Taormina in 8 Hours Taormina was first described to me as the jewel of Sicily and it’s not hard to see why. Beautiful Baroque architecture and ancient ruins, adorable boutiques and cafés and stunning vistas overlooking postcard-perfect coastlines. Where do I sign up? By Jessica Infantino Trumble
L
ocated on the eastern side of Sicily high above the Ionian Sea between Messina and Catania, Taormina has long been a tourist magnet with a resort-town feel like that of the Amalfi Coast or Lake Como. The result and only possible drawback is that Taormina can be too popular at times with inflated prices and flocks of holiday-goers crowding its narrow streets and scenic viewpoints. So during our stay in Catania we decided that the best option for us would be to dedicate one day to discover all of the richness that Taormina has to offer. Needless to say we weren’t disappointed. Here’s what you need to know if you too are dreaming of a daytrip to this incredible destination.
How to Get There Taormina is about an hour away from Catania by car or bus. Since we had rented a car for our trip, driving would offer us more flexibility over public transportation. It’s a relatively straightforward route via A18 and SS114, but since Taormina’s historic core is closed to traffic you have to sort of loop around the city to reach one of its three parking facilities. We parked at the Porta Catania garage, which is just steps from the city centre and charges by the hour. Be sure to take your ticket with you because you pay via an automated vending machine at the street level entrance (level 7) before returning to our car. If you’re driving it’s also worthwhile to note that there is one toll along the way. Instead of paying as you pass through, you take a ticket when you get on the Autostrada and give it to the attendant at the booth when you get off to determine how much you owe.
10am – Corso Umberto I The main road in Taormina is the pedestrianized Corso Umberto I, which spans the once fortified city between Porta Catania and Porta Messina. Like much of Sicily, the Taormina we see today is a product of many layers of 8 THE MARKET PLACE
history with influences ranging from the Greeks and Romans to the Arabs and Normans, which is reflected in the different architecture styles of the buildings and sites along this main street. Our first stop was Piazza del Duomo with its 13th century medieval Cathedral of San Nicolo that boasts a beautiful marbled-lined interior despite its rather simple exterior. The square is also home to the town’s city hall and the Quattro Fontane, an ornate fountain named after its 4 distinct spouts. Our next stop was Piazza IX Aprile, which is perhaps one of the most iconic spots in Taormina. Here you’ll find a handful of stylish cafes, a clock tower and the richly Baroque Church of San Giuseppe anchoring the checkerboard square. It’s a great place to sip a cappuccino at a café or sit on one of its benches to take in the gorgeous panoramic view of the Bay of Naxos below.
11am – Ancient Theatre We skipped passed the rest of Corso Umberto since our plan was to return to shop later in the day and continued on towards the Ancient Theatre. Impressive to say the least, the amphitheater dates back to the 3rd century B.C. and reflects both Greek and Roman influence. It takes full of advantage of its dramatic location, almost as if it’s suspended between the sky above and sea below, with a smoldering Mount Etna in the background and views as far as mainland Italy on a clear day. continued on page 10

THE MARKET PLACE 9
the Piazza Belvedere viewpoint off Via Pirandello near the far edge of town, which offers the best perspective of the island and crystalline bay below. From here we decided to take the stairs to the left of the viewpoint and make the grueling 15-minute descend down steep stairs to reach Isola Bella. It was more exhausting than we anticipated, but the stunning views made up for it. As an alternative, you can take the funvia (cable car) from the Taormina station on Via Pirandello between the bus terminal and Porta Messina to Mazzarò and walk about 10 minutes more to the beach. The cable car trip is only about 5 minutes and runs every 15 minutes – definitely a lot less strenuous than the stairs, but we enjoyed the fact that we passed virtually no one else along the way and felt like we earned both the beach and that night’s pasta. Both options converge at a final set of stairs that lead down to the rocky beach packed with sunbathers who have seemingly set up camp for the day. You’ll also find a few restaurants and souvenir shops selling beach essentials you may have forgotten (i.e. towels, sunscreen, water shoes). We made our way through the more crowded sections of the beach and found a quiet spot on the far right of the bay. We spent some time cooling off in the water* then walked across to explore the island before making the daunting trek back up to town. *One piece of advice, do NOT sit on the algae-covered rocks in the water. Not only are they slippery and sharp in some places, but the bacteria can result in a nasty rash on your skin that requires a trip to the farmacia for prescription strength cortisone cream. I’m telling you this from personal experience so you don’t meet the same misfortune that I did!
4pm – Shopping At nearly 358 feet wide, the ancient theatre is the second largest in Sicily after Siracusa and is still used today for concerts, performances and a film festival in the summer. Inside there’s also an interactive area with computer animations that show what the theatre might have looked like during its glory days. When we visited in September the line moved relatively fast, although if you’re visiting during peak season you may want to consider buying your tickets online in advance and arriving early to beat the heat of the mid-day sun.
1pm – Villa Comunale Speaking of the sun, we were definitely in need of some respite from the heat and found relief in Taormina’s beautiful public gardens, Villa Comunale. The gardens were created in the late 19th century by English noblewoman Florence Trevelyan, who first came to Sicily in part because of her complicated relationship with Queen Victoria and eventually ended up marrying the mayor of Taormina.
At this point we were ready for another granita, this time arancia rossa (blood orange) and gelsi (mulberry) flavours, followed by a coffee break at Bar E Snackbar Capriccio on Corso Umberto, 85. We ordered a much-needed espresso and the first cannolo of our trip, which was filled-to-order with an amazingly light cream with just the right amount sweetness and dipped in chocolate chips and pistachio pieces. Amazing to say the least. From here we wandered in and an out of the shops along Corso Umberto and the surrounding streets, which sell everything from cheap souvenirs to high-end jewelry, art, ceramics, food, sweets and more. Among the items we couldn’t resist were the bold red-orange coral jewelry at Vadalá Salvatore at Via Teatro Greco, 27 and the beautiful ceramic serving ware at Ceramiche Rapisarda at Corso Umberto, 211-213 that would be perfect for entertaining at home. It started raining just as we were about to wrap up our shopping and head back to our car, marking the end of a great day in Taormina. If we had more time (and energy) we would have liked to have made the trek up to Castelmola, a former hilltop village above Taormina with even more sweeping views, castle ruins and the novelty Bar Turisi known for its almond wine along the way. It’s reachable by bus or by foot up a windy road about an hour each way.
Villa Comunale is designed like a traditional English garden and overflows with Mediterranean plants, trees and flowers. Punctuated by terraces, towers and (more) views for days, the gardens are a multi-level paradise and welcomed retreat from the otherwise crowded streets of Taormina. It was also the perfect place to cool off with our first granita, a heavenly almond and chocolate chip frozen delight.
2pm – Isola Bella Refreshed and recharged our next destination was the famed Isola Bella, a small rocky islet that was once the home of Florence Trevelyan and is now a nature reserve. Depending on sea conditions there’s often a narrow pebbly path that connects that the island with the mainland for visitors to walk across (or in some cases wade through shallow water). We first spotted Isola Bella from 10 THE MARKET PLACE

19 FEBRUARY 7:00 PM - HOBSON'S CHOICE
This well-known comedy has long been a favourite with theatre companies and audiences alike. Written by Harold Brighouse it was first produced in America in 1915 and at the Apollo theatre, London, the following year. In 1954 it was made into a BAFTA Award winning film, starring Charles Laughton as Hobson with John Mills and Prunella Scales in her first film role. Set in Salford, near Manchester, in 1880, it features the larger-than-life character, Henry Hobson, a prosperous bootmaker and his three daughters. Despite the Victorian setting the play resonates with current attitudes as Hobson’s overbearing attitude to his daughters and declared misogyny are tamed by the feisty eldest of the three, Maggie. At the same time she takes the timid and self-effacing Willie Mossop in hand and moulds him into a confident, self-assured and successful business man. Reasons to install underfloor heating Underfloor heating is very common in the countries of Northern Europe, where in winter the temperatures drop down really low and heating needs to be kept on for a certain number of hours per day. But why would it be necessary to install it in a country like Spain where average temperatures are milder? Here are some good reasons. Aesthetics and Comfort Among the benefits of having underfloor heating are the aesthetic and comfort advantages. The house will be free of radiators or heaters and the heat is distributed evenly throughout the house while avoiding the effects of air convection generated by other systems.
Economic Savings Radiant floors can mean a hefty initial investment, since installation of this system is much more expensive than the heating itself due to the plumbing work involved. However, in the medium and long term a significant energy saving is achieved, since this system consumes less energy than a conventional one because it emits heat evenly over the entire surface of the floor and not only at one point such as radiators.
Efficiency It is a system that does not require temperatures as high as radiators, which need water at 70 degrees, while the radiant floor needs it at just 40 degrees 16 THE MARKET PLACE
to reach the same environmental temperature. This translates into considerable savings.
Hygiene and Health Among the advantages of radiant floors is the hygiene factor too. For those who are allergic to dust it is an ideal option, since the low continued on page 18

speed with which the hot air is produced on a radiant floor means is does not stir the dust around. In addition, the system does not dry out the atmosphere, thanks to the fact that the distribution of heat is much more homogeneous than in the case of radiators.
Multiple benefits The radiant surface system has the additional advantage that it can not only act as heating but in summer, when the temperatures rise, it can also be used as air conditioning to cool the home. It is a system which brings many advantages. Underfloor heating frees up floor and wall space in the home and avoids any
accidents that may occur with children and radiators such as burns. As mentioned earlier the initial outlay can put people off installing an underfloor heathing system, but over time that investment will be returned, especially with the possibility of subsidies from government institutions.

First Driving Impressions – Alfa Romeo Stelvio Quadrifoglio, UK Press Event, Glasgow Not only is it difficult to spell Quadrifoglio, it is also difficult to say it... it's quite a mouthful, and the car is quite a handful.
U
p to Glasgow to pick up the Stelvio’s at the airport, then set off out on a days adventure in this high-powered
SUV. This Stelvio is powered by a 2.9-litre Bi-Turbo petrol engine, that produces a whopping 510 hp, goes from 0-62mph in a very quick 3.8 seconds and has a top speed of 176 mph, which certainly isn’t permitted in Scotland, or virtually anywhere really. It got round the Nurburgring in 7 mins and 51 seconds; i'm not familiar with this track - which is basically a road really - so don’t know if this is good or not, but I suspect it’s a pretty quick time. As we left the airport we got on the motorway and headed out towards 'themthere-hills'. A nice, steady 70 mph on the M8 and the engine was barely ticking over, but it still made a lovely noise from under the bonnet. There is a 50:50 weight distribution, but no compromise. The Stelvio is one of the lightest SUVs in its segment. It uses highstrength steel for the body, aluminium for the suspension, doors, bonnet, boot, wings and engine, and has a carbon fibre driveshaft, and with that 510hp, the whole car needs to be very solid. We soon got to the hills and it was time to try the cars handling and dynamics on some of the twisty roads, and to test its power, but being very careful to stay within the speed limits, which we did. You put your foot down from standstill and the thing is off like a cheetah, or even like a powerful electric car. Although it throws 20 THE MARKET PLACE
you back into your seat, you don’t really get the impression it is going as quick as it is. Maybe it is because it is a high-seated SUV and not a sports car where you are virtually sat on the floor. The Stelvio is very comfortable, the seats are firm and supportive, but you don’t feel like you are sitting on a plank of wood. Alfa have got the seating just right. The whole of the interior just ooooozes quality, and the wrapped upper dashboard with its standard black stitching, or optional red or green stitching is a work of Italian art. The Stelvio measures 4,702mm long, 1,955mm wide and 1,681mm tall, so it is well in proportion. The length also lends itself to allowing plenty of room for five adults, along with quite a bit of luggage, as the boot is capacious. The Quadrifoglio comes with a long list of standard equipment, including many safety features. It has a 7-inch TFT Instrument
cluster, and although it has Sat-Nav as standard, we didn’t think it was the best available in the market, being a bit slow to give instructions. It made a fantastic noise as we started it at Glasgow airport, and on the motorway, but it really came into its own as we went up the hills, with a glorious note from the exhaust that shook many a sporran, and spooked some of the sheep – so we apologise for any upset caused north of the border. Alfa have certainly got it right in the noise department in the Quadrifoglio. Prices for the Stelvio Quadrifoglio start from £69,990 OTR, so for a well spec’d, high power, good looking SUV, with those all-important Alfa Romeo badges on it, it does look like good value. Add to that it is very practical, flexible and useful. It will certainly bring some new customers to this Italian brand, who want something a bit different from the norm.

Local News Local News Local News Local News No companies interested in work to reinstate Velez Tram
A new setback is hampering the Velez Malaga plan to put the tram back into operation. No companies are interested in executing the necessary works so that the tram can run again between Torre del Mar and Velez Malaga. The tender has not received one single offer. This obliges the council to declare the bidding as void and initiate a negotiated procedure to which various companies will be invited. If there had have been proposals from companies to complete the works the operation of the tram once more could have been likely at the beginning of 2020. But now having to start a negotiating process will take longer and the tram will almost certainly take well into 2020 to be reinstalled. Since the suspension of the tram in June 2012 the tram infrastructure has not had any maintenance. Not only that, but some elements of the tram route have been re-used, such as traffic lights to replenish other streets.
Julen investigations begin
throughout the municipality where the incident took place. Experts have also confirmed after running autopsy tests that Julen had a clean fall down the hole. The position of the body suggested that the toddler had a free fall of 71 metres and that then he fell on to a dirt floor because the well was partially full of earth. After the 13 day rescue effort the rescuers were finally able to get to the little boys body in the early hours of the 26th January.
The Mayor of Frigiliana Alejandro Herrero Platero has assured the town that it has consolidated it's position as the tourist leader in the area. Its location is priveleged and presents a wide range of services, this makes it attractive for visitors to visit. Frigiliana has many charms, views of the sea, the dazzling mountains and the Mudejar Morisco Historical Centre. There is also a great cultural offering including the Theatre competition, the Art Route, the Festival in August. All this together with the normal festivals such as Holy Week, San Antonio festival, Cruces de Mayo (May Crosses), Carnival and Dia de la Miel (Honey Day). Not to mention the Festival of Tres Culturas.

The initial investigation will be around the actual borehole and whether or not it was legal. The Guardia Civil will also try to find out the exact circumstances in which this tragedy took place. Thanks were paid to the 300 workers who helped in the huge operation to try to rescue Julen from down the well. The local town hall of Totalan also announced three days of mourning 22 THE MARKET PLACE

Axarquia to offer gastronomic tourist routes
The gastronomic tourist routes are intended to attract the traveller for the popular cuisine that is celebrated in the region, and will include products like grapes and raisins with which the region is already known for, the wines made with the muscat grape, the extra virgin olive oil that is made in 12 different cooperatives, the cane and bee honey, the meat, and the fish from Caleta. The president of the Axarquia region confirmed that, "we should take advantage of the growing demand for gastronomic and wine tourism to give the visitor a trip through the area in terms of cuisine and native products." "We have a rich gastronomy based on the Mediterranean Diet. Among our native products are many that have been rooted in the region for millennia. It is a unique opportunity to promote our people, the products and places." Maps with routes will be available in tourist offices and tourists will also be able to download a map to their mobile phone. There will also be a website and interactive magazine.

The first saturday of the New Year presented the perfect opportunity for local footballers to burn off the mince pies and beers, as teams from Bar El Fuego and BML Builders went head to head on the hallowed (or was it yellowed?) turf of Nerja Stadium. This 'friendly' fixture started in competitive fashion as the tackles came thick and fast in a congested midfield, giving referee Gary Miles plenty of opportunity to try his new whistle. In the absence of linesman (or helpful, unbiased sideline spectators!) Mr Miles was left to make all the offside decisions largely unassisted, resulting in a few unavoidable errors - all which added to the already charged atmosphere. The deadlock was broken in the 8th minute as Danny Poole pounced on a goalkeeping error to put BML 1-0 in front. Further calamitous 'keeping led to more goals in the 10th and 19th minutes, giving BML a commanding 3-0 half time lead.

El Fuego rallied in the second half, making better use of the wide areas to throw some useful crosses into the box, but a solid BML back four, capped by masterful centre half performances from Stuart Richardson and John Sommer, dealt with everything comfortably. A further two BML goals and a late consolation for El Fuego made for a final score of 5-1; probably not a true reflection on what was, in fact, a much closer game but for a few goalkeeping blunders. El Fuego will be looking for a chance of revenge as the teams plan to meet again for a rematch in March.

Shakespeare wrote his play “Othello” over four hundred years ago, yet the world’s fascination with the character has not diminished. It is a tragedy as relevant today, with it's themes of racism, hatred and betrayal, as it was then. “Othello” continues to be successful as a play (of course), but to date it has also inspired two operas, three ballets and at least twenty-seven films. But who was Othello? What is it about him that fascinates us so much? Is he a murderer - a wife killer - or a victim? What happened to the deep love he felt for Desdemona? Did he actually exist or did Shakespeare simply make him up? If so, why? This lecture will try to make some sense of it all and offers an insight into the world of “Othello”. It contains live readings, video recordings, music and interviews.

New plant-based diet could 'save millions of lives' every year
The 2-minute trick that will take years off your face
It’s the billion dollar question that many of us (sadly) end up spending our hard earned cash on: how can we stop ageing? Short answer – there’s no such thing as eternal youth. However, while the concept of 'getting older' is inevitable, what if we told you the secret to slowing down this ageing process is actually free? It involves no cream, no magic serum, definitely no surgery or needles, and in actual fact, you’ve been carrying it with you your whole entire life. Mukti, the founder of Mukti Organics, reveals the anti-ageing trick is a simple 2-minute facial massage you can do anywhere at any time. “There are points on your face and where there are small indentations,” Mukti explains. “These points can be found at the tip of your eyebrow, there’s another one at the midpoint of your eyebrow, and there’s another one at the sides of your eyebrow... there’s another one directly under the eye point, just slightly, about 2cm down.” Mukti advises to massage each point in “small circular motions”, which will “help alleviate any stress on the face”. A new diet that has been developed by scientists promises to save millions of lives each year and "transform" the planet's future by fighting against climate change. Don't wear make up to the gym Now, a dermatologist has revealed exactly what happens when we sweat through foundation - and it's not great. Speaking to Elle UK, Dr. Anjali Mahto, Consultant Dermatologist and British Skin Foundation spokesperson explained exercising in make-up can lead to acne and uneven skin texture. "Sweat and increased temperature brought on by exercise can lead to open pores which can become blocked by particles of make-up," she explained. "This can easily lead to breakouts and, in turn, uneven skin texture." It's not just sweat that can cause a
problem, either. Constantly touching equipment, gripping machines and handles and even being in constant contact with the floor (or a yoga mat) can also be an issue. Especially when it's followed by touching our faces - which let's face it, we often do when covered in sweat. Foundation and concealer can give the bacteria something to cling to, reports Elle, which can then lead to breakouts and acne.

"The Fury of Colour" by Francisco Iturrino - until the 3rd March 2019.
From 28th February to 3rd March Go and celebrate with the NerjeĂąo's before lent and get into the party spirit!
With this exhibition the Museo Carmen Thyssen Malaga wishes to pay tribute to Francisco Iturrino (Santander, 1864? Cagnes-sur-Mer, 1924), one of the leading artists represented in our permanent collection, and to help settle a historical debt: the unfair silencing of a pioneer in Spanish avant-garde art of the first quarter of the twentieth century.
Each year the momentum and enthusiasm for this event in Nerja grows and the work on the costumes and floats that parade the streets gather even more imagination and spirit. The idea of carnival is to hold a big party before the supposed fasting before Easter. In Nerja a large anchovy is paraded around the streets down to the beach of Calahonda where it is then blown up as part of a fireworks display.
CREATIVA MALAGA
From 15th February to 17th Februay. At the Malaga Trade Fair and Conference Centre. This event is about Craft, Art, Handicrafts and Design. It is a space where you will have experiences linked to art, design and crafts of all kinds. Taurus ( 20 April – 20 May )
You feel drained emotionally, mentally, physically, and spiritually, and you need more time to yourself, away from other people who demand too much from you, but you don’t seem to be able to get away. You’re friendly and sociable, and don’t take much seriously in this period.

Let the mixture stand in the fridge for at least 2 hours. 3) Strain the horchata using a cheesecloth or a napkin and blend it with the dates or your favourite natural sweetener. C.A.S. (Costa Animal Society) RETURN OF THE CATERPILLARS
A pine processionary nest Photo: John Peatey
Dog owners are being given their annual warning about the appearance of caterpillars which can cause serious problems for their pets. The nests of the Pine Processionary moth began appearing, earlier than usual, by the middle of last month, high up in the branches of pine trees. These look like balls of cotton wool or candy floss but each is actually full of up to 200 maturing caterpillars. Soon, the creatures will be ready for the next stage of their development and will fall to the ground where they will begin their annual march into underground burrows. Here they will remain dormant until summer when they emerge as harmless moths. The caterpillars get their name because they undertake this march in single file lines and follow one another, much like a religious procession. The danger for pets, as well as humans, is because, at this stage of their lifecycle, they possess an unusual defence mechanism. Processional Caterpillars are covered in fine white hairs which can cause at least skin irritation and at worst anaphylactic shock. The caterpillars can travel along the ground for long distances so the menace may be apparent far from the nearest pine tree. Unfortunately, the inherently curious nature of dogs and cats may lead them to 48 THE MARKET PLACE
investigate these unusual creatures. If a pet was to sniff, lick our bite these caterpillars, it would almost certainly suffer a severe allergic reaction which, in the worst scenario, can cause airway closure and death. Other, luckier pets have lost part of their tongues after licking a caterpillar. The symptoms of exposure to caterpillar hair are excessive drooling or frothing at the mouth, difficulty in breathing and/or white spots in the mouth or tongue. If you think your pet is suffering from these symptoms, vets recommend that the animal’s mouth is flushed out with as much water as possible and that the animal is taken immediately for emergency treatment. Avoid contact with the animal’s saliva because the toxin can affect humans as well. The young, the elderly and those who suffer from toxic allergies should be kept well away. To minimise the problem, farmers cut down the nests and then burn them in a metal bucket to prevent as many of the hairs as possible being left to float off in the air. Treading on the caterpillars does not destroy these toxic hairs.
This chart represents one unspayed female, her mate and all of her offspring, producing 2 litters per year, with 2.8 surviving kittens per litter.
By spaying and neutering just one male and one female cat, more than 2,000 unwanted births can be prevented in just four years - and more than 2 million in 8 years! CAN YOU HELP CAS? The Costa Animal Society (CAS) is always in need of more volunteer helpers in a number of areas so if you have spare time to fill, please make contact! In particular, we are currently seeking someone or ones who can help with fundraising and social media promotion. In addition, fosterers are always required to take shortterm care of animals until a permanent home can be found. CAS will provide fosterers with all they need: food, medicine, bedding, leads, etc., as well as advice at any time. Even if you are only here for few months a year, CAS would appreciate your help. For general enquires and a no-obligation chat, contact CAS President Vera Newing on 95 252 9670. Despite the uncertainties of Brexit and the halting economic recovery, money is always needed to cope with the continuous flow of abandoned dogs and cats requiring help from the Costa Animal Society. If you could donate a little to help the animals, CAS would be most grateful.

TAIL TORROX We often talk about our volunteers in our articles or publicity for Tail and in our website but it is sometimes surprising to us that on occasion we meet people who have no idea that we have a need of such help, or have not thought how to go about offering. ail always has opportunities for three types of volunteer help. We are never in a position to offer renumerated work, all our income is spent on the dogs, principally accommodation and feed, vets and overheads. We have two shops selling donated goods which require three people in each six days a week, most helpers do one day a week but of course emergency cover and holidays mean extra numbers are regularly needed. There always seems to be a friendly atmosphere and good camaraderie and maybe just a little competition between the shops. Another area where help is required in numbers is walking the dogs from the Refuge (not far from Lidl on Torrox Costa) and it is more than likely that you have seen groups making

their way down the river walk or the Avenida to the Dog beach on the costa. This can be done in the morning and afternoon. Lastly, the area of activity dare I say that is the most strenuous, but most rewarding, is helping with the daily routine in the Refuge, that is the cleaning out of the kennels and putting down fresh bedding. When we have numbers of visiting volunteers there is little problem but sometimes it falls to just one or two residential helpers who are able to get up early and get everything shipshape so that the walkers can arrive and do their bit. If you would like to help in the shops please telephone Jean on 629 469 445 and for walking or the refuge telephone Kayleigh on 622 139 623. To crib a famous poster – TAIL NEEDS YOU.

was once a sleepy fishing village but now the town has a population of over 21,000. The Balcón de Europa is a magnificent promenade that was made famous by King Alfonso XII , who’s statue now takes pride of place at the far end. Close by is the 17th century Church of El Salvador, and the beautiful gardens of Capistrano Playa. There are many beaches to be found either side and in front of the town, including Burriana with its numerous cafés and restaurants. Here too, you can take advantage of the water sports on offer, including water skiing, scuba diving and sailing. Just outside Nerja on the coast road towards Maro is a very impressive aquaduct which used to supply the local sugar factory.

is just 30 minutes from Malaga, and is the beach resort of Velez Málaga. Its population of 21,000 grows between June and September to 150,000. The towns attractions have expanded over the last few years to cope with the demand, and now the four kilometres of beach have been enhanced by an impressive promenade, which stretches all the way to Caleta de Vélez, a port providing over 200 berths and offering sailing and water sports. Throughout the summer, there are many Chiringuitos on the beach, serving fresh barbequed fish and ice cold beers. In 2002, Paseo de Larios was pedestrianized, and is now a tranquil promenade, with plenty of pavement cafés and restaurants. At the seafront end of Larios is a line of bars and discos which continue throughout the night on Fridays and Saturdays. The history of Torre is uncertain, but it is thought that it might have been part of an ancient Greek settlement, known as Mainake, which was destroyed by the Carthaginians. Tombs of the Carthaginians were found at the mouth of the river Velez. More recently, it was a small fishing village until major development began in the 1970’s.

Lake Viñuela
is a 15 minute drive from the N340 Autovia, leaving at the junction for Velez Malaga. Head inland along the A356; this direction also leads to numerous inland white villages. The first turning on our map is to Benamocarra, which is sign posted to the right after the last roundabout into Velez Malaga. This road will take you back over the main road and then also on to Iznate, and divides to take you to Almachar, El Borge and Cutar. The second turning off the A356 is on the right (after the Repsol garage) to Trapiche. Continue on the A356, and immediately you will see another junction on the left, sign posted to Benamargosa, Triana, Comares and Cutar. This road will also take you as far as Rio Gordo (for a scenic drive). There is a popular Spanish bar on the corner of this junction called El Cruz. Back on the A356, continue on and you will pass another junction on the right, to Canillas de Aceituno, and finally you will see Lake Vinuela in front of you. Turn right before the lake for Puente de Don Manuel, Alcaucin, Viñuela and Periana; carry straight on for Los Romanes, Rio Gordo and Colmenar.

Frigiliana
encompass 39.74 sq km within which live just over 3,000 people year round. Frigiliana is a popular tourist destination, and because there are many holiday homes here, the population triples during the summer months. The history of Frigiliana dates from prehistoric times. The village has been inhabited by numerous civilisations from the Phoenicians and Romans to the Arabs, who had the greatest impact on the town’s development. During the Christian reconquest, Frigiliana was the site of numerous battles culminating in the famous battle of the Rock of Frigiliana in 1569 which ended in the complete expulsion of the Moorish people. One can learn the history of this struggle by walking through the streets of the historic section where there are a series of twelve ceramic plaques posted about which explain the entire story.
