doctor's office, it could also be worth discussing whether any of the following drug-free pain-relief options might work for you. 1. Acupuncture Best for: Neck, knee, lowerback and shoulder pain; osteoarthritis; chronic headaches. How it works: Tiny needles are inserted into specific areas to stimulate the release of endorphins, aka your naturally occurring pain relievers. 2. Cognitive behaviour therapy Best for: Chronic pain conditions such as back
nerve damage and cluster headaches. How it works: CBT is a popular form of talk therapy that helps you develop skills to transform negative thoughts, and ultimately change the way you think about pain.
3. Yoga Best for: Lower-back pain. How it works: It's thought that lower-back pain is alleviated by holding poses that strengthen your core. 4. Hydrotherapy Best for: Musculoskeletal conditions like fibromyalgia, arthritis and lower-back pain. How it works: Hot water relaxes muscles and reduces the force of gravity that compresses joints, offering support for sore limbs. It's also known to decrease swelling and inflammation. 5. Is turmeric the new painkiller? Arthritis sufferers, watch this space. According to findings published in the Journal of Medicinal Food, taking turmeric extract for eight to 12 weeks can reduce pain and inflammation symptoms related to arthritis as it acts in a similar way to the common pain-relief medication ibuprofen.

Wine and it's alcohol content The alcohol content of wine has increased in recent years. “There’s pressure on winemakers from critics for intense flavours, and that means riper grapes,” says Marnie Old, the director of wine studies at the French Culinary Institute, New York. “So during the past few years, winemakers have been leaving grapes on the vines well after they would typically be picked, and that translates into fullerbodied wines and more alcohol.” Thanks to scientific advances in farming, it’s now less risky to postpone a harvest. Warmer climates also play a role, so a Riesling from California is going to be much more potent than a traditional one from a cooler climate, like Germany. Take note: the stated alcohol content of wine can fluctuate depending upon the individual wine. There are differences in the fermentation process that cause a particular bottle of wine to have different percentages of alcohol content. There can be a difference of up to 1.5% from what is printed on the label, due to inconsistency!

Libra ( 23 September – 22 October )
Taurus ( 20 April – 20 May )
Scorpio ( 23 October – 21 November )
You feel more confident and secure, and can do more to increase your sense of security and safety in life. Love matters are mostly easy and amiable. You need to be nurtured and encouraged, and you’ll do the same for those you’re close to. You’re more open to other cultures and ways of living, and want to learn more about them. You may come across as more emotional, moody, and sympathetic. You want to expand your life and your world. The more boxed in you feel, the more you want to blow through the walls around your life and run free. You have more mental energy and can do a lot of investigating into subjects and ideas before pursuing any of them. You see how much the world has to offer you, and you want to have new experiences, and see new parts of the world for yourself.
Gemini ( 21 May – 20 June)
You can pursue new money-making opportunities, take on a second job, or start a side gig for extra money. Your confidence may be higher than usual. You’re compromising and fair, and you strive to bring balance and harmony into your life. If you’re in a relationship, you can commit more fully to your partner. If you’re single, you crave more commitment in your life. You can commit to a project, idea, or person in some way.
Your creative self can become more dominant, and a creative outlet can be good for you now. You may get a chance to expand your business and this expansion will increase your earning and ultimately you will also be able to save a lot of money. You have the chance to improve your financial position, either by stabilizing cash flow or finding new ways to make money altogether. You are especially magnetic and persuasive in this month. You are willing to work especially hard for security, and you are also quick to defend your values. You can be more organized, try to bring more structure into your life, and demand perfection of yourself. You’re driven to have better financial security, and the more money you have, the more secure you feel.
Sagittarius ( 22 November -21 December )
You need more balance in your life so you feel mentally at ease, or it becomes difficult for you to process anything intellectually. You’re willing to make compromises with anyone, and are good at negotiating deals and being a mediator. You can pay attention to the details, do work in your community, or see a sibling or neighbour in the spotlight. You may find that you’re on the go more than usual.
Cancer ( 21 June – 22 July )
Capricorn ( 22 December – 19 January )
Leo ( 23 July – 22 August )
Aquarius ( 20 January – 18 February )
You can begin a transformation of some part of yourself or your life. You can research anything, and you do so thoroughly. You’re interested in the darker side of life, things that are taboo, and take a serious approach to everything. You can be informed of some secrets, and are more secretive yourself. You can bring more intimacy into your life, or start an intimate relationship. You can be more optimistic about the direction your life is taking, and feel good about your goals. You are more sensitive than usual, with everything impacting you at a deeper level, but you try to hide it from everyone and retreat when you feel upset. This is a good time to get a lot of work done, and to deal with your health and daily life. You can come across as more logical, judgmental, and quiet.
Virgo ( 23 August – 22 September )
You can be more inspired, creative, and artistic, and want to create something special. You can also seem more like your true self. Your dreams can be a focus, and you can get closer to achieving your dreams if you’ve been working hard and smart, or encounter more roadblocks if you haven’t. Love is complicated, private, and intense this month. You can also be more emotional if you feel things are out of place. 42 THE MARKET PLACE
You can get further along your life path, or feel that you need to change your direction completely. You have energy to deal with your spirituality, and are driven to explore your spiritual self. You can become interested in the metaphysical, and explore spiritual topics. You love conversation and want to be around other people. You may also expect your love relationship to be deeper this month. You feel most like yourself when you’re taking time to do the things you love to do most, and allowing yourself to embrace your inner child. You want to be playful and have fun, and need breaks from work regularly or you get grumpy. If you’re in a relationship, you can be more emotional with your partner, or vice versa. If you’re single, you can meet someone you feel a karmic link to.
Pisces ( 19 February – 20 March )
You begin the month with broad vision and enthusiasm. This is a good month for travel and exploration, but career or reputation matters can get tricky at times. Some of you are up for a promotion or raise. You derive less pleasure from being with those you’re closest to, and may opt to spend more time alone. You come across as more scattered, social, and intellectual.

Nutrient Analysis / Tracking Software A very popular website and app was something called Supertracker. Nutritionists and Dietitians used it for quick recipe analysis and as a platform for clients to log daily food intake and physical activity. However, now the market has been flooded with similar tools the public sector "supertracker" has been discontinued. Here we explore some alternatives for you to consider using. When selecting a nutrient analysis or tracking software, consider your needs and goals. Free programs may be useful for keeping clients engaged and delivering general nutrition information. If you are analysing recipes for a restaurant or creating food labels for retail, professional software may be worth the investment.
eaTracker Created by Dietitians of Canada, eaTracker is a recipe analyser and food and activity tracker. Like SuperTracker, eaTracker is a consumer-focused app with options to log food and exercise, plan meals, analyse recipes and track progress. Its content is based on the Canadian Physical Activity Guidelines and Canadian Nutrient File, the standard reference food composition database centered on foods commonly eaten in Canada.
Verywell Fit The Verywell Fit recipe nutrition calculator is easy to use: Type ingredients individually or copy and paste into the calculator to generate a Nutrition Facts panel that can be saved or embedded into another website. Verywell Fit has two registered dietitian nutritionists on staff and uses a combination of nutrient data sources. This calculator may be ideal for quick recipe analysis, but it lacks other tracking features present in SuperTracker. Because this tool uses several data sources, double-check results to ensure correct ingredients 44 THE MARKET PLACE
are included in the analysis. For a similar experience, HappyForks recipe analyser pulls data from the USDA and Canadian nutrient databases and includes recipes from food blogs.
SparkPeople Users can track food and physical activity, analyse recipes and create food labels using SparkPeople. Analysing recipes can take a while, since each ingredient must be entered individually. Although SparkPeople pulls data from the USDA nutrient database first, it also includes member-generated ingredients and recipes, which may not be accurate. Other popular options such as MyFitnessPal and SELF Nutrition Data offer similar tools and are designed for consumers. Most use a combination of crowdsourced and third-party nutrient data. When choosing a free tracker, look for one that prioritizes reliable sources, such as the USDA nutrient database, or allows the addition of custom ingredients. For more comprehensive ingredient databases that are geared toward professionals, are regularly updated, contain complete nutrient profiles and provide customer support, consider purchasing a premium program, such as these paid options:
Nutrition Data System for Research (NDSR) NDSR software is the researcher’s choice for dietary analysis. It is one of the most robust programs available for collecting and analysing 24-hour diet recalls, food records, menus and recipes, as well as estimating food group intake. The NDSR database includes approximately 18,000 foods,
with 8,000 brand names, foods from global cuisines and menu items from 23 restaurants. It boasts the most complete set of nutrient values, allowing researchers to go beyond the standard nutrients on a Nutrition Facts panel. NDSR also includes 169 nutrients and components such as caffeine, individual fatty acids, carotenoids, isoflavones and more, making it a valued resource for accuracy in the professional dietary data and research community.
ESHA Food Processor Nutrition Analysis ESHA’s Food Processor program offers solutions for diet and fitness tracking, recipe analysis and menu planning. It contains a database of more than 72,000 foods and recipes, analyses for more than 170 nutrients and nutrient components, and more than 900 individual exercise activities. Food Processor also includes an online companion tool, FoodProdigy, which allows clients to document food intake and physical activity and lets RDNs review inputs for diet assessments.
Nutritionist Pro Like ESHA’s Food Processor, Nutritionist Pro targets professionals and includes a database of more than 82,000 foods and recipes, as well as 120 nutrients. This tool can deliver a thorough nutrient analysis for diets, menus and recipes for people working in health care, retail or food service. Other paid options include NutriBase and cloud-based options such as Nutrihand PRO. Most of them offer a free trial or demo to find the right fit for your computing platform, lifestyle and support needs. Healthy Recipe: Avocado veggie boats

CAN YOU IMAGINE... All too often in Andalucia young puppies are dumped in rubbish bins and in June, six one day old pups were found abandoned to this fate in Maro. Caring for such young pups is a difficult task requiring feeding every two hours, around the clock, made that much harder when you multiply this by six.
Nina’s chance finally came in June when she was chosen by a nice English gentleman who recently moved to the area and he finalised the adoption last month.
when she was just four to five weeks old. This is normally too young to adopt a pup but under these circumstances Nina has now settled into her this was the best option at the new life in a beach flat near time. El Morche where she gets lots of love and several walks a day from her new owner. Plus Nina still gets to spend time with Humphrey, her old kennel mate, when she goes in for the occasional day care visit.
READY FOR ADOPTION The male has now been reserved by a couple in England and received his vaccinations at the end of July. He is now in the midst of a three week waiting period before he can travel to his new home later this month. The rescuer has decided to keep one of the waifs so this leaves three more pups still looking for their forever homes.
WAGGY TAILS Nina is a small Podenco female who was rescued from the campo several years ago. She was brought to the Costa Animal Society (CAS) who had to board her in kennels due to a lack of foster places. Nina spent more than 2 years lingering in kennels waiting for her forever home as younger, cuter dogs were chosen ahead of her.
We have an update on Ossian and Sebastian who are brothers that were owned by an elderly Swedish man who had to return home for medical reasons.
The first female found a new home with a local family
OSSIAN They have lived in kennels for more than two years but last month Ossian was adopted by a lovely retired German couple who live in Almuñecar.

NINA
Both of these wonderful dogs are outgoing, good natured fellows who get along well with other dogs but would probably worry a cat. If you would like to meet any of the Coasta Animal Society (CAS) rescue dogs who are up for adoption please feel free to contact Kurt or Laura at 95 252 1426. CAS CAT CORNER
Earlier this year it looked like Nina caught a break as she was reserved for a foster place in Norway but these plans fell through due to strict requirements for travelling to this country. A Costa Animal Society (CAS) volunteer agreed to help the person who rescued the pups by taking on the care of three of the tykes until they were weaned. They reached this first step in early July and were then housed in kennels as they became more independent.
HUMPHREY
Unfortunately, they already have another female dog so they could not take Sebastian as well. Since Nina and Humphrey were kennel mates for over a year we have paired Sebastian and Humphrey as roommates.
Good news! On the feline front two Costa Animal Society (CAS) cats who were long term residents in a local cattery have been re-homed to a horse livery stable.
Frederick and Amy had been boarded at the cattery since they were kittens but it is often difficult to find homes for black cats as they are overlooked in favour of more attractive felines. This pair will now have the opportunity to live as campo cats with daily care from people but with the freedom to explore their outdoor surroundings. The Costa Animal Society (CAS) also focuses much of its efforts on helping cats continued on page 50

Regularly CAS is called upon to assist stray cats which may require veterinary care such as sterilisation, evaluation and medication for infections or illnesses and/or the treatment of wounds. As always, CAS is in need of fosterers for kittens, especially, but not only, those that need bottle-feeding. Also, we do have several adult cats needing homes or foster homes. All of these cats are fully house-trained, neutered, and vaccinated. For more information on cats see the Facebook group: East of Malaga kittens and cats.

If you feel that you could assist us, please contact on 608 876 488. Many thanks .
CAN YOU HELP CAS? The Costa Animal Society (CAS) is always in need of more volunteer helpers in a number of areas, so if you have spare time to fill, please make contact! In particular, we are currently seeking someone or ones who can help with fundraising and social media. In addition, fosterers are always required to take short-term care of animals until a permanent home can be found. LIAM & FINN
It's the height of summer, the heat is intense and oppressive, the fans at the Refuge kennels are constantly blowing and all the dogs are very far from animated. And yet we are still being inundated with puppies, something which historically usually takes place in the spring. Having just built two kennels, capable of taking three or four puppies each, at a fosterers property, they now have 8 in one and 10 in the other – much to the owners consternation! They will have to be moved on; that's the problem with puppies, they grow up and require very much more care than when they were suckling from their mother. Tail has never had so many puppies looking for a home. Tail has dogs of all shapes and sizes that are adopted by families in Spain and most other European countries and we work with charities in those countries to place the dogs in suitable homes. We do not sell dogs, the adopter pays a small sum towards the innoculations, neutering if old enough, registration chip, and Pet Passport but this is not sufficient to cover these outgoings. The only additional cost is for the road 50 THE MARKET PLACE
or air transport to the dog's destination.

Nerja
was once a sleepy fishing village but now the town has a population of over 21,000. The Balcón de Europa is a magnificent promenade that was made famous by King Alfonso XII , who’s statue now takes pride of place at the far end. Close by is the 17th century Church of El Salvador, and the beautiful gardens of Capistrano Playa. There are many beaches to be found either side and in front of the town, including Burriana with its numerous cafés and restaurants. Here too, you can take advantage of the water sports on offer, including water skiing, scuba diving and sailing. Just outside Nerja on the coast road towards Maro is a very impressive aquaduct which used to supply the local sugar factory.

Torre del Mar
is just 30 minutes from Malaga, and is the beach resort of Velez Málaga. Its population of 21,000 grows between June and September to 150,000. The towns attractions have expanded over the last few years to cope with the demand, and now the four kilometres of beach have been enhanced by an impressive promenade, which stretches all the way to Caleta de Vélez, a port providing over 200 berths and offering sailing and water sports. Throughout the summer, there are many Chiringuitos on the beach, serving fresh barbequed fish and ice cold beers. In 2002, Paseo de Larios was pedestrianized, and is now a tranquil promenade, with plenty of pavement cafés and restaurants. At the seafront end of Larios is a line of bars and discos which continue throughout the night on Fridays and Saturdays. The history of Torre is uncertain, but it is thought that it might have been part of an ancient Greek settlement, known as Mainake, which was destroyed by the Carthaginians. Tombs of the Carthaginians were found at the mouth of the river Velez. More recently, it was a small fishing village until major development began in the 1970’s.

Lake Viñuela
is a 15 minute drive from the N340 Autovia, leaving at the junction for Velez Malaga. Head inland along the A356; this direction also leads to numerous inland white villages. The first turning on our map is to Benamocarra, which is sign posted to the right after the last roundabout into Velez Malaga. This road will take you back over the main road and then also on to Iznate, and divides to take you to Almachar, El Borge and Cutar. The second turning off the A356 is on the right (after the Repsol garage) to Trapiche. Continue on the A356, and immediately you will see another junction on the left, sign posted to Benamargosa, Triana, Comares and Cutar. This road will also take you as far as Rio Gordo (for a scenic drive). There is a popular Spanish bar on the corner of this junction called El Cruz. Back on the A356, continue on and you will pass another junction on the right, to Canillas de Aceituno, and finally you will see Lake Vinuela in front of you. Turn right before the lake for Puente de Don Manuel, Alcaucin, Viñuela and Periana; carry straight on for Los Romanes, Rio Gordo and Colmenar.

Frigiliana
encompass 39.74 sq km within which live just over 3,000 people year round. Frigiliana is a popular tourist destination, and because there are many holiday homes here, the population triples during the summer months. The history of Frigiliana dates from prehistoric times. The village has been inhabited by numerous civilisations from the Phoenicians and Romans to the Arabs, who had the greatest impact on the town’s development. During the Christian reconquest, Frigiliana was the site of numerous battles culminating in the famous battle of the Rock of Frigiliana in 1569 which ended in the complete expulsion of the Moorish people. One can learn the history of this struggle by walking through the streets of the historic section where there are a series of twelve ceramic plaques posted about which explain the entire story.
