Local News Local News Local News Grant of E100,000 for improvement of Nerja's Beaches

Nerja's Council has been awarded over 100,000 euros to improve beaches and equipment in the area. There are a number of specific objectives in awarding the money such as installing concrete walkways, installing rubbish collection containers, creating a shaded area and improving the toilets on Burriana beach and the first aid post. The project is part of the Rural Development Program for Andalucia, European Agicultural Fund for Rural Developement and the Ministry of Tourism and Sport.

Poppy seller moved on from Nerja car boot sale

A lady who has been collecting for the Royal British Legions Poppy Appeal for seven years has been moved away from the gate entrance to the Nerja Car Boot Sale on a Sunday. The President of the Lions Club in Nerja told her that in order to stand by the gate she must pay a fee. But the lady explained that she has been allowed to collect poppy donations in that same place for the last seven years without any problem. Many onlookers rushed to her aid and some even offered to pay the fee for her, but she refused on the grounds that she was collecting money for a charity. She commented that the collection only takes place once a year and the Town Hall issue her with licences to sell poppies in public places in the town and she can even stand at supermarkets in the town. But the President continued to defend himself, saying, "all the charities pay the fee and we cannot discriminate."

Infrastructure have received the project for pedestrianisation of the area of Las Carmelitas, near the Town Hall. This project is set to reactivate the economy, create jobs and promote trade in the centre of the town as well as to convert the Plaza de las Carmelitas into the social centre of co-existence in Velez. The pedestrianisation project was first presented in May 2017 and the city council have worked really hard to make it a reality. The works are expected to take two years and involve an investment of 600,000 euros.

Drought in Malaga - weak infrastructure

Reservoirs in Malaga province are at extremely low levels and with four years of constant below average rainfall this situation looks set to continue. The outlook is so serious that the President of the Junta de Andalucia, Susana Diaz, has said that a decree has been drawn up which will be acted upon if the situation does not improve. There are a number of projects that are outstanding that could alleviate the problem, such as the pipeline between the Costa del Sol and Guadalhorce and

Patricia Gutierrez, Councillor in the area of Popular Traditions at Nerja Town Hall presented this years Christmas poster - Jose Miguel Torrecillas is this year's winning artist. There are many activities to look forward to this year at Christmas in Nerja. On Wednesday 6th December Christmas will officially begin with the unveiling of the Nativity scene. There will be activities for infants at the Centro Giner de los Rios, Christmas stalls, hot chocolate, cultural activities and a lunch for the pensioners in Nerja.

Improvement works to the pond in Maria Zambrano Park, Velez The Councillor for the Environment in Velez has highlighted the effort that is being made to make more efficient use of water by using water from wells. Work is currently underway to the adaptation of irrigation and purification systems in the pond that will allow the return of the ducks on this local park feature. Once the works are finished it will allow a reasonable number of ducks to live in the pond once again and give the pond a greater environmental and aesthetic capacity. The watering of the grass in the park will also come from the well that feeds the pond.

Discovering Salzburg in 10 Hours

By Jessica Infantino Trumble

Salzburg really is alive with the sound of music... from the locations that played a starring role in a certain iconic movie to its celebrated hometown composer and the many unassuming street performers playing melodies in public spaces throughout the Austrian city. While many visitors automatically flock to organized Sound of Music tours in Salzburg, there is so much you can see and do on your own (and on foot) in this city. We found that a full day was just the right amount of time for a first taste of Salzburg. Here’s a snapshot of our day in Salzburg.

9:00am – Mirabell Gardens The train ride to Salzburg seemed to fly by since we used the time to map out our route for the day. After arriving at the Hauptbahnhof train station, it was a short 10-15 minute walk to our first stop, Mirabell Gardens. The meticulously manicured gardens and accompanying 17th century palace were once the home of the Prince-Archbishop and now house the office of Salzburg’s mayor and municipal council. Mirabell Gardens have been open to the public since the 1850s and are filled with fountains, mythological statues and other hidden treasures. Remember the “Do-Re-Mi” number in The Sound of Music? It was partially filmed here, providing the perfect setting for Maria and the von Trapp children to dance around and use its steps as a musical scale.

10 THE MARKET PLACE

10:00am – Old Town Squares After leaving the gardens we walked along the Salzach River and crossed over to the Altstadt, Salzburg’s Old Town. Most sights in the heart of historic Salzburg are easy to explore on foot since this area has been completely pedestrianized. While it was transformed with Christmas markets when we were there, it’s also home to a handful of interesting sights scattered throughout its interconnected squares. We began at Mozartplatz, named after Salzburg’s resident son Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Here you’ll find a statue paying homage to the composer, which was erected in the square in 1842 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of his death. Continuing on to Residenzplatz, this square was heavily influenced by Prince-Archbishop Wolf Dietrich von Raitenau (1587-1612) who set out to make Salzburg the “Rome of the North”. He is responsible for the Baroque buildings here including the Alte Residenz and Neue Residenz (the latter palace houses the Salzburg Museum and 35-bell Glockenspiel that rings at 7am, 11am and 6pm daily), as well as the Salzburger Dom (the cathedral where Mozart was baptized). Stand at the back of Domplatz across from the cathedral and notice how the 2 angles on its façade are “crowning” the statue of Mary in the middle of the square.

By contrast, the neighbouring Kapitelplatz is home to modern art – a giant chess board and golden orb with a statue of a man on top – which was commissioned in 2007. Follow the statue’s gaze upwards for a pretty magnificent view of the Hohensalzburg Fortress. Also nearby is St. Peter’s Cemetery, with its carefully tended graves that are leased for a duration of 10 years (if the rent isn’t paid, then the graves are exhumed). The cemetery dates back to the Middle Ages and was the inspiration for the scene in The Sound of Music when the von Trapp family hid from the Nazis. The adjacent St. Peter’s Church also plays hosts to regular Mozart dinner concerts.

11:00am – Universitätsplatz Just as we were starting to think about finding a place to stop for a quick lunch, we were lucky enough to stumble upon an amazing little market at Universitätsplatz. The Grünmarkt as it’s called (which means “green market”), is a traditional farmers market that dates back to the 18th century and operates in this square daily except for Sundays. With stalls selling everything from fresh flowers to produce, meats, cheeses, bread and more, we grazed enough to constitute a small lunch, which included a gigantic soft pretzel and fresh-baked gingerbread and Linzer cookies for dessert. I made it a point to hunt down a recipe for traditional Linzer cookies when I got home. continued on page 12

12:00pm – Hohensalzburg Fortress After our carb-heavy lunch we were energized for the steep walk up the mountain footpath to the Hohensalzburg Fortress. There’s also a funicular that will take you to the top in less than a minute (included in the price of the Fortress Card combo ticket), but the walk is not as hard as it may look and includes some pretty great vantage points along the way. What’s interesting about this 11th century foreboding fortress is that it was mostly for show. It was built to protect the city from attack, but never actually faced a seige and the royal family instead opted to live in their palace in the Old Town below. Inside you can tour various rooms and exhibits, the inner courtyard as well as the castle’s museum, or return at night for an evening concert at the fortress.

2:00pm – Getreidegasse After walking back down the mountain to the Old Town, we made a special stop at Cafe-Konditorei Fürst on the corner of Getreidegasse. In 1890, Salzburg confectioner Paul Fürst created the Mozartkugel (“Mozart balls”), which he later debuted to the world and won a gold medal for at the 1905 Paris Exposition. Fürst still uses the original recipe today to make these delicious chocolate truffles with pistachio and hazelnut marzipan centres. Trust me, they are too good to pass up. As you continue down Getreidegasse, notice the beautiful wrought iron guild signs above the narrow shopping street, which use pictures rather than words to describe the goods or services offered at each establishment. This “advertising” practice dates back to a time when the majority of the population couldn’t read, but is still upheld today by modern occupants ranging from McDonald’s to Louis Vuitton, as well as other smaller artisans and restaurants. Towards the end of the crowded street at Getreidegasse 9 is Mozart’s Birthplace, where the composer’s family lived for 26 years (Mozart was born here on January 27, 1756). The museum guides you through the third floor rooms previously inhabited by the family, as well as extensive exhibits with artifacts ranging from Mozart’s childhood violin to original scores, portraits and other personal items that bring his story to life. In 1773, the family outgrew this house and moved across the river to what is now known as Mozart’s Residence. This new home was spacious enough for the entire family and as well as the musician’s high-society entertaining, and today’s museum features even more original documents and interesting artifacts like Mozart’s piano. 12 THE MARKET PLACE

4:00pm – Steingasse Around the corner from Mozart’s Residence is Steingasse, a quite cobbled lane that offered a nice respite from the crowds across the river. Walking down this street is like a treasure hunt thanks to all of its unique doors, each one different than the one before it, plus every once in a while we were treated to a postcard-worthy view of the Old Town, peeking out from in between the pastel coloured buildings. There are also a few noteworthy sights on Steingasse to keep an eye out for like the birthplace of Joseph Mohr who wrote the timeless Christmas song “Silent Night” and the workshop where Mozart’s first violin was made.

5:00pm – Panorama Museum When we reached the end of Steingasse we crossed the steel Art Nouveau-style Mozartsteg (“Mozart Bridge”) to get back to the Old Town. Since we had a little more time to kill before we could go to dinner, we snuck in a quick visit to the Panorama Museum (they let us in right at closing time, so check the regular hours). Before the wide use of photography, the practice of creating paintings that showed full panorama landscapes of great cities was very popular. Grab an informational card and try to guess the location of each panorama as you make your way around the museum. In the centre is a circular room with a giant painting that offers a 360-degree perspective of what Salzburg looked like in 1829 (save this for last).

6:00pm – Dinner After the museum, we had just enough time for an early dinner at Zirkelwirt before our train back to Munich. The restaurant is only a few steps from Mozartplatz but felt a world away from the tourist crowds. From the moment we walked in the door, Zirkelwirt’s charm was apparent – it’s rustic, wood interior made you feel as if you were dining in someone’s home rather than in the centre of a popular tourist destination. I learned that Zirkelwirt is an old Gasthaus (German-style inn or tavern with a restaurant, bar and hotel rooms) dating back to 1647. Like much of Salzburg, it was destroyed during WWII bombings but was quickly rebuilt in the 1950s. Its current owner has kept with the tradition of offering home-style cooking at reasonable prices, catering to the local student crowd. On the cold December night we visited, the warm and cozy corner table we sat at was perfect (there’s also outdoor patio seating for warmer weather), our warm and friendly waiter was perfect and our warm traditional food was also perfect. We ordered a Franziskaner dark beer and a glass of house white wine,

which was shortly followed by my beef broth with semolina dumplings and my husband’s plate of roast pork with beer sauce sauerkraut and homemade bread dumplings. The food was hearty but not heavy, so we still had room for dessert – apricot dumplings served with a rich orange-vanilla sauce. We could have lingered here longer after our delicious meal had we not had a train to catch, although that’s something that could definitely be said about Salzburg as a whole. Flights can be booked to Salzburg from Malaga but you must change, normally in Dusseldorf or London.

How to prepare your home for cold and storms It's a good idea to check and prepare your house to face the cold and rain of winter. Here we give you some ideas that will be useful for the coming months. It is time to prepare for the cold and change our wardrobes completely, but, also, it is time to check our houses. With more rainfall and lower temperatures, it pays to check that everything works correctly so you don’t suffer damage that can end up costing a lot of money.

Insulate your home from the cold Generally storms bring in the cold, so before they arrive check the insulation you have in your home. Make sure that the insulation around doors and frames is completely sealed so that no icy air comes in. For this, it is best to opt for quality windows and doors that can be thermally insulated from the outside. In addition to being warmer, it will ensure that the heat does not escape, thus saving on the heating bill.

Install & Take Care of Drain Pipes To deal with rainfall it is beneficial to install down or drainpipes and guttering around the base of the roof of the property to remove excess water

and channel it into a storm drain. It is essential to periodically clean the drains and downspouts to prevent the accumulation of external elements, as these could easily become clogged and become a problem during a storm creating a blockage. Although we think of Spain as a hot country not affected by frost, we can have freezing temperatures in the winter, especially if you are elevated in one of the lovely white villages. If you are in this type of location it's worth ensuring that you thermally insulate any pipes that may be at risk.

Checking the Roof The important thing with the roof is to look and make sure that there are no leaks or cracks. If so, it is better to fix them before the rain comes, otherwise you could find water drops and large puddles appear in the least unexpected place. It is also necessary to clean and remove accumulated debris on the roof, such as dry leaves, wood, animal remains, toys, etc. At this point, it is essential to also the gutters and drains.

Danger: Thunderstorms And what about a thunderstorm? We have to prepare for them, especially if we live in the countryside. While it is true that houses are generally safe places, extreme caution can prevent accidents. During a thunderstorm try not to look out the balcony or have the windows open. Close the doors and windows to avoid drafts, because they attract the rays. If you have a fireplace do not light it; the fire of the chimney produces hot air with ions that increase the conductivity of the air.

Disconnect your Devices In your household it is best to disconnect all appliances and electronic devices because the rays can enter through the electricity wires. In addition to this, we must be aware that sudden surges of voltage can cause our computer or our television to melt extremely quickly. Obviously, there are appliances that we cannot turn off, such as refrigerators or freezers, but if things can be turned off, do it - it is better to prevent an accident if at all possible. Turn off switches and enjoy the storm lying on the sofa with a good book and cosy blanket and candlelight! 14 THE MARKET PLACE

The Royal British Legion, Nerja Branch Well, we ate, drank and were very merry on Friday the 10th Nov at the Poppy Ball. This year as with last, we joined with the Los Romanes branch, and 136 people attended. Music was supplied by Barry Marx and the Juke Box Bandits and the fact that the dance floor was full is testimony to their music and the atmosphere in the room. It was a really fun evening and through the great raffle, and tickets, raised over E700. This will all go to this year's Poppy Appeal which we hope will take our contribution to E10,000 again his year. The British Legion will put that to good use in their work for service and ex servicemen and women and their families. We would particularly like to thank all who donated Raffle prizes, namely La Galeria Nerja, Thai Pass Torrox, Silks Torrox, Rebecca Curtis Wellbeing Centre Torrox, Keith’s Barbers Torrox, Jan & Dave O’Neale, Eileen Ashdown, Dave & Dorothy Allen and Trevor and Judith Breach. On Sunday 12th Nov. we commemorated the fallen at our Remembrance Day service at the Al Andalus hotel and almost 200 people attended. This year our theme was

remembering the fallen but also looking to the future and hoping for peace. Contributions were made by Eleanor O’Neill, Ian Mortimer and Dave Graves. Tom Robinson and his Remembrance Choir gave us beautiful performances of musical compositions arranged by Tom himself, and Jo Robinson sang the Dido's Lament which although sombre was hauntingly moving. We are so very grateful to Tom and the choir for coming along to our Remembrance day event. Although it has a serious and emotive intent, their singing and choice of music made it also a thing of joy. Afterwards about 110 people attended the luncheon at the Caves Restaurant. This proving to be a most enjoyable time for all of us. The food and wine help but it is people who always make these events fun and it certainly was. Some people may believe that now that the war in Afghanistan is over and our troops are no longer deployed there, the

need to raise money has lessened. This is most definitely not true. The British Armed Services are deployed to many parts of the world. Some on peacekeeping duties, some on training, others involved in supplying medical, educational and health commodities, etc. All while maintaining standards of security and freedoms for us. While there is nothing we can do for those who made the ultimate sacrifice, other than to recognise and remember them, we have a great need to look after those who have sustained injuries, physical or mental, and their loved ones who also have to live with the results of conflict. Through our events we raise a very respectable amount each year for the Poppy Appeal and for the last four years, for the Personnel Recovery Centre in Edinburgh. First Driving Impressions – McLaren 720S – UK Press Event, Tetbury

The name McLaren conjures all sorts of thoughts in your mind. It is to most the name associated with motor racing at its best; to others it’s a make of pram and a good pram at that. McLaren is typically British and the world loves them.

T

he all-new 720S is a Super-SuperCar, and follows on from some already brilliant sports cars, some of which are now becoming collectors pieces and making strong money, much more than the original price. The 720S is powered by a 4.0-litre Twin Turbo V8 engine that produces, as the name suggests, a whopping 720ps. It is coupled to a seamless Seven-Speed Gearbox. These two pieces of engineering are a match made in heaven... or Woking. Some of the figures are breathtaking, such as 0-62mph in 2.9 seconds, 0-124mph in 7.8 seconds and 0-186mph in 21.4 secs. But the braking is just as impressive with 186mph to zero in 6.9 seconds and 62mph to stop in 2.8 seconds. So you could go from stop, up to 62mph and back down to stationary in a staggering 5.7 seconds, truly amazing. To say this is an outstanding, high-performance SuperCar, then you would expect a fairly basic interior, with just the minimum of equipment, to reduce weight. But none of that, the cabin is so luxurious with only the best materials used, and so well put together. The cockpit though is not just full of Nappa Leather and Alcantara, Zircon silver and brushed Iridium brightwork and carbon fibre, but also full of very useful technology. The large screen is vertical instead of the usual horizontal, which does look a bit odd to begin with, but does make sense and is very easy to use, and so accurate. On the car I drove it had an optional ‘Nose-Lift’ which works up to a relatively slow speed. This helps when going over those awkward curbs, or road-humps. This McLaren is absolutely loaded with the latest high-tech and high spec performance equipment as standard. It has race-car technology in a very useable road car. Despite having an incredibly quick 0-62mph, and a frightening top speed that really could not be achieved anywhere in the world on regular roads, it can also be tame and very agile. You can drive it effortlessly in heavy traffic, as I found out, at very low speeds. Even at 5mph it is perfect and at no stage did it feel as though it was fed-up, and wanted to be off. There were no signs of the 720S wanting to roar into action without warning, it was so meek and mild. The centre of the car, or the ‘Tub’ as it is known in technical circles is made from carbon-fibre, and is as tough as old-boots, so very strong and makes the occupants feel safe that the car 20 THE MARKET PLACE

will withstand any major shocks. Currently McLaren Tubs are manufactured in Austria, but from mid-2018 some production is moving to South Yorkshire where a brand new factory is currently being built, close to another new-build where Boeing are to produce some aircraft parts - so looking good for Yorkshire. The 720S is built with 91% all-new parts, so only a few carried over from other models. The doors on the 720S are ‘Twin-Hinged dihedral with soft-close’. And to open them there is a small button behind the integral handle. Push the button and the door releases. Lift it up, climb in, and then pull it down to close. Easy, but does look odd. But when you buy a Super-SuperCar, you want it to be different. Push the start button, and the four-litre engine roars into action. When this happens, and despite being sat in complete luxury, you know you are sat in something very special. Then press the ‘D’ for drive and you're off, as quick or as slow as you want, the choice is yours. Everything about the car is so solid, its handling is as you would expect, outstanding, and gives you a bit of a feel as to how a F1 car behaves. Its acceleration is breathtaking, its braking is heart-stopping. It's unbelievable. But yet you are sat amongst the finest materials. Bet those F1 boys wish they could have such luxuries! In 2016 McLaren produced 3,286 cars, with many of those being exported. By 2019 they say this figure will rise to around 4,500 – 5,000 and some time in the future around 50% will be Hybrid. Another great British motor industry success. The combined fuel consumption figure quoted by McLaren is 26.4mpg (I did not do a MPG check while driving the car) and the C02 emission figure is 249g/km. Prices for the McLaren start from £208,000 but add a few bits on that really are necessary, and you can easily put £30,000 on to the price. But for £230,000 you really get a very nice, fully loaded Super-SuperCar. This new car from McLaren is simply a masterpiece, almost a work of art and is so easy to drive. I did drive it very sensibly, and very slowly, as my thoughts were, the slower you drive it, then the longer you are in it…..!!!

December Film & Tapas Evening at FTK The Fellowship of The King moves into the Christmas Season with a Film and Tapas Evening at their premises in Pasaje San Miguel, Nerja on Friday 8th December at 7.30pm with a film called “The Genius Club”. Each year we try to find a film with a Christmas theme in it somewhere and this time we have come up with something quite out of the ordinary. Imagine that it’s Christmas Eve and everyone is focused on the coming festivities; nothing out of the ordinary there - but then you don’t really expect a terrorist who has hidden nuclear device in Washington D.C. to force the president of the United States to round up seven geniuses who all have IQs over 200. They themselves are a motley crew including a casino owner, a biochemist, a professional baseball player, a seminary student, a professor, a painter, and a pizza delivery guy - yes even he has an IQ over 200! The agents of Homeland Security are instructed to take them all to a bomb shelter and explain that they have just one night to come up with answers to the world’s problems, such as war and hunger, and that if they fail, the terrorist will detonate the nuclear bomb hidden in the basement of the ‘genius lair’. “The Genius Club” definitely will not bore you; in fact it’s quite engrossing because it constantly makes the audience wonder just where the movie is going. Yet even

though it’s gripping and mysterious, it’s not an out and out action film, rather it holds our interest by cleverly working through the issues and interweaving the past stories of each genius into the plot. Clever direction and cinematography create the tension that drives this thriller. Torches barely illuminate the metallic walls of the ‘genius’ lair. A giant screen overlooking the genius table provides a ‘1984’ look of Big Brother and then there’s the scoreboard that ticks up or down, dependent on the answers provided by the geniuses. Cut-aways to bird’s-eye-view shots of Washington remind us that there is a world in peril out there. This is a well written & well acted thriller, and its credibility grows as it goes along – so enjoy the puzzles, the world issues, the macabre, and Jack Scalia who plays a totally convincing president - but don’t forget any of the clues en route or there will be holes in your puzzle when the film is done. Each of its characters is particularly well conceived and played;

each has his or her own vital part to play in the film’s progression towards its dramatic finale. A gripping and most unusual film to start our Christmas season - so do join us for drinks and tapas on 8th December as the run-up to Christmas really gets started! All are welcome; for more information call James on 951 834 432 or Leslie on 958 658 439 or email fotk.spain@gmail.com

Unique Spanish Christmas Traditions Many countries have their own special Christmas customs and Spain is no exception. Most people know about the Three Kings that arrive bringing Spanish children their presents and sweets galore but there are some other unique Spanish traditions that perhaps are not so well known, especially in other parts of Spain!

Santa Claus is not coming to town! We should all know that the Three Kings are very much part of the normal tradition at Christmas in Spain. Every year Spanish children must wait until the 6th of January to receive their Christmas presents (a long wait I know!!) and on the evening of the 5th of January there are huge processions with the Three Kings appearing in every city, town and village throwing sweets for the children to collect. However in Galicia, in the North West of Spain, a mythical coal miner named El Apalpador feels children's tummies to see if they've been eating well. Children deemed undernourished are given small yummy treats and he may leave a little present behind. In the Spanish provinces of Basque Country and Navarre, Olentzero brings the gifts for the children on Christmas Eve. He looks like an overweight peasant,

wearing farmer's clothes and smoking a pipe. He leaves the gifts and wants food and alcohol in return!

The most wonderful, fun time of the year. A very special Spanish tradition is called El Aguinaldo, where on Christmas day children visit their relatives or neighbours and sing Christmas carols. In exchange for their singing they are given sweets or a bit of money. On the 28th December over the Christmas period is Spain's version of our April Fools Day, called El Dia de los Innocentes (The Day of the Innocents). Pranks are generally harmless but could be things like sticking a drawing on somebody's back without them knowing. In the city of Cadiz children take part in what is called El Arrastre where just before the Three Kings are due to come the children take empty cans and string them on a piece of rope and drag them around town, making lots of noise. This custom is meant to call the attention of the Three Kings so that they remember to leave the children presents.

Christmas Log In the Spanish region of Catalonia, children receive presents from a pooping log called Tio de Nadal or the Christmas Log. In the weeks leading up to Christmas, the families feed Tio de Nadal little treats every day, and cover him with a blanket each night to keep him warm. On Christmas Eve, children beat Tio de Nadal with sticks to help him poop out presents, usually they are small sweet treats, nuts and sweets that can be shared by everyone. Catalonia is also the birthplace of another pooping Christmas character, El Caganer or 'The Crapper'. He usually appears in the very popular Belen or Nativity scene which is a big thing during the Christmas season in Spain. All towns have a large Nativity scene and usually lots of businesses and schools too. El Caganer is usually a peasant squatting down in the Nativity over a large pile of poop. Lots of Spanish people think this character included in the Belen is highly amusing. It is certainly one of the most humerous Spanish traditions at Christmas!!

Manish's Zodiac predictions - December Manish Kumar Arora, K.P. Astrologer, Numerologist, Tarot Card Reader & Vastu Consultant Facebook: manishastroconsultant email: manish@manishastrologer.com Aries ( 21 March – 19 April )

This month can open up financial doors for you where you least expect them, and most likely involving resources that are already around you but that are untapped. Your higher mind is expanding, and you might be considering broadening your knowledge in a more informal manner. Your belief systems and personal philosophies are especially important to you, and you are more inclined to share them with those younger than you.

Taurus ( 20 April – 20 May )

You look for new ways to generate cash flow, and you stand to gain for all your strenuous efforts. Your goal is financial independence this month. You could find that you are pressured when it comes to how you go about achieving your goals on a business level, as well as on a personal level. You may attract an exciting love affair into your life during this period, or breathe new life into an existing one.

Gemini ( 21 May – 20 June)

Much of your focus is on personality development and subtle changes in the people and groups you associate with. You stop to look around you and assess situations before moving forward, instead of impulsively jumping in. Confidence is the key - faith in the universe and in your ability to do the right thing instinctively will get you everywhere now. Love and relationship issues may also come up for inspection.

Cancer ( 21 June – 22 July )

You have an increased need for recognition and appreciation during this period. You are able to find avenues for self-expression quite easily, and the way you go about deriving pleasure out of life is markedly different, and hugely more interesting, than usual. Life is stimulating to you and unusual and fun people come into your life. It is a strong period for reviewing past money matters.

Leo ( 23 July – 22 August )

Your dreams and visions are richer than ever, and you experience a magical opportunity to tap into your intuition and imagination. Your personal belief system is transforming dramatically, and you are learning from a broader set of people and experiences than you ever have. You are drawn to people who are free-spirited at this point in your life. Friendships that are stodgy or limiting may very well be left behind.

Virgo ( 23 August – 22 September )

Your ability to move forward on a direct path without as much doubt is increased. You are more able to inspire confidence in others as a result Social activity increases, and you enjoy greater freedom of thought, inspiration, and fresh ideas and insights that seem to come out of the blue. Expanding your social circle is bound to expand your happiness and satisfaction from more broadranging experiences and perspectives. 28 THE MARKET PLACE

Libra ( 23 September – 22 October )

You may find yourself more ambitious than ever This period also offers you a dose of reality when you might very well need it most - when you have an urge to live beyond your means. Striking a balance between your attention to your career and to your family life is necessary. Taking steps to improve your family and home life as well as your career and public life will be in order.

Scorpio ( 23 October – 21 November )

You can find new opportunities, open up to new possibilities, and broaden your mind and world. You can also see that when things go wrong, they get worse in a hurry. You can be more comfortable with intimacy, and have less patience for superficial connections. You want your connections to have depth and meaning, to be solid and strong.

Sagittarius ( 22 November -21 December )

You want to commit yourselves to the people you care about and the projects you are passionate about. You feel good with loved ones, and enjoy getting some one-on-one attention. You can enter into new relationships and partnerships, and you can also focus on your family and home life, trying to work on issues you may have with relatives, or decide if you need to walk away from this person for your own emotional well-being.

Capricorn ( 22 December – 19 January )

It’s a good time to focus on yourself and do the things you want to do for you. You want to come out of the shadows and be in the middle of the stage for all to see. You can take love more seriously, want to take a love relationship to the next level and share your love with others, or decide to call it quits with someone after realizing it’s not going to lead to anything at any point.

Aquarius ( 20 January – 18 February )

You could accomplish a dream that you’ve been working on, or at least get closer to it. Conversely, you could give up on a dream, believing it’s too unrealistic. You could give up a cause, or feel more emotionally invested in one. You may only feel comfortable being affectionate in private, and don’t want to engage in any public displays. If single, you could begin a relationship in secret.

Pisces ( 19 February – 20 March )

You’re focused on your life path, the direction that you’re going in, and how you want your life to develop long-term. You may come across as more distant emotionally and concerned with your public image. You have an easier time making the money that you need, though you also have an easier time spending money, especially on beautiful items. You’ll want more intimacy and passion in your romantic relationship.

Health, Body & Soul Love your life more with advice on how to lead a healthy lifestyle

New link between early menopause and extreme weight loss Unfortunately, a new study has found a link between early menopause and extreme weight loss.

Turns out, you've been storing your perfume all wrong

Plenty of people love to display all their perfumes in the bathroom or on their bedroom window sill, but it's not the best place for them. In fact, due to the sensitive chemical makeup of eau de toilette and eau de parfum, the way to store them is to pop them in the fridge. Storage expert Vlatka Lake, marketing manager at Space Station explained: "To prolong the scent of your favourite fragrance, sometimes it is best to store them in a refrigerator. Many of us keep our prized perfume collection on display on our dressing tables, but perfumes and colognes with high oil concentrates can break down over time when exposed to light and heat. Remember to always keep fragrances away from windowsills and bathrooms. And if your fridge is full, a dry, cold storage cupboard is just as good." Another handy tip that perfume lovers can benefit from - especially as party season approaches - is to rub Vaseline on pulse points before spritzing your favourite scent to make it last longer. It's also been recommended to spray perfume straight on to skin freshly moisturised with an unscented cream. The oily base will retain the fragrance for longer. Similarly, you can add in the last few drops of a favourite scent into a plain cream to make a gorgeous scented moisturiser. 34 THE MARKET PLACE

The Human Reproduction study by epidemiologists at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, in the US, found that women who are underweight, have previously been underweight or who have had dramatic losses in weight a few times, are more likely to go through menopause before they turn 45. The researchers tested 80,000 women and followed them from young adulthood into their menopause years while also gathering information about their teen years before the study began. Researchers found that those who were underweight during their early adulthood as well as their mid adulthood, were

30 per cent more likely to go through menopause earlier than women who were lean or in a normal weight range. On the flip-side of the scale, overweight women had a lower risk for early menopause (but of course, obesity comes with other health risks). Yes, genetic factors like the number of eggs in your ovaries, play a role in influencing the onset of menopause, but the study suggests there are more implications of being underweight, and long-term risks of an eating disorder. “Underweight woman may want to consider discussing the potential implications of these findings with their doctors,” lead researcher, Dr Kathleen Szegda says. General wisdom says that maintaining a BMI between 18.5 and 24.9 will keep you in the healthy weight range.

Five things that are secretly draining you Here are five things that might be secretly draining you. 1. Trying to manage your time instead of your energy – time is fixed, but energy can be created. Those who are consistently productive know how to create it. It’s time to forget everything you were taught about time management, and start to implement “energy management”. Figure out what times of the day you perform best and have the most energy, so you can plan to tick off heavier tasks during those periods. 2. Other people’s negativity – or even your own. People who complain and seem to have more problems than solutions are a massive drain on energy. Positive psychology studies show that if you want to be more productive, then you need to increase your positivity or optimism. 3. Being a slave to notifications – we’re all exposed to hundreds of notifications a day – emails, Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, texts and calls. These can all be incredibly fatiguing and are leading us to have shorter attention spans as a result. In order to be productive, switch off all notifications and access your devices at set times of the day. 4. Not eating right or moving around – everyone knows that movement increases your brain’s ability to be more productive. Without movement, your brain is sluggish and not thinking at its optimum level. Remember to integrate some form of exercise or movement throughout the

day, even if it’s a brisk 20-minute walk. As well as movement, food plays a significant role in your enthusiasm at work. Fuel your brain and body with nourishing foods. 5. Letting ‘bad stress’ get to you – our brains need a certain amount of stress to think clearly and sharply. But too much stress causes the rational part of the brain to shut down and give way to the amygdala - the fright/flight response. Unfortunately it can’t distinguish between real danger and the danger of a deadline, so if you are constantly in a high stress mode your productivity and energy will both decline. Take five deep breaths using your diaphragm instead of your chest, and send a message to the amygdala that you have everything under control.

Meditation is such a powerful technique that, after only 8 weeks the brain's structure changes

Tuesday 12th December 2017, 6pm The Cultural Centre (Casa Cultura), Calle Granada, Nerja THE HONOURABLE EAST INDIA COMPANY EAST WEST TRADE 1600 - 1800 CHINESE EXPORT AND CHINOISERIE A fully illustrated presentation by Vivienne Lawes Sponsored by Dr Rik Heymans, Nerja With a glass of wine Chinese painted silk, c.1765-70 This lecture explores the way in which the East India Company developed its methods of trade. It shows how the 17th century textile trade with India established a methodology for sending out patterns to be copied by the artisans, replacing the original system of importing textiles that were native in design. The system of sending out patterns to be copied was the norm by the time the East India Company made inroads into China in the 18th century – a precursor of modern trading methods. The Company rapidly evolved its strategies, sending out several ships at a time to China and eventually setting up permanent settlements in Macao. The currency and balance of trade is explained, and methods of production are illustrated with a number of Chinese export pieces, predominantly Chinese painted silks but also including furniture and porcelain. The concludes with drawing the distinction between Chinese export and Chinoiserie, using examples made in Europe during the same period. About Vivienne Lawes Viv Lawes is a lecturer, curator, author and journalist, with over twenty years’ experience in the art market. She works at several prestigious Higher Education institutions in London, leading the Modern and Contemporary unit of the Asian Art & Its Markets semester course at Sotheby’s Institute and the History of Decorative Style (c.1400-1970) course at the City & Guilds of London Art School. She also lectures for the University of the Arts and IESA (Institut d’Etudes Supérieures des Arts), London. As Senior UK Consultant to Singapore gallery One East Asia since 2011, she has co-curated many exhibitions of Southeast Asian modern and contemporary art in London and Singapore. Running down the fridge to reduce food waste

Don’t you feel guilty when you realise food in the refrigerator has gone bad and items in the cupboard have grown old? I do! Stop staring at me with all your overgrown eyes, potato! The guilt cuts even deeper when meat gets thrown away. If I’m going to be an omnivore, shouldn’t I at least make sure the animal’s life wasn’t taken in vain? So how can we keep from wasting food and money? Running down the fridge. And the cupboard. A cross between leftovers and new meals, running down the kitchen is a mindful effort to use food before it becomes waste, and to minimise purchasing new food when an existing cupboard or fridge item would work instead. This summer, I decided to live this concept. I scored eight pounds of discounted tomatoes at the end of the day at a local farmers market, thinking I’d make a big pot of tomato sauce. The only problem was that I couldn’t fit that many raw tomatoes in even my biggest pot. So some tomatoes went into the pot and some went on a baking sheet to roast, and everything was processed by my immersion blender in the end. For protein, all I had to do was open my refrigerator door. There were two small chicken breasts that had been thawed a few days earlier but hadn’t been cooked because I had an unexpected flurry of evening activities that week. Time to use them up. Fresh tomato sauce on top of chicken. Yum! And just like that, the tomatoes and chicken were saved from the bin. To make it a complete meal, I cooked some dry pasta that was already in the cupboard and topped it with leftover string beans that had been sitting next to the defrosted chicken. A nutritious, delicious and guilt-free meal! To use up some courguette recently, I tried out courguette fritters for the first time. Intending to run down the kitchen 44 THE MARKET PLACE

items with this recipe, I tested a few swaps. Grating in two potatoes added starch that usually comes from flour. There was only one egg in the house, so instead of buying more, I sprinkled in chia seeds. They served double-duty giving the fritters shape and sopping up water given off by the produce. Making use of in-season zucchini and finally using some chia seeds? Success! Sometimes the answer isn’t as obvious. When I worked at a restaurant I once rescued eight cups of mushroom stock and a big pile of portobello stems that would otherwise have been trash. Searching the internet for “things to do with mushrooms” was a start, but soon I realised the answer was already in my recipe file. I made one of my favourite sautéed chicken dishes, but traded chicken stock for mushroom stock. And, instead of adding one can of mushrooms, in went … what is the exact measurement of “a big pile?” It was a nice variation on a familiar dish that pushed me out of my culinary comfort zone - and the mushrooms were eaten rather than discarded. Running down the kitchen gives me a feeling of accomplishment. It reduces food waste, squeezes every penny of my money’s worth out of my purchases, and encourages me to think creatively about ingredients and recipes. Recipe: Courgette and Corn Fritters

Local animal charities C.A.S. (Costa Animal Society) CAS HOLIDAY GREETINGS the tone deaf can quietly As the year comes to an end, the Costa Animal Society (CAS) would like to express our gratitude to all of our friends and volunteers who have been fantastic in all aspects of rescuing and rehoming animals in need. From business sponsors to shop volunteers, from private kennels to fosterers, and especially to the work of our veterinarian partners, thank you. From those who take care of the paperwork enabling us to send wonderful dogs to our sister charities in Northern Europe and Scandinavia, to the volunteers who drive them to the airport and to those who fly with them, muchisimas gracias! And, especially a huge hug and big kiss on the lips (only a hug for Paul) to the magazine, newspaper and radio station folk who pro bono help us to get the word out on this issue of animal welfare. Hopefully one day we won’t need your help, great progress is being made, but until then your support is invaluable.

HERE WE COME A-WASSAILING

What better way of celebrating Yuletide than an evening of carolling at the Coach & Horses in Nerja on Friday, December 15 beginning at 7.00pm. Those who can carry a tune are particularly welcome, while 48 THE MARKET PLACE

enjoy the Burger & Hot Dog Bar with all the trimmings. There will be a Luxury Hamper Draw as well as a Christmas Quiz. Entrance is E10. To reserve in advance, please ring 952 52 0071.

HAPPY TAILS Sometimes people ask the Costa Animal Society (CAS) why we send Tim dogs to Northern European countries so we thought we would provide a short description of the process. Most people who work to rescue animals in Andalucia will tell you the task is monumental with around 15,000 dogs abandoned each year in this region alone and there are very limited foster and permanent homes available. The end result is that literally thousands of dogs are placed in rescue shelters (if they are lucky) while the unfortunate ones meet an untimely death in a local pound. At the same time, in Scandinavian countries as well as Holland and Germany there are strict neutering policies and limits placed on breeding by the governments so they actually have a shortage of dogs available for adoption. With our local animal societies struggling to find homes for rescued animals and with more being abandoned everyday it only makes sense for groups like CAS to work closely with sister charities in Northern Europe to find good places in those countries. Two prime examples are Tiny Tim and Harvey. Tiny Tim was rescued from a busy campo road hiding under a car, trying to pinch cat food left out for a couple of street cats in early October. Fortunately, he is very cute

and small and he was quickly reserved by a Norwegian family. However, this is only the beginning of the journey because dogs travelling to Norway require a microchip, passport and two rabies jabs (three weeks apart) as well as the other normal vaccinations. After waiting six weeks for the rabies vaccines to take effect the dogs must then undergo a rabies titer blood test to show they have sufficient antibodies in their blood stream. The lab results take another two weeks and then a flight has to be arranged so from start to finish it takes several months for a dog to be prepared for Norway. If there is no foster place available during the prep time CAS has to place the dog into kennels while they wait for a travel date. Tim is nearing the end of this process and will hopefully be in his new home before Christmas. Harvey was found wandering the streets of Caleta de Velez Harvey by a Good Samaritan in August and the rescuer spent several weeks trying to locate his owner to no avail. He spent a couple of months in kennels and if it were not for the efforts of our sister charity in Germany he would probably still be looking for a home. Fortunately, with their help Harvey went to a foster home in Cologne on November 2 and will soon be chosen for adoption. Needless to say each dog that is rescued requires a significant effort to be rehomed and the vet costs/ kennel fees involved always

exceed any adoption fee that CAS charges. Please keep this in mind when attending fund raising events or making donations because CAS and the other local animal charities could not do their work without your support.

CAS SHOP NEWS The Costa Animal Society (CAS) Shop is located next door to the Good Stuff Café in Nerja at No. 2 Calle Castilla Perez. We are open Monday to Saturday 10.00am until 2.00pm. We are always interested in hearing from people who would like to join our shop volunteers. One four hour shift once a week makes a big difference. For more information you can ring the shop on 689 314 350. Please note: the shop will be closed on December 6, 8, 25, 26, 27 for holidays.

COULD YOU HELP CAS? The Costa Animal Society is always in need of more volunteer helpers in a number of areas, so if you have spare time to fill, please make contact! For a no-obligation chat, contact Vera on 95 252 9670 for general enquiries. Simone on 619 903 815 can answer queries about airport runs in English or German. And despite the tough times, money is still needed to cope with the continuous flow of abandoned dogs and cats requiring help from the Costa Animal Society. If you could donate a little to help the animals, CAS would be most grateful. Bank: Cajamar Account Name: Costa Animal Society Account Number: 3058 0728 03 2720100283 BIC-Swift Code : CCRIES2A

This lovely friendly kitten needs a permanent home. She is called Dora, she is about 6 months old and has been neutered, chipped, and vaccinated, she’s a bit shy with new people but once she gets to know you she will happily curl up next to you on the sofa, she is also happy around dogs once she gets to know them. email: cragb2015@gmail.com or call on 693 047 935 Continued on page 50

was once a sleepy fishing village but now the town has a population of over 21,000. The Balcón de Europa is a magnificent promenade that was made famous by King Alfonso XII , who’s statue now takes pride of place at the far end. Close by is the 17th century Church of El Salvador, and the beautiful gardens of Capistrano Playa. There are many beaches to be found either side and in front of the town, including Burriana with its numerous cafés and restaurants. Here too, you can take advantage of the water sports on offer, including water skiing, scuba diving and sailing. Just outside Nerja on the coast road towards Maro is a very impressive aquaduct which used to supply the local sugar factory.

Torre del Mar

is just 30 minutes from Malaga, and is the beach resort of Velez Málaga. Its population of 21,000 grows between June and September to 150,000. The towns attractions have expanded over the last few years to cope with the demand, and now the four kilometres of beach have been enhanced by an impressive promenade, which stretches all the way to Caleta de Vélez, a port providing over 200 berths and offering sailing and water sports. Throughout the summer, there are many Chiringuitos on the beach, serving fresh barbequed fish and ice cold beers. In 2002, Paseo de Larios was pedestrianized, and is now a tranquil promenade, with plenty of pavement cafés and restaurants. At the seafront end of Larios is a line of bars and discos which continue throughout the night on Fridays and Saturdays. The history of Torre is uncertain, but it is thought that it might have been part of an ancient Greek settlement, known as Mainake, which was destroyed by the Carthaginians. Tombs of the Carthaginians were found at the mouth of the river Velez. More recently, it was a small fishing village until major development began in the 1970’s.

Lake Viñuela

is a 15 minute drive from the N340 Autovia, leaving at the junction for Velez Malaga. Head inland along the A356; this direction also leads to numerous inland white villages. The first turning on our map is to Benamocarra, which is sign posted to the right after the last roundabout into Velez Malaga. This road will take you back over the main road and then also on to Iznate, and divides to take you to Almachar, El Borge and Cutar. The second turning off the A356 is on the right (after the Repsol garage) to Trapiche. Continue on the A356, and immediately you will see another junction on the left, sign posted to Benamargosa, Triana, Comares and Cutar. This road will also take you as far as Rio Gordo (for a scenic drive). There is a popular Spanish bar on the corner of this junction called El Cruz. Back on the A356, continue on and you will pass another junction on the right, to Canillas de Aceituno, and finally you will see Lake Vinuela in front of you. Turn right before the lake for Puente de Don Manuel, Alcaucin, Viñuela and Periana; carry straight on for Los Romanes, Rio Gordo and Colmenar.

La Herradura

nestles between the Punta de la Mona to the east and the rock of Cerro Gordo to the west. The bay enjoys shelter from west winds creating mostly crystal-clear waters, and is a popular location for water sports & paragliding. There are numerous beach bars and restaurants serving specialities of the region, including tropical salads, fresh fish or paella. The Marina del Este near La Herradura is tucked betwen Punta de la Mona to the west and Cotobro to the east. It boasts a beautiful port, elegantly designed to incorporate select shops, art galleries, bars and restaurants. This small strip of coast also claims to be the best place to dive between Almeria and Gibraltar, and is home to one of the areas leading diving schools.

Frigiliana

encompass 39.74 sq km within which live just over 3,000 people year round. Frigiliana is a popular tourist destination, and because there are many holiday homes here, the population triples during the summer months. The history of Frigiliana dates from prehistoric times. The village has been inhabited by numerous civilisations from the Phoenicians and Romans to the Arabs, who had the greatest impact on the town’s development. During the Christian reconquest, Frigiliana was the site of numerous battles culminating in the famous battle of the Rock of Frigiliana in 1569 which ended in the complete expulsion of the Moorish people. One can learn the history of this struggle by walking through the streets of the historic section where there are a series of twelve ceramic plaques posted about which explain the entire story.
