2015 - A WIN WIN year for holidaymakers and owners! New legislation will improve facilities for holidaymakers and improve occupancy for owners. A BIG THANK YOU...... This seems to be an appropriate opportunity to thank all the many owners who have placed their trust and confidence in Teamstar Holiday Rentals. I would also like to thank all those holiday makers who are about to sample our service for either the first or the fifteenth time. Yes that’s right the fifteenth time! Once again, as I write this editorial it is against the backdrop of a hectic booking season that actually started last summer, it never fails to amaze me just how many holidaymakers either rebook before they leave or immediately after returning home, we must be doing something right! All the indications point to another strong year ahead. I am mindful that Market Place Magazine is often left and hopefully read in our holiday properties and with luck it will be as relevant to a holidaymaker or owner reading this in February as it might to someone reading it in December – not an easy task. Do remember to pick up a copy our latest Team brochure which contains just a small selection of properties. To see our entire portfolio please see teamstarholidayrentals.com 2014 WHAT OF THE SUCCESSES? Before looking forward I thought I should share with you the successes and challenges of 2014. Well, top of the list is that according to our online customer questionnaire a massive 95% of holiday makers “Would book with Teamstar again”.

YES 95%

NO 5%

Would you book with Teamstar Holiday Rentals again? One of the most profound aspects of 2014 is the knowledge that our holidaymakers have of Nerja, their intimate knowledge of the geography of the town is as good as ours! Not surprising when you consider Nerja is small and enjoyed by so many, many of whom return year after year. The other interesting point is that our strategy to encourage our owners to constantly review and invest in the quality of furnishings, fixtures, fittings and appliances has proven to be most successful. Understandably holiday makers want to enjoy attractive, quality and reliable fixtures, fittings and 6 THE MARKET PLACE

facilities that work well and add to the overall enjoyment of their holiday. In short better properties receive better bookings. In terms of communicating our special offers we will continue to newsletter holidaymakers and promote them via facebook, like us on facebookTSR

WHAT OF THE CHALLENGES? Thankfully Nerja´s townhall continues to improve the infrastructure of the town whether this be building additional accommodation, much needed car parks, supermarkets or more roundabouts! However the challenge for us is that the work can be noisy, disruptive and often causes problems with the provision of water and electricity supply. We are seldom informed of where and when the work starts or how long it might take, as a result we can´t always notify our holidaymakers in advance and this can severely impact holiday enjoyment. Nevertheless we will continue to do our best to communicate municipal works as far in advance as we are informed. Last year some 70% of holiday makers who booked with us found our reservation service extremely responsive and just under 80% found our pre travel information very clear. I am delighted to say that we have managed to improve slightly on both these points. Nevertheless in this business, if you stay still you go backwards and so we are looking to redesign our web site to make it more user friendly including our continued commitment to ensure all our properties can be seen via a ‘Virtual tour’, there are now only a handful of properties still waiting and these will be completed early 2015.

Since writing the editorial for our last year´s brochure, much is likely to change in terms of legislation overseeing the short term holiday rental market in Spain. The new law will impact both property owners and holidaymakers and I believe both for the better. I recall writing about the challenges we face in convincing and providing evidence to property owners the value of constantly upgrading the quality of accommodation in return for higher occupancy. Earlier this year we learned that the Junta of Andalucia ( the governing body for the region ) would announce changes in the way holiday rentals will be required to operate. They have now issued their findings and we can expect the new legislation to be in force in early 2015. It will take time to be introduced and will likely increase the overall holiday cost but at the same time improve and make mandatory a range of facilities hitherto optional.

Here´s to a great 2015! Anke Werner Managing Director, Teamstar Holiday Rentals.

As a result we are already looking at ways the new legislation can act in the best interests of our holiday makers and rental property owners. I am delighted to say

Tips for renting out your property Market Situation If during 2014 you have not been able to rent a house out, you may be doing something wrong! You need to assess your own market situation based on the area you live in, the competition in the area, and the state of the house that you are trying to rent. By looking at these parameters you set a rent that meets supply and demand and that will create interest in the property. Capitalize the Property For those who have not opted to rent out a property yet. There is no point waiting around trying to sell or selling at a low price. Renting can be a profitable business and returns can be made. Legality All contracts must be governed by the Law on Urban Leases and in them the rights and obligations of the parties must appear. Hire a Professional Sometimes it can be too time consuming to try and lease your own property but help is always at hand. Hire a professional who will help fix the price, advertise the property and find a tenant. Finding a good Tenant This can be the difficult part, and much of the time it is more luck than management. Conducting a mini interview of the potential tenants can help, setting out your expectations and also their expectations.

A genuine Axarquia secret - Cútar - Part 1 Nobody drops in on Cútar. You don’t come here unless you have decided to. It sits below the curve of a ribbon of road that only a few decades ago was a donkey track.

T

he villagers, who used to walk along the river bed to the local town, now drive or walk - at some hazard to themselves - in groups along a road that links five white villages all in a ring. As you reach the curving brow of a hill, Cútar suddenly arises like a bright jewel, a tumbling honeycomb of whitewashed houses lit up by the sun. The village stands on a bluff of rock cut on one side by the river Cave and on the other by the river Cútar. It´s built between two spring lines producing sixteen water sources including one at the top of the village, which was called “hisn aqut” or “pointed castle” where the church now is, and another at the bottom of the village called “Cautzar” that gives the village its name, meaning “The Fountain of Paradise”. According to 16th century documents, this was also known as the "aina alcaharia", which means "The Fountain of the Farmhouse." This is a famous water source, being a perfectly preserved Arab well, the only one of its kind in the region. Elderly villagers can remember as children carrying water home on their heads from the spring. This was before the age of plumbers. The silence here is almost palpable. There is no ambient traffic noise, and two old men at work on opposite sides of the valley can converse without raising their voices.

12 THE MARKET PLACE

It is January as I write. Morning mist and smoke rising from winter bonfires lay a haze over the landscape, now many shades of green. This exotic sub-tropical climate has an average temperature of 17 degrees and about 3000 hours of sunshine per year. Snow is rare - though visible now on the mountain tops - so it’s possible to grow avocado, mango, papaya, passion fruit and custard apple here as the water never freezes.

History The name Cútar denotes a region as well as a village. Look across the valley and you can see its history - a cycle of prosperity and destitution etched into the landscape. In the distance, that great bite out of the mountain skyline is the Zafarraya pass, the route of migrants and invaders from Neolithic man to Bonaparte’s armies, the route south for invading moors and Christians, the route north for Franco’s fascist rebels. In the middle distance is the Peña de Hierro, a great rock thrusting into the skyline - in antiquity a massive geological fort. There is evidence of prehistoric settlement here. On the ancient route south through the pass towards the sea, prosperous trading communities grew with enough surplus resources to build a substantial necropolis (a city of the dead). Coins and ceramics from both the Romans and the Christian Goths that succeeded them have also been discovered here. The age of the Berber continued on page 14

THE MARKET PLACE 13

Arabs who ruled this region from the eighth to the fifteenth centuries, was the golden age for Cútar and for the whole of Andalucía, a beacon of light in a Europe benighted by the superstition and cruelty of medieval Christianity. Muslim Arabs brought sophisticated agriculture and irrigation, and with it the muscatel grape, orange, lemon and pomegranate. They brought all the wisdom of the classical age – its mathematics, architecture, astronomy, medicine and rational philosophy previously and later suppressed by Christians as “pagan”. It also laid the foundations of the flourishing town of Cútar by building a large farmhouse protected by a fort, which quickly grew into a thriving Muslim community with its own Mosque. The houses of all of the villages were lime washed by law to prevent disease. Thus “pueblos blancos” - white villages were created. At this time Cútar, with Almáchar, El Borge and Moclinejo, was part of the “Tahá de Comares”. Tahá is an Arabic word meaning “administrative district” of Comares, being overlooked by that village where the army was based. During the Muslim period, Cútar was much bigger than it is now. It enjoyed great economic prosperity for two products that are still harvested and continue to enjoy international fame. The first is the olive, which yields the highly prized “Verdiales” oil, smooth, green and delicious. The second is the muscatel grape, valuable fresh or dried as raisins. For centuries it was an ingredient in the famous Málaga sweet wines, which, unlike table wines could withstand long sea voyages in barrels without spoiling. Although this period was one of great prosperity in which Muslims, Jews and Christians lived together in relative harmony, it was not without wars and conflict. The Moorish castle at Cútar was destroyed by Rahman III to suppress the revolt of Ibn Hafsun. At the very end of the protracted struggle for dominance of the region between Moors and Christians, Cútar was the site of the Battle of the Axarquia. In March 1483 at Cútar, El 14 THE MARKET PLACE

Zagal's Moorish army led by Muley Hacen fell upon and slaughtered troops from Castile led by the Marquis of Cadiz, who was on his way to conquer Málaga. Granada eventually fell to the Christians, Ferdinand and Isabella, in 1492. Muslims had a stark choice: expulsion or conversion to Christianity. Those who stayed were known as “Moriscos” and were harassed and persecuted by the inquisition. Cútar became impoverished and depopulated. By 1494 there were only 120 inhabitants. Christopher Columbus sailed in 1492 and it is said that his ship passed those of expelled Moors and Jews. He was trying to become the first Christian to replace the Muslim spice traders. He failed to sail east, but his discoveries yielded the potato and sweet potato, the avocado, the sweet pepper, and the hot pepper that was a temporary substitute for black peppercorns. He also discovered chocolate, mixed for the first time by the Spaniards with sugar to create an elixir that they kept secret for a hundred years. All this added to the richness of regional cuisine. For their part the Spanish Inquisition contributed a new eating experience designed to exclude Jews and Muslims forever when they established grants for pig rearing. The struggle was not over. The year 1569 saw a general revolt against Christian authority by the Moriscos of Almáchar, Cútar, Benamargosa, Competa, Sedella, Daimalos and other villages in the Axarquia. The rebels made their final stand at El Peñon de Frigiliana, where they were finally defeated by the governor of VélezMálaga, Alvaro de Zuarzo. This defeat was followed by harsh repression and clearances. Rebel land was confiscated and given to “Old Christians” (those who had never been Muslim). A further revolt, centred on Ronda in 1560 was followed by the definitive expulsion of Moriscos from the area. Many of those expelled hid in the inhospitable highlands and became known as “Monfi” (outcasts). That region of the Axarquia became, and was to remain, “bandit country".

Ten years ago, builders restoring a house in Calle Horno (Oven street), came across some books hidden in the middle of a mud and stone wall one metre wide. They included a Koran from the 13th century and a book of Muslim laws, from the troubled sixteenth century. Through the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, notorious robbers and killers lived in these hills where it was easy to disappear. From the days of the Monfi, who would cut the throats of innkeepers and priest informers, to nineteenth century brigands such as “El Bizco” the cross eyed bandit of El Borge, who was gunned down western style by the Guardia, the Axarquia was dangerous to travellers. During the Spanish Civil War the region largely supported the elected government of Spain against Franco’s fascists, but when the rebels won, many defeated republicans carried on a guerilla war in these hills, expecting that once the victorious allies of the second world war had dealt with Hitler and Mussolini, they would come for Franco. They did nothing of the sort and Franco continued to murder his opponents until his death in 1975. Poverty in post war Spain - the result of sanctions and political isolation - fell most heavily upon its poorest regions. Many of Cútar’s villagers had to travel to the north of Spain or to England, France or Germany to get work. Many elderly villagers still retain a little German or French from those days. The general slaughter of the men meant that women and children had to work rather than attend school and this state was encouraged by the Catholic church, which preferred rote learning to literacy. Cútar was again reduced to a quarter of its earlier population.

Registering your vehicle in Spain

Spanish license plates and registration document. Registering a non-Spanish vehicle in Spain is a complex and potentially costly procedure. However, you may be exempt from Spanish registration tax by getting Spanish number plates within one month of entering the country. But to do this, you need to become a resident. Linea Directa has been insuring expat drivers in Spain for over a decade and understands all the steps involved. Below we outline this process. STEP 1: OBTAINING A CERTIFICATE OF CONFORMITY This is a statement by the car’s manufacturer that it conforms to EU regulations. You will need the car’s chassis number to complete this straightforward process online at www.eurococ. eu/en/certificate_of_conformity. The charges for this service will vary according to type of vehicle, make and country of 1st registration. STEP 2: CURRENT LOG BOOK The vehicle’s original log book showing your name as the owner, the vehicles age and a valid UK address. You will also need the bill of sale for the car. STEP 3: RESIDENCY IN SPAIN The Spanish residency certificate (Certificado de Empadronamiento) is your official proof of residency in Spain. Your local town hall can provide you with this document. You will need to take your passport and proof of Spanish address (rental contract, contract to purchase or property deeds). STEP 4: OBTAINING A SPANISH MOT CERTIFICATE All vehicles over 4 years old must be roadworthy and clearly display a valid ITV sticker. The ITV (Vehicle Technical Inspection) must be tested at an authorised centre, just as for

161

an MOT test. You can find out the location of your nearest ITV centre on DGT website (equivalent to the DVLA). You can also call your local centre to make a booking. If the centre is busy, especially pre-summer, this can save a lot of time. The cost can vary but generally is around 40D for petrol-engine cars and 56D for diesel-engine cars. Step 5: OBTAINING A SPANISH EQUIVALENT OF A TAX DISC The Spanish Tax Agency can provide your vehicle with a valid “tax disc” for Spain, which must be carried in the car when in use. You will need to complete the relevant form online and pay the amount according to your car’s tax band. You can carry out all these procedures yourself or you can seek the assistance of an accountant to do this for you.

First Driving Impressions – Audi TT Coupe, UK Press Launch, Glasgow

The TT Coupe design study was first shown in Frankfurt in 1995 and it attracted a lot of attention. Many thought it would never see the light of day. But the first production cars rolled off the production line in July 1999, and they were very similar to the concept.

T

he first TT’s came to the UK in November 1999, and the 2nd generation was introduced in 2006 and now the 3rd generation has just gone on sale. There were 50,000 1st generations sold in the UK and over 60,000 of the 2nd, it has been a huge success for Audi. The UK is the largest market in the world for the TT, beating Germany and the US. Scotland in late October proved not to be the best place to test a new sports coupe. The weather was wild and wet and ironically England and Wales were enjoying a miniheatwave at the time. Just glancing at the new TT, you would be forgiven for not spotting the difference between the old and new model. On the face of it, it does look very similar. The biggest give-away, and the easiest thing to tell the two apart is the front, the “four-rings” have been moved from the grille to the bonnet, an evolution rather than a revolution, more a natural progression. It is thought an all-new car, it is lighter by up to 50kg, has a longer wheelbase, more interior space, larger boot capacity, improved engine performance, economy and reduced emissions. More aluminium has been used and there is a long list of technical advancements. It is a new car, but why change the design too much when you were already onto a winning formula? We drove the TT from the outskirts of Glasgow, past Loch Lomond and headed in a northerly direction, through flooded roads, over collapsed roads and driving around landslips, so thank you Mr Quattro for designing your 4WD system - very useful in Scotland. The new TT has been launched with a choice of two engines: a 2.0 litre TFSI 230ps with either a 18 THE MARKET PLACE

manual or an S Tronic gearbox and a 2.0 litre TDI Ultra 184ps diesel. The trim levels are either Sport or S line. The Quattro is only available with the S Tronic transmission and only on the petrol version. The CO² figure is as low as 110g/km on the TDI and it boasts a combined fuel consumption figure of 67.3mpg. Prices start from £29,860.00 OTR and go up to £35,335.00 OTR. A 310ps TTS version will be introduced around March. The interior has changed dramatically with very little left from the old car. The heater controls are now on the round air-vents, which did seem odd when you first get in the car, but you soon get used to where they have been repositioned. These integrated controls are certainly a first for Audi, and no doubt will be on other Audi models very soon. Another new feature is the Virtual Cockpit with a 12.3’’ high resolution LCD display right in front of the driver where the instrument cluster normally is. All information is displayed and customised by the driver including in-car entertainment, sat-nav, car controls, telephone etc and is a fully digital instrument cluster. Now this is fantastic and futuristic technology that works incredibly well and is so easy to use, like second nature. But the downside is that because the sat-nav screen is directly in front of the driver, it is virtually impossible for the passenger to see it, which can have its disadvantages, especially if you are somewhere strange and that extra pair of eyes helping to navigate is now not possible.

We drove up to “Rest and Be Thankful Road”… honestly that is what it is called, which is an old section of an off-road rally stage, and is quite scary at the best of times. But when the sides look like they are about to crumble at any moment you start to think it wouldn’t be a good idea to have a quick run up it to put the TT through its paces. A nice gentle run up the Glen was the best thing to do under the circumstances. A pity, but safety first. Out on the normal roads the TT drives so well, feeling solid and safe. Audi have turned a brilliant car into an even better one. There are no criticisms of it at all, it's almost perfect. It is quick and extremely quiet and the build quality is first class throughout. The Quattro system came into its own and definitely got us out of some potential difficulties. The weather in Scotland wasn’t much fun, but the TT certainly was.

More Fun Valentine Facts

There are various theories on the origin of Valentine's Day, but the most popular dates back to the time of the Roman Empire during the reign of Claudius II, 270 A.D. Claudius didn't want men to marry during wartime because he believed single men made better soldiers. Bishop Valentine went against his wishes and performed secret wedding ceremonies. For this, Valentine was jailed and then executed by order of the Emperor on Feb 14th. While in jail, he wrote a love note to the jailor's daughter, signing it, "From your Valentine."

 Casanova, well known as The World's Greatest Lover, ate chocolate to make him virile.

 The most fantastic gift of love is the Taj Mahal in India. It was built by Mughal Emperor Shahjahan as a memorial to his wife.

More Valentine History  The ancient Romans celebrated the Feast of Lupercalia on Feb 14th in honor of Juno, the queen of the Roman gods and goddesses. Juno was also the goddess of women and marriage.  Many believe the X symbol became synonymous with the kiss in medieval times. People who couldn't write their names signed in front of a witness with an X. The X was then kissed to show their sincerity.  Girls of medieval times ate bizarre foods on St. Valentine's Day to make them dream of their future spouse.  In the Middle Ages, young men and women drew names from a bowl to see who would be their Valentine. They would wear this name pinned onto their sleeves for one week for everyone to see. This was the origin of the expression "to wear your heart on your sleeve."  In 1537, King Henry VII officially declared Feb 14th the holiday of St. Valentine's Day. 20 THE MARKET PLACE

Nerja moves to reinstate bar terraces

Business leaders in Nerja have asked the town hall to challenge the regional government on legislation which, it claims, has cost over 30 direct jobs since its implementation locally in October. The problem the law attempted to address was the perennial clash between bars with music and outside terraces versus residents who complain about the noise coming from them. At the heart of issue in Nerja are the Plaza Tutti-Frutti and Calle Antonio MillĂłn which, over 20 years, have become the centre of the town's nocturnal social scene, particularly in the summer months.

The agreement was first signed some 14 years ago and is now expected to be carried out between 2020 and 2025.

More people are duped by internet scams than any other fraudulent activity, police have said. Independent Technology News by www.tracyandmatt.co.uk

Sony goes mad for SmartWear With CES (Consumer Electronics Show) news in full swing Sony have announced a new look, sleek stainless steel SmartWatch 3 to roll out in February 2015. In addition we are to see the introduction of a prototype concept, an all-in-one headset-style device with sensors optimised for running called the Smart B-Trainer.

A

t CES 2015 Sony introduced new products, partners and experiences to its evolving SmartWear range – a sleek stainless steel edition of SmartWatch 3, new Lifelog collaborations, and concept wearable devices, including a multi-sensor, waterproof headset prototype, from Sony Corporation, designed for optimising performance and providing real time insight on the running track. “Our approach to smart, wearable technology is based on the fundamentals of building depth and variety in user experiences, and providing choice with beautiful, functional products,” said Kaz Tajima, Senior Vice President, Head of UX Creative Design and Planning at Sony Mobile Communications. “The expansion of Lifelog – both in terms of its open API and our vision for new wearable concepts – will allow creative partners to integrate their apps and services to our platform – giving our users access to the richest, most varied wearable ecosystem.”

Over the past year, Sony Mobile has worked with creatives and brands from across the lifestyle, fashion, and design spectrum to explore custom apparel, establishing collections for Sony SmartWear from the likes of Jack Vartanian, Altewaisome, and Ted Baker – and most recently, the popular women’s lifestyle brand, Roxy.

To further broaden the range of wearing styles available, Sony also unveiled a new SmartWatch 3 holder, allowing users and partners alike to customise SmartWatch 3 with any standard 24mm watch strap; available from the early part of 2015.

An elegant creative approach – SmartWatch 3, now in stainless steel After launching in partnership this past Autumn with Google, SmartWatch 3 is Sony’s latest generation “SmartWatch". Sony unveiled the new stainless steel edition of SmartWatch 3, rolling out globally from next month. SmartWatch 3 in beautiful stainless steel matches contemporary with timeless aestheticism for a premium look and feel. It features a 1.6” 320×320 TFT LCD Transflective display for visibility in bright sunlight, and is of course water protected, rated IP68 – it charges via a

Even without your Android smartphone, SmartWatch 3 is a fun and useful accessory with impressive standalone functionality – featuring native music playback, intelligent sensor technology and a unique inbuilt GPS sensor. Golfshot and iFit are two developers already creating Android Wear experiences with SmartWatch 3's standalone capability, for both performance on the course and track respectively – from January, every SmartWatch 3 user will have exclusive access to the premium Golfshot and iFit apps out of the box3. Sony also announced a new collaboration with Virgin Atlantic – to explore SmartWear initiatives together, to develop unique solutions using Sony’s SmartWear products to support operational activities and enhance the customer service experience for Virgin Atlantic customers. More news will follow over the coming months.

Designing for modular technology, with SmartBand SWR10 At CES last year, Sony first showcased SmartBand SWR10 – a 24/7 wearable device; fully waterproof (rated IP58) despite its exposed microUSB port. A light, unobtrusive wearable that first featured Sony’s modular approach – the independent “core concept” – it allowed the technology to be worn in different colours and styles, to suit individual 26 THE MARKET PLACE

Horoscope February Aries

Mar. 21st - Apr. 20th

Gemini

May 22nd - June 21st

Leo

July 23rd - Aug. 21st

Libra

Sept. 24th - Oct. 23rd

During this month, to move forward, you could use a little bit of help from those offering it. Recent events have caused some level of uncertainty or confusion with regard to where you stand with one or two people with whom your position was unquestionable. If you want the truth, ask a few for advice. Be prepared, for the truth will be an eye-opener.

Usually, you find yourself in a similar position to one where you found yourself in previously because you just follow similar courses of action and that's where you find yourself now. You handled it differently then because circumstances were different then. Don't underestimate how much wiser you are now. Take a detour and enjoy the changes that come your way. A line needs to be drawn clearly now in your life, Leo. A liberty or two is being taken and you could be wondering how best to deal with someone else's inability to grasp a concept from your perspective. It will be up to you to make a point or highlight a reason why you're not prepared to simply tolerate their imposed unfairness. During this month, certain ideas of yours would not be that appropriate for the season. New factors present themselves before you. You ignore changes in your circumstances or attitudes yet live in hope that an opportunity might arise to help you pursue something more fruitful some day. Be honest about how relevant or appropriate a long-held dream is in your current situation.

Nov. 23rd - Dec. 22nd

For this month, there would be a worry in your life as to who is in control of your life and its consequences. Not so long ago, you were probably wondering what the answers to those questions were. Now, you are in charge in a way you weren't previously. You are in a position now to dictate how something is going to be done in ways you've wanted it to be.

Aquarius

Somewhere in your world, something is taking absolute priority over anything else. The sky doesn't suggest this has reached obsessive stages yet but you're not far off. Something does matter but be careful you're not giving it more attention than it deserves to the detriment of something else.

For this month your mind would be free waiting for information to be indelibly transferred. All is fine until you learn to listen to what other people tell you and believe them. You appear to be absorbing negativity from certain quarters now as the year has started. Your doubt levels are increasing but this is temporary. Keep your cool and act on your impulses.

For this month, for every step forward you take there would be two steps backwards. It is frustrating that, just as you grow and get used to seeing something come to fruition, you have to accept the need to start again in some way before further progress can be made. Don't see what's happening now as frustrating. See it as a superb way to make sure something is done properly. Knowing what you don't want often helps to identify what we want. An occasional problem arises when you dismiss something you believed you didn't want only to discover you actually want or need it. You may think you're doing a frustrating U-turn by looking upon something from the past to provide what you need now but trust it's more appropriate now than it was back then. A situation brewing in your life for the past few weeks or so is showing signs of culminating now for the month ahead. You undoubtedly know more now than you did a month or so ago and are probably also prepared to summon a bit more courage now than you were perhaps able to then. It is time to clear the air in some way. For this month, it is becoming clear that a period of uncertainty is becoming less uncertain. That's the good news. The not-so-good news surrounds an obstacle causing delay to progress you've made. Just as something is moving in the direction, doubt creeps in your life. Something is changing, but what you're feeling is likely to be insecurity. Soon, you will feel more secure. During this month you are likely to believe available options are being removed, one by one. It's as if an invisible hand is blocking your every move, creating obstacles where you believed a path was clear. You're being primed to take action you've been fearful of taking and this can only create essential room you need. This period is an excellent time to showcase your inner abilities.

Trends in decoration 2015 Each new year brings several innovations and design trends that define and give substance to the visual aesthetics of the coming months. Some trends ended in 2014 but there are new trends that have entered with force in 2015.

Warm Metals Gold and copper were already trend setters in the market in previous years and these again will be one of the major trends in decoration. Hexagonal Geometry Geometric design in general but in particular, hexagonal designs that are repeated in carpets, textiles, stackable shelves, decorative elements and even tiles in bathrooms. Suspended Items Bedside tables and desks are cleared by incorporating suspended lamps. Kitchen bulbs are replaced by rows of small hanging lamps that bring light over counters or dining tables. Even plants are raised in pots, vertical gardens and macrame. Leather Handles Animal skins, traditionally used as upholstery, can be seen this year used for handles for cupboard doors and drawers.

40 THE MARKET PLACE

Variety of finishes for Plumbing The kitchen and bathroom fittings are no longer limited to the classic chrome finish. Gold and copper and even matt black are the latest trends. Dark Wall Colours Walls in bedrooms or rest areas are being painted in green, blue or dark charcoal colours to reduce light intensity and create intimate welcoming environments for rest. Decorative Objects made from Concrete Polished concrete began to be popular for flooring and then started to be incorporated into walls on bathrooms and kitchens. This year you will find decorative objects combined with natural materials like wood, marble or gold or copper metals made out of concrete. Handmade Textiles Traditional weaving techniques are back in fashion such as knitting, crocheting and macrame.

Peppermint oil has been shown to have beneficial effects for digestive problems like irritable bowel syndrome, dyspepsia, colic, and indigestion. Rosmarinic acid, one of the antioxidants in mint, has anti-inflammatory properties that may help ease seasonal allergies. Meanwhile, the menthol in mint can help to ease cold symptoms (think of it as nature's cough drop), especially when consumed as a tea.

They're known as statins, and the science behind how they function in the body reveals that these powerful drugs gradually degrade the brain by depriving it of cholesterol, leading to memory problems, and dementia. In his book Lipitor: Thief of Memory, Dr. Duanne Graveline, M.D., wrote about his horrific experience with statins, and how they caused him to suffer two transient global amnesia events as well as chronic neuropathy. The former astronaut explains how these traumatic events were the direct result of statins altering his brain. His good friend Dr. David Brownstein also highlighted the mechanics behind this damage on his blog, pointing out that statins work by poisoning an enzyme known as HMG-CoA reductase, which the body uses to produce cholesterol, adrenal hormones, sex hormones and memory proteins. HMG-CoA reductase is also responsible for maintaining cell energy, which is needed by every system of the body. Artificially blocking or otherwise inhibiting this vital enzyme is a recipe for health disaster, explains Dr. Brownstein, which is why he advises against anyone taking statin drugs. He also questions why any cognizant doctor would prescribe them, knowing that as many as 3.6 million people have reported brain dysfunction as a result of their use. "You can't poison a crucial enzyme or block an important receptor for the long-term and expect a good result," explained Dr. Brownstein in his book Drugs That Don't Work and Natural Therapies That Do.

5 Emergency first aid items which don't sound like medicine These are all lifesaving items that most people may not even realise are medicine in the first place. 1) Manuka Honey - Manuka honey is Mother Nature's perfect wound dressing. Produced by honey bees that feast on the flowers of melaleuca bushes. Manuka honey seals wounds like a natural bandage, keeping out bacteria and aerosolized viruses. When used with wound dressings, it makes an extremely effective wound treatment for victims of burns, cuts or scrapes. 2) Activated Charcoal - Activated charcoal is an absorbent material. This means its properties include a unique physical structure that attracts and binds with many poisons, pesticides and toxic heavy metals. It is one of the key components in most off-the-shelf water filters because of its ability to bind with a surprising array of toxins. Activated charcoal can be used to build your own makeshift water filtration system using a 5-gallon bucket, a few pounds of pebbles and some clean sand. 3) Veterinary Blood Stop Powder - Veterinary supplies are a fantastic source for emergency medicine, and one of the medicines few people know about is called "hemostatic powdered medicine." It stops bleeding FAST. A nearly identical product has existed for literally thousands of years in the world of traditional Chinese medicine. It's called "Yunnan Baiyao," and it also stops bleeding almost instantly. The ingredients remain a family secret, but it is believed to be made primarily from natural TCM herbs and plants. 4) Essential Oil Wipes - The product is called "Defence Body Wipes" and it is made with just two powerful essential oils: Tea Tree Oil and Eucalyptus Oil, both of which offer astonishing properties on their own. Eucalyptus Oil, Tea Tree Oil are natural antibacterials, and they also kill fungi, superbugs and are very likely effective at killing Ebola on contaminated surfaces. (Bleach also does the trick for Ebola on surfaces.) If you have these oils, you can make your own wipes, or you can simply purchase pre-made products like Defence Body Wipes which deliver the benefits of these oils in a convenient package with the added benefit of NO artificial fragrance chemicals. 5) Live Aloe Vera - Aloe vera can be home grown as a source of food and medicine. You can eat the gel (not the skin or the brownish sap, but the clear gel only) or blend it into smoothies. The gel is much like Manuka honey in its antibacterial and wound healing properties. It can be rubbed directly onto burns or wounds to function as a selfsealing natural bandage that also kills bacteria and traps aerosolized particles that may carry pathogens. 46 THE MARKET PLACE

Brain games not effective in improving intelligence

For people who received computerized brain-boosting games over Christmas or who just enjoy doing, consider yourselves warned: They're not providing the extensive benefits you may think. Brain-training games require the user to perform certain tasks on a computer. While such games may help a person become skilled at a very specific tasks, little evidences exists to suggest that they improve a person's cognitive abilities or make them more intelligent. Neurologists confirm that the best ways to boost brain power stem mainly from social interaction, engagement in challenging activities such as learning a new hobby like photography, exercise and enjoying a diet high in antioxidants, healthy fats, fruits and vegetables. The promise of a magic bullet detracts from the best evidence to date, which is that cognitive health in old age reflects the long-term effects of healthy, engaged lifestyles.

New Antibiotic Discovery The first new antibiotic to be discovered in nearly 30 years has been hailed as a ‘paradigm shift’ in the fight against the growing resistance to drugs. Teixobactin has been found to treat many common bacterial infections such as tuberculosis, septicaemia and C. diff, and could be available within five years. But more importantly it could pave the way for a new generation of antibiotics because of the way it was discovered. Scientists have always believed that the soil was teeming with new and potent antibiotics because bacteria have developed novel ways to fight off other microbes. But 99% of microbes will not grow in laboratory conditions leaving researchers frustrated that they could not get to the life-saving natural drugs. Now a team from Northeastern University in Boston, Massachusetts, have discovered a way of using an electronic chip to grow the microbes in the soil and then isolate their antibiotic chemical compounds.

News: Free medicine delivered to all homes...

Part 1 in a series by Knud Byrjalsen, Chiropractic Clinic, Nerja.

I don't know about you or the many other people that we live among in our little multi-cultural society of south Spain, but l remember when living in the States for a few years when studying Chiropractic there, that in any american home there would be a medicine cabinet hanging on the wall just over the sink in the bathroom.

N

ow, if you happen to have one of those, l would ask you to imagine going out there to your medicine caninet, but you do not have to open it, because that is not where you will find the free medicine l am talking about. Instead look down from where it is hanging and you will see a sink, and connected to the sink a tap with cold water coming out of it if turned. A liquid that can save you from many diseases and ailments when supplied in the right amount. Did you know this...? Maybe you are one of the increasing amount of people turning to water to improve your health, maybe you always did, or maybe you have only done so for some time, or maybe like too many people, you never did... But what l am about to tell you will probably shock you. Not only because the info is shocking, but also because you will be asking why this info hasn't reached you before. Why it hasn't reached you before is a long and tragic story of, among other things, the good old greed. But let me start by asking you this. What do you think is the most common deficiency in man today? Well, it is not protein deficiency or carbohydrate deficiency, and it is not lack of any vitamin. Nor is it lack of beer or wine. It is lack of water!! Simple as that. Dehydration! I can already hear some of you say, "but l drink loads of fluids, tea, coffee, beer, or soft drinks". Yes, most people do, and this is one of the reasons you are not already dead. Those fluids give you JUST about enough liquid to survive, and even survive well. But some of you are not surviving well. You are surviving with diseases or ailments that are caused by insufficient water. Dehydration. If we look at what water is doing in your body, and why your body needs more of it, you will soon understand that drinking additional water every day can, and will, make a difference in your health status to the far better. Let me explain. When the body is dehydrated, a rationing and distribution system for the available water given to your body becomes operative according to a predetermined priority program. A form of drought management, if you like. When you drink water, this water is NOT distributed equally to all parts of your body. As we know, the body is very clever, and has a memory. It knows that in the past there has NOT been sufficient water, and so only the vital areas will receive it. If you indeed are drinking enough water, and have done so on a consistent basis, all areas will be supplied. But if you are not dinking enough, only certain chosen areas will get it. Among the chosen few is of course the brain that they say consists of about 85 percent water. Like 48 THE MARKET PLACE

So if you think that a dry that there was far from enough room for mouth is a first sign of dehydration, think again... if you experience a dry mouth, it is everybody. So they were all crammed into small cells. This naturally caused a lot of a desperate cry for water by the body, and is way down the list of signs of dehydration. stress to many or all of the inmates, and a great number of them developed stress Obviously the kidneys need to be cleared with water at all times to prevent toxic build related illnesses, one of which was peptic up, or infections will sooner or later set in , ulcers. News from local animal charities C.A.S. (Costa Animal Society) Animal News Owners of 15 dromedaries have been detained by police on Tenerife after they were transported there by sea in horrendous conditions. The animals, en route to the Three Kings procession in Santa Cruz, were packed tight with their feet bound in two lorries. Ferry passengers reported their plight to the police and the animals, which all survived, did not appear in the procession. The Guardia Civil say “numerous” irregularities were found by officers inspecting puppies in transit during December. Many of over 400 examined in five provinces were found to be under the legal minimum of three months old, required when importing or selling dogs in Spain. They also warn against the purchase of animals on the Internet, especially if the price seems excessively low. Over 70 canaries have been found in “appalling” conditions in a departing traveller’s hand-luggage at Madrid’s Adolfo Suárez-Barajas airport. The birds were reported to be heaped together in two cages, without water, in a sealed waterproof bag. The passenger could not produce the paperwork necessary for their exportation to Tangier so all 73 were confiscated and taken to a Madrid bird recovery and protection centre.

Dog Academy raises funds for CAS Just before Christmas, Wendy Towe of the Dog Academy organized a highly successful dog show at El Varadero, the Boatyard Bar on Nerja’s Playazo beach. Around 50 dogs were entered in 12 classes, from Best Pedigree Dog and Bitch to the dog with the Waggiest Tail. Best in show was a beautiful boxer. Photo: Colin McMorris The day raised a staggering 2,600 euros for the Costa Animal Society, and during January a Presentation Party was held at the bar during Vera Newing from CAS (left) receives a cheque for 2,600E from Dog Show organizer Wendy Towe. which a cheque was presented to CAS president Vera Newing. “The money will be used solely to finance the veterinary and kennel fees for many unwanted and stray dogs and cats,” said Vera, adding that this would help to find new homes for them as quickly as possible. CAS offers grateful thanks to Wendy and Allen for organizing the event, and to Laura and her family for their help in staging the show and the party at their bar.

Tragic start, happy ending Two members of the Costa Animal Society who live in the countryside near Frigiliana went out one night recently and found two small, bedraggled and starving puppies. The two females pups, later named Meg and Lola, were just three or four months old, and were crying and hungry after having been abandoned in a ditch. Neighbour Steve took them in, fed them and gave them love. For several weeks, he worked to socialise Meg and Lola and to house train them, as claerly they had not been in a home before. Then a notice was posted on CAS’s Facebook page and on Digame, seeking new homes for the puppies. Steve was contacted by a couple who came and saw the pups but found it difficult to decide which one to take. Eventually, they chose Meg who now has a lovely new home and is very happy. Everyone was then concerned about Lola until Steve decided 50 THE MARKET PLACE

that he and Lola, plus his own cross mastiff Bella had become a family unit, and so she is now happily ensconced in a new home as well. This is one of the happy endings reported by CAS, but, sad to say, that there are a lot of other cases which do not end so well.

Penal Code cracks down on abuse

Steve with Lola and Meg. Photo: Colin McMorris

Anyone convicted of ill-treating animals could be banned from keeping pets or livestock of any kind for up to three years. An amendment to Spain’s Penal Code has introduced stiffer penalties and broadened the range of animals protected. However, critics say it has not gone far enough. Until now, those found guilty of the neglect or abuse of animals could only be banned from trading or working with animals. Now, if the action put the life of an animal in danger, a total ban can be imposed. Those who abandon an animal in the street or in the wild can also face substantial fines. The number of species now protected by the law has been increased to include ferrets, iguanas, pigs, snakes and tarantulas which are in the care of a human. It also covers turtles and tortoises which are being abandoned in rivers and wetlands by their owners and which can then put native species in danger. Critics say the revised legislation is, “too little, too late,” as it fails to encompass cock and dog fighting which are already illegal but frequently slip through the net. They add it also excludes the ill-treatment of animals, particularly bulls, during some local fiestas. Meanwhile, a referendum organised by the Partido Andalucista in Málaga last month suggested three out of four people in the city are opposed to bull fights. Over 9,000 people made their views known in the survey which was conducted on-line, by telephone canvassing and through a traditional card poll at the party’s local offices. Some 71.25 per cent of respondents declared themselves in favour of abolishing the practice.

A Big Thank-You The Costa Animal Society sends a big vote of thanks to Jacky Gomez of Nerja Town Hall’s Foreign Residents Department for arranging a grant of 500 euros. The gesture acknowledges the dedication of the work done by CAS volunteers to home stray and abandoned animals in the town.

TAIL (Torrox Animal International League) As any courteous, polite person would usually do, the President of Tail always endeavours to thank the supporters of the charity when donations are received. Often this is not possible through the manner in which the donation is made, for example a D50 note given into one of our shops, or a largish note put into one of Tail’s collecting tins which are usually full of 10’s, 20’s, 50’s cents with a few 1 or 2 euros, leave no clue to their origin. And any very large donation as a lump sum is always communicated beforehand. However I have touched on previously how the small

denomination monthly standing order direct to our bank or into our Paypal account has, by the end of one year become a substantial sum, and Tail set out to try and make direct contact with the fair number that are set up with Tail being the beneficiary. Well, we find it is easier thought about than being able to achieve. You see, even though the bank and Paypal will put the donor’s name out there, they are prevented from giving any contact details by the Data Protection Act which appears to work the same thoughout Europe for we are unable to find contact details of donors in Sweden, Germany, Holland, Ireland, U.K., Switzerland and Spain. So to be clear, Tail sincerely thanks all the supporters who have taken the time and effort to complete a standing order with the desire to help the abandoned and maltreated dogs in our area. was once a sleepy fishing village but now the town has a population of over 21,000. The Balcón de Europa is a magnificent promenade that was made famous by King Alfonso XII , who’s statue now takes pride of place at the far end. Close by is the 17th century Church of El Salvador, and the beautiful gardens of Capistrano Playa. The town boasts an active Centro de Cultura, and a new attraction is The Fuente de Europa in Verano Azul Park, which is a very impressive monument, made from pieces of stone donated from EU member states. There are many beaches to be found either side and in front of the town, including Burriana with its numerous cafés and restaurants. Here too, you can take advantage of the water sports on offer, including water skiing, scuba diving and sailing. Just outside Nerja on the coast road towards Maro is a very impressive aquaduct which used to supply the local sugar factory, but is now used to carry water to local farms.

Torre del Mar

is just 30 minutes from Malaga, and is the beach resort of Velez Málaga. Its population of 21,000 grows between June and September to 150,000. The towns attractions have expanded over the last few years to cope with the demand, and now the four kilometres of beach have been enhanced by an impressive promenade, which stretches all the way to Caleta de Vélez, a port providing over 200 berths and offering sailing and water sports. Throughout the summer, there are many Chiringuitos on the beach, serving fresh barbequed fish and ice cold beers. In 2002, Paseo de Larios was pedestrianized, and is now a tranquil promenade, with plenty of pavement cafés and restaurants. At the seafront end of Larios is a line of bars and discos which continue throughout the night on Fridays and Saturdays. The history of Torre is uncertain, but it is thought that it might have been part of an ancient Greek settlement, known as Mainake, which was destroyed by the Carthaginians. Tombs of the Carthaginians were found at the mouth of the river Velez. More recently, it was a small fishing village until major development began in the 1970’s.

La Herradura

nestles between the Punta de la Mona to the east and the rock of Cerro Gordo to the west. The bay enjoys shelter from west winds creating mostly crystal-clear waters, and is a popular location for water sports & paragliding. There are numerous beach bars and restaurants serving specialities of the region, including tropical salads, fresh fish or paella. The Marina del Este near La Herradura is tucked betwen Punta de la Mona to the west and Cotobro to the east. It boasts a beautiful port, elegantly designed to incorporate select shops, art galleries, bars and restaurants. This small strip of coast also claims to be the best place to dive between Almeria and Gibraltar, and is home to one of the areas leading diving schools.

Lake Viñuela

is a 15 minute drive from the N340 Autovia, leaving at the junction for Velez Malaga. Head inland along the A356; this direction also leads to numerous inland white villages. The first turning on our map is to Benamocarra, which is sign posted to the right after the last roundabout into Velez Malaga. This road will take you back over the main road and then also on to Iznate, and divides to take you to Almachar, El Borge and Cutar. The second turning off the A356 is on the right (after the Repsol garage) to Trapiche. Continue on the A356, and immediately you will see another junction on the left, sign posted to Benamargosa, Triana, Comares and Cutar. This road will also take you as far as Rio Gordo (for a scenic drive). There is a popular Spanish bar on the corner of this junction called El Cruz. Back on the A356, continue on and you will pass another junction on the right, to Canillas de Aceituno, and finally you will see Lake Vinuela in front of you. Turn right before the lake for Puente de Don Manuel, Alcaucin, Viñuela and Periana; carry straight on for Los Romanes, Rio Gordo and Colmenar.

Frigiliana

encompass 39.74 sq km within which live just over 3,000 people year round. Frigiliana is a popular tourist destination, and because there are many holiday homes here, the population triples during the summer months. The history of Frigiliana dates from prehistoric times. The village has been inhabited by numerous civilisations from the Phoenicians and Romans to the Arabs, who had the greatest impact on the town’s development. During the Christian reconquest, Frigiliana was the site of numerous battles culminating in the famous battle of the Rock of Frigiliana in 1569 which ended in the complete expulsion of the Moorish people. One can learn the history of this struggle by walking through the streets of the historic section where there are a series of twelve ceramic plaques posted about which explain the entire story.
