Guide to Visiting Paris - Part 2
Following on from last month, here is the second part of the guide to visiting Paris, perhaps a pre-Christmas trip for a spot of shopping ? By Jessica Infantino Trumble
I
n terms of shopping in Paris you’ll find everything from big department stores (aka les grand magasins Le Bon Marché, Printemps and Galeries Lafayette) to every luxury brand under the sun as you walk down the ChampsÉlysées and tons of smaller boutiques and specialty shops throughout the city. And while there’s no shortage of chintzy souvenir stores in Paris, a unique alternative are the green metal bouquiniste stalls along the banks of the Seine and if you are plannning your visit around Christmas, don't forget the gorgeous Christmas
stalls. Markets are also quintessentially Parisian and each neighbourhood has its own where on certain days of the week you’ll find amazing fresh produce and other locally produced food items, perfect for just browsing or for assembling your very own picnic. By no means is this an exhaustive list of all Paris has to offer. While it may be tempting to try to pack in as much as possible, my biggest piece of advice is to go with the intention of someday returning so you can focus and enjoy your time.
The Galeries Lafayette decorated at Christmas
Where to Eat and Drink Paris is one of the best places for food with options ranging from the humblest sidewalk cafes to Michelin star restaurants and everything in between. And the good thing is you don’t have to eat fancy to eat well in Paris. For example, my favourite way to start the day is at a café with a coffee and a pastry – a café au lait (coffee with hot milk) and pain au chocolat (chocolatefilled croissant) to be exact, along with some fruit from the market to complete the meal. For lunch, I typically eat something small on the go and there is tons of street food throughout Paris ranging from baguette sandwiches and crêpes to ethnic options like dim sum, kebabs and falafel (I highly recommend L’As du Fallafel on Rue des Rosiers in the Marais). French cuisine can be intimidating, but you can’t go wrong with classic dishes like boeuf bourguin, coq au vin, salade niçoise (I also love

a salade de chèvre chaud topped with warm goat cheese) or soupe à l’oignon at a traditional brasserie. The traditional steak frite is also a must in Paris, and one of the more exciting places to indulge in this bistro favourite is Le Relais de l’Entrecôte. The city is also rich with every type of international cuisine you can think of, and I always like to seek out pizza at least once on a trip (my top pick thus far is Ober Mamma also in the Marais). Bottom line, it helps to do a little research before you go so you have a few restaurants in your back pocket (no one makes a good decision when they’re hangry). For at least one meal I highly suggest a picnic in the park.

This is your opportunity to visit a local market and specialty stores like a boulagerie and formangerie (the “-erie stores” as I like to call them) to buy bread, cheese, meat, fruit and of course, wine. The Jardin du Luxembourg is one of my favourite spots to picnic, but there are many places where you can enjoy your meal ranging from the Champ de Mars across from the Eiffel Tower to Place des Vosges, Jardin des Plantes and the banks alongside the Seine. Five Homes with Amazing Kitchens In most homes the kitchen is one of the most important rooms. That is where the cooking takes place and is the key hub for families, couples or single people when they have guests.
The kitchen should be a comfortable practical space, that meets the needs of the household, but above all, allow us to have everything within easy reach while we prepare the food. There also needs to be some good aesthetics and design going on. A beautiful bright and pleasant kitchen can become the perfect space to enjoy eating, talking, laughing and living with those we love the most. Here we take a look at five amazing kitchens. In them you will find all the inspiration you need to carry out your own grand kitchen design. 1. A classic kitchen (right) Those who are looking for a classic home complete with a dream kitchen, look no further. This large house has a spectacular kitchen that is certainly impressive. The kitchen has a large island and is fully equipped with appliances and quality materials. Marble, soft colours and perfect lighting in this kitchen make it the ideal place to serve up five star dishes.
2. Different styles in a kitchen (below) Two or more styles can coexist in a kitchen and this example shows off that fact to full effect. This city centre apartment has a lot of character and one of the most important places is the kitchen. This is an independent kitchen that preserves the original stone wall and vaulted ceilings. This beautiful kitchen combines some old elements with an industrial feel. It compliments the dining room which is near to the patio. 3. Integrated living/dining room and kitchen (see page 14, top right) Not all homes can afford to dedicate an exclusive space for the kitchen. Lots of kitchens these days blend with the dining room and or lounge. In this apartment the kitchen blends the rooms together effortlessly. In reality it is a very simple kitchen but fully equipped with all the essential appliances and good quality materials and finish. It is functional and practical and day to day living in this style of home is easy to achieve.
4. Elegance and distinction (top of page) Within this house, the kitchen could be a luxury lounge. It is at the very heart of this house’s design. It is a kitchen with an island and is spacious and beautiful, with a nice dining area, is well lit and a great space to enjoy cooking and eating as a family. 12 THE MARKET PLACE

With a high, vaulted ceiling, it is impossible to look at without your jaw dropping. The columns, which are part of the original construction, contribute to give the room that vanguard feel.

"The Fury of Colour" by Francisco Iturrino - until the 3rd March 2019.
Christmas Lights in Malaga Until 6th January
The Christmas season in Malaga begins with the switching on of its decorative lights at the end of November. Malaga spends over 500,000E each year on it's Christmas lighting display, which boasts hundreds of thousands of LED bulbs. Celebrations are centred around the beautifully illuminated Calle Larios, and there is always a majestic Christmas tree in the Plaza de la ConstituciĂłn. If you've never seen Christmas lights Malaga style, it's well worth a visit!
With this exhibition the Museo Carmen Thyssen Malaga pays tribute to Francisco Iturrino (Santander, 1864 - Cagnes-sur-Mer, 1924), one of the leading artists represented in our permanent collection, and to help settle a historical debt: the unfair silencing of a pioneer in Spanish avant-garde art of the first quarter of the twentieth century.
MIMA MALAGA From 26th December to 4th January 2019. At the Malaga Trade Fair and Conference Centre. MIMA is one of the most emblematic Christmas events in Malaga, a meeting place for children from 4 to 12 years of age where fun and learning go hand in hand, creating great times for all the family.

Christmas Holiday Travel Gift Guide By Jessica Infantino Trumble, www.boardingpasstraveler.com
The Christmas holidays are really close now and while the retail season seems to start earlier and earlier each year, there’s something nice about knocking your shopping out sooner rather than later so you can spend more time enjoying all of the festivities that come with this time of year. And for the person on your list who’s already dreaming about where their 2019 travels will take them, my annual gift guide may be a good place to start for inspiration. This year’s roundup includes gift giving ideas for 8 different types of travellers to cover everyone on your holiday shopping list. 1. FOR THE FOODIE: Global Spices One of the best things about travel is the food. And while many of us return home with the hope of recreating specific dishes, it’s hard to succeed without the right spices. Problem solved thanks to World Spice Merchants, which offers an amazing assortment of more than 200 spices and seasonings from around the globe. Choose a starter kit with 16 different spices and companion cookbook, or shop by spice region or type and get cooking. No passport required. www.worldspice.com 2. FOR THE FITNESS-FOCUSED: YoFoMat Sticking to your workout routine on the go can be challenging, but the packable YoFoMat from Khatland makes it just that much easier. This full-size mat comes in a variety of thicknesses and colors and folds down to about the size of a textbook so you can squeeze in some yoga, pilates, core work (planks anyone?), etc. wherever you are. It also comes with a handy carrying case for easy transport and storage. www.khataland.com 3. FOR THE FASHIONISTA: Jewelry Organizer This leather jewelry organizer is perfect for the girl who has everything, or at least the girl that hates untangling her jewelry while traveling. It’s small and compact with a secure zipper closure, and incudes a pouch in the lid, ring holders and two removable dividers so you can customize it to your fit needs. www.amazon.com

4. FOR THE GUY’S GUY: Shaving Kit Grooming on the road is a no brainer thanks to the Dollar Shave Club’s Traveler Bundle. It includes travel-sized versions of their easy shave butter and post shave cream along with a durable, water-resistant bag. Combine this bundle with one of the Dollar Shave Club’s trial kits for even more mini products to round out the perfect travel routine. www.dollarshaveclub.com 5. FOR THE OUTDOORS ENTHUSIAST: Camping Hammock For the outdoorsman (or woman) who has everything, I can’t think of a more versatile, not to mention relaxing, gift idea than a double hammock. I particularly like the DoubleNest Hammock from Eagle Next Outfitters, which is super durable, lightweight and easily stuffs into its built-in storage pouch (hammock straps sold separately). It’s ideal for camping, hiking or wherever your travels take you, even if it’s only as far as your own backyard. Plus, for every hammock sold the company plants two trees in a place of need. www.eaglesnestoutfittersinc.com 6. FOR THE SAVVY PACKER: Foldable Duffle Bag Pack light without worrying about not having enough room for what you may bring back during your travels thanks to the Fold-Up Bag from Paravel. Self-described as the perfect extra bag, it zips flat into its own self-contained pouch and unfolds to a full-size duffel that can be used for as a
carry on or extra bag coming home (not to mention for daytrips or excursions while you’re traveling). I especially love the bag’s simple, beautiful design that comes in a variety of eye-catching colour combinations. Monogram embroidery is also available for an extra personal touch. www.tourparavel.com 7. FOR THE DREAMER: Push Pin Globe For those with perpetual wanderlust, this cork globe is a fresh update to the typical push pin travel map. Use colored pins to track your travels, from where you’ve been to where you want to go next and everything in between. It’s available in two sizes and with a simple, modern design it makes for a great addition to any desk or bookshelf. Let the daydreaming begin. www.uncommongoods.com 8. FOR THE TINY TRAVELLER: Travel Bingo Cards Visiting a new place is like one big scavenger hunt for kids and these city-specific Bingo cards are fun the entire family can get in on. The beautiful watercolour illustrations first caught my eye, highlighting sites, food and other destination-specific details in cities including London, Paris, Venice, Amsterdam, and San Francisco. Each listing includes a set of 5 cards so you can play along with up to 4 of your closest family and friends. www.etsy.com

Car News
by Martin Ward
First Driving Impressions - Audi Q8, UK Press Event, Buckinghamshire The Q8 is the latest addition to what is an extensive range of cars; saloons, estates, SUV’s, convertibles and coupes. In the Audi portfolio there are 51 in total. In 2001 they only offered 17.
O
n paper, the Q8 shouldn’t work. It looks like it is called the wrong thing – Q8, and based on Audi’s badging system, the bigger the car, the bigger the number on the badge: A3 is bigger than an A1, a A8 is bigger than a A6, a Q5 is bigger than a Q3... you get the picture. But going against that well tried and tested policy, the Q8 is smaller than a Q7, but bigger than a Q5. The Q8 is 4,986mm long and 2,190mm wide (inc mirrors) compared to a Q7 at 5,052mm and 2,212mm and a Q5 at 4,663 and 2,140. But to say the Q8 is small is a vast mistake. It is, in fact, huge. The Q8, despite being smaller than a Q7 is the Flagship of the Audi Q family, and so deserves the 8 Badge. The Q8 is a large, executive five seat SUV, that has some fantastic and bold lines. The ‘haunches’ or ‘shoulders’ over the rear wheels are very distinctive, and are following the design language of some other recently launched Audi models. It does look good. Available at launch is the Q8 50 TDI 286ps s line Tiptronic, which is the car we drove on the event. Just to explain the recently introduced badging system, which is a bit confusing and probably unnecessary: A 25 badge means it is up to 106hp. 30 is between 107hp to 127hp, 35 has a power output between 145hp to 159hp, 40 is 223hp to 244hp, 50 is 278hp to 304hp, 55 423hp to 449hp, 60 is 423hp to 449hp and 70 is 529hp and above. Some engines do not fit in with this badging, as the power output is not listed... confused? Hope not, and to make it slightly more confusing, some data from some sources is in PS, not HP! The 50 286ps is a lovely smooth engine and coupled to the 8-speed Tiptronic is a dream 20 THE MARKET PLACE
to drive, so smooth and quiet. The Q8 also has a mild Hybrid system (MHEV) which is 48v technology, and when charged it will power the car for a short distance on electric power only, as the engine is automatically switched off which saves fuel and reduces emissions. This system works effortlessly, and you really have no idea if you are on diesel or electric power. The standard equipment level is very high, there seems to be everything you need in a car, and more besides. During the time we drove the car it was difficult to try and test everything on offer in the cockpit as it is full of goodies. Everything is so clever and easy to use and operate. Audi seem to understand what drivers need, they do not over complicate anything. There are hardly any buttons on the dash as everything is operated by touch screen and is very intuitive. The interior is very luxurious and when you sit in the Q8 you really feel as though you are in a very expensive and prestigious executive saloon, or SUV. Leg, head and shoulder room is more than adequate for
five adults and there are not many cars that you would be happy travelling with four other adults, but in the Q8 you could go many a mile, and still be comfortable. But the best place in the car is the drivers seat, though I wouldn’t mind being front seat passenger for some considerable distance. The materials used, the fit and finish are all up to a very high standard, and if anything I would say even higher than any previous Audi. It really is superb, a great place to sit. The Q8 of course has the quattro four-wheel drive system as standard on all models, which is designed for smooth, rapid, allweather performance, and has a self-locking centre differential. Prices for the Q8 start from £65,040 OTR in the UK for a 50 TDI S line. I could go on forever about how good the Q8 is but to sum up, it is the top of the Q range, an elegant five-seat luxury SUV with Coupe styling, with those huge shoulders and frameless side windows, which all add up to a very desirable, great looking, and very useable car… but not that easy to park…

Local News Local News Local News Local News Four arrested for 18 robberies in the Axarquia area The Guardia Civil have confirmed that they arrested 4 people at the end of October for their involvement in 18 different robberies in rural areas of Torrox, Nerja and Frigiliana. After complaints from the households affected the Guardia Civil began an investigation called "Cortijeros" which ended with the arrest of the leaders of the plot. Two people of Romanian nationality that have previous history with the police were located.
road was closed due to a massive fall of rocks and earth. The clean up took place during the week of 22nd November and the road was reopened to traffic on that day. However, almost 50 school children could not attend classes. Consideration is being given to installing protective grills that will help to prevent these rock slides in the future.
Nerja is a tourist leader in the Costa del Sol
For the third time since 2004, the N340 between Nerja and Torrox has been cut off due to rocks falling from the cliff as a result of heavy rain. This time the culprit was a giant rock weighing more than five tonnes that fell near the beach of Calaceite. Fortunately the rockfall, which took place at 4pm on the 20th November, did not cause any personal or material damage, which is surprising as the road is usually quite busy.
The Tourism Department of the Council of Nerja are pleased to announce that they are leaders in the Malaga region, thanks to the income from hotel rooms after this season. According to the latest data published by the Institute of Statistics and Cartography of Andalusia, prepared from the operation of the Hotel Occupancy Survey of the INE (Institute of National Statistics) Nerja is the leader of this category.
The Local Police and Guardia Civil took charge and the rock was removed in the late afternoon with the help of heavy machinery, including a hydraulic hammer which was used to be break the rock into more than 25 cubic metres of stone.
Maintenence technicians authorised the reopening of the A7206 road at kilometre 10.7 between Algarrobo and Sayalonga at the end of last month. The 22 THE MARKET PLACE
The reservoirs in the Malaga province, in particular those in the Guadalhorce area, have benefitted immensely from recent rainfall, tripling their reserves compared to last year. The differences compared to last year in terms of the water levels in the Malaga province are vast. The start of the Autumn season could not have been better for the Malaga marshes, which have managed to leave behind the threat of drought, thanks to the recent downpours. Twelve months ago the reservoirs were barely 30% full, now they are above 70%, which secures water for around 4 years.
Nerja promoted at the World Travel Market 2018 in London
The road is expected to be closed for a month because the security mesh on the hillside was damaged. With more rain forecast there could also be more landslides ahead.
Torrox cleaning staff call for improvements
There have been many actions carried out by the Local Council Tourism Department to promote brand "Nerja". Promotion and visibility through fairs, such as FITUR or the recent World Travel Market in London and participation in all the traditional fairs to increase interest in Nerja.

Falling 5 tonne rock closes the N340 between Nerja and Torrox
Through more investigations it was found that the perpetrators travelled by public transport to the locations and took refuge in abandoned houses, where they waited for nightfall to approach other houses in which to commit robberies. They took appliances that would transport easily. By monitoring events the Guardia Civil were able to detain the other two individuals who were also Romanian, and together with their associates were placed at the disposal of the authorities.
UGT have denounced the agreement that was previously made, and expired in 2015. They also criticize the lack of information about future plans, because the service may be municipilised in May 2019.
Half of the sixty workers from Livitemsa in Torrox protested in November, demanding a salary increase of 6% and also asking for at least two days of rest per week. The unions CC OO and
The Mayor of Nerja Rosa Arrabal visted London to attend the 39th World Travel Market in November to promote the destination of Nerja to British Tourists. The World Travel Market is one of the most important events in the tourist industry, at which thousands of businesses and professionals attend. The fair is a strategic showcase for tourism and one of the main economic drivers which shows the many diverse aspects of Nerja; the different coves and beaches, culture, lesuire and sports activities, nature and gastronomy among others.

Later that day we will be unveiling a sculpture by one of our Members at the Cultural Centre, Calle Granada at 5.15pm. This presentation is to recognise the 25
years of collaboration with the Ayuntamiento de Nerja and its Education & Culture Department. The evening lecture was chosen to compliment our 25 years here in the Axarquia with the topic of history of art, power & passion of Al-Andalus to remind us of our heritage here. Then the Anniversary Day is being rounded off with a Dinner and Music at the Parador Hotel with guests from the UK, “Head Office in London”, the Area Chairman and other Arts Societies along the coast.
Tuesday December 11th, 6:00pm in the Cultural Centre, Calle Granada, Nerja Tickets only available on the night from 5.00pm
SPAIN: A HISTORY OF ART, POWER AND PASSION A MEMORY OF AL-ANDALUS A fully illustrated Lecture in English by Anne Haworth BA (Hons) Sponsored by The Anniversary Friend of The Arts Society Nerja Visitors are most welcome E10 In 711 AD, Spain was conquered by Moorish armies from North Africa who named this country Al-Andalus. A magnificent golden age of building and culture flourished during subsequent centuries. The lecture focuses on the architectural, horticultural and artisanal legacy of Islamic Spain with a tour of the most important buildings of Andalusia including Córdoba's hauntingly beautiful Mezquita, Seville's memorable Alcazar and Giralda Tower and the exquisite Alhambra Palace in Granada. Water was an essential component of the Islamic garden and fountains still dazzle in the beautiful Generalife garden adjacent to the Alhambra whilst providing a mirror-like calm in the depths of the water mine in Ronda's Casa del Rey Moro. Many luxury crafts flourished in Moorish Spain including fine silk-weaving at Almería, ivory-carving in medieval Córdoba alongside paper-making, metal-working and pottery. Hispano-Moresque ceramic lustre-wares made in 15th Century Málaga and Valencia were exported as far as England and had an important role in the development of
Italian Renaissance maiolica. As Muslim power waned during the Reconquista followed by the power of the Habsburg monarchs, elements of Moorish architectural, musical and aesthetic heritage survived and synthesised with the new Christian culture. The lecture concludes with the passion for the art of Andalusia shown by Victorian artists including Owen Jones and William de Morgan and later writers and artists such as Gerald Brennan and Dora Carrington.

Health, Body & Soul Love your life more with advice on how to lead a healthy lifestyle
Is everybody about to start inhaling their wellness?
A simple trick to help you fall asleep in 2 minutes
Oh sleep. It seems as though you’re the biggest troublemaker of the moment. We all know we need you for at least eight hours each night. There are those that can doze off as soon as their head hits the pillow, while others will lie in bed for hours tossing and turning until the early hours of the morning. But never fear if you’re the latter, the American Army has revealed the ultimate trick they use to get to sleep in two minutes flat. Published in Lloyd Bud Winter’s ‘Relax and Win: Championship Performance’, the trick has a guaranteed success rate of 96 per cent. To nail the trick, you firstly need to relax your mind and body, and follow these four steps: 1. Relax the muscles in your face, including the jaw, tongue and those around the eyes 2. Let your shoulders drop, and relax both sides of the upper and lower arms 3. Breathe out, keeping the chest relaxed 4. Relax both the upper and lower parts of your legs Once completed you need to visualise one of two scenarios: 1. Lying in a canoe on a calm lake with nothing except blue skies around you; or 2. Being wrapped in a black velvet hammock in a dark room. The last step involves you actually speaking (weird, but it’s all part of the process): Slowly repeat the words “don’t think” for approximately 10 seconds. And... a few seconds later you’ll find yourself off with the fairies… well, fingers crossed!

Most people will be familiar with the term 'vaping' by now, but never has there been a more 2018-ified wellness phrase than “vaping your vitamins” Vaping, i.e smoking nicotine-infused e-cigarettes that come in a variety of flavours, has exploded in popularity in recent years, most noticeably among millennials. This is partly due to the fact that, despite it still being highly addictive, scientists generally agree vaping is technically better for you than smoking regular cigarettes. But now, wellness companies are jumping on the bandwagon, seeking to capitalise on the trend taking over the social scene by selling vaporisers that let you inhale vitamins, essential oils and herbal supplements. The supposedly goodfor-you spin on
vaping involves real e-cigs containing vitaminenhanced vapour, such as D and B12 instead of nicotine. One company markets its Vitamin B12 vaporiser as containing “10 times the amount found in a typical B-12 shot”. VitaStick, which was one of the first “healthy vapes” to hit the growing US market, claims to mist a cocktail of Vitamin A, B2, B6, B12, C, D, E and CoQ10. A more recent brand, breathe, says it’s “e-juice” contains B12, vegetable glycerin, deionised water and organic fruit flavour extract. VitaCig’s Kama Sutra claims to incorporate a “proprietary blend of fruit extracts, plants, and amino acids, commonly used to encourage sexual arousal.” Does this mean wellness is now just an inhale (or two) away? Health claims are thin, given e-cigarettes have only been around for a hot second compared to combustible cigarettes. Scientists say the research used by the vaping industry to back up health claims is not up to date. These products might be completely safe, but they might not be. We know literally nothing about the safety or efficacy of inhaling vitamins. The American Cancer Society also says the purported health claims may very well hold up, however they have not been adequately studied. Simply put, how well the lungs actually do take in vitamins is still up for debate.
The most unexpected causes of Diabetes While some risk factors, such as obesity, unhealthy eating, a sedentary lifestyle and a family history of the condition, are well known, there are a number of other factors that can contribute to type 2 diabetes but are much less well known.
Diabetes affects how your body regulates blood sugar (glucose). In healthy people, insulin – a hormone created by beta cells in the pancreas – converts glucose into energy. Without that process, glucose builds up, which can lead to serious health complications.
1. Working long hours 2. Eating soybean oil 3. Poor air quality 4. Being depressed THE BOTTOM LINE Focus on the risk factors for diabetes you can change. Sometimes, as an individual, we can’t control the quality of the air or the food available to us, but being aware of the risks to our health help us to make informed decisions.

Almijara Bowls Summer League Finals At the end of October the Almijara Bowls Club held a play-off final to determine the winner of the Summer League. This was the second year the club had run this event which was well supported with two divisions of 12 players competing for the trophy. Each competitor had to play 10 4 wood singles matches and many of the games were very close. Congratulations to Vanessa Evans and David Trippas for winning their respective divisions; David went on to become the Summer Singles League Champion following a close match against Vanessa. The Committee are very grateful to Nigel Locke for organising the league and also keeping the records up to date on a weekly basis.

The music starts mellow (whilst people are eating), gradually picking up the tempo and culminating with the dance set including standards like Van Morrison’s “Brown Eyed Girl”, REM’s “Losing My Religion” and The Mavericks’ “Dance the Night Away”. Manish's Zodiac predictions - December Manish Kumar Arora, K.P. Astrologer, Numerologist, Tarot Card Reader & Vastu Consultant Facebook: manishastroconsultant email: manish@manishastrologer.com
Aries ( 21 March – 19 April )
You may want to rule the roost now, and this can be successful as long as you’re a gentle leader. You’ll do best if you pursue your goals in a structured or organized manner. You are finding new ways to get along with others, and people are valuing your services. This is a good time to get your feelings out into the open.
Taurus ( 20 April – 20 May )
You’re at your best when you work with someone towards a common goal. The best way to use this energy to your advantage is to allow others to inspire and motivate you. Team up and take action so that excess energy is turned outwards. Sharing your feelings or intimate matters can be fun and rewarding. This is a time of love, family travels and joint holiday with loved ones.
Gemini ( 21 May – 20 June)
A major focus this month is your relationships, companionability, and intimacy. Even so, it’s one of your more ambitious months of the year. You often fare better when the focus is on your projects, loved ones, and work. There is also a pleasant feeling of moving forward, slowly but surely, this month. You are likely to end this month with a renewed feeling of confidence in your career direction.
Cancer ( 21 June – 22 July )
Your appeal is high, and people thoroughly enjoy your art, craft, or ideas. It’s a natural time for you to reflect and move a little more slowly than usual. This allows you to catch up emotionally with recent events and circumstances. There can be a tendency for you or a partner to be touchy or for arguments to emerge seemingly out of nowhere.
Leo ( 23 July – 22 August )
You tend to want to set your own pace and goals, and you thrive on the small challenges you create for yourself now. You have an easier time putting something behind you now. The second half of the month in personal relationships will have more smooth and steady flow - there will be peace in the family and spousal relationships will witness the long-awaited passion and romance.
Virgo ( 23 August – 22 September )
Ownership, sharing, power, and money matters can be at the root of challenges or the need to make changes becomes evident. You need to accept that change is inevitable and understand that being proactive about it is in your best interests. There can also be bigger emotions felt at home than elsewhere – tempers may be prominent. The trick is to avoid impatience and impulsiveness. 42 THE MARKET PLACE
Libra ( 23 September – 22 October )
Romance and travel are favoured in December, although both are better after mid-month. Your romantic life continues to stimulate and challenge you, and although part of you might long for a more settled and stable situation, it’s never dull. The month will be more loyal, have a smooth flow, and most miraculously smooth out any roughness in a relationship and extinguish any conflict.
Scorpio ( 23 October – 21 November )
It’s a time for seeing yourself better through relationships with others and the world as a whole. Changes of plans can lead to new discoveries, perspectives, and insight that truly improve your life, so don’t dig in your heels too much. This is also a time when you’re not particularly content with simply dreaming, wishing, and hoping for better circumstances.
Sagittarius ( 22 November -21 December )
This month points to a more private period for your love life or affections. It can also point to benefits to working behind the scenes or special enjoyment of solitude and periods for extra rest and healing. The last week of the month finds you seeking out predictability, comfort and security, launching one of the best periods of the year for money matters.
Capricorn ( 22 December – 19 January )
You’re likely to feel in an exceptionally generous and possibly philosophical mood. This is an opportunity period for finances, gifts, bonuses, family relationships, recognition for your work or natural talents, and stellar money-making or project ideas with long-term appeal and profitability. This is a beautiful time for learning or expanding a project, as well as activities related to promotion, publishing, education, communications, the law, and travel.
Aquarius ( 20 January – 18 February )
Your ambitions are stimulated. While you have a strong sense of the rules, you are at your best when employing strategies. Negotiations should go very well. You might benefit from keeping someone’s confidence or you may receive recognition for work you’ve done in the past. Healing activities are in focus. New ideas flow well. This can also be an almost magical time for financial and business matters.
Pisces ( 19 February – 20 March )
This month finds you seeking out predictability, comfort, and security for money matters. A good idea can blossom now. You are capable of quite a bit of work if you can foresee an improved financial position or a more secure state of being. This period could also stir up old financial or relationship problems. The tendency now is to react quickly, but you might want to get in touch with your heart’s desire before taking action.
We would like to wish all our customers and friends a Merry Christmas & a Happy, Healthy 2019

Micronutrients: Selenium Essential to many of the body’s regulatory and metabolic functions, selenium is part of at least 25 proteins called selenoproteins, many of which are oxidant defense enzymes. Roles in Health Selenium is involved in reproduction, metabolism, thyroid function, DNA production and protection from oxidative damage and infection. Studies have associated low levels with increased risk for cancer, cardiovascular disease, cognitive decline and thyroid disease. Low dietary consumption of selenium may be associated with obesity. Selenium’s antioxidant properties and its effect on DNA repair and the endocrine system may play a role in the prevention of certain cancers. However, the relationship between selenium and cancer is debated worldwide. In 2003, a qualified health claim for reduction of certain cancers was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for dietary supplements containing selenium. A 2016 meta-analysis suggested high selenium exposure through dietary sources may have varying effects on cancer prevention. A 2006 meta-analysis showed high selenium concentrations were associated with a reduction in coronary heart disease risk. Some experts recommend selenium supplements for patients with or at risk for coronary heart disease and for those undergoing cardiac surgery.
Food sources* mcg/serving 1 ounce Brazil nuts - 544 3 ounces cooked yellowfin tuna - 92 3 ounces roasted ham - 42 1 cup cooked egg noodles - 38 3 ounces cooked beef liver - 28 1 cup 1% cottage cheese - 20 1 large cooked egg - 15 *All foods listed here are rated “excellent” sources.
Since aging is characterised by loss of muscle mass and selenium plays a key role in muscle function, reduced serum selenium levels may be associated with age-related decline in brain function. Studies indicate supplementation may offer benefits only to those whose selenium consumption already is inadequate, and emerging research suggests genetic factors may affect how people respond to supplementation.
Current Recommendations The Institute of Medicine uses Adequate Intake, or AI, for infants due to insufficient evidence to develop a Recommended Dietary Allowance. The daily AI is 15 micrograms for infants 0 to 6 months and 20 micrograms for infants 7 to 12 months. The RDA is 20 micrograms for children ages 1 to 3, 30 micrograms for ages 4 to 8, 40 micrograms for ages 9 to 13, and 55 micrograms for ages 14 and older. Pregnant and lactating women require 60 micrograms and 70 micrograms, respectively. Daily Tolerable Upper Intake Levels are 45 micrograms for infants 0 to 6 months, 60 micrograms for infants 7 to 12 months, 90 micrograms for children 1 to 3 years, 150 micrograms for ages 4 to 8, 280 micrograms for ages 9 to 13, and 400 micrograms for ages 14 and older.
Sources of Selenium
Selenium is found naturally in many foods. However, the amount depends on the selenium concentration of soil and water. Immune function may be boosted with increased selenium levels, which Most people should get enough selenium from their diet, primarily can help protect against infectious from grains, meat, poultry, fish and diseases caused by viruses such as eggs. HIV, influenza and hepatitis C. 44 THE MARKET PLACE
Selenium is available as a supplement and in multivitamins in the highly absorbable form of selenomethionine.
Signs of Deficiency Rare in the Western world but estimated to effect 1 billion people worldwide, selenium deficiency is measured by concentration in serum and plasma. Deficiency may increase the risk of thyroid disease and can cause Keshan disease (cardiomyopathy), Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, male infertility and possibly Kashin-Beck, a type of osteoarthritis.
Populations at Risk Diarrhea, malabsorption and poor intake by people with HIV can lead to deficiency. Kidney dialysis also increases deficiency risk. Selenium may interact with medications such as Cisplatin, a chemotherapy drug that can lower selenium levels.
Toxicity Selenium toxicity is uncommon in the Western world. Consuming excess selenium can cause symptoms such as garlic breath, nausea, diarrhea and skin rash. Hair and nail loss are common signs of chronic overconsumption. Dangerously high intakes can cause kidney failure, heart attack and heart failure.
Bottom Line Selenium is important in many aspects of health and may boost the immune system, slow mental decline and reduce risk of some diseases, but more research is needed to confirm this.

C.A.S. (Costa Animal Society) CAS HOLIDAY GREETINGS As the year comes to an end, the Costa Animal Society (CAS) would like to express our gratitude to all of our family, friends and volunteers who have made it possible for us to continue doing the best we can for all the animals in need in Nerja and its near environs. From business sponsors to shop volunteers, from private kennels to fosterers, and especially to the work of our veterinarian partners, thank you. From those who take care of the paperwork enabling us to send wonderful dogs to our sister charities in Northern Europe and Scandinavia, to the volunteers who drive them to the airport and to those who fly with them, muchisimas gracias! And, especially a huge thank you to our friends in the media who very generously provide their valuable time and space pro bono helping us to get the word out on the urgent and serious issue of animal welfare. Your support is very much appreciated. From all of us at CAS, we wish you happy holidays and all the best in the coming year. Salud!
HAPPY TALES The Costa Animal Society (CAS) is pleased to say that last month’s write-up of Nina’s story directly resulted in her finding a second home with a lovely retired English couple. The couple read about how Nina had been returned to CAS as her owner had to move back to the UK for medical treatment.
NINA 48 THE MARKET PLACE
Before Nina’s second adoption, the prospective owners were made aware of Nina’s attachment issues and her need for a constant companion. The couple have another female Podenco and now Nina has settled in nicely with her new sister Bella. Well done Les and Mae!
SIMBA any of the lovely rescue dogs and cats who are up for adoption please feel free to call Kurt or Laura on 95 252 1426. More information can also be found at the Costa Animal Society’s website https:// casnerja.webs.com or via Facebook at /casnerja
OPHELIA Ophelia is a small one-totwo year old female Podenco who was rescued from living rough in the campo by a kind-hearted English lady. In a joint effort between the Costa Animal Society (CAS) and APA, the other animal charity in Nerja, Ophelia was taken to the vet for evaluation and vaccinations. It was determined that the dog was a bit undernourished so she was housed in kennels by CAS where she was well-fed and pampered. After a month she was spayed and APA then arranged for Ophelia to go to a foster home in Germany. She left via ground transport earlier this month.
SCRUFFS Despite being rained out on the scheduled day, the Costa Animal Society’s annual dog show Scruffs was held the following Sunday beneath sunny skies. With 15 categories to enter, by the end of the day there were many proud dogs and handlers bedecked with colourful rosettes and sporting big smiles.
READY FOR ADOPTION Simba has reached his first birthday and to mark this milestone the Costa Animal Society (CAS) had him sterilized as are all CAS dogs and cats. Simba has a friendly outgoing personality and with maturity plus lower hormone levels and proper training he will make a lovely pet. He really enjoys being around people and gets along well with other dogs so if you are looking for a Lab cross come and visit him in kennels. If you could provide Simba or any of the other CAS animals a foster or permanent home, or if you would like to meet
The Costa Animal Society (CAS) focuses much of its efforts on helping to control the homeless cat population in Nerja. CAS is regularly called upon to assist stray cats which may require veterinary care such as sterilisation, evaluation and medication for infections or illnesses and/or the treatment of wounds. As always, CAS is in need of fosterers for kittens, especially, but not only, those that need bottle-feeding. Also, we do have several adult cats needing homes or foster homes. All of these cats are fully house-trained, neutered, and vaccinated. For more information on cats available for adoption see the Costa Animal Society’s website https://casnerja. webs.com, also Facebook at / casnerja and /east of malaga kittens and cats.
CAS SHOP NEWS It’s tempting to write that in 2018 the Costa Animal Society (CAS) shop went from strength to strength, but my word what a tired cliché, however true. So, at the end of the day, let it be known that shop manager May and her crack staff have the shop purring along like a fat cat in a warm lap. Donations are quickly processed, well-displayed and priced to move. You’ll want to sharpen your elbows before entering the fray, and please no hanky-panky in the changing room. The CAS shop is located next door to the Good Stuff Café in Nerja at No. 2 Calle Castilla Perez. Our opening hours are Monday to Saturday from 10.00am until 2.00pm and the telephone number is 643 212 409.
CAN YOU HELP CAS? CAS would like to express our sincere gratitude to all of the business and private sponsors whose generosity helped to raise much needed funds in aid of our homeless canine and feline friends. A special thank you goes out to Jacky of the Nerja Foreign Residents Department for all of her hard work and support.
The Costa Animal Society (CAS) is always in need of more volunteer helpers in a number of areas so if you have spare time to fill, please make contact! In particular, we are currently seeking someone or ones who can help with fundraising and social media promotion. continued on page 50

TAIL TORROX As we come to the end of the year, maybe it's time for some reflections on the past twelve months, some good some not so. Probably the best is that Tail is still progressing, we have become more efficient around the Refuge thanks mostly to Kayleigh's control of the paperwork; we are managing to rehome more dogs than some five years ago we would ever have thought possible; although the various vet's bills are still our most expensive outgoing we are undertaking journeys further afield for particular specialist care; our spring and autumn dog shows continue to enlarge and improve; and best of all, our supporters are forever doing just that – they can always be guaranteed to rally round, whether it be to help or finance a particular project. Although it has still not materialised we were more than chuffed when, after years of talking to various administrations in the Town Hall, the present Mayor put a cash sum into the Estimates to help Tail undertake a neutering campaign. It was more a matter of being thrilled that this was a sign of acceptance that such a plan should happen than the actual cash – however much that is needed. Tail is associated with ADA, an umbrella environmental organisation based in Velez Malaga, who help and disseminate information on the legal side for charities. It is a shame that some well publicised animal charities do not participate, indeed one treats the whole exercise as if it is a competition to be won, whilst Tail prefers to help and accept help. We cannot overcome the abandonment and abuse of dogs all on our own. To all our readers, supporters and volunteers we pledge to keep going and keep doing what is in the best interest of Tail which is to do our very best to care for, socialise with, and find a loving family for each dog that we manage to rescue, in this we can count on our principle vet, Dr Peter Russev, who has always done sterling work on our behalf. Sadly we shall be losing our Finnish couple Pasi & Minna Rosendahl shortly after the New Year. They have been continuously with us for the past year Passi putting in magnificent work around the kennels and Minni undertaking Training. Honestly guys, what attraction does Finland have that Torrox doesn't?
A very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all our volunteers and supporters.

The bay enjoys shelter from west winds creating mostly crystal-clear waters, and is a popular location for water sports & paragliding. There are numerous beach bars and restaurants serving specialities of the region, including tropical salads, fresh fish or paella. The Marina del Este near La Herradura is tucked betwen Punta de la Mona to the west and Cotobro to the east. It boasts a beautiful port, elegantly designed to incorporate select shops, art galleries, bars and restaurants. This small strip of coast also claims to be the best place to dive between Almeria and Gibraltar, and is home to one of the areas leading diving schools.

Nerja
was once a sleepy fishing village but now the town has a population of over 21,000. The Balcón de Europa is a magnificent promenade that was made famous by King Alfonso XII , who’s statue now takes pride of place at the far end. Close by is the 17th century Church of El Salvador, and the beautiful gardens of Capistrano Playa. There are many beaches to be found either side and in front of the town, including Burriana with its numerous cafés and restaurants. Here too, you can take advantage of the water sports on offer, including water skiing, scuba diving and sailing. Just outside Nerja on the coast road towards Maro is a very impressive aquaduct which used to supply the local sugar factory.

Torre del Mar
is just 30 minutes from Malaga, and is the beach resort of Velez Málaga. Its population of 21,000 grows between June and September to 150,000. The towns attractions have expanded over the last few years to cope with the demand, and now the four kilometres of beach have been enhanced by an impressive promenade, which stretches all the way to Caleta de Vélez, a port providing over 200 berths and offering sailing and water sports. Throughout the summer, there are many Chiringuitos on the beach, serving fresh barbequed fish and ice cold beers. In 2002, Paseo de Larios was pedestrianized, and is now a tranquil promenade, with plenty of pavement cafés and restaurants. At the seafront end of Larios is a line of bars and discos which continue throughout the night on Fridays and Saturdays. The history of Torre is uncertain, but it is thought that it might have been part of an ancient Greek settlement, known as Mainake, which was destroyed by the Carthaginians. Tombs of the Carthaginians were found at the mouth of the river Velez. More recently, it was a small fishing village until major development began in the 1970’s.

Lake Viñuela
is a 15 minute drive from the N340 Autovia, leaving at the junction for Velez Malaga. Head inland along the A356; this direction also leads to numerous inland white villages. The first turning on our map is to Benamocarra, which is sign posted to the right after the last roundabout into Velez Malaga. This road will take you back over the main road and then also on to Iznate, and divides to take you to Almachar, El Borge and Cutar. The second turning off the A356 is on the right (after the Repsol garage) to Trapiche. Continue on the A356, and immediately you will see another junction on the left, sign posted to Benamargosa, Triana, Comares and Cutar. This road will also take you as far as Rio Gordo (for a scenic drive). There is a popular Spanish bar on the corner of this junction called El Cruz. Back on the A356, continue on and you will pass another junction on the right, to Canillas de Aceituno, and finally you will see Lake Vinuela in front of you. Turn right before the lake for Puente de Don Manuel, Alcaucin, Viñuela and Periana; carry straight on for Los Romanes, Rio Gordo and Colmenar.

Frigiliana
encompass 39.74 sq km within which live just over 3,000 people year round. Frigiliana is a popular tourist destination, and because there are many holiday homes here, the population triples during the summer months. The history of Frigiliana dates from prehistoric times. The village has been inhabited by numerous civilisations from the Phoenicians and Romans to the Arabs, who had the greatest impact on the town’s development. During the Christian reconquest, Frigiliana was the site of numerous battles culminating in the famous battle of the Rock of Frigiliana in 1569 which ended in the complete expulsion of the Moorish people. One can learn the history of this struggle by walking through the streets of the historic section where there are a series of twelve ceramic plaques posted about which explain the entire story.
